Latest / Deadly Intentions / Golden State Killer: The Cop Who Evaded Capture for 44 Years
Transcript
- 0:00He starts communicating with the on individuals he's
- 0:02traumatizing. He's communicating with the
- 0:05officers like mocking and taunting.
- 0:07He had a 44 year run of evading capture.
- 0:10How many? Years 44.
- 0:11He was someone who had institutional knowledge and was
- 0:14able to exploit the limits of what was essentially an analogue
- 0:18world. He was sentenced in 2020 and but
- 0:24his era spanned from let's say the mid 1970s through the mid
- 0:281980s and over the course of that time period he was
- 0:32responsible for at least 13 on the livings, 13 kidnappings, 50
- 0:39assaults on women of a was that one time sexual nature.
- 0:44Sexual How many sexuals? Over 50 it was over 50 / 50.
- 0:48There was a lot of people that he just did the sexual.
- 0:51Yeah, well, because. But didn't kill.
- 0:53Well, it's a progression for these guys.
- 0:54At the Genesis it was 120 break insurance and so did.
- 1:00Well, first of all, this guy lived in a relatively rural
- 1:03community called Visalia back in the 1970s.
- 1:05I checked the population that according to the census 25,000
- 1:09people. Isn't a real big farm area.
- 1:11It's Agri business and livestock and so he.
- 1:16And he's a cop up in that area. Well, that was the interesting
- 1:18thing about this gentleman, this scumbag, excuse me.
- 1:21He was a for the bulk of for some of the much of the activity
- 1:25he engaged in. It was he was a police officer
- 1:29and former military comes back after he served, went to
- 1:34college, got a degree, criminal justice became a police officer.
- 1:37He was in the Navy actually becomes an issue later on it
- 1:39because one of his signatures was the way he would tie the
- 1:41knots. And anybody that's been through
- 1:44the Navy knows you go through boot camp because they're not
- 1:46TIE knots. Right, right.
- 1:47More so than any form of the military.
- 1:48The Navy is is is where the knots go.
- 1:50Where the knots come, Yeah. And so.
- 1:52But at the beginning he was, as in the case of the scumbag we
- 1:58profiled last week. The Gilgo.
- 2:00Another one of these individuals who have this compulsive need
- 2:04for psychological dominance, psychological control and
- 2:10psychological terror, essentially.
- 2:13Power. Well, it's more he was just like
- 2:16to illustrate at the beginning he was doing a random series of
- 2:21break insurance. So the Golden State Killer
- 2:23starts out Johnny Break in, Johnny Break in, Johnny Break in
- 2:26guy. He's he's a police officer on
- 2:29the burglary units. Oh, so it's like shooting fish
- 2:33out, for lack of a better term, like fishing.
- 2:34He knows where. He knows all the tricks of the
- 2:37trade, who they're investigating.
- 2:39It's the stereotypical you know, the fireman that starts fires.
- 2:42Right, right. The the arsonist.
- 2:43The arsonist, OK. And so now he didn't live in the
- 2:46area in which he targeted. He lived about 10 miles, 15
- 2:49miles out. So he was on a police force for
- 2:52the Exeter and but he was targeting the.
- 2:54The county, Yeah. And so.
- 2:57So he's like a city guy and, and, and he goes into the county
- 3:00area like where the sheriff may be.
- 3:01These are all small towns at the time, like today.
- 3:03It's much more developed back then.
- 3:04It's just little agriculture. It was just maybe the next
- 3:06little city over 10. 15 miles over and so he he's doing a like
- 3:12so over the course of the first couple of years he does 120 some
- 3:14odd break insurance. Now, of course, being a police
- 3:16officer who's familiar with burglaries.
- 3:19Because you're in the burglary unit.
- 3:20Yeah, he knows the tools of the trade.
- 3:22He knows the limits of the authority's ability with respect
- 3:27to investigations. He knows the evidence collection
- 3:29protocols. He understands the, you know,
- 3:32investigatory protocols. He knows the patrol patterns.
- 3:35He knows the shift changes. So he was able to capitalize on
- 3:40that institutional knowledge. Like almost a borderline expert
- 3:43of I mean like within the where he the world he's dabbling in,
- 3:47he would be considered like a an.
- 3:48Expert. Yes, Sir.
- 3:49And he'd be called. He'd be called.
- 3:50He'd be competent to testify in court.
- 3:53As a burglary. Expert as a burglary expert,
- 3:55yes. And so he would come.
- 3:56So now he, although he was compulsive, he was organized in
- 4:02the sense that he would study the houses, make sure he'd get
- 4:07the time schedule of everybody, he'd break into the home and but
- 4:10he wasn't really taking anything of value.
- 4:12And this is where you see the psychological sickness forming.
- 4:15What he was doing was essentially like ransacking
- 4:19through. And initially, he was targeting
- 4:20primarily women, ransacking the women's undergarments or like,
- 4:27taking all their clothes, throw them in a pile and taking a big
- 4:30picture of like, Kool-aid and just throwing it all on her, her
- 4:33clothes, like, you know, just like.
- 4:34So he wasn't the degenerate burglar that's in there looking
- 4:36for jewelry cash. He's in there doing this
- 4:39tormenting kind of dominance or some type of sick, you know, of,
- 4:46of like showing dominance over a, a, a woman to, to create
- 4:50fear. A derive He derives a sense of a
- 4:53thrill knowing that he's You know when someone breaks into
- 4:56your home. Oh, you're violated.
- 4:58You're violated, Yeah. And particularly for now,
- 4:59someone breaks into your home and, you know, from a woman's
- 5:01perspective and going through all his undergarments and going,
- 5:04Yeah, like that's a real. And so he was able.
- 5:07He got. The guy that's breaking in and
- 5:08grabbing your watch is way different than the guy that's
- 5:10just come in your pants and, and, and doing that.
- 5:13That's a whole different. Monster.
- 5:14Not just that though, but he would also.
- 5:16Not only would he do the undergarment thing, but he would
- 5:18also. What he would take would be
- 5:21things of sentimental value. And so the photograph of the one
- 5:26photograph you have of your grandparents when they were
- 5:28young and happy and beautiful like you, it's irreplaceable,
- 5:31like the sentimental value that can't be replaced.
- 5:34Well, he'd take that. Which was even more sick.
- 5:37He would take the photos of the family or like, you know, close
- 5:41family. Things that have no value but
- 5:43are actually invaluable. Invaluable.
- 5:44That's right. Or if there was a wedding ring
- 5:46there, he'd take the wedding ring.
- 5:47Or if she has like a beautiful set of earrings, he'd take just
- 5:50one of them. Not even both.
- 5:52Both. Yes, exactly that.
- 5:53Even makes it more. Yes, it's demented, right?
- 5:57Yeah. And so then this went on for the
- 5:59better. Part 120 of them. 120 of them,
- 6:02you know, he and he, of course, he, by that point he was already
- 6:05labeled. They called him the Visalia
- 6:06Ransacker. But that's all he had on his tap
- 6:09was just 120 burglaries. Yeah, at this, at this point,
- 6:12Yeah, at this point. He had an escalator.
- 6:14He was the Vesalia Ransacker Sacker.
- 6:16Yeah, because far better than the Golden State.
- 6:18Killer Yeah, yeah, because it's still primarily ransacking,
- 6:21right? And so I mean, you've done time
- 6:23and you know that the amount of time you're going to get for
- 6:26being a ransacker compared to the amount of time you're going
- 6:28to get from 713 undefs on your plate is night and day.
- 6:32One of them might be 15 months, the only one might be alive in
- 6:36prison. And definitely.
- 6:37Yeah, certainly. And he probably because the
- 6:39media gave him a little title, maybe even boasted his sickness
- 6:44even more that now that he was kind of a known, you know, like
- 6:47the Ransack. Yeah, as as we move in, as we
- 6:50progress into the escalatory phase, that's where he starts
- 6:55diving into this side of his cycle nonsense because the.
- 6:58Darker. Yeah, the darker side, because
- 7:00he's going to start communicating with the media, He
- 7:02starts communicating with the an individual he's traumatizing.
- 7:05He's communicating with the officers like mocking and
- 7:09taunting. And little do they know that
- 7:11that's one of their own indirectly, I mean, another
- 7:13person in Leo. With respect to the the
- 7:15Ransackers, some of the more astute officers started getting
- 7:20a little suspicious because it's one thing for a guy to get lucky
- 7:22breaks in and he takes OK, but he breaks in, but he didn't
- 7:24steal anything. But on the other hand, it's
- 7:29after a year of these, you know, dozens and hundreds, at this
- 7:33point it's over 100. But at the, you know, once
- 7:35you're a few dozen into these things and you're like this same
- 7:38guy and how's he not leaving behind any evidence?
