- 0:02Good morning. We missed you.
- 0:08Thank you very much. I hate to interrupt all the
- 0:12conversations, but we've got a long ways to go and a short time
- 0:15to get there. Are you going to?
- 0:20Get. There.
- 0:21No, we're not going to get there.
- 0:26So Brent, I did learn something this quarter.
- 0:30I have to be far more careful when saying yes to which
- 0:33quarters I'm going to teach because this 12 week thing just
- 0:37doesn't cut it. All right, we are in Hebrews
- 0:43chapter 10 this morning. We're going to be picking up in
- 0:47verse 32. This will be my last Sunday
- 0:50teaching. Since this is the last Sunday of
- 0:53the quarter, obviously we had plans to get through the entire
- 0:56month or the entire book of Hebrews, but some things this
- 1:00month that happened that you have no way of being able to
- 1:03forecast kind of derailed the possibility of doing that.
- 1:06I do want to say thank you very quickly to Tom and to Benjamin
- 1:11for filling in for me the last two Sundays.
- 1:14I really appreciate you doing that and I'm sure you had good
- 1:18studies with them while I was away.
- 1:23We are going to be endeavoring to get through Chapter 11.
- 1:26I'm hopeful to get into a little bit of chapter 12 this morning.
- 1:30That will be as far as we get. I do also plan though to many of
- 1:36you have been utilizing the recordings that have been posted
- 1:39up on the the the Church podcast page to go back and re listen to
- 1:45them or to pass them along to others.
- 1:47So I do plan to make recordings for chapters 12 and 13 to finish
- 1:52out the study that can go up there on the platform so that
- 1:56you do get the remainder of the information.
- 1:59But unfortunately we won't be able to do that in this class
- 2:03next week. I have been told that Dwayne is
- 2:05going to be teaching something. I'm not sure what the topic is
- 2:09yet, so I will let him tell you what that is, but he will be
- 2:14taking over in here next Sunday and I'm personally looking
- 2:18forward to that. Chapter 10, you have the
- 2:25discussion that is ongoing here going back into Chapter 9 and in
- 2:29chapter 10 of what Jesus has done by means of his sacrifice.
- 2:35Yes, we've, we've mentioned 100 times.
- 2:38It's probably the last time it's mentioned in this particular
- 2:41sense in our class. We're talking to Jewish
- 2:45Christians. We're we're talking about those
- 2:49who come from a background of being Israelites.
- 2:52They are Christians. They do believe in Jesus.
- 2:55They have been questioning, they've been going through
- 2:57these, these struggles of whether Jesus is enough, whether
- 3:01or not they need to go back to or they should go back.
- 3:04They can go back under the old law, under the traditional
- 3:08Jewish law of Moses beliefs and practices because of the turmoil
- 3:16and the strife and all of the other things that they have
- 3:18endured while seeking to be Christians.
- 3:21Is it really worth it? Is it enough?
- 3:24And in chapters 9 and 10, the the writer of the book of
- 3:28Hebrews or the speaker who is giving this particular message
- 3:33is imparting to them everything that they have that is so much
- 3:38better with Jesus that that the sacrifice is, is so much
- 3:42greater. That this covenant that was
- 3:43created by means of the blood of Christ is a new covenant.
- 3:48It is a greater covenant. It is a better covenant.
- 3:52But as we closed a couple of weeks ago in chapter 10, as you
- 3:55get to verse 19, in verses 19 through 31, there is this
- 4:00admonition that he is going to give about how important it is
- 4:05for them to hold fast their confidence, their faith firm to
- 4:10the end, to draw near to God with a true heart in full
- 4:15assurance of faith, verse 22, and hold fast the confession of
- 4:20our hope without wavering. Verse 23 Why?
- 4:27Because when we sin willfully verse 26 and then and this sin
- 4:33isn't just, hey, I did the wrong thing.
- 4:35I made the wrong decision and yes, I even knew it when I when
- 4:39I did it in the context, he's talking about walking away from
- 4:43God. He's talking about quitting on
- 4:45Jesus and giving up your Christianity.
