- 0:00Hello and welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:02We're thrilled to be able to talk about the book of Alma
- 0:04today. His blessings to his son, Corrie
- 0:06Anton. It takes over 4 chapters.
- 0:09I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, and this is.
- 0:11I'm Jack Welch. And these chapters are just
- 0:15powerful message for all of us on repentance, the questions
- 0:19that His Son had on the resurrection, the timing of the
- 0:23resurrection, the restoration of good and bad, and the plan of
- 0:27mercy of our Savior. These are questions that I think
- 0:31are not unique to Him. And I hope that you can find
- 0:35answers to your questions and your prayers in the text this
- 0:38week as you study. These chapters are very
- 0:42impressive and I can't think of a time when I have tried to
- 0:47wrestle with a text been more rewarding, deeper and more
- 0:54logically eloquent as it moves from one point to another.
- 0:59The inspiration and the guidance of this building on a whole line
- 1:05of prophecies and words. Starting Back with Jacob talks
- 1:10about some of these concepts and then Abinadai and others.
- 1:13And Alma compiles them all. And for you to say that as an
- 1:17attorney who likes to have evidence and to prove a point
- 1:20can see in this text of Alma drawing on his forefathers
- 1:24because the Angel told him. Remember your forefathers to put
- 1:28together this theological doctrinal masterpiece in this
- 1:33blessing to his son Corianton, who was very young.
- 1:38We're told Heelman was in his youth, so this means this fellow
- 1:41is probably in his late teens or something.
- 1:43Absolutely, and Alma liked to use the word plan probably more
- 1:47than anyone else. Yes, and we'll come across that
- 1:50so many times. The plan of redemption.
- 1:52The plan of mercy. And back in Alma chapter 12 and
- 1:5813 in Amaniah, he talks about the plan of redemption, the plan
- 2:02of redemption. There's seven times there that
- 2:04he talks about this plan of redemption.
- 2:08But now what he realizes is that the process of redemption and
- 2:13the plan of God is not just at one instantaneous thing, but it
- 2:18it goes through a series of steps of progression.
- 2:22And that's why he now will talk about many different parts of
- 2:26that plan and call each one a plan.
- 2:29And we'll talk about that as we come across them, each one in
- 2:32each verse. So read carefully and.
- 2:34Let's go and look for that. Where?
- 2:35Do we start with chapter 39? Well, this is sort of amazing.
- 2:43We've got 8 1/2 pages on this one.
- 2:47Blessing to this son who's a little wayward.
- 2:50And the first chapter is a called Repentance.
- 2:52And he's, he does something that I would never have done as a
- 2:55parent. He says, why don't you look at
- 2:56your brother for a good example? I, I don't think that works in
- 2:59our generation. Maybe it did then, but it sounds
- 3:01as if his son had left the mission field.
- 3:03Well, first of all, it says in verse two, he was boasting.
- 3:06So there's the first problem is there's a little pride.
- 3:08He's boasting of his strength and his wisdom.
- 3:10And then in verse three, he forsakes the ministry.
- 3:12He actually leaves the mission. He leaves their country and goes
- 3:16over to the Lamanite lands after a harlot, Isabel.
- 3:19Now, some people have suggested this may have been an ideology
- 3:24rather than a a harlot in our definition, but whatever it is,
- 3:29it is a gross enough sin that he needs to talk about repentance
- 3:32in very clear fashion. Also, we, we mentioned last
- 3:35time, you know, that Helaman is probably around 20 or in his
- 3:39early 20s. That means Coriantin is probably
- 3:43maybe 1716. I don't know.
- 3:47But he can't be very old. And, and you know, in our youth,
- 3:51we do foolish things. The Lord is merciful and we
- 3:56learn. And maybe that's part of the
- 4:00reason that Alma is, is wanting to be sure that Coriantin has
- 4:05repented successfully. He realizes that seriousness of
- 4:10what had happened. And he does repent successfully.
- 4:13We hear that he goes out and serves a mission.
- 4:15We hear that he does other great things.
- 4:16We hear his name again and again.
- 4:18So we start, though, with the importance of repentance.
- 4:21Well, and he also lists the importance of sexual purity.
- 4:25He says this is such, this is verse five and six.
- 4:29And he says this is such a horrific sin in the sight of
- 4:34God, and he rates them. He says, you know, the only two
- 4:37that are worse are murder and the denying of the Holy Ghost.
- 4:40And that is unpardonable. And he also, you know, makes
- 4:44clear that you have to realize that you can't hide.
- 4:48And most sexual sins are are, of course, done in private.
- 4:52And you think, well, nobody's watching or something like that.
- 4:55But first thing Alma says is you cannot hide.
