- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:17good news at work in a way that
- 0:19actually makes sense.
- 0:25I want to start by asking you to
- 0:26think of something you are an evangelist about
- 0:29other than Jesus or Christianity.
- 0:31Is there something where people who know you
- 0:33just kind of know that you want them
- 0:35to get in on this thing, whatever it
- 0:37is?
- 0:37For me, it is the project management tool
- 0:40Asana.
- 0:41I am an Asana evangelist.
- 0:43I literally just emailed my boss's boss today
- 0:46talking about project management and including a link
- 0:49from Asana's website to try and clarify, like,
- 0:51hey, here's some ways we could do some
- 0:53asynchronous communication that would be more efficient for
- 0:56the way we're managing these projects.
- 0:58I love Asana.
- 0:59And what do I do?
- 1:00When people ask me about Asana, I talk
- 1:02about what difference Asana has made in my
- 1:05own life.
- 1:06I'm like, I used to manage projects in
- 1:09Google Docs with, like, checklists.
- 1:10And then I used Trello.
- 1:12But then when I found Asana, it was
- 1:13like, it was a new day for project
- 1:16management.
- 1:17I was able to keep track of due
- 1:18dates for myself way better.
- 1:20I could show logical connections between tasks that
- 1:23needed to be done.
- 1:24It's just so clear, and I can go
- 1:27on and on because of my personal experience.
- 1:30So as we're talking about having conversations with
- 1:33our friends about spiritual life, one of the
- 1:35most powerful things we can do is share
- 1:37our own experience with Jesus, to share our
- 1:40own story.
- 1:41And this is something I've kind of mentioned
- 1:42off to the side a couple of times
- 1:44in previous episodes.
- 1:45So I wanted to just take a full
- 1:46episode and look at how can we share
- 1:48our story?
- 1:50Now, we've got paradigms for this in the
- 1:52Bible itself.
- 1:53So in the ministry of Jesus, you might
- 1:55remember this story of this man who was
- 1:56oppressed by demons.
- 1:58He was very violent.
- 2:00He lived among the tombs in a region
- 2:02called the Gerasenes.
- 2:03The very ending of that story is really
- 2:05poignant.
- 2:06This is Mark, chapter five, starting in verse
- 2:0818.
- 2:10As Jesus was getting into the boat, the
- 2:13man who had been possessed with demons begged
- 2:14him that he might be with him.
- 2:17And Jesus did not permit him, but said
- 2:19to him, go home to your friends and
- 2:22tell them how much the Lord has done
- 2:24for you and how he has had mercy
- 2:26on you.
- 2:28And he went away and began to proclaim
- 2:30in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done
- 2:32for him and everyone marveled.
- 2:36Now this is striking for a lot of
- 2:38reasons.
- 2:39One is that this man wants to be
- 2:42with Jesus.
- 2:42This is a really strong intuition, but Jesus
- 2:45actually commissions him to do something different.
- 2:47He's like, I don't want you to come
- 2:48travel with me and my other disciples.
- 2:50I want you to go back to your
- 2:52home and minister there.
- 2:55So there's kind of a paradigm here for
- 2:56us.
- 2:56Some of us might think that we have
- 2:57some big, exciting thing we need to do
- 2:59for the Lord because we love Jesus.
- 3:02But Jesus actually sends us maybe somewhere else,
- 3:04somewhere unexpected.
- 3:05Maybe he sends us quote unquote back home
- 3:07to talk to our friends.
- 3:09And that's something that I think is really
- 3:11important for you to not think that you're
- 3:13missing out on the kingdom of God, just
- 3:15because a certain ministry opportunity didn't come together
- 3:17for you.
- 3:18Right now in your workplace, whatever your job
- 3:21is, you are being sent there and you
- 3:23can talk to your friends there about the
- 3:26things of God.
- 3:28What's also really striking is the fact that
- 3:29Jesus tells him to tell the story because
- 3:31usually after other encounters like this in the
- 3:34gospels, Jesus tells people not to tell other
- 3:36people.
- 3:37This is part of what's called the Messianic
- 3:39secret.
- 3:40Jesus wanted to keep things a little bit
- 3:41under wraps for a while for various reasons,
- 3:43so he was trying to get people to
- 3:45not talk more about him for a while.
- 3:47But this time he's just like, no, this
- 3:49guy needs to share like this guy has
- 3:50been through an experience and it's so like
- 3:52he needs to share.
- 3:53And so he tells him, go home to
- 3:56your friends and tell them how much the
- 3:59Lord has done for you and how he
- 4:01has had mercy on you.
- 4:03So this is not a commandment for everybody,
- 4:06but it's a paradigm that we can step
- 4:07inside of.
- 4:08We too have experienced things that God has
- 4:11done for us.
- 4:12We too have experienced God's mercy for us.
- 4:15And we too can tell that story to
- 4:17others.
- 4:19Now, this brings up the question of the
- 4:21evangelical subculture and the idea of sharing your
- 4:24testimony.
