- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness, Happy Monday New Week.
- 0:06I hope y'all had such a special time yesterday celebrating our
- 0:10risen Savior on Easter Sunday and just remembering that Jesus
- 0:16is alive and that we have full victory in him.
- 0:20I pray that that truth is still sitting fresh on your heart and
- 0:24continues to as we step into this new week.
- 0:28Today we are going to be circling back to first John, and
- 0:32I'm going to read from first John chapter 2 through verses 15
- 0:36to 17. Don't set the affections of your
- 0:41heart on this world or in loving the things of the world.
- 0:45The love of the Father and the love of the world are
- 0:48incompatible. For all that the world can offer
- 0:52us the gratification of our flesh, the allurement of the
- 0:56things of the world, and the obsession with status and
- 1:00importance, none of these things come from the Father, but from
- 1:04the world. This world and its desires are
- 1:08in the process of passing away, but those who love to do the
- 1:13will of God live forever. OK, I want to start here because
- 1:19I think this passage can sometimes be misunderstood or
- 1:24taken out of context. This is not saying to hate
- 1:28people or reject God's creation because what God creates is
- 1:34good. He is good.
- 1:36But what John is warning us here is about this system of the
- 1:40world, its values, priorities, the things that are celebrated
- 1:45that are actually rooted in sin and influenced by the one of the
- 1:50world, the enemy. And we have to remember,
- 1:54Scripture tells us greater is he who is in us than he who is in
- 1:59the world. So the Spirit of God that is
- 2:02living within you, if you are a believer, has already overcome
- 2:06the enemy. So we're not called to fear it,
- 2:10but we are called to be aware. I think these verses also
- 2:15connect so well with Romans 12/2, which commands us.
- 2:19Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
- 2:23renewing of your mind. Your worldliness is not just
- 2:28external, it's actually internal.
- 2:31That's where it starts. It's not just about who you're
- 2:35around, where you go, or what your daily life looks like.
- 2:39Of course, those things matter and are important, but it begins
- 2:44in your heart and that's what then shows up on the outside.
- 2:49So the way that you spend your time, your resources, your
- 2:53money, your energy, the relationships and friendships
- 2:57that you invest in those things reveal what you truly value.
- 3:02They show where your priorities line up, and this is so
- 3:07important. You can avoid worldly things on
- 3:11the outside while still holding on to them in your heart, while
- 3:16still entertaining them. You can look like a good
- 3:19Christian, check all the boxes, do all the right things and
- 3:24still be far from God, still not really know him deeply or
- 3:28personally. Scripture talks about how there
- 3:32will be people who say, Lord, didn't we do all these things in
- 3:36your name? And he will respond, depart from
- 3:40me. I never knew you.
- 3:42That is so, so sobering to think about.
- 3:46But I think that we need to sit with the question, what matters
- 3:50most to you? Is it appearing holy, or is it
- 3:55actually truly being holy? Because then John breaks this
- 4:00down even more and he shows us three specific areas where the
- 4:05world can pull us in. What's crazy is looking at these
- 4:10three things, we see the same strategies of the enemy all the
- 4:15way back to the Garden of Eden with Eve, and then again with
- 4:19Jesus being tempted in the wilderness in Matthew 4.
- 4:23Guys, the enemy has not changed his tactics.
- 4:27In the first is the lust of the flesh.
- 4:31This is a preoccupation with satisfying your physical
- 4:35desires, things like sexual immorality or idolatry.
- 4:41When I say preoccupation, this implies that it becomes so
- 4:46important that it starts pushing everything else out.
- 4:50It becomes your greatest desire above God.
- 4:55And yes, these desires can be natural and God has created
- 5:01them, but they are meant to be under His design, and they're
- 5:05also never meant to replace our desire for Him.
- 5:09Secondly, the lust of the eyes. This is an attraction to things
- 5:14like materialism, appearance, and constantly wanting more.
- 5:20You're accumulating, comparing, constantly chasing what looks
- 5:25good. But Scripture reminds us that we
- 5:29are to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth, where
- 5:33moths can destroy and thieves can rob.
- 5:36Because everything here, it fades, it vanishes.
- 5:42Our life is a mist, it's a vapor.
- 5:45It is so quick in the grand scheme of things, even our
- 5:49physical appearance. It's really humbling to think
- 5:53about. But time and gravity will win.
