Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Darren. All right, well, the Knicks
- 0:08Speaker 1: are up three to nothing, and that's what I say. Well,
- 0:11Speaker 1: look up Alex Media to start this one with Lou Terminilo.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Terminilo's take, Lou. In my lifetime, the Knicks have never
- 0:18Speaker 1: been up three to zero in a series, and I
- 0:20Speaker 1: can remember maybe you can bite you cannot.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Well, in my lifetime they have, but my lifetime is
- 0:27Speaker 2: longer than yours, Alex. Alex, thanks you for having me
- 0:30Speaker 2: as always. Yeah, the Nicks are three legs up on
- 0:35Speaker 2: the seventy sixers, and I mean they are going to
- 0:39Speaker 2: playing great. The chemistry I think is better than ever.
- 0:44Speaker 1: It was funny. We all thought Mike Brown was going
- 0:46Speaker 1: to be out the door after this Hawks put up,
- 0:49Speaker 1: came back from twelve down, But here we are two
- 0:52Speaker 1: weeks later on the verge of go to the conference finals.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Well it shows you that how crazy sports is. Yes,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you're right. Two weeks ago and I knew the nick
- 1:03Speaker 2: weren't going to lose that series. I didn't think they
- 1:06Speaker 2: might have had to go seven if they were down
- 1:08Speaker 2: two to one. But yes, Mike Brown was going to
- 1:11Speaker 2: be out. The team was going to be broken up.
- 1:14Speaker 2: You know all all this is happening, but shows you
- 1:18Speaker 2: how you know how things change in sports so quickly.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I mean, going into the season, the Knicks were considered
- 1:26Speaker 2: to be the best team in the East, something that
- 1:29Speaker 2: we had talked about earlier. You really can't gauge anything
- 1:33Speaker 2: from an NBA regular season. The Knicks have definitely definitely
- 1:37Speaker 2: put their foot on the gas pedal, raised their level
- 1:41Speaker 2: in this series. Yes, they should beat these two teams
- 1:43Speaker 2: that they've played. It's no upset better than them the
- 1:48Speaker 2: seventy six ers. For all of their process over the
- 1:51Speaker 2: last ten years, their process has done nothing. It shows
- 1:55Speaker 2: what tanking. They tanked for three years they won ten games,
- 1:59Speaker 2: they won eight eighteen games, they were nineteen games. They tanked.
- 2:02Speaker 2: They had the number one pick or top three picks.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Ben Simmons markel Foltz was drafted number one overall. Jalil
- 2:14Speaker 2: Okaford was drafted number three from Duke. In the last decade,
- 2:18Speaker 2: Embiid was drafted number three overall. Missed the first two
- 2:21Speaker 2: years and the third yearly played thirty one games. And
- 2:24Speaker 2: Embiid when he was healthy was a great town. But
- 2:28Speaker 2: Alex he's never healthy and now he's a shell of
- 2:31Speaker 2: what he was, they're done now, and I don't mean
- 2:33Speaker 2: it for the series. Yeah, they've done in the series,
- 2:35Speaker 2: but I don't know where they go. The Knicks did
- 2:38Speaker 2: a great job. They knew that if they double team Maxie,
- 2:43Speaker 2: who's had a bad series the next I've taken him
- 2:45Speaker 2: out of the series by double Tamiam led by Bridges,
- 2:48Speaker 2: who's playing his best basketball in his you know, two
- 2:54Speaker 2: years as a Knick. So yeah, now they'll win it.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They're gonna win the series. So they'll be playing probably
- 3:01Speaker 2: Detroit in the finals. And as I pulled you, I
- 3:04Speaker 2: think I think the Knicks matchup great with Detroit. They're
- 3:08Speaker 2: more mature than Detroit.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I really think sports cast. Look, I love that Sean
- 3:15Speaker 1: Mick got some playing time finally this series, because he
- 3:18Speaker 1: was kind of not their last series. I'm glad they're
- 3:20Speaker 1: playing him, uh, you know, and then the Alvarados of
- 3:24Speaker 1: the world, and and all these backup guys to the
- 3:27Speaker 1: Bruns and the Hearts and the Obie. It's amazing how
- 3:31Speaker 1: chemistry is happening here, as you say, because you know,
- 3:34Speaker 1: definite Thivodeau would burn out all his guys. That's why
- 3:37Speaker 1: by the end of the second round they'd be injured
- 3:40Speaker 1: heading into the Conference finals. Two years in a row.
- 3:43Speaker 1: By the way, I remind you, two years in a row,
- 3:45Speaker 1: they didn't have a healthy heart healthy you know, Obie healthy,
- 3:50Speaker 1: there's healthy that because they were all burned out. This
- 3:54Speaker 1: is finally the system that's working, and I knew it would,
- 3:57Speaker 1: but uh, I just want to see them beat the
- 4:00Speaker 1: trade they were. They lost all the regular season. Well,
- 4:03Speaker 1: first of all, they need to shut down the Sixers tomorrow.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I do not want it to come back to the
- 4:08Speaker 1: Garden after this momentum. I want to end it in Philly.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Why not, right?
- 4:12Speaker 2: I mean, come on, Alex, you got it. When you
- 4:15Speaker 2: have a chance to any series, you gotta end them,
- 4:18Speaker 2: no matter whether you're up three to three, to two,
- 4:21Speaker 2: three to one, three three nothing. You don't want to
- 4:24Speaker 2: play an extra game if you don't have to, because
- 4:27Speaker 2: you can get nicks cut, you know, nix and bruises,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you can get hurt. I mean, with the Knicks up
- 4:34Speaker 2: three nothing, even if Ananobe is ninety five percent healthy,
- 4:38Speaker 2: I would not play them. There's no reason to play
- 4:41Speaker 2: them tomorrow. I think the Knicks will will close them
- 4:45Speaker 2: out tomorrow. You're right, you do not want to come
- 4:47Speaker 2: back for Game five. If they do that, so be it.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But you want to get these games over with as
- 4:53Speaker 2: soon as possible. The Knicks will get a lengthy rest.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Sometimes that hurts, sometimes it it helps, But you got
- 5:02Speaker 2: to get the series over. You can't worry about the
- 5:04Speaker 2: other series when that's gonna end, because I assume Cleveland
- 5:08Speaker 2: will win at least one of the two games in Cleveland.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And talk about an underachieving postseason team, the Cleveland Cavaliers,
- 5:16Speaker 2: I mean, they've had you know, two years, what did
- 5:18Speaker 2: they win over sixty games, and they just.
- 5:21Speaker 1: They that's unhearted. It's horrible.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Like this, it's horrible.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Eleven time All Star and he's like putting up almost nothing.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It's it's unbelievable to me, and it's it's not it's
- 5:32Speaker 2: it is unbelievable. You're right, and this is not the
- 5:34Speaker 2: first time he's done it. Obviously, he's had a lot
- 5:37Speaker 2: of great regular season accomplishments and accolades, but his postseason
- 5:43Speaker 2: that's what he's gonna be known for. His failure in postseason.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Well, when he was with the Nets, you know, it
- 5:48Speaker 1: was very weird because either he'd be injured or duramb
- 5:51Speaker 1: be injured. No one was on the same court as
- 5:53Speaker 1: the same None of those guys were on the same court.
- 5:55Speaker 2: At the same and that killed and that's what killed
- 5:57Speaker 2: the Nets and led to the breakup of the Nets.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Who have let's see, let's tomorrow. I'm glad you brought
- 6:04Speaker 2: the Nets. Tomorrow's a big, a big day for the
- 6:06Speaker 2: Nets because to see where they're going to be drafting.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Even though I'm I'm against tanking, they get they can't.
