- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, I'm will more about drama. This is Freddie Rodriguez.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Welcome to those Amigos. You know, man, we've been doing
- 0:16Speaker 1: this for a while. A little bit, a little bit,
- 0:19Speaker 1: a little bit, just a little bit, just a little
- 0:21Speaker 1: bit at bit a little bit. We've been doing those
- 0:24Speaker 1: Amigos for just a little bit. Huh, A little bit,
- 0:27Speaker 1: a little bit, a little bit. That's kind of good.
- 0:31Speaker 1: That's pretty good. A little bit. Wait, it was great,
- 0:34Speaker 1: it was good, fantastic. Well, then I'll take that to
- 0:37Speaker 1: the big Welcome to another riven An episode of the Amigos.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We get to talk to each other, you know, no
- 0:46Speaker 1: third wheel, no third wheel today. But I love these
- 0:53Speaker 1: conversations because I think for our fans these other things. Oh,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I want you if somebody told me to say, how
- 0:59Speaker 1: do you? Who's that? Someone that you and I don't know.
- 1:03Speaker 1: There was a woman that came up to me at
- 1:05Speaker 1: a restaurant called Jeffries in Malibu.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, jeoffrees.
- 1:12Speaker 1: On on the on the coast. Okay, you your pronunciation
- 1:14Speaker 1: is obviously it's not anyway. So I'm at Geoffres like
- 1:20Speaker 1: I feel like when I said my my, my jow thislocates.
- 1:23Speaker 1: It's Josh, which is which is? Which is a good place,
- 1:29Speaker 1: great place, seafood place. It's off of this beautiful balcony
- 1:32Speaker 1: that just clears the houses that are on the beach,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and then you have this beautiful look of Maliburn. It's
- 1:38Speaker 1: really nice. And I'm standing in line to get at
- 1:40Speaker 1: our table and I'm there with my son and my daughter,
- 1:42Speaker 1: my lady and and we're sitting there and we're waiting
- 1:46Speaker 1: there and this lady tops my shoulder and goes, hey,
- 1:50Speaker 1: I just wanted to say that I listened to your
- 1:53Speaker 1: podcast and there's so many things you guys talk about
- 1:58Speaker 1: that is once so interesting and things really just creates clarity.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And I was like, that was an interesting note that
- 2:04Speaker 1: she said, it creates clarity. And then she's like, please
- 2:07Speaker 1: tell Freddy that I'm a huge fan and all that,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and I said, okay, well I'll think about it. Now
- 2:14Speaker 1: I might information to myself. Well yeah, now I realized
- 2:16Speaker 1: I really I'm so insecure. I didn't want to say
- 2:20Speaker 1: it to you, but clarity.
- 2:22Speaker 2: But that's that's an interesting observation.
- 2:24Speaker 1: What is that? What you mean? I think that there's subjects,
- 2:27Speaker 1: there's themes, there's conversations that you know, I think we
- 2:31Speaker 1: we go to these places, you know, and we kind
- 2:34Speaker 1: of do the what ifs, you know, and you never
- 2:37Speaker 1: know who at home is listening to these you know,
- 2:41Speaker 1: these hypotheses, these simulations and figures out. Oh man, that's
- 2:44Speaker 1: what I was missing. So she she just kept complimenting
- 2:47Speaker 1: what the podcast was, and she she listened to it
- 2:49Speaker 1: was it was. It was just so nice. It was
- 2:51Speaker 1: so cool to hear that. And she worked at Geoffrees. No,
- 2:53Speaker 1: she was just going there. She was like, yeah, yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 1: so if you go to Jeoffrey's, you're not going to
- 3:00Speaker 1: jaw you know. I went to jaw Fras to have
- 3:04Speaker 1: some seafood. It's a good place. It's a great place.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Well shout out to whoever that was. I'm so happy
- 3:11Speaker 3: that we've brought clarity into you, brought clear, we very clear. Only.
- 3:22Speaker 1: So in today's episode, yes, we're gonna we're gonna prompt
- 3:25Speaker 1: the question that both of our amazing producers you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: brought to the table. Yes, the question is what do
- 3:35Speaker 1: you want to bring back? Isn't that right? Where do
- 3:37Speaker 1: you want to bring back from the good old days?
- 3:41Speaker 1: And by the way, for anyone, no matter how old
- 3:44Speaker 1: you are, you're listening to right now, your good old
- 3:46Speaker 1: days could be like the one thing that it's no
- 3:49Speaker 1: longer around. It could have been like been here five
- 3:52Speaker 1: years ago, It could have been here last year, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: it's no longer here. I mean like, for example, for
- 3:58Speaker 1: some of these the younger people listening this podcast, yeah,
- 4:02Speaker 1: you know, the good old is for them were just
- 4:05Speaker 1: before the pandemic, right when everyone got used to it
- 4:08Speaker 1: from working at home and saying like, oh, we can
- 4:10Speaker 1: just have a zoom about it as opposed to meeting
- 4:12Speaker 1: for lunch, meeting for coffee, or having an in person meeting.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Everyone got very comfortable doing business in zoom. So you
- 4:18Speaker 1: know what did we lose in that process? You know,
- 4:20Speaker 1: for you and I, it goes back to you know,
- 4:23Speaker 1: nineteen forty two, nineteen forty one, you know when we
- 4:26Speaker 1: were when we were a teenagers graduating.
- 4:28Speaker 2: College and you know, it's that vampire blood.
