- 0:02Melissa Shere Beek: Hi. I'm Melissa Beek, and welcome to Beek on Being. Twenty five years ago, I started a weekly column in a section of the Miami Herald focusing on topics of shared humanity, human interest pieces, and highlighting people creating a better world. Always coming from a place of kindness and connection, this podcast is a natural extension of that. A safe place for everyone to share personal or professional perspectives, talk openly, ask questions without fear, to keep connecting, keep learning, keep growing, keep being.
- 0:32This is Beek on Being. Today's episode is Beek on Being Sisters. Anyone who knows or has little sisters knows that they follow you around and like to do whatever you are doing. So it's no different with this podcast. You girls really love the Quickie Questions.
- 0:51We're gonna talk about Quickie Questions that specifically relate to sisterhood, mostly.
- 0:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh. That's good. Alright.
- 0:58Jessica Shere Coggins: Wait. We go from this to once a month? Is that what you just said?
- 1:03Melissa Shere Beek: Yes. Yes. You're not coming in every week. You you have to you have to do something else. Biweekly.
- 1:09You're not doing biweekly. Anyways, go ahead and introduce yourself.
- 1:13Samantha Shere Sharpe: I'm the middle sister, the blonde Samantha.
- 1:17Jessica Shere Coggins: I am the third and last sister, the
- 1:20best, Jessica.
- 1:22Melissa Shere Beek: The baby. Our sisterhood is tight. But what do your other friends offer or provide that the other two of us don't? Like an objective opinion or a chance to complain about the other ones of us?
- 1:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: Well, Jessica has a lot more friends than I do.
- 1:36Jessica Shere Coggins: Not true.
- 1:37Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. I think my friend, well, the one that I can really count on
- 1:41Melissa Shere Beek: for, like We know.
- 1:43Samantha Shere Sharpe: Trust the most. She understands who I who I'm talking about when I need to ask. Like, if I have to go to her for advice, why I go to her is because she understands the story, and it's too much for me to explain to the two of you. Okay. I think we go to each other
- 2:00Jessica Shere Coggins: more like build in mom. Yeah.
- 2:02Samantha Shere Sharpe: The the only family problems we go to each other.
- 2:06Jessica Shere Coggins: The the only thing that my friends provide, and it's no offense to you
- 2:12Melissa Shere Beek: Mhmm. No. I'm not offended.
- 2:13Jessica Shere Coggins: Is that, like, if I need something, I can call them and pick up my kid. I do that. Like, you're in a different era. It's different for you now. It's different era.
- 2:21It's fine. But those are the little things I think, like, the the little community that you need, like, oh, can you take him to the basketball game and I'll take
- 2:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: home? Right.
- 2:29Jessica Shere Coggins: Like, those
- 2:30Melissa Shere Beek: because you have kids in common age and doing Same things and seeing
- 2:33Jessica Shere Coggins: what they've it. But they don't provide, like, the stability that you two provide. Okay. Do you know what I mean? Yeah.
- 2:41That might just be more me looking at friends rather than my sisters.
- 2:44Samantha Shere Sharpe: But I don't think we go to each other, like, for friend problems. We go to each other for family problems.
- 2:49Jessica Shere Coggins: I go for friend problems.
- 2:50Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I think I hear both Mhmm. From both of you.
- 2:52Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, maybe. I don't have many friends, so
- 2:56Jessica Shere Coggins: Not true. Okay. Any friends that you actually like and trust?
- 3:00Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, maybe. Yeah.
- 3:02Jessica Shere Coggins: That's it. Yeah.
- 3:03Melissa Shere Beek: Do you think that our relationship with each other helps improve your mental health?
- 3:06Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh, yeah. I was I feel better already being in here.
- 3:09Samantha Shere Sharpe: That's why I like doing this. We can't do this monthly.
- 3:12Jessica Shere Coggins: I'm sorry.
- 3:12Samantha Shere Sharpe: This is extremely therapeutic. I think it was really good for us, the three of us. Because I feel like we got off the rails for a little bit several years ago, you know, recently. I think that this has really strengthened our relationship.
- 3:29Melissa Shere Beek: A connection. Totally.
- 3:30Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. Totally, totally, like I see that.
- 3:33Melissa Shere Beek: It's also hard for me to pin you guys down for, like, coffee or tea or something like that because your kids are all over the place with different schedules. So
- 3:41Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. Schedule my schedule changes every day. Unless I have something set in place. Otherwise, it's all over.
- 3:46Melissa Shere Beek: Alright. We've got you set for each month in place.
- 3:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: Okay. Monthly. That's not bimonthly. That's monthly. You know what that means.
- 3:53Melissa Shere Beek: Feel like you're still gonna show up.
- 3:55Yeah. I had a feeling. Okay. What's the hardest thing about our our sisterhood?
- 4:03Jessica Shere Coggins: Are we are
- 4:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: we we go
- 4:04Melissa Shere Beek: Go ahead. Go back. I feel like
- 4:06Jessica Shere Coggins: offending someone by saying something.
- 4:08Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, you think you're gonna hurt one of our feelings by saying something like this?
- 4:11Jessica Shere Coggins: Yes. Okay. But I pretty much say stuff. Yeah. But, yeah, I think that's my only fear.
- 4:15Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. I think I love the fact that we each have a grasp of mom. Like, we all, like like, we all deal with mom differently, but we all
- 4:26Jessica Shere Coggins: Yes.
- 4:26Samantha Shere Sharpe: Can deal with her. Yeah. I Well We all yeah. We all have different Relationships with her too, I think.
- 4:33Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. But we all handle different things that she does differently.
- 4:35Samantha Shere Sharpe: Like Right.
- 4:36Melissa Shere Beek: I know I can pick up and do one thing for her that you guys wouldn't, and then you can do something for her that I wouldn't necessarily do. Okay. So what's the best thing about sisterhood then? Wait. Wait.
- 4:46Do we even do the hardest thing about sisterhood? Offending each other. That's what you think then.
- 4:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: Say. The hardest thing I don't think there's been I think try I don't know. I don't know.
- 5:01Jessica Shere Coggins: I will tell you, though, a lot of friends do always try and ask me, what's it like with your sisters? Like, what kind of relationship do you have with your sisters?
- 5:12Melissa Shere Beek: What do you say?
- 5:14Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh, I'll well, put me on the spot.
- 5:16Melissa Shere Beek: What what do you say?
- 5:17Jessica Shere Coggins: No. I say that it I'm extremely lucky that it's amazing to be able to have them and go to them. But, yeah, I think people are interested in the dynamic.
- 5:26Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. I think it's funny when people They ask see us at school and they're like, you're sisters.
- 5:31Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. Some people know and then some people still
- 5:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: And then some people are scared of us. A lot of people are scared of us.
- 5:36Jessica Shere Coggins: I think.
- 5:37Melissa Shere Beek: Right. Because you two come as a threat together?
- 5:38Samantha Shere Sharpe: Well, we share information. So I think they're afraid that if they say something Yes. One, the other one will know.
- 5:43Jessica Shere Coggins: That for sure.
- 5:44Melissa Shere Beek: I think that goes with sisterhood. If if somebody doesn't like you or they're being mean to you, they're No.
- 5:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: They're they're on the shit list.
- 5:50Melissa Shere Beek: They're done. Exactly. It's a it's a one for all, all for one
- 5:53Jessica Shere Coggins: You get, like, a nasty stare.
- 5:55Melissa Shere Beek: Well, I
- 5:55don't give a nasty stare. I'm just not gonna pay you any mind.
- 5:58Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. We're very gossipy.
- 6:00Melissa Shere Beek: You are?
- 6:01Samantha Shere Sharpe: We just we just threw some gossip before we started.
- 6:04Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, well, the two of you are. Yeah. The two of you gossip amongst each other. But also, you're sort of in the same boat.
- 6:10Jessica Shere Coggins: And you feel safe, though.
- 6:11Samantha Shere Sharpe: That's the good thing. Oh,
- 6:13Melissa Shere Beek: yeah. But you're also in the same boat because your children are similar ages, so you have lots more to discuss. Yeah.
- 6:20Jessica Shere Coggins: We do.
- 6:21Samantha Shere Sharpe: I know. I miss our I miss our volunteer days. I fucked that one up.
- 6:26Jessica Shere Coggins: You're not the only one. Don't worry.
- 6:28Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. I'm sad. Okay.
- 6:29Melissa Shere Beek: I feel sometimes excluded Yeah. From that.
- 6:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: I could see that.
- 6:34Melissa Shere Beek: When we get together and we talk and you come in, both of you, and you're like, and I'm like, wait. Wait.
