- 0:15SPEAKER_02: Maximus Hickens the third.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, actually that's my father on the fourth.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: Oh, sorry, I got it wrong.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: I always get that wrong.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Um, very first, uh the very first interview for this band.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Crazy.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Wheeler.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: So cool.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: And an honor, honestly.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Um, we're talking to Blinder, huh?
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Shoe gazed.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: It's hard to pigeonhole this band, sonically, but they combine.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: I describe them as like early Thornhill if they were a bit shoe gazed.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: That's fair.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: I can say that, but I don't think that does blinder justice either.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Heavy alternative.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Heavy alternative.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: They combine shoe gauges with some um like heavy rock, punk, post-punk vibes.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: They dabble in a little bit of metal sound, but not full-on breakdowns.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: We saw them at Big Town.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: So cool, such got such a cool brand and identity, and uh, I think they're gonna do very big things.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: We caught up with Will and Ella um straight off the flight from Adelaide, the poor things.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: But um they were the talk to the town.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Well, no time to faff around.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Let's get into the talk in the town.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Sam U with Will and Ella from Blinder.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: We are here at Big Sound with arguably one of the most talked about upcoming bands in the scene, Blinder.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Ella and Will, welcome to the show.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having us, man.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: It's a pleasure.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: We're honoured to be your first ever like on-air interview as well.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: It feels quite special.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: We've been frothing you guys, we've been putting you on the show everywhere, but um we start the show the same way every week with every guest, and that is to just get an idea of what you guys are listening to lately.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, tough one.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Do you want to go first?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: You want me to?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Um I gotta think.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I'd say for me, Deft Tones, uh, Paramour, and I've got like a bit of um pop roots, so honestly, um 21 pilots at the moment as well.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that feeled by ramen roster, like paramour.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: You made six, throw them in there as well.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so um, yeah, kind of kind of a bit the same to be honest.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Just a bit of a bit of a mix of stuff, but been um been smashing fontaines recently.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Great band.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Great band.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, Defton is always.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, just a bit of heavy stuff, a bit of kind of that uh alt rock kind of vibe as well.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Been listening to Basement and Citizen as well.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: So yeah, just just a bit of that kind of vibe at the moment.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Rated, rated.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Um look, let's talk blind up because what a year it's been for you guys already.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: The EP's dropped, you've been playing shows and tours everywhere.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: How are you guys sort of feeling about everything that's going on?
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Have you had a chance to sort of take it all in?
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: It's been crazy.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, like we we've been working on the project for a long time, but just like launching it pretty much at the end of last year and then just like kind of seeing what we've been up to the last kind of, I guess we've been getting what, like nine or ten months now?
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Like just yeah, insane.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: We we would not have expected to have done what we've done.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, just really, really um kind of I guess honored to to be able to work with the band that I work with, write with Allah over here.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Um and just yeah, it's been it's been incredible, it's been a lot of fun.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Love that.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: And I mean, you recently rapped a bunch of shows with Ocean Grove.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: We were talking off air about how big some of those rooms were.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: You know, them themselves have such a unique style and sound.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, how has that experience been on the road with them?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it was um pretty inspiring.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Um, honestly, just like unbelievable experience.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Like you can't even explain it, you know.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Like it's yeah, it was sick.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: It's crazy when you realize just like how involved Sammy B is with an alternative scene.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: It's he wrote our like podcast intro.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Not a lot of people know that.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: So look, he I mean, I think I'm wearing Thornhilly, didn't he produce their album as well?
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Like Man's a King.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I think he did bodies.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that they were like such a lovely group of people as well.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and just yeah, like hit being able to listen to them every night was just like it was awesome.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Just you know, even even though we were playing, like just being able to see them five times like we did was just like damn, like this is a serious band, like that they put on like a proper show, you know.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: So that was really really cool to kind of soak in as well and just kind of learn from.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Well, let's talk low res because the EP, it's been out for a little while now, but it feels like it's right on the edge where heavy sort of meets shoe gaze.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: It blends all these different genres in such a cool way.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Um you've got heavy moments where you know the pit can open up, then you've got these really glistening moments.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: What was sort of the central direction you guys wanted to explore when you were writing it?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think um Low Ros is a bit of a bit of an accumulation of kind of all of the things we've been trying to make as a band.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: And we we had so many ideas when we were writing, and we wanted everything to kind of work together, but also like kind of see what people enjoyed from it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Um we all come from quite a lot of different backgrounds, like Ella, like she said, has the pop background.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Frankie, my brother, the drummer, he he's like he's in beatdown bands and stuff.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Like he plays like proper caveman type stuff.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Um so like we've got we've got that, we've got um Dane who's been in like metalcore bands.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Um so it's just like it's kind of an amalgamation of all that stuff.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and we've we've kind of found a sound that we we all really like, that kind of shoe gaze leaning stuff mixed with the heavy.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And I think yeah, low res is kind of like a this is what we can do, and then yeah, we kind of just want to wanted to see what people think, and um yeah, it's been really interesting to see the response to like particular songs.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: What do you reckon?
