Latest / Guy Football Focus with Guy Haberman / DeForest Buckner Trade Reaction + The Next Move The 49ers Should Make and More
Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: 49ers just made the easiest trade they've ever made to force Buckner.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think sometimes big names people get a little bit, you know, you get a little out of sorts with how much a guy is going to cost.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: We've talked about this.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: I said I didn't think he'd cost a 30 cost a fourth.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers do this just a few hours after the Seahawks acquire Quentin Nelson, the guard.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: Some people I guess want to quit Nelson.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe some of you want to quit Nelson.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think they, I quit Nelson was never on my radar as a guy.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: They're happy with their offensive line.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: Hell, I'm happy with their offensive line.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: What I watch the 49ers even though there are issues you go back to the Seattle game with With Connor Colby and past protection.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's not their problem protecting Brock Perti is not their problem Creating enough offense without the receivers they got is their problem
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: hitting the quarterback was not their problem against Washington or Seattle, but it was their problem last week.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: I throw the Atlantis out because they don't really give you the chance to hit the quarterback.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: They don't, that's a different situation, but the Niners need interior and they need defensive line exterior or interior fortifications.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: This is the easiest trade they've made.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't cost much to force Buckner's 32, would they sign them to extension?
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's not why I wouldn't expect it.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: maybe i'm not saying no but that's not why you do this deal you do this deal because you need help from the sky right now and you can plug and play him um you know exactly who he is you know exactly how he fits you know that uh he still wants to compete he's 32 years old you look at some of the pff ranks which you know
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: You take them all.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: You take them with a grain of salt, but I think some of these are grades.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: Some of these are just stats.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'll share with you some of the stuff on Defore's Buckner.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then I'll tell you what else I think I'd like to see the 49ers do.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they've got a week off, so you're not in a rush this week.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: But his overall grade among interior defensive lineman 44th, his past rush grade is 14th.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: his run defense or defense.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: Great is 95th.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: But he's first among interior defensive linemen in sacks with six.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: He is ninth among interior defensive linemen in solo tackles.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's sixth in assists.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: He's 16th in stops.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: He is 22nd in hurries.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: He is 24th in hits.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: He is 14th in pressures.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: He is 5th in battered passes.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's got 3.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe most importantly, because any, as you know, any scouting report right now on a 49er's player at the top of the list is,
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: He is fourth in the NFL among interior defensive linemen in total snaps.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: He's seventh in snaps for run plays.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: He's fifth in pass rush snaps.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: He is on the field, which is a critical, if ever a team has needed availability to be an ability, that's the 49ers.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a it's a you know, it's a home run.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a put you over the top?
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: No, but it's a critical addition You know, I I've thought we'd see we saw some a little bit of flash here there From also Digi Zua.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe this helps him a little bit.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think right now Nothing's a four gone conclusion after the buy for the radar game But getting Nick Bosa back by then you'd really feel like the 49ers have done a major injection
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: if they've got the forest buckner and Nick Bosa in that game they'll have the forest buckner in that game.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the raiders lost again, but I think it's safe to say Max Crosby's not getting traded to the 49ers before November 10th or probably anybody for that matter.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: You would think not it might be good business for them, but it's amazing to think that the
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: for sauce gardener.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: And frankly, they should trade sauce gardener for 50 cents on their dollar if they could get a one back form.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: They should do it.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: But they just traded two ones for sauce gardener.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: And now they're they're in the midst of a fire sale and a complete reset.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, they fire their GM.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: We know the Niners and the Colts like the same types of players.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: This is not the first time.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when DeForce went there, we talked about it.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: Chris Ballard.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember who was the player.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: One of you might, oh, maybe
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: find you you know that the every every team has their own kind of that if you manage to a gold star like a red thing Next to players that are like okay Gs are kind of guys are type of guys
