- 1:19Speaker 6: Let's go to mini cams. All right, we're at many camp.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Yeah, so what do you guys?
- 1:25Speaker 3: What are we watching? What's what's on your bucket? I'd
- 1:28Speaker 3: say the first of these attendants. I mean, it sounds
- 1:30Speaker 3: a little bit basic, but that's what you're curious about.
- 1:33Speaker 3: The Tourgunia Andam. We've seen most of these guys arobout.
- 1:36Speaker 2: The days here.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I would guess that most of them will be here
- 1:39Speaker 3: today as well.
- 1:40Speaker 6: Some guys come them in you see continuing to work
- 1:42Speaker 6: for some things. But I think the first place you
- 1:45Speaker 6: have to start contendants.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Yeah, they've had really good attendance, I would say through
- 1:51Speaker 5: the voluntary portion of practice, emphasis on voluntary. They they've
- 1:56Speaker 5: had a really good turnout in those practices. So we've
- 1:59Speaker 5: we pretty much seen everybody come through at least one
- 2:02Speaker 5: practice here over the last couple of weeks, which has
- 2:05Speaker 5: been nice and been good for us, but also I'm
- 2:07Speaker 5: sure good for the team. But in terms of battles
- 2:10Speaker 5: or just competitions in this training camp, I feel like
- 2:13Speaker 5: we have a pretty good idea of most of who
- 2:16Speaker 5: the top line guys are going to be but you
- 2:19Speaker 5: look at wide receiver, that room is crowded and there's
- 2:22Speaker 5: a lot of bodies to work out in that room.
- 2:24Speaker 5: And then on the offensive line, there's a few spots
- 2:26Speaker 5: that I feel like are still up for grabs, mainly
- 2:29Speaker 5: left guard, and who's going to be playing next to
- 2:30Speaker 5: Will Campbell is a big one for this team right now.
- 2:34Speaker 5: A couple of different guys, you know, Cole Strange and
- 2:36Speaker 5: West Tweitzer, the veteran, have had reps there, but I
- 2:40Speaker 5: don't think anything is set in stone about who's going
- 2:42Speaker 5: to be next to Campbell.
- 2:47Speaker 7: A couple of years ago, first round pick. Finally healthy
- 2:50Speaker 7: this year. I mean he said last year at this
- 2:52Speaker 7: time he was still learning how to walk. So highly
- 2:54Speaker 7: athletic kid. I know this discussion about his draft status
- 2:58Speaker 7: what is, but he's here now is what is fourth season.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It's time to put it all together.
- 3:03Speaker 7: Made for cool Strange, huge opportunity for him at left guard,
- 3:05Speaker 7: and I'd love to see him to take advantage of it.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I think he's got plus athleticism if if he's able
- 3:09Speaker 3: to put it all together this season.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So what you're gonna see today is basically a walkthrough,
- 3:15Speaker 2: but you will see, you know, some positional drills. At
- 3:18Speaker 2: some point we're going to have to turn our cameras
- 3:20Speaker 2: off because of rules. But this is a mini camp.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It's a teaching environment. It's not training camp yet. There's
- 3:27Speaker 2: no pads. As you can see, guys are in shorts.
- 3:30Speaker 2: They're starting to arrive now getting on the field. We
- 3:33Speaker 2: saw Haro Landry get on the field. He's a big
- 3:37Speaker 2: addition in the offseason. So I know, for myself, I'm
- 3:40Speaker 2: going to be looking, you know, I'm gonna be checking
- 3:42Speaker 2: out these new guys. How are they fitting in, Not
- 3:46Speaker 2: just the offensive line guys, but guys like Harol Landry
- 3:49Speaker 2: and you know people that they added through free agency.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Chase On too as well, those two edge guys.
- 3:55Speaker 7: This defense has been largely remade, remade this offseason, and
- 3:59Speaker 7: you see bits and pieces.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Of it here and there.
- 4:01Speaker 7: It looks a lot different than what we're used to seeing.
- 4:03Speaker 7: And you know, it's a defense guy. I'm excited to
- 4:05Speaker 7: see some of those changes. I think this defense can
- 4:07Speaker 7: be very aggressive, and I think there's an aggressive tone
- 4:10Speaker 7: just being set across the team right now. You see
- 4:14Speaker 7: it with Mike Rabel running from drill to drill, preaching energy.
- 4:17Speaker 7: We've seen a lot of that through three OTA practices.
- 4:19Speaker 7: I'm sure this will be maybe even a little bit
- 4:21Speaker 7: more intense. I know our friend Paul, who isn't here
- 4:23Speaker 7: unfortunately today. We like to joke that really, mini camp,
- 4:26Speaker 7: like you said, Fred, is just an extension of OTAs,
- 4:28Speaker 7: but this is mandatory mini caamp.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So I do think there's a little bit of extra
- 4:31Speaker 3: juice here today. I know, I'm excited.
- 4:33Speaker 7: We're broadcasting live, We're doing a whole thing for it.
- 4:35Speaker 7: This is the last time we're going to see these
- 4:36Speaker 7: guys until training camp, so I think we make the
- 4:38Speaker 7: most of it.
- 4:39Speaker 3: It's a good day, and we'll be here tomorrow as well. Yep,
- 4:41Speaker 3: So you'll get two days of mini camp from US.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Live shows, and again at around two thirty we're going
- 4:48Speaker 2: to be having a wrap up show. So I know
- 4:50Speaker 2: we have to turn our cameras off at around one
- 4:52Speaker 2: oh five or so, but we'll still be here. We'll
- 4:55Speaker 2: watch the rest of practice and we'll wrap it up
- 4:57Speaker 2: around two thirty, and I think we might even have
- 4:59Speaker 2: a guest in the studio.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Great, so great. It's a big day here at Gillette Stadium.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Someone we haven't really mentioned yet, but all eyes will
- 5:08Speaker 2: be on Drake May as always. He started OTAs at
- 5:12Speaker 2: least the ones that we were able to see a
- 5:13Speaker 2: little bit slow this season, but he really picked it
- 5:16Speaker 2: up that last practice.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been fun to watch him and Josh McDaniels
- 5:20Speaker 5: together with McDaniel's being back, and we know this offense
- 5:24Speaker 5: is going to take time to come together.
- 5:26Speaker 6: There's going to be some growing pains as they learn
- 5:28Speaker 6: a new system.
- 5:29Speaker 5: And that's how I would categorize some of the things
- 5:32Speaker 5: we saw in the first couple of OTA practices with
- 5:34Speaker 5: Drake May was just getting his feet wet in this
- 5:37Speaker 5: offense and really going from the classroom and putting it
- 5:40Speaker 5: on the practice field, and the difference that did different
- 5:43Speaker 5: calls and the different way they do things and the
- 5:45Speaker 5: cadences and all that kind of stuff. But then we
- 5:47Speaker 5: were out here last week and he had probably his
- 5:51Speaker 5: best practice that we've seen so far of the spring.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Looked much more comfortable, much more in rhythm. Saw some
- 5:56Speaker 5: of those Drake May downfield Wow throws, big time throw.
- 6:00Speaker 5: So I thought last week was his best practice out
- 6:03Speaker 5: of the three we've seen so far. So you're seeing
- 6:05Speaker 5: it get better and better as each week goes along.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I was going to say. We want
- 6:09Speaker 3: to see it continue to get better.
- 6:10Speaker 7: Today shouldn't be a straight line, right learning a new offense,
- 6:14Speaker 7: There's going to be ups and downs.
- 6:15Speaker 3: There might be a couple interceptions. I don't think it's
- 6:17Speaker 3: the end of the world.
- 6:18Speaker 7: But seeing Drake may Moore in command and control of
- 6:21Speaker 7: the offense seemed in those early practices like he was
- 6:23Speaker 7: thinking a lot. You could see a little bit and
- 6:26Speaker 7: there no you know, see those things start to continue
- 6:29Speaker 7: to get better think would be a great sign. And
- 6:31Speaker 7: as we've been talking about all off season, guys, this season,
- 6:33Speaker 7: it's a lot on Drake may I don't want to
- 6:35Speaker 7: put too much on him, but quarterback, second year elite,
- 6:38Speaker 7: we know how important this position is in the NFL,
- 6:40Speaker 7: and I think we're all hoping that Drake may takes
- 6:42Speaker 7: that big step forward.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And if I'm Mike Vrabel and the coaches, this is
- 6:45Speaker 2: your last opportunity before camp, so you've got you know,
- 6:49Speaker 2: this mini camp again, you mentioned it was mandatory, Mike.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Everybody's here, rookies.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And veterans, and you want to kind of leave camp
- 6:58Speaker 2: on a good note because now you're going to have
- 7:01Speaker 2: this gap between you know, June eleventh and middle of
- 7:06Speaker 2: July when they start showing up again. That's a long time,
- 7:10Speaker 2: you know, relatively speaking, So you want to make sure
- 7:13Speaker 2: that you get a lot in these next couple of
- 7:15Speaker 2: days and that you ended on a good note both
- 7:19Speaker 2: offense and defense.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 7:21Speaker 7: I mean, I was just looking back at my notes
- 7:23Speaker 7: because I seem to recall and as I look at
- 7:25Speaker 7: my mini cam note from last year, you know, Jalen
- 7:28Speaker 7: Polk ends things with a fade TD.
- 7:29Speaker 3: It was a big play.
- 7:30Speaker 7: The defense did push ups put a cap on a
- 7:33Speaker 7: great spring for Jalen Polk, who carried some of that
- 7:35Speaker 7: momentum in the training camp. Unfortunately wasn't able to carry
- 7:38Speaker 7: it into the regular season. So they did on an
- 7:40Speaker 7: end on a half high note last year didn't mean anything.
- 7:43Speaker 7: Maybe not so much for Jalen Polpe, but I totally
- 7:45Speaker 7: agree Fred having a big play like that, just some
- 7:47Speaker 7: kind of play to feel good about as you go
- 7:49Speaker 7: into this next six weeks until training camp starts.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it's all about setting the table for training camp.
- 7:54Speaker 5: This is where you set that foundation. And we're showing
- 7:57Speaker 5: two guys on the monitor right now. Efton Chisholm wearing eighty,
- 8:00Speaker 5: who's one of those guys that look do we know
- 8:02Speaker 5: it's real yet or not? Probably not until we see
- 8:05Speaker 5: the pads on and see him in preseason, but Fton
- 8:08Speaker 5: Chishom's looked great out here in the spring. And that's
- 8:10Speaker 5: the type of thing that you do this time of year,
- 8:12Speaker 5: is you put yourself in position to then compete for
- 8:14Speaker 5: the roster and training. Canny came out with another one
- 8:16Speaker 5: of your favorites. Yeah, Land Larrison thirty four. You see
- 8:20Speaker 5: Davis Product, who led that level of football in scrimmage.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Pretty much every running back stat that you could think
- 8:27Speaker 5: of last year has that look of a Patriots third
- 8:30Speaker 5: down back. Chisholm has that look of a slot receiver
- 8:33Speaker 5: in Josh mcdaniels's offense.
- 8:35Speaker 2: So we'll see see you see Will Campbell number sixty
- 8:37Speaker 2: six coming on right there.
- 8:39Speaker 6: With Jack con in Boston College.
- 8:41Speaker 7: Yeah, which doesn't too many favors because Jack Connelly is
- 8:44Speaker 7: a giant human being.
- 8:45Speaker 3: If if anybody can actually.
- 8:46Speaker 7: Make Will Campbell look a little small, but Will Campbell's
- 8:48Speaker 7: six to six, three hundred and twenty fans is, so
- 8:51Speaker 7: he's got plenty of size.
- 8:52Speaker 3: But it's funny. When he stands next to those guys,
- 8:54Speaker 3: you forget how big they are.
- 8:55Speaker 7: Marcus Bryant as well, the other draft pick that they
- 8:57Speaker 7: had another huge tackle.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Out in the back of the field is where the
- 9:02Speaker 2: offensive lineman. We used to call it Dante's Inferno. I
- 9:05Speaker 2: think we should still call it that day, agreed. That's
- 9:08Speaker 2: where the offensive lineman go, you know, between position. When
- 9:11Speaker 2: they have their positional drills, they go back there. So
- 9:15Speaker 2: that's where they were heading out there.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 9:19Speaker 2: So otherwise, weather today, in case everyone's interested, it's a
- 9:24Speaker 2: little unseasonably cool. I would say, yeah, not too bad,
- 9:27Speaker 2: but it's overcast. In terms of the players, this must
- 9:30Speaker 2: be great.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I love it. I mean it's about sixty degrees.
