- 0:10Track and field world juvenile tuned in to our humble servant
- 0:14Mike Cunningham for another extraordinary message or Guild
- 0:18athletic connections. All right, here we go back on
- 0:29the Gil Connections podcast. This is fun, a lot of fun,
- 0:32because today is real special. Every, every time we do this
- 0:34podcast, it's special, I ain't going to lie.
- 0:36But today's a little bit fun, a little bit different for a
- 0:38couple of reasons. First of all, if you're
- 0:40listening to it on the day it dropped, on the day it published
- 0:44or the week that it published, our coach today is already been
- 0:49working. This is August 5th when it
- 0:51publishes and the mixed relays I think starts on August 2nd or
- 0:54August 3rd. So we already like you already
- 0:56know some things that are going to happen about today's athletes
- 0:59that we're going to talk about today.
- 1:01So that's a lot of fun. 2 What makes this is kind of unique, I
- 1:04think, I think this is only the 2nd coach that has been on
- 1:09twice. Way back in the day we had
- 1:12Marissa Chu come on to talk about coach's collab.
- 1:15This is during the COVID obviously.
- 1:17And then we brought her back on to talk about her journey.
- 1:19Today's guest, Joe Lee, Shocker, right?
- 1:23You've already seen the title. Joe Lee is Quincy Wilson's
- 1:25coach. If you haven't heard Joe's
- 1:28story, press pause, same app that you're using right now.
- 1:32Search Jolie Gil athletics and you'll have his episode where we
- 1:35talk about his journey from how we got into coaching, how you
- 1:38got into track, how you got to coaching, the different spots
- 1:40along the way. And we do it.
- 1:42It's kind of interesting. We do touch on Quincy because
- 1:45you know, he's just not he's not now just becoming a star.
- 1:47He's been a star. So we talked a little bit.
- 1:49It was really interesting to me, Joe that we talked about like,
- 1:52you know, you've coached a lot of good athletes.
- 1:54I mean, you know, really good athletes here and then, you
- 1:56know, there's there's these transcendent athletes and we
- 1:59knew back then that, you know, Quincy was probably then.
- 2:01So it was cool to kind of touch base back then about like,
- 2:03what's it like to coach that kind of athlete?
- 2:05What kind of outside influences you, you get wanted and not
- 2:09wanted and things like that. And since that podcast, boy
- 2:13Quincy has has maybe, you know, you certainly knew, but maybe as
- 2:18we all kind of knew, has just continued to rise.
- 2:21And now with his not only athletic endeavors from the
- 2:25Olympic trials, obviously making the team, which is a big deal,
- 2:28making finals, which is a big deal set in the what was it
- 2:30under 16 world record, those kind.
- 2:33Of. Yeah, under 18.
- 2:34Those are all amazing. I think he really captured the
- 2:39heart, if you will, of America with his interviews.
- 2:41I think that's really like, he was one thing, what his feet
- 2:44were doing on the track, his heart and soul when it came to
- 2:48the interviews, I think people were just like, Oh my gosh, like
- 2:51this is a good kid. Like, Oh yeah, he's, he's
- 2:53awesome. But he's a good kid.
- 2:55Like, it's quite amazing. So this will be a lot of fun.
- 2:58What we did today is I went out to, you know, where I live, I
- 3:01live on social media, right? So I went out to Twitter, went
- 3:03out to Facebook and said, hey, we're going to have Quincy's
- 3:06coach here, we're going to do AQ and AI.
- 3:08Really, I probably have zero questions to ask today because I
- 3:12got so many from Twitter and Facebook.
- 3:14And so we've kind of put them in a little bit of an order.
- 3:16And I think we're just going to go through and have some fun
- 3:18and, and just kind of answer questions.
- 3:20We'll, we'll tell you who, if you participated, we'll tell you
- 3:22who the tweet or the Facebook post is from.
- 3:25And then we'll kind of just go from there.
- 3:26Joe, does that sound sound fair to you?
- 3:29Yeah, Mike, it sounds great. First of all, it's great to be
- 3:31back with you. And you know, you're my guy, so
- 3:35I am excited to finally be back with you and I just need to
- 3:38figure out an excuse or reason to come on 1/3 time so I can
- 3:43make history and beat Coach Chu, who's an amazing person anyway.
- 3:47But I just got to find out an excuse.
