- 0:00Speaker 1: All Star Toyota presents Off the Bench with Jacob Hester
- 0:04Speaker 1: and Matt Flynn.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Okay, here we go where.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The plays get broken down, then science gets denied to
- 0:10Speaker 1: come off the bench. Hour two of Off the Bench
- 0:13Speaker 1: Live from the Raising Kanes Studio.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Welcome back in our number two ot B here live
- 0:37Speaker 2: from the Raizorcines Studio. Always our pleasure on Wednesdays to
- 0:41Speaker 2: welcome on our next guest. It is our guy, doctor
- 0:45Speaker 2: Steven Aantherrich. What's going on, Doc? How we doing doing great?
- 0:49Speaker 2: All right? So I'm gonna start off with an injury.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I think we talked about last week, but it's just
- 0:55Speaker 2: it feels like it's just showing up more and more
- 0:56Speaker 2: and more concussions and quarterbacks in the NFL. We talked
- 1:00Speaker 2: about Jackson Dart I believe it was last week. Now CJ. Stroud,
- 1:04Speaker 2: Texans quarterback. He's going to be out versus the Bills
- 1:07Speaker 2: on Thursday Night football. And like the concussion protocol like
- 1:13Speaker 2: is it kind of the same like almost everywhere? Like
- 1:16Speaker 2: is there like a hey, this national board said this,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and this is what we're going to follow. Because I
- 1:20Speaker 2: feel like in I don't know if you ever went
- 1:23Speaker 2: through any concussions, like, but for me, I feel like
- 1:25Speaker 2: maybe all of mine were a little bit different, like
- 1:27Speaker 2: at least from my experience. So when you're dealing with concussions,
- 1:30Speaker 2: is it kind of across the board, Hey, here's what
- 1:32Speaker 2: we're looking for.
- 1:33Speaker 3: It's pretty similar.
- 1:34Speaker 4: There are some differences that the NFL, for example, has
- 1:37Speaker 4: an independent neurologist.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Not every league uses that.
- 1:40Speaker 4: There's certain subtle differences and just kind of the minutia
- 1:43Speaker 4: and the rules, but it's basically the same. You're gonna
- 1:45Speaker 4: You're gonna start with obviously an official diagnosis, and then
- 1:48Speaker 4: from there you move forward and there's always going to
- 1:51Speaker 4: be some kind of gradual return to play. It's never
- 1:53Speaker 4: a hey, I feel better, okay, go play football. Yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 4: it's okay, you're feeling better. Let's have you get on
- 1:57Speaker 4: the treadmill, let's have you on a bike. Let's start
- 1:59Speaker 4: off kind of like and easy, because a lot of
- 2:00Speaker 4: times guys will feel good and then their heart rate
- 2:03Speaker 4: gets up, and even if we're not talking about any contact,
- 2:06Speaker 4: they start getting headaches, start having symptoms.
- 2:08Speaker 3: So I want to slowly progress you back and make
- 2:10Speaker 3: sure you're better.
- 2:11Speaker 4: There's a lot of neurologic neurocognitive tests, looking at your balance,
- 2:13Speaker 4: look at your reaction times, and a lot of different
- 2:16Speaker 4: things we utilize, and like I said, there is differences,
- 2:18Speaker 4: but it's basically the same from lead to league.
- 2:20Speaker 5: So Dougle when you look at concussions, so we all
- 2:23Speaker 5: kind of know it as like a brain bruise, basically
- 2:26Speaker 5: your brain hit in side your head. I know there's
- 2:28Speaker 5: like circles, final fluid that's like you're padding or whatever.
- 2:31Speaker 5: But like everybody recovers a little bit different, and it's
- 2:34Speaker 5: understandable that there would be like different severities to concussions.
- 2:39Speaker 5: But this might be a dumb question, but like is
- 2:42Speaker 5: there any proven treatments for typecussion besides just rest? I mean,
- 2:47Speaker 5: I know, like like blood flow heels and blood is
- 2:50Speaker 5: like the healing factor in the body, and like you
- 2:52Speaker 5: do things that other acute injuries around the body, it's
- 2:55Speaker 5: like you want to increase blood flow to that area
- 2:58Speaker 5: to help healing. Is there a way is there ever
- 3:01Speaker 5: been anything that's helped the treatment of a concussion.
- 3:04Speaker 4: There's a lot of stuff out there that is being tried.
- 3:07Speaker 4: There's a lot of sort of anecdotal data that maybe
- 3:09Speaker 4: there's some little things that we can do here and there.
- 3:11Speaker 4: There's certain things, and you know you're gonna hear about
- 3:13Speaker 4: all kinds of stuff. If somebody goes in the internet
- 3:15Speaker 4: and you google concussion treatment, you have a million things
- 3:17Speaker 4: pop up because it's such a big topic, and honestly,
- 3:20Speaker 4: it's one we don't really have a great treatment for
- 3:22Speaker 4: other than rest.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It really is the main thing.
- 3:25Speaker 4: You kind of got to let the body and specifically
- 3:27Speaker 4: the brain get better and the problem.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You know y'all mentioned well, I had a couple. They
- 3:31Speaker 3: were different.
- 3:32Speaker 4: It's it is the most probably frustrating diagnosis we have
- 3:35Speaker 4: because it's there's no perfect test right now. Now I
- 3:38Speaker 4: can't show you on an X ray there is your
- 3:39Speaker 4: concussion m RI, I C T scan whatever everything else.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You're you know, you've seen it a thousand times and yeah, okay,
- 3:45Speaker 2: this is that.
- 3:46Speaker 4: And then once you have it, they're all different and
- 3:48Speaker 4: even the same individual, you know, because you'll talk to
- 3:50Speaker 4: your teammate. I'll think he's back in a week and
- 3:52Speaker 4: I'm you know, a month in and I'm still having symptoms.
- 3:54Speaker 4: It's it's a lot of variability. It's not always easy.
- 3:57Speaker 4: It's it's it's very scrutinized. That's just one of those
- 4:00Speaker 4: things that's a rough, rough diagnosis all around.
- 4:02Speaker 5: So is it like a good assumption, like when we
- 4:04Speaker 5: just generally know it as like a brain bruise, Is
- 4:07Speaker 5: that like really what it is? And then if so,
- 4:09Speaker 5: it doesn't matter like where on the brain, like what
- 4:12Speaker 5: part of the brain hit.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's a good way to look at it,
- 4:15Speaker 4: because that's kind of what it is. You know, it's
- 4:17Speaker 4: basically an injury to the brain. It's an injury to
- 4:19Speaker 4: the brain that typically does not show up on imaging.
- 4:22Speaker 4: There's some newer tests out there that we're trying to
- 4:24Speaker 4: develop functional MRIs and using utilizing EEGs, but even those
- 4:28Speaker 4: are gonna be really expensive. You're not gonna be able
- 4:29Speaker 4: to get them quick and it's gonna be a while
- 4:31Speaker 4: before we have a good test.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So it's kind of a bruise that you can't see.
- 4:34Speaker 3: It's kind of inflammation.
- 4:35Speaker 4: We know that much that the location of the brain
- 4:38Speaker 4: does affect definitely the symptoms because you know, we know
- 4:40Speaker 4: different parts of the brain control different things, So you know,
- 4:42Speaker 4: sometimes it's gonna be more headaches, sometimes it's gonna be
- 4:44Speaker 4: more memory emotional.
- 4:45Speaker 3: You know, I've had guys that you know, I'll never forget.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I had a young kid, a high school kid, just
- 4:50Speaker 4: bawling on the sideline, just just waterfall tears. Could not
- 4:53Speaker 4: explain to me why. He's like, I don't know why crying.
