Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to part two of my special two part
- 0:02Speaker 1: to check with the daily Discussion with former Eagles tight
- 0:04Speaker 1: end Chad Lewis. In part one, we heard great stories
- 0:08Speaker 1: of Chad's rise from a walk on at BYU into
- 0:11Speaker 1: becoming an NFL player and Super Bowl champ with the Rams.
- 0:14Speaker 1: In Part two, we get into Chad's emergence into a
- 0:17Speaker 1: Pro Bowl tight end for the Eagles under Andy Reid.
- 0:19Speaker 1: You'll love his stories and memories. Now let's get to
- 0:22Speaker 1: part two. In two thousand, you experienced a breakthrough. You
- 0:34Speaker 1: had sixty nine catches, seven hundred and thirty five yards
- 0:37Speaker 1: and three touchdowns. Chad, what click for you?
- 0:41Speaker 2: It was the relationship on the field I had with Donovan,
- 0:45Speaker 2: running good routes, being a friendly target for him. We
- 0:49Speaker 2: had Duce Daley in the backfield, Charles Johnson as one
- 0:55Speaker 2: of our number one wide receivers. Every quarterback needs a
- 0:59Speaker 2: tight end, and I was a friendly spot for Donovan.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I got to where he could trust me running routes.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I felt like I was always on the same page
- 1:10Speaker 2: with him on where he wanted my depth on my
- 1:14Speaker 2: routse to be. And that was key for me. I
- 1:18Speaker 2: always wanted to be on the same page as him.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I wanted to know where he was comfortable with me
- 1:23Speaker 2: in the offense, and I tried tried my butt off
- 1:26Speaker 2: to get there and to be there, to be dependable.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And that was a key thing. Like that relationship. What
- 1:36Speaker 2: else was key and just as important as Andy Reid's
- 1:40Speaker 2: confidence in me as a player, as a tight end,
- 1:44Speaker 2: as a leader on the team, in the locker room,
- 1:47Speaker 2: even even with my past of being a free agent
- 1:51Speaker 2: and bouncing around. He knew something about what was inside
- 1:55Speaker 2: of me and plugged me in and kept giving me confidence.
- 2:00Speaker 2: As we you know, turned it around from a five
- 2:02Speaker 2: win team to you know, a really good team. Our
- 2:06Speaker 2: defense was incredible, so Jim Johnson was he was on
- 2:13Speaker 2: the same page with Andy and turned that thing into
- 2:15Speaker 2: an unbelievable defense. And our offense with Rod Dawhouer and
- 2:18Speaker 2: then through the years different coordinators, Brad Childress, Marty morning Wegg,
- 2:24Speaker 2: we were a tough offense. We wanted to be tough
- 2:27Speaker 2: to be beat. And from the beginning it was it
- 2:32Speaker 2: was building a good relationship with Donovan to where he
- 2:34Speaker 2: knew if he chucked it, I was going to go
- 2:37Speaker 2: catch it, and I was going to do whatever I
- 2:40Speaker 2: could to catch it, and that's what happened. And I
- 2:44Speaker 2: thought we made really good music together. I thought we
- 2:48Speaker 2: always had a really good relationship on and off the field.
- 2:53Speaker 2: He was a spectacular athlete. He he had a drive
- 3:00Speaker 2: was phenomenal because he combined it with his athletic ability.
- 3:03Speaker 2: He was one of the strongest players on our whole team.
- 3:06Speaker 3: He loved to lift, and his ability to help turn
- 3:13Speaker 3: that team, an organization and city around that was phenomenal.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Just for that, I want him to be put in
- 3:21Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame. And then you put all of
- 3:23Speaker 2: his numbers on top of that, I think Donovan should
- 3:26Speaker 2: be in the Hall of Fame.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, look you look at his numbers and how that
- 3:32Speaker 1: stacks up. You could certainly make a case for that.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But one thing that I always remember about you, Chad,
- 3:37Speaker 1: is your knack for coming up with really challenging catches
- 3:41Speaker 1: over the middle, really dependable hands. And Donovan throws a fastball.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Throw a fastball. So was there anything you had to
- 3:47Speaker 1: do in terms of your training regimen to prepare for that?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Did you catch x amount of balls out of the
- 3:53Speaker 1: judge machine or did you have any take any measures
- 3:56Speaker 1: to be able to really dial that in.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, not only did I catch balls off the jugs
- 4:02Speaker 2: to prepare for Donovan's speed, Like he came off the mound,
- 4:05Speaker 2: he could throw, he could throw heaters. I bought a
- 4:09Speaker 2: drugs machine and I put it in my garage at
- 4:12Speaker 2: home in Utah, and I had all my neighborhood, all
- 4:15Speaker 2: the kids in my neighborhood pumping me balls from the
- 4:17Speaker 2: drugs machine. So when I was at home, I turned
- 4:20Speaker 2: that Dugs machine up to Donovan McNab speed and I
- 4:23Speaker 2: caught balls all off season so that I would be
- 4:27Speaker 2: prepared for that speed to catch those balls. And I
- 4:32Speaker 2: think that was very helpful for me. Catching extra balls
- 4:35Speaker 2: and practice from him was helpful. I think all of
- 4:39Speaker 2: us as a team, we were extremely hungry, I mean hungry.
