- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Um we're almost semi-regular with our podcasting now.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: We've had huge breaks.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: This has been the most uh ridiculously bad season from us in terms of getting podcasts out.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: But look at us now, you in two weeks.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: We we have a uh special guest joining us.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: Uh we've got um Anna Thoman joining the pod.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: We're gonna discuss some some World Cup draw, uh a little tiny bit of her career, but she's here as a co-host, not a guest.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: Anna, it's a pleasure to have you.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: How are you?
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: I'm very well, thank you.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having me on.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: It's nice to be invited on after how many years of you hosting the pod, even though I live around the corner from you.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I've been threatening to Anna that I would like to have her on, and every time she's like, Yeah, just let me know when.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: And then kind of the sassy message of being like, Oh, finally, yeah, fair enough.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: And you obviously you're here, but in Eindhoven, how are you?
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I'm not in Eindhoven, Phil.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: You stayed at my house for uh two days.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Uh it's in Tilburg, but yeah, I'm in Holland, and I'm good.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Lovely.
- 2:35unknown: Right.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Well did you did your competition start this weekend?
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: The men, the men did, uh the women didn't.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: You're this weekend coming.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we start this weekend with a nice double header, which is fun.
- 2:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we we started and we uh beat Hampstead 4-1 as uh as a starting point in our phase two.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Uh Hamstead's not the chicken place, is it?
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: That's not the chicken place.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: Oxtead is the chicken place.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, oxtead is the chicken place.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: Oxstead do really good post-match chicken.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: By the way, sorry to sorry to get off topic so quick.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: I just found out like when Phil uh visited that like um I genuinely thought for like four for the better of four years, forever how long we've done that this podcast, that aftermatch teas, it's not actually tea.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: I thought you guys were like with like shit together and everyone gets a cup of tea.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And you guys like talk about how the match went, but it's actually food.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: I thought like the food the food was like secondary to everyone having a cup of tea, but it's not it's like generally food.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so yeah, yeah.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: In your in your mind, we're just in some kind of posh room with cups and saucers with an assortment of English breakfast, Earl Grey, you know, green, elong tea options, and we sit there very and and just debrief the game.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, yeah.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Not like a posh room, but I just thought everyone gets like a cup of tea and just talks about automatics.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: I genuinely thought that what you call it teas after.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know why we call it much teas.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Well, tea is probably would you say tea?
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Because we're from a bit further up north, so like dinner at night, we would some sometimes say that's tea.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: So we would say what's for tea, but that would be our dinner.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: Again, just English, English nonsense.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: Although now you've said it, I think it's my dream scenario.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: Spanish and game, go and have a cup and saucer and a biscuit.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: Perfect, right?
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: Good good to get off topic pretty quickly.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: Um so Anna um has been a I I'm just gonna do the standard intro and embarrass you a little bit.
- 4:53SPEAKER_04: Um Anna is uh is obviously joined the pod today.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: I I might get I've got this wrong, but I did my research and you got 173 England and GB caps.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: Does that sound right?
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: I think it sounds about right, yeah.
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: Okay, nice.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: Uh I I not many people have to correct me because I'm using the FAH data stats hub, which is pretty nerdy.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: Um you've won Commonwealth Gold in 2022, Olympic bronze 2021.
- 5:17SPEAKER_04: You've been like a key part of the Great Britain and England team since 2017.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: And more importantly than anything, you are a long-term Y1 athlete, one of the first to join the band, one of the good people.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: We we, you know, it's gone a bit downhill since them early days.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: Actually, no, because me, you, and Brendan joined.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: But and now Yupe's, you know, yeah.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: Here's just looking at me puzzled.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: But yeah, it's a it's a pleasure to have you on.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: Like we say, we're not gonna fire too many questions at you um unless you gets bored, and then he will.
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: Um, but we're gonna put you on the spot to start with because the world cup draw was this uh this past week where the 16 teams were split into four pools of four.
- 6:03SPEAKER_04: And you there's a brand new format for the world cup.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: You is gonna um explain the new format and then we can get into some of the some of the stuff.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sure.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: How did I go on the weekend, Phil?
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I went quite well.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Uh uh.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: We're not doing that anymore.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: You could you can do it, yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 6:25SPEAKER_04: How did Arany Road get on at the weekend?
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: You you had a big game against Amsterdam.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: We're not doing it anymore.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: I just thought I had a really like this was like the one game that was really actually worth talking about, and now you're gonna skip it.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: No, tell us, come on, come on.
- 6:41SPEAKER_04: We're both really interested.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'll tell it.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Uh no, so uh because the list the I know the list, I get like hundreds of messages every week.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Hey you, how did you go in the weekend?
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: You didn't tell on the pot, and then I have to go all over that again.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: I don't, but um, so we uh played Amsterdam and we um uh our uh our um our man main man stroon walker was back, uh scored two goals.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: We were three-nil up, the sun was shining, life was good.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Uh going to the final quarter.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: And did did you ever what that's what I wanted to talk about mainly?
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Did you ever like um that you were in a game and you were up, like 3-0, 2-0, 4-0, and that the coach is like hammering, hey guys, game's not finished.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Uh there are a bunch of snakes, then we'll get back in the game.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Just focus up, don't lose, and that you're listening, and you're like, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, I know the game's not over.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: But deep down you think this motherfucker's over.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't over.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Did you guys ever experience that?
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Like you must have had that feel because you never like I had this very recently actually in China in the pro league.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: We were three, were we two-nil up or three nil up, and they scored three goals in seven minutes.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was kinda exactly what happened to Willas.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: And you kind of because because the coach says it so much, the moment they scored a three-one, you're already you're like deep down, you're like, oh shit, oh shit.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: She warned us, and then the second falls, you're thinking, oh shit.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: She did say this, and then it was 3-3.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Uh the Cassim brothers fucked us over again, and we uh we drew.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: But it was a good game.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, apparently, apparently, I've heard on the grapevine that that Arthur De Schluver had a should have had a dark orange, potentially red card.
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: Is that is that true or not?
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: No.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm very uh uh unbiased is the word.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Not I'm not biased, but I'm biased.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: I'm not biased.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, unbiased.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Um, he should the first yellow he got should have never been a yellow.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: On the other hand, when he did have a yellow in his pocket already, he made a diving tackle towards the shins of a player of Amsterdam.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: The guy fell down, everyone kind of stopped, and everyone knew, ah, he's he's he's off, he's gone.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Um, but the ref said, ah, it was not intentional.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: I think if it was anyone else on that pitch, he would have gotten a red.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: And I think they were like kind of uh which is always a good thing to do as a referee is that you like compensate the mistake you made earlier, um making it up in the in the next couple minutes.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what happened.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: He was like, don't think the first one was yellow.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Let's not give him a red.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what happened.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: So he should have been off with the red, but it's like the first yellow wasn't the yellow.