- 4:33Speaker 1: You have vampire blood. You know, it's like come look
- 4:35Speaker 1: into my eyes. Yeah, but but so so I the
- 4:39Speaker 1: more seriously for us, it was probably you know, the
- 4:41Speaker 1: late eighties and the nineties, early two thousands. You know
- 4:44Speaker 1: that you know that era was was an era of
- 4:47Speaker 1: wonder and was in an era and I'm having a
- 4:50Speaker 1: DejaVu right now, just a big one. But as an
- 4:53Speaker 1: era for originality, it was it was originality.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Stuff that was sort of tactile and things that you
- 5:02Speaker 3: could touch right as opposed to like going into a
- 5:06Speaker 3: database and pulling up a movie.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Our producer Cooper just said that.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Gen Z is getting really heavy into.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Vinyl records amazing, which is fantastic. And I know I've
- 5:18Speaker 3: said this before. It's fantastic from my perspective. And I
- 5:21Speaker 3: know I've said this before because.
- 5:23Speaker 1: My oldest brother was a DJ, right, and he's about.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Eight years older than me, and so some of my
- 5:30Speaker 3: earliest memories of my life is being surrounded by vinyl.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And I was surrounded by Vinyl my whole childhood. And
- 5:39Speaker 3: I just remember staring at album covers for hours and
- 5:44Speaker 3: hours on end, and like opening them and going through
- 5:48Speaker 3: them and reading the credits and reading who was on
- 5:51Speaker 3: the horns and the drums and looking at the artwork.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I'm pulling the sleeve out right, and talk about that
- 6:00Speaker 1: experience because for an artist, yeah, there was a moment
- 6:05Speaker 1: of pride when you showed up to a photo studio. Yeah,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and you guys were here to shoot your album cover. Yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 1: you were going to shoot your sleeve, Like why were
- 6:16Speaker 1: the pictures that were going to choose to be in
- 6:18Speaker 1: the foldout? Like that stuff for an artist was magical,
- 6:21Speaker 1: Like it was like, wow, I made it. I'm having
- 6:23Speaker 1: a photo shoot with my band and having a photoshoot
- 6:25Speaker 1: on my album, Like you know, that creative stuff was
- 6:27Speaker 1: really beautiful and then but I love that, like also
- 6:30Speaker 1: designing the label when you pull it out, is your
- 6:32Speaker 1: vinyl black? Is your vinyl blue? I don't know, like
- 6:35Speaker 1: you know that was They started playing with colors too.
- 6:37Speaker 3: It's a it's a whole art piece in itself, right,
- 6:41Speaker 3: It's almost like creating like a like a coffee table
- 6:43Speaker 3: book where where every detail means The Bastic.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Voice had an iconic cover, which one the Basic Voice
- 6:49Speaker 1: that was one of the first big vinyl.
- 6:53Speaker 3: License license to ill with the plane Crash. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 3: that was a good one. Even the one after that,
- 6:58Speaker 3: Paul's boutique. It was like the store on the outside.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But I mean there's already hard. I mean like Metallica
- 7:05Speaker 1: had some great covers. Gons n Roses had some epic
- 7:09Speaker 1: artwork on that cover too. I just saw Rick James
- 7:12Speaker 1: one where.
- 7:13Speaker 3: You open Rick James where you open it up and
- 7:17Speaker 3: it's him like in these like high five boots and
- 7:19Speaker 3: like he's like leaning on his guitar, and.
- 7:23Speaker 1: It was it was a whole thing.
- 7:25Speaker 3: It's everything you just said, right, It's it's stuff that
- 7:27Speaker 3: he thought out, went into the studio, took this photo,
- 7:30Speaker 3: knew that when you opened the cover, this was going
- 7:33Speaker 3: to be what it was.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Why did you Why do you feel it's coming back?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Why do you feel like young you know, like a
- 7:40Speaker 1: younger generations this covering vinyls. What do you think about it?
- 7:43Speaker 1: It's becoming magical for them?
- 7:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's an interesting question. We were just talking
- 7:48Speaker 3: about this right before we started rolling. You know, I've
- 7:50Speaker 3: been I've been listening to people like Mike Deluco r.
- 7:53Speaker 1: At New Line and what was the New Line.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I don't know where he is now, or Jason Blum
- 7:58Speaker 3: or some of these other studio guys, and they're saying
- 8:01Speaker 3: it's becoming like the seventies again, where the where the
- 8:05Speaker 3: artist and the writer are the stars. And what's interesting
- 8:09Speaker 3: about that is that gen Z are those people. They're
- 8:13Speaker 3: the ones who are being creative the way that we
- 8:16Speaker 3: were in the seventies. They're the ones who are who
- 8:19Speaker 3: are saying, I'm only going to create my original stuff
- 8:21Speaker 3: and I'm putting it on YouTube, and I don't care
- 8:24Speaker 3: if I make any money. I just want I just
- 8:26Speaker 3: want the quality of the content to be high and there.
- 8:30Speaker 2: And there's a certain aesthetic that comes.
- 8:33Speaker 3: With having that umbrella over your generation, right, and it
- 8:36Speaker 3: applies to everything it's saying, I'm going back to vinyl,
- 8:40Speaker 3: and I appreciate everything that we just talked about, the
- 8:43Speaker 3: artwork that all this other stuff. I'm going back to CDs.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I'm going back to DVDs. I have a nephew who's
- 8:51Speaker 3: in he's going to the UH to the Art Institute
- 8:54Speaker 3: in Chicago. And I remember having a This was a
- 8:57Speaker 3: couple of months ago. I remember having a conversation with
- 9:00Speaker 3: him about AI and man, he looked at me like
- 9:04Speaker 3: he wanted to kill me.