- 4:55Speaker 4: He had a concussion. He's like, I'm not that upset,
- 4:57Speaker 4: I'm not whatever. Just could not stop it. And it's
- 4:59Speaker 4: just interesting. The brain is such a history, crazy thing.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Yeah, And I have never even really thought about like
- 5:05Speaker 5: the concussion being an injury to the brain. You understand that,
- 5:08Speaker 5: but like different locations of the brain would magnify a different.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Response to it. It's pretty wild. Yeah. Look, when you
- 5:17Speaker 2: have one, you've got plenty. Yeah, when you have one,
- 5:21Speaker 2: it's it's quite the experience. And then like when people
- 5:23Speaker 2: tell you, like, no, you were doing this, it's like
- 5:26Speaker 2: that like you were, Actually we're doing this. And so
- 5:29Speaker 2: I just feel like we're seeing more of those quarterbacks, yeah,
- 5:33Speaker 2: like Dylan Gabriel. Yeah I don't. Yeah, I don't feel
- 5:35Speaker 2: like we now maybe to Doc's point, I mean, now
- 5:39Speaker 2: you get buzzed down and they've got a neurologist up
- 5:41Speaker 2: there in the NFL. Maybe we did see and we
- 5:42Speaker 2: just didn't know it. But like when I was playing
- 5:45Speaker 2: like I don't. I don't remember quarterbacks getting concussions, right,
- 5:49Speaker 2: but there wasn't a ton and now the rules are
- 5:50Speaker 2: supposed to protect them more than ever. And this is
- 5:52Speaker 2: where you're seeing it because there's so many rules like
- 5:55Speaker 2: running more too.
- 5:56Speaker 5: In the NFL, you got so much, so many rules
- 5:58Speaker 5: protecting the quarterback, like rough the passer is a joke now,
- 6:01Speaker 5: but like so most of the injuries are from the ground. Well,
- 6:04Speaker 5: quarterbacks been hitting the ground in football for one hundred years,
- 6:08Speaker 5: and apparently the helmet technology has improved, so like there
- 6:13Speaker 5: had to been just tens of thousands undiagnosed before this
- 6:17Speaker 5: all happened. Because helmets are better, you're not like getting
- 6:21Speaker 5: concussions most of the time, at least as a quarterback
- 6:23Speaker 5: from getting hit by another person. It's usually the ground
- 6:26Speaker 5: that causes it.
- 6:28Speaker 4: My god, yeah, I think I think diagnostics is a
- 6:30Speaker 4: big part of it. Where I mean, I think back
- 6:32Speaker 4: to when I played in high school through college. I
- 6:35Speaker 4: can only remember one guy getting diagnosed with the concussion.
- 6:38Speaker 4: This is a guy who could not walk outside in
- 6:40Speaker 4: the daylight because it was that bad. And there may
- 6:42Speaker 4: been a couple others, you know, because that I don't
- 6:44Speaker 4: don't recall, but I don't.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I don't remember. Definitely weren't many, you know, in high school.
- 6:47Speaker 3: I remember none.
- 6:48Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:49Speaker 4: It's one of those things where, you know, I think
- 6:52Speaker 4: we obviously are way more aware of it now. That's
- 6:54Speaker 4: that's probably a bigger part. And then you know the
- 6:56Speaker 4: style of play. You know, we talked about that a
- 6:58Speaker 4: little bit with Dart. You know, he's his style. Well,
- 7:00Speaker 4: you know those guys are going to see it a
- 7:01Speaker 4: little bit more.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You dive head first as a defender.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Yeah, oh uh, Doc, Let's let's turn our focus to
- 7:09Speaker 5: a different part of the body. We saw Michael Pinnox
- 7:12Speaker 5: this past week get injured, taken off the field, and
- 7:15Speaker 5: the diagnosis has come with a season ending injury to
- 7:18Speaker 5: his knee. That would make I believe five of the
- 7:22Speaker 5: last eight seasons of him playing football, whether college or pros,
- 7:25Speaker 5: that he has had an injury that made him miss
- 7:28Speaker 5: the rest of the season. I think most of them
- 7:30Speaker 5: have been I think it was a shoulder, but I
- 7:31Speaker 5: think most of them have been knee injuries. So I
- 7:33Speaker 5: kind of want to talk to you about reoccurring ACL injuries,
- 7:38Speaker 5: reoccurring ligament injury that that you see that it needs reconstruction,
- 7:42Speaker 5: You need different different techniques, and I know in reconstructive
- 7:45Speaker 5: surgery it is like you're using different parts of the
- 7:47Speaker 5: body or cadavers or different different things to fix. But
- 7:51Speaker 5: what happens when you reinjured the same thing after it's
- 7:54Speaker 5: been reconstructed?
- 7:55Speaker 2: What is that surgery? Like? What's that recovery process?
- 7:58Speaker 5: How does it differ from like afresh the first time
- 8:01Speaker 5: you get injured.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Well a lot depends on how long it is in
- 8:04Speaker 4: between it, how bad was each injury, so across the board.
- 8:07Speaker 4: It's kind of hard to say, but but yes, if
- 8:09Speaker 4: you keep injuring the same thing, the same knee, for example,
- 8:12Speaker 4: it is gonna become more difficult.
- 8:13Speaker 3: You're gonna have more because for one.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Part of how we fix these is we use graph
- 8:18Speaker 4: from other part part of the knee, typically the hamstring,
- 8:20Speaker 4: the ptellerton and the quad tendon. Well, we can't keep
- 8:24Speaker 4: going back to the same source, So for one, you're
- 8:25Speaker 4: going to have to change where it's coming from. So
- 8:27Speaker 4: you're going to have more scar tissue in different areas.
- 8:30Speaker 4: So not just the ACL but you know, if we
- 8:31Speaker 4: take a pateellerton in one time hamstring, that's two different
- 8:34Speaker 4: parts of the body. It might have a little bit
- 8:35Speaker 4: of scar and typically people do okay with that, but
- 8:37Speaker 4: again the more you accumulate that, and then the other
- 8:40Speaker 4: thing you really worry about a lot of these knee
- 8:41Speaker 4: injuries is sometimes get some cartilage damage. Maybe not even
- 8:45Speaker 4: something that's obvious right out of the gate, but you
- 8:46Speaker 4: know if as the bone kind of hits together, because
- 8:48Speaker 4: that's what happens with the ACL, is the two bones
- 8:51Speaker 4: kind of hit together, and if you get some bone contusions,
- 8:53Speaker 4: you get a little cartilage injury. Then you get the
- 8:55Speaker 4: same thing happening again and again you know that's a
- 8:57Speaker 4: knee that's gonna have more problems. You're gonna have the
- 9:00Speaker 4: guys that you're gonna see swelling in the knee down
- 9:02Speaker 4: the road. You're gonna see a lot of these issues,
- 9:04Speaker 4: and then you run the risk of failure. I think
- 9:05Speaker 4: I think this time with the pendix, it is actually
- 9:07Speaker 4: the other knee, if I'm not mistaken, So he hadn't
- 9:10Speaker 4: injured this one. And I think we talked about that
- 9:12Speaker 4: a few weeks back, that some of the there's a
- 9:14Speaker 4: lot of reasons why guys injure their acls, and some
- 9:16Speaker 4: of us just the way we're made, We're all made
- 9:18Speaker 4: a little different. There's differences in the knee. And then
- 9:20Speaker 4: you consider after an injury, you're gonna favor things, You're
- 9:23Speaker 4: gonna you're gonna rely more on that other leg, so
- 9:25Speaker 4: maybe you're putting more stress on it.
- 9:27Speaker 2: So there's a lot of.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Variables that go into this.
- 9:28Speaker 4: We do know that if you tear one knee, your
- 9:31Speaker 4: likelihood of tearing the other acled is increased anywhere from
- 9:33Speaker 4: five to ten fold over the average population.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So all right, so why is that just because of
- 9:38Speaker 2: the favoring of the one that you did already?
- 9:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's a little bit of both. So
- 9:44Speaker 4: you're favoring it. So you know, if I injer my
- 9:45Speaker 4: right knee, I'm just naturally gonna put more more pressure
- 9:48Speaker 4: on that left. Plus you have some time when you're down,
- 9:50Speaker 4: so even though you're trying to stay in shape, that
- 9:52Speaker 4: left knees you might get a little weak or two.