- 7:41No fibers, no DNA, no he remember.
- 7:44The 1970s era, so the the forensic capacity was very
- 7:48different. But this is like another guy
- 7:49where technology kind of like our one last week, the go go guy
- 7:53where technology kind of eventually caught up to yes.
- 7:56But at that point that that was his, you know, later on the
- 7:59media because he had a 44 year run of evading capture.
- 8:02How many years? 44.
- 8:05Now he's, he went dormant in 1986.
- 8:08He kept traumatizing to people making these taunting phone
- 8:10calls from 91 to 2001. But there's that 44 year period
- 8:15without having gotten apprehended.
- 8:17Well, he was, you know, they're, they're calling him a criminal
- 8:19mastermind. No, he was someone who had
- 8:21institutional knowledge and was able to exploit the limits of
- 8:26what was essentially an analogue world.
- 8:27Exactly. And the analog world far
- 8:30different than the digital. World.
- 8:31Very, very. Just like our our our boy Rex
- 8:33from last week where the cellular triangulation and the
- 8:38Geo mapping, you know, caught up.
- 8:40Ultimately caught up and that's. What ultimately, other than the
- 8:42Let me see if I can remember correctly, other than the fact
- 8:45that you drove a green Chevy Avalanche, remember that was
- 8:49probably within not to go back from last week, but that was
- 8:52probably the one tip that really let them hyper focus on because
- 8:57it was such an oddball, a green Chevy Avalanche.
- 9:00Yes, and. Talking about last week with
- 9:03Rex. Yes.
- 9:03And then, of course, New York had a database that allowed the
- 9:06authorities to pull up well, who owned.
- 9:08They can just start drilling down.
- 9:09On it, That's right. And so with respect to this guy,
- 9:11though, he wasn't leaving behind any evidence.
- 9:15And so somebody office, some of the detectives were like, you
- 9:17know, this may have the hallmarks of somebody who may
- 9:20potentially be a cop. So somebody at one time early on
- 9:26identified that like there, there that there was, there was
- 9:29a detective or somebody that said, hey, this might be in it
- 9:31one of our own. Yes.
- 9:33No, not obviously. The likelihood of it being
- 9:35someone in your own department is going to be modest.
- 9:37Somebody with our knowledge. Someone with the prior
- 9:39background in law enforcement because he's continuously
- 9:43engaging in these break insurance and not leaving any
- 9:46evidence behind. There were other instances where
- 9:49he was trying to break into people's homes.
- 9:50Civilians saw him. So like, hey, hey, what's going
- 9:53on? So the guy would just take off
- 9:54running. Well, they get like witness
- 9:56descriptions, vague of course, but they were to say like, you
- 9:58know what? Like it's a white guy.
- 10:00And we started yelling and next thing you know, he hit two or
- 10:03three fences and was gone. Well, that means it's not an
- 10:07African American, it's not a Hispanic.
- 10:09It's. Not an Asian, it's not an.
- 10:10Overweight guy. It's not someone who's older.
- 10:12In shape, white guy. In shape white.
- 10:14And you can start drilling down here.
- 10:15That's right. So you start building a profile
- 10:17saying, look, you know what? Someone who has potentially some
- 10:19kind of a law enforcement or military background.
- 10:22Someone who is in physical shape.
- 10:24Athletic. Relatively good shape where you
- 10:26can start hitting these fences and take off.
- 10:28This was just the burglary side of it, correct?
- 10:30Yes, this is the Visalia Ransacker.
- 10:32So the Ransacker, I don't know if it ran its course or not
- 10:37Pete, but eventually things with with Joseph escalated where man,
- 10:43maybe break it into, you know, this middle-aged 3538 year old
- 10:47hot single woman house isn't good enough.
- 10:50Maybe they're kind of on to me a little bit and then can only
- 10:54feed my ego so much. I got to take it to the next.
- 10:56Level. He takes it to the next level.
- 10:58He moves beyond ransacking through the under undergarment
- 11:01drawer to where now he starts actually physically assaulting
- 11:05to women. So when you're a ransacker, you
- 11:08don't want to be caught, you don't have any contact.
- 11:10Nobody in the house even is. Don't want to touch nobody.
- 11:12You're just now you're putting hands on.
- 11:14People and so now similar circumstance, he would case out
- 11:17the house, make sure that she lived by herself.
- 11:20He would he would often times go in, check out everything, make
- 11:25sure everything was fine, leave like the window unlocked.
- 11:27That way when she's home, he's able to.
- 11:29So like almost he pre scouted. With.
- 11:32Boots on the ground. Then of course, he,
- 11:34unfortunately, he would get in, you know, assault the woman,
- 11:38right? And over the course of the next
- 11:40three-year period, he had over 50 of these.
- 11:43So 150 ransacking. Over 100 ransacking.
- 11:46Yeah, I'm sorry, Over 100 ransacking, then that escalates
- 11:49to where we are now, and that's sexual assaulting women to the
- 11:53tune of over. 50. And so and but never caught.
- 11:59No. And now the circumstances start
- 12:01escalating because he's in the midst of one of these assaults,
- 12:08assaults he was targeting. Not only is the guy a sicko, but
- 12:14he's also at this point he was targeting a teenage girl.
- 12:17So now, now you got. Minors involved.
- 12:20Right now, you're now. Now you're real sick.
- 12:23Of now you're real, I mean not. That any of it's great but now
- 12:26he's. Really gone into some place very
- 12:29dark, right? And the individual the household
- 12:32was, the family name was Snelling.
- 12:36Snelling. Yes.
- 12:37And so he breaks into the home. The father's there.
- 12:43He's targeting the child. Or the teenage.
- 12:46Teenage girl, she wakes up, he's on top of her with a knife at
- 12:52her throat, says hey you're coming with me.
- 12:54Shows her his firearm. She gets up, she's leaving with
- 12:59the man. She he says if you scream or
- 13:00anything I'm going to unalive you.
- 13:02Of course you know the 15 year old girl's going to do what she
- 13:05tells while he's literally leaving with her.
- 13:07Like walking across the lawn with this guy's daughter.
- 13:10The father wakes up, gets up, goes and checks see what's going
- 13:15on. Like something ain't right.
- 13:17He goes outside and he sees the man walking away with his
- 13:19daughter. So he starts yelling and going,
- 13:21hey, get back. You know, he's obviously.
- 13:24Absolutely. And gripped with panic and
- 13:26infuriated scumbag, D'Angelo turns around and fires off a
- 13:32couple shots. At Pops.
- 13:35Remember, D'angelo's a police officer.
- 13:36He's not some knucklehead on the street.
- 13:38Just. He probably got pretty good name
- 13:39two shots marksmen. You know.
- 13:42On our. Lives through the lungs on one
- 13:44and through the heart of the other.
- 13:45So that guy dad didn't have a. Chance Dad didn't have a chance,
- 13:48so now it escalates from. From from sniffing panties and
- 13:52ransacking. So now breaking into a home,
- 13:55actually kidnapping. A child.
- 13:57A teenager. A teenager girl obviously
- 13:59contemplating assaulting her right and in the midst of this,
- 14:04analyze the father. Right.
- 14:06Takes her dad out. Takes the dad out.
- 14:07And so like, you know, shit's getting real.
- 14:10Now, yeah, shit. Down got real.
- 14:12Yeah, and keep him in the time to think This, this is a cop
- 14:14doing. All right right yeah this isn't
- 14:16you know Johnny heroin addict that's trying to get a fix,
- 14:19trying to steal this is this is a very sophisticated man that
- 14:23knows the the systems and at this point has you know 100 plus
- 14:27ransacking 50 plus sexual assaults.
- 14:30He. Hadn't hit the 50 number he was
- 14:32in the process. But he put on his way to.
- 14:33That on his way to. And on his way to the assaults
- 14:36he now has, he's now taking a person's life, a father's life,
- 14:41who's trying to protect his daughter.
- 14:43So shit's got real. And then of course, that's
- 14:45warded his ability to take off with the kid.
- 14:47So he. Left the kid there.
- 14:50Starts stocking her, kicked her in the face a few times, punched
- 14:53her, left her like just beat her for.
- 14:57But she made it. Oh yes, she's OK, so she made
- 14:59it. But he that thwarted what he
- 15:01wanted to do. Which was take her to probably
- 15:03another place that obviously changes the complexion of
- 15:06everything, right? From a law enforcement
- 15:08perspective. It's not the guy going in
- 15:10sniffing panties right? Or peeping Tom kind of a
- 15:12situation. And at this point, Pete, are we
- 15:15still behind on are we still analog in the analog world where
- 15:19they can't, you know, at this particular time when he offs the
- 15:23dad and it's with the girl have has technology caught up where
- 15:27you can analyze fibers yet or? No, still kind of at this point.
