- 0:03Speaker 1: We're back.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It's the Craigway Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster and
- 0:07voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We had just started to get into talking about injured
- 0:19guys and the injury report, which brings us, as it
- 0:22does every Thursday at this time, to our DJC Law
- 0:29Injury Update for you and brought to you by DJC Law.
- 0:34So here it is the official Texas injury report. The
- 0:40ones we knew that were definitely going to be out CJ.
- 0:43Baxter and Christian Clark also Velton Gardner out and so
- 0:47that's three running backs out. Colin Page the walk on
- 0:52from Anderson remains questionable for this game. Tatea have backup
- 0:58the safety listed as question well, and Michael Kern the
- 1:01punter listed as questionable. He said, well, what happens, you know,
- 1:06if the long Words have to punt, it would be
- 1:09the sophomore walk on, Ian Ratliffe, who would then step
- 1:12in the punt if that is the case. So we'll
- 1:14find houtly long Wrns don't have to punt, you know,
- 1:16that would be nice if it went that way. And
- 1:18then of course the two big notes, quin Ewers and
- 1:21Derrick Williams. As we mentioned last segment, both listed as
- 1:24probable and Sark is expecting both guys to be able
- 1:28to play tomorrow for Oklahoma. As we pointed out, all
- 1:32of these guys were definitely out. Wide receivers Jaden Gibson,
- 1:35Jealo Ferru, Nick Anderson, and Andrew Anthony all definitely out.
- 1:40Also out defensive backs Gentry Williams and Kendall Dobie Adobe,
- 1:46offensive lineman Jerian Hatchett, and then listed as questionable tight
- 1:51end Kate McIntyre, and wide receiver Dion Burks. But as
- 1:55we mentioned, Pete Damil of ESPN reported today that he
- 2:02that he is learning that Burke's is going to be out.
- 2:06So really, what you're talking about in terms of available receivers,
- 2:10the senior who started off his collegiate career Missouri JJ
- 2:14Hester would be really the most experienced of those. Then
- 2:20you have Brendon Thompson, the former long worn is a
- 2:22junior now, and then you would have the sophomore Jique's Peedaway,
- 2:30and then you've got freshmen like Zion Kearney and Zion
- 2:33Reagan's a couple of freshmen there. So they have been
- 2:37hit pretty hard at the receiver position, which if you
- 2:42take away some of the playmaking receiving guys and the
- 2:48running game has been a struggle there. Rushing attack right
- 2:52now is ranked one hundredth in the NCAA statistically. So
- 2:59if if they are limiting guys like Javonte Barnes and
- 3:02Taylor Tatum and Gavin Sawchuk and Sam Franklin those guys,
- 3:06it does put more pressure on the freshman on the quarterback,
- 3:10on Michael Hawkins, even though he is mobile, even though
- 3:14he can be a danger in terms of trying to defend,
- 3:18but if he has fewer weapons to work with, then
- 3:23A you don't necessarily need to have anybody spy him,
- 3:26and b they can kind of lock down on him
- 3:29and try to go after him and enforce problems. So
- 3:31that's that would be the biggest issues certainly for Oklahoma
- 3:35as they try to get through the injury. But as
- 3:38we mentioned the Texas injury report, nothing really shocking there,
- 3:42and the most encouraging news out of all of that
- 3:45is that when you Weers and Derek Williams are expected
- 3:47to be available, and that's our DJC law injury update. Okay,
- 3:53a couple other things to get to with regard to
- 3:57college football, and we were talking about Michael Hawkins one
- 4:01way or another, you know, just one way or another, good, bad, indifferent,
- 4:09however however you choose to describe it. Michael Hawkins Junior
- 4:17is going to make history this weekend. We heard Toby
- 4:22Rowland talk about this that he will make history as Hawkins,
- 4:28in just his second career start, will be the first
- 4:34ever true freshman to start at quarterback in the Red
- 4:39River rivalry. So now we've seen another guy. We saw
- 4:43Caleb Williams step and he didn't start that game. Spencer
- 4:46Ratler did, but and Caleb Williams obviously made a difference.
