Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. I hope you guys had a good
- 0:24weekend. I finally got some sleep last
- 0:27week. I was in the trenches.
- 0:28I didn't mention it on Minnie scroll, but I literally had the
- 0:31worst insomnia all week. I have no idea why I slept maybe
- 0:35like 2 hours every single night. But I'm very happy to report
- 0:38that this weekend I caught up. I literally did nothing.
- 0:42I just slept and watched TV and snuggled with my dog and I got
- 0:47all caught up and I'm feeling much better, much more revived.
- 0:50OK, before I get into it, I actually do have an exciting
- 0:52announcement. So for the past, a lot of you
- 0:56guys have been asking on and off if we would ever do extra
- 1:00content paid like in a Patreon capacity or something like that.
- 1:04And we've been thinking about what next year looks like for
- 1:06us. And I have come to the decision
- 1:09that we are going to be launching A Patreon.
- 1:11So all of our content is staying the same.
- 1:13I don't want anyone to panic. I don't want anyone to think
- 1:15that we're putting anything that currently exists for free behind
- 1:18a pay wall. This is all staying the same.
- 1:21But from December we're going to be doing extra content.
- 1:24So three pieces of extra content every single month.
- 1:27We're going to be having a members only Discord and a bunch
- 1:29of other perks. And that content is actually not
- 1:32going to be pop culture, Internet culture related.
- 1:35So that content will be a lot more parasocial, mostly with
- 1:40myself, a little bit with the team as well.
- 1:42So you guys can expect vlogs, Q&A's, like advice, chatty
- 1:47episodes with myself and some other guests, things that you
- 1:50guys wouldn't get normally through our content.
- 1:52So I'm not going to put a link yet because Patreon has actually
- 1:56updated their billing system this year.
- 1:58I was looking into it. You actually cannot sign up
- 2:00without paying immediately anymore because of like some
- 2:03Apple iOS update. So that wouldn't be fair to you
- 2:06guys because we're not starting it until December, but it is
- 2:09starting in December instead of January because we are obviously
- 2:12going on our typical like podcast holiday break.
- 2:15But over the holidays, I will be giving you guys 3 mini scrolls
- 2:19through Patreon. So anyways, I will talk to you
- 2:21guys more about that when the Patreon is officially live and
- 2:24I'm comfortable with you guys signing up because right now I
- 2:26don't want you guys to sign up and pay immediately and then,
- 2:29you know, you guys don't get content this month.
- 2:30So yeah, it's very pretty exciting.
- 2:32And if you guys have any recommendations or things you
- 2:34want to see from the Patreon, let me know because I'm open.
- 2:38All right, before we get into it, Please remember to rate,
- 2:40review and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 2:43We're trying to get to 1000 Spotify star ratings by the end
- 2:46of the year. The first story that I have for
- 2:48you guys is I'm going to be talking about how creator Elise
- 2:51Myers has been embroiled in some book release drama this week.
- 2:56So Elise Myers is a creator who found a lot of fame on TikTok in
- 3:00its earlier days. She racked up over 7 million
- 3:03followers on the platform. She mostly makes mental health
- 3:06content, relationship content like story times about past
- 3:09relationships, current relationship stuff, lifestyle
- 3:12content, all of that. And she has mostly moved to
- 3:17YouTube blogging. At least she did for about a
- 3:19year because she took an extended hiatus from TikTok
- 3:23around early 2024. This hiatus was partly due to
- 3:26her health issues, and it was also partly due to some
- 3:30criticism that she faced for basically not using her massive
- 3:33platform to speak out on atrocities such as the genocide
- 3:37in Palestine and where she stood on certain social and political
- 3:41issues. Elise has now made her way back
- 3:43into the online zeitgeist after that hiatus because she released
- 3:46a book called That's a Great Question I'd Love to Tell You,
- 3:50which is basically a collection of personal essays and stories.
- 3:53So this week a creator named Allison post on Threads.
- 3:56Sorry I just need to say again with the threads drama.
- 3:59Like there's so much going down on threads I can't believe it.
- 4:02And she said that she didn't really vibe with Elise's book so
- 4:06she wrote no. I'm so sad.