- 9:33Speaker 2: A little windy, so that might affect any kicking maybe
- 9:36Speaker 2: later in the practice, but it's it's great weather for
- 9:41Speaker 2: the players for sure.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Last week, Deuce's boy, Jabrill Peppers was on Twitter saying
- 9:47Speaker 5: how hot it was at one of the practices we
- 9:48Speaker 5: had that ninety degree day here in Fox Parthing. It
- 9:51Speaker 5: was what last Thursday? It was pretty hot? He was like,
- 9:54Speaker 5: I think we practiced in Asana I think was the
- 9:56Speaker 5: what he tweeted. So today they'll have a nice day
- 9:59Speaker 5: out here. Always good when it's overcast too, and you're
- 10:02Speaker 5: not like the sun's not beating down on you in
- 10:03Speaker 5: the middle of the field.
- 10:04Speaker 6: So yeah, perfect weather.
- 10:06Speaker 3: If I can jump in here real quick.
- 10:07Speaker 7: We got a good shot here, right, two rookie edge
- 10:10Speaker 7: defenders Elijah Ponder number ninety one, who was undrafted guy,
- 10:14Speaker 7: and Braden Swinson as well, who was a draft pick.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Just two really interesting guys. You brought in.
- 10:19Speaker 7: Two veteran edge presence Fred mentioned Harold Landry k Levon
- 10:23Speaker 7: Chase on on both sides, they've been getting a lot
- 10:25Speaker 7: of run. But I think a big question for you know,
- 10:27Speaker 7: going into camp is can one of these two guys
- 10:29Speaker 7: or even both of them start to find a role.
- 10:31Speaker 7: I think there's opportunity in the edge position, certainly older
- 10:35Speaker 7: guys that they brought in veterans, so some youth there.
- 10:39Speaker 7: Those are two guys I'm gonna be watching a lot
- 10:40Speaker 7: this springing into the summer.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Yeah, especially that situational pass rusher role.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Can one of those guys coming on third down and
- 10:46Speaker 5: maybe offer a little bit more juice off the edge
- 10:49Speaker 5: and allow Keon White to kick a little bit further inside,
- 10:51Speaker 5: or you know, Harold Landry didn't exactly have the best
- 10:54Speaker 5: pass rush metrics last year, so maybe he comes off
- 10:57Speaker 5: the field for somebody that's got a little bit more
- 10:59Speaker 5: juice in the I'm hoping to that Braden Swinston kind
- 11:02Speaker 5: of turns it on a little bit as we go here.
- 11:04Speaker 5: I haven't noticed him a ton in the first couple
- 11:06Speaker 5: of practices, so maybe as we get deeper into this,
- 11:09Speaker 5: he starts to make an impression.
- 11:11Speaker 2: So you know, up until the point that they get
- 11:13Speaker 2: into pads, how do you judge an offensive or a
- 11:16Speaker 2: defensive line? No, that's a fair question, is a serious question,
- 11:19Speaker 2: like what are you looking for if you're one of
- 11:22Speaker 2: their position coaches or if you're Mike Vrabel or one
- 11:24Speaker 2: of us looking like.
- 11:25Speaker 3: How do you judge someone in these conditions? I think
- 11:29Speaker 3: it starts with communication and being all on the same page.
- 11:32Speaker 7: You hear an offensive line coaches talk a lot about
- 11:35Speaker 7: seeing it all through the same set of eyes. I
- 11:37Speaker 7: think this is where you set that foundation and the cutting,
- 11:40Speaker 7: loose rushers coming in, miscommunications, those kind of things I
- 11:44Speaker 7: think are the biggest no nos at this stage of
- 11:46Speaker 7: the game because it is really hard to judge physically,
- 11:49Speaker 7: how you're going to deal with, you know, your sets
- 11:51Speaker 7: and are you getting deep enough? Should they go back
- 11:53Speaker 7: and look at the film and they can probably judge
- 11:54Speaker 7: that a little bit, But for me, I think it
- 11:56Speaker 7: all starts with communication, starting to get on the same page,
- 11:59Speaker 7: building that camaraderie. We've seen a lot of different rotations,
- 12:02Speaker 7: different guys. Evan mentioned the battle at left guard. You've
- 12:05Speaker 7: seen many people at right guard too. You've seen a
- 12:07Speaker 7: bunch of guys at center. You see even with the
- 12:09Speaker 7: second group, so you know right tackles going in when
- 12:11Speaker 7: Morgan Mouses was out earlier. So a lot of opportunities
- 12:14Speaker 7: there along the offensive line of them all getting familiar
- 12:16Speaker 7: with each other.
- 12:17Speaker 2: While you were talking, Mike, our camo's were fixed on
- 12:19Speaker 2: Trevion Henderson, and there's somebody in that position where even
- 12:24Speaker 2: if you're not tackling, you can kind of get a
- 12:27Speaker 2: sense of his movement.
- 12:28Speaker 3: You know, his burst, the power in the way he runs.
- 12:34Speaker 2: You know that's something that you can tell, you know
- 12:36Speaker 2: when guys are even in shorts without pads and so
- 12:40Speaker 2: far he looks the part.
- 12:41Speaker 3: He sure does. I mean he floats, he floats through.
- 12:44Speaker 7: You could just tell he's got explosiveness and I'm really
- 12:47Speaker 7: excited about him.
- 12:48Speaker 3: How are they going to use him?
- 12:49Speaker 7: Though last couple of years feels like they got away
- 12:51Speaker 7: from being so down specific. We remember the days of
- 12:54Speaker 7: Sony Michelle's in on early downs and James White's in
- 12:57Speaker 7: on later downs. I don't know if Josh McDaniel still
- 12:59Speaker 7: prefer that kind of set up, but I think with
- 13:01Speaker 7: the three backs that they have between Ramandre Gibson and
- 13:05Speaker 7: now Henderson, you know, those top three, that all three
- 13:07Speaker 7: of them could probably play third down. I mean, I
- 13:09Speaker 7: think Henderson has definitely skewed more towards that third down back.
- 13:11Speaker 7: He's a little smaller, He's probably not going to get
- 13:13Speaker 7: the short yardage carries, but his element of explosiveness, I
- 13:17Speaker 7: just think the more you can get that on the
- 13:18Speaker 7: field and really make that an element of offense, the better.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 5: I think you're gonna see maybe potentially some unique formations
- 13:24Speaker 5: with him in personnel groupings because his explosiveness and his
- 13:29Speaker 5: speed is going to be a different dynamic than some
- 13:31Speaker 5: of the other guys. You know, receivers and tight ends
- 13:33Speaker 5: can bring to the table. So even seeing two running
- 13:36Speaker 5: backs out there on the field at once might be
- 13:38Speaker 5: able to have treyvon Henderson play a little bit of
- 13:41Speaker 5: a different role and move around the formation.
- 13:43Speaker 2: It's funny you talk about formations. A couple of weeks ago,
- 13:46Speaker 2: we had Craig James in the studio for a patch
- 13:49Speaker 2: from the past and yeah, thinking of the Pony Express, Yeah,
- 13:52Speaker 2: maybe you bring that back the Pony package.
- 13:54Speaker 3: That's where it came from.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Yeah, him and Eric Dickerson back at SMU, right, So yeah,
- 13:58Speaker 5: it just it's hard to watch treyvon Henderson and not
- 14:02Speaker 5: think that this team needs that kind of energy. They
- 14:05Speaker 5: need that kind of explosiveness and speed on the field
- 14:08Speaker 5: as much as they possibly can. But at the same time,
- 14:10Speaker 5: he's not the biggest of back, so you don't want
- 14:13Speaker 5: to overwork him and worry about you know, tread or
- 14:16Speaker 5: injuries or anything like that.
- 14:17Speaker 6: So there is a happy medium to it.
- 14:19Speaker 5: But even if he's on the field and they're using
- 14:21Speaker 5: him as a decoy, you know on a jet motion
- 14:24Speaker 5: or you know, a passing to the flat or something
- 14:26Speaker 5: like that, that opens up space for somebody else, it's
- 14:29Speaker 5: going to be useful. I've just been really impressed by him,
- 14:32Speaker 5: and even he's got a little bit even more wiggle
- 14:34Speaker 5: than I think I thought you know, you knew about
- 14:36Speaker 5: the straight line speed at Ohio State, but being able
- 14:39Speaker 5: to make guys misses another thing too.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yes, I saw earlier Milton Williams just walking to the
- 14:46Speaker 2: back of the field.
- 14:48Speaker 3: He's a big guy.
- 14:49Speaker 7: He's a big guy, and it's funny in retrospect now
- 14:52Speaker 7: it really makes a lot of sense when you see
- 14:54Speaker 7: the kind of defense that they are prescribing that they
- 14:57Speaker 7: want to run and what Milton Williams brings toy table.
- 15:00Speaker 7: I think Christian Barmore had some uncertainty coming into this offseason.
- 15:03Speaker 7: So far, it seems like he's a full go. I
- 15:06Speaker 7: don't want to declare that, but no, he's a full participant.
- 15:09Speaker 7: He doesn't look like he's limited in any way at
- 15:11Speaker 7: this point.
- 15:11Speaker 2: To me, that's one of the best things that's happened
- 15:14Speaker 2: so far this offseason. Is like you said, it seems
- 15:17Speaker 2: like he's one hundred percent.
- 15:18Speaker 3: It does. He looks ready to go. It looks in
- 15:21Speaker 3: great shape too.
- 15:22Speaker 7: Yeah, but it's clear why they brought in Milton Williams
- 15:24Speaker 7: and the impact that he can potentially have. Probably have
- 15:27Speaker 7: to play a little bit more, but I would put
- 15:29Speaker 7: the rest of the NFL on notice with Christian Barmore
- 15:31Speaker 7: and Milton Williams together in the center of that defensive line.
- 15:33Speaker 7: It's there both can be and I think that helps
- 15:35Speaker 7: a guy like Keon White. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, yeah, I'm.
- 15:38Speaker 6: Glad you brought that up. With Barmore being a full participant.
- 15:41Speaker 5: That's been probably the most positive development of the entire
- 15:44Speaker 5: spring is that he looks like his old self and
- 15:46Speaker 5: looks like he's he's fully healthy.
- 15:48Speaker 6: From what we have seen.
- 15:49Speaker 5: And you put him in Milton Williams on the interior
- 15:52Speaker 5: next to each other and some of the things that
- 15:54Speaker 5: they can do together with the picks and the games
- 15:56Speaker 5: and things that you can run on the line of scrimmage,
- 15:58Speaker 5: and then you put Keyon White in there as well.
- 16:00Speaker 6: I think he's had a pretty nice spring. We've seen
- 16:02Speaker 6: him in the backfield quite a.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Bit and maybe playing a little bit more of his
- 16:05Speaker 5: hand in the dirt and a you know, more natural
- 16:08Speaker 5: position for him than standing up on his feet at
- 16:10Speaker 5: two eighty five, two ninety. So those three guys in
- 16:13Speaker 5: Harold Landry has been pretty consistently, you know, the top
- 16:17Speaker 5: group out there.
- 16:17Speaker 3: On the deepense.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Okay, let's go downstairs and Mike Rabel is about to
- 16:20Speaker 2: start his press conference.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Good, good hike, Karen.