- 9:06Speaker 1: He's he was.
- 9:07Speaker 3: His generation is so bent on what they're accomplishing now.
- 9:13Speaker 3: And I didn't understand that back then, and now I
- 9:15Speaker 3: see it happening. Wow and there, and they're going to
- 9:18Speaker 3: transform our business. Man, They're gonna they are transforming it,
- 9:22Speaker 3: especially with movies like back Room and Obsession and the
- 9:25Speaker 3: stuff that gen z is doing now that there's a
- 9:27Speaker 3: there's a movement happening underneath all that, and I'm excited
- 9:31Speaker 3: to see what it is.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's that's that's great. Thanks for our
- 9:36Speaker 1: foring that, because that's that actually opens the door to
- 9:38Speaker 1: a whirl of comebacks, you know.
- 9:41Speaker 4: And yeah, and what you were saying earlier about like
- 9:45Speaker 4: back when we were kids, right, it was about original
- 9:48Speaker 4: content and maybe a sequel, right, maybe a franchise sequels.
- 9:54Speaker 1: We're actual real next chapters to the story. You know,
- 9:58Speaker 1: they weren't necessarily like let's recreate what we did in
- 10:01Speaker 1: the first one, Like I mean I love the John
- 10:04Speaker 1: Wick series. Yeah, right, Like I love the John Wick series.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But you know, the only note that I would say
- 10:10Speaker 1: is that how does it really further the story of
- 10:14Speaker 1: this guy? Except for like everything's hurting more right, a
- 10:18Speaker 1: little more differently, you know. But Keanu is Is is
- 10:23Speaker 1: a genius, and he's a phenomenal, phenomenal franchise player. You know,
- 10:27Speaker 1: he just knows how to create franchises. But for example,
- 10:31Speaker 1: you look at a franchise like that when you used
- 10:32Speaker 1: to do like like the Rocky stories, Yeah, first Rocky,
- 10:37Speaker 1: like it was that underdog right right then Rocky too,
- 10:41Speaker 1: it's about like, oh man, like, you know, tables are
- 10:44Speaker 1: turning right like now it's like, you know, he's the
- 10:46Speaker 1: guy some other young gotta get her. You know, it's
- 10:49Speaker 1: gonna come and get him, and and and so every
- 10:52Speaker 1: it was really the trajectory of a boxer, you know.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And uh, and they weren't just like they weren't just
- 10:59Speaker 1: like this is what it worked for the first one,
- 11:01Speaker 1: so we got to do it again in the second one.
- 11:04Speaker 1: It was like they were taking stories somewhere else with
- 11:06Speaker 1: these sequels. And now a lot of these sequels, and
- 11:08Speaker 1: a lot of these action sequels have fallen into a
- 11:11Speaker 1: blueprint of narrative, which means like you open the big
- 11:14Speaker 1: gass action sequence, you follow it with some you know literature,
- 11:18Speaker 1: then you you know, then you package it around and
- 11:21Speaker 1: you know, exposition, then another action sequence, then the here
- 11:24Speaker 1: comes a twist at the heel of another action sequence,
- 11:27Speaker 1: and then there's a big revelation and then there's like
- 11:30Speaker 1: the big showdown right Like it's like really cookie cutter.
- 11:33Speaker 1: If you really watch you know, movies, you start seeing that.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And I wish that people it would be more surprising
- 11:39Speaker 1: if like they allow themselves to let the story they
- 11:43Speaker 1: take where the actions can it be as supposed to be, like, oh,
- 11:45Speaker 1: pitch forty five, we got to have something blow up?
- 11:49Speaker 3: Yeah, or what were you saying earlier about explaining for
- 11:53Speaker 3: the sake of people who are on.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Network? Does that beautifully? I mean very sarcastic. It's just
- 12:05Speaker 1: in the same times, like we just be put it
- 12:08Speaker 1: like this, like we call each other when we're like
- 12:11Speaker 1: our main characters and ncs, we call each other by
- 12:13Speaker 1: each other's names, probably twice the scene, Oh hey, tourists, tourists, tourists, tourist, storist, bishop, bishop, whatever,
- 12:22Speaker 1: you know, like you know, gives, gives, gives, gives, weoll gives, well, gives.
- 12:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:26Speaker 1: It's like you got to start line with the character's name,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and it's almost like reminding people this is who I'm
- 12:31Speaker 1: talking to. You're like, well, twenty three years later, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 1: you hope that people know? Are they concerned that people
- 12:37Speaker 1: might not remember the game? I think it's that type
- 12:39Speaker 1: of like exposition is important and the recap is it's important.
- 12:43Speaker 1: So if you come back from a commercial break, there
- 12:45Speaker 1: is a very subliminal like what happened before the commercial
- 12:50Speaker 1: break that has to be sublimeinately recapped in that following
- 12:53Speaker 1: scene when you come back from the break right where where.
- 12:57Speaker 3: You feel like the way that they used to tell
- 13:00Speaker 3: stories before it was different and bringing that back, they
- 13:05Speaker 3: gave the audience more credit.
