- 0:00I'm going to say sissy because that's the correct terminology.
- 0:02But like sissy chested sissy Jordans that just look at you
- 0:07and I just am terrified that if I have vertical pins
- 0:11at home that they can just walk right out and escape.
- 0:14That's a big deal for me.
- 0:15I'm not saying that they got to be, you know, like big chested,
- 0:18like maybe the goat boys like them, but like,
- 0:21those things got to be opened up underneath.
- 0:23And like, when they look at you like, I want them to be like,
- 0:26you don't want to see me in a dark alley.
- 0:28That's where I'm at.
- 0:41Welcome back to the line.

- 1:10maybe some things that you like, maybe some things you'd like to see,
- 1:13anybody you'd like to see on the show, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:16Yeah.
- 1:16Follow us on social media to as well.
- 1:19Silver. Livestock.
- 1:20Newsome livestock.
- 1:23Be looking for our upcoming sales.
- 1:24We got one actually this weekend.
- 1:25806 live sale coming up.
- 1:27So that's going to be a good one here that Logan and his family is putting on.
- 1:32Yeah, we're we're right in the middle of it.
- 1:34Obviously we're right in the middle of sheep buying season.
- 1:37Goat buying season.
- 1:38You know in the throes of it here in Texas we're, you know, kind of right.
- 1:42Just just, you know, right in the middle of it got everything going.
- 1:45And so we've got to sell this weekend.
- 1:46So you know as we kind of talked and we kind of briefly talked last time
- 1:50we were kind of hitting on, you know, selection and what that looks
- 1:54like, what that looks like as far as picking one out for your kid.
- 1:58So we're in the pen.
- 2:02What's the one that hits you?
- 2:03What's the thing that hits you, like first glance?
- 2:06What's the thing that really you
- 2:07gravitate towards whenever you're looking for that one for?
- 2:10For the kids? Yeah.
- 2:11So I thought about that on the way up here
- 2:13at a 4.5 hour drive and tried to space out as the kids were in the back seat.
- 2:17You know, telling each other how much they hate each other
- 2:19and slapping and kicking and fighting.
- 2:22So you tend to kind of zone out.
- 2:24I'm sure you do that as a dad as well. I don't know.
- 2:27No, we I tell them usually what we try to do when we're driving is
- 2:30I tell them three things that I'm I'm proud of them.
- 2:34Okay,
- 2:36maybe I need to start doing that.
- 2:38So I was thinking about
- 2:40this topic on the way up here, and it's like
- 2:43I just try to go back into my in my mind and replay,
- 2:46like when I was at your house on Tuesday and we walked in to a sheep.
- 2:51What?
- 2:52Because it's kind of like second nature to me at this point, right?
- 2:58That's all trying to replay in my mind.
- 2:59Like, what is the one thing that the one thing that I look for first?
- 3:03And, you know, typically there's
- 3:04a, there's a group of lambs in there that are kind of all bunched up together.
- 3:09I think the, the one thing that I look for is body shape,
- 3:13maybe center body and forearm.
- 3:16Those are the two first things
- 3:17that I look at before I say, hey, catch that one right there.
- 3:21Whenever you walk into the pen, like, are you one of those that like as
- 3:26they come into the pen, you know, maybe you're looking at somebody's house
- 3:29and I've struggled with this a little bit,
- 3:32being, you know, in sales mode as a breeder.
- 3:35And also like whenever I go to somebody's house, like,
- 3:38you like to watch them, you know, run around, move around,
- 3:40you know, sometimes maybe they kind of act crazy, like you said, they all bunch up.
- 3:44Would you rather watch those things move,
- 3:47watch them for a little while, and then tell whoever's in the pen
- 3:50with you, whether it's the kids or maybe the breeder?
- 3:52Hey, catch this one, catch that one.
- 3:54Or would you rather that breeder, maybe, you know, hone in on
- 3:58some of the ones that he likes
- 3:59and just start showing them to you, and then you're taking notes on your phone?
- 4:03Yeah.
- 4:03You know, I don't I don't think that it really matters to me.
- 4:07I think whatever that breeder wants to do is fine.
- 4:10If he wants to go in there and start catching them, he or she,
- 4:13and showing them, because
- 4:14typically these things that we're looking at are going to be in an online sell
- 4:17more than likely now or some sale of some sort.
- 4:20So, you know, if they catch them and they catch them in the order
- 4:22they're going to put them in, it's kind of neat to just go through them all and
- 4:26start taking notes as they go, you know, and I, I think you owe that to them.
- 4:31Right. A little bit.
- 4:31Because even if you don't like the sheep, they're still proud of him.
- 4:35And they've put a lot of time effort into them.
- 4:37So let them show them to you and, you know, keep it, keep your comments
- 4:40to yourself right on your phone, you know, hey, that one sucks.
- 4:43Whatever.
- 4:46That's kind of how I feel about it.
- 4:47Yeah, that's kind of how we are, you know,
- 4:49and I and I always, like I said, always kind of, you know,
- 4:52I guess whenever
- 4:53I'm showing sheep at the house and we have customers that are looking,
- 4:56I'll kind of wait for a little while and, you know, I'll let them kind of,
- 4:59you know, watch them walk around.
- 5:01And then if they don't come out initially and say, oh, hey, what's that one?
- 5:04Catch that one, then I'll just kind of start going through,
- 5:06you know, maybe my routine, but I like it.
- 5:08Also whenever I'm at someone's house and I'm, you know, on the purchasing
- 5:13side of it, those guys have been looking at those sheep since they were in the jug.
- 5:17Like, we're in there for a small window.
- 5:19You're looking you're trying to make notes on your phone.
- 5:22You know, hopefully maybe you're going to get a chance to see them again,
- 5:25you know, or go back through them or whatever.
- 5:26But those guys have seen them since they were in the jugs,
- 5:29you know, from the time they did, you know,
- 5:31did tails on them and marked them and you know, all the things
- 5:33they've seen them for 50, 60, 70 days of their life.
- 5:37They know what their moms are like. I want their opinion.
- 5:39I want to see kind of the ones that they like.
- 5:41And, you know, and that's one thing that we talked about in the last episode,
- 5:43you know, having those conversations with those guys, having
- 5:45those conversations with those breeders, because those guys have now
- 5:49if they're like me and I'm sure you're probably the same way, like,
- 5:52I'm very opinionated of some of them and I'm probably a little more passionate of,
- 5:55like, you know, certain ewes and certain new lines or maybe certain books.
- 5:59And I'm like, man, I know that thing's going to feed.
- 6:00I know there's going to be some good stuff there,
- 6:02even if he's the skinny little ratty one or whatever that looks like.
- 6:05But, I mean, it's one of those deals that like having those conversations
- 6:09with those guys and seeing which ones they like.
- 6:11And again, going back to our, you know, that
- 6:13second episode where we're talking about what's your goal?
- 6:16Where are you going?
- 6:17Okay. You know, let's talk about the elephant in the room.
- 6:20Where are we at budget wise?
- 6:21Like let's kind of get a handle and let those guys maybe
- 6:24guide you a little bit of, okay, you know, I think the biggest thing that
- 6:28we've probably tried to do the last week while we've been showing the set
- 6:32that we've got that we're selling on Saturday,
- 6:34that's one of the deeper sets that I feel like we've put together personally.
- 6:37And it can be a deal if you're not fairly advanced
- 6:41and kind of have a good idea of what you're after,
- 6:44it could be a little overwhelming if you walk in there into that,
- 6:47you know, a couple of those pens and just like,
- 6:49you know,
- 6:49maybe aren't quite as advanced in your selection, or maybe you're a newer family
- 6:53and you're trying to learn and trying to get through it, like all of a sudden
- 6:56you're like, oh man, I've got 15 of these things wrote down.
- 7:00Like, which 1 a.m. I going to buy?
- 7:02And so I think that's where you can
- 7:03kind of rely on that breeder of, okay, hey, I started these, I liked these.
- 7:07You set them up, things looked good.
- 7:09I liked this about them. I liked that about them.
- 7:11If I'm going to San Antonio or I'm going to Houston, which one do you like?
- 7:15Maybe give me three numbers.
- 7:16And that's what we try to always kind of like work off of, you know.
- 7:19Okay, hey, that's there's 3 or 4
- 7:21of those there that I like for this show or hey, there's 3 or 4 that I like.
- 7:24Maybe within this particular budget that I could see kind of being there.
- 7:28And, you know, I always slide a little sleeper in the deal whenever,
- 7:33you know, I'm in I'm in sales mode a little bit and I'm like, hey, I like lot
- 7:37one, lot three, lot five.
- 7:38But I really like a lot 11 if that thing stays undervalued,
- 7:42like, I could see that sheep feeding really well
- 7:44and I could see him doing doing well down the road.
- 7:46And so, you know,
- 7:47I guess just to kind of kick back what we talked about,
- 7:49you know, in that last episode where we were talking about,
- 7:52you know, having that dialog with, with breeders and just kind of
- 7:55having interaction and, you know, getting a feel for where you need to be.
- 7:58What he initially what do you you know, I say that center body.
- 8:04Sure.
- 8:05That's probably the first initial thing that I look for.
- 8:07And I know we can go a lot further in depth
- 8:11and go down a rabbit hole and talk about what those terms mean.
- 8:15But I would challenge the audience probably to to look up those terms
- 8:18and get the descriptions for those.
- 8:20But what does Logan Newsome look for when when he walks into him?
- 8:25What's the first thing that catches your eye?
- 8:27Yeah.
- 8:28So I mean, I think that's, you know,
- 8:29obviously two big, big indicators that we're big on body shape and forearm.
- 8:33You know, like I do think that forearm is one of those things that personally
- 8:37I feel like maybe has isn't focused on quite as much as it, it should be.
- 8:43You know, it probably still come maybe a little bit old school.
- 8:45And that's probably, you know, judging team coaches
- 8:47whenever we were eight, nine, ten years old.
- 8:49And they're talking about the indicators of muscle, you know, long term.
- 8:52And so arms still like a big deal that I just probably naturally gravitate
- 8:55towards body shapes big for us.
- 8:58I think at the same time and, you know, we talk and I had this conversation
- 9:01with a guy earlier, we were talking about Texas majors.
- 9:04Those things got to be big hit and they got to be big pinned.
- 9:06And if they are not big hipped and big pinned and just kind of
- 9:10have that just look whenever and it's it's such an easy thing to see.
- 9:15It's one of those deals that it can't be hid, you know, from a show or standpoint
- 9:19or, you know,
- 9:20it doesn't matter if they're propped up or they're loose,
- 9:22like when those things run by their either big hipped or they're not.
- 9:25And, you know, I think a lot of that obviously can relate to,
- 9:29you know, expansion up high and, you know, just what kind of sheep that is.
- 9:33Like, we don't find many of those things that are, you know, big forearm,
- 9:37big ribbed and big hips
- 9:38that are, you know, frail, featured and sissy jawed and all that.
- 9:42I mean, those, those kind of things a lot of times
- 9:44will always go hand in hand.
- 9:45So, you know, we talked last time and like we show in Texas,
- 9:48muscle still drives it like those things have to have muscle.
- 9:51These are market shows.
- 9:52These are, you know, things that we have to have,
- 9:56you know, and really
- 9:57like, you know, we can say in Texas like that's true everywhere.
- 10:00Like these are market shows. These things have to be stout.
- 10:03They have to have muscle.
- 10:04And so, you know, once we kind of start going past that and we start looking
- 10:08at those things, you know, like you said, forearm body shape, big pins.
