- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27All right, hey everybody, this is Ken Kemeny.
- 0:30I am the throws coach at Saint Charles North High School.
- 0:33I'm also the throws coordinator at the for the Illinois Track
- 0:37and Cross Country Coaches Association, and I'm the
- 0:40director of Throw Big Throw Far Chicago.
- 0:43Today we're going to be talking about educational throws
- 0:45resources. And to help me out here so I'm
- 0:49not just talking to myself and the ether, is my good buddy Dan
- 0:52McQuaid, who is the longtime throws coach at Wheaton North
- 0:56High School and also helps me out with ITCA stuff and helps
- 0:59with club stuff and does a whole ton of things.
- 1:03Dan, how we doing today? I'm doing great, thanks for
- 1:06inviting me on. This is cool.
- 1:08So Dan, I wanted to kind of talk about some different throws
- 1:11educational resources and break it up into like free stuff as
- 1:15well as and then like things that you got to pay for.
- 1:19You got a site, there's webinars, there's articles.
- 1:21Can you talk a little bit about your site?
- 1:24MC Throws mcthrows.com. Yes, my friend Roger Einbecker
- 1:28and I started mickthrows.com quite some time ago.
- 1:33I was writing for a paper publication called Long, Long
- 1:36and Strong Throwers Journal. And then when that went out of
- 1:39business around 20, maybe 2012 or something, Roger and I opened
- 1:43the site. And so we post articles about
- 1:46the throes. So I've been really lucky to to
- 1:48be able to go around and culvert track meets live.
- 1:52So I write about those things. And if you look through the past
- 1:56articles, there's there's there's articles about technique
- 1:59and training during the pandemic.
- 2:02We did a bunch of really interesting webinars with folks
- 2:05since coaches had a lot of, you know, time on their hands.
- 2:08So those are on YouTube still. And those I think are all one,
- 2:13they're kind of interesting if this is your thing and two, that
- 2:17you know, they can be instructional as well.
- 2:19So yeah, I'd like love to invite people to check out that site.
- 2:26Cool. Yeah, I know there's a lot of
- 2:28good webinars with like I think Eric Worsky was on there and
- 2:31Roger was on there and Jamaicans was on there.
- 2:35There's a lot of good stuff there.
- 2:37Speaking of of free stuff you're doing, you along with our good
- 2:42friend Joe Frontier are are podcasting.
- 2:46You've got that throw big throw for podcast that you are Co host
- 2:49with a lot you guys have done like talks about the throw time,
- 2:55Ramona, the Olympics, you've had a bunch of cool interviews.
- 2:58Any insight you want to add into that or or specific things to
- 3:01look for on that? Yeah.
- 3:03And you know, the credit for that goes completely to Joe.
- 3:06He started that podcast and he keeps going in spite of being a
- 3:09full time teacher and coach and father and husband.
- 3:12And how he does it, I don't know, but he has interviewed,
- 3:16you know, the the best throwers in the world and, and he always
- 3:19asks them for insights into how they got started and how they
- 3:23approach training and sometimes technique.
- 3:26The latest 1 he posted was with Maddie Denny and they talk about
- 3:29some of the things that Maddie does technically.
- 3:31So those are, you know, also similar to the stuff we do on
- 3:35Mick throws. I think fun and interesting for
- 3:39fans of the throws, but also useful for us coaches.
- 3:45Yeah, 100% there. Speaking of, of, of coaches and
- 3:49some of our our close friends, our buddy Jim Aikens, who was my
- 3:53high school coach and good friend of yours.
- 3:58There's there was a blog. Do you remember the blog he did
- 4:01when he started When he went from Friend High School to like,
- 4:04Burlington Central? I remember it well because he,
- 4:08he needed a really handsome younger guy to edit it and make
- 4:13sure the commas were in the right spots.
