- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, how you doing.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is Freddie Rodriguez.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Hey, I'm Wilmer Valderrama, and welcome to those amigos, which
- 0:10Speaker 3: today is going to be Today.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Well, I couldn't be more excited and proud. We've been waiting.
- 0:21Speaker 3: This man is one of the busiest men in Hollywood rightfully,
- 0:25Speaker 3: so one of the most talented guys we have in
- 0:27Speaker 3: our culture, doing the most mainstream you can get and
- 0:31Speaker 3: also doing exceptional work that's gonna last for a very
- 0:34Speaker 3: very long time. Guero is a very dear friend of mine.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Right we've been in each other's lives and careers, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 3: for the last man, I don't know, fifteen years or so.
- 0:45Speaker 2: No, no, I said ten.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What did you guys work?
- 0:48Speaker 4: Well, i'd see, they'll ray Rice. Well, when we would
- 0:53Speaker 4: have been twenty thirteen, Yes for you and I first
- 0:56Speaker 4: kind of intersected, even though I had been, of course
- 0:59Speaker 4: my iring your careers from afar and and we're not
- 1:02Speaker 4: too far from age. You guys are maybe just touch
- 1:06Speaker 4: touch my senior, I'd say, but although you look, but
- 1:12Speaker 4: you know I was. I was growing up in Austin
- 1:14Speaker 4: as an actor, and I was a of course clocking.
- 1:17Speaker 4: You know, the people who look like me, feel like
- 1:20Speaker 4: they've come from my background who are having these great
- 1:22Speaker 4: success And you needed only look to that seventies show
- 1:26Speaker 4: and see Fez on that that show, and and you,
- 1:28Speaker 4: of course doing everything you did. We talked a little
- 1:32Speaker 4: bit before we started this about these kind of crazy
- 1:36Speaker 4: interwoven paths that we've led, and uh, Freddie, when you
- 1:40Speaker 4: were in town working with Robert, because that's where we work.
- 1:42Speaker 4: We worked with Robert Rodgers.
- 1:44Speaker 2: The leads of his Yeah, lead Robert and this.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Part and and uh, when l Ray started, there was
- 1:53Speaker 4: From Dusk Till Dawn and Matador, which the two original
- 1:55Speaker 4: programs that were premiering their inaugural year, and you and
- 1:59Speaker 4: I were the leads of those, and so we did
- 2:01Speaker 4: a bunch of press together and all came through and
- 2:03Speaker 4: and then uh, but of course Freddy did Planet Terror,
- 2:06Speaker 4: and one of my best friends from high school was
- 2:08Speaker 4: your standing. His name is Nicholas Signs, and he was
- 2:10Speaker 4: your standing no way man, So there was.
- 2:13Speaker 2: A that's so crazy.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Wow, Yeah, that's a small world.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I was just talking of today. I told him
- 2:18Speaker 4: I was going to see you. And so I don't
- 2:20Speaker 4: know whether you remember Nick or not. He he certainly
- 2:22Speaker 4: remembers you and always always uh sung your praises. So
- 2:26Speaker 4: we yeah, all all roads do lead.
- 2:28Speaker 3: To uh and and and you know, to to your point, brother,
- 2:33Speaker 3: one of the things I want to I want to
- 2:34Speaker 3: start by giving you some consistent flowers first and foremost,
- 2:38Speaker 3: because you know, I think we rarely happened to be
- 2:43Speaker 3: in the same room together to kind of make sure
- 2:46Speaker 3: that we we tell each other that we see each other,
- 2:50Speaker 3: that we support each other, that we uplift each other,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and that we we got to be part of each
- 2:54Speaker 3: other's journeys and you know, and and we bonded over
- 2:57Speaker 3: the fact that we didn't have that growing up in industry,
- 3:00Speaker 3: right we were the one Latino in the room, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 3: and none of us were allowed to be in the
- 3:05Speaker 3: same shows together, in the same movies because they just
- 3:07Speaker 3: they had one of us.
- 3:09Speaker 2: There, you know.
- 3:10Speaker 3: And the idea that we needed community and that we
- 3:13Speaker 3: could have used that community to say, hey, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 3: we're all walking in the same direction, how do we
- 3:20Speaker 3: how do we set each other up for success? And
- 3:22Speaker 3: all that stuff is something that we really wanted to
- 3:25Speaker 3: cultivate it more. When I first I remember when when
- 3:29Speaker 3: Robert was casting Matator, you know, and Robert Rodriguez had
- 3:33Speaker 3: lunched a network called the l Ray Network, which was
- 3:35Speaker 3: kind of all Robert Rodriguez universe collided into one d yet.
- 3:38Speaker 4: All the shaw Scope Kung Fu pictures, that's right, all
- 3:41Speaker 4: of you know, all of the Escape from New York.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Riding and stuff like that.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Stuff that was anything that basically what he was playing
- 3:49Speaker 4: in his office while he was thinking of he programmed
- 3:53Speaker 4: it based on cable network, that's right.
- 3:56Speaker 3: And he wanted to do this show where it was
- 3:59Speaker 3: gonna like a Gina Latino James Bond, right, and he
- 4:03Speaker 3: was going to be a soccer player, and you know
- 4:05Speaker 3: he was also at the same time it's going to
- 4:06Speaker 3: be kind of like a double agent kind of kind
- 4:08Speaker 3: of situation.
- 4:09Speaker 4: And the lucky for me, Wilmer was already tasked the
- 4:11Speaker 4: big man, the lead on the other show from.
- 4:14Speaker 2: That already playing in the backy.
- 4:17Speaker 3: My my, My point I'm making is that the search,
- 4:20Speaker 3: you know, and when Robert is looking for someone, but
- 4:24Speaker 3: for something in someone, the show is not gonna give
- 4:27Speaker 3: me until he finds it, you know. And the search
- 4:31Speaker 3: began for the lead of this like Latin Flair James Bond.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I mean, the budgets were dope, you know, so like that,
- 4:37Speaker 3: then the production value and he was going to direct
- 4:39Speaker 3: a few episodes and stuff, so it was going to
- 4:41Speaker 3: be it was a hot, hot, hot project.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I remember very clearly around that time, I fired my
- 4:48Speaker 4: first agent in town because they didn't think that they
- 4:53Speaker 4: could get me in for that. I remember this. This
- 4:55Speaker 4: was in twenty twelve. I was with a small boutique
- 4:58Speaker 4: agency and I had mentioned to them because I had
- 5:01Speaker 4: seen my wife. She was she was really good about
- 5:04Speaker 4: she'd always find she was getting the breakdowns from something
- 5:06Speaker 4: someone was letting, letting her have their password to get
- 5:10Speaker 4: the breakdowns. She's like, baby, there's this part they're looking
- 5:13Speaker 4: for Latino James Bond. You'd be perfect. And I mentioned
- 5:16Speaker 4: it to this agent and they're like, well, I think
- 5:18Speaker 4: they're already kind of maybe finding their people. You might
- 5:22Speaker 4: not be able to get in. And I remember deciding
- 5:25Speaker 4: there and then that this wasn't the place for me.
- 5:27Speaker 4: But I'm not the kind of person that kind of
- 5:29Speaker 4: goes behind people's backs. So I decided that I needed
- 5:32Speaker 4: to fire them first before I commenced my search for
- 5:34Speaker 4: somebody else. So I did. I severed tized with them.
- 5:40Speaker 4: My grandfather passed away, I had to go back to Austin.
- 5:42Speaker 4: This was around Christmas time, so I went back to Austin,
- 5:46Speaker 4: no agent, having feeling, you know, is that the lowest
- 5:50Speaker 4: the low I could be because at that point I
- 5:52Speaker 4: was the oldest male in my family, oldest male in
- 5:55Speaker 4: my immediate family. My father had passed when I was
- 5:57Speaker 4: before I was born, my grandfather Ike when I was
- 6:02Speaker 4: on my fifth birthday, and then my grandfather David at
- 6:04Speaker 4: this point, and then of course my uncle David pass
- 6:06Speaker 4: when I was twelve. So this was this was a
- 6:08Speaker 4: moment in my life where I was like, man, I think,
- 6:11Speaker 4: you know, I'm going home, feeling about as low as
- 6:14Speaker 4: I could feel, not knowing what I was going to
- 6:17Speaker 4: do when I got back to LA But thankfully my family,
- 6:20Speaker 4: all my friends in Austin really replenished my creative well
- 6:23Speaker 4: and made me feel strong and and and and that
- 6:28Speaker 4: I had people on my side. At you know, I
- 6:32Speaker 4: knew that I had my back watching my six and
- 6:34Speaker 4: taking care of me and believed in me. So I
- 6:36Speaker 4: went back and my manager set up some meetings in
- 6:39Speaker 4: the first agent I met with, who I'm not with
- 6:43Speaker 4: them anymore, but they were really, really Uh. You know,
- 6:46Speaker 4: they had the vision that they shared the same vision
- 6:48Speaker 4: I had for myself.
- 6:49Speaker 2: They saw you as you saw yourself, which is the.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Guy, you know, the ground wire, the center of the
- 6:55Speaker 4: story and capable of caring the the responsibility at that entails.
