- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Houston Astros for a preseason exhibition game on April 9, 1965.
- 0:14This was the first ever game played in what was formerly called the Harris County Dome Stadium,
- 0:19the eighth wonder of the world, also known as the Astrodome.
- 0:23This preseason game was sold out, including the attendance of President Lyndon Johnson and the First Lady.
- 0:29Houston was managed by Lum Harris, who took over for Harry Kraft near the end of the 1964 season
- 0:35when the team was known as the Colt 45s.
- 0:38Harris was looking to turn around the club that had lost 96 games in each of its first three seasons.
- 0:43The Yankees had a new manager, Johnny Keene, who would replace Yogi Berra after New York lost their second consecutive World Series in 1964.
- 0:51The Yankees had appeared in 14 of the previous 16 World Series, but that run was over.
- 0:56They didn't return back to the fall classic for another 12 years.
- 1:00This audio recording is from the Houston Radio broadcast featuring announcers Gene Elston, Harry Callis, and Lowell Passa.
- 1:07We've had a change in the starting lineup from what we originally received, but here's the starting lineup now for the New York Yankees.
- 1:14Leading off and flying left field is Mickey Mantle. Mantle in left field. Bobby Richardson at second base. Richardson at second.
- 1:22Roger Maris in right field. Maris in right. Joe Pepitone at first base. Pepitone at first.
- 1:30Tony Kubek will be at shortstop. Kubek at short. Tom Tresch in center field. Tresch in center.
- 1:39Keith Boyer at third base. Boyer at third. John Blanchard will do the catching. Blanchard the catcher.
- 1:47And Mel Stottlemyre will be out in the mound. Stottlemyre will do the fishing.
- 1:59Now let's take a look at the starting lineup here for Houston. Joe Morgan at second base. Morgan at second.
- 2:05Al Spangler left field. Spangler in left. Rusty Saab in right field. Saab in right.
- 2:11Walt Bond first base. Bond at first. Bob Aspermonte will be at third base. Aspermonte at third. Jim Winn in center field. Winn in center.
- 2:20Bob Lillis at shortstop. Lillis at short. Ron Brand the catcher. Brand catching. And Terx Farrell the right hander will be on the mound.
- 2:28Farrell a right hander. So the Yankee lineup again. Mantle in left. Richardson at second base. Maris in right.
- 2:35Kepitone on first. Kubek at short. Thresh in center field. Boyer at third. Blanchard catching. And Stottlemyre the pitcher.
- 2:44And for Houston, Morgan at second. Fanger left. Saab right field. Bond first base. Aspermonte third. Winn center field.
- 2:52Lillis at short. Brand the catcher. And Farrell the pitcher.
- 3:00Governor John Connolly of Texas now is all set to fire out the first baseball on the first base side.
- 3:06And he throws it to catcher Ron Brand. And Ron now is bringing it back up to the box seats and handling it to the governor.
- 3:13And Warren Giles of the National League is also down there. So John Connolly has thrown out the first ball here.
- 3:19Governor Connolly now has given the ball to Warren Giles and he evidently asked him to autograph it and said,
- 3:25Warren, my name's already on there. So we're just about all set to play ball now.
- 3:30Astros are taking their warm-up throws down the right side. And the two managers are getting together in home plate.
- 3:38You know, this is a homecoming for number 21 down there, Johnny Keene.
- 3:43And he is going over the ground rules now with a skipper of the Houston Astros, Blumenhead.
- 3:49This evening's broadcast is authorized by the Houston Astros Baseball Club to be used only for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 3:56Any other use of the descriptions and accounts of this play-by-play broadcast without written permission of the Houston National League Baseball Club is prohibited.
- 4:03And there go the Astros out on the field.
- 4:07Bangler to left, Lind to center, Stobb to right. Espramati to third, Lilas to short, Morgan to second base, Bond to first, and Brand to catcher.
- 4:26Stoggaper's getting a few shots of the umpires and the manager's down his home plate.
- 4:32Mel Steiner of the National League will be umpiring at the plate.
- 4:37Larry Knapp of the American League at first.
- 4:41Dan Landis of the National League at second.
- 4:45And Al Salerno of the American League will be at third.
- 4:51Temperature 72 degrees, wind is calm, sky is clear.
- 4:56And Turk Farrell takes his warm-up throws with catcher Ron Brand.
- 5:00We were a little bit early getting on tonight to cover the pregame ceremonies here.
- 5:05And I neglected to mention it, but we do have our usual crew here tonight.
- 5:09Lowpass, Harry Callis, our producer Bob Boyd, and engineer Bob Green.
- 5:14I want to send out a few extra thanks to Mr. Bob Green, who has been practically living here for the past two days after we got back into Florida to get our set-up all ready to go for the 1965 season.
- 5:25And I know that you can tell already that he has done his usual magnificent job.
- 5:31The lead batter for the New York Yankees is going to be Mickey Mantle.
- 5:34Now, I might say that Mantle is being bothered by that hamstring muscle in his right leg again.
- 5:39And I don't think that we'll see too much of Mickey tonight, but he will make what I believe will be a token appearance,
- 5:44and I assume that's the reason that Johnny Keene has moved him to the leadoff spot so that he can get a bat in the first inning.
- 5:49I'm just strictly speculating now.
- 5:51But I doubt that Mantle will play too much tonight.
- 5:53He was not originally in the lineup, but Johnny Keene shifted his lineup around and has moved Mantle to the leadoff spot,
- 6:00a spot, of course, that he normally will not occupy during the season.
- 6:03But Mickey will get his swings here to get the ballgame underway at least, and then he has been bothered by that bad leg, and I assume he'll be taken out.
- 6:11Elston Howard will also miss tonight's game.
- 6:15As I mentioned, Mantle has the hamstring muscle full, and Howard has injured his arm during an exhibition game in Puerto Rico a few days ago.
- 6:24So the catching duties tonight for the Yankees will be handled by John Blanchard.
- 6:29The Astros will come in tonight with a spring exhibition record of 12 wins and 8 defeats, and five more games remain on the schedule.
- 6:37We will give you the play-by-play story of all five, of course, with two tomorrow, the Orioles tomorrow afternoon,
- 6:42and the Yankees tomorrow night.
- 6:45The third makes up for Al Salerno as they broke up the conference of the play, started a cut in front of Farrell's fastball, and he quickly stops, no damage done.
- 6:58Well, we're all set to play ball, and here's Mickey Mantle.
- 7:03Mantle, a switch hitter batting left-handed against Kirk Farrell.
- 7:08Mantle is hitting.324 this spring with two homers and four runs batted in. He has one double.
- 7:16Elsteiner working the flight. Farrell all set to throw the first pitch.
- 7:20And here's the wind-up in the first pitch of the ball game, and it's a ball lowed outside.
- 7:28And the first ball is being taken to Warren Giles, president of the National League.
- 7:32Elsteiner call time. Ron Brand trotted over to the box seat from the right side to present the National League correctly to ball.
- 7:38So the first one thrown here in actual competition, although an exhibition game, has been given to Warren Giles.
- 7:45One ball and no strikes on Mickey Mantle, and here's the pitch now by Farrell.
- 7:48Ground ball, base hit up the middle. Jimmy Wynn comes in to make the pick-up, and Mantle just does get down to first base.
- 7:55You can see that he has an ailing leg. He trotted down, and there's the first hit of the ball game on the second pitch.
- 8:00So Mantle has singled, and that will bring up the second baseman for New York, Bobby Richardson.
- 8:06Richardson, the right-handed batter, hitting 229. He has five runs batted in and four doubles.
- 8:11Al Spangler in left. Jim Wynn in center. Rusty Staub in right. Bob Espermonte at third. Bob Lillis at short.
- 8:18Joe Morgan second base. Walton at first. Ron Brand the catcher. Farrell Ruddy now watches Mantle on first base.
- 8:24Here's the pitch on the way, and it's a low ball. One ball and no strikes.
- 8:27Mantle on with a base hit. Frankie Crocetti coaching down on third for the Bombers.
- 8:34Byrne Benson coaching over on first for New York. No score. We've just got it.
- 8:39Mantle on with a base hit. One ball, no strikes. Start of a goal by Richardson. Held it in there for a strike, and it's one ball and one strike.
- 8:46Roger Maris has moved to the on-deck circle off the left side. The Yankees occupying the third base dugout here at the Astrodome.
- 8:54Kurt Ruddy again now. Not too big a lead by Mantle on first base. The pitch to Richardson.
- 8:58Ground ball to the shortstop. Lillis goes to second. Out there. Throw to first. No, another play.
- 9:04Ball was just not hit hard enough for the double play. Lillis fielded it just off the infield grass.
- 9:09Went to Joe Morgan for the force on Mantle, and the relay to first base to Wolfond was not in time, and Richardson safe over there.
- 9:16Here now is Roger Maris, the New York right fielder.
- 9:23Down the foul line here at the Astrodome. It's 340 feet. 340 to right, 340 to left, 406 feet to center field, and 390 to right center and left center field.
- 9:36Richardson takes his lead, and Maris takes a high outside fastball in this ball one.
- 9:42Turk has not had a good spring. He worked 13 innings up to this point and has allowed 19 hits.
- 9:49And the turn run average is 5.54. Turk has struck out only one batter this spring and has given up two bases on ball.
- 9:56Pitch on the way to Maris. Big swing and a miss. And it's one ball, one strike.
- 10:02Just a magnificent sight here tonight.
- 10:07We may have close to 50,000 people here tonight. I see an awfully lot of standing room occupied in center field.
- 10:16That's again by Farrell now. Richardson takes the big lead, and Maris checks her swing just in time.
- 10:20A high inside fastball. He started to go, but held up on it. And it's two balls and one strike. Two runs down.
- 10:28Maris is hitting 243 this spring. He has hit two homers and seven and eight runs. He has come up with three doubles.
- 10:35Richardson edges away from Wolfond. Here's the pitch in to Maris, and it's a little bit low on outside.
- 10:40So the count goes to three balls and one strike. A lead single by Mickey Mantle.
- 10:47And Mantle was erased on a ground ball to short to Lilas as Richardson hit in the fourth play at second base.
- 10:53One out. And Joe Pepitone will be up next. Top half of the first inning. Here's the three-and-one pitch to Maris.
- 11:00He walks in outside ball four. Throw the Yankees and puts two on. Richardson moves up to second.
- 11:06Roger Maris takes over first. And now the colorful first baseman for the Yankees, Joe Pepitone, steps in.
- 11:14Pepitone is hitting 209. Two homers and 13 runs down at end.
- 11:21Take a comparison of the first baseman. You talked about Curate with no shrinking violence.
- 11:26This fellow, very similar to him. Very similar to all. He plays a better first base, though.
- 11:31Oh! Pepitone, a real good ball player, and will be for some time to come for the Yankees.
- 11:38Runners on first and second base. Richardson on second. Maris on first.
- 11:45Outfield is playing Pepitone pretty well straight away. Arms down by Farrell now.
- 11:49Here's the pitch on the way. And a fly ball left field. Al Stangler coming on for this one now.
- 11:54He's there, and he has got it. And there she goes.
- 11:59So that's a down on the first pitch. Looks high-flying, and that's two deep left fielders.
- 12:04Richardson moves back to second. Maris back to first. And that will bring up Tony Kubek.
- 12:10Kubek is hitting 283.
- 12:17That's added batter. Two on, two out. Top of the first inning.
- 12:21Farrell against Al Stundlmayer. Will be working for the New York Yankees tonight.
- 12:27Kubek takes his time now up on the rubber. Tex Richardson on second base.
- 12:30And the first pitch in is a strike up around the letter. Strike one.
- 12:37You know, I think, Lowell, one of the interesting, look at all the players down at the dugout up on the rim taking this side in here tonight.
- 12:44They're not even back in the dugout bench. They want to get as close as possible.
- 12:47Here's the pitch on the way now. Fly ball left center field. Jimmy Warren Stangler there.
- 12:52Win makes us all. Got it. 2000 yards. Kubek flying to left center for the win.
- 12:58Top of the first inning. No runs, one hit. No air. Kubek will up strong right.
- 13:02Top of the first. The Yankees nothing. And the Houston Astros are coming to bat.
- 13:10Right-hander Mel Stoudelmeyer taking his loosening up throws out of the mound as we swing him to the bottom half of the first inning.
- 13:15No score. Johnny Blanchard shoots it down to the second baseman Bobby Richardson.
- 13:19And the lead batter for the Astros is the second baseman Joel Morgan.
- 13:22He'll be followed by Al Stangler and Lusky Stobb.
- 13:26Here's Little Joe. He's batting 163 this spring. One run battered and one double.
- 13:33Joe has played a tremendous defense of second base and has not been hitting the ball as badly as his average indicates.
- 13:43Stoudelmeyer takes his time now and checks his defense.
- 13:46Third baseman Cleet Boyer in on the grass. And here's the windup in the first pitch by Stoudelmeyer.
- 13:51Ground ball right side. Bobby Richardson there for it. On over to Pepitone. One down.
- 13:54So Morgan hits the first 12th and bounces out second to first. That will bring up Al Stangler.
- 14:00Stoudelmeyer has pitched 32 innings for the Yankees this spring and has given up 29 hits.
- 14:05And he evidently is picking up here this spring where he left off last year at the World Series.
- 14:11Here's ERA 1.97 Stoudelmeyer. Here's Al. He's hitting 304.
- 14:16Stangler left hand is battered. One run battered in the spring. Four doubles.
- 14:20Al has had a real good spring. Stoudelmeyer's first pitch will go outside. Gets away from Blanchard ball on.
- 14:25Jimmy Adair coaching it first. Those of you fans who will be watching our ball club in action in person this year,
- 14:32Jimmy Adair is wearing number three this year. Jimmy changes his number every season.
- 14:37And Jim Busby on third. Ball is low.
- 14:43Ball two. No strikes on Stangler. One out. Nobody on base. Bottom of the first.
- 14:48Stoudelmeyer in 32 innings this spring has struck out 21. So he has that pitch going for him.
- 14:53He's given up only six bases on ball. Down base hit. I believe. No, no, no. Tom places back. He got it.
- 14:59Good. But carried right into Trish's hands and left center field. Two out now. That'll bring up Busby's stop.
- 15:07Busby has after a very bad start this spring.
- 15:14Last couple of weeks has been looking real fine. Busby's got this timing back.
- 15:20And just about everything he has been hitting the past couple of weeks has been on the line.
- 15:25He's got a pretty batting average. First pitch low ball one. Busby has hit two homers, eight RBIs, and has two doubles.
- 15:33Two out. Nobody on base. Bottom of the first. No score. Morgan has bounced out. Stangler's lined to Trish in center field.
- 15:39Ball a little bit outside of the knees. Ball two. No strikes.
- 15:44Nicky Mantle left field. Tom Trish center. Roger Maris in right field.
- 15:51Fleet Boyer on third. Tony Kubek is short. Bobby Richardson second base. Joe Pepitone on first.
- 15:56Donald Myer rocks back now. Here's the pitch on the way to Rusty. Swing and a miss. He took a dandy cut on that one.
- 16:02Two balls, one strike.
- 16:05President Johnson has just arrived in President Jed Hoffmein's box. High over the stands in right center field.
- 16:14President Johnson has just arrived and he is in the box up there now.
- 16:18Two outs. Nobody on. Here's the windup in the pitch to stop. Rusty hits one high. He's in the right center field.
- 16:24It'll be caught. Trish is over. And the right fielder, Roger Maris, steps in front of him to make the catch on the edge of the warning track to refire the side.
- 16:32Three up and three down. No runs. No hits. No errors. And nobody left on base.
- 16:37At the end of the first inning of play, New York...
- 16:40...the great, fast, in-box, and just in line of the scoreboard, where President Richard B. Johnson is now watching the game.
- 16:48Just announcing on the CA that the President has arrived. Here's the stadium tonight.
- 16:55Center fielder Tom Thresh will lead off from New York now as we move into the top half of the second inning.
- 17:01And they have just flashed a picture of the President on the screen in center field and up on the nudge board now.
- 17:06Welcome, Mr. President.
- 17:15Thresh will be followed by Boyer and Blanchard. The ballgame has been held up now.
- 17:19And almost all the fans here, I would say all of them looking in the direction of the President, in the box, high over the right center field stand and giving him an ovation.
- 17:32Also the fans here giving him a standing ovation.
- 17:36Here's Tom Thresh now, center fielder, left-handed batter for New York.
- 17:41I feel pretty well straight away. Here's the windup by Farrell and the pitch.
- 17:44Thresh was going to bunt that ball and he took it low and outside ball one, one and nothing.
- 17:48Kirk, 30-year-old right-hander, stands 6-4, weighs 220 pounds.
- 17:53Kirk trying to get back in the groove after a rough spring.
- 17:57And it's all set again now. Here's the pitch on the way to Thresh. Swing and a fastball up around the letters and he misses.
- 18:02And it's one ball, one strike.
- 18:05We'll have some scores for it a little bit later on. There's a night game going on tonight, exhibition game, and there's some afternoon finals which we'll see.
- 18:13There's a change of the slip pitch. Farrell gave him too high to Thresh.
- 18:18And the comp moves on to two balls, one strike.
- 18:21First of the second inning, no score. Yankees in the Astros, Farrell against Stoudelmeyer.
