- 0:04Speaker 1: Good morning, sports fans of Folkestone. How are we doing
- 0:07Speaker 1: this morning? It's me, Aidy Dawkes, back in the hot
- 0:10Speaker 1: seat after my trip to Scarborough last weekend. I've got
- 0:14Speaker 1: Kevin alongside me here today.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Good morning, Kev.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Good morning, Adrian.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good to see you. And good to see you too.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Back in the shoes. Seems that ages for me.
- 0:22Speaker 3: It does, actually, yes.
- 0:23Speaker 2: A few weeks ago. And we've got a special guest
- 0:25Speaker 2: in today. Good morning, Dave.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Good morning.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Dave's been in before on Kev's show. More about that
- 0:32Speaker 1: in a bit. And today is Derby Day.
- 0:35Speaker 2: It's the FA Cup.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Oh, is it?
- 0:37Speaker 3: I didn't know that. Who are the folks I'm playing in?
- 0:40Speaker 2: That team from over the hill today.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Oh, what, Dover?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Dover Athletic. More about them a little bit later.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Anything else from you this morning?
- 0:49Speaker 3: Well, just a general rundown. The hockey season starts today,
- 0:53Speaker 3: in fact. And so I won't go through all the
- 0:56Speaker 3: fixtures because now they are actually running 15 teams.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I was over there on Monday and I could
- 1:03Speaker 1: see on the scoreboard or flashing advertising boards, whatever it is,
- 1:08Speaker 1: all the teams that are playing and the times, etc. So, yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 1: they're going to be very busy today.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I know. And I think they're going to be even
- 1:15Speaker 3: busier because, sadly, I suspect people have picked up on
- 1:18Speaker 3: the news that there was a fire at the Burst
- 1:20Speaker 3: Inn and some of the people have been evacuated up
- 1:23Speaker 3: to the Three Hills. So there'll be, I don't know, overlapping.
- 1:27Speaker 3: So that's unfolding as we go, really.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all still a little bit raw.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I was going to tell you all about my trip
- 1:35Speaker 1: to Scarborough last weekend, but it seems to have been
- 1:37Speaker 1: overshadowed a little bit by the fire down in the Burstyn.
- 1:40Speaker 2: We know nothing more at the moment.
- 1:42Speaker 3: It doesn't seem too bad, actually. You know, what social
- 1:46Speaker 3: media is like. And all the papers are kind of
- 1:49Speaker 3: reporting the same news because not much has come out.
- 1:52Speaker 3: There doesn't seem to be any sort of serious injuries
- 1:54Speaker 3: or fatalities or anything like that.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Obviously, that's the main thing.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I mean, last week, you know, 5,000 skinheads down there.
- 2:01Speaker 2: It could have put.
- 2:02Speaker 3: The smell of Harrington jackets going up and braces.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Scar music. It could have been extinct last week. But no,
- 2:10Speaker 1: I mean, on a serious note, I mean, it's terrible
- 2:13Speaker 1: up there.
- 2:13Speaker 2: You know, a fire.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Anywhere's bad, but, you know, for Hotel Burstyn and.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Trade for the town of Folkestone it's not going to
- 2:24Speaker 1: be great but like you say hopefully everything will be
- 2:27Speaker 1: okay and there'll be no hopefully no.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Fatalities and no injuries etc just.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Maybe a nasty little fire and probably a lot of
- 2:36Speaker 1: work to be done to get it back it seems
- 2:40Speaker 1: a shame because they've spent so much on the hotel
- 2:44Speaker 1: Burstyn and as I said I was down there last
- 2:46Speaker 1: week and the ballroom now is looks fantastic it's all
- 2:50Speaker 1: new seats um and you know it is a shame
- 2:53Speaker 1: but anyway we're sports show as well we're crack on
- 2:57Speaker 1: um play the first song um this goes out to
- 3:01Speaker 1: folks in evicted today this is called today is going
- 3:05Speaker 1: to be our day fingers crossed it's going to be
- 3:09Speaker 1: this is the molotovs The fantastic Molotovs there, and today's
- 3:39Speaker 1: going to be our day, fingers crossed. It will be
- 3:41Speaker 1: our day at the Crabble this afternoon. Molotovs, incidentally, have
- 3:45Speaker 1: got a new album coming out, Erbia. Hopefully the single,
- 3:50Speaker 1: they were trying to promote it, and hopefully it might
- 3:52Speaker 1: be number one today. Fingers crossed for the Molotovs. Okay, Kev,
- 3:57Speaker 1: as you say, we've got a special guest in this morning.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I'll hand over to you.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Okay, yes, good morning. So, Dave, good morning to you, Dave.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Good morning, Kevin.
- 4:05Speaker 3: David, before we go and speak about the run, you've
- 4:10Speaker 3: kind of got some news, current news, if you like,
- 4:13Speaker 3: about the bursting. Because of the park runners on this morning,
- 4:17Speaker 3: you had to kind of go down and sort of
- 4:19Speaker 3: check it out. So tell us about that. That's sort
- 4:21Speaker 3: of breaking news, really.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm the event director for the Folkestone Park Run.
- 4:25Speaker 4: So I have an overall responsibility kind of for the
- 4:27Speaker 4: health and safety of the event and to make sure
- 4:29Speaker 4: it runs smoothly and people enjoy themselves. So is it,
- 4:34Speaker 4: where's the lady from Dover, Amy?
- 4:36Speaker 3: Amy, Amy Stimson, yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 4: About quarter to six this morning, bless her, she put
- 4:41Speaker 4: on the group chat that there's a fire at the Burstin,
- 4:43Speaker 4: the first I knew about it. So I looked at
- 4:44Speaker 4: Kent Online. Some of the photos showed quite a lot
- 4:48Speaker 4: of smoke. during the night so I went out early
- 4:51Speaker 4: to check the course and the wind direction and we
- 4:55Speaker 4: were unaffected so we put something out on our social
- 4:58Speaker 4: media at about quarter to eight that we could go
- 5:00Speaker 4: ahead and we did go ahead as normal.
- 5:02Speaker 3: And it was fine yeah it was fine yeah yeah
- 5:04Speaker 3: okay right so there you go and what about um
- 5:06Speaker 3: if you you was telling us earlier about sort of
- 5:08Speaker 3: access getting down there.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Um um yeah as a pedestrian you can't get further
- 5:13Speaker 4: than the London and Paris uh uh hotel on one
- 5:17Speaker 4: side They're stopping you walking over the railway bridge to
- 5:20Speaker 4: where the customs house is. So effectively the Harbour Arm
- 5:24Speaker 4: is totally cut off at this point. Any cars coming
- 5:27Speaker 4: down Tram Road are being diverted straight back up Tontine Street.