- 6:39What are we talking about? Where are we going? Wait. Who's that? And you're just like, and I'm like, wait.
- 6:43What? And I'm clueless to that because I don't have that shared
- 6:48Jessica Shere Coggins: That's one of
- 6:48Melissa Shere Beek: the best guys have.
- 6:50Jessica Shere Coggins: Honestly, to be able to have that.
- 6:52Samantha Shere Sharpe: I'm sorry.
- 6:53Jessica Shere Coggins: Okay. Sorry.
- 6:54Melissa Shere Beek: I know some of your cast
- 6:55of characters.
- 6:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: I got fired from a volunteer job at high at a high school. Like, who does that? Who who gets fired being
- 7:03Melissa Shere Beek: a cool mom?
- 7:04Samantha Shere Sharpe: Okay. I was being a cool mom.
- 7:05Jessica Shere Coggins: You're not the only one. There was, like, several
- 7:07Samantha Shere Sharpe: others. Said to the principal, I apologized. I said, I asked her for another chance, and she's no. No.
- 7:15Jessica Shere Coggins: I just That's not because of you, though. That's because she had to make you out. Yeah.
- 7:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: I guess so. I don't know. I cried for a whole week. But then I think you cry a little bit more than a week.
- 7:26Jessica Shere Coggins: Awesome. I gotta be honest,
- 7:27you're not missing anything. The rules have changed
- 7:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: so But I miss you. That's the whole problem. Nice. I miss you well, I missed you coming in late. I missed
- 7:36Melissa Shere Beek: you. Not doing anything.
- 7:37Samantha Shere Sharpe: Not doing anything. I missed when our girls
- 7:40Melissa Shere Beek: Your presence.
- 7:40Samantha Shere Sharpe: I missed when our girls would come in together, and they were happy to see us. Yeah.
- 7:44Jessica Shere Coggins: I missed That is true. I would just come in and She did all the work. It was great.
- 7:48Samantha Shere Sharpe: I loved it. Okay. So the best Okay.
- 7:50Melissa Shere Beek: The best thing about sisterhood is that Yeah. You take
- 7:53Jessica Shere Coggins: The best thing about sisterhood
- 7:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: more excluded. He's like, get me back in this conversation.
- 7:57Melissa Shere Beek: No. No. But the best thing about sisterhood is you can gossip amongst each other.
- 8:00Jessica Shere Coggins: It's more than that. It's just being able to have a person to go to immediately. Pick up the phone. They know that you'll pick up. Like They won't bullshit you.
- 8:08Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. It's just I know that you all know that I will pick up for you, but Right. I know that neither of you pick up for me.
- 8:14Jessica Shere Coggins: It's really hard to pick up
- 8:16for you. Or, like, in the middle of stuff.
- 8:18Melissa Shere Beek: Neither of you. That's like my one my one hardest thing about me is that
- 8:23Jessica Shere Coggins: like, I'll be honest, I'll see you call, and I won't be able to pick up, and I will not even remember that you called to call you back.
- 8:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: Okay. You called me on Sunday. I need you to call me right back. I need to hear what happened Saturday night. I called her back, still haven't heard from her.
- 8:37It's now Wednesday. It's so bad. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. But I'm not a good initial phone call was
- 8:45Melissa Shere Beek: You're a good friend.
- 8:46Samantha Shere Sharpe: I'm not a good friend.
- 8:47Melissa Shere Beek: In person.
- 8:49Jessica Shere Coggins: Of. In communication, I'm terrible. Yeah.
- 8:50Samantha Shere Sharpe: But you called me. I need to speak to you right now. I need to hear everything. I'll call you back. Nothing.
- 8:55Melissa Shere Beek: I think Okay. Three words that describe our sisterhood.
- 8:59Samantha Shere Sharpe: Loyalty.
- 9:01Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, that's a good one.
- 9:02Samantha Shere Sharpe: Unconditional.
- 9:03Jessica Shere Coggins: I like that. Stability. I'll go back to that word.
- 9:06Melissa Shere Beek: Okay.
- 9:11Jessica Shere Coggins: And spot. A safe space.
- 9:13Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah.
- 9:15Jessica Shere Coggins: And honesty. And, yeah, truthfulness.
- 9:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: What are your three words?
- 9:19Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, mine were support
- 9:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: Uh-huh.
- 9:21Melissa Shere Beek: Trust
- 9:22Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah.
- 9:22Melissa Shere Beek: And hilarity.
- 9:23Jessica Shere Coggins: That's a good one.
- 9:24Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Feel like whenever we get together, we end up pissing our pants with laughter over something, someone, some something. Yeah. Like, giggle out of control.
- 9:35Jessica Shere Coggins: Yes. Okay. We could just look at each other and giggle.
- 9:40Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. Now yeah. That's true. One or three or two, however many you want, words that describe us and our individual personalities. Like Sam, how you see Jess and I, and Jess, how you see Sam and I, and how I see the two of you.
- 9:59And I didn't prepare because I didn't think of anything yet. I just made these questions.
- 10:02Jessica Shere Coggins: So Oh, I found a word for me.
- 10:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't I don't understand the question.
- 10:06Melissa Shere Beek: Can you repeat the question?
- 10:07Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't understand.
- 10:08Melissa Shere Beek: Blondie. Blondie. Okay. So if you had to pick one word that would describe me, what would it be for my personality?
- 10:16Samantha Shere Sharpe: Hat woman. Hat woman.
- 10:18Melissa Shere Beek: Like that. Deep. About what about Jess? One word to describe.
- 10:23Samantha Shere Sharpe: Messy Jesse.
- 10:24Jessica Shere Coggins: I have I thought wild. Wild. Wild?
- 10:27Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. You are. I you know, if we were going for Muppets, Sam would be the lady in the band with, like, you know, she's so cool and blonde and, like, spacey. And and then She'd be you'd be she'd animal. Animal.
- 10:41Animal. Yeah. You'd be animal.
- 10:42Jessica Shere Coggins: What would you be? The Swedish meatball?
- 10:44Melissa Shere Beek: No. I'm either no. No. I'm between two.
- 10:51Samantha Shere Sharpe: She's I'm already between telling us what she is.
- 10:52Melissa Shere Beek: You're not telling? Grover or Kermit? I'm kind of between No. Kermit.
- 10:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: You Loved Kermit.
- 10:58Melissa Shere Beek: I always Loved Kermit because I love frogs and I love green, but I'm like that nerdy Grover guy also.
- 11:04Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. But Kermit's really dorky too.
- 11:06Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, yeah. Okay. So dork is the word we're going
- 11:08Jessica Shere Coggins: for for me. No.
- 11:09Melissa Shere Beek: I I own it.
- 11:11Jessica Shere Coggins: No. You're so not a dork. I need to find a word for nerdy dork. Oh, and but not in your appearance.
- 11:17Melissa Shere Beek: I'm not talking about appearance. I'm talking about personality.
- 11:19Jessica Shere Coggins: What's the word like like when you can you can step out of a situation?
- 11:26Melissa Shere Beek: Objective.
- 11:27Jessica Shere Coggins: Objective. I'll say your objective.
- 11:30Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. I see that.
- 11:32Jessica Shere Coggins: Samantha
- 11:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: Be nice.
- 11:34Jessica Shere Coggins: Sensitive.
- 11:35Samantha Shere Sharpe: I'm extremely sensitive.
- 11:36Jessica Shere Coggins: Over sensitive.
- 11:37Melissa Shere Beek: I think
- 11:38Samantha Shere Sharpe: that's the good one.
- 11:38I think I would say that.
- 11:39I have
- 11:39a hard time. I even had this conversation with Mason. I have a hard time letting shit go. And like, I need to work on that.
- 11:47Jessica Shere Coggins: You do. It's gonna bog you down.
- 11:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: Need to work on that.
- 11:50Jessica Shere Coggins: But I have that opposite. And I wish I had not so much of it.
- 11:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. I let I
- 11:55Melissa Shere Beek: let go. Yeah.
- 11:56Jessica Shere Coggins: I let go too much. I think sometimes.
- 11:59Samantha Shere Sharpe: I I gotta let, like, four something happened four years ago. I gotta let it go. I'm too sent way too sensitive. Like, I need to let things roll off my shoulders and laugh.
- 12:10Jessica Shere Coggins: Or you just need to shake it off quicker.
- 12:12Samantha Shere Sharpe: I do. Yeah. I don't.
- 12:13Jessica Shere Coggins: I don't want it to get you all bogged down. It does.
