- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Waffer, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland, County
- 0:12of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37God has created you and I in a way that once we come to know
- 0:41Him, that He wants to have continual union with us,
- 0:44continual relationship with us moment by moment.
- 0:47That's not on Sunday for a few hours, or on a Wednesday, or
- 0:50when you open your Bible in the morning, but He wants to be
- 0:52communing with you moment by moment.
- 0:55And so we keep ourselves in remembrance of God's presence
- 0:5924/7. That's what God's desire is.
- 1:02That's the absolute picture of a perfect kind of humility.
- 1:08My father was always working on some project around the house,
- 1:11the yard or in the garage. He would always request my help
- 1:15in these projects. I would often join him, albeit
- 1:18reluctantly at times. I learned that it wasn't my help
- 1:21that he desired, as I often slowed things down, but my
- 1:25presence and relationship that he enjoyed.
- 1:29Pastor Clark reminds us in today's message that God has
- 1:32created us for constant communion with Him.
- 1:35When we understand and submit to His design, we are far more
- 1:40satisfied now. Here's Pastor Clark in
- 1:42Revelation chapter one with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:46of Grace. Revelation chapter 1.
- 1:49We'll start with where we left off.
- 1:51The lesson is he who reads and those who hear the words of this
- 1:54prophecy and keep those things which are written in it for the
- 1:58time is near. The importance of reading the
- 2:02Book of Revelation and not only reading it, but listening to it
- 2:05and doing the things it says is promised blessing.
- 2:09And so I want to encourage you guys as you're here to realize
- 2:12that this is a very, very special book.
- 2:14The whole book, the whole Bible is special, but there's a
- 2:17uniqueness to the Book of Revelation that God has promised
- 2:20to implant in your lives, a degree of blessing that is
- 2:24unlike any other blessing that you will get in any other book.
- 2:27And it has to do with revelation, illumination, wisdom
- 2:32that God gives you as your life changes as you study this book.
- 2:36And the word blessing comes from the Hebrew word that means more
- 2:39to be guided, not so much to what I'm going to get out of my
- 2:42life or what do you have for me, God.
- 2:44But it's the privilege to be guided on the narrow path away
- 2:48from all the lies of the philosophies of man in this
- 2:52world that we Live Today. All the confusing things that
- 2:54are being taught in colleges and high schools and on TV in The
- 2:58History Channel, all these things that come across to
- 3:01basically denounce the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 3:05We're guided on this narrow path away from these kind of in the
- 3:09modern times so that we won't be deceived into following
- 3:13darkness, deceptions of the evil 1 and the allures of this fallen
- 3:18world. The Book of Revelation
- 3:20captivates you when you are walking in continual remembrance
- 3:24of God. And that's the biggest thing I
- 3:26think that we all struggle with every day.
- 3:28How can I keep God in my thoughts all day long, moment by
- 3:32moment? Someone called me recently on
- 3:34vacation and they said, you know, I was doing really good
- 3:37for three days, keeping my mind on the Lord in the Word.
- 3:40And then all of a sudden the 4th, 5th day came.
- 3:42I just thought I needed a diversion, watch some TV, just
- 3:44chill out. And the person admitted that
- 3:47they started forgetting about God a little bit.
- 3:49And as they started forgetting about God, their lives began to
- 3:52unwind and go back into old patterns and old places, old
- 3:56sinful impulses and temptations. And so God has created you and I
- 4:01in a way that once we come to know him, that He wants to have
- 4:04continual union with us, continual relationship with us
- 4:08moment by moment. That's not on Sunday for a few
- 4:11hours, or on a Wednesday, or when you open your Bible in the
- 4:13morning. But He wants to be communing
- 4:15with you moment by moment. And so we keep ourselves in
- 4:19remembrance of God's presence 24/7.
