- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Friday January 9, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Canberra where the Prime Minister orders a royal commission into antisemitism... following the Bondi Beach mass shooting. The inquiry looks at how hatred towards Jewish Australians builds... and how it spills into violence. It examines universities, online platforms, workplaces and political debate. Victims’ families and Jewish community leaders say they want answers... and guarantees this doesn’t happen again. For Australians, this goes to social cohesion... and how well our laws and institutions protect minorities... while still safeguarding free speech. — — [serious] In Victoria... authorities warn the state is at serious risk of a bushfire disaster. Two major blazes burn out of control... and residents in several communities start evacuating their homes. Parks Victoria closes all public land... and the extreme heat forces V/Line to cancel dozens of regional train services. Paramedics take the unusual step of changing how they operate in the heat... to keep up with a surge in call-outs. People in fire-prone areas are told to have a clear plan... stay across alerts... and be ready to leave early. — — [serious] Still in Victoria... extreme weather disrupts parts of the justice system. Several magistrates’ courts... including Castlemaine, Myrtleford and Seymour... move all hearings online for Friday because of the conditions. Anyone who can’t log in has their case automatically adjourned. It’s another reminder of how heatwaves and fire weather don’t just affect power and transport... they also hit basic services like courts... especially in regional towns. — — [serious] To the economy now... and a sharp rethink on interest rates. Markets that once priced in cuts for 2026... now expect the Reserve Bank may have to hike instead. Stronger-than-expected inflation and a tight jobs market are shifting expectations. That means higher mortgage pain could still be ahead... just as many fixed-rate loans already roll off. For households and small businesses... the message is clear... don’t bank on cheaper money this year. Budgeting for the possibility of further rate rises is back on the table. — — [curious] Back to Sydney... where fallout from the Bondi terror attack continues. One survivor reveals her name was changed in hospital records... to shield her from intense media attention. It shows how front-line staff now juggle trauma care... security concerns... and privacy pressures in real time. The story raises questions about how victims of major attacks are protected... and how far hospitals should go to keep them out of the spotlight... while still keeping families informed. — — [urgent] Overseas in the United States... political and economic uncertainty keeps global markets on edge. Investors weigh the risk of further rate moves by the US Federal Reserve... and what that means for growth. For Australia... any renewed volatility in US markets can hit our dollar... super funds... and export demand. It’s a reminder that even when our own economy feels relatively steady... shocks in Washington and on Wall Street travel quickly to Australian households. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