- 18:26Fleet Boyer in the on-deck circle off the left side. The pitch to Thresh, line drive left field.
- 18:30Spangler over for this one now. Alan Maroney's got it and he's won that one.
- 18:34Thresh is right in the left field. That'll bring up Fleet Boyer.
- 18:37All of us here in the broadcasting booth tonight would like to send out a special hello to King Cole who is an uncle of Betty Robinson who is the wife of Betty Robinson, our farm director for the Astros.
- 18:49King is in Herman Hospital now. He's a real good Astros baseball fan and is making plans to get out to see the opener but couldn't make it tonight and is looking forward to getting out real soon.
- 18:59So a special hello to King Cole from all of us here in our broadcast booth tonight. Ball in the slow.
- 19:06Boyer the batter, one out and John Blanchard the catcher will be up next.
- 19:09Ground ball right by Farrell and in the center field for a base hit.
- 19:12Almost over, couldn't get it and a big turn on first by Boyer and Winslow goes back in a little Joe Morgan out by second base.
- 19:19Boyer has bounced the second hit of the ball game, a hopper through the box. It's bounced right by Farrell's pitching hand in the center field.
- 19:26Maddell opened the ball game with a base hit and now Boyer's single. One out, Boyer on first. Here's the catcher John Blanchard hitting 189.
- 19:34One homer and four RBIs. He has one double.
- 19:38John Blanchard, utility man deluxe for the Yankees, just working the plate tonight.
- 19:43Boyer takes a very short lead on first base. Farrell's pitch, fly ball, center field.
- 19:47Jimmy Winn coming on fast for this one now, slows up and makes the play on that one and they're two down.
- 19:52Blanchard lost a lazy fly ball to center field as Jimmy Winn and that will bring up the pitcher Mel Stubblemeyer.
- 19:58No score, top of the second. Two out now with Boyer on first base.
- 20:03Now, those of you who are not too familiar with the Dome Stadium here, it's 208 feet from second base to the top of the dome.
- 20:15208 feet there. Here's the stretch down the pitch on the way.
- 20:18Foul, that's up in the deep. There's the first souvenir for somebody.
- 20:22The first souvenir that has been hit into the stands.
- 20:28And it's one strike on Stubblemeyer. Boyer hanging close to Bond on first base, waiting for Farrell to get set.
- 20:35Arms down again by Kirk. Here's the pitch now. There's a fly ball, shallow center field.
- 20:39Lillip's going out, Morgan going out. Winn makes the call. Jim's there. Jim's got it.
- 20:43Three-five to start. No runs and one hit, no errors.
- 20:48One man left on base. We go to the bottom half of the second inning here at the Astrodome.
- 20:52There's no score. New York nothing and Houston nothing.
- 20:59Bottom half of the second inning and Walt Bond will lead off.
- 21:02He'll be followed by Bob Aspermati and Jim Winn.
- 21:07Now the Astrodome has quite a few distinctive features, of course.
- 21:12One of them is the pretty close to the tallest foul poles in the business anyway.
- 21:19They go way up in the air above the ninth level.
- 21:23KRLT, AM and FM, Dallas.
- 21:26Guys and one double. Walt off to a close start this spring. Stubblemeyer's pitch.
- 21:30Major tap off the right side. Capitone feels and touches the bag just in front of Bond.
- 21:36Stubblemeyer was over to cover, but Capitone saying that he had no chance to hand the ball to Stubblemeyer, made the play himself.
- 21:43Bond popped that ball, a roller toward first base, and was out unassisted by the first baseman, Joe Capitone.
- 21:48Here's Astro. Aspermati hitting 277.
- 21:54Two hummers and 13 runs batted in. Astro has hit four doubles.
- 21:57No score. Bottom of inning number two.
- 22:01Outfield deepens up and swings around the left side.
- 22:05I know all the fans are anxious to see someone hit a home run here tonight so they can see that scoreboard go off.
- 22:09There's a ball going outside. Ball one.
- 22:13One out. Bond has rolled to first.
- 22:16Stubblemeyer's still a youngster. He's only 23 years old, and as most of you fans know, was a great age to be Yankees to tail end last year.
- 22:24Very high fly ball. That's way up in the air. Left center field. Tom Tresch making the call on it, coming in from center field.
- 22:30Astro Mali has been retired. Two down.
- 22:32Here's Jimmy Wynn.
- 22:37Wynn has had an exciting spring.
- 22:44Has done a tremendous job defensively for Houston.
- 22:48And the batting side comes in here tonight with a 250 average.
- 22:52Jimmy's hit two hummers. He had four runs batted in, four doubles and two doubles.
- 22:56And Stubblemeyer's first pitch. Strike. He stuck that bat up, pulled it back, but evidently Mel Steiner, the play-down buyer, said it was in there anyway. Strike one.
- 23:04Stubblemeyer stands 6-2 and weighs 175 pounds. He's a native of Hazelton, Missouri, but he makes his home now in Madison, Washington.
- 23:13He's been in the major leagues less than a year.
- 23:15Jim Files won. That is headed just under the first level, or the second-peating level of the mezzanine season.
- 23:21And another souvenir hit the afterdome tonight.
- 23:25Two strikes on Jimmy Wynn. Two outs, nobody on base.
- 23:28Stubblemeyer started the season with Richmond in the International League last year where he won 13 games and lost three.
- 23:34And after being called up by New York, helped them to win the American League Senate by winning nine games while losing only three.
- 23:40Pitch to win. That's a little bit low outside.
- 23:44And it's one ball, two strikes.
- 23:46Two outs. Bond is rolled out and Astromati is flying to center.
- 23:51No score. Yankee's nothing, Astro's nothing. Bond on half for the second and he wimps, swings, and he misses and he's stuck him out.
- 23:57So the first strikeout. Wynn goes down swinging. Stubblemeyer's retired the first six men to face him tonight.
- 24:02No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left on base.
- 24:05The end of two innings of play. Yankee's nothing, Astro's nothing.
- 24:14Well, we're moving on to the first half of the third inning here at the afterdome now.
- 24:18Yankee's nothing, Astro's nothing. And now let's hear from Mary Kelley.
- 24:23Thank you, Dean. Mickey Mantle, the leadoff for the New York Yankees.
- 24:26He'll be followed by Bobby Richardson and Roger Maris.
- 24:29Mantle has one of the two hits off Kirk Stirling's fangle, the leadoff to the ballgame.
- 24:34And the first hit in an official game here at the afterdome.
- 24:39Ferrell winds a pitch to Mantle as high inside ball one.
- 24:42One ball and no strikes to Mickey Mantle who is at 454 career home runs more than any other active player.
- 24:49Willie Mays is only one to hide and Mays is at 453.
- 24:54First bell looked in at Ron Brand.
- 24:56Here's the one-oh pitch and that's high with a foul.
- 24:58Ball, ball, two. Two and 0 to Mantle.
- 25:01Mantle the switch hitter batting left against the right-hander Ferrell.
- 25:06Mickey's batting average is higher right-handed, but his home run frequency is higher left-handed.
- 25:14Mantle also leads all active players in career runs that again.
- 25:17A high foul up on the left-hand side. That ball is on a play and a souvenir for fans.
- 25:24Great grab up the ball, apparently, as the fans down below look up and send out a round of applause
- 25:30for some fan who apparently made a nice play of the ball.
- 25:33Two balls and one strike to Mickey Mantle.
- 25:35Bobby Richardson on that. No score. We're in the top of the third.
- 25:41Now on that fifth wing, a bounding ball to second base.
- 25:44Joe Morton's scoop.
- 25:45Foul goes to cover.
- 25:46It throws the first. It's in by a half a step.
- 25:49Mantle is out by a half a step.
- 25:52As he mentioned earlier, Mantle is still bothered by a full hamstring.
- 25:56If he had not done that, he would have beat it out.
- 26:00Joe Morton recovered inside.
- 26:02And Mickey is on it. That will bring up Bobby.
- 26:06Bobby's rounded into a field of his choice his last time up.
- 26:09Hitting 229 this spring. The right-hander.
- 26:12Here's the picture.
- 26:13He takes the fast ball inside. He has the back away. Ball one.
- 26:16One ball and no strikes to Bobby Richardson.
- 26:20Richardson last year for the Yankees at 267.
- 26:25He's got a World Series record for most hip-flap view at 13.
- 26:28He grounds one to second. Morton's scoop to cleanly.
- 26:30It throws the first.
- 26:31And Richardson is out for our number six.
- 26:34So there are two down on the top of the third.
- 26:36That will bring up Roger Merritt, the right-hander.
- 26:38Merritt's watch his last time up.
- 26:44Here's Merritt who of course did 61 all-march, 1951.
- 26:50He came to the Yankees from Kansas City in December of 59
- 26:54and traded with the Yankees also at game to Camp Hadley and Joe Demetri.
- 26:59The Yankees gave Kansas City Don Larson.
- 27:02Here's a picture.
- 27:03Mighty swing and a miss like one on the fast ball.
- 27:06Kansas City in that trade.
- 27:08Got Don Larson who of course is now a member of the Astros
- 27:11along with Miles Thromberry, Hank Fowler, and Norm Sievern.
- 27:15Here's an extra-slip picture.
- 27:16Low for a ball and a Sievern of one-on-one.
- 27:19Two out of nobody on the top half of the third and there's no score.
- 27:25A backhouse at the beautiful all-new afterdome.
- 27:30Now Bale's one-on-tench, a high fly ball in the center field fairly deep.
- 27:34A dim wind is back.
- 27:35Pounds the glove, comes in a couple of steps to make the catch for a guy at the top.
- 27:39No Yankees down and order in the third.
- 27:41No runs, no hits.
- 27:42There were no after-avers and none were done.
- 27:45And after two and a half innings of play, it remains a solid shot.
- 27:51Moving into the bottom half of the third inning, Bob Lilis leads off for the Astros.
- 27:55He'll be followed by Ron Bram and then a picture of Kurt Thurl who plays Mel Babelmeier.
- 28:00Babelmeier, 23-year-old right-hander who was the International League Player of the Year last year,
- 28:07joined the Yankees in August and won nine games for the Yanks.
- 28:10Lilis was in there with a fastball called strike one, 0-1 to Bob Lilis.
- 28:18No score in the bottom of the third.
- 28:20Mel Babelmeier looks in to catch it, John Blanton.
- 28:25And that fifth year, a grounded foul down the first-base side, off the screen,
- 28:29and finally the Astros dug out and bounced into right field where it stayed down by the Bat Boy and the Count.
- 28:34It was 0-2, Babelmeier ahead of the hitter, Bob Lilis.
- 28:38Babelmeier last year hurled a 7-0 two-hit shutout at Washington on September 26th,
- 28:43and he'll long remember that game because he went 5-for-5 at the plate.
- 28:47There's a high ground ball to third.
- 28:49Queensborough has it behind third, goes across to Diamond, and Lilis is on it there for round number one.
- 28:58That'll bring up Ron Bram, Astros catch him.
- 29:02Bram, the spring, hitting two 50-unit position games with three home runs,
- 29:09with one home run rather, three doubles and one triple.
- 29:13Ron a right-hand batter with one out and nobody on.
- 29:17Babelmeier winds, a pitch to him is a little bit low with a slider, ball one.
- 29:21One ball and no strikes to Ron Bram.
- 29:26No score in the bottom of third.
- 29:28The first official game to be played here at the Astrodome,
- 29:32afternoon game tomorrow against the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees again tomorrow night,
- 29:36Sunday afternoon against the Yankees, Sunday night against Baltimore.
- 29:40Line drive into right center field, fire back goes right to Maripita,
- 29:44and it's going all the way to fifth.
- 29:46Ron Bram is second, he tries to third, it goes down to third,
- 29:50it's in his ground third and now holds up a third with his hands off the ground.
- 30:02The person of that crowd is Ron Bram, triples to right center field,
- 30:07all the way past Maripita, rounded off the fast at about the 400-foot mark.
- 30:14Bram is on a third base with the first Astro hit in the afternoon.
- 30:19That brings up Kirk Farrell, the pitcher will decant away his scores.
- 30:23Ron Bram a third base and one man down.
- 30:27Bram for the sweeping turn at third base when Maripita missed the cutoff man,
- 30:32second base from Bobby Richardson.
- 30:34The Tony Kuback was there behind Richardson to make the relay throw,
- 30:39and Bram immediately hunkered back to third.
- 30:41He's on a third base with his band up dribble.
- 30:44No score in the bottom of third.
- 30:46The Astros with a runner at third and one out.
- 30:48Here's a pitch to Farrell.
- 30:49A ground ball to second base.
- 30:51Richardson holds the runner at third, throws the first,
- 30:53and Farrell is out of there for our number two.
- 30:57So we'll take a base in now that brings up Joe Morgan, the leadoff man,
- 31:00who's rounded out second to first his last time up.
- 31:05Little Joe is at 153 in spring training games.
- 31:08The bat is not indicative of the way he has took the ball.
- 31:10He's hit the ball very, very well.
- 31:17Joe Morgan, the left-hand batter, Ron Bram to third base,
- 31:20two men out in the bottom of the third.
- 31:24Al Saddlemire, the right-hander, looks in at John Blanton this time.
- 31:28And the pitch to Morgan is swinging him in, strikes one on the fast ball.
- 31:31Go and one to Joe Morgan.
- 31:41Morgan, a fast man, was the most valuable player in the Texas League.
- 31:45Here he is, 323 for San Antonio.
- 31:48Here's an at-hip to him.
- 31:49It's inside the long hill.
- 31:50He's got away from captured John Blanton.
- 31:52The count is even at one and one.
- 31:56Ron Bram to third base with a triple as his second triple this spring.
- 32:03Two men down in the bottom of the third.
- 32:06And there's no score.
- 32:08The Astros with one hit and the Yankees with two.
- 32:13Now the one-one offering, playing a ground ball in the first base.
- 32:17Pappatone has it, waves off Saddlemire, makes the unassisted put out of every tire he's got.
- 32:23Before the Astros, no runs on one hit.
- 32:25There were no Yankees.
- 32:26There's one runner left on.
- 32:28Out of the other three full innings to play, the Astros nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 32:35I don't own all the coffee in the world,
- 32:37but I'm certainly going to enjoy a cup of Maryland club right now.
- 32:40And that's my cue to turn the microphone over to Lowell Badlow.
- 32:44All right, thank you, Harry.
- 32:45And hello, everybody.
- 32:47What a thrill it is.
- 32:48And the fed goes down to second.
- 32:50Joe Pappatone, the leadoff batter for the Yankees.
- 32:52Then Tony Kubek follows the contract.
- 32:54There's no score in this ballgame.
- 32:56Two hits for the Yankees, one hit for the Astros.
- 32:59This is the top half of the fourth inning.
- 33:01Left-hand hitter, Joe Pappatone, up there.
- 33:04He flies to left field.
- 33:05It's finally his first time.
- 33:07He calls time and wants the rosin.
- 33:10And now the fine guard toss.
- 33:12Yet those Yankees used the rosin bag and the fine guard toss also there.
- 33:16Dean, did you know that?
- 33:18No score in the ballgame.
- 33:20And certainly so delighted to be numbered among the most here on broadcasting baseball from the fabulous Amsterdam.
- 33:26A strike tall as well.
- 33:28Brings on the first pitch.
- 33:29That looks like just medium speed stuff.
- 33:32And Pappatone taking all the way through.
- 33:34And Joe batting at 2-0-7.
- 33:38Here's the pitch.
- 33:39Swung on in a high-top foul.
- 33:40It would be out of play.
- 33:41Souvenir to the lucky fans here in Houston's fabulous Amsterdam.
- 33:49That makes, let's say, three of them, doesn't it?
- 33:52Oh, that's quite a treasure.
- 33:53That's a trophy.
- 33:54Take home a baseball from here.
- 33:57And that goes for not only tonight, but for any game that any of you attend.
- 34:02So, end of the windup, the rock back to pitch.
- 34:04Swung on, hit into right center field.
- 34:06Deep.
- 34:07And it's not too deep, though.
- 34:08About near the very edge of the warning.
- 34:09Back to Jimmy Wann.
- 34:10He's back there.
- 34:11And he's loved it.
- 34:12It's run away.
- 34:15Well, as we have said all spring and for the rest of the night long, Jimmy Wann has shown us some of the best improvement of not only players listed on our roster, but any major league roster.
- 34:28Jimmy Wann in center field.
- 34:30All the fans who are here tonight, just ask them about it.
- 34:33It's important to be a next door neighbor to viewers, to relatives.
- 34:35Remember the foul is just the hottest Jimmy Wann look in center field.
- 34:38Tell me Kuback about it.
- 34:39Strike tall of beauty right down the middle.
- 34:42Kuback arrived to center field his first time, hitting at 279.
- 34:46This took a round.
- 34:47He was 283 at the start of the ball game.
- 34:50Pitch is just a shade off the mark.
- 34:53A little bit outside.
- 34:55And he counters one ball and one strike.
- 34:57One out, no baserunners.
- 34:58New York Yankees at bat here at the top of the fourth inning.
- 35:01Schoolless ball game.
- 35:02Tom Thrift waiting to come up next.
- 35:04Foul pitch.
- 35:05Fungo hit out into left field high down near the line.