- 16:28Speaker 5: If Drake may as kind of a natural born leader
- 16:33Speaker 5: or someone who's more evolving into that role, well, I.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Think we're always trying to evolve in what we do,
- 16:41Speaker 1: whether that's leadership, whether that's learning the other side of
- 16:46Speaker 1: the football, that's learning each other. So again, Drake's you know,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I think it's a unique position. Being twenty two, it's
- 16:55Speaker 1: kind of unique in that sense, and so I think
- 16:58Speaker 1: that there is a lot of room to grow. I
- 16:59Speaker 1: think there's a lot of natural leadership qualities. I think
- 17:03Speaker 1: I have to encourage him and continue to encourage him
- 17:05Speaker 1: and to put him in those positions to do that
- 17:08Speaker 1: so that the players understand, you know, that there's a
- 17:11Speaker 1: different version of all of us. There's one that's maybe
- 17:13Speaker 1: off the field, that there's one in the meeting room,
- 17:15Speaker 1: and then there's a version on the field which we
- 17:17Speaker 1: all have to understand is somewhat different than what it
- 17:20Speaker 1: may be off the field.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Makes a good leader as a quarterback, like.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I think, I don't think it matters if you're a
- 17:28Speaker 1: quarterback or a you know, offensive lineman or a running
- 17:32Speaker 1: back or defensive back. It's it's about your ability to
- 17:35Speaker 1: reach certain players that maybe you know, again, we don't
- 17:41Speaker 1: want to have any gaps, and so hopefully that you
- 17:43Speaker 1: know what to do, that you're prepared, you do the
- 17:46Speaker 1: things right the right way. You're a good listener. I
- 17:49Speaker 1: think you can adapt to what happens and adapt to
- 17:51Speaker 1: the people that you're talking to, maybe based on what
- 17:55Speaker 1: they they need, as far as sometimes people need a
- 18:01Speaker 1: little different encouraging and sometimes you need a little bit
- 18:04Speaker 1: firmer hand and maybe a little bit more firmer stance.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And I think that's all important of understanding and getting
- 18:10Speaker 1: to know each person before you can can start to
- 18:14Speaker 1: lead them. Like, yeah, is it kind of reviewing the
- 18:18Speaker 1: things you've done in the spring?
- 18:19Speaker 3: Is it competing? Is it setting the stage.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Full with Campbell?
- 18:21Speaker 5: Bill?
- 18:21Speaker 1: I think that's where things have kind of changed. This
- 18:24Speaker 1: is just an extension of the last nine or ten
- 18:28Speaker 1: days that we've had on the field. That's going to
- 18:30Speaker 1: look the same. They're just the only difference is that
- 18:32Speaker 1: there's the time constraint isn't the same. We're not under
- 18:36Speaker 1: the same time So we're going to continue on with
- 18:39Speaker 1: our installation, you know, start to try to put first, second,
- 18:43Speaker 1: third down together, move down into the red zone and
- 18:47Speaker 1: so all those things that you talked about as far
- 18:49Speaker 1: as is competing, that's never going to change when we
- 18:52Speaker 1: come out here to practice. We just have to understand that,
- 18:55Speaker 1: you know, there's parameters to how we compete and stand
- 18:58Speaker 1: away from the quarterback can stand off the ground and
- 19:01Speaker 1: not going through receivers without pads on. So really for us,
- 19:04Speaker 1: nothing's going to change from the first three weeks.
- 19:09Speaker 5: How was steff On Digg's done since you know, coming
- 19:11Speaker 5: to New England last week?
- 19:12Speaker 2: Good?
- 19:13Speaker 1: I mean just trying to you know, figure out where
- 19:17Speaker 1: where everything is and and you know, what his role
- 19:20Speaker 1: is and making sure that as we add those situations
- 19:23Speaker 1: the third down and no huddle in the red zone,
- 19:26Speaker 1: that he's staying up on it. It's working hard in
- 19:28Speaker 1: his in his rehab. When he can certain drills he
- 19:32Speaker 1: can be out there, and there's certain drills that he
- 19:34Speaker 1: he won't be. But I think he's engaged and uh
- 19:37Speaker 1: they're there, you know. I like his energy.
- 19:39Speaker 8: Christian Barmber when we talked a few weeks ago, so
- 19:41Speaker 8: he was confident that his medical issues were behind him
- 19:44Speaker 8: from last year. Do you share that same confidence and
- 19:46Speaker 8: what have you seen from him in the time you've
- 19:48Speaker 8: been with him here for these three or four weeks.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Well, I'm not going to comment on Christian's medical status.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I'll leave that up to him. But what I've seen
- 19:57Speaker 1: as a player that is excited, that is coachable, extremely coachable,
- 20:04Speaker 1: has some versatility. He's rushed inside, he's lined up outside,
- 20:08Speaker 1: It's worked extremely hard. You've seen him chase and play
- 20:11Speaker 1: with great effort and just down the field and excited
- 20:14Speaker 1: to see where he's at. But I've seen a lot
- 20:16Speaker 1: of just improvement and a lot of engagement from him
- 20:21Speaker 1: since the time that we've been here.
- 20:23Speaker 7: Experience very early.
- 20:25Speaker 1: But looking at that defensive front, kind of following up
- 20:27Speaker 1: on that little bit, how is that group coming together
- 20:29Speaker 1: with Milton and Christian and Kan altogether. Well, there's a
- 20:33Speaker 1: lot of other names out there as well, so I
- 20:35Speaker 1: wouldn't just single those three out. I think that's that's
- 20:38Speaker 1: got to be a strength for us this year, and
- 20:40Speaker 1: those sat front seven, and we certainly invested in that position,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and I like how they're competing. I like how they're working,
- 20:49Speaker 1: and this is a tough time. It's just like, hey,
- 20:52Speaker 1: rush the passer, you know, be a physical presence as
- 20:56Speaker 1: a D lineman. But to a certain extent in the
- 20:59Speaker 1: spring and then pull back and then get out of
- 21:01Speaker 1: the way, no bull rush and all these things that
- 21:04Speaker 1: we give them. But but I'm excited where they're at
- 21:06Speaker 1: and they're learning a lot of installation. I think they're
- 21:08Speaker 1: working well together. I think they're communicating, which is which
- 21:12Speaker 1: is important. I think they're they're working hard, and they're
- 21:14Speaker 1: getting in shape from experience.
- 21:15Speaker 3: So how much can culture impact wins and losses? And
- 21:18Speaker 3: can it compensate for talent efficiencies?
- 21:24Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure that that's you know, I don't
- 21:26Speaker 1: know what the analytical number is, but I think that
- 21:29Speaker 1: there's certainly a way too. There's a style in which
- 21:33Speaker 1: you can play, uh that can lead to success. But
- 21:41Speaker 1: but but again that's never gonna make up for for
- 21:45Speaker 1: execution and and and players making making plays. But hopefully
- 21:49Speaker 1: that we're prepared, we play hard, and you know, we
- 21:51Speaker 1: take advantage. We get good enough where we can take
- 21:53Speaker 1: advantage of bad football going.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Through the spring. How have you gone to know to
- 21:58Speaker 6: Mario Douglass and what have you learned about him and
- 22:00Speaker 6: his play style?
- 22:01Speaker 1: Well, I love the person. I love his attitude, I
- 22:03Speaker 1: love his spirit. He loves a practice, he loves to
- 22:08Speaker 1: play this game. He loves football. That that shows. I
- 22:11Speaker 1: think he's gotten better. I think there's moving him around
- 22:15Speaker 1: different places, and he's picked up everything that we've asked
- 22:18Speaker 1: him to do, so that the more that he understands,
- 22:20Speaker 1: the more we give him. And so I'm excited to
- 22:23Speaker 1: see where he continues to be and continue to grow.
- 22:26Speaker 1: The competition it left guarded early on him. Well, we'll
- 22:29Speaker 1: be able to evaluate I think the lineman once we
- 22:32Speaker 1: get to training camp. So moving a lot of guys
- 22:36Speaker 1: through there, but really we'll have to make a lot
- 22:40Speaker 1: of those decisions and determinations once once we get to
- 22:42Speaker 1: training camp and there's pads and start stacking some days together.
- 22:46Speaker 1: This is purely a passing camp, and so I don't
- 22:50Speaker 1: know if you get a full evaluation without shoulder pads
- 22:52Speaker 1: on as an offensive lineman.
- 22:54Speaker 3: You said it's a passing the camp.
- 22:55Speaker 1: What do you see problem the receiver.
- 22:57Speaker 6: There's obviously a lot of guys. You see a big
- 22:59Speaker 6: storting out part of the screen.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Well, I think guys are stepping up and taking advantage
- 23:04Speaker 1: of opportunities, or some guys that are working off on
- 23:06Speaker 1: the side. Uh, some guys that have haven't been available
- 23:09Speaker 1: to us, And I think that every day somebody shows
- 23:15Speaker 1: us something, it's can we continue to do it consistently? Right,
- 23:18Speaker 1: We'll go down in the red zone and see who
- 23:21Speaker 1: can kind of catch, you know, maybe make some plays
- 23:23Speaker 1: and contested catches and tight windows. And but but I
- 23:28Speaker 1: but I like how they've worked. I've liked how they've responded,
- 23:31Speaker 1: you know, thrown a lot at them now with you know,
- 23:34Speaker 1: first second, third down and then adding red zone and
- 23:37Speaker 1: no huddle. So hopefully you know they're ready to go
- 23:41Speaker 1: today with all those situations. Your analytics can't.
- 23:44Speaker 8: Sling the practice on one says that something you've done
- 23:46Speaker 8: in the past, and what's the thinking behind that.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I just felt like, hopefully we can get two good
- 23:52Speaker 1: days of work here and and get going on to
- 23:54Speaker 1: the off season program and we'll still work.
- 23:57Speaker 3: I just.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Then want to come out. We'll be out on the field,
- 24:02Speaker 1: we'll be lifting and running and meeting.
- 24:04Speaker 8: How do you do about analytics as a tool, the
- 24:06Speaker 8: advent of analytics and how much it's.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Changed in the fifteen to twenty years.
- 24:10Speaker 8: Some people mean on it heavily, some people use it
- 24:14Speaker 8: as kind of a guide.
- 24:14Speaker 3: What do you do?
- 24:15Speaker 1: We want to use technology to the best of our ability?
- 24:21Speaker 1: And what we can do to help us be more efficient,
- 24:24Speaker 1: to help us make better decisions and formed decisions. I
- 24:28Speaker 1: don't think it's that. I don't think you can rely
- 24:32Speaker 1: and base every decision off the numbers, But I also
- 24:36Speaker 1: think that those are important to ask questions and then
- 24:38Speaker 1: be able to follow up and come to a sound
- 24:42Speaker 1: decision on everything we do, personnel, coaching decisions, player health
- 24:49Speaker 1: and safety, strength and conditioning, every aspect of our program.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Hopefully we'll have some analytical background and data that we
- 24:59Speaker 1: can rely on on that they can ask questions, and
- 25:02Speaker 1: then when you look at coaching and self scout and
- 25:04Speaker 1: an opponent breakdown how we become more efficient, uh with
- 25:08Speaker 1: with that system.
- 25:10Speaker 3: A couple of questions.
- 25:11Speaker 4: About leadership at Drake a little bit earlier, just wanted
- 25:13Speaker 4: to fall up on one thing. How have you seen
- 25:16Speaker 4: him kind of handle that balance? I imagine it's difficult
- 25:19Speaker 4: to balance between being the guy that everybody likes and
- 25:21Speaker 4: wants to be around, but also being demanding.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Is that something they, Yeah, this is pro football. I
- 25:26Speaker 1: don't think everybody's gonna like you. I don't think that
- 25:28Speaker 1: that's something that that is possible, and we have to
- 25:32Speaker 1: just we have to do our job. We have to
- 25:33Speaker 1: make sure that we're prepared and that ultimately the players
- 25:38Speaker 1: can hold each other accountable to to play to our
- 25:40Speaker 1: standard and play to our identity and and know what
- 25:44Speaker 1: to do and perform an ability to maybe push guys
- 25:48Speaker 1: and not care about what that's that's that's evolving, and
- 25:51Speaker 1: that's that's a work in progress. I think we're all
- 25:54Speaker 1: learning each other a little bit. I think we're all,
- 25:57Speaker 1: you know, kind of learning the system and learning the plays,
- 25:59Speaker 1: and once we we master it, I think that's going
- 26:02Speaker 1: to start to separate itself.
- 26:05Speaker 4: With one of the assistants he brought in, I don't
- 26:06Speaker 4: think you had so much experience with as some of
- 26:08Speaker 4: the others. Hey, what appealed to you about him joining
- 26:11Speaker 4: the staff And since he was hired, what has he done.