- 15:30Yeah. Yeah, this is still in the mid
- 15:311970s. Right.
- 15:32So we're still in the. Like the analog world, which is
- 15:36essentially. That's what we'll call it, the
- 15:38analog world, which is essentially a world where you
- 15:40don't leave a digital footprint on a phone and they don't really
- 15:44have the ability to check DNA. All right, so.
- 15:46He analyzed Mr. Snelling and. She that that he he assaults
- 15:51beats up the team. Yes.
- 15:53And so now, of course, it's all hands on deck from the law
- 15:55enforcement community. He is a officer from the
- 15:59neighboring city over. And so now you're going to start
- 16:01getting like cross collaborate. We're going to need more of your
- 16:03guys because they start the Visalia Police Department, start
- 16:05putting stakeouts, try to get a sense of OK, well, where's he
- 16:09going to hit next? And that's one another one of
- 16:12the details that had caused them to suspect that at one point
- 16:15they had stakeouts around the city and the Bransacker would
- 16:18strike, but he always missed. He always miss his municipality.
- 16:23The stakeouts area, so if we got these three blocks, we're going
- 16:26to watch and he the 4th. Block because he knew.
- 16:28He knew where they were, he knew where the stakeouts were, so he
- 16:31never, no matter how random, they would do the.
- 16:33Stakeouts. The ransacker would miss the
- 16:36stakeouts. Yeah.
- 16:37And so the officer. And there probably comes, there
- 16:39probably comes a, a point in police work where in their mind
- 16:45and you, you, you obviously know more about this than me, but in
- 16:48their mind, they're like, OK, no way it's cop.
- 16:50No way it's a cop. No way it's a cop, no way it's a
- 16:53cop. This is a bad guy.
- 16:54And then it probably flips to when they there's so many, like
- 16:57you said, I think it was it yet last episode when you said
- 16:59there's no, there's no such thing as circumstantial
- 17:01evidence. Oh, no, no, no, they they go
- 17:04from the There's no such thing as a coincidence.
- 17:06So it goes from like, OK, there's no way this is a cop.
- 17:09There's no way this one of ours too.
- 17:11They probably flip to say. Yeah, after you do 10152025
- 17:16burglaries and there's no evidence like how's he able?
- 17:19To not and then they're like, well, this isn't coincidence
- 17:22too. Yeah, that's at some point now
- 17:23the probabilities start stacking so high where it's like not
- 17:26leaving any evidence behind on the one hand.
- 17:28And then he's keeps hitting these strikes, but he's outside
- 17:32of the the stakeout areas. It's like like nobody can get
- 17:35that lucky. You can't just keep throwing
- 17:37sevens. No.
- 17:37And so you got to crap out. At some point, you certainly and
- 17:40so. You big crap player.
- 17:41No, I watch it and I play it. If I have a guy that knows what
- 17:44he's doing, I'll play with him. But it's an it's an amazing
- 17:47game. Sure.
- 17:48Oh no, I studied. I meant the probability.
- 17:50But no, I don't. No, no, I heard that
- 17:53statistically in the casino, it's your best odds if you know
- 17:56how to play. Yes, I, I it's what I heard,
- 17:59yeah. That's the one where the house
- 18:00has the least. Advantage.
- 18:02Statistical edge. Right, so we got we got the guys
- 18:06has the Ransacker Ransacker has escalated to now doing.
- 18:10Sexual assaults and neon arriving of Mr. Snelling.
- 18:13Obviously the police treat the situation much more seriously
- 18:15and they start having the stakeouts throughout the city.
- 18:19And one of the undercover detectives, d'angelo's on his
- 18:25way to do another break in and a detective spots someone he
- 18:30considers nobody suspicious so he gets out of the car.
- 18:33Like, hey, freeze when he hits him with a flashlight, the guy's
- 18:38like, hey, you know the the D Angelo.
- 18:40OK, yeah, yeah, I surrender. And so when he gives the I
- 18:44surrender, he pulls out his firearm and.
- 18:46Shoots another officer. He shoots at the officer.
- 18:50He doesn't hit the officer, he hits the flashlight man.
- 18:56But now, of course, the officer has to take cover to protect
- 18:59himself. The Angelo's gone.
- 19:01Yeah, gone. And so.
- 19:03But now of course, they have a physical description, right?
- 19:07Because he didn't have the mask on or anything, so did he
- 19:09actually be able to give? More detail.
- 19:11Yes. So he's able to say, OK, this is
- 19:13the physical description. And the detective made the
- 19:16comment saying, you know, I've seen that guy somewhere before.
- 19:20He's a police officer from the neighboring city.
- 19:21Right. They're drilling down, aren't
- 19:23they, Pete? And so now, of course, D Angelo
- 19:26realizes this is man. Keep in mind this incident with
- 19:29the detective is only three months after the Snelling
- 19:32incident. So at this point, he's blown up
- 19:34the spot. So D'Angelo at this point, is he
- 19:36Like, I got to back this thing way down?
- 19:37No, what he does is he moves. He moves from the Visalia area
- 19:41up by Sacramento. And for people who don't
- 19:44understand California's geography really quick, Visalia
- 19:46is in the San Joaquin Valley agricultural Agri business type
- 19:50of town, located about midway between Los Angeles and San
- 19:54Francisco couple, 100 miles north of LA.
- 19:56People don't realize how geographically big California,
- 19:58oh, it's enormous. Enormous.
- 20:00Yeah. So he then moves probably, what,
- 20:03400 miles 02? 150 miles up to two. 150 miles
- 20:06north. North to Sacramento area.
- 20:07Now, of course, we're talking back in the 1970s.
- 20:10So this is, you know, rural enough to remember the old
- 20:12library card catalog systems. Well, this is the the police
- 20:15detective files, right? They.
- 20:18Just can't get on their computer.
- 20:19Yeah, the authorities in, you know, San Joaquin Valley aren't
- 20:23going to be able to just access Sacramento law enforcement
- 20:25databases. No, this is when detectives had
- 20:27to pick up the phone, get another guy on the phone, start
- 20:30comparing notes, maybe drive up there.
- 20:32Yeah, sure. That's why that's.
- 20:33How it did now? Was he able to get a police job?
- 20:35Yes, he transferred as a police officer from the Exeter Police
- 20:39Police Department over to Auburn.
- 20:40Auburn. So now he's up in the Sacramento
- 20:42area and this is where he starts.
- 20:45He goes on his three-year run with 50 plus assaults, focusing
- 20:54primarily on, like with the EE, Yeah, East Sacramento area,
- 20:59which at the time was like unincorporated territory.
- 21:02Now is that is that out of his patrol area?
- 21:04Yes. Yes.
- 21:05He broadens his area from East Sacramento as far down as like
- 21:10Stockton, which is like 50 miles away and down now got to like
- 21:14Modesto maybe 6570 miles away. That's his jam right now.
- 21:17So he's gone from ransacking to the close call with Snelling to
- 21:21the close call with the police officer to now he's relocated
- 21:26250 miles away. And now he's concentrating on,
- 21:30on, on the assaults on women. Yes, and but the same MO
- 21:34essentially because he has, you know the break in the the
- 21:36surveillance at a home, the the pre the break in the preliminary
- 21:39break in to get everything situated and then he executed.
- 21:44His assault, that's probably one of the reasons why he stayed at
- 21:46large for so long, because it wasn't.
- 21:48It wasn't it wasn't like, OK, I'm just really horny right now
- 21:52and I want to go do this. It was calculated.
- 21:54Whereas a lot of the people that are in this arena, they just see
- 21:57a chick and they just are, you know, overcome with, you know.
- 22:00And so this guy, because he because he bird dogged it and
- 22:04watched it from a farm, probably made him way more undetectable
- 22:07because it was calculated more so than impulse.
- 22:09Yeah, boy, he wasn't opportunistic, right?
- 22:13Yeah, he was much more calculated.
- 22:15But you made the statement about being horny really doesn't have
- 22:18anything to do with is this demented compulsion necessary to
- 22:23physically dominate the woman, Control, humiliate.
- 22:27These are psychologically driven.
- 22:28And if you look at all three aspects of it, Pete, you go from
- 22:32ransacking, which is a version of what you just said, having
- 22:36dominance and power over somebody.
- 22:38And terrorizing. And terrorizing to sexually
- 22:41assaulting and, and, and it that's the same, but escalated.
- 22:45And then you go to unaliving people and and then that is the
- 22:48ultimate. Well, at this point he hasn't.
- 22:50He's not going out looking to unalive, right?
- 22:53It may be incidental to his other conduct.
- 22:56Within these six people. Sick people's mind, Pete, Do
- 22:59they escalate it? Like, OK, ransacking is this
- 23:02little circle and kind of bored there.
