2:49
Speaker 3: You had to get some think, get through some things

2:51
Speaker 5: You're taking care of business. Do you know what today is?

Speaker 5: March eighteenth, National Awkward Moment's.

3:09
Speaker 3: little trial run today.
3:11
Speaker 5: It's good. We have a lot to talk about.
3:12
Speaker 3: Too, a lot to talk about, and this guy is
3:14
Speaker 3: a big part of it.
3:15
Speaker 7: Yes, the Attorney General of the State of West Virginia, JB. McCuskey,
3:18
Speaker 7: is here this morning. Thank you so much for being here.
3:20
Speaker 8: Appreciate it, Amanda, Thanks so much for having me And
3:23
Speaker 8: National Awkward Moments Day might be the worst day of
3:25
Speaker 8: the year for every press person in America as their
3:29
Speaker 8: politician bosses wander around the world and generally.
3:33
Speaker 3: Create awkward moments for them. So let's hope we can
3:35
Speaker 3: avoid that.
3:36
Speaker 5: Let's do We will do that for sure, all right, JB.
3:38
Speaker 7: Obviously a very busy day, West Virginia got snubbed from
3:42
Speaker 7: the March Madness Tournament. North Carolina was the last team
3:45
Speaker 7: in West Virginia. The first team out, North Carolina plays
3:49
Speaker 7: tonight at nine o'clock. Will you be filing an injunction
3:53
Speaker 7: as we move into this tournament?
3:55
Speaker 8: No, this isn't about sour grapes. This isn't about getting
4:00
Speaker 8: WVU into the tournament this year WVU made the tournament
4:03
Speaker 8: this year. The committee decided that they shouldn't be allowed
4:06
Speaker 8: to play, But WVU made the tournament this year. And
4:10
Speaker 8: what we're looking for is a level of certainty in
4:14
Speaker 8: the selection process that ensures that in three hundred and
4:17
Speaker 8: sixty three days, we're not having this same conversation again.
4:20
Speaker 8: The NCAA Tournament is a billion dollar business that is
4:25
Speaker 8: being decided by a good old boy network in a
4:30
Speaker 8: smoke filled room somewhere instead of in what we believe
4:33
Speaker 8: in a way that is data driven, predictable, and gives
4:37
Speaker 8: our athletic directors and our student athletes and our coaches
4:40
Speaker 8: the kind of certainty they need that how do we
4:43
Speaker 8: set up our roster, how do we set up our schedule,
4:45
Speaker 8: how do we manage our nil how do we do
4:48
Speaker 8: all the things we need to do to get in
4:49
Speaker 8: the tournament? Because it's binary right. We live in a
4:52
Speaker 8: world where if you make the tournament, you had a
4:53
Speaker 8: good year, and if you don't make the tournament, you
4:55
Speaker 8: had a bad year. And it is silly in my
4:59
Speaker 8: mind to have interested parties sitting in a room eating
5:02
Speaker 8: ice cream making decisions about who those sixty eight teams
5:05
Speaker 8: should be. When we know it's twenty twenty five, and
5:08
Speaker 8: we have advanced metrics, and we have advanced statistics, and
5:11
Speaker 8: we have the ability to actually prove who are the
5:15
Speaker 8: best sixty eight teams. And if the NCAA wants the
5:17
Speaker 8: best sixty eight teams, what they're doing is not the
5:20
Speaker 8: right way to do it. Maybe that isn't what the
5:22
Speaker 8: NCAA wants, right, it's not impossible that the NCAA doesn't
5:26
Speaker 8: have a mission of having the best sixty eight teams
5:28
Speaker 8: in the tournament. And if that's true, then their system
5:30
Speaker 8: is fine. But I don't think that's the case. I
5:32
Speaker 8: don't think that's what the fans want. I don't think
5:34
Speaker 8: that's what the fans expect, and I don't think that's
5:36
Speaker 8: what the athletic directors, coaches and student athletes all throughout
5:40
Speaker 8: this country thought was going to be the process.
5:42
Speaker 3: Because what we know is.
5:43
Speaker 8: Last year and the year before that and the year
5:45
Speaker 8: before that, the NCAA has said, we're looking at quad
5:48
Speaker 8: one wins, we're looking at quad four losses. We're looking
5:51
Speaker 8: at kenpomp, we're looking at strength to schedule, we're looking
5:53
Speaker 8: at all of the metrics that put w in the tournament,
5:56
Speaker 8: and then this year they said, well, you did everything
5:59
Speaker 8: you're supposed to do, but your best player got hurt
6:01
Speaker 8: five months ago, and you had four quad one wins
6:04
Speaker 8: after he got hurt, and you went ten and ten
6:06
Speaker 8: in your league. And the part that nobody's talking about,
6:08
Speaker 8: one of the more frustrating parts of this for me,
6:10
Speaker 8: is yes, North Carolina did not deserve to be in
6:13
Speaker 8: the tournament, not based on objective metrics. But Oklahoma and
6:18
Speaker 8: Texas went six and ten in their league six and ten.
6:23
Speaker 8: There are teams who were four games under five hundred
6:26
Speaker 8: in their own league play in this tournament. Six and
6:29
Speaker 8: ten doesn't get you in the playoffs. In girls Church
6:31
Speaker 8: League basketball in Charleston, West Virginia. And I know because
6:35
Speaker 8: my team, the Saint Matthew's Porcupines that my ten year
6:38
Speaker 8: old daughter plays on, won the Church League championship this
6:41
Speaker 8: year and by every objective metric, we're the best team
6:44
Speaker 8: in the league.
6:44
Speaker 7: So West Virginia Attorney General J. B. McCuskey is here.
6:47
Speaker 7: You send a letter to the NCAA yesterday. Have you
6:50
Speaker 7: heard back from them yet?
6:51
Speaker 3: We have not yet. We're very hopeful that we will.
6:54
Speaker 8: You know, this is about fixing the process and it's
6:57
Speaker 8: about the nc DOUBLEA explaining why they chose the way
7:01
Speaker 8: they chose this year in complete contravention to the way
7:04
Speaker 8: they've done it in years past. And I think the
7:06
Speaker 8: problem that the NCAA has is that, you know, I've
7:09
Speaker 8: been the auditor for the last eight years before I
7:11
Speaker 8: became the Attorney General, and I managed literally thousands of
7:14
Speaker 8: fraud complaints right people calling in and saying they're stealing
7:18
Speaker 8: in the city of you know whatever, and they're stealing
7:20
Speaker 8: at the whatever fire department, or they're stealing from me
7:23
Speaker 8: at the whatever thing. Those come in a lot, and
7:26
Speaker 8: our job was to find the difference between incompetence and fraud,
7:31
Speaker 8: and unfortunately they present the same way at first glance.
7:35
Speaker 8: And even more unfortunately, the mere appearance of impropriety right
7:39
Speaker 8: and incompetence can look like impropriety erode the confidence that
7:45
Speaker 8: everyone has in all the systems. And so it was
7:47
Speaker 8: our job to both find the difference between those two things,
7:50
Speaker 8: fix the systems that were incompetent, and prosecute the people
7:54
Speaker 8: that were fraudulent. In this instance, I don't know if
7:57
Speaker 8: it's fraud or incompetence. My gut tells me it's probably incompetence.