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: It's yeah, excellent here.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: I also feel like I've got to be honest here, I I wasn't gonna do this, but I'm gonna do it.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: We had training two nights ago, and I had a um a brief rage quit of a session.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Not like that.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: No, but it would be actually my first time in a long time that I've done a done a uh meaning.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, like when you do it off a PlayStation halfway through the FIFA game.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, and I and I just want to, you know, I'm sure there's thousands of these happening across the across the weeks over over hockey stuff, but it's my first one in a while.
- 10:13SPEAKER_04: So I had a full like uh we were playing seven on like three seven aside a seven aside tournament where you've got three teams and you're like rotating round.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: And um I still I still don't know if I've forgiven them.
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: I've got training tonight, so we'll see how this goes.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: But um the Carson brothers, shout out because they all listen and uh and and I do love them really.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: Um Ed and Tom, Tom being the founder of Y1 were against uh against my team in the first minute of the game.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: Ed, complete accident, but he loves to get stuck in.
- 10:44SPEAKER_04: For some reason, it sticks above his head and um and he like donks me just a little on the head.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: So me being almost on not really on the edge, but almost I was like, the fuck are you doing?
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: Like pretty angry.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: Like, start to go.
- 10:59SPEAKER_04: Stanford's on their team, he like calls over like 50 yards away, giving me some shit.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: I was like, right, it seems unfair that I've just got donked on the head and someone's giving me some shit.
- 11:07SPEAKER_04: Okay, that's a little bit angrier.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: Um, three minutes later, like I get the ball in a zone, like Tom runs in as fast as he can.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: I kind of turn into him and he just elbows me square in the head.
- 11:20SPEAKER_04: So then the ball's just there, smash the ball away as hard as I can, walk to the sideline, throw my gum shield, it goes towards uh towards an assistant coach, then stick's gone.
- 11:32SPEAKER_04: I was like, oh no, and then I sit on this little side pitch like a loser, and I was like, I'm not that angry anymore.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Did you did you throw your stick?
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: Yes, and it got stuck in the fence.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, lovely.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: And and then I was really concerned for a while that I couldn't that I wasn't gonna be able to get it down.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Um kind of backfired then, don't you?
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, really backfired, and then I have to like because like three minutes later, I'm like, Oh, I'm not that angry, you know, it's it it wasn't great.
- 12:02SPEAKER_04: I still think they're both wankers, but like ah yeah, but you gotta you gotta commit then you gotta get it.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I should so so so if I had had my time again, bag on my back, leave the stick, walk to my car, drive home.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: I think if I'd had my time again, instead, I like sheepishly like get my stick down, tell between your legs, tell between my legs and go and do the shooting.
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: Did the stick did the stick break?
- 12:23SPEAKER_04: No, no, because it's like uh it wasn't a real fence, it's like a stringy fence.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, but you know, I thought you also because it's a Y1 stick, yeah, they don't break, they're top quality.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Hey, this were we brought to my today?
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: Hey, we are brought to you by Y1, and it wasn't stick I threw into the fence, and it still worked afterwards.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: So, you guys, if any of you guys are slightly angry like me, get yourself a Y1 stick.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we played with the same stick for like eight years now, it does not break.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Like, get yourself one.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: Also, well, I mean, we're just going off on Tanya, so I thought I'll just crack on.
- 13:00SPEAKER_04: We went to um we had a team day yesterday at the Williams F1 team, uh, like team base.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: That looked really fun.
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: It was it was it was actually awesome.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Like we do a pit stop.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: We did uh uh like uh we went on something called a rig where they like imitate a pit stop.
- 13:18SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 13:19SPEAKER_04: We were meeting like mechanics, and we met the team principal, had went around their like heritage center, um, and like it was all about like trying to take stuff from that learn stuff from what they do, and it's pretty fascinating actually that the the guys who are doing the pit stop, you know, they're under the crazy pressure to you know like change a tire in two seconds, they're just like regular mechanics, and they are almost like up for selection each week for being on the pit pit crew, which to me was absolutely mental.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: So they just pick the ones obviously that do it the fastest, yeah.
- 13:51SPEAKER_04: And they have like they do like practices and stuff like a like a driver would.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: Are you interested in F1 you?
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: I don't know about that.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: No, I think it's I I think I told you, I think that if a sport is based so much around um what's not happening on the on the the circuit itself, I don't think it's a really uh sport, that's my opinion.
- 14:15SPEAKER_04: Wait to shoot me down.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: No, it's just no no no it's fine, you're a larger I'm not gonna lie about it.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: I d I don't I'm not a bit I'm a big fan of Max Verstappen, as in a big fan, like the guy, but both me and Anna just completely rolled our eyes because Max Verstappen is a he's a legend.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: He's like if you're to explain to someone like an alien what a Dutch guy is, I think you should explain it, right?
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: That bit is bang on, right?
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're getting we're getting sidetracked, sorry.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: You is going to try and explain the new format and we're gonna have a chat about the the the drawer and stuff.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, and uh you correct me uh if I'm wrong.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Uh in a in a nice way, please.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: So there's four pools of four teams.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I don't know all the pools, but there's four pools of four teams.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: The top two of every pool goes into another pool, right?
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: So let's say so we are in pool A and uh England is in pool D.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: I think that's also true.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: We our pool matches with the pool of England.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: You take the points you have from your first three games in your pool towards the second pool.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Phil is Phil is nodding no, but it is true, right, Anna?
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: I think you only take the points against the team that come into the pool with you.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry?
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: So who who have you got in your pool?
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Uh we have Argentina, New Zealand, and Japan.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, so say uh you and Argentina go through, you take your points against Argentina into the next pool, but not your points against the two that don't make it through.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Well that's fucking stupid, isn't it?
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: But the points against the other teams are at that point then quite irrelevant because they're going into the classification games.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: But Argentina will be in your pool.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: So you can become second in the pool, but we can become like first in the new pool.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but you have to play the other two teams that are coming in from the other one.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, but let's say let's say, okay, let's say we lose against Argentina, and Argentina wins twice against uh uh the other two teams, but we draw and lose one, so we end up with four points, but we won against Argentina.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: So we get two points less, then we still can we still get into the new pool above Argentina.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: Well that's a fucking stupid format, isn't it?