- 26:13Speaker 3: With the edge group to help him along.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Mike's a good team. He's a very good pass rush teacher.
- 26:20Speaker 1: He's a excellent teacher that breaks film down, that can
- 26:24Speaker 1: explain moves, that can show guys these moves. He's coached
- 26:26Speaker 1: a lot of good pass rushers, whether they're in a
- 26:29Speaker 1: two point stance a three point stance, they had a
- 26:31Speaker 1: certain play style. The thing I really appreciate about appreciate
- 26:34Speaker 1: about Mike is he can cater into every play style
- 26:37Speaker 1: and skill set and he'll show KC moves and he'll
- 26:42Speaker 1: show Keon different moves and one may be better at
- 26:44Speaker 1: another one, and so it's not one size fits all,
- 26:47Speaker 1: and he's able to coach to all those different guys
- 26:49Speaker 1: and I think you'll see it and have seen it
- 26:53Speaker 1: on translate to the practice field. I think the moves
- 26:56Speaker 1: and the things that they do an individual translates to
- 26:58Speaker 1: the team. So that's the thing we want to do
- 27:00Speaker 1: is make sure that our drills translate to the team
- 27:03Speaker 1: periods and then ultimately to the games.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Josh McDaniels questions guys.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels mentioned that some of the offensive coaches were
- 27:09Speaker 4: showing him cut ups at things he wanted to integrate.
- 27:11Speaker 4: I'm curious, how important was it for you to integrate
- 27:13Speaker 4: some of those principles and what is it about maybe
- 27:14Speaker 4: some West Coast things that you wanted to bring here
- 27:16Speaker 4: to New England.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I think they are always that you want to have
- 27:21Speaker 1: a very inclusive staff. You want to make sure that
- 27:23Speaker 1: people feel comfortable sharing ideas. We understand that not everybody's
- 27:27Speaker 1: idea is going to get used, and that goes for defense,
- 27:30Speaker 1: that goes for offense. You know, we have to come
- 27:33Speaker 1: together and decide what's best for the football team and
- 27:36Speaker 1: you know what our players can handle, and again, what
- 27:40Speaker 1: can can marry with what we're already doing, and what
- 27:43Speaker 1: are some some change ups to those things. So I
- 27:46Speaker 1: love the ideas that everybody has been able to bring
- 27:48Speaker 1: and then hopefully we can blend it here in training camp.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Here there'll be a couple of players for personal reasons,
- 27:58Speaker 1: but other than that, we don't have any holdouts, if
- 28:02Speaker 1: that's what you mean. But there's a couple personal situations
- 28:06Speaker 1: that are going to keep a couple guys from being
- 28:08Speaker 1: out here.
- 28:12Speaker 3: That's Mike Rabel with his opening mini camp press conference.
- 28:16Speaker 2: And I don't know about you guys, but one thing
- 28:18Speaker 2: that really kind of struck me was when he was
- 28:21Speaker 2: talking about Christian Barmore and he was talking about he's coachable,
- 28:24Speaker 2: he's excited. We probably know more about Christian Barber than
- 28:28Speaker 2: Mike Rabel, does you know what I mean? Because you
- 28:31Speaker 2: forget that, like, yeah, we've had Christian Barmer here for
- 28:33Speaker 2: a couple of years, but Mike Rabel hasn't.
- 28:36Speaker 3: He's new to him.
- 28:37Speaker 2: So when I hear him say, well he's coachable, why
- 28:40Speaker 2: did he choose that adjective that descriptor that's a good
- 28:43Speaker 2: sign that in Mike Rabel's mind he's taking in what
- 28:48Speaker 2: we're telling him.
- 28:50Speaker 6: So that kind of struck out, And.
- 28:51Speaker 2: So that goes for all the veterans that we're so
- 28:54Speaker 2: accustomed to that we know a lot about, but Mike
- 28:57Speaker 2: Rabel's learning for the first time, and they're learning about
- 29:01Speaker 2: their coach as well.
- 29:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I found myself wondering sometimes, like a new coach
- 29:05Speaker 7: comes into a system like this, you need to learn
- 29:08Speaker 7: a lot of the players you're gonna have. So how
- 29:09Speaker 7: what's that study like breaking down your players that you're
- 29:12Speaker 7: going to have. But you're right, Fred as the as
- 29:14Speaker 7: the head coach, he's got a lot to do. Great
- 29:16Speaker 7: to hear that perspective on bar Moore didn't anticipate he
- 29:20Speaker 7: was going to dive too much into the problems. And
- 29:23Speaker 7: you know, if they're behind him or not, but overall
- 29:25Speaker 7: he's out there. He's out here again today I heard
- 29:28Speaker 7: Mike two mentioned at the end some of the guys
- 29:31Speaker 7: that haven't I haven't checked off yet. Did see Julani
- 29:34Speaker 7: Tavai here looks like his leg is wrapped. He got
- 29:36Speaker 7: injured in the last practice that we saw. Reports were
- 29:39Speaker 7: probably out till training camp with a with a calf injury.
- 29:42Speaker 3: But just a few players. I don't know.
- 29:43Speaker 7: Ivan, you can chime in if you've seen any of
- 29:45Speaker 7: these guys, but ninety nine key On White, I haven't
- 29:47Speaker 7: seen yet, sixty nine Cold Strange, Matt Collins, we haven't
- 29:51Speaker 7: really seen him all spring. He's been essentially a coach
- 29:54Speaker 7: working with some of the players he's been around, but
- 29:57Speaker 7: not in Pats And last one I have is Miles
- 29:59Speaker 7: Battle and West Schweitzer. So just a handful of guys
- 30:02Speaker 7: who happened around, but ke On White and Cole Strain
- 30:04Speaker 7: is probably the most notable. Two guys that we haven't
- 30:07Speaker 7: checked off yet might be the two that that Mike
- 30:09Speaker 7: was talking about.
- 30:10Speaker 2: And it's funny, you know what a difference from the
- 30:12Speaker 2: past here when Rabel gets right to the point where
- 30:15Speaker 2: it's holding out. That's what I want to know, you know,
- 30:18Speaker 2: because that is really at the end of the day,
- 30:20Speaker 2: why you're asking.
- 30:21Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, one other site just to share that
- 30:23Speaker 7: I thought was was good, was Josh McDaniels walking up
- 30:27Speaker 7: talking to Stefan Diggs up the stairs. It looked like
- 30:29Speaker 7: they were laughing a little bit. Josh had his arm
- 30:31Speaker 7: around Stefan Diggs so excited to see what Josh McDaniels
- 30:35Speaker 7: is cooking up in the lab with Stefan Diggs.
- 30:36Speaker 3: It should be fun. Well, the question with him is
- 30:39Speaker 3: is he going to be ready on day one? Right?
- 30:41Speaker 3: But I mean it's amazing how ready he looks.
- 30:44Speaker 5: He does he does, yeah, I mean we saw him
- 30:47Speaker 5: last week and maybe we'll get to put some of
- 30:48Speaker 5: the positional drills up on the screen for people. But
- 30:52Speaker 5: I think everybody came away from that practice really encouraged
- 30:54Speaker 5: by how Stefan Diggs was moving and how good he
- 30:57Speaker 5: looked just six seven months off of surgery here from
- 31:01Speaker 5: that ACL in October. So I don't want to put
- 31:03Speaker 5: any timelines on it, as the head coach would say,
- 31:06Speaker 5: but I do feel like this is way ahead of
- 31:09Speaker 5: where other guys, just comparatively speaking, have been that we've
- 31:13Speaker 5: experienced here Kendrick Bourne last year and things like that,
- 31:17Speaker 5: where we didn't even see any of those guys in
- 31:18Speaker 5: training camp. You know, they were pup guys and we
- 31:21Speaker 5: never really saw them go through drills. So the fact
- 31:23Speaker 5: that it digs on the screen now number eight, like
- 31:25Speaker 5: the fact that he's doing these things already is really
- 31:28Speaker 5: encouraging not to get too excited.
- 31:31Speaker 2: I mean, he's been working really hard, and if you
- 31:33Speaker 2: work hard, you want Brunt Workwear. It's based right here
- 31:37Speaker 2: in New England and it makes work boots and apparel
- 31:39Speaker 2: that are built for the job site. Their gear is comfortable,
- 31:42Speaker 2: durable and named after the real workers in the trades
- 31:45Speaker 2: that help design it. You can even try brunt out
- 31:48Speaker 2: on the job and if it doesn't blow you away,
- 31:50Speaker 2: they'll let you send it back. Save ten dollars on
- 31:53Speaker 2: your first order at bruntworkware dot com forward slash pats
- 31:58Speaker 2: or with coupon code as that's bront Workware.
- 32:02Speaker 3: It's a new partner. Really excited.
- 32:04Speaker 7: I'm excited too, Yeah, Evan. Evan's got to get some
- 32:07Speaker 7: guardwork going here.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Non existent yard.
- 32:12Speaker 2: So yeah, we can see Diggs and the other wide
- 32:15Speaker 2: receivers doing their drills.
- 32:16Speaker 3: This is probably the most exciting thing going on right now.
- 32:18Speaker 7: I mean it really is, and I mean the fans
- 32:20Speaker 7: are now able to see little what we saw in
- 32:22Speaker 7: the last OTA practice, which was some of the leadership
- 32:25Speaker 7: of Steffan Diggs. You heard about it last year in
- 32:27Speaker 7: Houston that he was really a big part of of
- 32:29Speaker 7: getting guys like Nico Collins and Tanked Dell up to speed,
- 32:32Speaker 7: and you're seeing it here over the last two practices
- 32:35Speaker 7: what we've seen with Stefan Diggs, with him, you know,
- 32:37Speaker 7: working with Jalen Polk on the side, working on hand
- 32:40Speaker 7: fighting a little bit, you know, sharing his knowledge. As
- 32:43Speaker 7: much as he was brought here to play wide receiver,
- 32:45Speaker 7: I think there's also a big part of it of
- 32:46Speaker 7: bringing some you know, kind of that alpha dog mentality to.
- 32:49Speaker 3: That wide receiver room. Give everybody somebody to look up to,
- 32:52Speaker 3: you know, and look look at.
- 32:53Speaker 2: I don't want to be a debbie down or you know,
- 32:55Speaker 2: get negative on it, but there is that thing about
- 32:58Speaker 2: when you have that, you know, type of high profile receiver,
- 33:03Speaker 2: you do have to watch out because he's definitely a leader.
- 33:06Speaker 3: He likes to you know, coach players.
- 33:08Speaker 2: We've heard that from the Texans, but also you want
- 33:12Speaker 2: to make sure that he's leading them the right way.
- 33:14Speaker 3: And I remember when Randy Moss.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Was here, who was probably the greatest receiver that you know,
- 33:19Speaker 2: one of the greatest receivers this team has ever had.
- 33:22Speaker 2: He was a pied piper, but was he always leading
- 33:25Speaker 2: in the right way?
- 33:26Speaker 3: You know?
- 33:27Speaker 2: And so I know the Patriots spent a lot of
- 33:29Speaker 2: time making sure that you know that that was in
- 33:33Speaker 2: fact what he was doing.
- 33:34Speaker 3: So you just have to be careful, you know, especially
- 33:38Speaker 3: when practice is over.
- 33:39Speaker 5: You know.
- 33:40Speaker 7: The word the word that comes to my mind, Fret,
- 33:42Speaker 7: as I've thought about this a little bit is jump start.
- 33:44Speaker 7: And I think this offense has gone a long time
- 33:46Speaker 7: without having that kind of threat that Stefan Diggs still
- 33:49Speaker 7: can be.
- 33:51Speaker 3: But I think you need something for Drake May. We've
- 33:53Speaker 3: talked about it, like getting Drake made that weapon.
- 33:55Speaker 7: Didn't really do it a couple of years ago for
- 33:56Speaker 7: mac Jones in that year where you're on the QB contract.
- 33:59Speaker 7: So you know it's von Digg's going to be the
- 34:01Speaker 7: long term solution of why Probably not? But I think
- 34:04Speaker 7: that he has enough left that over the next couple
- 34:06Speaker 7: of seasons he can jump start this offense and really
- 34:09Speaker 7: give Drake May a reliable target that knows how to
- 34:11Speaker 7: get open in key spots.