8:00
Speaker 3: Go ahead, I was.
8:01
Speaker 7: Gonna say, just to back up for a second here,
8:04
Speaker 7: Bubba Cunningham is North Carolina's athletic director. He is the
8:07
Speaker 7: chair of this election committee for the NCAA March Madness Tournament.
8:12
Speaker 7: So you're suggesting, and he says he wasn't in the
8:15
Speaker 7: room when the decision was made to put North Carolina.
8:18
Speaker 8: And as the last one look out of this room,
8:19
Speaker 8: and then he and I are going to decide whether
8:22
Speaker 8: you get a one hundred thousand.
8:22
Speaker 3: Dollars or not.
8:23
Speaker 5: Well, I hope you make the right decision.
8:25
Speaker 8: I'm serious, though, I mean, think about the insanity or
8:27
Speaker 8: that now. It's like, well, I walked outside for thirty seconds.
8:29
Speaker 8: It's not like you guys aren't already friends. It's not
8:32
Speaker 8: like your colleagues. It's not like and here's the other
8:34
Speaker 8: part of the system that's broken.
8:36
Speaker 3: Every one of.
8:37
Speaker 8: The ads in that room had the same incentive that
8:39
Speaker 8: is part of an AD's contract, which means he didn't
8:42
Speaker 8: even have to say to the other guys, hey, I
8:44
Speaker 8: get one hundred thousand dollars if you put North Carolina in.
8:47
Speaker 5: They already knew, right, you expect to hear from him
8:50
Speaker 5: at all.
8:51
Speaker 8: I would love to talk to him. I would love
8:53
Speaker 8: to sit down and talk to him, ask him what happened.
8:55
Speaker 8: But I'd also like to say, Hey, I'd like to
8:58
Speaker 8: bring Javon Small to your office, and I'd like for
9:00
Speaker 8: you to look this young man in the eye and
9:03
Speaker 8: tell him why he isn't playing in the NCAA tournament
9:05
Speaker 8: after he carried a team on his back, after going
9:08
Speaker 8: through three different schools, becoming a first team All American right,
9:13
Speaker 8: and he did everything the right way.
9:15
Speaker 3: He's a best person ever. He makes great grades.
9:18
Speaker 8: He's an incredible leader, and he moved and he came
9:21
Speaker 8: to Ust Virginia, bought into our program, bought into this state,
9:23
Speaker 8: bought into our culture and drug our team with the
9:27
Speaker 8: help of so many other great players, but he was
9:28
Speaker 8: really the leader. Nope, your college career is over because
9:33
Speaker 8: I think Tucker Devrees being hurt in November completely discredits
9:37
Speaker 8: every single thing that you've done the entire year, and that.
9:41
Speaker 3: Doesn't make sense. Nine to seventeen Talking to Attorney General
9:44
Speaker 3: Jimmy mccusky to Dave Island chilling five Any Live brought
9:47
Speaker 3: to you apartment snap Fitness snap as a wide selection
9:49
Speaker 3: of equipment including free weights, cardio machine weights, and more.

9:56
Speaker 3: Visit snapfitness dot com from more details. Jamie, you know,
9:59
Speaker 3: I guess and I said it on the show yesterday WVU.
10:03
Speaker 3: This was before you're the announcement that you and Governor
10:05
Speaker 3: Morrissey had yesterday WVU. One deserves to be in the
10:08
Speaker 3: NCAA tournament, no question about it. It's a miscarriage of
10:11
Speaker 3: justice in my opinion. But what would you say to
10:14
Speaker 3: those who would say that your office, the governor's office,
10:19
Speaker 3: has a lot bigger issues to worry about.
10:22
Speaker 8: So this is a common theme from the left, and
10:25
Speaker 8: for whatever reason, they don't believe that people can do
10:28
Speaker 8: two things at once. The West Virginia Attorney General's Office
10:31
Speaker 8: is currently leading on five energy briefs. We're leading a
10:36
Speaker 8: multi state lawsuit against the State of New York. We
10:38
Speaker 8: are drafting and pursuing between six and eight large scale
10:44
Speaker 8: anti opioid lawsuits. I have completely had to remake the
10:49
Speaker 8: office and trying to find furniture. You know, I like
10:52
Speaker 8: to think that I'm successful enough to maybe walk in
10:54
Speaker 8: chew gum. At the same time, and I think it's
10:57
Speaker 8: inappropriate for people to say that you can only do
11:00
Speaker 8: these three things because they always choose their three things.
11:03
Speaker 8: And when a miscarriage of justice has happened to a
11:06
Speaker 8: group of young men who carry the flying WV on
11:09
Speaker 8: their chest, I think that's important enough to be part
11:12
Speaker 8: of the conversation of the things that we're doing, especially
11:15
Speaker 8: when you consider the amount of money the state of
11:16
Speaker 8: West Virginia puts into WVU athletics, the amount of time
11:19
Speaker 8: that the people of West Virginia put into watching WVU athletics,
11:23
Speaker 8: the amount of energy and emotion and sadness that the
11:26
Speaker 8: people of West Virginia have felt with WU and Marshall
11:29
Speaker 8: and athletic departments throughout our state. It's important. It's important
11:34
Speaker 8: to a huge portion of our of our population, both
11:37
Speaker 8: financially and emotionally, and we are not incapable of It's
11:41
Speaker 8: not binary. I'm not not doing these other things. But
11:44
Speaker 8: for whatever reason, liberals seem to think that the government
11:48
Speaker 8: can only do one thing at a time. When you
11:50
Speaker 8: know successful people and people with high energy you get
11:52
Speaker 8: up early in the morning and go to bed late
11:54
Speaker 8: at night, they're able to shockingly to accomplish all the
11:58
Speaker 8: parts of their job, and this feels like a part
12:00
Speaker 8: of our job to me.
12:01
Speaker 3: I saw where officials at WU said that they fully
12:04
Speaker 3: supported the efforts and what came out of the press
12:07
Speaker 3: conference yatly were they aware though, that you guys were
12:10
Speaker 3: going to do the press conference ahead of time? Were
12:11
Speaker 3: there any conversations there?
12:12
Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm in touch with Reren a lot. He is
12:16
Speaker 8: a truly wonderful athletic director. Wren understands the people of
12:20
Speaker 8: West Virginia, and he understands from a business standpoint and
12:24
Speaker 8: from a personality standpoint. How do we keep West Virginia
12:27
Speaker 8: at the forefront of athletics. How do we make sure
12:30
Speaker 8: that the incredible traditions that we have on our soccer fields,
12:33
Speaker 8: on our basketball courts, and on our football fields and
12:36
Speaker 8: every other bit of athletics that WU excels at. How
12:39
Speaker 8: do we make sure that we stay at the top
12:40
Speaker 8: of the heat. Because we are a small school, we
12:42
Speaker 8: are a small state, We do have less revenue, but
12:45
Speaker 8: what we have is an incredible history, the best fan
12:47
Speaker 8: base in the country, and Wren is the perfect guy
12:50
Speaker 8: at the perfect moment to be leading this athletic department.