- 4:15And so I, I don't want to reveal that person's identity, but he
- 4:20found the right guy. So yes, I know those know those
- 4:23blogs very well. Yeah, so he he had built this
- 4:26sort of throws powerhouse at at Friend High School in Chicago
- 4:31area. And then he retired but moved to
- 4:33a different school to coach. And he has this blog.
- 4:38I believe you can still find it on Itka.
- 4:40And I think if you just Google Aikens on throws, it's just sort
- 4:44of like a blueprint of like how to start a throws program.
- 4:48And they were not in the best situation when he got there.
- 4:51And like three years later he had a state champ.
- 4:54So I think that's kind of must viewing.
- 4:58Speaking of must viewing, you kind of got to know like the
- 5:00Throes University guys a little bit at at Thro Town and like
- 5:03they've got a great website with a lot of free stuff as well,
- 5:06right? Yeah, Throes University is
- 5:10associated with Garage Garage strength and they are run by
- 5:14Dane Miller, who's, you know, coach and trainer and really
- 5:18interesting guy and a great guy. And yeah, they dispense a lot of
- 5:21information, a lot of it for free.
- 5:24And there's things you know you can subscribe to, but they just
- 5:29do a fantastic job of producing content about training and
- 5:33technique and, you know, just updates on the throwing world.
- 5:36I would they they are. They are a must view for us
- 5:40throws geeks. Yeah.
- 5:42And, and I knew Dane from like back in college, him and I were
- 5:45throwing together the thing that that I really enjoy.
- 5:50As I look through their stuff, I think they do a really good job
- 5:53of sort of programming the throws with the gym stuff with
- 5:59the, you know, the weight room and the jumps and everything.
- 6:02And, and if you check their stuff out that you know, stuff
- 6:04that they have posted for free, they give you a lot of
- 6:07information on that. Yeah, and one big difference
- 6:10between the stuff that Dane posts and stuff that Roger and I
- 6:13post is Roger and I keep our shirts on.
- 6:15So you don't have to be worried about that, Dane.
- 6:19Well, we're all disappointed we're all this and and so Throws
- 6:26University does also offer like some premium stuff that that you
- 6:30got to pay for. So everything that we've
- 6:32discussed so far has been free. But now getting into stuff that
- 6:35is not super expensive, but you might throw a few bucks at our
- 6:39buddy Scott Kappos. He's part of the Throwrex site.
- 6:44More on that in a second, but his his mentor wrote a great
- 6:49throws book back in the day, George Dunn, I believe the
- 6:51throws manual and a couple of weeks ago Scott came out with
- 6:56the shot put in discus throw coach's manual that I think is
- 6:59just an awesome book. You can get it on his site
- 7:01Throws Pro for about 40 bucks or so.
- 7:05Great book there. Yeah, it's excellent.
- 7:10But then our our buddy Scott Capos and Joe Frontier and Ryan
- 7:17Whiting, they they work together for thrower X, which I'm not
- 7:24sure how much you've checked out Dan, but it it's a a great site
- 7:27that gives you everything you need to know for a thrower or a
- 7:32throws coach. There's drill progressions for
- 7:37glide, spin, hammer, discus, weight throw.
- 7:43I believe there's javelin stuff on there.
- 7:46Great stuff for coaches and for for athletes.
- 7:53Another thing that that I think is a is a good educational
- 7:57resource for for coaches to check out.
- 8:00That again is not in the in the free tier.
- 8:03There's so many good clinics around here.
- 8:06Dan, you and I helped put together the the and coordinate
- 8:11the throws presentations at ITGA, the Illinois Track and
- 8:14Cross Country Coaches Association.
- 8:17We've had some awesome, awesome sessions the last few years.
- 8:22Yeah. And I, you know, I think if, if
- 8:24I can pat us both on the back, I think we've done a nice job of
- 8:28having big name throws coaches. You know, we had back Wilkins
- 8:32there last year and and and also, you know, more high school
- 8:38level coaches like we had Josh Freeman and new coaches that
- 8:46carry grow, you know, in our in our neck of the woods.