- 34:13Speaker 3: I just there's nothing more valuable.
- 34:14Speaker 7: As much as you want to, we talk about contested
- 34:16Speaker 7: catch guys down the field, and you know, I think
- 34:18Speaker 7: Drake May has that skill set to hit those guys
- 34:21Speaker 7: down the field, but at the same time, it's the
- 34:23Speaker 7: guys that can get open. Like Stefante's absolute route technician,
- 34:26Speaker 7: and he's going to be a huge help to some
- 34:27Speaker 7: of these guys as they learned the playbook he is.
- 34:29Speaker 2: And you know, I when Moss was here, Brady was
- 34:32Speaker 2: the guy who was kind of, I don't want to
- 34:35Speaker 2: say his babysitter, but he was kind of the guy
- 34:38Speaker 2: making sure that Moss was always focused, always engaged. I
- 34:41Speaker 2: don't know if May has the time for that at
- 34:44Speaker 2: this point in his career. So you mentioned, you know,
- 34:46Speaker 2: Josh McDaniel's walking up the stairs arm maybe he's the guy.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Maybe he's the guy keeping him focused on football, you know,
- 34:53Speaker 2: at least while he's here, because he is going to
- 34:56Speaker 2: be the example for the other receivers.
- 34:57Speaker 5: YEA, his brother Ben McDaniel's on the text and staff,
- 35:00Speaker 5: so it was with Diggs last year, So there might
- 35:02Speaker 5: be a little bit of a connection between those two
- 35:05Speaker 5: guys already. But I think the encouraging part about Stefan
- 35:08Speaker 5: Diggs is that if he's getting his targets, he's going
- 35:11Speaker 5: to be happy and there's really nobody else to.
- 35:13Speaker 6: Throw the guard the ball to you as much as
- 35:15Speaker 6: you want to throw it to Stefan Diggs.
- 35:16Speaker 3: So when you don't know the way they're talking about schism.
- 35:21Speaker 5: If he's healthy and he's out there, he's going to
- 35:22Speaker 5: get one hundred plus targets.
- 35:24Speaker 6: This yere easily.
- 35:25Speaker 5: So as long as he's getting the ball, like any
- 35:28Speaker 5: receiver of that kind of ILK, as long as they're
- 35:31Speaker 5: getting the ball, I think they're going to be pretty happy,
- 35:33Speaker 5: and he should get the ball a.
- 35:35Speaker 6: Lot, a lot.
- 35:36Speaker 2: You see Josh McDaniel's talking with the other coaches right now.
- 35:39Speaker 2: They're talking strategy. I'm sure what they want to accomplish
- 35:42Speaker 2: in this practice, but let's talk a little x's and oh. So,
- 35:44Speaker 2: if you're an opposing defense and you're coming in and
- 35:47Speaker 2: you're playing the Patriots, and assuming Stefan Diggs is out there,
- 35:51Speaker 2: you know he's the number one target, what can Josh
- 35:53Speaker 2: McDaniels do to keep all the defense away, you know,
- 35:57Speaker 2: at least ease up the pressure on Digs so that
- 36:00Speaker 2: you can get him all those targets.
- 36:02Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a it's a good question, and it's one
- 36:04Speaker 5: of those where do you allow them to kind of
- 36:07Speaker 5: take him out and then it creates opportunities for the
- 36:10Speaker 5: other guys and it's that trickle down effect sort of
- 36:13Speaker 5: thing where Okay, maybe he's going to be more of
- 36:15Speaker 5: a decoy this week or something along those lines, or
- 36:18Speaker 5: do you use things like you know, moving him inside
- 36:21Speaker 5: or using him out of a stack you know, two
- 36:23Speaker 5: receivers on the line next to each other, or a
- 36:26Speaker 5: bunch with three receivers on the line of scrimmage and
- 36:28Speaker 5: get him off the line of scrimmage and creative ways
- 36:31Speaker 5: like that.
- 36:31Speaker 6: Usually when you move guys inside or you move him.
- 36:33Speaker 5: Into those different alignments, it becomes harder to like double
- 36:36Speaker 5: him out of the game, right because you can't move
- 36:38Speaker 5: the bracket all over the place, So like, how do
- 36:40Speaker 5: you go about doing that? So there are ways to
- 36:44Speaker 5: keep guys away from brackets or double teams. But he's
- 36:47Speaker 5: going to see the opposing team's number one corner every
- 36:49Speaker 5: single week, and you paid him this money because he's
- 36:52Speaker 5: supposed to be able to beat those number one corners,
- 36:55Speaker 5: not you know, consistently, at some sort of consistency level.
- 36:58Speaker 5: So that's hope is that he still has that juice
- 37:02Speaker 5: in the tank to go out there and get open
- 37:04Speaker 5: against number one guys. But Josh McDaniels is one of
- 37:08Speaker 5: the best guys, I would say in the NFL in
- 37:10Speaker 5: terms of offensive coordinators, of finding matchups and scheming guys
- 37:14Speaker 5: off the line of scrimmage to keep them away from
- 37:17Speaker 5: those traps of the defenses set for them.
- 37:19Speaker 6: So I'm really excited to see what he.
- 37:21Speaker 5: Has with Diggs because I think he's gonna move him inside, outside,
- 37:24Speaker 5: all over the formation. I don't think you're gonna just
- 37:26Speaker 5: see Digs running out, you know, into one spot every
- 37:29Speaker 5: single week. It's gonna be a ton of different looks
- 37:32Speaker 5: that they give defenses.
- 37:33Speaker 2: And while McDaniels goes over what they're gonna do on
- 37:36Speaker 2: the right box, feel like we need Scott Hansen in
- 37:38Speaker 2: here for the Dumble Ducks. The team is going through
- 37:42Speaker 2: their their conditioning and stretching exercises.
- 37:46Speaker 3: You see defense and blue offense and white d catch.
- 37:51Speaker 3: So he is here, White, you did, okay?
- 37:54Speaker 5: Ke On White's wearing like kind of a different color
- 37:57Speaker 5: practice jersey.
- 37:58Speaker 6: It's like white and blue.
- 38:00Speaker 3: It's interesting special. Yeah, so that's a two way player.
- 38:03Speaker 6: That's why you missed him.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Yeah, Travis Hunter e your heart out well.
- 38:06Speaker 7: That's good, and then it's uh, I guess really just
- 38:09Speaker 7: West Sweitzer Tyrese Robinson. So a couple of guys that
- 38:12Speaker 7: have been in the mix for that interior offensive line rotation.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Again, it's these camps.
- 38:18Speaker 7: You show up, you don't know who's going to be
- 38:19Speaker 7: at the voluntary ones a couple of weeks ago. It
- 38:21Speaker 7: gives a lot of guys different opportunities. Tyrese Robinson. I
- 38:24Speaker 7: remember a couple weeks ago him getting thrown in there
- 38:26Speaker 7: a bunch. So I think it's a lot of like
- 38:28Speaker 7: what you were saying, Fred, even you have a sense
- 38:30Speaker 7: of these guys, you study them, but getting to give
- 38:32Speaker 7: them opportunities at this point, it's good put them in
- 38:35Speaker 7: with the ones, giving them a look. It's along those
- 38:37Speaker 7: lines we talked about Fton Chisholm. You know, I I
- 38:40Speaker 7: I watched him a lot last practice. I gotta say,
- 38:42Speaker 7: I mean, the hype is real. Okay, he can get open,
- 38:45Speaker 7: he just he does. He has that savvy you know,
- 38:47Speaker 7: I hesitate to jump on these guys.
- 38:49Speaker 3: All right.
- 38:49Speaker 2: So so he comes in here, no one knew who
- 38:51Speaker 2: he was, and all of a sudden everyone's talking about
- 38:53Speaker 2: him because he seems.
- 38:54Speaker 3: To fit the part of that slot receiver. Yeah, what
- 38:58Speaker 3: what has stopped us from people knowing who he was before? Here?
- 39:01Speaker 3: Why wasn't he more well known?
- 39:03Speaker 2: Isn't because that certain position is just so special for
- 39:07Speaker 2: Josh McDaniel's offense, Like you know, yeah.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Yeah, Well he went to Eastern Washington, so he went
- 39:13Speaker 5: to a smaller school, and he had huge production at
- 39:15Speaker 5: Eastern Washington. Actually took down some of Cooper Cups records
- 39:18Speaker 5: school records at Eastern Washington. But he was at a
- 39:21Speaker 5: Shrine Bowl invite to he went was at the Shrine
- 39:24Speaker 5: Bowl this year, and then he ran a four to
- 39:26Speaker 5: seven in the forty yard dash. And when you run
- 39:29Speaker 5: that slow at the receiver position, teams are just crossing you.
- 39:32Speaker 6: Off as a draftable player.
- 39:34Speaker 5: You know, the same thing happened to Xavier Orstreppo out
- 39:36Speaker 5: of Miami who ran a bad forty times.
- 39:39Speaker 6: So you had the bad forty time.
- 39:40Speaker 5: He's not the most physically imposing guy out there, but
- 39:43Speaker 5: the production in the craftiness is definitely there of an
- 39:47Speaker 5: NFL player, And just talking to some of the guys
- 39:50Speaker 5: at the Shrine Bowl, they were disappointed that he went undrafted.
- 39:53Speaker 5: They really felt like he had draftable tape and looked
- 39:57Speaker 5: past the test of what you need to get draft
- 40:00Speaker 5: at that specific position. Like everybody's making a big deal
- 40:03Speaker 5: about the forty, but nobody's talking about the fact that
- 40:05Speaker 5: his short shuttle and his three cone was one of
- 40:07Speaker 5: the best at the combine.
- 40:08Speaker 2: I'm just gonna say, if you're looking at the slot receiver,
- 40:11Speaker 2: you're not looking at forty.
- 40:12Speaker 3: You're looking at quickness in small spaces.
- 40:14Speaker 6: Yeah, and so you know, yeah, you.
- 40:17Speaker 5: Tell me that he very very high marks in both
- 40:20Speaker 5: of those things, especially the short shuttle, you know, the
- 40:23Speaker 5: little twenty yard shuttle, well over the ninetieth percentile in
- 40:26Speaker 5: the short shuttle drill, and then also a sub seven
- 40:29Speaker 5: three cone and a really good three cone time too.
- 40:31Speaker 6: So you look at guys you like a.
- 40:33Speaker 5: Wes Welker, for example, who ran in like the four
- 40:35Speaker 5: to six range and the forty but just had off
- 40:38Speaker 5: the charts quickness. You know that definitely can translate specifically
- 40:42Speaker 5: to playing in that slot role.
- 40:43Speaker 2: And there you see eighty six right there, right behind
- 40:47Speaker 2: Trevion Henderson.
- 40:49Speaker 3: So you know who knows who knows that? I think
- 40:52Speaker 3: that the smarts is an underrated aspect of that.
- 40:54Speaker 7: Really hard to judge the football smarts of guys when
- 40:57Speaker 7: they're coming out, whether it's right or not. Josh McDaniel's
- 41:01Speaker 7: system has a reputation for being difficult to pick up
- 41:04Speaker 7: for some receivers. So if Ethton Chisholm's really smart and
- 41:07Speaker 7: is consistently in the right place where Josh McDaniels wants
- 41:10Speaker 7: him to be, you know, last week we saw him
- 41:12Speaker 7: starting to get some reps with you know, the upper
- 41:14Speaker 7: level guys, and that should.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Only continue if he continues to play like that, you know,
- 41:18Speaker 3: And I want to talk about that a little bit.
- 41:20Speaker 2: You know, the reputation the McDaniel's offense being you know,
- 41:24Speaker 2: complex and hard to pick up. Is it because it's
- 41:27Speaker 2: just so much to absorb or does it you know,
- 41:30Speaker 2: especially in the position.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Of the slot.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Does it rely on the player having a high football
- 41:36Speaker 2: IQ and being instinctual And that's something sometimes you can't
- 41:40Speaker 2: teach and the player either has it or they don't.
