Speaker 1: Hello and welcome. This is radioi's History Show and I'm
0:05
your host and reader for today, Joseph Bolt, so happy
0:09
to be with you for this time. And as you know,
0:13
before we begin any program, we just need to remind
0:16
you that RADIOI is listener driven and we welcome any
0:21
of your comments or suggestions about our programming. So that
0:27
means if you have any thoughts or comments or suggestions,
0:32
please call us and the number to call would be
0:35
eight five nine four two two six three nine zero
0:41
and let us know what you are thinking. And as
0:45
you know, RADIOI is a reading service that's intended for
0:50
people who are blind or have other disabilities that make
0:54
it difficult to read printed material. I'll cite the sources
0:59
of as we go along, as I usually do, and
1:03
today I thought we would focus on an individual that
1:09
you may have heard of before that recently died. His
1:15
name was Aldrich Ames. So let's get to reading about
1:21
mister Ames and see what he was all about. Lee
1:27
Wiser snapped awake in a rush of adrenaline. His watch,
1:32
the one he had bought in Berlin with the red
1:36
star and the letter CCCP on the dial, said three
1:40
a m. He showered quickly dressed in a pale gray suit,
1:48
left his wife and two sleeping kids in bed, and
1:52
drove swiftly from his home in the Maryland suburbs toward Washington.
1:59
The roads were in empty on this Monday President's Day,
2:03
February twenty one, nineteen ninety four. The federal government was
2:08
closed and the people who made it run were still asleep.
2:13
He steered his nineteen ninety one black Ford Taurus through
2:17
the deserted side streets of the Capitol and into the
2:21
garage of the FBI's Washington Metropolitan Field Office. Wiser was
2:28
a tall man of thirty nine years old, bespeckled, his
2:34
mustache flecked with gray. Wiser was an FBI supervisory special
2:40
agent who had joined the bureau in nineteen eighty three
2:44
after working as a Navy lawyer for nine months. Wiser
2:50
had worked out of his cramped cocoon of an office
2:55
twelve hours a day. Wiser was working on the biggest
3:00
case of his life. It was an espionage case code
3:06
named night Mover. Everyone worked, everyone working rather on this case. Wiser,
3:15
his agents, the surveillance team had all taken a light
3:21
detector test and abandoned the idea of time off. He
3:27
and his squad had found a mole inside the Central
3:31
Intelligence Agency. The mole had burned almost every Soviet agent
3:39
who was secretly working for the United States. At least
3:43
nineteen of them had been arrested and executed. It had
3:48
been a disaster without parallel for the CIA wiser and
3:55
his agents. The listeners who had tapped telephones and planted
4:01
bugs in the mole's house. The accountants who sifted his
4:07
American Express bills, the watchers who trailed him around the clock,
4:13
the black bag agents who stole his trash and surreptitiously
4:19
searched his house. The pilots who flew the light plane
4:24
that secretly tailed his car. All of them had amassed
4:30
a mountain of circumstantial evidence against their target. They had
4:36
come to be on intimate terms with him, calling him
4:39
by his first name, and listening to the chatter and
4:43
babble of his telephone conversations with his wife. They shattered
4:49
him when he took his five year old son to
4:52
the movies, and reacted with disgust when he paid nine
4:57
thousand dollars in cash one day at the Nieman Marcus
5:01
department store to settle his bills. More than that, they
5:07
knew his mind. He was arrogant, he was book smart
5:12
but not street wise, and he was one of the sloppiest,
5:18
most brazen, and least savvy spies imaginable. But Wiser had
5:25
been careful not to underestimate him. The man was, after all,
5:30
a trained intelligence officer. And though the FBI knew their
5:35
man was in touch with the Russians, and though they
5:39
had tracked more than one and a half million dollars
5:43
he had mysteriously deposited into his bank accounts, they never
5:48
had caught him in the act of slipping c i
5:53
A documents into a cash or pocketing a payoff from Moscow.
6:00
Six o'clock, Wiser waited in the dismal squat office as
6:05
the day downed gray and dreary over the Capitol. His
6:12
surveillance crew had spent the night at checkpoints throughout the
6:17
mole's neighborhood across the Potomac River in Arlington, Virginia, a
6:23
fancy suburb, a lot fancier than Wiser or his squad
6:28
could afford. The mole was scheduled to leave tomorrow on
6:34
an official trip to Moscow. The idea that he might
6:39
defect was on every one's mind. A few minutes after seven,
6:46
Wiser gave the order to proceed as planned. Nearly one
6:51
hundred f b I agents and other personnel quietly converged
6:59
on the neighborhood. The men who were going to arrest
7:03
the target drove to their forward staging base, the parking
7:09
lot of an Italian delicatessen. Wiser waited until nearly eight
7:17
o'clock to drive across the Potomac to the US Attorney's office.