- 4:49He says if we sin willfully after we have received the
- 4:52knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains A sacrifice for
- 4:57sin. And then he follows it up by
- 5:00making the comparison between what what the judgment would
- 5:04have been under the law of Moses that they've been contemplating
- 5:08trying to go back to. And then he says, of how much
- 5:12worse punishment, Verse 29 do you suppose he will be thought
- 5:16worthy, who has trampled the Son of God under foot, counted the
- 5:21blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, a common
- 5:24thing, and insulted the spirit of grace.
- 5:29For we know him who said, Vengeance is mine.
- 5:32I will repay, says the Lord, and again the Lord will judge his
- 5:37people. It is a fearful thing to fall
- 5:41into the hands of the living God.
- 5:47And that's where we stopped a couple weeks ago.
- 5:51That phrase, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of
- 5:55the living God is, is that that final shot across the bow for
- 6:02these Christians? You're worried about what
- 6:07everybody else is going to think of you, what everybody else is
- 6:09doing to you, what everybody else is going to say about you.
- 6:12You should be worried about what God thinks of you and what God
- 6:19says about you. And so as you come here into
- 6:23verse 32, now we're going to have another transition because
- 6:29it's going to go from this statement and and this bringing
- 6:33in of, of the judgment of God upon those who quit, those that
- 6:37give up, those who turn away from his will.
- 6:42And it's going to move to what they can do, what they can be
- 6:47this, this positive note that they've not yet quit, they've
- 6:53not yet given up and they've got to see it through to the end.
- 6:59Notice the way he transitions because verses 25 and 26
- 7:04especially, but down through verse 31 are a sharp reality
- 7:09check to these individuals as they're seeing and hearing and
- 7:13being reminded of who God is and what God does.
- 7:18But then you come to verse 32, and he says, But recall the
- 7:24former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a
- 7:30great struggle with sufferings, partly while you were made a
- 7:34spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while
- 7:37you became companions of those who were so treated.
- 7:41For you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted
- 7:46the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better
- 7:50and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven.
- 7:54Therefore do not castaway your confidence, which has great
- 7:58reward, for you have need of endurance, so that after you
- 8:02have done the will of God, you may receive the promise for yet
- 8:06a little while, and he who is coming will come and will not
- 8:10tarry. Now the just shall live by
- 8:12faith. But if anyone draws back, my
- 8:15soul has no pleasure in Him. But we are not of those who draw
- 8:19back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the
- 8:23soul. Usually when we study Hebrews
- 8:28Chapter 11, we do it in a vacuum.
- 8:31We call it the hall of faith. We treat it as though it is the
- 8:36righteous man's Hall of Fame. That's not what this is.
- 8:41I, I have no problems with calling it the hall of faith
- 8:44because there are many very faithful individuals that are
- 8:47discussed in Hebrews Chapter 11. And we're going to look at them
- 8:51sort of in just a few moments. But the entire purpose of what's
- 8:57being done in Hebrews Chapter 11 is to illustrate and to remind
- 9:05these Christians of what it means to see it through to the
- 9:09end, to not quit, to not give up, to not be ones who are going
- 9:16to turn back away from God. But notice how he introduces
- 9:23what he's going to talk about in Hebrews Chapter 11.
- 9:26He says beginning in verse 232. I want to remind you of the
- 9:32former days in which you were illuminated.
- 9:36The idea of illuminated is when you first became Christians.
- 9:40Many of these individuals have been Christians for a while.
- 9:44They're not new converts. They're they're not ones that
- 9:47have just started their journey with Christ and, and they're
- 9:50just trying to decide whether or not they really believe that
- 9:54these things are true or that these things have actually
- 9:57happened. I want you to notice what he
- 9:59says. He says, remember the former
- 10:01days in which, after you were eliminated, you endured a great
- 10:05struggle with sufferings, partly while you were made a spectacle
- 10:09both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while
- 10:13you became companions of those who were so treated.