- 4:25So this isn't part of your experience.
- 4:27This might be a little bit of inside
- 4:28baseball for you, but for a lot of
- 4:30Christians who grew up in the evangelical movement
- 4:31or who were part of it at some
- 4:33point in their lives, there was this practice
- 4:35of sharing your testimony and the genre of
- 4:38testimony goes like this.
- 4:39I had a terrible life doing sex, drugs,
- 4:42and rock and roll.
- 4:43And then I found Jesus and now things
- 4:44are great.
- 4:45Uh, and it can be difficult to fit
- 4:48your own life into that genre.
- 4:50If that's not your story, like that's not
- 4:52my story.
- 4:53I knew Jesus from a very young age,
- 4:55had a very authentic coming to faith when
- 4:57I was quite young, did not do sex,
- 4:58drugs, and rock and roll before that experience.
- 5:01And, uh, the Lord still met me in
- 5:03a, in a very genuine way.
- 5:05So, uh, I actually had a friend, uh,
- 5:07Katrina who asked me this question once.
- 5:09She's like, I've always known Jesus.
- 5:11How am I supposed to share my testimony?
- 5:14And the way that I think about this
- 5:16kind of is paralleled by the Marvel cinematic
- 5:18universe.
- 5:19So if you remember way back when, when
- 5:21the MCU movies were first coming out, it
- 5:24was a really straightforward genre.
- 5:26The first ones you didn't even realize were
- 5:28connected to each other, right?
- 5:29Like there was an incredible Hulk movie and
- 5:31it was just like, Oh, that's, that's an
- 5:32incredible Hulk movie.
- 5:33There it is now the movie's over and
- 5:35there was a Captain America movie.
- 5:36And it's like, okay, same thing.
- 5:38There's an Iron Man movie and they're not
- 5:39really connected.
- 5:40And so it's like a genre that people
- 5:41are familiar with, but then they had the
- 5:45Avengers and like all of them came together
- 5:46into a single movie and it's like, wow,
- 5:49it's all, it's all together.
- 5:50Wow.
- 5:50This is a new genre.
- 5:51Uh, but then once that was established, people
- 5:54actually went with it.
- 5:55They could handle all sorts of genre things
- 5:57after that.
- 5:58Things could be told out of order.
- 6:00So like the Captain Marvel, that one set
- 6:02way earlier than most of the other ones.
- 6:04And yet people were okay with that.
- 6:05They're like, Oh, different point in the timeline.
- 6:07Totally fine.
- 6:07We can handle it.
- 6:08Then like Spider-Man, they just skipped his
- 6:10origin story entirely.
- 6:11They're like, that's been done too many times.
- 6:12We're just going to start with him already
- 6:13having his powers as a high school student,
- 6:15brilliant move.
- 6:17Uh, and so audiences can keep up with
- 6:19more than just the simple genre.
- 6:20This is what we've learned from the MCU.
- 6:22Now there's like multiple universes.
- 6:23People can handle all sorts of things.
- 6:25Okay.
- 6:25It's the same thing for a testimony.
- 6:28Your testimony does not have to fit a
- 6:31boilerplate genre to be a story of what
- 6:34God has done for you.
- 6:35Right.
- 6:36You just need to have the, the ingredients
- 6:38of the story.
- 6:40So just like a, like a superhero movie,
- 6:41what are the key ingredients, you got to
- 6:43have a superhero.
- 6:44You got to have some sort of villain,
- 6:45usually a super villain.
- 6:46You've got to have some fun action sequences
- 6:49and some explosions.
- 6:50And in the MCU, you got to have
- 6:51some like quirky jokes along the way somehow.
- 6:53And like all of those things are there,
- 6:55even though the genre is mixed up.
- 6:57So it's not so much does my story
- 7:00fit this specific timeline.
- 7:01That's not the point.
- 7:02The point is, does my story have these
- 7:03ingredients?
- 7:04And I would say the ingredients of a
- 7:06good news story are your experience with sin
- 7:09and the consequences of sin.
- 7:12The difference that Jesus is making in your
- 7:14life now, what it means for you to
- 7:17place your faith in Jesus and what changes
- 7:21have come in your life because of him.
- 7:24So there's kind of these four key ingredients,
- 7:27sin and its consequences, Jesus, faith, and change
- 7:31or changes.
- 7:33And these can come in different orders for
- 7:35different people.
- 7:36And they come over and over again in
- 7:37our lives.
- 7:38When you read the Bible, it's not like
- 7:40God just does one thing in somebody's life
- 7:41and then it's perfect forever.
- 7:43Like in that sense, the most simplistic version
- 7:46of the evangelical testimony story where it's like,
- 7:48my life is now free of problems is
- 7:50not even biblical.
- 7:52But what the Bible does have is stories
- 7:54and stories and stories, sometimes in the same
- 7:56person's life, God keeps working in our lives
- 7:58over and over and over again, we keep
- 8:00understanding who he is and his love more
- 8:02and more deeply over time.
