Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's a bittersweet day.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's exciting because the NFL Draft is tonight, it finally,
- 0:15Speaker 2: finally has arrived here.
- 0:17Speaker 1: But also it's a bitter.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Day, a sad day because lying season is over and
- 0:22Speaker 2: it's my favorite season. Yeah, and I'm upset about it.
- 0:24Speaker 2: So come eight o'clock tonight and everyone stops lying.
- 0:31Speaker 1: This is an.
- 0:31Speaker 2: NFL Draft spectacular. It's the biggest day of the year.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Me and mikey a love it. Taylor not so much.
- 0:38Speaker 2: We're gonna have mel Kiper for you, Todd McShay, We're
- 0:41Speaker 2: gonna have Matt Miller, We're gonna have field Yates, all
- 0:43Speaker 2: the guys you want to hear from here from headed
- 0:45Speaker 2: into the NFL Draft, Mike ya before we get to
- 0:48Speaker 2: all these guys, and we appreciate all of them spending
- 0:50Speaker 2: time with us during a busy.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Time for them.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Do you have a bold NFL Jets Draft prediction here?
- 0:57Speaker 3: I do, and it's that I'm gonna be pissed. Really, Yes,
- 1:05Speaker 3: that's not my bold prediction.
- 1:07Speaker 4: No, because I haven't to be happy. No, I haven't
- 1:09Speaker 4: been pissed in years. I haven't been pissed. Tonight, I'm
- 1:12Speaker 4: going to.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Be pissed yeah, go ahead, Tellier.
- 1:14Speaker 5: To be fair on FanDuel Mikey to be pissed was
- 1:17Speaker 5: minus five hundred.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Both of us being paid to be minus a million.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I mean, seriously, that is not bold. You being pissed
- 1:28Speaker 1: at the Jets draft. What's the matter with you.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I haven't been pissed at their draft in years. The
- 1:33Speaker 4: last time I was pissed at their draft it was
- 1:35Speaker 4: when they took Zach Wilson. I have not been mad
- 1:38Speaker 4: about any of their picks for years. Tonight, I know
- 1:41Speaker 4: it in my bones, I'm going to be pissed.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Let's apologize to the two gentlemen, the two kids who
- 1:47Speaker 2: are going to be selected number two, number sixteen in
- 1:49Speaker 2: the NFL. It is not your fault. We care about you,
- 1:52Speaker 2: We love you, and listen, get through your time with
- 1:55Speaker 2: the New York Jets and perhaps you'll have success elsewhere.
- 1:58Speaker 2: But in advance, just the guy they don't know who
- 2:00Speaker 2: they are yet, number two, number sixteen, That's what I'm
- 2:03Speaker 2: gonna call you.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We're sorry in advance.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yes, my bold prediction is the Jets take Jeremiah Love
- 2:12Speaker 2: number two.
- 2:13Speaker 1: How about that.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I wouldn't hate it, I'm saying I wouldn't hate it.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Best player in the draft. I mean, just take them.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Your team is awful. And by the way, if they
- 2:22Speaker 2: take Jeremiah Love at number two, Jeremiah.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Love, We're sorry. We are five years from now.
- 2:27Speaker 2: You'll be great in the Chief's uniform. The great Mel
- 2:34Speaker 2: Kiper is with us. We are getting close to the draft.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Mel is laughing already. I haven't even said anything. I'm
- 2:40Speaker 2: right by his house. He doesn't know that, but I'm
- 2:42Speaker 2: coming to visit in today. Mel, I am coming.
- 2:44Speaker 3: For you have no room at the end for his
- 2:46Speaker 3: doing at the.
- 2:48Speaker 6: Kuiper end, Mel's diner is full.
- 2:54Speaker 2: How is Mel Kuiper? You know, like a week and
- 2:56Speaker 2: a half out from the draft?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Are you like? Are you even more racketed up than
- 3:00Speaker 1: you normally? Are?
- 3:01Speaker 6: You know what? I'm still talking, which is a big
- 3:04Speaker 6: thing at the stage of the game. The boys hasn't
- 3:06Speaker 6: gone quite yet. Did the day before the draft last
- 3:08Speaker 6: year and I was able to recover somehow and got
- 3:10Speaker 6: it back in time for draft day. But no, I'm
- 3:13Speaker 6: trying to finalize the mock draft rounds one and two,
- 3:16Speaker 6: which is out Wednesday. Then the ratings, which is the
- 3:18Speaker 6: most important thing. Get my top one fifty in order
- 3:21Speaker 6: while my positional rankings in order, and then basically finish
- 3:24Speaker 6: up with that next weekend. So I'm a week away
- 3:26Speaker 6: from that. I'm only a few days away from finalizing
- 3:29Speaker 6: mock draft mock round one and also two, which makes
- 3:33Speaker 6: it really interesting. We we're trying to connect the dots
- 3:34Speaker 6: with the first and second round. But that'll all be
- 3:36Speaker 6: put to bed for me Sunday night. It goes up Wednesday.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Barring any late changes, I'll get to them Monday and Tuesday,
- 3:42Speaker 6: and that's it. I don't do any morning of the
- 3:44Speaker 6: draft mocks news and notes that morning, but not no
- 3:47Speaker 6: more mock draft. It ends on Wednesday.
- 3:50Speaker 2: That's the final draft. That's it. Now's final draft. Yes,
- 3:53Speaker 2: who's the player? Like, what's the thing that's changed the
- 3:55Speaker 2: most from the last mock draft to this mock draft?
- 3:58Speaker 1: Now?
- 3:59Speaker 6: I think Caden Proctor is such a wild card. I mean,
- 4:02Speaker 6: the offensive tackle from Alabama. You put him at six
- 4:05Speaker 6: to Cleveland? Do you drop him down in the twenties?
- 4:08Speaker 6: Nobody really has a handle one a kid who has
- 4:11Speaker 6: he has a talent to be Orlando Pace, but he
- 4:14Speaker 6: didn't play like that. You know he has. That's some
- 4:16Speaker 6: inconsistencies go back to the Florida State game that began
- 4:18Speaker 6: the year was tough. He figured he recovered from that
- 4:20Speaker 6: and he looked great at his protag So it makes
- 4:22Speaker 6: you think, boy, how many guys are six seven, three
- 4:25Speaker 6: point fifty two They can move like him when he's
- 4:27Speaker 6: light on his feet as Caton Proctor is, so he
- 4:29Speaker 6: can be as good as he, you know, as good
- 4:31Speaker 6: cat and Proctor wants to be focus, maximize, don't be
- 4:35Speaker 6: an underachiever in the NFL, because the talent is there
- 4:38Speaker 6: for him to be a Pro Bowl caliber left tackle.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Mel you know, you know the draft starts with my
- 4:43Speaker 4: Jets at two, but Jesus, the Jets have have four
- 4:47Speaker 4: of the top forty four picks, and I'm just not
- 4:49Speaker 4: excited about it this year because I'm.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Looking at this.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I'm looking at this group of players and I'm going, yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 4: they're they're good, but there's there's nobody that's getting me excited.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Now change my mind, please.
- 5:00Speaker 1: We make you feel better. Is that what you're saying
- 5:03Speaker 1: you see is a scout.
- 5:07Speaker 6: He thinks he knows more than everybody. Whatever, that right,
- 5:10Speaker 6: I don't want everybody You're out there right off his
- 5:14Speaker 6: draft as a as a D minus draft and there's
- 5:16Speaker 6: nobody out there. Sometimes the drafts that you think are
- 5:19Speaker 6: really good, sometimes they fizzled once they're in the league,
- 5:22Speaker 6: and we said, why did you overhype that guy? You
- 5:24Speaker 6: know he didn't live up to the to the all
- 5:26Speaker 6: the potential he showed. So I think it's this draft.
- 5:28Speaker 6: You just got in every draft, Mikey and so I got.
- 5:31Speaker 6: You got to pick the right players. And you're back
- 5:33Speaker 6: and say there was a seventh round or a couple
- 5:35Speaker 6: seventh rounders that made in every draft we cherry picked.
- 5:37Speaker 6: We act like would have taken them. That's a tough
- 5:39Speaker 6: part of being a general manager. It's easy to sit
- 5:41Speaker 6: back in the cheap seats and say, how did you
- 5:43Speaker 6: miss that guy? Why don't you take him? You only
- 5:46Speaker 6: have one pick in each round, Say if you just
- 5:48Speaker 6: go seventy, then sometimes you have extra picks. Let's say
- 5:50Speaker 6: one pick in each round. You're debating three or four guys.
- 5:53Speaker 6: You pick one you might have loved, You liked the
- 5:56Speaker 6: other three just as much, but you had to make
- 5:58Speaker 6: a call. So if you're in the cheap seats, you
- 6:01Speaker 6: pick the one out of the four and you talk
- 6:03Speaker 6: about that guy, say I'm a genius. But when you're
- 6:05Speaker 6: a Jets manager, you can only pick one. If that
- 6:08Speaker 6: guy doesn't pick three of those guys that you didn't
- 6:10Speaker 6: take might have been stars, but the one you did
- 6:12Speaker 6: take might have been a bust, and you're considering an idiot.
- 6:15Speaker 6: So that's the difference between being in that GM chair
- 6:18Speaker 6: and being where we are on the outside looking in
- 6:20Speaker 6: thinking we have all the answers when we don't. And
- 6:22Speaker 6: you know, to me, that's that's why. Until you're in
- 6:25Speaker 6: there and know the pressure and know the debates, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 6: and then the one man it has to make that
- 6:31Speaker 6: final call, whether it's the head coach, general manager, sometimes
- 6:34Speaker 6: an owner, whoever it is, that's that's that's got to
- 6:38Speaker 6: be brutal because you're never just one guy. It's always
- 6:41Speaker 6: three or four guys just there right in the mix.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Mel You could tell them it's the greatest draft in
- 6:46Speaker 2: the history of drafts.
- 6:47Speaker 1: He just lacks faith in the Jets, that's all. That's
- 6:50Speaker 1: what it is. Yet understandable.
- 6:55Speaker 6: Let's face it, there are at two, they're at sixteen,
- 6:57Speaker 6: and they're at thirty three. Right, you know what this
- 7:00Speaker 6: has fast become. If that last year was the Shadora Draft,
- 7:05Speaker 6: this is the ty Simpson draft, and you know, is
- 7:07Speaker 6: Ty Simpson after thirty three picks are made going to
- 7:11Speaker 6: be a New York Jet. That's what everybody has wants
- 7:14Speaker 6: to know. Is somebody gonna trade up ahead of the Jets?
- 7:17Speaker 6: Are just's gonna wait? What he falls in their lap?
- 7:19Speaker 6: Is he gonna be available for the other second round pick?
- 7:22Speaker 6: Who Ty Simpson right now is the guy when you
- 7:25Speaker 6: ask the question about who's the guy tough to project,
- 7:27Speaker 6: I mentioned Kayden Proctor. It's his teammate Ty Simpson. Because
- 7:31Speaker 6: if he's not going to the Jets, which everybody seem
- 7:33Speaker 6: to think he's not at sixteen, and he does look
- 7:35Speaker 6: like he's going to Pittsburgh at twenty one, and if
- 7:37Speaker 6: nobody trades back into the latter portion of round one
- 7:40Speaker 6: to get him, knowing you're gonna have to give up picks,
- 7:43Speaker 6: then is he's there at thirty three and the Jets?
- 7:46Speaker 6: And I asked Rich Semena, who covers the Jets does
- 7:48Speaker 6: their phenomenal job of no Rich forever. He said it
- 7:50Speaker 6: would be interesting at thirty three. Interesting, I mean it's
- 7:53Speaker 6: a slam dunk. It's just interesting. So we'll see if
- 7:56Speaker 6: where ty Simpson ends up, because like I say other
- 7:58Speaker 6: teams like Arizona. Everybody talks about the Rams. Rams if
- 8:01Speaker 6: they had the late first round pick, maybe they would
- 8:03Speaker 6: not say. I don't think at thirteen you're taking Ty
- 8:05Speaker 6: Simpson when you're built for now. You want to win now, yes,
- 8:08Speaker 6: with Matthew Stafford. You don't want to take Matthew Stafford's
- 8:11Speaker 6: air apparent. When you get a whole filler at pick
- 8:13Speaker 6: number thirteen or a bit where I'm talking about wide
- 8:15Speaker 6: receiver like Mackay Lemon or Jordan Tyson, somebody like that,
- 8:18Speaker 6: you don't take the quarterback that's maybe going to be
- 8:21Speaker 6: good and maybe be the air parent of Matthew Stafford
- 8:23Speaker 6: at thirteen.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Well, if I put you at the draft right now,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and I wish I could do that, But if I
- 8:27Speaker 2: put you there and the Jets did take Simpson at sixteen,
- 8:30Speaker 2: your reaction would be what.
- 8:32Speaker 6: I thought that could happen a while ago. I don't
- 8:35Speaker 6: think it's going to happen. You know, if it did
- 8:38Speaker 6: happen like you just suggested, I wouldn't say it's an
- 8:41Speaker 6: awful pick. I know, Mike, you would slant it like
- 8:43Speaker 6: it's horrible. I'll take Ty Simpson at sixteen. I said that,
- 8:46Speaker 6: And you know when you say stuff sometimes you have
- 8:48Speaker 6: to kind of rethink. I said, you really want to
- 8:50Speaker 6: love that guy at sixteen, I think you gotta love
- 8:53Speaker 6: Ty Simpson. I really do. Now you get into it
- 8:55Speaker 6: at thirty three if you'll like them, But you say
- 8:58Speaker 6: there's still something and there's gonna be something missing at
- 9:01Speaker 6: sixteen and something missing at thirty three. It's to say
- 9:03Speaker 6: what you didn't like at sixteen, you're still not gonna
- 9:06Speaker 6: like at thirty three. Right they say thirty three take
- 9:09Speaker 6: a shot. I'll take a shot and it doesn't work out,
- 9:12Speaker 6: and I don't see enough this year. I'll go get
- 9:14Speaker 6: the quarterback next year. I get that. But at sixteen,
- 9:17Speaker 6: you gotta love them. It's like the Boomer side bring
- 9:19Speaker 6: up with Boomer probably hates me more than he ever has.
- 9:21Speaker 6: I mean, we got a lot great boom around light
- 9:23Speaker 6: me anymore, I don't think, because I talk about him
- 9:25Speaker 6: every year about this. He went in the second round
- 9:27Speaker 6: after they took three players in the first round. They
- 9:30Speaker 6: love Boomer. If you love Boomer, these three picks weren't
- 9:33Speaker 6: in the top fifteen guys. They were. One was a
- 9:35Speaker 6: top ten pick, one was around twenty and one was
- 9:38Speaker 6: around twenty eight, and they didn't take Boomer. They took
- 9:41Speaker 6: him in the second round. Helped that turn out. A
- 9:44Speaker 6: couple of the guys went in the first robust, but
- 9:46Speaker 6: they took Boom. Say they liked them, they didn't love them.