- 35:07Spangler coming over fast.
- 35:08Can he get it?
- 35:09He's there.
- 35:10He's got it.
- 35:11Within about a couple of yards of the left field line, Spangler didn't have too much trouble.
- 35:16It was a long run, but plenty of height on that clock.
- 35:20Oh boy.
- 35:21Fellas, you've heard this on television, but this is the first time you've ever heard it on radio.
- 35:26This game is coming to you in living color.
- 35:29You just have to be here to see it and believe it.
- 35:33What a beautiful and giant scoreboard up there.
- 35:35I wonder who's going to activate that spectacular.
- 35:37Here's a high pop by Thrift off the block side of the short.
- 35:40Here's the play.
- 35:41Lillis out there waiting on that green carpet.
- 35:43He's got it.
- 35:44And it was the Yankees in order.
- 35:47No runs, no hits, no unlocks, and there were no errors.
- 35:51Those of you who happened to be tuned in with those San Victor radios down there,
- 35:54you didn't. Again, Iranians.
- 35:56All sort of saluted there with an L and block.
- 36:02Now Spangler leads off, followed by Rusty Stobb and then Walter Bond.
- 36:06No score.
- 36:07Let's see if we can get something going.
- 36:08What do you say?
- 36:09Well, we're up against the defending champs of the American League.
- 36:12It's annual champs almost, you can say.
- 36:16Spangler, sitting at 298 over the course of the exhibition season.
- 36:23He's got five more games to go for the regular season.
- 36:25Spangler hit one to the right side, two there, base hit.
- 36:28So the tournament ballplayer drives one through the hole between second baseman Lickerton
- 36:33and first baseman Pepper Tom.
- 36:35Base hit to the right side.
- 36:37And that amounts to the second hit that we have picked up off.
- 36:40Now Stobb and I are at a nice hand as Rusty Stobb is announced.
- 36:45Rusty's slide out to the right field, his first set.
- 36:48Well, of course, double play depth in field, skated off to the right side of there.
- 36:53And some of my pitches down lefty swing, drive down to the second baseman.
- 36:57And Lickerton goes down to short, back to first, and it's a double play.
- 37:01Shots down to the covering, and on the throwback to first and 20th time for the double play.
- 37:07Lickerton, two back to Pepper Tom, 4-6-3 of course.
- 37:10And with two down in a hurry, that brings on Walter Bond.
- 37:14No score in the ballgame and it's moving rapidly along.
- 37:18Well, a lot of people have asked the question,
- 37:20what sort of a baseball game can you expect to see here?
- 37:23Outgoing game? No scoring game? No scoring game.
- 37:26Every time out there's less than a field.
- 37:28Well, it's in there for a big hit.
- 37:29Mike Lickerton goes for three.
- 37:31The big boundary is hitting the second, and he'll be content with a double.
- 37:34Wait a minute, he's right behind the ball, just like the video, man.
- 37:37Go down to third.
- 37:39So Walter Bond, he's brought up to a stop just as he rounded second, then accelerated and turned on to third.
- 37:46As the ball went back to put off there, a double and an error.
- 37:51Error, two back. So E-6 if you score with it.
- 37:55And there is the first error of the ballgame.
- 37:59No score, and with two down, Bob Astromani is the batter.
- 38:03And Bob Astromani has five to center field, and he's on the appearance.
- 38:10And Jim Buckley coaches up that third, having Bond fail off a couple of big sides and a half or so.
- 38:18And he widens it as the set is made, and the pick's blown away.
- 38:21Tucked out by Bondage off the right two-top almost.
- 38:25Jimmy Wynn standing by at the on-deck circle, which is an emblem of our Astrodome.
- 38:32And the ball's at center, of course, orbiting.
- 38:37Ready, down to my sixth.
- 38:39Come on in there for an air with six, we can start.
- 38:44Duke Carmel, an outfielder, and Bob Schmidt, one of the captains, doing a little, uh, loosening up down along the left line.
- 38:52Duke Carmel and Bob Schmidt for the Yankees.
- 38:57No score, Astromani waiting to pick. Come on in, the softball hit down left side to George Starr.
- 39:02He got up with it over the first two times, and that was a nice, good start.
- 39:06Well, almost, but not quite.
- 39:08And for the Astros, no runs with one hit, one left.
- 39:11There was one error.
- 39:13And so at the end of four innings of play, the Astros nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 39:19Well, here again at the Astrodome, it's time to batter up.
- 39:23And the leadoff man will be Quake Boyer.
- 39:25For the Yankees, he'll be followed by Johnny Blunted.
- 39:28And then we'll see, as there is no warm-up activity on the sidelines, Mel Stoudemire, perhaps,
- 39:33will have a chance for our station identification coming up after this batter.
- 39:36All right, here's the pick now to Boyer.
- 39:38Stakes it way up high, ball one.
- 39:40Quake came through with a base hit single in the second inning.
- 39:43Boyer batting 286 to start the game, and that roll is, uh, the average up to 295.
- 39:51The pick, low and inside, a ball.
- 39:55Now ready, the big right hander, Fairlock's back,
- 40:06keeps coming on it down past third base foul, just down a couple of three feet or so.
- 40:11And third base come for Al Salerno, putting on a little spectacular,
- 40:14letting everybody know that was foul.
- 40:16And I guess the players appreciate that sort of thing.
- 40:18He stays a couple of three or four running steps down the line.
- 40:23And all the way around.
- 40:24No score in the ball game here at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas.
- 40:27And I know that many of you who did not get to make it out here tonight will be here tomorrow,
- 40:31or sometime during the season.
- 40:32Foul up and back, that'll go into the big crowd.
- 40:35Well, let's see what color that went into there, boys.
- 40:38That's the coral red, isn't it?
- 40:40Right. That is in the mezzanine.
- 40:43We are on the club level.
- 40:45This is the first feeding level, one, two, three.
- 40:49Let me count them.
- 40:50We've got six feeding levels, nine, two is the level.
- 40:53Here's the test in there for a strike and got him.
- 40:57So strike three to retire, three down, four down.
- 41:00While we wait now for blanchard, let's go for station identification.
- 41:03This is the Astros, baseball network.
- 41:06You're where the action is on KRLV, a monofilm dollar.
- 41:10The time is 8.31.
- 41:12And our first pitch, the blanchard, it's popped up back on the plate,
- 41:19off of the mat, the plan failing out under,
- 41:21and a little long take just off to the right of the plate.
- 41:23Team Mary, let's get an estimate on the distance from the plate back to the screen.
- 41:27The back stop, let's see, our count is 10, 20, 30, about 35 feet or so, I would say.
- 41:34And likewise off to the right side, a little more than that,
- 41:39to the very leading edge of our dugout.
- 41:41Houston occupied the first base dugout.
- 41:44A lot of people like to be behind the dugout.
- 41:46Well, okay, they are down there, the longest dugout in all the world.
- 41:51Two down, and here's Stoudelmeyer taking the first pitch for the ball, a little high and away.
- 41:57Nothing and nothing on the scoreboard.
- 41:59Stoudelmeyer has been up now to second to the plate,
- 42:02he flied to center the first time, swings and hit one down the right field line,
- 42:05left his shot coming, and it goes over Deccan Foul territory.
- 42:09He's got it in the back of the foot, a high one, lock it down the right field line,
- 42:13giving roughly 20 times, and so for the Yankees here in the fifth inning, down and ordered.
- 42:17No runs, no hits, no inlets, and there were no errors.
- 42:20Well, the game goes now to the last day of the fifth inning.
- 42:23The Houston Astros, nothing, and the New York Yankees, nothing.
- 42:30Halligene and Jimmy Wen lead the off for the Astros, as Mel Stoudelmeyer goes back to the mound.
- 42:36More action up there, no score in this ball game.
- 42:39The only meeting between these two ball clubs this year, the Astros,
- 42:43Ed, Don, and the Yankees, as you most know, I'm sure,
- 42:47those of you who follow regularly on our broadcast,
- 42:50want to say thanks for the nice comments, letters, and cards, and so on.
- 42:53We appreciate them and we haven't forgotten them.
- 42:55Wen checked the swing and fouled it off.
- 42:57Jimmy had a notion to give it a good cut that time, checked the swing and strike one.
- 43:03Wen stuck out his first time at bat.
- 43:06Stoudelmeyer has allowed only two hits, a triple by Ronnie Brand, a single by Fenger.
- 43:13Now is the low-bone right-hander, locked back down ready to fix, turning away from it.
- 43:18Ah, Ed, the shoulder, Wen has the count of ball one and strike one.
- 43:22I would say between 45,000 and 50,000 spectators here tonight.
- 43:28And we've got double header tomorrow and double header on Sunday,
- 43:32opening game against the fellas Monday.
- 43:34Wen takes breaking stuff low and inside.
- 43:36Many times, of course, we try to tell exactly what kind of breaking stuff,
- 43:41so just as long as we keep it just about in the area, I know that you're happy.
- 43:46And so sometimes, though, that it might be a school ball, it could be a sphincter.
- 43:50The pitch hung on him, and he had him fishing around out there, tolling around.
- 43:54He was submitted already and went on through,
- 43:57and Jimmy gets a little confirmation there from umpire and catcher.
- 44:00I was really fooled on that, wasn't I? Yep.
- 44:02Yes, you were. The count is both two and second two. No score.
- 44:08We're the last guys with a fifth inning.
- 44:11Now working.
- 44:12Wen playing, hits it down on the left side.
- 44:14Boy, he lets it go down to shortstop two back over to first base ten-five.
- 44:18Boy, it's just off of the bench down there.
- 44:21The Astros think that Wen might have been safe on that,
- 44:24but the first base umpire, Larry, not tears out of there, and it's gone away.
- 44:29Well, he's getting a little bit of needling off of the bench off to the right side.
- 44:33Here now is Bob Lillett.
- 44:35On air, bounded by three.
- 44:37Thirty-first in the third inning.
- 44:41Lillett, three-eighteen average.
- 44:45Bout to hit down a shortstop, two back coming in, and Bob is momentarily in front in time.
- 44:51Oh boy, that pepper-ton is a perfect first baseman, isn't it?
- 44:54Nifty around the base over there.
- 44:57And it looks like there's nothing to it.
- 44:59Got two in a row.
- 45:00I bounded off short to first.
- 45:02And here is Walter Barnes.
- 45:03I love it.
- 45:04Barnes, I should say.
- 45:05Barnes gets a nice hand because they recall his demonstration of speed being a catcher.
- 45:11He is three to foot, and he powered one up the alley in right center.
- 45:15Just about 400 feet away for a triple.
- 45:17He's first on his back.
- 45:18Six to strike.
- 45:19In and over.
- 45:21Ronnie Barnes, of course, has done an outstanding job getting a chance to be regular
- 45:26with our Astros over from the Pittsburgh organization.
- 45:30All right, here's the pitch.
- 45:31Come on.
- 45:32Up into medium deep center field.
- 45:35Tommy Craig just sliding in on Ricky there and has it for the put-up.
- 45:39Well up and down and over for the Astros here in the fifth inning.
- 45:42No runs, no hits, none left on.
- 45:43There were no errors.
- 45:44And so the team changed sides.
- 45:46The Yankees will give it a try at the plate.
- 45:49And the score is Astros nothing and New York nothing.
- 45:54All right, Gene, thank you.
- 45:55Well, the Earthmen down there taking care of the scores.
- 45:59Kind of manicuring the dirt portion of the infield.
- 46:02Nifty jars.
- 46:03That was their first try.
- 46:05And let's get a round of applause from a lot of the people here.
- 46:08Listen to that.
- 46:09We're, of course, honored to have the President of the United States,
- 46:12President Lyndon Johnson, visiting here tonight to see the first game ever
- 46:18in the world's first air-conditioned dome-covered stadium.
- 46:22And our governor, Governor John Connelly, and many other dignitaries,
- 46:26city and county officials.
- 46:27All right, here's the leadoff batter now.
- 46:29Mickey Mantle, I mean, Queens and Mississus strike one.
- 46:32The mighty Mickey Mantle, I recall in 1951,
- 46:35he was coming along from way, way, way down in the lower minor leagues.
- 46:40And they said two days before the season started,
- 46:42he hit home runs all over the place and he couldn't make the team.
- 46:45God wanted to do a win back up.
- 46:47He's on the warning sign.
- 46:48Here the wall is up.
- 46:50The team just made it.
- 46:52It's a home run.
- 46:55Let's see what they have.
- 46:56The umpire's given the table for home runs.
- 46:58Mantle hit it.
- 46:59Four hundred and six feet to home plate.
- 47:01And the lower of the crowd, here it is.
- 47:07And on the deck, Green and Binnifield,
- 47:11as that umpire said when the umpire's been hit the home run,
- 47:15it says, fifth up there.
- 47:17So the Yankees lead it, one to nothing.
- 47:22But he killed his boards on that one.
- 47:25The Yankees lead it, Mickey Mantle.
- 47:28And the first game competition here at the Amsterdam gets the first home run,
- 47:33and that's quite fitting, isn't it?
- 47:37We have got this program to bring you a special weather bulletin
- 47:40from the KRLB Newsroom, John Brooks reporting.
- 47:43The U.S. Weather Bureau has issued this severe thunderstorm forecast
- 47:47for portions of central and south central Oklahoma,
- 47:49portions of north central Texas,
- 47:51and that area in Texas does include the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
- 47:55A few severe thunderstorms with large hail and locally damaging windstorms
- 47:59are expected this evening from 9 o'clock until 3 o'clock tomorrow morning
- 48:03in the approximate area along and 60 miles either side of the line
- 48:07from 30 miles southeast of Mineral Wells
- 48:10to 70 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
- 48:14The north-central Texas portion of the area is bounded by Wichita Falls,
- 48:18Breckenridge, Granbury, Italy, Farmsville, and Bonham.
- 48:23And again, the Dallas-Fort Worth area is included from 9 o'clock
- 48:26until 3 o'clock tomorrow morning.
- 48:28A few severe thunderstorms with large hail and locally damaging windstorms
- 48:32are expected.
- 48:34This is Weather Bureau bulletin from the KRLB Newsroom.
- 48:37Roger Maris takes it like once.
- 48:41Maris is looking for his first hit.
- 48:43He's walked and fly at the center, and Roger's getting it to 40.
- 48:46Picks one round and a hard pop, very shallow into the field.
- 48:49Clay goes out from short, and he's in front of Spangler and has it fully out.
- 48:53Lilith goes way on out there and makes a nice run back to haul that one down,
- 48:58looking up over the shoulder.
- 48:59That brings on Joe Pepperton, the real stepper this Pepperton.
- 49:03Mano has Harbert, hitting one just over the barrier into the center field seat
- 49:07to the right of the runway.
- 49:09The first run of the ballgame, the first home run ever in two-team competition here,
- 49:15the opposing team competition, but it's that way.
- 49:17There's a drop going way back up into the mezzanine-shaped foul.
- 49:22And it's a foul strike for Pepperton.
- 49:28Two down, no base runners.
- 49:30Mano is soaking left-handed against right-hand picking.
- 49:33Most of you know that.
- 49:35He's got his hammer.
- 49:36Top ball, a five.
- 49:38A ball and a strike to count for Pepperton.
- 49:41And Tony Kubek waiting around, one to nothing, Yankee.
- 49:44Picks Sonny, and Ferrell raising it way up high from the left shoulder.
- 49:49Here's the pit.
- 49:50Come on.
- 49:51Over for Cleaveshead.
- 49:52Mark of the left is second base, going into a base hit.
- 49:54And Pepperton turns and holds on as Wynn makes that throw right back in on top of the bag to Joe Morgan.
- 49:59And that was the reaction you heard from the crowd, that throw from Wynn to Morgan.
- 50:06Base hit, Pepperton driving one out there, and the center fielder, the left, is fed away.
- 50:13Bringing to the plate, Tony Kubek batting left-handed.
- 50:17And he's flat out both times, the center and the left, the first to set.
- 50:22All right, two down, one run across, the man at first.
- 50:24The pitch is high, and Brand turning around, daring the runner, Pepperton, down at first base.
- 50:31Kubek has played in 19 games prior to this evening, and has been up 62 times so far this spring.
- 50:40All right, here's Pick Ferrell, a tackle to the field of the pitch.
- 50:43Swung on him this time.
- 50:44He really breathed fast him on that one.
- 50:47Right away to Firenature.
- 50:48Ball on and strike one with two down.
- 50:50A one-to-nothing ball game for those of you just dialing the 10.
- 50:55You have to sit there for minutes and minutes, passing five, 10-minute marks without getting your score.
- 51:03Ferrell setting his time, he's ready.
- 51:05The leadoff at first, Bond holding up against the runner to pitch.
- 51:08Swung on, hit out to right center, Wynn going over, and let's see going back, let's see Wynn, he's got it.
- 51:13He's got it over the shoulder on the warning card.
- 51:15Yeah, Mike, let me catch up here.
- 51:18All right, the little other crowd, let you know about it.
- 51:21The Yankees get one run.
- 51:22They came up with two hits and had one left on and there were no errors.
- 51:26We go now to the last half of the sixth inning.
- 51:28The score is the Yankees one and the X goes nothing.
- 51:32Well, let's get down to business now.