- 5:00Your sins, he says, will stand as a testimony against you.
- 5:04So I think that that's a very sobering reality.
- 5:09Now, they may not stand against you in this life, but Alma will
- 5:12talk about the resurrection and about things that there's more
- 5:16beyond just this life. And I think it's partly to say
- 5:19there's there's not going to be a place where sin will not be
- 5:23uncovered. It will all be open.
- 5:25The books will be open. Our lives will be open.
- 5:29And and then the real justice and mercy of God can be done.
- 5:33In fact, he says, I don't want to dwell on your crimes.
- 5:36Let's move on to repent. And then he talks about
- 5:40repentance. And I love this definition of
- 5:43repentance. I'm going to start in verse 13,
- 5:46that ye turn to the Lord with all your mind, might and
- 5:50strength, and that ye lead away the hearts of no more to do
- 5:53wickedly, but rather return unto them and acknowledge your faults
- 5:57and that wrong you have done. Remember, his sin also led the
- 6:00missionary work to fail. It wasn't just a personal sin.
- 6:03It affected his Father's ministry.
- 6:05It affected all 7 companions. And I think that's quite
- 6:08remarkable that here, Alma, he had trouble there in Antionem
- 6:13and it turns out to be really bad.
- 6:16And he does remind Corry Anton that, you know, this was a
- 6:19problem and maybe would would have done better.
- 6:23But he doesn't dwell on that and he doesn't hold that against
- 6:27him. He just wants to be sure that
- 6:29repentance and mercy and justice all are properly served.
- 6:34And I think sometimes we're, you know, we're too quick to judge.
- 6:38You hurt me by doing that. And we, we are generous and I
- 6:42think Alma really does model generosity here.
- 6:46I love the fact that he knows how to repent so well because he
- 6:49has had to do it so deeply. Look at that.
- 6:51Yeah, he's been there. And that's why he says you've
- 6:54got to have your whole mind and strength and might, you know,
- 6:58this is not just haphazardly. OK, I won't do it again.
- 7:01Absolutely not. Repentance is a desire in your
- 7:05heart to only serve God. You have no more will to do
- 7:08evil. And I think it's powerful that
- 7:10then in verse 15, he turns to talk about the coming of Christ,
- 7:15because the whole way that we can repent is when we understand
- 7:19our Savior as a Redeemer. And he describes that he will
- 7:24take away the sins of the world and that this glad tidings of
- 7:27his salvation. That's all verse 15, but going
- 7:31down to verse 17, behold, I say unto you, is not one soul at
- 7:36this time as precious unto God as another?
- 7:39So the Father knew his Son's questions and his son was
- 7:42asking, when's the timing of the resurrection?
- 7:44And he goes on. The whole chapter 40 is all on
- 7:46this timing of the resurrection. Well, and it's not just the
- 7:54timing. It's the fact of what was it,
- 7:56you know, How does this work? But I think part of Cory Anton's
- 7:59question here is, are we as important as people who live?
- 8:03Who will live after the coming of Christ?
- 8:05Or will we receive the same grace that they will receive?
- 8:08How can we take advantage of an atonement that hasn't happened
- 8:11yet? Or if it's so important, why
- 8:15haven't we been brought into the why hasn't Christ come yet?
- 8:19So he's, he's concerned about the timing of his coming, but it
- 8:23has to do. The answer to his question is
- 8:27that is not a soul at this time as precious unto God as the soul
- 8:32will be at the time of his coming.
- 8:34In other words, our time before the coming of Christ, we're just
- 8:38as important as people afterward.
- 8:41And I think that that is an interesting introduction to what
- 8:46we might call dispensationalism, that we believe in different
- 8:50dispensations of the gospel and that the world Jesus will come
- 8:54in the Meridian of time, but there will be lots of
- 8:57dispensations and that they are all equally important to God.
- 9:02So I, I, I like what he says here.
- 9:06And I can understand why Coriantan might have had that as
- 9:11a question. How's this going to really work?
- 9:14And and if we aren't that important, then why is it
- 9:18important that we take this seriously?
- 9:19Well, I feel like it's one reason why he talks so much on
- 9:22the resurrection starting in chapter 40.
- 9:24This is verse one. I perceive that thy mind is
- 9:28worried concerning the resurrection.
- 9:30You know, he wants to describe it and he he said don't worry
- 9:33about the timing. And in fact, Alma was so careful
- 9:36on this, he wrote it into a beautiful chiastic structure
- 9:39starting from verses 3 to 9. You know, I've inquired
- 9:43diligently. I want to know what God wants
- 9:46here. And that's exactly it ends in
- 9:48verse 9 as well. This has not been an easy thing
- 9:51for me to come to. And I just want to say Jack has
- 9:54spent his whole life studying these things.