- 9:48Speaker 6: You know, everybody loved Steve Young. They didn't love Boomer.
- 9:50Speaker 6: I did. I had Boomer in front on the front
- 9:53Speaker 6: page of my cover. He was the nineteen eighty four
- 9:55Speaker 6: draft report.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:57Speaker 6: We talked to Boomer that year. I was telling him
- 9:58Speaker 6: about Johnny and Nightis and Dan Fouth. Don't worry, Boomer,
- 10:01Speaker 6: You'll prove him wrong. Boober didn't want to hear any
- 10:03Speaker 6: of that nonsense. Shut the hell up, Typer. I don't
- 10:05Speaker 6: want to hear that up. I'm not happy right now.
- 10:08Speaker 6: So he came in with a little ship, and look
- 10:09Speaker 6: what happened. So the love and like thing I think
- 10:12Speaker 6: matters in the first round. From that, from the second
- 10:14Speaker 6: round one, it probably doesn't matter. Liking probably is good
- 10:16Speaker 6: enough at that point.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Nol on draft night, what do you think the floor
- 10:19Speaker 5: is for Jeremiah Love.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Jeremiah Love is, in my opinion, either one or two.
- 10:24Speaker 6: I put him in two because I really love Mendoza.
- 10:26Speaker 6: But you can put him at one and put Mendoza too.
- 10:28Speaker 6: He's arguably the best player in the draft. People say, well,
- 10:32Speaker 6: we don't take a running back. I said that thirty
- 10:35Speaker 6: years ago, when people.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Don't me, I was an idiot.
- 10:37Speaker 6: So now I'm saying, okay, I think you're idiots. You
- 10:41Speaker 6: don't think because you're idiots, because running backs are done.
- 10:46Speaker 6: The last bust in the top ten, I think was
- 10:48Speaker 6: Trent Richardson a while ago to Cleveland. It picked number three.
- 10:51Speaker 6: All those other running backs that have gone have been really,
- 10:53Speaker 6: really good, and people say, well they're second team, some
- 10:56Speaker 6: are some aren't thinking about the Super Bowl last couple
- 10:58Speaker 6: of years. Right, you know who key the teams a
- 11:00Speaker 6: running back did? Kenneth Walker did sa Quon So to
- 11:03Speaker 6: me and I get it. Pachecko was a seventh round pick.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Jeremiah Love was just a running back. He would not
- 11:10Speaker 6: be viewed that high and I wouldn't be advocating for him.
- 11:13Speaker 6: He's a wide receiver, he's a slot receiver. He didn't fumble.
- 11:17Speaker 6: He's a game breaker. He's a weapon. I always say
- 11:19Speaker 6: weapon equals what, guys, Weapons equal winning. You got enough weapons,
- 11:23Speaker 6: you win, right, and anything weapons equal winning. I want
- 11:27Speaker 6: Jeremiah Love on my team if I'm Tennessee at for,
- 11:30Speaker 6: I don't know how you pass them up. If he
- 11:32Speaker 6: gets down to seven to Washington. Now, I didn't want
- 11:34Speaker 6: to Tennessee at for an Adam schefter who knows that
- 11:36Speaker 6: a lot more about inside the NFL than I do.
- 11:39Speaker 6: Sure he said I was wrong. Tennessee is not taking
- 11:42Speaker 6: Jeremiah Love at four. I got another mock coming at him.
- 11:45Speaker 6: Im gonna I'll go back to Adam. Do you still
- 11:48Speaker 6: think that Adam I'm calling at him this weekend that
- 11:51Speaker 6: okay tomorrow or Sunday because he said no one Tennessee.
- 11:55Speaker 6: That mean you said, well, if it's not Jeremia Love,
- 11:57Speaker 6: who would have be probably Sunny Styles, linebacker from Ohio State,
- 12:00Speaker 6: who Robert Sala will see Fred Warner. Who's the comp
- 12:04Speaker 6: and I hate comps. I like the Fred Warner comp
- 12:06Speaker 6: to Sonny Styles. If he sees that, he said, I
- 12:09Speaker 6: could put him next to Cedria Gray. By the way, Taylor,
- 12:12Speaker 6: you know Cedria Gray, right linebacker North Carolina helmet doing
- 12:16Speaker 6: a really good job with Tennessee. Put him next to
- 12:18Speaker 6: Cedria Gray, and all of a sudden, Robert Sallas says, now,
- 12:21Speaker 6: I got a defense that can compliment cam Ward and
- 12:23Speaker 6: all the things we got going there. So there's a
- 12:26Speaker 6: debate if you're Tennessee three years from now. I was saying,
- 12:29Speaker 6: where's Jeremiah Love and where is Sonny Styles? Because Tennessee
- 12:33Speaker 6: a lot's gonna hinge on that pick to see where
- 12:35Speaker 6: Tennessee is a couple of years from now in terms,
- 12:36Speaker 6: so we are able to jump into that playoff contention.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'm not certain I've ever seen Taylor so happy. He
- 12:42Speaker 2: hasn't been this happy since sal was hosting.
- 12:44Speaker 1: The show yesterday. I mean, it's.
- 12:47Speaker 2: But Mel just having a conversation. Although it was a
- 12:49Speaker 2: one way conversation. I remember he went to Carolina, although
- 12:52Speaker 2: there's a Carolina helmet behind him.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Drags him braid by me. I might have been wrong,
- 12:57Speaker 6: but I gave him a draftable grade. I said it'd
- 12:59Speaker 6: be sixful. I did you know what was going to
- 13:01Speaker 6: be as next to you guys, I thought it might
- 13:03Speaker 6: be football. So I was successful. Hey, as long as
- 13:07Speaker 6: these guys making it broadcasting and I missed on them,
- 13:09Speaker 6: I'm still okay. Maybe there's a broadcaster. I gave him
- 13:11Speaker 6: a high grade. Hey, they might have been a disappointment
- 13:14Speaker 6: in terms of the NFL. And I had a few
- 13:15Speaker 6: like that guys that didn't develop in the NFL but
- 13:18Speaker 6: became great broadcasters.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:20Speaker 6: I'm okay, I said to be successful.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I didn't tell you what it was going to be
- 13:23Speaker 2: in Okay, Yes, Taylor send them the highlight reel from
- 13:25Speaker 2: your flag football.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I thought, break it down, Yeah, Mikey.
- 13:31Speaker 6: Mikey saw it, and Mikey told me he gave an
- 13:34Speaker 6: undrafted grade the right part of it. Don't even don't
- 13:38Speaker 6: even come to my camp what Mikey said. I thought
- 13:42Speaker 6: Taylor had a shot.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Right, Yes he did. You believed them, No one else did. Mel.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I believe me and you Mel.
- 13:49Speaker 2: But your original point about the running back is such
- 13:52Speaker 2: a good one, because, yes, the Seahawks were led by
- 13:55Speaker 2: a running back. Yes the running back won Super Bowl MVP,
- 13:57Speaker 2: but now they got rid.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Of them in the off season. He's with the Kansas
- 14:00Speaker 1: City Chiefs.
- 14:01Speaker 2: They didn't think highly enough of Kenneth Walker to pay
- 14:04Speaker 2: him the big dollars they needed to to keep Kenneth Walker.
- 14:06Speaker 1: So I think you're right about the running back of it.
- 14:08Speaker 2: It has to be a special type of player who
- 14:10Speaker 2: could do multiple things.
- 14:11Speaker 6: For you and Kenneth Walker was the second round pick.
- 14:14Speaker 6: So you know, you think about you think about the
- 14:16Speaker 6: year where Kansas City took Clyde Edwards Hilaire in the
- 14:20Speaker 6: first round and last pick in the first round. This
- 14:22Speaker 6: is where you can attack it different ways. Guys. They
- 14:24Speaker 6: took him last picking. You know, they passed up when
- 14:26Speaker 6: they took him, and he always you talk about Super Bowl.
- 14:28Speaker 6: He was there, so he did his good job. But
- 14:30Speaker 6: they passed up DeAndre Swift and Jonathan Taylor and he
- 14:33Speaker 6: went in the second round. So two really good backs
- 14:36Speaker 6: went in the second round. Jonathan Taylor, remember, had the
- 14:37Speaker 6: fumbeling issue at Wisconsin, dropped in the second round. Then
- 14:40Speaker 6: they come back, they they get Pachecko from Rutgers. He's
- 14:42Speaker 6: a Super Bowl run so he had a first, a
- 14:44Speaker 6: thirty second pick, seventh round pick. They done. But you
- 14:46Speaker 6: got Patrick Mahomes. You can win with anybody, right they
- 14:48Speaker 6: running guys, right if you got Patrick Mahomes healthy. So
- 14:51Speaker 6: Kansas City's kind of an outlier in that regard, but
- 14:53Speaker 6: that was always my fuck.
- 14:54Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:54Speaker 6: The running back that got that whole philosophy going way
- 14:57Speaker 6: back in the day was Thurman Thomas. Thurma Thoma was
- 15:00Speaker 6: a second round pick out of Oklahoma State. Well talent
- 15:02Speaker 6: should have been a first but he had some injury issues, right,
- 15:05Speaker 6: concerns about durability dropped to the second round. What we
- 15:08Speaker 6: were talking about Jordan Tyson and Arizona saying, durability, I
- 15:11Speaker 6: don't care. You see, it's football. You can get hurt,
- 15:13Speaker 6: then you can get hurt, and another year you're gonna
- 15:16Speaker 6: get hurt. That's football, right, it's durability. You think once
- 15:18Speaker 6: they're in the NFL they don't have durab they're gonna hurt.
- 15:21Speaker 6: So unfortunately, that's the nature of the game. So when
- 15:23Speaker 6: you look at that, Thurman Thomas, when I looked at it,
- 15:25Speaker 6: I said, Okay, let's see how many running backs starting
- 15:28Speaker 6: in the NFL went from the second round on at
- 15:30Speaker 6: that point, I believe it was twenty out of thirty two.
- 15:33Speaker 6: There were key guys at running backs, starters that went
- 15:35Speaker 6: in the second round on. If you can find guys
- 15:38Speaker 6: like that, I'm thinking that I read it every year
- 15:40Speaker 6: and I did that. Analytics. I call it analytics because
- 15:42Speaker 6: it lies, but it doesn't lie about that right. Funny
- 15:45Speaker 6: story I'm mentioned on one of these shows Analytics, and
- 15:49Speaker 6: now it's called analytics. No crap, I know what it's called.
- 15:55Speaker 6: I'm trying to say, a little play on words, is analytics.
- 16:00Speaker 6: Guy's corrected me, like I didn't know how to pronounce analytics.
- 16:03Speaker 6: I mean not a come on, it's not elytics in
- 16:06Speaker 6: some cases. Right yeah, running backs, I've written that, I've
- 16:11Speaker 6: been said. The bandwagon, whatever you want to call it,
- 16:13Speaker 6: is full, and now people are there's no room. I
- 16:17Speaker 6: already jumped off because now I'm kind of back on
- 16:20Speaker 6: this running back thing. But they got to be one word.
- 16:22Speaker 6: They got to be versatile. They got to be multi talented.
- 16:25Speaker 6: And Love's teammate Jedari and Price, who I really like,
- 16:27Speaker 6: is a running back boy. He had acts that line
- 16:29Speaker 6: of scrimmage. He goes, he's got game breaking ability returns kicks,
- 16:32Speaker 6: but he had some fumbles, crucial fumbles both years. He
- 16:36Speaker 6: also had limited opportunities catching the ball. So he's probably
- 16:39Speaker 6: a second round pick or he's great grated for me
- 16:42Speaker 6: as the second for that reason if he was back
- 16:43Speaker 6: at Notre Dame catching all his balls and then you
- 16:45Speaker 6: got him up there. But for right now, Jadarian Price
- 16:48Speaker 6: excellent running back. Can he be more and more multi
- 16:50Speaker 6: dimensional in the NFL as a receiver and also take
- 16:53Speaker 6: care of the ball security issues like Jonathan Taylor did.
- 16:56Speaker 4: We'll see mel I'm looking at this wide receipt draft class.
- 17:00Speaker 4: It reminds me a lot of twenty twenty, where you
- 17:03Speaker 4: had Rugs, you had Judy, you had Lamb, and it
- 17:06Speaker 4: seemed like everybody had them in different orders and they
- 17:09Speaker 4: were all going in different places. And I'm looking at Lemon,
- 17:12Speaker 4: Tyson and Tate and I've seen them go in in
- 17:16Speaker 4: every which way they could go.
- 17:17Speaker 3: How do you have them stacking up in this draft?
- 17:20Speaker 6: I haven't finalized that yet, And I said to a
- 17:21Speaker 6: couple weeks, so you can put them on a hat
- 17:23Speaker 6: and pick out of that and any order you come
- 17:25Speaker 6: up with. I don't anybody could argue with you know, one, two,
- 17:28Speaker 6: and three of those three guys. And I've seen it
- 17:30Speaker 6: all over the Why Because Lemon is a baller. He's
- 17:33Speaker 6: a fierce competitor, but he's not going to test great right.
- 17:37Speaker 6: Tate great polish character, blocks catches, but is he explosive enough.
- 17:43Speaker 6: And then you got Tyson, who is explosive, looks the part,
- 17:47Speaker 6: but he had the injury concerns. He said, we had
- 17:49Speaker 6: a few drops well says will drop a pass every
- 17:52Speaker 6: now and then at the end of the day. I
- 17:54Speaker 6: go back a few years ago when we had Jackson
- 17:57Speaker 6: Smith and jigba Za Flowers, Jordan added in Quinton Johnston.
- 18:01Speaker 6: We had four they were all a bunch together. There
- 18:03Speaker 6: were those that I respect that said none of those
- 18:05Speaker 6: four should be first round picks. Well, how did that
- 18:07Speaker 6: work out? That was a That was a comment that
- 18:09Speaker 6: didn't turn out to be correct. Three of those four
- 18:11Speaker 6: are big hits. You know Jackson Smith and jingbow Is
- 18:14Speaker 6: he one of the best in the league and one
- 18:15Speaker 6: offensive side of the ball day. Flower's doing a great
- 18:17Speaker 6: job in Baltimore. And you see what Addison and pet
- 18:19Speaker 6: Minnesota and Johnston is inconsistency with the catching the football,
- 18:23Speaker 6: but still a talent. So for me, they all went
- 18:25Speaker 6: around at twenty mark. So if you say the receivers
- 18:27Speaker 6: could drop a little bit, and I had Lemon going
- 18:29Speaker 6: twenty three to Cleveland or twenty four to Cleveland a
- 18:31Speaker 6: couple of weeks ago, people say, are you crazy, some
- 18:33Speaker 6: one of these receivers may drop something is gonna be Tyson.
- 18:36Speaker 6: I don't Lemon could possibly the receiver that you know,
- 18:40Speaker 6: I like him. I don't love him? Is Omar Cooper Junior?
- 18:43Speaker 6: Some love this kid out of Indiana back during the season.
- 18:46Speaker 6: I'm taking a boy.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I like him.