- 7:01Speaker 4: And uh, and I'm in that meeting. And then shortly
- 7:04Speaker 4: shortly after the meeting starts, you know what, there's this
- 7:06Speaker 4: one thing that Robert Rodrigue is doing. They're looking for
- 7:09Speaker 4: Latino James Bond. You'd be great for it. And I
- 7:11Speaker 4: was like, I already had decided, Okay, these people were
- 7:13Speaker 4: the people. Left the meeting, told my manager that we're
- 7:16Speaker 4: going with them. Within a couple of weeks time, they
- 7:19Speaker 4: got me the audition with Mary Mary Renew.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yes, I've been Hey, big shout out to Mary, big
- 7:24Speaker 2: shout out, part of all of our careers.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Yeah, and she's actually she actually cast me in The Terminalists,
- 7:29Speaker 4: which I'm in right now, And she's actually she's now
- 7:32Speaker 4: our casting director for the Last of Us. So Mary
- 7:34Speaker 4: is doing a lot of a lot of work and
- 7:37Speaker 4: has championed all of us and a great, a great
- 7:41Speaker 4: debt of gratitude. But so that happens, they get me
- 7:46Speaker 4: to read with Mary, I go in. Uh I met
- 7:49Speaker 4: Omar Epps. I remember that he was he was was
- 7:52Speaker 4: at the audition. Yeah, yeah, it was yeah, it was
- 7:54Speaker 4: really fun. And then and so I uh I it
- 8:00Speaker 4: it kind of starts to progress. And then we had
- 8:03Speaker 4: a to the point where I'm doing a I have
- 8:07Speaker 4: to meet with Robert. So Robert comes in to La,
- 8:11Speaker 4: which he hates coming to La. The fact that he
- 8:13Speaker 4: comes for Jessica's parties is crazy. It's jessic alb parties.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Did you you here are meetings or whatever? He goes, no, no,
- 8:20Speaker 2: I just came here.
- 8:21Speaker 4: For Jessica's Like, oh, wait, of course, and the I mean,
- 8:25Speaker 4: but she is the dark Angel and yees, yes, yes,
- 8:27Speaker 4: and he has a soft spot in her heart for her,
- 8:29Speaker 4: as we all do. She's aeful person, but one of them. Uh.
- 8:33Speaker 4: So he he comes to La. He's staying at the
- 8:36Speaker 4: Four Seasons where he always stays. He and I have
- 8:38Speaker 4: this meeting and uh we order iced tea's like a
- 8:42Speaker 4: couple of proper Texas boys do. Because he doesn't drink,
- 8:45Speaker 4: even though he tells me the story that he ordered
- 8:47Speaker 4: the one millionth drink at the Four Seasons at some
- 8:50Speaker 4: point in history and they gave him this pass for
- 8:54Speaker 4: free drinks for life, but it's completely lost on him
- 8:56Speaker 4: because he doesn't drink alcohol. But he gets all the
- 8:59Speaker 4: free iced tea as he wants. And We're sitting there
- 9:02Speaker 4: talking about mostly music and our families and my grandfather
- 9:06Speaker 4: who had just passed. And I'm having this meeting on
- 9:09Speaker 4: February nineteenth, which is my grandfather's birthday. And I tell
- 9:13Speaker 4: him that this is wild because my grandpa, when I
- 9:17Speaker 4: was in Austin, used to have a scrap book of
- 9:19Speaker 4: all the plays I was in, you know, reviews that
- 9:22Speaker 4: would be in the Austin American Statesman, which was our
- 9:26Speaker 4: hometown newspaper, and he'd keep the scrap book of all
- 9:30Speaker 4: movies and different things I'd do. And then he'd but
- 9:33Speaker 4: he'd also have bits and pieces of people in town
- 9:35Speaker 4: who you know Rick linklater, and of course Robert Rodriguez
- 9:38Speaker 4: is like, Papa, this is the guy he should work with. Well,
- 9:41Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, well, you know, a few things
- 9:43Speaker 4: got to happen before that happens. And flash forward, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 4: a decade, and I'm sitting there with Robert telling him
- 9:51Speaker 4: this story, and meeting goes really well, I think, And
- 9:55Speaker 4: then He's like, well, I got another meeting. Somebody else
- 9:57Speaker 4: is coming to here in a minute. I was like,
- 10:00Speaker 4: all right, well, i'll see you later. I shook his
- 10:01Speaker 4: hand and say, I see you later. I bought this
- 10:03Speaker 4: death trap of a land Rover when I first moved
- 10:05Speaker 4: to La. The thing is, the thing almost killed me
- 10:09Speaker 4: many times. The break would go all the way to
- 10:11Speaker 4: the way to the floorboard, and I'd have to pump
- 10:13Speaker 4: it just for it to catch, you know. And and
- 10:16Speaker 4: I could hear it. I could hear the valet pulling
- 10:18Speaker 4: it up from wherever they were pulling it, because it
- 10:20Speaker 4: just it rattled like a tin can. And I was
- 10:23Speaker 4: really embarrassed because that thing was screeching all the way
- 10:25Speaker 4: when it came up to the drive. But I left
- 10:28Speaker 4: that feeling really good about it. And then flash forward
- 10:32Speaker 4: a couple of weeks and they decided they wanted to
- 10:34Speaker 4: screen test me. So I go and I meet J. D.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Pardo for the first time, who I love. I just
- 10:39Speaker 4: love so much, and we became friends since, and we've
- 10:41Speaker 4: had so many moments where it was either him or me,
- 10:45Speaker 4: and uh, and the ones I didn't get he got,
- 10:48Speaker 4: and the ones he didn't get by I got and
- 10:49Speaker 4: it's just hilarious. And we had this beautiful conversation a
- 10:54Speaker 4: few months ago. We were at this event and just
- 10:56Speaker 4: and they're like, man, we it's so funny how parallel
- 10:59Speaker 4: we've run. And uh, but we've but we've always been
- 11:03Speaker 4: kind of supported from a farm and were never really
- 11:05Speaker 4: kind of connected, and now we've we've connected. We talked
- 11:07Speaker 4: quite a bit about it. But I remember that day.
- 11:09Speaker 4: It was both of us sitting there signing our our
- 11:12Speaker 4: our next potentially next six years away and uh, gladly
- 11:17Speaker 4: because my first opportunity of of that magnitude, and so
- 11:24Speaker 4: I signed my deal. I go into the room. Robert's
- 11:26Speaker 4: there on a on a skype call because it wasn't
- 11:29Speaker 4: zoom back then, right, two thousand pager now exactly, so
- 11:39Speaker 4: they were all and by the time it was a
- 11:41Speaker 4: revolutionary I was like, wow, this is uh some video
- 11:44Speaker 4: called demolition Man type and and so there I do
- 11:49Speaker 4: my thing feels really natural, as involuntary as breathing. It
- 11:53Speaker 4: just felt right. And then and I can see Robert
- 11:57Speaker 4: there's there. What do you think, Robert? And he's there
- 11:59Speaker 4: on the screen.
- 12:00Speaker 2: You say that, what do you think they do about?
- 12:03Speaker 3: To say?
- 12:03Speaker 2: That's awesome. What do you think, many man, what do
- 12:05Speaker 2: you think?
- 12:06Speaker 4: Where he goes he takes it, takes a long pause,
- 12:09Speaker 4: he takes out his earbuds, and and then finally I
- 12:11Speaker 4: think we can go into production.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And my god.
- 12:14Speaker 4: And then uh, I felt this wave of kind of
- 12:17Speaker 4: flush of I guess just excitement and adrenaline.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Like surreal right like you're standing in front of Robert
- 12:25Speaker 3: Driguez was doing his first two TV shows in.
- 12:27Speaker 2: The history of his career.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Yeah, like and he's gonna direct it, and he's he's
- 12:31Speaker 3: writing it, you know, and.
- 12:32Speaker 1: You're gonna be an action hero and Robert.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's it's uh. I mean, well, well, when
- 12:39Speaker 4: I left the room, the first you know, doubt creeps in.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Oh maybe maybe he meant the other guy. Yeah, and
- 12:46Speaker 4: the other guy already or j D. I think Ja
- 12:48Speaker 4: was coming in after me, but he was he was Uh,
- 12:51Speaker 4: he had made it his call. He had made his call,
- 12:53Speaker 4: I think. And then uh, uh, you know, there's a
- 12:56Speaker 4: lot of history. You know, there's a lot of history there.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I'm from Austin where he went to school.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Is that was that where you were born?
- 13:02Speaker 4: I was born and raised in Austin. Your family goes
- 13:05Speaker 4: deep back into many generations. If you know, five generations
- 13:09Speaker 4: in Austin and Bastrop, Texas.
- 13:11Speaker 2: What what how far back do you track?
- 13:13Speaker 4: I mean all the way back to my Apache heritage.
- 13:17Speaker 4: My my great great grandfather is was Geronimo Luna was
- 13:21Speaker 4: his name, great great great I guess. Uh. He was
- 13:25Speaker 4: actually born twelve years before the Great War Chief Geronimo.
- 13:30Speaker 4: So the fact that he is named Geronimo is actually
- 13:32Speaker 4: interesting because it was he actually predates the Great War Chief.