- 9:57I have spent many, many hours a day studying these things, but
- 10:02I've had seven kids too. So I haven't spent my whole life
- 10:05doing this, but on this when they're in nap time, during nap
- 10:08time, I have spent my life in the Scriptures and they don't
- 10:13come easily, but God will reward us when we inquire diligently.
- 10:18And he's asking here this question and he hasn't
- 10:21beautifully described that. He says it doesn't matter.
- 10:23The bottom line is the timing doesn't matter.
- 10:26It mattereth not to God whether there should be one time or a
- 10:29second time or a third time, because God knoweth.
- 10:32He wants us to trust in God. He wants us to have faith in the
- 10:35plan. And I think here in this section
- 10:37that you're talking about another really important part of
- 10:41what Corryanton must have been worried about is will the
- 10:45resurrection happen when Christ comes, he will be resurrected.
- 10:49Will everyone be resurrected then?
- 10:51And we know that some were there is.
- 10:52Oh yeah, the morning of the first resurrection started with
- 10:55the Savior. But what Alma says in verses 6
- 10:59and nine take special note of. He now understands that there
- 11:04will be a space, verse 6A space betwixt the time of death and
- 11:10the time of the resurrection. I think that's new knowledge for
- 11:13them. Well, and the reason why I think
- 11:15it's new is because his son thinks as soon as you die,
- 11:18you're resurrected. And Alma says, OK, we're using
- 11:20that word a little differently. Yes, you're going to continue
- 11:23living, but resurrection won't occur until after Christ.
- 11:26There is a space of time between everyone's death and everyone's
- 11:30resurrection and those before Christ.
- 11:32Yeah, I think this is very important.
- 11:34And this will also then mean that there is a time before sin
- 11:41and the judgement. Oh, definitely.
- 11:44That's part of the merciful plan.
- 11:46That's from the Garden of Eden. We have here, we know that there
- 11:49will be this this time and in verse 14 that there will be a
- 11:55paradise that the righteous will be in until the time of their
- 11:58resurrection. Just a minute before you go
- 12:01further, in verse 11, we get a glimpse of the pre mortal life
- 12:06and I don't know how many verses in the Book of Mormon talk about
- 12:09the pre mortal life, but this is very happy to me to see it.
- 12:12Here he's talking about the state of the soul between death
- 12:15and the resurrection. He says yeah, the spirits of all
- 12:18men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God
- 12:23who gave them life. So it's just a hint of it.
- 12:25And then it goes on to the paradise as you mentioned in
- 12:28verses 12, he mentions paradise, but there's only two general
- 12:32possibilities. According to Alma's blessing
- 12:34here, you either are going to end up the wicked with the devil
- 12:39or the righteous with the Lord. But there is this space of time,
- 12:43time for repentance, so we can choose which one we're going to
- 12:46be sealed to. And, and by the way, when you go
- 12:50to chapter 13, back to chapter 13 of Alma, he does talk about
- 12:56the plan of redemption, which Alma is now going to elaborate
- 13:01further on. He there talks about the
- 13:03ordination of priests who were ordained to His holy order after
- 13:07a manner where they were called and prepared from the foundation
- 13:10of the world according to God's foreknowledge of what should
- 13:14happen. Oh there's a pre mortal?
- 13:16Yes, very much so. And and in the 1st place he says
- 13:20they were left to choose good or evil.
- 13:22So now this point of choice, all of this is I think prelude to
- 13:28what Alma's talking about now in 40.
- 13:31He's extending it now from the pre mortal to now the
- 13:34resurrection. And the continuity in Alma's 10
- 13:38sermons tends this is not a sermon, but his, the 10
- 13:43speeches, whatever that we have from him, his 10 words, 10
- 13:46messages is so consistent. We see this thread and as you
- 13:50can see his thoughts growing and maturing.
- 13:52It's it's even more clear here. These are some of the his best
- 13:55chapters. He also wants to, as you know,
- 13:58emphasize the importance of the resurrection of the.
- 14:00Body. Well, he defines first
- 14:02resurrection a little differently than we do in the
- 14:04Restoration. You know, we've got the benefit
- 14:05of the Doctrine Covenant, section 456376.
- 14:09They all define that the first resurrection is the resurrection
- 14:12of the just. It's the resurrection from the
- 14:14time of Christ until the end of the Millennium, but they're
- 14:19trying to figure it out here. That's right, he understands
- 14:22again that there will be a first resurrection.
- 14:23That's in verse 15. And 16 and 17.
- 14:26Then after that, there will be another resurrection.