- 6:13Speaker 2: They got to be in the top three tomorrow. If
- 6:15Speaker 2: they get pushed back again, what did tanking accomplish? But
- 6:19Speaker 2: we'll see. Uh this is this is the last year
- 6:22Speaker 2: of tanking for them because they flip with Houston next year,
- 6:26Speaker 2: Houston could take their pick. So I'm sure they don't
- 6:28Speaker 2: want to be in the lottery next year. But and
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, next year they're going to be the new
- 6:33Speaker 2: anti tanking rules rules. We'll see what they are. But
- 6:36Speaker 2: getting back to the getting back to the Knicks, I mean,
- 6:38Speaker 2: I think the Knicks and De Troy will be a
- 6:40Speaker 2: good series. Detroit last year actually had you know, the
- 6:43Speaker 2: experience to play them. But again I always use my
- 6:46Speaker 2: four out of seven. I don't think Detroy could beat
- 6:50Speaker 2: the Knicks four out of seven. I don't.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Well. When he puts the team on his back every night,
- 6:56Speaker 1: that's very tough to come back from every series.
- 6:59Speaker 2: So I'm yeah, you're right. And Detroit is getting the
- 7:03Speaker 2: secondary scoring. We had talked about the question of if
- 7:06Speaker 2: they don't get secondary scoring. And Tobias Harris or why
- 7:09Speaker 2: am never been a big fan of, has played very
- 7:12Speaker 2: very well. I think he's had seven straight points, seven
- 7:15Speaker 2: straight games excuse me, where he scored twenty plus points
- 7:20Speaker 2: and he's had an impact on the game. So they
- 7:24Speaker 2: need they're gonna need that to beat the Knicks. The
- 7:27Speaker 2: one thing with the Knicks still, Karl Anthony Towns has
- 7:32Speaker 2: to stay out of foul trouble. He was in foul
- 7:34Speaker 2: trouble last night, and I mean last night the Knicks
- 7:37Speaker 2: were gonna win. But against say Oklahoma City in the finals,
- 7:41Speaker 2: if a Knicks want to extend that series to six
- 7:45Speaker 2: or seven games, which I don't see why they can't.
- 7:48Speaker 2: If Indiana did last year against Oklahoma City, the Knicks
- 7:52Speaker 2: should be able to do that, even though Oklahoma City
- 7:54Speaker 2: is really, really, really good. But Carl Anthony Towns has
- 7:58Speaker 2: to stay out of foul trouble. He really does, and
- 8:01Speaker 2: the Knicks are using their bench, like you said, which
- 8:04Speaker 2: is something I haven't done in the past, and the
- 8:05Speaker 2: Sixers have no bench. So I don't think anybody who
- 8:11Speaker 2: roots for the Knicks, anybody who follows the Knicks, Knicks management,
- 8:15Speaker 2: they gotta be one happy the way the Knicks have performed.
- 8:19Speaker 2: And yes, the Knicks don't pick their opponents. Yes they're
- 8:21Speaker 2: better in Atlanta and better than the Sixers, but they
- 8:25Speaker 2: beat them. They put their they stomped on their on
- 8:32Speaker 2: their necks, and that's what you gotta do. And really,
- 8:35Speaker 2: the last the last six games, the six game play
- 8:39Speaker 2: off winning streak, that's what they've done. I mean, really, Alex,
- 8:42Speaker 2: these games havn't been close. You knew the Knicks win
- 8:45Speaker 2: to win, you know, in the fourth quarter. I mean
- 8:48Speaker 2: one game they won by fifty one points, another game
- 8:50Speaker 2: they won by thirty nine, you know, in the sixth streak.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So they've really been dominant, which is what you want
- 8:57Speaker 2: to be at this stage in the postseason.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I want to stay in the NBA playoffs for a second,
- 9:03Speaker 1: because it looks like the Thumbder's gonna have a pathway
- 9:06Speaker 1: to the finals again because they just they're dumbinant and
- 9:10Speaker 1: look We know the Lakers don't have Luca, but I
- 9:14Speaker 1: don't know where Lebron goes after this. This is really
- 9:16Speaker 1: not a good series for you know, Lakers who still
- 9:19Speaker 1: have Lebron. James almost like maybe this is the ending
- 9:23Speaker 1: for him in LA. What do you think it could be?
- 9:26Speaker 2: I mean as rumors that he'll play one more year,
- 9:28Speaker 2: maybe go back to Cleveland as a swan song. As
- 9:31Speaker 2: for his final year, he's still playing at a very
- 9:33Speaker 2: high level, Alex he really is is Is he the
- 9:39Speaker 2: best player in the league anymore? He's not, But Kenny's
- 9:42Speaker 2: still play bad than most NBA players He's short had,
- 9:46Speaker 2: And it's too bad that they don't have Luca. It
- 9:50Speaker 2: would have been an interesting series. I think JJ Reddick
- 9:53Speaker 2: has done a good job complaining about the officials the
- 9:56Speaker 2: other night that the officials in the beat didn't beat
- 10:02Speaker 2: the Lakers. Oklahoma City's superior team did so. But Red's
- 10:08Speaker 2: done a good job. They have Luca as a centerpiece
- 10:11Speaker 2: of their team. As far as far as Lebron goes,
- 10:15Speaker 2: I assume he will either resign with the Lakers for
- 10:18Speaker 2: one more year or or go to Cleveland. I can't
- 10:22Speaker 2: see him going anywhere else. I can't see him going
- 10:25Speaker 2: to the Knicks or the Celtics. I can't. I can't.
- 10:29Speaker 2: But Oklahoma City is going to get to the finals
- 10:31Speaker 2: in all likelihood, but Alex, they're gonna have to go
- 10:34Speaker 2: through San Antonio. And if you see how good and
- 10:38Speaker 2: how athletic and how talented the San Antonio Spurs are,
- 10:45Speaker 2: they're not gonna get swept by Oklahoma City. I mean,
- 10:48Speaker 2: web Yami is fantastic, Wemby is I mean he had
- 10:53Speaker 2: those twelve blocks the other night. Stephen Cassel from the
- 10:58Speaker 2: Kid from Yukon twelve assists this is a very, very
- 11:02Speaker 2: good team that's only going to get better. Their immaturity
- 11:06Speaker 2: might might slow them down, lack of experience against Oklahoma City.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But I think for the next five years it's gonna
- 11:12Speaker 2: be Oklahoma City and San Antonio battling it out to
- 11:15Speaker 2: see who gets to the finals. And if you're a
- 11:17Speaker 2: Knicks fan, in my opinion, if you're a Knicks fan,
- 11:19Speaker 2: and I'm not, but if you're a Knicks fan, you
- 11:22Speaker 2: want san Antonio to beat Oklahoma City because I think
- 11:25Speaker 2: the Knicks have a would have a more more than a.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I think they might be favored against San Antonio. I
- 11:31Speaker 2: do they might be or the it'll be close, they'll
- 11:34Speaker 2: be they'll be underdogg.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Again because of the experience, they'd be favored.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, yeah, it's gonna it's gonna be close. So
- 11:41Speaker 2: but San Antonio, they're here to stay. They really are.
- 11:46Speaker 1: It's they won a lot of but that is amazing
- 11:49Speaker 1: how he's the pathway is for the Knicks to get
- 11:51Speaker 1: to this next level of the finals. And remember I
- 11:54Speaker 1: was only a little little one in ninety four and
- 11:58Speaker 1: ninety nine. Though I remember ninety nine a little bit, by,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I don't remember it that well. So this will be serious.
- 12:04Speaker 1: But you know, the thing about the Spurs is Webby
- 12:07Speaker 1: is just what was he six seven or something? No?
- 12:11Speaker 2: What? Yeah? Absolutely yeah, And he's long, and he's athletic,
- 12:15Speaker 2: and he could he could hit the three. I think
- 12:17Speaker 2: he takes too many threes. That's just me. I think
- 12:20Speaker 2: he takes too many threes. But you know, they got
- 12:24Speaker 2: lucky in the lottery. You know, they drafted Dylan Harper.