- 4:22That's what God's desire is. That's the absolute picture of a
- 4:28perfect kind of humility when I realize I want to be with the
- 4:31Lord, that I realize I need to be with the Lord, that He wants
- 4:35me to be with him and I want to be with Him.
- 4:38And we have this community, him and I together, this
- 4:41relationship of love and friendship and closeness, that
- 4:44there isn't anything I want to do in my life that ignores him
- 4:48or puts him out of the picture. Now whenever we want to take our
- 4:52lives in a way and just have it our own way, so to speak, and
- 4:55think our own thoughts and our own ways, what's that an example
- 4:59of? That's an example of pride.
- 5:01And that's the thing that the Lord detests the most, a proud
- 5:05heart, an arrogant heart. And our minds are like that
- 5:08whenever we stop thinking about God.
- 5:11And we're not usually wired to think that way, but that's how
- 5:15God, God has created us so that we would need Him all the time.
- 5:20That's the way it was in the Garden before the fall.
- 5:23Adam and Eve were able to speak with God and they were able to
- 5:26hear God's voice back to them. They were aware of God's
- 5:29presence all the time. So this is the purpose of this
- 5:34book, to get us more geared in the sense of walking with the
- 5:38Lord. The Bible says walk in the
- 5:39Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
- 5:42So being with the Lord is a walk moment by moment, step by step,
- 5:47to abide in the vine, to be connected to the resource of
- 5:52Jesus Christ 24/7, abiding in him, receiving our nourishment,
- 5:58our spiritual strength, our food from Christ himself.
- 6:02He said, abide in me and I and you, and you'll bring forth much
- 6:06fruit, for without me you can do nothing.
- 6:10Walking, abiding, repenting, continual repentance, metanoia,
- 6:15the present verb tense of always submitting and repenting before
- 6:21the Lord. That's why the psalmist said,
- 6:25let the words in my mouth and the meditations of my heart.
- 6:28He was so in tune with God's presence that he was aware that
- 6:31God saw every thought and was able to determine every motive
- 6:36of the human heart and then to humble ourselves.
- 6:39We're told in James for us to humble ourselves under the
- 6:42mighty hand of God, that we're told in Romans to yield
- 6:45ourselves not as instruments of unrighteousness unto evil, but
- 6:51yield ourselves as members of righteousness unto God.
- 6:55It tells us in Romans chapter 12 we're to present ourselves a
- 6:58living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.
- 7:03It tells us in Psalm 139 to let God search your heart, to let
- 7:08Him try your thoughts, and to see if there's any wicked way in
- 7:11you and to lead you in the way everlasting.
- 7:14So this is the desire of this blessing that God wants to give
- 7:17you. When you read this book and you
- 7:19participate in it and you meditate upon it and you think
- 7:22about what it's teaching, it's preparing you to have a deeper
- 7:25walk with the Lord. That's the intention of the Holy
- 7:29Spirit as we study this book together.
- 7:32In verse 4 it says John to the seven churches which are in
- 7:35Asia, grace to you, and peace from him who is and who was and
- 7:41who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his
- 7:46throne. As we talked last week and we
- 7:49saw the map, John is speaking to the seven churches in Asia
- 7:54Minor. The number 7 reveals
- 7:56completeness or perfection. There was more churches than
- 7:59thus 7. But the concept of the writer
- 8:02and the Holy Spirit was that as we think about this seven, it
- 8:05refers to every church, just not the ones that are listed here.
- 8:09And this book, as we said last week, was written between 94 and
- 8:1396 AD during the reign of Domitian, who was an evil empire
- 8:18in Rome, who had tremendous influence around all the regions
- 8:22and who was very prone to persecute Christians.
- 8:25He was an idolater. He spent about $22 million in
- 8:29developing places of idolatry to worship false gods, and he
- 8:33wanted to get rid of everyone that proclaimed this message of
- 8:36Jesus Christ. He put John the Apostle out in
- 8:39the Isle of Patmos, which is about 37 miles off the coast of
- 8:43what is today modern Turkey. It's a island that you wouldn't
- 8:47want to go to. It's not a Paradise Island.