- 10:17Has life been easy for these Jewish Christians?
- 10:22No. I think the reality is, if we're
- 10:28truly being honest with ourselves, the majority of us
- 10:32have never really experienced the kind of struggles, the kind
- 10:37of backlash, the kind of hardship, the kind of issues
- 10:43that these Jewish Christians have dealt with striving to be
- 10:47faithful to Christ. It has shaken every facet of
- 10:52their world. They have been mistreated.
- 10:56They have dealt with reproaches and tribulations.
- 10:59They have stood side by side with people who have lost their
- 11:04lives in the service of Christ. They've had their property taken
- 11:09from them. They've lost friends, they've
- 11:12lost family members. They have people who won't talk
- 11:17to them, people that won't associate with them, people that
- 11:19don't want anything to do with them, all because they are
- 11:25seeking to serve Jesus. And this wasn't one time.
- 11:30This was not just for a moment. This has been a continuous
- 11:35source of struggle. Now when you turn over to
- 11:41chapter 12, where we're not going to have time to delve in
- 11:46in in detail, he does make the statement over in chapter 12,
- 11:50verse four. He says you have not yet
- 11:52resisted to bloodshed striving against sin.
- 11:59So it not hasn't yet come to the point for them that it has
- 12:03required loss of life in in for them personally or or bloodshed
- 12:10from the standpoint of the things that others have endured.
- 12:15But just because they haven't been brutally murdered doesn't
- 12:23mean that they have not faced real struggle and that they have
- 12:28not faced hardship and that they have not had to deal with the
- 12:32mental and the the emotional strain of what it means in order
- 12:38to serve Christ. But he says, whoever the author
- 12:47is, you had compassion on me in my chains and joyfully accepted
- 12:53the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better
- 12:58and an enduring possession for yourselves and haven't noticed
- 13:01this is what you knew. You knew you were taking this
- 13:05on. You knew that you were agreeing
- 13:07to this. So what you need is not the
- 13:14basic principle of faith. You already have that.
- 13:20You need endurance. You need the courage and the
- 13:25conviction to see it through to the end.
- 13:30That's what you're missing in all of this.
- 13:34So what he's going to do beginning in Chapter 11 is he is
- 13:39going to give them a series of examples and a series of
- 13:43reminders illustrating to them why it is so important, but also
- 13:50that this is not something new that God is asking of them.
- 13:58This is something that has been illustrated in the life of the
- 14:02faithful going all the way back to the beginning.
- 14:07But notice the statement before we delve into Chapter 11 from
- 14:10verse 39. He says, and I love the
- 14:16phraseology here because the positivity that he injects into
- 14:23this statement has the ability to become contagious.
- 14:29He's told them what the struggles are.
- 14:31He's told them and he's laid out the evidences for why they need
- 14:35to think about this differently than they have been in the midst
- 14:38of these struggles. And then he's given them the
- 14:41warnings. But then he says in verse 39,
- 14:44but we are not those who draw back to perdition, but of those
- 14:53who believe to the saving of the soul.
- 14:58Notice he doesn't say I'm not one of those.
- 15:03He says we. What has he done in making that
- 15:09a plural statement that includes everyone?
- 15:16He's showing his confidence in. Them, that's exactly right.
- 15:19He is relaying to them the confidence that not only can
- 15:25they, but they will remain faithful.
- 15:31They will gain the courage that is necessary to hold fast to
- 15:38their faith. But now he says, let me remind
- 15:45you of what that faith is capable of.
- 15:50What we're going to do as we study through Chapter 11 this
- 15:53morning is we spend most of our time and I had a couple of
- 15:56slides, but they've they've gone by the wayside, it looks like
- 16:00this morning. And that's fine.
- 16:03But when we go through Chapter 11, what do we spend most of our
- 16:05time talking about faithful. All right, the individuals that
- 16:10are mentioned, they're mentioned for a reason.