- 4:43Speaker 2: We wanted to win a Super Bowl. We wanted to
- 4:45Speaker 2: turn that city around, We wanted to be winners. There
- 4:50Speaker 2: was definitely a hunger on that team. There was a fight,
- 4:53Speaker 2: there was we had it, and we were you know,
- 4:57Speaker 2: everyone knows we were this close to going to force
- 5:00Speaker 2: Super Bowls. We went to four straight NCY championships and
- 5:03Speaker 2: then finally beat the Falcons one to the Super Bowl,
- 5:05Speaker 2: got beat by the Patriots, but we had a we
- 5:07Speaker 2: had a great squad. We had a very tight knit,
- 5:10Speaker 2: great chemistry team for several years. It was fun to
- 5:16Speaker 2: play with that, that group of guys. And same thing
- 5:20Speaker 2: with the coaching staff. I felt like we were tight
- 5:23Speaker 2: and from that coaching staff, It's amazing how many head
- 5:25Speaker 2: coaches bounced out of there. And you know, when I
- 5:30Speaker 2: was playing, it was Bill Walsh's tree. That was this
- 5:33Speaker 2: amazing coaching tree, and then you know, that same thing
- 5:36Speaker 2: happened with Andy Reid. It was it was phenomenal how
- 5:39Speaker 2: many of those guys had an opportunity to go be coaches.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And you know, John Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with
- 5:45Speaker 2: the with the Baltimore Ravens, and but all those guys,
- 5:49Speaker 2: Uh what what a phenomenal group of coaches and players. Yeah?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Absolutely, Now would you train with Donovan in the offseason?
- 5:57Speaker 1: Would you go to Arizona to kind of get that
- 6:00Speaker 1: poor you know, amplified even more?
- 6:03Speaker 2: No, I wish I did. Looking back on, I wish
- 6:06Speaker 2: I would have gone. You know, at least a week
- 6:08Speaker 2: or two every year. We would always come back and
- 6:11Speaker 2: start early together in Philly. So March twenty first or
- 6:15Speaker 2: before that, we were together in Philly throwing balls. And
- 6:18Speaker 2: then he spent a good amount of time in Arizona
- 6:21Speaker 2: and he had he had a bunch of dudes down
- 6:23Speaker 2: there training And this was kind of before. Like right now,
- 6:28Speaker 2: you see the tight end for the forty nine ers,
- 6:32Speaker 2: George Kittle gathering tight ends around the country. It's easy
- 6:36Speaker 2: with social media now, you know, social media changed everything.
- 6:39Speaker 2: But he's getting all the tight ends together. I wish
- 6:44Speaker 2: that I was with Donovan down in Arizona, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 2: to do it, to do it over again, I would
- 6:51Speaker 2: have taken, you know, a week every year at least
- 6:53Speaker 2: and gone and trained with him down there and spend
- 6:55Speaker 2: time that way. But I felt like we were spending
- 6:58Speaker 2: so much time together in Philly through the off season
- 7:00Speaker 2: that we had that rapport. I was personally very comfortable
- 7:05Speaker 2: with how that thing was working, where I was supposed
- 7:08Speaker 2: to be, how he was throwing. But looking back, I
- 7:12Speaker 2: would have loved to have gone down for a week
- 7:14Speaker 2: or two each year and been with him, been with
- 7:16Speaker 2: him there.
- 7:18Speaker 1: What's your favorite memory from Veterans Stadium. I've heard Brad
- 7:22Speaker 1: Child just tell me some interesting stories in the past. Uh,
- 7:25Speaker 1: is there a memory that comes to mind for you?
- 7:28Speaker 2: For me when I think of Veterans Stadium. Look, it
- 7:35Speaker 2: was a tough place to play for every opposing team
- 7:39Speaker 2: that came in there. Like we made it a difficult place,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and then the Philadelphia crowd made it an incredibly difficult place.
- 7:48Speaker 2: The turf at veter Stadium made it tough on everyone.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I was included. But it was my rookie year playing
- 7:55Speaker 2: the Cowboys Sunday night football in the rain. I didn't
- 7:59Speaker 2: even really playing that game. And we get down, there's
- 8:02Speaker 2: one minute left. We're on the eight yard line, and
- 8:06Speaker 2: John Gruden calls me into the game. He's up in
- 8:09Speaker 2: the headset. Ted Williams is on the he's John Gruden's upstairs.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Ted Williams is down with the headset on. And they
- 8:16Speaker 2: called cougar chad personnel, and so Ted looks at me,
- 8:20Speaker 2: He's like you, And so I ran out on the field.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I'm nervous, the clock's taken down. A run into the huddle.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Rodney Pete at that year, we'd gone from Ty Edward
- 8:29Speaker 2: to Rodney Peach to Ti Deedverard, back to Rodney Pete
- 8:32Speaker 2: and then Bobby Hoying to finish the year. So Rodney
- 8:35Speaker 2: looked at me in the eyes and he called my
- 8:37Speaker 2: players red right f left three twenty two wistick nod,
- 8:42Speaker 2: and he's just staring at me the whole way, like, bro,
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'm coming to you. It was the perfect call for
- 8:48Speaker 2: a wet, rainy day because it was a double move
- 8:51Speaker 2: route by me as a tight end, and the strong