- 5:31Speaker 4: So it will hit, you know, obviously we hope that
- 5:34Speaker 4: everybody's okay and there's nobody hurt, but it will hit
- 5:37Speaker 4: the business on the Harbour Arm today.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yes, I think they've got a big weekend, some German
- 5:42Speaker 3: music going on. Okay, Dave, well thanks for that. Anyway,
- 5:44Speaker 3: so let's turn our attention to last week. Now, Around
- 5:47Speaker 3: about 10 days ago, you came into the studio and
- 5:51Speaker 3: we had a long chat about the walk that was
- 5:53Speaker 3: coming up at the time, 100 kilometres. So let's kind
- 5:57Speaker 3: of take a, not quite step by step, we'd be
- 6:00Speaker 3: here for the whole weekend, but take a step by step.
- 6:03Speaker 3: So you managed to, did you stay up there the
- 6:05Speaker 3: night before? Let's start with that.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I stayed up in a hotel in Shepherd's Bush
- 6:09Speaker 4: because I registered the day before over at Bishop's Park.
- 6:12Speaker 4: It was a lovely hotel, but unfortunately it was on
- 6:15Speaker 4: the first floor right by Shepherd's Bush Green. And what
- 6:18Speaker 4: I didn't know, that Friday night is party night on
- 6:20Speaker 4: Shepherd's Bush Green. So there was a lot of smashing
- 6:23Speaker 4: of bottles and the drinking of stuff and smoking. I
- 6:27Speaker 4: could smell it, even though I had my windows closed.
- 6:30Speaker 4: So it was quite a noisy night.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Oh, dear.
- 6:32Speaker 4: The hotel was great. So, yeah, I was nervous anyway,
- 6:36Speaker 4: so I was always going to get up early, but
- 6:38Speaker 4: they made sure I did get up early.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:41Speaker 3: So were you far from the start?
- 6:43Speaker 4: It was a bus ride.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 4: It was a 20 minute bus ride from Shepherd's Bush
- 6:48Speaker 4: Green down to Putney Bridge basically.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:51Speaker 3: And what was the, you know, were there many there
- 6:53Speaker 3: at the start? They obviously go off in waves.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Yeah, there was, overall, there was about 3,000 because there
- 6:58Speaker 4: was many different events. There was a 10K, a 25K.
- 7:01Speaker 4: There were people only doing the first day. There were
- 7:04Speaker 4: some people doing it non-stop and there was us doing
- 7:08Speaker 4: the two day challenge. There was 98 of us so
- 7:11Speaker 4: we were set off in waves from uh seven o'clock
- 7:15Speaker 4: so every half an hour there was a wave of
- 7:17Speaker 4: roughly 200 people but we were mixed bag of people
- 7:21Speaker 4: doing different.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Events right okay and i mean did you did you
- 7:25Speaker 3: notice that did you think people kind of went off
- 7:27Speaker 3: flying you know like like the junior park run they
- 7:30Speaker 3: just slowed down for the first bit.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Especially the seven o'clock wave uh they were you know
- 7:35Speaker 4: there was me with my rucksack with my two liters
- 7:37Speaker 4: of water my chewy bars my poncho in case it rained,
- 7:41Speaker 4: my walking poles. Some people basically just had a little
- 7:45Speaker 4: bib on with a little bit of water and you
- 7:47Speaker 4: can see that they were going to take it seriously.
- 7:49Speaker 4: They were running all the way around.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, right.
- 7:52Speaker 4: They weren't flying off.
- 7:53Speaker 3: So take us through the first sort of, you know, 10k, 20k.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Yeah, it was very crowded. It was, excuse me, very
- 8:02Speaker 4: crowded start. It kind of evened out over the first
- 8:05Speaker 4: couple of kilometres and I did think about running or
- 8:09Speaker 4: jogging lightly the first 10K, and I was advised not to,
- 8:12Speaker 4: just put a bit more vigour into your walking pace,
- 8:14Speaker 4: which I did. So I started off at a good
- 8:16Speaker 4: pace of 6K, and then we kind of settled down
- 8:21Speaker 4: the first half a dozen K with other people. And then, yeah,
- 8:26Speaker 4: I met a couple of people who started nattering. So,
- 8:29Speaker 4: you know, we got into it after the first couple
- 8:31Speaker 4: of K, around the Harrods Depository.
- 8:35Speaker 3: One more, huh?
- 8:36Speaker 4: Is it depository? Suppository? No, it's where they.
- 8:39Speaker 3: That early on, was it really?
- 8:40Speaker 4: Their storage place. I think that was a wrong choice
- 8:43Speaker 4: of words.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I think you're right there. Don't worry, it is live. Okay,
- 8:49Speaker 3: so moving on after your toilet break. I mean, when
- 8:54Speaker 3: did you start to feel that, you know, you've been
- 8:58Speaker 3: doing a bit of walking or because of all the training,
- 9:00Speaker 3: you've done a lot of training, you know, that obviously
- 9:02Speaker 3: paid off?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Well, initially, I started walking with a lady called Helen,
- 9:07Speaker 4: an amazing lady. We started having a natter, probably after
- 9:11Speaker 4: the first 20 or 30 minutes, chatting away. And you
- 9:14Speaker 4: know what? I didn't actually notice the kilometers passing. No, no.
- 9:18Speaker 4: 10 went past, 20 went past. We got to halfway.
- 9:22Speaker 4: And I thought, oh, I feel great. You know, 25K.
- 9:24Speaker 4: We were very near Hamden Court by then. And I
- 9:29Speaker 4: felt great as though I hadn't done anything. So I
- 9:31Speaker 4: thought this is a good start.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 3: And what was the weather like?
- 9:34Speaker 4: It was about 20 degrees.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Sunny.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:37Speaker 4: But yeah.
- 9:38Speaker 3: No rain or anything?
- 9:39Speaker 4: No rain at all.
- 9:40Speaker 3: That's good.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Excellent.
- 9:43Speaker 3: So you come back with a cough then?
- 9:44Speaker 4: Yes. Okay.
- 9:46Speaker 3: So moving on there. So we have got like 50,
- 9:48Speaker 3: 50k to cover. Yeah. So what was it like in
- 9:54Speaker 3: sort of 40K almost?
- 9:56Speaker 4: Well, 42 is quite a milestone because i've uh i've
- 10:00Speaker 4: done a few marathons and in my training i've never
- 10:02Speaker 4: taken a step over 42k so that was quite significant
- 10:06Speaker 4: and uh i uh again the nattering the chatting the
- 10:11Speaker 4: amazing people that i met it just flew past and
- 10:14Speaker 4: I did have a few aches and pains in the
- 10:16Speaker 4: last 10K, but got to the finish at Runnymede on
- 10:19Speaker 4: the first evening.