- 16:14We're going to go the opposite direction today.
- 16:17What I want to do as we go through Chapter 11 is instead of
- 16:20spending our focus on the individuals, I want to show you
- 16:23the discussion that's happening in the midst of the listing of
- 16:26the individuals. And then in our own time, we can
- 16:31go through and do those deep dive studies into those
- 16:34individuals of faith. Because I want you to see the
- 16:37thread running from chapter 10, verses 32 through 39 through to
- 16:43chapter 12, verses 1 and 2, because that's actually the the
- 16:47shift in the discussion. Again, I want you to see the
- 16:51thread of the the argument that he's making, the point that he's
- 16:55making in trying to buck up their courage to say strong.
- 17:01It begins in verse one. Now faith is the substance of
- 17:05things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, For by it
- 17:09the elders obtained a good testimony.
- 17:13By faith we understand that the world's were framed by the word
- 17:17of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things
- 17:21which are visible. In these first 3 verses you have
- 17:26this reminder of faith. Now I'm going to dive into
- 17:31semantics for just a moment. Often times Hebrews 11/1 gets
- 17:36described as the definition of faith.
- 17:40I don't believe this is the definition of faith.
- 17:44Faith is just is listed here as the substance of things hoped
- 17:48for, the evidence of things not seen.
- 17:50This is the description of faith.
- 17:52This is the purpose of faith. It is that substance.
- 17:56It is the foundation other translations will put it.
- 18:00It is the foundation of the things that are hoped for, and
- 18:06it is built on the evidence, the assurance of things not seen.
- 18:13This is the description of how faith operates, what its
- 18:16function is. The definition of faith is verse
- 18:226. But without faith it is
- 18:25impossible to please him, for he that comes to God must believe
- 18:30that He is, and that he's a rewarder of those who diligently
- 18:35seek Him. Verse one is the description of
- 18:38the place that faith holds for us.
- 18:40Verse 6 is the definition of what you have to have in order
- 18:44for there to be faith. You have to believe in God, yes,
- 18:51but believing in God, in and of itself, is not sufficient for
- 18:54faith. Faith requires the
- 18:57understanding, the recognition, and the acceptance of the fact
- 19:01that God is only going to reward those who diligently seek Him.
- 19:09Well, why is that important in this discussion?
- 19:14Because they're having to decide whether or not they're going to
- 19:17continue diligently seeking after Christ.
- 19:25You go back into verses, verse two and three.
- 19:28He says for by it, that is by faith.
- 19:31The elders, the term here for elders.
- 19:34He's not talking about elders in the church.
- 19:36The term here is, is the term for ancestors, those of old,
- 19:40those of days gone by. By it, those of the past
- 19:44obtained a good testimony. Faith was the indicator of their
- 19:51relationship with God. Why?
- 19:53Because faith doesn't wasn't just about whether they believed
- 19:56in God, it was about whether or not they were willing to do what
- 20:00God said. By faith we understand that the
- 20:05world's were framed by the word of God, so that the things which
- 20:09are seen were not made of things which are visible.
- 20:13Now, based on some of our previous discussions in the book
- 20:16of Hebrews and going back to John 1 and various other things,
- 20:20I want to point out one other layer in this.
- 20:23You might have the inclination to try to make the statement in
- 20:26verse three that the world's being framed by the Word of God,
- 20:29that this is another allusion to Jesus as the Creator.
- 20:34It's actually not because of the terminology that is used in John
- 20:38chapter one, verse one and as we talked about in Hebrews chapter
- 20:424, the term is the Logos of God and it carries with it the idea
- 20:49of the word or the the divine word as it's sometimes called it
- 20:58is it is more singular in nature.
- 21:03Here in verse 3, the word is prima and it is the word that
- 21:08means a declaration or the word that is spoken.
- 21:14And and so it is definitely the case that our Lord is the one
- 21:18who created everything by the word of His mouth.