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: No, no, it's not it's not stupid because then it takes the teams that you're in a pool with, it takes it forward.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: So say England, India, in your example, the Dutch side of the draw is where we're in Holland, is Netherlands, Argentina, England, and India say we draw with India, we would then take one point through to the new pool, then we play you and Argentina.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Pretty arrogant of you to assume that you're going through with India.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Why don't Pakistan and India?
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: I just I just went on rankings.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: Ah, okay, sure.
- 17:34SPEAKER_04: We're just we're just we're just using uh yeah, you did an awful job, by the way.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: I thought you were gonna do better.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: But because you also said that there's two pools, we should have said that two pools are in Belgium and two pools are in the Netherlands, and they don't come.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Not not where it was taken place and shit.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: And then they don't.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Then what are you even doing?
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: And then, yeah, the pools don't come together.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: The the the the sides of the draw, pools A and D, don't come together with B and C until the semi-finals.
- 18:08SPEAKER_04: I'm right.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: So it'll be two pools, they're calling them pools E and F.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 18:15SPEAKER_04: And let's actually fire Anna a question to start with because your pool, Anna, is China, England, India, and South Africa.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: And you're matched with the other Netherlands pool, which is Netherlands, Australia, Chile, and Japan.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: Like, what was your instant reaction when you uh when you saw that draw?
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: We um I was initially um happy to see it.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: Um it's actually quite a similar pool to what we had in 2022.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: Um, we had both China and India, um, but we had the pool of death in 2022 because we had New Zealand as well.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Um, we've also beaten both China and India quite recently.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Um, so I think seeing that pool, we were relatively happy.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Um, and then our crossover with pool A, with the Dutch, Australia, Chile, and Japan.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: Um, obviously, in that pool, the Dutch will be the favourites, but um it'll be interesting to see how the rest of the pool goes.
- 19:09SPEAKER_03: And we would be um at the moment quite confident against those teams as well.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: So we were relatively happy um with our pool.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: So I think it would be, yeah, it's all up for grabs in Paul D.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: What do you rate higher, Australia or Chile?
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: Well, going off recent results, I obviously would have said Australia, um, but they haven't had a good run of results, and they have just recently lost twice to Chile.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Um, so it'll be interesting.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: I think potentially are they a bit of a bogey team for them now?
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: I haven't seen Chile play for a very long time, um, and neither have I played against them for a very long time.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: So um that will be interesting.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: We'll see if there's a few nerves, and Japan are a pretty good team as well.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: So I think Paul A could be interesting.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: It's a very PC answer, by the way.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: Just like you're massively setting you up, and you're just like, I'm gonna straight bat this back.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: You what about you?
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: You got um Argentina, New Zealand, and Japan.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: Does that make a difference to you?
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, uh uh Australia or what no New Zealand is really good, and Japan is also really good.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: So uh you sound like you sound like your captain now, hey.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: I really don't, I really don't know.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I think Argentina is a bit our bogey team uh from the last uh two pro league matches that we drew and we lost uh against them.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Uh uh they're uh oh how do I say this?
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Um I'm not gonna say it politically correct.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: The hope they're they're like uh they they don't like hockey, they just uh they play a low uh a low block a lot of the time.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: They have a lot of really skillful strikers and they just play on the counterattack, which is like a that's their way of playing, and then yeah, it's shit.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: No, but they're fucking good to be honest.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: They're they're like I think they're like the the dark horse of the World Cup, in my opinion, Argentina.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Even more than uh than uh than like than Australia or like uh um uh what do you guys call it?
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: England is.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I think that they they can really really do some damage.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Uh New Zealand, I have no clue because I haven't seen them play in like since 2008 or something.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: They just they never compete in anything anymore because they they don't want to.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: They do have Samuel Lane, which is which which was the best striker of the world until Struan Walker uh popped up.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Um and Japan, I have no clue.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: I've never played against Japan, but I'd love to play against Japan.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Went on a holiday, lovely country, great food, so rate them very highly.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: But I think we should manage to get into the pool E F E together with Pakistan and India.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we should get into that pool.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Together with Pakistan and India and then yeah, see if a semi-final spot is up for grabs.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: And you, Philip, how do you rate your pool?
- 22:08SPEAKER_04: Well, our pool is pretty interesting because it has India and Pakistan in.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: Um there.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: Which, to be honest, if you're like a hockey fan at all, like surely a lot of people are tuning into that game.
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: Like a World Cup, these guys haven't been, you know, Pakistan have kind of been in the wilderness since like I don't know, 2014.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: They're a little bit on the rise, and just seeing them gonna compete on the biggest stage is is is pretty exciting for anyone who's a hockey fan.
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: When I like think about it in terms of us, I think we're pretty happy.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: Like for some reason, almost every time we play a major tournament, we play against Wales, so that some of our teammates, which is a bit annoying.
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: Pardon?
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: We we tend to, you know, yeah, major tournaments play India and Wales, so familiar opponents.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Um but I'm pretty happy.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: Like I think that I'm pretty happy that that you know, like the Germans, for example, who always just you know have a weird world ranking, and then they come to a major tournament and then they they spit spin something, pull something out of their arse.
- 23:17SPEAKER_04: I'm pretty happy they're on the other side of the draw.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: Um, that was probably the only one.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: That group, by the way, Belgium, Germany, France, Malaysia is a bit tasty.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: I kind of like that group.
- 23:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm glad I'm not in that group.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: Um what uh yeah, Anna, what about you?
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: What would you bring?
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: Have you got any other like takeaways that you saw from like the women's pools?
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: Is there any that like really intrigue you or is any like dark horses that you think?
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Um, I think with pool B will be interesting.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: Um uh I think it's obviously hard to tell where Germany are at at the moment.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: So I think it'll be a big battle in that group for top spot.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: And again, USA not people haven't really seen them play at the moment.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Um, so that's a tough one to guess.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: Pool C.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: Um I looking at that, I think that's probably what the harder group.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Um, I think that's a little bit more open.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: Obviously, Belgium as hosts will probably be favourites, but um, Spain in the last like two years have been really up and coming.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: They can be a bit inconsistent, but again, New Zealand historically have been a very good team, but we haven't seen them play.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Um, and then the Irish have recently had a few good results in pro league, and they're competing against top eight in the world a bit more consistently now.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: So I think Paul C will be um, yeah, I think that will be an interesting poll.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: Um nice, and uh we've got a shout out.