- 10:13Like you start kind of checking off a few of those boxes of like,
- 10:16hey, that one might be pretty good. Let's catch him.
- 10:19You know?
- 10:19And I guess that's kind of where, where we probably land.
- 10:21And then and then that kind of, you know, the unique part about those things
- 10:26in my mind is those are all things that you can see loose.
- 10:29You can see those sheep, you can analyze all of those those indicators,
- 10:34even if you're in the pen by yourself, even if you're at home watching, you know,
- 10:38hey, this is my project.
- 10:40And you know, that judge said this about him or,
- 10:42you know, do I think this is good or do I think this is bad?
- 10:45That's just reading the livestock.
- 10:46You know, that's just some
- 10:47some evaluation skills there that, you know, you can kind of develop.
- 10:50And those are all things that you don't have to have,
- 10:52you know, the kids setting them up or,
- 10:54you know, the breeder or whatever that looks like.
- 10:56That's just things that like initially,
- 10:58like when they're loose, when they're running around,
- 11:00when they first walk in the pen, boom, boom, boom.
- 11:02Those are the things that we're we're going after.
- 11:04What do you think the what's the one floor
- 11:08that you can't put up with in a, in a sheep or a goat.
- 11:12What's what's the what's the one thing that's like, I'm out.
- 11:15Can't do it. It's done.
- 11:19I don't I don't know that's going to I mean that again.
- 11:22You know we kind of talked about you know,
- 11:24how how far down a rabbit hole like do you want to go like,
- 11:29I'm going to say sissy because that's the correct terminology.
- 11:32But like sissy chested sissy Jordan's that just look at you.
- 11:37And I just am terrified that if I have vertical pens at home
- 11:41that they can just walk right out and escape, that's a big deal for me.
- 11:45Like, I'm not saying that they got to be, you know, like big chested,
- 11:49like maybe the goat boys like them, but like,
- 11:51those things got to be opened up underneath.
- 11:53And like, when they look at you like, I want them to be like,
- 11:57you don't want to see me in a dark alley.
- 11:59That's where I'm at.
- 12:00Kind of remind you?
- 12:01It's it's. It's it's like you.
- 12:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:05I mean,
- 12:07you know, the vertical panel deal.
- 12:09Like, I could see you slipping through some from time to time.
- 12:12Do some. Correct.
- 12:15I think I think for me,
- 12:18I don't know, maybe it changes a little bit.
- 12:22Right.
- 12:22And I think it it to me it changes because this industry changes so fast, so quick.
- 12:28And then we have a different set of judges and evaluators
- 12:30every year that are going to take different animals.
- 12:32And, you know, probably my hot take is, is don't always buy the sheep you like.
- 12:38Sometimes you got to feed the sheep to fit the judge.
- 12:41So, you know, at the end of the spring when you're sitting there
- 12:45pissing and moaning because you got beat, it's probably because you showed a sheep
- 12:49you like.
- 12:49You didn't take the sheep that the judge likes.
- 12:51And like that a lot.
- 12:53And like, that is such a, you know, it's such an easy thing to hedge.
- 12:58But at the same time it's like maybe the hardest thing
- 13:01because if you have like a strong opinion and if, you know,
- 13:05especially I would say the guys that are breeders,
- 13:08you know, and maybe we consider ourselves good at this,
- 13:13like you've got a cond like, and you probably raise the kind that you like.
- 13:16So therefore in turn, you want to show the con you like,
- 13:18you know, all this stuff and that's perfectly fine.
- 13:20Like, I don't,
- 13:21I don't I don't love looking at sheep that maybe I don't particularly like,
- 13:25but it's this game that we play and like, we've got these guys, you know that that.
- 13:31And I'm not saying they're right and I'm not saying they're wrong.
- 13:32Like, but we've got these guys
- 13:33that they prioritize things differently than what we do.
- 13:37They might sit here for,
- 13:38you know, these first couple of things that we've talked about
- 13:39and they're like, well, those guys are dumbasses.
- 13:41Like they don't know what they're talking about.
- 13:43That's cool.
- 13:43Like I have no problem with that.
- 13:44But if you kind of, you know, do some do your homework
- 13:49a little and you're educated on who it is,
- 13:50or maybe you've showed to them, that's always been the deal that I that
- 13:53where I'm at on like guys that we show to I don't care if they like the kind that I
- 13:57that I've got, I don't care if they don't like them.
- 13:59And I really don't care that first time if we win or lose,
- 14:02I just want the next time we show to them for there to be some consistency
- 14:06with what they did the last time.
- 14:08Because if I got beat the first time, I'm going to take notes.
- 14:11I'd be like, okay, so and so liked them like this.
- 14:14Maybe I don't necessarily agree with him 100%, but I saw what he was doing.
- 14:18I understood it, okay, I'm going to go home and like next time
- 14:22we've got him at this show or that show, I'm going to be ready.
- 14:25And so that's the thing that, you know, wrapping into that, you know, difference.
- 14:30And you know, with that
- 14:31with different evaluators and like what you said like, yeah, you.
- 14:34Take notes.
- 14:35You know, I don't I don't do this.
- 14:38But I still remember when I was a kid and we would haul the that's
- 14:41when LA was big and we were hauling to, you know, 5060 jackpots a year.
- 14:46And I still remember my mom had a little like book.
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:51She would write all the placings down and she would write down
- 14:54what the judges like didn't like.
- 14:56And we had all that in a book. Yeah.
- 14:58To watch. Absolutely.
- 14:59So it's kind of neat.
- 15:01So when we went to selecting stuff later on, we kind of knew what to hall to.
- 15:05Well, and I think the unique part about today's world as compared
- 15:08to what we were doing back then, you know, we're talking, you know, late
- 15:1190s, early 2000, like all you have to do is jump on Facebook, YouTube,
- 15:18you know, ringside, like, I mean, a lot of these shows are,
- 15:21you know, filmed and, you know, products and rewatch it, like,
- 15:24hear what those guys say, listen to them like, hey, every time that Conor
- 15:28Brew judges, man, like he keeps saying these words like,
- 15:31I need to figure out
- 15:31what he's saying about that because he's doing my county show or,
- 15:34you know, Steve is doing this
- 15:36like he keeps talking about this kind that he likes, that he likes.
- 15:39I mean, we have such a unique disposal of tools available for, for where
- 15:45we're at in today's, you know, in today's game
- 15:47as compared to like what you talked about, you know, like,
- 15:49all right, we're gonna drive across the country.
- 15:51We have to show this guy we don't know what he really likes.
- 15:53Like, have you ever heard of him?
- 15:55I mean, how many times you heard that?
- 15:56Have you heard of this guy? Like, I don't have any idea who he is, you know?
- 15:59And you go show it to him.
- 16:00You're like, oh, he is good or he's bad or, you know, whatever that looks like.
- 16:03But yeah, I mean, kind of do your homework.
- 16:05I mean, and, and I knew that I was going to bring this up at some point.
- 16:09And it's challenging.
- 16:10And I know there's probably going to be some of my buddies that, you know, say
- 16:13that I'm a little bit full of it, but I've always tried whenever we jackpot
- 16:17and those guys and I know we're kind of going down the,
- 16:19you know, the, the judge deal.
- 16:20But I think it's important whenever we go in jackpot and we show to these guys,
- 16:26I don't care at all
- 16:28what they're saying or how we place.
- 16:32I just I just want to be like,
- 16:36I want to see what our stock looks like out in the ring and in a big ring.
- 16:41I want to see what they look like, and I want to see what they
- 16:42what we can kind of go home with.
- 16:44And then I also want to see, okay, why he didn't like this one
- 16:49or why he didn't like that one, or maybe why he did like that one, you know.
- 16:52And we got along very, very well that day.
- 16:53But I don't necessarily care about the placing like it's just a scrimmage.
- 16:58Like we all, you know, go to these jackpots
- 17:00and like you want to win and you want to be successful.
- 17:02But like at the end of the day
- 17:03you're just kind of a bunch of scrimmages leading up to this one big game.
- 17:06And so we've always tried to like kind of push the results
- 17:11away, you know, and focus more on, hey, what did that thing look like?
- 17:15How do I need to change some stuff whenever I get home?
- 17:17What can the kids do better?
- 17:19Show in wise, like all the different, you know, little things
- 17:22and just be very objective with it instead of leaving their kick in the
- 17:25bucket like, man, that got put me third and those two in front of me were awful.
- 17:29And so we've always kind of tried to do that like preseason.
- 17:32Yeah like preseason
- 17:33like and just kind of look at it from that standpoint and be like, okay,
- 17:36this is what I got to do.
- 17:37I know that I'm showing down the road and I know
- 17:39kind of what I need to do and how I need to make sure things,
- 17:41you know, continue to evolve and move forward this way.
- 17:43But at the same time.
- 17:45Hey, that guy kept saying that he didn't like my sheep or my goat because of this.
- 17:50I need to kind of file that away and remember,
- 17:52because the next time I showed to him, I want to have one of those.
- 17:54So we talked about, you know, obviously getting too far on the judges.
- 18:00We talked about initial selection. Right.
- 18:02And we both agreed that center body forearm is an initial call.
- 18:07We look at we talked about something that, you know, you had stated that
- 18:13your one absolute turnoff is going to be,
- 18:17you know, sissy chested and sissy John
- 18:21knows chest with to him something like that.
- 18:23I think to me
- 18:26it absolutely turned off to me is, you know, hind legs.
- 18:29Yeah.
- 18:29I mean if he's got a terrible hind leg on it,
- 18:32I'm out and we can look that in a million different ways.
- 18:36But to me, if I'm looking at them behind them and their hawks bow out, I'm out.
- 18:41I'm done from that that point forward so well.
- 18:44And I think that obviously goes into I shouldn't say maybe obviously.
- 18:48But you know, something that we've probably and we've probably all done it.
- 18:50We've made that mistake like, oh, maybe if I trim his feet or, you know,
- 18:54maybe if I, you know, take him slow or, you know, whatever that looks like.
- 18:57It's one of those things structurally.
- 19:00And that's why, you know, you listen to livestock judging one on one.
- 19:03And, you know, guys will preach structure just so much like a feed bucket
- 19:06and exercise program doesn't change it, right.
- 19:09You know, like it's one of those deals like,
- 19:11you know, sometimes like, hey, if I could, you know, get a little extra
- 19:14bark on that one, I can maybe make him look a little wider than he is or,
- 19:18hey, if I really, really treadmill, I can make that one stifle,
- 19:21you know, a little bubbly or,
- 19:22and, you know, a little more shape or, you know, whatever that looks like.
- 19:25Hind leg structure floors
- 19:28can't.
- 19:29Change it.
- 19:29And always say you can't polish a turd and you can.
- 19:31Fact I've never tried.
- 19:36That's you know, you can polish in stone to a high shine,
- 19:38polish some stuff, maybe into a diamond, but definitely.
- 19:41Not a turd.
- 19:42Okay, so we're in the we're in the we're in the pen still.
- 19:46We're, we're we're analyzing these things.
- 19:49You know guys,
- 19:50maybe maybe they've given us a chance to watch them kind of move around
- 19:54the big forearmed one that's big center body, big flat hip.
- 19:58We got him pulled out.
- 19:59We got him pulled out and set up.
- 20:01What are we looking at now? Now we set up.
- 20:03What are we looking at now.
- 20:04So I'm in I guess
- 20:08maybe I'm a little, you know, prototypical Texan, I guess maybe, you know,
- 20:13kind of grew up in that era, maybe pop a K just kind of beat it into my head.
- 20:17Then things got a touch good.