- 13:37Speaker 4: But the on the family, you know, the Apache lands
- 13:40Speaker 4: extent all the way to Durango and and but there
- 13:43Speaker 4: in the hill country is the Lepan Apache and uh,
- 13:48Speaker 4: and so it's just a a long time in Austin.
- 13:52Speaker 4: He was from Austin. I worked with Marcell, his little brother.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Marcel was the DP of my friend Rohelio's student film
- 14:00Speaker 4: when he was getting his master's and so we shot
- 14:04Speaker 4: it at Marcel's house. And so when it came down
- 14:07Speaker 4: to it, when he was making his decision, he told
- 14:09Speaker 4: me this, He said, you know, I asked a round Austin,
- 14:11Speaker 4: and I asked and basically all my brothers and sisters
- 14:13Speaker 4: know you. You know, Roxy knows you. Marcel knows you.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Everybody has really great things to say. You did a
- 14:18Speaker 4: great job in the read and and and so you
- 14:21Speaker 4: were my guy and uh. I remember when I got
- 14:25Speaker 4: the call. I was on my way to Trader Joe's
- 14:27Speaker 4: and I don't remember where my wife was, but I
- 14:32Speaker 4: just got They just called me and said you're you know,
- 14:34Speaker 4: you're the leader. I would have been my manager at
- 14:38Speaker 4: the time. Also, bro, who's a partner? How they bak
- 14:41Speaker 4: take no?
- 14:42Speaker 2: I mean the you know when you're going back home?
- 14:45Speaker 4: Well they got Well that was the whole plan when
- 14:47Speaker 4: I came out here was was for them to send
- 14:50Speaker 4: me back with a bigger part because every every show,
- 14:53Speaker 4: because a lot of was happening in Austin at the time.
- 14:56Speaker 4: But it would it would only extend as far as
- 14:59Speaker 4: the kind of day player roles for us.
- 15:00Speaker 5: You know.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I did a day player role in a picture called
- 15:05Speaker 4: The Temple Grandon, which was the first time I was
- 15:08Speaker 4: in the hair and makeup trailer with Catherine O'Hara, who
- 15:11Speaker 4: I worked with on the Last of Us. I posted
- 15:13Speaker 4: this really interested, this really cool fifteen sixteen years apart,
- 15:16Speaker 4: this photograph of us, and we recreated the composition of
- 15:22Speaker 4: that photo in the hair and makeup trailer. But anyway,
- 15:25Speaker 4: just day player roles that they would offer in Austin,
- 15:28Speaker 4: and so my whole thing was to go to La.
- 15:31Speaker 4: They'll send you back with a bigger part. Wow. But
- 15:35Speaker 4: we shot Matador in in La. Yeah, oh you shot it. Yeah,
- 15:41Speaker 4: it was It was based. The character was a Dea
- 15:46Speaker 4: agent who was recruited by the CIA to take down
- 15:49Speaker 4: this nefarious character played by Alfred Molina for the great.
- 15:53Speaker 3: By the way, they get Alfred million to play the
- 15:55Speaker 3: main thing, It's like, oh, man, Alfred is a good.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Amazing thing. Amazing dude. There was just an incredible honor
- 16:02Speaker 4: to work with him, and Sammy Rotv was in the show,
- 16:05Speaker 4: and a bunch of other really great actors, and.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Get some great cameos in there too, some great Well
- 16:10Speaker 3: you guys showed that you guys really went to Hollywood
- 16:13Speaker 3: party and there we all of us the casts from
- 16:15Speaker 3: from that's still done.
- 16:16Speaker 2: We like sit around a little table and now he
- 16:18Speaker 2: just kind of walks.
- 16:19Speaker 4: By a young a young he's a Gonzales.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a shout out to a so also champion
- 16:24Speaker 2: in fealing it for everybody.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Man.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Absolutely, we love I love that Gal. She was great.
- 16:39Speaker 4: I mean when I got the part, I came down
- 16:41Speaker 4: south By you guys were doing you guys built a
- 16:43Speaker 4: titty twister. Yeah, at south By Southwest, which is of
- 16:46Speaker 4: course the bar and from the tunstill dawn and we
- 16:49Speaker 4: all went and Robert was jamming my cousins who were
- 16:51Speaker 4: in his band. Another connection that we had, my cousin
- 16:54Speaker 4: Delk Steel band named Steel when they played with Robert,
- 16:57Speaker 4: they play under the band name Ching Going Ching.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Realized right, but like literally not until very late I
- 17:05Speaker 3: put that together.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Like I was like, oh my god, you're related to
- 17:08Speaker 2: the bad too.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Like it was just well, we're actually we're actually just
- 17:10Speaker 4: cousins by you know, the primo is the way we are. Yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 4: my actual blood cousin is the guitar tech. But but
- 17:19Speaker 4: my grandma's made a name of Castile and uh and
- 17:22Speaker 4: her uh uh and the boys we just always said
- 17:25Speaker 4: were some yeah and so, but yeah that you know,
- 17:33Speaker 4: when Robert Casserine they and then he's when he was
- 17:36Speaker 4: doing press, he was like, yeah, you know, I saw
- 17:38Speaker 4: this guy and I knew I knew him, And I
- 17:40Speaker 4: was like, wait a second, I think think I think
- 17:43Speaker 4: your cousin's in my band. Sometimes that's the way deals
- 17:46Speaker 4: come together.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Did your cousins never bring you around when you were younger?
- 17:50Speaker 4: Yeah. The first time I met Robert was at La
- 17:54Speaker 4: Zona Rosa in Austin, Texas, which is an awesome, awesome
- 17:57Speaker 4: bar that's no longer there creditable music venue. He was playing.
- 18:02Speaker 4: It was George Lopez's birthday. George was there, drunk off
- 18:06Speaker 4: his ass like playing What did he play? I think
- 18:11Speaker 4: he played iron Man. I think like they gave him
- 18:14Speaker 4: the guitar and he like played the rift to iron
- 18:16Speaker 4: Man and then he staged dove off the stage, George away. Yeah,
- 18:21Speaker 4: And I remember that. It was after I had done
- 18:24Speaker 4: my first feature, which is this independent called Falter Grace,
- 18:27Speaker 4: which went to south By Southwestern Competition in two thousand
- 18:29Speaker 4: and five. And I had a copy of this, a
- 18:31Speaker 4: bunch of copies of the DVD, and I remember I
- 18:35Speaker 4: met him after the show. They my cousin went to
- 18:39Speaker 4: introduce me, and my mom gave him the DVD and no,
- 18:43Speaker 4: he didn't even touch it. And then Cecilia, who was
- 18:45Speaker 4: his assistant at the time, I think she may still
- 18:47Speaker 4: be graps it, puts it in her bag and probably
- 18:50Speaker 4: never saw the light a day again. You out with
- 18:53Speaker 4: my mom. This was years This was two thousand and
- 18:57Speaker 4: this would have been yeah, around like two thousand and five. Yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 4: and then it was eight years later that that he
- 19:03Speaker 4: and I were on set doing the show and that
- 19:05Speaker 4: that when you guys did your cameo. That was the
- 19:07Speaker 4: first episode and we were in up in Hummingbird Ranch
- 19:12Speaker 4: up here in see Me Valley where they shoot a
- 19:14Speaker 4: lot of stuff, and it was a really really incredible
- 19:18Speaker 4: I mean, you're sitting there, you're all dressed up all
- 19:20Speaker 4: nights like this cool super spy and who's who becomes
- 19:24Speaker 4: a soccer star? Yeah, infiltrates the soccer team to take
- 19:27Speaker 4: down Fred's character and and doing all this really cool
- 19:32Speaker 4: kind of espionage, you know, slight ahead and.
- 19:35Speaker 2: It had the toys too, the toys there.
- 19:38Speaker 4: And it was just it was just such an incredible experience.
- 19:42Speaker 5: Yeah, what was that like for you? As like a
- 19:44Speaker 5: young guy, young actor from Austin. You've been here pounding
- 19:48Speaker 5: a pavement and then like your first big thing just
- 19:51Speaker 5: so happens to be with the guy who plays in
- 19:54Speaker 5: the band with your cousins. Yeah, well it just so
- 19:57Speaker 5: happens to be from your hometown and.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Who we all you know, grew up idolizing.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And.
- 20:03Speaker 5: Did you feel like a deep sense of like responsibility
- 20:06Speaker 5: it was I felt.
- 20:09Speaker 4: I certainly felt those feelings. Also felt this sense of
- 20:14Speaker 4: kind of manifestation of yeah, you know, an illumination of
- 20:22Speaker 4: the path and the and the and kind of take
- 20:27Speaker 4: like stepping into stride of what kind of I was
- 20:29Speaker 4: supposed to what I was supposed to do? You know?
- 20:34Speaker 4: You know, I think I think at some point, especially
- 20:38Speaker 4: with us in our community and the way, you know,
- 20:41Speaker 4: back then, when it was few and far between, you
- 20:43Speaker 4: had to believe that it was kind of you and
- 20:46Speaker 4: only only you that could that could do this particular thing.