- 18:48Speaker 6: He runs hard after the catch, he's catching a ball.
- 18:51Speaker 6: He had a couple drops in a Maryland game, I
- 18:53Speaker 6: believe it was. And then you saw him, you know,
- 18:55Speaker 6: run great, but he didn't show super explosiveness. But he's
- 18:57Speaker 6: a good player. I thought third and I said, I'm
- 18:59Speaker 6: gonna him in a second round. I like Omar. Now
- 19:02Speaker 6: hear these mid first round things and that's when you say, WHOA.
- 19:05Speaker 6: I had him in a second. Now I'm seeing sixteen
- 19:07Speaker 6: to the Jets, and then Field Yeates is telling me, oh,
- 19:10Speaker 6: he's gonna go in the first round. Okay for a
- 19:12Speaker 6: mock draft, I'm gonna listen to that. I don't have
- 19:14Speaker 6: him grated as the first but Omar Cooper Junior has
- 19:16Speaker 6: kind of jumped into that mix. So to me, to
- 19:19Speaker 6: answer your question about the receivers, any one of those
- 19:22Speaker 6: three that you put number one on your board, I
- 19:24Speaker 6: don't know anybody could have an argument with it.
- 19:26Speaker 5: Mel Do you think Casey concepts you and can play
- 19:29Speaker 5: his way into the first round.
- 19:31Speaker 6: He's in that first round mix. He's in that first round,
- 19:33Speaker 6: mixes a slot receiver return man. Now he had some drops,
- 19:37Speaker 6: but he would always come back from that drops. If
- 19:39Speaker 6: a short stop makes an er in the first inning,
- 19:41Speaker 6: doesn't haunt him. And he has three errors, you know, no,
- 19:44Speaker 6: you know, I saw Gunnar Henderson that era of the year,
- 19:46Speaker 6: ain't it ain't about a gunner? Right, So the great
- 19:49Speaker 6: ones shake it off. Casey concept shown had some drops,
- 19:53Speaker 6: think it was seven total this year, but he bounced
- 19:55Speaker 6: back and he would not let it hamper him or
- 19:58Speaker 6: get into his mind the rest of that game. So
- 20:00Speaker 6: like the kid he was, I saw I met as
- 20:02Speaker 6: a truth what I do with my books. I had
- 20:04Speaker 6: the depth charts on Saturday and I put like all
- 20:07Speaker 6: kinds of march. You see books all marked up with
- 20:09Speaker 6: I see a guy who is a circle on my
- 20:11Speaker 6: ex him, I put a star. And those are the
- 20:13Speaker 6: true freshmen that really catch your eye and Sinsone was
- 20:17Speaker 6: Kevin Conception and then k C became he was a
- 20:19Speaker 6: guy at the NC State. Really wouj Over is a
- 20:22Speaker 6: true freshman that ends up at A and M. So yes,
- 20:25Speaker 6: he's he's probably I'd say it's about a seventy five
- 20:28Speaker 6: percent chance Taylor that he goes in the late first round,
- 20:31Speaker 6: and you say, ooh, the forty nine ers. You got
- 20:33Speaker 6: Miami there. Now you know you've got teams that could
- 20:36Speaker 6: go that route. New England. There's a lot of teams
- 20:38Speaker 6: that could look at KC conception because he also was
- 20:41Speaker 6: a heck of a punt returner. So I'll say late
- 20:43Speaker 6: first round for him.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Mike Ya, how much would you pay for one of
- 20:46Speaker 2: those marked up Melchiper draft books?
- 20:48Speaker 1: I mean, he.
- 20:50Speaker 6: Just yest I got. We're good friends with Prosper Trading guys,
- 20:56Speaker 6: Kim and I are. They're great Charlie Moon, Scott Bauer,
- 21:00Speaker 6: prop Fin and they sent me this big blue Prosper
- 21:03Speaker 6: Trading notebooks. Kim got one. I got one. I took Kim,
- 21:06Speaker 6: so I said, give me that because during the year,
- 21:08Speaker 6: I don't have to bring in here now every week
- 21:10Speaker 6: one it was the week two, week three, and I
- 21:14Speaker 6: just finished one book. One. I got through one book
- 21:17Speaker 6: through the year. I made sure one book was. I
- 21:19Speaker 6: got my second book, which was Kim sitting there. So
- 21:21Speaker 6: Charlie and Scott sent me a couple more books. The
- 21:23Speaker 6: Prosper training books are phenomenal, but that's what I have
- 21:25Speaker 6: all my notes in from the week. So what do
- 21:27Speaker 6: I do now, Guys, when we're hearing all this stuff
- 21:29Speaker 6: about pro Day's and combine, I go back to that.
- 21:32Speaker 6: It is a blue book, actually blue, and my book
- 21:35Speaker 6: back in the day was blue. The draft board was.
- 21:37Speaker 6: I go back that. I see because you forget during
- 21:39Speaker 6: the year the note you had and who you liked.
- 21:41Speaker 6: You get kind of get lost in space here with
- 21:44Speaker 6: all the stuff going on. You say, boys, too many opinions.
- 21:47Speaker 3: How about this guy?
- 21:48Speaker 6: Yeah, how about that guy? I remember, Max tom Zach.
- 21:51Speaker 6: Max tom Zak got a Youngstown said it kind of
- 21:53Speaker 6: liked them. I got to put him in where he
- 21:55Speaker 6: has a seventh round pick when undrafted free agent. I'm
- 21:57Speaker 6: gonna put him in a nice range here. I'm not
- 21:59Speaker 6: gonna forget about tom Zach, who I like. There's an
- 22:01Speaker 6: orange crusher for me back in October coming out of
- 22:03Speaker 6: Youngstown State. I go back to those notes. I did
- 22:06Speaker 6: it the other day, and I'm telling you what, guys,
- 22:09Speaker 6: you realize, boy, you might have you really lucky you
- 22:12Speaker 6: had those notes because you kind of forgot about some
- 22:13Speaker 6: guys that you Trust what you saw when the games
- 22:16Speaker 6: were being played, Trust what your eyes told you, and
- 22:19Speaker 6: we do. We always do that exercise for a reason.
- 22:22Speaker 6: If I'm not going to go back and look at
- 22:24Speaker 6: that book, what the hell am I sitting there on
- 22:25Speaker 6: Saturday's watching these games? Write those notes now for right?
- 22:28Speaker 6: So you gotta go back. You can't forget about what
- 22:30Speaker 6: you spent all those hours on Saturday and Sunday doing.
- 22:33Speaker 6: At this time of the year.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Mel, I have one more draft question than I want
- 22:37Speaker 4: to hear about Grandpa Mel and orange crushes. But nobody
- 22:41Speaker 4: watches more film than you Mail, So I'm curious, as
- 22:44Speaker 4: you're watching film for this draft class, who's the guy
- 22:47Speaker 4: that stole the show? Every time you put on you
- 22:49Speaker 4: put on the team, you put on the tape to
- 22:51Speaker 4: watch this quarterback.
- 22:52Speaker 3: And this guy you can't take your eyes off him.
- 22:55Speaker 3: You go to watch this tape and you can't stop
- 22:58Speaker 3: watching it.
- 22:58Speaker 6: The other guy, I'll tell you all year. For me,
- 23:02Speaker 6: it was Sonny Styles. And Sonny Styles jumped out at
- 23:07Speaker 6: you because he was so much improved in terms of tackling,
- 23:11Speaker 6: and that was the question coming into the year. It
- 23:13Speaker 6: was a former safety had some issues with misstackles in
- 23:15Speaker 6: twenty twenty four, then watched them in the Texas game. Remember,
- 23:20Speaker 6: arch Manning was supposed to go to Columbus and win
- 23:22Speaker 6: that game. Arch Manning was supposed to be the number
- 23:23Speaker 6: one picking this draft. The arch was supposed won a
- 23:25Speaker 6: Heisman in lead Texas to a national title. Right, he
- 23:27Speaker 6: was supposed hit the trifecta? Who hit the trifecta? Fernando
- 23:30Speaker 6: Mendoza did, right, But Arch was supposed to be that
- 23:33Speaker 6: guy first game at Columbus who got the best of
- 23:36Speaker 6: them The Ohio State defense did with Matt Patricia Right,
- 23:39Speaker 6: Sonny Styles arval Reis had a sack in that game too.
- 23:41Speaker 6: But Sonny Styles throughout the year kept saying, Okay, let's
- 23:44Speaker 6: see if the mistackles end. He eliminated misstackles guys, then
- 23:49Speaker 6: he tests I'd say, off the charts, freakish, rare to
- 23:53Speaker 6: do what he did in a workout. So for me,
- 23:56Speaker 6: when you watched him, it was a guy that they
- 23:58Speaker 6: had him playing all over and he would so he
- 24:00Speaker 6: closed so quickly like a cat. That boy, Sonny Styles
- 24:04Speaker 6: really was that player. I think on the defensive side.
- 24:06Speaker 6: Well that's what I say for the jetsit too. You
- 24:07Speaker 6: got to consider them for Tennessee at forty you have
- 24:09Speaker 6: to doing if he's there for Washington. You have to
- 24:11Speaker 6: Sonny Styles is if you say so, we're arguably you
- 24:14Speaker 6: could put him as the second best player in this draft.
- 24:17Speaker 6: You could say he was the best player in this
- 24:18Speaker 6: draft and nobody would have a problem with that. I
- 24:20Speaker 6: don't believe.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Now, who's the best left tackle in the draft.
- 24:24Speaker 6: That's a great question because I don't think you can
- 24:27Speaker 6: really feel confident about the answer. I think it should
- 24:31Speaker 6: be kateen Procter. But the inconsistencies with focus and concentration lapses,
- 24:36Speaker 6: with penalties, letting guys that you shouldn't have beat you
- 24:39Speaker 6: beat you, and I call them aogs. There are another
- 24:42Speaker 6: occupation guys they're not going to be playing in the NFL,
- 24:44Speaker 6: and you're if you can't handle them, or you go. Now,
- 24:47Speaker 6: he did handle those guys ninety percent of time. But
- 24:50Speaker 6: you can't have concentration lapses in the NFL. You can't.
- 24:53Speaker 6: So you got to play up to that talent. You
- 24:55Speaker 6: got to be focused every snap. If he can do that,
- 24:57Speaker 6: Kate Proctor is the best left tackle potential in another
- 25:01Speaker 6: year based on coaching whose offensive line coaches are the
- 25:04Speaker 6: most critical aspect of a football team at any level.
- 25:08Speaker 6: Monroe Freeling from George is the guy if you had
- 25:10Speaker 6: the old lt P as I call him, look the
- 25:12Speaker 6: part guys as a left tackle would be Monroe Freeling.
- 25:15Speaker 6: The size, the length of feet, did good in past
- 25:17Speaker 6: bro struggle a little bit as a run blocker, but
- 25:19Speaker 6: got better only seventeen starts. I wish he had another
- 25:22Speaker 6: year because I think would have been a top two
- 25:23Speaker 6: three pick. Somebody's gonna get Monroe fil if you can
- 25:26Speaker 6: develop him, and the offensive line coach is gonna be
- 25:29Speaker 6: I'm gonna grade that offensive line coach in three years.
- 25:31Speaker 6: Whoever draft them their O line coach, How did he
- 25:33Speaker 6: do with Monroe Freeling? Because that has a chance to
- 25:35Speaker 6: be really, really good.
- 25:37Speaker 1: So you're grading the line coach.
- 25:38Speaker 6: Now, Hey, I said, hey, I said this about Tyler
- 25:42Speaker 6: Smith when he came out.
- 25:43Speaker 7: Said wow, there's.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Another penalty of Tyler Smith.
- 25:45Speaker 6: Right, Wow, another penalty. That's what happened to Tulsa.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 25:49Speaker 6: They needed to fix that, eliminate the penalties, which is
- 25:52Speaker 6: usually concentration lapses, whatever you want to call it. Tyler
- 25:55Speaker 6: Smith became a Dallas cowboy. You don't hear about many
- 25:58Speaker 6: problems with penalties anymore. Mentioned Jonathan Taylor. Why did he
- 26:01Speaker 6: drop to the second round? Had fumbling issues? Don't see
- 26:03Speaker 6: that anymore?
- 26:04Speaker 7: Right?
- 26:05Speaker 6: You got to talk about when drafte Why a guy dropped?
- 26:08Speaker 6: What does he have to fix? Okay, we ought to
- 26:10Speaker 6: fix something. You guys ought to fix something to get
- 26:12Speaker 6: where you are. You're all stars, but you weren't. You
- 26:13Speaker 6: got to fix something to get where you are. On
- 26:15Speaker 6: the air, right, what are you fixing? What's going to be?
- 26:18Speaker 1: Well?
- 26:19Speaker 6: The offensive line coach work with Monroe Frilling to make
- 26:21Speaker 6: him a great left tackle. We'll see, right.
- 26:24Speaker 2: I love you grading the coaches after they take guys
- 26:26Speaker 2: that you love.
- 26:26Speaker 1: It's so good. Please do it. That's awesome.
- 26:36Speaker 5: You know how sustainable do you think Taylor Ward started
- 26:39Speaker 5: for the Orioles batting three eighty three?
- 26:42Speaker 7: Question?
- 26:42Speaker 1: That is a good question.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Looking at him, light up, Look at him, light up.
- 26:47Speaker 6: I'm gonna say my favorite pitcher, Kyle Bradish. Sorry, you
- 26:50Speaker 6: get it, the guys, because Kyle's he had the Timmy
- 26:53Speaker 6: John surgery. You had a couple of early starts where
- 26:55Speaker 6: he had some struggles. Rogers has been like you was
- 26:58Speaker 6: last year, pretty much lights out. But the you know,
- 27:00Speaker 6: the pitching staff, I'm all big into pitching. I grew
- 27:02Speaker 6: up as a Baltimorial fan with Palmer McNally, qua Or
- 27:05Speaker 6: and Dops in the fourth twenty game winners, which we'll
- 27:06Speaker 6: never ever see again. So I grew up in that era.
- 27:09Speaker 6: I hope he keeps it going. I the bat's gunner,
- 27:12Speaker 6: and the guys there in the LINEO, I'm I'm a
- 27:14Speaker 6: pitching guy. You gotta have a great pitching and I'm
- 27:17Speaker 6: hoping a wild cards possible. We were all hoping that
- 27:20Speaker 6: this year we'll see I'm not conceding anything to the Yankees,
- 27:23Speaker 6: but hey, I'm realistic. At best, you're a possible wildcard
- 27:27Speaker 6: and we'll see what happens. But let's hope it can
- 27:29Speaker 6: stay whereas it was jumping around. What is it now?
- 27:32Speaker 6: You say three eighty three eighty three?
- 27:35Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, I'll be.
- 27:37Speaker 6: Happy if it stays around three hundred.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Okay, right.
- 27:41Speaker 6: Way, guys, this is this analytics nonsense, right, Can you
- 27:44Speaker 6: just gim me a batty average home runs and our
- 27:46Speaker 6: analyticsmell RBIs. Remember today I said, I said, it's it's Ribby's.
