Transcript
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: It's the last AM to catch them in the lobby.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Take it's definitely for 15 minutes.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And kids pastors' families over in the band worship leader has a trailer half loaded already.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: 70 minutes later, you're still talking about Christmas and a volunteer who did not show and a thought you had during the third song.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: They cannot leave without looking uncommitted.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: You ever find yourself in this situation?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about that today here on the Healthy Church Staff Podcast.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Hi there, my name is Todd Rhodes, one of the co-founders over at chemistry staffing.com.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And I'm so glad you're here today.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Now, today we're not going to be talking about responsibilities and working on Sunday, because Sunday is the job when you're in church ministry.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: It always has been, it always will be.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: This is about the meeting that you start after the job was supposed to be over.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: When the spouse has already been there all morning, the kids are hungry, the teenager has a game after lunch, and your staffer is on a folding chair because you said, Hey, can we grab some time together for the next 15 minutes?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You didn't put that on the calendar.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: You did not name an end time while the family is still out in the van waiting on the husband to be done with the meeting so they can go home and grab dinner.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: You grabbed whoever was still in the building, and that's not a huddle, that's a hold.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And your staff knows the difference.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And those people in the van, especially the spouse's wife or the staff person's wife, in this instance, they know the difference as well.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And it keeps happening, maybe because it's just easy for you.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Now you might not do this all the time, but have you ever called a debrief after service?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And the debrief goes long and you know that there's families waiting on you?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: That's what we're talking about today.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: You've already got the room, you've already got the people, you already have the thought.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So you use the last service like a staff meeting invite.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: It's not on the calendar, there's no child care plan, there's no chance to say no, really, without looking like they don't care.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Uh, and the part-time part-time kids director just worked six hours on Sunday and they're part-time, and you added an hour, she just can't bill.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, the worship leaders' day just grew again, and you won't see that on a timesheet.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: You will see it on their face when you say real quick though, if you look really closely.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Now listen, I know why you do it.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And I know your heart.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: The morning's still hot, you saw three things you don't want to lose.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Catching them in the lobby seems a lot faster than doing another Tuesday morning meeting.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And that that is a decent idea and a decent thought.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But it's also how you turn the end of worship into unpaid staff time that they cannot refuse.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Being fresh in your mind is not a reason to hold people's families hostage in the parking lot.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And if it matters, it can live on a calendar.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So you can still debrief Sunday, you can still, but you cannot keep stealing the hour after it on Sunday morning.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: The real meeting has a start, a real meeting has an end time.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: A real meeting is on the week before anyone loads the van.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: So 15 minutes is the tell here.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Fifteen minutes is never ever 15 minutes.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: You said that sentence, you've broken that, you've broken that sentence and that promise.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Everyone in the chair has a clock in their hand, and they're counting the cost of looking faithful.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: That first 20 minutes might have been useful.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: The next 40 is you just thinking out loud.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: They are not collaborating, they are trapped.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: They're thinking, how in the world do I get out to the van?
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: How in the world do I explain this to my wife again?
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And the staffer with the youngest kids always seems to have to stay the latest.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Because leaving first has a story attached to it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: You didn't write that rule, the lobby wrote that rule.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So stop using the lobby as your calendar, okay?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Put it on the week, okay?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Or let them go home.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: If you need the staff to stay after the service, say it by Wednesday.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Put it on the calendar, name the end time, name who's actually required, not anyone who can stay.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: That sense always sentence always lands on the same three people.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And if you can't put it on the calendar, it's not a meeting, it's a drive-by.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Let them go home.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: They've already put in their time.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: You've already put in all the paid time on Sunday.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Send those three thoughts in an email.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Or save the rest for Tuesday.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Get out your phone and write yourself a note.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: These are the three things that I want to discuss.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: I don't want to lose these.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: If you will not calendar it, you already named the plan and you will grab them in the lobby again, and their family will wait again.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: So here's your bottom line.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And I realize this might not apply to a lot of people, but I was on staff at three different churches, and there were a lot of times we got called to deep's or meetings right after those just 15 minutes, let's just meet real quick.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And the pastors didn't have kids waiting on them.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I had four kids waiting out of their van and a wife that was ready to get home and probably something in the crock pot.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: So here's the bottom line for today.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: A meeting after the last service is not just a huddle.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: It's unpaid staff time that you never really put on the calendar.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: So this week I want you to do something uncomfortable.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: If you feel like you need to have any time with staff after the last service, and you might, just put it on your calendar, put it on their calendar by Wednesday, and give it an end time.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: If it's 15 minutes, say we're gonna be done by it starts at 1130, we're done at 1145.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: If you can't do this, then just let them go home this week.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Now I know this one maybe feels like I'm taking away maybe some of the only time when you can catch everyone.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: That's why it's easy to do because everyone's there, everyone's in the building.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And you feel like, hey, what's Sunday?
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: I'm paying for their time.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: But I'm asking you to stop using their families as the waiting room, okay?
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Also know that you actually want a staff that can finish Sunday and go home and feel refreshed and feel like this was a good day in the house of the Lord rather than I just got trapped into an hour meeting after the service.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: That'll make for a much happier staff and a much healthier staff.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: That's it for today.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I hope you've enjoyed today's episode.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: If you're the one that's calling the 15 minutes, maybe you didn't enjoy today's episode, but that's okay.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe you'll enjoy tomorrow's.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: I hope you'll be back tomorrow.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: We're here every weekday on the Healthy Church Death Podcast.