- 14:29So once again, he's seeing this as a process and all of it's not
- 14:34going to happen at once, but it will happen in the right time
- 14:37and in the right place for everyone, and they will be given
- 14:40time in order to to repent. Yeah.
- 14:43And he, he's defining then that the death is different.
- 14:48In verse 18, what he's referring to is the reuniting of the soul
- 14:52and the body from the days of Adam until the resurrection of
- 14:55Christ. So there we finally get it
- 14:57clear. But this space is also talked
- 14:59about in verse 21. There is a space between death
- 15:02and the resurrection. And that then becomes his next
- 15:05theme is on how we are restored in the next verse.
- 15:11Chapter, which begins at the end of verse 23, where he starts
- 15:14using this word restore, but first in a bodily sense, that
- 15:18the body and the soul must be restored to each other, and not
- 15:22one hair of the head shall be lost, but shall be restored to
- 15:26their proper and perfect frame. So that's one kind of
- 15:29restoration that has been spoken of.
- 15:31We're so happy for all of us who have deformities and challenges,
- 15:35and everyone of us, and some more than others.
- 15:38This is such a happy, glorious state that the Lord will give.
- 15:41Us and then also the wicked that in verse 26 that they will be
- 15:52restored to the state of and wickedness if that's their final
- 15:56condition. For they die.
- 15:58As to things pertaining, things of righteousness, that's tragic.
- 16:01So now he's introduced this word restoration.
- 16:04Yeah, it's a little different than Joseph Smith's restoration.
- 16:07Indeed, the word restoration can mean several things.
- 16:11To bring back, to build as it used to be or in other times and
- 16:18places to restore step by step a building.
- 16:24When you rebuild, restore a building, you restore the
- 16:27foundation and then you restore the walls.
- 16:29And then it can be a long, complicated process.
- 16:31And I think that Alma sees this restoration is not just an
- 16:36instant kind of thing. The resurrection may be an
- 16:39instant moment, but it's a part of the plan of restoration,
- 16:43which is a part of a big process.
- 16:50But now in chapter 41, Alma then takes the next step on
- 16:54understanding what this plan is going to involve, and he has to
- 16:59correct Corry Anton, because there are some people who
- 17:04understand the word restoration in a different way.
- 17:08And we have to realize that the people who followed Nahor had a
- 17:12different idea of what it meant to be restored.
- 17:15We learned about Nahor's doctrine in Alba chapter one,
- 17:19and he was teaching that everyone would die.
- 17:23We came down and there was the fall and we would die and we
- 17:27will all because we all started in a state of glory or goodness.
- 17:33Well, I'll be returned to that. Restored means that we'll be put
- 17:36back in that that situation. And this is at least, you know,
- 17:3817 years later, and those thoughts have trickled and
- 17:42percolated around the Nephite nation enough that Corry Anton
- 17:45now has questions about them. And I think this is one reason
- 17:47why his dad is addressing them is because he's confused.
- 17:51Aren't we all going to be saved? Isn't that the whole beautiful
- 17:54plan? Verse 10 of chapter 41, he says,
- 17:57do not suppose because it has been spoken of as concerning a
- 18:01restoration, that ye shall be restored from sin to happiness.
- 18:04And this is where he says wickedness never was happiness,
- 18:08and you will not be restored from this physical or carnal
- 18:12state to a spiritual state. Why should you not suppose that?
- 18:15The reason is that's what Nahor had been teaching, and so Alma
- 18:20here offers a more accurate and more useful definition of what
- 18:27it means to be restored. And this is where we have
- 18:30another very interesting chiasm in order to correct this
- 18:34problem, which Alma has articulated very clearly in
- 18:37verses 11:50 on the meaning of the word restoration.
- 18:41It's not to take something and put it back into an unnatural
- 18:46state or place it in a state that is opposite to its nature.
- 18:50Having said that, Alma then begins, Oh my son, this is not
- 18:55the case. The meaning of the word
- 18:57restoration is to bring back evil for evil, carnal for
- 19:00carnal, devilish for devilish. Now that's on the bad side.
- 19:03But then he turns to the good side.
- 19:05And here's where the chiasm really concludes in its most
- 19:10articulate form. And he says good for good,
- 19:12righteous for righteous, just for just merciful for merciful.
- 19:16And then he takes those four things.
- 19:17And then he says starting in the opposite order, just as you will
- 19:21get merciful if you are merciful, then he says be
- 19:25merciful. And then he says, deal justly
- 19:28and judge righteously and do good continually.
- 19:31And if you do those four things, then you will get the reward.
- 19:34You will then get mercy, you will get justice, you will have
- 19:38a righteous judge, and you will get good rewarded.
- 19:40You go in through, in effect, a list of four pairs, and then you
- 19:43go through two lists of those four things in the opposite
- 19:47order. You have the doubling first and
- 19:49then a single order. Single order.