12:53
Speaker 8: And so I like to make sure he knows everything
12:56
Speaker 8: that we're working on because he and I. Number one,
13:00
Speaker 8: we're about the same age, or kids are about the
13:01
Speaker 8: same age. And I think he's doing a great job.
13:04
Speaker 8: And I say, his daughter playing a team called the Porcupines.
13:06
Speaker 8: His daughter lives in Morgantown. But I would love just
13:09
Speaker 8: to have a matchup between the Saint Matthew's Porcupines, whatever
13:12
Speaker 8: team his team plays for. But I communicate with the
13:15
Speaker 8: university and with RN constantly and so that they were
13:17
Speaker 8: well aware of.
13:20
Speaker 3: What we were working on.
13:21
Speaker 8: And you know, it's a relationship that I think is
13:24
Speaker 8: important because they are a huge part of our state government,
13:27
Speaker 8: the Athletic Department at WU. You know, I haven't looked
13:30
Speaker 8: at the statistics, but might be like the fifth or
13:33
Speaker 8: sixth largest business in the state. Right It's a big deal,
13:36
Speaker 8: and our office treats it that way, and we like
13:39
Speaker 8: to make sure that they're well informed of what it
13:41
Speaker 8: is we're working on.
13:43
Speaker 3: Before we let you go. USA Today columnist Dan wolkan
13:46
Speaker 3: out with a column and he called this, you mean,
13:48
Speaker 3: Dan Woken, I kind of saw the irony in there
13:52
Speaker 3: when I saw that, Zach, that actually is irony. Most
13:56
Speaker 3: people confuse irony with with just similarity. That's actual irony.
14:02
Speaker 3: I'm not just eye candy. I actually I know I've
14:05
Speaker 3: heard that Dan Wolkin said. He called it making a
14:10
Speaker 3: mockery of real problems in West Virginia and embarrassing for
14:13
Speaker 3: the people of West Virginia. Where is Dan from? I
14:16
Speaker 3: do not know.
14:17
Speaker 8: If Dan wants to come and grab a hot dog
14:20
Speaker 8: or pepperoni role and a beer with me, I will
14:22
Speaker 8: explain to him why people that aren't from here don't
14:26
Speaker 8: understand us. And I will explain to Dan why writing
14:28
Speaker 8: a two thousand page mindless article once a day is
14:32
Speaker 8: probably the limit of his capacity.
14:35
Speaker 3: While the elected officials.
14:36
Speaker 8: Here in West Virginia utilize twenty four hours in a
14:39
Speaker 8: day and are able to juggle multiple balls at the
14:41
Speaker 8: same time as.
14:42
Speaker 5: You utilize those twenty four hours.
14:44
Speaker 7: Today, what can we expect as far as the NCAA
14:46
Speaker 7: is concerned today?
14:48
Speaker 8: It's hard for me to predict what they're going to do.
14:52
Speaker 8: I know what I would like for them to do,
14:53
Speaker 8: and that is and that is to answer our questions.
14:56
Speaker 8: And I would like for them to modernize their procedure,
14:59
Speaker 8: modernize their appro coach, and really dig down into what
15:02
Speaker 8: are the goals of the NCAA tournament. You know, what
15:04
Speaker 8: are we trying to do? Is it about the NCAA
15:06
Speaker 8: making money? Is it about the best sixty eight teams
15:10
Speaker 8: in the tournament?
15:11
Speaker 3: Is it about? What is it about?
15:12
Speaker 8: Because there's a lot of people who are investing too
15:15
Speaker 8: much time and too much energy and too much money
15:18
Speaker 8: into this process. For it to be this cryptic, this antiquated,
15:22
Speaker 8: and for it to be this unpredictable.
15:24

18:40
Speaker 3: McCuskey came across as the leader in the room, the
18:43
Speaker 3: one in charge. Morrissey came across as a clown. Tex says,
18:46
Speaker 3: I agree with jab these people who complained that these
18:48

18:52
Speaker 3: more than a fable. People can do two things at

19:01

19:04
Speaker 3: time for Pat Morrissey and the West Virginia GOP. They
19:06
Speaker 3: now have something to distract the people from the executive
19:09
Speaker 3: branch and the legislatures in that legislative abilities and misguided policies. People,
19:14
Speaker 3: WVU is not dancing this year. Move on, don't let
19:17
Speaker 3: the wv GOP's lawfare distract from their quality of work
19:22

19:47
Speaker 3: Nicely from West Virginia. Watch good morning, Welcome to the show.
19:51
Speaker 11: Good morning, how are you guys.
19:52
Speaker 3: We're doing fine. Thank you for being here. I was
19:54
Speaker 3: going to have you on the show yesterday. But you
19:56
Speaker 3: were covering the Judiciary Committee. You did send me a
19:59
Speaker 3: text early yesterday morning saying you were hoping to have
20:02
Speaker 3: a day or two devoid of talking about children's things.
20:07
Speaker 3: Were we able to maintain that yesterday? Not children's things?
20:10
Speaker 3: I was trying not to say genitals, but I said
20:11
Speaker 3: genital So go ahead.
20:16
Speaker 11: No, we were well, how do I say this? Not
20:19
Speaker 11: in the legend. It didn't come up in the meeting
20:21
Speaker 11: I covered. But it's still certainly buzzing around the Capitol.
20:25
Speaker 11: But I speak for the press corps this time by saying,
20:28
Speaker 11: we all want to move forward. The bill has already
20:30
Speaker 11: been signed.
20:32
Speaker 3: The end. Well, we hope, we hope, we hope, we
20:36
Speaker 3: certainly hope.
20:36
Speaker 7: It is Milia. Thanks so much for joining us this morning.
20:38
Speaker 7: It's Amanda Baron. Just want to start. Today's the last
20:41
Speaker 7: day to introduce bills.
20:42
Speaker 5: What are you expecting to see today?
20:44
Speaker 11: Well, I will say something I'm watching this morning, and
20:48
Speaker 11: Senate Education is a teacher pay raise bill. That's something
20:52
Speaker 11: that the governor prioritized in his State of the State address,
20:56
Speaker 11: and we haven't really seen that get much traction, So
20:59
Speaker 11: mentors to see that. I don't know that I'm looking
21:03
Speaker 11: for einthing else to be introduced that it hasn't been
21:05
Speaker 11: here so far, but I'll certainly be watching for it.
21:07
Speaker 11: But I think we have a lot of education measures
21:10
Speaker 11: that are really getting off the ground and moving. At
21:12
Speaker 11: this point in session.
21:13
Speaker 7: Certainly education has been at the forefront. And one thing
21:15
Speaker 7: you do such an amazing job covering and giving a
21:17
Speaker 7: voice to the most vulnerable or our foster children, you know,
21:22
Speaker 7: the more than six thousand of them across the state.
