- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen knife for doing.
- 0:35Quicker, quicker. Quicker Welcome back to Hamster
- 0:41with a blunt pen knife for Doctor Who.
- 0:43Podcast, Commentary podcast commentary commentary podcast.
- 0:46Who knows? I am Dylan.
- 0:48I'm not the host and I'm here with two other people.
- 0:51We've got our normal host. Joe, are you there?
- 0:54I'm here. Hello.
- 0:55And of course, we've got the irreplaceable Luke Malloy.
- 0:59Hello, Howdy. And we're back for another day
- 1:03of the moon. I'm.
- 1:05In the unenviable position you like.
- 1:08Because usually I maneuver myself into the position where
- 1:10I'm staring at someone extremely sexy on a zoom call when I'll do
- 1:14these Doctor Who commentary podcasts.
- 1:16And today I've got two equally sexy people in front of me.
- 1:20It's a tough night, I'll tell you.
- 1:22It's it's it's a hard it's a hard one, isn't it?
- 1:26Joe, look, my hands are here. Okay.
- 1:29And look, can I tell you about something that might stun you
- 1:31rigid about Day of the Moon? Please do it.
- 1:34Make me as rigid as you want. Bored Bridget, usually.
- 1:38I think this is a particularly good Stephen Moffett episode.
- 1:42I think this is fantastic. Issues with this two parter is
- 1:50in the first part and and those issues that I've discussed
- 1:53before, well, I actually think this works a lot better.
- 1:57I know there's a lot of mysteries unsolved at the end,
- 1:59but as an hour of television on its own, I think this has got
- 2:06everything I want. It's got brilliant scares in it.
- 2:08It's got alien invasion in it, it's got clever twists and turns
- 2:12in it. It looks fucking gorgeous, but I
- 2:15think this is terrific stuff. It's a belt in an episode and.
- 2:19You're just going to hear that, did you?
- 2:21Yeah. No, it didn't.
- 2:22But you're right. Everything you said was so
- 2:24right. I have a habit of being right.
- 2:30Here now you guys talk amongst yourselves for a moment.
- 2:32My DVD players gone to sleep so because I'm watching this in an
- 2:37old format, but you you guys just chat.
- 2:41You come here from Luke. What to 1969 in America?
- 2:45And I'll buy you a drink. Any of you get a fizzy straw?
- 2:48Oh well, do. You know what?
- 2:49I'm going to try a chat outline on you.
- 2:51You're ready? Yeah.
- 2:53Yeah, that OK. It's alright for me to do this
- 2:56first. I better ask for consent because
- 2:57people might come at me. So.
- 3:02I must say, that blue shirt looks very becoming on you.
- 3:05Why don't you take it off and put me on and then I'll be
- 3:07coming on you. Well, for me, once that did.
- 3:12It's worked twice now. You're in the right place yet,
- 3:18Dylan. Jeez, we're gonna.
- 3:19No, I'm just watching the two entertained logo come up.
- 3:22Did you say jeez the jeez. The what?
- 3:25Doesn't bother. The BBC logo's coming up now.
- 3:31Sorry guys. I'll ask you both a question.
- 3:33Do you think people come to this podcast now expecting smart?
- 3:36Yes, absolutely. ID.
- 3:38Are you just pointed? If it's I'm with a guest and
- 3:41it's just funny. They know because you bring it
- 3:43out of everyone. You've even got Toby.
- 3:47Can you hear him in that about going down?
- 3:49Can you do some things? Honestly, Fraser Gregory, he
- 3:55used to say stop it to me all the time.
- 3:57Now he's the one encouraging this stuff.
- 3:59You've got a knack. You just seem to pull it out.
- 4:03I am not. And to quote on the time, Ash
- 4:05pulling it out is what got John Barrow in trouble.
- 4:11I always had consent the beginning of the zoom call where
- 4:14it says of your consent. You guys, you guys in the T's
- 4:20and C's? How you doing there, Dylan?
- 4:23I'm due to be cancelled any minute.
- 4:25All these bloody menus right on there.
- 4:29I put the disk to Quantum of Solace in the other day and
- 4:34there was 3 movie trailers at the beginning that you couldn't
- 4:37Fast forward like Stranger Than Fiction.
- 4:41The Day the Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reeves and I can't
- 4:44remember the third one, but I missed the days.
- 4:47Of DVD movie trailers. Or you'd wake up in the middle
- 4:50of the night having fallen asleep watching a movie, and the
- 4:52menu had just been on repeat, and repeat and repeat for hours.
- 4:55Remember when you couldn't Fast forward them and you had to
- 4:57watch these bloody trailers? Yeah, it's actually gonna.
- 5:01Cry. Now though, you have to sit
- 5:03there for half hour watching trailers before I I'm eating all
- 5:07my bloody popcorn. And this the size of a planet.
- 5:09Yeah, all the films, even. Style.
- 5:11Yeah, you gotta get through the popcorn.
- 5:13I'm more of a nachos guy myself, but I always get through
- 5:15enjoying. The strike rates, and you can.
- 5:22I saw a picture of him the other day with no hat on.
- 5:25I was utterly convinced it wasn't.
- 5:29It Ben from On the Time Lash We were at the Doctor Who
- 5:32convention and in London, and I ordered What was it?
- 5:38Like a brioche bun or something as part of my lunch.
- 5:41And he went, that's the most London thing I've ever seen.
- 5:44Anybody. I'll have a brioche.
- 5:52Sorry, I was going to bring a slightly back on topic, so if
- 5:56you want to stay off, please go ahead.
- 5:59I was going to say do you remember like watching The
- 6:02Impossible Day of the Moon for the first time?
- 6:03Because weirdly, I don't usually have a really good place in.
- 6:07Where I was, especially with openers and stuff, but I've got
- 6:10nothing, so please enlighten me where you were.
- 6:13I remember watching it, as I said on the last episode, all my
- 6:16mates were suddenly into this series of Doctor Who in a way
- 6:18that they weren't before. And I remember sitting in our
- 6:21house in Finsbury Park, where we lived at the time, just gathered
- 6:25around the TV having a few beers on a Saturday night watching it.
- 6:28And it was the IT was a very strange time in my life because
- 6:31all my mates like not fucking Doctor Who again and like.
- 6:34Good F. I was sitting in the flat that I
- 6:40owned with the man that I married.
- 6:42So my last moved on a bit since then because I'm rented and not
- 6:45married anymore. And I remember getting to the
- 6:49end of Impossible Astronaut and being a bit baffled and
- 6:52underwhelmed and then watching Day of the Moon and being really
- 6:55impressed and say right, I'm geared up for the season now
- 6:57let's go. And then a black spot was next
- 7:00week and then the gang of two parts.
- 7:03This is what's going on. Oh, no, It's a doctor's wife
- 7:06after that. It is, yeah, very up and down
- 7:09this. All all very dark, as you said,
- 7:12yeah. The only memory I have after
- 7:13this of this is and I was probably should have said it for
- 7:18the end. But you know the end when this
- 7:20little kid in New York and she regenerates and you know the
- 7:24doctor he found brain is on. So I was out with my next door
- 7:28neighbor who was a normal person and I'm out and I'm a doctor he
- 7:31fan and she's going with that girl is is with a song, isn't
- 7:35it? I'm like, don't be silly, it's
- 7:37Susan. Susan, it's the Ronnie.
- 7:42But I was convinced that even though you know, you look back
- 7:45and go, it doesn't make any logical sense in any way.
- 7:49Imagine that drops. That was Susan in this episode.
- 7:52The Internet would have gone into meltdown.
- 7:54I was just like, you're stupid, of course not every song, Susan.
- 7:59I'm so thick, right? It took until they were looking
- 8:03at that hand stitching the apartment that says what is it?
- 8:06Melody Pond. Well, it's just it's just
- 8:09something. But literally, it was like 30
- 8:11seconds before the twist was dropped.
- 8:13I didn't make the connection. Melody Pot.
- 8:18It's so They say. All Moffett's twists are so on
- 8:22the surface. Especially with names, because
- 8:24all of his characters are called like Penelope Water or something
- 8:28like that, they've all got weird names.
- 8:29Right, Nightingale. Missy.
- 8:31Even Missy. Yeah.
- 8:33The master. Yeah, but now, classic.
- 8:37Moffett. Pass him off.
- 8:40Shall we jump in today? Yeah, we're ready to moon.
- 8:43Yeah, I'm ready to. Moon always join us, Kazan.
- 8:49If all three of us do it, they'll be an eclipse.
- 8:51Let's go. Great, See, one blast off.
- 8:56And we're definitely in the period of previously on.
- 8:59We need a bit of this going on right now, don't we?