- 9:53Speaker 4: And then there are some of the genetic predispositions that
- 9:55Speaker 4: people sometimes have.
- 9:56Speaker 3: So it's a little bit of all the above.
- 9:59Speaker 5: So when you rea you're an acl you said you
- 10:02Speaker 5: use graphing from other parts of the knee or that
- 10:05Speaker 5: same ligament.
- 10:08Speaker 2: And you repair it. Is it ever.
- 10:12Speaker 5: I'm sure that Brocket is, but like other places, is
- 10:15Speaker 5: it ever back to one hundred percent or is it
- 10:17Speaker 5: like ninety percent of strength? When it's fully healed with
- 10:20Speaker 5: a repaired ACL, it.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Can get back to full strength.
- 10:23Speaker 4: In fact, sometimes your likelihood of retearing is less because
- 10:28Speaker 4: you have a better ACL. Sometimes, especially if you were
- 10:30Speaker 4: one of these individuals. Maybe some people you'll see some
- 10:33Speaker 4: people are more loose to begin with. Some people maybe
- 10:35Speaker 4: had a thinner ligament to begin with, so we might
- 10:37Speaker 4: get you a little bit more robust. And they've actually
- 10:39Speaker 4: shown that you're actually if you have a good surgery,
- 10:41Speaker 4: you're probably more likely to tear the other one because
- 10:43Speaker 4: of all those earth things we just talked about than retearing,
- 10:46Speaker 4: as long as you take the appropriate time to heal,
- 10:47Speaker 4: that's the other thing.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Give it time to heal.
- 10:49Speaker 4: If you try to go back too early, that that
- 10:51Speaker 4: that data is kind of skewykin.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I like like if you get enough like screws and
- 10:54Speaker 5: plates put on you and you're like unbreakable, unbreakable.
- 10:59Speaker 2: What I'm sure sure? Gosh, who was it that? Oh
- 11:05Speaker 2: it was Lane Johnson for the Eagles tackle Hill that
- 11:09Speaker 2: he's like Hey, he's got a Liz Frank injury, and
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, but he's not considered out for the year.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Just shit, I'm like, hold up. Like anybody that I've
- 11:15Speaker 2: ever known has got Liz Frank and I've gone through
- 11:17Speaker 2: that as well. Like, it's not a quick and easy
- 11:20Speaker 2: process because they're different variations of Liz Frank.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Yeah, there are. There are.
- 11:25Speaker 4: So if you have a mild more of a sprain,
- 11:27Speaker 4: so if you just sprain the joint, it can heal.
- 11:30Speaker 4: But sometimes if you have a tear or a fracture
- 11:32Speaker 4: associated with that joint, which is kind of a midfoot sprain.
- 11:35Speaker 4: You know, anytime we hear midfoot sprain, we're a little
- 11:37Speaker 4: bit nervous.
- 11:37Speaker 3: That's the first.
- 11:38Speaker 4: It's not always a Liz Frank, but that's the one
- 11:40Speaker 4: you worry about because that's one that's going to be
- 11:42Speaker 4: more commonly unstable or at the very least, they're gonna
- 11:45Speaker 4: be booted.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Probably out for at least several weeks.
- 11:47Speaker 4: But if it is more on that mild a variety,
- 11:49Speaker 4: it might be someone who can boot up, and if
- 11:51Speaker 4: they respond pretty quickly, they may they may get back
- 11:53Speaker 4: a little bit more rapidly.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I never usually it's like you list Frank, Like Buddy,
- 11:58Speaker 2: go ahead and sit down, list Frank. It's not like
- 12:03Speaker 2: it's like a person.
- 12:07Speaker 4: It's a surgeon who first diagnosed I think if I'm not
- 12:09Speaker 4: mistaken as French and during the Napoleon Award, so somebody
- 12:14Speaker 4: want to fact check me, but uh, I believe it
- 12:16Speaker 4: was actually what it was.
- 12:18Speaker 3: So I think I think that was what it was.
- 12:20Speaker 4: To go back and double check me, but I know
- 12:21Speaker 4: it was named after the guy first.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I know it's not fun, so I was right. It
- 12:26Speaker 2: was the name of somebody I don't know. I mean,
- 12:28Speaker 2: I think Doc's just trying to back you up here. Okay,
- 12:30Speaker 2: there you go. He goes back to Napoleon, but he
- 12:34Speaker 2: always sounds smart.
- 12:35Speaker 3: If you say Napoleonic, I mean it does.
- 12:37Speaker 2: It does, actually go, I'm pretty smart. There only a
- 12:40Speaker 2: couple of games left. Hard to believe, but I know
- 12:42Speaker 2: you got some guess some high school playoff work you're
- 12:44Speaker 2: gonna be doing.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll be busy too. It's a busy couple of weeks.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But yeah, it's crazy. We're almost there and hopefully not
- 12:49Speaker 4: too busy. I hope not too busy. Yeah, hopefully not,
- 12:51Speaker 4: you know, hopefully We'll just be a good spectator. I'm
- 12:53Speaker 4: always happier that way, right, all.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Right, Doc, we appreciate no Doctor Steven After it's good
- 12:59Speaker 2: enough to join us every single week here on the show.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Will step away more OTB coming back your way when
- 13:05Speaker 2: we jump back live from the Raising Kine studio.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Off the bench, all right.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Go to Russellpools dot com the website for Russell pool Company.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Check out the gallery of work they have right there
- 13:16Speaker 2: on the homepage, a full list of services. Remember they
- 13:19Speaker 2: are there from the very beginning till the end, everywhere
- 13:21Speaker 2: in between and afterwards as well. They are truly the
- 13:24Speaker 2: one stop shot pool company. Check out the financing options
- 13:27Speaker 2: on the homepage as well. Go to Russellpools dot com
- 13:31Speaker 2: find your dream pool, build your dream pool and it's
- 13:34Speaker 2: always going to happen with Russell Pools and Russellpools dot com.
- 13:37Speaker 5: That's right, Russell Pools the name you think of when
- 13:40Speaker 5: you think of the highest quality custom pools, or you know,
- 13:43Speaker 5: maybe maybe you just want a pool that's not necessarily custom.
- 13:46Speaker 5: You just go to their website at Russell Pools dot com.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Check out the gallery. You're like, Hey, I like that pool.
- 13:50Speaker 5: That poll looks sweet. So if you want some water features,
- 13:52Speaker 5: you want an infinity edge, you want a heated pool?

- 15:56Speaker 2: no way this is the same place, And well, it's
- 16:01Speaker 2: that same location, but let me just tell you it's
- 16:03Speaker 2: a little bit different. You get an upgrade, buddy, you
- 16:05Speaker 2: are You're getting Beyonce.
- 16:06Speaker 5: And I know that they are uber prepared at every
- 16:10Speaker 5: single level of that construction process, because when we walked
- 16:13Speaker 5: in there, they even had a hard hat big enough
- 16:15Speaker 5: for Jake.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Said and yours as well.
- 16:18Speaker 5: That's a true good point. They'll big you know, there's
- 16:20Speaker 5: a couple of hard hat wears over here. We were like,
- 16:24Speaker 5: do things fall from the ceiling? Often we're like are
- 16:26Speaker 5: these regulation size? Because they better be plus size?
- 16:30Speaker 2: All right? So earlier we talked about Kenny Dillingham. Wait,
- 16:40Speaker 2: what are you doing over there? Okay, listen up, just
- 16:45Speaker 2: got an update from Doc.
- 16:48Speaker 5: The term list Frank originates from Jacques liz Frank de
- 16:51Speaker 5: Saint Martin, a French surgeon, and.
- 16:54Speaker 2: The Napoleon's are they there? You go?