- 19:50Yes, and this was one of the Chiasms that I found more or
- 19:55less when I was on my mission. I remember reading on a German
- 19:59train on my way back from Munich in Alma as I kept reading on I.
- 20:07I saw these words and I was reading it in German and I
- 20:14thought, wow, this is pretty close to a Caius, but it's not
- 20:18exactly. Well, it wasn't until I got home
- 20:23and I read it in English that I said, well, what was I thinking?
- 20:27It's exactly right here. But in fact, the German had used
- 20:30different synonyms for some of these words, so it didn't look
- 20:34like it was exact as it really is.
- 20:36Oh, fabulous. So look it up on our archives or
- 20:40on BYU studies to see it in more detail.
- 20:48Let's move on now to the next chapter, 42.
- 20:51This is one of my favorite chapters on the discussion of
- 20:56justice and mercy. This is one of the most profound
- 21:00and articulate and well reasoned as well as inspired sections, I
- 21:06think, in all of the scriptures. I remember a time when Noel
- 21:11Reynolds put together a conference sponsored by an
- 21:14organization called the Liberty Fund in Indianapolis.
- 21:19They give grants to small groups of scholars who wish to come
- 21:24together and spend a week in a retreat talking about a
- 21:28particular topic, usually related in some way to liberty.
- 21:33And Noel proposed that they might get a group together of
- 21:39whoever wants to come to talk about justice in the Book of
- 21:44Mormon. And we did.
- 21:47We had a group, there weren't very many of us as Latter Day
- 21:50Saints, but scholars who were interested in reading what does
- 21:54the Book of Mormon have to say about liberty and justice and so
- 21:57on. We spent the whole week reading
- 22:01different passages about justice and mercy.
- 22:05We read some passages from Lehigh and Nephi, King Benjamin.
- 22:11And then every afternoon at the end of that day's discussion, we
- 22:17would introduce briefly the next day's topic.
- 22:22And so on Thursday, the last night we would be together, we
- 22:28introduced and Noel explained that we will now read Alma
- 22:31Chapter 42 on justice and mercy and gave a little bit of
- 22:38explanation so they could kind of figure out where they were.
- 22:42And then they went off and did their homework.
- 22:46And I remember one of them coming into the meeting to the
- 22:49conference room the next morning and just being blown away and
- 22:54said this was the most incredible text.
- 22:58Why did you save this one for last?
- 23:01I said, well, we get the best for last.
- 23:03No, we should have done this one first.
- 23:06But I said, well, you can't understand it until you go
- 23:08through all the steps that lead up to the understanding of all
- 23:12these different plans, the plan of redemption, the plan of
- 23:14salvation. And now Alma's talking about the
- 23:18way in which justice and mercy work together.
- 23:22He said, no, but this was just so good.
- 23:25I wanted to spend the whole week looking at this from all these
- 23:29different perspectives, and I said, well, let's have another
- 23:32session on that. But anyway.
- 23:34But that was one reaction from someone who just was amazed at
- 23:38the quality of this of this work.
- 23:40Yeah, well, I'm fascinated that he starts this discussion on
- 23:43Justin and Mercy by going back to our first parents.
- 23:46We refer again to the Garden of Eden and he wants to talk about
- 23:50the lessons learned in Eden. It's not just that his son has a
- 23:55question about the resurrection. His son needs to understand the
- 24:02way back to the tree of life is when Christ says I am the way, I
- 24:07think he's referring back to this phrase that's found in
- 24:09Genesis chapter 3, that the tree of life is guarded.
- 24:14But the way to the tree of life is Jesus Christ.
- 24:17He is the way. The Garden of Eden story is
- 24:21interesting because we don't have a creation account in the
- 24:23Book of Mormon. And yet, as we look for the
- 24:26words that refer to our first parents, we find an enormous
- 24:30amount in the Book of Mormon. And if you remember back at the
- 24:34beginning of chapter 40 when Alma was talking about the
- 24:38timing of the resurrection and we said there must needs be a
- 24:42space betwixt the time of death and the time of resurrection.
- 24:46Alma will now bring that concept back into play in a concrete
- 24:50situation where what would have happened if Adam and Eve had
- 24:55been judged immediately? They've broken the law.
- 24:58God could have judged them. He is just.
- 25:02Why doesn't he judge them? In verse four he says, and thus
- 25:06we see that there was a time granted unto man to repent.
- 25:10Now that word granted, that means it was given a
- 25:15probationary time, a time to repent and serve God.
- 25:20In other words, as I was saying, a just God, if God was only
- 25:24just, he could have judged Adam and Eve immediately and said,
- 25:28you know, I'll get somebody else to do this and they'll do it,
- 25:30right. So Adam and Eve, we're done with
- 25:33you. Let's start with someone else.