- 9:02But whenever Doctor Who does that, I feel like it's a proper
- 9:04TV show. This, I think this is my own
- 9:06hang up about Doctor Who being taken seriously of just growing
- 9:10up in the 90s where nobody else like Doctor Who.
- 9:13I'm always amazed when I listen to to watch him and marks like
- 9:16what my friend from school had that video I knew nobody had to
- 9:19force my brother to to watch Doctor Who.
- 9:22A bit like a little girl who basically.
- 9:26He is forced to Sarah to watch it now, Yeah.
- 9:29I knew absolutely, buddy. Yeah.
- 9:32I had my one friend who got me into it, but it was like when I
- 9:35was four years old, right up until I was about 20.
- 9:37So it's just. Yeah, one friend when I was 9,
- 9:39but no one at high school. He wouldn't dare.
- 9:43I like the new series, but. Look at this.
- 9:46This all looks fab. It does.
- 9:48High speed car chases will come on from the 70s and we.
- 9:52And I'm a big fan of the time jump cliffhanger for probably
- 9:55reasons that I'd assume you are Dylan.
- 9:58Is that? The actual resolution to a
- 10:00cliffhanger can't be that good, so why not just skip to the good
- 10:03bit? Yeah, I think Moffett's very
- 10:06good at making his part ones and twos very different and making
- 10:09sure it's not just a story split in half.
- 10:12Yeah, which is so much better, yeah.
- 10:15Did you see that camera go over that mountain?
- 10:17Yeah, that's great, didn't it? That's amazing.
- 10:20Oh, by the way, did you two knows as well how I fed you
- 10:22misinformation at the beginning of this course, saying that I
- 10:24got bored by the end of this episode.
- 10:27Yeah, I was deceiving you both. Now we know that you're a good
- 10:33liar. We'll never be able to trust you
- 10:35again. I'm a fantastic liar.
- 10:40I like all this as well, these black and white sort of grainy
- 10:43flashbacks. Every Doctor You fan likes you
- 10:45with Doctor Who Goes Black and white, it's.
- 10:49Just got a bit about Mr. here. Yeah, there's something about
- 10:52it. Why?
- 10:53Why didn't they make the Happiness Patrol black and
- 10:55white? I never forgive them.
- 10:57They should have made the whole of the 50th in black and white.
- 11:02I can. Take Matt's myth seriously.
- 11:04With a beard. Wonderful beard.
- 11:08Beards never look that good though.
- 11:10Do they fake beards? I mean that you can tell it's
- 11:12stuck on. I like it because it's only
- 11:14there for one minute. Yeah, well, it comes back in the
- 11:16finale, don't it? Yeah.
- 11:18Sell out what they build around him.
- 11:21Dwarf star alloy. Glorious gate, you know.
- 11:25Is it? Yeah.
- 11:27God, Moffett's a nerd, isn't? It all the way from.
- 11:31Yeah, I got. I have got a minor gripe about
- 11:33that though, because because it's only just been two episodes
- 11:37since the perfect ever prison to then have another perfect ever
- 11:41prison are. You suggesting that Moff is
- 11:43above reusing our DS? But I mean, it's literally.
- 11:48It's literally a cube with the Doctor site inside.
- 11:52Every time someone dives into the TARDIS out of a high space,
- 11:56I love it. I loved it with asymptora the
- 11:58Doctor. I loved it with River here.
- 12:01Yeah, it's just one of those things that knew who does every
- 12:05now and then that you like. They just couldn't fit.
- 12:07They couldn't do that in classic Doctor Who.
- 12:09The funniest feeling is that very undramatic splash.
- 12:11From Yeah, I was just about to say it's really good, but the
- 12:14special effect of the splash is fuck it.
- 12:16And that reminds you, it's Doctor, yeah.
- 12:19It does show you how we come on, because Ace, where we see it
- 12:21from her POV going into the top is incredible.
- 12:26Are you saying the system? I think this looks very good.
- 12:29All right, take what? Splash is shit, though.
- 12:32I love how this cliffhanger is just sort of all tied together
- 12:36and you're suddenly in this little little mystery.
- 12:42Why are we all slight little kids now?
- 12:47I miss that. I was too busy watching the
- 12:49bloody Yeah. And you were making insightful
- 12:51comments. Yeah, you say them are really
- 12:53good. Is the best thing I've ever
- 12:55said, said. Well, listen, I'll hear it.
- 12:59And when I listen back, all right before I it.
- 13:02Wasn't. I was just saying that I like
- 13:03this bit. It does make you beg the
- 13:05question though, why he doesn't just always get the TARDIS.
- 13:09You know, like App St. falling down the Titanic, why he didn't
- 13:12just throw the TARDIS. But you can't ask that question.
- 13:18You can't always bring it back. To when they use the hats in Was
- 13:22It the Crotons? And What's the What's the New
- 13:24series on where they use the hats?
- 13:26I'll call that. You think that's that's a very
- 13:28useful thing that could have come in, Andy many, many times.
- 13:32Look at them aware. It's almost like the invisible
- 13:35targets isn't. It that is such a great
- 13:37location. It's I got their money's worth
- 13:39out of America, didn't they I? I love all this stuff of.
- 13:43Putting the markings on your body and not really know.
- 13:45What they are, although the ones on the face are odd cuz that how
- 13:48do you, how do you know they're on there?
- 13:52Look in the mirror. I'm gonna get Doctor Who tattoos
- 13:55and they're just gonna all be those.
- 13:59I do have the one Doctor Who tattoo.
- 14:02I think this is where is it? I've only got one tattoo and I
- 14:06got it last year and it is the Matt Smith.
- 14:09Tardis. No.
- 14:11The DW is in the TARDIS shape from the logo, it's.
- 14:15On. My leg.
- 14:17I wonder if I can get it up. This is very good.
- 14:22Get him out. Largely.
- 14:23This is great for podcasting. Go on.
- 14:25Oh. Beautiful mine's.
- 14:28On. Dylan is moaning.
- 14:29Mine's on me on how do. You TARDIS on me off, Oh my.
- 14:33Shit. Well, it was 55 needles in
- 14:38Columbia. 5 Needles in Columbia. Yeah.
- 14:41Wow. Jack and I could get the Ursula
- 14:43Blake paving slab somewhere. Yeah, I would get the little
- 14:48girl from Akatin as well. No, no, we're not doing it.
- 14:54Do you know what I would really like as a Doctor Who tattoo but
- 14:57I haven't got the balls, is I would love a Weeping Angel on
- 15:01both of my forearms. One like that, like that's a
- 15:04scary thing. And one with the hands over
- 15:05there. That's clever.
- 15:07Yeah, that's good. I'll probably never did it.
- 15:10I'll probably just. Know I've image of an Angel.
- 15:14This is a fantastic pre title sequence.
- 15:17I still don't think he ever bettered the Pandora Opens.
- 15:21As anything ever better. But like in his special kind of
- 15:25niche way of doing all those locations, and I feel like he
- 15:29spends his money in odd ways. He does it in sort of 5 minutes
- 15:32and he's got no fucking money left for the rest of the
- 15:34episode. But.
- 15:34And he saves it for himself. He opens with a bang.
- 15:39Well, yeah, Night terrors. They've got no money at all.
- 15:42It's a long pretile sequence. Nothing can save night terrors.
- 15:45How long is it? Oh yeah, 6 1/2 minutes.
- 15:48But the Pan Pandorica one's about 5 minutes but.
- 15:50That that's a statement, isn't it?
- 15:52It's sweeping across the series, and it links narratively to The
- 15:56Big Bang. Rewind and through the series,
- 15:59and it's for characters we actually like.
- 16:01You. Know if they did it here and it
- 16:04was like Captain Avery and stuff, which is really good, at
- 16:07least Van Gogh feel like, Oh yeah, he was cool.
- 16:14I forgot what I was going to say, but it was very insightful.
- 16:16Oh, I'm so sorry. I've taken a lot from that.
- 16:21About pre, about. I think this orphanage is one of
- 16:25the creepiest fucking locations ever in Doctor Who.
- 16:28Yeah, and it's shot really well for some it's sort of, it
- 16:31becomes almost a bit Tim Burtonesque in in in like the
- 16:35angles they choose and stuff. It's.
- 16:36It feels like a proper horror movie, doesn't it?
- 16:39Yeah. Weird eccentric fellow opens the
- 16:41door. It's like, ah, well, you buy
- 16:42that. Come in, then It's all blood.
- 16:44Not the walls, okay. I'd walk in there and go, you
- 16:47know, I'm out, alright. I'm not coming in.
- 16:50I don't know if it's just a reaction to what Doctor Who fans
- 16:54in quote like, but yet anytime we start going to that classic
- 16:59horror, we love it Totally. No, I don't.