- 51:34Pick Ferrell will come out and take his turn to the plate as we go for the last half of the sixth inning.
- 51:40Ferrell has set up one and hit a smash in the thrown-out second to first round ball.
- 51:45Well, I love scoring a fair for those of you just cutting in on your radio sets right now.
- 51:49Here we are with the last of the sixth inning and if Yankees one and the X goes nothing
- 51:55and Mickey Manilow smacks one straight away in the center field for a home run.
- 51:59Ferrell swings and smashes foul.
- 52:02He was trying to try to ball him up.
- 52:05Well, when you first come out here, you know, I don't know, people standing around, will it fill up?
- 52:11Oh, yes, just about 10, 12 minutes before the game got underway, you could see that practically every
- 52:16seed was taken and they sold standing room only space.
- 52:20There's a slider outside.
- 52:22Ball on a strike one.
- 52:24And between 45,000 and 50,000 people are here and I tell you they've enjoyed every minute,
- 52:29every tip so far without a doubt.
- 52:31But there's so many things to see and it's truly overwhelming to try to just take it over
- 52:37and describe this one low and outside.
- 52:40And of course, our business at hand is to describe this ballgame first and foremost.
- 52:45And after it, the sips were a little colored around the edges, right?
- 52:49Good.
- 52:50Ball didn't strike one.
- 52:52Ferrell, his leadoff man, Morgan and Spangler will follow up the pitch and he takes it in,
- 52:56starts up, out of the header, and it's three balls in one strike.
- 52:59Hey, what have we got, stepping up on the front burner here now, huh?
- 53:03Oh, so many things have been said about this after the home.
- 53:08And that is just the beginning.
- 53:11To say that it is utterly spectacular is saying nothing, really.
- 53:15Oh, he's got a strike on the inside edge and Ferrell had the back like spit up in the air almost there.
- 53:20Saying, come on and throw it.
- 53:21I don't believe he can get it across, but he did.
- 53:25One to nothing Yankees and Saddam had with a playoff.
- 53:28It is.
- 53:29And it's both four.
- 53:30He's on.
- 53:31We get what represents the time on its first play.
- 53:34And Ferrell removes the helmet and let's see what goes as he talks a bit over the right.
- 53:38They're going to keep him in the ball game as soon as he'll be put on the windbreak.
- 53:42Oh, I think it's in Serbia that we might mention it right here.
- 53:45It's a Johnny C. the New York Yankees and Mickey Mantle for his staying in the ball game
- 53:50as long as he has tonight even though he is suffering from a very bad right leg.
- 53:54Indeed so, Gene.
- 53:56Well, I don't know, this is an inspiring sort of a thing here.
- 54:01I don't know, this might make anybody get well in a hurry just to come out here.
- 54:05But as you say, certainly 100% true that we've got to say hats off to Mickey Mantle, Johnny Keene,
- 54:13and all the teammates of Mickey Mantle and those Yankees down there too.
- 54:16All right, in field up a little bit now for double play ball.
- 54:19Joe Morgan hits it down to the first base with two there.
- 54:21He can't handle it.
- 54:22And of course, under right tail.
- 54:23Perfect.
- 54:24John had his glove down and the ball bounced over.
- 54:26They might score him an error on that one, Gene.
- 54:28Let's see.
- 54:29It is E3.
- 54:31Error.
- 54:32Tucked, called up at second base.
- 54:34So Morgan got one too.
- 54:36It seemed to bounce just over the glove of Puppet John.
- 54:39He was trying to sort of scoop with his glove off to his right.
- 54:43He didn't get over in front of the ball and it was not a smash either.
- 54:47All right, Al Spangler.
- 54:49And he can just almost look for the sacrifice front.
- 54:52But whether he'll get it or not, well, we don't know for sure.
- 54:56And that's another thing, of course, that makes baseball such a great sport, isn't it, huh?
- 55:00We don't know what to expect.
- 55:04Many times, the unexpected occurs.
- 55:06Boyer is creeping down from third base.
- 55:08The pick just hung on.
- 55:09He was swinging straight away and fouled it off at strike one.
- 55:13What about the down end spring training?
- 55:15The first baseman was creeping in left of bag, you know, in a bunch situation.
- 55:19And the big, strong, muscular football type left hand batter took a mighty home run cut
- 55:25and hit a line drive right past his ear.
- 55:28Boyer with a run on five, a bunch situation.
- 55:32But now let's see.
- 55:33As Bugsley has come up and yelled something down to Spangler
- 55:36off that coaching side at third base off of the line.
- 55:39And Boyer's lead is backed off to the very edge of the end field.
- 55:42That now comes in.
- 55:44A couple of sides.
- 55:46Showed him how working the pick.
- 55:48And he bumped off down third base.
- 55:49And what you can see there is that out of it all, and you see on the line, the base hit right there, yeah.
- 55:55All hands are safe.
- 55:57It's no joke how much off line Jeff was down.
- 56:00The base hit that base hit right on there.
- 56:05I don't know what he's doing there.
- 56:07That's great.
- 56:11Boyer that was good and it put it in there wasn't it, Gene?
- 56:15That's great, that put that eight ball in a hole of three.
- 56:19Now this guy's got that one short ball in.
- 56:26Well the catch to Johnny Brankett has gone after the mound.
- 56:28It's off to no solid line.
- 56:30And let's see it stop.
- 56:31It's up there with three men on.
- 56:33It's up there with first and third.
- 56:35Joe Morgan at second.
- 56:36And Spangler getting his second base hit of the evening.
- 56:39This time running one perfectly.
- 56:41Down third allowed the roll.
- 56:43And it died in third to it.
- 56:46About four feet from the bag of third base.
- 56:49How do you like those apples?
- 56:50All right here's Trowelmeyer, the rock back to the dip.
- 56:52Low and up top, the ball under red.
- 56:55So the Red Heads from New Orleans is up there.
- 56:57Pete Mickelson is in the full time working now for the Yankees at right hander.
- 57:01Mickelson a one-day up in ball game.
- 57:05Yankees leading.
- 57:06Base is loaded for the up-throw.
- 57:11And President Johnson up there on his face.
- 57:13Let's see.
- 57:14As he swings and fouls off the left side.
- 57:17The Pinton Mocks.
- 57:18Oh you get it with a nap here.
- 57:20The Astros up against the mighty New York Yankees.
- 57:23The Emmet has been created as a great Yankee baseball team down through the years.
- 57:27And it lives here.
- 57:28And all of its splendor I guess you can say.
- 57:31Honestly say it that way.
- 57:33And the colorful Amsterdam.
- 57:35Even the Yankees are all just by this side.
- 57:37But right now we've got a hot game going.
- 57:39Let's see Pete Mickelson away that broke off from the left hander.
- 57:43And it could be a little bit of a turning the ball slightly.
- 57:46It's sort of a screwball delivery.
- 57:48I notice Paul Richards is up there in the box to greet our President.
- 57:52And to pass along perhaps answers to questions that could be put in his direction.
- 57:58And if anybody can answer him he can of course.
- 58:01Here's the pitch.
- 58:02Let's see if the Queens can hit it down through the right side.
- 58:04And the hot down to second ball.
- 58:05The throw to second for high ball game first score.
- 58:09The throw to second.
- 58:10Sports is finally there.
- 58:12And two runners are saved.
- 58:13It's a 1-1 tie.
- 58:14Houston and the New York Yankees.
- 58:18So Rusty is saved on the field as a score.
- 58:20RBI for Rusty.
- 58:22And Walter Bond.
- 58:24The Bomber is stepped up.
- 58:28Well we could go on and on about great things that have been said about our stadium here.
- 58:34And you'll hear some 50,000 people telling you about it tomorrow.
- 58:39Ladies and gentlemen and boys and girls everywhere.
- 58:42Why don't you come out and see a game here?
- 58:46All right the outfield set up deep in field.
- 58:48They're wanting a down ball for a double play.
- 58:50Let's see what they get.
- 58:51So the first diving back in.
- 58:52Rusty is saved.
- 58:53First play there.
- 58:55Boy that Joe Pepperton.
- 58:56He's a fancy damn with that glove at first base fellas.
- 59:00Just like there's nothing to it playing that bag over there.
- 59:03All right here's the hit down.
- 59:05The third one hit down.
- 59:06The left side double play ball.
- 59:07Two back steps on second.
- 59:09Dose the first.
- 59:10Got him.
- 59:11So Bond hits into a double play that went sick.
- 59:13Stepping on the bag.
- 59:14Throwing down to Pepperton.
- 59:15Two back to Pepperton.
- 59:17And throw a line under that one will ya.
- 59:19And for the Astros tying up the ball again.
- 59:21Getting one run.
- 59:22And that one little hit.
- 59:23Bumps and goes.
- 59:24Two men left on it with one error.
- 59:25At the end of sixth inning to play the score.
- 59:28The Yankees won and the Astros won.
- 59:31Well here we are.
- 59:34We've reeled off a 1-1 tie.
- 59:37Ready to go.
- 59:38Gene are you all set to come back?
- 59:39Let's see a tie ball game.
- 59:40Houston won and the Yankees won.
- 59:42All right well thank you and we're all set to move on here to number seven.
- 59:45Tom Price the center fielder for the Yankees.
- 59:47Dating left handed here against Kurt Bell.
- 59:49A familiar figure just joined up in the bullpen down the left of your line.
- 59:53He's running number 31 and old number five for Houston.
- 59:56Todd Neal he's the pitching coach for the Yankees.
- 59:58There's a very high top foul.
- 1:00:01Bell comes back gives up on it goes up into the middle of the net.
- 1:00:04A ball and it's like one.
- 1:00:06By honor Hal Renes is now warming up for New York down the left of your line.
- 1:00:10Pete Nicholson warming up a few moments ago and stopped throwing.
- 1:00:14Price has done it twice.
- 1:00:15Flying to left field.
- 1:00:16Off the shortstop.
- 1:00:17Score tied 1-1 top of the seven.
- 1:00:19Bell goes into his windup and the pitch is that ball the tied outside.
- 1:00:23And it's ball one and it's like one.
- 1:00:26Now that Tuck has got a mighty fine job here tonight.
- 1:00:29He's allowed only four hits and the only run came on Mickey Mantle.
- 1:00:32415 foot home run to center field.
- 1:00:34Here's the pitch now.
- 1:00:36There's the slip pitch and Tuck is trying to swing butt on that one to the right side.
- 1:00:40Reached out and just got a piece of it foul.
- 1:00:42And it's one ball two strikes.
- 1:00:45Pete Boyer will be up next.
- 1:00:47He'll be followed by John Blanchett.
- 1:00:49Tuck has struck out only one batter tonight and has given up one base on balls.
- 1:00:53And at one stage of this game retired 11 batters in a row.
- 1:00:57Tuck ready again now.
- 1:00:58Here's the one and two pitch.
- 1:00:59Swung on, hopped to the right side.
- 1:01:01Little Joe moves over.
- 1:01:02Morgan scoops it up.
- 1:01:03Goes to bond.
- 1:01:04They got him and there's one down.
- 1:01:05Tuck bounces out second to first.
- 1:01:09Mantle called her and broke the string for Tuck.
- 1:01:14Pete Boyer singled in the second inning and then Farrell retired 11 men in a row before
- 1:01:18Mantle hit the two to center field.
- 1:01:22Here's Boyer single in the second, called out on strikes in the fifth.
- 1:01:25Who has been the only Yankee strikeout pitch in the night.
- 1:01:28Score side 1-1.
- 1:01:30Houston, New York top of the seventh inning.
- 1:01:31And Farrell's first pitch on the way to Boyer.
- 1:01:33Line drive, Spangler left field.
- 1:01:35Al back at it.
- 1:01:36And there are two down.
- 1:01:38Line drive to left field.
- 1:01:40Hit right under the nose by Pete Boyer for the second out.
- 1:01:43That will bring up the Yankee catcher John Blanchett.
- 1:01:47Down in the bullpen for Houston out in right field.
- 1:01:49Left hander Hal Woodishick is starting to loosen up.
- 1:01:53And Hal run up in the bullpen for the Yankees off the left side.
- 1:01:58Two outs.
- 1:02:01Yankee scored first in the top of the sixth.
- 1:02:03The Astros came right back to tie it up.
- 1:02:05Big cut by Blanchett and he missed his strike on.
- 1:02:09One strike to count.
- 1:02:14Actually there are six levels in the Astrodome as far as feeding is concerned.
- 1:02:18A total of nine altogether.
- 1:02:22Here's the wind up in the next pitch by Kirk.
- 1:02:24Fastball.
- 1:02:25Blanchett over 30.
- 1:02:26The check in the swing of him there.
- 1:02:27Blanchett bases.
- 1:02:28Blanchett on his way to second.
- 1:02:29Spangler makes the pick up in third territory.
- 1:02:31And Blanchett slows up and pulls in the second base for the stand up double.
- 1:02:35Blanchett was checking his swing on that.
- 1:02:37The ball hit his side and he popped it right back over third.
- 1:02:41That's the fifth pitch of the Yankees tonight.
- 1:02:43Gives Blanchett one for three.
- 1:02:45Wings up the pitcher now to Stoudelmeier.
- 1:02:48Now the Yankees now leading it five to four.
- 1:02:50Score tied one-one.
- 1:02:51Top of the seventh.
- 1:02:52Two out Blanchett on second base.
- 1:02:55Stoudelmeier has flied to study and piled up the star in right field.
- 1:02:59Right handed batter.
- 1:03:00Two outs.
- 1:03:01Blanchett on second base.
- 1:03:03Frankie Corsetti, the third base coach for the Yankees, motions out toward second base
- 1:03:08to give Blanchett the correct out.
- 1:03:14Here's the stretch by Phelps.
- 1:03:15Now not too big a lead by Blanchett on second base.
- 1:03:17And Stoudelmeier took a very late swing and a pitch around the knees of the outside.
- 1:03:21Strike one.
- 1:03:23Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs today, seven to four.
- 1:03:26Another exhibition game.
- 1:03:28Chicago White Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds eight to three.
- 1:03:33Phelps takes the stretch now.
- 1:03:34Fit down the way to Stoudelmeier.
- 1:03:35Very low and outside.
- 1:03:38And it's ball one and strike one.
- 1:03:40One-one count.
- 1:03:41Stoudelmeier batting with Blanchett on second, seventh inning.
- 1:03:45Yankees one after it's one.
- 1:03:47Manil Soma, the run for the Yankees.
- 1:03:50Here's the stretch now.
- 1:03:51Fit down the way to Stoudelmeier.
- 1:03:53Strike on the outside corner to the knees.
- 1:03:57One and two count on the Yankees.
- 1:04:02Search text over the sign again with Ron Brand.
- 1:04:04There have been no lineup changes tonight.
- 1:04:08One and two stretch by Phelps.
- 1:04:10One drive, one hopper shooting into your face.
- 1:04:12Hit hit from Blanchett.
- 1:04:13His win three and a play.
- 1:04:15They're going to get him.
- 1:04:16He's out.
- 1:04:19Beautiful goal by Jimmy Webb.
- 1:04:22Straight out of it.
- 1:04:23Got it.
- 1:04:24Ahead of by Kempi.
- 1:04:26Stoudelmeier singles in the center field.
- 1:04:28Blanchett is cut down.
- 1:04:30Jimmy Webb the run for him.
- 1:04:31The tie is a tie.
- 1:04:33Six hits off field.
- 1:04:34No runs, two hits.
- 1:04:35No heads.
- 1:04:36One left.
- 1:04:37Go to the bottom of the seventh inning now.
- 1:04:39The score, New York 1-1 Houston 1.
- 1:04:42Outside for the seventh inning stretch now as we go into the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:04:47With the score tied 1-1.
- 1:04:49Bob Anthony getting a win and Bob Lilich will be facing Mel Stoudelmeier.
- 1:04:57Cleveland San Francisco ranked out today.
- 1:05:00Another excavation game.
- 1:05:01Minnesota 2 and the left one and Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh 5-4.
- 1:05:10Here's Astrow fly to center bounce to shortstop.
- 1:05:13Right-handed batter outfield deep and around the left side.
- 1:05:17Stoudelmeier 23-0 right-handed throws low ball on.
- 1:05:21Howie Paulette Houston pitching coach is down on the bullpen with how it would have ticked
- 1:05:27as Woody continues to loosen up.
- 1:05:29Both starting pitches are still in, Stoudelmeier and Fells.
- 1:05:33And the start of the seventh inning for Stoudelmeier.
- 1:05:36He's allowed four hits, one run, struck out one and walked one.
- 1:05:39Here's the fifth Astrow trying from the outside corner to the knees.
- 1:05:43And it's one and one.
- 1:05:45Well, tomorrow afternoon we will have the Baltimore Orioles for you here at the
- 1:05:48after-dome.
- 1:05:49A reminder that there are still feats available for tomorrow afternoon's game of the Orioles.
- 1:05:55Game time will be 1-30.
- 1:05:57Here's the fifth now, swing and a miss by Astrow and Stoudelmeier's doing a good pitch
- 1:06:01around the knees.
- 1:06:02And it's one ball through strike.
- 1:06:05Our broadcast time tomorrow, air time will be 1-15, game time 1-30.
- 1:06:10The Astrows and the Orioles.
- 1:06:12And tomorrow night the Yankees again.