- 41:43Speaker 5: A lot of at least what in the past it's
- 41:46Speaker 5: been in the past. I mean, we don't know exactly
- 41:48Speaker 5: what it's going to look like this time around, but
- 41:50Speaker 5: in the past, they're reading coverage, so you're you're sight
- 41:53Speaker 5: adjusting or you're adjusting your routes based.
- 41:55Speaker 6: Off of is it man, is it zone? Is it
- 41:58Speaker 6: one high, is it two high? Safeties? Are they playing
- 42:00Speaker 6: off or they playing press?
- 42:02Speaker 5: And everything within the route has an adjustment to what
- 42:05Speaker 5: the coverage is doing. Now, when it's executed properly, it
- 42:09Speaker 5: can almost be unstoppable because guys are just breaking away
- 42:12Speaker 5: from coverage all the time and finding those open areas
- 42:15Speaker 5: on the field. But it takes quarterback and receiver to
- 42:19Speaker 5: really see the same picture. And I remember with Brady,
- 42:22Speaker 5: it was what Brady saw. It wasn't necessarily what was right,
- 42:26Speaker 5: it was what Brady saw. So if Brady was expecting
- 42:29Speaker 5: you to break away from this leverage or to sit
- 42:31Speaker 5: against that zone, then you did it the way that
- 42:33Speaker 5: Tom Brady did it. So all these receivers and Drake
- 42:36Speaker 5: May this time of year especially, are getting together and
- 42:39Speaker 5: they're figuring out, you know, if he's playing outside leverage
- 42:42Speaker 5: on me and it's single high safety, Like, I'm expecting
- 42:45Speaker 5: you to run this route this way, right, and you
- 42:47Speaker 5: have to be able to do it.
- 42:48Speaker 6: So that's the complexity of it.
- 42:50Speaker 5: And I think a guy like Chisholm, when you play
- 42:52Speaker 5: in that slot, you're reading all these different elements and
- 42:55Speaker 5: you have to find these pockets of space in these
- 42:57Speaker 5: high traffic areas. And he just has shown a nat
- 43:00Speaker 5: in the spring of being able to do those sort
- 43:01Speaker 5: of things. And you look at Julian Edelman, former quarterback,
- 43:05Speaker 5: Jacoby Myers former quarterback, like those are the guys that
- 43:08Speaker 5: have really thrived in that solot role, that have that
- 43:10Speaker 5: thinking man's game.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and eachis that's a good way to put it.
- 43:14Speaker 2: You see the team getting together in the middle of
- 43:16Speaker 2: the field here, just usually sometimes they do this where
- 43:20Speaker 2: Brabel just kind of sets the tone.
- 43:22Speaker 3: That's what we're looking for today.
- 43:24Speaker 2: You know, don't hit the quarterback, don't drop the ball,
- 43:26Speaker 2: you know, run through the play, finish the play.
- 43:29Speaker 3: You know, those types of things. Stay off the ground.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Just just a little reminder some of the things he
- 43:35Speaker 2: said in the press conference earlier and now he's probably
- 43:38Speaker 2: repeating to these guys.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Yeah, just go back to what Evan was saying real quick.
- 43:41Speaker 7: I don't know how as an offensive coordinator you can
- 43:44Speaker 7: run that kind of system that essentially is like a
- 43:47Speaker 7: living thing. I mean, it adjusts right like it's it's
- 43:49Speaker 7: a thoughtful thing. And ever go back to just run
- 43:53Speaker 7: the route buddy. You know, I know, I know it's covered.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Just run the route.
- 43:56Speaker 7: I know there are other systems in the league that
- 43:59Speaker 7: will ask you to to convert routes or to adjust them,
- 44:01Speaker 7: but as a coordinator, that's one element I can't imagine
- 44:04Speaker 7: Josh McDaniels wants to change. It's it's so hard to defend.
- 44:07Speaker 7: Like you said, if you have guys that are all
- 44:09Speaker 7: on the same page. We saw plenty of times for
- 44:11Speaker 7: twenty years. When it gets going, it's impossible to defend.
- 44:14Speaker 6: And not every route is a fully an option route. Yeah,
- 44:17Speaker 6: so option routes are.
- 44:19Speaker 5: You know, you basically have your your cart blunch, you
- 44:21Speaker 5: got your freedom to kind of get open. You know,
- 44:23Speaker 5: a lot of those option routes are you know, routes
- 44:26Speaker 5: that like Edelman would run right like that really truly
- 44:28Speaker 5: you could break either way and you had that total freedom.
- 44:31Speaker 6: Some of these routes are just conversions where.
- 44:33Speaker 5: Like, if this guy's playing off, I'm just going to
- 44:35Speaker 5: run a hitch, but if he's playing press, I'm gonna
- 44:37Speaker 5: run by him on the go route Like that's those
- 44:39Speaker 5: things are pretty simple. It's the option routes, and those
- 44:42Speaker 5: tend to be more in the middle of the field
- 44:44Speaker 5: that can get overly complex, and every offense has these
- 44:47Speaker 5: I should put that out there, like they're running this
- 44:49Speaker 5: in San Francisco with Kyle Shanahan, they're running this, you know,
- 44:52Speaker 5: down in Miami with Mike McDaniel. It's just the way
- 44:55Speaker 5: that it's stressed up, in the way that it's presented
- 44:57Speaker 5: that maybe it has been a little bit more complex
- 44:59Speaker 5: and pass with companiels.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, it's a passing league, and
- 45:03Speaker 2: like you said, so many teams do the same thing
- 45:06Speaker 2: and makes it really really hard to defend if you
- 45:09Speaker 2: do it right.
- 45:10Speaker 6: Yeah, and if you have a smart.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Quarterback, and that's the hope here in New England is
- 45:15Speaker 2: that we've got one and he's going to be able to.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Get the answers to the test, as Brady would put it.
- 45:21Speaker 7: Yeah, add on with a full house today, a wide receiver,
- 45:24Speaker 7: It'll be interesting to see how some of the reps
- 45:26Speaker 7: are divvied up in these two camps. It's not the
- 45:29Speaker 7: end of the world where guys are, but you certainly
- 45:31Speaker 7: get a sense of who's kind of in the mix
- 45:34Speaker 7: with the upper group and who's trying to fight their
- 45:36Speaker 7: way into that group.
- 45:37Speaker 5: Yeah, and you have the corners all one together today.
- 45:40Speaker 5: So that was something from last practice that you just noted.
- 45:44Speaker 5: No Carlton Davis, no Marcus Jones and the voluntary practice.
- 45:47Speaker 5: They're both here today and that duo Gonzales and Carlton
- 45:51Speaker 5: Davis has a chance to be really, really good. So
- 45:54Speaker 5: let's see what happens when those receivers get out there
- 45:56Speaker 5: today and they have an all pro on one side,
- 45:59Speaker 5: in a pro Bowl calib corner on the other side.
- 46:01Speaker 5: And can you have a practice like you had last
- 46:03Speaker 5: week for Drake May when this whole defense is together,
- 46:06Speaker 5: because I kind of think of this defense a little
- 46:09Speaker 5: bit as two's like Milton Williams and Christian Barmore kind
- 46:12Speaker 5: of that pairing up front, but the safety Dandam you know,
- 46:15Speaker 5: Duggar and Peppers. And now you have this cornerback tandem
- 46:18Speaker 5: that has a chance to be truly one of the
- 46:20Speaker 5: best cornerback tandems in the NFL. I really believe that,
- 46:23Speaker 5: especially with Gonzales. Just continue to ascending.
- 46:26Speaker 3: So to a end.
- 46:27Speaker 5: So we'll see this group out there together today, which
- 46:30Speaker 5: will be exciting.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Well, when the Patriots are at the best, they really
- 46:32Speaker 2: got at it in practice, I mean practice was as
- 46:35Speaker 2: competitive as the games. Guys like Rodney Harrison were, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 2: always chirping Brady, and Brady was chirping back. Who do
- 46:42Speaker 2: you think is going to be that a hole on
- 46:44Speaker 2: defense this year? That really gives Drake May the business
- 46:48Speaker 2: but makes him a better quarterback.
- 46:50Speaker 5: Definitely heard Carlton Davis be that kind of guy in
- 46:52Speaker 5: the past. He can be a chirper, he can be
- 46:54Speaker 5: someone that can do a little trash talking. Christian Barmore
- 46:58Speaker 5: is known for being a little bit of a charge
- 47:00Speaker 5: a talker out there as well.
- 47:01Speaker 6: So maybe in the pass rush, you know, he gets
- 47:03Speaker 6: in there and we'll let Drake May hear it.
- 47:05Speaker 5: But Davis, in a lot of ways, I just think
- 47:08Speaker 5: compliments Gonzales really well.
- 47:09Speaker 6: Gonzalez has got.
- 47:10Speaker 5: That Stefan Gilmour energy, a little bit quieter Sassin ninja
- 47:14Speaker 5: out there, whereas Carlton Davis is that more of that
- 47:18Speaker 5: stereotypical number one corner where he's got a little bit
- 47:21Speaker 5: of bravado and he's got some you know, pizzazz to
- 47:24Speaker 5: his game. He's got those long arms too. You just
- 47:26Speaker 5: look at the arms on him that everybody talks about it,
- 47:29Speaker 5: you can tell you just look at his body type,
- 47:31Speaker 5: that he's got tons of length and physicality and a
- 47:34Speaker 5: little bit of snarl to him too.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Pepper's is a little loud.
- 47:36Speaker 7: To a guy I'd like to highlight, though, is Robert Splaine,
- 47:39Speaker 7: who I think if you're just kind of tuning into
- 47:41Speaker 7: this season, he's the new man in the middle. Now,
- 47:44Speaker 7: he's the guy that's going to be running the defense,
- 47:45Speaker 7: calling it. We talked about some of the OTA practices
- 47:48Speaker 7: where it seemed like he was consistently blowing up plays
- 47:51Speaker 7: in the blackfield.
- 47:51Speaker 3: He just seemed to know what was coming. He's going
- 47:54Speaker 3: to be a big part.
- 47:54Speaker 7: He's a quiet guy though, I don't think he's a
- 47:56Speaker 7: trash talker, but he is going to be in the
- 47:58Speaker 7: backfield a lot, hopefully this year, tackles for loss plays
- 48:01Speaker 7: on the ball.
- 48:02Speaker 3: Those are the things hoping for.
- 48:03Speaker 7: Veteran Roberts Spulaine, who has been just an absolute tackling
- 48:06Speaker 7: beast the last two seasons with the Raiders.
- 48:08Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 48:08Speaker 5: I know, I know a few of the Raiders writers
- 48:10Speaker 5: and their pists that Splaine left in free agency. Like
- 48:14Speaker 5: the Raiders, you know, you always liked that when the
- 48:16Speaker 5: fan base and the reporters are like, oh dang, you
- 48:19Speaker 5: got our guy. And I remember last week he had
- 48:22Speaker 5: a good practice a couple of weeks ago and guy
- 48:24Speaker 5: in all the Raiders but was like, oh, what are you?
- 48:27Speaker 6: That's Robert Splaine.
- 48:28Speaker 5: Just you know, he's not necessarily the biggest name or
- 48:32Speaker 5: the guy that people are going to write about first,
- 48:34Speaker 5: but he's always around the football, and he's got a
- 48:36Speaker 5: great motor and a great instincts to his game and
- 48:39Speaker 5: you know, NonStop hustle sideline to sideline.
- 48:43Speaker 6: And he made one hundred and fifty something tackles last year.
- 48:46Speaker 3: With two years, he's got over three hundred tackles.
- 48:47Speaker 6: Yeah, so he's going to just be a tackling machine.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:50Speaker 7: And those two guys together, you just saw fifty three
- 48:52Speaker 7: and fifty four Christian Ellis, who had a little bit
- 48:54Speaker 7: of a breakout season last year, I mean was forced
- 48:56Speaker 7: into action due to injuries. Patriots wanted to resign him.
- 49:00Speaker 7: The Raiders signed him to a deal maybe to replace
- 49:02Speaker 7: Robert Splaine, and the Patriots said, you know what, we
- 49:04Speaker 7: not only want Splaine, we want to keep Christian Ellis around.