- 17:02It sort of takes me out. It's sort of what you were
- 17:04saying in Village to the Angels. It ruins flux a little bit and I
- 17:07think it's just because. They did it so well back in the
- 17:10day. Because you're young, well.
- 17:12Probably, yeah. I don't know.
- 17:13It's the one of the stuffing horrors in the old series.
- 17:16It's the one but the story where it just slows down a bit from
- 17:18it. The orphanage, even though
- 17:20there's some good shots and skirts in it.
- 17:22Everybody just wants it to look like talents and wind Chiang
- 17:24constantly. Again, again, like Karen Gillen
- 17:28is so good. Like.
- 17:31Her fear feels in a way that, you know, I'm going to make an
- 17:34unfair comparison that Jenna Coleman.
- 17:36I never felt she was afraid once in 2 1/2 years in Doctor Who,
- 17:40but. She's not.
- 17:41But she's a character's not. Is she really?
- 17:44Hideous in it. But Aaron killing is terrified
- 17:47in these things. And she should be.
- 17:51I mean, she's in that position where she's completely How long
- 17:53has she been there for? Well.
- 17:55At this point. Yeah, she's just arrived now,
- 17:59isn't she? What are you talking about?
- 18:02The character or the the accent? Well, Amy, well, we cut back to
- 18:04her and she's got all those bloody markings on her face.
- 18:08Well, this it just happens in like she just goes in the rooms
- 18:12and she she's not there for ages.
- 18:14Oh, of course she was I. Don't think so, no.
- 18:17She's not there for. That I'm watching something else
- 18:19then? She says they're as long as she
- 18:22likes, yeah. I remembered the exciting and
- 18:26valid points I was going to make and realized that it was about
- 18:29night Terrors talking about a lot.
- 18:33You said nothing could make night terrors good.
- 18:36I I think night terrors would have been good if they'd have
- 18:39landed in the dolls house with the peg dolls and then figured
- 18:45out afterwards that it was this whole shit happening in a
- 18:48council flat with a little boy is an alien.
- 18:52I know Jess and all that bit and just have them running around
- 18:54with the. Rank up 45.
- 18:56Minutes. That's why you should be right.
- 18:58Or adopted. Dylan, you know, I'm.
- 19:00I'm trying. To get the job, they usually
- 19:02give it to people who've never written before a book on these
- 19:06Doctor Who spit offs. You can do this a lot, can't
- 19:10you? In hindsight Go.
- 19:11What could make this work is not making it in the 1st place, you
- 19:15know? It's why the unmade stories are
- 19:20always like. In fans minds, the best things
- 19:23that never happened and. Then they get.
- 19:25The ultimate. I've not touched that with a
- 19:29barge pole though. The the mission to Magnus the
- 19:34Sill one, is it? It's terrible, but I'm rather a
- 19:39fan of B movies, so. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:42And the Celestial Toymaker. One's bloody dreadful as well.
- 19:44And for years everyone was like it was going to be amazing.
- 19:48Have you ever heard the Fendal Torchwood Monthly range from
- 19:55now? I can't say anything about it
- 19:56because it drew in it, but that's interesting.
- 20:00That's one to check out. Gwen in the Wanda Ventum role,
- 20:05isn't it? Isn't she the Fendal woman in
- 20:07that? Yeah, she's in it.
- 20:09It's it's uncomfortable listening, but.
- 20:12It's torturing. I imagine she's in gold paint
- 20:14and masturbating or something like that.
- 20:18I mean and I will check that. Out.
- 20:24He's banking that one for later. Look, I was in the orphanage.
- 20:30You just go in, would y'all No. He's bloody terrifying, but I
- 20:34like the fact that he's seen the silence so many times and been
- 20:38manipulated by them so many times that his mind has just
- 20:41snapped. He likes doing this.
- 20:44Then all the blood up the walls when the doctor's wife.
- 20:47Is it blood or is it just red paint?
- 20:49That's the Doctor's what I thought is actually horrific,
- 20:51isn't it? Again, so raw, played by Karen
- 20:56Gillan. I used to watched it the first
- 21:01time. I never particularly liked
- 21:02jewelry. I just thought he got in the way
- 21:05of what I wanted it to be, which was the Doctor and Amy.
- 21:08Shagging and having a great time, but coming.
- 21:12It's a lad, aren't you? You're getting older.
- 21:15I fucking love Rory and I love their relationship.
- 21:18He's. My favorite at this Three.
- 21:20Well, you've realized that he's the identification for, yeah.
- 21:23He is. He is me in this, in the no, in
- 21:27the three. I'm not.
- 21:27Sure. How many times?
- 21:28How? Many times.
- 21:29Have he died? But like he's going.
- 21:34Down that rub out. To be like, isn't it?
- 21:37Yeah. Well, because I think he's he
- 21:39starts off, he's a bit of a coward, he doesn't.
- 21:41Yeah, he's not. Just want to be there.
- 21:44He's like a reluctant hero, which is what you always wish
- 21:47you. Probably just don't buy it in.
- 21:49A good man goes to war where he's suddenly in that Roman
- 21:51gear, taking on entire cyber. Wars.
- 21:54I'll say It's slightly artificial.
- 21:58He spent 2000 years being a warrior protecting a cube,
- 22:01right? Didn't he?
- 22:02What was that all about? I've never listened to the
- 22:08boxes, but I can only imagine it's fantastic.
- 22:11I thought, like, if Panda goes literally one of my favorite
- 22:15episodes, but I did. I listened to that 15 minute
- 22:19excerpt of the. They put it on the end of Big
- 22:22Finish podcasts. If there's a new release coming
- 22:24out, you get the 1st 15 minutes and listen to that.
- 22:27What we want. Fuck me.
- 22:30You know, sometimes they release a trailer or a or a clip and it
- 22:33puts you off. Yeah, that happens more often
- 22:36than it turns me on, Big Finish. That fucking smug as assholes
- 22:44Nick and Benji talking. I'm like, I don't care if you
- 22:47put the sign free on the end of this.
- 22:48I can't listen to this. I can't listen to it.
- 22:51It's yeah. Oh, there we go.
- 22:53Yes. Oh, you just have the Doctor in
- 22:55the shuttle as well, like caught in the top of the shuttle, now
- 22:58that I love. This the silence of doing a lot
- 23:03of stuff, like dangling from ceilings in the last episode, is
- 23:05hiding in corners. And I do have to ask the
- 23:07question, what you doing there? What you doing tonight, lads?
- 23:12Thought I might just cuddle in a corner with my mates.
- 23:15I do think this was going to happen.
- 23:16You know me. And how great this is and you 2
- 23:19plug in all the floors. But I think when you love
- 23:22something, the first thing you do is try to take the piss out
- 23:24of it, isn't it? Yeah.
- 23:25So I don't want to just say and go, this is great.
- 23:29Which is great. But it is.
- 23:30We did that for most of the flux season, you know?
- 23:33Yeah, yeah. Is Karen Gillan the hottest
- 23:39female companion of all time? I'd have her yes.
- 23:44I think the answer is yes. Yeah, I think for me, yeah.
- 23:47Just so we're all on the same page.
- 23:48I really dislike her character in series five, though I find
- 23:52that they took a while to find her, that she treats Rory
- 23:56appallingly. You can't.
- 23:58You can't be a straight man and not like her in series 5.
- 24:05The thing is, she's she is flawed and she treats really
- 24:09badly, but that's what people do when they're in their 20s and
- 24:11stuff. Like that I realized, didn't I?
- 24:12I had a bit of a therapy session with Luke when we did.
- 24:15The good man goes to what I realized that my issue with that
- 24:18was the fact that whilst I was watching those episodes in
- 24:21series five, I was in a polygamous relationship and
- 24:23treating somebody terribly. So I was basically taking out
- 24:26all my own problems on Amy Bonds.
- 24:29And you had a baby that turned into cum.
- 24:32Oh did. It doesn't.
- 24:35Ever. Seem to turn.
- 24:36Into cum. No, it starts off as cum.
- 24:41Oh, you don't think there's something in that, do you?
- 24:43Probably nothing would fucking test it.
- 24:45I mean, he made the universe come back, didn't he?
- 24:50I I do. I love this as a little problem
- 24:54solve. It doesn't need to be here, but
- 24:56it's just a great fun that they just got right.
- 24:58We need to be the president and that'll sort everything out.
- 25:01It's just such a stupid Doctor Who idea.
- 25:03It's just basically what they did with the Brick and Harry
- 25:06stories, isn't it? Invasion of Dinosaurs where he's
- 25:08arrested and then the brick just comes in and sorts it all out
- 25:11straight away. And I think River Song and Rory
- 25:15in their period costumes look fabulous.
- 25:17They do. In fact, River Song looks a bit
- 25:21shackable there. She's.