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: And there was a story a few years ago with the Niners and the Colts having the same guy flagged.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: Got it might have been on you got one of you remember and put it put it in the chat, but you know, I think it's always so easy.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: And by the way, Quentin Nelson, the C-Ox got him for a 2027 third and a 2028 fifth.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: which is somebody from another front office told me that that was good value.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's two years younger than DeForce Buckner.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's, if I debate, it's far more likely that he gets resigned in Seattle than Buckner gets resigned, but you know, I think he would also cost more quit Nelson, both of these guys on expiring contracts, quit Nelson, I think would cost a lot more than DeForce Buckner, but you know, sometimes it's a little inflated with the defensive
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: Two of the best guards in the league, I think the Niners are trading for DeForce Buckner, whether Quentin Nelson goes to the Seahawks or not, this increases the need for DeForce Buckner, at least the value for DeForce Buckner.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: Interesting, you wonder how many times these guys over the years have gone up against each other, in practice a million times, you wonder how many times they've
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: Gray's able is going to move over to right guard and yeah and and they they right through the best guards in the league and and this is where like the Niners have a lead in the division you don't get to just squat on it this is part of why I think I was so disappointed with the way they played the fact that they lost in Atlanta because I just thought you know if you you give Seattle or
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just they're going to be on your heels and a heartbeat and Seattle beats the chiefs, dismantles the chiefs.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: And their run game, you know, Zack Sharp and I may be back this week or the next, their run game is going to get better the next time you see him.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: So it's it's so valuable that you beat him the time you beat him.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: but you know you don't you don't get the rest on that.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: So you got to get better and the 49ers got better.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's more to do.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: I hate to be the guy being in the drum for an obvious one.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: But experiencing my evidence, you guys know I can't stop talking about my evidence, experiencing a true number one receiver.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers have not had a true number one
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: I would, I think Garrett Wilson's out there to be got as one as a different front office person who knows kind of salary caps told me.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: I said, what do you think of Garrett Wilson's contract, because I'd heard from an AFC guy that Garrett, well, he thinks Garrett Wilson is definitely available in trades and the thing I got from the other guy.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: was that he thinks Garrett Wilson's appropriately paid.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: Garrett Wilson's expensive but he's good.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: Garrett Wilson's $23 million cap hit next year.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: He is $35 million cap hit in 2028 when he's 28.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's $36 million cap hit in 2029 when he's 29 and he's $38 million cap hit in 2030 when he's 30.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: Again, but by the way, his dead cap in 2030's 4 million is dead cap in 29 is 10.7.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: So he's expensive.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's a true, true, like we talk about like T.O.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans, you know, Justin Jefferson.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's that.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: I always said historically I thought Brandon Iyuk was not like a true one, but he was like a one B. I think this guy's a one A. I think he's better than Iyuk.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's definitely better than I euk, but he's not Justin Jefferson, but hell, I think he's close enough.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason is not, you might say, guy, look at you, and Mike Evans will be back soon and dribbling will be back soon and the Marcus Robinson will be back soon.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, the Marcus Robinson's been exactly what they need, especially this year when he was the brief time that he was healthy.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: but uh... he is the guy that you want to be like your fourth receiver maybe your third you don't want to be sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for democracy Robinson to come back and save your offense and to me it's about big picture
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just this year.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: You got a quarterback in his prime right now your best receiver in 2020.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, Mike Evans is under contract next year.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see how many games he plays.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see if he's back against the Raiders.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: How many games is Mike Evans going to play?
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think the beauty of Garrett Wilson, he helps you now and he helps you later.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: Ricky Pierce all hurt again.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like in theory, Evans and Stirling and Pierce all got one.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: This groups together
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, I'm done holding my breath.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: If you get Garrett Wilson, you know, it's gonna be expensive, at least a one, and other stuff, but I think you gotta do it.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: What how many chances do you get to get a type of game-changing receiver?
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: And you just see my Kevin's, I go back to my headline for 2026 watching this team watching my Kevin specifically,
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: EPA's nice, efficiency's nice, all that stuff is great, you know, like getting through 162 games is a baseball team with tandem starters is great.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: But what if you just have the best picture in the game in game seven?
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: I know, you know, I'm not locked in on baseball like I used to be, so somebody might be like, oh, forget that bro, you want to pitch four guys in game seven.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: The hitters won't be able to see them.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: whatever.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that's a bad analogy, but give me the guy who go mono a mono and just make a play whether he's open or not.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's my Kevin's, right?
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: And will that be the John's dribbling?
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: He hasn't caught a ball in his careers, played half a game.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: Is Mike Evans going to be back next year?