- 27:53Speaker 6: It's not Ribby. So I said it's not staking, right.
- 27:56Speaker 6: So when I started saying RB, I S and RB
- 27:58Speaker 6: I S I think we're getting to a problem part
- 28:00Speaker 6: time period here right that starting to go and go
- 28:03Speaker 6: and go. Now we got oh this, I'm LTP or this.
- 28:06Speaker 6: I got a lot of stuff you got. I don't
- 28:07Speaker 6: know what the heck they're talking about. He just give
- 28:09Speaker 6: me Home Runs RBIs Patty.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Averageive me that?
- 28:14Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean all this other stuff, I don't know
- 28:16Speaker 6: what the hell are talking about.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So I don't know what.
- 28:17Speaker 6: I can't relate to those numbers. Can you give me
- 28:20Speaker 6: a historical perspective? Not because it doesn't exist in the sixties, seventies,
- 28:23Speaker 6: and eighties. I don't have a dag on about that crap.
- 28:25Speaker 6: Just give me what I want to see that I
- 28:27Speaker 6: can con the past years because I'm old. I remember
- 28:29Speaker 6: the sixties. Maybe these kids that do analytic stone I do.
- 28:33Speaker 6: But I can't compare anything and else see it.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I love you, Taylor.
- 28:38Speaker 6: That stuff.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Jeez, Taylor, do me a favor and cut that next
- 28:40Speaker 4: time we do. Do me a favor on the radio show.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Just play that. That's what I want now. Quick story
- 28:46Speaker 4: for you. I went to see our friend Frank Kelliendo
- 28:49Speaker 4: live up here in Connecticut, and at the end of
- 28:53Speaker 4: his set, he said, you know, a lot of people
- 28:55Speaker 4: come out. They expect to hear certain impersonations, and I
- 28:59Speaker 4: like to leave a few minutes so.
- 29:00Speaker 3: That we could do whatever you want.
- 29:02Speaker 4: So whatever you guys want, shout it out, and I
- 29:04Speaker 4: swear to you mail ninety five percent of the place
- 29:07Speaker 4: all yelled out in unison at the same time mel
- 29:10Speaker 4: Kuiper and we goes, well for those of you who
- 29:12Speaker 4: don't know who mel Kuiper is, and everybody went, we
- 29:14Speaker 4: all know.
- 29:17Speaker 3: And then he gave me seventeen Todds in a row.
- 29:20Speaker 6: He gave at least ten minutes of that. Right, you say,
- 29:23Speaker 6: give me ten minutes on an answer, I think Frank
- 29:24Speaker 6: will give me ten minutes than me. And he started
- 29:27Speaker 6: to its Todd. It's Todd is. I will tell you
- 29:30Speaker 6: to this day if you get taught that he hates
- 29:33Speaker 6: that because he goes every stadium he goes into. Now,
- 29:35Speaker 6: when he was doing every stadium, he walks into him
- 29:38Speaker 6: and he walks around there yelling TI to to to Todd.
- 29:40Speaker 6: So yeah, that was that was all Frank. I had
- 29:42Speaker 6: nothing to I did always say, which I always know
- 29:44Speaker 6: Mikey knows this. I always say your name a lot
- 29:47Speaker 6: when I'm talking to you. All right, I don't forget
- 29:49Speaker 6: who I'm talking to. I like to talk about their name,
- 29:51Speaker 6: and it makes more than one on one. I always see.
- 29:54Speaker 6: That's just just a habit, I guess right. Yes, So
- 29:56Speaker 6: Todd picked up on that. He said, No, I've never
- 29:58Speaker 6: talked to anybody in my life. Man, I always like
- 30:00Speaker 6: my name, Todd, I don't like my name, and you
- 30:03Speaker 6: say it all the time. That's just so. Frank picked
- 30:06Speaker 6: up on that from.
- 30:10Speaker 1: You said Taylor's name.
- 30:11Speaker 2: He was He's still beating, which.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Is forty time.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Mitchel, just quickly on the way out here. You are
- 30:29Speaker 1: the greatest check guy. His work everywhere.
- 30:33Speaker 6: Yes, by the way, that man is amazing.
- 30:36Speaker 1: He loves you so much Mel.
- 30:38Speaker 6: Have to say about him.
- 30:40Speaker 2: It's flattering when he does that. Right, you don't care,
- 30:42Speaker 2: I mean, you don't take yourself that seriously.
- 30:44Speaker 6: Whatever. You guys can make me look like the clown
- 30:46Speaker 6: show that I probably am most of the time, and
- 30:48Speaker 6: I'm happy to say it. Okay, I'm happy to see it.
- 30:52Speaker 6: There's not a scathing article I haven't seen so anything
- 30:55Speaker 6: you Taylor. If you want to write a bad article
- 30:57Speaker 6: about me, you want to do it.
- 30:59Speaker 1: It can't be a.
- 31:00Speaker 6: Worst pill or anything I've ever seen over the last
- 31:02Speaker 6: fifty years.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Okay, he would never.
- 31:04Speaker 6: I'm kind of like oblivious to it. Nothing. The bruises
- 31:08Speaker 6: are all here. You can't bruise me anymore. Okay, I've
- 31:11Speaker 6: bruised and battered, so nothing scathing can come out of
- 31:14Speaker 6: any worse than I was seen over the last fifty years.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Did you get down to Florida for spring training? We
- 31:19Speaker 1: missed you. Did you get down there?
- 31:21Speaker 6: The schedule would not allow it to I say this,
- 31:25Speaker 6: I told you this one of my bucket list right
- 31:28Speaker 6: back to day they would bucket list. I say, one
- 31:30Speaker 6: of your bucket list things to do is be it
- 31:32Speaker 6: spring training?
- 31:33Speaker 1: Right?
- 31:33Speaker 6: Well, since I was eighteen, I've been doing the draft
- 31:36Speaker 6: stuff right eighteen Okay, so from eighteen to sixty six
- 31:40Speaker 6: coming up, there's no chance, right, So at some point
- 31:45Speaker 6: I couldn't do it before eighteen in high school doing
- 31:47Speaker 6: my stuff, right, So then you say, after sixty six,
- 31:50Speaker 6: is there's going to be a chance to get me
- 31:51Speaker 6: to Florida, Not Arizona, but Florida for spring tres When
- 31:54Speaker 6: I was in school, I always look at it. I said,
- 31:56Speaker 6: I wish it. One O five, I was in Sarasota, today,
- 31:59Speaker 6: or I wish I was in dan Eden. I wish
- 32:01Speaker 6: I was down there today. I would see that when
- 32:02Speaker 6: in the newspaper now Baltimore Morning Sun paper, i'd see that, say,
- 32:05Speaker 6: man at one o five, what I wish I was
- 32:07Speaker 6: in Florida's sit down there in the class room. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:12Speaker 6: that'd love to be love to be down there for
- 32:15Speaker 6: the for the grapefruit leg in March.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Yes. Uh, you mentioned guys who looked the part.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Is there a guy you can recall from all the
- 32:22Speaker 2: years you've been doing this who most looked the part
- 32:24Speaker 2: that ended up not playing the part very well?
- 32:27Speaker 6: It's a great question.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Oh God, that's a good one.
- 32:33Speaker 6: Well, yeah, thanks, I think to him. But I think
- 32:35Speaker 6: in terms of looking the part, I'd say probably if.
- 32:38Speaker 1: You go to JaMarcus Russell, maybe I don't know.
- 32:42Speaker 6: Yeah, he definitely you know he had the best pro
- 32:44Speaker 6: day ever for.
- 32:46Speaker 1: The part.
- 32:47Speaker 6: Who I always ask you guys, i'let me give you
- 32:49Speaker 6: a quick quiz if the worst pro day, If the
- 32:52Speaker 6: best prote ever was Tomarcus Russell, who had the worst?
- 32:55Speaker 6: I told you, I've told you guys this time. You
- 32:59Speaker 6: can't my class, guys, you gotta get the great in
- 33:02Speaker 6: my class. I'm gonna be the teacher here, I'm the professor.
- 33:05Speaker 6: I've mentioned this one hundred times. Who had the worst
- 33:08Speaker 6: Pro Day ever?
- 33:09Speaker 1: Peyton Manning? I mean, I.
- 33:12Speaker 6: Got it, Ayton Manning, wild believe, I got a call
- 33:15Speaker 6: from it, wil believe, balls not get it done, arm
- 33:19Speaker 6: and say. And that's when I heard the comment if
- 33:21Speaker 6: his name was Peyton Jones would be a third round pick.
- 33:23Speaker 6: That was Peyton the pro day, right, JaMarcus Russell had
- 33:26Speaker 6: the best Pro day ever. I look back. The guy
- 33:29Speaker 6: I thought was going to be great. It was Tony
- 33:32Speaker 6: Mandridge back in the day.
- 33:34Speaker 2: And Tony yeahs illustrated.
- 33:37Speaker 6: Yeah, And to Tony's credit, what happened. He ended up
- 33:39Speaker 6: moving to guard with the Colts and ended up having
- 33:42Speaker 6: some good years. Right, So he was always a bust
- 33:44Speaker 6: to left tackle everybody and grated ahead of Troy Eightman
- 33:47Speaker 6: that year and eighty nine, all that stuff. Tony Mandridge say,
- 33:51Speaker 6: recovered and became a heck of a guard and it
- 33:54Speaker 6: wasn't a bust as a guard looked like I remember
- 33:57Speaker 6: on the league I said, Tony Mandress is the perfect
- 34:00Speaker 6: perfect left tackle in the NFL.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh, Taylor put it on the poll.
- 34:04Speaker 2: If Peyton Manning's last name was Jones, would he have
- 34:06Speaker 2: been a third round pick?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Greaty, Now we appreciate it. Check it out.
- 34:13Speaker 2: He'll be all over from now until uh well, for
- 34:16Speaker 2: the next ten days. He'll be all over.
- 34:18Speaker 6: Ye been since late July. I got to correct you,
- 34:22Speaker 6: Vin since late July. At warned people out, says late July.
- 34:25Speaker 6: And he got me out of the pool. He got
- 34:27Speaker 6: me off the beach, got me off my range crushes
- 34:29Speaker 6: and crab cakes to drag me in from the pool,
- 34:31Speaker 6: from the beach and doing the first raft podcast in July.
- 34:36Speaker 6: We started the first raft podcast. Me and my great
- 34:38Speaker 6: friend Field Yate started AT in late July. So we've
- 34:40Speaker 6: been trunks and I think people have seen enough of
- 34:42Speaker 6: be mine now. I would think him, guess what if
- 34:44Speaker 6: you have, You're gonna see a lot more. So you're
- 34:47Speaker 6: right still with the time has come. But well for me,
- 34:49Speaker 6: I can't get the what's it two weeks from two
- 34:51Speaker 6: weeks from day we'll be getting ready for day two,
- 34:53Speaker 6: right or whatever. I don't know when you're gonna hear
- 34:55Speaker 6: this thing. It might be over by the time you
- 34:56Speaker 6: have this thing. You might I don't care about this
- 34:59Speaker 6: Ti line is whatever time this airs, uh, it's gonna
- 35:02Speaker 6: be close enough where I'll be happy to get this
- 35:04Speaker 6: thing rolling.
- 35:05Speaker 2: There's never enough. Mikey A texted me during this saying
- 35:08Speaker 2: he could listen to you all day. I said, all day,
- 35:10Speaker 2: every day. It never gets old day.
- 35:12Speaker 8: We'll never get off.
- 35:14Speaker 6: I gotta I gotta read some of those articles, and
- 35:16Speaker 6: people will say, can you just eliminate him from your
- 35:19Speaker 6: podcast forever? Okay, in the retirement. I've been That's what
- 35:23Speaker 6: I've been told. Can you send him in the retirement.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I'd rather lose my ENTIRONI don't care. I don't care. Now,
- 35:33Speaker 1: all right, get out of here.
- 35:34Speaker 2: We look forward to you watching you on the NFL
- 35:37Speaker 2: Draft two weeks from now.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Yes, no, thank you for the time. We appreciate it,
- 35:41Speaker 1: but we know you're busy.
- 35:42Speaker 8: Appreciate your mouth.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Thanks guys, our friend field Yates always finds time for us,
- 35:51Speaker 2: even during the busiest time on his calendar. It is
- 35:55Speaker 2: draft week, my friend. Look at that smile. It's a
- 35:58Speaker 2: smile of I can't wait for the dreams. And also
- 36:00Speaker 2: I am fucking tired of talking about the draft.
- 36:03Speaker 9: It's what funny I've had the debate I actually was
- 36:05Speaker 9: talking to Kuiper last night, and as we we're debating
- 36:08Speaker 9: whether we're more excited for the draft to be here,
- 36:11Speaker 9: I'm more excited for the draft.
- 36:13Speaker 8: To be over. And we both agreed probably for the
- 36:16Speaker 8: draft to be over.
- 36:17Speaker 9: You know, Mel lives in the land of pleasant living
- 36:20Speaker 9: down there and you know, the shores of Maryland. So
- 36:23Speaker 9: for him, assuming mother Nature cooperates, a summer of time
- 36:27Speaker 9: on the boat and all the other great amenities the
- 36:30Speaker 9: Kuiper compound has available, is just around the corner. I
- 36:34Speaker 9: live in Connecticut where it's currently forty six degrees, so
- 36:37Speaker 9: it's formed up. So we're probably another month away from
- 36:41Speaker 9: pleasant living like Mel gets to experience very soon.
- 36:44Speaker 8: But I'm ready for the draft to be over.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Fieldy, you spent months writing all this stuff up, preparing
- 36:51Speaker 4: all this mock drafts.
- 36:53Speaker 3: This guy's right up, this guy's right up.
- 36:55Speaker 4: And then Thursday, Friday, Saturday, come, do you just take
- 36:58Speaker 4: all those papers and just throw them out like what happens?
- 37:00Speaker 9: Then?
- 37:01Speaker 6: Yeah, it is a very cleansing feeling.
- 37:04Speaker 7: You know.
- 37:04Speaker 9: The interesting part about the draft is that the past
- 37:08Speaker 9: few year ago, call it two weeks, probably maybe a
- 37:10Speaker 9: little longer than that, has not really been a bunch
- 37:13Speaker 9: of preparation, Like I haven't been pouring over tape on
- 37:16Speaker 9: guys for the past two weeks like I was previously.
- 37:19Speaker 8: It's more just like getting a scan on guys that
- 37:22Speaker 8: you haven't watched.
- 37:23Speaker 9: A little while, or some of the Day three guys
- 37:25Speaker 9: that are just lesser known prospects that you haven't put
- 37:28Speaker 9: as much energy into because you're probably only going to
- 37:31Speaker 9: be talking about them during the draft broadcast. The Sports
- 37:34Speaker 9: Center is not asking me for my favorite, you know,
- 37:36Speaker 9: sixth round linebacker from a non power conference school, right.