- 4:08I don't like this book at all. Has anyone else tried reading
- 4:10it? It's not at all like the story
- 4:12she tells in her videos. I'm on the 5th essay and I think
- 4:15I have to stop reading it. Oh, important to note here she
- 4:17didn't tag Elise. OK.
- 4:19But even still, the platform pushed the review to Elise's
- 4:22page and then Elise responded to this review.
- 4:25She wrote Instagram. I am decided to put this in my
- 4:27feed as a post I might like. So now I'm here.
- 4:30I'm bummed you don't like it, but not at all offended.
- 4:33Everyone has different tastes in books and that's OK.
- 4:35Please feel free to return it. So this has sparked a huge
- 4:40discussion about the concept of authors with big platforms
- 4:44responding to reviews of their book publicly.
- 4:47Given it could encourage a pile on of hate towards someone who
- 4:49didn't give it a positive review, which unfortunately is
- 4:52what happened in this case. So the original creator started
- 4:56getting inundated with Elise stands in her comment section
- 5:00basically telling her that she is, you know, being super rude
- 5:03that this is not fair whatever. And then in response to that, a
- 5:07lot of book related creators and people that are really into the
- 5:10reading community online started piling on a lease for not
- 5:14understanding the etiquette of authors basically not responding
- 5:17to reviews of their book to keep reviews honest.
- 5:20Because that's what can happen obviously, right?
- 5:22Like if people are scared to post a review honestly about a
- 5:25book because they're worried that that author who has a big
- 5:28platform is going to see it and respond to it.
- 5:29And then they're going to get a ton of hate.
- 5:31Like they will either not post reviews or they'll only post
- 5:34positive things or whatever. So Elise responded to someone
- 5:36saying, I don't know if you took the time to look at my responses
- 5:39to that thread, but in no way was I upset that she didn't like
- 5:42my book. I told her that I was bummed but
- 5:44not offended at all and encouraged her to return the
- 5:46book. I'm confused where you think I
- 5:48acted weirdly? So it's become this double
- 5:51dogpile on now where the initial reviewer is getting inundated
- 5:55with hate from Elise's fans and then Elise is getting inundated
- 5:59with criticism from people who are saying that she didn't have
- 6:02proper, kind of like, author etiquette.
- 6:04I mean, at the end of the day, all the original creator did was
- 6:07post an honest review of the book.
- 6:08She was genuinely sad that she didn't like the book.
- 6:11It was nothing, you know, rude against Elise.
- 6:13And I think we need to be able to critique art and content,
- 6:16especially in this instance. Like I said, this is not a
- 6:19critique of a lease as a creator or even her as a person where it
- 6:22feels kind of parasocial, like it's a critique of her book.
- 6:27Every author would anticipate reviews, whether positive or
- 6:30negative of their book if they are putting art out into the
- 6:33world. Like critique is part of
- 6:35engaging in art. I think one of the interesting
- 6:37things about Elise is she actually is very divisive, but
- 6:41you can tell that she really doesn't mean to be and she
- 6:43doesn't want to be. There is this subset of Internet
- 6:46users who think she is like the most wholesome, sweetest creator
- 6:50on TikTok. And then there's this subset who
- 6:52thinks she kind of plays into white women tears and this like
- 6:56act of innocence. And especially when she receives
- 6:59criticism or any type of feedback that's not completely
- 7:02positive. And part of the reason why I
- 7:04think some people feel like her personality is a shtick is
- 7:07because her fan base really infantilizes her.
- 7:10And we know from experience, you know, we've seen fan bases
- 7:13infantilize tons of stars. Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez,
- 7:16those are two that come to mind off the top of my head.
- 7:19But we've seen it time and time again.
- 7:20I think when fan bases infantilize creators or
- 7:24celebrities, it's basically a losing situation.
