Transcript
- 0:01Katie: In this episode, you will discover why your body may be treating your pregnancy like a threat instead of something to protect and nurture.
- 0:10Welcome to the Finally Get Pregnant Naturally podcast, the podcast helping women identify the real reasons you haven't conceived or stayed pregnant so you and your partner can finally grow the family of your dreams.
- 0:24I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:25Katie Wood.
- 0:26Let's dive in, shall we?
- 0:29Katie: Three things you'll gain from today's episode: the reframe to the question, "Is my body rejecting my pregnancies?"
- 0:37Katie: that actually brings you relief, what is really happening when your immune system stays in defense mode instead of making the shift an early pregnancy needs, and the common drivers behind it that a conventional workup never investigates, even after
- 0:55Katie: a loss.
- 0:56Katie: So I want to dive in first and foremost about the fear that you probably have never spoken out loud.
- 1:06Katie: So if you've ever been through a loss, or more than one, there is a question that may have crossed your mind in the quietest, darkest moments, a question you might have never said out loud to anyone: Is my
- 1:24Katie: body rejecting my pregnancies?
- 1:29Katie: Is my own body the problem?
- 1:32Katie: And I want to start here because I know how heavy that question is to carry, how confusing it is, how frustrating And I want to give you a different way to understand what may actually be happening, because the
- 1:49Katie: truth is far more comforting than the fear and doubt.
- 1:54Katie: But before I go any further, I really want to be clear about one thing.
- 1:58Katie: What I'm about to walk you through is not the cause of every miscarriage.
- 2:03Katie: Loss happens for many different reasons, and a lot of the time, it has nothing to do with what we're talking about today.
- 2:11Katie: But for some women, this is a real and genuinely overlooked piece of the picture.
- 2:19Katie: And if it's part of yours, it deserves to be understood and investigated rather than missed or even dismissed.
- 2:29Katie: So take what fits for you and leave what doesn't.
- 2:33Katie: But here's something that most women are not taught, but when you get pregnant, your immune system actually has to do something pretty remarkable.
- 2:44Katie: That developing life is genetically different from you, so your body actually has to make a shift from a system designed to defend against anything foreign into a system that recognizes this new life as something to protect and nurture,
- 3:03Katie: not fight.
- 3:04Katie: That is why your immune system has a lower threshold during pregnancy.
- 3:10Katie: That shift toward tolerance is one of the most important things your body does in early pregnancy, and it depends on your immune system being calm and regulated enough to make that happen.
- 3:24Katie: So here's the reframe, and I really want this part to sit with you.
- 3:29Katie: If your body is struggling to hold a pregnancy, it is not that your body is incapable of carrying a pregnancy.
- 3:39Katie: It could be that your immune system is already stuck in high alert and in defense mode before the pregnancy even begins, and it's having trouble shifting into that tolerance.
- 3:55Katie: Your body is not betraying you.
- 3:58Katie: It's being overprotective.
- 4:00Katie: It's a system that's been on high alert, and the reason underneath that has not been addressed and that with the right guidance, you can reveal what's driving this, so you can calm your system to be open and receptive
- 4:15Katie: to nurturing your pregnancy So let's talk about what can keep your body stuck on high alert.
- 4:23Katie: So the real question is not whether your body is broken.
- 4:26Katie: Your body is not broken.
- 4:27Katie: Your body is capable, and it is so worthy.
- 4:31Katie: It's this: What is keeping your immune system in that state of defense in the first place?
- 4:38Katie: Because an overactive, inflamed immune system does not come out of nowhere.
- 4:43Katie: There is always a driver underneath it, or maybe even multiple drivers, and they tend to be the same handful of things.
- 4:51Katie: The first is your gut.
- 4:54Katie: The majority of your immune system lives in and around your gut.
- 4:58Katie: So when the gut is inflamed, imbalanced, or carrying a low-grade issue that maybe it's had for years, your whole immune system runs hot.
- 5:09Katie: A gut that has been struggling quietly is one of the most common reasons a body stays in a low-level state of inflammation that never fully switches off.
- 5:21Katie: The second is thyroid autoimmunity.
- 5:24Katie: This is a big one that gets missed constantly because you can have thyroid antibodies, meaning your system is quietly reacting to your own thyroid while at times your standard TSH could look completely normal.
- 5:39Katie: And thyroid antibodies, even on their own, are well documented to raise miscarriage risk.
- 5:45Katie: So if no one has ever run your antibodies, which it typically does not get checked in conventional medicine, the whole piece of the picture has simply never been looked at, and it's such a simple test.
- 5:58Katie: The third is a hidden low-grade infection or imbalance, often somewhere like the gut or the vaginal microbiome that's not making you obviously sick, but it's keeping your immune system activated in the background.
- 6:12Katie: It can be quiet, often without symptoms, and it's rarely, if ever, tested for after a loss.
- 6:20Katie: And underneath all of it sits your nervous system.
- 6:24Katie: When your body has been under chronic stress or has been bracing for a long time, it stays in a protective, defensive state, and that state keeps the whole system primed for a threat rather than settled enough for tolerance.
- 6:40Katie: These drivers are not random And notice something.
- 6:45Katie: Every single one of them is addressable.
- 6:48Katie: So let's briefly touch on why no one has looked at this and what you can do.
- 6:53Katie: So why has no one ever investigated this for you?
- 6:57Katie: And this might make you frustrated, right?
- 6:58Katie: Why has your doctor never looked into this?
- 7:01Katie: Because conventional care usually does not even begin looking at recurrent loss until you've had two or three, and even then, the workup tends to check just a few surface markers, and if they don't find anything, they kind of
- 7:18Katie: stop from there.
- 7:19Katie: They almost never ask the deeper question of what is driving the inflammation.
- 7:26Katie: It often just looks for symptoms or confirmation in labs, but they never ask, "Well, what is driving the inflammation to begin with?
- 7:35Katie: Where is it coming from?"
- 7:37Katie: And why your body is like stuck in this chronic high alert state.
- 7:43Katie: It looks at the smoke, but it never goes looking for the fire.
- 7:47Katie: And this is exactly what we look at inside Decode Your Fertility because instead of guessing, we actually go looking for where that inflammation and immune activation are coming from, your gut, your thyroid, your microbiome, the pieces conventional testing
- 8:05Katie: skips so you can finally understand what your body has been responding to this whole time.
- 8:12Katie: Because once you know what is keeping your system in defense mode, you can start to calm it, and a calm, regulated body is one that can finally do what it was always designed to do, which is protect and
- 8:25Katie: nurture a pregnancy, not fight it.
- 8:29Katie: So if you're ready to start doubting your own body and start understanding it, Decode is open now, and the link is in the show notes.
- 8:38Katie: So let's recap today's episode.
- 8:40Katie: If your body has struggled to hold a pregnancy, it could be an immune system stuck in defense mode, unable to easily make the shift into the tolerance and early pregnancy needs.
- 8:54Katie: That overprotective state is usually driven by a handful of things.
- 8:57Katie: This is not all inclusive, but a few handful of things like your gut, thyroid autoimmunity, and a quiet low-grade infection in a nervous system that's been on high alert for too long.
- 9:10Katie: A conventional workup never looks for any of it.
- 9:14Katie: And I just want you to remember, your body has not been betraying you.
- 9:17Katie: It has simply been overprotective, and overprotection can be calmed once you finally know what is behind it.
- 9:27Katie: So I just wanna thank you so much for listening to today's episode.