- 12:28Speaker 2: You know they got lucky. They moved up to the
- 12:32Speaker 2: number two spot and to Dylan Harper, who has been
- 12:34Speaker 2: a contributor for them, the kid from Jersey. They're good,
- 12:39Speaker 2: they're good. You can't take them for granted, that's for sure.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I mean, I think Oklahoma City will beat them, but
- 12:44Speaker 2: Oklahoma City is not going to sweep them. They're not.
- 12:49Speaker 1: No. I think that could go six or seven. But look,
- 12:52Speaker 1: the Wolves are still good, so you never know what
- 12:53Speaker 1: happens in that series. It should be San Antonio series though, right,
- 12:59Speaker 1: that's what we're looking at.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, san Antonio should should finish show off Minnesota. Minnesota
- 13:07Speaker 2: might win tomorrow and tie it up to two, and
- 13:10Speaker 2: then it might go seven. It could go seven, but
- 13:13Speaker 2: san Antonio and the end should come out on top.
- 13:17Speaker 1: All right, Let's switch Gears of the Ice now, because
- 13:19Speaker 1: I know our fans love to talk about the NHO
- 13:21Speaker 1: and I thought the Carolina series going as I thought
- 13:25Speaker 1: it would be the Buffalo series, I did not think
- 13:29Speaker 1: they'd be losing at all, at least in the early
- 13:31Speaker 1: stages to Montreal and Montreal might be the real deal.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Louis Montreal is the real deal. Both of these teams
- 13:38Speaker 2: are the real real deal. That's what makes this series
- 13:41Speaker 2: so interesting. And see who's going to prevail. And last
- 13:47Speaker 2: night with Montreal jumping all over Buffalo early in the game,
- 13:52Speaker 2: and you know, going on to that easy victory. They're fast,
- 13:58Speaker 2: you know, they and they haven't gotten anything out of
- 14:03Speaker 2: you know, like Carl Cawfield. Yet nothing in these playoffs
- 14:07Speaker 2: because obviously it's tougher to score in the playoffs, especially
- 14:10Speaker 2: in the Eastern Conference style of play then in the
- 14:15Speaker 2: regular season. But you know, they got Dopson back Montreal.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Did you know. He's a terrific defenseman. And they getting
- 14:28Speaker 2: great play, They getting great play from from their goaltender.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And it's gonna go this. I'd be shocked if this
- 14:37Speaker 2: doesn't go six or seven games, I really would. Now,
- 14:40Speaker 2: the next two games are in Montreal. It's gonna be tough.
- 14:42Speaker 2: But Buffalo won you know, three games in Boston. Now,
- 14:46Speaker 2: Buffalo's power play, which I believe it or not, ended
- 14:49Speaker 2: the regular season into that first round. Throughout that first
- 14:52Speaker 2: round was one for forty three on their power play,
- 14:54Speaker 2: and they got good power play players. They just were
- 14:58Speaker 2: in slump. They were two three in the power play
- 15:00Speaker 2: on the first game, and uh, they need they need
- 15:05Speaker 2: to get that. I mean, uh, some of these young
- 15:08Speaker 2: guys on on Buffalo, to Zach Benson and Josh Norris,
- 15:12Speaker 2: have been really good. They're deep teams. These are two
- 15:14Speaker 2: deep teams. This is this is the toughest series to pick, Alex.
- 15:19Speaker 2: It really is. I mean it's that it's that close.
- 15:23Speaker 2: One you know, one bounce of the puck, uh, you know,
- 15:27Speaker 2: hits a chip in off the in the off the
- 15:29Speaker 2: ice or off the the back the backboards, the end boards.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I mean, that's how close it That's how close it is.
- 15:37Speaker 2: This is this is a really intriguing series. Really, it
- 15:41Speaker 2: really is. And I think it's gonna go six seven
- 15:45Speaker 2: And I'm not even gonna pick a win here because
- 15:46Speaker 2: I don't know, so I'm not even gonna try to
- 15:49Speaker 2: try to uh to be uh uh An nostradamis on
- 15:54Speaker 2: this or I'm not uh but uh. To the Philadelphia
- 15:58Speaker 2: Carolina series, yes, you're right, it's gone basically the way
- 16:01Speaker 2: I thought they had a chance. In that second game,
- 16:05Speaker 2: you know, went to overtime. They dominated the overtime, but
- 16:08Speaker 2: Carolina Carolina scored. The Canes are so hard to play,
- 16:16Speaker 2: they really are. They They're the Canes. They're deep, they're confident,
- 16:21Speaker 2: their style of play never changes. They and you know,
- 16:26Speaker 2: everybody thinks that they're really not a great goal scoring team,
- 16:29Speaker 2: but they had seven guys who scored twenty plus goals
- 16:33Speaker 2: this year. And you know, you see the resurgence of
- 16:38Speaker 2: Taylor Hall, a former MVP when he was with the Devils,
- 16:42Speaker 2: has played very well for them. And if Freddie Anderson
- 16:46Speaker 2: keeps playing goal like he's been playing, especially after having
- 16:51Speaker 2: a down regular season, could they could be the in
- 16:56Speaker 2: the Stanley Cup Final. But that you know that series,
- 17:00Speaker 2: that series is over, maybe Philly will win you know,
- 17:03Speaker 2: game four. But not a good time for Philadelphia's even
- 17:06Speaker 2: though this has been unlike the Sixers, for the Flyers,
- 17:10Speaker 2: this has been a positive year, a positive year for
- 17:14Speaker 2: the Flyers.
- 17:16Speaker 1: They're gonna get like a whole stating, oh if the
- 17:17Speaker 1: season over tonight, I mean they're still gonna get at.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yes they are. I mean they they are a good team.
- 17:23Speaker 2: This is not like just sneaking into the playoffs where
- 17:27Speaker 2: the veteran team that you know is not gonna go anywhere.
- 17:30Speaker 2: But with Philadelphia, Buffalo, Montreal, uh, all these young teams
- 17:37Speaker 2: in the East Alex for fans here in the New
- 17:41Speaker 2: York area, the Devils, the Rangers in the Islanders are
- 17:44Speaker 2: going to really have to fight hard to get back
- 17:48Speaker 2: into these in playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Thing because in my lifetime, the Rangers always almost make
- 17:55Speaker 1: the playoffs, so it's good.
- 17:56Speaker 2: It's it's gonna be. It's it's gonna be. This a
- 17:58Speaker 2: very interesting offseason for the three local teams, that's for sure.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I was surprised that Anaheim got boat raced last night
- 18:07Speaker 2: at home.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I'm still very high on them because I want Prior
- 18:11Speaker 1: to win the ship, but they're down two to one
- 18:14Speaker 1: right now after the goal at Knights, and maybe that's
- 18:15Speaker 1: an experience thing about.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the first two Hey, Anaheim could have
- 18:21Speaker 2: won the first two games they won, the second game
- 18:24Speaker 2: they lost. They lost the first game on the controversial goal,
- 18:28Speaker 2: a controversial decision and icing was not called. And you
- 18:36Speaker 2: know the hybrid icing. They'll call it once whoever gets
- 18:40Speaker 2: to the faceoff dot first, and this one it looked
- 18:44Speaker 2: like it should have been icing. They didn't call it.
- 18:47Speaker 2: The play continued and Vegas scored. Joel Quinville and the
- 18:55Speaker 2: Anaheim bench were screaming before the goal was scored that
- 18:58Speaker 2: it was that wasn't called icing. So again, you know
- 19:04Speaker 2: the hybrid icing. It was a safety concern obviously used
- 19:09Speaker 2: to have to touch the punk behind the goal line,
- 19:12Speaker 2: and guys were getting smashed into the boards, and I've
- 19:14Speaker 2: seen guys get badly injured. But maybe it's time to
- 19:17Speaker 2: go to the no touch icing. As soon as the
- 19:19Speaker 2: puckets over the over the end line, uh, then you know,
- 19:24Speaker 2: blow the whistle. I've always been for no touch icing.