- 8:05And so you can just share what I
- 8:06call a present tense testimony.
- 8:08It doesn't have to be the story of
- 8:09how you came to faith, but it's a
- 8:11story of how these ingredients have come together
- 8:13in your life in some way, sin, Jesus,
- 8:18faith, and changes.
- 8:20This is something that I discovered when I
- 8:21was doing student ministry with college students at
- 8:24the University of Illinois at Chicago, I realized
- 8:26a lot of these students did not have
- 8:28the same kind of experience that I did
- 8:30when I was younger, like my story of
- 8:31like how I came to faith would not
- 8:33connect with them, it just wasn't part of
- 8:34their world.
- 8:35But I realized I had a significant experience
- 8:38of anxiety and depression.
- 8:40And so did my wife Katie.
- 8:42And as I shared about how we were
- 8:45meeting Jesus in the midst of facing that
- 8:47mental health difficulty that resonated with students a
- 8:49lot, cause a lot of them had experience
- 8:51with anxiety and depression too.
- 8:53So the way that I kind of packaged
- 8:55it was, okay, right now we're going through
- 8:59this fill in the blank, this kind of
- 9:01sin or difficulty, but in the middle of
- 9:03it, we're also experiencing fill in the blank,
- 9:05good things from Jesus, the presence of Jesus
- 9:07in our lives.
- 9:09And as I fill in the blank, place
- 9:12my faith in Jesus.
- 9:13What does it look like to place my
- 9:14faith in Jesus?
- 9:15I'm grateful for fill in the blank, the
- 9:17changes he's making in my life.
- 9:19So to kind of put that all together
- 9:21right now, we're going through this difficulty with
- 9:24mental health challenges, anxiety and depression.
- 9:27Katie's been facing that I've been facing that,
- 9:29but in the middle of that, I have
- 9:30experienced the love of God in the church,
- 9:32the Christian community, people have brought meals for
- 9:35us.
- 9:35People have talked to us.
- 9:37We found great counselors that have been recommended
- 9:39to us by Christians that we trust.
- 9:42And as I receive that love, I feel
- 9:45like I'm also trusting in Jesus, that I'm
- 9:48trusting that his love for me is real.
- 9:50That's part of what it means for me
- 9:51to put my faith in him.
- 9:53And I feel like even though the anxiety
- 9:55doesn't magically go away, I'm feeling the presence
- 9:59of God in the middle of it.
- 10:01And that's a change in my life.
- 10:04So that's, that's a testimony.
- 10:06I am telling people what God has done
- 10:08for me and how he has had mercy
- 10:10on me.
- 10:11And that's something that you can do too.
- 10:13So in the, this is one of those
- 10:15podcast episodes for which the attached resource that
- 10:17we make available on our website might be
- 10:18really helpful.
- 10:19It'll kind of have that like fill in
- 10:20the blank map that you can use if
- 10:22you would like to.
- 10:23Um, there's also a blog post about this
- 10:25that we can link to, um, that I
- 10:27wrote.
- 10:27It's actually really funny cause my friend Katrina
- 10:29asked me this question because I was soliciting
- 10:31questions for the blog.
- 10:33And now that blog post, like we've been
- 10:34blogging for like more than five years is
- 10:37like the most read blog post by a
- 10:39long shot, like way more than number two.
- 10:41And I think it's because a lot of
- 10:42Christians type this question into Google or other
- 10:44search engines.
- 10:45Like I'm already Christian.
- 10:46How do I share my testimony?
- 10:47And because like the blog titles are similar
- 10:49to that, it's like it's high on the
- 10:50results page.
- 10:51So I don't know if they actually liked
- 10:52liked it that much, but they at least
- 10:54clicked the title to read it.
- 10:55So you can too, if you would like
- 10:56to anyways, extra resources on this episode.
- 11:00But the point is just like Jesus commissioned
- 11:03this man who had been delivered from demonic
- 11:05oppression to share with his friends, we can
- 11:09share whatever Jesus has genuinely done in our
- 11:12lives with our friends.
- 11:13It doesn't have to fit a specific genre.
- 11:15We can share the genuine ingredients of life
- 11:17change that we've experienced in the ways that
- 11:20we really have, and that will be a
- 11:22testimony to our friends that will show them
- 11:24what the kingdom of God is like Lord
- 11:29Jesus.
- 11:29Thank you for being patient with us, for
- 11:31working in our lives again and again and
- 11:33again, as we need to keep learning your
- 11:35way and unlearning the ways that we fall
- 11:38into because of sin and its consequences help
- 11:41us to pay attention to the story you're
- 11:43telling in our life and the, and the
- 11:45stories that you're telling in our life in
- 11:46different ways and give us wisdom on when
- 11:49you're asking us to go and tell our
- 11:51friends, those stories, do your work in us
- 11:54as we do our work with you.
- 12:00Thanks for listening.