- 25:23Very attractive for Marmish, doesn't she?
- 25:28She heart. And I prefer it because her hair
- 25:31is so bloody massive. Usually when they sort of
- 25:34restrain it a bit, it's quite nice.
- 25:38He loves to be restrained. I think it gave from Karen
- 25:41Gillan to Jeremy Coleman it was. You know, it was Moffett just
- 25:46casting the hottest girls you could find.
- 25:50Can I well, can I say something to you because I oh, well, I'm
- 25:53obviously who plays Bill. Bill.
- 25:57Mackey is very beautiful as well.
- 25:58I was with Mandy Gill a couple of weeks ago and she's
- 26:01stunningly beautiful. Yeah.
- 26:05There's a thing though, like because I found the character so
- 26:08boring, it's she's not that she's not as attractive, whereas
- 26:12like. I would say that's where when
- 26:14you meet her, all right. I really like Amy and Clara.
- 26:18So they're almost more attractive because you don't
- 26:21really know those people, you just know them as these
- 26:23characters. So Amy, in my mind is this
- 26:27kissogram from LED work. If you ever meet Karen Gillan,
- 26:30you're like, are you not a kissogram from.
- 26:33When I'm getting so in tune with Moffett's wank fantasy, I see
- 26:40what you like this so much it. Probably is.
- 26:45It is the most heterosexual Doctor Who has been for some
- 26:48time. You know when you think it was
- 26:50J&T for 10 years and then Rusty Davis for four.
- 26:53Oh, here is everyone's favorites Turf.
- 26:58What? What's her name?
- 27:02I worked with Francis Barber once.
- 27:04She did like 3 days on this film that I worked on and it was just
- 27:08as the Kevin Spacey stuff was breaking and she came and sat
- 27:11down and was just talking at us and she was like, well, I was
- 27:14hoping to get my American visa. But you have to have three sign
- 27:17offs of one of mines, Kevin Spacey, and he's royally gone
- 27:19and fucked it up for me. At the risk of.
- 27:28Treading on Thin Eyes, I I really dislike the character of
- 27:33Madam Kivari because I don't think we ever really learn
- 27:35anything about her at all besides being, you know, a bit
- 27:38of a candle to even. But I do love it when she pops
- 27:41up in these episodes. It's like those sort of early
- 27:44RCD seasons where you get or Missy popping up in early series
- 27:488. I love those little sort of
- 27:50teasers. It definitely feels like she
- 27:52should have been there at the end.
- 27:55Yeah, in time of the Doctor, just to tie it up.
- 27:58She canceled at that point. No, no.
- 28:01I don't think she's properly canceled.
- 28:03No. She's like Sammy.
- 28:04Canceled. She's canceled.
- 28:05In Doctor Who circles, she's not canceled.
- 28:07But she still does Big Finish and still does conventions right
- 28:10and stuff like that. Yeah.
- 28:11I think she she just liked some tweets rather than like proper
- 28:14went out there and did a change straight.
- 28:17That little Gray area. Drops to her though, and I'm
- 28:23talking about the character now. I'm not the actress.
- 28:25She can deliver those sort of one line that ended where she
- 28:28goes. I love that ending.
- 28:31Considering that, like everything she says is really
- 28:34nonsubstantial, she just give it a bit of weight.
- 28:37And yeah, I agree that when she's.
- 28:39Nothing character though, isn't she?
- 28:41Yeah, So when she pops up, like saying these little hatch things
- 28:44as a tease, it's really interesting.
- 28:47She like, what the fuck is that? It's.
- 28:50The time if the Doctor really suffers from her not being in it
- 28:53and from River Song not being in it.
- 28:55But we get Tasha Lemsip, who's just like a weak imitation.
- 29:00Recently turned up on Star Trek Picard, Yeah.
- 29:03I did she Oh, yeah. She was a regular.
- 29:05And strangely, Wells, they've got what's the face of Lorna
- 29:08bucket, haven't they? Oh, she's fabulous.
- 29:11She's amazing. I teach she.
- 29:12God that the bad taste of Lorna Bucket is long behind us.
- 29:16If. You leave Lorna Bucket alone.
- 29:18My God, you're Lorna Bucket. I still don't know who she is.
- 29:22For years I thought big if Big Finish got their hands on Matt
- 29:26Smith, the it's like the most potential for for stories in
- 29:31boxes and things to explain and actually dive into.
- 29:35But like in the current year of Big Finish that we're in, I
- 29:38really don't want. That I feel like I have kind of
- 29:42ticked that box with Jacob Dublin and I know it's not Matt
- 29:45Smith, but he's a pretty good approximation.
- 29:48But no but like. You could get stuff like that.
- 29:51Like you could fill in the gaps a bit more with Malik Kevorian,
- 29:55The Silence and all that. I actually think you could fill
- 29:57in more gaps in Jody's time, and you could you could play about
- 30:02that time as children are you could do so much more sessions
- 30:05to one's master with the roof. Dogs are all of that.
- 30:08But you could see you could literally do the whole, you
- 30:10could do the trends a lot as a as a box.
- 30:13I know that we got that book once would like 4.
- 30:16Little Short stories. It depends on all tails, yeah.
- 30:20But I don't think Matt Smith does Big Finish ever.
- 30:25He's just he's too. He's successful enough to not
- 30:30need to do it, and as much as he loves the role, the only reason
- 30:33David Tennant does it is because he's a fan.
- 30:36Really, Christopher Eccleston's only started doing it since the
- 30:39work just started drying, drying up on TV and you know, Lockdown
- 30:44happened. So I just, I you know, I just
- 30:48don't see. But it does.
- 30:50It's like a good thing in one way, because it does preserve
- 30:53that, like I. Don't know.
- 30:56I do think David Tennants had some pretty good stuff would be
- 30:59finished. So it's been some.
- 31:00Great. Yeah.
- 31:00And because they're not intrusive or stupid, I'm going
- 31:04to say stupid. I mean, like it's not David said
- 31:06it me and fuck knows anymore. It's on the strength of one of
- 31:10your lust on Gallifrey reviews, You know that I went out and
- 31:12bought that darling universe. Yeah.
- 31:15Well, I mean that is a good and that is the sort of thing that
- 31:18they should be doing that's sort of hampered by them skewing in
- 31:22on your Kingdom from some of the Sir.
- 31:25Dollies Master Plan. Well, they, they only did.
- 31:29I think they only got them for all those though, because it was
- 31:32knocked down and they were like, right, David Tennants at home.
- 31:35He's got a microphone. I bet if you look at their sales
- 31:40over time, there was something an enormous spike that year.
- 31:44Well, there was that year when it was like the David ten sets
- 31:47of one month. Eccleston was just coming out.
- 31:49The other month I I yeah, it was fucking.
- 31:52Yeah, it was called long time now.
- 31:55Did you know at the time of this Big Finish for nearly, I know to
- 31:59sort of bring it back on topic but not but Big Finish nearly
- 32:03quit nearly jacked all in because they were not selling
- 32:07the sort of numbers they needed to they.
- 32:09Actually completely revolutionized.
- 32:12How they made things, How they were bringing things out.
- 32:15Like Dark Eyes was just after this, wasn't it?
- 32:17And then that set the template for Boxer.
- 32:19Yeah, but they said it was around the 50th anniversary when
- 32:23the main series started acknowledging the past of the
- 32:26show. And then Night of the Doctor
- 32:27happened, and even though it was only 5 minutes, they said it
- 32:30bought in loads of new fans because they were like, oh who's
- 32:33this Doctor? We need more of them.
- 32:35References. Doesn't he references Lucy and
- 32:39all of that love? God, what did we do?
- 32:42We want monster that we create. Don't ask why is it?
- 32:48I've forgotten now and I washed it this morning.
- 32:50Why is it they can hear Amy, but they can't see it?
- 32:52What's occurring it? It's that he's put them red
- 32:56microchips in the hands that record what you say.
- 33:00So where is she right now? The silence of kidnapped, I
- 33:04think, yeah. To take over the world, Why are
- 33:11they doing that? They're not taking over the
- 33:14world, they're influencing the world to create a spacesuit so
- 33:19that then they can put the kid in it, or with a song in it, to
- 33:23then complete the mission of killing the Doctor at Lake
- 33:27Solencio in a space. Why do they want to do that?
- 33:30Because it's a fixed point that the Doctor, that they kill the
- 33:32Doctor. Lake Solencio.
- 33:35And yeah, a fixed point. You can call that an arbitrary
- 33:38point as well if you want. A fixed arbitrary point What?
- 33:42You're saying this whole season is built around this premise
- 33:47that the Doctor dies? Yeah, it's not for a reason.
- 33:49Because because time says that should happen.
- 33:53Well, yeah. Yeah, that's just shit.