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: If he's healthy, hell yeah, I will run.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's under contract.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: And a good value if he's healthy.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: But it's if he's healthy.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: And Evans, what a, what a tough dude.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, but he's been on the injury report every week.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: And basically, and it's caught up with him on this Achilles tendonitis.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: So you don't know, is he going to be back long-term?
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: and in the worst case scenario, oh no, I got my ovens in, there's no one's dribbling in here, Wilson, please, God!
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Save me from myself!
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think these guys need that, um, you know, I think Brock, whatever, the Atlantic game, uh, we're not going to sit here and and re-litigate the Atlantic game, uh, nobody was great, but it was mistakes.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: It was mistakes that cost them.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: You just knew, I just knew.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: You throw two picks in that game, you're not winning.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: You throw no picks in that game, you are winning.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: like that's that's it that's the whole thing and um... you know not having my heavens and having receivers that you're not totally on the same page with whatever is here that's the thing now gear Wilson do you step right in and just start producing i don't know
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like a low-hanging fruit one, but I'm on board with this with this particular low-hanging fruit.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, DeForce Buckner was low-hanging fruit.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: He was just cheap.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I know, Calumax got to get traded soon.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: He's way too expensive for the, for the, he's a 500.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: Every game he doesn't play for the chargers, they save half a million dollars.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: But again, just like DeForce.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's not, you know, to me that doesn't cost you a third.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: DeForce went for a fourth.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: I have fields about right for Calil Mac, you know, that that feels about right for clue.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: These have been some value trades, I mean, for the Seahawks to get quit now, so I understand I understand any team that could use an upgrade of guard going, I don't want to do that to you.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: I get it, I don't think it would have been the best use of the 49er's capital just because I don't think it's what they need.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think what they need, I think they need a game-changing receiver.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: Now they have one of my cabins and if he was healthy, I wouldn't be saying this.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not just about today, it's about the future.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: How do you get another one?
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: How do you get the next one?
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: And if they chance dribbling turns out to be that, great, gravy.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I really do.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like it's low hanging fruit, but I feel strongly about it.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Because I just think it's those guys are so hard to get.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: They are just so damn hard to get.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, this show brought to you by Volvo Cars Morin.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: Thank goodness for Matt Gordon and his team at Volvo Cars Morin, because we are driving around in the XC90.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: T8, that is a plug-in hybrid.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: I've had this car shins.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: August, early August?
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: I've put gas in the car one time.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: Thank God.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but not only that.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's beautiful.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's so comfortable.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: It halls stuff that you hall when you have a baby.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: Um, when I got to go to the dump because I got too much stuff to make room for the baby stuff, halls it.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's gorgeous inside, it's so comfortable, the sound system's great.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: I just, it's got, it's just fantastic.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: My wife loves it, I love it.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy for the baby, family comes over, throw them in the car, we love it.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: It dreaded, the way it drives, it's great.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: And yet it's got a little bit of size for the family.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're looking for a new or used Volvo,
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to go to Volvo, cars, Marin, Matt Gordon and his team.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: They'll take great care of you.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: I do want to talk about a couple other things.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, Kyle Shanna had now own 49 when trailing by 8 or more in the fourth quarter.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: This is the kind of stat where I think a blue chip receiver helps you.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: Garrett Wilson, Mike Evans, Julio Jones in the day, Josh Dubal, the Associated Press looked up and said that as an offensive coordinator, Kyle is 6 and 45.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: when trailing by eight or more in the fourth quarter, the league average since 2008 is 7% for Dan or Alaska.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: That means 7 times out of a hundred.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: You come back and win the game.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: Shanna Hand was 13% as an offensive coordinator.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: So he was double the league average as an O.C.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: Now he's O for 49 as a head coach.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: I had a theory that it was because the falcons had a quick strike offense.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: But I went and looked.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: I ran the numbers on every Atlanta eight point deficit when he was the O.C.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: It happened eight times.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: They came back tied or led the game three times.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: They won one in 49 times in San Francisco.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's actually come back tied or led the game three times and he's lost.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: I've watched everyone of these games.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'd love to tell you, I do think in my heart of hearts, it doesn't make sense.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's worse than any other than, you know, the average, which is 7% I don't think he's worse than the average.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: And yet, when a number is that jarring, it feels like you're bearing your head in the sand.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: If you ignore it,