- 1:06:14Sunday afternoon it will be New York and Sunday night the Orioles.
- 1:06:18Stoudelmeier ready again, the fifth Astromani.
- 1:06:20Low outside, it's two balls through strike.
- 1:06:23And keep in mind the opening of the National League season on Monday night here at the
- 1:06:27after-dome and the opposition will be the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:06:33Nobody out, nobody on.
- 1:06:34Bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:06:37Yankees and the Astros inside 1-1.
- 1:06:41Here's the next pitch by Stoudelmeier, high pop-up off the left side.
- 1:06:45Sweet boy moving into foul territory now, about 30 feet off 30.
- 1:06:49Got it, there's one down.
- 1:06:50Now before Ginny Winn comes on, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:06:54This is the Astros baseball network.
- 1:06:57And this is the RLD, a yellow-deaf endemic with a baseball action edge.
- 1:07:01It's Leif Asnacht.
- 1:07:07Right-handed batter Ginny Winn steps on here with one out.
- 1:07:10Winn struck out in the second inning and grounded out the shortstop in the fifth on a very close play.
- 1:07:16Stoudelmeier checks the time with John Blanchard.
- 1:07:18Here's the windup in the first pitch to win a right-handed batter.
- 1:07:21Ground ball hits the third.
- 1:07:22Boyer right on the edge of the grass.
- 1:07:23And on over to Puppettell and they're two out.
- 1:07:26Winn at the first ball pitch to high ground ball to third to Boyer.
- 1:07:30Here's the shortstop by Lillis.
- 1:07:32Three has not had a hit in this two times.
- 1:07:34The Asnacht out the third in the shortstop.
- 1:07:38Stoudelmeier retired the first seven men to patient tonight before Ron Brand tripled to the
- 1:07:43seats in right-center field.
- 1:07:48Single by Spangler and a double by Bond in the fourth.
- 1:07:53First pitch on the way to Lillis to ball.
- 1:07:56Astros scored in the sixth on a watch that fell.
- 1:07:59An error on the first baseman Puppetton on Morgan's ground ball.
- 1:08:02A single by Spangler and a field of choice ground ball.
- 1:08:05There's a line drive to second base.
- 1:08:07And a lead lead by Bobby Richardson off the bat of Lillis to retire the drive.
- 1:08:10Three up, three down.
- 1:08:11No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left on base.
- 1:08:14At the end of seven innings of play, the Yankees won and the Astros won.
- 1:08:22Mickey Mantle will lead off for New York as we start the eighth and the Astros now have a new
- 1:08:26pitcher left-hander Hal Woodishick has come on to replace Church Bell.
- 1:08:30Church did a real fine job tonight, his best showing of his strength.
- 1:08:34Going seven innings allowing just a home run by Mantle who gave up six hits, struck out one and
- 1:08:39walked one.
- 1:08:40Mantle now will be coming on as a right-handed batter for the first time tonight against the
- 1:08:44left-hander Hal Woodishick.
- 1:08:45Going all tied up at one-one, eighth innings.
- 1:08:51Left-handed Eve Hamilton is starting to loosen up now and the both-hander on the left of your
- 1:08:55line for the Yankees.
- 1:08:57There's Mantle, two hits and three hits tonight, single in the first, Harvard in the sixth.
- 1:09:03And in between he bounced out to second.
- 1:09:06This is the fourth game in which Woodishick has appeared this playing.
- 1:09:09Woodishick has only four innings under himself, that is an actual spring competition.
- 1:09:13Of course he's seen action in inter-squad games and so forth.
- 1:09:16Mantle takes it low outside ball one.
- 1:09:18Woody has not given up a run in the four innings, he's allowed five hits.
- 1:09:22No head runs rather but he has a lot of pull behind him.
- 1:09:25One walk and one strikeout.
- 1:09:27Left-hander throws and Mantle takes it low.
- 1:09:29Ball two, no strike.
- 1:09:34First half of the eighth inning, door tied, one-one.
- 1:09:38Woody has the sign again now for Brand Brand.
- 1:09:41Here's the pitch in the Mantle.
- 1:09:42Top side is off the Mantle's foot I believe.
- 1:09:44It's just went foul.
- 1:09:45Brand picked it up off the left side of the plate.
- 1:09:48And it's ball two and strike one.
- 1:09:54Brand got the new baseball now from the plate on fire, no signage.
- 1:10:00Bangler left, wind setters, dog right.
- 1:10:03Ask Ramadi Thurgg and Lilla Short, Morgan Secondbase, bond on first and Brand to catch it.
- 1:10:09Ball two, strike one on Mickey Mantle.
- 1:10:11The left-hander throws again and Mantle starts to go.
- 1:10:13Takes the strike from the outside corner to the middle.
- 1:10:16Hell up on it.
- 1:10:19Ball two, strike two.
- 1:10:23Wow, we start blowing for keeps on Monday night when the Phillies will be in here at 7.30.
- 1:10:27Low inside, full count.
- 1:10:30Mickey Mantle three balls, two strikes.
- 1:10:33Woody has the stinker ball set there and that's what has made him so effective as a reliever.
- 1:10:38He keeps the ball low and around the knees and forces the batter to hit it on the ground.
- 1:10:43That foul off the right side.
- 1:10:45That leg certainly is bothering Mantle.
- 1:10:47He doesn't stand him as too well.
- 1:10:49Although I actually, for Mantle, he has a home-hunter single tonight with one bad leg.
- 1:10:55But he certainly is not controlling himself too well at the plate.
- 1:10:58I think it bothers him a little bit more, batting right-handed.
- 1:11:01Here's a wind-up on the pitch now to Mantle.
- 1:11:03Low ball four, he wants.
- 1:11:05So Mantle's not down to first and that's the third time that Mantle has been on in four appearances at the plate.
- 1:11:12Ida Lopez is going to run for it now.
- 1:11:15Ida Lopez running for Mantle at first.
- 1:11:19The winner's pick has lost the first time to face it.
- 1:11:21Mantle gets a nice hand.
- 1:11:23And that's the third time.
- 1:11:33I mentioned when we started our broadcast tonight that it appears that Mantle was making only a token appearance
- 1:11:40because of that hamstring muscle injury, but he had just been taken out here in the eighth inning.
- 1:11:45Here's Bobby Richardson.
- 1:11:47Richardson's running for Mantle on first base and Richardson tried to butt any misses.
- 1:11:53Both Astromani and Bond coming in from third and third.
- 1:11:57Two bases on balls given up by Houston Fitching now.
- 1:12:00Feral allowed one in the seventh inning.
- 1:12:02He worked and Woodishick has just watched Mantle to lead off the eighth.
- 1:12:06Roger Merritt will be up next.
- 1:12:08Watching for the butt again now and Richardson missed again on the butt attempt.
- 1:12:12He split up on the handle of that bat that time and Woodishick throws the fastball right by him.
- 1:12:20Two strikes to count.
- 1:12:24Astromani is backed up a little bit now with a two-strike count on Bobby Richardson.
- 1:12:28Bond is still holding up on first.
- 1:12:30Here's the stretch now by Woodishick and Richardson takes the ball.
- 1:12:33It's low and inside and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:12:36One, two counts.
- 1:12:39It's fairly well straight away here for Richardson.
- 1:12:43Starved by, if anything, he's stated off the opposite side there giving Richardson right center field.
- 1:12:48Now, Terrell Lopez takes his lead away from first base.
- 1:12:51Woodishick throws on the way to Richardson.
- 1:12:53He got him.
- 1:12:54Ball strike three.
- 1:12:56As the sharp third that caught the outside corner for the East, Richardson has been called out on strike.
- 1:13:00He is the second strikeout victim for New York tonight.
- 1:13:03Both were caught looking for it.
- 1:13:05It was struck out by Feral in the fifth.
- 1:13:07Here's Roger Mares.
- 1:13:09One out.
- 1:13:10Are Terrell Lopez running for mantle on first?
- 1:13:13The score is tied 1-1 on top of the eighth.
- 1:13:16Mares is off for two officially tonight.
- 1:13:19Plainson misses the first pitch.
- 1:13:21Second one.
- 1:13:22He walked in the first inning.
- 1:13:24And there's also a fly defender popped out shortstop.
- 1:13:32Runner on first, Lopez.
- 1:13:33Here's the pitch on the way to Mares. It's a little bit too high.
- 1:13:39Hector Lopez loosening up along with Hamilton now on the both end on the left of your line.
- 1:13:44Lopez may go into the outfield.
- 1:13:46He may just keep out Lopez in there.
- 1:13:47Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:13:49There's a line drive right field.
- 1:13:50Starved inside.
- 1:13:51He got it right at the two-drop double-trick right.
- 1:13:55Not inside.
- 1:13:57The ball got away from Bond.
- 1:13:58They had him.
- 1:14:00They're caught by Rushy Starved right off the two-drop.
- 1:14:03They almost doubled Lopez's pace.
- 1:14:06But the ball dribbled out at Bond's mitts.
- 1:14:09Chained in on one-ratt.
- 1:14:11They almost had the twin killing on that one.
- 1:14:14But Terrell Lopez got back in.
- 1:14:16City line drives the right field.
- 1:14:18Handled by Rushy Starved. Two away.
- 1:14:20And now here's the first baseman for New York, Joe Pepitone.
- 1:14:24Seem to have the feeling that I do that these boys have adjusted both teams away from all the spectact.
- 1:14:31They're here playing the top flight of the band of baseball.
- 1:14:34Real nice game to watch.
- 1:14:35Everything is running along smoothly here tonight.
- 1:14:38And I think you get sort of engrossed in the ball game.
- 1:14:41And if it's at all possible, you forget where you are.
- 1:14:43And that's pretty difficult to do here.
- 1:14:45Here's the pitch on the way to Pepitone.
- 1:14:47There's a looper. Same pitch.
- 1:14:48Left center field.
- 1:14:49Lopez on his way to third.
- 1:14:50Picked up by Tim Wim.
- 1:14:52He throws back into second base and Lopez holds up at third.
- 1:14:56Joe Morgan takes the throw back in from Wim.
- 1:14:58Throw a looping signal to the left center field after that of Joe Pepitone.
- 1:15:02His second hit of the night gives him two for four.
- 1:15:05Put Yankee runners on first and third with two men out.
- 1:15:08And the body now is the shortstop Tony Kubek.
- 1:15:11Ron Brand is called time and he's going out to talk to Woodishick.
- 1:15:15Walt Bond over from first base.
- 1:15:17So there's the first hit off Woody.
- 1:15:19And he has coupled that base with a walk.
- 1:15:22So the Yankees are threatening here in the top of the eighth in a 1-1 ball game.
- 1:15:27A throw low pass at third base.
- 1:15:29Joe Pepitone on first.
- 1:15:31And here's Tony Kubek.
- 1:15:32All three times that Kubek has been up tonight, he's flied out.
- 1:15:35Right to center.
- 1:15:36Once to left.
- 1:15:37Long stretch by Woodishick.
- 1:15:38Here's the pitch.
- 1:15:39Butt attempt missed.
- 1:15:40That's the third butt attempt by Yankee in this inning off the pitching of Woodishick.
- 1:15:45And they have missed all three of them.
- 1:15:47Second one.
- 1:15:52Two runs are scored in this ball game.
- 1:15:54Each club came up with a run in the sixth.
- 1:15:57Low pass comes down off third.
- 1:15:59Got two big leads by Pepitone off his left-handed hell Woodishick.
- 1:16:02Here's the pitch to Kubek.
- 1:16:03There goes the runner down.
- 1:16:04Brand takes the throw to second and that all out.
- 1:16:07He takes the throw to second and then he's starting to go to third.
- 1:16:11So Pepitone has moved up on the deal of second base.
- 1:16:15Actually he got about two-thirds of the way down and then stopped.
- 1:16:19But he still did not draw a brand throw.
- 1:16:22So it's a stolen base for Pepitone.
- 1:16:24First base open now.
- 1:16:26Yankee runners on second and third.
- 1:16:27Two outs.
- 1:16:29And the one ball, one strike out on left-handed hitter Tony Kubek.
- 1:16:33Better feel that Tom Stryke will be up next.
- 1:16:36Woodishick takes the full windup now and the pitch is a good strike on the inside corner of the middle.
- 1:16:41Oh, that was a dandy pitch.
- 1:16:43That's the same pitch that he struck Richardson out on I believe.
- 1:16:47Only Kubek has came inside around the knees.
- 1:16:50The left-handed better.
- 1:16:52One ball, two strikes.
- 1:16:54Two outs.
- 1:16:55Pepitone on second.
- 1:16:56Arturo Lopez on third.
- 1:16:57Door five, one, one.
- 1:16:58Pop of the eighth.
- 1:16:59Woodishick throws again now to Kubek.
- 1:17:01Bring it on this and he's stuck.
- 1:17:05Now the side is retired.
- 1:17:06If Kubek goes down 20.
- 1:17:08I don't know whether that was a change-up or not.
- 1:17:11Woodishick fooling around with that after second strikeout.
- 1:17:15Three strikeouts for Houston 50.
- 1:17:17No runs, one hit.
- 1:17:18Now there's two men left on base.
- 1:17:21And we go to the bottom of the eighth inning now with the score New York one, Houston one.
- 1:17:27We've had a defensive change now for New York in left field.
- 1:17:31Hector Lopez has taken over in left field for Mickey Mantle.
- 1:17:35Mantle lifted is Arturo Lopez ran for him and now it's Hector Lopez in left.
- 1:17:40He's fresh in center and has right.
- 1:17:43Here's the catcher Ron Brand now.
- 1:17:45Bottom of the eighth inning, score time one, one.
- 1:17:48Now it's Stapelmeyer filling the mound for the Yankees.
- 1:17:53Brand has a triple tonight and picked that up in the third.
- 1:17:57Wallow has hit about 395 feet back in the right center field.
- 1:18:01Brand the right-handed batter.
- 1:18:02Ground ball to third.
- 1:18:03Boyer backs to the big hop.
- 1:18:04Got it?
- 1:18:05Now it's the first base to pimp the turn and there's one out.
- 1:18:10That'll bring up Hal Woodishick.
- 1:18:12Brand hits the first ball six and bounces out to third.
- 1:18:15Here's Woody now.
- 1:18:21One out, nobody on base.
- 1:18:24Let me check the right-handed batter.
- 1:18:36Here's the pitch on the way now.
- 1:18:38There's a strike around the knee.
- 1:18:41One out, nobody on top of the batting.
- 1:18:43Or there's Joe Morgan will be up next.
- 1:18:48Donald Weill looks over the sign again now from Blanchard.
- 1:18:51Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:18:52One ball, it's in too low.
- 1:18:57Woodishick the batter making his first play to third.
- 1:19:04Papelmeyer comes down off the mound.
- 1:19:05One ball, one strike to count on Woodishick.
- 1:19:10The official paid attendance tonight is 47,876.
- 1:19:16Swing another by Woody and it's one ball, two strikes.
- 1:19:2147,876.
- 1:19:27One ball, two strikes on Woodishick.
- 1:19:29One out, nobody on base.
- 1:19:30Here's the windup and the pitch by Papelmeyer.
- 1:19:32Low and outside and it's two balls, two strikes.
- 1:19:36About 3,000 fans are standing tonight to watch this one.
- 1:19:41The feeding capacity, 45,000.
- 1:19:46Ball, two strikes, two.
- 1:19:48Here's the pitch on the way now.
- 1:19:49And a low pitch, low and inside and it's a cold count of three balls, two strikes.
- 1:19:53This, of course, is the largest crowd ever to see a baseball game in Houston.
- 1:20:00The previous high was 30,000 and 27.
- 1:20:05Watch the doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 10, 1962.
- 1:20:11Ball, four and Woodishick is on.
- 1:20:13Donald Weill lost the pitcher and Woody moves on down to first.
- 1:20:17That's the second base on balls given up by Papelmeyer tonight.
- 1:20:20And in both instances he has lost the pitcher.
- 1:20:23He lost Fairhall in the sixth inning.
- 1:20:31The largest single game crowd to watch a game in Houston was 28,669.
- 1:20:4047,876.
- 1:20:43Hey, tonight.
- 1:20:44Here's little Joe Morgan now.
- 1:20:46He's watching for the bud and Morgan made the offensive, but it's a fast strike.
- 1:20:50On the outside going up around the letter.
- 1:20:52Now Johnny Keene is sending right-hander Hal Renes back into the bullpen out in left field.
- 1:20:56Renes now warming up against the New York.
- 1:21:00Woody takes his lead off first base.
- 1:21:02One out.
- 1:21:04And the score tied one-one last half of the eighth.
- 1:21:06Here's the pitch to Morgan.
- 1:21:07Strike two.
- 1:21:10Boy, you're watching for a bud and Morgan has taken the first two pitches and he gets behind two strikes.
- 1:21:17Al Spangler will be up next.
- 1:21:22Woody hangs close to Joe Papelmeyer on first now, waiting for Papelmeyer to get set.
- 1:21:28New York one, Houston one.
- 1:21:30Iron's down again by Papelmeyer.
- 1:21:32Two strikes on Morgan.
- 1:21:33And the pitch is inside, just above the knees, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:21:38Two counts.
- 1:21:42Haven't done too many threats tonight by either ball club.