- 49:07Speaker 7: So he's six stuck around on a two year deal.
- 49:09Speaker 7: So long Patriots fans have been looking for more mobile linebackers.
- 49:13Speaker 3: Like you said, read the sideline to sideline kind of guys.
- 49:15Speaker 3: I think this is you know what this defense is
- 49:17Speaker 3: going to be.
- 49:18Speaker 7: It's all about speed, aggressiveness, and I'm excited to see
- 49:21Speaker 7: how I mean.
- 49:21Speaker 2: You know, Zach Thomas is the guy that comes to mind.
- 49:24Speaker 2: You know that's sideline, the sideline tackle machine, and people
- 49:26Speaker 2: made fun of him.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Well, it's all he does is make tackles. What's wrong
- 49:29Speaker 3: with that? Yeah, well, I think it depends. If they're
- 49:31Speaker 3: eight yards down on the field, it's one thing, but
- 49:32Speaker 3: if they're four.
- 49:35Speaker 6: He needs some of that too.
- 49:36Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you do.
- 49:37Speaker 5: Somebody's got to take the trash out right exactly. But
- 49:41Speaker 5: that will allow and I do you pointed this out
- 49:43Speaker 5: a couple of weeks ago. It is a great quote
- 49:45Speaker 5: by Splaine where he said he wants his defensive line
- 49:47Speaker 5: to get up the field and be aggressive, and he's
- 49:49Speaker 5: going to make them right. And when those guys fly
- 49:51Speaker 5: up the field, it's going to be the hit or
- 49:53Speaker 5: miss sometimes because you are being over overly aggressive. And
- 49:56Speaker 5: if he can just be that guy that makes sure
- 49:58Speaker 5: that it's an eight yard run on an eighty yard run,
- 50:01Speaker 5: then that's exactly what they need. You know, they don't
- 50:03Speaker 5: necessarily need him to make all the splash plays in
- 50:06Speaker 5: the backfield. They need somebody that's going to mitigate damage
- 50:10Speaker 5: in the middle of the defense.
- 50:11Speaker 6: And I think that's why he's here.
- 50:13Speaker 2: And you know, he even said it, he said, let
- 50:15Speaker 2: these guys up front make those plays.
- 50:16Speaker 3: I'll clean it up. I'll get you right.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Yeah, because we talked about it at the top of
- 50:22Speaker 2: the show. There is some talent here in the defensive line.
- 50:25Speaker 2: They should be making some plays this year. So then
- 50:29Speaker 2: you have guys like spelaying behind them. You know, that's
- 50:32Speaker 2: a pretty on paper, it looks like a pretty good
- 50:35Speaker 2: front seven.
- 50:36Speaker 6: Yeah, Mike Rabel just said it. It's got to be
- 50:38Speaker 6: a strength of our team.
- 50:39Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly what he said is his press conference,
- 50:41Speaker 5: and he's absolutely right. And you look at the stats
- 50:44Speaker 5: last year, flasting the league in sacks, towards.
- 50:46Speaker 6: The bottom of the league in pressure rate. They have
- 50:48Speaker 6: to find a way to get after the quarterback.
- 50:50Speaker 5: And I remember back in January that was one of
- 50:52Speaker 5: the first things he said at as introductor and press conferences.
- 50:55Speaker 5: Affecting the other team's quarterback and pressuring the other team's
- 50:58Speaker 5: quarterback is such a big part of of playing good
- 51:00Speaker 5: football in today's NFL. And they went out and they
- 51:03Speaker 5: signed probably the best pass rusher in free agency in
- 51:06Speaker 5: Milton Williams. And they bring in a familiar guy in
- 51:09Speaker 5: Harold Landry, who you know back in this system. I
- 51:11Speaker 5: think you hope that maybe his pass rush production goes
- 51:14Speaker 5: back to what it was two years ago with Rabel
- 51:16Speaker 5: in Tennessee. So even though the metrics don't look great
- 51:19Speaker 5: for Landry last year, I didn't remember. There was a
- 51:21Speaker 5: scheme change, there was a coaching staff change. There was
- 51:24Speaker 5: a lot of different things that they were asking him
- 51:26Speaker 5: to do, you know, just technique wise and schematically that
- 51:29Speaker 5: now that he's back home in this deep rable defense,
- 51:32Speaker 5: hopefully we get the guy if Harold Landry was the
- 51:35Speaker 5: Pro Bowl caliber player for the Titans for a couple
- 51:37Speaker 5: of years.
- 51:38Speaker 7: Just to echo, I know you already said it earlier,
- 51:39Speaker 7: but again, it just puts a focus on Swinson for me,
- 51:42Speaker 7: trying to get some young legs in there. I don't
- 51:44Speaker 7: think you want Harold Landry playing every snap, even if
- 51:47Speaker 7: he's being productive. You're going to need a third rotational,
- 51:49Speaker 7: third or fourth rotational guy, you know, key On White.
- 51:52Speaker 7: We've seen him show some flashes mostly from the inside.
- 51:55Speaker 7: How's he going to play on the edge? Chase on
- 51:57Speaker 7: more of a more of a DPR toviticity as rusher
- 52:00Speaker 7: last year playing across from Max Crosby, and he's on
- 52:03Speaker 7: Patriots unfilter, and he told us he knew he benefited
- 52:05Speaker 7: a little bit from that. But some questions, and I
- 52:08Speaker 7: just I would love to see one of those young
- 52:10Speaker 7: pass rushers just bring a little bit of speed around.
- 52:12Speaker 3: The edge, like a guy like Josh Ucha.
- 52:15Speaker 7: He had a very specific role, but I'd still love
- 52:17Speaker 7: to have somebody like that with some speed third downs.
- 52:20Speaker 2: Yeah, a little special teams practice here, Marcus Jones returning punts.
- 52:24Speaker 3: Yeah, good to see him. He's been He's been a
- 52:25Speaker 3: little bit in and out. Don't know if he was
- 52:26Speaker 3: dealing with anything. I know.
- 52:28Speaker 7: Kyle Dugger and Michael went You probably the most two
- 52:31Speaker 7: most significant players that seem like they've been limited. They're
- 52:34Speaker 7: still kind of working back from some things. Kyle Dugger's
- 52:37Speaker 7: been out here almost every time, just haven't really seen
- 52:39Speaker 7: him do much.
- 52:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I was coming off that ankle injury last year,
- 52:43Speaker 5: and the hope for with Dugger is that it was
- 52:46Speaker 5: the ankle that was that led to the season he
- 52:48Speaker 5: had last year, And if he gets back one hundred
- 52:50Speaker 5: percent healthy, then starts playing like the guy we saw
- 52:53Speaker 5: in twenty three instead of twenty four. And now you
- 52:56Speaker 5: have that back in the mix with him and Pepper's
- 52:58Speaker 5: back together and playing good football again. You can be
- 53:02Speaker 5: encouraged by that too if you want. But I'm interested
- 53:05Speaker 5: to see what happens with Marcus Jones in this defense.
- 53:07Speaker 5: Is he going to be the full time slot corner?
- 53:10Speaker 5: Do they really want a bigger body type in there,
- 53:12Speaker 5: because they've talked about that a little bit. You drafting
- 53:14Speaker 5: Craig Woodson maybe in the fourth round is a slot
- 53:18Speaker 5: safety that could be a little bit more sturdy.
- 53:21Speaker 6: At that position on early down. So we'll see.
- 53:23Speaker 5: It's fun to watch those three, you know, Davis, Gonzo
- 53:26Speaker 5: and Marcus Jones played man coverage because they can all
- 53:28Speaker 5: play man at a really good level. But is that
- 53:30Speaker 5: a full time role for Marcus Jones. He's obviously going
- 53:33Speaker 5: to return punts and he's gonna have a role on
- 53:36Speaker 5: this team, as you know, a primary punt returner in
- 53:38Speaker 5: defensive back, but is he a starter on this in
- 53:41Speaker 5: this defense?
- 53:42Speaker 7: I mean, maybe he's just a piece you know, in
- 53:44Speaker 7: the in the in the in the workbench, you know
- 53:46Speaker 7: that that when we need him, when we've got a small,
- 53:48Speaker 7: shifty slot that he minds up, lines up will with,
- 53:51Speaker 7: he might play a little bit more.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Or and when you need that double team in the
- 53:55Speaker 2: you know, because there's there's just elite speed that you're
- 53:58Speaker 2: going up against, and you know you have him double
- 54:01Speaker 2: with somebody else. You know, maybe more of a man's
- 54:04Speaker 2: zone thing where he kind of trails the guy into
- 54:06Speaker 2: a different zone.
- 54:07Speaker 3: He's sticky.
- 54:08Speaker 7: I mean, I like that him coming out of college.
- 54:10Speaker 7: I mean, he obviously has a little bit of a
- 54:11Speaker 7: size disadvantage, but I connect that slot position to the
- 54:15Speaker 7: safety position. And we've heard plenty of coaches getting asked
- 54:18Speaker 7: about to Dugger and Peppers, does that fit the kind
- 54:21Speaker 7: of free safety, strong safety mold you might want. But
- 54:24Speaker 7: there's a lot of guys, you know, Jalen Hawkins who
- 54:26Speaker 7: played a bunch last year, Marcus SEPs who came in
- 54:28Speaker 7: from the Raiders.
- 54:28Speaker 3: He's been a starter, a little bit more of a
- 54:30Speaker 3: free safety guy.
- 54:31Speaker 7: Del Pettis who played a big role for the Patriots
- 54:33Speaker 7: on special teams last year. Craig Woodson you mentioned, drafted
- 54:36Speaker 7: I mean, you know, that's six guys right there that
- 54:39Speaker 7: there's all some kind of argument for that these guys
- 54:41Speaker 7: should should play and should play on defense. But how
- 54:44Speaker 7: do the coaching staff see it all coming together? What
- 54:47Speaker 7: picture are they imagining? That's where that slot position where,
- 54:50Speaker 7: whether it's you know, Marcus Jones or Isaiah Boulden or
- 54:53Speaker 7: Craig Woodson, that's where the defense will really get interesting
- 54:57Speaker 7: to me. How do they want to play? Do they
- 54:58Speaker 7: want to play more speed? Do they want more size?
- 55:01Speaker 7: From that slot position? That's an interesting spot to keep
- 55:04Speaker 7: an eye on.
- 55:04Speaker 2: And you know, if the Red Sox aren't gonna use
- 55:05Speaker 2: and we can use Romananthem, you know what can he do?
- 55:08Speaker 3: Might as well do something right.
- 55:10Speaker 6: There's definitely a matchups from Marcus Jones.
- 55:13Speaker 5: You're gonna play that those two guys in Miami twice
- 55:15Speaker 5: a year, so someone's gonna have to get Tyreek Hill
- 55:18Speaker 5: and someone's gonna have to have Jayleen Waddle.
- 55:19Speaker 6: And he still has that ability to go run.
- 55:21Speaker 5: With those types of you know, shifty, fast receivers like
- 55:24Speaker 5: those two guys. But I've been really impressed with Craig Woodson.
- 55:27Speaker 5: He's probably been the player out of the draft class.
- 55:30Speaker 5: That surprised me the most. I think he's been around
- 55:32Speaker 5: the ball a ton, even going back to rookie Minni
- 55:34Speaker 5: camp when we were in the bubble and we got
- 55:35Speaker 5: to see them for that one day he made a
- 55:37Speaker 5: play on the ball. So he just seems like he
- 55:39Speaker 5: has a nice feel for the ball and in space
- 55:42Speaker 5: and playing those zones deeper in the field that maybe
- 55:46Speaker 5: Kyle Duggan and Jabriel Peppers aren't natural fits for playing
- 55:49Speaker 5: thirty yards off the ball like that in the deep
- 55:52Speaker 5: part of the field, But if Craig Woodson could do
- 55:54Speaker 5: that sort of thing, that frees those guys up to
- 55:56Speaker 5: then play closer to the line of scrimmage and be
- 55:58Speaker 5: more aggressive and do the things that they are good at.
- 56:01Speaker 5: So I'm encouraged by what I've saw from Craig Woodson.