21:24
Speaker 7: We saw the hearing a couple of weeks ago with
21:27
Speaker 7: the Department of Human Services Cabinet Secretary Alex Mayer about
21:31
Speaker 7: the study that they wanted to do, and obviously he
21:34
Speaker 7: said that he believes he can take this department, take
21:38
Speaker 7: a look at the things that are going on there,
21:40
Speaker 7: what's working and what's not working, and move forward. Are
21:44
Speaker 7: you surprised by what we are hearing about foster care
21:48
Speaker 7: this session or what we're not hearing about foster care
21:50
Speaker 7: the session?
21:52
Speaker 11: Well, thank you for the kind words. First of all,
21:54
Speaker 11: that's a great question, So I'm going to say yes
21:56
Speaker 11: and no. We do have, especially in the House, we
22:00
Speaker 11: have some foster care bills that address some problems in
22:04
Speaker 11: the system. You know from the outset. They may not
22:06
Speaker 11: look like substantial bills that there are problems that foster parents,
22:09
Speaker 11: guardian had items that help children in court have brought
22:12
Speaker 11: to lawmakers, and they're really trying to work on those issues.
22:15
Speaker 11: But I would say overall, I'm surprised that I just
22:18
Speaker 11: really don't see that fire for fixing foster care at
22:23
Speaker 11: the forefront of the legislature. So I'm seeing it in committees, especially,
22:26
Speaker 11: like I said, in the House, but it really hasn't
22:30
Speaker 11: been a major issue, and it's certainly not from the
22:32
Speaker 11: governor's office right Like we've seen a press conference for
22:35
Speaker 11: the NC double A, or we've seen a press conference
22:37
Speaker 11: for citing the gender definition bill, but we haven't heard
22:40
Speaker 11: much out of his office about foster care this session.
22:43
Speaker 7: Amelia Nicely is with us from West Virginia Watch. You've
22:47
Speaker 7: mentioned that there are some bills relating to foster care
22:51
Speaker 7: and maybe they're just not the splashy bills that are
22:53
Speaker 7: that are making badlines. Can you kind of can you
22:56
Speaker 7: go a little deeper as far as maybe one that
22:59
Speaker 7: you think is making some progress that might help these
23:02
Speaker 7: child Sure.
23:03
Speaker 11: Yeah, absolutely so I want to choose the guardian ed
23:06
Speaker 11: item bills, so guardian od items are appointed attorneys that
23:10
Speaker 11: represent the well being of the child in the court system.
23:13
Speaker 11: So once a child has is involved in an abast
23:16
Speaker 11: and neglect case, they're going to be in the judicial
23:19
Speaker 11: system as well. Right, the courts can then determine if
23:22
Speaker 11: their parents are fit to get them back, or if
23:24
Speaker 11: they need to go to an out of state placement
23:26
Speaker 11: or whatever it might be. So these attorneys are really
23:28
Speaker 11: crucial in protecting the well being of the child. We
23:32
Speaker 11: have an extreme shortage of these attorneys, Like I can't
23:36
Speaker 11: extreme is not even a good enough word to put it, right, Yeah,
23:41
Speaker 11: And so there it holds up these cases. And so
23:44
Speaker 11: when you see children kind of languishing in the system
23:47
Speaker 11: for years without permanency, part of it is the shortage
23:50
Speaker 11: of guardian items. So there's a couple bills that look
23:53
Speaker 11: to address that. One would start a pilot program that
23:56
Speaker 11: would basically fund them either part time or full time,
23:59
Speaker 11: make sure that the children have representation in four and
24:02
Speaker 11: you know, you're right, Does that sound like a super
24:04
Speaker 11: splashy bill. No, but that is a problem that our
24:08
Speaker 11: judges and our foster parents have brought to lawmakers and said,
24:11
Speaker 11: this is really causing some permanency gaps for these children.
24:15
Speaker 11: So I think that's a good example of lawmakers hopefully
24:18
Speaker 11: listening to their constituents and responding to a problem. And
24:21
Speaker 11: I will say too, this still is sponsored by Delegate
24:23
Speaker 11: Adam Burkhammer, who's a Republican from Lewis County and a
24:26
Speaker 11: foster parent, and so he's seen this firsthand.

24:48
Speaker 3: by the US Department of Health and Human Services. Had
24:51
Speaker 3: the Senator Mike Stewart yesterday a Milia on the show
24:54
Speaker 3: and he was talking about again the foster care issue
24:56
Speaker 3: in this state, and again we said, anytime I have
25:00
Speaker 3: you on, seems like, well, that's kind of that's kind
25:02
Speaker 3: of You cover a lot of things and you cover
25:03
Speaker 3: them well, but that's kind of in your wheelhouse. He
25:07
Speaker 3: referred to the the I guess the little heated exchange
25:11
Speaker 3: that happened about foster care with he and the other
25:13
Speaker 3: gentleman last week. You want to expound upon that a
25:15
Speaker 3: little bit, Oh.
25:16
Speaker 11: God, sure, I mean, I will say, in the years
25:19
Speaker 11: that I've been covering the capital, it definitely was one
25:21
Speaker 11: of the top most heated exchanges between a lawmaker and
25:24
Speaker 11: an agency head. And they can, you know, they can
25:27
Speaker 11: get into it a little bit, but it was certainly
25:29
Speaker 11: a heated one. I mean, Senator Stewart put forth a
25:33
Speaker 11: bill that would do a third party study of our
25:36
Speaker 11: foster care system, and I believe it was going to
25:39
Speaker 11: require DHS to pay for that study. And the head
25:45
Speaker 11: of DOHS, Alex Mayor, he's been on the job for
25:47
Speaker 11: a couple of months, study, I don't need that study.
25:49
Speaker 11: I'm I'm looking at the problems down trying to implement them.
25:53
Speaker 11: And you know, lawmakers have the power to go ahead
25:55
Speaker 11: and do the study. They don't have to do what
25:57
Speaker 11: an agency head tells them to do.
26:00
Speaker 2: Or.
26:00
Speaker 11: Stewart's response to that was just a very fiery exchange, like, Okay, well,
26:03
Speaker 11: we tried to offer you help. We tried to offer
26:06
Speaker 11: you third party help to come in and get your
26:09
Speaker 11: your problems or outline your problems, and you're refusing it.
26:13
Speaker 11: So when this is not fixed in two years and
26:16
Speaker 11: when they're still children in danger, it's going to rest
26:19
Speaker 11: solely on you. Yeah, And it was just it was
26:22
Speaker 11: very very intense.
26:23
Speaker 3: It was it was indeed very intense. And you know,
26:25
Speaker 3: I had Senator Steward on the show yesterday and he
26:27
Speaker 3: just basically said, you know, tired of the excuses and
26:30
Speaker 3: so on and so forth. So today, as we said,
26:34
Speaker 3: you said, there's not I mean a whole lot big
26:36
Speaker 3: on your agenda today. But in the in the world
26:38
Speaker 3: of the legislature, Amelia, you know that could change at
26:41
Speaker 3: a moment's notice.