- 20:19Like if they don't touch, good if they're not crispy, hard.
- 20:25Shapely, I just and, you know, going
- 20:28back to that deal, other guys can disagree and that's perfectly fine.
- 20:31But like,
- 20:32we like those things to touch big and we like them to touch shapely and firm.
- 20:36And again,
- 20:38you know, that's kind of going back to some of those indicators of muscle.
- 20:41Like we talked about that kind of being, you know, still the focal point.
- 20:44Like if they're big rolled up back, if their edges are big,
- 20:48if they're loins big, like those things have muscle.
- 20:51And, you know,
- 20:51a lot of times the unique part is you can you can see it even before you touch it.
- 20:55You know, the ones that are little butterfly backed and rolled up.
- 20:58And then you touch them and they're like, oh man, that one handles good.
- 21:01Yeah.
- 21:02So and I think to me that, that me too because I always.
- 21:08Kyle Smithwick said this one time he said you know the backs.
- 21:12The first thing that that judge is going to evaluate.
- 21:14I mean, obviously he's going to see him
- 21:16walk in the ring, but they're going to touch.
- 21:18That's how in 90% of our shows in Texas, right?
- 21:21Sure, if you're going to get a pool, it's going to be on the handle.
- 21:24And that's when we're going to know you're going to go through the scale,
- 21:26and you're probably going to be in the top end to make the sale. Yep.
- 21:29Potentially make the sale. Yeah.
- 21:30They've got to handle
- 21:31they've got to have some one edge shape to them that's big to me.
- 21:34I love a big one edge. And she
- 21:37but I'm with you on that handle.
- 21:40Touch quality I think is really important.
- 21:42Then I think that's when you start sprinkling
- 21:44in some of the other stuff, like, you know, bled and died.
- 21:48Is it is it short enough?
- 21:49Is this chess good enough?
- 21:51Is this rear flying good enough?
- 21:53That's when you start kind of throwing in those other things.
- 21:55But you know, center body, forearm touch, side view shape,
- 22:01those are things that I'm going to initially sought
- 22:04to get that one to the top before I start making a commit
- 22:07of whether I want to, to purchase this animal or not.
- 22:10Yeah. And I think you said it. You know, I think that's probably the biggest key.
- 22:12Like as we talk about this, you know, we kind of, you know, offer some sort of,
- 22:16you know, educational tidbits for people that,
- 22:18you know, might be new or or wanting to learn or get better or just,
- 22:22you know, driving down the road and have absolutely nothing else to do.
- 22:25But if you think about it like it is, like we've seen it
- 22:29countless times and, you know, like maybe the, you know, some of the
- 22:32some of the Midwest shows might vary in this just a little bit.
- 22:35But you think about, like our Texas major show scene
- 22:37and you think about cell spots and kids making the sale.
- 22:40And at the end of the day, like, for
- 22:44hell, I would say all of us, like, that's still the goal.
- 22:46Like, you want to get pain on their back, right?
- 22:48And yes, you know, a judge when they walk in
- 22:5280, walk in a class, maybe he does pull five.
- 22:55Well, there's still you know, let's take Houston for instance.
- 22:58There's still 13 sale spots.
- 22:59You know, that we're all fighting for. Right.
- 23:01And so we stack those things in rear view.
- 23:04And like you said, they go to handling them.
- 23:06And if those sayings are squishy or handle
- 23:09like a nerve football
- 23:12or they're this fight like it's not going to matter.
- 23:15Like it's not like they could have the biggest, whitest legs, you know,
- 23:19kid could do a killer good job showing like a lot of different things.
- 23:21But like they stack them in there for a reason, like,
- 23:24and they go to handle them.
- 23:25And so you, you might have multiple flaws with that sheet.
- 23:29Maybe.
- 23:30Maybe, you know, maybe he's a, you know, a little chubby over his ribs,
- 23:33maybe his necks a little short, you know, maybe in motion.
- 23:36His hip and hind leg doesn't hinge and work the right way.
- 23:38But if we'll stack those things in and you get that good first, handle him
- 23:44sometimes, like you can kind of slip in there
- 23:46and get you a cell spot
- 23:47with one that you're just kind of like, oh, glad we got that one dotted.
- 23:50Like, because, you know, I mean, we've all been there.
- 23:52Like we all try to chase around and buy the great ones.
- 23:55And you know, we're all trying to find the one that will win.
- 23:56But like sometimes at the end of the day, if we're being realistic,
- 23:59you know, you kind of get out there in some of those classes and you're like,
- 24:02dude, there was 15 in there that were good.
- 24:05I'm just glad that I was 16 and I got a cell check.
- 24:07You know, I remember talking to my crew after Houston this year,
- 24:12and I, we took a chance on some sheep last year that we had bought
- 24:15and put it into different people's hands that were, you know, cooler looking.
- 24:20The shallow were cooler looking ones that run uphill
- 24:23and get into that big room somewhere like Houston.
- 24:26I mean, get your teeth kicked in.
- 24:28And I told my career where I said we were never
- 24:31not buying sheep again that don't have muscle. Yep.
- 24:34Yeah.
- 24:35We're going to put that foremost and up front because
- 24:38like you said, at the worst we come out of there with a sale slot.
- 24:42Absolutely not winning.
- 24:44But we're going to come out of there with the sale slot and we can save face.
- 24:47Absolutely. Yeah.
- 24:49You know me, I've been on this golf cake here, you know.
- 24:51Yeah. We can get up, up and down.
- 24:5342 years later right.
- 24:55Look at you.
- 24:55Oh my goodness.
- 24:57You read that somewhere.
- 24:58I did not read that.
- 25:00Holy cow. Let's play a lot of golf and that.
- 25:02And that's the deal.
- 25:03And I mean like we talk about it like save face, but also for what we're,
- 25:07you know, doing in the you know again, we're probably going to, you know,
- 25:10reference the Texas, you know, major show seen a lot because it's obviously,
- 25:13you know our bread and butter but like save face get a cell check.
- 25:17Right. You know like I mean we're all in the same boat.
- 25:20Like that helps.
- 25:21That helps us play next year
- 25:22like that lets us put the coins in, you know, and let the game continue.
- 25:25Now, we're not saying go out there and find the ugliest pin that is
- 25:30in there.
- 25:31It's not what we're saying.
- 25:32So some that are just too much. Yeah.
- 25:35And with that being said, so like, you know, like you said okay.
- 25:37So we're you know, we've found this, you know,
- 25:39we found a handful of them, maybe we've sorted them into a pin,
- 25:41you know, and, and I think as we kind of talk about that,
- 25:44if you, if you go to people's house and you know, you're looking
- 25:47and maybe this doesn't necessarily work great like in a, in a live sale situation,
- 25:52but we try to do it a lot like the way that our stuff set up.
- 25:55I always tell people like, hey,
- 25:56if you want to sort a few of these over and look at them later amongst, you know,
- 25:59kind of the ones you like, like it's just sort and stock like, let's do it.
- 26:02And so let's say that, you know, we've got 6 or 8 of these things
- 26:06that we've got sorted over there. Big armed.
- 26:09They're big bodied, they handle good.
- 26:11We've set them up and they handle good. And their pin bones are big.
- 26:14Like they've checked a lot of the boxes. Right?
- 26:15I mean, kind of a pretty good one so far.
- 26:18Okay. Bells and whistles. We've got them.
- 26:21We've got them turned sideways.
- 26:22And I. Think. Ship setting them up. Where are we at?
- 26:25I think the bells and whistles is what separates us from
- 26:29$3,500 sheet to a 15 or $20,000.
- 26:34Would you agree with that?
- 26:34I would agree, I would agree, and I think that's what you know,
- 26:38and I think, you know, not to deter anyone, you know, from buying them
- 26:42because I think, I think there's two things that.
- 26:44Yes, absolutely.
- 26:45The, the high end pieces, the intangibles that are hard to make, the,
- 26:48the things that make that animal unique and no different than, you know,
- 26:52the things that make a painting unique or, you know, a vintage book
- 26:56or anything else.
- 26:57Like there are things about each particular one, you know,
- 27:01that might set that one apart from his contemporaries.
- 27:04And that's where you know, that one all of a sudden, you know, has more value.
- 27:09Now that value is determined by the market.
- 27:13A lot of times, you know, guys bidding online, guys buying in a lot of sale.
- 27:17And I think we also have to, you know, like kind of keep in the back of our mind
- 27:21and remember like that could also just be two guys that decided,
- 27:25hey I want that one. Right?
- 27:27I want that one bad.
- 27:28Like I believe the term is pissing contest.
- 27:31Where two fools met.
- 27:32Yep. There you go.
- 27:33And you know, so like those two guys, I mean, look across the aisle and say,
- 27:38let's get it on.
- 27:39And and, you know, that might be the difference in,
- 27:42you know, one bringing X amount and bringing, you know, three x amount.
- 27:46So but so we've got those things
- 27:49you know, we've got we've got them turned sideways.
- 27:50What what are if we're if we're going to hit on,
- 27:52you know, 1 or 2 of those things or, you know, maybe just doesn't have to,
- 27:55you know, obviously limit it.
- 27:56But bells and whistles, what are they.
- 27:59Bells and whistles to me.
- 28:00You know, this is a hot topic right now.
- 28:03But they got enough fur on their legs.
- 28:06And does that fur match their foot size?
- 28:08Sure. I think that's key to right.
- 28:10There's some furry ones out there that are dime footed.
- 28:13Yeah. Look like a baby deer.
- 28:15Yeah I can't stand that.
- 28:18But fur.
- 28:19Sure.
- 28:20I think a chest, the shallowness of their chest.
- 28:24You know, how far is that thing shoved up in their sternum?
- 28:27Shoved up in them?
- 28:29And then probably,
- 28:31you know, probably they're coloring, right?
- 28:34I hate to say that, too, but, you know, if they've got all those things we just
- 28:38talked about and they're white featured on top of it,
- 28:42that's probably going to set you apart, right? Well, it is.
- 28:44And you know, it's not that it's a deal necessarily.
- 28:48And I see this all the time online candy.
- 28:50You can't eat shag or you know like color shouldn't matter.
- 28:54And I'm not arguing with that.
- 28:56But at the end of the day, we're also trying to separate ourselves.
- 29:0080 sheep walk into the class at San Antonio.
- 29:02Houston.
- 29:03Like, you got to think about the things that are going to make you different, like
- 29:07make that judge actually just give you that extra,
- 29:11like look to see all of those things that we checked off.
- 29:14Big arm, big body, you know, big pin bones, like all that stuff.
- 29:17And like I find it a little bit comical.
- 29:20And honestly, I think it just doesn't make any sense.
- 29:22Like those judges aren't sorting them on leg hair or fuzz,
- 29:29but it might have been something that like gravitate towards.
- 29:32And it does.
- 29:33It gives them like a good look, like they stand out, you know, green shavings
- 29:37at Houston, bright lights, and you got one that's just snow white colored.
- 29:40Like they're going to pop, like they're going to look.
- 29:42And so it might just be a deal that makes them look, you know,
- 29:45hey, I need to I need to look at that thing is pretty cool.
- 29:47Looks good moving around, whatever the case may be.
- 29:49And so it's not a I guarantee if you if you we took a panel and we, you know,
- 29:54we pulled the best 100 evaluators and we stuck them all in a room.
- 29:59Hey, where do you prioritize leg hair?
- 30:02None of them are even going to have it on.
- 30:04It's just a, you know, it's just a thing that kind of is a part of our deal
- 30:08right now. And it's just something that might kind of give you, you know.