- 7:27The creator is very protected or the celebrity is very protected
- 7:30because their fan base doesn't really see them as almost like a
- 7:32full blown adult with agency who is running a business making
- 7:37strategic decisions. And therefore it can almost be
- 7:40really dangerous from an online perspective to criticize that
- 7:43person because you never know what type of behavior you'll
- 7:46elicit or receive, I suppose from the fan base because they
- 7:51actually don't really see this person as an adult who is making
- 7:56their own decisions. And I don't think that's
- 7:58necessarily conscious. Like I don't think that fan
- 8:00bases of whether it's Elise Myers, Selena Gomez, Ariana
- 8:04Grande, anybody else that is somewhat infantilized by their
- 8:06fan base. I don't think that their fans
- 8:09are intentionally trying to think of them like this and
- 8:12intentionally acting like this. It just kind of ends up being a
- 8:15bit of like mob mentality. And I think it just kind of
- 8:17comes out that way. Whatever's happened in their
- 8:20career or whatever they've told us throughout their career that
- 8:23has made us feel like they are either a victim or you know,
- 8:27they're like the best person ever and we must protect them.
- 8:29Like whatever that narrative is, I don't think it's always like
- 8:32the fans fault, you know, like I don't think it's like
- 8:35intentional all the time, but I think that happens.
- 8:37OK, the next story that I have for you guys, I cannot believe
- 8:41I'm about to talk about this, but I'm going to be talking
- 8:43about the hair by Chrissy stuff going on on TikTok.
- 8:46I cannot believe I'm about to talk about hair by Chrissy in
- 8:502025. One of Centennial's most viral
- 8:53videos on TikTok of all time is a video that we made like at the
- 8:57beginning of 2020 about hair by Chrissy.
- 9:00It was when influencers were going to her salon throughout,
- 9:02you know, the beginning of TikTok basically, and she was
- 9:04blowing up and they were blowing up all together and the
- 9:07influencers were getting these ginormous heavy heads of
- 9:10extensions. And everybody was like, that
- 9:14doesn't look good. Your hair looks dead and the
- 9:18extensions look so bad. And I'm not saying her
- 9:21extensions look bad. I'm just saying this is what
- 9:22people felt like at the time. And so people started calling
- 9:25her hair by crispy. And then she also faced a lot of
- 9:29backlash around that same year for not following mask mandates
- 9:33and like COVID regulations and her salon.
- 9:35So yeah, she has had a lot of controversy over the years, but
- 9:39it's been like 5 years since she was relevant enough or like
- 9:43whatever was going on in her salon was relevant enough to
- 9:45talk about. So you know, here we are.
- 9:47So this is what's happening right now.
- 9:49I TikTok creator at Not famous 808 went viral this weekend when
- 9:53she made numerous videos saying she paid over 4200 dollars,
- 9:58$4200. I can't even for a hair
- 10:01appointment with Chrissy. However, she left feeling
- 10:05disappointed and misled because Chrissy was not really the one
- 10:09who did her hair. So not famous eight O 8.
- 10:11She booked an appointment with Chrissy at her salon, Habit
- 10:13Salon that she obviously sees all over Tiktok.
- 10:17And here are some of the issues she had.
- 10:18OK, she said she expected nearly white blonde extensions like she
- 10:22brought in a photo that she wanted to emulate.
- 10:24She wanted basically nearly white blonde extensions.
- 10:27But she says the result was darker, especially at the roots.
- 10:30She also said she was pressured into buying a new extensions
- 10:33from the salon despite bringing her own.
- 10:35However, her biggest issue and what has become the point of
- 10:38conversation is she paid $2974.00 for what the receipt
- 10:44called the Chrissy service. However, the creator claims that
- 10:48Chrissy only touched her hair for basically 60 seconds while
- 10:52roughly 10 assistants did the majority of the work.
- 10:54The creator went on to say she believes that happened because
- 10:57she's not a famous influencer. And she also said this one was
- 11:00like TikTok land and Chrissy got herself into all of the content
- 11:04as if she was doing everybody's hair when really she wasn't
- 11:08first. Get your hair done.
- 11:10It's a little bit overwhelming because everyone's kind of
- 11:14grabbing your hair everywhere. There's like 10 people around
- 11:18you and Chrissy's nowhere to be found.
- 11:21I think she might have touched my hair for 60 seconds.
- 11:24I'm being so genuinely honest with you.