26:42
Speaker 11: Right, Yeah, you know, I don't want to say there
26:44
Speaker 11: are big things. It's just a lot of builds are
26:47
Speaker 11: really starting to move now. This new House committee process
26:50
Speaker 11: certainly has changed things this year.
26:52
Speaker 3: Are you a fan of that process? Amelia? From a
26:54
Speaker 3: media member, are you a fan of that process? Yes?
26:57
Speaker 11: I think so. I think it's been challenging this figure
27:00
Speaker 11: out when to write about bills because they're in committee
27:02
Speaker 11: for so many days. But something I love about it
27:05
Speaker 11: is by the time the bill hits the floor. I'm
27:07
Speaker 11: really familiar with it, and that I think is really helpful.
27:11
Speaker 11: And I've actually seen lawmakers see much more familiar with
27:13
Speaker 11: legislation this session, and so I think that person cool.
27:17
Speaker 11: But I would say there's still some kinks to be
27:19
Speaker 11: worked out. I know I've had constituents reach out to me, readers,
27:23
Speaker 11: I should say, reach out to me and say they
27:25
Speaker 11: still aren't posting the agendas early enough for me to
27:27
Speaker 11: get down to Charleston. Because of course this committee process
27:30
Speaker 11: replaced the public hearing process. But for me and my capacity,
27:35
Speaker 11: I feel like it's been helpful.
27:37
Speaker 7: And the question becomes, will they do it again next year?
27:40
Speaker 7: Will this be something moving forward? Any feel on that
27:43
Speaker 7: at this point?
27:45
Speaker 11: I can't imagine that they would walk it back after
27:47
Speaker 11: all the work to implement it this year. But of
27:50
Speaker 11: course I always say I don't like to predict the
27:51
Speaker 11: future in this building.
27:53
Speaker 5: Understandable, not a good idea.
27:57
Speaker 3: Milia nicely, I will we all will be watching you,
28:00
Speaker 3: are listening to you, reading you. All the media is
28:03
Speaker 3: with you.
28:03
Speaker 11: How's that?
28:04
Speaker 3: How's that? We appreciate you. I appreciate you being here
28:07
Speaker 3: as always. We'll talk again. So thanks a lot. By y'all.
28:10
Speaker 3: Amelia nicely from West Virginia. Watch yeah, I said that,
28:13
Speaker 3: Amanda about Amelia. You know, every time I have her
28:15
Speaker 3: on it seems like we talk about one particular thing.
28:18
Speaker 3: It all has to do with kids. Amelia cover so
28:20
Speaker 3: many things and does it so dang well. However, that's you.
28:24
Speaker 3: You can when you read her stuff, you can kind
28:27
Speaker 3: of see the passion that she has for this, for
28:30
Speaker 3: this particular topic.
28:31
Speaker 7: And I think all reporters come at things, you know,
28:33
Speaker 7: we all have our own lens that we see things through,
28:36
Speaker 7: and that's why it's important to have such a variety
28:39
Speaker 7: of reporters. But she's a mom, and so you don't
28:41
Speaker 7: get much deeper than that when it comes to the
28:44
Speaker 7: welfare of children, and you know, she's sweet on Twitter
28:48
Speaker 7: when you see the things she posts about, you know,
28:51
Speaker 7: mom life, and so I think that anybody can feel
28:54
Speaker 7: for a foster child and want that system improved, But
28:57
Speaker 7: when you're a mom, you see it through different eyes.
28:59
Speaker 3: Are you doing any better than I am? At referring
29:01
Speaker 3: to it as Twitter? U H, I'm not.
29:03
Speaker 5: Actually, I'm sorry X No.
29:05
Speaker 3: No, that's why I said, because I have a hard time.
29:08
Speaker 3: It's I think it's when you use it as a verb,
29:11
Speaker 3: then it becomes an issue.
29:12
Speaker 5: And now you say post instead of.
29:14
Speaker 3: Yeah or I xed that just when you say I
29:18
Speaker 3: X that, just that does that sounds all kinds of wrong.
29:20
Speaker 7: Well, if you look now like where you would normally
29:23
Speaker 7: where it would have normally said previously said retweet, it
29:27
Speaker 7: says reposts. So but x sounds kind of cool. And
29:30

30:23
Speaker 3: I can tell you Millie is never going to retire.
30:26
Speaker 3: She just changes jobs a lot. She'll be on the
30:29
Speaker 3: show tomorrow, and I will have to say, because I
30:31
Speaker 3: am kind of a foodie. If you've followed me on
30:32

30:36
Speaker 3: too hard of a time when I post a picture
30:38
Speaker 3: of a pizza or a cheeseburger or something like that.
30:40
Speaker 3: But when I post something healthy, either that my wife
30:43
Speaker 3: has made or I've gotten out in a restaurant somewhere,
30:45
Speaker 3: she will compliment me, but she doesn't. She doesn't give

34:40
Speaker 5: Well that is very nice. Thank you. Well, you've known
34:43
Speaker 5: each other for a long time.
34:44
Speaker 3: There's there's one in a row. It's a former boss
34:46
Speaker 3: of mine. Now I talked about it. We talked about
34:50
Speaker 3: it for a while. We're going to start a new show,
34:51
Speaker 3: Amanda and I next week on the Metro News platform.
34:56
Speaker 3: It'll be across the state of West Virginia. You're here
34:57
Speaker 3: in Charleston, of course, on w c h AS. So
35:00
Speaker 3: it'll be noon to three. And somebody asked to me yesterday, man,
35:04
Speaker 3: I was out somewhere and somebody said, so, what's the
35:06
Speaker 3: show going to be like? And I went, let me
35:09
Speaker 3: get back to you on that. It's going to be
35:10
Speaker 3: a work in progress. Now I think we're going to
35:12
Speaker 3: have fun with it. Noon to one is primarily going
35:14
Speaker 3: to be you doing the news thing, because that's what
35:17
Speaker 3: you do. I'll join sometime probably toward the end of
35:21
Speaker 3: the noon hour after one, You and I will we'll
35:23
Speaker 3: go back and forth a little bit. Then we get
35:26
Speaker 3: you down the street to your real job.
35:27
Speaker 5: Yeah, and then I'll head down to thirteen News and
35:30
Speaker 5: do that job.