- 13:08Speaker 1: They treated us like we were actually really smart, right right,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, like like they would allow the story to
- 13:16Speaker 1: to go forward without having to go back to steps
- 13:19Speaker 1: and then forward and another two back, two steps, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 1: just to like catch us up, catch us up as
- 13:23Speaker 1: supposed to, like if you're on the ride, you're on
- 13:26Speaker 1: the ride, man, you know. So, so I'd like to
- 13:28Speaker 1: bring you know, that kind of originality where they're where
- 13:31Speaker 1: they allowed audiences to just follow the story, you know,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and I think or assume that they're on their phone,
- 13:36Speaker 1: which is what the assumption is, right, Oh, they checked
- 13:38Speaker 1: their phone and they might have missed the thing. So
- 13:40Speaker 1: let's recap it and cap it. You know, what about
- 13:42Speaker 1: those of us who are not on the phone, whether
- 13:44Speaker 1: we're watching the movie?
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah, what about bringing toys back? Our toys big with
- 13:49Speaker 3: your kids?
- 13:50Speaker 1: Huge?
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah, my daughter in laws like iPads and all that.
- 13:55Speaker 1: No, No, she's love to pretend and if she does
- 13:58Speaker 1: play a game. Is when we're on a fly. She'll
- 14:00Speaker 1: played like an in like educational game where she's just
- 14:04Speaker 1: kind of you know, going to the letters and the
- 14:07Speaker 1: shapes and the colors and then she's painting colors and
- 14:10Speaker 1: letters and yeah, but yeah, but I mean we tried,
- 14:13Speaker 1: we try our best, but it's inevitable. Right Like she
- 14:16Speaker 1: knows that I opened my she's five years old. She
- 14:18Speaker 1: knows how I opened my wife's cell phone.
- 14:21Speaker 5: She knows her code, the games on there that she
- 14:24Speaker 5: likes on her she'll just she knows how to find
- 14:27Speaker 5: the the the you know, the streaming apps. Oh right, right, right,
- 14:35Speaker 5: So it's not even even about games. It's about like
- 14:37Speaker 5: the streaming apps and going on.
- 14:41Speaker 1: You know. One one more thing that I like to
- 14:43Speaker 1: bring back is buttons, like just like I'll be able
- 14:48Speaker 1: to touch the things that I'm doing, like you know
- 14:50Speaker 1: they like yeah, library, I like to bring buttons Bay BlackBerry, BlackBerry, Yeah, BlackBerry,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and and you know kind of like you turn on
- 14:59Speaker 1: the lights and house click click, you know, in the
- 15:02Speaker 1: back is as opposed to like a touchscreen touchscreen motion voice.
- 15:07Speaker 1: You know, I mean I kind of I think the
- 15:09Speaker 1: voice suff is cool, but I don't know I missed buttons.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I remember everything used to go click, click, click click.
- 15:15Speaker 1: It's funny you say that. Man.
- 15:17Speaker 3: We were looking at a car recently and they were like, well,
- 15:20Speaker 3: here's the older model, here's the newer model. And I
- 15:23Speaker 3: was like, I like the older model because it has
- 15:26Speaker 3: all the buttons and all that.
- 15:28Speaker 1: The newer model was just like flat. Maybe it was
- 15:30Speaker 1: the kids that when we were a little kids, we
- 15:32Speaker 1: were like spaceship click click click click. Okay, we're gonna go. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:37Speaker 1: to pretend.
- 15:37Speaker 2: What about were you in the CDs when you were younger?
- 15:41Speaker 1: I went into the cities. What was your first city?
- 15:46Speaker 2: My first CD was I think Day Last Soul Three.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Feet High and Rising.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I think was my first CD because I remember back
- 15:54Speaker 3: then was like CDs were expensive, right, I first got
- 15:58Speaker 3: some money and I either that or not.
- 16:02Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I was heavy in the cassettes too, man. My first
- 16:07Speaker 3: cassette was the Beat Street soundtrack when I was like
- 16:10Speaker 3: in the fourth grade. That and and and you you
- 16:13Speaker 3: mentioned Beastie Beastie Boys, License to Ill.
- 16:17Speaker 2: I remember I had l O cooj bad on on
- 16:20Speaker 2: cassette when I.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Was like in the fourth grade. Yeah, have you met
- 16:24Speaker 1: Todd yet? No? Oh? Man, you will love.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm such a you know, understand, Like, I'm such
- 16:33Speaker 3: a huge, huge fan. He did this movie called Crush
- 16:37Speaker 3: Groove in nineteen eighty seven that that I used to
- 16:40Speaker 3: just watch over and over and over on repeat, and
- 16:43Speaker 3: I knew all his lines, like he had come in
- 16:46Speaker 3: and like, you know, this whole scene he had that
- 16:48Speaker 3: was iconic and I used to repeat all his lines
- 16:52Speaker 3: from that scene.
- 16:53Speaker 1: So like, I'm I'm like a big fan. That's fucking right. Yeah, yeah, No,
- 16:58Speaker 1: he's awesome. He's a really great dude too. It's like
- 17:00Speaker 1: super nice, open prosing. He's like Craig Guy, Craig Guy.
- 17:04Speaker 1: I love him. I love working with him. We've done
- 17:06Speaker 1: so many crossover events together. Oh yes, right, that's right. Yeah,
- 17:09Speaker 1: were always kicked ass together.
- 17:11Speaker 3: What what about when you were a kid, were you
- 17:14Speaker 3: in the cassette tapes?