- 10:21Speaker 3: So you say the finish, but that's only the finish
- 10:23Speaker 3: of the first half, isn't it?
- 10:24Speaker 4: That was the first day.
- 10:25Speaker 3: So what happens, I suppose there was a food station
- 10:29Speaker 3: or rest station?
- 10:30Speaker 4: Yeah. So as you know, Kevin, you know me well,
- 10:33Speaker 4: I'm ruled by my stomach. My biggest weakness is food.
- 10:38Speaker 4: So I had to really discipline myself and not spend
- 10:42Speaker 4: too long at the food stations on the way. There
- 10:44Speaker 4: was one at 12k, 25, 37 and one at 50.
- 10:49Speaker 4: So I actually kept those to a minimum. So over
- 10:51Speaker 4: the two days, I was only actually stopping 20 minutes
- 10:55Speaker 4: each day in total, which I think that is very
- 10:56Speaker 4: good for me. That included a toilet break as well. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I was very disciplined.
- 11:01Speaker 3: So halfway, you're halfway, you've done 50k, right? 31 miles
- 11:06Speaker 3: i do believe what were those extra two miles like
- 11:08Speaker 3: that yeah you added two miles i did an under
- 11:11Speaker 3: a k is 62 miles you thought he was only
- 11:13Speaker 3: going to walk 60 that's it yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Well if somebody had held a gun to my head
- 11:17Speaker 4: on saturday night and uh said right now get out
- 11:20Speaker 4: there and just carry on and do another 50k i
- 11:22Speaker 4: could not have done it no i'd mentally set myself
- 11:25Speaker 4: up to do 50 that day some of the people
- 11:28Speaker 4: who were getting a massage and treatment next to me
- 11:31Speaker 4: in the area were carrying on and I could see
- 11:35Speaker 4: the pain and dread in their face. I could not
- 11:38Speaker 4: have done another step that day. So I had 12
- 11:40Speaker 4: hours rest in a nice hotel with a bath.
- 11:42Speaker 3: You did? Okay.
- 11:43Speaker 4: So.
- 11:45Speaker 3: So did you, the halfway was a feed station where
- 11:48Speaker 3: you could not binge, but you could really kind of
- 11:50Speaker 3: let yourself.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Go a bit.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Evening meal.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah. A nice chicken and couscous. It was a
- 11:56Speaker 4: very nice, nice food. I made the most of that.
- 11:59Speaker 4: They went to all that trouble. So I did partake
- 12:02Speaker 4: in that and had the massage was very important because
- 12:05Speaker 4: I did have a few aches and pains.
- 12:06Speaker 3: How were your feet at this stage?
- 12:08Speaker 4: I had a couple of small blisters, but I strapped
- 12:10Speaker 4: them up. So it wasn't too bad. And then got
- 12:14Speaker 4: an Uber off to my hotel.
- 12:15Speaker 3: All right. Very nice, too.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Well, we're going to play a bit of music now,
- 12:20Speaker 3: and we'll come back, and we will start with you
- 12:23Speaker 3: waking up at the hotel and tell us if you
- 12:25Speaker 3: had a good night's sleep that night. So, Adrian, what
- 12:27Speaker 3: have we got?
- 12:28Speaker 1: Well, quite ironically, it's UB40 and Chrissie Hyde. This one's called,
- 12:32Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you did, breakfast in bed.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Your face is a mess Come in, baby You can
- 12:51Speaker 5: dry the tears on my dress Breakfast in bed Kisses
- 12:54Speaker 5: for me You don't have to say.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Hello There you go, Ali Campbell and the boys, UB40,
- 13:17Speaker 1: plus special guest Chrissie Hyde from 1988. That was breakfast
- 13:21Speaker 1: in bed. You didn't get breakfast in bed then, Dave?
- 13:23Speaker 4: No, I left at 5 a.m. The breakfast didn't start
- 13:26Speaker 4: until 7.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 4: I was crying all the.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Way to the start. So, Dave, so you left Halfway
- 13:35Speaker 3: Point and you went to a hotel. So tell us
- 13:39Speaker 3: about the hotel. Was it a peaceful night?
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I specifically asked for a hotel with a bath, which
- 13:45Speaker 4: I did get. I didn't stipulate a plug, though, because
- 13:49Speaker 4: when I got into the room, there was a lovely bath,
- 13:52Speaker 4: but no plug.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Trooped off down to reception. After about an hour, they
- 13:58Speaker 4: found a plug, which I was really grateful for, so
- 14:01Speaker 4: I could have a bath. Put it in, and it
- 14:03Speaker 4: was too small. So that went into a plastic bag,
- 14:07Speaker 4: and after an hour or so, I had a lovely
- 14:09Speaker 4: hot bath. That was... Oh, gorgeous.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Yeah, was that heaven, was it? That was worth the
- 14:14Speaker 3: little trip. So what was the alternative if you didn't
- 14:17Speaker 3: make your own accommodation?
- 14:19Speaker 4: They did offer a campsite. They offered to provide the
- 14:22Speaker 4: tent and a spongy mat. You had to provide your
- 14:25Speaker 4: own sleeping bag and pillow that would be sent ahead
- 14:28Speaker 4: as luggage. It was in a school playing field, which
- 14:30Speaker 4: was on the flight path to Heathrow via Main Road.
- 14:34Speaker 4: And it's an area where kids like to party, a
- 14:36Speaker 4: bit like Shepherds Bush Green really.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:38Speaker 4: So I think the people that went there didn't get
- 14:40Speaker 4: a lot of sleep.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Right. So it was a better deal that you got then. Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I know what I'd do again. Yeah. I'd do it again.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:48Speaker 3: So you set off on the next day. Did you
- 14:51Speaker 3: have a specified set off time or was there a
- 14:54Speaker 3: window where you could just turn up?
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 4: It was 6am. This was the bit I was really
- 14:57Speaker 4: worried about in advance because I'd done the training and
- 15:01Speaker 4: but not back to back. So I did not really
- 15:03Speaker 4: know how I was going to feel on Sunday morning,
- 15:05Speaker 4: but I felt pretty good relative to how I thought
- 15:08Speaker 4: I would. So 6am in the dark, we set off
- 15:10Speaker 4: from Runnymede, walking through Windsor and we were off again.
- 15:15Speaker 4: So yeah, another enjoyable, the first 25k was enjoyable, passed
- 15:19Speaker 4: some beautiful houses around Maidenhead and around this beautiful part
- 15:25Speaker 4: of the country. And I was doing really well at 75k.