- 33:57That's no kind of a motive. Not yet.
- 33:59Not if the journey is enjoyable though, which is what we keep
- 34:02coming back to. When when the Silents are
- 34:06introduced and you sort of got what they're up to, I thought
- 34:09they'd be the villain for the 50th anniversary because if they
- 34:13could influence in human history, you'd suddenly got this
- 34:15thing of like you could insert them into lots of old stories
- 34:18and things like that and. Why are you not the show?
- 34:24But you know, you could do this sort of what they did in the
- 34:26name of the Doctor with Clara going back through, but it makes
- 34:29more sense if it's somebody like that rather than the great
- 34:31intelligence showing up for Richard and Grant have a cameo
- 34:34I. Didn't you're a genius.
- 34:36That is such a great idea. Was that, did you think that the
- 34:4050th anniversary would be set in the time stream?
- 34:43You. Know because that's where it
- 34:44ends. And I was like, well, that's
- 34:45perfect. Then we can just walk through
- 34:48shit and. It was so surprising to me that
- 34:51it's not when it's. Yeah, we're just back to normal.
- 34:53Don't even know how they got out of us.
- 34:55Yeah, it don't matter timing, right?
- 34:59Yeah. Said we just got a romp with 1
- 35:031/2 doctors. Zigons and Queen, Queen
- 35:06Elizabeth you. Know quite from off a convention
- 35:10recently. So just like every time you do a
- 35:13multi doctor story something goes wrong, someone doesn't say
- 35:16no or someone says no and you're left with an impersonator or
- 35:20some other guy every single time he's trying to go on.
- 35:23You remember that really dreadful John Poe were that was
- 35:26in the trailer with the rapier? Well, yeah, because they forgot
- 35:29to replace his face. But everybody else was a
- 35:32standard. They replaced their faces, but
- 35:34they forgot to replace. John, so far I didn't realize
- 35:37that was the case. I thought it was.
- 35:41That's my favorite trailer of all time.
- 35:43It's. The better.
- 35:43It's the best thing about the 50th anniversary.
- 35:45OK, the doc touch what are you? Going going through it frame by
- 35:49frame to see Easter eggs was the best thing in the world.
- 35:53What a geek. Oh, it was, though, the Arachnos
- 35:57on the Cliff at all. I remember going out for dinner.
- 36:01When that was dropping and being told off by my girlfriend at the
- 36:05time because I kept leaving the table to go watch the trailer
- 36:08again and again and again, she's like, can you just talk to my
- 36:11fucking friends? I'm like, not to.
- 36:13It's the 50th anniversary, but I told you about this.
- 36:16The day I'll be waiting for. Oh my God.
- 36:19I almost came away from my wedding reception because you
- 36:22know what was on that day Heaven sent, so I have to watch it the
- 36:27next day. Did you see my?
- 36:31Think about having said that, my article sums up my night of
- 36:36having said. Oh, and to anyone.
- 36:40Listen, I mean, I've done this a few Times Now.
- 36:42Go find Luke's countdown. It is phenomenal.
- 36:45One of the best Doctor Who countdowns of new series
- 36:48episodes, minus Jody Whitaker, because it don't want to shit
- 36:50all over it. Wonderful.
- 36:53Where can we find that, Luke? Thank you At Lost under score
- 36:57Gallifrey on Twitter. It'll be it'll be right there at
- 37:00the top. You haven't done Heaven's sense
- 37:03in Hell Bent for this yet, have you?
- 37:06I'm done. You're not for this.
- 37:09Yeah, for this. No.
- 37:12OK, I think, I think we need to reconvene.
- 37:15That would be good. Should we have another freeway?
- 37:17Yeah, I. Mean.
- 37:18I'm really not sure what I'd say for heavens then, apart from
- 37:21just sitting there. We barely talked about Day of
- 37:27the Moon. And we can just talk.
- 37:29Yeah, this episode is great. By the way, I I I've got a lot
- 37:35to say about Heaven Sent and Hell Bent.
- 37:37I've got to say about Hell Bent, I'd love to see you both front
- 37:40and me on. That one hell bent is, like,
- 37:42weirdly almost more interesting than heaven said Yeah.
- 37:46Yeah, it's more interesting to talk about, I think.
- 37:48It's it tries to do something. Just didn't know the dog story
- 37:53is done. Flawless TV is so boring to
- 37:56write. About.
- 37:57I'm with you. It was just a paragraph.
- 38:02Can I ask you a question about this silence pushing onto
- 38:04humanity and manipulating humanity to get to some point
- 38:08for their evil plans? Because I just want to mention
- 38:11the Jaguar off that pushed on humanity to work their evil
- 38:15plans and also Azal who pushed on a good plan is.
- 38:18A good plan? We achieve any fucking thing
- 38:22throughout human history without aliens getting involved.
- 38:25No, that's the whole point. Isn't that the good like the
- 38:28conceit that all scifi comes to at some point that the aliens
- 38:31were here 1st and. When you think about the Doctor
- 38:34in every single period of history, I don't think we
- 38:37achieved much, you know. And to be honest, it happens in
- 38:41Prometheus, the Alien film. And you know those the Silence
- 38:45and those big white creatures look a bit like.
- 38:48It looks similar, so I'm saying they're in the same universe.
- 38:50That's what I'm saying. Doctor Who versus Xenomorphs.
- 38:58Saying it, is it any good? What?
- 38:59Prometheus? Yeah, that's fucking terrible.
- 39:02Seen it years and years ago. Amazing.
- 39:05Dreadful. And it's got an even worse
- 39:07sequel. Isn't this great?
- 39:09I thought this was fabulous because, you know, as I said, I
- 39:12had a few issues with how Amy was sort of going, Oh yeah,
- 39:14well, you can come along as well.
- 39:16That's what a Rose Mickey thing that was going on.
- 39:19But then we think she's talking to the Doctor here, don't we?
- 39:22And she's actually talking to Rory and I like every time she
- 39:25chooses Rory. I'm not punching the air.
- 39:27Like, yes. So goes.
- 39:30I'm just going to say I feel like Moffett realized his
- 39:32mistake with Rory in the first series, and in this season he
- 39:36goes out of his way to show how much she loves him.
- 39:38Yeah, I think this is to address the fact to the audience.
- 39:42There's no doubt she's not going to shag the Doctor anymore.
- 39:45She's with Rory. The best is.
- 39:49And I really like Angels Take Manhattan, so maybe we should
- 39:53reconvene on that one. I'll be the one that's saying
- 39:55it's amazing, but the bit at the end where she says, you know,
- 39:59he's my husband and I'm going to jump off that with him because
- 40:02it's together or not at all. I was like, yes, if this is
- 40:05where we've been leading all this time, that's very
- 40:07satisfying. I really like it.
- 40:10The Angels take for that. I've got problems with it, but I
- 40:12think it's a great 45 minutes. It just goes by.
- 40:18Just that scene on the stairs. Yeah, and a bit of the time
- 40:23travel logic in it doesn't sit well with me at all.
- 40:26Well, yeah, you can't go back to it, right?
- 40:28We'll just go to another part of America.
- 40:30It's not just that. It's just like, oh, we read it
- 40:32in a book, so it has to happen, which I just like, Why is that a
- 40:38real that? Yeah.
- 40:40How many does that mean? No one's ever read a book?
- 40:43Going back to how this looks for a second, yeah, like.
- 40:47Remember watching? Well, you don't look because as
- 40:50I keep saying, you are young. But watching the classic series,
- 40:55do we ever envisage that this show would look like this and.
- 40:58I think at this time I'm still amazed every time because every
- 41:02season looks better and better and better, doesn't it?
- 41:05By the time you get to this season, I keep going back to
- 41:07that trailer. I just remember thinking, wow,
- 41:10Doctor Who is like American level sort of box set show in a
- 41:15way that it's. It's not been before it was.
- 41:18The IT was the Series 7 trailer for me.
- 41:22I, even though I didn't have this like classic thing, I
- 41:25remember seeing that Parliament of Daleks and all the Dalek
- 41:28ships and thinking, fuck me, that looks amazing.
- 41:33My favorite Still the Series 4 BE Oh my God, the stars are
- 41:38going out. That's right, fantastic.
- 41:42With the gun. We're.
- 41:44In. Even though it makes no sense
- 41:46that roses. Are the size of our gun.
- 41:52I used to love the the series trailers we get at the end of
- 41:55Christmas specials. That was like your present.
- 41:58That was the Christmas present. It's not.
- 42:00Just me? You trying to say that starring
- 42:02Art Malik doesn't do it for you? What about the damn the
- 42:06plasterer teaser, did you not? Like that.
- 42:09This thing is though is right. Is what he does drop him?
- 42:12Yeah, A week before they're about to wear.