- 12:16Samantha Shere Sharpe: Right. And then I'm pissed at myself later because I ruined the moment.
- 12:20Jessica Shere Coggins: Wow. Yeah. You get hard on yourself. Yeah. You get very hard on yourself.
- 12:23Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I think you both are hard on yourselves. I think
- 12:27Jessica Shere Coggins: I'm hard on myself for a little and then the fleeting moment kinda just goes and I don't know.
- 12:34Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Okay.
- 12:36Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't think I answered your question, but, again
- 12:39Melissa Shere Beek: No. You did. About personalities, about each one of our personalities.
- 12:42Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. Well, Muppets.
- 12:43Melissa Shere Beek: Well, Jessica's well, okay. The Muppets was you're in that the doctor toothed band or whatever it is. You're the blonde in the band, and you're animal.
- 12:51Samantha Shere Sharpe: Has she even opened her eyes? I don't think she opens her eyes.
- 12:54Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh my god. She's High all
- 12:55the time.
- 12:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, is
- 12:56that what it is? I think she
- 12:58Melissa Shere Beek: might be. Okay. I don't mean it from that perspective. I just meant, like, you're, like, that groovy little blonde chick.
- 13:03Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. Yeah. She's, like, in the seventies. Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:06Yeah.
- 13:06Melissa Shere Beek: The groovy little blonde chick.
- 13:07Jessica Shere Coggins: Her eyes are very swollen, I think. I remember.
- 13:09Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't think they're swollen. I think they're closed. Very dreamy. That's me.
- 13:15Melissa Shere Beek: Yes. Yes. Okay. That's it.
- 13:16Samantha Shere Sharpe: Just go say she's high. I say she's dreamy.
- 13:19Melissa Shere Beek: Well, I mean, I'm sure she is.
- 13:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. I could see her being high, but it's if it's me, I say dreamy.
- 13:25Melissa Shere Beek: No. Yeah. You're dreamy. Dreamy. Okay.
- 13:29If God forbid
- 13:30Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh, no. I don't like these.
- 13:32Melissa Shere Beek: It's fine. I forgot everything. If yeah. Poo poo poo. If God forbid I forgot everything, what would be the first thing that you would tell me about me?
- 13:39And this goes for all of us. So, like
- 13:41Samantha Shere Sharpe: Wear sunscreen.
- 13:43Jessica Shere Coggins: That's a good one. That's a good one. The hat wasn't enough?
- 13:48Samantha Shere Sharpe: I really couldn't tell you to wear
- 13:49a hat,
- 13:50but I
- 13:50Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. What would you tell Jess?
- 13:53Samantha Shere Sharpe: You got three kids?
- 13:58Jessica Shere Coggins: Go get your kids. Go find them. They're somewhere.
- 14:02Melissa Shere Beek: I would tell Sam, go ask your husband.
- 14:04Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, okay.
- 14:05Jessica Shere Coggins: That's a good one. Right?
- 14:06Melissa Shere Beek: Go ask your husband.
- 14:08Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh, god.
- 14:08Melissa Shere Beek: What would I tell Jess? Where would I begin with you?
- 14:10Jessica Shere Coggins: I know.
- 14:11Melissa Shere Beek: I don't know what to say to you first. Well, I don't even know the question. First thing I would say
- 14:15Samantha Shere Sharpe: was toilet?
- 14:15Melissa Shere Beek: No. No. No. I would say it's okay. You're gonna be it's okay.
- 14:18You're gonna be okay. That would be, like, the first thing I would say to you.
- 14:21Jessica Shere Coggins: That's nice to know.
- 14:22Samantha Shere Sharpe: That's a good one.
- 14:23Melissa Shere Beek: Right? It's okay. You're gonna be okay. And Sam, I would say, go ask your husband.
- 14:27Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. That's a good one.
- 14:28Samantha Shere Sharpe: That's a good one for Jess. Oh. Oh, she's crying.
- 14:32Jessica Shere Coggins: I just wish I knew that a long time ago.
- 14:35Melissa Shere Beek: But you know now. Hi. You know now.
- 14:39Samantha Shere Sharpe: You wouldn't you weren't willing to listen a long time ago.
- 14:42Jessica Shere Coggins: No. I listen, you guys.
- 14:43Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. It's different listening. There's a difference between hearing and listening.
- 14:47Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:49Jessica Shere Coggins: I don't know.
- 14:50Melissa Shere Beek: I think you process it now, and I think you know now, and I think experience taught you that. And that's a really great thing going forward.
- 14:58Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. But I still you know, you still live life with a hiccup.
- 15:03Melissa Shere Beek: Everybody has
- 15:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: We all a have hiccups.
- 15:05Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. But you carry it with you.
- 15:08Samantha Shere Sharpe: Well
- 15:09Jessica Shere Coggins: Well, I carry mine.
- 15:10Samantha Shere Sharpe: Your hiccup is a hiccup that keeps hiccuping.
- 15:14Jessica Shere Coggins: Like a speed bump. Several of them.
- 15:16Melissa Shere Beek: But we could send mom with her car to run over it.
- 15:19Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. True.
- 15:21Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. Favorite memory of us growing up?
- 15:26Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, jeez.
- 15:27Jessica Shere Coggins: I I don't have, like, a vivid vivid memory, but I just remember us hanging out in the hallway in the in the hurricane.
- 15:35Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. Oh. When Sissie was pregnant?
- 15:37Melissa Shere Beek: No. No. No. I wasn't pregnant. The hurricane Andrew.
- 15:40Jessica Shere Coggins: I just remember us all being Not married. And like laughing. Yeah. That's what you're
- 15:43Melissa Shere Beek: talking about in hurricane Andrew.
- 15:44Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. I just remember us being in that hallway laughing.
- 15:47Samantha Shere Sharpe: But you were married. Oh, you weren't
- 15:49Melissa Shere Beek: we No. We got engaged like two months after that. Yeah. I just
- 15:53Jessica Shere Coggins: That's not a great memory, but Doug was with us.
- 15:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. I remember Doug We were
- 15:57Melissa Shere Beek: all along the way. Doug with Doug was under the under those glass shelves of those freaky dolls
- 16:02Jessica Shere Coggins: And I was started to sing.
- 16:04Samantha Shere Sharpe: Remember sitting in the hallway. I remember when the your ceiling fell.
- 16:07Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. Daddy went in. And daddy went I remember listening to Toad the Wet Sprockets on the boombox in the kitchen while we were cleaning up. I remember that.
- 16:14Samantha Shere Sharpe: Toad the Wet Sprocket.
- 16:17Jessica Shere Coggins: But that's not my only memory memory.
- 16:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: I mean, I feel like my memories are all picture based, like photographs.
- 16:24Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, I get that.
- 16:25Samantha Shere Sharpe: Like I still think of the photos. The image isn't printed. Like us at Disney with Pluto, you know, like we're all wearing matching outfits from Palm.
- 16:34Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, god. We wore matching outfits except I was 15 and you guys
- 16:38Samantha Shere Sharpe: We were were like company called remember. Palm I Palm Produce I forget. Or something.
- 16:42Jessica Shere Coggins: I don't Palm Produce is the place I right
- 16:45Samantha Shere Sharpe: was gonna say it's Palm Point, but that's not Palm. I I guess it's that.
- 16:50Jessica Shere Coggins: I don't know. It's every it's every time we're together. It's like a new memory. I don't know. God.
- 16:55I don't have like a I
- 16:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: feel like my memories are like picture based. Only from seeing birds.
- 17:00Jessica Shere Coggins: I could see that. Excuse me. Comes happening.
- 17:07Samantha Shere Sharpe: It comes happening.
- 17:08Jessica Shere Coggins: It wasn't Okay. Keep going.
- 17:09Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. Keep going. Something that annoys you about each of us.
- 17:14Samantha Shere Sharpe: Jessica not answering the phone.
- 17:15Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I'm gonna go with that one for
- 17:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: you feel like I need a buzzer. I wanna be the first to answer. Just
- 17:21Jessica Shere Coggins: like it's it's like a Ding. Ding. Like a game show.
- 17:25Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. I feel like that. I feel like, okay, I'm gonna be the first. Jessica not answering the phone. But I probably you all get mad that I don't text.
- 17:32I hate texting. I was just gonna tell you, just text me.
- 17:34Jessica Shere Coggins: It's important.
- 17:34Samantha Shere Sharpe: Don't know. But
- 17:35Melissa Shere Beek: I hate texting.
- 17:36Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh my god, you guys. Come on.
- 17:37Samantha Shere Sharpe: Like, you relate. I hate texting. Who wants to pick up the phone? I was nervous to call you.