- 1:21:46Yankee scored on Mandelkomer in the sixth.
- 1:21:49And the Astros came right back in the bottom half to tie.
- 1:21:52Here's the pitch to Morgan.
- 1:21:53Swinging a ground ball to Joe Pepetone.
- 1:21:55Goes down and threw it away in the left field.
- 1:21:58Woody throwing the third.
- 1:21:59Two back, couldn't get it.
- 1:22:03That'll be an error on Joe Pepetone.
- 1:22:07He not only threw that wildly, he threw it way, way up in the air.
- 1:22:11Two back went way up to try to stop it, but it had to be failed by Hector Lopez in left field.
- 1:22:17So on the air, Morgan holds it first and Woody goes to third.
- 1:22:22Here's Al Spangler.
- 1:22:26That's the third New York area tonight.
- 1:22:28Two of them have been on Pepetone.
- 1:22:35And the other one was on Bobby Richardson.
- 1:22:40Here's Spangler now.
- 1:22:41He has two to three.
- 1:22:42Both of the six singles.
- 1:22:46Down boy here with the left-handed batter up here is flying into the grass.
- 1:22:50He is getting his instructions now from Johnny Keene.
- 1:22:52And after looking in the dugout, he backed up a couple steps.
- 1:22:56And Keene evidently does not believe that Spangler will punt here.
- 1:22:59One out.
- 1:23:01With Woodishek on third.
- 1:23:02They're not watching for the squeeze too closely.
- 1:23:04And here's the third.
- 1:23:05Spangler hits a foul ball.
- 1:23:06That will be up into the field.
- 1:23:07Seals think soft on the left side.
- 1:23:09Oh, that took a big time.
- 1:23:12And it's second one.
- 1:23:16Blanky is evidently figuring here that all order is possible that Spangler might try to punt one here.
- 1:23:24And with Woodishek on third, it may be just a little bit remote.
- 1:23:28But Spangler keeps an eye on Jim Busby and Boyer is still being cautious about where he plays on third base.
- 1:23:38Lead run on third.
- 1:23:39Short side, one, one, eight inning.

- 1:28:40There's a playing and there's two strikes, you know, after Woodersick got his third strikeout.
- 1:28:44He struck out two in the eighth inning.
- 1:28:48That's the third strikeout for Woodersick.
- 1:28:51Perell struck out one.

- 1:30:11Boyer moves to third.
- 1:30:13Linds throws back to Joe Morgan to second base.
- 1:30:15So the Yankees execute the hit and run.
- 1:30:18As Boyer breaks to second base, then Linds sends a pinch single right over second base
- 1:30:22to put Yankees on first and third with only one out.
- 1:30:25And now we're going to have a pinch batter here for the pitcher, Bell-Staddle Mayer.

- 1:31:46Foul ball right off of Brand's hand and it goes back into the base of the screen.
- 1:31:53And Gonzalez gets behind here two strikes.
- 1:31:58Morgan and Lilas at second and shortstop are just a shade in front of double play depth.
- 1:32:03They'll be trying to cut off the run at the plate here if the ball hits it to them.
- 1:32:07And right now Wood-a-shick out in front of Gonzalez who's batting fourth out of two strikes.
- 1:32:11Here's Woodie's pitch now.

- 1:32:42Retires to side.
- 1:32:45Lilas and DeGoto is right in the hole on that one.
- 1:32:48John Lynch coming down on the throw to Morgan.
- 1:32:51And the relay to Walfond completes the double play and retires to side.
- 1:32:55No run.

- 1:33:37And one run will win it for the Astros.
- 1:33:40Here's Walfond.
- 1:33:41Doubled in the left-hander field in the fourth inning.

- 1:35:12Bond makes the turn, picked up by Stray.
- 1:35:16And Bond holds on with the single.
- 1:35:19There's a soft line there to the right of Bobby Richardson.
- 1:35:22And Houston has the lead man on.
- 1:35:24And here's Bob Aspermonte.
- 1:35:26That's the first hit of course off Reniff.
- 1:35:28The fifth hit for Houston tonight.
- 1:35:31Yankees have out-hit Houston tonight 8-5.
- 1:35:36We have Emily Tracy with us tonight, Ms. Astro of 1965, who was elected last year, you may recall.
- 1:35:53Here's the stretch now to look over the first.
- 1:35:55Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:35:56Astro bumps one beautifully off the right side, but it goes foul.
- 1:35:59Started out very good on the grass, but then turned sharply and went foul.
- 1:36:03So Aspermonte's attempt to bump the runner up to foul ball, strike one.
- 1:36:12Not surprised to find Stan Sturitz in command over there.
- 1:36:16Stanley, you're, you have some good duty there.
- 1:36:20Emily Tracy here, as I mentioned, this Astro of 1965.

- 1:36:32Astro back in again now.
- 1:36:33Please, boy, you're in close on the grass to third.
- 1:36:36One-one tie.
- 1:36:37Houston trying to get barred around.
- 1:36:39You're single to open the inning.
- 1:36:41One strike on Aspermonte.

- 1:36:48Play back to Kubek.
- 1:36:49Out of second.
- 1:36:50Throw a double play to Peppacone.
- 1:36:52So they switch the strategy on the first front of that one foul, and then Aspermonte,
- 1:36:57swinging away, is banged into a double play.
- 1:37:00Back to Hal Reniff.
- 1:37:01Hit to the shortstop to first.
- 1:37:03It's getting win now, two outs.
- 1:37:07Well, we've had just about everything in this ball game tonight.
- 1:37:10Some real good defensive plays, a home run.
- 1:37:13And we've had quite a few double plays.
- 1:37:15That's the third double play that the Yankees have pulled off tonight.
- 1:37:18Here's Jim Wynn, right-handed batter, and Reniff's first pitch on the way.
- 1:37:21And Wynn takes a strike on the inside corner to bounce back one.
- 1:37:25Astros have pulled off one double play tonight, so we've had four in the ball game.
- 1:37:30Two out, nobody on.
- 1:37:32Bottom of the ninth inning, the pitch to win.
- 1:37:34Strike two called.
- 1:37:35That was a pretty fair pitch.
- 1:37:39That just cut away from Wynn on the letters on the inside corner.
- 1:37:42And it's two strikes.
- 1:37:47And Wynn, on the other hand, went to first eight for the Yankees.
- 1:37:52Gave up one round, allowed four hits, walked two and struck out one.
- 1:37:55Reniff, two strike pitch to win.
- 1:37:57Low outside of ball.
- 1:37:59One and two.
- 1:38:01Well, it's getting mighty close to that time now.
- 1:38:05When the National League season will be getting underway.
- 1:38:08Houston's fourth year in the National League.
- 1:38:10Monday night here at the Astrodome against the Phillies.

- 1:38:36Lee Boyer, Tony Kubek, Bobby Richardson, Joe Pettitone on the inside.
- 1:38:42Ball two, strike two, wind up by Reniff.
- 1:38:44One on base hit, center field.
- 1:38:47Strike comes to his left and right center to field the ball.
- 1:38:50Wind holds on to first base.
- 1:38:53Not a far, Jimmy.
- 1:38:54Wind had to dive back into first as Bobby Richardson.
- 1:38:58He caught his arm as if he were going to go to first base.
- 1:39:02And Wind, who had made the wide turn,
- 1:39:04drove back in on his stomach.
- 1:39:06But there was no throw.
- 1:39:08Well, that's the second hit on this inning.
- 1:39:10The first hit was a race on the double play ball.
- 1:39:14Also, Don picked up his sixth hit of the ball game, two out, and went to first.
- 1:39:18Here's Bob Lillis.
- 1:39:20Now the play has been up three times without a hit.
- 1:39:22Don is out twice in one down.
- 1:39:27Here's the stretch now.
- 1:39:29Go to first and Wind gets back in.
- 1:39:37Joe Puppetoe holding up against Wind on first base.
- 1:39:40Bob Lillis, there goes Wind.
- 1:39:41Oh, he holds up.
- 1:39:42There's a tap to third.
- 1:39:43Boyer backs up.
- 1:39:44Easy play to second base.
- 1:39:45Wind is out there to the side of the side.
- 1:39:47Wind started to break on Edamond Hill.
- 1:39:50As Willis hits a bouncing ball to Boyer at third base,
- 1:39:54and the play down to Bobby Richardson to fourth win.
- 1:39:57And we go into wet splennings here tonight.
- 1:39:58No runs on two hits, so there is one man left on base.
- 1:40:01So as our ball game moves on to the top half of the tenth,
- 1:40:05the score is still all tied up, New York one and Houston one.
- 1:40:11Here's the top of the batting order for New York,
- 1:40:13top of the tenth inning, Hector Lopez.
- 1:40:16This is Hector Lopez, first time to bat.
- 1:40:21He took over from Mandel in left field.
- 1:40:23All with a check, now starting his third inning.
- 1:40:27Lopez hitting 3-11 this spring.
- 1:40:30One double, no runs batted in.
- 1:40:32Woody's pitch low inside, ball one, one and nothing.
- 1:40:39Now this is our 21st game of the spring and our third Hector inning game.
- 1:40:45Lopez starts to go, holds up on a strike on the inside corner of the letters,
- 1:40:49ball one, strike one.
- 1:40:54Bobby Richardson in the on-deck circle and then Roger Maris.
- 1:40:57Woodichick throws again, now low inside, pitch to Hector Lopez.
- 1:41:01And it's ball two and strike one.
- 1:41:04Score tied 1-1, it's been that way since the sixth when Mandel homers
- 1:41:10and the Astros came right back in the bottom half to tie it up.
- 1:41:14Ball north, all strike up around the letter.
- 1:41:16So Lopez takes the 2-2 count.
- 1:41:21Manager Luman has gone all the way with the regulars except for the pitcher.
- 1:41:29Down ball foul, he gouged that one into the, starts to go in the Yankee dugout
- 1:41:33back of third, run down by the third base on fire, Al Salerno of the American League.
- 1:41:39Ball two, strike two.
- 1:41:45Nobody out, nobody on base, top of the tenth inning.
- 1:41:48Here's the windup by Woodichick and the pitch.
- 1:41:50Now Lopez hits a ball that is just outside of third foul.
- 1:41:53And Ramonty makes the play in foul territory.
- 1:41:59More than 250 news media representatives from throughout the nation are here at the Astrodome tonight.
- 1:42:08Of course, we have pictures and stories going all over the world.
- 1:42:10There's a swing and a miss and he's stuck in there.
- 1:42:13That's a pretty good pitch by Woody, a third ball.
- 1:42:18And Lopez goes down swinging.
- 1:42:22Probably was more of a slider than a curveball because Woodichick claims he does not throw the curve.
- 1:42:29That's the fourth strikeout for Woodichick since he came on to the eighth inning.
- 1:42:32And the first pitch to Bobby Richardson outside ball one.
- 1:42:38Richardson has not had a hit tonight in four times.
- 1:42:42He was called out on strikes his last time up.
- 1:42:45Little right-handed batter.
- 1:42:46There's a hard hit, Ram ball to Lewis on one half.
- 1:42:48The clean goes to first.
- 1:42:50Two-meter-off. Richardson drives out towards the first.
- 1:42:54Lewis to bond two away and that will bring up Roger Madd.
- 1:42:59Yankees have an affordable of eight hits tonight.
- 1:43:02Six of them off Kirkville in the seven-inning teamwork.
- 1:43:05And Woodichick has given up two.

- 1:43:18Left-handed batter looks at the soft strikeup around the letter, strike one.
- 1:43:25One strike on Merritt.
- 1:43:27Yankees and the Astros are tied up one-one here in the tenth inning.
- 1:43:31Merritt starts to go and holds up a curveball that broke low on outside.
- 1:43:35Woody's throwing more soft pitches tonight than it could be that he may be experimenting a little bit with a change-up.
- 1:43:42Outfield is very deep for Merritt.
- 1:43:44Two outs.
- 1:43:46Ball one and strike one.
- 1:43:47The left-hander throws again now.
- 1:43:48There's a high foul.
- 1:43:49This will be up into the seat back over the screen.
- 1:43:54And it's one ball, two strikes.
- 1:44:0147,876 fans watching this one tonight.
- 1:44:08And two games here tomorrow in the afternoon.
- 1:44:10It'll be Baltimore and Houston.
- 1:44:13And the Yankees are back tomorrow night against the Astros.
- 1:44:16Here's Woodishick's pitch on the way.
- 1:44:18Now that hit him.
- 1:44:19Merritt just hit him the right arm.
- 1:44:21I think it got him in the biceps or above the elbow.
- 1:44:24And he doesn't seem to be bothered by it and runs down to first base.
- 1:44:27So Merritt's a hit by a pitch.
- 1:44:33Two outs.
- 1:44:34Runner on first base.
- 1:44:35And here's the first baseman for New York, Joe Pepitone.
- 1:44:42Joe Pepitone has singled his last two times up.
- 1:44:46In the sixth and the eighth innings and prior to that he's flied out twice.
- 1:44:50Bangler and then Jim Lynn.
- 1:44:52Merritt takes his lead away from Bond on first base.
- 1:44:54Pepitone is almost just going to first base and just back in time.
- 1:44:58Merritt just got back in ahead of the throwback for Ann DeBarn.
- 1:45:04Why, Pepitone had to move in a hurry on that one right up underneath the whiskers.
- 1:45:10And Graham took advantage of it as Pepitone was out of the way.
- 1:45:13A right-handed, a left-handed batter, he shot a quick throw down to Bond.
- 1:45:17But Merritt's back in time.
- 1:45:19That's inside again.
- 1:45:20The Woodishick has hit Merritt, the left-handed batter, in the arm.
- 1:45:24And then the next two, or the first two pitches to Pepitone have been inside to a left-handed hitter.
- 1:45:30The Woody now has suddenly got a little bit of a wild high and inside to a left-handed player.
- 1:45:35Graham goes out to talk to him.
- 1:45:37Two outs.
- 1:45:38Lopez is struck out.
- 1:45:39Richardson is bounced out.
- 1:45:41Merritt has been hit by a pitch.
- 1:45:43Score tied 1-1.
- 1:45:44We're in the tenth inning.
- 1:45:46Woody has the sign again now.
- 1:45:47Merritt takes a pretty good lead off this left-hander.
- 1:45:50And Woodishick goes to first.
- 1:45:54But not in time to get Merritt.
- 1:45:57Left-handed batter, Yankee first baseman, Joe Pepitone.
- 1:46:01Here's the next pitch.
- 1:46:02Foul ball.
- 1:46:03I said it's the Ramazanin off the left side or the second feeding level here in the off-the-dow.
- 1:46:11Ball through and strike one.
- 1:46:14Two on count.
- 1:46:18Outfield is deep for Pepitone and they're swung around the right side.
- 1:46:21Merritt again away from first base.
- 1:46:23Here's Woodishick to pitch.
- 1:46:24Ground ball to the third stop.
- 1:46:26Bob Lillis goes to second to Morgan.
- 1:46:28First on Merritt.
- 1:46:29Two inside the side.
- 1:46:31The Yankees are out of the top of the tenth inning.
- 1:46:35No runs and no hits.
- 1:46:37No errors.
- 1:46:38One man was left on base.
- 1:46:39Bottom of the tenth inning coming up now with the score still tied.
- 1:46:42Yankees won.
- 1:46:43Estros won.
- 1:46:45Bottom half of the tenth inning now and Ron Brand will lead off of the Estros.
- 1:46:50And we'll have the pitcher, Hal Woodishick, and the top of the batting order, Joe Morgan.
- 1:46:56Well, Brand has had the longest hit tonight for Houston, a triple back in the third.
- 1:47:01The ball has been around 395 feet or so.
- 1:47:04Walt Bonds hit the left-center field a double and just about a five.
- 1:47:08Last two times, Brand has slid out and bounced out.
- 1:47:10Here's Brennan's wide up in the first pitch and Brand takes the low and outside for ball one, one and nothing.
- 1:47:16One other night game being played in the exhibition circles tonight.
- 1:47:21Detroit in the seventh inning trailing Milwaukee five to three.
- 1:47:25One more ball.
- 1:47:27Right behind the plate up and over the screen.
- 1:47:30One ball and one strike.
- 1:47:33Brand is not a very big fella, but occasionally he will throw some bars.
- 1:47:40And he has pretty fair speed for a catcher.
- 1:47:43One ball, one strike.
- 1:47:44Here's the pitch by Brennan.
- 1:47:46Brand takes a good fast strike on the outside corner of the letter.
- 1:47:50And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:47:52The ball game has been tied since the sixth.
- 1:47:57It's one-one here in the bottom of the tenth inning.
- 1:48:03Brennan ready again now.
- 1:48:04Here's the pitch on the way to Brand.
- 1:48:06There's a ground ball to Keith Church.
- 1:48:07That beautiful stop by Kubek in the throw-in time.
- 1:48:11A little bit unconscious on that one, but he made a great play on it going to his right back and the hole.
- 1:48:18He struck that glove in just the right spot.
- 1:48:21And Brand has been throwing out towards the first.
- 1:48:24Here's how Woodachick.
- 1:48:27What he's got at bat on me once tonight, that was in the eighth when he threw a base on balls.
- 1:48:34Woodachick the right-handed hitter.