- 8:56Speaker 2: safety was Omar Stautmeyer for the Cowboys. He played at
- 8:59Speaker 2: Fresno State. He was there because he was a great hitter,
- 9:02Speaker 2: great tackler, super tough guy. Covering people was not like
- 9:07Speaker 2: his greatest strength. He was a great tackler, and so
- 9:10Speaker 2: when I ran a double move, he came down to
- 9:12Speaker 2: cover me. He came down really hard and then slipped
- 9:14Speaker 2: on the wet turf and I cut back inside. I
- 9:17Speaker 2: was wide open. Rodney hit me touchdown, beat the Cowboys
- 9:23Speaker 2: that moment in Veterans Stadium, and that was my moment.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And I threw the ball U from the stands. Got
- 9:31Speaker 2: a fine for it, two five hundred bucks for throwing
- 9:33Speaker 2: a ball in the stands, and the crowd's going crazy.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I'm going crazy, Eagles going crazy. We beat the Cowboys
- 9:42Speaker 2: the game before, we let one slip away. You know,
- 9:46Speaker 2: we muffed a field goal on the four yard line
- 9:50Speaker 2: with a couple seconds ago, and we didn't beat them.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And so this time to be able to beat the
- 9:54Speaker 2: Cowboys arrival at home in the rain, and to be
- 9:58Speaker 2: a part of that. I knew that I was going
- 10:01Speaker 2: to be on the team the next week. I knew
- 10:04Speaker 2: that good things were happening in my career, that I
- 10:09Speaker 2: was able to help our team, you know, make a
- 10:11Speaker 2: play in a crucial time. That was my memory of
- 10:14Speaker 2: Veteran Stadium. So when I think of the vet that's
- 10:18Speaker 2: what I think of.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I have another one for you, And for some reason,
- 10:21Speaker 1: this game sticks out vividly in my memory. December thirtieth,
- 10:25Speaker 1: two thousand and one. You had two touchdowns in this game.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It was Eagles Giants, and then five or six seconds
- 10:32Speaker 1: left in the game, Kerry Collins throws to Tiki Barber,
- 10:36Speaker 1: who throws it to Ron Dixon who heads up that
- 10:39Speaker 1: left sideline. What are your memories from that game?
- 10:42Speaker 2: Chat? Oh? Shoot, I wanted to tackle that dude, Please
- 10:46Speaker 2: stop and please stop it. I think it was Damon
- 10:48Speaker 2: Moore that stopped him and you know, save the game
- 10:50Speaker 2: for us. I could not believe it. That was nuts,
- 10:53Speaker 2: But that game was big. Michael Barrow was their middle linebacker.
- 10:58Speaker 2: He was great player. He could cover the run, he
- 11:02Speaker 2: could cover the pass. On both of my touchdowns, I
- 11:06Speaker 2: believe he was guarding me, especially the second one. He was.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I mean, he was draped all over me and i'd
- 11:12Speaker 2: just been Sam Garns or strong safety poked me in
- 11:15Speaker 2: the eye in the third quarter, and I was having
- 11:16Speaker 2: like real blurry vision, and I was praying on the sidelines,
- 11:20Speaker 2: like please let me see this ball. Like so when
- 11:23Speaker 2: I went in similar about on the eight yard line
- 11:26Speaker 2: and the same route, why stick nod Donovan threw that
- 11:30Speaker 2: thing and I was well covered. Michael Barrow was he was,
- 11:36Speaker 2: I was wearing him. And I turned back and I
- 11:40Speaker 2: saw this brown laser beam coming from Donovan. It was
- 11:43Speaker 2: just like all I saw was a little bit of color.
- 11:47Speaker 2: It was brown, and it was heading for my face.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Then I turned and I put my hands up and
- 11:53Speaker 2: it just stuck like on my face mask and on
- 11:55Speaker 2: my hands and I fell to the ground with that ball.
- 11:59Speaker 2: It was that was something else. Freddy Mitchell came over
- 12:03Speaker 2: and you know, he was pointing at Michael Barrow and
- 12:07Speaker 2: and we were all just celebrating, like that was such
- 12:09Speaker 2: a big moment. We I think it was the first
- 12:11Speaker 2: time we won the division in a while. That was
- 12:16Speaker 2: that was so much fun. Uh. I remember that game.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I've seen it on video through the years. It was
- 12:24Speaker 2: important to our team to get over that hump to
- 12:26Speaker 2: beat the Giants. I think, uh that was a tough rivalry.
- 12:31Speaker 2: That was a big win, and as a team like that,
- 12:34Speaker 2: that was a good one. That was a lot of fun.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Was there a particular linebacker or even a safety that
- 12:40Speaker 1: you feel gave me the most trouble throughout your career?
- 12:44Speaker 2: Dude, I was. I was impressed with so many players,
- 12:46Speaker 2: like I thought. I thought Lynch from the Buccaneers was
- 12:52Speaker 2: really tough. You know, John Lynch was smart, he was
- 12:56Speaker 2: really physical. He was he was the leader of that team.
- 13:02Speaker 2: They were Super Bowl champs. I got to know him
- 13:05Speaker 2: at the Pro Bowl. He was really good. Michael Barrow
- 13:11Speaker 2: Giants linebacker, I thought he was he was really tough,
- 13:15Speaker 2: he played with he was a good athlete. I thought
- 13:21Speaker 2: Michael strahan Is a defensive defensive end, was a complete beast.