- 23:05Let's go to having physical contact with them.
- 23:07For them, they. And OK.
- 23:09They need the thrill. And then I got to take it to the
- 23:11next level because it's not about sex or anything like that.
- 23:13It's about my sick, demented, controlling mind.
- 23:18And so now I have to take it to the to the third phase.
- 23:21Which is, you know, the FBI has done psychological analysis of
- 23:25these guys for her for decades. And so there is a manual
- 23:30essentially which breaks down whether they're organized,
- 23:33disorganized, and the motivations are generally the
- 23:37same. It's all going to be
- 23:38controllable, terror dominant, that kind of a thing.
- 23:40And how they express it is different.
- 23:43Like the signatures are case specific and we're going to get
- 23:49into one of them because it's really what distinguished sickle
- 23:52hear from other guys. But so he's in the midst of this
- 23:55fifty person run and naturally he's getting media coverage.
- 23:58People are saying, hey, look, what's going?
- 23:59This was and he was targeting single women.
- 24:01So we've gone from ransacking, which is over 100, to now we're
- 24:05going to. In the midst of the 50 women
- 24:07run. Right in the midst of and now
- 24:09we're in the midst of the 50 women run that have been
- 24:11assaulted. And yes, and media of course, is
- 24:13now covering this. Have they named him yet because
- 24:16he was the Ransacker when he was the Ransacker?
- 24:18Is this just? He's the east area graper.
- 24:22And he probably loves the fact that when he gets his attention
- 24:27media wise, that probably is part of.
- 24:29This business because that that feeds into their the the fantasy
- 24:33that they can construct for themselves.
- 24:35Or the validation of how they're a bad guy.
- 24:37Or. You know, later, later on as it
- 24:38progresses, like in the guy from last week, you see how he's
- 24:41taunting to family members. Right, right.
- 24:43Well, how does he hasn't gotten to the taunting part yet?
- 24:45Like that's a further. Down, but it's happening.
- 24:47It's coming. It's coming, it's coming.
- 24:49And so media coverage about him targeting single women.
- 24:52So he pivots and starts targeting couples.
- 24:56Oh. Because single women now are
- 24:59taking precautions. Right, single women are, you
- 25:02know, taking defence courses maybe.
- 25:04And they're calling them, you know, calling them a coward.
- 25:09Oh, you know, like these guys are coward.
- 25:11So the media now is kind of switched the narrative, whereas
- 25:14you're no longer a serial greatest, you know, you are now
- 25:18kind of a a coward, yeah, for picking on single women.
- 25:22So that probably, you know, triggers, right, Trick.
- 25:25There you go, triggers. Him.
- 25:26Yeah, triggers him, and so now he pivots where he starts.
- 25:29Oh, you want to call me a coward?
- 25:31All right, well, let me do this. Now and of course, but the same
- 25:34the same, you know, with the break in the preliminary goes in
- 25:36make sure everything is fine. How's he going to, he scans out,
- 25:39you know, schematics of the house, leaves the window open,
- 25:41leaves the back door open and he would find the firearms that
- 25:44would be in the house belonging to the man and remove the
- 25:47bullets. Wow that's even crazier.
- 25:52He'd pre break in see if they had any firearms.
- 25:55If they did, he wouldn't take them because you know, your
- 25:58husband would know that his pistol was gone, but your
- 26:01husband doesn't know if your pistols been taking the bullet.
- 26:04Like like, you know, I could I have a, a gun collection, you
- 26:09know, obviously it it, it, but I would not know.
- 26:14I just look at it and it's there.
- 26:16I wouldn't know if somebody took the bullets out, but I would
- 26:19know if it was gone. But I just look at it.
- 26:21I don't go and check it every time.
- 26:22Again, remember, this is the 1970s.
- 26:23So the city guy's got a revolver, right?
- 26:25So he, he just. He sees a revolver there.
- 26:27He sees a revolver next to his bed or under his pillow or
- 26:30whatever he kept there, and he's naturally assuming that the.
- 26:33Yeah. You don't go check it.
- 26:35And so the husband and wife, or the boyfriend girlfriend, they
- 26:38leave the house. He breaks in, he's got a
- 26:40shotgun. They return home.
- 26:44Now he confronts them. Now he has to neutralize the
- 26:48man. Yeah, that's just first thing.
- 26:50And So what he would do is, you know, get the guy laid down,
- 26:53he'd bring the, the, the ripe the ropes there or the wires,
- 26:57whatever he would use to secure it.
- 27:00So he'd tie the guy. Up.
- 27:01He wouldn't tie him up. He'd have to grow tie him up
- 27:04because he's got to hold the shotgun on them, so he holds the
- 27:06weapon on them. Her tied him up, then he ties
- 27:10her up because he can physically overpower her.
- 27:12So now he ties her up. Then he goes back and.
- 27:15And does the make sure the the knots are Mack daddy on old boy
- 27:18and. Then he has a specific specific
- 27:19style of knot called diamond knot.
- 27:22So he used a diamond knot that he had learned in the military.
- 27:25So he did. He goes through the his service,
- 27:27his experience with knots in the Navy.
- 27:29And so he's just a specific knot style to secure.
- 27:33So he's like, does the guy's feet?
- 27:35Does the guy's hands? So the guy is now disabled.
- 27:37Incapacitated. Locked.
- 27:38You know, you lay them on the ground, put the blindfold on
- 27:41them, takes a rag, stuff it in the guy's mouth.
- 27:43I can't scream, I can't do nothing.
- 27:46And he when, when he would, he'd take a stack of plates or
- 27:52teacups and he would set it on the guy's back and he'd tell him
- 27:59those plates fall. I hear those plates fall and
- 28:01crash. That's his trip wire, you and
- 28:04her. So the guy is just sitting there
- 28:05just absolutely trying to be. Balance.
- 28:08He's not moving. He can't move it because he's
- 28:09terrified. Terrified that if you know if
- 28:11the plates. Fall outs, we're all in trouble.
- 28:13We're all in trouble. So he just, he's just completely
- 28:15immobilized. And while he's there trying not
- 28:18to move, to knock off the plates, Scumbag takes the
- 28:21girlfriend or the wife into the living room and spends the next
- 28:24two hours assaulting her. And sometimes it'd be 3 hours.
- 28:27Sometimes it's for the poor guys on the I mean, it's terrible all
- 28:29the way around. And what was bad is like in the
- 28:32midst of that, like he'd take a break, go and get something to
- 28:35eat, go in the kitchen, get give himself a beer, talk to the guy
- 28:39like, yeah, your girl likes this, your girl likes that.
- 28:42And like, just like, and the guy's like, you can't move.
- 28:45He's got blindfold. I mean this is next level stuff.
- 28:48Oh yeah, terrible. This is neck I I I'm so glad
- 28:51we're talking about it because I've never heard about this and
- 28:54it's one of the most it's. Egregious.
- 28:55It's as egregious as I've heard. Yeah, it's, I mean.
- 28:58Why it didn't get more just get more coverage.
- 29:00I'm glad we're talking about it to get the word out, but my God,
- 29:03this is. Bad.
- 29:04Yeah, he literally, and like on one of the one of the guys, he
- 29:08had him down on the ground and he's like, hey, look, after I'm
- 29:10done here, I'm going to go visit Carol.
- 29:12Well, Carol's his mother like and he knew the mom's name where
- 29:16she lives so. He did the research and then
- 29:18he'd say, OK, I'm going to go get your mom, Carol, but.
- 29:21First, let me go finish off with dear.
- 29:22Y go, finish, off you go. See, Carol.
- 29:24And it's just. This isn't only physical, this
- 29:28is mental. This is just part of the mental
- 29:30thing is like he'd like, all right, yeah, I'm done here.
- 29:34Thank you. Had a good time, sweetheart.
- 29:36Got to go. And then they don't, you know,
- 29:39the woman's tied up. He's tied up.
- 29:41And they be like 20 minutes go by, 30 minutes go by, 40 minutes
- 29:44go by. And they're like, do you think
- 29:44he's gone? He's gone.
- 29:45OK, what are we going to do? What are we doing?
- 29:47Boom. He jump out from a closet.
- 29:48He hadn't left. Hold on.
- 29:50Really. Round 2 so.
- 29:53He'd say, OK, I'm out. Of here, I'm out of here.
- 29:55And then he really wouldn't go out of there.
- 29:57And then they would sit there and talk about themselves.
- 29:59OK, he's going on. Yeah, Yeah.
- 30:00He's gone, he's gone. Let's try to untie ourselves.
- 30:02And because he did not alive them, he'd.
- 30:04Spring out, he'd spray out what I tell you.