- 5:56Trends regarding style and fashion, Those change.
- 6:01Nothing here is stable or lasting.
- 6:05And thirdly is the pride of life.
- 6:08This is an obsession with status and importance.
- 6:11So your name, what your title or job is, your success, your
- 6:17circle or group, All three of these, ultimately, they divide
- 6:23your heart. They dilute your love for God
- 6:26because they compete and split your affection between him and
- 6:31the world. And God does not share.
- 6:36God is holy. Our Father is completely set
- 6:40apart. He is not looking for partial
- 6:43devotion. He doesn't just want good
- 6:45enough, He wants your whole heart.
- 6:48There is no room for 1/2 in half out mindset.
- 6:53We are called to be in the world but not of the world.
- 6:57To love people, to be around others like Jesus was but not to
- 7:03compromise to the world standards.
- 7:06And at the end of the day I believe it comes down to this.
- 7:12You either love God and hate sin or you choose sin over God.
- 7:19That is a wake up call. I was having a conversation with
- 7:23a friend the other day and she wrote down something that I
- 7:26actually asked if I could take a picture of 'cause it was so so
- 7:30cool to see written out and it really stuck with me.
- 7:33It said do not entertain serpent strategies.
- 7:37God has already told you that you have a royal inheritance, so
- 7:42y'all do not entertain them. I was asking myself as I've been
- 7:48sitting with it, am I entertaining anything?
- 7:52Am I giving space to any thoughts, desires, or even
- 7:57compromises that are pulling my heart away from God?
- 8:02Because the enemy is subtle. He's been using the same things
- 8:07since the very beginning. So practically, what do we do
- 8:12then? Well, obviously we turn to
- 8:15scripture for the direction and Colossians 3 verse 2 tells us to
- 8:22set our minds on things above, not on earthly things.
- 8:26And we look to the fruit of the Spirit.
- 8:30We have self-control through the Holy Spirit.
- 8:33So we ask God for more. And first, Peter 55, it tells us
- 8:38to clothe ourselves in humility. So these things are a daily
- 8:44posture of the heart. Something that I really felt
- 8:48like the Lord literally wrote down on my notes this morning
- 8:52was you cannot fully enjoy the fullness of God's blessings with
- 8:57a distracted or divided heart. It's like being in one place but
- 9:04wishing that you were somewhere else.
- 9:06You miss what is right in front of you and when this passage is
- 9:11talking about doing the will of God.
- 9:13As we've seen in the last verse, it's not just saying a one time
- 9:17decision. This word in the Greek implies
- 9:21that it is a habitual, continuous lifestyle and
- 9:26decision. So it's not just when it's
- 9:29convenient for you, not just when it aligns with what you
- 9:33want, but choosing His will every single day, denying
- 9:37yourself, taking up your cross and following Jesus and
- 9:42believing and trusting that His way is always, always better.
- 9:50Remembering that this world is constantly passing away.
- 9:54The clock is ticking. Everything that people chase,
- 9:58everything that seems so important right now, it will not
- 10:02last. But the one who does the will of
- 10:06God, it says who loves to do the will of God, that person lives
- 10:12into eternity. So with that, I'm going to go
- 10:15ahead and close this out in prayer.
- 10:19Heavenly Father, we thank you today for your word.
- 10:25Thank you for the way that it sharpens us through the truth.
- 10:30I ask that you would just search our hearts, God, and would you
- 10:35reveal anything in us that is divided or distracted?
- 10:41Would You help us to love you fully, not just from the
- 10:45outside, but from within Internally?
- 10:49I pray for discernment that we would recognize the enemy's
- 10:53tactics and that You would give us strength by Your Spirit to
- 10:57resist them. Teach us to set our minds on
- 11:02things above, and may we be sensitive to Your Spirit to walk
- 11:07in obedience to Your will every single day, not just when we
- 11:11want to. But Lord, may we just deny
- 11:15ourselves every day and choose even when it's hard.
- 11:21May we love to do Your will. God, we trust that Your way is
- 11:25always better and we give you our hearts to You completely.
- 11:30We pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 11:34OK guys, well that's today's episode.
- 11:37I hope you all have a great rest of your Monday.
- 11:39I'm really looking forward to the rest of the things that the
- 11:42Lord is going to continue teaching us, and I will see
- 11:45y'all on the next episode.