35:31
Speaker 3: Do that job, and then then I'll stick around and
35:33
Speaker 3: one thing I am going to do on the show
35:34
Speaker 3: though at yesterday, and I talked to some folks from
35:37
Speaker 3: the Municipal League. When I started doing this show in
35:40
Speaker 3: two thousand and twenty, and to think for a minute,
35:43
Speaker 3: it was COVID nothing, nothing counted. Back then, I did
35:46
Speaker 3: a savement called Mayor Monday, and I started off every
35:49
Speaker 3: Monday with Charleston Mayor Amy good one and then because
35:51
Speaker 3: of scheduling issues and whatever, we started doing a different
35:54
Speaker 3: mayor every Monday. And again, a lot of the mayors
35:57
Speaker 3: in our community, they're not all, you know, full time mayors,
36:01
Speaker 3: the Huntings and like, they're not all like the Charleston
36:03
Speaker 3: or Honeys and mayor they have other jobs, and so
36:05
Speaker 3: it sometimes would be a struggle to be able to
36:07
Speaker 3: get a mayor who wasn't working at the at the
36:10
Speaker 3: plant or you know, what's doing something else. So I
36:12
Speaker 3: am going to bring back the Mayor Monday segment. However,
36:15
Speaker 3: it's going to be from all over the state of
36:17
Speaker 3: West Virginia. So I'm looking forward to talking to mayors
36:22
Speaker 3: in Martinsburg and in Milton and in mate Wine. I
36:26
Speaker 3: mean all the only only mayors. Only mayors with ms
36:29
Speaker 3: will be allowed on the show. But I am going
36:30
Speaker 3: to bring that back. But one thing I am going
36:32
Speaker 3: to do on my portion of the show too, is
36:34
Speaker 3: there's going to be a whole lot of time for
36:36
Speaker 3: calls and texts. Not not as much guests heavy as
36:39
Speaker 3: what the early part of the show is, but I
36:41
Speaker 3: mean that like maybe say two thirty on all calls,
36:44
Speaker 3: all text.
36:44
Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it'll be really great for people to
36:46
Speaker 7: have that outlet throughout the day and do that. And
36:49
Speaker 7: we're going to end that first hour really focus on
36:52
Speaker 7: the news of the day, what's breaking at that hour.
36:54
Speaker 7: You know, so often a news conference is just wrapped
36:56
Speaker 7: up or one is taking place, so we can dip
36:59
Speaker 7: into those news compsferences, we can listen and bring you
37:02
Speaker 7: you know, exactly what's happening the moment that it is happening.
37:05
Speaker 5: So I think that's going to be really special.
37:06
Speaker 7: And what is also very special is when you live
37:10
Speaker 7: in West Virginia, wherever the news is, it's local because
37:14
Speaker 7: that's just how we roll. It feels local, whether you,
37:18
Speaker 7: like you said, you're in an eastern panhandle or you know,
37:21
Speaker 7: in the southern coal fields. You care about what's going on.
37:23
Speaker 7: And the show I do at five thirty every day,
37:26
Speaker 7: Tonight Live, is a statewide show. And what I find
37:29
Speaker 7: from viewers so many times is that they just love
37:33
Speaker 7: knowing what's going on in their families, community and in
37:36
Speaker 7: a way that they don't have to go on the
37:37
Speaker 7: internet and search it out. And I think that this
37:39
Speaker 7: will give us an opportunity, you know, to create that
37:43
Speaker 7: cohesive afternoon, a local afternoon.
37:46
Speaker 5: We're really excited about it.
37:47
Speaker 3: And if it doesn't work, I just happen to know
37:50
Speaker 3: because of my years in radio. In my attic, I
37:52
Speaker 3: have stacks of old Casey Kasem American top forties.
37:56
Speaker 7: We'll just roll those, keep your feet on the ground
37:58
Speaker 7: and keep reaching for the stars.
38:00
Speaker 3: Indeed, a couple of quick notes here. City Charleston has
38:03
Speaker 3: a budget. Aaron Parker story post to wv metronews dot
38:06
Speaker 3: com City council last night voted unanimously to pass a
38:09
Speaker 3: new budget for physical year twenty twenty six, one hundred
38:11
Speaker 3: and thirteen million dollar budget that sees all the critical
38:14
Speaker 3: services and operations maintained. Does not include any new taxes
38:17
Speaker 3: or increases to current city taxes. You can read all
38:20
Speaker 3: about that at a part of aeronstorywv metronews dot com.
38:24
Speaker 3: All right, I want to talk about cell phones for
38:26
Speaker 3: a moment, and and by the way, a little bit
38:28
Speaker 3: later on the show, we are going to go live
38:29
Speaker 3: to the Capital if their schedule allows, around fifty nine
38:32
Speaker 3: to fifty five or so, we'll go talk to Meadows
38:34
Speaker 3: and Wilson if their schedule allows. HB two thousand and
38:38
Speaker 3: three was advanced by the House Education Committee, and it
38:41
Speaker 3: would for the most part, ban cell phones from classrooms. Now.
38:45
Speaker 3: The bill amanda mandates county boards of education to develop
38:49
Speaker 3: policies for the upcoming school year. All right, the bill
38:53
Speaker 3: was introduced. If you'll recall on the state of the state,
38:55
Speaker 3: the governor talked about this, got applause and got applause
38:59
Speaker 3: about that. So I'd like to maybe you get some feedback,
39:02
Speaker 3: and I've already got some from you folks, Call or text,
39:07
Speaker 3: what do you think about it, and I think a
39:08
Speaker 3: lot of it, Amanda, has to do with how the
39:11
Speaker 3: whole thing is going to play out. It's not a
39:12
Speaker 3: simple no cell phones, leave them at home. It's not
39:15
Speaker 3: that sort of thing at all. All fifty five county
39:19
Speaker 3: boards have to come up with a plan and submit
39:22
Speaker 3: it for how they plan to implement this, because most
39:25
Speaker 3: people would say what we're doing now with having kids
39:29
Speaker 3: connected to devices is not working. And I will say this,
39:34
Speaker 3: I think the parents will have a much bigger issue
39:36
Speaker 3: with this than what the kids will.
39:38
Speaker 7: There is something to be said about being able to
39:40
Speaker 7: connect with your student at school any moment, any time
39:43
Speaker 7: that you might want to. I think there's also something
39:45
Speaker 7: to be said when you think about I know as
39:48
Speaker 7: an adult, how distracting a phone can be throughout the day.
39:52
Speaker 7: And so there are great conversations that need to be
39:55
Speaker 7: had about the convenience of the phone and the concentration
39:58
Speaker 7: of the student, and that's something that they're debating and honestly,
40:02
Speaker 7: right now, this bill seems to be moving forward in
40:05
Speaker 7: a way that's trendy that it's going to be a law.
40:11
Speaker 7: Interestingly enough, Ohio has passed a similar bill and been
40:16
Speaker 7: signed into law, and you look at some of the
40:18
Speaker 7: things and the comments from students, I'm sorry, from teachers
40:21
Speaker 7: who say they're able to get that focus back from
40:23
Speaker 7: children that they maybe haven't had for a while. And
40:26
Speaker 7: so that's something that is being looked at right now.
40:29
Speaker 7: They are about eighty other states that have signed these
40:33
Speaker 7: phone free school acts. Students would have accessibility in some cases,
40:37
Speaker 7: and some of these states they have them at lunch,
40:40
Speaker 7: they can have them when they're in the hallways, but
40:42
Speaker 7: once they're in class, that phone is sto.