- 19:28Speaker 2: But we'll see that. Vegas was very impressive last night.
- 19:34Speaker 2: And then and uh they caught they caught the young
- 19:38Speaker 2: ducks on their heels. And you know, last night they
- 19:42Speaker 2: went they were an easy six to two. I thought
- 19:44Speaker 2: Age might be catching up with Vegas. Maybe it is,
- 19:48Speaker 2: but uh, they're still pretty good. And the other series,
- 19:55Speaker 2: Colorado Minnesota. You got two great teams. But the other
- 19:59Speaker 2: night Colorado, when they went up, they went up to nothing.
- 20:02Speaker 2: At home, they were on a mission. Nathan McKinnon was
- 20:05Speaker 2: on a mission. Cole mccarr was on was on a mission.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I think I could be wrong watching the body language
- 20:12Speaker 2: of McKinnon laying out people, including Quinn U's American gold medalist.
- 20:19Speaker 2: I still think McKinnon has the chip on the shoulder
- 20:24Speaker 2: of losing the gold medal game to the United States,
- 20:26Speaker 2: and I think that's gonna draw. That's driving him even
- 20:29Speaker 2: more to win the Stanley Cup, which I think they
- 20:31Speaker 2: will do. So it's been it's been an interesting, been interesting.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Colorado Minnesota gain Now that looks that looks like that
- 20:41Speaker 2: series should go seven, but who knows, it may not.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I mean that's how good Colorado looked these first two games.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Well, we'll have to see what happens, all right, Louis
- 20:51Speaker 1: uh I did bring them up with Branson and Ryan,
- 20:56Speaker 1: but I'll bring up with you as well. A couple
- 20:57Speaker 1: of other hockey notes. The Rangers firing all of Hartford's
- 21:01Speaker 1: coaching staff. It's an unusual move, but maybe it's a
- 21:05Speaker 1: signed there trying to really rep up and prevamp player development.
- 21:09Speaker 1: What do you think player development?
- 21:11Speaker 2: I definitely think that's what it is. I mean, you know,
- 21:18Speaker 2: they need to get younger, and I think they want
- 21:21Speaker 2: to accelerate the development of these players if they think
- 21:25Speaker 2: these players aren't reaching their full potential. The Rangers are
- 21:29Speaker 2: going to have the fifth pick in a draft this year.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Unfortunately for them, they were supposed to pick third, but
- 21:37Speaker 2: they got pushed down to by a cup by a
- 21:41Speaker 2: couple of teams jumping ahead of them, including San Jose.
- 21:45Speaker 2: By the way, San Jose another team that didn't make
- 21:48Speaker 2: the playoffs. That's on the com in the Western Conference.
- 21:52Speaker 2: They'll be probably a playoff team, just missed this year,
- 21:56Speaker 2: probably will be next year. And they'll have the number
- 21:57Speaker 2: two pick in the draft. They were supposed to pick No. Nine,
- 22:00Speaker 2: so they jump seven spots. So will they trade that pick,
- 22:08Speaker 2: will they use that pick?
- 22:10Speaker 1: You know?
- 22:10Speaker 2: Will they trade that pick together, you know, a young
- 22:13Speaker 2: veteran to help propel them that So that'll be interesting
- 22:17Speaker 2: to see what what San Jose does. Toronto won the lottery.
- 22:23Speaker 2: They're gonna take ninety nine percent, so they're gonna pick
- 22:26Speaker 2: Gavin McKenna out of Penn State. Uh and uh yeah,
- 22:31Speaker 2: but the Rangers. That's why the Rangers did it. They
- 22:34Speaker 2: need to accelerate player development. I understand why.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Yep. But then we'll talk about the loss of John
- 22:45Speaker 1: Starling in a minute. But let let's put let's go
- 22:48Speaker 1: to baseball real fast.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Yep.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I'm not even worried, Like I feel like the Angs
- 22:52Speaker 1: are gonna be on autopilot for a little bit and
- 22:55Speaker 1: then I'll check it in with them a memorial that
- 22:56Speaker 1: that's what it feels like right now. I know they
- 22:58Speaker 1: lost pretty rough last night to Brewers, who were not
- 23:02Speaker 1: the not the team they were a few years ago.
- 23:04Speaker 1: But I'm not worried. Louis actually the first year in baseball.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I'm not worried about it because things need to be
- 23:12Speaker 1: rolling along for the inks. So we'll see.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah. No, a couple of things. The Yankees are very
- 23:17Speaker 2: very good. They have they have outstanding starting pitching. They're
- 23:24Speaker 2: going to win the division. They're probably they're going to
- 23:26Speaker 2: be the one seat in all likelihood unless somebody gets hurt,
- 23:29Speaker 2: you know, unless Judge runs through the wall at Dodger
- 23:31Speaker 2: Stadium like you did a couple of years ago. But
- 23:35Speaker 2: you know, thumbs down on the American League. The American
- 23:38Speaker 2: League stinks, guys. I mean, there's no other way to
- 23:41Speaker 2: say it unless somebody rises. You know, last year, Toronto
- 23:45Speaker 2: rose the second half of the year and was pretty good,
- 23:47Speaker 2: got to the World Series. But you know, you got
- 23:50Speaker 2: the American League West, the American League Central. Those teams
- 23:53Speaker 2: aren't really those teams aren't good. Last year there was
- 23:58Speaker 2: a little bit of a boost with like I said, Toronto.
- 24:00Speaker 2: The Red Sox were okay, but you know what, the Yankees.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Toughest opponent's going to be the Yankees. They better, you know,
- 24:11Speaker 2: if they get too overconfident or like I said, if
- 24:13Speaker 2: something happens. I mean, their pitching is unbelievable, and Judge
- 24:19Speaker 2: is unbelievable. I mean he has He's a guy who'said
- 24:22Speaker 2: all these home runs, and he has more home runs
- 24:24Speaker 2: on this date than they find his career. I mean,
- 24:29Speaker 2: what could you say. I mean, so if you want
- 24:31Speaker 2: to say, oh time, he's the best player in baseball, okay,
- 24:35Speaker 2: I don't argue with that, but Judge is right there
- 24:37Speaker 2: with him. You can't put one over the other. You
- 24:40Speaker 2: really can't. I can't, you know, I mean.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and actually, and then the other thing is on
- 24:47Speaker 1: the other side of town. After that boost the confidence
- 24:50Speaker 1: from David Stearns a week ago or so, the Mets
- 24:53Speaker 1: have been playing better.
- 24:54Speaker 2: So I don't know, just well, they couldn't play They
- 24:56Speaker 2: couldn't have been played any worse, you know. The one
- 24:59Speaker 2: thing is Alex the lineup the Mets have been putting
- 25:03Speaker 2: out this week. Even though they've won five, they're five
- 25:06Speaker 2: and two on this road trip, and if they could
- 25:07Speaker 2: win one more game, come back six and three, that's
- 25:11Speaker 2: a small step towards towards a positive way to get
- 25:17Speaker 2: back into quote unquote the race. But they got to
- 25:19Speaker 2: get the five hundred first uh, deadline up deadline this week,
- 25:23Speaker 2: Alex has been just downright embarrassing. Austin Slater Melendez, I
- 25:30Speaker 2: mean some of the you look at the lineup and
- 25:31Speaker 2: it's just what is going on? What was what was
- 25:35Speaker 2: David Stern's thinking about. Yes, they don't have Polanco. I mean,
- 25:39Speaker 2: the guy's a good hitter, you know, twenty six seventy
- 25:42Speaker 2: six and about two to seventy five bang average last year.
- 25:46Speaker 2: They need that and they don't have They don't have Lindor,
- 25:49Speaker 2: and apparently they're not gonna have Lindor for a while.