- 13:29Speaker 2: There were there were so many good players through the years.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I think that was one of the best parts about
- 13:34Speaker 2: playing in the NFL is you're going against the best
- 13:36Speaker 2: players in the world, the best players in the world
- 13:40Speaker 2: who were getting better each year, dedicated to their craft,
- 13:45Speaker 2: watching tape on you, and you had to watch tape
- 13:49Speaker 2: on them. You had to look for tiny little things
- 13:51Speaker 2: that would give you the edge to beat him. And
- 13:55Speaker 2: I loved, I loved the whole thing. The chess match
- 13:58Speaker 2: with their defensive coordinator, the chess match with their individual players,
- 14:02Speaker 2: their talents, and then our own confidence and our own
- 14:06Speaker 2: will to beat them and to prepare to beat them.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I thought our coaches. I thought our coaches were amazing.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Andy Reid's staff put us in a great position week
- 14:15Speaker 2: after week to be successful, and the confidence I felt
- 14:20Speaker 2: like year after year just grew. And so that was
- 14:23Speaker 2: fun to play the best players in the world. And
- 14:26Speaker 2: I thought we had the best team in the world.
- 14:29Speaker 2: And I just wish we had a couple of Super
- 14:31Speaker 2: Bowl rings to show for it.
- 14:34Speaker 1: So you serve as Donovan's safety blanket, reliable red zone
- 14:38Speaker 1: presence all through the golden years of Andy Reid, and
- 14:44Speaker 1: you get to the top of the mountain and you fall.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Just sure, I should say up the top of the
- 14:49Speaker 1: mountain two thousand and one, two three, But two thousand
- 14:52Speaker 1: and four was different. Chad, it must have meant a
- 14:55Speaker 1: lot to you to be able to go into that
- 14:59Speaker 1: game against the Falcons, come out victorious and get that
- 15:03Speaker 1: proverbial monkey off your back. What are your memories going
- 15:07Speaker 1: into going into that game and then finally conquering that man?
- 15:11Speaker 2: My memories going into that game. I just felt good
- 15:13Speaker 2: about it. It snowed a foot of snow the night
- 15:17Speaker 2: before the game, and we were excuse me, you were pumped.
- 15:24Speaker 2: We were pumped to play them. Our defense wanted to
- 15:27Speaker 2: rise up last beat Michael Vick. He was a fantastic
- 15:32Speaker 2: superstar player. And uh there were a couple of shots
- 15:37Speaker 2: that that we put on Michael Vick as a defense
- 15:41Speaker 2: to slow him down. I know Brian Dawkins had a
- 15:45Speaker 2: shout on Crumpler, they're tight end. That was just just amazing, Like,
- 15:49Speaker 2: I don't know how he even got up, And as
- 15:53Speaker 2: a team, we were bound to determine that was that
- 15:56Speaker 2: was our game, that was our time. And if catching
- 15:59Speaker 2: the touchdown to beat the Cowboys was my memory of
- 16:02Speaker 2: the VET, it was catching the touchdowns to help beat
- 16:04Speaker 2: the Falcons. That is my memory of the Link. And
- 16:09Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for that experience, that opportunity. I'm bummed
- 16:12Speaker 2: that my Liz Frank popped. I'm bummed that I was
- 16:15Speaker 2: not able to play in the Super Bowl, but I'm
- 16:17Speaker 2: so proud that I was able to play with my
- 16:19Speaker 2: team give it all I had, help us beat the Falcons,
- 16:23Speaker 2: win the NFC Championship at home and send the Eagles
- 16:27Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl. Like that memory that time, the feeling,
- 16:31Speaker 2: the chemistry of our team, the brotherhood that we all felt,
- 16:36Speaker 2: the funny things that we had going on t o
- 16:41Speaker 2: Coming on that team and being such a sensational impact
- 16:44Speaker 2: for that team that year was so much fun, like
- 16:48Speaker 2: the whole thing. Just loved every part of it.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you put a bow on that with your touchdown
- 16:55Speaker 1: in that game at the end. Could you take me
- 16:57Speaker 1: through what you remember from that play. I remember you
- 17:00Speaker 1: celebrating on the ground. Obviously you couldn't stand up, but
- 17:04Speaker 1: it was a moment looking back that that was pretty
- 17:06Speaker 1: Vito and Eagle's lore.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Yeah, we threw a big pass to Greg Lewis to
- 17:11Speaker 2: get down the field. We got to about the three
- 17:13Speaker 2: yard line and Andy called a play action passed to
- 17:17Speaker 2: the corner of the end zone, and I just knew
- 17:21Speaker 2: it was gonna be another touchdown and I'd caught one
- 17:23Speaker 2: earlier in the game, same end zone, same type of play.
- 17:29Speaker 2: This time, as I ran, Donovan threw it to my
- 17:31Speaker 2: back shoulder. When I turned to catch it, my foot
- 17:34Speaker 2: just popped and I felt something just this amazing release
- 17:38Speaker 2: of energy just go boom in my foot. And when
- 17:41Speaker 2: I fell to the ground, I knew that we were
- 17:44Speaker 2: going to the super Bowl. Time stood still for me.
- 17:46Speaker 2: It was like, this is so sweep, but I knew
- 17:50Speaker 2: that my foot was broken. I knew that, like something
- 17:53Speaker 2: just happened. I couldn't I couldn't immediately tell I just
- 17:57Speaker 2: I just sat on the ground and I celebrate for
- 18:00Speaker 2: a second. And I did have another divine moment. I
- 18:05Speaker 2: talked about getting answered to my prayer in college to
- 18:07Speaker 2: walk on. I had an absolutely divine moment where I
- 18:12Speaker 2: had so much peace sitting there as time stood still
- 18:15Speaker 2: for me, I knew that God had me in his arms.