40:44
Speaker 3: To Well, what they've done in some areas that I've
40:46
Speaker 3: seen and I've read about, is there's a lock box
40:49
Speaker 3: in the beginning at the at the front of the classroom,
40:51
Speaker 3: and so it's not so the students go up all
40:55
Speaker 3: picture like a locker for lack of a better term.
40:57
Speaker 3: They go up and they put the phones in there
40:59
Speaker 3: and they locked a minute. The end of the class
41:00
Speaker 3: they can get it.
41:01
Speaker 2: Now.
41:01
Speaker 3: Some schools have gotten much much further than that, I guess,
41:06
Speaker 3: and I'll get to some text here momentarily. I guess.
41:08
Speaker 3: I just and you know, I'm the old guy. I'm
41:11
Speaker 3: the guy that's you know, I'm you're you're the person
41:13
Speaker 3: with the computer. I'm the person with ten thousand pieces
41:15
Speaker 3: of paper.
41:15
Speaker 5: Over here for the paper this morning.
41:18
Speaker 3: But but but I will say this, somehow we managed
41:24
Speaker 3: to go all day When I was a kid, you know,
41:27
Speaker 3: got on the school bus at seven fifteen, seven thirty twenty,
41:29
Speaker 3: did not talk to my parents at all until I
41:31
Speaker 3: got home from school. They didn't have to, you know,
41:33
Speaker 3: there was no way to text me to tell me
41:35
Speaker 3: about practice or about you know, after school this or that.
41:37
Speaker 3: What we managed to do with that? And I'm telling
41:40
Speaker 3: you write it down, As my grandmother would say, I done,
41:42
Speaker 3: took and told you all right. The parents will have
41:45
Speaker 3: a much bigger issue with this than what the kids will.
41:47
Speaker 7: Did you have a payphone at your school? Yes, we
41:49
Speaker 7: had a payphone, and I remember you call collect yeah.
41:52
Speaker 3: Or I mean you can go to the office and
41:54
Speaker 3: you could say I need to you know, I need
41:56
Speaker 3: to and they would ask you. I never did that.
41:58
Speaker 7: But there might be some things, you know, some other
42:00
Speaker 7: things that could come along with this, you know, perhaps
42:02
Speaker 7: residual effects. There are going to be some who say,
42:04
Speaker 7: you know what, if there's an emergency, I want my
42:06
Speaker 7: kid to have their phone that I pay for in
42:08
Speaker 7: their hand, be able to text me or call me
42:10
Speaker 7: the second they need me. And there are some others
42:12
Speaker 7: that might say, you know what, if we can't communicate
42:14
Speaker 7: about practice all day, if we can't communicate about what's
42:16
Speaker 7: for dinner, if we can't communicate about X, Y and Z,
42:19
Speaker 7: it's going to force us to be maybe a little
42:21
Speaker 7: more organized and you know, create some different structure that
42:25
Speaker 7: we don't have to create.
42:29
Speaker 5: In a world without the technology.
42:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, text says cell phones should not be banned in classrooms.
42:35
Speaker 3: The use of cell phones in the classroom needs banned
42:38
Speaker 3: in the classroom. That I think the texture is saying
42:40
Speaker 3: empowers teachers to strictly enforce the rules and increase the
42:42
Speaker 3: penalty if a student breaks the rule. There is no
42:44
Speaker 3: need in revoking the devices. That goes too far, says
42:48
Speaker 3: a texture. Text says, I'd like to see school phone
42:51
Speaker 3: banning go further than the classroom. How about students keep
42:53
Speaker 3: them in their lockers the entire day and only check
42:55
Speaker 3: them in between classes. Then maybe when a fight breaks out,
42:58
Speaker 3: the others may be more like to help break it
43:00
Speaker 3: up instead of filming it and shouting, Oh to get

45:56
Speaker 3: Cell phones should not be allowed in the workplace unless
45:59
Speaker 3: it's related and issued by the employer. A lot of
46:03
Speaker 3: companies actually have those rules. I don't know how many
46:07
Speaker 3: people follow them. And you kind of looked at me
46:10
Speaker 3: when I said, I think the parents are going to
46:12
Speaker 3: have a much bigger issue with this than the kids.
46:16
Speaker 3: I really really think. I've done a lot of reading
46:20
Speaker 3: on this, what it's done in other states, and the
46:22
Speaker 3: kids when they were interviewed, the high school students or whatever,
46:25
Speaker 3: or middle school or whatever, they were said, well, once
46:27
Speaker 3: I got used to it, it was okay. It was
46:30
Speaker 3: my mom that had the heart attack over the whole thing,
46:34
Speaker 3: because sometimes they have a hard time in letting the
46:37
Speaker 3: kids go.
46:39
Speaker 7: We don't understand the pressure that these children are facing
46:42
Speaker 7: right now having these cell phones. You know, I remember
46:46
Speaker 7: coming home from vacation and being so excited to check
46:48
Speaker 7: the answering machine.
46:49
Speaker 6: You know.
46:49
Speaker 7: I was like, my mom was like, nope, we have
46:51
Speaker 7: everything in the house, but you're all that right. But
46:54
Speaker 7: that was so exciting to have that communication. And now
46:57
Speaker 7: communication is almost over. So you have to wonder, you know,
47:02
Speaker 7: maybe these kids, if they say, hey, you can't have
47:04
Speaker 7: this cell phone in school, the kind of pressure that
47:07
Speaker 7: might take off them.
47:08
Speaker 5: It also might really cause.
47:09
Speaker 7: Some pressure on parents because they don't have that access
47:12
Speaker 7: to their child that they have grown accustomed to.
47:15
Speaker 3: And maybe the parents are going to have to look
47:16
Speaker 3: at the kids and say, Okay, you're going to have
47:18
Speaker 3: to remember I'm not going to text you and remind
47:20
Speaker 3: you that at three point fifteen you're going to be
47:23
Speaker 3: x amount of you know X place and I'm going
47:25
Speaker 3: to pick you up and we're going to go to
47:27
Speaker 3: practice or whatever. I mean again, I'm the old guy.
47:29
Speaker 3: We got on the bus and you know, they said, okay,
47:32
Speaker 3: at four o'clock, remember you have this to go to
47:34
Speaker 3: you just get you just got to remember it.
47:36
Speaker 7: But beyond that, the focus and the study and focusing
47:38
Speaker 7: on what is important, and what is important is what
47:41
Speaker 7: that teacher is telling you the kids and the lessons
47:44
Speaker 7: that they need to be learning and using that time
47:46
Speaker 7: in the most valuable way sometimes kids learn. I remember
47:49
Speaker 7: doing a story in Boone County years ago, and this
47:51
Speaker 7: could be very different now, but this was many years ago.
47:53
Speaker 7: I remember them saying, we text the kids because that's
47:56
Speaker 7: the way we can connect with them right now, that's
47:58
Speaker 7: the way that they're communicating.
47:59
Speaker 5: And so you have to you hear that phrase over
48:01
Speaker 5: and over again.
48:02
Speaker 7: Meet people where they are and I've found that with
48:04
Speaker 7: some younger colleagues, they're not going to respond to an email,
48:07
Speaker 7: but if you text them, you know they're going.