- 20:49Speaker 4: You know what I mean. It was the idea that
- 20:52Speaker 4: what is mine is mine and no one else's and
- 20:54Speaker 4: what is another man's is his, and I don't cover
- 20:57Speaker 4: at that, and I support and celebrate that which is.
- 21:00Speaker 4: It's kind of a beautiful thing about this podcast, what
- 21:02Speaker 4: you guys are doing, and the way you've treated me
- 21:05Speaker 4: my entire career since I got here, since we first met,
- 21:07Speaker 4: you know, to be to be able to communicate with
- 21:11Speaker 4: you and text you and have this, have you be
- 21:13Speaker 4: as couraging as you have been and always so supportive
- 21:15Speaker 4: and that's the idea. You know, we do we do
- 21:19Speaker 4: our thing, deliver excellence and given the opportunity, as Robert
- 21:23Speaker 4: says in his book, and and then you know, shine
- 21:27Speaker 4: turn and pivot and shine that spotlight on others so
- 21:30Speaker 4: that you know, the path stays illuminated, the door stays open,
- 21:33Speaker 4: and people can follow in. And I do remember just feeling,
- 21:37Speaker 4: you know, it's the first time I've been on a
- 21:38Speaker 4: set where it's you know, two hundred extras, and the
- 21:42Speaker 4: first time I've worked on anything pasted a couple of months,
- 21:44Speaker 4: you know, of plays that I would do in Austin
- 21:46Speaker 4: that I get paid five hundred dollars for the entire run.
- 21:49Speaker 4: And and and now here I am full six month
- 21:54Speaker 4: engagement as the leader of this show, working in opposite
- 21:57Speaker 4: out for Lena, and there's a whole new new world.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Did you have to train hard for that?
- 22:03Speaker 4: Oh yeah, we trained a lot. We We trained with
- 22:05Speaker 4: a lot of professional soccer players first and foremost because
- 22:08Speaker 4: I had to kind of make that passable. And then
- 22:12Speaker 4: worked with Chick Daniels, who was this was kind of
- 22:14Speaker 4: the first.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Uh.
- 22:17Speaker 4: It's funny because I'm going to see Arrn Terrorn, Tarrann
- 22:20Speaker 4: tactical Sunday who trains up all of the john Wick
- 22:23Speaker 4: because people. And then course worked and worked with so
- 22:27Speaker 4: many of the guys I'm working with now on the
- 22:28Speaker 4: terminal list. But as far as being on the gun
- 22:31Speaker 4: and working with with firearms and working with with various
- 22:34Speaker 4: weapons systems, I got to meet a guy named Chick
- 22:36Speaker 4: Daniels who's former FBI, who was our technical advisor on
- 22:40Speaker 4: Manador and who I worked with another two or three
- 22:42Speaker 4: times since then. So a lot of work at the range.
- 22:48Speaker 4: And then uh, we had former professional soccer players on
- 22:52Speaker 4: our team to fill out the makeshift that you know.
- 22:55Speaker 4: We were the LA Riot Right team, and we played
- 22:59Speaker 4: all the games down at what at the time was
- 23:03Speaker 4: the stub Hub Center which is now the Dignity Health
- 23:06Speaker 4: Center where the LA Galaxy play, and so that's where
- 23:08Speaker 4: all we shot all the home games and we developed
- 23:11Speaker 4: a relationship there. And at the time Beckham was a
- 23:14Speaker 4: owner of the team, that's right, and so I got that.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Was a very pioneer moment for LA Soccer.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Was United States Soccer and Ben comes in and all
- 23:21Speaker 3: of a sudden, the league is feeling a little different. Absolutely,
- 23:25Speaker 3: people are going to the games. They were going crazy
- 23:27Speaker 3: and just it's it was insane.
- 23:28Speaker 4: And now we got a traffic coaches l A f
- 23:31Speaker 4: C versus LA Galaxy, and you know they get there's
- 23:33Speaker 4: just a and just the the the game itself and
- 23:37Speaker 4: the league itself, you know, messy and everybody over in Miami.
- 23:40Speaker 4: You know it's it's We were kind of ahead of
- 23:43Speaker 4: the curve at the time, and there weren't a lot
- 23:46Speaker 4: of soccer shows out there. I think that that was
- 23:49Speaker 4: a kind of a special legacy that that show has.
- 23:53Speaker 1: So you were pulling like double duty then high.
- 23:56Speaker 5: You were at one part of the day you're learning
- 23:59Speaker 5: how to shoot, you're learning, and then the other part
- 24:01Speaker 5: of the day learning how to become like a professional soccer.
- 24:03Speaker 4: I still have like a horrible turf toe on my
- 24:06Speaker 4: right foot from one take where I had to I mean,
- 24:11Speaker 4: it was a beautiful in this show. It's a beautiful
- 24:13Speaker 4: goal I basically, I basically, I mean where the spiders
- 24:17Speaker 4: make their webs man, I just just beautifully kind of
- 24:20Speaker 4: like curving, oh right, corner up the top corner man
- 24:24Speaker 4: and the and then the other take, I meg the
- 24:27Speaker 4: keeper and that one looks great too. But then there
- 24:29Speaker 4: there was one take where I went, I run all
- 24:32Speaker 4: the way down the field. There's about one hundred and
- 24:34Speaker 4: fifty some odd extras that they had to move around
- 24:38Speaker 4: the stadium to just show it, and then we can
- 24:40Speaker 4: kind of, you know, with v effects, they were able
- 24:42Speaker 4: to populate the entire stadium and but one of them,
- 24:47Speaker 4: I basically go to strike the ball and I just
- 24:49Speaker 4: dig my entire foot into the turf and I can
- 24:53Speaker 4: still feel it on my big toe right this is
- 24:55Speaker 4: this is been twelve years later, still feel it and
- 25:00Speaker 4: it's just but but that that take is amazing because
- 25:03Speaker 4: it was just it's just it was just surreal just
- 25:05Speaker 4: to have the whole experience of that. And then go
- 25:08Speaker 4: up to the crowd and I grab one of the
- 25:09Speaker 4: red ree Riot flags and my nickname was the Matador
- 25:12Speaker 4: in the show, and so, uh so I take it
- 25:15Speaker 4: out like it's a you know, it's a cape and
- 25:17Speaker 4: then all my all my teammates come through with their
- 25:19Speaker 4: bullhorns and they're kind of, you know this this beautiful
- 25:22Speaker 4: kind of they overcrank the camera. It's this slow most celebration.
- 25:25Speaker 4: It's just all of this uh, really really fun stuff
- 25:29Speaker 4: that I had. This was my dream to do something
- 25:32Speaker 4: like this and to prove that I could carry the
- 25:33Speaker 4: show and not only do that, but do it over
- 25:36Speaker 4: the course of the of the season. HM.
- 25:48Speaker 3: It was a very special moment. The paradigm had kind
- 25:52Speaker 3: of like shifted, you know, and Rubbert had made such
- 25:56Speaker 3: a signal that he was going to make these Latino
- 26:00Speaker 3: stories feel larger than life, and that he was going
- 26:02Speaker 3: to do the Robert de Riguez thing, which is like,
- 26:04Speaker 3: it doesn't matter who's on that screen. If he's a hero,
- 26:06Speaker 3: he's a hero, right. And one of the things that
- 26:10Speaker 3: I you know, reflect back to it, and I really think,
- 26:14Speaker 3: you know, I think back to in that moment, is
- 26:18Speaker 3: you know he saw something in you that he knew
- 26:21Speaker 3: that was going to you know, be a real resource
- 26:26Speaker 3: for healing for a lot of our culture. You know,
- 26:29Speaker 3: the way you command the screen, Gary, you should know
- 26:34Speaker 3: is so effortlessly powerful. And every you win on this
- 26:39Speaker 3: beautiful run right after that and you and by the way,
- 26:42Speaker 3: you haven't stopped like you've been consistently getting what you deserve,
- 26:45Speaker 3: like the parts that really showcase the beauty of the
- 26:49Speaker 3: craftsmanship of what you you know, what you've been able
- 26:51Speaker 3: to do, and and it's been beautiful to see that
- 26:56Speaker 3: in our generation this is possible, you know, the ability
- 27:02Speaker 3: that you have to create these characters and where they
- 27:06Speaker 3: really contribute not just to the story, but they contribute to,
- 27:09Speaker 3: you know, the overall lord of why you watch the show,
- 27:13Speaker 3: you know, And that's something like I just you know,
- 27:17Speaker 3: I've always try to tell you a little bit every
- 27:19Speaker 3: time I see you, but I'm so happy to tell
- 27:21Speaker 3: you that likes as rare as it was before. You're
- 27:25Speaker 3: making it feel so normal for everyone to just trust
- 27:28Speaker 3: you with the ball and trust our culture with the
- 27:30Speaker 3: ball in this way. And uh, and I think that's
- 27:33Speaker 3: something that I just I couldn't wait to tell you that,
- 27:35Speaker 3: And and think about the run that you had, like
- 27:37Speaker 3: because right after that you was it Agent?
- 27:42Speaker 4: Yeah? Right?
- 27:43Speaker 2: Was that the next one that you were like?
