The Ancient Village Dog
This is a story about how deeply Indigenous survival and canine evolution are woven together. According to my dog Bentley’s DNA profile, he is one hundred percent Alaskan village dog. These dogs are the original domestic dogs. They evolved naturally alongside human settlements over thousands of years, adapting to their environments rather than being bred for specific looks or behaviors by humans. Bentley wasn’t a mutt. He belonged to a category that came before modern breeds. Every single one of his ancestors belonged to that same isolated, indigenous pool of Arctic dogs, completely untouched…