- 37:43Speaker 9: But the past couple of weeks has been a lot of,
- 37:44Speaker 9: like you know, gathering information around the NFL from people
- 37:48Speaker 9: and their opinions on where things are with guys. So
- 37:51Speaker 9: it feels like what I spent a lot of my
- 37:52Speaker 9: energy doing leading up to the draft is speculating with people.
- 37:57Speaker 9: But I realized that my favorite, and I think we
- 37:59Speaker 9: tell done this a bit the last time I was
- 38:01Speaker 9: on the show, is the best part of the draft
- 38:03Speaker 9: is the idea that we have no idea what's going
- 38:06Speaker 9: to happen and getting to enjoy how it all plays out.
- 38:09Speaker 9: We know f Nanda Mendoza is going number one, and
- 38:11Speaker 9: we have some leans on picks thereafter. But it just
- 38:14Speaker 9: takes one domino to create amazing ripple effects. So that
- 38:19Speaker 9: to me is that I'm looking most forward to over
- 38:21Speaker 9: the three days coming.
- 38:22Speaker 6: Up this weekend.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Check out the podcast First Draft with Field, Mel Kiper Junior,
- 38:27Speaker 2: and Mike Greenberg.
- 38:28Speaker 1: It's fantastic. Have you been to the Kuiper Compound?
- 38:31Speaker 9: Never been, but we were talking about making a trip
- 38:33Speaker 9: down there. When I say me, basically, I mean not
- 38:37Speaker 9: my entire family, but maybe me and one of my kids,
- 38:39Speaker 9: one of my kids.
- 38:39Speaker 8: We're discussing it.
- 38:40Speaker 9: I don't know if I could bring all of them,
- 38:41Speaker 9: but there's negotiations going on right now. Mel says it's amazing,
- 38:45Speaker 9: and I hear nothing to dissuade me from that bought.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Well, I think what he finds amazing about it is
- 38:50Speaker 2: no one ever gets to go to it. He doesn't
- 38:52Speaker 2: want anyone there. And so are you having these conversations
- 38:55Speaker 2: with Mel or just with family members?
- 38:57Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, this is.
- 38:59Speaker 9: Mostly Mel, but you're right, like Mel will offer me
- 39:03Speaker 9: until the end of time the opportunity to come down
- 39:06Speaker 9: to his home, which is not near anything other than
- 39:09Speaker 9: his own home. Meanwhile, ESPN is not far from where
- 39:13Speaker 9: I live. It does not matter how much time Mel
- 39:15Speaker 9: spends up at ESPN. I'm not sure he's never going
- 39:18Speaker 9: to make it in my house right because he wants
- 39:20Speaker 9: to go to work, he wants to go back to
- 39:22Speaker 9: the hotel and wants to wake up the next day
- 39:24Speaker 9: and get in an airplane or get in.
- 39:25Speaker 6: A car and drive home.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting because you have the open invite. It
- 39:29Speaker 2: seems like I was in Maryland that was right by
- 39:31Speaker 2: Mel's house. I told him I was coming over for
- 39:33Speaker 2: the day and he said he's leaving.
- 39:34Speaker 1: So I may come on.
- 39:35Speaker 8: Come on their game this weekend when we have going
- 39:38Speaker 8: on in Maryland.
- 39:39Speaker 2: They were playing Maryland's on the road last week. They
- 39:42Speaker 2: beat him number one on the road. They beat UNC
- 39:45Speaker 2: number one on the road. They just beat Michigan. I'm
- 39:47Speaker 2: telling you they are peaking at the right time. You
- 39:49Speaker 2: know what I'm saying.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Field?
- 39:51Speaker 6: How about that?
- 39:52Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 39:53Speaker 7: Look good that he has more.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Rings than the rants? I mean, what can I tell you?
- 40:00Speaker 8: And I love our legacy talk with due? Yes?
- 40:03Speaker 2: All right, So let's get into this draft here, because
- 40:06Speaker 2: there are some fascinating parts of it, even though not
- 40:09Speaker 2: a ton of big names. Let's start with the trade
- 40:11Speaker 2: that the Bengals made with the Giants. Before we get
- 40:13Speaker 2: to the actual Who's going where were you surprised?
- 40:16Speaker 1: How surprised were you that the Bengals, who never do
- 40:19Speaker 1: this sort of.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Thing, They haven't traded a top ten pick since like
- 40:23Speaker 2: nineteen sixty six, I think was the year I read yesterday.
- 40:27Speaker 2: How surprised were you that the Bengals made this trade?
- 40:30Speaker 8: Extremely surprised given the cost.
- 40:33Speaker 9: So I thought, when the Bengals, I'm sorry, when the
- 40:36Speaker 9: Giants put Dexter Lawrence sort of on the block, not officially,
- 40:39Speaker 9: but when they acknowledge contract negotiations were a problem and
- 40:43Speaker 9: he expressed his discontent, I thought, hey, maybe some team
- 40:47Speaker 9: will give him a second round pick.
- 40:49Speaker 8: But I did not think they would get a top
- 40:52Speaker 8: ten pick.
- 40:52Speaker 9: I thought maybe a team towards the end of the
- 40:55Speaker 9: first round, if Buffalo had all the financial flexibility you
- 40:59Speaker 9: need to acquire a player like Dexter Lawrence, maybe Buffalo
- 41:03Speaker 9: would take on Dexter Lawrence for the cost of a
- 41:07Speaker 9: low first round pick, and they would say, this is
- 41:09Speaker 9: our icing on the cake.
- 41:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 41:11Speaker 9: Think about some of the notable plays that have cost
- 41:13Speaker 9: Buffalo in the postseason in recent years. Game of inchest
- 41:17Speaker 9: for them. Cincinnati has the tenth pick in the draft,
- 41:21Speaker 9: which I get at. Joe Burrow missed a lot of
- 41:23Speaker 9: time last year. I didn't think this team was just
- 41:26Speaker 9: Dexter Lawrence away from competing. I also think that, well,
- 41:30Speaker 9: this draft is not good, and I acknowledge that the
- 41:34Speaker 9: tenth overall pick in this draft compared to tenth overall
- 41:36Speaker 9: pick in prior drafts, not as valuable. There's still the chance,
- 41:40Speaker 9: the idea of the concept that you have the tenth
- 41:43Speaker 9: pick that immediately comes with five years of contract control
- 41:48Speaker 9: and a fraction of the costs. As a matter of fact,
- 41:50Speaker 9: I'm just going to look up quickly. JJ McCarthy was
- 41:52Speaker 9: the tenth pick in the draft two years ago, so
- 41:55Speaker 9: it'll be a slight inflation. But JJ signed for four
- 41:58Speaker 9: years and call it twenty two million bucks that fifth
- 42:01Speaker 9: year team options. So I'm so this year's first tenth
- 42:05Speaker 9: overall pick will be something like four years and probably
- 42:08Speaker 9: twenty three and.
- 42:09Speaker 8: A half million bucks.
- 42:11Speaker 9: Like, that's less than six million dollars per year for
- 42:14Speaker 9: a guy that's younger, and I don't know that'll be
- 42:17Speaker 9: better than Dexter Lawrence. He may get there in time.
- 42:20Speaker 9: It probably won't be out of the gates. I just
- 42:22Speaker 9: am surprised by the heavy handedness by Cincinnati. I think
- 42:25Speaker 9: it's a great deal obviously for the Giants. This is
- 42:28Speaker 9: a player who was not happy. This is a team
- 42:31Speaker 9: that needs a lot of work, and they now have
- 42:33Speaker 9: two top ten picks. They don't control the draft, but
- 42:36Speaker 9: they're about as any as influential as any team in
- 42:39Speaker 9: the top ten. Now, given that nobody else can boast
- 42:42Speaker 9: those two top ten picks.
- 42:44Speaker 1: What do you expect them to do with those picks?
- 42:47Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, there's been a lot of buzz about
- 42:49Speaker 9: them being a wide receiver team. I do think this though,
- 42:53Speaker 9: and I could see that I'm not dismissing that possibility
- 42:55Speaker 9: at all. Jordan Tyson being the name you've heard connected
- 42:57Speaker 9: to the Giants right the most, the two top ten
- 43:00Speaker 9: picks to me allow this Giants team to do like
- 43:05Speaker 9: it's the John Harbaugh show, right Like Josha is still.
- 43:08Speaker 8: A part of this.
- 43:09Speaker 9: But John Harbaugh, if I guess that if we're breaking
- 43:12Speaker 9: ties here, it's probably gonna be what John Harbaugh wants.
- 43:15Speaker 9: And I think that John Harbad now has the opportunity
- 43:17Speaker 9: to build this thing, which I think is the way
- 43:19Speaker 9: that he wants to do, which is how the Ravens
- 43:22Speaker 9: have operated and how a lot of successful teams have operated,
- 43:25Speaker 9: which is best player available, right, we are not going
- 43:28Speaker 9: to be totally beholden to needs. We're going to be
- 43:31Speaker 9: taking players that we think belong in the top five ish,
- 43:35Speaker 9: in the top ten ish at five.
- 43:36Speaker 8: And ten overall. So pretty much any Ohio States defensive
- 43:41Speaker 8: player would make.
- 43:42Speaker 9: Some sense for the Giants. Sonny Styles, r L Reese,
- 43:45Speaker 9: Caleb Downs, they'd make a difference for this roster. The
- 43:48Speaker 9: offensive line to me screams potential number ten pick. This
- 43:53Speaker 9: is a team that they can be fine lining up
- 43:56Speaker 9: for a game tomorrow, but twenty seven is a problem.
- 44:00Speaker 9: A depth is an issue now and starting level players
- 44:04Speaker 9: is an issue for next year, if not sooner. So
- 44:07Speaker 9: five to me feels like defense tend to be feels
- 44:09Speaker 9: like interior offensive line for the Giants. But yeah, I
- 44:13Speaker 9: just think this was a great trade, Like, I feel
- 44:15Speaker 9: much better about their outlook now compared to where they
- 44:17Speaker 9: were just four or five days ago prior to this trade.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Yes, Field, do you mentioned wide receivers?
- 44:23Speaker 5: How do NFL teams view Carnel Tate who benefited at
- 44:26Speaker 5: Ohio State playing opposite somebody like Jeremiah Smith. But now
- 44:30Speaker 5: when an NFL team drafts him that high, you're kind
- 44:33Speaker 5: of expecting him to be a wide receiver.
- 44:35Speaker 7: One.
- 44:36Speaker 9: Yeah, I would say this is some of the things
- 44:39Speaker 9: about the evaluation with Carnel Tate, or not Carnal's fault
- 44:42Speaker 9: at all. It's more like circumstance driven. But the truth
- 44:45Speaker 9: of the matter is that up to this point, Carneal
- 44:47Speaker 9: Tate not up to this point, I guess high school
- 44:50Speaker 9: probably was an exception, but during his college career he
- 44:52Speaker 9: was really never asked to be the number one guy
- 44:55Speaker 9: or close to.
- 44:56Speaker 1: It, right.
- 44:57Speaker 9: I mean, two years ago there was both a Mecca
- 44:59Speaker 9: Aboot and of course Jeremiah Smith. This past year there
- 45:04Speaker 9: was Jeremiah Smith. Cardltate was never asked to be just
- 45:06Speaker 9: like the guy by himself. So does that mean he's
- 45:10Speaker 9: incapable of doing it? Or is it perhaps the circumstances.
- 45:13Speaker 9: I think it's largely the circumstances. But I think teams
- 45:16Speaker 9: feel as though there is a ceiling on him compared
- 45:19Speaker 9: to Jordan Tyson, which is why if you're more a
- 45:21Speaker 9: Jordan Tyson fan than a Carnel Tate fan, there's a
- 45:24Speaker 9: body of evidence that Jordan Tyson can be the go
- 45:26Speaker 9: to wide receiver for an offense. Now, is it the
- 45:29Speaker 9: same playing in Arizona State as it is at Ohio State. No,
- 45:33Speaker 9: like Jordan Tyson didn't have nearly the guardrails that he
- 45:37Speaker 9: had to overcome that Carnell Date did. Right, the other
- 45:40Speaker 9: wide receivers at Arizona State are probably not going to
- 45:43Speaker 9: get drafted, but you do have a sample size of
- 45:46Speaker 9: when a team needed him to be their wide receiver
- 45:48Speaker 9: one and not a nothing team. Arizona State with double
- 45:52Speaker 9: overtime with Texas last year, nearly beat them, and they
- 45:55Speaker 9: were a dominant team last year was Arizona State. Jordan
- 45:58Speaker 9: Tyson was an unbelievable player, Sorry, unbelievable player prior to
- 46:05Speaker 9: getting hurt, which came before the playoff run, but he
- 46:07Speaker 9: was absolutely absurd. I always talk about those last six
- 46:11Speaker 9: games prior to the playoffs or Jordan Tyson fifty catches,
- 46:14Speaker 9: six receiving touchdowns. I think it was seven hundred and
- 46:17Speaker 9: twenty two yards.
- 46:18Speaker 8: He was awesome.
- 46:19Speaker 9: So that's why I think the Carnel Tate Jordan Tyson
- 46:22Speaker 9: conversation has become more interesting over the past week or so.
- 46:25Speaker 9: As teams have felt more comfortable with where Jordan Tyson's.
- 46:28Speaker 3: At metically fields.
- 46:31Speaker 4: It's fascinating to me on draft day the amount of
- 46:34Speaker 4: trades we have, and we've heard differing opinions this year
- 46:38Speaker 4: as to what we're going to see of teams moving
- 46:40Speaker 4: up and teams moving back.
- 46:42Speaker 3: What do you expect to see come round one on Thursday?
- 46:46Speaker 9: Yeah, So I think that the trades that we anticipates
- 46:50Speaker 9: prior to the draft are the sizeable ones up or
- 46:53Speaker 9: the sizable and then of course the other side of
- 46:55Speaker 9: that's the sizeable ones down.
- 46:57Speaker 6: Right.
- 46:57Speaker 8: Could the Cowboys move up from twelve to three or
- 46:59Speaker 8: twelve six or twelve to five, whatever it might be.
- 47:03Speaker 8: I'm not ruling those out.
- 47:05Speaker 9: I haven't heard anything on those fronts that are like
- 47:08Speaker 9: telling me this is going to get done by the
- 47:10Speaker 9: time people listen to this show and watch the show.
- 47:14Speaker 9: But I do think this draft given the subjectivity of
- 47:17Speaker 9: the prospects in this year's class, and there's always this
- 47:18Speaker 9: subjective nature to scouting, but this year things are all
- 47:21Speaker 9: over the place. Like I think there are going to
- 47:23Speaker 9: be a lot of picks where teams go they took
- 47:25Speaker 9: who how high? As a result of that, what in
- 47:29Speaker 9: surprise me if you see a lot more sort of
- 47:30Speaker 9: tinkering around the board. You're sitting there at fifteen and
- 47:34Speaker 9: you're surprised. I'm just picking this up. The Bucks are
- 47:36Speaker 9: sitting there at fifteen and a guy is available at twelve,
- 47:40Speaker 9: and they're like, how on earth did this player make
- 47:42Speaker 9: it to twelve?