- 15:28Speaker 4: So that was 25k on the day. 75k overall. I
- 15:33Speaker 4: was actually the first man at that point. So the
- 15:36Speaker 4: first 75k, I was doing well.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 15:40Speaker 3: And did you team up with anybody that you teamed
- 15:42Speaker 3: up with before?
- 15:43Speaker 4: I started off with this amazing lady called Helen. I
- 15:48Speaker 4: realised that I was probably holding her back. So after
- 15:51Speaker 4: a first few kilometres on Sunday morning, I sent her
- 15:54Speaker 4: on her way to do her own walk rather than mine.
- 15:58Speaker 4: But speaking to some amazing people on the route, a
- 16:01Speaker 4: lady called Karen who lost her husband to suicide at
- 16:05Speaker 4: only 34 with four children. Other people running for cardiac
- 16:10Speaker 4: risk in the young. She lost her brother. So there's
- 16:13Speaker 4: some amazing stories that were driving people to get to
- 16:15Speaker 4: that start line.
- 16:16Speaker 3: You're dead right, Dave. I mean, that's what drives the
- 16:19Speaker 3: people on. I mean, I don't know if you, perhaps
- 16:23Speaker 3: later on in the last quarter of the whole weekend,
- 16:27Speaker 3: Perhaps you were having a bad moment. You were telling
- 16:29Speaker 3: me why you're doing it. Last week, you were telling
- 16:31Speaker 3: me why you're doing it for your dad, which was
- 16:33Speaker 3: a really sad story. So just, if you don't mind,
- 16:36Speaker 3: let's just briefly recap about your dad.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Yeah, my dad was in the RAF during the Second
- 16:42Speaker 4: World War, based out in Calcutta, in Bengal, in northeast India.
- 16:47Speaker 4: He was in the RAF, you know, attacking the Japanese
- 16:52Speaker 4: in Burma. He was a gunner on a Lancaster gun.
- 16:55Speaker 4: They got shot at on their return to base. They
- 16:59Speaker 4: ended up crash landing near where they were, near where
- 17:03Speaker 4: they were based. He was the only survivor. I always
- 17:06Speaker 4: remember him covered in scars. He had a lot of
- 17:08Speaker 4: broken bones. He never really talked about it much.
- 17:11Speaker 2: No.
- 17:11Speaker 4: But, you know, he did leave the RAF with post-traumatic
- 17:16Speaker 4: stress disorder like millions did at the end of the
- 17:19Speaker 4: Second World War. And that developed into paranoid schizophrenia.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Really?
- 17:23Speaker 4: In the 1950s.
- 17:26Speaker 3: And the thing was, we said this the other day,
- 17:28Speaker 3: that people didn't have quite an understanding of that in
- 17:31Speaker 3: those days. Now, there's much more, which is why you
- 17:33Speaker 3: ran for South Kent Mine. There's much more understanding and
- 17:37Speaker 3: people out there counselling and things like that, isn't there?
- 17:40Speaker 4: There's more prevention out there. And this is kind of
- 17:42Speaker 4: what South Kent Mine is doing, being there for somebody
- 17:45Speaker 4: at early stages, which they do for thousands of people
- 17:48Speaker 4: in the local area. That catchment, that safety net wasn't
- 17:53Speaker 4: there for my dad. They dealt with the symptoms. And
- 17:58Speaker 4: they sectioned him, but there wasn't any there to try
- 18:01Speaker 4: and prevent it happening.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Right, such a shame. So, I mean, when you were really,
- 18:08Speaker 3: really struggling, or let me ask it a different way,
- 18:11Speaker 3: was there any points when you were really struggling?
- 18:13Speaker 4: Yeah, Sunday was a bit more challenging because lots of
- 18:16Speaker 4: the different events, the different distances were all happening on
- 18:19Speaker 4: the Saturday. So there were less of a starting off
- 18:22Speaker 4: in Runnymede Sunday morning. So we were a lot, after
- 18:25Speaker 4: the first 5 to 10K, the other side of Windsor,
- 18:29Speaker 4: you saw less people. So we were by yourself a
- 18:32Speaker 4: bit more. I ran with a great guy, Matthew. We
- 18:36Speaker 4: stuck together till 75K. So that's 25K on the day.
- 18:40Speaker 4: But from that onwards to the finish, I was kind
- 18:44Speaker 4: of by myself and I was just getting very tired.
- 18:48Speaker 4: I sorted all my blisters out. So there was nothing
- 18:50Speaker 4: that was going to incapacitate me to stop. I was
- 18:53Speaker 4: just getting so tired. It started to rain as well.
- 18:57Speaker 4: So the last 25K was the hardest, but there was
- 19:02Speaker 4: no way I was going to stop. I thought about
- 19:03Speaker 4: my dad, about why I was doing it, my family,
- 19:06Speaker 4: the sponsors and things like that. And that kept me going,
- 19:09Speaker 4: but I was gradually getting slower, but there was no
- 19:12Speaker 4: way I was going to stop.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Yeah, right. I can relate to that because we did
- 19:16Speaker 3: discuss this. I mean, I did the 100K through the
- 19:20Speaker 3: day and through the night. And mine was from London
- 19:23Speaker 3: to Brighton. And we got over the sort of the downs,
- 19:27Speaker 3: you know, sort of ditchling beacon area. And there was
- 19:29Speaker 3: a big flat surface. And I could see the finish
- 19:32Speaker 3: in the distance. And that's when I did my crying.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I really did. I thought, I'm going to do this.
- 19:38Speaker 3: And there was a time when I was running for
- 19:40Speaker 3: my friend Fred who passed away with cancer. And I
- 19:43Speaker 3: had to dig deep and just think about that as well.
- 19:47Speaker 3: It was really tough. But at the finish, I don't
- 19:49Speaker 3: know how you felt at the finish, I was elated.
- 19:52Speaker 3: How was you at the finish?
- 19:55Speaker 4: I cried. I don't cry when I'm sad. I cry
- 19:58Speaker 4: when I'm happy, when my football team win, which they
- 20:01Speaker 4: do quite a lot recently. I cry with joy. And
- 20:04Speaker 4: I was pleased for myself in the memory of my
- 20:06Speaker 4: dad and the supporters that I was just pleased. I
- 20:09Speaker 4: remember looking at the clock. I started at 6 a.m.
- 20:12Speaker 4: and it was four minutes past four. So I've been
- 20:14Speaker 4: going for 10 hours, four minutes. And that included the stops.
- 20:17Speaker 4: And I was just chuffed with myself. I had a
- 20:21Speaker 4: little tear of joy in passing that finish line. And
- 20:25Speaker 4: I was just so pleased I'd actually done it.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I can imagine. Yeah, brilliant. And so the next move,
- 20:32Speaker 3: you know, was it the next sort of an hour?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Was you on a high or was it like an anti-climax?
