Latest / National Immigration Law Center Freedom to Thrive Podcast / Ep. #113 Our Community is Strong and Resilient
Transcript
- 0:00Our podcast took a month off from production, and we're returning in the midst
- 0:04of a nation in full-blown crisis.
- 0:07And not just for immigrants' rights, but for all of our rights.
- 0:10For those of us in LA, the year started out with horrific fires that decimated
- 0:15entire communities, including a historically Black neighborhood in Altadena.
- 0:21It was devastating to experience this climate catastrophe for all of us in Los Angeles County.
- 0:27We had power outages, water shortages, toxic air,
- 0:32blaring emergency alerts that rattled our nerves, and our normally blue California
- 0:37skies were painted brown with dark, heavy clouds that rained ash for days.
- 0:42And in all this destruction, when things felt so helpless to so many of us,
- 0:47I witnessed the beauty of solidarity and collective action.
- 0:50From the raging flames emerged the power of community.
- 0:54Hundreds, maybe thousands of people showed up in support, bringing water,
- 0:59food, clothes, money, masks, music, you name it.
- 1:03There were spreadsheets organizing everything, even tracking landlords and businesses
- 1:09that were trying to price gouge and profit off of people's pain and loss.
- 1:13The community looked out for the community.
- 1:17And of course, because it's Los Angeles, or El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora La Reina
- 1:22de Los Angeles, to be precise,
- 1:24The most beautiful thing of all was seeing that so many of these efforts were
- 1:28being spearheaded by immigrants and women, people of color.
- 1:32Nobody was waiting around for FEMA. El pueblo came together. We were our own FEMA.
- 1:38It was truly the best of humanity at work. And now we're here as a nation witnessing
- 1:43perhaps the worst of humanity.
- 1:46Hard at work dismantling our freedoms and eroding our shared rights and values as Americans.
- 1:52Immigrants' rights, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, abortion rights,
- 1:58our human, civil, and constitutional rights that have been hard fought and won
- 2:04over decades by historically marginalized communities.
- 2:08Our very liberty and democracy are under attack.
- 2:11And our country is now in the hands of destructive extremists who have little
- 2:16regard for the Constitution or the rule of law.
- 2:19And they're doing harm at an astonishing pace. I've struggled with what to say about this.
- 2:25Many of us saw this coming, but that doesn't really help, does it?
- 2:29And I'm sure there's a lot of people looking around wondering,
- 2:32is this really happening? This can't be happening.
- 2:35But it is. And the road to this new American fascism was constructed and continues
- 2:42to be built on the backs of immigrants.
- 2:45If you'll recall, the 2024 presidential election that brought us here was all
- 2:49about immigrants and immigration.
- 2:52For eight years, immigrants were relentlessly scapegoated and dehumanized and
- 2:58unjustly accused of horrible things.
- 3:01That pattern continues now with implications for all of us.
- 3:05The Lake and Riley legislation, for example, recently signed into law,
- 3:10strips away due process for immigrants.
- 3:13So an immigrant can now be accused of a crime or suspected of a crime,
- 3:18like shoplifting, for example, and that alone is enough to detain them indefinitely
- 3:22and without due process. I want to say that again.
- 3:27Immigrants can now just be accused of
- 3:30a crime and that alone is enough
- 3:33to lock them up and throw away the key anyone cheering
- 3:37for this doesn't seem to understand or maybe doesn't
- 3:40care that this doesn't make us safer as the country on the contrary it weakens
- 3:45the very foundation upon which our entire justice system was built the right
- 3:50to due process this makes all of us vulnerable and places us on a really dangerous
- 3:56slippery slope. Here's another example.
- 3:59Guantanamo Bay will now be used as a detention camp for 30,000 immigrants.
- 4:05And now we're talking about shipping not only immigrants, but U.S.
- 4:10Citizens to El Salvador to be held in Salvadoran prisons that are known for
- 4:16their human rights abuses.
- 4:17This, of course, is on top of the executive orders issued on day one of the
- 4:22new administration, targeting immigrants.
- 4:25These orders seek to do a number of things, so many that I can't name them all,
- 4:29but they include things like stripping away birthright citizenship,
- 4:34expanding mass detention.
- 4:37Declaring a national emergency at the border, and hence at invoking the Alien
- 4:42Enemies Act and the Insurrection Act, which would give sweeping wartime powers to the president.
- 4:49Expand expedited removals of immigrants—,
- 4:52delegate immigration authority to local law enforcement, punish sanctuary cities,
- 4:58threaten to penalize individuals and organizations that help immigrant communities.
- 5:03They order the Department of Homeland Security to expand the list of banned
- 5:08countries so that individuals traveling from these countries will not be allowed entry to the U.S.
- 5:14They end humanitarian protections for people fleeing violence and seeking safety
- 5:19in the U.S. They closed the door to asylum seekers, people fleeing dangerous conditions.
- 5:25This is a lot, and that's not even the half of it. And of course,
- 5:29I can't leave out ICE, or Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
- 5:33which has been terrorizing communities across the country for the last two weeks.
- 5:38This is a moment in our history when we're all being called to mobilize.
- 5:42And this fight isn't only for immigrants. We all have a role to play.
- 5:46So this is what we're going to do on the NILC Freedom to Thrive podcast.
- 5:51In addition to having amazing guests who are culture makers,
- 5:55moving forward, we're going to do the following.
- 5:57We're going to share resources and information that you can use and share and act on.
- 6:02My brilliant National Immigration Law Center colleagues will be joining us to
- 6:06share legal analysis, insight, and information.
- 6:09We're going to break down what's happening in this country and be more timely
- 6:13with our discussions. and we'll be highlighting the voices of those in the community
- 6:17who are coming together to fight for our rights.
- 6:20More than that, we're going to hold on to our shared humanity because as I've
- 6:25said before, when we allow for the dehumanization of a people, atrocities follow.
- 6:31And we're seeing this play out in real time, will amplify the voices that have
- 6:36been historically marginalized and silenced and showcase our resilience,
- 6:40our power, and our resistance.
- 6:42And I want to say something about resistance.
- 6:45Resistance comes in many forms, not the least of which is joy.
- 6:50As the poet J. Drew Lanham said, joy is the justice we give ourselves.
- 6:55In times of oppression, love is a revolutionary act of resistance too.
- 7:01And creativity is resistance.
- 7:04Music, dance, poetry, art, writing.
- 7:07These have all always played a role in resistance movements and we need those things too.
- 7:13This is a moment for artists and culture makers.
- 7:17So we're going to continue to have those guests and those conversations as well.
- 7:22And I'll close with this.
- 7:24Democracy is not a spectator sport. That is a quote attributed to Lottie Scharfman,
- 7:29a refugee who escaped with her family from Austria during World War II.
- 7:34This moment in this historical timeline that we're living under is a moment
- 7:39that's calling on all of us to get involved in protecting and preserving our democracy.
- 7:44It's a moment that's calling on us to be in community and stand up for our rights.
- 7:49Observing from the sidelines won't be an option if we want to save our country.
- 7:55Those in power seeking to dismantle our democracy won't concede our freedom
- 8:00and our rights and our liberty unless we demand it.
- 8:03I hope you'll stay with us and continue listening to this podcast.
- 8:07I hope you'll stand with us as we fight for and demand our rights.
- 8:11And I hope that you'll be inspired and find moments of joy and love and community for yourself as well.
- 8:18Thank you for listening and for standing in power with us as we enter the fight of our lives.