- 30:10It's an indicator. Indicator. Yeah.
- 30:12To me, it's an indicator that that that animal has been properly cared for.
- 30:16Sure. Absolutely agree with that 1,000%.
- 30:19You know, they polished the chrome on this
- 30:22before they went to the car show that they've taken the time, the effort.
- 30:25It's there. Yeah. That's just an indicator.
- 30:28Yeah absolutely.
- 30:29And it is it's it's something that
- 30:30you know I think without question I mean we've all seen it.
- 30:32We've all spent
- 30:33the time, you know, you know doing legs or you know, whatever that looks like.
- 30:37But yeah, it you see that kid out there that you know, their leg
- 30:41is big and pretty and groomed well and it's like, hey,
- 30:43that kid's probably been busting his tail, like making that all look good.
- 30:46Like, you know.
- 30:47And I think we're to the point now to that, that
- 30:51the really obnoxiously haired ones.
- 30:54Yeah. There.
- 30:55No, no, it's almost too much.
- 30:57But the ones you see, that's nice. It's fit.
- 31:00It's been trimmed.
- 31:01Cleaned up good. Looks good. Well.
- 31:03And where the industry is at from a, you know, from
- 31:05especially I mean and I know we're obviously talking.
- 31:08Well hey let's be honest.
- 31:09Like the goat world's kind of following the same deal that,
- 31:11you know, we probably did 5 or 6 years ago in the sheep.
- 31:14You know, as far as some of those things, breeders, you know,
- 31:17maybe paying a little more attention and some of those things,
- 31:19you know, being a little hairy or legged or, or whatever.
- 31:22But I think if you sit back and like,
- 31:25especially in the sheep side, everybody's made them fuzzy.
- 31:29It's just kind of a wash right now, you know,
- 31:31like on the good ones, like they're all like their Hampshire influence,
- 31:35especially if it's tended to, well, long term.
- 31:38Now we have them and, you know, they're, they're, you know, scattered everywhere.
- 31:43I know every breeder has them like, hey, that one's not real fuzzy right
- 31:46now, but like, hey, he's out of this and this and this.
- 31:49Like, there's plenty of they're going to get fuzzy, like, go home,
- 31:52take care of it, rinse and blow legs, spend some time on it.
- 31:55And so it just becomes a hey, as long as you tend to it, it's going to be fun.
- 32:00I think it's in a little bit environment driven.
- 32:03I take that into account when I'm selecting, like
- 32:07if I'm at my place in Texas or years in the Panhandle or
- 32:14nests right up the road kind of in between us, right?
- 32:17Let's just say, let's just say the western half of Texas, right?
- 32:20And we look at those baby lambs, they're probably not going to be
- 32:23as fuzzy as babies as the ones you look at in the Iowa.
- 32:26Sure. Yeah.
- 32:28Yeah. But I still don't question it.
- 32:30You know, I've had people come to my house and they go,
- 32:33I think that thing's going to be hairy enough.
- 32:34Well, hell yeah, he's going to be hairy enough.
- 32:36Yeah, absolutely. It's where we live, right.
- 32:38Well, it's the same way, like I'm sure.
- 32:40And at some point I know we'll probably have, like,
- 32:41you know, somebody that's a little more like,
- 32:44show cattle, you know, world like those guys would probably, you know,
- 32:47are probably like, kind of giggling at this, like the calves that come out
- 32:50of, you know, off some ranch in South Dakota,
- 32:53you know, versus the ones that come out of some place in Abilene.
- 32:56You know, it's probably like, yeah, there's going to be a little difference
- 32:58until but then they all show up, they all show it before it were.
- 33:01And it's like Darrell Harry.
- 33:03So okay.
- 33:04So yeah, we kind of went on that spill.
- 33:07And I know that's obviously a topic that we're going to continue and hit on.
- 33:10You know, maybe it's kind of been a little bit of a hot topic.
- 33:13Said anything
- 33:14that we're actually shooting this podcast and Hallowed Grounds right now.
- 33:19We are we are.
- 33:21I actually sent a Snapchat out when I walked in.
- 33:23And like, I don't actually know.
- 33:24I know this is a boardroom, but like all these books around,
- 33:26like immediately, as soon as I walked in, like, I felt a little smarter.
- 33:31Yeah. Like.
- 33:32We're shooting this at the home of champions, Texas Tech University.
- 33:36That's right.
- 33:36Yep, yep. Big big big shout.
- 33:38Yeah. Big shout out to the Red Raiders
- 33:41I guess
- 33:42Doctor Sam Jackson kind of got us the hook up in here.
- 33:45Yeah.
- 33:46I told somebody Wendy Scott was up here and she kind of helped us
- 33:49hook some of this stuff up.
- 33:50And I said, I don't know many ag colleges in the US where you can just walk in,
- 33:55walk up, peak your head in as they're setting it.
- 33:58Doctor Jackson in several other setting, having a board meeting.
- 34:01And I said.
- 34:01I believe they were interviewing applicants when you actually.
- 34:04And I said, yeah, hey, you boys have an important meeting.
- 34:07And they said, yeah, but they said, we'll. Be done.
- 34:10Kindly leaves her.
- 34:12More than welcome to have this when we're done.
- 34:14So cool. Cool to be back. Both tech grads.
- 34:17Yeah that that was a that was a very like whenever
- 34:20we had the opportunity to do this and we're going to hopefully,
- 34:23you know, have a chance to do some other stuff around Lubbock.
- 34:25But like just to I guess have, you know, them willing to.
- 34:30Yeah.
- 34:31I mean, we're obviously just kind of getting started in this
- 34:33and it's like, oh yeah, you want to do that? Yeah.
- 34:34Oh, here's the boardroom that we do everything in okay.
- 34:36So gut instinct versus checklist thinking yeah.
- 34:39Hang on I want to hit on one thing because we talked about this.
- 34:41And I think this can sometimes be a little bit harder maybe for folks that aren't
- 34:49I'm going to
- 34:50use the term advanced, but let's just say experienced chest.
- 34:55You hit on that while ago we talked about the bells and whistles.
- 34:58Okay.
- 34:59Chest, rear flying, chest to flank ratio, whatever you want to call it,
- 35:04that silhouette that those animals can give us from the side.
- 35:09Tell me why you think that matters.
- 35:12And where it kind of lands, as far as you know.
- 35:16Is that the difference in you being first or third, or is it just like, you know,
- 35:21kind of like the leg we'll do like, oh, hey, looks cool.
- 35:24Yeah.
- 35:25I think that to me that's what separates.
- 35:31I don't know if this may need to be edited.
- 35:34That's what separates it there between a trader sheep.
- 35:39And a sheep that I'm probably going to keep to try to win a major stock show.
- 35:44Yeah. Honestly. Yeah.
- 35:46Because I know if we've got the muscle
- 35:47in the center body and all those things, I'm going.
- 35:49To get all those things that we checked on. Yeah.
- 35:50I'm going to get up there probably in the top ten.
- 35:53But that's what we're going to start
- 35:54separating those things I don't know, matter what evaluator it is.
- 35:58You know the chest of flank ratio.
- 36:01Right.
- 36:02I think that's what separates probably a nice sheet
- 36:06to to a really good one.
- 36:08Well he's a feed throughout the year too right.
- 36:12I think those type of sheep are just easier to maintain and manage
- 36:15throughout the year. Right.
- 36:17I think that's absolutely yeah I mean, I think it kind of goes back.
- 36:20I think it can kind of be twofold there.
- 36:22Those ones that are like and you know,
- 36:26let's say the guys that are, you know, raising stalkers and, you know,
- 36:30real world stuff and, you know, the Flint Hills of Nebraska
- 36:34are not going to say, like, chest doesn't matter.
- 36:38And I would probably agree with them in that scenario.
- 36:40But like let's talk about flank like because we talked about them
- 36:43being big ribbed. Right.
- 36:44So you know those ones that are like big ribbed and swoopy bellied
- 36:49like I mean soggy flanked whatever you want to call it.
- 36:52Like those are going to be practical.
- 36:54Like so we're talking real world and you know, show Showtime.
- 36:58Those are going to be practical.
- 36:59Like maybe a little easier fleshing a little easier doing like maturity
- 37:03could be a little better on them instead of those ones that like
- 37:05maybe like, well, we kind of grew up showing like there's
- 37:07actually a picture in your office of like this blue one.
- 37:11And man, that thing was like,
- 37:14I bet he handled.
- 37:15Really good.
- 37:15I bet he I bet he handled incredible.
- 37:18Oh, I bet it was so good.
- 37:20But like, so we're talking about, you know, chest and flank and like
- 37:23I think the chest deal comes in to play
- 37:26maybe more of a uniqueness.
- 37:30Because I find myself sometimes when I'm evaluating
- 37:33if they are big, big center bodied
- 37:36and by no means do I like them deep.
- 37:39But like, sometimes, maybe if they're proportional
- 37:43and their underlying, you can be like, hey, I'm going to let that one slide.
- 37:46I know he's not as shallow and freaky maybe up there in terms of his chest
- 37:51and his sternum and all that.
- 37:52But like, that thing's rib cage is built like a 55 gallon drum.
- 37:55So while we want them big ribbed in order to put everything,
- 37:58you know, stack everything up on top, you know, it's kind of on those deals.
- 38:02Like, I get it.
- 38:03Especially if, like, now, if the one that's sitting right there
- 38:06and the one that we're
- 38:06trying to make a call on is shallower and still big, big rib too.
- 38:10Okay. No brainer.
- 38:11We're going to go with that one.
- 38:12But if it's one of those deals that maybe he's a little more closed off
- 38:15and like he's shallow but like, hey, that one's a little flatter
- 38:18in terms of his for rib.
- 38:19Like he offers us kind of that real, real good two dimensional look,
- 38:23but like he kind of step in behind him or you step in that three quarter
- 38:26like, man, that one just ain't pulled apart enough.
- 38:27That's whenever you know, the chest deal to me has always kind of been like,
- 38:32all right we got to pay attention to it.
- 38:33But like, we can't get so lost in making them shallow that we lose.
- 38:38You know, maybe, maybe what we're actually trying to chase as far.
- 38:42As and I think too, with that, with the soggy rear flank in them,
- 38:45you know, you can feed probably a massive amount of rear flank into them.
- 38:49And that's going to give them
- 38:49the appearance that they are shallower chested.
- 38:51Sure. Absolutely.
- 38:52Absolutely. Hate to say it, you can fool a lot of evaluators.
- 38:55Absolutely.
- 38:55Get on the mic and say, oh, this thing is so shallow.
- 38:58Yeah. No, I just fed a really big rear flanking.
- 39:00Yeah. He's he's swoopy belly. That's really all he is. You drenched him.
- 39:03You know he got seven guns as well and seven guns of water
- 39:07right before you walked in.
- 39:08I mean, yeah, you can you can change those things, you know.
- 39:11And so yeah.
- 39:11So that's so but but definitely like going,
- 39:14you know, kind of going back to what we talked about
- 39:16because again, we've checked, you know,
- 39:18maybe 4 or 5 of those big, big indicators we absolutely have to have.
- 39:22And now we're kind of talking about, you know, those things that are
- 39:25you know, they're the bells and whistles.
- 39:26They're the things that might highlight.
- 39:27And they're the ones that might make some things,
- 39:29you know, stand out and, you know, look different and, and all that.
- 39:34So price pressure, can we talk about that?
- 39:38Hang on.
- 39:38We got to hit on one thing because it's something that I think we
- 39:40we see it in different stages and we see it because we it
- 39:44depends on who's evaluating watching those sheep in motion.