- 16:56Speaker 5: In the early eighteen hundreds described an amputation through this
- 16:59Speaker 5: mid foot joint do to a soldier's foot injury. So
- 17:02Speaker 5: Liz Frank's from Saint Jacques litz Frank Saint Mantine. So
- 17:10Speaker 5: doctors right? And technically I was right. Basically know you were.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I thought you were just being yourself. I'm always myself,
- 17:18Speaker 5: but you know what I mean. That's why I mispronounced words.
- 17:20Speaker 5: That's why I say dumb things sometimes. That's why I
- 17:23Speaker 5: report fake.
- 17:24Speaker 2: News sometimes because I don't fact check him. Oh the
- 17:28Speaker 2: Drew Brees.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Mm hmm, I've done it multiple times. Drew Brees is
- 17:32Speaker 5: just the most recent one. I don't remember.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Well, chat GBT told me much wrong information sometimes you
- 17:42Speaker 2: do trust that a lot. Sorry, I'm not supposed to
- 17:44Speaker 2: mention chat GBT. Why I don't know who said you're
- 17:48Speaker 2: not supposed to mention it. I don't know. Someone tell
- 17:50Speaker 2: me that make all your ideas seem like they were yours.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Oh no, anybody knows you knows that you lean on it.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, hard on it. Coming up in about ten
- 18:03Speaker 2: minutes from now. Very excited about this, the return of
- 18:08Speaker 2: coach Kim Mulkey on O TV. Set that up yesterday.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Go to get back to our weeklies with coach Mulky
- 18:15Speaker 2: every Wednesday. It's a plan. You know, there might be
- 18:18Speaker 2: some weeks where it has to be a Tuesday or Thursday,
- 18:20Speaker 2: but every Wednesday we are going to have coach Mulky.
- 18:23Speaker 2: They are five to zero on this season. They've scored
- 18:26Speaker 2: one hundred points in every single game that they've played.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Good this year. It's pretty decent, pretty dee digis. They
- 18:35Speaker 2: beat two Lane on the road one oh one to
- 18:37Speaker 2: seventy one the other night. They've got a couple of
- 18:41Speaker 2: games before they've got a big non conference matchup against
- 18:45Speaker 2: the Duke Blue Devils. So it's gonna be a lot
- 18:47Speaker 2: of fun to continue to watch this team certainly look
- 18:50Speaker 2: like one of the best teams, not only in the SEC,
- 18:53Speaker 2: in the country. They sit at number five in the country. Also,
- 18:57Speaker 2: the men's team got a dub last night, so keep
- 19:00Speaker 2: their record perfect as well. You know, after that's what
- 19:05Speaker 2: that means after, you know, after a disappointing football season,
- 19:10Speaker 2: we know that the women's team's going to be great.
- 19:12Speaker 2: We know they're going to make a deep, deep, NCAA
- 19:14Speaker 2: tournament run. It would be so refreshing to see the
- 19:18Speaker 2: men's team going a little bit of a run here.
- 19:21Speaker 2: And look, I'm realistic. I'm not saying they gonna go
- 19:26Speaker 2: out and win a championship, but man, if they could
- 19:29Speaker 2: just fit finished like right in the middle of the
- 19:32Speaker 2: Southeastern Conference and maybe, just maybe, so.
- 19:36Speaker 5: I'm gonna ask you questions on this me surprisingly enough,
- 19:41Speaker 5: not a basketball guy, I will be by Christmas, we'll
- 19:44Speaker 5: be locked in. But for the LSU men's basketball team, Like,
- 19:48Speaker 5: what is a I don't even want to know what
- 19:51Speaker 5: like a realistic ceiling. I want to know what a
- 19:53Speaker 5: ceiling is, an absolute ceiling, like a pipe dream ceiling.
- 19:56Speaker 5: And then what's a realistic, really good season for them?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Hmmm? I mean, I think that the ceiling would probably
- 20:05Speaker 2: like you can't like as much as we'd want to be, like,
- 20:08Speaker 2: you know, Homer Purple and gold glasses, pumping sunshine, the
- 20:11Speaker 2: whole deal. I mean, you had a conference that everyone
- 20:14Speaker 2: made the NCAA tournament but two teams, and you were
- 20:16Speaker 2: one of the two teams. So to say that the
- 20:22Speaker 2: ceiling would be higher than finishing in the middle of
- 20:24Speaker 2: the SEC, I think would be would be crazy.
- 20:27Speaker 6: I think if you got to a five hundred conference record,
- 20:30Speaker 6: that would be excellent.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I think so, I think that's your goal. Team of
- 20:33Speaker 2: sixteen teams, fourteen of sixteen made the nc DOUBLEA tournament.
- 20:37Speaker 2: You in South Carolina just learned it's only ones that
- 20:39Speaker 2: did not make it. So so for the games you
- 20:43Speaker 2: have coming up, I think you have Omaha Nebraska, you
- 20:46Speaker 2: have Drake I believe, then you got on the road
- 20:50Speaker 2: against Boston College, and then you've got a test against
- 20:53Speaker 2: number fifteen Texas Tech. So that will kind of give
- 20:56Speaker 2: you an idea as you head into conference. I'm trying
- 21:00Speaker 2: to think. I know it's a challenge game, but I'm
- 21:03Speaker 2: trying to think where. I think it's in Fort Worth.
- 21:06Speaker 2: If I'm not mistaken, the Texas UH Tech game, so
- 21:11Speaker 2: we'll find out about them when they played Texas Tech.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Do you like to go to the games? Oh? Yeah, Hey,
- 21:16Speaker 2: kids love to go to the L s U men's
- 21:19Speaker 2: and women's basketball games. They like that it's inside. They
- 21:22Speaker 2: like the concessions. Wisconsant entertainment too.
- 21:26Speaker 5: I think last week I said I didn't watch a
- 21:27Speaker 5: dribble last last year till the tournament.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Uh. I actually lied on that. I forgot.
- 21:32Speaker 5: We actually took the fam to a game, all five
- 21:35Speaker 5: of us last year. I think we have to watch
- 21:36Speaker 5: an Auburn.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And it is. It's constant entertainment.
- 21:41Speaker 5: There's always something happening, always something falling from the sky,
- 21:44Speaker 5: always somebody doing something on the court, some sort of
- 21:47Speaker 5: competition or dance.
- 21:48Speaker 2: It's exciting. That's all I got on the basketball takes
- 21:54Speaker 2: right the second you got me, you worked the game
- 22:00Speaker 2: last night, didn't you? Sorry?
- 22:01Speaker 6: I did not work the game. I worked the women's
- 22:04Speaker 6: game Monday night. I followed it well, like alcorn State
- 22:09Speaker 6: came out lazing hot from three.
- 22:12Speaker 2: They cooled it down. But the thing I like about
- 22:14Speaker 2: this game.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Everyone's going to complain, Oh, you gave up eighty one
- 22:17Speaker 6: points to alcorn State. I get that, but You found
- 22:21Speaker 6: a different way to win a basketball game, which I
- 22:23Speaker 6: always think makes you a better team. So far this year,
- 22:27Speaker 6: you've had DJ Thomas dish it out to the shooters
- 22:30Speaker 6: and they've done a really good job from three. You
- 22:31Speaker 6: shot twenty eight percent from three last night. That's terrible.
- 22:35Speaker 2: What did you do?
- 22:36Speaker 6: You were dominant in the paint fifty eight to twenty
- 22:39Speaker 6: eight point differential in the paint. Mikenwoko is the best
- 22:42Speaker 6: player on this basketball team. Twenty nine points, nine rebounds.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Markel Sutton still hit his shots. I mean DJ Thomas
- 22:49Speaker 6: still had sixteen and six when the rest of the
- 22:52Speaker 6: guys had an offshooting night. You found a different way
- 22:54Speaker 6: to win this game, and I appreciate that because you're
- 22:57Speaker 6: not always going to just stand there and knock down three.