7:24
Wiser met Mark J. Hulkauer, the federal prosecutor whom he
7:30
had asked to handle the case in court. The two
7:35
men drove to the office building that housed the courtrooms
7:40
of federal magistrates. Weiser carried papers, including a thirty five
7:47
page affidavit he had written outlining the evidence amassed from
7:53
electronic eavesdropping, breaking ends and thefts. Wiser handed Berry Poorts
8:03
u S Magistrate Judge the papers and left him alone
8:07
in his office. The agent and the prosecutor waited in
8:12
an outer office. After what seemed like an eternity, Porits
8:18
summoned the men to his chambers, and at five minutes
8:23
to ten he began signing warrants for the arrest of
8:27
the mole and his wife. The trap was baited, one
8:34
of the f b I agents telephoned the c i
8:37
a's headquarters in Langley, Virginia and talked to the target's boss.
8:44
The c i A official then called the target at
8:47
home and gave him a carefully scripted message. Rick. He said,
8:55
something important has just turned up. It has a direct
9:00
bearing on the Moscow trip. You had better come into
9:05
the office. I think you need to see it now.
9:10
Rick Eames put down the phone and told his wife
9:15
Rosario that he was going over to the CIA for
9:19
an hour or so. Whatever this was, he needed to
9:23
get it out of the way. He had been looking
9:27
forward to this trip for months. Wearing brown slacks and
9:32
a dark green shirt, he walked out of the house,
9:36
leaving Rosario inside with their son Paul and Rosario's mother, Cecilia.
9:45
He got into his nineteen ninety two Jaguar and rolled
9:49
down the driveway. He turned right on North Randolph Street
9:56
and right again on Quebec. It was then he saw
10:01
two pairs of tail lights directly ahead of him, two
10:05
cars side by side blocking the two lane street. Ames
10:11
braked to a stop, waiting for the car in the
10:14
right hand lane to turn. It didn't move. Two more
10:21
cars swung up behind Aames. Mike Donner, a Hawking swat
10:27
Team agent who along with Wiser, had designed the arrest scenario,
10:34
pulled up close behind the Jaguar and stopped the Honor
10:39
placed a red flasher light on his dashboard. Eight FBI
10:44
agents jumped from the four car surrounding Ames at the
10:49
same time. Back at Ames's home, Yolando Larsen, a Spanish
10:55
speaking FBI agent, rang the doorbell. Rosario dressed in a
11:03
bath robe and hurried to the door. Missus Eames, Larsen said.
11:09
The agent told her her husband was being arrested for
11:12
espionage and she should come with them. Rosario stared and
11:20
went slock with shock. Uncle beck Street, Donner, and a
11:25
fellow agent, Dell Spry, stood at the window of the Jaguar.
11:31
Eames looked up bewildered. Spry ordered them to keep his
11:35
hands in sight and step out of the car. What
11:40
said Eames, lowering the window, get out of the car,
11:45
Donor said. Donner flung open the door and pulled Eames
11:50
to his feet. Put your hands on the car, he said,
11:54
you are under arrest for espionage. Eames's expression from confusion
12:01
to terror. Spry told Ames to put his hands behind
12:05
his head. The agent yanked his arms down one at
12:09
a time and handcuffed him. What is this all about,
12:13
Ames shouted, You're making a big mistake. You must have
12:18
the wrong man. Lots of people want more money, But
12:24
what links would you go to to get it? Would
12:28
you sell your country secrets or information that could lead
12:32
to people's deaths? For Aldrich Ames, the answer was yes.
12:37
A CIA agent who became a Soviet spy. Ames's betrayal
12:43
proved devastating for American assets in the USSR. Between nineteen
12:51
eighty five and his arrest in nineteen ninety four, almost
12:55
ten years, Ames revealed the names of every intelligence agent
13:01
he knew of, leading to the deaths of at least
13:05
ten people. Unlike other double agents throughout history, Ames was
13:11
not motivated by politics or philosophy, but by the millions
13:17
of dollars offered by his Soviet handlers. Money was the motivation,
13:24
He later affirmed. This is the story of Aldrich Ames,
13:31
the CIA double agent who compromised more CIA assets than
13:36
almost any other in American history. Born on May twenty sixth,
13:41
nineteen forty one Aldridge Hazen Rick Ames grew up with
13:47
the CIA all around him. His father worked as a
13:52
CIA analyst, and Ames's peers at school often had parents
13:58
working for the CIA. Also. Shortly after graduating high school,
14:05
Ames started his own CIA career as a summer intern.