- 17:41Melissa Shere Beek: I'm on the phone. I don't like the text.
- 17:42Samantha Shere Sharpe: And you relate? Because he kept saying, yeah. Call her. Call her. I'm like, I'm too scared to call her.
- 17:47Jessica Shere Coggins: Why?
- 17:47Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't know. Is that scary?
- 17:49Jessica Shere Coggins: Not know, it's I scary?
- 17:52Samantha Shere Sharpe: Hello. I
- 17:52Melissa Shere Beek: I'm choking on licorice as she gets.
- 17:54Jessica Shere Coggins: Am I scary?
- 17:55Samantha Shere Sharpe: Sometimes you can be.
- 17:56Melissa Shere Beek: No. Like, you came in hot.
- 17:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah.
- 17:58Melissa Shere Beek: Because you were you said you were crabby today, which I understand.
- 18:00Jessica Shere Coggins: I warned you. Yeah.
- 18:02Melissa Shere Beek: But then we did the we did the beek beat with some pump up music, and and got you in a good mood.
- 18:06Samantha Shere Sharpe: Really good.
- 18:07Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. That's why I always do the beek beat.
- 18:09Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. Being Wait. What one word would I describe, sis? What was the question? I really
- 18:14Jessica Shere Coggins: fucking repeat the question? I we just I back.
- 18:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: On my button here.
- 18:18Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. It's her highlights.
- 18:22Melissa Shere Beek: No. I was just Oh. Something that annoys you about us.
- 18:25Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, something that annoys me. You?
- 18:28Melissa Shere Beek: Each one of to the other.
- 18:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: I'll say something about you. Don't be mad.
- 18:31Melissa Shere Beek: I won't be mad. I like honesty.
- 18:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: If I don't answer, you call again, like, a minute later.
- 18:37Jessica Shere Coggins: How me? You could do that, probably.
- 18:39Melissa Shere Beek: I could do that. But it also might be that I think that the the cellular service in my house went out and disconnected disconnected my my phones. Phones. But I know that if I move from room to room, sometimes my service goes out and, like, the call drops.
- 18:50Samantha Shere Sharpe: Because you don't have an iPhone.
- 18:52Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I'm old school.
- 18:53Jessica Shere Coggins: My answer. Annoys me about you.
- 18:55Samantha Shere Sharpe: Mhmm. Who's you?
- 18:56Jessica Shere Coggins: Sissie. Okay. I think this is for me personally.
- 19:04Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah.
- 19:06Jessica Shere Coggins: I think when we don't agree on a story per se when we're talking on the phone
- 19:11Melissa Shere Beek: Uh-huh. You mean like a story from our past?
- 19:14Jessica Shere Coggins: Or just any A story.
- 19:15Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. I
- 19:16Jessica Shere Coggins: feel like you don't hear me out all the way, like you interject, but I gotta get the story through. And then if we have different opinions on it, I feel like it's hard to prove my opinion to you. Oh, okay. But not in a bad way.
- 19:33Melissa Shere Beek: No. I get what you're saying.
- 19:34Jessica Shere Coggins: You know what I mean? Yeah. But I don't feel like you're bossy. I don't feel like you overstep. I don't know if it's me and I'm not realizing, maybe you're right in the conversation, so I'm still trying to prove myself even though I think your answer fits Right.
- 19:48The story better. Do you know what I'm saying?
- 19:49Melissa Shere Beek: I get your signal. No. I don't I don't have a problem understanding your point of view. Right. Totally understand your point of view.
- 19:55I'm I'm sorry if you feel that No.
- 19:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. I'm not getting it. A bad thing.
- 19:58Melissa Shere Beek: No. No. No. I appreciate that.
- 20:00Jessica Shere Coggins: Also I the good thing about you that I do love is your words are very succinct and to the point, and and and they relate to the subject. I tend to skirt around and go over, so maybe it's my fault on not being clear enough. Okay. Which it could be too.
- 20:18Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. Yeah. No. I understand your point of view.
- 20:20Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. Yeah. Because I also think if anyone you would understand it too.
- 20:24Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, yeah.
- 20:24Jessica Shere Coggins: Because I can talk in weird ways and you still get it.
- 20:26Melissa Shere Beek: Well, conversations with you include 10 other people. Right. That's the thing. So, you'll be on the phone, and one kid will come in, and then another kid will come in, and then you're driving through a drive through and you're ordering like, I'm gonna take a latte. Or wait, hold on.
- 20:41And then, oh, you ran into somebody in the hallway, and so like
- 20:44Jessica Shere Coggins: I would never be able to have a conversation with myself. Like, it's so frustrating to me that I just couldn't I wouldn't I would hang up the phone.
- 20:51Melissa Shere Beek: No. Like, I couldn't be friends with Yeah. But I Because it's you.
- 20:55Jessica Shere Coggins: I know. But it's so annoying. But it's never like one I'm I'm in the bathroom
- 21:02Melissa Shere Beek: or No. They find you there too. Yeah. Somebody will call you while I'm already on the phone with you in
- 21:06Jessica Shere Coggins: the like they're in school.
- 21:07Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:08Jessica Shere Coggins: I know.
- 21:08Melissa Shere Beek: I get it. You? Sam you. Sam you.
- 21:19Jessica Shere Coggins: Not it doesn't annoy me or anything.
- 21:22Samantha Shere Sharpe: I know what you're gonna say.
- 21:23Jessica Shere Coggins: No. I don't know if you are.
- 21:25Samantha Shere Sharpe: That I always go to Mason for advice.
- 21:27Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, no.
- 21:27Jessica Shere Coggins: I think that's one of the best things that you and Mason I always love that you two are a unit. I think it's amazing. Go Maiming. You I've always said it. The two of you work as a unit together.
- 21:38Samantha Shere Sharpe: And it's really annoying. Because I always like I think it's so sit there and go ask him.
- 21:43Jessica Shere Coggins: No. I think it's so
- 21:44nice that you have
- 21:45it because you work together as a team.
- 21:47Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't know if we work together. Just not sure.
- 21:49Melissa Shere Beek: She beats Him into submission.
- 21:51Samantha Shere Sharpe: When I see
- 21:52Jessica Shere Coggins: That's But when
- 21:53Samantha Shere Sharpe: I see you on
- 21:54Jessica Shere Coggins: trips and stuff, you guys work together. Like, it's a team effort, and I've always admired that. I I guess maybe it's a sensitivity thing. Wish you weren't you wouldn't get
- 22:08Samantha Shere Sharpe: So upset about things.
- 22:09Jessica Shere Coggins: So upset or sad about things. Because I know that sadness, like, lasts with you for, like, it's not an hour. It's like a day or two or more. I wish you wouldn't get so upset, because you're a great mom and you're a great person,
- 22:23Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. And should see
- 22:24Jessica Shere Coggins: But I do. Don't want you to get bogged down by all that Because when you think about it, you deal with a lot. Like, there's a lot that you deal with. All three of your kids are way different, and you deal with a lot constantly. And I wish you you felt kind of prouder about yourself.
- 22:41Yeah. Very good,
- 22:44Melissa Shere Beek: That's good. Thanks. I like that. Yeah. Well said.
- 22:46Jessica Shere Coggins: Okay. Yeah. Thanks.
- 22:48Samantha Shere Sharpe: That was very therapeutic.
- 22:49Jessica Shere Coggins: And I and I also don't want you to think, I also feel like not as much now.
- 22:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: It's getting watery,
- 22:55Jessica Shere Coggins: I think. No. Because I feel like you always felt like left out, but you were never left out.
- 22:59Melissa Shere Beek: No. Is that a
- 22:59Samantha Shere Sharpe: mental thing? There was a time where I thought the two of you were Right.
- 23:02Jessica Shere Coggins: And it wasn't like that.
- 23:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: Every single day, and I was like
- 23:05Melissa Shere Beek: She doesn't call back.
- 23:06Samantha Shere Sharpe: Shit here.
- 23:06Jessica Shere Coggins: I don't call back. That's like after the tenth time ever calling. I finally, like, what the hell do you want? No. I'm just kidding.
- 23:13Kidding. I I
- 23:14Samantha Shere Sharpe: do have a question, and I don't mean to leave Jess out of this.
- 23:16No. Go. Sissie
- 23:18Melissa Shere Beek: Yesy.
- 23:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: Because you
- 23:19have two daughters, I have two daughters. What's the biggest advice that you would give for raising girls to be so close?
- 23:31Melissa Shere Beek: I think that's a great question. My girls are very close.