- 3:49Maybe I can go in like, I don't know, shine your discus behind
- 3:53you. It's when it's more than one.
- 3:55Is it this guy? Yeah, you know, that's a big
- 3:57argument around here, discuses this guy.
- 3:59No, no, we, these are things that we talked about here.
- 4:02Hey, well, let's get it on wax right here, right now.
- 4:03How about this? Let's make history.
- 4:05Let's make it 3. We'll set it in a row.
- 4:07Let's make it 3. Let's have you and we'll talk to
- 4:10Quincy, maybe Quincy as well. But how about post Olympics?
- 4:14I, I think a lot of people would like to know what's the Olympic
- 4:16experience like? You know, it's one thing to hear
- 4:19from a 25 to 30 year old professional who's been to
- 4:22Monaco and the Paris DL and things like that.
- 4:24How about a high school kid who I loved his interview, doesn't
- 4:28even know when he's going to get his driver's license by the way,
- 4:30because he's so busy with these things.
- 4:32How does a kid who doesn't even have his driver's license,
- 4:34what's that experience look like?
- 4:35What's that experience look like from the coaching lens maybe?
- 4:37How about that? How about we come back and we,
- 4:39we wrap things up. I don't even say wrap it up
- 4:42because, you know, we got a long career here with him and with
- 4:44him, but we come back and we learn about the Olympic
- 4:47experience. How's that sound?
- 4:48Yeah, man, if we can work that out, I'd love to do it.
- 4:51And yeah, it's, it's crazy because he's he's at the ripe
- 4:55old age of 16. You know, he's he's just getting
- 4:59started. It's amazing it.
- 5:01Is awesome. It is awesome.
- 5:02Are are you are you going? Yeah.
- 5:05Yeah, OK, Good, good, good. Are you going?
- 5:07No, man, I. No, what are you doing, man?
- 5:10It's too. Far it's.
- 5:12Too far. We've got we've got these things
- 5:15underground. They're called airplanes, man.
- 5:17I'm. Sure, you.
- 5:18I'm sure you have AAG five or something at your disposal.
- 5:23Not at all. I if the only, no, I was going
- 5:26to make a really bad joke about that song.
- 5:28G6 and G5, I'm not even going to go there.
- 5:30Let's hop right into a joke because they're not here to
- 5:32listen to me. So got a lot of great questions
- 5:35and feedback. Appreciate everybody's
- 5:37participation here through Twitter and Facebook.
- 5:40We're going to go like in a little bit of order here.
- 5:42So I kind of want to just start right off the bat.
- 5:45You know, one of the questions, one of the thoughts that we get
- 5:48when you hear about a kid like Quincy and what he's running and
- 5:51he's, you know, he's transcended and he's doing things that, you
- 5:53know, literally no one has done. So there's a lot of questions
- 5:56about, well, he's a, you know, a sophomore, just finished his
- 5:59sophomore years. He come back to school.
- 6:00Is he going to GoPro? There's this whole, you know,
- 6:02there's New Balance, which we're going to talk a little bit about
- 6:04the NIL type things like that. So right off the bat, Jimmy Dean
- 6:07over on Twitter asked I love it. You know, it's on one hand
- 6:10there's a little bit of hutzpah for asking this question because
- 6:13it's like, well, you know, it's not your business.
- 6:14You'll know when it the the press release comes out.
- 6:17But Jimmy just comes straight out and says that hey man, ask
- 6:20Joe. When is it?
- 6:21Well, actually he says ask Joe when is he going pro?
- 6:23Maybe he meant you. I don't know, but I.
- 6:25I think he meant me. I assume he meant Quincy.
- 6:28Well, listen, with a name like Jimmy Dean, you know, he
- 6:31probably knows that I'm going pro and something non athletic.
- 6:34So well, I mean officer means Quincy, you know, when is he
- 6:40going pro? I mean, you know, that's up to
- 6:42him and and you know, right now he's in high school and he's
- 6:46having fun. So, you know, if any broke don't
- 6:48fix it kind of deal, we definitely coming back to high
- 6:51school. So you can break that news, if
- 6:53you will. People are talking about it.
- 6:55His mom jumped on on social media.
- 6:58We try not to respond on social media, but that one she did
- 7:01respond like no, he's going back to high school because people
- 7:04talk about, but now that he's pro, no, he's just running
- 7:07against per athletes. There is a difference.