14:10
According to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Ames continued
14:15
to work for the CIA while completing his bachelor's degree
14:20
at George Washington University. In nineteen sixty two, he started
14:25
working for the CIA full time, and by nineteen sixty
14:30
nine Ames was sent abroad to work under cover in Ankara, Turkey.
14:39
All the while he continuously received subpar valuations from his superiors.
14:46
One colleague told The New York Times that Ames exuded
14:51
this feeling of superiority to everyone else, though he was
14:55
in his supervisor's opinion on a rubber rung a career ladder.
15:02
The Senate Intelligence Committee. On the Senate Select Committee on
15:06
Intelligence additionally found that ames personnel file was full of
15:11
red flags, including run ins with law enforcement, alcoholism, inattention
15:18
to detail, and procrastination. Ames once even left a case
15:24
of classified documents on a New York subway along the way.
15:31
Ames's personal life suffered as well. His wife divorced him
15:35
on grounds of mental cruelty, and Ames soon found himself
15:39
with thousands of dollars in debt. While living with his girlfriend,
15:45
Maria del Rosario Cassis de Puy, whom Ames had met
15:52
while on an assignment in Mexico City, he began to
15:56
agonize about the state of his finance. I felt a
16:02
great deal of financial pressure, which in retrospect I was
16:07
clearly overreacting to. Ames later explained, according to the Senate
16:12
Select Committee on Intelligence, I had incurred a certain amount
16:18
of personal debt in terms of buying furniture for an apartment,
16:22
and my divorce settlement had left me with no property. Essentially,
16:28
Rosario was living with me at the time. I was
16:31
contemplating the future. I had no house, and we had
16:36
strong plans to have a family, and so I was
16:40
thinking in the longer term. Then Aldrich Ames seemed to
16:45
find a solution to his financial woes, and in nineteen
16:49
eighty five he starts selling CIA secrets to the Soviet Union.
16:55
As the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence reports, Aldridge Aimes
17:00
approached Soviet officials in April of nineteen eighty five with
17:05
an offer of classified information in exchange for money. The
17:09
Soviets agreed and paid Aimes fifty thousand dollars. The relationship
17:15
was sealed over a long, boozy lunch at an elegant
17:19
hotel near the White House. I'm still puzzled as to
17:24
what took me to the next steps, Aames later admitted.
17:30
The main factor on balance, I think was the realization
17:34
after I had received the fifty thousand dollars was a
17:38
sense of the enormity of what I'd done, with fear
17:43
that I had crossed the line that I had not
17:46
clearly considered before. That I crossed the line I could
17:50
never step back. Having crossed that line, Ames plunged further
17:57
into his life as a double agent. As The New
18:00
York Times reports, he readily provided the names of every
18:04
Soviet intelligence official and military officer working for the US,
18:09
as well as information he had about CIA operations against
18:13
the US s R. During one meeting with the Soviets,
18:19
the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence found that Ames provided
18:23
the largest amount of sensitive documents and critical information that
18:28
we know that have ever been passed to the KGB.
18:33
In one particular meeting, he simply carried plastic bags stuffed
18:38
with documents out of the CIA and gave them to
18:41
the KGB. No matter where he went, Ames tended to
18:47
his Soviet connections from Bogataw, Columbia, to Rome, Italy. Ames
18:54
continued to pass on state secrets, and he was handsomely
18:58
rewarded for his efforts. By nineteen eighty nine, the Federal
19:02
Bureau of Investigations reported that Ames had received one point
19:06
eight eight million dollars. In nineteen eighty nine, a CIA
19:12
officer reported that Aimes, upon returning to Washington, was unexplicably wealthy.
19:19
He had paid five hundred and forty thousand dollars in
19:22
cash for a new home near the agency's headquarters and
19:26
was driving a new Jaguar. Yet this set off only
19:30
the faintest of alarms. But Aldridge Ames' work had not
19:35
gone unnoticed. CIA officials had begun to detect a disturbing
19:40
trend as many of their assets were being compromised, arrested,
19:44
and killed. Before long, they began to suspect that someone
19:48
was trading information to the Soviets from within the CIA itself.
19:54
At CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, a team of investigators
19:58
led by Sandra Grimes and Janine Vertefee spent years working
20:06
to determine the identity of the mole leaking secrets to
20:09
the Soviets. In their book Circle of Treason, a CIA
20:14
account of trader Aldrich Ames in The Men He Betrayed,
20:18
Grimes and Vertefe wrote that Aldrich initially struck them as
20:24
an unlikely candidate. He seemed like an absent minded professor
20:29
who was frequently disheveled, unkept, and late. But as Grimes
20:34
noted in a nineteen or rather twenty thirteen video from
20:38
the International Spy Museum in Washington, d C. Aldridg Aims
20:42
seemed like a different person when he returned to Washington,
20:46
d C. From Rome in nineteen eighty nine. I saw
20:49
a totally different Rick Aimes, she said. I saw someone
20:53
who was one of the most confident people I had
20:56
ever seen in my life, and Rick was never confident.