- 23:00Speaker 6: Sometimes the shots aren't gonna fall for you. You found
- 23:02Speaker 6: a way to win. However, you play like that in
- 23:05Speaker 6: sec play, you're gonna get beat, so fix it. But
- 23:08Speaker 6: nice job to find a different way to win.
- 23:10Speaker 2: All right. So watching this team, and you and I
- 23:12Speaker 2: have talked about this for the last couple of years, Tite,
- 23:16Speaker 2: it's like, Okay, you've got some good stuff in the
- 23:19Speaker 2: non con and even last year, like you had some
- 23:20Speaker 2: wins against some power for teams, right, some teams that
- 23:24Speaker 2: you felt really good about, and then it just did
- 23:26Speaker 2: not happen obviously in conference play, Like when you watched
- 23:29Speaker 2: this team compared to when you watched last year's team
- 23:32Speaker 2: so far to this point, do you think it is
- 23:35Speaker 2: a better made up roster and team so far?
- 23:37Speaker 6: Yeah, because you go back to look at Mat McMahon's
- 23:41Speaker 6: time at Murray State, the times he was the most successful,
- 23:44Speaker 6: I get it. John Morant take him out of it.
- 23:47Speaker 6: When he had a dominant, pure point guard, his teams
- 23:51Speaker 6: were good. I think you have that. I think DJ
- 23:53Speaker 6: Thomas is a pure point guard. I don't really think
- 23:56Speaker 6: he's had that this year. Like Cam Carter was a
- 23:58Speaker 6: great guard last year, he wasn't a one.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Thomas does a good job of facilitating.
- 24:04Speaker 6: So far, you've been a good shooting team, but you
- 24:07Speaker 6: have a dominant guy down low as well. If you
- 24:09Speaker 6: have a good point guard and you have a guy
- 24:11Speaker 6: download that can dominate in the paint, I think you
- 24:14Speaker 6: could win because you're shooters. Max McKinnon's done a great job,
- 24:17Speaker 6: Markel Sutton's been really good, Sean King's been good. Ron
- 24:21Speaker 6: Zippers barely played because he's been hurt. He's a guy
- 24:24Speaker 6: that can shoot from the outside. You have shooters, you
- 24:27Speaker 6: have a dominant guard, and you have a really good
- 24:29Speaker 6: post player. You can compete against anybody you go against.
- 24:34Speaker 2: All Right, we're going we're gonna see like we are
- 24:36Speaker 2: certainly going to see. I do agree with you. It
- 24:38Speaker 2: does feel like it's a little bit better. The roster
- 24:41Speaker 2: feels better. It feels like it's got some pieces that
- 24:44Speaker 2: you can put together and trying to make that run
- 24:47Speaker 2: in conference play because in non con last year, I
- 24:50Speaker 2: think I know I got fooled a little bit there.
- 24:52Speaker 2: We'll see if they can put it together. A team
- 24:54Speaker 2: that we know has it together and we know is
- 24:58Speaker 2: going to make the NCAA tournament and going to make
- 25:00Speaker 2: a run, the LSU women's basketball team, and we catch
- 25:03Speaker 2: up with their head coach, Kim Mulkey when we come
- 25:05Speaker 2: back here on Oak t beat.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Off the bench.
- 25:11Speaker 2: All right, go to All Star Toya Vrouge dot com

- 25:25Speaker 2: not something you see every day either, and you certainly
- 25:28Speaker 2: don't see the per day rental prices. You don't see

- 25:36Speaker 2: sized suv in the Sequoia. So they got something for

- 26:14Speaker 2: she's told me. She told me check it out. Just
- 26:18Speaker 2: what she said, she said, Oh, she says she wants
- 26:22Speaker 2: some more.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Definitely said blocked in on LSU Football twenty four to seven.
- 26:31Speaker 1: You're listening to Off the Bench.
- 26:36Speaker 2: All right, welcome back in OTV here live from the
- 26:38Speaker 2: Raise of Canes Studio. Very very excited for this next conversation.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Over the last couple of years, we've been lucky enough
- 26:44Speaker 2: to have coach Kim Mulkey join us every single week
- 26:47Speaker 2: during the basketball season. Excited to get this conversation. Go
- 26:51Speaker 2: and coach, we appreciate your time so much. Thanks for
- 26:54Speaker 2: hopping on with us. Thanks for joining us.
- 26:57Speaker 8: Good morning.
- 26:57Speaker 7: Can you guys hear me? I'm out walking and then
- 27:00Speaker 7: have an echo? Can you hear me?
- 27:01Speaker 8: Okay?
- 27:02Speaker 2: Uh, hey, coach, we'll do this. We'll call hey, call
- 27:06Speaker 2: us on the number that we called you on, and
- 27:08Speaker 2: I think the echo will go away. So you got
- 27:11Speaker 2: to call me back, No, Coach, I think if you
- 27:13Speaker 2: call us, I think the echo goes away. So whatever
- 27:16Speaker 2: number we called you from, I think if you call
- 27:18Speaker 2: us back, I think the echo goes away. All right,
- 27:21Speaker 2: I'll call you right back, right, coach. Uh. I don't
- 27:26Speaker 2: know why. I don't know why all these fancy buttons
- 27:30Speaker 2: and cameras and different things because I've been a guest
- 27:32Speaker 2: on you know, shows on this station before, or call
- 27:35Speaker 2: it in when I've been out of town. Sometimes you
- 27:37Speaker 2: just get the echo. Or you just told a legend
- 27:39Speaker 2: of Hall of Famer to call you back. Please. You
- 27:43Speaker 2: didn't say please, I did that. I just did dude,
- 27:53Speaker 2: doo doude doo doo doo doo. That's all right. This
- 27:57Speaker 2: would be the first time I've ever talked with her. Yeah,
- 28:00Speaker 2: I told her you were slippy. Don't worry. Oh, yeah,
- 28:01Speaker 2: for sure yesterday when I was getting everything set up.
- 28:04Speaker 2: It's obvious. Yeah, no question about it. Coach Mulky, we
- 28:07Speaker 2: got you.
- 28:09Speaker 8: You've got me.
- 28:10Speaker 2: There we go. It's a little bit better, so we'll
- 28:12Speaker 2: see how it goes. How are you how You've been
- 28:15Speaker 2: off to a great start so far in the season.
- 28:17Speaker 2: We miss having you on the show. We kicked t
- 28:20Speaker 2: Bob out. He's now in Chicago freezing in the snow.
- 28:22Speaker 2: But we got Matt Flynn here with us, so we're
- 28:24Speaker 2: glad to have you back on.
- 28:27Speaker 8: Can you hear me?
- 28:28Speaker 2: Guys? Oh, we got you? Do you have us?
- 28:32Speaker 8: I think I heard you.
- 28:34Speaker 7: I'm not coming across clearly apologized. Yeah, Matt, welcome to
- 28:40Speaker 7: the show man. I know y'all been doing this during
- 28:42Speaker 7: football season, but I watched you fling the ball a
- 28:44Speaker 7: little bit in your day as well.
- 28:46Speaker 2: That's right, coach. It's an honor to talk to you.
- 28:48Speaker 5: You are an absolute legend, and like, look, I've known
- 28:52Speaker 5: and followed your career for a long time. I grew
- 28:54Speaker 5: up in Texas. My whole family was a Baylor fan
- 28:57Speaker 5: of a big coach, Ken Moulkey fans. I've been a
- 29:00Speaker 5: long time, so it's a pleasure, in an honor to
- 29:03Speaker 5: talk to you.
- 29:03Speaker 7: Well, Well, tell me if I'm right or wrong. Why
- 29:06Speaker 7: do I have Tyler Texas in my brain when it.
- 29:08Speaker 8: Comes to you.
- 29:09Speaker 2: You nailed it.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Tyler Texas. My dad, my whole family went there. My
- 29:12Speaker 5: dad played quarterback there in the sixties. Oh yeah, I
- 29:16Speaker 5: don't know how you know that, but that's amazing.