- 21:22But here in verse 3, the emphasis is the declaration
- 21:26itself. In other words, by speaking it
- 21:28into existence as it were. And so by faith we understand
- 21:33that the world's were framed by the declaration of God is truly
- 21:38the sense of the the phrase so that the things which are seen
- 21:43were not made of things which are visible.
- 21:48This is not blind faith. This is faith-based on evidence,
- 21:53faith-based on the evidence of the world around us, faith-based
- 21:57on the evidence of the truth of the Scriptures.
- 22:02It is not blinded without purpose.
- 22:06Beginning in verse 4 and what you have up on the screen, and I
- 22:09appreciate whoever it was that was responsible for that.
- 22:12I wasn't paying attention to who was back there in the control
- 22:14room. Thank you, Brent.
- 22:19Beginning in verse 4, you're going to have this list of
- 22:22discussions, starting with Abel and going all the way down
- 22:26through most of the chapter. You're going to have this list
- 22:30of those who by faith, did all of these various things that
- 22:36illustrated the level of devotion that they had to God.
- 22:44We're not going to take the time to read each of these verses,
- 22:47but I wanted you to have the information.
- 22:49These are where these particular Old Testament characters are
- 22:53found in the Old Testament, the ones that are explicitly listed
- 22:58in this particular text. But I want you to notice the
- 23:03thread that's being used to tie it all together.
- 23:07So in verse three, he says by faith, we understand that the
- 23:10world's were framed by the word of God.
- 23:11So going all the way back to creation and then by faith, Abel
- 23:16offered to God a more excellent sacrifice, verse 4.
- 23:20By faith, Enoch verse 5 was taken away so that he did not
- 23:24see death, verse 6. But without faith it is
- 23:29impossible to please him, for he who comes to God must believe
- 23:33that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently
- 23:36seek him. It's interesting that this is
- 23:38placed between the discussions of Enoch and Noah in verses 5:00
- 23:43and 7:00. What value does that hold?
- 23:48Enoch is going to be the one who was not, for God took him at the
- 23:53age of 365 years old. But by the time you come to
- 24:00Noah's day, a time later, you have a time when nobody has
- 24:08faith in God, where it is so bad that God repented.
- 24:18God regretted that he had ever made man.
- 24:24But then you have by faith Noah being divinely warned.
- 24:31He didn't just believe in God, he was willing to do what God
- 24:34told him to do to the letter by faith, Abraham verse 8.
- 24:43And there's going to be a lot that is going to be said about
- 24:45Abraham by faith. Abraham, when he was called to
- 24:48go out to the place where he would receive an inheritance,
- 24:52and he went out, not knowing where he was going by faith he
- 24:55dwelt in the land of promise and in a foreign country, dwelling
- 24:58in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same
- 25:02promise. For he waited for the city which
- 25:05has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
- 25:12He waited for the promise. He waited for all of the things
- 25:21that God had promised him to come to fruition.
- 25:24Well, guess what? Did all of those things come in
- 25:26the days of Abraham? Did he live to see all of those
- 25:31things take place? Nope.
- 25:35But he waited for it. He looked for it.
- 25:38He acted toward it in every respect.
- 25:46That's what it means to be faithful.
- 25:50That's what God desires and what God is looking for and want you
- 25:56to keep verse 10 kind of in your back pocket when we come to the
- 25:59end of Chapter 11. Because He's going to pull this
- 26:02back out again of what it is that he waited for, what it is
- 26:06that he was looking for, as opposed to what these Christians
- 26:10in the 1st century now have at their disposal.
- 26:15By faith. Sarah verse 11 herself also
- 26:19received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when
- 26:23she was past the age, because she judged him faithful, who had
- 26:26promised therefore from one man. I love the terminology here.
- 26:30And him as good as dead. We're born as many as the stars
- 26:35of the sky in multitude, innumerable as the sand which is
- 26:38by the seashore. Of course, the phraseology here
- 26:42being reference to the fact that both of them were of an age
- 26:49where this was not the general practice any longer.