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: if he'd won the the three games that he'd come back and tied or took the lead to happen three times he'd be at six percent so it actually would be three and forty six instead of three and forty it's an o in forty nine um so i don't know if i'm the last one on the boat i don't think it's an indication of some deep flawed Kyle Shanahan i think his teams are hurt when they're trying to come from behind by the fact that they don't hit deep balls over the top go balls
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the throw that Brock made, there's been a lot of discourse about the throw that Brock pretty made during Wackins that Wackins had to slow down for, and maybe could have been a touch yet if Wackins didn't have to slow down for it.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think Brock's strength is throwing the go ball, the over the top deep ball.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: Now he hasn't had a lot of experience doing it in the NFL because the Niners don't have receivers, they have not had receivers that win one on one with just straight line speed.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: In this case, Watkins had, I do think watching Brock and Practice, one thing that stood out to me, watching, I was standing behind him, watching him throw the ball far the other day, and his ball tails to his arm side when he throws a deep.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't watched every throw from that angle.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if it's an always thing, I don't know if it's just in practice, he's not throwing it the same way he might throw it in the game, watching the way the ball traveled in that throw to Jordan Watkins, brought through it from the hash, the right hash, and it ended up inside the hash and the numbers.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: which I think from talking to people is probably the spot he's supposed to throw it to.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: In that case you'd love to see an adjustment to like, no this guy says guy beat forget the spot.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm leading Jordan Watkins and letting him run underneath it and scoring a touchdown.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: Again, not a lot of experience doing in the NFL to think about how many times you've seen that.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: Not many did it in the touchdown he threw in the end zone, obviously in the end zone.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: The touchdown he threw through the Marcus Robbs in the Rams game, not a lot.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, the Marcus had to slow down a little bit to stay in bounds on that.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was a great play by both.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: does tail a little bit to his arm side much like you right handed golfers speaking of no one in particular the ball might someone call it a slice someone call it a slice some of you play a little left to write is another way to say it but Brock's ball plays a little left to write out of his hand and something something to watch for because I think that's you know that's what that that's what I saw in practice on
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: I guess Thursday or Friday, and then that's, that's what happened in the game.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I don't know what to make of it with Kyle to me.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's bound to happen or he's going to win one of them.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's bound to happen, you know, through a pick.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: Then I was, that's the one thing that I was going to throw in his teams of throwing I've turned the ball over, but in the, I just want to make this, no, it's a fact.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's not an opinion.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not giving him an excuse, but in the O for 49,
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: More than half of those games have been with quarterbacks other than Groplo and Perti, 21 of the 49 games have been Groplo and Perti.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: The other 28, 10 of them were CJ Bethered, 9 of Nick Mullins, 3 each are Hoyer, Lance, and Mac Jones, 1 each, Darnold, Josh Allen, and Lou Dob Josh Jobs.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, do with that, which you will.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: But it's just down a lot in the fourth quarter with CJ Bethered.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: Down a lot in the fourth quarter with Nick Mullins, that's 19 of the 49 games right there.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: down eight three times each so six times down eight with hoyer and tray lands like yeah you think like I saw one of these you got to win I get it but you know are there I learned something about the NFL efficient everybody is killing the NFL officiating and so I think something used to be said about the NFL officiating this is what you get everybody you pound at the table
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: or the better's deserve for the better for the gambling.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: If your league is gonna be legitimate, then you gotta get every call right.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: You gotta be perfect.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: Because of the gamblers, I'll tell you something.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: If you're new here, maybe you haven't heard me say it.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you've been around for a long time, you've heard me say this.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: This is sacralidious to some.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: But the most important thing is that you entertain your fans.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: The most important thing for the NFL is that at the end of the year, a Super Bowl gets played between two teams and somebody wins it.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: Ideally, I guess for them, it would be like the jets and the giants play for the championship.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: It hasn't happened in a while, and it's not happening anytime soon.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: That would be a ratings bananza.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_00]: Ideally for them, right?