- 20:36Speaker 4: Well, I had something to eat. Yeah. They think they
- 20:40Speaker 4: called it because it was an ultimate challenge. They did
- 20:44Speaker 4: ultimate burgers at the end.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Oh, did they?
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 4: And so I had to have one of them. Then
- 20:48Speaker 4: a massage. And then only then did I start looking
- 20:51Speaker 4: at the journey home. And it was three changes to
- 20:54Speaker 4: get back to St. Pancras. And in the middle, there
- 20:56Speaker 4: was a bus replacement service. Oh, no. I thought, I
- 20:59Speaker 4: do not need that. So anyway, I worked out a route.
- 21:03Speaker 4: I looked at getting an Uber from Henley to St. Pancras,
- 21:06Speaker 4: but it was 100 quid. And I thought, hmm. Maybe not.
- 21:10Speaker 4: So it took me two hours to get from Henley
- 21:12Speaker 4: to St Pancras and then an hour from there home.
- 21:15Speaker 3: You didn't fall asleep and end up in Margate.
- 21:17Speaker 4: No, the trouble was sitting down, trying to stand up
- 21:21Speaker 4: again on the train was a bit more challenging Sunday evening,
- 21:24Speaker 4: but I was really glad to get home.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I bet. Okay, well, Adrian, we'll play another song
- 21:29Speaker 3: then and then we'll come back to Dave one more
- 21:30Speaker 3: time and we'll wrap it all up and we've got
- 21:32Speaker 3: some news about a little event going on tomorrow morning,
- 21:35Speaker 3: I do believe. So what have we got next, Adrian?
- 21:37Speaker 2: Okay, we've got a band from New Zealand. Is it
- 21:41Speaker 2: New Zealand or is it Australia? I can't remember. Anyway,
- 21:44Speaker 2: this is In Excess, and this one is called Mystify.
- 21:48Speaker 5: All fails and mistakes.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Streets are blue.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Almond blocks That chill divine.
- 22:03Speaker 5: Some silken moments.
- 22:26Speaker 1: The late Mick Hutchins. Put my teeth back in. Mick
- 22:30Speaker 1: Hutchins of NXS. By process of elimination, we reckon they're
- 22:34Speaker 1: from Australia. Dave whacked that one in.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Dave put us right.
- 22:38Speaker 2: He put us right.
- 22:38Speaker 3: It's good having guests putting us right. We're supposed to
- 22:40Speaker 3: know these things.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Well, we knew them from Down Under anyway. Anyway, that
- 22:44Speaker 1: was Mr. Vi by In Excess, a band I saw
- 22:47Speaker 1: in 1989. It was around that kick album. I saw
- 22:54Speaker 1: them at the Hammersmith Palais or Odeon.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Probably the Odeon, I think.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it was good anyway. Okay, Dave. Back to you
- 23:02Speaker 2: and Dave.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Right. So, Dave, last little chat with you. So you've
- 23:07Speaker 3: completed it. First of all, I think, just tell me
- 23:12Speaker 3: about one high spot and one low spot on the
- 23:15Speaker 3: two days. What's the high spot?
- 23:17Speaker 4: You know, the high spot were the people. I mean,
- 23:19Speaker 4: you and I talked about this about 10 days ago.
- 23:22Speaker 4: And the journeys that people had to get to that
- 23:24Speaker 4: start line, you know, it's bringing me out in goosebumps
- 23:27Speaker 4: talking about it now. There's just some amazing people on
- 23:30Speaker 4: that walk. And, you know, there was a lady there
- 23:33Speaker 4: of 34 whose husband had committed suicide. She had four children.
- 23:38Speaker 4: And she was there doing it and raising money for
- 23:41Speaker 4: Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, things like that. And it was
- 23:45Speaker 4: just the people with a high point. The low point
- 23:48Speaker 4: was Sunday afternoon for me. not having anybody to talk to.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:55Speaker 4: All you do is think about your aches and pains,
- 23:57Speaker 4: start thinking about yourself, not what's going on around you,
- 24:00Speaker 4: the rain, but.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Do you know what, Dave? I was talking to my Sue,
- 24:04Speaker 3: who you know very well, and I said, yeah, Dave's
- 24:07Speaker 3: going down on his own. And she said, straight away,
- 24:10Speaker 3: she said, hasn't he got anybody at the finish? I said,
- 24:13Speaker 3: I don't think so. I never thought about it. She said, oh,
- 24:15Speaker 3: after all that work, she said, you must have someone
- 24:18Speaker 3: at the finish. And now, on reflection, on my walk,
- 24:21Speaker 3: I couldn't wait to see my Sue, Pam and Kim. And, yeah,
- 24:26Speaker 3: that made a huge difference, knowing that they were there
- 24:28Speaker 3: on the finish line.
- 24:29Speaker 4: What was nice, they're very considerate at the finish, the
- 24:31Speaker 4: people that are turning up solo. So they took my
- 24:35Speaker 4: phone off me and took loads of pictures of me
- 24:37Speaker 4: at the finish.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Ah, right.
- 24:38Speaker 4: And without even asking.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:40Speaker 4: They were right on it.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 4: They're aware that there's some people that are just there solo. Right.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Now, I've been asking all the questions, but is there
- 24:47Speaker 3: anything that you want to add that's really, you know,
- 24:51Speaker 3: important to this last little chat.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Yeah, well, this month is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. As
- 24:56Speaker 4: many people know, I think there was a big promotion
- 24:57Speaker 4: in the Premier League over the last few weeks about this.
- 25:01Speaker 4: Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 50.
- 25:06Speaker 4: It's a massive, massive problem. And South Kent Mind are
- 25:11Speaker 4: aware of this. So tomorrow morning, there is a Coastal
- 25:14Speaker 4: Sunrise Walk of Hope meeting at Battery Point at 5.45pm.
- 25:20Speaker 4: And there's a lovely walk with a lot of like-minded
- 25:22Speaker 4: people down towards Folkestone Harbour. And we finish up at
- 25:26Speaker 4: Muggs at the bottom of Tontine Street. So that's the
- 25:29Speaker 4: meeting up at 5.45 at Battery Point. I think the
- 25:32Speaker 4: sunrise is around 6.45 and you're walking towards the sunrise.
- 25:37Speaker 4: So hopefully it'll be nice and sunny. I think it's
- 25:39Speaker 4: going to be dry. Hopefully it's all going to be
- 25:42Speaker 4: open again at Harbour area. So we should be OK
- 25:46Speaker 4: by then. I think we should be OK.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Good, right. Anything else, Dave?