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um I I agree with everything you said, honestly, that was really good.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Have you been surprised by you know any particular song taking off more than another one?
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Like, have there been favourites as you played them?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Honestly, like I'm pretty shocked with the amount of love that 480p has been getting.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Um, especially because it's like the first song that I sing um with a lead part.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I was just surprised by that, honestly.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Songs like Chrome and Shadows, you know, they're not necessarily cut from the the same cloth, but they work so well on the EP.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: And you said that you know you wanted to put everything on the EP and just say, This is what we can do.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Is there a sound that's you know off limits for inspiration when it comes to you know the blind R brand?
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Um honestly yes and no.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Like we we're super open to doing a lot of different things, but I think we've we've all kind of got a sense of what we like and kind of what's right for the project.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: So we we kind of all have our filters that we put things through um to kind of see if it if it fits what we're kind of trying to aim for in terms of like I don't know, I hate using the word vibe, but vibe, yeah.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: But you know what I'm saying, like it's it's cool to be able to have that flexibility, but we also know like that's that's the pocket it needs to fit into for everything.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: You talked earlier, Ella, in particular, about the pop influences.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: When you know you think of 480 where you're singing on it, would is that sort of maybe from a subconscious level when you're writing, like those pop melodies, do they come into play a little bit, like working them into the the heavier sound?
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean I would say so.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Um, like I I think the thing I love about pop the most is how much like ear candy there is and how much texture there is.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: So I think that background has allowed us to bring that into the heavy shoegaze realm and have all those you know sounds going on in the background as well.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's there's a lot of times where um we kind of bring songs to each other um and Ella will always like take a song that's like 80% done and get it get it to that kind of point of being finished, put all the cool stuff into it.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Hell yeah.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, I got called Flume in a recording session.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Flume.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, by our producer.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: So Okay.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: That's that's gotta be a compliment.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: That is a great thing.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah, yes.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: And look, let's talk Adelaide because it's having a massive blow-up at the moment.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: We've got you guys, bands like Win Big who are on the big sound lineup as well, and then from I guess a more pop and let's say like an indie perspective, you've got the Telemarines, Lonely Spec Towns.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: Um, from the outside, it seems like there's something really special going on in Adelaide.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: From someone on the inside, like what is it that makes the Adelaide scene so you know busy right now?
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I love all those those bands you've listed.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Um, they're they're all really cool.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: I think the one of the good things about Adelaide is cos it is quite small, everyone kind of knows each other and everyone supports each other, and I think that gives people a leg up when they're trying to do their first headliner and they're trying to do their first tour and things like that.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I I think in particular the heavy scene in Adelaide, like I've never never come across because we've we've played in like indie bands, we've played in heavy bands, and it's just like it's crazy how much support there is and how much love there is for each other in the heavy scene there.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, shoutouts everyone in Adelaide.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: Well, look, we are at Big Sound.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: By the time people hear this, they won't have a chance to catch the showcases.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: But what does the rest of the year look like for Blinder and what does you know the early stages of 2027 have in store?
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Um I'd say there's some you know new music coming, um, which is cool.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Um writing more shows, hopefully.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we've we've been we've been busy with shows, and there's probably a couple more shows coming for the year as well.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Um can't really say much about them yet, but we we should have some new music relatively soon.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Um and just yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: We we kind of want to keep going with the momentum that we've got with with LowRez and keep people interested, I guess.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Well, for everyone listening, go and stream LoRez, the debut EP from Blind to wherever you get your music.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Will and Ella, thanks so much for taking the time to chat.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Cheers, man.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