- 17:16Speaker 1: I love cassettes. I used to make my own cassettes too,
- 17:19Speaker 1: used to record on them. You remember, for those of
- 17:21Speaker 1: you who might not know what it's like to record
- 17:24Speaker 1: your favorite music and make a mixtape. Oh yeah, we
- 17:28Speaker 1: used to put a cassette inside of of a boom
- 17:32Speaker 1: box that had was capable of recording. So what you
- 17:35Speaker 1: could do is you put a cassette in there and
- 17:37Speaker 1: you will be listening to radio and as soon as
- 17:40Speaker 1: your feelers soon is about to start, you like click,
- 17:42Speaker 1: You're recorded, you know, and there was always a snippet
- 17:46Speaker 1: of the radio station and behind each song. But that's
- 17:49Speaker 1: you know, you had. You had a double deck. I
- 17:52Speaker 1: had a doublet box right when.
- 17:54Speaker 3: You could record the entire radio show and then on
- 17:57Speaker 3: this one you would just sort of splice in like
- 17:59Speaker 3: not only the pieces that you wanted you so good, so.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Crazy, and then and then they also came with a
- 18:06Speaker 1: CD player on the top. It was the caste Powers
- 18:08Speaker 1: and the city, but you could do both.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, boom boxes really cool.
- 18:13Speaker 1: So cars took a little while to to adapt to CDs,
- 18:17Speaker 1: so you had to use the cassette. That was that
- 18:20Speaker 1: hat that wire that was plugged into your adaptor of
- 18:25Speaker 1: the CD player. You know, you put a c here,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you do the plug in, and you put the cassette
- 18:30Speaker 1: and the cassette player is somehow by the way, how
- 18:33Speaker 1: technology was crazy back then. You're like, wait a minute,
- 18:37Speaker 1: this CD player and I put this one here, and
- 18:39Speaker 1: I have this cassette who's communicating to the CD and
- 18:43Speaker 1: you put it in your cassette, put in your car,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and you helped the CD is playing in the car now.
- 18:47Speaker 3: It was none, and then you would have to put
- 18:49Speaker 3: like the CD like real care the CD player super careful.
- 18:53Speaker 1: So that it wouldn't skip. You had a freaking wire
- 18:57Speaker 1: hanging out of the thing. I also, you know what
- 18:58Speaker 1: also means I miss not worrying about germs and public phones?
- 19:09Speaker 1: Oh you mean like payphones? Yes? Oh man, you remember
- 19:14Speaker 1: that you would go to a PA. Here's a phone
- 19:16Speaker 1: croy grabby click click click. You know it's like three
- 19:19Speaker 1: hundred people. I just made a call that day. You
- 19:21Speaker 1: were like you didn't give a ship. You're like all right, cool.
- 19:23Speaker 3: And man, I used to have friends that used to
- 19:24Speaker 3: take it and like spin off.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Sometimes you could smell the person before it
- 19:30Speaker 1: would be like dry flam on it, like just earwax, nasty,
- 19:35Speaker 1: yeah freak.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah it felt good. It felt What about when
- 19:40Speaker 3: you when you were younger? I know your pop was
- 19:42Speaker 3: into cars too. Did he ever have like the pull
- 19:45Speaker 3: out radio yeah, or the face.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Off I don't know, like the whole unit comes out
- 19:50Speaker 1: its slide off the dashboard and just have a case
- 19:54Speaker 1: for it. Did you ever have a case. I didn't
- 19:56Speaker 1: have a case, but he had like that little handle
- 19:58Speaker 1: that flipped on you know. So, uh, for those of
- 20:01Speaker 1: you who are not understanding what we're saying here, let
- 20:03Speaker 1: me explain what it is. So sometimes you put it,
- 20:05Speaker 1: you put a aftermarket you know, cassette player, a CD
- 20:11Speaker 1: player or whatever it is. You have to pine that's right.
- 20:14Speaker 1: And and you know, it was very popular to steal
- 20:18Speaker 1: this the stereos from different cars. Uh so if you
- 20:22Speaker 1: have one of those, they smash the window and take
- 20:24Speaker 1: your radio. So they invented something where you could actually
- 20:29Speaker 1: slide off your entire unit and it wild slide off
- 20:34Speaker 1: your dashboard and you and then we'll have a little
- 20:36Speaker 1: handle that will flap down and then you literally carry
- 20:39Speaker 1: it like it was a little suitcase and you can
- 20:40Speaker 1: just take it with you to your lunch or to
- 20:42Speaker 1: whatever you've had a lunch with a big it's like,
- 20:47Speaker 1: oh my god, you got an appine. That's cool, let
- 20:49Speaker 1: me see that. But my very one was the one
- 20:54Speaker 1: where like the unit would like open up like this,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you can put the city in it, and they were
- 20:59Speaker 1: closed up the heavyer phase unit. It would just opened
- 21:02Speaker 1: up like a little door. Yeah, and then all the
- 21:05Speaker 1: lights they would tell you that you trebled in the bays,
- 21:08Speaker 1: and you know they have all those colors. And what
- 21:10Speaker 1: about a face off?
- 21:11Speaker 3: Did you ever have the face off where you press
- 21:13Speaker 3: a button and only the face comes off?
- 21:15Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, you know. I'll tell you this great story. Man,
- 21:18Speaker 1: I had just come back.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I was I was living in Chicago and I had
- 21:22Speaker 3: just come back from doing my first two movies. And
- 21:27Speaker 3: I bought a red Chevy Nova. Man used like two grand,
- 21:33Speaker 3: but it was like my first nice car, bro And
- 21:36Speaker 3: and I made I made nothing on dead presidents.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I made nothing on a walk in the clouds. And
- 21:41Speaker 1: I was having some kids. How much did you make
- 21:43Speaker 1: for that President? Thirty grand? That's crazy? How long was
- 21:47Speaker 1: that shoot?