- 23:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. And I don't know if it's something that happens when they're older. Because my kids I've always told them you gotta be close, but it it waxes and it wanes. For example,
- 23:43Melissa Shere Beek: like flow to relationship. Yeah.
- 23:45Samantha Shere Sharpe: They hate each other. But, like, this weekend is parents weekend, and Bria's not coming. So now Stella doesn't want anybody coming because her sister can't be there. So, like, now it's like her sister's her parents.
- 23:54Jessica Shere Coggins: One different thing that I think of dynamic is also different because it's just her two girls.
- 23:59Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. Well, we forget about it, you know.
- 24:01Melissa Shere Beek: No. No. No. You forget it. You asked the question about Like, sisters.
- 24:04Boys.
- 24:04Jessica Shere Coggins: Like, it's different. There's not another one in So,
- 24:08Samantha Shere Sharpe: like, what point
- 24:10Melissa Shere Beek: I think, first of all
- 24:11Jessica Shere Coggins: I think you did a great job on your girl.
- 24:12Melissa Shere Beek: Thank you. Thank you. I think I got lucky. I got great girls. But, there's a couple things I learned, and one of my questions was, you know, what surprised you, what you learned from motherhood.
- 24:22So I'm glad we're on this. Listening is the most important thing that I learned to do instead of trying to be a problem solver. Because as mom, you wanna go in and you wanna, like, help them with everything. And sometimes they just wanna come in and vent. And then the other thing that I think made them close is, well, two things.
- 24:45All the secret shit that they did that they didn't tell me about.
- 24:49Jessica Shere Coggins: I like that. They did that.
- 24:50Melissa Shere Beek: Close in age. So they had each other's back, and they covered for each other. But, also, let them work it out. Let them work it out when they have an argument or a fight, because you getting involved as a parent doesn't really do shit, because you don't understand the nuances, and they have to find their own words and their ways to each other. Yeah.
- 25:13So I think that's what I learned from them, really.
- 25:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: Do they have moments where they fight now at this age?
- 25:19Melissa Shere Beek: I don't think so. I don't think so. But, I mean, again, they're way older than your girls are. But I'm I'm sure that they had, like, small tiffs. I mean, there was a shirt that was in question for a while with one of them, and it kept ending up in somebody else's closet, and and who did it belong to.
- 25:34Jessica Shere Coggins: But I don't think But that's not bad.
- 25:36Melissa Shere Beek: That it was never they never they never had a major fight. Thank God.
- 25:39Jessica Shere Coggins: You gave them a lot of confidence, which I think is nice.
- 25:42Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. Yeah. Thank you. I appreciate that.
- 25:44Jessica Shere Coggins: No. I think I tried have to a ton of confidence.
- 25:47Melissa Shere Beek: I think you
- 25:48both have amazing kids. And I think individually, they really rock themselves individually, not just what you did to support them, but I think they really came out and and were fabulous.
- 25:58Samantha Shere Sharpe: It is the hardest fucking job in the world. I can't even tell you.
- 26:03Melissa Shere Beek: So that was the question, like, what was what surprised you about motherhood? That's that was my next question.
- 26:09Jessica Shere Coggins: I I think it's I mean, listen. For me, going to Zero To one was the worst.
- 26:17Melissa Shere Beek: What? I didn't hear you.
- 26:19Jessica Shere Coggins: Going from zero kids to one
- 26:20Melissa Shere Beek: kids was the worst. To one.
- 26:21Jessica Shere Coggins: Uh-huh. I think what surprised me is I think what surprised me more is the the time. The time and and the mental capacity it takes to
- 26:37Melissa Shere Beek: raise be involved in raising a child.
- 26:41Jessica Shere Coggins: It's a lot. Oh, it's 20 mentally, it's a lot too. It's not just physically.
- 26:45Melissa Shere Beek: There's no off ramp. There's no break.
- 26:47Jessica Shere Coggins: No. It's all day. Yeah.
- 26:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: I have three
- 26:49Jessica Shere Coggins: different And I worry a lot, so I think that's what makes me worse.
- 26:53Melissa Shere Beek: Well, how could you not?
- 26:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: I have three totally different children. So what I took for one, I can't do for the other.
- 26:58Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I mean,
- 27:00Samantha Shere Sharpe: it's just the hardest. It's a lot of times of just biting your tongue and not responding back
- 27:08Melissa Shere Beek: because Listening.
- 27:09Samantha Shere Sharpe: Not being mama bear, but I had to be mama bear for one kid. But I'm not a mama bear for the other kid.
- 27:17Melissa Shere Beek: It's But you know you've you've listened to your kids, you know when you need to jump in and when you don't need to jump in.
- 27:22Samantha Shere Sharpe: I try. That's hard. It's just a hard and I think I remember and and my mother-in-law tells me, the moment I gave birth to Aidan, I said to her, and I looked at her, I said, when do you ever stop worrying? And she said, never. Yeah.
- 27:36That has been the thing. You never stop worrying.
- 27:40Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I think that's the one thing I do appreciate about technology and and and having a phone.
- 27:45Samantha Shere Sharpe: Like it, but I don't like it.
- 27:46Melissa Shere Beek: I like it because we can stay in contact.
- 27:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. Yes. But, like, to know, like, they don't go home till 3AM. But it's really 6AM my time, but 3AM Arizona time, like, I worry. I don't worry so much anymore.
- 28:03It was definitely first year that I worried about her.
- 28:06Jessica Shere Coggins: That's when you go West Of The Mississippi.
- 28:08Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't care.
- 28:10Melissa Shere Beek: So as as we get older She did. I did. I always research. Yes. She did.
- 28:16I always research. Okay. So I had, like, three questions. I'm not sure which I'm gonna do it in this order. Are we stronger in our relationships because we came from a strong matriarchy?
- 28:27Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. No? I don't know. I feel like we're just strong because we are strong.
- 28:32Melissa Shere Beek: I think it's by choice. Okay. I don't know.
- 28:34Samantha Shere Sharpe: I think we had to be strong at the moments where we definitely had to be strong.
- 28:38Jessica Shere Coggins: Okay.
- 28:39Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't think it had anything to do with me. It had to be like, we need to
- 28:43Melissa Shere Beek: Rally the troops.
- 28:44Samantha Shere Sharpe: Rally, like Yeah. Put put our feet forward, build this.
- 28:47Jessica Shere Coggins: I definitely also think it's how we were raised.
- 28:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: There are moments where I remember you and I were like, this is you're not passing this line. Like, you we are your barricade. Yeah. We are your wall. No one's gonna force us down and just we will be there for you when you need us, but this is where we stand.
- 29:05And we were very, very honest and blunt many times.
- 29:09Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Supportive for each other.
- 29:10Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't think that would anything to do with anybody. This was like, we are Our choice. This is we're putting our armor on, and we need to protect her right now. That's it.
- 29:19Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I think so. I think so.
- 29:21Samantha Shere Sharpe: There were I I totally remember that moment so strong where it's like yeah. And then there's moments where we cave, where it's like, it didn't matter if you know? I don't know.
- 29:32Melissa Shere Beek: Well, I think flexibility with each other.
- 29:35Jessica Shere Coggins: I think it's also by choice. You wanna make an effort, or you don't wanna make an effort. Yeah. I mean, you can be the best of sisters and not make an effort to really like each other.
- 29:42Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. That's true.
- 29:43Samantha Shere Sharpe: I hate you today.
- 29:44Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. No. We love each other.
- 29:47Samantha Shere Sharpe: You didn't hear me.
- 29:48Jessica Shere Coggins: I did. I'm sitting right here.
- 29:52Samantha Shere Sharpe: Chose to ignore it. I did. I thought I was talking. I was
- 29:55Jessica Shere Coggins: mindful in that moment.
- 29:57Melissa Shere Beek: I'm trying to tell I was gonna leave this for the last one, but I'll do it now, because we're on legacy and history and matriarchy. What do you think our legacy will be as we get older?
- 30:09Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, shit.
- 30:09Jessica Shere Coggins: I can't think that. I can't. I'll get too emotional. Sorry.
- 30:13Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, okay. I got it.
- 30:16Samantha Shere Sharpe: I just want my kids to be proud of the mom that I have and will be, like, when they become a mom, be like, oh, this is what my mother did. Like,
- 30:29Melissa Shere Beek: that's
- 30:30Samantha Shere Sharpe: what
- 30:30Melissa Shere Beek: I I
- 30:31Samantha Shere Sharpe: want them to be Call me me, I want them to be different, but I want them to be like, I'm doing this because this is something my mom did.
- 30:40Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. So incorporate the things that were meaningful to them that you shared with them that they can do.