- 4:51And that was before he ended up transferring to USC
- 4:53and now he's playing his trade the NFL with the
- 4:54Chicago Bears. But this will be the first time a
- 4:57true freshman has ever started this. It's sort of interesting
- 5:02because he's a Metroplex kid. He grew up in the
- 5:03Dallas forward there and played at Friscoe Emerson, a team
- 5:07that reached the Final four surprisingly a year ago. And
- 5:10he's really good. But this is different. As we know,
- 5:16this game is different. There's there's a lot that's different
- 5:19about it and it could be unnerving to some. He's
- 5:26he's always struck me when I saw his highlights and
- 5:30followed his career into high school and the interviews we
- 5:33had on the television show with coach Kendall Miller as
- 5:36head coach, and when they've talked about him, is that
- 5:38he's just been really calm and yet focused. And what
- 5:46was it when we had Cale Gundhy on darning the
- 5:48way Cale knew his dad recruited his father who played
- 5:50at Oklahoma and said he was one of those really focused,
- 5:53driven guys. And probably the apple is not rolled far
- 5:58from the tree here, So gonna be interesting to see
- 6:01how he how he operates in this environment. That that's
- 6:07that's gonna be an awful lot of fun to see
- 6:09how this, you know, how this all rolls down. Can
- 6:13they can he be a factor in this to help
- 6:19this Oklahoma offense get moving against this long horn defense.
- 6:23And they've seen plenty of things and they know that
- 6:28Texas comes in number one and how good the Longhorns are.
- 6:30I did see some sound bites this weekend of Oklahoma
- 6:33players like Danny Stutsman some of the other ones going
- 6:36it doesn't matter what they rang, this is Texas O
- 6:39you when we had the SoundBite from David Benda saying
- 6:42it doesn't matter, that's the whatever fourteen and a half
- 6:44point spreads this that whatever. I haven't checked the Lions.
- 6:47It's still sitting on fourteen and a half at last year.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Do not know, but I'm guessing it's got to be
- 6:52pretty close.
- 6:54Speaker 1: So but they've all said the same thing. It doesn't
- 6:58really matter. It just it doesn't make a difference.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Still, fourteen and a half has not changed at all.
- 7:05Speaker 1: That's kind of weird that there's been zero movement on that.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I think a lot of people just don't know what
- 7:11to do here. They're thinking, Okay, it's it's a rivalry game.
- 7:14It does not matter what the rankings are, what the
- 7:16spread is. But then there's also some people are looking
- 7:19at Oklahoma so banged up right now going into this game,
- 7:22a true freshman quarterback versus the Texas team that's five
- 7:25and zho and number one. So there's probably a little
- 7:27bit of wagering on both sides here trying to figure
- 7:30out what to do because all the analytics, I think
- 7:32Texas is going to win this game by two touchdowns.
- 7:34But then there's this, you've got a factor in that
- 7:36none that actually matters when it's a game like this.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one. That's the one area of shortcoming in
- 7:45the computer is the computer cannot gauge the emotional impact
- 7:52on this game. I don't know. We've heard all the
- 7:55phrases like what Rudy Tom Johnovan, never underestimate the heart
- 7:58of a champion, you know that the whole bit, or
- 8:00don't underestimate the emotion this game engenders. There was a
- 8:05lot made of Danny Stutsman with the emotional address he
- 8:10had to his teammates before the game about what had
- 8:13happened the year before and forty nine and nothing and
- 8:15that's not us and let's show what we can do.
- 8:18Don't you think there'll be some Longhorns who have similar
- 8:20things to say, especially the ones who are fourth year seniors,
- 8:24fifth year senior, sixt year seniors. We were saying, don't
- 8:27let this, don't let a loss be your last moment
- 8:32to this group as a longhorn. So I imagine there's
- 8:35going to be that did say on Long Worn Weekly
- 8:37that we recorded last night and again you'll be able
- 8:39here tonight at seven o'clock that he's been really proud
- 8:45of the approach that his guys have taken throughout the
- 8:49course of the week in practice, that they have not
- 8:52allowed the outside noise and attention and excitement and all
- 8:58of those things to permeate within their walls and affect
- 9:03what they've had to do. He said, They've they've gone
- 9:06about their business in a really good fashion, and that's
- 9:09been pretty impressive for him to see. All Right, coming up,
- 9:13we'll talk about one other. There's another kind of a
- 9:17big deal college football game other than Texas o you
- 9:20this weekend, So we'll get to that coming up and
- 9:24more when we continue on this Thursday afternoon here on
- 9:27Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone and where you can
- 9:29always listen to us for free right here on the
- 9:32iHeartRadio app.