- 29:19Speaker 7: I keep up with sports, not all sports, the main
- 29:23Speaker 7: three that those of us from the South played basketball, baseball,
- 29:27Speaker 7: and football. So an odd thing or two about athletes.
- 29:31Speaker 8: Hester. You know, he thinks he's from South Louisiana and
- 29:34Speaker 8: that's four. Grew up in North Louisiana.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Call that sheep East Texas. Hey, I'd rather that than
- 29:41Speaker 2: southern Arkansas. But you're right through one eight through one
- 29:43Speaker 2: great no question about a coach, So and your and.
- 29:46Speaker 8: Y'all's boy, the old center, the old lineman.
- 29:49Speaker 7: I bet he's freezing his rear end off about now
- 29:52Speaker 7: in the big Chicago. You know the thing about Chicago,
- 29:56Speaker 7: which is a great sports town that way, but the
- 29:58Speaker 7: thing about Chicago, when you're ready to go fishing, all
- 30:01Speaker 7: you can do.
- 30:01Speaker 8: Is ice fish. You know, he's down here. We can
- 30:04Speaker 8: bass dish, but he's.
- 30:05Speaker 7: Got to go chop a hole in the water and
- 30:07Speaker 7: figure out how to do all that stuff.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Uh, coach, you know, like that first true like winter morning,
- 30:13Speaker 2: because you know he's lived in Atlanta, he's lived in
- 30:15Speaker 2: South Louisiana his whole life. And you know, Matt played
- 30:18Speaker 2: in Green Bay, I played in Denver. You've obviously, you know,
- 30:20Speaker 2: been across the country watching different things coaching, so you've
- 30:24Speaker 2: experienced it. You know that hit him like a ton
- 30:26Speaker 2: of bricks that first morning he woke up and it
- 30:28Speaker 2: was like real snow, not just some ice here in
- 30:30Speaker 2: South Louisiana.
- 30:32Speaker 8: I bet he had to go spend some money and
- 30:34Speaker 8: buy his whole family.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Jacket real jackets too.
- 30:40Speaker 7: You got it.
- 30:40Speaker 8: Well, when you guys talk to him, tell.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Him hello, absolutely, absolutely will coach. And so again, so
- 30:46Speaker 2: excited to have you back on the show. And obviously,
- 30:49Speaker 2: like every year, it's going to be a new team.
- 30:51Speaker 2: You're gonna have new players. Now you've got some returning players,
- 30:53Speaker 2: some very good returning players, but you know, with today's
- 30:57Speaker 2: college basketball, you're gonna have some new on every ross.
- 31:00Speaker 2: And so every year though, I always give you so
- 31:02Speaker 2: much credit because it feels like whichever team you're coaching,
- 31:05Speaker 2: they kind of take that personality of their head coach, right,
- 31:09Speaker 2: and we know you coach tough and confident and discipline.
- 31:12Speaker 2: How do you go about building that every single year
- 31:15Speaker 2: when you get new faces kind of Okay, here's what
- 31:18Speaker 2: it is, here's how we're going to go about our business.
- 31:20Speaker 2: And how do you kind of lay that out for
- 31:22Speaker 2: the new players that you have.
- 31:24Speaker 8: Well, I think it starts in recruiting. It starts.
- 31:29Speaker 7: With you sitting down with those young athletes that you're
- 31:32Speaker 7: recruiting into your program. Most of the time, they know
- 31:37Speaker 7: the style of play, they know my personality. They don't
- 31:40Speaker 7: know me know me because they have all the social
- 31:43Speaker 7: media lives they have to you know, Wade through and
- 31:46Speaker 7: they have all those things, but I think they enjoy
- 31:49Speaker 7: what we tell them.
- 31:51Speaker 8: You're going to be you.
- 31:52Speaker 7: I want personalities on that floor. It's a game of entertainment.
- 31:57Speaker 7: But once you you just kind of wade through that,
- 32:00Speaker 7: there's two things. If you will defend and you will rebound.
- 32:04Speaker 8: We're going to have success. Right now, we're scoring a
- 32:07Speaker 8: lot of points.
- 32:08Speaker 7: Guys, listen, I used all this non conference as basically preseason,
- 32:15Speaker 7: as you guys would say training camp in football.
- 32:18Speaker 8: I don't have our kids come in the summer.
- 32:21Speaker 7: I don't require them to show up and we go
- 32:23Speaker 7: and we grind in the summer.
- 32:25Speaker 8: I like my summers off.
- 32:27Speaker 7: They like to go play different USA Basketball teams and
- 32:30Speaker 7: go on vacations. So I look at these months as
- 32:34Speaker 7: I'm still evaluating it. I'm still trying to figure out
- 32:37Speaker 7: who needs.
- 32:37Speaker 8: To play with who.
- 32:39Speaker 7: So as we play these teams and we're scoring a
- 32:41Speaker 7: lot of points, I'm not looking at that. I'm actually
- 32:44Speaker 7: looking at we're pretty sorry.
- 32:46Speaker 8: The second half at.
- 32:47Speaker 7: Two Lanes, we allowed straight line drive. We did all
- 32:50Speaker 7: those things poorly, and I've got to make them better rebounding.
- 32:53Speaker 7: We got out rebounded, and we won by thirty that's
- 32:56Speaker 7: not cool. So those are the things that they've got
- 32:58Speaker 7: to do if they want to play for me, and
- 33:00Speaker 7: we'll get better. Did I think this team when I
- 33:04Speaker 7: signed those kids and they returning players came back, did
- 33:09Speaker 7: I think this is what I would?
- 33:11Speaker 8: Yet? Not necessarily early.
- 33:14Speaker 7: I had no idea that we'd be able to shoot
- 33:16Speaker 7: the three ball like we do well, let it fly,
- 33:19Speaker 7: and so that's why we're scoring a.
- 33:20Speaker 8: Lot of points.
- 33:21Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, coach, I think I think scored triple digits
- 33:26Speaker 5: and all of the games this year, So I think
- 33:28Speaker 5: I was. I was looking at those numbers. I'm like, man,
- 33:31Speaker 5: you have to be some sort of Hall of fame coach.
- 33:33Speaker 5: You try to find motivation of that because like in
- 33:35Speaker 5: the football, you go watch film, you learn from mistakes, right,
- 33:37Speaker 5: you learn, And you just pointed out a couple of mistakes,
- 33:39Speaker 5: a couple of sloppiness that you saw from the team.
- 33:41Speaker 5: But when you're scoring at that clip, it's probably you know,
- 33:45Speaker 5: there's a mentality involved when you're talking to two young
- 33:49Speaker 5: women at the age they are when you when you win,
- 33:51Speaker 5: and when you win by a lot and you're scoring
- 33:53Speaker 5: like you are, you have to have a coach that
- 33:55Speaker 5: can really kind of humble them and take them back down.
- 33:57Speaker 5: So is it difficult finding the coachable moments in.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Games like that?
- 34:02Speaker 7: The difficult part is to keep them focused. The difficult
- 34:06Speaker 7: part is to keep them from looking at that scoreboard
- 34:09Speaker 7: and get sloppy. So what you do in the course
- 34:12Speaker 7: of the game and a timeout. I may look at
- 34:14Speaker 7: one individual player and say, kids scored on you twice. Now,
- 34:18Speaker 7: don't let her score again the rest of the half
- 34:21Speaker 7: or the rest of the game.
- 34:22Speaker 8: Just give them little goals during the course of that game.
- 34:26Speaker 8: I like this team. When a coach can say I
- 34:29Speaker 8: like my team.
- 34:31Speaker 7: And win and go to work every day looking at them, Man,
- 34:35Speaker 7: that makes for just a great locker room. And I
- 34:38Speaker 7: really do This team is a joy to coach. I
- 34:41Speaker 7: don't have to deal with outside drama away from the court,
- 34:45Speaker 7: which every coach in America has to deal with every year.