- 30:07I told you not to move. No, no, no, you just go another
- 30:10round. Oh my God, Pete, I am so glad
- 30:13you brought this. I'm, I am this.
- 30:15I am fascinated by this. I, I know our audience will be.
- 30:17I am fascinated by this guy, the Golden State Killer.
- 30:20The the the depravity was just. D'Angelo James, D'Angelo the
- 30:26gold. What a sick.
- 30:28Girl. So how many of those instances
- 30:32did he had? Over 50 / 50?
- 30:35Pretty much the same temple. That was his MO.
- 30:38When he would finally be done. Well, when he was finally, let's
- 30:41say 3 hours later and he was still he was still ransacking.
- 30:44Sure, yeah, he'd go go through her clothes, still doing the.
- 30:47Like you said, drink a beer, eat a sandwich.
- 30:49Have some of the guys steak. Hey.
- 30:51Yeah, this is pretty good. I'm gonna eat your dinner.
- 30:52And then would would he unalive them?
- 30:55No. No, he.
- 30:56Hadn't escalated to that yet. Remember the unalivings were
- 30:59incidental, like if someone. Right.
- 31:01So at this point, yeah, we only got one.
- 31:03We only got 1 unaliving on our tab which was the dad.
- 31:06No, it's the dad trying to protect the shelling.
- 31:08Yeah, shelling Mr. Snelling. Mr. Yeah, and trying to protect
- 31:12his daughter. And then we had another incident
- 31:14with a cop, but it hit his flashlight, the flashlight.
- 31:16So that's the closest we've come to.
- 31:18Yeah. Now, like in the midst of these,
- 31:22the 5050 spree, assault spree, there was another unaliving of a
- 31:27couple, I believe they were Majoris or something like that,
- 31:31and they happened to be out with walking the dog in the area.
- 31:37But now he confronts them because they saw him, they take
- 31:40off running, he gives chase and then analyze them.
- 31:43But it wasn't. It wasn't necessarily they
- 31:45weren't a target. Yeah, yeah, they just have a
- 31:47stands. Happened to see.
- 31:49Wrong place at the absolute worst time.
- 31:50So he was trying to do some crazy stuff.
- 31:53They saw him. He's like, I got to get rid of
- 31:56them because they witnessed me. So now he's got the, you know,
- 32:00the unaliveness of Visalia. He's got two of them up in the
- 32:03Sacramento area. Got 3 on our tab.
- 32:06But the guys in Visalia have no idea, because down there he's
- 32:09the Visalia Ransacker. Right up in Sacramento, he's the
- 32:12East Area graper. So he's got the ransacking
- 32:15gimmick that. Well, you got different task
- 32:18courses not realizing they're looking, but they're.
- 32:20Probably they're they're still probably trying to find the
- 32:22Ransacker. Aren't they?
- 32:22Well, sure, they're absolutely. They're still looking for this
- 32:24guy to, you know. Right.
- 32:26And now he's the graper. He's the Graper up in
- 32:28Sacramento. Up in Sacramento and.
- 32:31And but the geographical area is expense like I said, it goes
- 32:35down as far as Stockton and Modesto, which is 50 to 75 miles
- 32:38away. He starts going out as far as
- 32:41like Contra Costa, which is on the east side of the Bay, you
- 32:45know, across the go from San Francisco, across the Bay
- 32:47Bridge, going to Oakland as Alameda, then Contra Costa.
- 32:49So he's making his way out to a significant geographical.
- 32:52Area he keeps, kind of. And so, again, this is part of
- 32:56his institutional knowledge because he knows as a police
- 32:58officer that the detectives in Stockton aren't going to be able
- 33:03to get information. Or they could, of course, but
- 33:05they wouldn't have any reason to associate him with an incident
- 33:08in Oakland. Because technology isn't there,
- 33:10isn't there yet. And he knows that they're not
- 33:12they, just that they don't. They don't canvas each other
- 33:14like that. Yeah, they simply.
- 33:16The most? The most?
- 33:16Part they didn't have the capacity to seamlessly
- 33:19integrate. Especially if they didn't have
- 33:20any hard evidence. You know, you like you this this
- 33:22point, you know they did. They didn't have any idea that
- 33:24the that the the ransacker was the graper.
- 33:28They had no. Idea and you know, these men,
- 33:31they the scumbag from last week, Rex, he was a civilian engaging
- 33:37in death activity. And so they tend to stay in a
- 33:41particular geographical area. Like he'd bring the people back,
- 33:44the women back to his home like he had.
- 33:46That was part of his MO. Whereas what distinguished
- 33:49D'Angelo was the fact that he was law enforcement.
- 33:52He knew not to engage in the type of tactics that the
- 33:59authorities expect. And he had also the advantage of
- 34:04knowing where the authorities may be looking.
- 34:07You know, with with you're not hitting any of the stakeouts and
- 34:10stuff like that. In the Visalia area, that
- 34:11worked. That certainly was the case
- 34:13later on when he was living up in the Sacramento area.
- 34:16If you're, you know, 65 miles, 70 miles, that's another world
- 34:19back in the 70s and 80s. That's a whole another
- 34:21newspaper, a whole another news cycle.
- 34:22That's a whole another police force that's you know, so he
- 34:25would go far enough not to be a thing in his particular area,
- 34:30his agency. He didn't really know much about
- 34:32that stuff down there and he and that's why he was able to do to
- 34:36the tune that was the fifty person spree of sexual assault.
- 34:41Yes. OK, so then.
- 34:42So now he's up to three on the livings 100 and some odd break
- 34:45insurance 50 highly organized assaults on females, so many of
- 34:52them involving the the dish stacking.
- 34:54On the on the male partner. So we're still at the 50 on the
- 34:57on the assaults of which that gets into the dish stacking.
- 35:02Yeah, that's where he starts seeing elements of his
- 35:04signature. Right.
- 35:05And diamond knot, you know, sometimes 323 hours, you know.
- 35:10234. So that's where we are now.
- 35:12Yeah, and still the same thing now.
- 35:14Now he's just violating her physically, right, In addition
- 35:17to violating the the home and taking the sentimental things.
- 35:21I'll take this for myself. Thank you.
- 35:23So he's doing, he's doing assaults on women and also
- 35:28ransacking. And while while you're there,
- 35:30you might as well take that one earring, you might as well take
- 35:33that family, you know, picture. So sure, that's still involved
- 35:37in. So when do we go to Act 3?
- 35:41Well, what's interesting is he in the in the course of his
- 35:48police work, he gets arrested for shoplifting.
- 35:53This, this was the thing that didn't really ever really make
- 35:56sense. So while he's a cop up north,
- 35:58he. Gets arrested for shoplifting,
- 36:00but he's shoplifting what are essentially breaking tools,
- 36:03right? And you know, repellent, Like if
- 36:07you're breaking into a house, what do they got?
- 36:08A Rottweiler. Yeah, you shoot them with some.
- 36:10Bear sprayer, bear repellent, whatever the repellent is, and.
- 36:13Pepper spray back then. They it was like a repellent,
- 36:17like they had bear repellent back in.
- 36:19Especially living in rural California, you know, you
- 36:22probably had bear bear spray before we did.
- 36:24But the authorities didn't connect him with like they
- 36:27didn't say, well, why has he got breaking tools and repellent
- 36:30like most people? If you're like a civilian, I go,
- 36:32OK, what do you we know what you're doing.
- 36:33Yeah. So they don't.
- 36:35They allowed him to plead out the probation.
- 36:38He doesn't get a felony, so that information doesn't make its way
- 36:43into the felony federal databases.
- 36:45So even later on when the FBI gets involved.
- 36:47This is a local yokel deal. This is a local yokel deal.
- 36:50Right now. Was it within the jurisdiction
- 36:52of where he was a cop? He got fired from the police
- 36:54force. All right for this, For this.
- 36:57OK, so now he's no longer a cop and.
- 36:59He's no longer a cop, but of course he still understands.
- 37:02Oh yeah, he has the knowledge of a cop, he just doesn't have the
- 37:04power of a. Cop.
- 37:05And he'll never lose the knowledge.
- 37:07But now does that piss him off? Where is that?
- 37:10Where is it because he is no longer a cop, got fired, got
- 37:13caught? Does that escalate to where we?
- 37:15Now it triggers into. Yeah, the going out for the
- 37:19purposes. Right.
- 37:20They're like, OK, I'm no longer a cop, which is something I
- 37:22loved a lot and something that also is a person that's power
- 37:26hungry. You know, you have power over
- 37:28people. You've taken that gimmick away
- 37:30from me. So now I'm really going to.
- 37:32I need to satisfy that sickness some way, shape or form.