- 27:45Speaker 4: Well, there's a lot there's a couple of things before
- 27:48Speaker 4: we move on from that, as far as like Matador
- 27:51Speaker 4: and what it what I carried with me from that, Uh,
- 27:56Speaker 4: first of all is a memory. Well, first of all
- 27:59Speaker 4: is that guitar, which is was Robert's guitar. Yeah, and
- 28:04Speaker 4: he used to play it. He used to play it
- 28:05Speaker 4: at the monitor, as he did does with every every
- 28:08Speaker 4: production that he ever is on. Yeah, you probably experienced
- 28:11Speaker 4: that don't planetaryer. I'm sure you guys are all experienced.
- 28:13Speaker 4: But it was this guitar which he gave me. And
- 28:16Speaker 4: now I've taken to every single set that I've ever
- 28:18Speaker 4: been on. Most people know me as the guy who
- 28:20Speaker 4: brings guitar to work and never leaves the set and
- 28:23Speaker 4: plays plays tunes for everyone. But the that was really
- 28:26Speaker 4: really special because after because the night that we shot
- 28:30Speaker 4: that you did your cameo was one of the last
- 28:33Speaker 4: nights of the shoot. And so when Robert wrapped, he
- 28:35Speaker 4: got in his Dodge Challenger, which ties into Agents for
- 28:39Speaker 4: Shield because that car is based off the nineteen sixty
- 28:42Speaker 4: nine Dars Charger, which is the car that Robbie Ray's
- 28:44Speaker 4: Ghostwrider drives as the ghost Rider, but Robert had a
- 28:49Speaker 4: version of it. So there's these moments in my career
- 28:51Speaker 4: that always been this kind of foreshadowing things of what
- 28:53Speaker 4: was going to happen. Unbeknownst to me they were they
- 28:56Speaker 4: were these kind of almost like.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Prophecies from the future, goes from the future, right like manifested.
- 29:02Speaker 4: So he got in his car, took the guitar. Uh
- 29:05Speaker 4: we wrapped at four AM. I got home maybe about
- 29:07Speaker 4: five five thirty, went to bed and I was like,
- 29:09Speaker 4: I think I guess he forgot about the turn. Oh
- 29:10Speaker 4: that's okay. He calls me at six fifteen in the morning,
- 29:14Speaker 4: maybe maybe six thirty, I don't know. I answered thankfully
- 29:16Speaker 4: that I answered because I saw it was him. And
- 29:19Speaker 4: he's like, he's like, gay, so so hiffy, I forgot
- 29:21Speaker 4: to give you that guitar man, And I was like,
- 29:23Speaker 4: oh yeah, well, oh yeah, I didn't know. I didn't
- 29:27Speaker 4: remember that. And then he's like, well, I have meetings today,
- 29:29Speaker 4: but I'm gonna leave it at the conscairs at the
- 29:31Speaker 4: Four Seasons. Go pick it up whenever you can. Is like,
- 29:32Speaker 4: we'll do. So I go over there. I walk up
- 29:36Speaker 4: to the concierge. He goes back in the closet, grabs
- 29:38Speaker 4: the case. It sits right there and open. I open
- 29:40Speaker 4: it up. I look in sign and it's like pulp fiction,
- 29:42Speaker 4: just like shut and I close it up. I start
- 29:46Speaker 4: walking out the door and the concierge looks at me.
- 29:49Speaker 4: He's like hey, I'm like, yeah, old Mexican guy, you know.
- 29:53Speaker 4: He goes, are you a Mariachi?
- 29:56Speaker 2: I guess I go and I walk out the door.
- 30:00Speaker 4: My guitar case full of guns in the but no,
- 30:03Speaker 4: it was just that's that's that beautiful. And he's like,
- 30:06Speaker 4: you know what, string with black gut strings, which I
- 30:08Speaker 4: always do, and bringing to work like you always do.
- 30:10Speaker 4: And that's been with me ever since. But uh, in
- 30:12Speaker 4: the other memory mattered or before I before we move on,
- 30:16Speaker 4: at the castle at Robert's house, he hosts Barack Obama,
- 30:20Speaker 4: who was the President of the States at the time.
- 30:23Speaker 4: You were there that night. You and I had a beautiful,
- 30:25Speaker 4: beautiful time, good conversation and and uh you you and
- 30:30Speaker 4: I were part of the clutch to receive the president
- 30:32Speaker 4: enters the house, and you were talking about him showing
- 30:35Speaker 4: heroes as as he intends them to be seen, as
- 30:37Speaker 4: as they are as they appear to us in life,
- 30:40Speaker 4: which is in every shade and every shape and every face.
- 30:44Speaker 4: And and I remember when the President walks in, he
- 30:47Speaker 4: goes and he shook shakes all our hands, and I'm
- 30:49Speaker 4: there in my in this like gray suit that I
- 30:52Speaker 4: bought at the Salvation Army at one point that I
- 30:54Speaker 4: had Taylor, so it looked real nice. And uh, you
- 30:57Speaker 4: know what, that's not true, that's not the suit from
- 30:59Speaker 4: the although I did have that suit it's a freaking
- 31:02Speaker 4: beautiful suit. It sees my language. But this one was
- 31:05Speaker 4: actually one that I borrowed from set that I wore
- 31:07Speaker 4: in the show in Matador. It was a Hugo Boss
- 31:10Speaker 4: Taylor suit that I that I that fell off the
- 31:13Speaker 4: truck and belongs to me now. And so I go
- 31:17Speaker 4: up there, President shakes all our hands. It comes up
- 31:19Speaker 4: to me. Robert's like, and this is Gabrierlone. He's the
- 31:22Speaker 4: leader of our current show. He's the lead of our
- 31:23Speaker 4: current show. I'm already going into the Obama I personation.
- 31:25Speaker 4: You'd probably hear it. And he goes, He goes, and
- 31:28Speaker 4: Roberts like, this is this is what an American hero
- 31:31Speaker 4: looks like according to us, and how we want to
- 31:33Speaker 4: show it. And and the President looks for me. He's like, oh,
- 31:38Speaker 4: well he looks like a superhero, all right. Look at that.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Oh man, that's a nice, great suit. You're lia be sharre.
- 31:43Speaker 4: I was like, thank you, Sarah, appreciate it. And he goes.
- 31:46Speaker 4: We proceed to take this beautiful photograph all of us together.
- 31:49Speaker 4: I go outside. My wife's in line with Danny. Danny's there,
- 31:52Speaker 4: Danny Trejo, who was always around, and we walk in
- 31:56Speaker 4: all the people outside had paid upwards of thirty forty
- 31:58Speaker 4: fifty thousand dollars to be there meet the President the
- 32:00Speaker 4: United States. It was a fundraiser for the DNC. Coming
- 32:03Speaker 4: back inside, my wife takes a single with the with
- 32:06Speaker 4: the president. She's starting to walk off. I was like, baby,
- 32:08Speaker 4: come back for a second, mister president. This is my
- 32:10Speaker 4: wife's Smaranda. It was like, oh, great, this is your wife.
- 32:14Speaker 4: He's not getting a big head? Is he funny to me?
- 32:17Speaker 4: My wife's like, oh yeah. I was like, no, so
- 32:21Speaker 4: she's kidding. My head is firmly screwed on. He's like, well,
- 32:23Speaker 4: i'll tell you what if he is. You just talked
- 32:26Speaker 4: to Michelle. She's got some experience with.
- 32:27Speaker 2: That this guy. And by the way, it's like, this
- 32:30Speaker 2: is my life. This is imagine, like it's like your life.
- 32:33Speaker 4: And then you remember we had that discussion with him afterwards,
- 32:36Speaker 4: and I remember this was one of the times where
- 32:38Speaker 4: I was like, I wish Wilmer was native born so
- 32:40Speaker 4: that I can vote him into office to be the president,
- 32:44Speaker 4: because you were so impressive man, while I was so
- 32:47Speaker 4: kind of reserved, kind of didn't didn't you know, it
- 32:52Speaker 4: wasn't asserting, which I didn't assert myself in the conversation.
- 32:54Speaker 4: I was just listening. I was just beholding what was happening.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Wilmer was tip of the spear, front of the front
- 33:00Speaker 4: of the front of the platoon, asking important questions about
- 33:05Speaker 4: immigration policy and and and where are people are and
- 33:09Speaker 4: where are people need to be? And I remember looking
- 33:12Speaker 4: looking at you. I was next to you, and my
- 33:14Speaker 4: wife was here, and you were there just watching you
- 33:17Speaker 4: hold yourself in this way and and and in that
- 33:21Speaker 4: moment aspired to be that. So I'm thankful for that.
- 33:24Speaker 4: So I take that. I take my relationship with you,
- 33:26Speaker 4: and of course Robert and everyone else in the guitar
- 33:28Speaker 4: is what came from Mata. And then we move into
- 33:31Speaker 4: the future where well, I want.
- 33:33Speaker 2: To say some before we move on.
- 33:34Speaker 5: Uh, you know, as as you were talking about him
- 33:37Speaker 5: and the stuff that you've been doing, you know, as
- 33:40Speaker 5: someone who's a little older than.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Both of you and looked younger than.