- 34:48Speaker 7: And they pull for each other. I mean they pull
- 34:51Speaker 7: for each other. Look, got five or six kids.
- 34:53Speaker 8: Averaging in double figures and.
- 34:55Speaker 7: They're happy for each other.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and coaching That was actually going to be my
- 35:00Speaker 2: next question because you have so many players that are
- 35:02Speaker 2: scoring the basketball. And last year we talked a lot
- 35:04Speaker 2: about rotation and how many players you were going to
- 35:07Speaker 2: keep in your rotation. So when you're playing these games
- 35:10Speaker 2: and you're having a lot of success, like, is it
- 35:12Speaker 2: kind of hard? Like what are those conversations like maybe
- 35:14Speaker 2: with your assistance, because as you get closer and closer
- 35:17Speaker 2: to league play, I know you are having those conversations.
- 35:21Speaker 2: So like when you're trying to figure out maybe how
- 35:23Speaker 2: many players are going to be a part of a
- 35:24Speaker 2: true rotation, like how often are y'all having those conversations?
- 35:28Speaker 8: Well, I'll give you an example. In the film room yesterday.
- 35:32Speaker 8: It's all we did win the film room and we
- 35:34Speaker 8: watched two lane.
- 35:36Speaker 7: We didn't even prepare for off corn. I'm not worrying
- 35:38Speaker 7: about off corn. I'm worrying about LSU, right. And then
- 35:42Speaker 7: we went on the floor and we ran thirteen down
- 35:45Speaker 7: and back under twelve seconds because we not thirteen twelve
- 35:49Speaker 7: Excuse me, because we missed twelve free throws. Yeah, and
- 35:53Speaker 7: then we did a little free throw competition for a
- 35:56Speaker 7: little while. As I said with them in that locker
- 35:59Speaker 7: room and film room, I reminded them, I'm not I
- 36:02Speaker 7: don't have a set starting five. You may see a
- 36:05Speaker 7: different group out there every game because I'm I'm so
- 36:08Speaker 7: blessed that I have that.
- 36:09Speaker 8: Much talent, and you better produce.
- 36:12Speaker 7: While you're out there or somebody else is going to
- 36:15Speaker 7: get an opportunity. And that's not a threat. And I
- 36:17Speaker 7: know players don't like looking over their shoulder, but when
- 36:21Speaker 7: it's this new into the season and you've got that
- 36:24Speaker 7: kind of competition on the floor every day and practice,
- 36:27Speaker 7: hey next man up.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Yeah, coach.
- 36:32Speaker 5: So I wanted to give you kind of the chance
- 36:34Speaker 5: here you know, this show in the morning. I mean
- 36:37Speaker 5: it's middle of football season. We've been so hot and
- 36:39Speaker 5: heavy with football and talking coaches and talking talking everything crazy.
- 36:42Speaker 2: We we are a couple of things going on in
- 36:45Speaker 2: going on in the football program.
- 36:49Speaker 5: I know it's wild, but it's a it's it's the
- 36:53Speaker 5: first time we've had you as the privilege having you
- 36:55Speaker 5: on the show since the season started for you all.
- 36:57Speaker 5: So it's a new year, new look, new faces. I
- 37:00Speaker 5: wanted to give you a chance, like to introduce the listeners,
- 37:03Speaker 5: like kind of during this time of the time of
- 37:04Speaker 5: the day, like to the team, the new you have
- 37:07Speaker 5: Malaysia full Wiley k Cobol sixty five in the post,
- 37:09Speaker 5: like you got some new players, you got some returning
- 37:11Speaker 5: players you kind of introduced like this new team twenty
- 37:15Speaker 5: twenty six.
- 37:18Speaker 7: Well, obviously we can score the ball. And I would
- 37:21Speaker 7: tell people who will watch from Afar even if you
- 37:24Speaker 7: don't come to the games, well, shame on you if
- 37:26Speaker 7: you don't come to the game, because you're going to
- 37:28Speaker 7: miss out on seeing some tremendous female athletes that just
- 37:32Speaker 7: know how to play at an elite level. You're gonna
- 37:35Speaker 7: see happiness. You're going to see kids who have smiles
- 37:38Speaker 7: on their faces.
- 37:40Speaker 8: They enjoy playing.
- 37:42Speaker 7: I mean, there are a lot of athletes that play
- 37:45Speaker 7: these sports because they're just good at it and that's
- 37:47Speaker 7: all they've ever known, and that's all they've ever done.
- 37:50Speaker 8: It's like they enjoy going out.
- 37:52Speaker 7: There and getting a steal or making a big bucket.
- 37:56Speaker 7: And I think that I had no idea that we
- 38:01Speaker 7: would be this cohesive, but it's sure is fun, especially
- 38:05Speaker 7: when you get to the latter part of your career
- 38:07Speaker 7: as a coach. What runs coaches out nowadays? Look at Saban,
- 38:11Speaker 7: he got out then ales tired of that. The coaches
- 38:14Speaker 7: will get out because the kids, how many times have
- 38:17Speaker 7: you heard it, They're just different. Now I get to
- 38:21Speaker 7: stay in it because I've been able through the generations
- 38:23Speaker 7: of kids I've coached adapt. You don't have to change
- 38:27Speaker 7: who you are as a coach, but you have to
- 38:29Speaker 7: adapt in ways you motivate young people, and they make
- 38:32Speaker 7: me adapt because.
- 38:33Speaker 8: It is fun to go to practice.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Coaching Matt, you know, kind of joke there, but we
- 38:41Speaker 2: all know there has been a lot going on in
- 38:43Speaker 2: the athletic department, certainly, like for you, like when you're
- 38:46Speaker 2: like you're starting your season and so there's so much
- 38:49Speaker 2: going on. There's a lot of change. You get a
- 38:50Speaker 2: new president, you get a new ad, you're looking for
- 38:53Speaker 2: a new football coach. Like, is that something that you
- 38:56Speaker 2: even right now, you know, can even worry about because
- 38:59Speaker 2: you're so like ingreat like in the season and trying
- 39:01Speaker 2: to get ready for your team's run right now.
- 39:04Speaker 7: Pester, let me tell you this story, and this is
- 39:08Speaker 7: just put it kind of in perspective from me, my son,
- 39:12Speaker 7: y'all know. Kramer, Yeah, he said, Mom, have you ever
- 39:17Speaker 7: just stepped back to realize the amount of turmoil that
- 39:23Speaker 7: you have had to clean up without really realizing it?
- 39:26Speaker 7: And I'm like, what are you talking about? So he
- 39:29Speaker 7: took me back to my days at Baylor. He said,
- 39:32Speaker 7: do you remember you won your first championship in two
- 39:35Speaker 7: thousand and five and your theme was be the shining Light.
- 39:40Speaker 7: The previous year you had the murder in men's basketball,
- 39:45Speaker 7: and you had all the cameras there and all the
- 39:48Speaker 7: national trucks there every day. And he said, you just
- 39:51Speaker 7: want about your business, and you helped to erase some
- 39:54Speaker 7: of that by just being a positive by winning it.
- 39:58Speaker 7: He goes, let's go to the art briwt again. At Baylor,
- 40:01Speaker 7: you then.
- 40:02Speaker 8: Want a national championship.
- 40:04Speaker 7: To help erase some of that and put Baylor back
- 40:07Speaker 7: into a positive light. He goes, it wouldn't surprise me
- 40:11Speaker 7: if you did it this year at LSU. And I
- 40:14Speaker 7: just laughed and I said, you know, buddy, I just work.
- 40:17Speaker 7: And he says, but the timing of things that you
- 40:20Speaker 7: have helped indirectly without realizing it, because you know how
- 40:24Speaker 7: to compartmentalize mom and focus on your team. And so
- 40:28Speaker 7: I've been thinking about that ever since he brought it up.