- 7:09I believe he has a pro mindset. You know he's he's because he's
- 7:13going in and he's not intimidated or afraid one bit
- 7:17because it's just competition though.
- 7:20He's lining up and lacing his shoes up just like everyone
- 7:23else's. We've heard him say it and he's
- 7:25going out there being a force of competitive can be.
- 7:27It's almost like if you're at the basketball court and you
- 7:30know, you see some guys playing ball and you see the young guy
- 7:33coming through and he's given everything he had handed to hang
- 7:36on the court with the big dogs. So he's not going pro.
- 7:40And eventually if he chooses to go pro because it's not bad, you
- 7:44know, it's not, it doesn't go without saying that he could
- 7:46choose a different grade. I mean, he's so, so smart and
- 7:49he's so talented. I mean, he's so contagious with
- 7:52just his, his personality and his leadership.
- 7:54I mean, he could be CEO of the company.
- 7:56He can start his own company. He could, you know, go into
- 7:59whatever you wanted to do. The Sky's the limit for for that
- 8:03young man, you know. But right now we're having fun
- 8:06as a high school athlete going into places that people didn't
- 8:10think we would be, but here we are.
- 8:13That leads me to this next question here.
- 8:16I'm going to kind of, I'm going to read the question and then
- 8:18focus the question. So DRH track observer says, and
- 8:22and this is a question we're not going to answer, who is paying
- 8:24his tuition and other expenses at your school?
- 8:26That's not any of our business. I don't.
- 8:28I'm Mr. D. Or Mr. I can answer it.
- 8:30I'll answer it his parents. OK, there you go.
- 8:34That's what I assume. But again, you know, like, this
- 8:36is a school. This is a high school, right?
- 8:38Right. Yeah.
- 8:39His parents, right? So he continues on and says, I
- 8:41understand he already signed a professional contract.
- 8:43Pause. We'll, we'll get to that in a
- 8:44second. Can he still go to college on
- 8:46scholarship and delay his professional career?
- 8:48What I'm assuming DRH track observer says when he says that
- 8:52he's our, I understand he already signed a a professional
- 8:54career. We do know that Quincy signed an
- 8:58NIL deal with New Balance. I believe I I could be getting
- 9:01that incorrect as well. So I think maybe that's what
- 9:03he's thinking. That doesn't affect his college
- 9:07eligibility, correct? No Nils for just for anybody
- 9:10that that's that's separate. It's this new, new new deal
- 9:13we're in and we're excited about it just for everybody.
- 9:16I mean, you know, I've been a proponent for years.
- 9:18You know, we've talked about this, I think it was on our last
- 9:20podcast that, you know, just the name, the English, the likeness
- 9:24of athletes. I go all the way back to the
- 9:26Jalen Rose story that I told where he's, you know, in the
- 9:29mall and he didn't have any money in his pocket.
- 9:31He's hungry and he passes by the Foot Locker and he sees his
- 9:34Michigan jersey being sold for like 120 bucks and he saw none
- 9:37of that. So I mean, yeah, I mean the Nils
- 9:41are are what they are. I don't get into that side on on
- 9:43this coach. So I don't have any workings
- 9:46around that kind of thing. But just for any any athlete in
- 9:50general who signs in NIL, if you can read up on it, it's no
- 9:54secret. It doesn't impact your
- 9:56eligibility because it's, it's separate and it's, it's done
- 10:00totally outside of of the college experience.
- 10:04So that's that's that has nothing to do with his
- 10:06eligibility for college or pro or anything else.
- 10:09Yeah, I think NIL is still so new.
- 10:11I know we throw around those 3 letters and everyday vernacular
- 10:14now, but I think it is still so new that there's still confusion
- 10:16amongst even us in regards to the Track World of, well, is
- 10:20that professional or is that NIL?
- 10:22How does that affect? So it's, I think it's a fair
- 10:23question for a, for a high school kid.
- 10:25Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 10:27Brandon, this might be this has to be just a simple yes.
- 10:29And we can move on to the next question.
- 10:30Brandon LeBlanc on Twitter asked, has he been approached by
- 10:33any major sponsors about turning pro?
- 10:35I just assume that's a yes. You know, and I'll be honest, I
- 10:41don't know, I bet my my focus here, Mike, I'm telling you, my
- 10:46focus is to try to help him be the best athlete he can be and,
- 10:51you know, partner with his parents and them being the lead
- 10:53on that, being the best person he can be.