- 39:49Okay.
- 39:49So we've talked about what those things look like.
- 39:52We've checked all the boxes.
- 39:53We've found the ones with the bells and whistles okay.
- 39:56Where are you at on I know, I know your hip and hind leg no doubt.
- 40:00Got to be good.
- 40:01Where are we at on those things moving around the ring?
- 40:05Kind of, you know, maybe some indicators because we've kind of checked
- 40:08the structural correctness box.
- 40:10I feel like for what we've talked about, you know, we talked about them
- 40:13having to be, you know, wide and open up square underneath hip and hind legs.
- 40:17Got to be right.
- 40:17So really from a structure standpoint we're pretty good.
- 40:20You know on this on this animal we've kind of all built up in our mind.
- 40:23And hopefully our listeners are driving down the road, you know,
- 40:24thinking, man, I'm going to go find me one of those at Logan or Sam Sales.
- 40:29But where are we at on those things like moving?
- 40:31You know, we get into that deal where sometimes guys are like,
- 40:34they get to the top five or let's, let's say they get to the top ten.
- 40:38All right, let's walk them.
- 40:39And then they place one and then they get to the top nine.
- 40:41All right. Let's walk them. And then they place one.
- 40:43You know we continue to do it.
- 40:44And they and you know they they they just kind of one in time.
- 40:47But we continue to walk walk, walk. It's a little track meet.
- 40:49And you get some guys that always say they walked them in and walked them out.
- 40:52Where, where, where do you land on that.
- 40:54Where do you find. And I know we're in.
- 40:56You know, it kind of goes back to the evaluator, but like, where's
- 40:59maybe some happy ground that you can just kind of feel comfortable
- 41:02with, like where we're sitting right here today and you know, we know
- 41:05who's judging one of our major stock shows.
- 41:08Yeah, I feel like that I'll take the happy medium on that.
- 41:13Right.
- 41:14I obviously I want to watch them move around the pin when I'm selecting them.
- 41:18Do they do they hold their head carriage up when you let them go?
- 41:22You know, I don't want that one that's dead.
- 41:24And its head just kind of hangs there like a limp noodle, you know,
- 41:27as ears are down, as heads down, blades come up above his chin.
- 41:32That kind of deal, you know, that's going to hinder me, so to speak.
- 41:37Does he kind of float around when you let him go?
- 41:39You know, nothings just too like rigid or
- 41:43joints aren't too rigid or nasty.
- 41:46Does he hold his head carriage up a little bit? Does he?
- 41:48Does he kind of throw his head up and look at you? I think that's important.
- 41:51And I think it's really important for those people listening in us to
- 41:54with still young kids. Absolutely huge deal.
- 41:57You know, those short neck down headed ones.
- 42:01Our kids aren't going to be able to make a move right in the ring and look enough.
- 42:04And that's a lesson that I've learned the hard way.
- 42:07Absolutely.
- 42:07And that's something we still struggle with even in the Silver's household, is
- 42:12we come home every time and I say we don't leave good enough.
- 42:15We're not leading good enough. We got to lead better.
- 42:17We got to lead better.
- 42:18And I'm always harping on my kids about that.
- 42:20But at the same time I'm like, you know, dad probably didn't do enough,
- 42:24good enough job selecting the animal there moves in good.
- 42:27Moves in good and runs. Yeah.
- 42:28And you know, tidbit there for listeners that want to, you know,
- 42:32if you'll follow Sam on Snapchat, he's always got some unique ways
- 42:34to make those sheep walk down the road, the road there.
- 42:39So feel free to,
- 42:40you know, hit him up and see if he can give you any insight on that.
- 42:43Probably not something we can put on line.
- 42:46Yeah, I'm kind of the same way. Like now.
- 42:48I mean, I, I want those things to move good.
- 42:51We spent we were the same way.
- 42:53Like we walk up and down the road, you know when kids are practicing,
- 42:57I tell them get in the yard and it's usually get in the yard.
- 43:01And then, you know, we walk down the road and that's kind of how we spend our time,
- 43:03you know, hand walking and whatever.
- 43:05And you know, it always it always ends with one of them fighting or crying.
- 43:09I mean, that's just that's just how it is.
- 43:10But like, it, it is it's what we do.
- 43:13But like, I think the biggest thing for me as far as
- 43:17watching those things in motion again,
- 43:19you know, we talked about it like I'm going to study their hip and hind leg.
- 43:22I'm also like, you know, full time Shepherd.
- 43:26Right?
- 43:26So like I get to see those things typically at home, whether we're sorting
- 43:30ewes, looking at bugs, watching the babies, kids are at school.
- 43:34Like I kind of kind of evaluate a lot of stuff, you know, like a good buddy.
- 43:38You know, Robert Ashley would always talk about
- 43:40putting sitting on a bucket, you know, and just watching the sheep.
- 43:43And I think that's a that's a good indicator
- 43:45of like probably where I land, whether it's whenever
- 43:48I'm buying or whether I'm, you know, evaluating a show.
- 43:50Like I want to study some like things.
- 43:52But I also just kind of want to see what those things look like
- 43:54naturally, like just because all the same things kind of fit.
- 43:57This thing's fit. Does it work?
- 43:59Does it balance, you know, structurally, is there spine flat?
- 44:03You know, like that's that's probably I'm probably not as big on oh my gosh.
- 44:06They got to you know run up hill and you know be geeky and you know all that.
- 44:11And I'm not saying that's that's wrong.
- 44:12But I'm more like I want to see them things flat spine.
- 44:15I don't want to see them handle their hip and hind leg the way they're supposed to.
- 44:18That's just and I think if you do that, you can find
- 44:21good middle ground no matter who's judging.
- 44:24Yeah, I can't wait to having that on evaluators and evaluation.
- 44:30Plenty of soap boxes there.
- 44:32So now you've made those points.
- 44:35Can we get to gut instinct versus checklist thinking.
- 44:39Yeah I got a theory. I've got my own.
- 44:41So would you like me to.
- 44:42Would you like me to think about it from a
- 44:46buying perspective.
- 44:47Or do you like to me to think about it from an evaluation perspective.
- 44:50By oh, okay.
- 44:54Gut instinct.
- 44:57Yeah.
- 44:57I'm a bad gut instinct buyer.
- 45:00Like they just.
- 45:01And I'm probably a little bit like that also as an evaluator,
- 45:05man, when they freaking hit me, they just hit me like.
- 45:08And I'm just like, there's no going back.
- 45:10And I know that, like, you know, I'm probably just going to buy this thing
- 45:14no matter what he costs.
- 45:15And then I'm going to like, you know,
- 45:17figure out if I got any copper wire that I can sell at home or something.
- 45:21You know, just I mean, I'm just going all in.
- 45:24I'm pushing the chips in, and then it's like, you know,
- 45:27sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
- 45:28But I'm always happy, you know, right up until the point that it doesn't work.
- 45:32Genuinely thinking about this and you on the way up here today to was
- 45:36you know, you're you're a, you're a swing big.
- 45:39Oh this big hit big kind of guy. Right.
- 45:42And I'm the guy that's like, I'm going to go and I'm
- 45:45going to try to milk something out of something, right?
- 45:47Like it may just be a reserve champion.
- 45:49Southdown something.
- 45:51I'm going to get me something before I get out of here.
- 45:53Yeah. I'm swinging for the fences.
- 45:57I am definitely that's definitely where I kind of land.
- 45:59It's part of the reason we talked about it last time.
- 46:01Like it's part of the reason that I like, I have to I can't give up on them.
- 46:04Like, I just have to, like I'm committed.
- 46:06Like I'm in that down there in that box whole, like, I gotta, I gotta fight.
- 46:11You gotta get out of here.
- 46:12So I think I used to be a gut instinct kind of guy, and I think
- 46:17I still am to a point, but I hate to keep, you know, beating a dead horse on this.
- 46:22But as the prices of these things have risen, sure,
- 46:25I'm not as much a gut instinct guy,
- 46:28because used to I would walk in and I'd be like, yep, that's him.
- 46:32Let's go.
- 46:33Now it's like, yep, that's him.
- 46:35Oh, how much is he? How much does it cost?
- 46:39That's when we start going through the checklist okay.
- 46:41Like, you know, I know if this thing is going to cost me
- 46:43ten, 15, $20,000, like, stuff's going to have to fit a little bit better, right?
- 46:48Well, and I think that also, you know, as we talk about this and, you know,
- 46:52separating ourselves from the breeder, the seller, you know, even,
- 46:56you know, the the advisor
- 46:58in some capacity to our customers, whatever you want to call that.
- 47:01And just think about it strictly from like stock show dad standpoint.
- 47:04It also the checklist becomes more and more real to me
- 47:10as we're sitting here again.
- 47:12You know, we talked about it like we don't know
- 47:14who's doing our major stock shows, you know.
- 47:16And so you're kind of like like that.
- 47:18That's where like I think you kind of almost like hedge a little and can like
- 47:22think about like okay, well that one like hits me hard.
- 47:27And going back to what you talked about, like,
- 47:28okay, that's the one that hits me hard.
- 47:30Well, let's say, you know, you know, San Antonio just announced there is like,
- 47:33does that hit Jason Simpson and Jake haunches hard.
- 47:36You know, that's maybe when that checklist really starts like I know he hits me.
- 47:39I know if I'm judging, like grand champion honors.
- 47:41Let's get out of here.
- 47:43But does it hit those guys?
- 47:45You know, that's probably where, like,
- 47:46that checklist can become more and more of like.
- 47:48Well, we're not chilling at the County Road De and Knowlton, Texas.
- 47:51Jackpot.
- 47:52We should have a jackpot there.
- 47:54Be fun. Set up like a tent.
- 47:56We never get started.
- 47:58You'd be late to your own jackpot.
- 48:00Well, so. Okay. Price pressure,
- 48:04this budget.
- 48:05Obviously. I think that kind of answers itself, right?
- 48:08This budget change the decision or does the price change the decision?
- 48:12And I think it does. Right.
- 48:14I think it does with everybody and I don't I don't care if your disposable income
- 48:17is, you know, astronomical or, you know, even if you're, you know,
- 48:22a swing for the fence guy, like budget is still real, right?
- 48:27Like, I mean, we're all, if we want to be honest, spending more than we should.
- 48:31And, you know, these things obviously cost a lot of money.
- 48:34And, you know,
- 48:35families are doing
- 48:36everything in their power to try to, you know, by the best ones they have and,
- 48:39you know, have the nice stuff at home and the nice trailer, like,
- 48:42I mean, let's, you know, real world, real world stuff.
- 48:45So, yeah, I mean, budgets are always going to be a deal
- 48:48that that is going to drive people in some capacity.
- 48:51You know, we're having a live sale tomorrow.
- 48:53There could be, you know, a guy
- 48:54that walks in that thinks that no matter what, he's buying one of those lots.
- 48:58And then if again, those two fools link up, like at some point,
- 49:02you know, he might be like, well, he wants it worse than I do.
- 49:05And that all goes back into,
- 49:06you know, their budget or what they're willing to sacrifice or whatever.
- 49:11Probably what I'm fixing to get into tomorrow night.
- 49:13Yeah.
- 49:14No, you got to be that guy
- 49:15that just bows up, looks across the table and says, let's get it on.
- 49:19Yeah. Yes, that's what I love to hear.
- 49:21I love to hear that.
- 49:22But I also think I also think that, like, we have to remember
- 49:26like and I, and I kind of always keep this in the back of my mind
- 49:29and like I use it as a little bit of like, you know, maybe a little motivation.