- 8:49It's not like going to Hawaii. It is a rocky terrain, very dry
- 8:53place, only about 10 miles long, about 6 miles wide.
- 8:56And they use this place to send people who needed to be
- 8:59isolated, people who were considered possible threats to
- 9:03the government of Rome. And of course, all Christians
- 9:06were considered that at that time.
- 9:08And so he tells us as he begins to write this book, and he's
- 9:12writing it to those who are going through persecution at
- 9:15this time, through this evil empire.
- 9:17He's telling them that grace and peace be given to them from him.
- 9:22Capital H, who is and who was and who is to come.
- 9:27The Hebrew word for God in the Old Testament is Yahweh.
- 9:30You remember God said to Moses. Moses says, who should I say
- 9:34sent me? He says, I am that I am.
- 9:38God is fully everlasting and eternally existing.
- 9:45He is the one true God, the everlasting Father, Son, and
- 9:50Holy Spirit. And He speaks in this fourth
- 9:53verse. Also, interesting comment here.
- 9:56He makes this word here regarding the seven spirits who
- 10:00are before His throne, a mystery verse, but again, referring to
- 10:05completeness, and a lot of the commentators see this as being
- 10:09the first of the sevens in the Book of Revelation.
- 10:12It's a key number, as I said, signifying God's perfection, His
- 10:16completeness, and it is believed that this is a reference to
- 10:19Isaiah Chapter 11, verse 2, where the Holy Spirit is
- 10:23described in this section of Scripture.
- 10:26They are called the Spirit of the Lord Prophet Isaiah Speaking
- 10:29of the Spirit coming upon the Messiah, upon Jesus.
- 10:33It says the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him.
- 10:37That's the first aspect of the completeness of the person.
- 10:40The Holy Spirit says the Spirit of wisdom, the second
- 10:45characteristic of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of
- 10:48understanding, The third aspect of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit
- 10:52of counsel, the 4th, the Spirit of power, the 5th, the Spirit of
- 10:57knowledge, the six, and the fear of the Lord. 7 the Holy Spirit
- 11:01and his complete fullness. And so he gives us greeting that
- 11:05goes out from the Father Himself, and eventually now we
- 11:09begin to speak of the person of the Holy Spirit.
- 11:11And the next few verses will speak on the person of the Son.
- 11:15So in the Book of Revelation we see very clearly manifest the
- 11:19Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit, which is
- 11:22very, very important to affirm and to believe and to understand
- 11:26and to know. And as he begins to give this
- 11:29greeting, the greeting then begins to go from the Father to
- 11:32the Holy Spirit. And as I said now as we begin to
- 11:35look at verse 5, to the Son and from Jesus Christ, the faithful
- 11:40witness, the first born from the dead, and the ruler over the
- 11:44kings of the earth, to Him who loved us and washed us from our
- 11:50sin in His own blood. We see in this section of
- 11:53Revelation the manifestation of Christ in His priestly office
- 11:59and His prophetical office and His kingly office.
- 12:02Jesus Christ is prophet, priest and king, and the three titles
- 12:07which will comfort these people who are reading this time, we're
- 12:10reading these letters or hearing these letters as they're read in
- 12:13their fellowships who are undergoing difficult
- 12:16persecution. It says he's the faithful
- 12:19witness. Now you think about Christ when
- 12:21he was on trial before Pontius Pilate, he witnessed a good
- 12:25confession. Pilate at the point of hearing
- 12:27the declarations and the accusations of Christ, said I
- 12:30find nothing wrong with this man.
- 12:32He's done nothing wrong. We should let him go and he
- 12:36basically, you know, washed his hands of the whole thing because
- 12:40there is no sin that could be pointed out in the person of
- 12:42Christ. What he says, what Jesus says is
- 12:45always true. You can count on Christ every
- 12:50day of your life. He's the one that gives you
- 12:53absolute reality and he's the one that's promised you.