- 24:43SPEAKER_04: I don't know if you'll like to shout out Scotland, but Scotland women qualify for the first time in 24 years.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: I'm backing them for the World Cup.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Sorry, Anna.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: Joking?
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: Why why are you backing Scotland?
- 24:59SPEAKER_04: I fucking love Scotland.
- 25:01SPEAKER_04: You need some you need some context to this.
- 25:04SPEAKER_04: They signed Stroon Walker.
- 25:06SPEAKER_04: Struan scored loads of goals in the hoof cluster.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: Struin's just about as of an idiot as you, and they have an an excellent friendship going.
- 25:15SPEAKER_04: So my first the first two weeks they met each other, I had like like five FaceTimes at some point at like 11 pm at night of him just of him just being like in a rubbish Scottish accent, being like, fuck England.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: So so he's fully committed to the Scottish.
- 25:33SPEAKER_04: We just we're a neutral team here.
- 25:35SPEAKER_04: I know that that will you know not make you happy, but well done to Scotland women for qualifying for the first time in 24 years, and it's probably gonna need more people that hate us you.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: No, I'm no, I'm England's biggest fan outside of England.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that feels like that's fading away a little bit with the with the Scottish.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: No, no, I you you taught me that in England if you love someone you insult them.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: That is true.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: That is true.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: We'll bring in like one of the England.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: We'll bring in one of the the the listeners' questions because Scotty Brown, Scotty Brown, that's a good name, uh messaged in saying who's likely most likely to win the MVP at the World Cup.
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: Don't even know if there is one, but like if we were to guess, we've got obviously a nice bit of inside information for the first time ever on the women's side, other than Brendan, who normally knows his stuff.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: But like, if you were giving away a you do you want to give us three names that you think like who's gonna win MVP of the uh the World Cup?
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: For the women?
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, you go men.
- 26:43SPEAKER_04: Let's keep with what you know.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Um crack.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Um I don't want to go like the obvious answers is like Tom Craig, Tom Bone, and let's just say you could come.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: Very unbiased.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: Very unbiased.
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: Anna, do you wanna do do you reckon you can uh rattle off a few names?
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: I mean it's hard not to say the Dutch girls, isn't it?
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: I think um don't say the Dutch girls, they get already enough photos of their arms.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: We need someone we need others.
- 27:29SPEAKER_04: Really put Anna on the spot there.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: Don't say any of the best players in the world.
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah who win everything.
- 27:37SPEAKER_04: You can say whoever you actually it's it's interesting because we have someone who's actually competing against them teams, and so you already get a real good idea about who is the best, like the best players.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: I mean I think sometimes you're really room for Scots now, aren't you?
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Um Jennifer E.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: I used to play with what we call her GD.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: I used to play with her at Wimbledon, actually.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: She's a great girl.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: She's great.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: Um I mean, I think it's hard not to say the Dutch girls, to be honest.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Um, also the fact that it's going to be in Holland.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: I think that'll be some of the favourites.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: Um I'm sure Yibi will be up there scoring lots of goals.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: Um, but who will be player of the tournament?
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: Um Zan will probably be up there.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: Um she was one of my favourite players to play with at Stixon.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: I always enjoy watching her.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: Um again, there could be a couple girls in the Belgium team depending how they get on.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: Um I don't know who else.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: Who's in who's in the Belgian team?
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: Trying to think who they would give it to.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: Is it hard to look?
- 28:54SPEAKER_04: Onglebert?
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: Did I say that?
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Anglebert.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Gernez.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's actually quite a good angle.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Hold on to you, Philip.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Um of your own you win MVP.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: No, I'm not the kind of MVP player, just stand at the back.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Um, I would like to see Sophie Hamilton in the mix.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Um, she's one of our um really good midfielders.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: She just had a very good tournament out in India um and makes a big impact for us.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: So I'd like to see her in the mix as well.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: But yeah, not me.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: That's a great last name.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Hamilton.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: That's a musical as well, isn't it?
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: It is.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: Hamilton.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: It's funny how your brain works, mate.
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: Right, we're gonna um we're gonna take a short break and we will be back on the other side.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: Listen to some adverts.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: Hey, we do adverts now.
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: I haven't said this.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: Let's stick together as adverts.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: Do you want advertising?
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: We're making a shitload of money right now.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: Do you want an advert?
- 30:01SPEAKER_04: Hey, you get in touch with us.

- 30:07SPEAKER_04: So we'll see you in a second.

- 32:54SPEAKER_04: Um we're just gonna probably finish off the the with the World Cup stuff.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: I've got one question for Anna and then one for maybe all of us.
- 33:03SPEAKER_04: It's like first of all, Anna, like candidly, can you tell us like the Germany and Australia dip with the women?
- 33:11SPEAKER_04: Like you're obviously playing against them year on year.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: Like what's the what's the deal with that?
- 33:16SPEAKER_04: Because it's very strange to see two like historically very good nations normally at the top to being like really struggling and in a in a weird spot.
- 33:25SPEAKER_04: Like, can you give any like context to that?
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, firstly, we're quite happy about it because we've now gone above them in world ranking.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: So it's nice for England.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: Um, I think Australia they seem to have had quite a lot of play new players in, so it kind of looks like they're in a bit of a spot where there's new players.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: Um, they haven't really gelled, they've currently got a different coach.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: Um, there's always seems to be rumblings amongst Australia and what's going on over there.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Um, so I think some of their pro league results were you couldn't really take them gospel because they had quite a weak team at times.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: Um and yeah, obviously the two losses to Chile, as we mentioned before, were uh interesting.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: Um I think Germany is a tough one because again, I don't know if they've had their strongest team out yet in the pro league.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Um, we always seem to play them in our summer where they seem to then have their strongest team.
- 34:25SPEAKER_03: So it'll be interesting to seeing this summer um how they actually get on.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't write Germany off.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, again, they had a lot of retirements last year.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: There was a big group of six or seven of them that have been around for a very long time, very experienced players.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: So I think it seems like they're both in a bit of a period where their team's changing a lot, but you can't really be in that period for very long, can you?
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: So see how quickly they get themselves out of it.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: But as I said, we're we're pretty happy about it at the moment.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, if any team's in a state of rebuild, you're always thinking the teams around them are never gonna be mad about it, are they?
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: It's just in yeah, it's uh it's uh yeah, nice to get some inside info.