- 42:14That's flux Trainer was brilliant.
- 42:17Yeah, it just came too late to get as excited.
- 42:20I don't remember that one. I do remember really like in the
- 42:22series 11 one where she kisses the air and they play glorious.
- 42:26I remember thinking that looks cool and new and fresh.
- 42:30Now Matt Smith's. Is it?
- 42:33Matt Smith is on fine form at this point.
- 42:35This is one of his key doctorish moments.
- 42:38I think the way he just talks and talks his way through this
- 42:41and confidently owns the room. It's a prop and his chemistry
- 42:45again with River is just it's it's 10 out of 10 doctors.
- 42:49Yeah, and his way of defeating The Silence is so clever as
- 42:53well, that using their sibling no power against them that it
- 42:57just it really gives it the kick.
- 43:00But yeah, he's so-called. The smart we needed at the end
- 43:03of the season, because this is, this is a very clever ending to
- 43:06this two-part objective is the fact that he's, I know it's me
- 43:10saying this. He's practically masturbating
- 43:12over a murdering all these people around.
- 43:14A bit weird. Yeah, but I mean, they're bad
- 43:18people, aren't they? Yeah.
- 43:19That's fine. And we've already established
- 43:21he's a bad man. I'm all for dropping this.
- 43:24The Doctor feels bad every time someone dies.
- 43:27Thing. It's not sustainable in this
- 43:30show, yeah. Well, you know what?
- 43:33That sequence, you know, where Davrov showed him all those
- 43:36people that he's responsible for killing, You know, But he's done
- 43:39it a lot now. He's probably so.
- 43:40Yeah, And also, it's not like Eve, everyone has stabbed them
- 43:43all, was it, you know? Nice crime Doctor Hood.
- 43:49I was watching the Rebus operation a few weeks ago and at
- 43:52the end of that, the graph in decay, the doctor literally just
- 43:55puts a hand grenade in his pocket.
- 43:57It sort of goes, blows up, it sort of goes through.
- 44:02I haven't been really shocked at Morpheus, sort of came back to
- 44:04that and he just cyanides the shit out.
- 44:07Oh, Baker was ruthless, but. They'll forget this bit.
- 44:15It's so good and then music's really swelling.
- 44:17Yeah, and. You know what they say.
- 44:20This is the sort of perfect payoff you want in a two-part.
- 44:23Absolutely. Say like the new series gets the
- 44:25moment right and maybe the logic's not always there, but
- 44:28then you know they get the moments.
- 44:30This is one over, isn't it? That you?
- 44:35Could. That's all that really matters.
- 44:37The logic is something. That I'm starting to wonder on
- 44:39TV now that is all that matters, I don't really think.
- 44:45I think as long as moments, moment people are entertained,
- 44:48that's that's what counts. Yeah, I think that all it is.
- 44:51I think the problem that TV's got at the moment is the
- 44:54register that is, well, let's try and shock me by bringing all
- 44:58these old people back or doing this thing or doing that rather
- 45:01than just I actually think it's fresher and better just to try
- 45:05and tell a good, proper story. No, I want every classic Doctor
- 45:09in every. Episode of Doctor.
- 45:10I'm not interested now the the problem with this plan means
- 45:16there's going to be a lot of people tripping over dead
- 45:19silences for years to come and not knowing why they've tripped
- 45:24over. You can't have no, I'm not in my
- 45:27chair anymore. That's.
- 45:28Because that's in time. It's right there.
- 45:30Look. It's it's the beginning of those
- 45:34accident lawyers for you adverts, because people are
- 45:36constantly tripping over on the streets.
- 45:39Blame it on pavements. I have heard a lot of objections
- 45:42to this ending, that it is violent, that a lot of people.
- 45:44I know I love. It And I know, yeah, you guys,
- 45:46you guys love it. But I I do think there is a lot
- 45:49of objection to this sort of thing.
- 45:51Well, I've got more objection to the laser bolts coming out of
- 45:54his Sonic screwdriver than his flat.
- 45:58I love River shooting all the silence.
- 46:00I think it's it's a cool looking action moment and Doctor Who
- 46:04does this thing of making action heroes out of people who you
- 46:08wouldn't normally expect to be action heroes like River Song or
- 46:11probably the new Bonnie Langford Doctor Who.
- 46:15And I love that because in any other TV show she not say she's
- 46:19not sexy, but she would be a 25 year old supermodel or or like
- 46:24some big buff guy. But you know, she could be
- 46:26someone's mom, I mean. Yeah, she is so.
- 46:29What do you think of this bit when she shoots it without
- 46:32looking at it? I think it looks cool, although
- 46:34I hate the fact that his fingers flop when he laughs.
- 46:38He's got slow motion sparks going around her.
- 46:40That's very cool. Yeah, it is.
- 46:42It's all very. It's a.
- 46:43Real, I think. And you know, like you're
- 46:45saying, promoting a sexy older woman or middle-aged woman.
- 46:50It's a wonderful thing. I just wish I didn't find her so
- 46:53smug as ourselves all the time. But she's not like that all the
- 46:56time. She's a few episodes like that,
- 46:59but actually most of the time she gets it really right, as
- 47:03does the script. It's the sort of Let's Kill
- 47:05Hitler mode. Yeah, it's just that And to an
- 47:09extent when the River song, but that's because when the River
- 47:12songs just to be all like. We need to show you that the
- 47:16universe loves you. I prefer, you know, when she's
- 47:19on the back foot. That bit in the last.
- 47:25What's the last one? There husband's a River Song
- 47:28that bit on the ship when she realizes.
- 47:31I'm not a fan of the husband. I don't see where this like come
- 47:37from. People seem to really like it
- 47:40recently. In a year where you don't get
- 47:44any Doctor Who and it's tail ended by Doctor Mysterio and my
- 47:47husband's A River Song, I've never been so disappointed.
- 47:50Yeah, but I love Doctor. Mysterio as well, man, I love
- 47:54it. We're all kind of totally losing
- 47:55view. It's wonderful.
- 48:00I still think that ending of Husband's A River Song.
- 48:02That would have been a fine way for coupled to go out snogging
- 48:06her. Yeah.
- 48:08No. Then we wouldn't have got the.
- 48:11Lukewarm Series 10. The one everyone remembers so
- 48:16much better than actually. It's fucking amazing.
- 48:18I don't know what's wrong with this.
- 48:19Do they forget that Monk 3 part? It's because the first episode
- 48:23in the last two are fucking. Yeah, it is that the pilots
- 48:27brilliant. The last two, some are the best
- 48:30and then there's nine in the middle.
- 48:34But all like in episode three of any other series.
- 48:41But also, Bill's Fresh Air Juice carries it as well.
- 48:45Oh, my God. Just see what he said to Nixon.
- 48:47They're never gonna forget you. He thinks it's a compliment.
- 48:53Oh, here we go. This is where he outs himself.
- 48:56It's a it's it's a good little. Line.
- 48:57This is brilliant. Yeah, look on Nixon's face.
- 49:08I think the moon is far enough for now.
- 49:14I want to spin off of him and his husband fighting monsters in
- 49:17the 60s. Give me that big finish.
- 49:22I like coming back to this storm cage because it just keeps
- 49:25reminding me of Series 5, which I really love.
- 49:28Just keeps reminding me that that's underneath of the stadium
- 49:32in the. Same same world where they're
- 49:34going along on those little segways in the runway.
- 49:36And the one from Dalek as well. And to be underneath of the
- 49:40department store in Rose. For having that rain outside the
- 49:44window, I'm like, OK, they're trying, trying.
- 49:46To make it different. No, I don't like, but I think
- 49:52this this is definitely intended to be their last kiss from this
- 49:57perspective. But it doesn't quite end up like
- 50:02that because The kiss and the Angels Take Manhattan.
- 50:05Or at least implied that which is after this and so because I
- 50:09think because so seven, yeah he obviously didn't have the plan
- 50:12for so seven at this point that this is meant to be a big moment
- 50:17but it's actually not what. Could it just be the kiss?
- 50:19Oh, it's your first kiss. It's your last kiss.
- 50:22Well, that is their story though, isn't it?
- 50:26And it it is going in reverse order until.
- 50:30And just take my hand and then you go, I think by the end of
- 50:33Series 6, the story's done and it's and it's whatever.
- 50:36And then it's like, well, let's just bring it back for this and
- 50:39this and this. Do we?
- 50:40Do we like Doctor Who kissing people?
- 50:43Love it. Good.
- 50:45I'm a modern, I'm a modern series fan and I think kisses in
- 50:49anything make it more interesting in any drama, any
- 50:52TV. I like it when the kisses are
- 50:55funny. I love the kissing uniform in
- 50:57the walls where she goes. Here comes a shock.