- 33:46Speaker 5: Uh, it's been wonderful to see you uh and your trajectory. Uh,
- 33:54Speaker 5: especially And what I love is that we've all worked
- 33:56Speaker 5: with Robert right, and so we kind of know what
- 33:58Speaker 5: his ethos is right, and a lot of what he's
- 34:02Speaker 5: done is that he has made latinos commercially viable, right,
- 34:09Speaker 5: And in our industry, I think at the end of
- 34:11Speaker 5: the day, all the people on the upstairs, all they.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Care about is whether we can make the money or not.
- 34:17Speaker 5: And he's created this platform where he puts people like
- 34:22Speaker 5: us at the forefront in projects that have themes and
- 34:26Speaker 5: revolve around certain aspects that proved that we could be
- 34:31Speaker 5: commercial or the project could be commercially viable.
- 34:34Speaker 1: And you're the face of that.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Right.
- 34:35Speaker 5: You're playing a soccer player who's like a James Bond. Right,
- 34:40Speaker 5: those are commercially viable themes, yes, and he could have
- 34:43Speaker 5: chosen anybody to play that, but he chose you, right.
- 34:46Speaker 5: And by choosing you, and by you doing the last
- 34:49Speaker 5: of us and you doing everything else that you've done,
- 34:51Speaker 5: you're showing Hollywood that you can be commercially viable. And
- 34:56Speaker 5: if you can prove that you can be commercially viable,
- 34:58Speaker 5: they're going to continue to in invest in people like you.
- 35:01Speaker 5: And that's what's been so wonderful about what Robert has
- 35:04Speaker 5: been doing. It's been so wonderful about what Wilma has
- 35:06Speaker 5: been doing, and and we just got to continue to
- 35:08Speaker 5: do that. You know, the next generation of Gabriel Luna's
- 35:11Speaker 5: and Wilmer and me and and and keep creating projects.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Like that so that we can keep proving that we
- 35:16Speaker 1: can make the money.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Absolutely man. And and you know, and I think when
- 35:20Speaker 4: I think of you, I always think of I loved,
- 35:22Speaker 4: can't hardly wait. I watched the movie so much do
- 35:26Speaker 4: they say pop? And I was just like, but that
- 35:29Speaker 4: was the thing. It's like Freddie Rodriguez as this one
- 35:32Speaker 4: of the cool kids, you know, and with no specific
- 35:35Speaker 4: kind of framing of it or a reason why a
- 35:38Speaker 4: young Latino is in that position other than they are
- 35:42Speaker 4: in life. And that's just the way it works. And
- 35:44Speaker 4: I remember watching that thing. That's that's that's that's cool.
- 35:46Speaker 4: I like that. I want to I want that, you know,
- 35:49Speaker 4: and and you're and and that's the thing, man, It's
- 35:53Speaker 4: just when given, you know, use whatever resources you have
- 35:57Speaker 4: at your disposal, when given the opportunity to deliver excellence,
- 36:00Speaker 4: never quit. That's what he is, the last line of
- 36:02Speaker 4: rebel without a crew, of Robert's book, And that's what
- 36:05Speaker 4: is what we're all striving to do. And it's working.
- 36:10Speaker 4: It's working in a way that is not only commercially viable,
- 36:14Speaker 4: but is some of the best creative on on screen.
- 36:18Speaker 4: In the Last of Us. You have myself, you have Bedrol,
- 36:20Speaker 4: you have you have Isabella, you have Adiella bar you
- 36:25Speaker 4: have Danny Ramirez. You have all these people, and it's
- 36:27Speaker 4: one of the big shows, if not the biggest show
- 36:29Speaker 4: on the planet at right time, at this present moment.
- 36:34Speaker 4: The you have Diego and in and Or and and
- 36:40Speaker 4: and everyone in that show. You have Asa doing what
- 36:43Speaker 4: she's doing, and you have everybody now in this position
- 36:47Speaker 4: to where it is. It's just it's natural and and
- 36:52Speaker 4: that's that's just a great place to be, especially in
- 36:55Speaker 4: this moment where our culture is trying to another attempt,
- 36:59Speaker 4: another way that they're never going to They can never
- 37:02Speaker 4: snuff us out, no matter how hard they try and
- 37:04Speaker 4: how hard they try to otherise us or or remove
- 37:07Speaker 4: us from the equation. It's it's we're only growing not
- 37:11Speaker 4: only in populace, but also in uh in spirit and
- 37:16Speaker 4: exposure and in proof of our ability and our and
- 37:23Speaker 4: our success, the magnitude of the culture. It's just it's
- 37:28Speaker 4: just too too forceful, too loud, too vibrant to be
- 37:32Speaker 4: snuffed out.
- 37:42Speaker 3: To talk about this bionary moments. I mean bringing full
- 37:45Speaker 3: circle to the Shield, you know, you know, the Ghostwriter.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Yeah, when that happened.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Twenty fifteen, that was the first Mexican American superhero especial
- 37:56Speaker 4: certainly of one of the bigger.
- 37:59Speaker 2: I mean Tempole care titles.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Yes, of course, and like one of the first times
- 38:03Speaker 3: that character is going to be brought to life for
- 38:05Speaker 3: this next generation. You know, I think that, you know,
- 38:08Speaker 3: I think obviously Nicholas Case had his quick run with that,
- 38:12Speaker 3: you know, with that movie, but this was the most
- 38:16Speaker 3: the most relevant rendition of that character. I wouldn't be
- 38:21Speaker 3: surprised if you were brought to Doomsday at some point.
- 38:23Speaker 3: But we're not gonna we're not gonna talk about that
- 38:25Speaker 3: right now.
- 38:25Speaker 4: They might have ran out of chairs.
- 38:27Speaker 2: But but you know what, you.
- 38:30Speaker 4: Could put duct type on somebody else's chair who's already wrapped.
- 38:32Speaker 2: That's right, That's what I'm saying that. But it's gonna
- 38:35Speaker 2: die in the first ten minutes of that movie.
- 38:37Speaker 3: But but but I think to the point is is
- 38:40Speaker 3: that I remember when you were announced as a Ghostwriter, was.
- 38:43Speaker 2: Like, oh my god, there goes the neighborhood. It's like unstoppable.
- 38:48Speaker 3: It's like it was a really, really iconic moment because
- 38:53Speaker 3: the comic book world was like, finally we're gonna see this,
- 38:57Speaker 3: this character come to life and it.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Was a Latino bro.
- 38:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it was so bad.
- 39:01Speaker 3: I asked the way that and you came in and
- 39:03Speaker 3: you brought somethings so like, so not just that for
- 39:06Speaker 3: a list, but so necessary to that character. And that
- 39:09Speaker 3: was to me, that was the most exciting season in
- 39:12Speaker 3: the Shield legacy period.
- 39:14Speaker 4: It was a it was a shift. It was a
- 39:17Speaker 4: shift in the the trajectory of that show. That was
- 39:20Speaker 4: the maiden voyage of Marvel in television. Agent's Shield was
- 39:25Speaker 4: when it first started. Samuel Jackson, Colby, other other characters
- 39:31Speaker 4: who were in the movies were on the show, but
- 39:35Speaker 4: it had started to kind of slide and they didn't
- 39:37Speaker 4: know if they were going to get another season. I
- 39:39Speaker 4: remember they had moved the show to Tuesday nights, the
- 39:41Speaker 4: death Nail slot, Tuesday at nine, and they didn't know
- 39:46Speaker 4: if it was going to continue, and then I guess,
- 39:51Speaker 4: it's twofold. It's the it's it was the the addition
- 39:54Speaker 4: of the ghost writer character. Well, first of all, it
- 39:57Speaker 4: was the restructuring of the season to where it was
- 40:00Speaker 4: three different pods, where there were nine to ten episodes
- 40:03Speaker 4: of a twenty two episode season eight nine ten, three
- 40:07Speaker 4: different kind of stories that all intersect at the end,
- 40:09Speaker 4: and that first nine episodes was the ghostwriter segment of it.
- 40:16Speaker 4: They started the season that way and for nine episodes.