- 12:57I am the way, I am the truth. I am the life.
- 13:01No man comes to the Father but through me.
- 13:04And we're living in a time, folks, where the world and the
- 13:07school systems are trying to invade your mind to tell you
- 13:11that Christ isn't the true one. Every assault of hell is against
- 13:16the forces of the Kingdom of God in these days that we live to
- 13:20dismantle and diminish the authority and lordship of Jesus
- 13:24Christ. There's a attack against the
- 13:27sovereignty and the holiness of God and the days that we live to
- 13:31try to dismantle your faith and mine.
- 13:34But Christ is the one that overcomes all the ideologies of
- 13:38man. The ones that conflict with the
- 13:41truth is always going to be present because that's the way
- 13:44it's been since the beginning of time when the devil said to Adam
- 13:48and Eve hath not God said trying to distort the truth of the word
- 13:52of God. But we can rest in the person of
- 13:55Christ because he is the faithful witness.
- 13:59People might laugh at you because you believe what he says
- 14:03and you follow what he teaches, but don't worry about that.
- 14:05Your reward will be great in the Kingdom of heaven when he says
- 14:09to you, well done, good and faithful servant, you want to be
- 14:12a faithful witness as well. This like Christ has been a
- 14:15faithful witness on our behalf. And then it says he's the first
- 14:19born from the dead. Interesting definition there.
- 14:22But this is reflecting on his resurrection.
- 14:25There was other people that Christ rose from the dead.
- 14:28Think of, you know, those in history that even didn't have to
- 14:32go through death, like Elijah and Enoch.
- 14:34But Christ is the first one to rise in glory from being once
- 14:39dead. All the others that rose at the
- 14:41time from the dead were returned back to their earthly life.
- 14:46But Christ was glorified, and the same life that he received
- 14:51through His resurrection is a life that He provides you and I,
- 14:54that we also receive. It's an everlasting life.
- 14:58It's a life that's given to us by the only life giver.
- 15:03And then it says that He's the ruler of the kings over the
- 15:06earth. What a comforting word this is
- 15:08to me this day and I hope to you.
- 15:11Our confidence, I hope, is not in the political rulers of this
- 15:15world. They all fail.
- 15:17They all pass on and they all eventually die, But this roller,
- 15:21the Lord Jesus, the King over all the earth, he's the
- 15:24sovereign King. He's the one that appoints and
- 15:27takes down according to his plan and be encouraged.
- 15:32As I said, the earthly leaders of this world are slowly fading
- 15:36away. That's a blessing.
- 15:38It's a blessing that that evil roller in roam that empire
- 15:42eventually was taken down. All those ungodly rulers that
- 15:47persecuted Christians were all eventually destroyed and they
- 15:51eventually died. Adolf Hitler, the one who
- 15:54created the persecution for the Jews, is dead.
- 15:58Stalin and Lenin are dead even though they created great havoc.
- 16:02God is merciful and history moves on.
- 16:04We look back in history to remember the horrible things
- 16:08that happened and to understand that with the wrong kind of
- 16:11leaders, terrible things can happen in this world.
- 16:14But Christ is the one who sits on the throne, so nothing's out
- 16:17of control, even though at times you might think it is.
- 16:20He's allowing these things to happen, to come to pass, so that
- 16:23one day he can soon return. This is the one Jesus who loved
- 16:27us and washed us from our sins in his own blood.
- 16:31Well, I'll tell you, it doesn't get any better than that, does
- 16:33it? The one who loved you and washed
- 16:37you in his own blood. I'd underline that circle with
- 16:43highlighted can be reminded of it frequently.
- 16:47Because no one could have done this for you but Him.
- 16:51To him that loved us and washed us from our sins in His own
- 16:56blood, the greatness of our Lord.