- 10:55Like I don't like like he's signed with WMA as we know about
- 11:00that. That's, that's, that's all them
- 11:02like I'm a track coach and, you know, a month ago, no one was
- 11:05asking of these questions or maybe they were, but they
- 11:07weren't asking at this level. So we're not doing anything any
- 11:10different. I mean, you know, we practiced
- 11:13yesterday and and, you know, he's there are some younger kids
- 11:16out there at the training session.
- 11:18Some of my private training kids were there and he's jumping in
- 11:21and he's just helping coach them without even being asking.
- 11:24He's just a great human being. So love that you know that that
- 11:28that you know, I don't get into any of that.
- 11:29If if it's happening, I don't know about it.
- 11:31And quite frankly, I don't want to know.
- 11:33I don't need to know. What I need to know is how fast
- 11:36you coming through your 200 so we can make sure that we drop
- 11:38this quarterback. Love it, I love it we continue
- 11:42to evolve in the questions Dwight love ask.
- 11:45How many Division One letters offers does Quincy have?
- 11:48I mean, I assume again, you know, sometimes there's
- 11:52assumptions and you know what it's assuming does, but I assume
- 11:54every College in this country has done the letter and the the
- 11:59questionnaire, whatever, whatever, whatever we're doing
- 12:01for recruiting. He's getting everything from
- 12:02everybody at this point. So I know.
- 12:08Don't tell me, don't tell me. You don't hear from college
- 12:10coaches. No, I do.
- 12:12Well, so you want to hear the crazy thing?
- 12:14The college coaches that I do talk to and again, because you
- 12:16know, our program is pretty successful.
- 12:18So I talked to college coaches, you know, probably every day
- 12:21something or the other, right? Most of them assume he's going
- 12:25pro, so they don't even ask me about him.
- 12:27Like like and matter of fact, some I have a friend who a very
- 12:32good friend of mine who's a coach at at one of the top
- 12:35colleges. And we actually got into a
- 12:37debate that that this coach was telling me why did like why it's
- 12:41a waste of time and why I'm going to why he's going to
- 12:44GoPro. And I'm like, no, like that
- 12:46hasn't been decided yet. You know, he's just finished his
- 12:49sophomore in high school. Like Joe, you don't understand.
- 12:52He's going pro. I'm like, how you going to tell
- 12:54me the kid? Like they're arguing me down.
- 12:56I'm like OK so it was all in good fun but.
- 13:01I mean the. The general consensus is that
- 13:03he's going to go pro out of high school, but that's not been
- 13:05decided. I could tell you that
- 13:06definitively, at least not where I've been in the conversation.
- 13:09If it's been and decided with his family and his parents
- 13:12separately, you know, that's, that's, that's their right and
- 13:15their that's their choice. And I fully support that.
- 13:18But you know, I mean, you know, not a lot of colleges ask me
- 13:22about him. Believe it or not, that's that's
- 13:23the truth. That's the guy that I wouldn't
- 13:25lie about. Don't need to lie about it, but
- 13:27most just assume he's going pro and they move on to hey, well,
- 13:30tell me about this this. I would hope, I would hope Nils
- 13:34help. You know, again, we're talking
- 13:35about a very small amount of people per year.
- 13:37If even if it is all every year that I can GoPro out of high
- 13:41school, I will. I'm hopeful that NIL helps drive
- 13:45people still to college, whether it's for a year or two or
- 13:47anything like that. I just think, you know, I'd love
- 13:49to be able to root on Quincy with the you know, insert your
- 13:53favorite school here Jersey. I'll just be neat, you know, to
- 13:56see that. Then let him continue going pro
- 13:57because again, he is, you know, talk about senior year.
- 14:00He's 18 for Crown. Let him let him have some
- 14:02college experience. So appreciate that question
- 14:05there. Brandon Nate is starting to help
- 14:06us bridge from the whole pro Quincy talk to more of you Joe
- 14:10in the relationship. Nate Messner asked Quincy has
- 14:13two more years of high school. See Nate already heard this
- 14:15whole podcast so he knows and we'll also be getting invited to
- 14:19big pro meets next season. Assuming he will run at high
- 14:22school level, Assuming he will run less at the high school
- 14:25level. Even if he doesn't, GoPro
- 14:26Curious Joe's thoughts on that balance.