- 40:19Speaker 4: All of a sudden, I was essentially the lead character
- 40:22Speaker 4: of this network action Marvel show that as a new
- 40:27Speaker 4: as a guest star, but the way that the character
- 40:29Speaker 4: was positioned, the history of that character, the popularity of
- 40:34Speaker 4: the character, even though the version I was playing was
- 40:37Speaker 4: only in existence for two years at the time. Created
- 40:39Speaker 4: by my friend Felippe Smith, who we became very close
- 40:41Speaker 4: to home. Oh cool, who's half Jamaican, half Argentine, and
- 40:46Speaker 4: he's a beautiful He was the first American to ever
- 40:49Speaker 4: be published in Japan doing manga, so he's a very
- 40:54Speaker 4: very special individual who's certainly kind of kicked down his
- 40:59Speaker 4: own doors. And with the Robbie Rays character, they told
- 41:03Speaker 4: him he can do what they could do whatever he
- 41:04Speaker 4: wanted with the character, and the first thing he did
- 41:06Speaker 4: was take him away from the bike put him in
- 41:08Speaker 4: a nineteen sixty nine Dods charger because he'd loved the
- 41:10Speaker 4: fast in the Furious movies and it's probably the coolest
- 41:12Speaker 4: silhouette of any muscle car that's ever existed with the
- 41:16Speaker 4: big BDS blower. It's a four to forty HEMI in
- 41:18Speaker 4: it with another beat with a BDS blower on it
- 41:20Speaker 4: that makes it basically a nine hundred horsepower car. And
- 41:23Speaker 4: it's He's like, you know, I just wanted to. I
- 41:26Speaker 4: wanted to kind of piss people off, you know, or
- 41:30Speaker 4: provoke them. Make him a Latin, know, make him a
- 41:32Speaker 4: Mexican American, have him live in in hill Rock Heights,
- 41:36Speaker 4: which is basically the marble version of a Lincoln Heights
- 41:39Speaker 4: or Bull Heights. Have him be be possessed. We changed
- 41:45Speaker 4: it a little bit in the show, but in comic books,
- 41:46Speaker 4: possessed by the his serial killer uncle's spirit, you know,
- 41:51Speaker 4: the Satanic spirit, and him fighting against that at all times,
- 41:54Speaker 4: and being this father figure to his brother who's who
- 41:59Speaker 4: was a paraplegic, and all of these really cool elements
- 42:02Speaker 4: of the story that were not what the Ghostwriter character
- 42:06Speaker 4: was previously. Who was Johnny Blaze, the former stunt man
- 42:09Speaker 4: who who's so cursed. He's like, oh, this is a curse.
- 42:12Speaker 4: I hate this. I hate being the Ghostwriter. But for Robbie.
- 42:15Speaker 4: His life was already cursed. His parents were gone, he
- 42:18Speaker 4: was cursed by this spirit, his brothers in a wheelchair.
- 42:20Speaker 4: He's been thrust into this position of being this father
- 42:25Speaker 4: figure before his time, and the ghostwriter makes him powerful.
- 42:30Speaker 4: So it was this kind of different angle into that character,
- 42:34Speaker 4: and so we do it, and it's the It was
- 42:40Speaker 4: immediately received, well not immediately, because before anyone saw it,
- 42:46Speaker 4: everyone hated the idea. I remember a lot of people
- 42:48Speaker 4: hated the idea that there was a Mexican American ghostwriter.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Like everything, pretty much everything I've done, Terminator, the last
- 42:55Speaker 4: of us playing Tommy Miller's why is this guy doing it?
- 42:59Speaker 4: Until they see us do it?
- 43:01Speaker 2: Well, see how until they see you do it?
- 43:03Speaker 3: Let me just give you a little credit on that,
- 43:05Speaker 3: because because one thing is bringing a character and saying, hey,
- 43:08Speaker 3: we're gonna make them Latino, although in those storylines they
- 43:11Speaker 3: were intentionally developed to be a Latino character, which, by
- 43:14Speaker 3: the way, it's why also it works. But then you
- 43:18Speaker 3: need someone to drive that grounded and bring it to
- 43:21Speaker 3: the masses in a way that not only makes sense,
- 43:23Speaker 3: but he lifted and he sores and it and it's free.
- 43:26Speaker 3: So like you brought something so unique to that that
- 43:29Speaker 3: they're like, undeniably they bought that new ghostwriter.
- 43:32Speaker 2: You know, that's just ky Woes.
- 43:33Speaker 4: And it was just incredible from start to finish. I
- 43:37Speaker 4: remember when I got the job. They I was at
- 43:40Speaker 4: mar I was in Marfa, Texas at a at a
- 43:43Speaker 4: film festival for a picture I did, trans Pacos. What
- 43:45Speaker 4: I did with another friend of ourtis Clifty Cliffy Cliffy
- 43:48Speaker 4: Collins Junior, Clifton Collins Junior, myself were in this picture
- 43:51Speaker 4: that great Quator directed, who he and his writing partner
- 43:55Speaker 4: Clint Bentley were just nominated for an Oscar for Sing
- 43:57Speaker 4: Sing for his follow up feature, his second one. His
- 44:01Speaker 4: first one was Transpatos, which I was a leader and
- 44:04Speaker 4: the uh. And I was there in Marfa at a
- 44:07Speaker 4: film vessel for this movie and then my team calls me,
- 44:11Speaker 4: uh and they're like, you know that part on Asian
- 44:15Speaker 4: Shield you kept turning down and I was like yeah,
- 44:17Speaker 4: because they had told me there was this part on
- 44:19Speaker 4: Asia Shield. There was a guest star role. And this
- 44:21Speaker 4: is right when the Marvel thing was heating up, and
- 44:23Speaker 4: I was like, you know, I don't want to get
- 44:25Speaker 4: cast in a guest star role as a as maybe
- 44:27Speaker 4: an agent or something else. And then I'm just off
- 44:29Speaker 4: the board for everything else, and so I just kept
- 44:32Speaker 4: saying no. And then finally they're like, you know what,
- 44:34Speaker 4: you should probably go on the internet and look up
- 44:36Speaker 4: what's happening at at comic Con in a couple of weeks,
- 44:40Speaker 4: and I went on or in the following week, i
- 44:42Speaker 4: should say, and everyone is speculating about there's going to
- 44:46Speaker 4: be a ghost Rider in Agents of Shield because there
- 44:48Speaker 4: was all these buses that were wrapped at San Diego
- 44:51Speaker 4: Comic Con with these flaming chain and uh. And I
- 44:54Speaker 4: look it up and sure enough, the latest iteration of
- 44:57Speaker 4: the ghost rider was Robbie Rays, Mexican American from hill
- 45:00Speaker 4: Rock Heights in LA. And that they told me that
- 45:04Speaker 4: this is kind of the that I should look into this,
- 45:06Speaker 4: and I was like, wait a second. Everything about this
- 45:09Speaker 4: dude is a line with me. You know. He you know,
- 45:13Speaker 4: my mom was a fifteen year old widow when she
- 45:15Speaker 4: had me, and she's more so almost like a sibling
- 45:17Speaker 4: now in these days. I'm forty two, she's fifty seven,
- 45:20Speaker 4: and the uh and even even you know, I'd say
- 45:23Speaker 4: to the point where now I'm kind of the paternal
- 45:25Speaker 4: figure for the family. Yeah, take care of her, to
- 45:27Speaker 4: care everybody, my siblings, my grandma and uh and I.
- 45:32Speaker 4: But in this thing, he's this orphaned person who takes
- 45:34Speaker 4: care of his family, takes care of his brother whose
- 45:36Speaker 4: name is Gabriel, and and I'm just like, wow, this
- 45:40Speaker 4: is amazing. I didn't even know this guy existed. And
- 45:43Speaker 4: then they're like, well, they're gonna, you know, Jeff Lobe
- 45:45Speaker 4: and Jed Whedon and mow Tantroon Whedon, they're gonna call
- 45:49Speaker 4: you and set up this thing. And so I'm sitting
- 45:51Speaker 4: there trying to get internet and Marfa because it's really
- 45:53Speaker 4: you know, it's in the desert and all the internet
- 45:54Speaker 4: super spotty. I'm literally sitting in this house that I rented.
- 45:59Speaker 4: I can see we's going down the road. It's like
- 46:01Speaker 4: a one road kind of town. Finally get them on
- 46:04Speaker 4: and they they you know, they're they're like, hey, uh,
- 46:08Speaker 4: you should you know? Do you know anything about this character?
- 46:10Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, I think I know. I was
- 46:12Speaker 4: trying to pretend that I didn't know. And they're like, well,
- 46:15Speaker 4: we'd love you to put down this one scene for us,
- 46:17Speaker 4: and if you could do that, maybe tomorrow tomorrow or
- 46:19Speaker 4: today or whatever. We'd love that and say no problem.
- 46:21Speaker 4: So I went to my my uh my screening just
- 46:25Speaker 4: buzzing because I was like, Wow, this is wild. And
- 46:28Speaker 4: then uh then the next day I I I rented
- 46:30Speaker 4: a room at the Thunderbird Hotel so that I could
- 46:32Speaker 4: because I wasn't gonna stay. I was gonna leave. The
- 46:34Speaker 4: following day. I was like, you know, I'll stay one
- 46:35Speaker 4: more day, get this tape put in, so i'd go up.
- 46:38Speaker 4: My friend Nick helps me. You're stand in, who's there
- 46:41Speaker 4: in Marfa visiting a friend of our? Uh But unbeknown
- 46:46Speaker 4: to me, they were having a day rave down at
- 46:48Speaker 4: the pool. So at my tame So in my tape
- 46:51Speaker 4: all you hear in the background is which is actually
- 46:54Speaker 4: kind of perfect because in my mind Robbie Ray has
- 46:56Speaker 4: kind of listens to this really cool kind of d
- 46:58Speaker 4: M kind of stuff. But I do the scene. I
- 47:01Speaker 4: sent it in. They called me the following day, they're
- 47:04Speaker 4: how fast can you get back to lam Well, I'm
- 47:06Speaker 4: coming in today. Flew in, went home, got dressed, went
- 47:09Speaker 4: to go meet them. Sarah Finn was casting, met the
- 47:15Speaker 4: entire production team, met their kids like and this was
- 47:19Speaker 4: the first sense of the family that they were, and
- 47:22Speaker 4: then then the kind of the kind of thesis statement
- 47:26Speaker 4: that they have, which is really they create this family
- 47:28Speaker 4: culture and they were really great at that, and that's
- 47:30Speaker 4: why the show was as wonderful as it was, and
- 47:32Speaker 4: the fan base feels very much a part of the family.