- 25:51Speaker 4: No, that's it. And as far as my charity effort,
- 25:53Speaker 4: I'm grateful for you having me on your show. It
- 25:58Speaker 4: did go up on the day of the interview. I've
- 26:04Speaker 4: exceeded my target by 10%.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Which was how much?
- 26:07Speaker 2: It was £ 2, 000.
- 26:07Speaker 4: I'm up to £ 2, 200 plus gift aid. I'm just under 3,000
- 26:12Speaker 4: in total.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Oh, brilliant.
- 26:14Speaker 4: And I'm eternally grateful for the generous messages of support
- 26:18Speaker 4: and the donations. All corners of my contacts book.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Brilliant.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Very grateful. Thank you. Thank you to you all.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Now, Dave, before you go, one last little thing. I
- 26:26Speaker 3: want to talk about your recovery. How have you been
- 26:29Speaker 3: this week?
- 26:29Speaker 4: I'm okay. I had a sports massage on Monday. I
- 26:35Speaker 4: was hobbling around a bit. I was struggling on Monday,
- 26:38Speaker 4: to tell you the truth. I had to go and
- 26:39Speaker 4: pick my wife up from Gatwick Airport. And standing in
- 26:43Speaker 4: the arrivals area by Gatwick North was a bit challenging.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I had to sit down because my feet were sore.
- 26:51Speaker 4: But gradually, every day, I'm getting better and better. I
- 26:54Speaker 4: think that was a comedy show in the 70s, wasn't it?
- 26:57Speaker 4: And today, I actually walked. I've walked from Sandgate to here.
- 27:00Speaker 4: So that's about three miles. So that is progress.
- 27:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 4: I have been to the park run this morning, but
- 27:06Speaker 4: there was no way I was going to run it.
- 27:08Speaker 4: So today, every day I'm getting better.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Good, great.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Well, Dave, it's been a brilliant journey. Not only for you,
- 27:15Speaker 3: but for us as well. We're really pleased to support
- 27:17Speaker 3: you and Southgate Mine. And Adrian, what do you think
- 27:21Speaker 3: of all that?
- 27:21Speaker 1: Well, if I was wearing a hat, hats off to you.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I know I couldn't do it. I'm not in any
- 27:27Speaker 1: fit shape to do anything like that at the moment.
- 27:28Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, that's fantastic. And, you know, you've raised,
- 27:33Speaker 1: over £ 2, 000, which is obviously the charity's really going to,
- 27:37Speaker 1: you know, every charity needs money, but, you know, that's
- 27:40Speaker 1: a lot of money towards your charity.
- 27:41Speaker 4: And thank you, A, thank you, Kevin, for having me on.
- 27:43Speaker 4: I'm very grateful.
- 27:44Speaker 2: You're more than welcome.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Right, Adrian, let's play some music, then we might have
- 27:47Speaker 3: some time for some sport.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we might be able to fit something in. Derby
- 27:51Speaker 2: day today?
- 27:52Speaker 3: There's a game on or something, isn't there?
- 27:53Speaker 1: I think they could beat us after then. Anyway, hopefully
- 27:56Speaker 1: there's a lot of entertainment now. Talking of entertainment, this
- 27:59Speaker 1: is The Jam. Breaking the studio here. One of the
- 28:42Speaker 1: knobs come off.
- 28:43Speaker 2: There you go.
- 28:44Speaker 1: There is the jam. Paul Weller, Rick Butler and Bruce Foxton.
- 28:49Speaker 1: One of my favourite bands from the 80s. That was
- 28:52Speaker 1: from 1981. That was That's Entertainment. And entertainment is going
- 28:58Speaker 1: to hopefully be this afternoon.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Be on a high this afternoon, won't it?
- 29:00Speaker 1: At the Crabble. As I say, it's FA Cup day.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Last time we played Dover Athletic in the FA Cup.
- 29:09Speaker 1: was at the Crabble, and it was way, way back
- 29:12Speaker 1: on the 14th of October, 1989. A lot of you
- 29:16Speaker 1: people there, that's going to be there this afternoon, probably
- 29:20Speaker 1: wasn't even born when we played. When I was doing
- 29:23Speaker 1: the old commentary with Charlie, he was 20-odd years for
- 29:27Speaker 1: this league game, and he said, I wasn't even born.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I mean, that puts a bit of perspective on the game. Yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 1: we won with an Andy Allen goal.
- 29:37Speaker 2: No, it wasn't. It was Kempe. I think it was.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Can't remember anyway.
- 29:40Speaker 1: 2,165 were there that day.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I think there's going to be a lot more there.
- 29:45Speaker 3: You think so?
- 29:46Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 29:47Speaker 2: It's all tickets to Folkestone fans, apparently.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Going back, I don't know if you can remember, what
- 29:51Speaker 3: was the differential in the leagues?
- 29:52Speaker 2: Who... Well, we were both in the same division. Oh,
- 29:55Speaker 2: you were?
- 29:56Speaker 1: It was the Southern League Premier, but at that particular time,
- 29:59Speaker 1: Dover Athletic were.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Cruising.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I think they played 13-1-13 at that stage, and they
- 30:09Speaker 1: were getting great guns. This was Folkestone's last year in existence.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Oh, they were Folkestone Town then, were they?
- 30:16Speaker 2: It was just Folkestone.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah, they were Folkestone.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Was it Folkestone 19? I can't remember.
- 30:21Speaker 3: I think there were folks in town. Because folks in
- 30:24Speaker 3: Invicta were actually a side in the Kent County League,
- 30:29Speaker 3: I think it was.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's correct, yeah.
- 30:30Speaker 3: Because when I played for Dormobile... Dormobile?
- 30:33Speaker 2: Dormobile.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Northcliffe and Dormobile, yeah. We used to play against folks
- 30:37Speaker 3: in Invicta. And we always hoped that we would get...
- 30:41Speaker 3: that they could get hold of the pitch. Because back
- 30:44Speaker 3: in the day, we used to call.
- 30:45Speaker 2: It the big pitch.
- 30:46Speaker 3: And it was.
- 30:47Speaker 2: It was massive.
- 30:48Speaker 3: It was massive. Compared to the... or the postage stamp
- 30:52Speaker 3: that they've got down there now, but, so yeah, and
- 30:56Speaker 3: we did, yeah, we played them, so I know that
- 30:57Speaker 3: it was Focusing Invicta, and then the actual Focusing Invicta
- 31:01Speaker 3: from that era, they folded, and came out of the
- 31:04Speaker 3: Kent League, and I think that's when Invicta, because the
- 31:07Speaker 3: current Invicta picked up the mantle of the name, yeah.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Yeah, way back, well, just a season or so after,
- 31:13Speaker 1: wasn't it, after that, but, Yeah, 2,165. I remember going
- 31:17Speaker 1: to that game very, very well. I had my friend
- 31:19Speaker 1: over from Germany and he couldn't quite believe that non-league
- 31:23Speaker 1: football would have that many fans going to the actual game.