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: And then like lastly, I was just gonna ask, like, what's your favorite like World Cup memory?
- 35:07SPEAKER_04: Because I I know that um we've all played in the World Cup.
- 35:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, and like what would what would be your like fondest memory of like of playing?
- 35:16SPEAKER_04: You want to start?
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: I'd like to actually make the selection of a world cup, like not as a reserve or getting booted for once.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: That would be like a good memory.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: Um I think playing in India, I don't think I just have one World Cup.
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: I had three World Cup matches.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: That's that's all I did.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: That was a reserve, off the reserve.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: That's still going.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Uh playing against India in India.
- 35:43SPEAKER_04: I had a really big panic then because I was like, he did get picked for a world cup.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Did he get picked for a world cup?
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: No, I was a reserve in 2020.
- 35:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I know that one.
- 35:56SPEAKER_04: We did that selection, but I was like, I'm patient.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: 18, 18, 2018, I think it was.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, right.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: But I wasn't picked, I was I was a don't feel sorry for him.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: No, don't feel sorry.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Like Anna, don't feel sorry.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: You know how it feels to be to win an Olympic medal.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Like, don't feel sorry for me.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Um uh what was your question again, Phil?
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, favorite World Cup moment.
- 36:19SPEAKER_04: Um sorry, just I'm gonna completely cut in here, right?
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: We got home at like uh last week when I was in Ireland.
- 36:26SPEAKER_04: I was just like, they were like, here's your room, here's where you're gonna stay.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: He just like disappears for a second, and he just like just appears with his Olympic gold medal.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: And he's like, You want to touch it?
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: I was like, please, please leave.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: He's he's hungry.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he did it on purpose, but like next to the bed that I was staying in was just like a big thing of Paris and his shirt on it, and I was like, You done that on purpose?
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: And he was like, No.
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: So yeah, it's very open, really.
- 36:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, sorry, you go on.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: I don't feel sorry for you.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Keep it, but uh I I came like I was reserved, then Son of the Vine uh tore something.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: I'll be honest, I have no clue what he tore, but he tore something in his body.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then I had to play the quarterfinal against India in India in the full stadium in uh Bhubaneshwa.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: It's my first game, and we won that one 2-1.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I actually played quite decent, so I think that's my favorite uh World Cup memory.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: Long story short.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Mine would be uh playing in the Home World Cup in 2018.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Um, I was only a year into my career.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, the tournament didn't go that great for us, but um, I don't think many athletes get to say that they've played in a Home World Cup.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think England did it really well.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Um, I just remember there was this like huge, it was like a wall that of the stands that you ran out to, and it was incredible.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: Um, the red arrows flew over.
- 37:51SPEAKER_03: Um, so it was a really cool experience.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: Um, just second year into my career, but um, that's probably one of my favorites.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: That is a pretty easy one, actually, isn't it?
- 38:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I remember that actually they did a huge stand on Lee Valley, and yeah, well, that'll be nice.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: I I think that I mean that is something that we should have said about the World Cup from the start, is that the way that Belgium and Holland are gonna do it, like the Amstelveen Stadium is getting redone, you is that right?
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: Well, the fuckers have been redoing it for more than 10 years now, so it's about time they finish it.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: It's been uh uh they're just gonna put like a temporary stand on uh on the on the opposite side of like the the concrete uh and stadium.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's gonna be really cool.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be like 12,000, 15,000 people that can go in it.
- 38:43SPEAKER_04: Which will which will be un unbelievable, and then also they've built a whole new stadium in Belgium, which also looks looks looks awesome.
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: So I would say that that is something that is great for hockey this summer, you know.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: It it not being in India um for for the first time in 12 years or whatever that is.
- 38:59SPEAKER_04: Um so like we're gonna hopefully have an have an unbelievable tournament.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, I was I didn't even think it.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: I asked the questions for you guys, but I didn't actually do it for my ass myself.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: I'll go with winning the uh the the quarterfinal in 2018 versus Argentina.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: We had a we had a pretty uh pretty weird squad back then looking back.
- 39:22SPEAKER_04: Danny Kerry just took over, um, and we bundled our way uh through the group stages by drawing to China, losing to Australia, and then getting a narrow victory against Ireland.
- 39:32SPEAKER_04: In no way was it uh was it was it anything but um certain then we managed to beat New Zealand and then for some you know we were playing against Olympic champions Argentina and we managed to uh to to put a performance together and then after that it all went uh completely wrong.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I did the semi-final goal.
- 39:50SPEAKER_04: I don't want to talk about it.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: I can't actually remember.
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: Something else happened anyway.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: They lost seven.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: No, six, six, six, five, six.
- 40:00SPEAKER_04: 2018 was a long time ago.
- 40:02SPEAKER_04: Um, right, questions from the listeners.
- 40:05SPEAKER_04: We've got a few, and then we might, if we've got time, we might go into the to the coupe or you might just take over for a little bit.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: Um, first of all, it's not a question, but just uh Alex Peters just wrote to us, you was very kind saying, hi LST, just wanted to say listen to the latest pod around Yupe and Phil not having any fans.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: I don't know when we said we don't have any fans, but maybe you did, Yup.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: Um and it's all Terence and Yibby lies.
- 40:29SPEAKER_04: You not remember this moment at Lee Valley uh last year, and he's attached a photo of you with with some guys, obviously him at Lee Valley last year.
- 40:38SPEAKER_04: Lots of love to you both and miss you, Brendan.
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: I mean he ruined it at the end, but thank you, Alex.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: You went so well, and then he fucked it.
- 40:47SPEAKER_04: Like it went so well.
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: This is uh obviously the I'm putting you both on the spot here, but Mark Leopard asks if you could take something from another team sport and put it into hockey, what would it be?
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: The money in soccer, football.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: You got one which I was gonna say something similar.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: Money or you know, sponsors would be nice as well.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: I think yeah, do you think it means probably a rule or something or not?
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Or do you that I think you can uh interpret it how you would like the money in football if you can get like 20 million a year, that's like life would just be so much different.
- 41:31SPEAKER_04: I would like the cricket fans from like just just cricket fans because when they go away, it's like you don't want football fans because you don't want a load of hooligans, but like you want the guys who get drunk and like really really get into it.
- 41:45SPEAKER_04: And like whenever you go and watch like the Ashes or the T20, just a sport where you get drunk and like really get into watching hockey.