- 49:32Like there's always going to be somebody that can spend more than you.
- 49:36This is a feeders game.
- 49:37Like if you buy that one though, that's like, maybe he's not perfect.
- 49:42Maybe he's not exactly, you know, the high seller.
- 49:45But like, hey, that one fits my barn.
- 49:47That one fits my kid.
- 49:49That one fits the guy that I'm going to because I did my homework.
- 49:52And I know that lot two is better than lot one for this particular show.
- 49:56And even though so-and-so bought lot one and that was the one to buy that day
- 50:00because he did look, you know, maybe the best
- 50:02and maybe even the one that I liked the best that a lot to like,
- 50:05if I'll do my homework and I'll, I'll go home
- 50:08and we'll, we'll take care of that thing we were supposed to and we'll feed
- 50:11and exercise and, you know, all the stuff, and we'll get him out and jackpot him.
- 50:15And, you know, give that sheep the best opportunity that genetically is possible.
- 50:19Like it's a feeders game. Like use it as a challenge.
- 50:21Like go beat that guy.
- 50:23Absolutely.
- 50:24That's that's funny to me than just going out
- 50:27and buying the high dollar one and keeping even the high dollar one and
- 50:30and winning with him.
- 50:31Not not saying that winning is not fun at at any level,
- 50:35but it's fun to go out there and find that one that's,
- 50:38you know, 2500 bucks or whatever he was, and feed on him and win with him.
- 50:42Well, and that's how you know, like I and obviously I'll reference Papa.
- 50:45Hey, you know, in this deal I mean like he was always and you know, I grew up with
- 50:50a, you know, parents that were education school teachers, like, so we didn't.
- 50:55And maybe, maybe dad was a little smarter than I am.
- 50:58Like, he would pump, pump the brakes.
- 51:01Sometimes whenever I just try to swing for the fence.
- 51:03But like, it was like, you know, going to bro six back in the day
- 51:07and, you know, like I referenced it, you know,
- 51:09in one of those first couple episodes, like the sheep that I went in Dallas with,
- 51:12he literally came home and like,
- 51:13he had like four joints that needed to be taken off his tail.
- 51:17I mean, like, and I think that she brought $1,100,
- 51:20you know, and but like, you know, kind of got to be creative.
- 51:24You got to have imagination. You got to know, hey.
- 51:26And he was fat.
- 51:28Pray found him over stuck in the corner of, you know, the feed trough knowing him.
- 51:32And, you know, nobody else saw him, but like.
- 51:35Yeah. And then, you know, he took him home.
- 51:36He did a tail job on him.
- 51:37We tracked him and,
- 51:38you know, like, all of a sudden he's like, hey, we might have something.
- 51:41So I think just because like, and you know,
- 51:43you see it all the time and I get it and it can be frustrating.
- 51:46I'm, you know, we're candid and we, you know, talk about things openly.
- 51:50Like, I really, really wanted to buy that sheep that sold at Blue Bloods last year.
- 51:54And you know, that one ends up winning Fort Worth.
- 51:57And I can't repeat on camera what Graham said.
- 52:00Yeah.
- 52:00I mean, so, like, you know,
- 52:01like we all there's always somebody that might, you know, outbid you.
- 52:04And so you just kind of got to go home and like, hey, I'm, I'm, I'm
- 52:07pretty decent at this.
- 52:08Like I'm going to try hard and we're gonna,
- 52:09we're gonna see what happens, maybe beat em, maybe you don't.
- 52:11Maybe your third. But like.
- 52:13That Blue Bloods final cross panned out pretty good.
- 52:16Yeah, yeah.
- 52:19If you're into red ribbons.
- 52:22So give me give me three questions.
- 52:27Gut check questions before you, before you commit, before you commit and say,
- 52:32yep, I'm going to take him home.
- 52:35I would say the first one, you know, kind of goes back to that.
- 52:37Does he fit the judge?
- 52:38I think you have to be very aware of that situation.
- 52:42Does he fit what I'm doing this year? Yeah.
- 52:44Yeah yeah. Does he fit? Does he fit? You fit.
- 52:46Does he fair a program? Let's say that. Because I don't want him to think that.
- 52:49Like you need to go and buy a sheet. For sure.
- 52:52Great point. Yeah.
- 52:53Great point.
- 52:53No. Does he fit our program?
- 52:55Does he fit our program? And that can be.
- 52:57Does he fit our house? Does he fit our kids?
- 52:59Does he fit the shows that we're going to.
- 53:00And that can be as much as age wise.
- 53:03You know, like see some of these guys that will call, you know,
- 53:05and hey, I saw that you're having your, you know, your fall born sale.
- 53:08And it's like the first part of December.
- 53:10Like I wanted to ask you about lot one. All right. Yeah. Cool.
- 53:12Look real good sheet, blah blah blah.
- 53:14Tell him he's bread. All right. We got a county show next April.
- 53:17Do you think he'll work for that?
- 53:19No, he will not.
- 53:20You know, like so does.
- 53:22So, you know, that would definitely have to be on one.
- 53:24Does he fit the program?
- 53:26You know, program at home.
- 53:28Kids showing ability.
- 53:31You know,
- 53:31and then maybe what show he's going to and obviously that kind of, you know, kind
- 53:34of comes in there and falls in line with, with with the judge's perspective.
- 53:38I know that this is probably definitely not something you're going to agree with.
- 53:43If we had if we had your wife on here, she could she could back me on this.
- 53:46But like I like to know how their bread.
- 53:49I'm, I'm very.
- 53:52I think you maybe you're taking this a little too far.
- 53:54I'm very
- 53:56aware of how some of those things feed
- 53:59that we have had some success with, and there's some consistency there.
- 54:04And so I just kind of always
- 54:06and like we're having to buy these things as 60, 70, 90 day old babies.
- 54:10Like we're trying to project out at the end of the day,
- 54:12like, doesn't it sound crazy?
- 54:14You just gave 5000 for a 75 day old baby lamb or goat,
- 54:19and you're trying to project out how he's going to grow 12 months from now.
- 54:24If people were not involved in our game, they would say, we all are stupid.
- 54:28Whole other podcast about this knowing the breeding behind the weather
- 54:32that you're fixing to buy. Yeah, but I just.
- 54:34Think it's rate of genetics is so fast nowadays
- 54:38in in bucks nowadays or year one.
- 54:43And then done or whatever.
- 54:45It's like well how do we how do we know now it's not saying that I don't ask.
- 54:50I still ask how they're bred every time, but I think I look at it
- 54:53more of the second generation and the third generation.
- 54:58That's what I take into account more, right?
- 55:00Because that's where we're going to start getting our predictability like,
- 55:03oh, absolutely.
- 55:04You know, a first year.
- 55:05But yeah, we really don't know how those are going to feed or do.
- 55:08But is he, you know, is he a chief unicorn?
- 55:11Yeah. Did his dad do something. Yeah I see the yeah.
- 55:13Well something and we know that there's some predictability.
- 55:16And I think the, I think the, probably the thing that I like to keep up
- 55:19with, books are always the first thing you hear, right?
- 55:21Somebody says, hey, how's that one bread.
- 55:23You know, that's always what they're going to say.
- 55:25I like to try to keep up with what some of those females have done.
- 55:28You know, we probably fall into a little bit
- 55:32of a small circle there in terms of where we buy sheep.
- 55:35I don't know, you might disagree with that.
- 55:38But, you know, like we've had some of those youths
- 55:41that have raised some of those sheet that we've been successful with.
- 55:43So the next year when I go to, you know, to that place or the next year on the,
- 55:47you know, the ones at the house, I want to be like, okay, hey.
- 55:49She raised that one last year and that's how he fed.
- 55:52That's what he did.
- 55:53Now, I know this one's out
- 55:54of a different book, whatever, but it's just something to kind of like.
- 55:57I just feel like.
- 55:58I feel like it's something you can kind of add to that checklist.
- 56:00Like you're kind of in there.
- 56:02You're you're making those decisions and like,
- 56:04so that's that's probably the thing that I would kind of land on second.
- 56:07So you know does does that one, does that one fit our program.
- 56:11Does he kind of check all of those things.
- 56:12And then and then you know I like to I like to, you know,
- 56:16kind of know a little bit of genetic background
- 56:18and kind of where those things, where those things
- 56:19kind of kind of land from that perspective.
- 56:21And then I think the last thing and it can sometimes be hard because,
- 56:26you know, we might be, you know, traveling solo or, you know, if you're
- 56:30have ran around with me very much, you know, maybe I do stuff late at night.
- 56:36I love
- 56:38if one of my kids is there to have them set them up, because I think that kind of
- 56:41goes back to what you were talking, you know, like, does he look good on that one?
- 56:46Does Joe look good on that one?
- 56:47You know,
- 56:47just kind of that last little final like, hey y'all, grab that thing, set him up.
- 56:51You know, just kind of that like,
- 56:52does it look like it could all blend when they're a year down the road?
- 56:56Like, that's always something that we try to like, try to do and also like,
- 57:01you know, like breeders are used to showing those sheeps.
- 57:04So like, let's be honest, like they're,
- 57:05you know, they might be able to hide a few flaws,
- 57:07you know, they got so like put the kids on them and just see like,
- 57:09hey, does everything look like I did right before I, you know, sign this check.
- 57:13I did that.
- 57:14I mean, while you were at the hair salon, I.
- 57:17Was barber. I go to a barber, I don't go to a hair salon.
- 57:20Like getting curls.
- 57:20As long as you took there, I thought maybe you were getting
- 57:23your nails done or something.
- 57:25I was looking at your set down there,
- 57:27and the one that I wanted to look at, I had I had Chet get on him.
- 57:33I said, hey, get on that sheet, set him up, sets him up.
- 57:35I told Graham, grandma, stand there.
- 57:38She has four foot, nine grand, six foot.
- 57:41Graham, get on that sheet.
- 57:43You know, I wanted to see the difference.
- 57:45I just did that. Like what?
- 57:46How does that sheet match up? Right. Yeah.
- 57:49Yeah yeah. Great point.
- 57:50Yeah.
- 57:51Those are kind of the three that I guess,
- 57:52you know, right there before we, we kind of, you know, file them in.
- 57:55So last thing before we close out this episode,
- 57:59you know, if we're picking multiple animals for Texas majors
- 58:03for, for multiple kids, right.
- 58:05Like, we've got to pick from multiple kids.
- 58:07I've got two kids.
- 58:08My own multiple breeds. Multiple breeds.
- 58:11We help a bunch of people.
- 58:12We've got a fine sheep for those people.
- 58:14What's our what's your strategy there?
- 58:17I wonder how different it is from Australia.
- 58:20I think mine is probably gether.
- 58:23I always say I'm a hunter gatherer, like I'm going to drive around, run
- 58:28around, beat the bushes, and I'm just going to gather up
- 58:31as many good ones as I can possibly afford.
- 58:34You know,
- 58:35going through that checklist,
- 58:36going through all the things that we've talked about on this episode,
- 58:38like good ones are good ones, you know, we've got five, six,
- 58:42seven options, you know, as far as, you know, from Dallas to, to Austin,
- 58:47you know, on where ones that might be different can fit.
- 58:50So we're going to gather up is just many good ones as we can.
- 58:55And you know, both of us are in similar situations
- 58:57where we've got some families that rely on us,
- 58:59you know, you know, help them in those selections
- 59:01and in that, in that hunter and hunting and gathering process.
- 59:04And so that's kind of my deal is like there's always going to be different
- 59:08budgets.
- 59:09Sheep are going to cost difference, you know,
- 59:10like whether it's finals and crosses, whatever that looks like.