- 18:20Speaker 2: My dad had given me a blessing the night before,
- 18:23Speaker 2: you know, right before the game, because I had an
- 18:25Speaker 2: injury in my tricep the week before in the Vikings game.
- 18:28Speaker 2: And I just had this calm feeling come over me,
- 18:32Speaker 2: and it felt like it lasted for several seconds. But
- 18:35Speaker 2: it was just an instant and this calm feeling. I
- 18:40Speaker 2: knew what that calm feeling was. It was that feeling
- 18:42Speaker 2: I had when my dad my brothers surrounded me gave
- 18:45Speaker 2: me a blessing. I knew that, I knew that God
- 18:48Speaker 2: was with me. I knew that everything was going to
- 18:52Speaker 2: be okay. But I was not going to be able
- 18:54Speaker 2: to play in the Super Bowl. And so when I
- 18:58Speaker 2: rolled over, I sat there and I did think I
- 19:00Speaker 2: could stand up. I was like, oh my gosh, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 2: I celebrated through the ball just from my seated position,
- 19:07Speaker 2: and then LJ. Smith ran over and he picked me up.
- 19:10Speaker 2: When he picked me up, I said, LJ. I just
- 19:11Speaker 2: broke my foot. He's like what and I was like, yeah, shoot.
- 19:17Speaker 2: And then I kind of hobbled over and I lined
- 19:21Speaker 2: up as the wing for the at and I couldn't
- 19:27Speaker 2: squad down to get my position as the wing, so
- 19:29Speaker 2: I called a time out, and who calls the time out?
- 19:31Speaker 2: During the extra point? It was nuts and Andy was
- 19:33Speaker 2: looking at me and he's like, what are you doing?
- 19:35Speaker 2: And I hobbled off the field and I was like, coach,
- 19:38Speaker 2: I just broke my foot. And I was walking on
- 19:40Speaker 2: the side of my foot. I couldn't walk normal, and
- 19:43Speaker 2: he was like, are you sure. I said, yeah, I
- 19:45Speaker 2: heard it pop and he's like, crap. And I want
- 19:48Speaker 2: to get the NFL films audio. You know they got
- 19:51Speaker 2: the microphones on the sidelines. I want to get that audio.
- 19:53Speaker 2: And hear that conversation again. I went to the sideline,
- 19:58Speaker 2: sat down brick Burke Holder. The train came over and
- 20:00Speaker 2: took off my shoe, took off my sock, grabbed my
- 20:04Speaker 2: big toe and it was as if my toe just
- 20:06Speaker 2: came apart from my foot. That was the feeling I had.
- 20:10Speaker 2: And Bobby had already popped his his lis Frank Duce
- 20:16Speaker 2: had popped his list. Frank, so I knew the injury.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And as soon as he pushed on the middle of
- 20:22Speaker 2: my foot, he looked up at me like, oh my gosh,
- 20:26Speaker 2: and instantly I knew. I was like, I tore my list, Frank,
- 20:31Speaker 2: and he said, hey, we got to take you in
- 20:32Speaker 2: and get next ray. And I was like, now I'm
- 20:34Speaker 2: staying right here. I'll go in after the game. Let's
- 20:38Speaker 2: put my shoe back on. I'll just stand here with
- 20:40Speaker 2: my guys. And so that's what happened. Put my sock
- 20:45Speaker 2: shoe on stood up. I remember grabbing Freddie Mitchell. It's
- 20:49Speaker 2: on video and I was like, Freddie, I just broke
- 20:52Speaker 2: my foot. He's like, what, No, you didn't break your foot.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I said, yeah, I broke it. Like my mind was
- 20:57Speaker 2: like in so many different places. And we got the
- 21:02Speaker 2: ball back, took a knee. Game over. You know, we're
- 21:05Speaker 2: storming out on the field, and I remember Fox Sports
- 21:10Speaker 2: interviewing me and my wife was sitting on the front
- 21:13Speaker 2: row of the south end zone. As soon as I
- 21:16Speaker 2: caught the touchdown, she went down into the tunnel. And
- 21:19Speaker 2: then when the game was over, she ran on the
- 21:20Speaker 2: field and so as I'm getting interviewed by Fox, she
- 21:24Speaker 2: jumped on me. She was like celebrating. I was like, Michelle,
- 21:26Speaker 2: I just broke my foot, and she was like what.
- 21:30Speaker 2: When I said when I caught the touchdown, she was like,
- 21:33Speaker 2: I saw the play. I didn't see you get hurt.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I said, I know, it just it just happened. Then
- 21:37Speaker 2: my brother Dave, he was next. He came running across
- 21:40Speaker 2: the field and jumped on me and I said the
- 21:43Speaker 2: same thing, it just broke my foot. And he's like, oh,
- 21:45Speaker 2: you're going to play in the Super Bowl. I'm like, no, Dave,
- 21:48Speaker 2: I'm not and it was it was humbling. I went
- 21:52Speaker 2: into the locker room, celebrated with my teammates. I didn't
- 21:55Speaker 2: really tell anyone. I told Donovan. I definitely talked to
- 21:59Speaker 2: Andy about it. I just wanted the Eagles to celebrate
- 22:02Speaker 2: that win that night, that we're going to the super Bowl.