- 41:53SPEAKER_04: I'd like that.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think on that the rugby sevens as well, when everyone gets dressed up, um, and they have themes for the rugby sevens when they go around the world, they also get to go to some.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, we get to go to some cool places, but they get to go to really cool venues and everyone dresses up, and it's basically a bit more like a party, which I think would would be a good atmosphere instead of good old hockey fans.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: And also like the betting, like that there's more betting on our sport because and also that creates that the fans get really into it, but also get like if you mess up, that they're gonna really annoy with you because they have money on you, you know what I mean?
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: That would be really funny.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: I've been thinking about that a lot.
- 42:31SPEAKER_04: You know, like if you turned up to Lee Valley or the Wagner Stadium and there's just like a big board on the sign, it's like you demont to score first, super boost 20 to 1.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, if any of your mates or family go in, like you know you're gonna put some money on that, exact or like let's say, like in Atoman to win to win six balls, you know, or how do you call it like to intercept six balls that you're on four interceptions and people are starting to cheer?
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: Fucking get it, like that would be fucking hilarious, right?
- 43:04SPEAKER_04: That's a great question.
- 43:05SPEAKER_04: What would your bet be?
- 43:06SPEAKER_04: Like, what would it be?
- 43:07SPEAKER_04: Like uh you de mole to run down the right hand sides plus uh over under 3.5.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: I think yeah, that's pretty.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: I would I might get bent, I think.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: Like I might get like uh kicked out because I would definitely know what's happening and then start to run down the right, even though there's no space.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: Start on left neck, start to run down the right.
- 43:28SPEAKER_04: Might it be like turnovers on the left baseline?
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:32SPEAKER_04: Over under 4.5.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: Have you got an insulting one for yourself?
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: How many times does Anna Toma put her hand on the ground during the game?
- 43:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that would be tough to tough to uh put an overunder on that.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: How many times I slap the ball?
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: Quite a few times.
- 43:50SPEAKER_04: Yes, yeah.
- 43:52SPEAKER_04: Would have had some great old ones for the women's squad.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: It'd be like a Holly Perm Webb slider.
- 43:57SPEAKER_04: Like how many times she puts her other defender in jeopardy.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: By sliding the ball at them.
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: And it's going to do a no comment to that one.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: How many times does Brendan Creed pass it to the center forward of the opposite team?
- 44:11SPEAKER_04: You see, this is what, like, can you imagine walking into like the entrance and like I couldn't help it if I had a couple of like you get a couple of quid, you're like, oh can't I put a nice accumulator on this?
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: Talking about this, but I had a I had a Brendan Creed one this uh Sunday.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: I had a Creedy.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: That's how we call it, right?
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: That you pass it to the opposite center for it.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: I took a ball out on my own top of the D's when I be went all nonchalant.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: We were 3-0 up.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: I got a bit arrogant.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Then I did like I I figured right on my own at 16 and I'm trying to pass it over his front with a lift.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: I just didn't do anything, so I passed it right to his forehead, and he had a one way to go again.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: It was amazing.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: Now I know what it's cool.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: No, because I went from zero to hero because I I blocked it myself.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: So I'm I created my own shit, but I cleaned it up.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: But it was it was pretty uh it looked pretty funny, I think.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Because even the like the yes at the in the in the in the highlights, highlights, the even the the the commentator we probably never held a stick said like what is Yuk the Mol doing?
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: It's not hard, no one understands what he's doing.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Like he made me out to be such an idiot, but then I blocked it and the ball went over the goal, and then he said, Oh, he's so lucky he hit it over the goal, even though I blocked it.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: So I don't know what his name is, but fuck you.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: Also, I have got a I've got an additional question for you, Anna, because this is this is something I've already asked you, but it's fun to ask you on the pod.
- 45:40SPEAKER_04: It's like um it's like in you in in in the women's game, it seems like slightly different to the men's game where you could slam a ball onto like a like say someone's pressing you just whack it into their ankle and they're down like in a crump, like crumple down on the floor.
- 45:53SPEAKER_04: And I think I think in general, a men's response is to be like, You okay, mate?
- 45:57SPEAKER_04: Like, how are you doing?
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: Women just just like death stare them out, walk off.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: Is that fair or not?
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: I don't think we mean to do that.
- 46:08SPEAKER_03: Are you referring to the time that I hit someone?
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: Remember when you called me out on it at the Olympics, and you were like, You hit them at the corner and you just like stared at her.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: You brought it off so many times.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: No, I'm I'm saying this isn't just you.
- 46:21SPEAKER_04: Okay, I'm not like putting this just all on you.
- 46:24SPEAKER_04: I would say I would see it like a Europe.
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: I don't I I would like to think that we say sorry, but we probably don't go over to them.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: Sorry, put your hand up, sorry, but you're in the way, so it's like when I asked Indy to say sorry now.
- 46:42SPEAKER_04: Indy, say sorry to your brother.
- 46:44SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: Say it with meaning.
- 46:51SPEAKER_04: No, I'm no, if I'm not I'm not just calling Anna out, I'm calling I mean, this doesn't make any but I'm calling all women out.
- 47:00SPEAKER_04: Is that this is it because my is because yeah, I'm just digging if I'm gonna go even further.
- 47:05SPEAKER_04: I'm calling my own wife out.
- 47:06SPEAKER_04: I watch her play on the weekend, she'll she'll do the same, she'll whack it, and then they just just like why wouldn't you say sorry to them?
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: She's like, I don't know, I'll just say sorry to them.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: I've never actually noticed I'll do it.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: I'll probably pick up on it now.
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: I'll do one at the weekend and I'll go over and really make it okay.
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: You is this just me, or is this are you gonna just give this to me, or if you notice this too?
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I do think that's uh I I think two things women are tougher on the hockey field if they get hit and they they also sometimes you guys get hit and you just don't maybe maybe the ball is a little less uh with comes in with a little less speed, but you just take it, move on.
- 47:52SPEAKER_01: And I feel like 90% of male hockey players are a bit bit of a bitch.
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: If I get hit, I always go down and make like like that.
- 48:00SPEAKER_01: That I'm almost dying.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: I get hit quite a lot, like with corner defense.
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: I always take my time.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Oh shit, I'm sorry, you know what I mean?
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: And I feel like you guys might that's what that and go completely off, not completely off token.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: Corner defense in women's hockey.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: Some of you are really you you've you you're you lost your will to live.
- 48:19SPEAKER_01: Insane.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: You're on the in the right zone in women's hockey, it's just it's is it like a team meeting?
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: Like, who doesn't give a shit about getting hit in the head?