- 1:48:37One out, nobody on base.
- 1:48:42Brennan ties the sign now from Bob Schmidt.
- 1:48:45And the first pitch into Woodachick is a low outside pitch for ball one.
- 1:48:49Woodachick steps out to read his third base coach, Jim Bursley now.
- 1:48:54Joe Morgan in the on-deck circle off the right side.
- 1:48:56Brennan throws and Woodachick takes the strike on the inside corner of the belt.
- 1:49:01And it's ball one in strike one.
- 1:49:06Game time tomorrow afternoon, 1.30 against the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:49:09Woodachick hits a foul up into the two-stack off the right side.
- 1:49:13And he gets the line on Reddick, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:49:19Hector Lopez on left, Tom Price in center, Roger Maritz in right field.
- 1:49:25And Reddick's shot again now.
- 1:49:26Here's the one-and-two pitch to Woodachick.
- 1:49:28Game-second time.
- 1:49:30Over the play for low, Woodachick started to go, but held up on it.
- 1:49:33So the count moves out to two balls, two strikes.
- 1:49:38Two-two count.
- 1:49:41Donald Meyer went to first-eight for New York and allowed one run on four hits.
- 1:49:47The pitch to Woodachick, got him that time.
- 1:49:49That's Devin Emi with the flight.
- 1:49:51Here's a gulk away from Woodachick up around the letters and caught the inside corner.
- 1:49:55And Woodachick has been called out on strike.
- 1:49:58Now, that's only the second strikeout at Houston batters tonight.
- 1:50:01Jimmy Wynn struck out in the second inning.
- 1:50:03Woodachick is caught looking here in the tenth inning, two away, and here's Joe Morgan.
- 1:50:08Little Joe has not had a hit, although the last two times up he has bothered Joe Pepitone.
- 1:50:15And he has forced Pepitone to make errors on the last two times that Morgan has hit that way.
- 1:50:21That's ball.
- 1:50:22Touched to go and then held up in time, ball one.
- 1:50:25Morgan is grounded out at the second base and grounded out to Pepitone unassisted.
- 1:50:30Safe on an air in the sixth and safe in the eighth on an air.
- 1:50:33Strike called.
- 1:50:34Just caught the outside corner above the knees.
- 1:50:37Ball one and strike one now on Morgan, two outs, nobody on.
- 1:50:42And the bottom of the tenth inning and the Yankees and the Astros are all tied up in one-one.
- 1:50:48With Morgan left-handed batter up here, Boyer's on the grass in front of third.
- 1:50:53Granite throws again now and Morgan takes a very high pitch for ball two and it's two and one.
- 1:50:58Two balls, one strike.
- 1:51:01Granite now has allowed two hits in the inning and two-thirds of the year's work.
- 1:51:06Both hits came in the ninth inning.
- 1:51:08As a looper back over Richardson, that base hit in the right center field, Tom Thirsk makes a scoop up on it,
- 1:51:14and Morgan holds him to first with a single.
- 1:51:17That's the third hit that Reneth has given up, Houston's seventh hit.
- 1:51:21The Yankees now lead by one in that department, eighth and seventh.
- 1:51:25Here's Al Framish.
- 1:51:27Well, Al has had two hits tonight.
- 1:51:36One of them was about to third.
- 1:51:39Now he's up here with two down and Morgan on first.
- 1:51:43Time is called as Reneth is going to tie his shoe.
- 1:51:48Triangle or left-handed batter?
- 1:51:53One-hole run of this game by Mickey Mantle.
- 1:51:56Riding left-handed on Thirsk Farrell, hit one of the center field seats.
- 1:52:01Here's the stretch, a lob throw to first by Reneth.
- 1:52:04And Joe Morgan gets back in.
- 1:52:11And a quick throw back over this time to Pepitone and Morgan again back in there.
- 1:52:16Gabrielle Gusto in a great light beer.
- 1:52:20Got slipped.
- 1:52:23Morgan edges away from first, got to watch him over there.
- 1:52:26There he goes.
- 1:52:27There's a swing and a miss to go by Smith, and they did not get him.
- 1:52:31Golem base.
- 1:52:36Two back over to cover on Smith's throw, and Morgan just beat him in.
- 1:52:42That's the fourth goal and base for Morgan this spring.
- 1:52:45He has tried four turns.
- 1:52:48Now the Astros have a winning run in scoring position with two odds
- 1:52:52and a good solid base wrap here now by Spangler with Nina Victory.
- 1:52:58Now it's two for four.
- 1:53:01Morgan possesses great speed.
- 1:53:03He's scored 47 bases last year in the Texas league.
- 1:53:08Doesn't take too big a lead.
- 1:53:09Kubek has shaded a round on him to hold him close.
- 1:53:12Reneth's pitch on the way to Spangler.
- 1:53:14There's a fly ball left field.
- 1:53:16Texas Lowe's coming fast.
- 1:53:18Oh, look at that net.
- 1:53:22Actually he had overrun the ball.
- 1:53:26And a retired defense.
- 1:53:29Moyer with his back to third base actually leaped high over his head
- 1:53:33and behind him to spear that one.
- 1:53:35And Houston has been retired here in the tenth inning.
- 1:53:38And Spangler spirals out to the third baseman, Fleet Moyer, down the left field line.
- 1:53:43No runs in the inning on one hit, but we know there is.
- 1:53:46One man was left on base.
- 1:53:48Our ballgame moves to the top of the eleventh inning now and still tied.
- 1:53:52Here's the pitch to Kubek.
- 1:53:54Just missed outside of the knees and there's one ball and one strike.
- 1:53:57Score tied 1-1 as we play ball in the top of the eleventh inning.
- 1:54:01New York and Houston.
- 1:54:03Quite a ballgame for the opening game in the Astrodome.
- 1:54:06There's a ball low outside.
- 1:54:09Ball two and strike one on Kubek.
- 1:54:11Kubek has struck out once tonight.
- 1:54:12Woodishick struck him out in the eighth.
- 1:54:14And the other three times he's flied out twice to center and once to left.
- 1:54:20Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:54:21Hopper to first base.
- 1:54:22Bond comes in, makes the play easily at first on a fifth and one down.
- 1:54:27Now, Tony Kubek opens the eleventh by grounding easily down the first base side to Wal Bond.
- 1:54:32That will bring up the center fielder, Tom Trash.
- 1:54:36Trash's switch hitter is batting right-ended.
- 1:54:43Trash is all for four tonight and Woodishick also struck him out in the ninth inning.
- 1:54:49Pete Nicholson is starting to warm up again for New York down the left of your line.
- 1:54:52Ball is outside.
- 1:54:56Outfield is deep for Trash.
- 1:55:00And they're playing this right-handed batter to pull.
- 1:55:03Why not have nobody on?
- 1:55:07Al Woodishick, south boy.
- 1:55:08Here's the pitch into Trash.
- 1:55:10A little bit outside of the knees.
- 1:55:11Ball two, two nothing.
- 1:55:13Woody now is now in his fourth inning.
- 1:55:16This is his longest spring of the spring.
- 1:55:20And he's given up two hits.
- 1:55:22Pitch to Trash, fouled off.
- 1:55:23Hopper off the right side of the plate.
- 1:55:26Actually, Woodishick now is on the verge of pitching as much tonight as he had in any of the previously regularly scheduled spring games.
- 1:55:40Ball two and strike one on Tom Trash.
- 1:55:43Foul ball.
- 1:55:44That hits the guy-wise holding the screen and then pops up into the seat behind the plate.
- 1:55:50Ball two, strike two.
- 1:55:53Well, it has been quite a night for the opening of the Astrodome here this evening.
- 1:55:57And it's not over yet.
- 1:55:58We have a one-one ball game in the 11th.
- 1:56:00There's a high fly ball.
- 1:56:01Deep left field.
- 1:56:03Springer back in the track, way back in the corner.
- 1:56:05He's got it.
- 1:56:07Ball hit about 335 feet down the left field line.
- 1:56:12And a mighty, mighty high one has Prash has flied out two away.
- 1:56:17Here's Fleet Boyer.
- 1:56:20Boyer has one of the eight Yankees hits tonight, a second-inning single.
- 1:56:26And on the official side, it's one for three.
- 1:56:28Called out on strikes.
- 1:56:30Lined out.
- 1:56:31And the last time up, Woodishick walked in.
- 1:56:33Fleet Boyer, right-handed batter.
- 1:56:36And Woodishick first pitch, Doyle.
- 1:56:38And there's a swing and a ground ball to third.
- 1:56:39That's their first chance tonight.
- 1:56:40There's a field to first.
- 1:56:41They've got him.
- 1:56:42Dewey Fier the drive.
- 1:56:43Three up and three down.
- 1:56:45No runs.
- 1:56:46No hits.
- 1:56:47No errors.
- 1:56:48And nobody left on base.
- 1:56:49At the end of 10-and-a-half innings to play, New York one, Houston one.
- 1:56:53Hector is not in the plans.
- 1:56:55Of course, as a startup in New York, but a good man to have around, as is John Blanchard.
- 1:57:00Both good utility men.
- 1:57:01There's a foul ball that's fielded by Vern Benson.
- 1:57:03And the man to third to first, he shoots it back at Woodishick.
- 1:57:07And there's one ball and one strike.
- 1:57:10Well, as we watch the amazing things that have happened here tonight in this amazing talent,
- 1:57:15you sort of look on to when the thing could suddenly be transformed to, oh, what a, watch that one.
- 1:57:20He really beat that one away.
- 1:57:22That pitch slipped completely out of his hands.
- 1:57:26And again, about 30 feet back over Ron Brands' head up against the screen.
- 1:57:30Ball two and strike one.
- 1:57:33And a field teacher, 10,000 of them, can be moved around to position into football.
- 1:57:39Here's the pitch on the way to Hector Lopez.
- 1:57:41Very low on the mid-air.
- 1:57:42And a four-foot and strike one.
- 1:57:44Woody has given up two bases on balls and really has had only one wild string.
- 1:57:49That was in the 10th inning when he hit Roger Maris and then got behind on Joe Pepitone,
- 1:57:53but he quickly settled down.
- 1:57:55Now he's behind on Lopez.
- 1:57:56Three balls, one strike.
- 1:57:58Off the inside corner.
- 1:57:59Lopez thought he had himself a walk on that one, but Mel Signer said no, and it's a four-count of three-two.
- 1:58:04Two out, nobody on base.
- 1:58:06Should Lopez get on, Bobby Richardson will be up next.
- 1:58:10Woodishick winds again.
- 1:58:11The three-two pitch, fly ball, center field.
- 1:58:14Jimmy Wynne barely moves for this one.
- 1:58:16Couple steps to his right to retire the side.
- 1:58:18Three up and three down.
- 1:58:20So Woodishick now has retired seven batters in a row since he hit Maris in the arm in the 10th inning.
- 1:58:26No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on base.
- 1:58:29We go now to the bottom half of inning number 12 to score New York one and Houston one.
- 1:58:35Last half of the 12th inning now we have a new pitcher for the New York Yankees, right-hander Pete Mickelson,
- 1:58:41and come on to take over for Hal Renup, who has lifted for a French batter.
- 1:58:46Jimmy Wynne will lead off.
- 1:58:48He'll be followed by Bob Lilis and then Ron Brand.
- 1:58:51Mickelson spells his name M-I-double-K-E-L-S-E-N, Mickelson.
- 1:58:59This will be his seventh game this spring.
- 1:59:01He's pitched 16 innings, allowed nine hits, and has a real good ERA of only 1.13 for nine innings.
- 1:59:10Thirteen strikeouts in 16 innings and six walks.
- 1:59:13He's pitching like he's trying to make the starting staff here for the Yankees this spring.
- 1:59:16Here's Jim Wynne.
- 1:59:17He's singled his last time.
- 1:59:19Right-handed batter, first pitch, low ball one.
- 1:59:22Wynne has had one for four.
- 1:59:23He's rounded out twice and has struck out one.
- 1:59:29Nobody out, nobody on base.
- 1:59:31Bottom half of the 12th inning in this ballgame is tied 1-1.
- 1:59:34It's been that way since the sixth inning.
- 1:59:36Wynne checks.
- 1:59:37It was in there, first strike on the inside corner of the bell, one and one.
- 1:59:41Mickelson stands 6-2, weighs 215 pounds, and a native New Yorker.
- 1:59:48Last year with the Yankees, he won seven ballgames and lost four.
- 1:59:54Came up through the Yankee system.
- 1:59:55Here's the pitch now.
- 1:59:56A tag ball.
- 1:59:57Big cut on that one by Wynne, and he bounces it right at his feet.
- 2:00:02One ball, two strikes.
- 2:00:04Bob Willis has moved to the on-deck circle off the right side.
- 2:00:10Manager Janney P. now has used three pitchers tonight.
- 2:00:14Mel Stommelmeyer went eight.
- 2:00:17This half of the 11th inning and Rusty Staub will lead off and before he steps in,
- 2:00:21let's pause here for station identification.
- 2:00:24This is the Astros, baseball network.
- 2:00:27And this is KRLV, AM and FM Dallas, where the baseball action is.
- 2:00:32It's one past 10.
- 2:00:38They have two pitchers warming up now.
- 2:00:40As I mentioned for New York, right-hander Pete Mickelson down the left-field line,
- 2:00:43and right-hander Claude Ramon has started to warm up for Houston down in right field.
- 2:00:48Here is Rusty Staub, bottom of the 11th, four-tide 1-1.
- 2:00:54Rusty looking for his first hit.
- 2:00:56He's all for four.
- 2:00:59Rusty's swung out twice to Roger Maris in right field, has hit into a double play,
- 2:01:04and was safe on a fielder's choice.
- 2:01:07All right, up for right-hander, throws the first pitch to Staub.
- 2:01:10Right throw on the inside corner to the ball strike one.
- 2:01:15Mickey Maddell-Holmert in the sixth.
- 2:01:17The Astros tied it up in the bottom half.
- 2:01:19That's where she stands right now, 1-1.
- 2:01:21Renup's next pitch, foul ball just underneath us here in the middle of the defense.
- 2:01:30And Staub is down on Renup here at two strikes.
- 2:01:36Right-center fielder Tom Sress is over in right-center field for Staub, but Hector Lopez in left,
- 2:01:40not throwing around too much on him.
- 2:01:42Renup's next pitch now, there's a high top foul.
- 2:01:45This will be out of play also.
- 2:01:46Back up and over the screen.
- 2:01:48Oh, but hits the top of the screen and then bounces into the seat.
- 2:01:51That was an easy play for that fellow.
- 2:01:53Just took it on the back.
- 2:01:57Two strikes.
- 2:01:59Renup has a new baseball now and rubs it up a little bit.
- 2:02:07Renup has a sign again from Bob Smith.
- 2:02:11Here's the wind up and the next pitch to Rusty.
- 2:02:13Throwing in a foul ball, just got a piece of that one.
- 2:02:16Throw Rusty still in there.
- 2:02:18Smith didn't hold onto it.
- 2:02:21Kirk Farrell of course threw the first pitch tonight and Tom was called after the first pitch to Mickey Maddell
- 2:02:27to open the stadium with the ball and then was handed over to the president of the National League, Warren Giles.
- 2:02:33Here's the pitch.
- 2:02:34Throwing in a message from Cunard.
- 2:02:35Renup came with a good fastball up around the letter.
- 2:02:38One out now and that will bring up Wal Barnes.
- 2:02:40That's the second strike out for Renup, the third for Yankee Fitching.
- 2:02:49And as two for four, a double and a single.
- 2:02:53Incidentally, that first pitch thrown tonight by Farrell is going to the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown.
- 2:03:02Here's the pitch in to Walters.
- 2:03:03Ground ball, first face shot.
- 2:03:04Easy play for Joe Cuppatone.
- 2:03:06An assisted foul and that's rounded out and they're two away.
- 2:03:10Well, here's Aspermati now.
- 2:03:13Aspero is over four.
- 2:03:15Tim Smith, the Hall of Fame's curator, will have stepped up baseball for the president of Warren Giles.
- 2:03:23Round two out, nobody on.
- 2:03:26Aspero has flied out, rounded out twice.
- 2:03:28One, see it into a double play and is fouled out.
- 2:03:33Outfield remains deep and around the left side.
- 2:03:37Here's the pitch on the way by Renup.
- 2:03:38An Aspero checked his swing on a curve ball that broke down in the way in a 4-0-1.
- 2:03:42One and nothing.
- 2:03:44That Detroit-Milwaukee game is over and the Braves won it tonight from the Tigers 6-3.
- 2:03:54Job is struck out.
- 2:03:55Bond is grounded out.
- 2:03:56Aspero takes a fast ball low and inside.
- 2:03:59Ball two and no strikes.
- 2:04:02This is the third inning for Renup.
- 2:04:08Woodishick now has pitched four innings in relief of Kirk Farrell and Mel Sattelmeyer with the start-up of New York.
- 2:04:15Here's the pitch to Aspero, high top foul out of play, headed for the deep off the right side.
- 2:04:21The highest that any of the foul balls have reached tonight has been the second seeding level here,
- 2:04:26and as I mentioned earlier, there are six seeding levels.
- 2:04:33It's a pretty good hope to get up too much higher than that.
- 2:04:38What a set again.
- 2:04:39Now two ball, one strike count on Aspero.