- 14:30Also, Congrats. Hope he stays with his coach for
- 14:32years to come if that's best. So I think the question here
- 14:35Nate is asking here is how do you balance if he is going to be
- 14:39invited to more bigger pro invitationals for these next two
- 14:43years, how do you balance? There's still a job to get done
- 14:45at the high school level. How do you balance, you know,
- 14:48those two maybe competing priorities?
- 14:52Yeah, Yeah. Also good question.
- 14:55The thing with Quincy and we talked about this all to Mike,
- 14:57we're not going to chase anybody else's plan.
- 15:00Like we we've done well thus far doing it like our way and if
- 15:05it's not broke, don't fix it, right.
- 15:07So people have different, you know, opinions, people have
- 15:09different opportunities and all that kind of things.
- 15:12But like what we literally just had this conversation a week ago
- 15:15like, you know, like let's stick to what we do and let's stick to
- 15:18our plan because you know it, it kind of works, right?
- 15:22So it doesn't mean that we don't look at other opportunities,
- 15:24whether it be hey, go to this meet or that meet, But you know
- 15:27what, what let's let's make sure we keep the main thing, the main
- 15:30thing. He's he's, he's a very much a
- 15:33team guy. So people don't realize this
- 15:34about him. Like he's not a me first or me
- 15:37centered individual, you know, that starts to get back with his
- 15:40parents and they're very, their family is very tight knit, mom,
- 15:45dad and sister and, and and grandparents, your whole mind.
- 15:49So like, you know, he, he loves being on a team with what he
- 15:53calls his brothers and his sisters.
- 15:54And you know, there, there's a joy.
- 15:56I, I literally watch him being a trackmates, like pausing his
- 16:01warm up to cheer on his teammates on the track and
- 16:03nationally for something like that.
- 16:04So I think there's something to be said about that.
- 16:06And, and when we get in this whole pro pro pro thing, like
- 16:09that's what like what, what we want, right?
- 16:12Or when I say we, I'm talking about the, the fans, the
- 16:14outside, you know, we, we went, how far can he go?
- 16:16If he does it, How can he go to that?
- 16:18There's some things you can't put a price tag or or or or or a
- 16:22limitation on. And I would say this, and I
- 16:24don't know how you feel about Mike, but a lot of that happens
- 16:26when you're doing things with your peers or your high school
- 16:29teammates or your friends and you only get one opportunity.
- 16:32So I don't believe in rushing anybody through that.
- 16:35Let them enjoy it. The money will always be there.
- 16:38The opportunities will always be there if it's something that
- 16:42that's going to, that that's meant to be, but enjoy what
- 16:45you're doing now because really you only get one shot at it.
- 16:48And I, I, I love the fact that that's how he's wired and
- 16:52centered. Does it mean we won't run a few
- 16:54pro races? That doesn't mean that, but
- 16:56we're not chasing that. He, he's not a cloud chaser.
- 16:59Neither am I and, and, and, or nor is the way we develop our
- 17:02program. We're just going to grind, work
- 17:04at it. And then we'll look at the
- 17:06opportunities that are before us and we'll choose the best ones
- 17:09for him, not for what somebody else says are the best ones, the
- 17:12ones that work with our plan. I love hearing that team first
- 17:17attitude with him. You know, I, I got to see that
- 17:19evidence. The body.
- 17:21I watched his body language more than the performance at this
- 17:25year's pin relays. For you guys that weren't at pin
- 17:28relays this year, in the four by four in the qualifying, in the
- 17:30final, there was a bump. At his exchange where he was
- 17:33getting the baton, there was a bump both times.
- 17:36It's crazy that happened 2 times.
- 17:37I mean just it's crazy happens once it happens twice the the
- 17:40baton drops right as he's getting the baton.
- 17:43So he's, you know, he goes and you know, this is killer time.
- 17:46This is pen relays that he, you know, this ain't him just
- 17:48smoking everybody. There's a lot of good kids
- 17:50there. And so the baton drops.
- 17:52So he goes from, I can't remember what place you guys
- 17:53were in, but you know, a good position to 2030 meters behind
- 17:57automatically because of the baton drop.
- 18:00And each time there was no like I said, I watched his bite, you
- 18:05know, picking up the baton, then obviously his running.