- 16:58Amen. No one but Jesus can do this for
- 17:05you and for me. We can't earn it, we don't
- 17:11deserve it, but He did it for us because He loves us.
- 17:18Perfect love. When you consider this and you
- 17:22think about this, this price that He paid for you, I'll tell
- 17:26you guys, I mean, I need to repent daily.
- 17:28Why does our minds forget so easily the sacrifice that Jesus
- 17:33paid for us? Why the times that we take it so
- 17:37lightly? This death of Christ died for
- 17:41you and me. It shows that our hearts are
- 17:44still hard at times and they still are indifferent.
- 17:49And I think that's a good verse to get on our face before the
- 17:51Lord at times privately and review it and then allow your
- 17:56heart to pour out to Him. Lord, I'm so thankful that you
- 17:58love me, that you do love me, and that You have shed your
- 18:03blood for me. You have washed me from all my
- 18:09sins, not just a few of them, that He's washed me from all my
- 18:14sins. In the picture of the cleansing
- 18:17of sin, the purification, the covering of the blood, there's
- 18:21no medium or product given upon the face of the earth through
- 18:25modern technology that can cover sin.
- 18:30Only the blood of Jesus can cover our sin.
- 18:33It breaks the bondages in our lives.
- 18:35It breaks the habits and the life besetting sins, the things
- 18:39that before we gave our hearts to Christ, the things that
- 18:42mastered us and controlled us, we were slaves to their control.
- 18:46And the good news is when the blood is shed and it's covering
- 18:50us of our sins, we are set free and we don't have to live the
- 18:54way we used to live. And some of us are deceived
- 18:57thinking that, well, yeah, I know I'm saved and I know you
- 19:00know, Christ did all this stuff, but I still have this desire and
- 19:03I still have this attitude, and I still have this want and all
- 19:06this. All I can encourage you is get
- 19:08on your face before God and proclaim the truth that Jesus
- 19:12has washed you from all your sins.
- 19:14And that means he's broken the bondage, the power for sin to
- 19:17reign and roll over your life. Let's go back to the Word and be
- 19:21reminded of what is true and turn your back away from the
- 19:24lives I know in your lives. As you're walking before the
- 19:27Lord, you're changing little by little.
- 19:30And I am too. And I look at my life back all
- 19:34those years I've lived so far, and I marvel that I'm not the
- 19:38same person I used to be. I'm sure you marvel when you
- 19:42look at your own life. I know I'm not perfect yet, but
- 19:46I know that I'm not what I used to be and I can't get over that.
- 19:50It blows my mind that I don't want to do this anymore.
- 19:53I don't want to do that anymore. I'm not interested in, you know,
- 19:56so many things that used to captivate me.
- 19:59And it's the work of God's Spirit.
- 20:01It's the work of His grace. It's the work of the power of
- 20:04His blood in my life and in yours.
- 20:07It washes us. It frees us from selfish hearts,
- 20:11from hot tempers, from lustful passions and self-centered
- 20:15living. That's what the blood does.
- 20:18When you look at someone and you say, boy, you know, they seem to
- 20:21have a servant heart. They care about people more than
- 20:23they care about themselves. But don't give that person the
- 20:26credit. Give Jesus a credit.
- 20:29He's the one through his blood that's done that in that
- 20:31person's heart. The person used to flip out and
- 20:34say all kind of angry things and had a temper that was always
- 20:38unruly and volatile. The person's life changes and
- 20:41now they're peaceful. They don't respond the same way.
- 20:44Why? Because of the blood of Jesus,
- 20:47the man or woman or teenager that used to find their kicks on
- 20:51pornographic imagery and sexual immorality and fornication and
- 20:55all the evil things that we're all capable of and many of us
- 20:59have committed. The blood washes us and frees us
- 21:03from lustful passions. The focus isn't upon you or me
- 21:08anymore of what I can get out of life or what's best for me, but
- 21:12what can I do to give my life away for the sake of Christ and
- 21:17the sake of others? Christ's blood transforms us,
- 21:20doesn't it? It changes us.