- 37:36Being a cop may have kept some of that sickness quelled at the
- 37:40end of the day, where he could still be a an authoritarian
- 37:43figure. While he's a cop that might not
- 37:46have that might have kept him satisfied enough not to have to
- 37:49go do the final phase of what he did what he's what he's most.
- 37:52Noted for of course. Now this is when it triggers the
- 37:55the apex predator and that's when he gets into the spree of
- 38:05unalivings which take place over the course of A7 year period.
- 38:09So let's start with unaliving one if we could.
- 38:13Well, he had just. He took set, you said.
- 38:15How many? It's at least 10.
- 38:17At least 10. But now he leaves Northern
- 38:20California, leaves the Sacramento area, leaves the Bay
- 38:23Area, comes to Southern California.
- 38:25From Los Angeles to Sacramento or from Los Angeles to San
- 38:29Francisco, you know you're talking 400 miles, 450 miles.
- 38:34And so he makes his way down from Northern Cal down to
- 38:36Southern Cal. And that's a whole another you
- 38:39lived it. That's a whole another world in
- 38:41itself, being in the LA rat race, so to speak.
- 38:43Right. Sure.
- 38:44And so and then the strikes occur in different counties.
- 38:48So he starts off in like there's one in Santa Barbara County,
- 38:51there's one in Ventura County, there's one in Los Angeles
- 38:53County, there's one in Orange County, and there's multiples.
- 38:57But he's now operating in this 5 county area.
- 39:00None of the detectives realize it's all the same guy.
- 39:02And there's still analog where the five counties probably don't
- 39:05talk. And they so now in Southern
- 39:07California, there's rumblings of they, they initially give the
- 39:15guy the nickname the Night Stalker, not to be confused with
- 39:18the one later on that's Richard Ramirez became he's that's why
- 39:21they he becomes known as the original Night Stalker.
- 39:24Right, this is the OG Night Stalker.
- 39:26Not Ramirez. Not Ramirez, who went on to be
- 39:28the most. Famous of the night stalkers.
- 39:30But so the media or the the the journalists, they now are
- 39:35putting these together. But they're not all of them
- 39:37together, right? Because, you know, Santa Barbara
- 39:38is not really close to LA I. Know no, not by digital, I'm
- 39:42sorry, by analog standards. But you know, the ones
- 39:45concentrating the LA area, Ventura, Orange County, that's
- 39:48just, that's all Los Angeles and.
- 39:49So they deem them the Night Stalker.
- 39:51Yeah. And so now the the the
- 39:53detectives down in Southern Cal are targeting D'Angelo as the
- 39:58Night Stalker, not knowing that he's also the East Area Graper.
- 40:02And if I say you're a ransacker? Right.
- 40:05Ransacker first, Graper second. Now we're the night stalk.
- 40:09Yeah, the original. And we're going geographically,
- 40:12bam, bam, bam. Yes.
- 40:14And so over the course of the next, you know, let's say 7
- 40:20years, he was responsible for at least ten of the and a number of
- 40:26kidnappings. Now so from.
- 40:29And he's continuing to do the salt also.
- 40:31All right, so. He just got it.
- 40:33He's got his whole bag of tricks.
- 40:35Yeah, he's gone. He's.
- 40:36But he's taking it to the next level.
- 40:37Now. Now it's.
- 40:38Instead of just doing the sexual assault on the wife the husband
- 40:41has. To break his mouth, doing this,
- 40:43doing having his way, and then just unalighing him.
- 40:45Right, so now he's doing what he did as a Graper, but now instead
- 40:50of just leaving and having them all mine screwed you now are the
- 40:54final aspect of it is I'm going to go ahead and take care, take
- 40:57your life so that so you just basically everything is
- 41:01escalated like the the ransacker was a variation of the graper.
- 41:07They they all just kind of escalate up to where now OK, I'm
- 41:10going to break in sexually assault, do the play.
- 41:12But now my final verdict is I'm going to take your life.
- 41:15Well, he's still using the plates down in Southern
- 41:17California. Oh yeah.
- 41:18That's the that's the trip. That's his gimmick.
- 41:20That's how we use it to neutral the threat posed by the man,
- 41:22right? He has away with the women and
- 41:25then. So from 79 to 86 to 86, yes.
- 41:29So 7 or so years. At least at least 10.
- 41:34At least 10. Well, when he ultimately got
- 41:36knocked off, got arrested in 2018, he pled.
- 41:39In 2020, he stipulated to 13 on a live in total.
- 41:45When and this is just fairly recent, yes, you know, so 7986.
- 41:50He's got at least 10. We have eventually find out it
- 41:53was 13. Well, we got the three from
- 41:55that's two in Sacramento, you got the one in Visalia.
- 41:57So now you're up to at least 13. At least 13.
- 42:00So did the MO Still like you said it was.
- 42:03It was the same as when he was gaping up in up north with the
- 42:08plates on the back. Diamond knot, except he would
- 42:11end it with instead of just leaving and keeping a mind
- 42:14screwed, he would take their lives.
- 42:16Yeah, and and and some of the the the the way he on a live
- 42:20were just like the women were just, you know, with pipes and
- 42:24stuff. I mean, it's just, it's.
- 42:26Horrible. Now we're not.
- 42:27Going to can't get into it because of.
- 42:29YouTube right? I understand but would he then
- 42:33try to? When he went on a live did he
- 42:35just leave him? He would never try to do like
- 42:38the Gilgo guy. Yeah, like one family.
- 42:40The, the, the, the family was on vacation.
- 42:43The young adult daughter was home, right?
- 42:46So she was at work. The family's gone.
- 42:47She, he underlieves her. And the house was in the process
- 42:50of getting shown for sale. And the realtor shows up to show
- 42:54the house. And, and he's got a woman, a
- 42:57she, the, the realtor's got a woman who just went through
- 42:59that. I'm going through that with this
- 43:00guy. Wow, So ten of those.
- 43:03Ten of those. Now where does he goes dormant
- 43:05in 1986? So he stops.
- 43:07Stops, which is unusual. Night Stalker stops in 86?
- 43:10Yes, those 79 to 86 has at least 10.
- 43:13Well, because remember, don't forget, during that era also we
- 43:15had other incidences going on. We had the real nights, the.
- 43:19Subsequent Ramirez. People don't like, did he do
- 43:23those? He had like, all these wild
- 43:26goose chases, right? And so they just come off
- 43:30Charles Manson a decade earlier. Yes, yeah.
- 43:34So, you know, they, they had, you know, I don't know where the
- 43:37Melendez brothers, that was a little bit poor towards the 80s,
- 43:40wasn't it? Yeah, that was awesome.
- 43:41But that was a little bit later. That was a little bit.
- 43:42Later right up and I was still in high school like late 80s in
- 43:45Beverly Hills. In 86, he stops.
- 43:47He stops, he goes dormant, and I haven't been able to discern why
- 43:51because usually these guys don't stop.
- 43:53No, because everything prior to that was an escalation.
- 43:55Escalation now either like you know, they get older, they they
- 43:59lose testosterone, they either age out, they get apprehended or
- 44:04they get, you know, unaligned in a bus accident, a car hits him
- 44:08or whatever, you know, but this guy for whatever when he stops,
- 44:11however, subsequent to going dormant in 86, he's this is
- 44:16where you start getting into the taunting.
- 44:18Now he's calling up the woman from five years ago.
- 44:20Hey, remember when I came saw you?
- 44:21These guys just can't help themselves.
- 44:24Just like the the Gilgo Beach guy when he called up the sister
- 44:27and said, you know, started kind of boasting about what he had
- 44:31done. You know, had that there's
- 44:33probably a portion of these sickos that we cover, Pete.
- 44:36Had they not been taking it to that level, they may not have
- 44:40gotten caught. He in the Gilgo, certainly that
- 44:45was a major contribution. I don't believe it really
- 44:49contributed to that too much here, simply because it was just
- 44:52a matter of technology catching up with the evidence.
- 44:55So he then in 86 stopped and then.
- 44:58But he just can't help himself. From 1991 to 2001, and this is
- 45:03now 15 years after the last, on arriving, he's still doing the
- 45:07tormenting. He's calling.
- 45:08He's calling the police and taunting him.
- 45:11He's calling the newspapers. Because he yearns for the
- 45:14validation to be a bad guy, so he wants to keep the case.
- 45:19You want to say don't lose. He wants to keep the attention.
- 45:21Hey, like, don't forget. Right, don't forget, don't
- 45:23forget, I'm the nights. I'm out here somewhere, you
- 45:25know, that's where, that's where the you see the depravity.
- 45:29Right. And now the circumstances change
- 45:32because in 2001, DNA testing had advanced to the point where they
- 45:38were able to go back and start testing, you know, the backlogs.
- 45:40Right, right, the cold case files.