- 59:13And so it's kind of just one of those deals.
- 59:14I mean, I've obviously been to your place and you know, as many,
- 59:17you know, finals and crosses we've bought and traded over the years from like
- 59:21you guys like sometimes I buy 4 or 5 of the real expensive, real good ones.
- 59:25And then sometimes I'm like, hey, man, I got a couple of real young families.
- 59:28But like, our budgets not quite there yet.
- 59:30Like, you know, a little imagination. Show me them.
- 59:32Show me that skinny pen.
- 59:33Like, let's get in there and let's dig around and let's do some,
- 59:36let's do some, let's do some livestock sorting,
- 59:38you know,
- 59:38and just see if there's not something in there that we can find that looks like,
- 59:42hey, in 60 days and 90 days like that one's going to make one.
- 59:46And so that's kind of my philosophy is like,
- 59:48we're going to try to gather up as many as we can.
- 59:51I always tell the kids, don't name them till validation because it may change.
- 59:56And like that one, I mean, we've had it before, like taking a sheep to a jackpot
- 1:00:01wins the jackpot.
- 1:00:02And Monday he's gone. Yeah.
- 1:00:05You know, and you were talking about that
- 1:00:07I thought about
- 1:00:08when you're talking about in the big ring and seeing what they look like.
- 1:00:11You know, last year we had a, we had a weather that we took to a jackpot weekend.
- 1:00:14We were there just donkey stomps at all for all four rings.
- 1:00:19Right.
- 1:00:20And I'm thinking, man, I got I got one here, you know,
- 1:00:25go to
- 1:00:25Kansas City, get him in a big ring on a big stage.
- 1:00:28And I sit there and go, he's not good enough, right?
- 1:00:32He was good enough at that little jackpot in that little ring
- 1:00:35in the middle of the summer.
- 1:00:36But yeah, it's not.
- 1:00:38And I mean, I think that's the thing
- 1:00:39that, like, people can't beat theirself up about.
- 1:00:42And I mean like even, you know, guys.
- 1:00:43I mean he was a bad cheap. Absolutely.
- 1:00:45Yeah.
- 1:00:46But we're talking about sorting hairs, you know, cutting fine hairs here.
- 1:00:50And, you know,
- 1:00:51you would have went through all of that checklist that we talked about.
- 1:00:54You would
- 1:00:55you would have tied into all the big things that sheep
- 1:00:57would have probably had majority of the bells and whistles.
- 1:01:00And then sometimes you get there and you're like, hey, that's a nice one.
- 1:01:03That one's not good enough to maybe do what we're trying to do.
- 1:01:06And it's just part of it. Like, you guys have had success.
- 1:01:09We've been fortunate to have success on on, you know, the big stage and like it's
- 1:01:13just part of it.
- 1:01:14Like again, we're trying to project these things out,
- 1:01:17you know, and like you're hoping that everything goes in line
- 1:01:20and everything works, whether it's, you know, sheep, goats,
- 1:01:23I mean, you know,
- 1:01:23obviously any of the species, but like just part of it,
- 1:01:26sometimes you get them out there and if you're objective
- 1:01:28and you don't just go back and kick the bucket and say,
- 1:01:31that damn judge has no idea what he's doing.
- 1:01:33No, man.
- 1:01:34That sheep, he's. Just.
- 1:01:36He's wasn't good enough. Like, it's part of it.
- 1:01:38We've all been there.
- 1:01:39I've. I have my sheep. Shear loves to come.
- 1:01:42You know about February.
- 1:01:44And there is no telling the dollar amount of sheep that he will take to
- 1:01:48harvest and butcher.
- 1:01:51Always tell him, like, hey, bud, that's prime lamb.
- 1:01:53Like that stuff.
- 1:01:55He's like, why don't you buy that one?
- 1:01:57I'm like, I'm not real sure right now.
- 1:01:58I don't know why I did that.
- 1:02:00So yeah.
- 1:02:01So I mean that's a, that's kind of my, that's that's my deal.
- 1:02:04Does that very for you are you. Yeah. No no I don't.
- 1:02:06Maybe a little bit I think, you know when you're buying a
- 1:02:10we're going to go out and try to buy the best ones.
- 1:02:12We can write and put those together.
- 1:02:16And then for me to there I think, you know, budget
- 1:02:19seems to sort a lot of that out.
- 1:02:21How do how do we get these into all these different homes
- 1:02:25and make sure that all these different families and kids are successful?
- 1:02:29And it's not like I pick and choose and I have a favorite or anything like that.
- 1:02:33I think budget just, just naturally kind of.
- 1:02:37Dictates some of that. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:02:39No, I would agree I would agree okay.
- 1:02:41All right. So I think we're kind of wrapped up.
- 1:02:43All right.
- 1:02:44So I hope that I've got something down there that checks some of those boxes.
- 1:02:47I can't wait till tomorrow night.
- 1:02:48Whenever you're like you're probably going to be on the front row I bet bidding I.
- 1:02:52Know I may just stay at the hotel and bid online or something.
- 1:02:56Golly, I'm gonna tell everybody.
- 1:02:58Hey, y'all watch it.
- 1:02:59If Sam's bidding, that thing checks all the boxes, okay?
- 1:03:02And you need you need to. You need to bid on that one.
- 1:03:04Too bad the sales aren't going to happen when this, but.
- 1:03:07I know, I know.
- 1:03:09So that's kind of a wrap on episode three.
- 1:03:11You know, we talked about obviously walking in the pen,
- 1:03:14you know, the things that hit us hard, the things that, you know, we can't,
- 1:03:17can't accept not being, you know, very, very good.
- 1:03:21The things that,
- 1:03:22you know, maybe we kind of want to make some of those decisions
- 1:03:24or make some of those tough decisions and those close calls on,
- 1:03:28I think whenever we talk about, you know, after we've made that selection,
- 1:03:31you know, I kind of talked about a lot ago, like we signed that check.
- 1:03:34We're loading in the loading in the trailer.
- 1:03:35We're taking them home.
- 1:03:36So next time we'll hit on what that looks like.
- 1:03:40Going home with that animal shot, halter breaking,
- 1:03:45getting them to
- 1:03:46eat, keeping them on feed, keeping them healthy.
- 1:03:49That's what the next episode is going to be about.
- 1:03:51Yeah, I'm going to I feel like I feel like this one so far.
- 1:03:54And I think a lot of our listeners and our guests will probably agree, like,
- 1:03:58I think the first three episodes of Drench Line,
- 1:04:00everybody knowing us in our buddies and our friends
- 1:04:03and our customers are probably like, hey, that was really informative.
- 1:04:07At some point, when are them guys going to really get into it?
- 1:04:11I think that's next time. Yeah.
- 1:04:13Different, different.
- 1:04:14Different mindsets, different feeds, different approaches.
- 1:04:17Time to start ruffling some feathers.
- 1:04:20I can't wait.
- 1:04:21All right. So we do have a couple of questions.
- 1:04:24Or I guess we got a little handful of them here that we had folks submitted.
- 1:04:29So again you know if you got any questions as you, you know listen
- 1:04:33drop us a line on com.
- 1:04:35You can submit them.
- 1:04:36And as we kind of work through these episodes,
- 1:04:38we will hopefully try to answer them the best of our ability
- 1:04:41or kind of what we feel like, you know, work for us.
- 1:04:44I'm not going to sit here and tell you
- 1:04:45that it's the perfect answer to maybe where you live or what.
- 1:04:49You know, the things that you've got.
- 1:04:50All we can do is talk about what we've seen, what we've done,
- 1:04:53kind of what works for us.
- 1:04:54So yeah, as we kind of answer through some of these questions, again,
- 1:04:59drop us a line.
- 1:05:01If you got any
- 1:05:01thoughts, questions concerns submit something.
- 1:05:05I'm not going to tell you that it's the perfect answer for your situation.
- 1:05:08Or we can talk about.
- 1:05:09Things on the table.
- 1:05:10Anything is on the table. Like,
- 1:05:12What?
- 1:05:12Sam beard oil he uses.
- 1:05:16Oh, okay.
- 1:05:17Yeah.
- 1:05:17All we can talk about some things that that we have that we've seen that
- 1:05:20we've done in our trials and probably mostly errors.
- 1:05:25So, Samantha, Samantha hit us with, do you feed hay?
- 1:05:28And if so.
- 1:05:29And so we're going to we're going to make that a two segment question because
- 1:05:33and again I know what we'll probably talk about this throughout the you know the
- 1:05:37this these sessions we probably land a little more sheep friendly
- 1:05:41because that is both of, you know, maybe our passions a little bit more.
- 1:05:46And then, you know, we've all got our goat buddies that,
- 1:05:49you know, just continue to enforce our hand on that.
- 1:05:52So we'll kind of talk about that on the sheep side and the goat side,
- 1:05:55because I do think that kind of varies. Yeah.
- 1:05:57So you and I talked about this other day,
- 1:06:00just maybe in person or on the phone.
- 1:06:04I do not feed alfalfa.
- 1:06:08I feed a grassy,
- 1:06:13I feed a grass.
- 1:06:14Every evening we feed Tifton 85.
- 1:06:17That's what we have in round bells that we feed our use.
- 1:06:19It's a fertilized, irrigated Tipton 85.
- 1:06:22It's a great grassy.
- 1:06:25And if you do the research on Tipton, it's kind of.
- 1:06:27And I'm not saying that's the one you need to feed, but let's just say, you
- 1:06:30know, coastal Tifton, something of that coastal Bermuda.
- 1:06:34I feed grass
- 1:06:35because I just want to keep their guts working there, a ruminant animal.
- 1:06:38They have to have that in their gut to keep it working.
- 1:06:41They have to have some stem in there.
- 1:06:42And the reason for that is, is I don't want to change
- 1:06:45the protein content in their diet that much.
- 1:06:50I just want something to keep that gut going.
- 1:06:52And I know that the feed and supplements
- 1:06:54I'm using are doing what they're supposed to do.
- 1:06:56My grass aids keeping the gut work and keeping things functioning properly
- 1:07:00and not shit them out. Yep.
- 1:07:05Agreed to a certain point.
- 1:07:07Agree to disagree slightly, but yeah, I would.
- 1:07:10I would agree with most of it. Tell me this.
- 1:07:12Okay.
- 1:07:12Again, you know, two part question show goats.
- 1:07:15Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:18I still feed grass to my goats to
- 1:07:22I don't I don't offer them, you know much alfalfa, but.
- 1:07:26Do you chop it up like the professionals do?
- 1:07:28I do not chop it up. You're not a professional.
- 1:07:31He's not a guys. He's not a professional.
- 1:07:33Goat herder.
- 1:07:35Yeah. Okay.
- 1:07:37Yeah, I would agree.
- 1:07:38The only thing that we do feed alfalfa, we've always fed alfalfa.
- 1:07:42I'm a big believer in alfalfa.
- 1:07:44And, you know,
- 1:07:45that is probably a I'm sure that someone will have some opinion on that.
- 1:07:48And quite frankly, I don't care because I know what's worked for us.
- 1:07:54We don't feed what let's call horse quality.
- 1:07:59Number one, all the leaves we feed, we feed striped rained on.
- 1:08:04Yeah, cheap stuff. Like I called my guy down the road.
- 1:08:06I'm like, hey, you got any that stuff
- 1:08:07that's been rained on like three times and you've raked it twice
- 1:08:10and you know, it's got a little stem to it.
- 1:08:12To me, that's, that's that's the kind of outfall for that.
- 1:08:14We feed and we feed it along with, with grass.