- 25:36But that is the essence. The essence of mercy is giving
- 25:41time so that they can repent. Now, think about that in a
- 25:46judicial kind of context. You know, you can have a stay of
- 25:51judgment, you can have a probationary result where you're
- 25:55given time, even though the facts are so clear, the evidence
- 26:00is so strong, the judge could rule, but the judge says I will
- 26:06give time so that maybe something else can come forth.
- 26:12Now, we don't often do this, but God can.
- 26:16And that space of time is what I think is the essence of mercy.
- 26:23He will wait. He will let us try again.
- 26:27And we we sometimes think of mercy as being, well, He'll just
- 26:33forget it or he'll forgive us. He is a forgiving, loving person
- 26:38and he'll love us. But how does he love us?
- 26:41He loves us by giving us more time.
- 26:44Time to repent and serve God is what he says.
- 26:48So it's not just time to continue sinning.
- 26:50You know, we've got to use our time to serve God and to repent.
- 26:54So the plan of mercy is the plan of repentance.
- 26:58And I feel like this is the same message that comes again.
- 27:01This is why he's talking about the first parents.
- 27:03And let me reinforce this in verse 5.
- 27:05Great, please. Where he then says, all right,
- 27:07if Adam had put forth his hand immediately and had partaken of
- 27:10the fruit of the tree of life, he would have lived forever
- 27:13according to the word of God, having no space for repentance.
- 27:18This is why they could not partake of that fruit.
- 27:20And outside of the Book of Mormon, this is confused.
- 27:24I've studied enough with other faith traditions that the fall
- 27:28is not understood as we do in the Restoration because of
- 27:32Alma's description right here that the great plan of salvation
- 27:38would have been frustrated and in verse six he said they would
- 27:41have been lost forever and become a fallen man.
- 27:44This idea of the fall is something that is possibly
- 27:48mentioned in other places but clearly defined in the Book of
- 27:53Mormon. And as you look at the
- 27:55scriptures in the Book of Mormon is when we understand better not
- 27:59just the pre mortal life but the fall itself and the need for the
- 28:03plan of mercy with time to repent.
- 28:07Why is it a problem though? If if God is just just, why
- 28:13couldn't he have done what he says?
- 28:17And Alma then goes on in verse 8 to say, well, it's not expedient
- 28:23for man to have been reclaimed from the temporal death
- 28:26immediately because that would destroy the great plan of
- 28:29happiness. And it's not expedient, he says,
- 28:32to act too quickly on the side of justice, verse 12, because if
- 28:38there were no means to reclaim man and no chance for
- 28:43repentance, then verse 13, according to justice, the plan
- 28:47of redemption could not be brought about.
- 28:50So we have to have both justice and mercy.
- 28:53And the one does not rob the other or overwhelm the other,
- 28:57but the two can be accomplished because of the factor of
- 29:03temporal time, the sequence that allows the plan of justice to be
- 29:08accomplished. And I also feel like the plan of
- 29:10justice only works because God loves us.
- 29:13God is a God of mercy and a God of justice, and both work
- 29:17because he loves us. But mercy is for those who will
- 29:21repent, and justice is those who will not.
- 29:24But it's been interesting, Jack, we just read a few verses and
- 29:27read the plan of different plans.
- 29:30So I just did a little research on this and was fascinated to
- 29:33see across the whole text of the Book of Mormon how many
- 29:36different times this idea is mentioned.
- 29:40And Alma has the majority of them.
- 29:42But starting back in Second Nephi, we have the great and
- 29:45eternal plan of deliverance. Then Jacob starts mentioning it.
- 29:50Jacob mentions it both in Second Nephi and in his own book.
- 29:54He calls it the plan of redemption.
- 29:56He's the first one to call it that.
- 29:57He also calls it the merciful plan of the Great Creator, which
- 30:01I love according to your definition here.
- 30:04And Jacob also calls it the plan of our God.
- 30:07But then we get into the book of Alma, and Alma the Younger
- 30:11repeats it 12 times as the plan of redemption, and then once as
- 30:15the plan of salvation. And then we're getting here in
- 30:19chapter 41, the plan of restoration, in chapter 42,
- 30:23three times the great plan of happiness, and then in chapter
- 30:2942, verses 15 and 31, the plan of mercy or the great plan of
- 30:34mercy. And there may be a slight
- 30:36distinction here. I think if you look at what's
- 30:39happening here, the plan of redemption is when you are
- 30:44redeemed, when you are bought back.