- 30:45Samantha Shere Sharpe: Like, I want and it's weird because I feel like I have this conversation often. But, like, I wanted my journey as a mother to be different than the one that I had.
- 30:59Melissa Shere Beek: Got it. Oh, for your oh, yeah. Jess is crying. So Stephen's giving us the signal to pass the napkins.
- 31:08Jessica Shere Coggins: Thanks for the help.
- 31:09Melissa Shere Beek: She keeps using her sweater.
- 31:11Samantha Shere Sharpe: Thanks, And I and I don't wanna talk poorly. Yeah. No. But I did go into this mother journey saying I was going to do things differently. Well, I think you have everybody's I hope that I have, and I hope that the changes that I've made have made my kids proud and will want to do the same.
- 31:36Melissa Shere Beek: That's nice.
- 31:37Samantha Shere Sharpe: That's that's kind of like I hope I hope they look back and be like, I had an amazing mom and I'm gonna be a good mom too.
- 31:43Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I like that. I think every child and and one of my questions was gonna be like, what do your kids say is the most annoying thing about you? What if we didn't get there? But I think every child we'll do it after then.
- 31:54I think every child looks at their parent and goes, oh, I'm definitely not doing that. And then they think, oh, okay. Those are some of the things that I am gonna do. So I think they always it gets edited down each generation. Yeah.
- 32:07Probably. But I I like what you said about that, Sam.
- 32:10Samantha Shere Sharpe: I mean, there is one bad thing I did. I mean, I don't wanna get negative, but I have a tendency to run away. I think we've talked about this.
- 32:18Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. We've talked about this.
- 32:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: Mhmm. When I You and I have. When we get when I got upset with my girls and I'd fight, I would run away. Whether it be hiding in the backyard, or I'd take the car and go somewhere.
- 32:30Jessica Shere Coggins: You always take the car.
- 32:31Melissa Shere Beek: Is that to avoid confrontation, or is that to give yourself a beat to calm down? I you know what?
- 32:37Samantha Shere Sharpe: I actually, I don't I think there's a third thing in there.
- 32:40Okay. Attention.
- 32:43Melissa Shere Beek: You wanted attention?
- 32:44Samantha Shere Sharpe: Maybe.
- 32:45Melissa Shere Beek: Mhmm. Like You wanted them to run for
- 32:47Jessica Shere Coggins: run after her. Right.
- 32:48Samantha Shere Sharpe: And so but it's also because that's what happened in our lives.
- 32:53Jessica Shere Coggins: Mhmm.
- 32:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: So I know as it got down to Bria and I was doing it, it made her really, really, really upset. And and Bria talk about stubborn. She's stubborn, but she's also tells you like it is. And she would say, you need to stop doing that. I don't like when you do that.
- 33:11Melissa Shere Beek: No. Good for her for expressing
- 33:12Samantha Shere Sharpe: need stop. And so it was like the light bulb went off in my head, and I'm like, I gotta stop doing this. And I started working on it.
- 33:19Melissa Shere Beek: That's good.
- 33:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: And so, you know
- 33:22Jessica Shere Coggins: You should probably just wanna get out
- 33:23of sight of your question. Yeah. I get it. You don't wanna, like, be in it.
- 33:27Samantha Shere Sharpe: That's one of the things that I've, like I'm I'm mad at myself for doing too often back then, and I'm working on not doing Yeah.
- 33:36Melissa Shere Beek: But you're aware of it and working on it now. So it's amazing.
- 33:38Samantha Shere Sharpe: I hope I didn't to be honest with you, hope I didn't do damage. You know, it's that kind of thing.
- 33:43Melissa Shere Beek: You're talking about it openly with them. So there Yeah. I don't think that's damaged. Listen. If you continue to do the best you can with kids No.
- 33:50Samantha Shere Sharpe: But I feel like those bad moments, they remember so much more than those good moments sometimes.
- 33:55Get nervous.
- 33:56Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I don't think they do. I feel like . You it's like it's like when the kids, you know, God forbid, they're little and they get sick or whatever, and you worry, and we talked about worry and stuff like that.
- 34:07They get over it, and they're totally fine, but you're still traumatized from it. Like, so I think that maybe you're, again, in your head beating yourself up about it, but
- 34:15Samantha Shere Sharpe: Also, I'm sensitive.
- 34:16Melissa Shere Beek: So I remember. Yeah.
- 34:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: This is who I am.
- 34:18Jessica Shere Coggins: But that's Right. But you remember it.
- 34:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: I do.
- 34:20Jessica Shere Coggins: Your kids might not.
- 34:21Samantha Shere Sharpe: I know. But it's see, this is what worries, this is what wanes on me is this this stuff. Which is okay and it's like
- 34:28Melissa Shere Beek: Well, that's normal.
- 34:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: I think we've all Jess and I have talked about changes that you make like when you go to a therapist and things that you need to change in your life and like, this was definitely an moment for me when Brea was like, you got to stop doing that.
- 34:42Melissa Shere Beek: Good for her for expressing that.
- 34:44Samantha Shere Sharpe: Mhmm. And so for me to go, I gotta change this was very important to me. It's hard.
- 34:50Jessica Shere Coggins: It's hard Maybe to you'll give yourself, like, ten, fifteen minutes.
- 34:52Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. You know? I tried that on Saturday.
- 34:54Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, that's Yeah.
- 34:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: Didn't really work.
- 34:57Melissa Shere Beek: That's okay. But you tried.
- 34:59Jessica Shere Coggins: But knew. You tried. Don't know how many other people knew. I mean, you're my sister, so I knew someone was bothering you.
- 35:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, she's also Bria is tough. But She is very. She. Yeah.
- 35:07Melissa Shere Beek: What we okay. So this will be the last question then.
- 35:09Instead of Legacy, because Jessica didn't wanna answer. You didn't want yeah. Okay. She's shaking her head. Okay.
- 35:14Maybe this will be a funny good thing to land on. Oh. What do your kids Uh-huh. Think is the most annoying thing about you?
- 35:20Jessica Shere Coggins: I I actually got in a little thing with Meyer yesterday about this. So I think I'm finding out stuff about myself more so through my kids, not through my actions. He was like, you just blurt out things all the time. He's like, I don't even think you realize you do it. And I don't think I do.
- 35:41Melissa Shere Beek: That's pretty astute.
- 35:42Jessica Shere Coggins: He like yesterday when I dropped him off, I said something and I was like, I I don't know what I said. Was like, bye guys, have a great day. And he looked at me and he's like, we're not even there yet. Like, it's it's I think, you know what it is, and I'm sensitive to this.
- 35:57It's a stream of consciousness that whatever goes on in my head comes out. Mhmm. And Meyer's like, we don't care. We don't care that you like, he said I put a song on. Was like, I love this song.
- 36:09He's like, Michael are in the car and we really don't care. Like he's like, you gotta stop like just talking. Like, and I agree with it. Uh-huh. Like there's some things that I need to be able to say no one else needs to know about this.
- 36:22Melissa Shere Beek: You don't need to make a public service announcement. He means.
- 36:24Jessica Shere Coggins: I can't it's my thought, and then it comes out. Yeah.
- 36:27So I'm oversharing.
- 36:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. I'd say the three things that my kids would say.
- 36:31Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, there's three.
- 36:32Samantha Shere Sharpe: And I'm loving it. Yes. I asked way too many questions. I do. Like, Bria comes home, and I'll be like, I Like think I asked
- 36:40Jessica Shere Coggins: any of us. Oh. Yeah.
- 36:41Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. Too many questions, because like the third question, she's already shut down. She her and Stella say that I'm very lurky. Like, if I look over their shoulders and they're watching a TikTok, I'll be like, who's that?
- 36:52Jessica Shere Coggins: Yes. Or
- 36:52Samantha Shere Sharpe: I call Stella
- 36:54Jessica Shere Coggins: on You
- 36:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: are. Or I call Stella on a TikTok. I'm like, what does this mean?
- 36:57Jessica Shere Coggins: Yes. Yes.
- 36:58Samantha Shere Sharpe: She goes, mom, you need to stop. I'm gonna block you.
- 37:00Jessica Shere Coggins: No. That I don't bother. But you lurk you lurk I
- 37:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: lurk around.
- 37:04Melissa Shere Beek: That's so funny.
- 37:05Samantha Shere Sharpe: What was the third one I thought of? It was something you were saying.
- 37:08Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh, and I can't cook, but I don't care. Oh.
- 37:10Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. My kids think, like, they get worried that, like, I ask a question, but I forgot that I asked the question, so I asked the question again.