- 1:08:16So what we try to do.
- 1:08:17Early on is we feed a little heavier alfalfa while they're growing
- 1:08:21as that growing, you know, curve.
- 1:08:24You know, as
- 1:08:24we work through the year, always call it, we kind of let that pendulum shift.
- 1:08:28We start off like 75% alfalfa, 25% grass,
- 1:08:32and then we kind of flip it as the year goes on.
- 1:08:34So but again, ruminant animals,
- 1:08:37some of that, you know,
- 1:08:39steamy alfalfa grass that'll get in there and scratch things up,
- 1:08:42keep things rolling, keep things active, microbial development and all that.
- 1:08:47Without question. Goats.
- 1:08:50I'm probably going to get in trouble
- 1:08:52because of the guys that like to sell me goats.
- 1:08:55I don't know, probably not.
- 1:08:56They're probably
- 1:08:57laughing at us right now, but they they aren't big on the hay deal.
- 1:09:01We still feed. Hey, they're still ruminants.
- 1:09:03We need to they.
- 1:09:04I feel like they eat better.
- 1:09:07I have chopped it up a couple of times, so maybe I'm.
- 1:09:11I don't know yet.
- 1:09:12Like little scissors and. Chop it up. Hoof nippers.
- 1:09:15Yeah,
- 1:09:16I think it's maybe just kind of what I try to do to maybe get out of whatever
- 1:09:19we're finishing the day with.
- 1:09:20I'll just be like, all right, I gotta chop the goats hay.
- 1:09:23Well, everybody else is like, still raking pins.
- 1:09:25Mix a cocktail and chop up. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:09:28Yep. All right. Thanks, Samantha. Hopefully, maybe.
- 1:09:30Kind of answered answer.
- 1:09:33Kind of what we do and what we found some success with.
- 1:09:35Chance.
- 1:09:37Chance?
- 1:09:38First time stock show dad here.
- 1:09:41Should I share my daughter sheep with a surgical blade?
- 1:09:45The breed is a south down.
- 1:09:48Oh, man, that's a very good question, chance.
- 1:09:50And you know, God bless you for being the first time.
- 1:09:53Show dad going through all this.
- 1:09:56You know, that's a that is a really that's a really good question.
- 1:10:00I think it's a loaded question too, because when we talk about off breeds.
- 1:10:04Right.
- 1:10:05We have got to talk about hide quality.
- 1:10:08Sure.
- 1:10:09Big deal.
- 1:10:09I think if you know that that Southdown is really good hide it.
- 1:10:13He's tight.
- 1:10:13Hide it. And what I would call has a little belly wool on him.
- 1:10:16Some of those swirls in there.
- 1:10:18I think
- 1:10:18you're totally fine with sharing him with the surgical for a major stock show.
- 1:10:23If you were going to go to just a jackpot sharing with Bines,
- 1:10:27you're going to be fine.
- 1:10:27But if we're going to go to somewhere like Houston
- 1:10:30and we have to shear on a Monday and we're not showing until a Wednesday,
- 1:10:35then you probably need to go with some surgical.
- 1:10:37That's going to be my answer. Yeah, I would agree.
- 1:10:41What do you do on the on your jackpot cheap during the summer.
- 1:10:44Is that very.
- 1:10:46No. We typically always share those.
- 1:10:48Well, it'll change a little bit.
- 1:10:50Depends on if I really want to go, like, knock somebody's head off or not.
- 1:10:53Like whenever you call and say, hey, are you going to that show?
- 1:10:55And then all of a sudden know that, like, oh, dude, Sam's got loaded.
- 1:10:59Yeah. We'll text each other.
- 1:11:00Like I was just going to share with fines and roll in there and, you know, be fine.
- 1:11:03He'll start drenching like, on Tuesday. Yeah.
- 1:11:05Find out Logan's coming.
- 1:11:06I'm like, I'm gonna change my little outlook here.
- 1:11:10Typically we'll share with finds at a jackpot
- 1:11:13because I want to give them a little extra protection from, like, fungus, stuff
- 1:11:16like that.
- 1:11:17I want to strip them down as hard, and you can shear on a Friday.
- 1:11:21You're going to show on a Saturday, right?
- 1:11:24Good, good. Sharp pair of fines.
- 1:11:25I think you're fine with jackpots there.
- 1:11:27Yeah, that's that's the same philosophy we have.
- 1:11:29We'll do fines all during the summer.
- 1:11:31Kind of maybe help with, you know, combat that fungus deal just a little bit. And,
- 1:11:35Yeah,
- 1:11:36I think that that's a I think that's a great question, chance.
- 1:11:39I think make sure that that animal skin quality is good enough for surgical.
- 1:11:44Right.
- 1:11:45And maybe even like a new pair of surgical,
- 1:11:47like we've all got those that have kind of been floating around
- 1:11:49you've had for like ten years
- 1:11:51and they've been sharpened like 97 times and you're like.
- 1:11:54Well.
- 1:11:55That's that's what that dude did me today when he was lining me up.
- 1:11:57I bet those were some like, yeah, some old surgical he had in the back.
- 1:12:00Yeah. Okay. Chance. Good luck.
- 1:12:02I hope you get to continue being a stock show.
- 1:12:04Dad. Don't get frustrated, buddy.
- 1:12:05Ask more questions if you use chance. Yeah, Mark.
- 1:12:08All right.
- 1:12:08Mark said I see people.
- 1:12:10Oh, dude, this is going to be good.
- 1:12:12I see people with chain halters and rope halters.
- 1:12:16Do you have a preference?
- 1:12:18Can we get some music on this right now?
- 1:12:20Is this where you're like.
- 1:12:22So the the
- 1:12:24the joke is amongst us is that, you know, we're making fun of somebody.
- 1:12:29We'll call them the, you know, those rope, halter shoulders.
- 1:12:32Rope altar crew. Yeah. That rope halter crew.
- 1:12:34God, we're going to get so much trouble for this one.
- 1:12:38Some of our old West Texas buddies are probably going to hear this
- 1:12:40and be super mad at us.
- 1:12:42Yeah, I am not a fan of rope halters.
- 1:12:45We're chain halter people.
- 1:12:48If anybody knows, we were the ones that kind of started the West draw.
- 1:12:53Yeah, yeah, I actually sometimes forget about that.
- 1:12:56So we kind of started that whole, you know, wipe down
- 1:12:59chain halters that keep the fungus off and all that stuff.
- 1:13:02But, yeah, big chain halters.
- 1:13:04And I think the biggest for me is when you're teaching, though,
- 1:13:08I think they're safer.
- 1:13:09I really do,
- 1:13:11because if we clip on to the fence or we walk away,
- 1:13:15if they set back or fall down or something like that,
- 1:13:17and they get up as soon as they get up and leave that pressure.
- 1:13:20That chain. Yeah. Kind of releases.
- 1:13:22In those rope halters.
- 1:13:23Yeah. We're going to suck down on the nose.
- 1:13:26And I've seen some sheep and goats killed with those.
- 1:13:29Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:13:30That's a that's a good I mean that's obviously definitely
- 1:13:32something that, you know, you can tell
- 1:13:33I always forget that y'all started I don't know why.
- 1:13:36Just that seems like ages ago.
- 1:13:40Yeah.
- 1:13:40But you obviously put some Jerry must have put some thoughts into that
- 1:13:44on you actually probably did kill a really, really expensive one.
- 1:13:48And you're like, hey, we got to change this.
- 1:13:51Yeah.
- 1:13:52Yeah. So that's that's kind of where we're at.
- 1:13:54But I agree 100%.
- 1:13:57And I think those animals just respond better, you know, like
- 1:14:00when you're trying to halter break them, like give them a little tension there.
- 1:14:03That rope halter just kind of pulls tight.
- 1:14:05I think you said something that, you know, maybe we don't think about as much,
- 1:14:08but that wiped down ability to disinfect, keep those things sanitary.
- 1:14:13Going from show to show. Like that's huge.
- 1:14:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:14:16That's a.
- 1:14:16And I'm going to I'm going to go back to the golf thing.
- 1:14:19Right. Like
- 1:14:21you know getting back into this I'm going to play terrible.
- 1:14:23But by God I'm going to look.
- 1:14:25You're going to look good. Absolutely.
- 1:14:27You know that's something.
- 1:14:27And like you can get all those different colors like,
- 1:14:30we can, you know, give, give our buddy Tyson a plug there.
- 1:14:33I mean, like, those guys have real supplements.
- 1:14:36Every kind of color probably combo.
- 1:14:38You've probably got some customized ones.
- 1:14:40What if I'm going to have a bad lamb there?
- 1:14:43I'm going to have a cover on him
- 1:14:44on, have his legs wrapped and I'm a nice halter on him.
- 1:14:46When I walk out of the scale, I'm not somebody think.
- 1:14:48Cool, everybody's going to be like, dude, I bet that kid's got a good one.
- 1:14:51And and then all of a sudden you, like, walk in there like, oh, not so much.
- 1:14:55But you look great, man. Look great.
- 1:14:58I bet that's there's no telling how much you spent on your golf attire.
- 1:15:04I mean, I know that I know your your new clubs, but your golf attire.
- 1:15:08No, I found this this shirt I have on this golf shirt.
- 1:15:10I have one today that was on sale at Sam's Club.
- 1:15:14Oh, yeah. We also learned this about Sam.
- 1:15:16He does some of his wardrobe shopping at Sam's Club.
- 1:15:21I didn't actually know that that was as big of a thing as apparently it is.
- 1:15:24So that's not much different than Hibbett Sports and.
- 1:15:27Hip it. Sports is awesome.
- 1:15:28I'll have some. Good deals.
- 1:15:30Hibbett sports yeah, they're going to probably they're gonna
- 1:15:32they're going to sponsor us at some point because all of our sneakers
- 1:15:35come from there.
- 1:15:36That's that kind of wraps up episode three.
- 1:15:39I know this one, you know,
- 1:15:40probably gets a little more in line with maybe where we're going to be linked wise.
- 1:15:43I'm sure by the time you know, it gets, you know,
- 1:15:45cut down or whatever, it's, you know, kind of shoot for,
- 1:15:48you know,
- 1:15:48maybe that a little longer than
- 1:15:50maybe those first episodes or whatever, but hopefully you guys maybe found
- 1:15:53some information or some or some subtle humor.
- 1:15:56One of the two.
- 1:15:57And yeah, if you get any questions that you would like to submit to us again,
- 1:16:01you know, drop us a line, head over to line
- 1:16:04and you can submit those questions.

- 1:16:08Leave a review if you're on Apple, out at silvers, livestock.
- 1:16:12Silvers, Livestock News and livestock.
- 1:16:13Both of us got, you know, handful of sales and stuff coming up.
- 1:16:17I know we're both the same.
- 1:16:18Like I feel like this is like, you know, we talked about it.
- 1:16:20We're like in the thralls of all of it.
- 1:16:22Like, it feels like it's just 90 to nothing right now.
- 1:16:24Selling, buying, selling bond.
- 1:16:25But like, we both sell sheep up until.
- 1:16:28October 31st. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:30That's always tell people like, when do you sell sheep.
- 1:16:33Well, we don't sell in November and December,
- 1:16:35and the rest of the time we are probably selling.
- 1:16:37So give us a shout. We'd love to help you out.
- 1:16:41Hopefully, maybe
- 1:16:41we can help you achieve whatever that goal is it looks like. But.
- 1:16:44Yeah.
- 1:16:46Thanks for thanks for listening.
- 1:16:48Like Sam said, follow us.