- 31:26Speaker 1: I can remember it was absolutely jam-packed back then, obviously.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Crabbeau is now slightly better ground than what it was
- 31:36Speaker 1: back in 1989. But, you know, it's been all ticket
- 31:40Speaker 1: for folks in the Victor fans this afternoon. I think
- 31:43Speaker 1: they gave us 1,700 tickets. I know we've... I think on...
- 31:48Speaker 1: What day was it?
- 31:49Speaker 2: It's today.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I think on Tuesday or Wednesday, I think we'd sold
- 31:53Speaker 1: about 750, 800 tickets. So I'm thinking probably whatever we've
- 31:58Speaker 1: sold between then and now, I think there'll be over.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Probably 1,000 fans, yeah.
- 32:05Speaker 1: When you first come out, and I saw they'd given
- 32:08Speaker 1: us 1,700 tickets, I thought maybe we'd get about 1,300 tickets.
- 32:12Speaker 1: And I think we're probably won't be far off that. Um,
- 32:15Speaker 1: but of course, if we win today, it will be, um,
- 32:19Speaker 1: probably about four and a half thousand people claiming they
- 32:22Speaker 1: were there. A bit like when Julian and beat, uh,
- 32:25Speaker 1: Chesterfield 10, nil, there's only two and a half thousand.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Then I was one of them, but the amount of
- 32:30Speaker 2: times I was at that game. Yeah, of course you were.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Uh, but yeah, I mean, it's, it's a massive day
- 32:35Speaker 1: today for, uh, Kent football. Um, biggest, um, because for me, uh,
- 32:41Speaker 1: I love the FA Cup, always have done. This game today,
- 32:44Speaker 1: I think, is the biggest second qualifying round game. The
- 32:48Speaker 1: BBC obviously haven't fought that because they're covering other teams.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I really thought this one would be live on TV,
- 32:54Speaker 1: but the powers that be at the BBC have decided, no,
- 32:58Speaker 1: we're not going to cover Folkestone Invicta and Dover.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I can't remember the last time Folkestone Invicta were on
- 33:05Speaker 3: the TV. It might have been, I don't know if
- 33:07Speaker 3: it was streamed when you went up to Wrexham.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Oh, Wrexham, yeah, that was a live game.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a pay-as-you-watch sort of, pay-as-you-go live stream
- 33:18Speaker 1: from Wrexham, yeah, because that was during COVID.
- 33:21Speaker 3: That's right, yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 1: In the UK, or sorry, in England, COVID had been
- 33:27Speaker 1: lifted where you could go and watch the games freely.
- 33:31Speaker 2: But in Wales, the COVID still.
- 33:34Speaker 1: still stood there so you couldn't go to you couldn't
- 33:37Speaker 1: travel to Wrexham for that game I think if we
- 33:40Speaker 1: had let our supporters in there I think we would
- 33:43Speaker 1: have taken loads and.
- 33:45Speaker 3: What role were you you were Seasiders Radio.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Yeah Seasiders Radio we were up there or I was
- 33:50Speaker 1: up there the previous chairman managed to wangle it so
- 33:57Speaker 1: I could go on the players coach to the game
- 34:01Speaker 1: because you know everything back then was you had to
- 34:03Speaker 1: sign in here You had to have COVID tests, etc. And, yeah,
- 34:07Speaker 1: I was very, very fortunate enough to be sitting in
- 34:09Speaker 1: the media box next to the commentator that does BBC
- 34:14Speaker 1: Radio Wales. He does Wrexham every week as well. And
- 34:19Speaker 1: a legend, Mickey Thomas, that used to play for Man United.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Mickey Thomas, yeah.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Wales. And, yeah, he actually bought me a cup of tea.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Did he? Did you keep the cup?
- 34:29Speaker 2: No, it was a disgraceful one. And I had You've
- 34:32Speaker 2: got me a packet of custard creams. Oh, dear.
- 34:35Speaker 3: What a bonus.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean, you know, today's FA Cup, I mean,
- 34:41Speaker 1: there's a few quid on it for whoever wins, but
- 34:44Speaker 1: I don't think anybody's really worried about the money side
- 34:46Speaker 1: of it. It's just bragging rights, isn't it? Last time
- 34:50Speaker 1: we played there a couple of seasons ago, we won 3-2.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Quite an outstanding game that was. It was blood and
- 34:56Speaker 1: thunder and guts. I'm sure it'll be much the same
- 34:59Speaker 1: this afternoon.
- 35:00Speaker 3: You know, I've played at the Crabble. I've played for
- 35:03Speaker 3: the High Reserves. And, I mean, it's got a beautiful,
- 35:06Speaker 3: beautiful playing surface. But I don't know what it's like now,
- 35:09Speaker 3: but it was on a slope.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:11Speaker 3: The actual surface is wonderful, but it was a slope.
- 35:14Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 35:15Speaker 2: I think they've tried to iron that out a little
- 35:16Speaker 2: bit since, you know, way back in our day.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Yeah, a long time ago, yeah.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I remember playing there for folks in youth many, many
- 35:23Speaker 2: years ago. 81, I think it was back then. Yeah,
- 35:26Speaker 2: that was.
- 35:30Speaker 2: It was a bit of a quagmire then, I must admit.
- 35:33Speaker 3: But this time of year, I mean, the pitches are... Well,
- 35:35Speaker 3: hopefully they're just the grass pitches that are around instead
- 35:37Speaker 3: of so many... Yeah, I mean... They're just recovering, aren't they?
- 35:41Speaker 2: They are.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I mean, we've had a really hot summer, haven't we?
- 35:43Speaker 1: And a lot of the pitches of... Or a lot
- 35:45Speaker 1: of grass in and around Kent have been scorched to.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Well, certainly, I know for a fact that certainly the
- 35:51Speaker 3: local rugby scene, they put the season back two weeks
- 35:53Speaker 3: because the pitches were in such a state. And it
- 35:56Speaker 3: looks like it's paid off because we all know... how
- 35:59Speaker 3: much those of us that have got front and back lawns,
- 36:01Speaker 3: how much they are recovering.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:03Speaker 3: It's been a great summer because I haven't had to
- 36:05Speaker 3: cut the lawn once, you know, because there's nothing to cut.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Yeah, me neither, but that's probably due to being concrete
- 36:12Speaker 2: out in the back garden. OK, we'll sing another song on.