- 37:19Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh, I do this
- 37:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: so And they'll be like, mom, are you okay? You just asked that question.
- 37:23Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. Or if it's I'm telling them a story, I told them a story, like, four times prior.
- 37:26Melissa Shere Beek: Do repeat yourself?
- 37:27Samantha Shere Sharpe: I honestly don't remember, and it scares the the shit out
- 37:30Jessica Shere Coggins: of me. I don't remember. I remember.
- 37:31Melissa Shere Beek: I guess I think that nobody was listening, so I had to repeat it.
- 37:34Samantha Shere Sharpe: I don't remember asking. They're like, you just asked that question. Those are the three things. I we should we should bring them on and see.
- 37:40Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, I think that would be really fun.
- 37:41Samantha Shere Sharpe: That would be so good. That would be start
- 37:43Jessica Shere Coggins: with the two girls.
- 37:45Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. And see if
- 37:46Jessica Shere Coggins: would be would be fun. They think.
- 37:48Samantha Shere Sharpe: You have to you have to, like, remember this episode and see if they'll
- 37:52Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. See say they'll stop talking
- 37:54Jessica Shere Coggins: I'm about sure your kids have opinions about you.
- 37:56Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, my kids have lots of opinions about me. I think the first one's gonna they would say is stop trying to problem solve everything. Okay. Like, you know, like, you just you can.
- 38:05Samantha Shere Sharpe: So For who? For them or for other people?
- 38:08Melissa Shere Beek: No. Like, if they come to me with something and they just really wanted to vent, and I'm still trying too.
- 38:12Samantha Shere Sharpe: To Yeah. Oh, they'll
- 38:13Melissa Shere Beek: tell I mean, I I don't problem solve anymore. I bite my tongue and just listen because I've learned they've expressed it, but I would say that they would think that that was most annoying thing.
- 38:22Jessica Shere Coggins: And then, You gotta learn when someone, like, wants to just, like, talk and not hear you.
- 38:27Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, yeah.
- 38:27Jessica Shere Coggins: Of course. Yeah.
- 38:28Melissa Shere Beek: So I think sometimes they call and go vent, and and then they just Yeah. But the other thing too is wait. I just lost it.
- 38:37Jessica Shere Coggins: Oh, this happens to me multiple times a day.
- 38:39Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, no. Was thinking But I will say, I'll jump ahead. I feel like the third, I finally, like, listened. I feel like the first one, I had no idea what I was doing. The second one was like, la dee da.
- 38:48And the third, it's like, okay. I can't do this. I gotta do this. I gotta change this.
- 38:53Jessica Shere Coggins: Well, that's good. You're learning.
- 38:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: I feel like the third, it's like I finally, like, okay. Maybe somebody was right. And I didn't listen to the first two, but I gotta listen to the third.
- 39:01Jessica Shere Coggins: Maybe you should Maybe that's why I listened to Meyer about, like, learning to
- 39:05Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, I know something else that's annoying that I probably do. What? I I'm opposite with Sam. What Sam says, she, like, runs away and needs I need to have closure. Like, I can't let an argument if we have a discussion or something like
- 39:18Jessica Shere Coggins: true, but you do that with a lot.
- 39:20Melissa Shere Beek: I cannot go it will eat me up inside. He does
- 39:23Samantha Shere Sharpe: it a lot. I That's can't why I go back to the call. You call and call.
- 39:27Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. If there's something that I
- 39:28Jessica Shere Coggins: want You'll resolved call back and say it too if you didn't even say it.
- 39:32Melissa Shere Beek: Back and say because I it will not rest with my heart if anybody I love and care about, I've upset in any way. You know, I would never do it intentionally, but if I if if someone's not feeling right about something, it doesn't I don't feel good about something. And so
- 39:48Samantha Shere Sharpe: that has to do with birth order or just personality?
- 39:50Melissa Shere Beek: I don't know. But I will I I need they need to know the people that I love that I love them, and I need I need That's another think a word about you, but I can't think of the word. Yeah. Okay. I just I I wouldn't be able to rest.
- 40:03You know, I can't you can't go to bed upset with anything.
- 40:06Jessica Shere Coggins: I That's what you do in the conversations, I think. Maybe that's what's pinpoint is you keep trying to prove yourself and not prove yourself to me.
- 40:14Samantha Shere Sharpe: She wants to seal something up. She's done.
- 40:16Jessica Shere Coggins: You keep yeah.
- 40:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: Because she She wants to make her point heard.
- 40:18Jessica Shere Coggins: Yes. And you won't stop until you get your point heard. Not in a bad way. Yeah. But you'll then be like, but did you hear when I said this?
- 40:25And then you'll go and say it.
- 40:26Melissa Shere Beek: You know what I say that to you because you're not listening? Or because I Probably. Do I say it to you too, Sam?
- 40:36Jessica Shere Coggins: You know how to work it. With me, you know, like, how to understand. You know how to read me.
- 40:42Samantha Shere Sharpe: Like But I feel like sometimes she talks to you and you don't listen, because she'll call me and, like, I'm trying to tell this to Jess, and I don't think Jess is really getting it.
- 40:50Jessica Shere Coggins: I probably get it. I just probably don't wanna listen to you or do it. Right.
- 40:53Melissa Shere Beek: No. You don't have to do what I say. Yeah. Like, if call me and you go, like, how do I word this, or how do I say this, or how do I do this? And then I tell it to you, and you'd be like, okay, no.
- 41:02And then Well, because yes. And that's okay. You don't have to take my advice. That was just my opinion.
- 41:07Jessica Shere Coggins: That's more, I can say this on here, more with court stuff, I'll say.
- 41:12Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yes. Okay.
- 41:13Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. It's more with court stuff because Mhmm. You say things that that's not how the court system works anymore.
- 41:19Melissa Shere Beek: Got Got it.
- 41:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: That that really Yeah. That gets her. That gets me gone. Come back a couple days later and say it again.
- 41:26Melissa Shere Beek: No problem because they've been thinking about it.
- 41:28Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yes.
- 41:28Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. And it's not closure
- 41:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: for you. It's still going on, and she gets it, but it's not, like, Jessica's the type
- 41:34Melissa Shere Beek: who It's not valid for her situation.
- 41:36Samantha Shere Sharpe: Say, okay, and because she'll just stop the conversation, but her okay to you is, like, shutting you up, and so you haven't expressed yourself. And then she And then I get got stuck in the middle, like, I'm trying to explain this to Jessica and she's just not understanding is can I can you explain it to her better? And then I try to explain to you. Well, I've tried explaining it to her but
- 41:56Melissa Shere Beek: Clearly I’m the problem. No.
- 41:59Jessica Shere Coggins: She's You're not understanding.
- 42:00Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. No. Because I get it. Like, I think that there's also a point where, like, you don't wanna understand because on all
- 42:07I think it's somehow
- 42:08you're paying for a lawyer and you don't care. No. Don't. Yeah. You want her to understand because you want her to have knowledge and not go into it without the knowledge where she's like, I don't care.
- 42:19I just want this over and done with. I'm paying for lawyers. So she has a laissez faire
- 42:24Melissa Shere Beek: Laissez faire?
- 42:24Samantha Shere Sharpe: Feeling. Mhmm. And you're like, but I want her to understand.
- 42:28Melissa Shere Beek: Because I always want her to go into anything with information.
- 42:33Jessica Shere Coggins: Right. But it's different. Not only with the courts. Right. It's different.
- 42:38Melissa Shere Beek: Right. Only because I get it. I don't know the legal aspect of You've
- 42:41Jessica Shere Coggins: got go go gadget here.
- 42:43Samantha Shere Sharpe: Go go
- 42:44Jessica Shere Coggins: go gadget Sam. So she, like, kinda gets it more. I'm not saying you don't, but the court's not your thing.
- 42:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: Carmen Santiago. Yeah. Carmen Santiago is better.
- 42:51Jessica Shere Coggins: Like, it doesn't work like that sometimes, so I feel like I'm trying
- 42:54Melissa Shere Beek: to No. She's more proficient with the legalese than I am. Right. You wanna talk about the body or the brain or surgery or medical It's all you. I can do that.
- 43:02But the legally the legal jargon, that's Sam. And the investigative services is Sam. Love stuff. Sam's like a secret FBI agent.
- 43:09Samantha Shere Sharpe: That stuff.
- 43:10Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Okay. That that let's end on this one last question. Oh. What would be our best professions that you would say we would be great at?
- 43:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, I'd be an FBI agent
- 43:19Jessica Shere Coggins: in a heartbeat. Okay. FBI agent. You know, I don't ever want this job, but I always go back to it like teaching little kids. Yeah.