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, me.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, you're right, zone.
- 48:31SPEAKER_01: It's with your glove on the penalty spot.
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: No, well, we and you also you get congratulated if you get hit, you're like, you've done your job.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's it's where we go with this, it's insane.
- 48:44SPEAKER_04: In all seriousness, it is it is you're so bang on you, like it's almost like the evolution of like the the PCD, but with the women's game, it's like three yards in from the men.
- 48:55SPEAKER_04: So like everyone is just everyone's just in a ball in front of the goal and just just all canon fodder.
- 49:01SPEAKER_04: I do think the SIS2 needs to bring in a rule to be like you need to be outside of the post or something, yeah.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: I think in the women's game that we do probably do a lot more moves than in the men's game, so we have to be more narrow because we have to stop the deflectors.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: Whereas how often do you guys deflect from like the P spot?
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: That's right, it's just yeah.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: Well, I have I'm I am one of the blockers, but I don't mind being one of the blockers.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: I would never want to be the flyer.
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: Is it talking normal English?
- 49:30SPEAKER_03: What would you call a blocker?
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, we call it right and left zone.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: The ones around the P spot.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right and left zone.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but left zone is fine.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: It's the right one who just like who's like bits on the on the on the penalty spot, sitting there waiting to get hit.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: It's it's insane.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I want to be the left zone as you call it, but then sometimes we run two flyers at drag flickers, so then I get called in to do that, and I've never signed up to be a flyer, and then I'm the one that has to get hit.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: And I'm always like, I didn't want to be a flyer, I want to be a blocker.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: I think it's insane.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: I'd love to be in the meeting once.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: Like, what are you good at?
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: You blocker.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: Like I can sit there and get hit.
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I also just would love to see it just where they go in and be like that, you know, the left hand's on the penalty spot, but it's like you need to be just a little bit further in.
- 50:29SPEAKER_04: You know, there's a gap there.
- 50:32SPEAKER_04: Don't get hit.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: Um, we'll move we'll move on to some more questions.
- 50:37SPEAKER_04: Um, we got a little bit of a little bit of stick.
- 50:41SPEAKER_04: You Hamish Walker wrote in, um, I don't remember saying this, but maybe we did.
- 50:46SPEAKER_04: Last episode you stated that you need to be a top player to coach a skill.
- 50:49SPEAKER_04: Did we say that?
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 50:52SPEAKER_04: Okay, if we said it.
- 50:53SPEAKER_04: He totally disagrees.
- 50:55SPEAKER_04: Best players are not the best skill coaches.
- 50:57SPEAKER_04: He just thinks working with a player to find a way forward together.
- 51:01SPEAKER_04: Um let me guess.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: Hamish Walker is a coach himself and he was shit at the hockey pitch.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: Or not.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: Pure speculation.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: It's very yeah.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, Hamish.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you your question.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: We just said if you can give a good tip, but then give a good tip.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: If you're a shit layer and give a shit tip, but it's in general, like I don't say it.
- 51:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't think we said you can't coach.
- 51:36SPEAKER_04: I'm trying to think, was this the social media stuff where we like don't give out advice?
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: Sorry, Hamish.
- 51:42SPEAKER_04: You know, keep listening.
- 51:43SPEAKER_04: You just like you really.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: Um no, I don't it's not that I don't like I've never met Hamish, but I don't it's not that I don't like him.
- 51:51SPEAKER_01: I just think if you don't know what you're talking about, stop talking about it.
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: Or make it out that you that you that you're every time I say something, I do say I have no clue what I'm saying, but I think I feel like you've kind of like contradict yourself a little bit there.
- 52:08SPEAKER_04: I do understand, Hamish, in a serious point, that you don't have to be a top player to coach skill.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: No, I don't think that um you can just be a good coach.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: I don't know what I don't really know what I'm what what what okay?
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: If you if if you go to uh to personal uh personal training and and you're uh and your uh your uh your your instructor is fat, do you think oh he is gonna learn me how to become really fit?
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: Good point.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: If you go to a speaking coach and he stutters, what do you think?
- 52:43SPEAKER_04: I th I think there's a difference here because there's being a good skill coach and being a good coach, because I think when you like I think you probably do have to have a real understanding of the top level of the game to be a good overall coach because you have to have an understanding about what it's about.
- 52:58SPEAKER_04: You don't have to have been like a world-class player, but you have to have played at a certain level.
- 53:04SPEAKER_04: But to coach a good skill, I don't know.
- 53:06SPEAKER_04: You can just you could be you could be have just really good technique and be able to pass that on.
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: So I'm okay.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: Here's I'm gonna be now I'm gonna be serious about it.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: I'm serious.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: I think you can be a good coach without having to having played at the highest level.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: Like, not all the best coaches right now are word best players, like for instance, Tone Denoyer.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: I don't think he's the best coach there is, maybe even far from it, but he was the best player by far in the world, so it's not like an automatic one-two.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: I do think if you're talking pure technique stuff, like if you're talking about there is this guy, I think it's called leap hockey.
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: He's an English guy, and I saw a clip once of him talking about how to defend, and then he was like, and he was with his hand on the ground running back and shit.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: And I was like, That's not how you if you if you if you're with your hand on the ground pressing as a forward and someone's running at you, you're never gonna win the ball.
- 53:59SPEAKER_01: I'm being very technical now.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: But then I think don't teach the wrong shit, you know what I mean?
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: So if you're talking pure technical shit, I think it's better to have played at a high level so you know what's actually the technique.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: If you're talking in general coaching, I think some of the best coaches have never played at a high level.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: I also think you need to kind of be able to demonstrate it yourself as well.
- 54:23SPEAKER_03: Like if my coach can't is trying to teach me a skill and they can't demonstrate it, I'm probably gonna stop judging them.
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: Like, I've had moments like that.
- 54:31SPEAKER_03: I'm not the best one for 3D skills, and then if I'm at a kid's camp and they want to be taught 3D skills, I'm like, nah, can't do it.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: I'm not coaching it.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: You want to know how to slip a ball?
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I can do that.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: Hey, what about left blocker?
- 54:46SPEAKER_04: Left zone, the death zone.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: We've got a ball machine.
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: There you go, Hamish.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: I think we've successfully answered your question there.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: Um keep listening, Hamish.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: We like you some a little bit.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: Um Y2 DDN.
- 55:07SPEAKER_04: Does the brand of hockey stick make a difference at international level?