- 47:36Speaker 4: And and I went that was a Sunday. They called
- 47:40Speaker 4: me the next day to tell me that I got cast.
- 47:43Speaker 4: I was on set that Friday. So in seven days
- 47:47Speaker 4: I went from just not knowing what was gonna you know,
- 47:51Speaker 4: just I mean, you know, I'm just doing my thing.
- 47:53Speaker 4: I was at this film festival to being on set
- 47:56Speaker 4: as the Ghostwriter. As it's being announced at sandie O
- 48:00Speaker 4: Comic Con. Everybody Clark, Gregg, Chloe Bent, everybody Clark was.
- 48:03Speaker 4: They were all in San Diego on that Friday doing
- 48:07Speaker 4: the big hall Ah product presentation, unveiling the fact that
- 48:10Speaker 4: there was gonna be the ghost Rider. And I am
- 48:12Speaker 4: on set squashing a Nazi with my car and uh,
- 48:18Speaker 4: having that.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Time the time of my life.
- 48:21Speaker 4: And from one moment to the next, I go back
- 48:24Speaker 4: to my charity, look at my phone, and all of
- 48:26Speaker 4: a suddenly, every every person I've known for the last
- 48:28Speaker 4: you know, in my entire life. It just texted me
- 48:31Speaker 4: that this that they had announced that I was playing
- 48:33Speaker 4: this character, and uh, and that was a huge shift.
- 48:37Speaker 4: I mean it changed a lot in that moment. I mean,
- 48:39Speaker 4: Mattador was was certainly big in my life. And then
- 48:41Speaker 4: as far as just people around the world knowing who
- 48:44Speaker 4: I was, this was kind of the moment. This was
- 48:48Speaker 4: the threshold that I walked through. And uh, and then
- 48:51Speaker 4: we had Then all his left was make the show
- 48:54Speaker 4: and and we we made it. I got to work
- 48:56Speaker 4: with incredible people. We shot in l A. So the
- 49:00Speaker 4: first dude, the first I was so liked. For the
- 49:04Speaker 4: first five six years after Matador, everything was in LA.
- 49:08Speaker 4: I did that. I did Wikes City for ABC. I
- 49:11Speaker 4: did a True Detective here in LA. I did all
- 49:13Speaker 4: these and I thought, well, this is what's supposed to
- 49:16Speaker 4: be right naturally, this is what's supposed to happen. That's
- 49:19Speaker 4: why we move here. And everybody's like, no, bro, you're lucky.
- 49:21Speaker 4: At one point I did a picture called Gravy where
- 49:23Speaker 4: I walked from my apartment in Hollywood to Siren Studios
- 49:27Speaker 4: every day with my guitar in my hand, my other guitar.
- 49:30Speaker 4: This is before Robert baby, this before that, and then
- 49:33Speaker 4: oh no, this was this was I did have this
- 49:35Speaker 4: by then, and uh I got to walk to work.
- 49:38Speaker 4: It's crazy. And now, of course the world has shifted
- 49:43Speaker 4: and they're so you know, every opportunity to get we
- 49:46Speaker 4: have to try to bring work back here because there
- 49:48Speaker 4: is legacy talent in this town. In every department there are.
- 49:51Speaker 4: There are families of grips, There are families of families
- 49:56Speaker 4: of makeup artists, and and they have families that are
- 50:00Speaker 4: been here for decades that you can't just up and
- 50:02Speaker 4: move around, you know. They we need to bring it
- 50:03Speaker 4: all back. Speaking of family legacy families. Eric Norris was
- 50:09Speaker 4: one of my stunt drivers along with Eddie Brown, incredible stuntman,
- 50:12Speaker 4: stunt driver for for uh. And they taught me all
- 50:16Speaker 4: kinds of stuff they probably weren't supposed to teach me,
- 50:19Speaker 4: but you know it's kind of like, what do you
- 50:21Speaker 4: mean in terms of just just precision driving kind of things. Yeah,
- 50:25Speaker 4: and uh, it's kind of an ass, you know. Now
- 50:28Speaker 4: you guys know ABC, I don't know as forgive me.
- 50:31Speaker 2: It worked out.
- 50:32Speaker 4: There's still a lot. But Eric was Chuck Norris's son,
- 50:37Speaker 4: and he is Chuck Norris's son. He's an incredible stunt driver. Yeah,
- 50:40Speaker 4: and uh he he uh. He was really fun to
- 50:44Speaker 4: hang out with. And that's another legacy family there in
- 50:47Speaker 4: our business. And I used to tell him Chuck Norris
- 50:49Speaker 4: jokes in the seconder in the second person, so I'd
- 50:53Speaker 4: be like, you know, Eric, your daddy once got bit
- 50:56Speaker 4: by rattlesnake and after seven days of excruciator in pain,
- 51:00Speaker 4: the rattlesnake finally died.
- 51:03Speaker 2: You know, this is Chuck Norris his house.
- 51:06Speaker 4: This was Chuck.
- 51:07Speaker 2: So when I was so, Eric grew this house.
- 51:10Speaker 4: Yes, yes, this is what I'm saying. You gotta tell
- 51:12Speaker 4: them everything happens exactly. It's just intended to. It's crazy that.
- 51:18Speaker 3: You had those things like really like geeking now moments
- 51:22Speaker 3: like when when you because first of all, you were
- 51:25Speaker 3: also a terminator.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Let's suppose we talk about that for a second.
- 51:28Speaker 3: But the moment when you're like you show up and
- 51:31Speaker 3: you're like, okay, here is you know, ghost Rider's outfit.
- 51:34Speaker 2: And you're like, damn the jacket, you know, or you
- 51:37Speaker 2: show up to.
- 51:38Speaker 3: A terminator you're like, there it is the you know,
- 51:41Speaker 3: the the you know, the the chrome's called you know.
- 51:44Speaker 4: I always say man like when when, especially with things
- 51:47Speaker 4: like that, they're so iconic, Like with the with the
- 51:49Speaker 4: ghost Rider, I had the horseshoe kind of insignia on
- 51:51Speaker 4: the jacket, which was kind of the original design, the
- 51:55Speaker 4: Gary Friederich design from the nineteen seventies comics that flipa
- 52:00Speaker 4: rolled into Robbie's character. But I remember when I put
- 52:03Speaker 4: that jacket on, it was like or when I put
- 52:06Speaker 4: the the the the Air Force jumpsuit when I was
- 52:10Speaker 4: playing the Terminator. You know, it's like there's moments where
- 52:13Speaker 4: the character just snaps into your spine through the costume,
- 52:16Speaker 4: you know, and and there's just these Yeah, the Terminator
- 52:21Speaker 4: thing was another thing where it's it was kind of
- 52:25Speaker 4: it was kind of forecast ahead of time because I
- 52:27Speaker 4: remember doing the ghost Rider in the in the Charger,
- 52:31Speaker 4: which made me think of Robert h in his Dodge
- 52:35Speaker 4: Challenger when he was directing us. I was like, this
- 52:37Speaker 4: is this is so crazy. And then I'm in there
- 52:39Speaker 4: racing down the La River going just ridiculously fast and
- 52:46Speaker 4: because this car was very powerful, and then I was
- 52:49Speaker 4: and then I hear on the walkie They're like, oh man,
- 52:52Speaker 4: this is like grease. It's like grease Lightnings, and I
- 52:55Speaker 4: was like, I get on the walking. I'm like, you know, yeah,
- 52:58Speaker 4: it is kind of like grease, but I'm getting more
- 53:00Speaker 4: Terminator vibes, which is, of course the famous scene where
- 53:04Speaker 4: Robert Patrick and the eighteen wheelers chasing Arnold and Edward
- 53:09Speaker 4: is John Connor down the La River. Yeah. I remember
- 53:15Speaker 4: telling Robert which you mad at or we were on
- 53:17Speaker 4: the First Street Bridge, which is in the First Terminator
- 53:20Speaker 4: where you first see the stop motion endoskeleton of the
- 53:23Speaker 4: terminator after the eighteen wheeler explodes and it emerges and
- 53:27Speaker 4: all the skin is burned off. That was on the
- 53:29Speaker 4: First Street Bridge in La And I remember thinking of
- 53:32Speaker 4: that when I was shooting that. I had to see
- 53:34Speaker 4: him with James Kallis from Battlestar Galactor. We're both on
- 53:36Speaker 4: this thing, and it's just kind of wild that it
- 53:41Speaker 4: all developed that way, because sure enough I would be
- 53:46Speaker 4: Jim Cameron and Tim Miller cast me as a terminator
- 53:48Speaker 4: in twenty eighteen and we went shot the film.
- 53:50Speaker 1: You're telling so many great stories.
- 53:52Speaker 5: We're just going to take a slight pause and we're
- 53:54Speaker 5: going to continue on the next episode.