- 22:05Speaker 2: And I went in. I gotta. I got an x
- 22:10Speaker 2: ray and the x ray was conclusive that I tore
- 22:13Speaker 2: My Lis Brank. Uh. That was tough. My family all
- 22:18Speaker 2: came in the locker room. We were together, we said
- 22:21Speaker 2: a prayer together, we were we were smiling, laughing, crying together.
- 22:25Speaker 2: It was like, you gotta be kidding. Andy came over.
- 22:27Speaker 2: He's like, shoot, man, are you kidding me? I said, well,
- 22:31Speaker 2: at least at least you went out on top, you know,
- 22:35Speaker 2: you went out with a bang. He was really cool
- 22:38Speaker 2: in that moment. Donovan was cool. And Uh. I called
- 22:43Speaker 2: Jeff Thomas and he was my backup before, and I said, Jeff,
- 22:46Speaker 2: you gotta you gotta call Andy, let him know you're
- 22:48Speaker 2: in shape. You got to take my place and go
- 22:50Speaker 2: to the super Bowl. He's like, what happened? I said,
- 22:52Speaker 2: I tore My Lis prank and uh, I'm not gonna
- 22:57Speaker 2: be able to play, And so that's what happened. He
- 22:59Speaker 2: called Andy, he called Tom Melvin, the tight ends coach,
- 23:01Speaker 2: and they brought him in for a workout, signed him.
- 23:04Speaker 2: He played in the Super Bowl. I was so happy
- 23:06Speaker 2: for him, like, what a stud. But that's just one
- 23:10Speaker 2: of those things, like why did that happen? Right then?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Doing a catch that I'd made my whole life a
- 23:15Speaker 2: million times. I know when I get to Heaven, one
- 23:20Speaker 2: of the questions I'll ask, is, Hey, how come that
- 23:24Speaker 2: happened in that game? Right then? I'm sure it's all
- 23:28Speaker 2: going to make sense at that point. I've never cried
- 23:31Speaker 2: about it. I've always felt a great measure of peace
- 23:35Speaker 2: about it. That, Hey, that was that was just meant
- 23:38Speaker 2: to be. It's part of the game. It was a
- 23:41Speaker 2: wild injury at a critical moment. It's helped me realize
- 23:47Speaker 2: how important my family is to me. Like I wanted
- 23:50Speaker 2: to play in the Super Bowl. I want to be
- 23:51Speaker 2: the MVP of the Super Bowl. I wanted to drive
- 23:53Speaker 2: away in the truck. But more than the truck was
- 23:58Speaker 2: the realization that this family mine who's supported me through
- 24:02Speaker 2: thick and thin and been with me they are my
- 24:05Speaker 2: super Bowl and going forward from from two thousand and
- 24:09Speaker 2: four it was February two thousand and five. That's a
- 24:12Speaker 2: great realization. You know how important my family is to me,
- 24:15Speaker 2: and you know, I gotta do as much as I
- 24:18Speaker 2: can to always honor them.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I know the game didn't go the way you were
- 24:23Speaker 1: Eagles fans watching would have liked, but I have to
- 24:27Speaker 1: imagine your story is so unique. That you were there
- 24:30Speaker 1: from the very beginning of Andy Reid start to get
- 24:32Speaker 1: to that point, knowing you played such a pivotal role,
- 24:36Speaker 1: that Super Bowl experience must have been really validating for
- 24:40Speaker 1: you standing there watching everything, or maybe not standing there
- 24:44Speaker 1: because of the foot, but the moment must have been
- 24:47Speaker 1: extra special for someone like yourself.
- 24:49Speaker 2: It was so special. Andy wanted me up in the box,
- 24:52Speaker 2: and I was like, Hey, I'm not going in the box.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I'm coming on the locker room. He's like, no, you can't.
- 24:56Speaker 2: I'm going to be on the sideline. He's like, no,
- 24:58Speaker 2: you can't sit on the sideline. You're you're in harm's
- 25:01Speaker 2: way down there. Just go up in the box and
- 25:03Speaker 2: that's where the injured players are going to be. And
- 25:05Speaker 2: I was like, no, Like, just give me this. Just
- 25:08Speaker 2: give me this. I want to sit with my teammates.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I'll be I'll sit out of the way, sit on
- 25:13Speaker 2: the equipment boxes, I don't care. I'll be out of
- 25:16Speaker 2: everyone's way, but I want to be down there. I
- 25:19Speaker 2: had two screws that were put on my foot a
- 25:21Speaker 2: couple of days before, and he allowed me to sit
- 25:25Speaker 2: on the sidelines, and I stayed out of everyone's way.
- 25:28Speaker 2: It was good to be there. Tough, tough thing to lose,
- 25:32Speaker 2: to get beat by the Patriots. They were a good team,
- 25:36Speaker 2: they were great opponent. I was. I was so proud
- 25:41Speaker 2: of our guys, how everyone played and fought. I wanted
- 25:44Speaker 2: I wanted to win that baby. I thought t O
- 25:47Speaker 2: had an amazing game. I thought we were close, just
- 25:51Speaker 2: came up a little short. And but that was cool
- 25:55Speaker 2: to be able to see that whole transition, you know,
- 25:58Speaker 2: as Andy got there and turn that thing around. That
- 26:03Speaker 2: was quite a bride love being a part of that
- 26:05Speaker 2: whole thing.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Well, when did you realize that it was over for
- 26:08Speaker 1: you in terms of your career.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I didn't know after that if I would play again.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I knew how difficult it was to come back from
- 26:16Speaker 2: a Liz prank, and so I started rehabbing really strong
- 26:21Speaker 2: in the off season, not knowing if I would come back.