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: Yes, oh my god.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: Like there's Y1 and there's the rest.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: Like, if you don't play with Y1, you're you're you automatically lose.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: Like the only reason us three are playing international hockey is the stick, not talent, stick only.
- 55:27SPEAKER_01: Right, Philip?
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: Right, Anna?
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: You what's what would be your least favorite stick?
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: Um that's such a good question.
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: Well, I like the there's this uh there's the the it's not like brand, but like the two thicks.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Phil also plays with it, like such the they're so thin, there's like no body to the stick.
- 55:47SPEAKER_01: Uh and with the like the the the also kids, stop trying to always get a stick that's like a 90-degree angle with a curve.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: You you you will not become a better hockey player with playing with a stick that doesn't look very bendy.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: But brand, I don't know.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: I I always kind of disliked Osaka a little bit.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: Don't know why, just it's not not for me.
- 56:09SPEAKER_04: Same question, Anna.
- 56:12SPEAKER_03: Um I'm trying to think of some of the brands that some of the girls played with that have picked up some of their sticks before and thought that's horrific.
- 56:19SPEAKER_03: Um, or horrific for me, not for everyone out there.
- 56:23SPEAKER_03: Um, Griffin.
- 56:25SPEAKER_03: I don't like Griffin, even though I actually played the Griffin when I was younger.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: Um and I've actually picked up Lily Houseley's stick quite a few times, and that's an STX, and that was that was not so great for myself.
- 56:38SPEAKER_04: Well, no STX sticks are actually STX, I don't think.
- 56:41SPEAKER_04: That's a good inside, a bit of information there.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: Um let's um go one more question.
- 56:48SPEAKER_04: Uh and this didn't come from I think someone said where's the best place you've ever played hockey?
- 56:53SPEAKER_04: But I didn't write down who asked.
- 56:54SPEAKER_04: But we'll go with what about best and worst?
- 56:57SPEAKER_04: Because that makes it a bit more spicy.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: What's the best and worst place you've ever played hockey?
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I think the best place I've ever played hockey, but it's also it's not just like if we're talking pure stadium and only the stadium, and you're talking uh Rukela, Rukela in India, because it's it's like you're playing in a football stadium, it's it's pretty much packed every time you play India.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: Um but everything around is shit, so I wouldn't say that.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: I really like Perth.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: I think they have these these um cross stands, like around, which I like really uh really nice and feels cozy.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: And it I like the in like I love Australia, the whole vibe, and that's there.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: Uh and the worst it's probably Santiago del Estero, uh in Argentina last winter when the pitch was not watered for the last year, so it was really shitty, and people forgot there was uh uh like the the the the football um like the the like the league cup from Argentina or something, so which was in Santiago del Estero, so no one went to the game to watch our games.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: Um so probably that you ready?
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: Um I think my worst would probably be when we play in Spain, because there never seems to be anybody watching um at all.
- 58:28SPEAKER_03: I think the last World Cup we it was um game split between Holland and Spain, and we played our quarter final in Spain, and it was a huge stadium, and it was there was nobody in it, but it was also quite far back from the pitch, so there's a massive gap between the pitch and the stadium, so it felt so far away, um, and there was nobody in it, um, there was no atmosphere, so it was really quite unenjoyable.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: Um was it with like a trek around it or not?
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, there was a trek around the outside, so even if it was full, it would have not been very good because the crowd would have felt far away, but we wouldn't know because there was nobody there.
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: Um, I think my favourite, um I would I love playing at home when it's full.
- 59:15SPEAKER_03: Um, I think the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, um we had like fulls full stand the whole tournament.
- 59:24SPEAKER_03: Um, and again it was just like one big wall on one side, and you ran out towards them.
- 59:29SPEAKER_03: Um, and it was amazing, and that was like not long after COVID when um we hadn't been playing in front of everyone, and it was it was incredible, and it was also where I went to university.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: Um, so I absolutely loved loved playing it, and the the pit was also amazing.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: Umunder.
- 59:49SPEAKER_04: Sorry, it's okay.
- 59:50SPEAKER_04: It's only the only addition is that there was like one wall of a crowd, and they were were just like not a hockey crowd at all, so they got like stuck in.
- 59:59SPEAKER_04: Like it was clearly people who'd be like, I want to go and watch the commies, don't know what event, like let's just go and get stuck into whatever event I go to, and then they like they just like when you scored, there was like an actual like cheer, and people would like when we played the Aussies, people like booing them and stuff.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: And I was like, This is absolutely fucking great.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_04: I love you guys.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: Um, do you know that looked like a six venue though?
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: It wasn't with like the tower or something.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: I can remember.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: Is it yeah?
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: It's called old old Joe, is that tower?
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_03: He's very famous at Birmingham.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_03: So there's quite I think it was six or seven, old Joe, six or seven of the girls in the team that went to Birmingham Uni.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: Um and obviously mine was quite a long time ago.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_03: I think I went in 2011, and the accommodation that we stayed at at the Commonwealth Games was the accommodation where I was at uni in the first year, so we call it Freshers, and it has not changed one bit from 2020 eleven to 2022, so it was a bit of a circle moment for me, but it was also kind of kind of gross as well.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was awesome, but yeah, you were like you had to go back to your uni days.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_04: Um, my worst, I was gonna go completely different.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: I was gonna I was gonna say Leak Hockey Club, um, which is just a UK hockey club where um I played there about three times in my life, and each time it's a horrible soundbase.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_04: Um, they beat the shit out of you.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_04: They had three guys on the sideline who hurled abuse at you, and um yeah, I I didn't enjoy playing there.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_03: Did you ever play at Whitby?
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: I didn't play at Whitby, no.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, Whitby was that.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: I remember it was in the middle of nowhere and it was always really windy.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_04: I I always say to you that he should come over to England for one season just to like experience the uh like what it's like.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: It will humble you, it will really humble you at times.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: He needs it.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_04: I do need it.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_04: That's I feel like that's a pretty nice, like natural ending to the to the podcast.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_04: This has been this has been a great well.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_04: I've I've really enjoyed myself.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_04: Anna, thank you um so much for for coming on, putting up with me and you um giving us nice insight into uh into into the women's game.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_04: We would love to to have you back.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_04: Um you any any closing remarks?
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: It's always funny how you end the episode with like already defending our ourselves.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel this was a pretty good episode.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: Like you're all you're always already defending us before people ever even listened.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Stand behind your shit, Phil.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: We did we did great.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: Anna did amazing, you did decent, I was good, like good episode.