- 25:52Speaker 2: We don't hear. He's hurt worse than Soda was. And
- 25:56Speaker 2: they lost Sodos for those twelve games, for those fifteen
- 26:00Speaker 2: games where they were three, they won the first three
- 26:02Speaker 2: games or out Soto then lost twelve in a row.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And they lost a couple of games in that twelve
- 26:09Speaker 2: game streak, won nothing twice two to one. A couple
- 26:12Speaker 2: of times Soto one swinging the back could be a
- 26:15Speaker 2: difference maker. Maybe they win. Maybe they win instead of
- 26:19Speaker 2: losing twelve in a row. Maybe they're three and nine,
- 26:21Speaker 2: which is horrible. But if they're three and nine instead
- 26:24Speaker 2: of being eight games in the five hundred. They would
- 26:27Speaker 2: be three games in the five hundred or four games
- 26:30Speaker 2: in the five hundred. But this team is just so
- 26:34Speaker 2: poorly constructed, it really is. I have no idea what's
- 26:37Speaker 2: going on behind closed doors in that metal office. Khane's
- 26:42Speaker 2: been silent. He can't be happy. You know. Now they
- 26:46Speaker 2: come home and play Detroit for three and then they
- 26:50Speaker 2: play the Yankees for three. And you know, anytime the
- 26:53Speaker 2: Mets and the Yankees get together, every New York media
- 26:57Speaker 2: outlet is there, and the Yankees might might bury them. Yeah, so,
- 27:06Speaker 2: and that might be the end from Mendoza. We might
- 27:09Speaker 2: hear something from Cohen.
- 27:11Speaker 1: But but at the same time, they always tearing up
- 27:14Speaker 1: the gears against the Yankees more so than other teams
- 27:17Speaker 1: I noticed.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yes, uh huh, Absolutely, there's no doubt about it. When
- 27:20Speaker 2: they play each other, it's doesn't matter if it's if
- 27:23Speaker 2: they're playing the checkers, they're both teams going to you know,
- 27:28Speaker 2: they're going to be into the game. That's that's definitely gone.
- 27:31Speaker 1: But I agree with you. I mean, even on the
- 27:32Speaker 1: Yankee side, they have Max Schuman or whatever this kid's
- 27:34Speaker 1: name is up and he started the game on Thursday
- 27:38Speaker 1: for Cabby and then just Sundom gets hurt and know
- 27:42Speaker 1: all that changes everything. But I do wonder about the
- 27:45Speaker 1: line up structure for the Yankees. I know they're gonna
- 27:47Speaker 1: be okay, but that they're winning with guys that you
- 27:51Speaker 1: don't really hear about the every day bases. It's very interesting.
- 27:54Speaker 1: One of the Major League Baseball notes, though, I will say,
- 27:58Speaker 1: if you missed it, Tarik schools down for three to
- 28:00Speaker 1: four months with surgery. And this guy is the guy
- 28:04Speaker 1: that was so worried about pitching for Team USA because
- 28:07Speaker 1: it's going to ruin his arm and all, and yet
- 28:10Speaker 1: he's injured anyway. I don't know. The pitching of today
- 28:13Speaker 1: is so strange like that, like all of a sudden,
- 28:15Speaker 1: this kid's in a contract year, going down for three
- 28:18Speaker 1: to four months for surgery. Something's got to change with
- 28:21Speaker 1: our pictures, Louis.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Well, yes, yeah, absolutely, And it's the one thing where
- 28:26Speaker 2: and you know, I have critical I'd been of Stearns
- 28:28Speaker 2: and I've been critical of him on this podcast. The
- 28:31Speaker 2: one thing I agree with him, I would never give
- 28:34Speaker 2: a picture more than a four a four year deal.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I mean, he's eight year deals to pictures, and that's
- 28:41Speaker 2: what Struble's going to get from somebody even with the
- 28:44Speaker 2: operation and missing three months unless he comes back in
- 28:51Speaker 2: three months, and this ineffective. I just want to son,
- 28:55Speaker 2: he's got these pictures to long term contracts. I don't
- 28:58Speaker 2: know what it is. All these guys keep getting hurt
- 29:01Speaker 2: over and over and over every you know, every day
- 29:04Speaker 2: you're looking on a crawl or you're you're looking on
- 29:08Speaker 2: the various websites. Who's out for three months, who's out
- 29:11Speaker 2: for the year, Who has Tommy John? Everybody's getting Tommy John.
- 29:15Speaker 2: I mean, it's ridiculous, but you know, you're talking about
- 29:19Speaker 2: Major League Baseball and one I want to give the
- 29:22Speaker 2: one team thumbs up. Season's only thirty nine games old,
- 29:27Speaker 2: and the Chicago Cubs have their second ten game winning
- 29:30Speaker 2: streak in the first thirty nine games. It's only happened
- 29:34Speaker 2: four times in Major League Baseball, Alex. The last one
- 29:37Speaker 2: to do it was the nineteen fifty five Brooklyn Dodgers,
- 29:40Speaker 2: who won their first World Series that year. It's only
- 29:44Speaker 2: four of the other three times was nineteen forty one,
- 29:47Speaker 2: eighteen eighty eight, and eighteen eighty That's actually the only
- 29:51Speaker 2: time in the first thirty nine games you had two
- 29:53Speaker 2: game winning streaks. The Cubs are good. The Cubs are.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Good well, and I tell you the signing has paid off.
- 30:02Speaker 1: He's actually living up to the contract and he's just
- 30:04Speaker 1: he's a great kid to watch play, I'll tell you that,
- 30:07Speaker 1: and to get alerts about him.
- 30:08Speaker 2: So there's no doubt about it. I mean, and once
- 30:12Speaker 2: the ball is hit out to right center, left center,
- 30:15Speaker 2: he's going to track it down. He's that good at
- 30:18Speaker 2: defensive center fielder.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Well, well that's the other look again, I'm not worrying probably.
- 30:24Speaker 1: You know, in the last few months, basketball has really
- 30:27Speaker 1: been on the you know, the focus here because of
- 30:31Speaker 1: Saint John's to begin, the Yankees and Mets opening day
- 30:34Speaker 1: that they were the guys that were about to do this,
- 30:36Speaker 1: Switch sixteen the next day, Sweet sixteen the next day,
- 30:39Speaker 1: and then the Knicks. So it's it's like baseball almost
- 30:43Speaker 1: takes a back seat when these basketball teams and yes, hockey,
- 30:47Speaker 1: when the Rangers are good, are doing well through the spring.
- 30:50Speaker 1: I mean, there's no doubt about it.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree with that. I mean, obviously, the
- 30:56Speaker 2: baseball season is, as we said, you know, it's a marathon.
- 30:59Speaker 2: It's so long. Once the NBA season's over, especially locally,
- 31:05Speaker 2: if by some chance Nicks don't get to the finals,
- 31:08Speaker 2: you know, then baseball will take center stage and the
- 31:14Speaker 2: criticism on the Mets or the Yankees or whatever. The
- 31:17Speaker 2: Yankees need to get another piece of the same.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Mike Chuck could comes to the Yankees. I don't know
- 31:23Speaker 1: if that happens, but we'll see.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I could see that. I mean, he's having
- 31:28Speaker 2: a good year. I mean he's not the Mike Trout
- 31:31Speaker 2: that we knew who's the best player in baseball. But
- 31:35Speaker 2: getting back to to basketball, one thing in basketball that
- 31:38Speaker 2: happened on Thursday, late Thursday afternoon that I totally disagree
- 31:42Speaker 2: with is the NCAA expanding the tournament from sixty four
- 31:48Speaker 2: to seventy six teams. I mean, Alex, this is a
- 31:51Speaker 2: money grab. Just you know, obviously there's more games that
- 31:54Speaker 2: will be televised, and I'm sure there's a clause in
- 31:56Speaker 2: there in their deal that more tell of os games,
- 32:00Speaker 2: they get more money. It's I'm sure it's not gonna
- 32:02Speaker 2: say stay the same, You're just gonna have more mediocre
- 32:06Speaker 2: teams that that are gonna be playing on what will
- 32:09Speaker 2: be the first four will now be the first twelve. Uh,
- 32:14Speaker 2: you know they're gonna they're gonna continue in Dayton because
- 32:16Speaker 2: Dayton's a great basketball town. And then they're gonna have
- 32:19Speaker 2: uh uh, you know, three games on Tuesday, three games
- 32:22Speaker 2: on Wednesday, like a wild.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Card round for a bet for March Madness right there.