- 30:47But salvific force being saved is being healed, and so the plan
- 30:55of salvation is also it's not just enough to be bought back,
- 31:00it's now to be made whole. Which is the whole point of the
- 31:03restoration that he's talking about and the resurrection.
- 31:06But I do think it's interesting he says now the plan of
- 31:08happiness because we've gone through that being bought back
- 31:12and the restoration. I see the plan of happiness as
- 31:14the fulfillment of those two. What do you think that means?
- 31:17How he's using the plan of happiness here in chapter 42
- 31:19verse 8 and 16? It seems to me that the the plan
- 31:23of happiness is something that Alma has brought into the
- 31:29discussion here. It doesn't appear before in the
- 31:31Book of Mormon. It's only in chapter 42, in the
- 31:33whole Book of Mormon, all of scripture.
- 31:35These are the only scriptures. What we what he's talking about
- 31:37there is the plan of happiness in verse eight is we must return
- 31:43to God in order to be truly happy.
- 31:45I agree we have to have the. Plan for blessedness and
- 31:48happiness will be. Found Amen.
- 31:50And the plan of happiness overcomes, he says, eternal
- 31:54punishment. So the plan of happiness makes
- 31:58it so that we won't ever be subject to any of these problems
- 32:02again. Now, the plan of mercy, of
- 32:06course, and the plan of justice bring us to those places.
- 32:11The plan of restoration is one of them that he talks about and
- 32:15he says it is required for the plan of justice.
- 32:18In other words, things must be restored as he's now defined the
- 32:21word restoration, good for good, evil for evil, and righteous for
- 32:24righteous. That's chapter 41, verse 2.
- 32:28So if we now just look at what Alma is focusing on in speaking
- 32:31to his son Corian. Just these 4 chapters.
- 32:34Just in these four chapters, we do have 10 times that Alma will
- 32:38talk about the plan of something being a high priest.
- 32:43This is an important number of perfection.
- 32:46And as you would recite or mention the name of Jehovah, as
- 32:52we've said before 10 times, Alma is now elevating the plan, I
- 32:57think, to that status of holiness, that this is God's
- 33:01divine plan. And it only can take him to pass
- 33:04through Jehovah through his promised Messiah.
- 33:07So I think that's a beautiful way to equate it to the 10 with
- 33:11the high priest. And like you say, these things
- 33:16could not occur without the atonement of Jesus Christ.
- 33:22And if he, of course, has explained that in even greater
- 33:27detail back in Alma chapters 12 and 13.
- 33:30But he knows that we and Corry Anton are well aware of that.
- 33:35Alma brings together all of the aspects of this plan of mercy
- 33:39and justice and redemption and so on by stressing in verse 13,
- 33:44if this were not so, the work of justice would be destroyed and
- 33:48that would mean that God would cease to be God.
- 33:52Now, I think that that's a very powerful logical implication
- 33:58that God has promised that this will be the plan, and if he
- 34:03doesn't see that the plan is able to operate, His word will
- 34:08not be fulfilled. And Jack, the plan of justice
- 34:12only works because we have agency.
- 34:14So God can be God only when he allows us to be a free agents of
- 34:19our own decisions, and then He will be just to us.
- 34:23That's of course, a big part of it.
- 34:25It goes on to say that not only must He allow us to have our
- 34:30agency, but again, He must give us a time to repent and then
- 34:37Mercy can claim us. And he says in verse 23, if this
- 34:43were not the case, God would cease to be God.
- 34:46And Mercy, however, does claim the penitent, and Mercy cometh
- 34:50because of the atonement, and the atonement bring us to pass
- 34:54the resurrection of the dead. And the resurrection of the dead
- 34:57brings men back into the presence of God, and thus they
- 35:00are restored to His presence. All of those steps.
- 35:03Come together in the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
- 35:05That we be judged according to our works, according to the law
- 35:09and justice. I appreciate he defines
- 35:12atonement also that God himself atoneth for the sins of the
- 35:17world. I just cannot say enough about
- 35:20how important daily repentance is as our prophet has asked us,
- 35:24and using all of our heart and might and strength to come unto
- 35:28the Lord. This is a powerful chapter on
- 35:33how to remain a disciple of Christ and to receive the
- 35:40Savior's mercy. And so Alma ends all of this
- 35:44wonderful explanation in verse 27 with an admonition.
- 35:48O my son, whosoever will come may come and partake of the
- 35:52waters of life freely. That's a part of this plan of
- 35:55mercy and love that God provides, that whoever will come
- 35:59the same is not compelled to come, but in the last day it
- 36:03shall be restored unto him according to his deeds.
- 36:06And this is according to the restoration of God.
- 36:09So only let your sins trouble you to the extent that it will
- 36:12help you to be provoked to repentance.