- 26:56But notice verse 13. He has gone through Abel, Enoch,
- 27:01Noah, Abraham, and Sarah for the first time.
- 27:05He's going to come back to Abraham in just a moment.
- 27:08But in verse 13 he says these all died in faith, not having
- 27:15received the promises, but having seen them afar off, were
- 27:22assured of them, embraced them, and confessed that they were
- 27:28strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
- 27:31For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a
- 27:36homeland, and truly, if they had called to mind that country from
- 27:41which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to
- 27:44return. But now they desire a better,
- 27:48that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to
- 27:52be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
- 28:03What's he emphasizing? All right, the reward of
- 28:12faithfulness. They had promises that were
- 28:16given to them. And you know what?
- 28:20They didn't receive the promises in their lifetime.
- 28:25It doesn't mean that the promises weren't given, and it
- 28:28doesn't mean that God didn't keep the promises that he made
- 28:31to them. As a matter of fact, both the
- 28:34the Old Testament history and many of the things in the book
- 28:36of Hebrews helped to illustrate He did keep the promises that he
- 28:40made to them. Jesus is the fulfillment, the
- 28:43culmination of all of the promises that God made to
- 28:46Abraham. He kept his promises, but they
- 28:52didn't live to see it. When you're talking to people
- 28:57that are struggling with their faith, what is one of the most
- 29:00important things to be able to get across to them?
- 29:06You may not see everything that God has prepared for the
- 29:13faithful in your life. Cliff, one of the.
- 29:22Blessings that we have today is we have the New Testament and we
- 29:28can read there how go back and better understand the promises
- 29:35God made to Abraham and others because we we've got God
- 29:40blessings now instead of, you know, 1000 years ago or well,
- 29:45more than that back to the old. And that's exactly what he's
- 29:49pointing out to them, right? These people were all faithful
- 29:54and they couldn't see the whole picture.
- 29:57They just knew what God had told them about their time and the
- 30:01things that were coming. And you know, we look back at
- 30:04the things of Scripture and we say why couldn't they see that?
- 30:12Well, you tell me how you're going to look at things living
- 30:1415102 thousand 2500 years before Jesus is ever born, much less
- 30:21before he dies on the cross, much less before there's ever a
- 30:27Kingdom of Israel to even talk about.
- 30:30Israel doesn't exist. But I know who God is and I know
- 30:42what God has always done, and I know what he asks of Maine.
- 30:51So that's what I'm going to do, Keith.
- 31:00We have a lot of the same issues that they had.
- 31:04Then what are we going to? What are we going to base
- 31:07ourselves on when we come across things in our lives that will
- 31:12challenge us to not state? Of course, I know Christians
- 31:19that have gotten into situations that have kept them from ever
- 31:23remarrying again. You talk to them and say, well,
- 31:30you, why don't you rocket? Because I have to pay jobs
- 31:37people have turned away from because where their employees
- 31:42are starting to go a certain direction, family members that
- 31:48are starting to do certain things and they have to turn
- 31:52away from the job. This stuff hasn't changed in
- 31:55thousands of years. It's the same by looking here,
- 32:01we see, we're able to see the 1st century attrition.
- 32:04That's one of our things. They saw the thousands of years
- 32:11ago, the first followers of God and what they have given you.
- 32:20We're very blessed. Well, in some ways we are very
- 32:23blessed. In other ways our challenges are
- 32:28just as deadly because we're not talking about physical, we're
- 32:32talking about Spirit. So we go back and we look at
- 32:36this and we where is your faith? Your faith is to do that.
- 32:42When you have a faith in something, it will help you to
- 32:46withstand the negative or the times in our lives.
- 32:49That is not the popular or the easy thing to do is to challenge
- 32:57things to do is he makes it very unpopular.
- 33:01People will look at it and say, oh you're and they can give you
- 33:05all time today. And I appreciate you bringing
- 33:08that up because this is exactly where he goes.
- 33:11Want you to notice verse 17 by faith.