- 32:26Speaker 2: That's right, that's exactly what it is. And you're not
- 32:29Speaker 2: gonna have the Cinderella teams playing anymore because they're gonna
- 32:32Speaker 2: be playing each other in these first four, in these
- 32:35Speaker 2: first twelve, I get whatever they're gonna call it, but
- 32:40Speaker 2: you know, it's a it's a. It's they're going, they're delivering.
- 32:43Speaker 2: They're evaluating the regular season more and more than ever.
- 32:47Speaker 2: So teams that are five and eleven in there in
- 32:49Speaker 2: the big conferences, you know, the Big Ten, the Big Twelve,
- 32:52Speaker 2: the ACC, the Big East, are gonna get in the NCAA.
- 32:56Speaker 1: That's selection show. It's gonna be two hours then.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Yea, No, it's it's now. It's let's face, it's professional
- 33:02Speaker 2: basketball that's run by the.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Major is driving list. That is what you're saying.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Oh, I would say money's driving at ni L and
- 33:13Speaker 2: I think this is just a leading to what could happen,
- 33:18Speaker 2: uh where if they didn't do this. The major conference
- 33:22Speaker 2: and they still might do this, especially because of the
- 33:25Speaker 2: football situation, might break away from the NCAA, and that
- 33:30Speaker 2: that is still very possible. I don't like I don't
- 33:35Speaker 2: like the expander.
- 33:38Speaker 1: How would that work if they were to keep playing?
- 33:40Speaker 1: How would that work if.
- 33:43Speaker 2: They if they split?
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 33:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what they'll do is just saying we'll
- 33:48Speaker 2: just say it's the Big twelve, the ACC on the
- 33:54Speaker 2: Big ten and the SEC say hey, let's just leave
- 33:58Speaker 2: the NCAA start our own. There'll be lawsuits and all
- 34:02Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, and we'll do our own deal
- 34:06Speaker 2: with with CBS, NBC, ABC, Prime Video. That could happen
- 34:13Speaker 2: in twenty in the early in the early thirties, after
- 34:16Speaker 2: these TV deals expire. Remember, basketball's popular, but it's driven
- 34:24Speaker 2: it's driven by football. It's driven by football. But I know,
- 34:28Speaker 2: I don't like them going from six, you know, from
- 34:30Speaker 2: sixty eight to seventy six teams, Alex. When I first
- 34:34Speaker 2: saw watching the NCAA tournament, it was twenty four teams.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Then it went to thirty two. You know, it's just
- 34:43Speaker 2: things change, my friend.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Yes, they do, all right. Speaking of change. Two days
- 34:49Speaker 1: after Frank Bolton retires from the Ducks, New York loses
- 34:54Speaker 1: a legend John Sterling, and you know, we all know
- 34:58Speaker 1: he had his boy Wolves and as as others say
- 35:01Speaker 1: mistakes last ten or so years. But you knew him.
- 35:07Speaker 1: You knew his announcing better than a lot of people,
- 35:08Speaker 1: I think, because you listened to him on n wmc
- 35:11Speaker 1: A and then you know he was the Islander guy
- 35:13Speaker 1: and the Nets guy and the Hawks guy. I mean
- 35:16Speaker 1: he did a lot of He did more sports that
- 35:18Speaker 1: we give him a credit for.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Firstly, Alex, he did a lot of sports. I mean
- 35:23Speaker 2: he did the Baltimore Bullets who are now the Wizards
- 35:26Speaker 2: for one year. He did Morgan State football for I
- 35:30Speaker 2: think five six years on their network. He did the
- 35:36Speaker 2: Nets for six years. In the last couple of years
- 35:40Speaker 2: it was simulcast radio and TV. He did the Islanders
- 35:44Speaker 2: for three years and had a signature call when he
- 35:50Speaker 2: was with the Islanders out there that cook story about
- 35:53Speaker 2: the Islanders in the second and John Sterling he did
- 35:58Speaker 2: he actually did the New York Golden Blades. New York
- 36:01Speaker 2: Golden Blades were the uh well actually their first call.
- 36:05Speaker 2: They were called the New York Raiders, Alex. Their games
- 36:07Speaker 2: were on WMCA. They were in the world Hockey Association,
- 36:12Speaker 2: so he did their games in seventy two seventy three
- 36:14Speaker 2: on on the UMCA, and then the next year they
- 36:19Speaker 2: changed their name to the Golden Blades, but after a
- 36:21Speaker 2: half season they couldn't pay their bills. They played that
- 36:24Speaker 2: Nison Square Garden and during the middle of the season
- 36:27Speaker 2: they finished their season down in Cherry Hill at the
- 36:31Speaker 2: Cherry Hill Arena and they were called the Jersey Knights
- 36:33Speaker 2: in at the Lapidate Arena. At the end of that
- 36:36Speaker 2: year they were sold and they moved to San Diego
- 36:39Speaker 2: and played the next three years before the team the
- 36:42Speaker 2: team went out of business. He was also the play
- 36:45Speaker 2: by play on WMCA for the World Football League team
- 36:50Speaker 2: called the New York Stars. They played at Randalls Island
- 36:54Speaker 2: and the Bob Sheppard was their PA announcer. Believe it
- 36:57Speaker 2: or not, Randalls Island was a hell hole, dilapidated stadium,
- 37:01Speaker 2: but John did the play by play there. He did
- 37:07Speaker 2: everything it really He did the play by play and
- 37:10Speaker 2: his color commentator was somebody who died three or four
- 37:14Speaker 2: months ago, former Jet great Matt Snell. It was still
- 37:18Speaker 2: doing the play by play and Matt Snell did the
- 37:20Speaker 2: color and Bob Sheppard was the PA announcer, but the
- 37:22Speaker 2: team only lasted a year and a half. So then
- 37:26Speaker 2: he went to Atlanta and he became a voice on
- 37:29Speaker 2: TBS when TBS was thriving thanks to Terred Tarriner, who
- 37:33Speaker 2: passed away last week. You know, he made TBS a superstation.
- 37:38Speaker 2: So you knew John Sterling, you knew on a national basis,
- 37:42Speaker 2: you knew John Sterling. Stip carried Pete van Weir and
- 37:45Speaker 2: Joe Simpson, Don Sunton. Everybody watched the Braves, and then
- 37:51Speaker 2: when they became good, they became America's team. They really
- 37:54Speaker 2: did from a baseball standpoint. And Sterling was there for
- 37:57Speaker 2: nine years, and then he came to the Yankees to
- 38:00Speaker 2: do their radio in nineteen eighty nine, and he was
- 38:03Speaker 2: there for thirty six years and really did over five
- 38:08Speaker 2: thousand games and did five thousand and sixty in a row,
- 38:12Speaker 2: which is just mind boggling, and for the last fifteen
- 38:16Speaker 2: years did the or plus maybe twenty years he did
- 38:20Speaker 2: all nine innings alone. Yes he was eccentric, Yes he
- 38:24Speaker 2: was quirky. Yes he wasn't the standard play by play announcer.