- 26:26Speaker 2: My mission president from Taiwan, his name is Kent Watson.
- 26:30Speaker 2: He called me out of the blue and said, hey,
- 26:31Speaker 2: I want to come by your house. I'm like, okay.
- 26:34Speaker 2: He came to my house and he had a USA
- 26:37Speaker 2: Today article of a USA ski jumper who she was doing,
- 26:43Speaker 2: you know, aerials, laying on the ground. She popped her
- 26:46Speaker 2: Liz prank. She came back and competed again. He handed
- 26:50Speaker 2: me that article and he's like, you need to play
- 26:53Speaker 2: football again. And I was like, I think I'm good.
- 26:56Speaker 2: I think I'm probably going to retire. He's like, no,
- 26:59Speaker 2: you need to play again. You need to rehab your foot,
- 27:02Speaker 2: and if you can get to where you can play again,
- 27:05Speaker 2: you can get to that level again. You're gonna have
- 27:07Speaker 2: a good foot for the rest of your life. And
- 27:10Speaker 2: I felt the wisdom in what he was saying, and
- 27:13Speaker 2: I was like, you're right, I gotta go back. And
- 27:17Speaker 2: that's when I stepped up my rehab. I was surprised
- 27:20Speaker 2: how much it hurt to run on my foot after
- 27:23Speaker 2: they took the screws out. I had scar tissue in there,
- 27:27Speaker 2: and to get my foot going again took a lot
- 27:29Speaker 2: of work, and I went back. I think it was
- 27:34Speaker 2: week and nine. I went back to the Eagles. They
- 27:39Speaker 2: had some injuries and Rick burke Holder, the trainer, had
- 27:42Speaker 2: been calling me all year. He's like, hey, can you play.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I was like, I still haven't run. Call me the
- 27:48Speaker 2: next week, Hey can you play? And finally about week
- 27:51Speaker 2: nine he's like, hey, this is it. Like, if it's
- 27:54Speaker 2: going to happen, it's now or never. And so I
- 27:57Speaker 2: went back. I had really good workout. We played the
- 28:01Speaker 2: Cowboys that week. I think it was his Monday Night football.
- 28:05Speaker 2: John Madden was on the telecast. I caught a pass
- 28:10Speaker 2: up the left sideline and ran for about twenty yards
- 28:14Speaker 2: or something, and he was just saying great stuff. The
- 28:19Speaker 2: crowd gave me a standing ovation because I was back.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Felt so good to be back. Right at the end
- 28:24Speaker 2: of the game, there was an interception. Donovan tried to
- 28:27Speaker 2: make the tackle, ended up tearing his groin, got a
- 28:31Speaker 2: sports hernia. He was done for the season. I thought
- 28:35Speaker 2: we were gonna run it back and go to the
- 28:37Speaker 2: Super Bowl that year. That was really tough. I finished
- 28:39Speaker 2: that year and when I walked off the field after
- 28:42Speaker 2: the last game. I felt in my heart like that
- 28:45Speaker 2: was my time to go. I was thirty four, thirty
- 28:48Speaker 2: five years old. I didn't want to have another major injury.
- 28:53Speaker 2: I was grateful for everything that happened, and that's what
- 28:56Speaker 2: I chose to do, is retire. At that time I
- 29:00Speaker 2: talked to Andy and my exit physical I'll just told
- 29:02Speaker 2: him thank you and that was probably it for me,
- 29:04Speaker 2: and he just thanked me and then said, if you
- 29:07Speaker 2: want to play, let me know, give me a call.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Like so that's how it ended for me. It just
- 29:13Speaker 2: rode off into the sunset, came back here as you tah,
- 29:16Speaker 2: got a job and live down Hey.

- 31:28Speaker 1: And I appreciate you being so gracious with your time chat.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I could talk football with you all day, but in
- 31:34Speaker 1: the interest of time for you and may I want
- 31:37Speaker 1: to allow you a moment to really bring the audience
- 31:40Speaker 1: up to speed with what you've been up to and
- 31:42Speaker 1: some of your ventures.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I've been working at BYU in the Athletic department for
- 31:48Speaker 2: fifteen years. Now. I'm the director of the fundraising team,
- 31:52Speaker 2: so I help coordinate all the donations to the Athletic
- 31:55Speaker 2: department at BYU for the sports and now I'm also
- 31:59Speaker 2: the sported minute straighter for men's and women's golf and
- 32:02Speaker 2: men's and women's volleyball. And it's been a fun job.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Tom Homo was the athletic director who hired me. He's
- 32:09Speaker 2: a guy who played safety for the forty nine Ers,
- 32:12Speaker 2: had three Super Bowl rings as a player and one
- 32:15Speaker 2: Super Bowl ring as a coach. There so four super
- 32:18Speaker 2: Bowl rings. We were always on the same page. His
- 32:23Speaker 2: number two guy, Brian Santiago, is now the athletic director
- 32:26Speaker 2: of BYU, and we've had tons of momentum. It's been
- 32:30Speaker 2: fun to work with the football team, the coaches, the
- 32:35Speaker 2: head coach, Colonie Satake as a former teammate of mine
- 32:38Speaker 2: at BYU. Great friend. I've been so thrilled for his
- 32:41Speaker 2: success and his goodness, what he represents, how he treats people,
- 32:46Speaker 2: and to be back part of the game, being able
- 32:49Speaker 2: to help the student athletes like Richie Saunders is our
- 32:54Speaker 2: superstar basketball player. He's going to go to the NBA.