- 51:01Yeah, a proper, like, scandalous kiss.
- 51:04Is there anything better than that?
- 51:05It's probably like. If you had asked me the day
- 51:10before the the new series had come back whether I thought the
- 51:14Doctor should kiss people, I would have said no.
- 51:16But the new series just sold it to me in by the by Bad Wolf and
- 51:20Parting of the Ways. Even though it's sort of done as
- 51:22a as sort of to save the universe, I was waiting for them
- 51:26to kiss like I think that's a testament of good writing.
- 51:30That won me over with the plots. You think Jody should have
- 51:33kissed somebody? I think Jody should have kissed
- 51:35Amanda. Yeah, 100%, I think.
- 51:37They should have. They didn't have to be big, but
- 51:39just something to buy. Kiss, you know Almost kind of
- 51:44like what? How Captain Jack kisses
- 51:46Christopher Eccleston like sort of tender goodbye, cuz they know
- 51:49it's a goodbye, but not like. 5 minutes of.
- 51:52Finger. Yeah.
- 51:52Why? I mean, why would you not do
- 51:54that moment? Yeah, it's.
- 51:56They were brave enough to suggest the same sex doctor
- 51:59companion relationship. Just see.
- 52:01Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we can put can put Colin
- 52:06Baker on screen in 2022, but we can't have two women kiss.
- 52:12This ending is is sort of the issue with the being caught with
- 52:18your foot in two camps of. Let's tell this big over
- 52:21watching story, oh shit, Doctor Who's going on for 13 weeks and
- 52:25it's an anthology show. So rather than just do the
- 52:27logical thing of finding out answers, it's like ah fuck it,
- 52:31let's just get rid of the because we.
- 52:35Have to be. I mean, in a lot of ways I think
- 52:37the flux season was a lot braver to do it in those condemn.
- 52:40I know it wasn't deliberate and they wanted 10 episodes.
- 52:42They would have done a Four Seasons it.
- 52:44Was a different time to. Do 6 episodes like that, Like
- 52:47they weren't doing that here, were they?
- 52:49No. And it works really well,
- 52:51definitely. But it was a different time in a
- 52:54way that like Russell T couldn't have done this in 2005.
- 52:58I don't think it was influx in 2011.
- 53:01No, I think you're probably right.
- 53:02I was super intrigued by this scene, but I was just like just
- 53:05another fucking mystery. No, I loved it with those things
- 53:08that haven't been answered. Yeah, I loved it.
- 53:10I think it's one of the greatest endings of the Doctor Who story.
- 53:15Like it. Just it.
- 53:16Just it. It's also telling everybody that
- 53:17this story is far from over. Yeah.
- 53:20And you go remember this to the point when the generation wasn't
- 53:23born, yeah. How does having sex in the
- 53:27TARDIS create? I've never, I've never done it.
- 53:35He said, Remember, let's kill Hitler where she's like, well,
- 53:37you can have all my energy. I won't.
- 53:40Regenerate. Again, you only have to ask.
- 53:48It's a such a cool cliffhanger. Yeah, it's clear.
- 53:52And now this is not that normal to have a season opened up with
- 53:56lots of questions unanswered. This is like, the norm in
- 53:58television. Oh God, here we go.
- 54:00Well, the Next Time trailer looks great.
- 54:02Yeah. I think I've got to the
- 54:05conclusions. I don't like pirate stories
- 54:06because. I don't like pirate stories, I
- 54:09think though. Space pirates.
- 54:13I think the curse of the Max part is very watchable.
- 54:16I just don't think it's good in any way.
- 54:19I can imagine a six year old watching it and thinking it's
- 54:22bloody brilliant. But I can't.
- 54:24It's not good. Who's the guy that writes it?
- 54:26He writes a loads. Of Steven Thompson?
- 54:29Yeah, exactly. He did time heist and journey to
- 54:32the center of the TARDIS and. I quite like time Heist.
- 54:35Yeah, I like time Heist, but Journey to the center of the
- 54:36TARDIS is oh. My God, that's one of those that
- 54:39I recognize. It's shit in every department,
- 54:41but quite like it. I think that's about the and the
- 54:45brother not being the Android. Yeah, it's the worst twist since
- 54:50Guy Crayford took off his iPad. Oh, it is, yeah.
- 54:54Yeah, it's absolutely horrendous.
- 54:58I don't know what because he was he was the other Sherlock
- 55:00writer, wasn't he? I.
- 55:02Think, Yeah. He wrote a good episode of
- 55:04Sherlock. He weirdly wrote the rocking
- 55:07back fall, which is like it's up there.
- 55:11Could be the best one. Yeah, and then he wrote two of
- 55:14the most forget forgettable Doctor Who stories ever.
- 55:18He did that Sherlock episode in series one with like the bankers
- 55:23and and that no one ever remembers, ever remembers the
- 55:27taxi driver and Moriarty turned up at the pool.
- 55:30And there's an episode in the middle that no one's got clear
- 55:33that. He did.
- 55:34He should go if you want a forgettable middle in a series
- 55:37episode. I realized I could be the
- 55:39exception from the norm, but I love Sherlock so much.
- 55:43Well, if you don't like it, makes more sense.
- 55:46Yeah. It was it.
- 55:47Was this taken to the Mth degree, wouldn't it?
- 55:50It makes sense for you. Smugness factor 11.
- 55:54Well, boys, we've watched the two episodes, and now we need to
- 55:58find nine reasons to recommend this.
- 56:01We're actually going to talk about them now.
- 56:04We're going to go. You ready?
- 56:06Dylan, Look me and then round around.
- 56:09OK, my first one is going to be the look of the episode.
- 56:15So from the production design through to the camera work, to
- 56:18the lighting, I think it looks fantastic.
- 56:23Yeah, I think it is. It's the most confident and
- 56:29economical script. That's the most confident doctor
- 56:33there is, and it's the most economical script the Muff ever
- 56:36writes. It's just up to the really.
- 56:39Peak of its powers at the end of the golden periods.
- 56:43I think I've got this like golden periods in my head from
- 56:46like human nature to about here is when it's like you could
- 56:52consistently watch them and there isn't really a Duff and
- 56:55then it starts to get a bit more hokey.
- 57:01My first thing is, thank God it ain't.
- 57:03Christmas Carol was just now I'm joking.
- 57:04I'm joking. I really hate that as well.
- 57:08I I'm going to say the orphanage scenes because I am one of those
- 57:11old farts that remembers gothic horror Doctor Who, and I just
- 57:14think it's. I'm not sure it's been bettered,
- 57:17if I'm honest. There's the direction in those
- 57:20scenes is really, really stunning.
- 57:21It's so much atmosphere and you got Karen Killen scaring the
- 57:24pants off me, so I love those scenes very much.
- 57:29Next up, I'm going to go for quite an obvious one, but I'm
- 57:33going to go for River Song and Alex Kingston just because.
- 57:38I I'm like everybody got a bit sick of her by the end.
- 57:42But re watching this I was reminded of how good she is and
- 57:46also like the thrill and excitement of the character when
- 57:49you didn't know who she was or you.
- 57:51All you have is that you'll guesses.
- 57:53And I think she puts it in a great performance and adds a
- 57:56different energy to a series of Doctor Who and the energy that
- 58:00we haven't really had before. Yeah, I'm going to say the.
- 58:06The way of defeating the Silence is so clever and in the moment
- 58:11is so good and victorious, and it does what every good Doctor
- 58:15Who resolution does, which is use the monsters powers against
- 58:19them. But yeah, there's something so
- 58:23cool and just when he says kick up the backside for the Silence,
- 58:28you really feel it like absolutely punch.
- 58:31Yeah, it's great. I'm going to say Murray Gold's
- 58:34music, which is stunning and I I think there's like 3 periods of
- 58:39Murray Gold. I think there's the RC D4 years
- 58:41where he's feeling his way in and he's experimenting and
- 58:45there's a lot of really memorable stuff there.
- 58:48Then you get the Matt Smith years, which I think is peak
- 58:50Murray Gold. You know, the Doctor's theme
- 58:53shows that, and that's when he's just on fire and delivering 1
- 58:56banging score after another. And then he's sort of in his
- 58:59twilight years where he's reusing old scores and he's run
- 59:03out of a few ideas in Capoli's time.
- 59:05But this is peak Murray Gold here.
- 59:07And just the music throughout this, it gives it the scale.
- 59:11The music's always helped give doctors Who scale and you got
- 59:13the visuals now, but the music is doing a lot of the work as
- 59:16well. I think it's great.
- 59:19I'm going to pick another obvious one and that is Matt
- 59:22Smith just because I don't always love the Matt Smith Dr.