- 38:29Speaker 2: As far as fundamentals, his fundies, as Keith Hernandez would say,
- 38:34Speaker 2: might have been a little a little sketchy, but he
- 38:38Speaker 2: was a character of the game and that was part
- 38:42Speaker 2: of part of his charm. Very yes, I met him
- 38:45Speaker 2: a couple of times because he did some next backup
- 38:47Speaker 2: games when I was there after he left the Nets. Yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 2: even talking to him, he always felt like he wasn't
- 38:56Speaker 2: listening to you. But you know, everybody's different. But back
- 39:01Speaker 2: when he was the Nets announcer after Roy bow who
- 39:06Speaker 2: really shouldn't have owned the Nets and the Islanders maybe
- 39:10Speaker 2: one team, but he didn't have the resources to own both,
- 39:13Speaker 2: and that's what led to the selling of Doctor J.
- 39:17Speaker 2: John Strong was very close to Kevin Lockery, the Nets
- 39:19Speaker 2: coach during the final ABA years when they won the
- 39:22Speaker 2: championship and then to their first three four years in
- 39:25Speaker 2: the NBA. He had that choice after they after the
- 39:29Speaker 2: Nets and Islanders split ownership, to go to the Islanders,
- 39:34Speaker 2: continue to do their radio or go to the Nets. He
- 39:37Speaker 2: decided to go to the Nets, which he said, if
- 39:40Speaker 2: I'd stay with the Islanders, you know, I would have
- 39:43Speaker 2: been there for their couple years. He left just before
- 39:46Speaker 2: their cup years began, so that that's this little interesting tidbit.
- 39:52Speaker 2: But he was a unique guy, to be sure, and
- 39:57Speaker 2: had an incredible voice. I mean even to the end,
- 40:01Speaker 2: he had incredible pipes that god.
- 40:04Speaker 1: You know Yaus was hired by w ABC to do
- 40:07Speaker 1: some sports talk after he retired from the game.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, they did.
- 40:12Speaker 1: So it was a connected. Now we we're going to
- 40:14Speaker 1: play his islander goal in a little bit to end
- 40:16Speaker 1: the segment. But for me, it was just I never
- 40:20Speaker 1: got to deserve the week. So I just said, here
- 40:25Speaker 1: the synchronicity of my dad passing in twenty three on
- 40:28Speaker 1: April fifteenth, which is your birthday, yes, and then John
- 40:33Speaker 1: Sterling retiring a year later, it was very not jarring,
- 40:37Speaker 1: but it was very fascinating to me because you know,
- 40:40Speaker 1: my dad loves Sterling. He listened to him all the time,
- 40:42Speaker 1: and he bashed him a little bit, but that's fine.
- 40:45Speaker 2: You know everybody everybody did.
- 40:47Speaker 1: But but he raised me on He raised me and
- 40:50Speaker 1: this whole and our parents raised us on John Sterling.
- 40:53Speaker 1: And that's what I was trying to say is this
- 40:56Speaker 1: generation was raised on John Sterling. And that's why on Monday,
- 41:01Speaker 1: the entire community, I don't care how old you are,
- 41:05Speaker 1: we all felt it. From any age ranger, it was
- 41:07Speaker 1: pretty remarkable. How long.
- 41:10Speaker 2: You're right. I'm not even a Yankee fan, and I
- 41:12Speaker 2: felt sad on Monday. I agree, I agree with you.
- 41:16Speaker 1: And it's not just us, it's the younger kids to
- 41:18Speaker 1: that feeling because we grew up listening to Sterling because
- 41:21Speaker 1: even though it was twenty four, a lot of us,
- 41:24Speaker 1: you know, a lot of the kids still listened to
- 41:27Speaker 1: Sterling because he was the here of twenty four.
- 41:28Speaker 2: So you know, and you know, obviously you live in
- 41:32Speaker 2: a different era because you know you're young. But in
- 41:36Speaker 2: the seventies when when WMCA starred his sports talk show
- 41:42Speaker 2: like six to eight it was six to eight or
- 41:44Speaker 2: five to seven, it was like the greatest thing for
- 41:49Speaker 2: US sports guys. I mean, Gary Cohen talked about it
- 41:51Speaker 2: the other night or talking to Keith that he used
- 41:54Speaker 2: to listen to it. And he said on WMCA. By
- 41:57Speaker 2: the way, WMCA didn't get unpaid publicity that wnc A
- 42:02Speaker 2: those four calls got last week. It was probably five
- 42:06Speaker 2: hundred thousand dollars worth of mentions. But we all used
- 42:10Speaker 2: to listen, and boy John was bombastic on the air.
- 42:13Speaker 2: If you disrespected them on the air, he went right
- 42:16Speaker 2: back at you. He was he was not he was
- 42:19Speaker 2: not afraid to call to call the listeners out, which
- 42:22Speaker 2: made the show interesting.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Well, it's gonna be it's gonna be sad, they're gonna
- 42:30Speaker 1: put a patch on sorry. May eighteenth, and then of
- 42:33Speaker 1: course I'm going to Old Timer's Day, which is ironically
- 42:36Speaker 1: against the Braves, which I find interesting because two of
- 42:41Speaker 1: those world series were against the Braves. In Ted Turner's Heyday,
- 42:46Speaker 1: I mean, it's all kind of weird how.
- 42:48Speaker 2: All that's happened, it really is.
- 42:50Speaker 1: But he also inspired and my mom's had a great
- 42:52Speaker 1: idea to say a prayer by the microphone because he
- 42:55Speaker 1: did inspire me to get into the broadcasting biz. Of course,
- 42:59Speaker 1: I think anybody in media and calling games listening to Sterling,
- 43:03Speaker 1: you were inspired by that, you know, him and Bob Murphy,
- 43:06Speaker 1: and for me also how he rose. I mean, those
- 43:09Speaker 1: three were the guys that I listened to constantly.
- 43:12Speaker 2: And baseball on a radio is different than just about that.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Michael Okay. The k Sterling connection was so special that
- 43:20Speaker 1: when they moved him to Yes, it definitely changed the booth. Now.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I love Susan. I think they had an interesting rapport,
- 43:27Speaker 1: but Kay and Sterling were just something else you won't
- 43:30Speaker 1: get that kind of duo anywhere else ever again in
- 43:33Speaker 1: my view, but Alex absolutely because they they bounced off
- 43:39Speaker 1: each other, they were just and I was young. But
- 43:42Speaker 1: I'll tell you my first memory of listening to them.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I played video games a lot as a kid, and
- 43:48Speaker 1: they did the video game version of one of the games.
- 43:54Speaker 1: I go to the backseat of my dad, my stepdad's car.
- 43:57Speaker 1: He turns on the game, like, wait, these are the
- 44:00Speaker 1: guys from the video game, And then I realized Kay
- 44:03Speaker 1: and Sterling were the voice of the eight. And I
- 44:05Speaker 1: had to be about seven or eight years old when
- 44:08Speaker 1: I realized that. And you know, it seemed to me
- 44:13Speaker 1: that Sterling Michael was very young when they paired him
- 44:17Speaker 1: with him. That was the other thing about it. He
- 44:20Speaker 1: was a kid still when they paired him with Sterling.
- 44:22Speaker 2: He had actually had been the beat writer for the
- 44:24Speaker 2: Nets for the Posts, because that's how I knew him,
- 44:28Speaker 2: and I haven't seen him in twenty years. But it
- 44:33Speaker 2: was a good guy. He was the Nets beat writer,
- 44:35Speaker 2: and I knew him pretty well when he was covering
- 44:37Speaker 2: the Nets in his newspaper days. And then got an
- 44:40Speaker 2: opportunity to do the Yankees, and apparently of the five
- 44:45Speaker 2: or six finalists. Some of them had done play by
- 44:49Speaker 2: play already, but John said, this is the guy I
- 44:51Speaker 2: want after listening to his tape, and the rest is history.