- 45:42So now you've got the, you know, when a, when a woman is
- 45:44assaulted, obviously there's going to be a medical
- 45:46examination for sure. She's OK.
- 45:48And then there's a kit where they collect the evidence.
- 45:50Right, they call it. They call it the Kit.
- 45:51OK. And so.
- 45:53And within the kit is any bodily fluids exchanged, hair follicle
- 45:58and fiber. 2001 they were able to match the on alive inks from
- 46:07Northern California to one of them from Southern California.
- 46:11So they realized, uh oh, the East area Graper is the original
- 46:15Night Stalker. In O1 when they.
- 46:17Finally that happened. They they could put these two
- 46:20together and then that probably just opened.
- 46:22Up. Well, yeah, he's still not, he's
- 46:23still not the Golden State at that point.
- 46:25Yeah, he's. But he's now the combined East
- 46:27area Original Night Stalker. Well, of course this is early on
- 46:32in the Internet days, probably pre social media, but blogging
- 46:35had become popular and the publication of that information
- 46:40that these two disparate of circumstances are actually one
- 46:44triggered a frenzy of citizen detectives that were essentially
- 46:49now. Blogging or blogging or just
- 46:51they're, they're blogging, you know, like.
- 46:52But they had access to the information.
- 46:54They can go back and pull up every article from the 1970s in
- 46:56the Fresno B and you can, you know, the Contra cost of Times,
- 46:59LA Times and so you had a a community of.
- 47:04Of Internet Salute. Salute, so to speak.
- 47:06That's right. That's right.
- 47:07That for the next 10 years. And they didn't have really a
- 47:10lot to do on the Internet, so they could just really kind of
- 47:12hammer down on this. The details.
- 47:15And there wasn't, you know, gaming is like it is today or
- 47:18there wasn't as many things to distract you on the Internet as
- 47:21there are now. So you have a whole community
- 47:23there. Be like, man, I'm going.
- 47:24To they're tearing apart every aspect of all of these, you
- 47:28know, unsolved cases. Try to link them all together.
- 47:32And so there's a woman, a writer lived in Los Angeles.
- 47:38She becomes consumed with this case.
- 47:42And so, in 2009, she starts. And that's been a long time.
- 47:49You know but it but now it's eight years after the the
- 47:52unification of the targets and she.
- 47:57Mitchell. Mitchell She starts her true
- 48:00crime blog where she does like deep dives into every aspect of
- 48:08what she now believes is this huge data set targeting one
- 48:11individual. She's the one who gives it the
- 48:13name Golden State Killer. So Mitchell, this independent
- 48:17journalist who was really drilling down on the facts, that
- 48:20was at her fingertips. And a writer, so she ends up
- 48:22writing a book about her efforts with respect to the
- 48:24investigation. Goes on to become a New York
- 48:26Times bestseller. So she deems.
- 48:29The Golden when she gave him that name.
- 48:31Yeah, it. Captured the attention of the
- 48:34authorities. Now the the FBI is all in, of
- 48:37course you've got. Well, it kind of unified the
- 48:39effort when you got a, when you got a fancy name to a bad guy,
- 48:44It makes everybody want to rally behind law enforcement and
- 48:48potentially find this bad. Guy And of course you've got
- 48:50this huge community of people that are now emotionally
- 48:53invested, you know, a decade worth of citizen salutes.
- 48:56And at this point, they don't even know where this is going.
- 48:59Right. They just scratched the surface.
- 49:02Yes and so, but now you have a. Thank God for Mitchell.
- 49:06The end of the true crime blogging community.
- 49:09Right. Sure.
- 49:10That she ultimately emerged out of.
- 49:12So between their efforts and then her writing the book and
- 49:16publicizing it and giving a really catchy name.
- 49:19For the books called I'll Be Gone in the Dark.
- 49:22One woman's obsessive search for the Golden State Killer.
- 49:26New York Times bestseller. New York Times bestseller.
- 49:29And then that really probably solidifies and validates the
- 49:33hunt cause at this point they didn't have them, did they?
- 49:35No, no, at this point he's still at large.
- 49:40So even while the book's a best seller, it.
- 49:42Galvanizes public interest, and of course it's going to.
- 49:45Galvanized law enforcement interests and of course nothing
- 49:48is going to invite the FBI to come in and try to glide onto
- 49:52the credit than anything of a high profile nature.
- 49:55It makes the FBI not look so good that now we got a New York
- 49:59Times bestseller from a woman who's done all this evidence and
- 50:02and done all this gathering and or a community that's got all
- 50:05this and you guys haven't got the bad guy well.
- 50:07It's dumb. You really can't blame the FBI
- 50:12only because it's not federal offenses.
- 50:15Yeah, you're right on that you. Know there's not.
- 50:17It's not like they're going to come in and take over the
- 50:19investigation. It's all a California.
- 50:20It's all a California authorities.
- 50:21I mean, I'm normally not in a position of defending the FBI,
- 50:26but it just particular. Certainly.
- 50:27Yeah, you're not. That's not.
- 50:28But it's also a way to get them caught on the case it.
- 50:31Gets them involved because they of course have the, the
- 50:34state-of-the-art, the best forensic laboratories in the
- 50:36world and you know, they have obviously very talented
- 50:40technicians and so. They got a bunch of Tom Simons
- 50:43running around there. Oh, yes, yes, that's right.
- 50:45That are smart as hell. The smartest?
- 50:47Hell yeah. Yeah.
- 50:48And so now the next big break in the case.
- 50:50So you've got the 2001 unification.
- 50:52Now he's the the what the preludes what becomes the Golden
- 50:57State so. Let me ask you a question, Pete,
- 50:58to back up what was his when he was just when he was just the
- 51:01ransacker? What was the very first known
- 51:05date of ransacking? 1974.
- 51:07So night. So we got 1974.
- 51:09This starts in 74 and now we're at 2010 and 10.
- 51:14With the publication of the book.
- 51:15Right. So we got all that period.
- 51:17Where? He's completely, you know.
- 51:19He's he's had his run, he had a 12 year run with the 13 alive
- 51:22wings, 13 alive kidnappings over 50 there's.
- 51:25So many things on. The sky tab, yes.
- 51:28This guy's a bad guy. And with the continuing
- 51:31taunting, right? So they don't know if he's
- 51:34continuing to do stuff because obviously there's other women
- 51:37subsequently getting assaulted. I don't know.
- 51:38Is it him? Did he travel to?
- 51:40Right, this part of California. So now things that he probably
- 51:42he didn't even do now. Are potentially.
- 51:45Get your like maybe this you know.
- 51:46Maybe, maybe he's in San Diego, or maybe he's in, you know, or
- 51:49he could be calling and taunting him saying, yeah, I was just in
- 51:51San Diego. Now when he would call and taunt
- 51:54the police, would he say? This is the.
- 51:56Garden the Garden State. This is the garden.
- 51:58State no, no, at this point he hadn't gotten I mean.
- 52:00Golden State, Yeah. He's, oh, he hadn't gotten the
- 52:02Monica. Yeah, he hadn't.
- 52:02Gotten the Monica. So when he's calling, he's
- 52:04taunting him and he's he's the area graper.
- 52:06So he's got them. He's got like, they're like, you
- 52:08know? Like the other thing they're
- 52:09chasing, like I said, they're. Chasing their tail.
- 52:11They're all just chasing their tail.
- 52:12The next big break is the detectives that come in working
- 52:18in conjunction now with the FBI as a consulting.
- 52:21They haven't taken over the case, but they're they're
- 52:23providing a, a, a supporting role.
- 52:26And they start going through all of the evidence of a physical
- 52:31nature, semen. I don't know if we can get away
- 52:32with saying that. OK, yeah, yeah.
- 52:34They start going through all the forensic type genetic evidence
- 52:37that they have. And one of the detectives
- 52:41decides, you know what? Working with one of the genetic
- 52:44specialists, they take the material of the individual that
- 52:50they knew was tied into the Northern California 1 and
- 52:52Southern California 1. Right at that point, they'd put
- 52:54those. 2 together, those two together and they go and they
- 52:58check on public versions of genetic databases, kind of like
- 53:03a 23andMe. Yeah, because back then they
- 53:06would do the a cheek swab to prisoners and people that were
- 53:09apprehended and things like that.
- 53:11So there wasn't, I don't think there was a 23.
- 53:13There was a there was a in federal prison.
- 53:16We did, Yeah, yeah. I don't know about the state,
- 53:18but they they were, they had to be collect, begun collecting
- 53:20evidence of that nature early 2000. 23andMe wasn't around
- 53:23where people just objectively gave it to you, but they would
- 53:26get in certain instances whether you've been incarcerated.