- 43:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: You have the patience.
- 43:30Melissa Shere Beek: I was just gonna say that but I didn't
- 43:32Samantha Shere Sharpe: say it.
- 43:32Jessica Shere Coggins: You know, I I like I I I
- 43:35Samantha Shere Sharpe: You would clean runny noses?
- 43:37Jessica Shere Coggins: Okay. No.
- 43:37Melissa Shere Beek: Okay.
- 43:38Jessica Shere Coggins: No. Was just have assistant will do Fully potty trained and and no it's not. And they can't be like little where they get sick all the time. Like That's every little or fives or sixes. I don't know why.
- 43:50I never think I would ever work with kids, but I really like it. That's so cool. I like that. I would have never imagined No. For you.
- 43:56Never.
- 43:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: So So go back.
- 43:58Jessica Shere Coggins: Go back. No.
- 43:59Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. Okay.
- 43:59Melissa Shere Beek: It's not too late to start anything. Look what I'm doing.
- 44:02Jessica Shere Coggins: No. I know. But I don't know
- 44:03if teacher would be my thing. I just know if I had little kids, I'd be able to You
- 44:06Samantha Shere Sharpe: have a friend that went back. She told me was not even in this realm of like No. Anything if she
- 44:11Jessica Shere Coggins: I don't know though. Also would be like a lawyer, maybe. Yeah. What would you think I would be?
- 44:16Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, that's a good question.
- 44:17Melissa Shere Beek: I don't know. Sam totally FBI agent
- 44:20Jessica Shere Coggins: like You would be a journalist in a newspaper.
- 44:22Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. I would I wish I
- 44:23Samantha Shere Sharpe: You would be a publisher. A book
- 44:25Melissa Shere Beek: Well, that's it. I have all of my books that I've written, but I have yet to publish them.
- 44:28What would I
- 44:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: love your PR. I feel like you do that.
- 44:32Melissa Shere Beek: Yes. You were such a great PR person. Yes.
- 44:36Samantha Shere Sharpe: I could see you, like, on a red carpet in your It was
- 44:39Jessica Shere Coggins: great. I love
- 44:40Melissa Shere Beek: that entertainment into that.
- 44:41Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. That's the one thing I regret is not having a career to fall back on. I wish I had something that I could just go into, parlay back into, and go into.
- 44:51Samantha Shere Sharpe: I know you keep looking something to do.
- 44:52Jessica Shere Coggins: I do. I need something.
- 44:53Samantha Shere Sharpe: What would you see you see me as
- 44:55Melissa Shere Beek: a Oh, a investigative services area.
- 44:57Jessica Shere Coggins: Uh-huh.
- 44:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: Or a criminologist. Yes. Criminologist. Be a crime scene. I'd be at a crime scene or be an FBI agent.
- 45:03Yeah. Millisecond.
- 45:04Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. So we'll watch for you On ncis
- 45:05Jessica Shere Coggins: Yes. I want to be a doctor, but then I went on rounds with someone, and then I almost threw up. So then I know
- 45:10Samantha Shere Sharpe: I couldn't do it.
- 45:12Melissa Shere Beek: This will be the last one. Promise.
- 45:14Jessica Shere Coggins: It's like you said the other two results one. Okay.
- 45:16Samantha Shere Sharpe: We're getting better. This better be a real good one.
- 45:17Melissa Shere Beek: No. Just one rule you live by.
- 45:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, shit.
- 45:21Melissa Shere Beek: Why do you always say, oh, shit for a good question? I think
- 45:24Jessica Shere Coggins: now it's it's it's not to lie.
- 45:27Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah.
- 45:27Samantha Shere Sharpe: I was gonna say truth. Yeah. Definitely. It's one thing I've instilled in my kids. Just be honest.
- 45:33Honest. Yeah. It's just
- 45:34Jessica Shere Coggins: the best way to go.
- 45:35Melissa Shere Beek: My one rule, that I live by is is gratitude. That's And kindness. Gratitude and kindness. I feel like they go hand in hand, you know, just grateful for the blessings that we have and treating everyone with kindness. That's how I feel.
- 45:49Jessica Shere Coggins: I could work on kindness. I'm gonna be honest. I could. Big time.
- 45:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. You're quick. You're quick. Like, we call we didn't wanna call you today, because I was afraid you were gonna get defensive. Like, I sometimes cut off.
- 46:02Sometimes I get I get worried that am I catching you in a moment where if you're late, you already have your defense mechanism. I don't blame you. Yeah. I don't blame you.
- 46:12Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Yep. But then we put on pump it up, and you got in a good mood. Yeah.
- 46:16Jessica Shere Coggins: No. She
- 46:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: saw us since she got
- 46:18in a
- 46:18Jessica Shere Coggins: good mood. Yeah. Why not pump it up.
- 46:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: I love this. I I I I'm not gonna cry because I feel like she walked in today in a bad mood, and the second she saw us, like
- 46:28Jessica Shere Coggins: It does. It it sunshine.
- 46:30Melissa Shere Beek: It was sunshine for each
- 46:31Jessica Shere Coggins: I'm just imagining, like, not, like, having a sister to, like no offense to people that don't, but, like like, who do you share your deepest, darkest secrets with? Like, who do you call? Like, I don't trust my friends. I I don't. I don't trust my friends at all.
- 46:47Samantha Shere Sharpe: It's not
- 46:48Jessica Shere Coggins: that I love them. I just don't trust them.
- 46:50Samantha Shere Sharpe: It's very hard to know where to start with all of our stories.
- 46:52Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. But I do I do agree. I I bark a lot. I I just bark. I wish I could work on it, but it's hard.
- 47:00Melissa Shere Beek: You are working on it.
- 47:01Jessica Shere Coggins: You are. I just can I but I'm not that kind sometimes to people?
- 47:05Melissa Shere Beek: No. We love you. Thanks.
- 47:07Samantha Shere Sharpe: Well, if they're not sticking around, then they're not meant to be. True. They know you. They know you. You have we all have our good days.
- 47:13We all have our bad days.
- 47:14Jessica Shere Coggins: Right. Just that.
- 47:15Samantha Shere Sharpe: It's though. If they're willing to stick around
- 47:18Melissa Shere Beek: Wisdom from the blonde. And she just got her
- 47:21Samantha Shere Sharpe: hair done today, so it's, like, all pouring hasn't settled in yet.
- 47:25Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. It hasn't
- 47:25Samantha Shere Sharpe: rotten the My god. This is so much fun. I hope honestly, I hope people enjoy this as much as we do.
- 47:33Melissa Shere Beek: I hope so.
- 47:34Jessica Shere Coggins: I don't know.
- 47:34Melissa Shere Beek: I hope so. Well, okay. So Steven said to me, there's an audience for everything. Okay. So, don't worry.
- 47:41I have other people I'm interviewing out there in podcast land.
- 47:44Samantha Shere Sharpe: We're just giving up our slot.
- 47:45Melissa Shere Beek: But this cast of characters will be reoccurring each month.
- 47:49Jessica Shere Coggins: Each month. You heard that again?
- 47:51And I know She makes sure to say that, Sam.
- 47:53Melissa Shere Beek: Well, yeah.
- 47:53Samantha Shere Sharpe: You're the one who wants it more.
- 47:54Jessica Shere Coggins: Right. No. But she keeps on reconfirming to us that it's
- 47:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: each month. Because coming
- 47:58Melissa Shere Beek: why? You keep telling me you're gonna show up every week anyway.
- 48:01Jessica Shere Coggins: I just I I just think we're important.
- 48:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: She I think I think she just doesn't want to miss out on anybody else's conversations.
- 48:08Jessica Shere Coggins: I wanna jump in on it.
- 48:10Melissa Shere Beek: Oh gosh. God. Maybe. We'll see.
- 48:13Samantha Shere Sharpe: Well, I love my sisters, and I'm so lucky to have you guys. You know, you had asked a question. Like, I don't remember memories. Like, there's still six years, four years, but I feel like it's only a year between us. Like, I just Oh, yeah.
- 48:28Melissa Shere Beek: The gap of
- 48:28age Closes
- 48:29Jessica Shere Coggins: Yeah. Don't even think about age,
- 48:30Melissa Shere Beek: I think. I don't think it's affected now. I think it was when we were younger.
- 48:34Samantha Shere Sharpe: And I thank you for doing this because I feel like it really brought us closer.
- 48:37Jessica Shere Coggins: This is very therapeutic for Samantha. Very therapeutic for I love it. Samantha. Love you