- 44:56Speaker 1: And yeah, and Michael was. Michael also was. He was
- 45:00Speaker 1: good on radio in his own right. And you know,
- 45:03Speaker 1: we see Gary Cohen on on TV, but I have
- 45:08Speaker 1: to say him and Murphy were very special also to
- 45:10Speaker 1: listen on the air, and they had that kind of
- 45:14Speaker 1: same rapport. And Murphy lasted a long time, actually, I
- 45:19Speaker 1: remember I think he passed oh four or five one of.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Those, yes, yep, right around there yet.
- 45:25Speaker 1: But no Cohen, Murphy, Case Sterling. They were the voices
- 45:29Speaker 1: of Art and then how he and Fran on Fox
- 45:33Speaker 1: Sports Net. Man, I could go all day about this.
- 45:35Speaker 2: He's just like, yeah, I mean, we're gonna lose a
- 45:38Speaker 2: great announcer when he retires at the end of this year, Howie,
- 45:41Speaker 2: that's for sure.
- 45:42Speaker 1: And see I think how he was on f A N.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Then they moved him to TV, and then Cohen was
- 45:48Speaker 1: on radio. Then they moved him to TV.
- 45:50Speaker 2: And Cohen said he would never do TV. But I
- 45:54Speaker 2: guess when when they told him how much money, how
- 45:56Speaker 2: much more money he can get on TV and radio.
- 46:01Speaker 1: We love you, Gary if you're listening. But yes, no,
- 46:03Speaker 1: I get what you're saying too, but no that And
- 46:08Speaker 1: of course, you know what happened is thrilling began all
- 46:13Speaker 1: those calls when they were starting to winning those championships.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I guess he did before them, but they were really
- 46:17Speaker 1: highlighted because they were on those championship right.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Absolutely, they were highlighted because the Yankees were. I mean,
- 46:24Speaker 2: that's one of the great teams of all time, that
- 46:27Speaker 2: those four championships in five years. Even though the ninety
- 46:30Speaker 2: six team was more of an overachieving team against the Braves,
- 46:38Speaker 2: but ninety eight, ninety nine, two thousand, even two thousand
- 46:41Speaker 2: and one, which I lost Game seven, those four teams
- 46:44Speaker 2: were dominant.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Ninety six, I mean, lay Rich, that's thirty years ago.
- 46:48Speaker 1: How is that possible?
- 46:49Speaker 2: But how is that possible?
- 46:51Speaker 1: But no, it's uh well, And that's the other thing.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I feel motivated to go back out there and do
- 46:58Speaker 1: play live late because that's my passion. And you know,
- 47:01Speaker 1: I feel like this loss is something that inspires me
- 47:05Speaker 1: to keep going with play by play as a thank
- 47:08Speaker 1: you to John for filling on our airwaves up with
- 47:11Speaker 1: with his calls. I mean, and then how he's retiring,
- 47:16Speaker 1: like it's time to get back out there and start
- 47:19Speaker 1: making de moreals. How I feel, it's like it's to
- 47:22Speaker 1: thank these guys for all they did for us.
- 47:24Speaker 2: It's your sweet spot, go for it, that's it.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I love it. And I've done basketball about hockey, well
- 47:30Speaker 1: not so much hockey. That's tough sport to do. But
- 47:33Speaker 1: basketball and baseball are by sweet spots. So who knows one.
- 47:36Speaker 1: But it would be a thank you to John, to
- 47:39Speaker 1: my dad, to my mom, all these people for pushing
- 47:43Speaker 1: me to listen to radio when I was a little kid.
- 47:44Speaker 1: I mean, that's what it is for me.
- 47:46Speaker 2: So I love radio. You know that.
- 47:50Speaker 1: It's uh, it was sad, and it is sad. I
- 47:54Speaker 1: mean I thought after he retired he was going to
- 47:57Speaker 1: be around till ninety I really, or or more I
- 48:00Speaker 1: thought he was still gonna be around for a while.
- 48:02Speaker 2: But yeah, nah, I mean, but he had a great life.
- 48:07Speaker 1: He had an incredible life, and he will be missed.
- 48:11Speaker 1: And I have to say also that I think the
- 48:14Speaker 1: newer generation of voices on there, and I don't mean
- 48:17Speaker 1: Dave Simons is a vet. I mean the Justin Shackles
- 48:19Speaker 1: of the world. They're gonna make their moment too. I
- 48:21Speaker 1: think I know he called the perfect game for her mom.
- 48:25Speaker 1: But Shackle has so much potential to as a kid,
- 48:28Speaker 1: you know, so I think he's going to keep growing.
- 48:30Speaker 2: No, I agree with that. I think justin Shackle, Emmanuel Barbarry,
- 48:35Speaker 2: I mean, they all they all have.
- 48:37Speaker 1: And then you guys have the Mets have a good
- 48:40Speaker 1: team that go on the road, and how he doesn't.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I mean that's a good squad right that.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I wonder what the Mets are going to do.
- 48:45Speaker 2: I wonder if they're going to keep Keith I assume
- 48:48Speaker 2: I'll keep Keith rad or if they're going to continue
- 48:50Speaker 2: to keep Pat McCarthy, make him, you know, the full
- 48:54Speaker 2: time guy. You know, he does pre post and he
- 48:57Speaker 2: does he does one how he's not there. So I
- 49:00Speaker 2: wonder if they're gonna look for I hate to say,
- 49:03Speaker 2: this's a big time name, some type a name guy.
- 49:07Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what the Mets you're
- 49:09Speaker 2: going to do. So so so we'll see. That'll be
- 49:12Speaker 2: an interesting Everybody will want that job, you know, if
- 49:15Speaker 2: you have a chance to do the Mets of the Yankees, uh,
- 49:19Speaker 2: you know, people will be uh walking over each other
- 49:23Speaker 2: to try to get that job, So that'll be interesting.
- 49:25Speaker 2: I think what they I think what they're probably gonna
- 49:27Speaker 2: do is is keep McCarthy, make you know, make him
- 49:31Speaker 2: the full back up to to to Rad the number
- 49:34Speaker 2: two guy, which for a young guy, I think he's
- 49:37Speaker 2: like twenty seven, twenty eight years old, and you know,
- 49:39Speaker 2: as father as Tom McCarthy, the excellent announcer, I think, uh,
- 49:44Speaker 2: I think, I think that's what's gonna happen.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Tom McCarthy unbelievable. You hear him in March Manage,
- 49:51Speaker 1: you hear him doing phillies, you hear him doing football. Yep,
- 49:56Speaker 1: he's great, He's great. All right, Louis, Well, on that note,
- 50:00Speaker 1: we should play his Islander's go call because everybody knows
- 50:03Speaker 1: New York Yankees win. The Yankees win, but I mean,
- 50:06Speaker 1: you got to hear the Islander go call's it's a classic.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Well, the thing is, I think that's what inspired Yankees win.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Yankees win. What you're going to play now? And I
- 50:18Speaker 2: am shocked that you were able to find that clip.
- 50:21Speaker 2: I can't believe that you found that clip. I didn't
- 50:24Speaker 2: think it existed anywhere, but that was his goal call
- 50:28Speaker 2: that you're going to play now and any islder fan
- 50:32Speaker 2: who listened to WMCA back during those years and that
- 50:36Speaker 2: was this call. But that's yeah, that's great.
- 50:40Speaker 1: John Sterling, you will be missed. Louis Terminella's stick around
- 50:44Speaker 1: for a lot more years. Well, we need we need
- 50:46Speaker 1: you on this earth to do Turbuleau's take for a
- 50:48Speaker 1: long time.
- 50:49Speaker 2: So I plan on being here, buddy.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Thank you, Louis Terminella Terminla's take for May ninth, twenty
- 50:57Speaker 1: twenty sixth. Time is flying and we'll talk to you soon.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Here we'll look up alex Media. John Sterling, you will
- 51:09Speaker 1: be missed.