- 11:28And here's the receipt. So that is just the price of
- 11:36Chrissy touching your hair. I don't think it's talked about
- 11:39enough. When you're not famous and you
- 11:42go to Chrissy, she doesn't actually spend time on your
- 11:44hair. She'll you walk in, she touches
- 11:47your hair, ask you what you want, then she tells everyone
- 11:49what to do on your hair. But the problem is when you have
- 11:5210 people pulling your hair every way and like dyeing your
- 11:55hair, they're all kind of on different pages.
- 11:58OK, so these videos have sparked a lot of interesting
- 12:01conversation online. First, there are a lot of people
- 12:03who are like, OK, don't really feel bad for you that you can
- 12:06afford a $4000 hair appointment. Like I don't know what you want
- 12:09me to say. This is not a real problem.
- 12:11And also, did you really expect Chrissy to be doing your hair?
- 12:14Because you know at the end of the day she is like a celebrity
- 12:17influencer hair artist. And if you are not a celebrity
- 12:21or an influencer, why would you expect Chrissy to be doing your
- 12:24hair? So that is like 1 camp of
- 12:26people. There's another camp of people
- 12:28that feel like Chrissy charging $4000 for hair is literally
- 12:32outrageous and predatory. And then there's this third
- 12:34group of people who feel like if Chrissy can command that amount
- 12:37of money for her services, then why not?
- 12:40Funny enough, Tana Mojo is someone who has spoken out about
- 12:43the situation and she seems to fall mostly into the second
- 12:46camp. So here's what she said.
- 12:48I just want to know what happened first of all from COVID
- 12:51to now. How do you go from hair by
- 12:54crispy to then being back in the space that you're able to charge
- 13:00people $4000 to do hair? First of all, I just want to say
- 13:04that the layers that she left the girl with are a hate crime.
- 13:09I don't, I don't even know how else to say it, Like the layers
- 13:13of her hair and she claims that like she, like you let her walk
- 13:16out of that salon with those layers.
- 13:18Secondarily, I'm going to say I feel like the high end price for
- 13:23that job and those things is like $3000.
- 13:28Four is crazy. 4 is also crazy. If you are not leaving with
- 13:33something that looks like four, $950 to move your extensions up,
- 13:40I could go down the street and start walking until I found one
- 13:44of those Uber Eats robots and I could teach the Uber Eats robot
- 13:49within 45 seconds to move my extensions up.
- 13:53I can move extensions up toddlers.
- 13:55Toddlers and tiaras can move extensions up.
- 13:58Lethal. That is a lethal level of
- 14:02scamming. That is surviving hair by
- 14:04Chrissy level scamming. I'm so sorry.
- 14:06So regardless of where you fall here, I think Chrissy should
- 14:11definitely be more transparent about who will be doing the
- 14:14client services. Like from what I understand in
- 14:17the contract that the client signed before seeing Chrissy, it
- 14:21says that other stylists will be doing their hair too.
- 14:24But I think calling the service Chrissy service is misleading,
- 14:29even if in the contract in like the fine print or whatever, it
- 14:32says otherwise. So Chrissy has responded to the
- 14:35backlash. I'm actually not surprised that
- 14:37she responded this way based on some of the controversies that I
- 14:40mentioned at the beginning and kind of how she's responded to
- 14:43things in the past. She didn't directly respond yet,
- 14:45but she has teased that she's going to release merch on her
- 14:48social media and it's T-shirts that say hair in four Ki.
- 14:53Don't think that's the best way to respond.
- 14:54I think it's kind of unprofessional, but OK.
- 14:57OK, before I get into the last story, I wanted to get your
- 15:01guys's opinion because I was considering covering Colleen
- 15:05Ballinger on Raven Symone's podcast.
- 15:08I partly didn't want to beat a dead horse because we have
- 15:10talked about Colleen Ballinger and what happened in her whole
- 15:13scandal like a million times on this podcast.
- 15:16So I didn't want to beat a dead horse, but also I didn't
- 15:19necessarily want to give her a platform and I wasn't sure if
- 15:23you guys wanted that either. So if you guys want me to talk
- 15:27about that tomorrow, share my opinions, you know, give a recap
- 15:30so you don't have to listen to it yourselves for sure.