- 47:44Speaker 8: Let's move on up. And I did not explain this
- 47:48Speaker 8: as eloquently.
- 47:49Speaker 9: As the great Adam Schefter did, But Schefty and I
- 47:52Speaker 9: were talking about how draft picks this year might be
- 47:55Speaker 9: like a little bit on sale compared to prior years.
- 47:58Speaker 8: Well, it sound a great draft class.
- 47:59Speaker 9: You can't drive us hard of a bargain, especially when
- 48:02Speaker 9: there's not a quarterback involved in the presumptive trade up.
- 48:05Speaker 8: So I think there's a chance that we see a
- 48:08Speaker 8: lot of maneuvering around the board.
- 48:10Speaker 9: I think there's a chance that there's also a lot
- 48:12Speaker 9: more of the maneuvering type that is, like I'm coming
- 48:15Speaker 9: up from eighteen to sixteen, I'm coming up from twenty
- 48:18Speaker 9: six to twenty two, and you know, just smaller moves
- 48:20Speaker 9: as opposed to these big, sort of landscape altering trades
- 48:24Speaker 9: that we talk about for years after that draft, Right, but.
- 48:28Speaker 2: It depends on whether or not a team who's picking
- 48:31Speaker 2: let's say high teens twenties, if they really like a guy,
- 48:34Speaker 2: then maybe there's a lot of movement right that creates
- 48:36Speaker 2: the market.
- 48:37Speaker 7: Right.
- 48:37Speaker 9: That's the fun part is that if we get a
- 48:38Speaker 9: lot of beauty in the eye of the beholder dynamics,
- 48:41Speaker 9: then we should see some action on Thursday night.
- 48:44Speaker 8: Someone asked me recently.
- 48:46Speaker 9: I was on a show at ESPN Radio earlier today
- 48:49Speaker 9: and they asked me sort of what's the biggest in
- 48:51Speaker 9: this copycat league, Like, what's the trend you've noticed for
- 48:53Speaker 9: this year. I didn't have an answer for this year specifically,
- 48:57Speaker 9: but I did note that, you know, we have a
- 48:59Speaker 9: general a more aggressive group of gms right now in
- 49:04Speaker 9: the NFL. It's become younger. I don't know those things
- 49:07Speaker 9: are necessarily tied together, but it's this younger or sharper,
- 49:11Speaker 9: often more analytically inclined group, and guys are unafraid to
- 49:14Speaker 9: make bold moves because I think what some of these
- 49:18Speaker 9: gms have realized is that even when you lose on
- 49:21Speaker 9: a bold move, you can still overcome that and be okay.
- 49:24Speaker 8: The Rams went all in and.
- 49:27Speaker 9: They had one bad year and they were right back
- 49:29Speaker 9: up and they've been a legit Super Bowl contender since then.
- 49:32Speaker 9: The Jaguars won thirteen games last year when their biggest
- 49:35Speaker 9: move of the offseason was trading for Travis Hunter, and
- 49:38Speaker 9: he played I would say, a pretty nominal role for
- 49:41Speaker 9: that franchise, not a nothing role, but it wasn't like
- 49:43Speaker 9: he was the player that we were hoping for right
- 49:46Speaker 9: out of the shoots. So I think that we'll see
- 49:48Speaker 9: we are seeing more aggressive GMS and that in turn
- 49:51Speaker 9: has resulted in more activity, which I think as consumers, fans,
- 49:56Speaker 9: people that are covering the draft, I think we can
- 49:58Speaker 9: all agree it's good for business. Fans love the thrill
- 50:02Speaker 9: of a potential swapp or trade.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Yes, Schefter reported that the AJ Brown deal is all
- 50:08Speaker 2: but done after June first. So first off, let me
- 50:11Speaker 2: ask you this, what do you think the Eagles get
- 50:13Speaker 2: in exchange.
- 50:13Speaker 9: For a J Brown from the Patriots. Yeah, And people
- 50:18Speaker 9: should just know that whoever the Patriots take it thirty one,
- 50:23Speaker 9: their current first round pick, is not Howie Roseman telling
- 50:26Speaker 9: Mike Rabile to take this guy and we'll acquire this
- 50:29Speaker 9: player after the fact. You know, in the NBA you
- 50:31Speaker 9: sometimes see guys get traded after they've been taken. Here
- 50:35Speaker 9: I go with my NBA talking the shows get it
- 50:39Speaker 9: won't be one of these. It's twenty twenty seven or
- 50:41Speaker 9: twenty twenty eight draft capital. And I think that one
- 50:45Speaker 9: of the notable parts here is oftentimes when you have
- 50:47Speaker 9: a great player available via trade, you say, like, if
- 50:50Speaker 9: you're going to trade that player, you're going to do
- 50:51Speaker 9: it prior to the draft, because great players often are
- 50:54Speaker 9: on great teams, great team and it's it's it's you know,
- 50:57Speaker 9: it's more logical for a bad team's trade a great player.
- 51:00Speaker 9: Giants with Dexter Lawrence, Hey, they're not that close to winning.
- 51:02Speaker 9: You should move on from or you can move on
- 51:04Speaker 9: for those guys more easily. For the Eagles a Super
- 51:07Speaker 9: Bowl contender and move on from aj Brown. How do
- 51:10Speaker 9: you do that well without getting something in return for
- 51:13Speaker 9: this year. It's reflective of the fact that and things
- 51:18Speaker 9: can of course change. The NFL believes twenty twenty seven especially,
- 51:22Speaker 9: but maybe twenty twenty eight as well, are going to
- 51:25Speaker 9: be excellent draft classes. Twenty twenty seven, I mean, just
- 51:28Speaker 9: right out of the gates. We're talking about not just
- 51:31Speaker 9: the quarterbacks, but Jerebia Smith from Ohio State. We Alred
- 51:34Speaker 9: talked about him. Colin Simmons pass rusher from Texas. Those
- 51:37Speaker 9: are just like two of the many names that we'll
- 51:39Speaker 9: be talking about next year. That could be we could
- 51:43Speaker 9: be talking about that as blue chippers. Like in this
- 51:44Speaker 9: year's class, we're talking about like two or three blue chippers.
- 51:47Speaker 9: Maybe we could be talking about ten or twelve. This
- 51:50Speaker 9: could be like twenty twenty four all over again, which
- 51:53Speaker 9: was this awesome, awesome draft case draft class. So I
- 51:56Speaker 9: think that the Eagles, like, could they get a twenty
- 51:58Speaker 9: twenty seven to one?
- 52:00Speaker 8: Maybe?
- 52:01Speaker 9: Could it be a twenty twenty seven two plus a four?
- 52:05Speaker 9: Could it be a conditional twenty twenty seven to one
- 52:08Speaker 9: where it's a two unless the Patriots make the AFC
- 52:12Speaker 9: Championship Game again and then it becomes a one? Like,
- 52:15Speaker 9: I think there are ways to wiggle that pick around
- 52:17Speaker 9: a little bit that both give Philadelphia the upside to
- 52:21Speaker 9: make it worth it, but protect the Patriots a little
- 52:23Speaker 9: bit a little bit, because this draft class next year
- 52:26Speaker 9: does look really really good.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Classic Cowie focused on next year's draft.
- 52:29Speaker 4: I love them, yes, guy, Mike Mendoza, and love who
- 52:34Speaker 4: are the other blue chip players in this trip in
- 52:36Speaker 4: this class.
- 52:37Speaker 9: Yeah, A good question is who are they? I say
- 52:39Speaker 9: it's for of two or three. I think Sunny Styles
- 52:44Speaker 9: in Caleb Downs are blue chip players at non blue
- 52:46Speaker 9: chip positions. So like David Bailey and rbl Reese are
- 52:50Speaker 9: close to blue chip players, but they play a premium position,
- 52:54Speaker 9: and that to me puts them close to the to
- 52:57Speaker 9: the to the to the sort of blue chip category.
- 53:00Speaker 9: Caleb Downs and Tony Styles I think fall closer to
- 53:03Speaker 9: that category. It's just a matter of And I know
- 53:06Speaker 9: fans don't love like economics, but just we if we
- 53:10Speaker 9: acknowledge that quarterbacks make the most money and then pass rushers, right,
- 53:15Speaker 9: Will Anderson now makes fifty million dollars a year.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Easy.
- 53:18Speaker 9: Yes, So if you have the chance to sign a guy,
- 53:21Speaker 9: or it's a drafted guy who the best case scenario
- 53:23Speaker 9: for him is making fifty million dollars per year, and
- 53:26Speaker 9: the best case scenario for an off ball linebacker is
- 53:29Speaker 9: something like twenty two million dollars a year. That matters,
- 53:34Speaker 9: right like it matters because the NFL has told us
- 53:37Speaker 9: that it doesn't influence winning. Off ball linebacker does not
- 53:40Speaker 9: as much as a pass rusher. So I think I
- 53:43Speaker 9: would lean towards two blue chip players with two guys
- 53:49Speaker 9: that are like inches away from that category as well.
- 53:52Speaker 9: So Fernanda Mendoza, Jeremiah Love, Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles with
- 53:58Speaker 9: Downs and styles in like maybe with like an asterisk
- 54:01Speaker 9: next to them just because of the position they play field.
- 54:04Speaker 5: Did you look at some of the impact players from
- 54:06Speaker 5: last year's draft, You can make the argument nobody was
- 54:09Speaker 5: more impactful to their team than the Seahawks picking nick
- 54:12Speaker 5: O man Worri thirty fifth. Who is the player there
- 54:16Speaker 5: where a team is going to get him, you know,
- 54:18Speaker 5: twenty on. But if he goes to the right team,
- 54:20Speaker 5: the right contender, he can make a great team, a
- 54:24Speaker 5: super Bowl favorite.
- 54:25Speaker 9: Yeah, So I think we got to go down to
- 54:27Speaker 9: the teams that are picking like near that range, right,
- 54:30Speaker 9: Like it's hard for me to say that I'm just
- 54:33Speaker 9: making this up here, but like the Browns at six
- 54:36Speaker 9: are going to get a guy that all of a
- 54:37Speaker 9: sudden puts them into contender categories because they got a
- 54:41Speaker 9: lot of question marks there.
- 54:42Speaker 8: But as we go further and further down and we
- 54:44Speaker 8: go to.
- 54:44Speaker 9: Teams like an example of a guy that I think
- 54:49Speaker 9: there's like there's a number of pass rushers that could
- 54:51Speaker 9: go from call it twenty to thirty two. In my
- 54:54Speaker 9: final mock draft, are going to see names like Keldrick
- 54:57Speaker 9: falk A, Key Mesidor, or Mason tom As, maybe Malachi
- 55:01Speaker 9: Lawrence from UCF that I think those kind of guys
- 55:05Speaker 9: can make a real impact there. I'll throw one more
- 55:07Speaker 9: at Am and he's a guy that might not even
- 55:09Speaker 9: go in the first round, but the best version of
- 55:11Speaker 9: this player could unlock some things for a defense would
- 55:14Speaker 9: be Peter Woods from Clemson. I kind of toy with
- 55:18Speaker 9: him back into the first early part of the second.
- 55:21Speaker 9: There's some people who think he could go earlier than that.
- 55:24Speaker 9: I tell people one of my rules for the draft
- 55:26Speaker 9: is water often finds its level right. Guys that are
- 55:30Speaker 9: really good players don't really ride the wave pre draft.
- 55:33Speaker 9: They just kind of go where they're supposed to go
- 55:36Speaker 9: all the time. Peter Woods might test that theory a
- 55:39Speaker 9: little bit because he came into the season with top
- 55:42Speaker 9: five aspirations. I think he left the season still feeling
- 55:45Speaker 9: like he was going to be taken in the top ten.
- 55:47Speaker 9: I would be very surprised if you went top ten.
- 55:49Speaker 9: I think the Dexter Lawrence trade informed us of how
- 55:52Speaker 9: the league feels or at least how the Bengals feel
- 55:54Speaker 9: about the defensive tackle class, especially relative to the tenth
- 55:57Speaker 9: overall pick in the draft. But I think Peter Woods
- 56:00Speaker 9: in the right spot, if he goes somewhere, he doesn't
- 56:01Speaker 9: have to be the man, but can be a guy
- 56:03Speaker 9: within that defense, has a chance to be a really
- 56:06Speaker 9: disruptive player.
- 56:07Speaker 2: If Ruben Bain's arms were a half inch long, un
- 56:10Speaker 2: how high would he go in this draft?
- 56:12Speaker 6: I think he goes.
- 56:13Speaker 9: I think the range is still somewhere in the first
- 56:15Speaker 9: twelve to fourteen picks. I think if his arms were
- 56:19Speaker 9: a little longer, though, and we had some athletic measurements
- 56:23Speaker 9: with him, we might be talking about him in like
- 56:25Speaker 9: that four to six range. It's hard, though, it's when
- 56:30Speaker 9: you don't have the premiere length and there's no athletic testing,
- 56:34Speaker 9: and scouts believe this is more sort of good athlete
- 56:37Speaker 9: as opposed to excellent athlete. Scouting can be boring with
- 56:40Speaker 9: the vocabulary. Sometimes you know a lot of teams. When
- 56:43Speaker 9: you are describing players, it's either done numerically right or
- 56:46Speaker 9: it's just like rare excellent good, very good, good average.
- 56:53Speaker 9: And the reason why they use the same terms over
- 56:56Speaker 9: and over and over again. Is to establish consistency. Right
- 57:00Speaker 9: said that Stugatts has has amazing speed, and Tailor's got
- 57:05Speaker 9: incredible speed, and Mike Ye's got exceptional speed.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Elite, you'd be right about Tailor.
- 57:11Speaker 8: Yeah, but like who would be the fastest of those players? Right?
- 57:15Speaker 9: Of those guys, you would have all those those those
- 57:18Speaker 9: adjectives sort of described approximately the same thing. Whereas you
- 57:22Speaker 9: know in scouting, you say, hey, Ruben Bain's a good athlete,
- 57:25Speaker 9: all right, Well, good is worse than very good, is
- 57:27Speaker 9: worse than excellent, is better than below average, is better
- 57:30Speaker 9: than better than sort of marginal, whatever it might be.
- 57:32Speaker 9: So I think Bain might be in sort of that
- 57:35Speaker 9: that goodish category averaged goodish category for athletes at that position.
- 57:40Speaker 9: But he gets the job done in other ways. That
- 57:43Speaker 9: I think is why he still goes. I have a
- 57:45Speaker 9: hard time seeing him not go in the first half
- 57:48Speaker 9: of the first round, but you know, in a slightly
- 57:51Speaker 9: different world, he might be going in the first six
- 57:53Speaker 9: or seven picks.
- 57:54Speaker 2: He's got to run the sports center. Final question for you, Mikey,
- 57:57Speaker 2: you know it's coming. I put you in charge of
- 58:00Speaker 2: the New York Jets. You're selecting who should the Jets
- 58:02Speaker 2: take at number two Field.