- 33:14Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, Genesis
- 33:18chapter 22. By faith, Isaac blessed Jacob
- 33:22and Esau concerning things to come, verse 20, By faith.
- 33:26Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of
- 33:28Joseph and worshipped, leaning on the top of his staff.
- 33:32By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the
- 33:35departure of the children of Israel.
- 33:37By faith, Moses, when he was born and hidden three months by
- 33:40his parents, because he saw, they saw that he was a beautiful
- 33:43child, and they were afraid of the King's command.
- 33:46By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the
- 33:49son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather than to suffer
- 33:52affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the passing
- 33:55pleasures of sin. Verse 27.
- 33:57By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king.
- 34:01By verse 29. By or verse 28.
- 34:04By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood,
- 34:07lest he who destroyed the first born should touch them.
- 34:10Verse 29. By faith they passed through the
- 34:12Red Sea as by dry land. Verse 30.
- 34:15By faith the walls of Jericho fell down.
- 34:17Verse 31. By faith the harlot Rahab did
- 34:20not perish with those who did not believe, when she had
- 34:24received the spies with peace. And what more verse 32 shall I
- 34:29say, For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Bayrak and
- 34:34Samson and Jephthah and David and Samuel and the prophets who
- 34:38through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained
- 34:42promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of
- 34:46fire, escaped the edge of the sword out of weakness, were made
- 34:50strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the
- 34:54armies of the aliens. Women received their dead,
- 34:57raised to life again, but others were tortured, not accepting
- 35:01deliverance that they might obtain a better resurrection.
- 35:05Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes,
- 35:09and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn
- 35:13in two, they were tempted, were slain with the sword, They
- 35:17wandered about in sheepskins and goat skins, being destitute,
- 35:22afflicted, tormented, of which the world was not worthy, they
- 35:28wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of
- 35:32the earth. And all these, having obtained a
- 35:38good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise.
- 35:49You were talking about our trials, our tests, our
- 35:56hardships. You notice all of the ones he
- 36:00doesn't mention by name, but he mentions by what happened to
- 36:08them, what they went through, what they undertook in order to
- 36:14be faithful to God. And he says all these, having
- 36:18obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive
- 36:26the promise. How much faith does it take to
- 36:34be obedient to God when you can't see everything at the end?
- 36:43It takes this much faith lived out over and over and over
- 36:48again. But here's what I want you to
- 36:51see. It's the exact same amount of
- 36:54faith that it takes today. Because question, even with all
- 36:59of the things that the Bible says and all of the things that
- 37:03God illustrates for us in Scripture, have you seen heaven?
- 37:09You ever been there? You ever experienced what it's
- 37:13like on the other side of this life?
- 37:21Is there a sense in which you have not yet received the
- 37:23promises? So what are you going to do?
- 37:31These were faithful. These had not yet received the
- 37:37promises that God had made to them.
- 37:40Verse 40. God having provided something
- 37:43better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from
- 37:47us. In other words, the New
- 37:49Testament was necessary for the Old Covenant to be fulfilled.
- 37:53That's what he talked about back in chapter 10, is it not?
- 37:59Those things were made for us. Now, to this audience of Jewish
- 38:02Christians, how could you possibly try to go back to that?
- 38:12It's like trying to go back to before the promise was
- 38:15fulfilled, after it's already been brought to fruition.
- 38:25But he's not done yet. This is why you can't read
- 38:29Chapter 11 in a vacuum, because you missed the point that this
- 38:34is about their endurance. This is about seeing it through
- 38:37all the way to the end. Folks, this is not a list in
- 38:41Chapter 11 of all of the people who were so great that they need
- 38:46to go up on a pedestal that you can never attain.
- 38:52The entire purpose of Chapter 11 is this is the faith of the
- 38:56people that you read about that lived beforehand, and you can be
- 39:02just like them. God wants you to be just like
- 39:06them. God needs you to be just like
- 39:09them. And if you're going to have the
- 39:11faith that God needs you to have and wants you to have, you have
- 39:14to be just like them. David, I am.