- 53:29Or they they were already public, publicly available
- 53:32genetic databases. Just not nearly as popular as
- 53:35they are now. And so the the detectives ran it
- 53:37through and they were able to identify individuals that are
- 53:44like they were descendants from the same great, great
- 53:48grandfather. So they were able to.
- 53:50To get a genetic lead, right? So they're like maybe 4
- 53:53generations away. 3 generations ago. 4 generations ago.
- 53:56But it was such, you know, you at that point, you may only be 3
- 54:00generations away, but there's not a lot of people in that
- 54:03bucket. But now you have of humanity,
- 54:05yeah, now you have a subset that you're saying, OK, well, we've
- 54:07got 5 different groupings that descended from this guy from the
- 54:131860, right. And this is where I'm sure the
- 54:15FBI was able to come involved because some of them are people
- 54:19just don't stay in California. You got, you know, who knows
- 54:21where to go following up, right? So now the FBI, working in
- 54:24conjunction with the local authorities, have to start the
- 54:26process of filtering. And looking at markers and.
- 54:30So this you know, of course this is a multi year process.
- 54:32Sure, absolutely. But ultimately they were able to
- 54:35come to D'Angelo this This happened in 2017.
- 54:40And so he hadn't offended since 86, since 86.
- 54:44So now you're taunted. He taunted to 2001, right?
- 54:48So now at this point, he's quiet because he's gotten a lot of
- 54:51attention. And he's smart, like I mean he's
- 54:53an ex cop. I don't know how smart he is,
- 54:54but he's. An ex cop.
- 54:55So he knows I got a lay low that's.
- 54:56Right. I remember, forget, remember.
- 54:57He was born in the 1940s. It's now 2010 and he's in his
- 55:0160s. And he and he hadn't taunted
- 55:03since O1. After they were able to link the
- 55:05two, the Northern and Southern California incidences, I think
- 55:09he started. I haven't seen any indication
- 55:10that he continued writing. 2010, the book comes out, FBI, you
- 55:14know, really, really helping California authorities, They
- 55:17find DNA markers dating back to his great, great, great
- 55:20grandfather. They're able to reverse engineer
- 55:22it. Come to a common thread and it
- 55:24spits out. Break out into different
- 55:27branches, right? And so now you have to follow up
- 55:30on every one of the sure to eliminate.
- 55:32Though some are probably dead, you know some are not.
- 55:34I mean they some naturally. Die through the filtering
- 55:37process they get to DeAngelo. They forget to James DeAngelo.
- 55:40That's right. And so then.
- 55:41After all, that peers down. This is 2017 when they whittle
- 55:45it down to him. So then they were able to
- 55:48extract genetic material from the door handle on his car.
- 55:53And just like the guy from with the pizza crust last week, Rex,
- 55:57same thing this week. They get they go through the
- 55:59tractor able to get a napkin with DNA and genetic material on
- 56:03it. Go get you.
- 56:06Remember last week I was like, oh, Pete, if you're careful and
- 56:08you're like Bubba, they'll get you stop.
- 56:10Don't even think about it. Like they'll, they'll sit out
- 56:12there and get your garbage and find out your piece of toilet
- 56:14paper and get a piece of feces if they yeah, yeah, like you.
- 56:17Know you're blowing your nose on tea or something, whatever.
- 56:19They get some from his door handle on his car, some leftover
- 56:22stuff in his garbage and at that point?
- 56:26They execute the arrest they got April 2018.
- 56:29And so he gets, you know, he gets initially he gets charged
- 56:31and he it's it's a capital prosecution because it's the
- 56:34unalivens with special circumstances.
- 56:36And of course the you know, the kidnappings, you know the statue
- 56:40of limitations is ran on many of the offenses.
- 56:43Most of the ransacking's done. Yeah, they they all look the
- 56:46guy's looking at. Yeah, I mean when you when
- 56:49you've unalived. A a dozen 10 people, you're not.
- 56:51They're not worried about the burglar.
- 56:52They're not worried about you sniffing some girls panties back
- 56:55in 77, am I? Right.
- 56:57I'm sure that's. I'm like, you know, whatever,
- 56:59but we got we got 10 at this point, they know 10 on alive
- 57:04beings that are locked in on this guy based on DNA.
- 57:07Yeah. So when he gets arrested in 18,
- 57:09this is a 72 year old man. And so I mean, obviously it's
- 57:12going to give an opportunity for the victims and the people to
- 57:14get a moment of closure. But so he gets arrested in 18,
- 57:19they take him into custody, he's going through the pretrial
- 57:22process and California obviously brought initiated capital
- 57:27charges. 2020 the pandemic kicks off sure.
- 57:32And. And he's still going through the
- 57:34process. And, you know, the state of
- 57:36California up until that point was unwilling to negotiate the
- 57:38case. But with the pandemic now, you
- 57:42had a problem because a lot of the people were older, right?
- 57:45He's now well into his 70s. You lot of.
- 57:47Lot of victims are probably gone at this.
- 57:49Point A lot of victims are gone and there's got a social
- 57:51distance. You can't be in the court.
- 57:52Everybody's 6 feet away and it's not.
- 57:54And California was as strict about that as anybody.
- 57:57They were absolutely crazy about it.
- 57:59California was Ground Zero on people being uptight over this.
- 58:02Stuff, yeah, everything I shut down.
- 58:04And so we in his in his particular circumstance because
- 58:08of the pandemic and the logistical challenges with and
- 58:14paneling a jury. Not only, but a lot of our
- 58:17victims have probably naturally gone.
- 58:19Exhausted and it's like I said like older people and he's older
- 58:22and so the like so they were they agreed to come off of the
- 58:26capital nature in exchange for a settlement for life which is
- 58:30ultimately what resulted in so in 2020 he.
- 58:33Pleads. PLED because as a result of the
- 58:35pandemic, he ends up catching a break, right and.
- 58:38Because they were going to condemn him.
- 58:39Oh yeah, absolutely. And he catches a break.
- 58:43Life with no parole. Life.
- 58:44With no parole. And that's where we are today.
- 58:47And so he's still in, of course, in California State prison,
- 58:50still here. They got him in protective
- 58:52custody. Yeah, I mean, wow, yeah, man
- 58:54like that. And they got him with 13 and
- 58:57then hard telling how many essays mean.
- 59:00He he acknowledged over 50. Well, yeah, but part of the
- 59:04unaliving were an essay too, you know.
- 59:08It's over 50, right? We don't have a number because
- 59:10he. Just think about how I don't
- 59:12want to say lucky because this is not certainly the word I want
- 59:15to use. But when he was in his second
- 59:17phase, you know, we went to ransacking, then we went to, you
- 59:20know, the sexual assaults over 50.
- 59:23And then it goes to the third phase, which involved assault
- 59:26with unlike unaliving people. But think of that second sub
- 59:30sect of like, listen, I wouldn't nobody would want this have to
- 59:35sit there with plates on your back and and a rag in your
- 59:37mouth. But you know, at that point he
- 59:39hadn't escalated to unaliven people.
- 59:42Think about how lucky those people were, because you know,
- 59:45he had it. The next step was to incorporate
- 59:49that with unaliven. Think about how just Oh my God,
- 59:53how mine after you would be sitting there and then, like you
- 59:58said, they would sometimes, you know, say OK, it's been 20
- 1:00:01minutes. I think we're good.
- 1:00:02Start untying me. I'll untie you.
- 1:00:03And then he pops up. Hey, like, I mean, I told you
- 1:00:07God. Yeah, wow.
- 1:00:09James D'Angelo. One of Indianos of American
- 1:00:14serial offenders. What a.
- 1:00:17Great episode, Pete and the information and and this is the
- 1:00:21thing. This is one of the one of the
- 1:00:22worst, one of the worst cases of mentally abusing somebody while
- 1:00:29physically abusing them. And it's a very little known
- 1:00:32case. A lot of people don't know about
- 1:00:33this. I mean, I didn't really know
- 1:00:35about a just a complexity of how sick of a person he was.
- 1:00:39And he was a two time or three time law enforcement guy.
- 1:00:42And you know, Gee, Oh my Lord, great, great work, Pete.
- 1:00:46That's that's why we got them. I just asked the questions.
- 1:00:49This guy brings it home. We'll have a next one next week.
- 1:00:52Can we give them, do you know what?
- 1:00:53Can I give them a tease? What next week it'll be?
- 1:00:55Or is that to be it? To be continued.
- 1:00:57Well, I'm doing research on a couple more, so I'll let you
- 1:00:59know. That's Pete way of saying Bubba
- 1:01:00be quiet. I'm doing research on a couple
- 1:01:03more appreciate you. It's deadly intentions with Pete
- 1:01:07and Bubba. Give us a like follow us, tell
- 1:01:10your friends. More importantly, watch it.