- 58:04Speaker 3: He's gonna break my heart right now, go ahead.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:07Speaker 9: What what I would do is I would be thinking
- 58:09Speaker 9: patient and long term. I've got nine picks between this
- 58:12Speaker 9: year and next year.
- 58:13Speaker 2: I can't be any more patient than i've been Field
- 58:17Speaker 2: thirteen years, buddy, And I understand what you're saying. Forty
- 58:20Speaker 2: for me, But I understand what you're saying.
- 58:21Speaker 8: Yeah, rvel Reese would be my pick.
- 58:23Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 58:24Speaker 8: You're going to go David Bailey.
- 58:26Speaker 6: Reese.
- 58:27Speaker 8: This is a good note from now. He told me
- 58:28Speaker 8: this a couple of days ago.
- 58:29Speaker 9: Arvelle Reese is two years and two days younger than
- 58:32Speaker 9: David Bailey, so the trajectory for him is very different
- 58:34Speaker 9: for a lot of reasons. Now, is there a higher
- 58:37Speaker 9: bus rate with rvel Reese? Perhaps you even't seen him
- 58:40Speaker 9: do it as much at the past rushing spot as
- 58:42Speaker 9: you have with David Bailey, But is the upside higher?
- 58:45Speaker 8: In my opinion, it's higher, all right, So Reese it is.
- 58:50Speaker 2: They're not going to take them, Mikey, that's the problem. No,
- 58:52Speaker 2: they're taking Bailey because we should take Reees.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll get you out of here. I have a
- 58:56Speaker 1: proposal for you. You love the NBA, okay, and we
- 58:59Speaker 1: love you and we love having you on.
- 59:01Speaker 2: So when Sunday comes and you throw all those fucking
- 59:04Speaker 2: mock drafts in the garbage and get rid of all
- 59:06Speaker 2: the notes that you have, you want to come on
- 59:08Speaker 2: every week and break down the NBA playoffs with us?
- 59:10Speaker 6: What do you do?
- 59:11Speaker 1: You kidding you?
- 59:12Speaker 8: I would love to talk hoops.
- 59:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 59:14Speaker 9: I actually was happy, by the way, Like it was weird.
- 59:17Speaker 9: We got good games last night. We got to games
- 59:19Speaker 9: like I'm all right for the mix obviously out coverage. Yeah,
- 59:22Speaker 9: like yes, relatively good games, like you know, I mean
- 59:25Speaker 9: still like I thought we were cruising towards potentially like
- 59:28Speaker 9: six sweeps in the man's sweeps, but like six series
- 59:31Speaker 9: of five games or less. Yes, it seems like we're
- 59:35Speaker 9: going to have, you know, some some good spirited series instead,
- 59:37Speaker 9: which is great for everybody involved.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Yes, the weekend was boring, but what you're saying is
- 59:41Speaker 2: last night the playoffs began.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Yes, yes, James one right, Yes, that's right, all right?
- 59:46Speaker 2: Check them out ESPN First Draft, check out the podcast there.
- 59:49Speaker 2: He'll be all over your draft coverage on ESPN this
- 59:52Speaker 2: entire week, and then he'll throw everything in the garbage feel.
- 59:55Speaker 1: We love you, Thank you for doing this, buddy. We
- 59:56Speaker 1: know you guys, we know it's a busy time for you.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: NFL Draft is this weekend, first round Thursday night. Matt
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: Miller is with us. He's an ESPN NFL Draft analyst.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: He's excellent.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Check him out.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: NFL Draft daily weekdays at three pm Eastern on ESPN two,
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: the ESPN App, and Disney Plus. Matt will also be
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: a part of ESPN's Day three NFL Draft broadcast on
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: ESPN and ABC. Matt, I feel like you've moved up
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: to a Day one guy. I have to be honest
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: with you, not a Day three, but a Day one guy.
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: There's this guy that started what I do for a
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: living named mel Kiper Junior. That's the Day one guy, right.
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: As long as the Godfather's in that chair, I'm gonna
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: just enjoy, yes, keeping his voice fresh during the day,
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: doing the hits that he's not doing, and doing a
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: lot of writing, and keeping Kaye ready to go.
- 1:01:00Speaker 10: I think there's room for a Miller. I think that
- 1:01:02Speaker 10: we don't have to take Kyper away, but there's room
- 1:01:04Speaker 10: for a Miller.
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: Well, I appreciate that.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Yes, how helpful has mel be Melo is a friend
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: of the show. He's a friend of Mikey A's. Mikey
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: A used to produce his show. He's on with us
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: all the time. How helpful has mel Kuiper been to
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: you in terms of your career? Yeah, super helpful. My
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: first d at ESPN, it was kind of a surprise.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: No one really knew I was going there.
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: I didn't even know I was going there when I
- 1:01:25Speaker 7: left Bleacher Report. So my first ad ESPN like happened
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: in a hurry, and I did TV like all day,
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: you know how they do, like the car wash, and
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: then Kuyper called me. I didn't have his number, obviously.
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: I just get this phone call from a Maryland phone number.
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: And we talked for like forty five minutes. And he
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: talks on the phone just like he talks on TV. Right,
- 1:01:42Speaker 7: It's that rapid fire staccato, you know, very like Northeast style.
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: But yeah, we talked forever. And what's crazy is we
- 1:01:50Speaker 7: talked about our families and like my kids and what
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: do I like to do away from football, and like
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: we really built a good friendship. So I think that's
- 1:01:59Speaker 7: the biggest way that he's been helpful, Like you know,
- 1:02:01Speaker 7: he doesn't. He doesn't like help me break down long
- 1:02:04Speaker 7: snappers or anything like that. But he's been incredibly welcoming
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: and that's you know, he's the person that vouched to
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: get me on day three coverage. So like that says
- 1:02:11Speaker 7: so much about him that ESPN hires someone you know,
- 1:02:14Speaker 7: younger and he says, hey, like we should really add
- 1:02:17Speaker 7: him to the broadcast. He brings a lot of value.
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: Has he finished a sentence yet that he started?
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: I think so? I mean, I think so. It's you
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: just have to like get through the numbers, the random
- 1:02:29Speaker 7: numbers that get thrown there, you know. And then my
- 1:02:33Speaker 7: favorite story that I've ever heard about Mel, it's not
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: like the pumpkin Pie or anything like that. It's the
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: like he doesn't know how to work a drive through.
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: Like if you go to Chick fil A with Mel,
- 1:02:42Speaker 7: like it's a nightmare because he just the concept of
- 1:02:45Speaker 7: the drive through. He hasn't. It's not something he has
- 1:02:47Speaker 7: to deal with. It's like the President having to deal
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: with driving or using a debit card. That's kyper at
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: a drive through.
- 1:02:53Speaker 10: Work a drive through, You just drive and then you
- 1:02:56Speaker 10: say what you.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Want now, come on.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: Right, yeah, coated every small sound bites.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: You can't do that. My apologies though, Matt.
- 1:03:06Speaker 10: You you recently did this cool thing where you had
- 1:03:09Speaker 10: scouts and executives predict the top ten picks. Which one
- 1:03:12Speaker 10: of those were the most surprising to you?
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: Yeah, I think the biggest surprise was the fact that
- 1:03:18Speaker 7: everyone wanted to trade out. You know, you have like
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: so the Raiders at one, that's chalk, but then even
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: at two, it was like, okay, can we start trading
- 1:03:26Speaker 7: back yet? And every every scout that I had, you.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Know, do this.
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: There's ten different ones that do this exercise with me,
- 1:03:32Speaker 7: and that was the biggest question. Everyone wanted to trade out.
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: And then you get to guys like Jeremiah Love, the
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: fantastic running back from Notre Dame, and you have the
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: you could like see these guys have that conversation with
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: themselves of too early to take a running back or
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: in this class where there's not a lot of blue
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: chip talent at left tackle, wide receiver, edge rushers, you
- 1:03:52Speaker 7: just take the running back off the board. And if
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: I remember, he went forward to Tennessee and this which
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: could be a realistic landing spot for him, but to
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: see a running back a linebacker a safety come off
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: the board in the top ten. I think speaks to
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: where this class is at, whereas generally those positions fall.
- 1:04:08Speaker 7: This year, there's like a hurry to get Love, to
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: get Sunny Styles from Ohio State, to take Caleb Bounce
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: from Ohio State. Those guys are gonna go pretty.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: Early in general. How do you feel about taking a
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: running back in the first round.
- 1:04:20Speaker 7: I think you have to have like the team has
- 1:04:22Speaker 7: to be ready. And last year with Ashton Gency is
- 1:04:25Speaker 7: a really good example of a great player who goes
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: to a bad team and a bad situation. They didn't
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: have a passing game. The offensive line I think was
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: the worst in the NFL. You have an offensive coordinator
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: that doesn't in any way mesh with what the head
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: coach wants to do, and we saw that because you
- 1:04:39Speaker 7: got fired midway through the year. It's felt like a
- 1:04:41Speaker 7: lot of arranged marriages that didn't work together. So to
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: draft a running back early, I think you have to
- 1:04:46Speaker 7: have a foundation for that. You could argue Arizona doesn't
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: have that because they don't have the quarterback Tennessee. The
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: New York Giants, they have quarterbacks going into year two
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: of their rookie contracts that both showed some spark last year.
- 1:04:58Speaker 7: Both have some assets, whether it be on the offensive line.
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: The Giants a much better situation than Tennessee with Andrew
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: Thomas Malik Nighbors Jackson dart back there. But I think
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: if you're the Giants of the Titans, it makes more
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: sense than if you're the Cardinals, whereas money off support
- 1:05:13Speaker 7: might also just need to hit, like he might just
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: need a good pick after they've missed on some many
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: of their first rounders, so you could also see that
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: being the case for them.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: You mentioned that all the scouts wanted to trade out.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: I've seen a lot of conflicting reports on how many
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: trades we'll see, at least early in this draft.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: What do you think is going to happen? Do you
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: think we're going to see a lot of teams being
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: able to move?
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: You know it was crazy. Like two weeks ago, I
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: tweeted this, I didn't think we'd see a lot of action,
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: and I immediately got a ton of pushback. Which is
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: the fun part about the job is you have an
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: opinion and then seven general managers text you to tell
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: you you're an idiot. So I got pushed back pretty quickly,
- 1:05:48Speaker 7: and the idea was that and you know this, Matt,
- 1:05:51Speaker 7: so also that it is definitely lying season. But I
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: do think we'll see more trades, probably not in the
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: top ten, but I think we'll see more in the
- 1:05:58Speaker 7: teams in twenties as players slip through the cracks and
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: some team's going to see that value or they're going
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: to panic and say we have to get we have
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: to get a corner back. And maybe there's only two
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: or three that you have a first round grade on
- 1:06:11Speaker 7: or a starting grade on, so teams jump up the
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: board to try to get one of those guys. So
- 1:06:14Speaker 7: I initially thought we'd be low on trades, but I
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: think the averages five and a half, I think we
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: hit the over on that.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: Matt.
- 1:06:22Speaker 10: You don't have to tell me any names, but which
- 1:06:24Speaker 10: of the tell me some responses that are just really blunt,
- 1:06:28Speaker 10: Like do people actually tell.
- 1:06:29Speaker 6: You you're an idiot?
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Or they're just like, you might want to know they
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: think this one.
- 1:06:34Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:06:34Speaker 7: No, I mean there are some guys that are like, hey,
- 1:06:36Speaker 7: you know, they'll try to point you in the right direction.
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: It's like a you know that gentle parenting. We're like, hey,
- 1:06:41Speaker 7: have you considered this is, and then you'll get the
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: there's no effing where that's going to happen, you know
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: this right, And it's it's fun because it's the draft,
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: like no one knows what's exactly what's going to happen.
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: You know, maybe Adam Schefter does. No one else exactly
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: knows what's going to happen, and so that's the fun
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: part of you know, you'll get a general manager who
- 1:06:58Speaker 7: I remember a couple of years ago someone telling me
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: there's no way Savior Worthy is going to be available
- 1:07:03Speaker 7: in the late first round. There's no effing way that's
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: gonna happen. Sure enough he was, so as soon as
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: Kansas City picked him, you know whatever, twenty eight or
- 1:07:10Speaker 7: twenty nine. I text that Jet manager and was like,
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: oh wow, I can't believe he was still on the board.
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: So that's the fun part.
- 1:07:16Speaker 10: Like, no matter how aggressively they deny things, you can't
- 1:07:19Speaker 10: believe it, right, Yeah, you.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Can't believe he knows that. Yes, yes, yes, go ahead,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Telly Matt.
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: What have you heard about Jordan Tyson's workout that he
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: held for teams on Friday And how do you think
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: that impacts his night on draft night?
- 1:07:33Speaker 7: Yeah, it was good. It was his short workout. I
- 1:07:35Speaker 7: think that's the big takeaway. Twenty to twenty five routes
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: is what he ran. He dropped one pass on a
- 1:07:40Speaker 7: dig route. I think the biggest thing was team seeing
- 1:07:43Speaker 7: him healthy, just because you have it throughout the process,
- 1:07:46Speaker 7: so it's something sometimes you just want to see a
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: guy work out because you want to see him in person,
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: especially post injury. I don't put a lot of stock
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: in the fact that he didn't run a forty yard dash.
- 1:07:55Speaker 7: I think the forty is becoming incredibly overrated because we
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: have GPS data of actually running in football pads to
- 1:08:02Speaker 7: see how fast they are. So with Tyson, I think
- 1:08:05Speaker 7: the late heat that we're getting from him is because
- 1:08:08Speaker 7: he was healthy enough to work out, and I've heard
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: teams love this. I think the Giants have him as
- 1:08:12Speaker 7: their top receiver, the Saints have him as their top receiver.
- 1:08:15Speaker 7: I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs have him as
- 1:08:17Speaker 7: their top receiver. So the range for him is probably
- 1:08:21Speaker 7: I mean it's probably pick five to pick thirteen at
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: this point, and thirteen would be a surprise if he
- 1:08:27Speaker 7: thaw the way to the Rams.
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: Last year, everybody seemed to have different opinions on Shador
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: Sanders this year, it seems like ty Simpson is that guy.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: Where do you think he actually winds up going?
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: I hope he doesn't fall into the fifth round because
- 1:08:41Speaker 7: I don't know that our broadcast can handle another Shador
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: slip like tys Simpson. I think he goes to Arizona.
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: I don't know where the idea that Arizona has to
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: trade up for him comes from. I don't think they do.
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: I don't know who else you're worried about at this point,
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: because when the Rams traded twenty nine for Trent McDuffie,
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: I think Ty Simpson's game of musical chairs got a
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: lot more complicated because the teams that could easibly take
- 1:09:06Speaker 7: a quarterback late first round it's like a developmental guy.