- 21:22And if you're still the same and you haven't changed and
- 21:25something's wrong, either you haven't really been converted
- 21:28yet and you haven't really repented, and you haven't been
- 21:30born again yet and you haven't been saved, or you have had some
- 21:34bad teaching and you understand all the promises that are yours
- 21:38in Christ Jesus. But Christ himself, He's the one
- 21:43that has loved you and has washed you from your sins in His
- 21:47blood. I remember that old song.
- 21:50Would you be free from your burden of sin?
- 21:55There's power in the blood, power in the blood.
- 22:00Would you do service for Jesus your king?
- 22:04There's wonderful power in the blood.
- 22:07There is power, power, wonder, working power in the precious
- 22:14blood of the lamb. There is.
- 22:18There's power, wonder, working power in the blood of the lamb.
- 22:24Really, really powerful guys. In verse 6 it says, and he's
- 22:29made us kings and priests to his God and Father, to him be glory
- 22:35and dominion forever and ever, Amen.
- 22:38Do you know today that we are kings and priests of the most
- 22:41high God? And He's made us this way so
- 22:46that you can represent Him to others, so that they can come
- 22:51and get healing from their brokenness and their ruined
- 22:54lives. That people you run into who
- 22:56know they're sick and need a physician will come to you to
- 23:01find out about the Savior so He can cleanse them and heal them
- 23:07and deliver them and save them, just like He's saved and healed
- 23:11and delivered you. Amen.
- 23:14The function of the priestly office in the Old Testament was
- 23:18a mediator role where the Old Testament Jews had to deal with
- 23:23a priest who went in and made intercession for them and made
- 23:28atonement on the ark for their sins.
- 23:31In Hebrews chapter 10/19, though it says Now we having boldness,
- 23:35brethren, by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which
- 23:40is consecrated through the veil, that is to say, his flesh, we
- 23:43can enter in boldly by the blood of Jesus.
- 23:49We are digging into the Book of Revelation here on Living Waters
- 23:52of Grace. Pastor Clark is tackling this
- 23:55challenging book as we try to discern the messages that are
- 23:59within its pages. There's so much imagery, and at
- 24:03times you're not always sure what's literal and what's
- 24:06metaphorical. At one point, there's a
- 24:08reference to an adulterous woman riding on a beast.
- 24:13And as someone else mentioned, at one point it almost sounds
- 24:16like a rodeo from hell. And in actuality it kind of is.
- 24:21You learn about the downfall and demise of a sinful and
- 24:24rebellious world, falling down in worship to someone who is the
- 24:29anti hero, the enemy, Satan working his insidious ways into
- 24:36the minds of fallen people. It's sad and it's heartbreaking,
- 24:40but it's a classic story of good versus evil.
- 24:45Thankfully, we know how this story ends.
- 24:48Jesus wins, Jesus reigns, and evil is conquered once and for
- 24:55all. We pray and trust you've
- 24:57received Jesus as your savior. But if you haven't, don't wait
- 25:02until the events in Revelation become what's happening on the
- 25:06streets. None of us wants you to be there
- 25:09at that time. Instead, we'd love for you to be
- 25:13with us in heaven as we celebrate the marriage supper
- 25:17with Jesus as his bridegroom. To get a better understanding of
- 25:23where we are in the Book of Revelation, to listen to any
- 25:26messages before or after this one, you can find them at our
- 25:31website, calvarychapelonline.com.
- 25:35That's it for today's edition, but we hope you'll want to hear
- 25:38Pastor Clark teach more from the Book of Revelation.
- 25:42It can be exciting to think about the future for believers,
- 25:46but it can feel a bit harrowing for those who don't believe.
- 25:49Come here more next time on Living Waters of Grace.