- 21:48Speaker 3: Three months? There were both three months back when movies
- 21:51Speaker 3: would take three months. Thirty grand, bro, two grand a week, maybe,
- 21:56Speaker 3: you know. But I was like, oh my god, I'm
- 21:58Speaker 3: making two grand a thirty grand.
- 22:01Speaker 1: And I was having a kid, you know.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And I got back and my cousin worked at a
- 22:05Speaker 3: car dealership and he's like, oh, we got this clean
- 22:09Speaker 3: Chevy Nova and it was red, and I paid two
- 22:12Speaker 3: grand for it. And I was like, oh, I got
- 22:14Speaker 3: a nice car, and I was like, I gotta put
- 22:16Speaker 3: a nice sound system. And in Chicago, and this is
- 22:19Speaker 3: some some ghetto stuff right here for y'all from Chicago.
- 22:24Speaker 1: If you had a car like.
- 22:25Speaker 2: That, you had to put a speaker box in your trunk.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And they had twelve inch speakers in.
- 22:31Speaker 3: A box with an amp, and you had to have
- 22:34Speaker 3: either a slide out or a face off radio.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Man. And I had a face off bro, and.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I was bumping and I came back. I was bumping
- 22:42Speaker 3: that new Mob Deep album and like I just yeah, yeah,
- 22:46Speaker 3: got your trunk would be rattling, bro, And I just
- 22:49Speaker 3: got back. I was doing, you know, I just finished
- 22:51Speaker 3: my first two movies. I was like nineteen twenty, you know.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And man, this is it was wintertime and I was,
- 23:00Speaker 3: I had my face from the radio and it was
- 23:03Speaker 3: a huge snow that had just that had just come
- 23:05Speaker 3: down and I and I was, I was, I was
- 23:08Speaker 3: stepping over the snow and I dropped my face from
- 23:12Speaker 3: the radio in the snow.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Man and I.
- 23:15Speaker 3: And it was freaking freezing and I spent like two
- 23:17Speaker 3: hours trying to find the face and I lost the
- 23:20Speaker 3: damn face.
- 23:20Speaker 1: It's like, WHOA was it that deep? It's that deep
- 23:24Speaker 1: Chicago snow, you know. And I could not the face. Man.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I was like like crying your heads, like.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Yeah yo, I went upstairs and you know Elie.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And it wasn't a thing where you can just go
- 23:37Speaker 1: buy the face. No, you have to replace the entire radio.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I'm like, man, I just spent all this money, like
- 23:42Speaker 3: like this movie money that I had on a Chevy
- 23:44Speaker 3: Nova and my radio and the speaker box.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Inside my car. Eventually I drove.
- 23:50Speaker 2: It from LA to UH, I mean from Chicago, LA.
- 23:53Speaker 3: And that was like the car that I had here
- 23:54Speaker 3: when when I first got here in like ninety five,
- 23:57Speaker 3: did you.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Turn it in for something else? After that?
- 23:59Speaker 3: I might have sold it to somebody or whatever. That
- 24:02Speaker 3: was like my first and I remember driving from Chicago.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I really wish I would have kept my families. Would
- 24:08Speaker 1: you have first car? We had a four tourist station
- 24:11Speaker 1: wagon with the hood a different color of the car.
- 24:14Speaker 1: The hood was why why was the hood of different
- 24:16Speaker 1: because it was dentist so they were placing different Yeah. Yeah, yeah, man.
- 24:23Speaker 3: That that car got me through all my first auditions
- 24:26Speaker 3: here and it was it was. It was a good car.
- 24:29Speaker 3: But my first two movies paid for that car. Anyway,
- 24:31Speaker 3: I brought that up to say face off Radio. Yeah,
- 24:35Speaker 3: there you go, face Off Radio and twelve in speaker
- 24:38Speaker 3: boxes in the trunk hell.
- 24:41Speaker 1: That's really good. Let me see what else did we
- 24:43Speaker 1: bring back?
- 24:44Speaker 3: The experience that people will never know of going to
- 24:48Speaker 3: Tower Records or going to Amiba knowing that there's a
- 24:52Speaker 3: new album.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah, going there and they would have.
- 24:55Speaker 3: The headphones and you could listen to the album or
- 24:58Speaker 3: snippets of the album m hmm, and it was like
- 25:02Speaker 3: an experience and there would be other people there and
- 25:04Speaker 3: you'd be.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Talking about that there was when there was releases, people
- 25:08Speaker 1: would show up to get that city. Yeah, you could
- 25:10Speaker 1: be the first one to listen to the city. You know,
- 25:12Speaker 1: did you ever do that? Did you ever wait for
- 25:14Speaker 1: a CD? Which one? Did you wait for? Matchbox twenty?
- 25:18Speaker 1: Matchbox twenty? Why are you guys looking at me like that?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Did you get Matchbox twenty? Was my shit? Where where
- 25:26Speaker 1: did you go to? You know? A couple of records soundset?
- 25:29Speaker 1: So you had to like wait line and like yeah yeah.
- 25:33Speaker 1: It was like you know, you kind of just wait
- 25:35Speaker 1: for them to like stock it and then you're like
- 25:37Speaker 1: all right, cool, Then I get a piece and whatever.