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: They don't have those picks any longer. So if you're
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: the Cardinals at thirty four, maybe you think you have
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: to jump the Jets. But the Jets would have passed
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: on him twice already at three and sixteen, so maybe
- 1:09:21Speaker 7: they do it for the fifth year option. I'm also
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: a believer that the fifth year option is probably as
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: overrated as the forty yard dash, because if your quarterback's good,
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: you pay them after the third year. We're seeing Bryce
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: Young and CJ. Straub play on a fifth year option,
- 1:09:33Speaker 7: and that's because you don't really know if they're the
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: guy yet. But in a perfect world, do you either
- 1:09:37Speaker 7: know or don't by the time you're making that decision.
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: So I don't know that the value is as big
- 1:09:42Speaker 7: as some people want to say that it is. But
- 1:09:44Speaker 7: I'll say he goes to the Cardinals and maybe they
- 1:09:46Speaker 7: trade up to like Houston at twenty eight to take
- 1:09:49Speaker 7: him there.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: Me and Mikey are Jet fans. This is a rule
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: we live by.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: If the Jets pass on you, so sorry, yeah, no,
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: thank you. But if they pass on you twice, it
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: means you're going to Canton. And so if I'm the Cardinal,
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: One's say taking it.
- 1:10:01Speaker 7: You know, I mean, yeah, But the good news is
- 1:10:05Speaker 7: you have three first round picks next year, and you
- 1:10:07Speaker 7: would rather draft a quarterback next year that you love
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: than one this year that you'd like. Because I think
- 1:10:11Speaker 7: that's where the Jets have messed up in the past,
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: is they get cornered into taking quarterbacks that they don't
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: actually like and that they're not convicted in. And so
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: if you were convicted about ty Sempson, you'd take him
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: at sixteen at worst at sixteen. So if you don't
- 1:10:25Speaker 7: take him there, why take them at thirty three? If
- 1:10:27Speaker 7: you're not going to take them at sixteen and at
- 1:10:29Speaker 7: least have the option of that fifth year, it doesn't
- 1:10:32Speaker 7: make sense to me.
- 1:10:33Speaker 10: Let's stay on the Jets here because I see you've
- 1:10:35Speaker 10: got them taking rvel Res at number two. A lot
- 1:10:38Speaker 10: of people have them taking David Bailey. What about Reese
- 1:10:41Speaker 10: makes him the right fit for the Jets in your mind?
- 1:10:44Speaker 7: Yeah, Bailey would be better right now, but this isn't
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: a team that needs to be good in twenty twenty six.
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: They need to be good in twenty twenty seven and
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: twenty twenty eight. So I think what you do is
- 1:10:52Speaker 7: you take the long term play, and that's Reese. The
- 1:10:54Speaker 7: ceiling is higher. And if you were to ask me, okay,
- 1:10:57Speaker 7: who are two or three players in this draft that
- 1:10:59Speaker 7: could actually be all pros, It'd be Jeremiah Love, It'd
- 1:11:02Speaker 7: be r Bel Reese. Those are the two players that
- 1:11:04Speaker 7: have the tools to actually be a top five player
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: at their position in the NFL. So look at a
- 1:11:10Speaker 7: guy who had ninety seven past Russ snaps last year
- 1:11:13Speaker 7: had six and a half sacks, and he even said
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: himself he never worked as a pass rusher in practice
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: and he was still able to do those things. So
- 1:11:19Speaker 7: I think we are looking at of Micah Parsons Abdul
- 1:11:22Speaker 7: Carter type player. So if you're the Jets, do you
- 1:11:25Speaker 7: want to take the guy that's gonna better this year
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: or the guy that's gonna be better in four or
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: five years? I think he takes the long term play
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: with Reese.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: Is there a draft you can recall where because a
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: lot of people are saying this is not a great draft,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: right next year is a much better draft. Is there
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: a draft where a lot of people, a lot of
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: experts thought it was going to be a bad draft
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: and it turned out to be a great draft.
- 1:11:44Speaker 7: Wow, Not off the top of my head, like my
- 1:11:46Speaker 7: twenty thirteen was a bad draft, But like Lane Johnson
- 1:11:50Speaker 7: is he's gonna be a Hall of Famer and he
- 1:11:52Speaker 7: came out of that draft. So I think a lot
- 1:11:54Speaker 7: of times what happens guys is it's called a bad
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: draft because there's not that elite quarterback right and so
- 1:11:59Speaker 7: even for like twenty team, there was a good offensive
- 1:12:01Speaker 7: tackle draft there's a good safety draft, it just wasn't
- 1:12:04Speaker 7: a good quarterback draft. And that's what we're seeing happen
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: this year. Where Mendoza's going to go one, Simpson's going
- 1:12:08Speaker 7: to go somewhere late first, early second. We might not
- 1:12:11Speaker 7: see another quarterback until the fourth round. So I think
- 1:12:13Speaker 7: that's what's driving a lot of the narrative this year
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: is a quote unquote bad draft. When there's really good
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: talent at receiver, really good talent offensive tackle. We're going
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: to see probably fifteen picks in the first round be
- 1:12:24Speaker 7: between receiver and offensive line. So there are some strings
- 1:12:27Speaker 7: in this class. It's just not maybe not the sexiest positions.
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: Matt, What did you make of the Bengals trading for
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: Dexter Lawrence and moving out of that ten spot and
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: giving it to the Giants.
- 1:12:38Speaker 7: Yeah, I think in a class like this one where
- 1:12:40Speaker 7: there's not a defensive tackle is likely to be drafted
- 1:12:43Speaker 7: in the first round, it makes sense. I also think
- 1:12:45Speaker 7: if that trade convinces Joe Burrow that you're trying to win,
- 1:12:49Speaker 7: then you make that trade every day, even you would
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: just give the tenth pick to someone for nothing if
- 1:12:53Speaker 7: it convinces Joe Burrow to be happy and staying Cincinnati, right,
- 1:12:56Speaker 7: you would four for the pick for Burrow to be like, yeah, okay,
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: they're trying to win here all stay so to now add,
- 1:13:01Speaker 7: I think one of the best defensive tackles in football
- 1:13:04Speaker 7: is gonna free up those guys off the edge. So
- 1:13:06Speaker 7: you're gonna lose Trey Hendrickson. But what they've lost and
- 1:13:09Speaker 7: what they brought in after losing Hendrickson, you know, to
- 1:13:12Speaker 7: get Lawrence. I don't know that the tenth pick in
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: this draft is a huge difference maker. You know, maybe
- 1:13:17Speaker 7: maybe Caleb Downs safety is a difference maker for you,
- 1:13:20Speaker 7: but you'd much rather have the best interior defensive tackle,
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: best nose tackle in the league instead of a pretty
- 1:13:26Speaker 7: good safety.
- 1:13:27Speaker 10: I think the clear way to make Joe Burrow happy
- 1:13:29Speaker 10: is just make practices flag football because he loves playing that.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: It's ridiculous how halready played out there? Is that a question?
- 1:13:36Speaker 7: I mean?
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: But how about from the Giants perspective, because now they
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: have the fifth pick in the draft to tenth pick
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: in the draft, you expect them John Horbaugh to do
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: what with those picks?
- 1:13:48Speaker 7: Yeah? I think we see them go Ohio State. Basically,
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: it's they're gonna probably take Sonny Styles the linebacker at
- 1:13:54Speaker 7: five ten is hard, right, because I know they love
- 1:13:57Speaker 7: Jordan Tyson, the receiver from Marizona State. He's their receiver.
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: So if he's there, that's the pick. If he's not,
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: we could see Caleb Downs, we could see you know,
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: a host Ohio State, excuse me, being the spine of
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: that defense. With now you have Styles in the middle
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: of Downs in the back end, you're kind of going
- 1:14:11Speaker 7: back to that The Ravens, you know, ideal of a
- 1:14:14Speaker 7: rangy middle linebacker, whether it's Ray Lewis or rokwand Smith.
- 1:14:17Speaker 7: They've had guys like that consistently, and then not over
- 1:14:20Speaker 7: the top safety. They go from ed Rei Di Kyle Hamilton.
- 1:14:22Speaker 7: That's the type of players Harball has kind of liked,
- 1:14:25Speaker 7: so I could envision that, but they are They're a
- 1:14:27Speaker 7: wild card because it went from Joe Shane calling the
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: shots to John Harwall calling the shots, and this will be,
- 1:14:32Speaker 7: you know, an opportunity for him to do that for
- 1:14:34Speaker 7: the first time. The Ravens always had Ozzie Newsom or
- 1:14:36Speaker 7: Eric Dacostas, so this is Harball's first time to really
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: call the shots, and I think it will be fascinating
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: to see. If you know, he doesn't have a background
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: on offense or defense really, so you can't say, Okay,
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: he's going to go offense to load up because that's
- 1:14:49Speaker 7: his side of the ball. Guy was a special teams coordinator.
- 1:14:52Speaker 7: So I think we'll see them be balanced if they
- 1:14:54Speaker 7: have the opportunity to be.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Five years from now when we're discussing this draft, the
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: three best players from this draft will be.
- 1:15:01Speaker 7: Who Jeremy I love easily. I think in five years
- 1:15:05Speaker 7: he'll be the best running back in football. Wow. So
- 1:15:07Speaker 7: he's the one off the top. I think he's saque
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: you know, that's the type of player he's going to be.
- 1:15:13Speaker 7: The second one, I will go Caleb Downs. I think
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: he can be in all pro level safety. He's not
- 1:15:19Speaker 7: Derwin James, he's not Kyle Hamilton, but he might be
- 1:15:21Speaker 7: Buddha Baker, who is a two or three times All
- 1:15:24Speaker 7: Pro at this point, so he should be in the
- 1:15:26Speaker 7: conversation as well. And then I think Fernando Mendoza and
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: it's crazy that this dude has didn't lose a game
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: last year, won the National Championship, won the Heisman Trophy.
- 1:15:34Speaker 7: He's gonna be the number one overall pick, and we're
- 1:15:36Speaker 7: not talking about him daily, but it's just because of
- 1:15:39Speaker 7: Supportgonne conclusion. He's going to go number one. There's no debate,
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: so you're not having to really jump out there and
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: defend him. As a player. I think he's going to be.
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: I mean, I'm not saying he's ever going to be
- 1:15:49Speaker 7: a Homes or Josh Allen or Joe Burrow, but he's
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: going to be a really good NFL quarterback as long
- 1:15:53Speaker 7: as the Raiders can you have some stability around him.
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: Matt, Who's the prospect that when you talk to team
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: team to team, seems like they're the most split on.
- 1:16:04Speaker 7: Yeah, that's easy. It's Jemal McCoy, the corner from Tennessee.
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: And I've talked to teams that think he's the number
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: one corner in the class, hands down. Then you talk
- 1:16:11Speaker 7: to teams that think he might be the third corner
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: and he might fall to the second round. And it's
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: all because the knee injury. He tours ACL in January
- 1:16:18Speaker 7: twenty five, didn't play all last season, had a pro
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: DA about a week and a half ago, ran a
- 1:16:23Speaker 7: four to three. I mean he's long. He had four
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: picks in twenty twenty four. He's fantastic when he's healthy,
- 1:16:29Speaker 7: but it sounds like there's concerned about the knee long term.
- 1:16:32Speaker 7: Not about if he could play in twenty six it'd
- 1:16:35Speaker 7: be good, but more about like, what will he look
- 1:16:36Speaker 7: like in twenty thirty when you're talking about a second contract.
- 1:16:39Speaker 7: I bet we see a team in the twenties, late twenties,
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: one of these playoff teams that says, we'll be happy
- 1:16:45Speaker 7: to have a guy like that for four or five
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: years and then we'll move on. Give you the Chiefs
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: and he's there at twenty nine. You don't pay corners anyway.
- 1:16:51Speaker 7: You draft them, you develop them, and then you ship
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: them off. So if you're Kansas City and he's there
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: at twenty nine, that's an easy pick for me.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: Matt.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: In a hypothetical world where you own an NFL team
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: and you could choose any GM you want to make,
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: you know, to draft you or to handle the draft
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: for you, who's the guy you're going with?
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: I think I would take Calie Roseman just because their
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: ability to foresee needs to handle the salary cap, to
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: manipulate the board, and I think that strategy aligns with
- 1:17:19Speaker 7: mine of just draft the best player. Every year we
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: are on TV or podcast and the Eagles pick and
- 1:17:24Speaker 7: it's like, oh my gosh, I can't believe this guy
- 1:17:26Speaker 7: filled to the Eagles. It's every year. They don't panic.
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: They just draft to play the falls to them, and
- 1:17:30Speaker 7: they continually turn out super Bowl caliber teams.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: The Eagles will draft as if they don't have AJ
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Brown next season, right they should?
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean it sounds like that's a foregone conclusion.
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: But they've already made those moves. You know, they added
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: Hollywood Brown, they traded for Wicks, so they've already started
- 1:17:47Speaker 7: to kind of back supports that wide receiver position. But
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: if one's there, you know, early twenties, I think they're
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: twenty three. If there's a receiver there like Omar Cooper
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: junior from Indiana, I think you have to take them
- 1:17:57Speaker 7: because you do know that June first or June second,
- 1:18:00Speaker 7: AJ Brown is not going to be a member of
- 1:18:01Speaker 7: the team.
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: Yep, Matt, Ultimately, how much does these short arms affect
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: Ruben Bayin's draft stock?
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: It hurts, it honestly does. And I think one thing
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: that's kind of cool about the job now is we
- 1:18:14Speaker 7: can look at thirty years of data basically and say
- 1:18:17Speaker 7: a player with arm length under thirty one inches has
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: never been drafted in the first round at the edge position.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: And then you can take that a step further. In
- 1:18:23Speaker 7: that same time span, no player with that arm measurement
- 1:18:26Speaker 7: has had a ten plus sax season. So he's going
- 1:18:29Speaker 7: to break the record for the shortest arms drafted in
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: the first round by Ed Rusher. That much, we know,
- 1:18:33Speaker 7: But you're basically saying, hey, we believe this player is
- 1:18:37Speaker 7: going to break the rules, and that's okay if you
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: believe that as the front office. I've talked to teams
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: about him that say that, and this is a direct quote.
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: One team said, we will let everyone else be smarter
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: than us and draft him because they're saying that he's going.
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: To be the rule breaker.
- 1:18:50Speaker 7: We don't believe that he is right. So I still
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: think Kansas DIDY probably drafts him at nine because they
- 1:18:54Speaker 7: have such a desperate need for pass rush. But I mean,
- 1:18:57Speaker 7: you are basically thumbing your nose at thirty and numbers
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: that say even if this player has you know, X,
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: y Z, they still aren't producing in the NFL at
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: a ten plus sack clip.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: What's the number?
- 1:19:08Speaker 10: How much longer would his arms have to be at minimum?
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: It's two ways for a top five pick.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: Trust me, that can mean everything, all right?
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Check him out NFL Draft daily weekdays at three pm
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: Eastern on ESPN two, ESPN, APP, and Disney Plus. Will
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: also be a part of ESPN's Day three NFL Draft broadcast.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: At ESPN and ABC. I think he's a Day one guy,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: Matt Miller. We appreciate the time, sir. Your work is excellent.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Thank you you met.
- 1:19:39Speaker 7: Thanks guys, good to see you.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: You got it.
