- 0:00[ on-hold music] Welcome back to The Most Important Question today, where in just a couple minutes or less, we apply the Actually Pro-Life Principles to a news headline, and then help you answer the most important question, "What can I do?"
- 0:18[ on-hold music] In the US, if your kid has a disability, your public school district has to offer to educate them. That's been the federal law since nineteen seventy-five.
- 0:35What the district owes you is a place and a plan. So they offer it, and if you turn it down and go private, they've done their job. They're out. That's the whole obligation. Florida... I know.
- 0:47Florida made a special scholarship for kids with disabilities, public money for a private school. And the Florida law that creates that scholarship has this sentence in it.
- 0:55"The district school board is not obligated to provide the student with a free, appropriate public education." So the scholarship is Florida paying you to let your district off the hook, basically.
- 1:06But of course, obviously, a private school doesn't have to take your kid. In nineteen seventy-five, Congress said kids like these were, quote, "excluded entirely from the public school system." We fixed that.
- 1:17It still holds. It just doesn't come with you when you say no. Every kid deserves a real education.
- 1:26If somebody's selling school choice to a parent whose kid needs real help at school, tell them to give the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates a call, just to be safe. [ on-hold music] Thanks for listening.