- 25:40Speaker 1: But I used to used to you know, I'm I
- 25:42Speaker 1: absolutely love Matchbox twenty and and Rob Thomas is one
- 25:46Speaker 1: of my best best people in my life. I just
- 25:49Speaker 1: love him so much. I wish I see in mom
- 25:51Speaker 1: but he lives in New York. Yeah, but he's one
- 25:53Speaker 1: of the most beautiful human means in the planet. Him
- 25:55Speaker 1: and his wife Madie, you are just like both angels
- 25:58Speaker 1: on Earth. But the point is, like those were some
- 26:01Speaker 1: of my first CDs. I was like, oh cool, you
- 26:04Speaker 1: got a cee my city right right, And you were like,
- 26:06Speaker 1: here's the release date, right. I remember that season was
- 26:10Speaker 1: the name of that album. Matt Season was was, you know,
- 26:15Speaker 1: was releasing. I remember calling my friend Christian Kane. Shout
- 26:19Speaker 1: out to Christian Kane, great actor. You know we did
- 26:22Speaker 1: we did Summer Catch together and we both were match
- 26:26Speaker 1: Bucks twenty guys. Yeah, and so we you know, we
- 26:29Speaker 1: literally went and grabbed the Mad Season. We were in
- 26:31Speaker 1: North Carolina, yeah, and we were supposed to we were
- 26:36Speaker 1: shooting the Summer Catch and then Matt Season releases, and
- 26:39Speaker 1: we went and picked it up. And I can never
- 26:41Speaker 1: forget it. We had a convertible tourist, a convertible why
- 26:44Speaker 1: don't forget what it was some kind of so yeah,
- 26:48Speaker 1: they were just busting, you know, like busting the speakers,
- 26:51Speaker 1: you know, just the tools and like, yeah, but that's
- 26:55Speaker 1: simplicity of being excited to listen to it with a
- 26:58Speaker 1: friend for the first time, like coming together to listen
- 27:02Speaker 1: to it. Yes, not to me, it was like, Okay,
- 27:04Speaker 1: got the city, dude coming over.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Yes, you know what I mean, you be analyzing every.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, turn that back, man, let's play that one back.
- 27:13Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, that stuff is really really fun.
- 27:17Speaker 3: I did that a tribe called Quest or third album,
- 27:22Speaker 3: Midnight Marauders. I was living in Chicago, and I waited
- 27:26Speaker 3: at Blockbuster, not at Blockbuster.
- 27:29Speaker 1: At best Buy.
- 27:30Speaker 3: I waited at best Buy in the parking lot, and
- 27:32Speaker 3: I was like waiting for this freaking hour.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Was there the first day came out?
- 27:36Speaker 3: Man, as soon as the store open, I ran in
- 27:38Speaker 3: and I got the album.
- 27:39Speaker 1: And it was the same culture, right, like this is
- 27:41Speaker 1: the thing, Like this culture is is lost now, you know.
- 27:45Speaker 1: And and I think the idea that people can feel
- 27:48Speaker 1: the media to you know, get the things to fulfill them,
- 27:51Speaker 1: it is, uh, it sounds that it's not the level
- 27:54Speaker 1: of urgency of it.
- 27:55Speaker 2: And now it's what now, it's like, okay iTunes.
- 27:58Speaker 1: And like now listen to it later, gonna get home
- 28:00Speaker 1: or whatever. You don't even look at the album cover right,
- 28:03Speaker 1: like nothing?
- 28:03Speaker 3: You know that was Remember that you pull out the
- 28:05Speaker 3: sleeve of the CD and you'd like open it.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Up and fingerprints on it. I remember not wanting to
- 28:11Speaker 1: put fingerprints on on the cover.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Yeah, what do you mean on the actual sleeve?
- 28:18Speaker 1: Oily and from Doritos. Doritos are from Doritos. Doritos are Cheetos,
- 28:24Speaker 1: And I'm like, ah, yeah, yeah, from the Burger, Yeah,
- 28:28Speaker 1: the Burger, the Burger.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, King at the time, you know, yeah yeah yeah.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Or what about you?
- 28:35Speaker 2: You were talking about going uh Blockbuster earlier.
- 28:39Speaker 1: You were telling me about what that experience was like
- 28:41Speaker 1: for you. Yeah it was cool man. You went to
- 28:43Speaker 1: Bugbustered and you just browsed and the covers that got
- 28:47Speaker 1: the guy you. Yeah. You don't know anything about the movies, yeah,
- 28:50Speaker 1: or you heard about them. You never went to the
- 28:52Speaker 1: theaters and didn't see it, or there was a gang
- 28:55Speaker 1: of movies that these megastars were doing. They never went
- 28:57Speaker 1: to theaters. Yeah, I want to remember I watched I
- 29:01Speaker 1: walk by an Island. I was like, Bruce Willis did
- 29:04Speaker 1: this move and I was like, what, I got to
- 29:08Speaker 1: watch this, you know.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Right, And that was a rarity back then, right.
- 29:13Speaker 3: It's like those kinds of guys didn't do those those
- 29:16Speaker 3: kind of straight to video or all of their movies got.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Theatrical, you know, straight to videos and stuff.