- 39:18Thankful that their faults are listed in Genesis and in Exodus
- 39:25and such. Moses questioned God in a way I
- 39:30hope I never do like he did, but I'm just as bad.
- 39:36Abraham laughed. Several laughed at God.
- 39:44So I have hope when I'm weak and don't feel like I know God the
- 39:53way I should know God. I can look back and look at Lot
- 40:00lot willing to live with the Sodomites.
- 40:07And yet he is referred to not in Chapter 11 here, but he is
- 40:12referred to as a just man. Yeah, Peter will refer to him
- 40:16that way, that. I can go to heaven without being
- 40:20perfect, and I'm so thankful for that.
- 40:23Not all these people had problems.
- 40:28Some of them may not be listed as thoroughly as David's
- 40:33problems are listed, but I can know that a faulty, sinful man
- 40:43can be washed clean. Therefore, chapter 12.
- 40:56Therefore, because you need endurance, because you
- 41:03understand what faith is and what faith requires, because you
- 41:08remember your previous days, the things you've already endured
- 41:13and their previous lives and the things that they endured and the
- 41:17things that they were willing to go through.
- 41:20Therefore chapter 12, verse one, we also, since we are surrounded
- 41:26by so great a cloud of witnesses.
- 41:28What is this cloud of witnesses, everybody that he's just talked
- 41:33about in Hebrews Chapter 11. Therefore we also, since we are
- 41:39so rounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us, both the
- 41:50speaker and the audience, let us lay aside every weight and the
- 42:00sin which so easily besets us, and let us run with endurance
- 42:08the race that is set before us. You know, while we all run the
- 42:17same race, each of our races has different obstacles.
- 42:25The obstacles that you have to face may not be the obstacles
- 42:30that I have to face. The things that are a struggle,
- 42:34that, that are a roadblock, that are, that are a speed bump, or
- 42:38that may be a pit in the middle of the road for you, may not be
- 42:42the case for me. Our obstacles are all different.
- 42:48The race is the same. The only way we get to the end
- 42:54of the course is to finish the race.
- 43:01We have to run the race with endurance.
- 43:03Well, how do we do that? Verse 2 looking to Jesus, the
- 43:09author and finisher of our faith and notice the final nail in the
- 43:17discussion. He's talked about faith.
- 43:20He's talked about following it through to the end.
- 43:23Even when you don't have the promises, the way that you need
- 43:26endurance, you started out strong.
- 43:28You've got to see it through to the end.
- 43:30Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of of our faith,
- 43:34who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,
- 43:40despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the
- 43:44throne of God. What's your point?
- 43:46He finished. He didn't quit.
- 43:53We could have all kinds of discussions about what it was
- 43:58that Jesus was, was so sorrowful, was so anxious, was
- 44:04so upset about in the garden. I have my opinions.
- 44:07I know many others have their opinions about it, but what
- 44:13level of strength and commitment does it take to face whatever
- 44:19the emotional stress and trauma is that he's dealing with at
- 44:22this particular time and to still see it through to the end?
- 44:27To not quit? To not give up, even in the
- 44:33midst of asking, not once, not twice, but three times.
- 44:37If it be possible, let this cup pass from me nevertheless.
- 44:43Not my will, but thine be done. If Jesus can do that for you,
- 44:51can you not do the same thing for Him?
- 44:59We got as far as I wanted to get this morning.
- 45:04We're going to put a plug in it there, Lord willing, in the next
- 45:07week or two with the most. I'll have some things recorded
- 45:13for chapters 12 and 13, but you just can't study Chapter 11 in
- 45:19its context without starting in chapter 10, verse 32 and going
- 45:23down through chapter 12, verse 2 because it's the same
- 45:26discussion. Thank you so much for your
- 45:29comments and for your participation.
- 45:30I hope that this class has been beneficial to you and thank you
- 45:34once again to Brent and the elders for the opportunity to
- 45:36teach this quarter.