- 36:15Speaker 1: I've got to play this one. This one is called
- 36:18Speaker 1: Two Tribes Go to War. This is Frankie, Ghost Hollywood.
- 36:22Speaker 1: I wonder who this is for this afternoon.
- 36:29Speaker 5: Frankie goes to Hollywood 1984 and Two Tribes.
- 36:53Speaker 2: What a.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Great choice, Adrian, actually. Two tribes go to war. Just
- 37:01Speaker 3: imagine if the two chairmen kind of had a little
- 37:04Speaker 3: punch-up in the centre circle instead of playing the game,
- 37:07Speaker 3: you know.
- 37:07Speaker 1: I'd be 100% behind Josh Healy on that one, I
- 37:10Speaker 1: can tell you.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that'd be quite interesting. Half-time entertainment we could have. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:16Speaker 3: A couple of rounds each.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Yeah, Jim Palmiter versus Josh Healy.
- 37:21Speaker 2: In the blue corner.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I tell you what, that would be fantastic. Get him
- 37:26Speaker 1: in those sumo suits or something.
- 37:28Speaker 2: That would be really funny. I don't mean it, Josh, honestly. Yeah, OK.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Just a little thing while we're going on about folks
- 37:35Speaker 1: in Evicta. And Scarborough, I suppose. Last year, Scarborough sponsored
- 37:43Speaker 1: Adi Youssef, one of the folks in Evicta players who
- 37:45Speaker 1: has since been moved on to Cray Wanderers now. But
- 37:48Speaker 1: we sponsored him and we was given a shirt at
- 37:51Speaker 1: the end of the season. of course I put it
- 37:53Speaker 1: in the Scarborough raffle last week and for the Scarborough
- 37:58Speaker 1: weekend and it was won by a friend called Mark
- 38:03Speaker 1: he won the shirt and he said it's a medium
- 38:08Speaker 1: and he says I'm triple XL at best he said
- 38:13Speaker 1: so please have it he said and auction it off
- 38:17Speaker 1: and he says I know you do your radio station
- 38:18Speaker 1: he said see what funds you can raise for so
- 38:21Speaker 1: I've put it on the Seasider Radio Facebook page this morning.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Somebody had offered me £ 30 for it, so I put
- 38:27Speaker 1: that on there. And now, you know, highest bidder wins it.
- 38:31Speaker 1: And I'm going to read it out next Saturday at
- 38:33Speaker 1: the Salisbury City game at half-time, who the actual highest
- 38:37Speaker 1: bidder is. And so far, it's now up to £ 100. Oh,
- 38:40Speaker 1: that's good, yeah. So if you would like to bid
- 38:43Speaker 1: on that, £ 100 is the going rate so far. As
- 38:47Speaker 1: I say, go to Seasiders Radio on Facebook. excellent no
- 38:52Speaker 1: Seasiders radio coming from Dover this afternoon they have refused
- 38:57Speaker 1: permission for me to broadcast Lee said about that probably
- 39:00Speaker 1: the better but I shall be in the away end
- 39:03Speaker 1: with all the other folks in Invicta fans this afternoon
- 39:05Speaker 1: cheering on the boys and we'll be wearing all blue.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Today yeah be a nice change for you I think
- 39:10Speaker 3: Adrian actually.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Do you know what I was trying to think the
- 39:12Speaker 1: last time I actually went to a folks in Invicta
- 39:14Speaker 1: game where I wasn't you know working.
- 39:17Speaker 3: In a box or something in the box yeah.
- 39:19Speaker 1: And actually having to to pay the admission families as well.
- 39:23Speaker 1: But yeah, I honestly can't remember. I think it was,
- 39:26Speaker 1: I can't honestly can't remember.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Years ago. Yeah.
- 39:29Speaker 1: A few years ago, but, uh, I should be back
- 39:31Speaker 1: next Saturday in the, um, media box down at Salisbury city.
- 39:35Speaker 1: So unfortunately next Saturday, I won't be here as I'll
- 39:39Speaker 1: be on the way to Salisbury.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Salisbury Hill.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Salisbury Hill.
- 39:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 39:43Speaker 1: I went past there when I went to Torquay the
- 39:45Speaker 1: other week. Uh, We got a bit of a detour
- 39:47Speaker 1: and had to go past Stonehenge.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Did you? That A road. Do you know what?
- 39:52Speaker 3: I didn't know that Salisbury Hill was an actual place.
- 39:56Speaker 3: I did have a question come up in a quiz,
- 39:58Speaker 3: I think, and it was about Salisbury Hill. And I
- 40:02Speaker 3: didn't know it was down by Southend. I just thought
- 40:04Speaker 3: it was something they made up in a song. Peter Gabriel,
- 40:07Speaker 3: wasn't it?
- 40:07Speaker 2: Peter Gabriel, yeah. That was a classic from 70-something or other.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Okay, well, we've come to the end here this morning on...
- 40:15Speaker 1: Radio Folkestone 105.9 FM.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Well, I won't be back on Thursday, but I'll be
- 40:22Speaker 3: here on Saturday. And so, you know, just because Adrian's away,
- 40:26Speaker 3: we like to keep the show going as often as
- 40:27Speaker 3: we can. So please tune in next Saturday. And in
- 40:30Speaker 3: the meantime, I'll see if I can find a guest.
- 40:32Speaker 3: I've got nothing in at the moment, but you never know.
- 40:34Speaker 3: I might find someone. And I must say that today's guest, Dave,
- 40:39Speaker 3: was such a good speaker. He did such a good job.
- 40:42Speaker 3: after such a big, massive challenge. Yeah, so hats off
- 40:45Speaker 3: to him. And South Kent Mind.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Yeah, South Kent Mind, also one of the charities that
- 40:52Speaker 1: Scarborough support as well. So there'll be a few quid
- 40:56Speaker 1: on their way to South Kent Mind.
- 40:57Speaker 3: That is nice.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I didn't realise that was one of his charities.
- 41:01Speaker 3: He's a trustee.
- 41:03Speaker 2: So, yeah, we will be making a donation to them
- 41:05Speaker 2: very shortly from Scarborough.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Brilliant.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Okay. I'm going to finish off.
- 41:09Speaker 1: You've probably got less than a minute of this one,
- 41:11Speaker 1: but this one is Holly Johnson and the Americanos. As
- 41:14Speaker 1: Kev said, he won't be here Thursday, but he will
- 41:16Speaker 1: be back next Saturday, and I'll be back in two
- 41:19Speaker 1: weeks' time.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Take care, and we'll see you all then. Take care.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Bye for now.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Bye-see-bye.
- 41:24Speaker 5: Americanos