- 56:05Speaker 5: You know, there was a lot of talk about him
- 56:07Speaker 5: being white, maybe the one consensus reach that they made
- 56:10Speaker 5: in this draft, and he's been impressive.
- 56:13Speaker 2: I thought, well, that's the kind of thing where you know,
- 56:15Speaker 2: when you see a guy like that in the spring,
- 56:18Speaker 2: then you keep your eye on him in the summer,
- 56:21Speaker 2: and if they start using him running with the ones
- 56:24Speaker 2: a little bit, then maybe they saw what you saw,
- 56:27Speaker 2: you know, and and okay, we want to see a
- 56:29Speaker 2: little bit more of this guy playing, you know, against
- 56:32Speaker 2: the ones, I should say, who've seen the puppy nipping
- 56:35Speaker 2: a little bit? And then you know, you put pads on. Okay,
- 56:40Speaker 2: can he keep that up when we put the pads on?
- 56:42Speaker 2: Does he do it in pre and that's how you
- 56:45Speaker 2: earn more play.
- 56:46Speaker 7: Yeah, that's the most fun stuff to me with watching
- 56:48Speaker 7: camp day in day out, as you see guys start
- 56:51Speaker 7: to get chances. And I always go back to Michael
- 56:53Speaker 7: Whenu as an easy example, but right out of the gate,
- 56:56Speaker 7: you just started to notice every day this guy this
- 56:58Speaker 7: six round pick, he's getting some run with the top
- 57:01Speaker 7: line and there seems like there's something there that he's
- 57:04Speaker 7: this coaching staff like, so saw maybe a little bit,
- 57:06Speaker 7: which is I'm hard to tell in OTAs, I think
- 57:08Speaker 7: you really got to get to training camp to really
- 57:10Speaker 7: find it believable.
- 57:11Speaker 3: But you guys know how it goes.
- 57:12Speaker 7: Injuries happen, opportunities open up, and guys are already starting
- 57:16Speaker 7: to maybe make a little bit of a push here
- 57:18Speaker 7: in mini Campinot's yes, stacking it up.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Stack days baby, as they say, Yep.
- 57:23Speaker 5: You always talk about that Theron harmon roll right, like,
- 57:26Speaker 5: even if it's not a full time role, but can
- 57:29Speaker 5: Craig Woodson come on the field and on third down
- 57:32Speaker 5: he can be the deep safety in the middle of
- 57:34Speaker 5: the field and it just unlocks everybody else to just
- 57:37Speaker 5: kind of do what they need to do on the
- 57:39Speaker 5: on the play and be the ones actually maybe making
- 57:42Speaker 5: more of the splash plays on the football. But if
- 57:45Speaker 5: he's deep up top and you can just trust that
- 57:47Speaker 5: if they run a deep post, he's gonna be there
- 57:49Speaker 5: and he's going to cover it for you, then that's
- 57:52Speaker 5: all you really need out of him.
- 57:53Speaker 2: You see the quarterbacks running through their drills. So right
- 57:56Speaker 2: now the Patriots are carrying three. You got Drake, made
- 57:59Speaker 2: Josh and Ben Woolridge. Yes, so those are the three
- 58:04Speaker 2: that you're looking at right now. Looks like they're looking
- 58:07Speaker 2: doing a little play action simulation here.
- 58:10Speaker 5: Yeah, that was the biggest thing just going forward and
- 58:14Speaker 5: with Drake may I know there's a lot of talk
- 58:16Speaker 5: about grasping this McDaniel's offense at the line of scrimmage,
- 58:19Speaker 5: but the footwork carryover. He had made so much progress
- 58:23Speaker 5: his rookie season with his footwork going from where he
- 58:25Speaker 5: was at North Carolina to where he ended up with
- 58:28Speaker 5: the Patriots, and how are they going to keep that
- 58:31Speaker 5: the same AVP was a big left foot forward and
- 58:34Speaker 5: the rhythm of the footwork and all that kind of stuff,
- 58:36Speaker 5: and it seems like it worked. You know, the boot
- 58:39Speaker 5: camp that they put him through in terms of his feet,
- 58:41Speaker 5: and that's how you control the ball. That's how accuracy
- 58:44Speaker 5: comes from the bottom up, and you know your footwork
- 58:47Speaker 5: and your mechanics with your follow through and all that
- 58:50Speaker 5: kind of stuff.
- 58:51Speaker 6: And I just thought he made leaps and bounds in
- 58:54Speaker 6: that way last year. So you just hope that that.
- 58:57Speaker 5: Carries over into this season and we'll see. These are
- 58:59Speaker 5: the types of drills that they do out here this
- 59:02Speaker 5: time of year to drill that kind of stuff. So
- 59:05Speaker 5: you're dropping back from under center, it's one thing to
- 59:07Speaker 5: drop back from shotgun.
- 59:08Speaker 2: That's that's he's gonna yell down and tell them to
- 59:11Speaker 2: get him out of from under center.
- 59:12Speaker 3: You want him in the shotgun.
- 59:14Speaker 5: I definitely would prefer to see him more in the
- 59:17Speaker 5: shotgun or even the pistol than under center. I just
- 59:20Speaker 5: I think it's more natural for him. I think it's
- 59:22Speaker 5: a better fit for him. But there's a lot of
- 59:24Speaker 5: advantages to the quarterback being under center in the run
- 59:27Speaker 5: game that you can't deny. You'll play action works ten
- 59:30Speaker 5: times better from under center than it does in shotgun.
- 59:32Speaker 5: That's just statistically proven out. So you know, I understand
- 59:37Speaker 5: that there you have to be.
- 59:38Speaker 3: Pro style, especially the pony express right.
- 59:41Speaker 5: And if you're gonna have me Trevon Henderson on the
- 59:43Speaker 5: jet sweep and Remonder behind him, and then you're under
- 59:46Speaker 5: center and you're.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Faking and you get the guys coming in underneath, I mean,
- 59:50Speaker 2: what's the defense gonna do.
- 59:51Speaker 3: They can't. They can't. They can't defend every thirty five
- 59:53Speaker 3: a game with that surrender. Just give it up. There's
- 59:56Speaker 3: Hunter Henry.
- 59:57Speaker 2: It's probably the right now, the most relied table pass
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: catcher that Drake May has.
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: I mean, of all the signings they made back in
- 1:00:04Speaker 7: twenty twenty one, I mean, Hunter Henry's really been an
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: anchor for this offense for a few different quarterbacks, and
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: he just he means a lot to Drake. I think
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: it was a no brainer, you know, bringing him back here,
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: keeping him around. I'd like to see maybe Jahem Bell
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: do a little bit. He had kind of a rough
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: practice last week and a couple drops and you know,
- 1:00:21Speaker 7: you could seem like he was fighting it a little bit.
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: I still think he looks good on the on the move,
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: on the hoof runs pretty well, pretty big. But it
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: seems like right now Patriots are pretty well set. Austin
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: Hooper missed a couple of the voluntary practices he's out
- 1:00:35Speaker 7: here today, so it looks like they're pretty set with
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: those two guys for now.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: Yeah, big one to know to number forty six there
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: on your screen. Brock Lampy the one traditional full back
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: that the Patriots have on one of one currently. This
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: is a James Devlin Yakub Johnson full back with Brock Lampy.
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: And that's a big question when you start doing the
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: roster crunch and the fifty three man projections. Are they
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: going to carry a full Are they not going to carry.
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: A full back?
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: I will I can't imagine Josh McDaniels is gonna not
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: carry a full Like I think that that's just been
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: a staple of his offense for so long that I
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: have to imagine that it's going to still be at
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: least in his back pocket, Like maybe that won't be
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: the base offense anymore.
- 1:01:17Speaker 6: Right now, he has a different kind of quarterback.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: But when the Patriots weren't going well, it was I
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: formation James Devlin in front of a running back and
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: just we're coming at you.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: You know that when you just needed a spark, you
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: just run him out of the backfield and he catches
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: a ten yard pass and I'll you know, all of
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: a sudden, the defense you know, breaks their back yeah.
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: Yeah, or they go I and then they break it
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: out and then all of a sudden he's out wide,
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: and it's do we match him, you know with a linebacker?
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: Do we put a corner on him? You know, what
- 1:01:43Speaker 6: are we doing?
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: And the question is are those rare occurrences enough to
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: have a roster spot right?
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: And and do you carry three tight end slash full
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: backs Henry Hooper Lampy or do you is he like
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: really the fourth guy? And then you're carrying like a
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: developmental player like you know, one of the UF or
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: Jaheem Bell as your third ye you know, Jack Westover
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: has had some run here in these practices. I'm a
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: CG dopre guy who's one of the UDA phase that
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: they signed. So it's a that's a big part of
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: when you're doing the roster projections, getting it down to
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: fifty three, that's a big spot. There are we carrying
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: three tight ends or you're carrying four tight ends, or
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: you're carrying a fullback or you're not carrying a fullback,
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: and those are going to be the things that are
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: going to decide a lot of this.
- 1:02:25Speaker 7: They got him catching passes right now, so I mean
- 1:02:29Speaker 7: it goes back to the coaching staff getting to know
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: these guys, and we don't truly know what they love.
- 1:02:33Speaker 7: I mean, I think personally like you can see that
- 1:02:37Speaker 7: he likes intense dudes who were really into it.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: But style of play, toughness.
- 1:02:42Speaker 7: You know where you splitting the difference on those lower
- 1:02:44Speaker 7: ranking receivers, tight ends, defensive backs, even you just you
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: don't know what they're going to come up with it.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: Right when you start talking about, you know, at large
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: roster spots, just large roster spots regardless of position, that
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: are up for grabs. If Lampi's on the team, and
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: that's taking us spot away from somebody else, maybe that's
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: taking a spot from a sixth receiver or taking a
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: spot away from another defensive lineman or offensive lineman.
- 1:03:08Speaker 6: So those are the tough roster.
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: Decisions that you have to make, and there are some
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: flexibility with the practice squad now, like he could start
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: on the practice squad and elevate him for games and
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: things of that nature. But when we get out here
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: we still hear regular regulars sometimes and like, you know,
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: the fullback's going on the field, like you know, that's
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: just I can't imagine that that package is just going
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: to be completely wiped out of Josh mcdaniels's arsenal.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Good point talking about tight ends. Who's your blocking tight
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: end going into the or do you have one?
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think on this stage you're probably
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: a little bit leaning more towards the third tackle, like
- 1:03:45Speaker 7: a Caiden Wallace perhaps, But it's a good point.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: We always talk about it.
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: Is there a spot for a guy who's just a
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: pure dirt blocker get in there? Why tight end just
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: ready to ready to do the tough work that needs
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: to be done in the running game.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: I'm not sure.
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: I think in a perfect world you have a guy
- 1:04:01Speaker 7: who can do both, like Gronk, But right now they've
- 1:04:03Speaker 7: been doing it by committee.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: Yeah, if only we could just get Gronk, you know,
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: the prime just picking up how many of That's got
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: to be another one out there? So see you do
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: preeze that guy out of Alabama, he's a blocking tight end.
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: Two fifty five to six it is. You know that
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: he's a he's a house.
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: You look at him, and that was our first impression
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: at rookie Mini Camp. I was like, that's a big dude.
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: That's a tight end. Like you know, that's a blocking
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: tight end. Hooper is a plus blocker. I give Hunter
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: Henry a ton of credit. He's really worked hard on
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: his blocking since the Patriots signed him, and he's become
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: a much more serviceable inline blocker. But if I had
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: to guess if they were going to keep like a
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: pure blocking tight end as the third tight end, you
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: know for goal line and short yardage and that kind
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: of thing, then the body type is dupree You know
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: he he's got that tool, he's got that ability. That's
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: how he was used at Alabama. So we'll see if
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: you can make a push. His time of year is coming.
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: This is not his time of year. The the shorts
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: and T shirts is not going to be where seed
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: you do free shines. You need the pads to see
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: what he's gonna do all right.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Well, listen, it's getting to time where we have to
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: shut off our cameras, so we're gonna end the show,
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: but I want to thank everyone for watching. Practice will
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: continue and we'll continue watching practice. What we're gonna do
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: is we're gonna go into the studio at two point thirty.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: We'll wrap up everything we see. So thanks for watching.