- 2:04:41Here's the pitch.
- 2:04:42Ground ball to the shortstop.
- 2:04:43Way back in the hole.
- 2:04:44Kuvec throws the first lots of time.
- 2:04:45Aspero is out to retire the side.
- 2:04:48So three up and three down, and that ends 11 innings.
- 2:04:51No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left on base.
- 2:04:54Still all tied up here at the Astrodome.
- 2:04:56The Yankees won and the Astros won.
- 2:05:01Now we're on to the 12th inning here now in a 1-1 game, and catcher Bob Schmidt will be the leadoff batter.
- 2:05:14Both runs came in the sixth inning tonight.
- 2:05:20Schmidt actually is not on the Yankee roster,
- 2:05:24and of course it's not necessary for the ball clubs to tear down to the season's opening 28 until Monday.
- 2:05:31Here's the pitch.
- 2:05:32Schmidt, right-handed batter, takes a strike, strike one.
- 2:05:34This is only the third game in which Schmidt has appeared.
- 2:05:37He's done it about only three times, has no hits, and has struck out two of the three times of the play.
- 2:05:43Strike on the inside corner above the knees.
- 2:05:45One ball, one strike.
- 2:05:48On the lead batter for New York, not half of the 12th inning.
- 2:05:53Here's Woodishick's next pitch now.
- 2:05:55Going outside, ball, two, strike one.
- 2:05:58Both ends are still occupied with right-hander Claude Ramon loosening up for Houston,
- 2:06:03and right-hander Pete Nicholson for New York.
- 2:06:08Woodishick throws again now, and there's a curve ball coming, and he's got it on that one, and he's drug him out.
- 2:06:14That was a very bad pitch as far as Schmidt was concerned, a good one for Wood.
- 2:06:18He was throwing low and inside, breaking ball that Schmidt struck out on.
- 2:06:22So there's one down now.
- 2:06:26That's the fifth strike out for Woodishick.
- 2:06:29This by far is the best that Woody has looked this spring,
- 2:06:32and I might mention again the best that Farrell has looked in the seven innings that he worked tonight.
- 2:06:38Ross Machito is coming on to pinch hit now, while the pitcher Harold Linnett.
- 2:06:43Machito is the first year player. He spells his name F-M-O-S-C-H-I-Double-T-O. M-O-S-C-H-I-Double-T-O Machito.
- 2:06:53He's an outfielder and played quite a bit of center field this spring for the Yankees.
- 2:06:57Machito now batting for Rinne.
- 2:07:04One out, nobody on base.
- 2:07:06Oh, we'll have a look at Pete Nicholson in the bottom half of the 12th inning.
- 2:07:09Pitch is outside of ball. Ball on, one and nothing.
- 2:07:15Hector Lopez, the top of the batting order for the Yankees, will be up next.
- 2:07:19Here's the next pitch by Woodishick.
- 2:07:21Ground ball to the shortstop Bob Willis.
- 2:07:23Big hop for the flea and the sort of first in lots of time.
- 2:07:25Machito has found a shot through away.
- 2:07:27Willis upon.
- 2:07:30Here's Hector Lopez who replaced Mickey Mantle in left field.
- 2:07:33Mantle, bothered by hamstring muscle injury to his right leg, did quite through seven innings tonight.
- 2:07:40Lopez has done up only once in the 10th inning.
- 2:07:42He struck out. And it was Woodishick who struck him out.
- 2:07:45What he's been pitching since the eighth.
- 2:07:47So he is in his fifth inning. This may be his last.
- 2:07:49Here's the pitch now. Ball outside, ball one.
- 2:07:53Hector Lopez, right-handed batter.
- 2:07:57Hector is not in the plans.
- 2:07:59Of course has a start-up in New York, but a good man to have around, as is John Blanchard.
- 2:08:04Both good utility men.
- 2:08:06There's a foul ball that's fielded by Vern Benson, the Yankee coach at first.
- 2:08:09He shoots it back out to Woodishick.
- 2:08:12And it's one ball and one strike.
- 2:08:15Well, as we watch the amazing things that have happened here tonight in this amazing palace,
- 2:08:20you sort of look on to when the thing that suddenly transformed the...
- 2:08:23Oh, Woody, watch that one. You really see that one away.
- 2:08:27That's it, slipped completely out of his hands.
- 2:08:30And it hit about 30 feet back over Ron Blanchard up against the screen.
- 2:08:35Ball two and strike one.
- 2:08:38All the field kids here, 10,000 of them, can be moved around to position into football.
- 2:08:44Here's the pitch on the way to Hector Lopez, very low in the dirt.
- 2:08:47And it's ball three and strike one.
- 2:08:49Woody has given up two bases on balls and really has had only one wild string.
- 2:08:54That was in the 10th inning when he hit Roger Maris and then got behind on Joe Pepitone,
- 2:08:58but he quickly settled down.
- 2:09:00Now he's behind on Lopez, three balls, one strike.
- 2:09:03Caught the inside corner.
- 2:09:04Lopez thought he had himself a walk on that one, but Mel Sanders said no,
- 2:09:07and it's a folk out of three-two.
- 2:09:09Two out, nobody on base.
- 2:09:11Should Lopez get on, Bobby Richardson will be up there.
- 2:09:15Woodishick winds again.
- 2:09:16The three-two pitch, fly ball, center field.
- 2:09:19Jimmy Wynn barely moves for this one.
- 2:09:21A couple steps to his right, three tire to side.
- 2:09:24Three up and three down.
- 2:09:25So Woodishick now has retired seven batters in a row since he hit Maris in the arm in the 10th inning.
- 2:09:32No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on base.
- 2:09:35We go now to the bottom half of inning number 12 to score New York one and Houston one.
- 2:09:40Last half of the 12th inning now, we have a new pitcher for the New York Yankees,
- 2:09:44right-hander Pete Mickelson has come on to take over for Hal Renup,
- 2:09:48who was listed for a pinch batter.
- 2:09:50Jimmy Wynn will lead off.
- 2:09:53He'll be followed by Bob Lilis and then Ron Brand.
- 2:09:56Mickelson spells his name M-I-double-K-E-L-S-E-N, Mickelson.
- 2:10:05This will be his seventh game this frame.
- 2:10:07He's hit 16 innings, allowed nine hits, and has a real good ERA of only 1.13 for nine innings.
- 2:10:16Thirteen strikeouts and 16 innings and six walks.
- 2:10:19Mickelson is pitching like he's trying to make the starting staff here for the Yankees this spring.
- 2:10:23Here's Jim Wynn, he's singled his last time.
- 2:10:25Right-handed batter, first pitch, low ball one.
- 2:10:28Wynn has had one for four, he's grounded out twice, and has struck out once.
- 2:10:36Nobody out, nobody on base.
- 2:10:37Bottom half of the 12th inning in this ballgame is tied 1-1.
- 2:10:40It's been that way since the sixth inning.
- 2:10:42Wynn checks, it was in there for a strike.
- 2:10:44On the inside corner, it's a bell, one and one.
- 2:10:48Wynn stands 6-2, weighs 215 pounds, and a native New Yorker.
- 2:10:54Last year with the Yankees, he won seven ballgames and lost four.
- 2:11:00Came up through the Yankee system, here's the pitch now, foul ball, big cut on that one by Wynn, and he bounces it right at his feet.
- 2:11:08One ball, two strikes.
- 2:11:11Bob Lilis has moved to the on-deck circle off the right side.
- 2:11:17Major Johnny Keen now has used three pitchers tonight.
- 2:11:21Mel Stottlemeyer went eighth, Al Rineth pitched three.
- 2:11:25Here's the one and two pitch to win, very low outside.
- 2:11:29And Schmidt had to move fast to stop that one down and off the right side, and it's ball two strike two.
- 2:11:34Claude Ramon still warming up for Houston down the right side.
- 2:11:39If we get a man on, we'll probably have a pinch hitter for Woodishake.
- 2:11:43I think Woody's pitched as much as he's going to tonight anyway.
- 2:11:46Big pitch to win now, ground ball back in the hole, beautiful stop by Kubek, throw-out in time.
- 2:11:52Well, I'll say one thing, for the left side of that Yankee infielder tonight, they have been magicians.
- 2:11:58That ball actually bounced off Boyer's glove, and then Kubek backhanded it.
- 2:12:03He'll make a play to first base, but no way to get Wynn, he's back to good feet.
- 2:12:07And Wynn, how has his second hit tonight? That gauge in two for five.
- 2:12:13Of course, it's the first hit off Nicholson.
- 2:12:16The hits are all even now, runs even 1-1, hits the side up 8-8.
- 2:12:20Now they're watching for the punt off the bat of Bob Lilis.
- 2:12:22Nobody out, went on first base, Fleet Boyer moves in from third.
- 2:12:26Here's the stretch by Nicholson.
- 2:12:28First pitch to Lilis, pitch out, nobody goes anywhere though.
- 2:12:31Wynn was not going.
- 2:12:33Schmidt called for a pitch out on the first pitch to Lilis, as both Pempetone and Boyer broke in.
- 2:12:40Three years old for Boyer tonight, rounded out twice, lined out, and was safe on the fielder's choice.
- 2:12:46Nicholson checks the sign again with Schmidt.
- 2:12:49Lilis tried to bunt Wynn down to scoring position.
- 2:12:51Here comes Boyer in from third, high inside pitch.
- 2:12:53Lilis was squared around to drop one down, but Nicholson's pitch was up around the head, and it's all two no strikes.
- 2:13:01This is the bottom of the 12th, Gorthside 1-1, 47,876 watching this one tonight.
- 2:13:10That's about 3,000 over capacity.
- 2:13:14Boyer in close to third again now, Wynn takes his lead off first base.
- 2:13:18Here comes Boyer, here comes Pempetone, Lilis takes a strike on the inside corner of the knees.
- 2:13:24Possibly the take was on there, pitch was in around the knees.
- 2:13:28Pempetone was down to bunt it, but he didn't off-red it.
- 2:13:32There's nobody out, and Ron Brandt, the catcher, will be up next.
- 2:13:37Ball two, strike one.
- 2:13:40Boyer about 25 feet in front of third.
- 2:13:42Here comes Pempetone pulling away from first base, and Pempetone quickly ran back as Nicholson shot the ball over to first.
- 2:13:51But no chance to get a win there.
- 2:13:57Boyer still in close to third. Ball two, strike one on Lilis.
- 2:14:00Wynn takes the big lead. He goes off just about as far as there goes Wynn down, swinging the ground ball foul.
- 2:14:05Oh, almost got it by Boyer.
- 2:14:08But it was fouled by quite a margin in between Jim Busby and third base.
- 2:14:12So Wynn was cracking on a hit and run there, and it's ball two and strike two.
- 2:14:21Wynn with good speed on first base and nobody out.
- 2:14:26This will take off the bunt situation now pretty much with a two-ball, two-strike count on Lilis, so Boyer is backed up now.
- 2:14:32And he's just about even with third.
- 2:14:34They are not expecting the bunt here with two strikes on Lilis.
- 2:14:39Wynn away from Pempetone on first.
- 2:14:41Pempetone sneaks over in the grass now.
- 2:14:43Here's the pitch, and Lilis did bunt, and he strikes out.
- 2:14:45Bouted off back into the screen.
- 2:14:47Well, he took the gamble there.
- 2:14:49Very rarely do you see a normal batter-in-the-order bunt on the third strike.
- 2:14:54But they thought the percentages were good there with Lilis a pretty fair-funder, but he just couldn't come up with it, and he bunted out and struck out.
- 2:15:01Mickelson's first strikeout.
- 2:15:03That's the fourth strikeout by Yankee pitching.
- 2:15:05One away now with Wynn on first, and here's Ron Brand.
- 2:15:09Brand has one for four.
- 2:15:11He tripled in the third.
- 2:15:13Slide to center.
- 2:15:14The last two times up, he's bounced to Boyer and to Kubik.
- 2:15:19And Wynn takes the big lead away from Pempetone on first.
- 2:15:22Stretched by Mickelson. He draws the throw.
- 2:15:25He'll get a few throws over there with that lead.
- 2:15:28But Wynn has no trouble getting back in.
- 2:15:30Ron Brand, right-handed batter.
- 2:15:32Score card one-one, bottom half of the twelfth.
- 2:15:35Another throw to first.
- 2:15:37And Wynn again back in.
- 2:15:40Jim Beacham has moved to the on-deck circle.
- 2:15:42He'll pinch back for Hal Wittesick, so we'll have Claude Ramon on on the thirteenth, but this ballgame is continuing.
- 2:15:48One out.
- 2:15:50Wynn breaks and then stops. Brand fouls it off.
- 2:15:52Hopper into the Yankee dugout, back to third.
- 2:15:55And it's one strike on the Houston Catchers.
- 2:16:01Mickelson got a new ball from Mel Steiner, doesn't like it, and asked for a new one.
- 2:16:06Stoudelmeier, in the eight innings that he worked for New York tonight, allowed the one run.
- 2:16:11Gave up four hits.
- 2:16:13And Renup did not allow a run, fixed three innings and allowed three hits.
- 2:16:17And Mickelson is given the one hit in this inning, his first on the mound for New York.
- 2:16:21Wynn again takes the big lead away from Puppet Stone.
- 2:16:24There he goes.
- 2:16:25There's a swing and a miss, and Smith doesn't get the throw away.
- 2:16:28Stow and base.
- 2:16:30Smith juggled that ball.
- 2:16:32He didn't have a good grip on it.
- 2:16:34Just as he cocked his arm, it slipped out of his fingers.
- 2:16:37Although he held it, he could not get the throw away.
- 2:16:39So Wynn gets the throw and base.
- 2:16:41That's the second Houston stolen base tonight.
- 2:16:44Houston stole in the tenth inning.
- 2:16:47So for the second time, the next running now, Houston has the winning run on second base.
- 2:16:53One out.
- 2:16:54And a two-strike out on Ron Brand.
- 2:16:56Here's Mickelson's pitch.
- 2:16:57Brand swings and he misses.
- 2:16:59Lost the bat and struck him out.
- 2:17:02The pitch that Wynn stole on was a beauty of a change-up, that really fooled Brand.
- 2:17:09Nellie Fox is going to bat.
- 2:17:10They had Beecham in there, but now they've called on Nellie Fox.
- 2:17:14Two strikeouts in a row here for Mickelson.
- 2:17:31Ron Harris had Jim Beecham in the on-deck circle, and I assume the move here is that he was hoping for an extra base hit off the bat of Beecham,
- 2:17:38which was foul, and now with a winning run on second, he's put in Nellie Fox.
- 2:17:43Here's the pitch by Mickelson.
- 2:17:44Swing and a miss.
- 2:17:45That's ball.
- 2:17:46And it's one strike on Nellie.
- 2:17:48Nellie has seen very little spring action.
- 2:17:53This is only his fifth game.
- 2:17:56He has three for twelve.
- 2:17:57The batting average is 250.
- 2:17:58He has one run batted in, and Nellie has one triple.
- 2:18:01Little left-handed batter.
- 2:18:03Mickelson throws.
- 2:18:04Foul off the left side.
- 2:18:05So Mickelson quickly gets out in front of Fox.
- 2:18:08Two strikes.
- 2:18:09When on second base, he represents the winning run.
- 2:18:12Last of the twelfths.
- 2:18:14Score five-one-one.
- 2:18:18Outfield, of course, is shallowed up and they have that very familiar Fox shift on.
- 2:18:23Threshing left center field.
- 2:18:25Lopez shaded toward the left field foul line.
- 2:18:28And Maris shaded over in the right center field.
- 2:18:33Nellie back in again now.
- 2:18:34O-two count.
- 2:18:35Two outs.
- 2:18:36And Mickelson takes a quick check on winning second base.
- 2:18:39Here's the pitch and Fox walks it under center field.
- 2:18:42And the ball goes over.
- 2:18:44Here's the play.
- 2:18:45You can hear that.
- 2:18:47You can hear that.
- 2:18:48All hell is gone.
- 2:18:59As delivered with a looping swing over center field.
- 2:19:02I'll tell you one thing, Kubek just about came up with another sparkler.
- 2:19:07He didn't miss catching that by very much.
- 2:19:10Win scores and Fox is a pinch hitter's one in here in the twelfth inning two to one.
- 2:19:16In the twelfth inning one run on two hits, there were no errors.
- 2:19:19One man was left on base.
- 2:19:21And the final score here tonight, now the Astros winning this one tonight, by the score of two to one.
- 2:19:27Oh, what a ball game this was.
- 2:19:29For Houston, two runs on nine hits.
- 2:19:33No errors.
- 2:19:35And three, four, five, six, seven, eight men were left on base.
- 2:19:39For New York, one run on eight hits.
- 2:19:42Yankees committed three errors tonight.
- 2:19:44And the Bombers stranded five, six, seven, eight, nine in this twelfth inning ball game.
- 2:19:49The winning pitcher is Hal Woodishick.
- 2:19:51And the losing pitcher is Pete Mickelson.
- 2:19:54The official pay to tennis here tonight, $47,876.
- 2:20:00And the time of the ball game was two hours and 35 minutes.
- 2:20:04Well, fans, that wraps up our play-by-play story here tonight with the Astros winning over New York by the score of two to one.