- 40:31Speaker 7: This is not new to me. This is something that
- 40:34Speaker 7: I have dealt with at Baylor numerous times. I hate
- 40:39Speaker 7: it because Scott hired me. I don't still to this day,
- 40:44Speaker 7: understand all the political stuff going on behind the scenes
- 40:48Speaker 7: because I don't have a political bone in my body.
- 40:50Speaker 7: I love everybody, I love all cultures, I love both parties.
- 40:56Speaker 7: But I just focused on my job, and my job
- 40:58Speaker 7: is to put LSU in a good light in the
- 41:01Speaker 7: win basketball games and championships.
- 41:06Speaker 5: That's a great perspective coach, and like, and I think,
- 41:09Speaker 5: and it's great to like kind of look back on
- 41:10Speaker 5: that and Cramer for pointing that out, because I think
- 41:12Speaker 5: you get to that point because you're always yourself and
- 41:16Speaker 5: genuine and focused on the people around you and making
- 41:19Speaker 5: them better. And that's why you're a legend coach. So well,
- 41:22Speaker 5: appreciate that answer. We appreciate you.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And uh, that's just that's fantastic perspective.
- 41:28Speaker 8: Well, you guys, you guys make my morning.
- 41:31Speaker 7: I'm out walking doing my usual walk. Took my grape
- 41:34Speaker 7: juice this morning and gonna just walk the neighborhood and
- 41:38Speaker 7: think about what we need to do and practice today
- 41:40Speaker 7: to get better and bring you kids.
- 41:43Speaker 8: Matt, you married with children. I know, hester is that's right.
- 41:46Speaker 5: I got three happily happily Mary with three kids ten
- 41:50Speaker 5: eighty five, doing the whole thing.
- 41:53Speaker 7: Love it, bring them to a ball game, we love
- 41:55Speaker 7: to see games. Hey, Valentine's Day is the best time
- 41:59Speaker 7: to come. You better get a ticket. Now, that's when
- 42:01Speaker 7: we play South Carolina.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Oh, that's right, that is that is very true, coach.
- 42:06Speaker 2: You know we're gonna bring our entire crew, uh to
- 42:09Speaker 2: most games. They love coming. I mean, basketball games are
- 42:12Speaker 2: their favorite thing to do, you know at LSU. So
- 42:15Speaker 2: we'll be there. We'll be in the number, I mean,
- 42:17Speaker 2: my family, my kids. We take up half the stadium,
- 42:19Speaker 2: half the arena just by bringing the hester kids. So
- 42:22Speaker 2: we look forward to it, Coach, just like we look
- 42:23Speaker 2: forward to talking to you every single week here during
- 42:26Speaker 2: the basketball season. Can't thank you enough.
- 42:28Speaker 7: Hey, guys, you're welcome and love on those kids because
- 42:31Speaker 7: they grow up fast.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Absolutely, they sure do. They already have there she is,
- 42:36Speaker 2: Coach Kim Mulky good enough to join us. Going to
- 42:38Speaker 2: get that started every single Wednesday here during the basketball season,
- 42:42Speaker 2: something we've done for a couple of years and always
- 42:43Speaker 2: look forward to. All right, we will take a break
- 42:46Speaker 2: more OTB when we come back here live from the
- 42:48Speaker 2: Raise of King Studio.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Off the bench. I can't.
- 42:58Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 43:00Speaker 3: I'm just nagging of it.
- 43:03Speaker 1: From the locker room to the Airwaves gets off the
- 43:06Speaker 1: bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn's so.
- 43:14Speaker 2: We don't mind old watching.
- 43:17Speaker 8: Because if this.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Cross real close to my nerves of it, all right,
- 43:23Speaker 2: welcome back again, O. Gv here Man fired out to
- 43:27Speaker 2: have Coach Milky. She's the best every single week.
- 43:31Speaker 5: I used to love, like obviously last year, the last
- 43:33Speaker 5: couple of years she's been so I used to love
- 43:35Speaker 5: that segment of y'all talking to her because she's awesome.
- 43:38Speaker 5: She has like such great perspective on everything, and she'll
- 43:42Speaker 5: answer any question, like any question genuinely and like it's like, yeah,
- 43:48Speaker 5: that's so, it's amazing.
- 43:50Speaker 2: I do love that she will, Like you ask her,
- 43:53Speaker 2: she's gonna answer. I say, well, I'd rather not there, No,
- 43:56Speaker 2: rather not gonna tiptoe through the tulips on it. So fantastic.
- 44:02Speaker 2: I'm excited to get the family out there, go check
- 44:04Speaker 2: them out. They've got a couple of really cool games
- 44:06Speaker 2: coming up as well, not just you know inside of
- 44:09Speaker 2: the p MAC. I mean they've got like a game
- 44:12Speaker 2: against Louisiana Tech that's gonna be in the Smoothie King
- 44:15Speaker 2: Center in New Orleans on December the thirteenth. Obviously, Coach
- 44:18Speaker 2: Molkey played for the Lady Texters and so that program
- 44:21Speaker 2: means a lot to her. So it's gonna be very
- 44:22Speaker 2: cool to go. You know, check that out there at
- 44:25Speaker 2: the Smoothie King Center. She mentioned Hey in February Valentine's Day,
- 44:29Speaker 2: She's like, don't wait South Carolina game, They're coming to town.
- 44:33Speaker 2: So hey, good matchups.
- 44:34Speaker 5: We're also all thinking it. Coach, you ever thought about
- 44:38Speaker 5: dabbling and coaching football? Come on, we gotta search happening
- 44:44Speaker 5: right now.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Hey, look, get Jay Johnson kill Mulkey together, they can
- 44:48Speaker 2: be co head coaches. Go ahead, let's go. Let's go ahead,
- 44:54Speaker 2: go ahead and do it. Man. I look forward to
- 44:57Speaker 2: that every single week. All right, So nine, we're gonna
- 44:59Speaker 2: have I have would you Rather? Wednesday? And I'm just
- 45:02Speaker 2: letting you know, I'm gonna have a theme to my
- 45:04Speaker 2: would you rather? Today? Today? We're gonna do that when
- 45:07Speaker 2: we come back, and I'm gonna have a theme to mine.
- 45:09Speaker 2: So everybody needs to get there segment. Everybody needs to
- 45:12Speaker 2: get you know, it's like literally built in and it
- 45:14Speaker 2: like has the name of the day of the week
- 45:16Speaker 2: in the second. Our shows are just so jam packed
- 45:18Speaker 2: these days, so much exciting because we have two guests. Yeah,
- 45:24Speaker 2: that is a lot for you. That is very true.
- 45:29Speaker 2: That is very true. Matthew is not he loves our guests,
- 45:32Speaker 2: but he's not, you know, the one that wants like
- 45:35Speaker 2: we're getting we're getting more comfortable with him. We here, Yeah,
- 45:38Speaker 2: we we're a team. You get in your pocket. I
- 45:42Speaker 2: guess you're such an individual. Well no, I'm saying like
- 45:44Speaker 2: I've had guests for a while. It's okay, all right,
- 45:47Speaker 2: So coming up in hour number three, little would you
- 45:49Speaker 2: rather Wednesday right here on ot B Live from the
- 45:52Speaker 2: Raising King Studio, off the bench. All right, very excited
- 45:57Speaker 2: for this, as you know, like I am a team
- 46:00Speaker 2: Rucci through and through, been there for a long time
- 46:02Speaker 2: and baseball and softball players. If you haven't been to
- 46:05Speaker 2: Marucci's hitter house, they're in Baton Rouge, well you're missing out.
- 46:09Speaker 2: This place is full on superstore with everything from Roucci, Victis,
- 46:14Speaker 2: lizard skins, the stable. They got everything going on, plus
- 46:17Speaker 2: golf grips and athletic whear too. So you can try
- 46:21Speaker 2: all the hottest new bats from Marucci from Victis, take
- 46:24Speaker 2: them right into the cages and feel the difference. They've
