- 0:00Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, Mike Cristino, Dan Hurley.
- 0:03A little later on Donovan Klingen joins us a word on clinging here coach
- 0:08against Manhattan eighteen minutes, seven of eleven, seventeen points, un age twelve
- 0:14of thirteen, twenty one points. And the other thing the free throw shooting
- 0:19last four games fourteen and nineteen. Now he was struggling under fifty percent there
- 0:23in the opening few games. What's changed, if anything except the balls going
- 0:28in obviously, Yeah, I think just focusing more on routine and maybe maybe
- 0:36that that deep breath you know, understanding on a free throw. It's like
- 0:42your technique has got to become more compact. You can't have a big,
- 0:47long release as a free throw shooter. It's too close to the basket and
- 0:56you know, technically things could go wrong. So I think when you get
- 1:00to the foul line, it's about touch, it's about it's about compact,
- 1:06a compact release, and I think it's about some breath work. Yeah,
- 1:11I'll tell you it's working. I was talking to coach Murray about that a
- 1:14little bit, and it's really it's going to be important because he gets to
- 1:18the line. He's going to get to the line, isn't he five,
- 1:19six, seven times a game? More? Maybe? Yeah, and even
- 1:25more if they think you can't make free throws. So that's something in scouting
- 1:30report that we all say, you know somebody that's a fifty percent free throw
- 1:34shooter, sixty percent free throw shooter. Definitely below fifty. You're take a
- 1:41foul around the basket as long as you're not in foul trouble. So he
- 1:45wants to stay out of that zone. At our quick NBA updates, we
- 1:49got to do this every week, coach. We got Jordan Hawkins right now
- 1:53in New Orleans. I was just checking his stats. He started nine games
- 1:57so far, is average in twenty nine minutes. One thing that stood out
- 2:00to me, he's actually a better shooter scorer on the road than he is
- 2:05at home. What is What does that tell you? Is that just dumb
- 2:07luck or he just doesn't mind playing in front of hostile crowds. No,
- 2:13I think that's probably just, you know, some type of an anomaly.
- 2:19I don't you know. Jordan's got such a confidence about him and a toughness
- 2:25in mental belief is confidence from you know, a dad that was on his
- 2:32butt and a mom that knew when to support him and when to let the
- 2:38dad go and do his thing and push hard. I think, you know,
- 2:43and then somebody's just built for the modern game in the NBA. I
- 2:46think, you know, leading up to the draft, I know, we
- 2:51you know, we called around to a bunch of the teams that picked eight,
- 2:54eight, ten, twelve, thirteen and tried to make a late,
- 2:59late push for Hawk to move up a little bit. But I think the
- 3:01Pelicans obviously got a steal. Is you know. I think it's tenth most
- 3:07made threes in the NBA this year and something like second leading scorer or second
- 3:14most points amongst rookies. Pretty good. Yeah, I mean, think about
- 3:17it. He's he's playing in these arenas he's never been in before, and
- 3:20a lot of shooters will say, well, you know, the lighting's different,
- 3:23everything looks different. Whatever. He's averaging almost fifteen a game load,
- 3:27forty one percent from the field, but thirty nine percent from three. I
- 3:30mean, that's pretty impressive for a young guy or rookie playing his first twenty
- 3:35games in the NBA. Yeah. Well, you know, he made threes
- 3:39in uh, pretty easily in the in the big East. Uh, and
- 3:45we play, we play in a bunch of NBA arenas, right, and
- 3:49then he made a bunch in front of seventy five thousand and a big football
- 3:53dome. So I think when they evaluate him as a shooter, they probably
- 3:57had to feel good about it. Quick freshman update. First of all,
- 4:01where's Steph Castle at? Is he going to be able to play in a
- 4:04game here soon? I mean, we'll see where it goes from here.
- 4:09I think, uh, you know, he was on the court with us
- 4:12on uh, you know, doing his first you know, shooting and moving
- 4:15around and you know, which I think is a positive step for him.