48:09
Speaker 5: To see the text message. And so it's just an
48:11
Speaker 5: evolving process.
48:13
Speaker 3: To Dave Allan showing five Eadieline Brown to you probably
48:15
Speaker 3: buying Morgan Tomorgan if you're injured higher Morgan to Morgan,
48:17
Speaker 3: America's largest injury law firm, Texas, I want my child
48:20
Speaker 3: to have a religious exemption for the cell phone. Okay, uh,
48:24
Speaker 3: I think that was done a little tongue in cheek there, Texas.
48:26
Speaker 3: Emergency situations and schools can be really big deals. Cell
48:29
Speaker 3: phones or tools to deal with major emergencies. Not having
48:32
Speaker 3: them in major emergency situations will be a very bad scenario.
48:35
Speaker 3: God forbid if and when it happens. Also, students with
48:38
Speaker 3: a camera at their fingertips to church teachers from using
48:40
Speaker 3: a piece of language or behavior says the text. And
48:44
Speaker 3: I had a good buddy of mine who's just I
48:47
Speaker 3: think he's son, just graduated from high school last year
48:49
Speaker 3: and something again not having kids, I don't realize, he said,
48:52
Speaker 3: you'd be surprised at the You know, my kids school
48:54
Speaker 3: has an app and that's how they communicate things are
49:00
Speaker 3: through their app. They go to the school's app. So Texas,
49:04
Speaker 3: Dave is absolutely correct. The helicopter moms are the ones
49:07
Speaker 3: that will have the most difficulty. Says it me be
49:09
Speaker 3: politically Craig and say helicopter dads too. The parents, All right, Dave,
49:15
Speaker 3: all the kids. These kids are listening to those new
49:17
Speaker 3: fangled AM radios and listening to all that jitterbug music.
49:20
Speaker 3: Next thing you know, they don't want film strips in
49:22
Speaker 3: classes a text. Let's see if mister Wilson and mister
49:27
Speaker 3: Meadows are at the capitol gentlemen, and I use that
49:30
Speaker 3: term loosely. Good morning, morning, Dave. How you doing, Dave
49:33
Speaker 3: and Amanda?
49:34
Speaker 17: I'm well, I'm well sell funds of run the country.
49:38
Speaker 3: Well, I think we were a heck of a lot
49:40
Speaker 3: better off without them, But that's just me.
49:42
Speaker 17: Do you remember going to school and at like at
49:45
Speaker 17: seven o'clock in the morning, you would go over like
49:47
Speaker 17: your mom says, Okay, what are you doing? I got
49:49
Speaker 17: football practice. I'm gonna stick around and watch the soccer
49:52
Speaker 17: get you know, I'm gonna stick around for whatever after that.
49:54
Speaker 17: I'll be home by nine, And then you didn't see
49:57
Speaker 17: your parents again have contact with them until nine talk
50:00
Speaker 17: that night.
50:00
Speaker 3: I just said that a little bit earlier. We didn't
50:03
Speaker 3: have white vans running around though either. Back in then
50:05
Speaker 3: your champions did. You just went and got candy from
50:09
Speaker 3: him and left and they gave you a ryme and
50:12
Speaker 3: and that's the story of how we hired Dave Wilson, uh,
50:16
Speaker 3: except except it wasn't candy. It was bacon. That's what
50:20
Speaker 3: it was.
50:22
Speaker 5: Actually, I saw him at Chick fil A the other day.
50:24
Speaker 5: It was Chick fil a sandwich.
50:26
Speaker 3: Actually, statistically, your kids were more likely to be kidnapped
50:29
Speaker 3: in the seventies than they are today. Look it up. Okay,
50:33
Speaker 3: all right, all right, we'll take your word for it.
50:36
Speaker 5: What's on the agenda today at the Capitol, guys.
50:39
Speaker 17: Well, I don't know if you've heard, but we are
50:42
Speaker 17: launching not we as in the stations, but the state
50:45
Speaker 17: of West Virginia is launching a major investigation into the
50:49
Speaker 17: unjust uh snub of w basketball.
50:53
Speaker 3: From the NCAA tournament.
50:54
Speaker 17: JB.
50:54
Speaker 3: Mccusky's going to.
50:55
Speaker 17: Join us at ten oh six. What else we getting
50:57
Speaker 17: into today, So.
50:58
Speaker 3: It'll be by me bye.
51:00
Speaker 17: We have Senator Patrick Martin at ten thirty on FB
51:04
Speaker 17: five oh five, which is this energy bill that supposedly
51:07
Speaker 17: will cut utility rates.
51:09
Speaker 3: We'll get into that.
51:10
Speaker 17: It also would you know, essentially potentially create the use
51:16
Speaker 17: of more coal. I have some questions about that, but
51:18
Speaker 17: you know, we'll talk energy and try to understand it.
51:21
Speaker 17: There was actually, uh, I don't know if did you
51:22
Speaker 17: see Dan?
51:23
Speaker 2: I think you saw it.
51:23
Speaker 17: Dave Dan Wilkins column in the USA today have great look,
51:27
Speaker 17: great look for the state of West Virginia compared us
51:29
Speaker 17: to an snl skit.
51:31
Speaker 3: Yeah. I thought that when when mccusky was on this
51:33
Speaker 3: show earlier. I forgot to bring that up. Yeah, he
51:35
Speaker 3: said he was waiting for the writers, said he was
51:36
Speaker 3: waiting for Keenan Thompson to come out at any time
51:38
Speaker 3: and say live from New York and Saturday Night Live, guys,
51:41
Speaker 3: we'll be listening at ten oh six. I appreciate it.
51:44
Speaker 17: Thanks a lot, all right, I'm glad you improved the
51:47
Speaker 17: show today.
51:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's the whole entire goal. All right, Thanks guys.
51:52
Speaker 5: Take care.
51:53
Speaker 3: TEX says nearly all communication and Putnam's secondary schools are
51:56
Speaker 3: done through online apps. Tex says, when did the rise
51:59
Speaker 3: in eighty HG case of jump It was after kids
52:02
Speaker 3: had phones. Look at how zoned out they get with
52:04
Speaker 3: phones and tablets. They should get rid of those two
52:07
Speaker 3: in class you know. Again, I will say this quickly.
52:10
Speaker 3: I spend a lot of time in classrooms when I
52:12
Speaker 3: work for the state, and I would go in and
52:13
Speaker 3: do voter registration drives or whatnot. It's as big a
52:15
Speaker 3: problem for the teachers as it was for the kids.
52:18
Speaker 10: Sure.
52:18
Speaker 7: I mean, we're all susceptible to these distractions that are
52:21
Speaker 7: out there, and it is won So it's just like
52:23
Speaker 7: anything too much of a good thing, maybe never a
52:27
Speaker 7: not a good thing.
52:28
Speaker 3: All right. Metro News Midday with Amanda and myself will
52:30
Speaker 3: begin next Monday on all the Metro News platform stations.