21:01
Ames had fixed his teeth, brought a Jaguar, and started
21:05
wearing six hundred dollars Italian loafers. Though these purchases raised
21:10
some eyebrows, Ames implied that he got his money from
21:14
his wife's rich Columbian family. Suspicious of aimes sudden transformation,
21:20
Grimes and Vertefe made a list of one hundred and
21:23
ninety eight people who had access to the information that
21:26
had been leaked. They then narrowed the list down to three,
21:30
and in nineteen ninety two, Grimes finally found the smoking
21:34
gun that led her to Aldridge Ames. After studying a
21:39
timeline of Ames's bank deposits, she noticed that after each
21:43
lunch Ames had with one Soviet official, he deposited a
21:47
large sum of cash, and all Ames had one point
21:51
three million in deposits from unexplained sources. As Grimes told
21:56
one colleague, that doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell
22:00
what's going on here. Rick is a Russian spy. The
22:04
CIA and FBI surveiled Aldrich Ames, put a tracker on
22:08
his car, tapped his phone, and dug through his garbage.
22:13
Before long, they had enough evidence to arrest both Ames
22:16
and his wife on November twenty one, nineteen ninety four.
22:22
According to Betrayal The Story of Aldrich Ames, an American
22:25
Spy by Tim Weiner, David Johnston, and Neil Lewis, Ames
22:31
initially denied being a double agent's insisting you're making a mistake.
22:36
You've got the wrong man, But Ames soon changes too
22:40
he eventually came clean and admitted to all of his espionage.
22:44
It's not fully clear how much Rosario Ames knew about
22:48
or participated in his crimes, but she signed the couple's
22:52
tax returns and had at least one suspicious phone call
22:55
with Ames. Aldridg Aames pleaded guilty to ever espionage and
23:00
was sentenced to life in prison without parole. As part
23:04
of Ames's plea deal, Rosario Ames pleaded guilty to tax
23:07
of asion and conspiracy to commit espionage and served five
23:12
years in prison. After her release, she moved back to Columbia,
23:16
where her son had been living with her relatives for
23:20
almost a decade. Aldrich Ames had steadily fed information to
23:24
the Soviet Union. Information was compromised American assets in the
23:29
USSR and led to the executions of at least ten people.
23:33
A damage assessment by CIA and FBI officials never got
23:37
to the bottom of the case. Mister Ames, his memory
23:41
damaged by alcohol, could not recall the scope the secrets
23:45
of the secrets he sold. Why did he do it?
23:49
Ames admits that his motivations were purely financial and he
23:54
just wanted a payout. As the then director of the
23:57
Central Intelligence Agency, James Woosley grimly told The New York
24:04
Times the executed assets died because this warped, murdering traitor
24:11
wanted bigger, a bigger house, and a jaguar. An addendum
24:17
to this story, Aldrich Ames, the most murderous turncourt in
24:21
the history of the United of the Central Intelligence Agency,
24:25
whose betrayal in working for the Soviet Union went undetected
24:29
for almost a decade, died on Monday, January five, two
24:35
thousand and twenty six. He was eighty four and had
24:39
been a federal prisoner serving life without paroles since nineteen
24:43
ninety four. His death was recorded in the Federal Bureau
24:47
of Prison's inmate database. A spokesman said he died at
24:52
the Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland. Sources for Today's
25:01
program came from The New York Times dot com, an
25:04
article entitled Aldridge ames CIA turncoat who helped the Soviets
25:09
dies at eighty four, written by Tim Weiner in January
25:13
twenty twenty six, and all That's interesting dot com Aldrich
25:18
Ames the notorious double agent who sold CIA's secrets to
25:22
the USSR, written by Lisa Horning, edited by Colleena Fraga
25:27
in November of twenty twenty five. And finally, from the
25:31
book Betrayal, A Storage A Story of Aldrich Ames, an
25:36
American Spy, written by Tim Weiner and David Johnston and
25:42
O'Neil a. Lewis, Random House, New York, nineteen ninety five. Well,
25:52
that about does it for this chapter of RADIOI history.
25:57
I sure hope that you enjoyed today's program as much
25:59
as as I did researching and reading it. Thank you
26:04
forgiving me your time. To day, I'm your host, Joseph Bolt,
26:09
and I'll be back with another chapter of Radio Eye history.
26:15
Until then, happy trails to you,