- 32:58Speaker 2: He just tour his acoup days ago really disappointing, and
- 33:02Speaker 2: I was able to share some messages with him of
- 33:06Speaker 2: I know what it's like to get an injury right
- 33:09Speaker 2: before something really important. Mine was the Super Bowl. His
- 33:12Speaker 2: is he wants to go to the NBA Draft, and
- 33:16Speaker 2: I just felt like it was important to send him
- 33:19Speaker 2: a couple of pages of my book. I wrote a
- 33:21Speaker 2: book called Surround Yourself with Greatness, and I included that
- 33:25Speaker 2: experience of tearing on Liz Frank and how just a
- 33:30Speaker 2: memory of that. I shared him a couple of those pages,
- 33:33Speaker 2: and Richie just said, hey, you got a copy of
- 33:36Speaker 2: your book, And I said, yeah, I'll bring about tomorrow.
- 33:38Speaker 2: So I'm going to meet up with him today, give
- 33:40Speaker 2: him my book, talk to him about he has surgery
- 33:43Speaker 2: on his acl tomorrow. I feel like in my life
- 33:46Speaker 2: I've had a good, good experiences that I can now
- 33:50Speaker 2: share with with Richie and other guys to help them
- 33:53Speaker 2: as they're chasing their dreams. So it's been a really
- 33:57Speaker 2: valuable thing for me to be back at BYU, not
- 34:02Speaker 2: only my alma mater, but a place that tries to
- 34:06Speaker 2: do what I was doing as a missionary, share the
- 34:09Speaker 2: message of Jesus Christ. We do that through sports. We
- 34:15Speaker 2: try and represent the best we can, and it's been
- 34:19Speaker 2: really cool to be back there to be a part
- 34:21Speaker 2: of it. So thanks for letting me talk about like
- 34:25Speaker 2: Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite, all the old times, but
- 34:29Speaker 2: also what's happening right now too. I appreciate Eagles fans
- 34:32Speaker 2: because they care more than anyone. They've been so good
- 34:35Speaker 2: to me through the years. I love them and thank
- 34:38Speaker 2: you very much. Andrew. Oh, it was a blast chat.
- 34:41Speaker 1: And by the way, I see a football over your
- 34:43Speaker 1: right shoulder. That's in the cabinet there.
- 34:45Speaker 2: What game is that? From that one right there was
- 34:55Speaker 2: Eagles Redskins two thousand and three NFC East Division champs.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Coach wanted all of us to have that game. I
- 35:04Speaker 2: do have a bunch of football's lying around the touchdown
- 35:08Speaker 2: in the to beat the Giants. I'll grab that. I
- 35:17Speaker 2: put on there, like the name of the play three
- 35:20Speaker 2: twenty two wise stick nod. I put my Chinese name
- 35:23Speaker 2: on there, lou Galway in the date. But that was
- 35:25Speaker 2: the Michael Barrow New York Giants win the division touchdown ball.
- 35:30Speaker 2: That's sweet to look it up.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that was that the Damon More game.
- 35:36Speaker 2: That was the Damon morg great picture right there of
- 35:41Speaker 2: Jeff Thomasin and Mike Bartram. Those guys gave me this
- 35:45Speaker 2: and on the bottom, I don't know if you can
- 35:47Speaker 2: read it, but it says, when the character of a
- 35:49Speaker 2: man is not clear to you, look at his friends
- 35:54Speaker 2: and I love that. This is something that means a
- 35:58Speaker 2: lot to me. This hung in the Eagles facility for years,
- 36:04Speaker 2: and after I was hurt, Donovan pulled it off the
- 36:07Speaker 2: wall and he just ripped this thing off the wall
- 36:11Speaker 2: and he signed it and he sent it to me
- 36:13Speaker 2: and it's been in my office ever since. That's awesome. Yeah,
- 36:18Speaker 2: great teammate, great coaches, great franchise we had. That was
- 36:22Speaker 2: a lot of fun. I love going back and watching games,
- 36:25Speaker 2: and Jeffrey Larry's been great to me. Howie Roseman has
- 36:29Speaker 2: been great to me when I go back and they'll
- 36:32Speaker 2: let me go to practice and just hang around. Feels good,
- 36:35Speaker 2: feels like a home to me.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Well, I hope I get to see you this summer
- 36:39Speaker 1: if you're around around for training camp. Would love to
- 36:41Speaker 1: introduce myself in person. But it's been a blast talking
- 36:44Speaker 1: to you, Chad, going down memory lane and really allowing
- 36:47Speaker 1: you to share your story. I think it's something that
- 36:50Speaker 1: resonates with a lot of people who grew up watching
- 36:52Speaker 1: you play, and so thanks for carving out a lot
- 36:55Speaker 1: of time to talk about it.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you're welcome. Thank you so much for having me
- 36:59Speaker 2: on talking Eagles football. Baby.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Absolutely, So that's gonna do it. For this edition of
- 37:05Speaker 1: The Checko Daily for Chad Lewis, I'm Andrew de Checko