- 15:33Let me know. I will do that.
- 15:34But I'm open to hearing your opinions on that.
- 15:36OK, the last story that I wanted to talk about, Speaking of fans,
- 15:40we're talking a lot about like fandom.
- 15:42Recently on the pod, Ariana Grande was charged by a fan at
- 15:46the Wicked for Good premiere in Singapore.
- 15:48So Ariana Grande was walking the red carpet with the cast of the
- 15:51Wicked for Good premiere in Singapore when a fan jumped the
- 15:54barricade, charged towards her, grabbed her and wrapped his arms
- 15:59around her. The man who did this is named
- 16:01Johnson Wen. He's actually Australian and he
- 16:04goes by Pajama Man on social media.
- 16:06And this is something he does. He crashes celebrity events.
- 16:09He accosts celebrities on red carpets.
- 16:12Obviously it's for social media fame and attention and virality.
- 16:15Where was security? I I was really surprised to see
- 16:18that he was able to even jump the barricade.
- 16:20Like these are ginormous celebrities.
- 16:22This is a huge event. I understand they can't have
- 16:25security lined up like, you know, 1 by 1 down the barricade,
- 16:29but I don't know. I couldn't believe that they
- 16:31didn't even catch him before he got to her.
- 16:34And the unfortunate reality is it's gone so viral, it's given
- 16:38this Jonathan guy exactly what he wants.
- 16:40He has been charged in Singapore with public nuisance, which
- 16:44holds penalties of up to three months in jail, a maximum fine
- 16:48of 2000 Singapore dollars, or both.
- 16:51However, at the end of the day, like clearly what this man cares
- 16:54about is attention, viral reality, the fame of it all.
- 16:58There are news articles all about him now.
- 17:01I mean, obviously we're talking about him, Not that, you know,
- 17:03not that MIDI scroll talking about him makes a big
- 17:06difference, but you know what I mean?
- 17:07Like, he's getting the attention, unfortunately, that
- 17:10he wants from this. And, you know, at the cost of
- 17:13Ariana Grande's mental health because we know that she has
- 17:17trauma when it comes to fan behavior and her career in
- 17:22general. And I've seen a lot of discourse
- 17:24online about this. And like, I don't know if I'm
- 17:26just on the toxic side of the Internet of the algorithm, but
- 17:30there seems to be a lot of people who are saying that she
- 17:32overreacted and played kind of like the poor little girl victim
- 17:36here. And I mean, first of all, I
- 17:38would say I don't think that if you have something that shocking
- 17:41and scary happening in the moment, like I don't think you
- 17:43can control your reaction. You can't manipulate your
- 17:45reaction. Like that is just how she
- 17:47reacted. That is like her, that was her
- 17:49natural. That was like her body going
- 17:51into the fight or flight survival mode.
- 17:52That's like what she did. So that was her reaction.
- 17:54OK? That's what I believe.
- 17:56And also, like I said, she has like, literal PTSD from
- 17:59Manchester and unhinged fan behavior in general.
- 18:02And I feel so bad for her. I'm sure that that was a
- 18:06horrifying moment for her and very scary.
- 18:08And yeah, so this man got this like, viral moment, 15 minutes
- 18:12of fame at what cost? I know we've done a few
- 18:15different episodes covering fan behavior here and there,
- 18:19different elements of fan behavior, but we've never really
- 18:21done one that truly looked at online culture and fan behavior
- 18:26and kind of exhibitionism, I suppose, around fan behavior and
- 18:30trying to reach that virality. And that is something that maybe
- 18:33we will explore in 2026 because I think it's unfortunately
- 18:37happening more and more, especially with the rise of
- 18:39TikTok. And I think it's really
- 18:41something that we need to be examining and paying attention
- 18:44to because it's not good. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 18:48mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 18:50I love you guys. Please remember to rate review
- 18:53and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 18:55I love you guys. Let me know if you guys want me
- 18:57to cover the Colleen Ballinger stuff tomorrow and I will talk
- 18:59to you tomorrow. Bye.