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's not from a ratings standpoint, whoever.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: but it's so anyway the number of priorities entertaining your fans but the problem is that because everybody has a hawk eye on everything and anything wrong could be are you fixing the game what about the integrity of the game now you spending all your time trying to be perfect and anybody who's ever tried to be perfect and anything knows the best way not to be perfect is to try to be perfect
- 21:17[SPEAKER_00]: And now we're going to just end every single play.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_00]: We can't miss anything, the gamblers.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, this is what you get over management.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_00]: This is what you get, the classic overbearing parent.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: And this is what people told me they wanted.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you one thing that's been bizarre watching it the last couple of weeks, not the last couple of weeks.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_00]: for whatever reason.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: They are not good at spotting the football.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_00]: Now, again, if you're new here, I'm a referee defender.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, here, for those of you watching on YouTube, I didn't plan this.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: Look what I have here behind me.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: This is the NCAA Football Rules Redding Study Guide, okay?
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I go to the officials, I went to the college seminar a couple of years ago.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I spent five days there.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_00]: I get, I, I, I subscribe to referee magazine.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so I'm, I'm pro-ref.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: There's, they're awful.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's spot in the football.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: Somehow, I don't know.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: They got replaced.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's now.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: Here's a piece of insight for you.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_00]: In like non-critical situations, so basically, like outside of the last two minutes,
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: and non-playable, like in the regular season, they kind of round up on a first down play.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: So like if you get 10 and watch for this, if a team picks up like 10 and a half yards on first down, they'll probably give them 11 yards.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: Or if it's like closed 10, they might put it on the 10, instead of the 11 yards.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: But if it's 10 and a half, you're gonna get 11 on first down because they want you to start if they can, they want first down to be on a yard line
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy to tell where the line to gain is, right?
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: The first down line.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: If you start on the 11 and a half, and then you got to get to the 21 and a half, it's kind of funky.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's a little hard to tell.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: So they want you to start on the 12.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: And now they know you got to get to the 22.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: So they do that.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's not what I'm talking about.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: The nighters got the ball.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: I thought poorly spotted in Seattle twice against them.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_00]: They had a run that I clearly was a first down through my binoculars, Christian McCaffrey, the other day.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: They marked him shy, watching the replay of it.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: It was a first down.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the flip side of it,
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: There was a run, uh, was it the opening drive where K-Long Black got down to the one yard line, stepped out of bounds, reaching for the pile on, they gave him, and it should have been, at the two, it should have been like the 1.75, they gave him the 0.75.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: That was a bad spot.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how, they supposed to have a Hawkeye, so I don't know, I'm noticing it.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_00]: everyone's talking about the volume of penalties, the flags, we're all noticing it, we all see it, but I just go back to like, this is the thing that everybody, not everybody, I know I'm generalizing here, but the gambling community, like, you gotta get it right, what about my money?
- 24:32[SPEAKER_00]: You're gambling!
- 24:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's gambling, the humans, the refs are humans too, the officials are humans too.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: The rest everyone else, the whole game's got a sufferer, so we can get it right for the gamblers, and the answer that's yes, yes, apparently, that's the answer.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I get it.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_00]: I've gambled on games.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you're furious if something's wrong.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_00]: But what it is created, I think, is it has moved the priority from, let's be entertaining.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: And they tried, like, they, I give them this, like they try to adapt all the time and speed the game up and they tried to do replay review on past interference to side of that was a disaster because it just takes too long.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, it's a rock in a hard place when everybody, all of us, you and me in the stadium, on the video screen, sitting at home on the couch, we get a bunch of camera angles.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: And they show us for the most part pretty definitively right or wrong.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: And now you're kind of stuck in a really hairy situation where if everybody else knows
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: How can you be wrong now?
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: I know a lot of things that get people worked up.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's not those.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a a late hit on the quarterback that should or shouldn't be a late hit on the quarterback.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know those were easier to officiate when nobody cared about hits on the quarterback.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_00]: You just got murdered YA title Nobody cared about Joe Montana.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_00]: They just threw him into the turf again and again and again and again and guess what?
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: That was pretty easy.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: Late hit, I didn't see one, did you see one?
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: As Montana peels himself up from three yards and it from three feet deep in the soil.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, it's like, you create more rules, you create more rules, you got more rules, you got to enforce.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: And here we are.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: Where am I not?
- 26:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm never at this place of like,
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: they are incompetent.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: Or maybe if it keeps happening like it's really hard.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, well, quarterback and have 15 incompletions, three picks, a fumble, play the next week, mad socks, but, but an official, you better be perfect.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that'll do it for now, until something else happens, and we'll talk soon.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: Better, buddy.