- 59:25but this episode is reminds me of the the Matt Smith Dr. that I
- 59:29do love and he's he's got that little speech with I know you
- 59:34don't like Joe with the Jammy Dodgers and the fairs and things
- 59:36like that. I love that And then hit this
- 59:39whole resolution where he's just talking and talking and firing
- 59:41off that dialogue at 1,000,000 miles an hour and it's just such
- 59:44an exciting moment and so well delivered and so this is this is
- 59:48the Matt Smith that I. Like before in my mind, in
- 59:51series seven, he just goes off the boil a little bit, so it was
- 59:54good to be reminded of that again.
- 59:59Well, it's not something we talked about at all.
- 1:00:01It's probably because we're talking so much.
- 1:00:03But I think how funny this teapot is this, if you go back
- 1:00:08and watch it, it is just full of gags and funny bits like Mrs.
- 1:00:14Robinson and. The yeah, the joke at the end
- 1:00:18with Nixon and that the time head, there's just loads of
- 1:00:24really, really good funny gags in this really already
- 1:00:28economical script that just keep it flying along and giving you a
- 1:00:34laugh. So yeah, we knew that, we can
- 1:00:35comment on it at the time, but it's so funny.
- 1:00:39And my last one is going to be you said this felt really,
- 1:00:42really confident. I think this is probably the
- 1:00:46boldest. Season and the most ambitious
- 1:00:49season of Doctor Who that has been in the new series, and I
- 1:00:53don't think it works. But props to him for going there
- 1:00:57and trying to tell such an enormous story and a nonlinear
- 1:01:02story and a story about the Doctor's death and a story that
- 1:01:05goes into like dark things like Amy give me birth and losing her
- 1:01:09baby and all of that stuff. This is really like you said.
- 1:01:15If you are bold, then you take the risk of failing.
- 1:01:20If this does fail, I'm still glad he did it because it's more
- 1:01:25interesting than just playing it safe.
- 1:01:29Yeah, I agree. And it is the most bombastic
- 1:01:33Doctor Who pretty much ever is. Yeah, when you come back to this
- 1:01:38era now you're like again having not seen it for a while.
- 1:01:42I was almost a bit shocked at how at the pace of it and the
- 1:01:46the just how loud it was in terms of and I don't mean the
- 1:01:50volume. I just yeah, it's just got so
- 1:01:53much bravado and I'm just sat there sort of going oh wow, this
- 1:01:57is this is a very particular style of Doctor Who because you
- 1:02:00sort of as you go through the series and the showrunners, they
- 1:02:04all sort of morph into one a little bit because the the
- 1:02:07changes tend to not happen overnight but happen over the
- 1:02:09course of a few series so. It's suddenly apart from
- 1:02:13possibly between Moffett and Chibnall.
- 1:02:17But there's, you know, you just don't quite.
- 1:02:20I kind of lump this era and the RTD era together as sort of
- 1:02:24being the same, but they're just not, yeah.
- 1:02:34Not the RTD era. It's more consistent, but it
- 1:02:38plays things safer. But because it has to, not
- 1:02:41really. Because they he was rust.
- 1:02:45He was trying to play it safe. And yeah, it will be adjusted to
- 1:02:49see him now with money. I'm secretly hoping that he
- 1:02:52absolutely ruins the show and gets it canceled.
- 1:02:54Just. So he can say to someone I can.
- 1:02:56Rub it in everyone's faces. That's all.
- 1:03:00I love RTD One and I'm sure RTD 2 will be fantastic.
- 1:03:06I've suddenly come to the conclusion I just love it all,
- 1:03:08you know? I just love some of it a bit
- 1:03:10more than the rest. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:14I think you sort of reached that conclusion.
- 1:03:17And I think, I think once you once you're okay with Doctor Who
- 1:03:20being imperfect and a bit silly, then it's all becomes a lot
- 1:03:25easier to watch. I think there's points in your
- 1:03:27life. There's certainly points in my
- 1:03:28life where I took it very seriously and wanted Doctor Who
- 1:03:31to be. Taken seriously by other people
- 1:03:34now I couldn't give two shits. It's like I just find it a lot
- 1:03:37of fun and you just just take some weight off your shoulders,
- 1:03:41behave like you're Ian Levine the entire time.
- 1:03:43Life must be so fucking hard when you you give that much of a
- 1:03:46shit about some animations from missing television.
- 1:03:50I take it. But then I do always find it,
- 1:03:53like, admirable, like I've said that.
- 1:03:56Like they still cling on to that.
- 1:03:58Yeah, it's because. Yeah, they've lived with that
- 1:04:02weight of trying to, trying to tell everyone this is though,
- 1:04:06this is good, this is bad, this is, and they believe it and it's
- 1:04:11like. To to love something and believe
- 1:04:14something that much with the. Rise of With the rise of
- 1:04:17podcasts and things like that, it's just challenged those
- 1:04:20opinions so much. Definitely, I think.
- 1:04:22And turn the ties on a lot of those stories.
- 1:04:25I've pulled a few out of a hat. The gunfires and things like
- 1:04:28that invasion of the dinosaurs that everyone had written off
- 1:04:31because the books in the the 90s that were published and, you
- 1:04:35know, accepted fan opinion. And that's good.
- 1:04:38It's good. It's good for me to come on and
- 1:04:40talk to you guys that love this stuff and for you to tell me why
- 1:04:44it's so great because I've come away with a renewed appreciation
- 1:04:46of it. I was told as a kid, definitely
- 1:04:50the Doctor Who was only really good at the 70s and then not
- 1:04:53rubbish in the 80s and the 60s. Stuff's OK but it looks a bit
- 1:04:56rubbish because it was made in the 60s and that was popular
- 1:04:59culture consensus, Doctor Who fan consensus, Do you know what?
- 1:05:03The 70s is the period I revisit the least and feels almost the
- 1:05:07most kind of I don't even want to touch it, you know?
- 1:05:10Because it's safe and consistent, yeah.
- 1:05:13But then I'd much rather be watching the Happiness Patrol.
- 1:05:16But the 80s is inconsistent when it hits.
- 1:05:20Yeah, exactly. Or even something like Mind
- 1:05:22Walk. We was having this conversation
- 1:05:24before going well. I don't even know whether I like
- 1:05:27it or not every time I watch it, but.
- 1:05:30I. I certainly have an experience.
- 1:05:33Yeah, yeah, right. Here's the one story that every
- 1:05:37time I watch it, I completely change what I think.
- 1:05:42I think that like, you're right, about 10 years ago, if someone
- 1:05:46said to me they likes, I like fear her.
- 1:05:52But I'll just use it as an example.
- 1:05:53I like fear. You go.
- 1:05:54Yeah, but you don't, don't, do you?
- 1:05:56But then you have people talk about it and you realize that
- 1:05:59they actually do. And there's people out there
- 1:06:01that actually do. And then it does make you come
- 1:06:04to the realization that because I have it with the Jody stuff,
- 1:06:07I'm like, no, people are just putting this on.
- 1:06:10They don't actually like it. And then your hair to your hair,
- 1:06:13like, use talk about it for five or six hours and you're like, I
- 1:06:19actually don't think they are. It's a lot of dreary for seven
- 1:06:25fucking hours. It's a lot of time to waste if
- 1:06:29to to lie about. I know, but but it does
- 1:06:34definitely challenge it and that, yeah, that's great.
- 1:06:37There's only one conclusion we can draw from all this, you
- 1:06:40know, and so we'll have to reconvene and talk about Series
- 1:06:449. I mean, I'm always happy add it
- 1:06:49to the list. I want to do Father's Day with
- 1:06:52you. I want to do Asylum of the
- 1:06:54Daleks with you are. You sure?
- 1:06:55Because I hate both those here as well.
- 1:06:58Mental. Asylum of the Daleks is a
- 1:07:00banger. Oh, Top 25.
- 1:07:02Yeah, easy. Also very good looking episodes,
- 1:07:07yeah. Fucking beautiful.
- 1:07:09Now we also we also said that we were going to try and get the
- 1:07:12three of us to do Spy Fall, didn't we?
- 1:07:16Yeah, for the threesome if we got.
- 1:07:19Spy fall. And then we just said as well.
- 1:07:22Heaven sent hell Ben. There we.
- 1:07:24Go. Perfect.
- 1:07:25Magic. I'm sure we'll pick us some more
- 1:07:28along the way. The rediscovery of Gallifrey and
- 1:07:31the redestruction of Gallifrey Double Billy.
- 1:07:37Well, look, boys, I could talk about Doctor Who with a pair of
- 1:07:40you all night long. But a lass I'm working, it just
- 1:07:46leaves me to say thank you so much for your time.
- 1:07:48It's such a pleasure to talk to both of you.
- 1:07:50It was a hoot. Yes, thank you.