- 4:19And as long as he doesn't have any setbacks, I think, you know
- 4:24you're gonna have a chance, you know to see him, you know coming
- 4:29up here. You know, you know, between you know this this weekend
- 4:33through to you know, these upcoming games. I think we're at least feeling
- 4:39like he's he's a lot closer. How much do you need to see him
- 4:42on the court practicing full with the team do you think before you're comfortable and
- 4:46say okay, let's go definitely multiple days, multiple days out there, you
- 4:54know, being active and making sure that that he's feeling great, and so
- 5:00it'll be like I guess in the aftermath the day after practice, is he
- 5:03okay, you need to know what you do. I mean, just these
- 5:08guys they come back, they do, they'll do you know, some non
- 5:12live they'll do shooting and just skill work and maybe dummy offense and versus no
- 5:16defense, and then you'll just give them you know how we feeling. Okay,
- 5:20now we could we could add a little more. I feel great,
- 5:24coach. Okay we can now now we could play one on one all right,
- 5:27I feel great, coach. Now we can go to fours. I
- 5:29just think you know, you got to just it depends on how they respond
- 5:32from then you could add and the other other freshman, Jaden Ross, Jalen
- 5:39Stewart. Stewart's getting a few more minutes now because Castle isn't available. Where
- 5:44you at with those guys? Is it is it too soon to say these
- 5:46guys are ready to really have an impact? Or do you do you see
- 5:49something in practice that tells you okay, yeah, I just you know,
- 5:55with these guys, I think Solo is I like where Solo's heading. I
- 5:59thought what he did at to go Arden was was was great against Texas.
- 6:03I thought he is not a lot of freshmen on top teams that are that
- 6:08are even playing. Most of these teams are really really old, and you
- 6:13know, so he's an outlier. We're trying to be outliers and get quality
- 6:16minutes out of a number of freshmen. Uh. I think Solo eventually will
- 6:19start to really shoot it well for us and prove himself to be, you
- 6:25know, more of a scorer. And I think Stu is you know,
- 6:28Stu's close, you know. I I liked some of the things he's done
- 6:32in some spots here. I think he's growing. I think he's developing.
- 6:35I think the same thing, you know, with with Jayden Ross, I
- 6:39think, uh, you know, college basketball is really old right now,
- 6:42and with that extra COVID year, you're playing against some really old teams and
- 6:46uh, you know, we're trying to balance uh, you know now with
- 6:50development and it's a fine line. Dan, I think I found the oldest
- 6:57man in college basketball. He came from Notre Dame. He's now in North
- 7:00Carolina. You're going to see him at the Garden next week. Cormack Ryan
- 7:04is twenty five years old. What were you doing when you were twenty five
- 7:10where were you. You were an assistant coach somewhere, weren't you. It
- 7:13was in the process of getting fired at Rutgers probably, you know, twenty
- 7:18five. Oh yeah, yeah, I was in like year four or five
- 7:24of my coaching career. And it's you know, the it's the COVID year,
- 7:28it's it's it's the portal, it's nil. You know, these players,
- 7:33now, if you're not a sure fire NBA player, or if you're
- 7:39not an Adamasonogo, that's just like, you know, ready to become a
- 7:43man and go into the professional world. You know, these guys are hanging
- 7:47around. I think my brother just played against somebody on BYU that's like twenty
- 7:53six, twenty seven. Oh, and I know the guy from Memphis like
- 7:58was trying to get his waiver appeal and I think he might have been twenty
- 8:03seven. So that's crazy. Yeah, I think he wanted an a year
- 8:07of eligibility. Could you imagine that? Well, man, I I know
- 8:11I had had I had had enough of college. I was twenty twenty two,
- 8:18twenty three. I might have been in college because I read Shirt of
- 8:22the Year and I think I might have played a year at twenty two.
- 8:26You know, now listen again, if there was no nil back then,
- 8:30was you were getting five dollars meal money after a game if you were lucky,
- 8:35unless you played in the BIS tournament, maybe got twenty five. Yeah,
- 8:39but yeah, this thing is, this has become the G League.
- 8:45You know, it's become a version of of pro sports. Now, that's
- 8:50what college basketball at our level, college football at that high level. That's
- 8:54the world that we're in. You know. So when you hear you know,
- 8:58Jim More talking about you know where you know where he's at and seeing
- 9:01kind of some of his frustration, yeah, you could certainly understand the landscape
- 9:07and how quickly things have changed. Yeah, and not for the better in
- 9:11my opinion. Anyway. Well, coach, we appreciate it. Good luck
- 9:15this week. We'll be with you Kansas and then Carolina next week. Looking
- 9:18forward to it. That's Stan Hurly, thank you, sir, appreciate you
- 9:22guys. See right, we'll be back with more of the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 9:26Coaches Show. Donovan klingon coming up in a moment on lear Field
