- 0:00Speaker 1: Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balance Life Chiropractic.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We're with doctor Harley. Hello, doctor Harley, Hey John, how
- 0:06Speaker 2: are you.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'm good excited for the fourth of July this weekend
- 0:09Speaker 1: and a lot of people are going to be out
- 0:10Speaker 1: in the sun, and there's probably some things we should
- 0:13Speaker 1: talk about to make sure you're prepared for.
- 0:15Speaker 3: That, right, Right, Memorial weekend is like the kickoff to summer.
- 0:18Speaker 3: July fourth is like the halfway point. You know, everyone's
- 0:21Speaker 3: out cooking or shooting off fireworks or camping or late days,
- 0:25Speaker 3: a lot of time spent outside.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And this is one of those stay hydrated holidays, right.
- 0:31Speaker 3: You know, it's not gonna be as hot as it
- 0:32Speaker 3: was a few weeks ago, but temperatures are getting back
- 0:35Speaker 3: up there this weekend, so I figure this is a
- 0:37Speaker 3: good time to talk about saying, you know, proper hydration
- 0:39Speaker 3: morning signs are like heat, exhaustion, heat stroke, because you
- 0:42Speaker 3: don't want those.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So if I'm drinking beer all weekend, does that count?
- 0:47Speaker 3: No? It does not.
- 0:48Speaker 2: That's not hydrating.
- 0:49Speaker 3: No, it's very dehydrating.
- 0:51Speaker 2: So that's actually the opposite of hydration.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Right, So if you are drinking a few beverages like that.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Make sure you're drinking some water. You know, I would
- 0:58Speaker 3: say ideally to keep one to one ratio. If you're
- 1:01Speaker 3: drinking a beer, drink of water in between, even though
- 1:04Speaker 3: it has liquid in it, or if.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It's light beard does that counter same thing? Right?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Alcohol in general is dehydrating, same with caffeine. You if
- 1:12Speaker 3: you're drinking a lot of coffee and tea, you know, yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 3: sure youre drinking liquid, but those extra stuff in the
- 1:18Speaker 3: liquid are dehydrinks. So you need to make sure you
- 1:20Speaker 3: drinking plenty of water, regular water.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Now just plain water.
- 1:23Speaker 1: What if I do something like a power aid or
- 1:25Speaker 1: a Gatorador one of those aid things, does that help
- 1:28Speaker 1: or is that different.
- 1:29Speaker 3: To those are great if you're doing a lot of sweating.
- 1:31Speaker 3: You know, if you're not really sweating or like doing
- 1:33Speaker 3: a lot of excessive amount of activity, it's not really necessary.
- 1:36Speaker 3: But yeah, if you find that you're sweating a lot,
- 1:39Speaker 3: it's important to drink those because it's gonna help replenish
- 1:41Speaker 3: your electrolytes. Because we lose a lot of those electrolytes
- 1:43Speaker 3: like sodium potassium in our sweat. So if we're just
- 1:46Speaker 3: drinking water, you're's gonna still have some issues because you
- 1:49Speaker 3: don't have those electrolytes in water. So that's where that
- 1:53Speaker 3: elect you know, electrolyte powders, gatorades, power raids, that kind
- 1:58Speaker 3: of stuff are going to help replenish that can keep
- 1:59Speaker 3: you more hydrated.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I saw a thing on the internet, so it has
- 2:02Speaker 1: to be true, right, I saw a lady talking about
- 2:05Speaker 1: she puts salt.
- 2:06Speaker 2: In her water in the summer. Is there a reason
- 2:08Speaker 2: for that? I was like, what is going on with
- 2:10Speaker 2: this lady?
- 2:10Speaker 3: Salt isn't electrolytes.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Oh maybe that's why.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of those electric potters do have salt
- 2:15Speaker 3: in them, or it's a salt and potassium.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So I thought she was just nuts, but too much salt.
- 2:21Speaker 2: She might be nuts anyway, but she also has maybe
- 2:23Speaker 2: a little something.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Then too much salt is not necessarily a good thing though. Either.
- 2:26Speaker 3: A watermelon is a good fruit. If you're eating a
- 2:28Speaker 3: lot of watermelon, it's really hydrating because it is water melon.
- 2:32Speaker 2: It is so good too.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So all of that to say, make sure you drink
- 2:36Speaker 1: plenty of water, and then also probably if you can
- 2:39Speaker 1: stay out of the direct sun too, right right.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You know, shade, make sure we're in sunscreen. If you
- 2:44Speaker 3: are outside, you'll protect your skin from those harmful UV rays,
- 2:48Speaker 3: especially if you're out in the middle part of the days.
- 2:50Speaker 3: That's when those TV rays are the highest and the hottest. Yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 3: making sure that, Yeah, being more weather aware.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I remember this young man that I knew twenty years ago.
- 2:59Speaker 1: It was me back then, was maybe more than probably
- 3:02Speaker 1: twenty five years ago. It's before I met Heidi, so
- 3:04Speaker 1: maybe thirty years ago.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Holy cow. Anyway, it was on a.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Hot summer weekend that I fell asleep in a lawn
- 3:11Speaker 1: chair in the sun.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I do not recommend. I bet you had.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I was so sunburnedeing, oh yeah, and then there's all
- 3:19Speaker 1: kinds of people around me. Everybody just left me there
- 3:21Speaker 1: and I was zonked out for like two hours, just
- 3:23Speaker 1: laying in the sun, no sunscreen, of course, because I
- 3:25Speaker 1: was an idiot.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So I don't encourage you to do that.
- 3:28Speaker 1: If you're going to be taking a nap in a chair,
- 3:29Speaker 1: even if you might happen to take a nap and chair,
- 3:31Speaker 1: make sure it's in the shade, right, and even.
- 3:34Speaker 3: In the shade, you can still get affected by UV.
- 3:36Speaker 3: So I meanybe, just don't take a nap outside, that's
- 3:38Speaker 3: right without sunscreen or yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I've got many other things you should avoid as well.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Just let's get together. I don't I don't want to
- 3:44Speaker 1: put them all out there on the show. If somebody
- 3:46Speaker 1: listening would like to reach out to Balance Life Chiropractic,