- 8:49So guys that are guys and gals that are hands on with the high
- 8:52school kids and also, you know, the higher level coaches.
- 8:54Nice balance I think for us and they've done a also a fantastic
- 9:00job in Wisconsin if you're in the Midwest they're they're
- 9:03coaches clinic in Madison every year out fantastic and then
- 9:07there's one in what's where what town is Mark Harsh is in in
- 9:12Indiana it's. Portage.
- 9:14Portage IN, so also really close to the Chicago area.
- 9:17Those guys have done clinics and camps and so.
- 9:20So, at least in our neck of the woods, those are three solid
- 9:23options for folks. Yeah.
- 9:26And I, I think along with those clinics, one thing that I've
- 9:30noticed is is throws coaches, you know, it, it's not all
- 9:34glamour and limousines and private jets and you know,
- 9:37champagne, like we're usually pretty down to earth guys.
- 9:41And if if you just reach out to a coach, usually though they
- 9:45will be pretty generous with their their time and their their
- 9:50expertise. Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:52And I, you know, I think in, in looking back on my career, I
- 9:55think the most important thing for me this besides going to
- 9:59clinics and all the things we talked about is, is developing
- 10:02relationships with some fellow throws coaches.
- 10:05Like, you know, Jim and I had a, a great coaching, you know,
- 10:09relationship for, for many years where, you know, I could send
- 10:12him video or just take him aside and show him a video.
- 10:16Done that with, you know, Roger Reinbecker.
- 10:19There was Bob Niles for a long time at, at Lake Park and my
- 10:23friend Sean Schleiser at different schools.
- 10:25But so I've been really lucky, you know, for many years to have
- 10:28those, those kind of, you know, compatriots and, and I and I, I
- 10:33don't think that's unusual. I think most of us, you know,
- 10:37really enjoy talking about the sport and technique and are
- 10:40always happy to, to do that with other coaches.
- 10:44So if you're a young coach just starting out, don't, don't be
- 10:46afraid to do that. The you know the the most of the
- 10:49people that are doing well at this are really good people and
- 10:52would be happy to to be to assist you.
- 10:56Yeah. And kind of along those lines,
- 11:00last year we started with with the help of Joe Frontier that
- 11:04throw big throw for Chicago in in the burbs here.
- 11:08And we've had a lot of coaches just come by and and hang out
- 11:12and watch. And if you want to come check
- 11:16out our, our club, you can, you can check out our website,
- 11:20throwbigthrowfar.com. And then that'll take you to
- 11:23some registration where you can find where everything, the times
- 11:28and the dates and locations and everything.
- 11:30But you show up and, and, and hang out and watch and we'll
- 11:33probably put you to work. But it's, it's all good and we
- 11:37have a good time there. We also have clubs in Madison
- 11:41run by Joe Frontier. There's, there's a Milwaukee
- 11:44club, there's a central Illinois club, there's a central
- 11:47Wisconsin club. So those are all educational
- 11:50resources worth, worth checking out.
- 11:52Also, any final thoughts, Dan? There's a lot of information out
- 11:58there and you know, some of it you'll come across and you, you
- 12:01won't, you know, you just won't have any use for you might go to
- 12:03a clinic and say, oh, that was a crappy clinic that was a waste
- 12:05of time. But keep, keep going because
- 12:07there you will have some experiences.
- 12:10You, you'll read a, an article or you'll go to a clinic or
- 12:13you'll, you'll have a conversation with a fellow coach
- 12:15that'll really make a difference to you.
- 12:17And so I encourage you to just stay out there, stay curious,
- 12:21and keep reaching out to folks. All right.
- 12:24It's cool. I think that does it.
- 12:26Again, we're just covering educational resources for
- 12:29coaches. I'm Ken Kennedy.
- 12:31That's Dan McQuaid. Thank you guys.