- 36:15That's just beautiful. The imagery of waters of life is
- 36:19a great imagery for repentance. It's the cleansing.
- 36:22It's the power of the Spirit to come in and cleanse our souls,
- 36:26to take the atonement of Jesus Christ and to apply it to
- 36:29ourselves. Baptism is a beautiful imagery.
- 36:32Our sacrament is a beautiful imagery.
- 36:33But the waters of life also go back to John chapter four, woman
- 36:38at the well. You know that we Christ will
- 36:41give us this living water and it will not only cleanse us, but
- 36:44nourish us and allow us to have this beautiful gift of mercy.
- 36:49And with this conclusion, I think we can understand why that
- 36:53one scholar was so impressed with what happens here.
- 36:57Two things to mention. One is that remember that Alma
- 37:00began this whole discussion. He could have just jumped in
- 37:03with the plan of redemption, the plan of forgiveness, the plan of
- 37:06happiness. He starts with repentance, and
- 37:09then he starts with resurrection and the afterlife.
- 37:13And that without an understanding of the afterlife,
- 37:16you can't understand the full perspective and the
- 37:21accomplishment of the great eternal plan of our heavenly
- 37:25Father. And what then happens in chapter
- 37:2740 when he talks about the resurrection, taking that into
- 37:30the eternal sphere? Most philosophers and students
- 37:35of justice would know that when Plato tries to explain to people
- 37:40what is justice, he writes 10 books in the Republic and they
- 37:46all deal with the question, can you find justice here?
- 37:49Can you find it in your neighborhood?
- 37:50Can you find it in art? Can you find it in yourself?
- 37:54Can you look around? You can't find it in this world.
- 37:56Can you find it in a cave of darkness?
- 37:58No. In book 10, Plato ends the
- 38:00Republic and his search for justice in the next life.
- 38:05And it is only, he says, in the unseen world that we will
- 38:09finally be able to understand real justice.
- 38:13And what Alma does, he says you can only understand the plan of
- 38:17God and the plan of salvation when you understand the
- 38:21resurrection and what will happen in the next life.
- 38:25And that's where justice and mercy will really meet and how
- 38:29you can really make sense of all of this.
- 38:31Alma then goes and gives a charge to his son.
- 38:33He says don't excuse yourself in the least point because of your
- 38:38sins because you're denying the justice of God and his mercy.
- 38:41You know, we've got to repent in order to receive his mercy.
- 38:45And that and that little point, that one conclusion here, do you
- 38:49let the justice of God and his mercy and long-suffering have
- 38:54full sway in your heart and let it bring you down into the dust
- 38:58of humility or humanity or humanness?
- 39:01Now what he's saying there in that little conclusion, you have
- 39:06to get justice and mercy together.
- 39:09Most people think they are opposites, but here we
- 39:12understand that they are not. But justice is like the letter
- 39:16of the law. Mercy doesn't rob justice.
- 39:20But as we've said in conclusion, and what I think he would have
- 39:23recognized as he had read through this, it is a plan that
- 39:28has many facets to it. And when they are all put
- 39:31together, this great plan is able to combine apparent
- 39:38opposites. And remember that Lehigh had
- 39:40said their needs must be an opposition in all.
- 39:45Things Second Nephi chapter 2. And he's there talking about
- 39:48Adam and Eve. He sees the principle that Alma
- 39:52now articulates in great abundance and fullness.
- 39:58He tells us and shows us the way we now can proceed and
- 40:02understand and not only receive mercy in our own lives by
- 40:06repenting. But how we can grant that to
- 40:09other people? And that's why he gives them the
- 40:11charge now to go be a missionary again.
- 40:13And that's where it ends. Verse 31 O my son, ye are called
- 40:17of God to preach the word unto this people.
- 40:19And now, my son, go thy way, but declare the word with truth and
- 40:23soberness, that thou mayest bring souls unto repentance.
- 40:27This is the last time the idea of the plan is mentioned in all
- 40:30Scripture. The great plan of mercy may have
- 40:33claim upon them, and May God grant unto you even according to
- 40:36my words. So we testify that Alma, an
- 40:42inspired and true prophet, who learned the hard way, who
- 40:48learned the revealed way, who learned the intellectual way,
- 40:54who learned the social way, the fatherly way, he brings us
- 40:59throughout these words. And this is the last time we
- 41:01will really hear Alma speaking to us.
- 41:04What a great way to end with his testimony and his prayer, which
- 41:09we add and testify that the great plan of mercy will indeed
- 41:16bring us happiness and eternal life in the presence of God.
- 41:22And we will understand this, maybe not so much in this life,
- 41:26but certain in the world to come in the name of Jesus Christ,
- 41:31Amen. Amen.