- 29:23Speaker 1: But you walk into Blockbuster and you just browse. You
- 29:26Speaker 1: had a membership. You have those little lemonade cards that
- 29:29Speaker 1: they just made for you there, they like melted it
- 29:31Speaker 1: in front of it like a dry card with your
- 29:33Speaker 1: on the back and you so you literally went to
- 29:34Speaker 1: check him in and check them out like that. You
- 29:36Speaker 1: were like you were checking out library books. Yeah, you know.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And I just remember loving the sections, you know you
- 29:42Speaker 1: went through. Oh. I remember very clearly the day that
- 29:46Speaker 1: we went and my dad letting me rent free Willie
- 29:50Speaker 1: will I can't forget that moment. I was like, you
- 29:52Speaker 1: saw the cover and the kid is like yeah, kids
- 29:55Speaker 1: like and it's like the orchives flying over in the
- 29:59Speaker 1: waters hitting him and it's just like yeah, And I
- 30:03Speaker 1: remember I remember seeing I remember loving it so much
- 30:07Speaker 1: because Michael Jackson had the themes on to that song
- 30:10Speaker 1: we did. He really dum d oh that one that
- 30:16Speaker 1: was Yeah, that's it.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Yeah, so yo a Blockbuster. I remember it used to
- 30:22Speaker 3: be like that was like a that was like a
- 30:24Speaker 3: whole Friday night.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Man. You know when my kids were younger.
- 30:28Speaker 3: We used to we used to go there and they'd
- 30:29Speaker 3: be so excited, you know, they'd get out of school
- 30:32Speaker 3: and like, we're going to Blockbuster today.
- 30:34Speaker 1: It was like, but you remember it used to look
- 30:35Speaker 1: at the magazines like it releases on Blockbuster on this day,
- 30:38Speaker 1: and now on that day you showed up when he
- 30:40Speaker 1: was ready for renting. Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And then it became this thing where like there'd be
- 30:45Speaker 3: I don't know, it would be a major movie, be
- 30:46Speaker 3: like ten copies on the wall and you have to
- 30:49Speaker 3: get there early to.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Make sure you got copy. Yeah.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I got real cool with like the guy who worked
- 30:55Speaker 3: at Blockbuster, and I's been.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Like, come on, man, I'm coming by, Please save this
- 30:58Speaker 1: movie for me.
- 31:00Speaker 3: And he'd saved the movie for me, man, and I'd
- 31:02Speaker 3: be like, come on, some of my movies are on
- 31:04Speaker 3: the wall right now.
- 31:05Speaker 1: You know. That was cool you go hook up. Yeah,
- 31:09Speaker 1: but that'd be kind of cool. You go to Blockbuster
- 31:11Speaker 1: and you'd be like, wow, that's that's my movie. Oh yeah,
- 31:13Speaker 1: that's a moment of pride. Yeah for yeah, you're right here.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I forgot it. The first time I saw a cover
- 31:19Speaker 1: of a movie that I was a blockbuster, I was like,
- 31:22Speaker 1: my mom made it. I made the blockbuster wall. Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Little kid from that kid is like, you know, now,
- 31:31Speaker 1: when you look back at that Free Willie movie, you
- 31:35Speaker 1: realize how fake the jump of Free Willy over the
- 31:42Speaker 1: kid is, But it was so magic when you're watching
- 31:45Speaker 1: in the movies, you're like, oh my god, how did
- 31:47Speaker 1: you get an orca to jump over the barrier of
- 31:51Speaker 1: rocks and stones? And he just jumping. The little kid
- 31:54Speaker 1: is saying, no, you getting around and yeah, and he's
- 31:57Speaker 1: like and then when he goes like this, and then
- 32:00Speaker 1: the you know, the orc just flies over him and
- 32:04Speaker 1: it's like and you knew it was fake because there's
- 32:07Speaker 1: no freaking way that just like these little tiny drops
- 32:10Speaker 1: were just falling in his face and he's.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Like where the graphics I don't remember, but it was
- 32:18Speaker 3: all graphics.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Or flying over the kid's head, like there was like
- 32:22Speaker 1: a piece practical practical or flew over him. It was
- 32:26Speaker 1: just like this and it was a slow motion shot. Yeah,
- 32:29Speaker 1: but I feel like there it was a slow motion
- 32:31Speaker 1: without being slow motion, you know, like they did it
- 32:33Speaker 1: slow Yeah, we bought it that it was slow motion. Yeah.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Oh man, I gotta looked at scene up. It's very good.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I thought you were saying that it was like some
- 32:42Speaker 1: terrible like v effects. That's what I'm saying. That the
- 32:46Speaker 1: practical it's terrible. Yeah, but I got to tell you
- 32:50Speaker 1: the fact that they had and you know, it goes
- 32:53Speaker 1: back to originality, bringing in full circle to like white
- 32:55Speaker 1: movies were so magical then it's like it didn't matter, right,
- 32:59Speaker 1: Like even when you had Jim Hanson create monsters and
- 33:03Speaker 1: you could only see them from the neck up or
- 33:04Speaker 1: the shoulders up, and you never saw them walking, you know,
- 33:07Speaker 1: like you didn't care. Yeah yeah right, Leo, Okay, thank you.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Leo's playing the video back. Look at it. Look at
- 33:17Speaker 1: this part. Oh, that actually doesn't look too bad, bro,
- 33:24Speaker 1: No freaking way. The kid has time to do that
- 33:29Speaker 1: entire performance in the middle of a realistic orca over
- 33:32Speaker 1: my head, jump pay that ship back, Pay that ship back.
- 33:36Speaker 2: But it it actually doesn't like, like.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Look look bad, what is this? What is this? Look