- 18:08And then after I really focused on the after, like there was no
- 18:11like, I'll just say it, pissed offness.
- 18:14There was no shunning of teammates.
- 18:16Like, what are you guys doing to me?
- 18:17And then it happened again the finals, which then you could
- 18:19really be like, what are you guys?
- 18:21What the heck is going on here, guys?
- 18:23No, it was all right. Well, that's what we had to do.
- 18:25That's that's what I did. And I rose to the channel.
- 18:27I mean, it was it was cool to see that.
- 18:29And so it's awesome to hear that coming together as well.
- 18:32That paints a great picture of Quinn Quincy, the person, not
- 18:35just Quincy, the 44 point that's, you know, we, we get
- 18:38caught up in people's roles and we forget that this is a human,
- 18:41an individual, a 16 year old kid.
- 18:43So I love hearing that. So let me jump in and let me let
- 18:45me give you the the insight on I don't think I shared the story
- 18:48like what actually happened that so because you're like, see, you
- 18:52get the exclusive, right. So the plan at Penn Relays was
- 18:57to go in there and for him to run 47.
- 18:59We're going to crew the 47. That sounds crazy.
- 19:02I know some of us that's like our PRS, but we're going to
- 19:04cruise a 47. That was the plan.
- 19:08So our first leg, Alex. He he's 6 foot 2.
- 19:11And he they actually added an additional team to the heat,
- 19:16which made it even more cumbersome.
- 19:18So you know, Penry laces, you know, waterfall start.
- 19:20You have like, you know, ton of teams you're breaking for lining
- 19:23the out of the team, which didn't help with the traffic.
- 19:26He gets clipped, hits the ground stick flies somewhere he has to
- 19:31first of all, I want to shout him out because he has to get
- 19:34his wherewithal, figure out where he is, find the stick, get
- 19:38back up, re accelerate and get back in the race.
- 19:41And we were at that point in time somewhere middle of the
- 19:43pack. We were dead last when he gets
- 19:45sick. So at that point I happened to
- 19:48be at the finish line and he looked at me and I looked back
- 19:53at him and I gave him the the signal that we have like go, let
- 19:57it go for it. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:59So and he knows what it is and and he just or he just nodding
- 20:02his head. I'd have to say a word to it.
- 20:05So by the time, because again, we're we try to prepare for
- 20:09anything. We didn't know that would
- 20:10happen, but we were ready. And I didn't literally didn't
- 20:13have to say a word. So we're coming back in, the
- 20:15guys are fighting, I mean, fighting back into to get us
- 20:19into the race. And they did.
- 20:21And he got the baton like eighth, you know, And then
- 20:24that's where, in the words of somebody from the Tangulo stuff,
- 20:29the legend of Quincy Wilson began to arrive because he went
- 20:32out there and split 44 three when we wanted to click 45 or 47
- 20:36rather. So rushed him out of there
- 20:38because then we got a final in a couple of hours.
- 20:39And then, Oh my goodness, like that was not the plan.
- 20:42You know, he's tired now. And we know we're going to do it
- 20:44again because Jamaicans, what they'll do, they will they'll
- 20:47they'll hide legs, you know, and they'll, they'll pull it loaded
- 20:51in the finals. So that was part of the strategy
- 20:53on just having him cruise around.
- 20:54But, you know, I know the kid. So it was like, look, if you got
- 20:57to do 44 again, he'll do it. And same thing.
- 21:00Actually, a similar thing happened.
- 21:02We got flipped. One of the Jamaican teams, a guy
- 21:04fell in front of our guy and just our guy tumbled over him.
- 21:09We hit the ground again. So two times in one day, but
- 21:12unfortunate, but same thing. He refused to quit and I didn't
- 21:17have to give him a signal at that time because the final, we
- 21:20already know what to do. And he came out there split 44,
- 21:24six. We didn't win, but we got the
- 21:27respect, I think of the nation and, and a lot of and even
- 21:30internationally on which because of the fight of not just Quincy,
- 21:33but all the kids. Because one of the things I love
- 21:35about sport is you can have a great athlete, you can have
- 21:37Michael Jordan, but you better have a team and you guys have
- 21:40LeBron James better have a team and we have a team.
- 21:42And without that team, and at least with in respect to these
- 21:46relays and, and at Penn Relays in particular, there is no story
- 21:50of, of what Quincy Wilson knows or Bullis does.
- 21:54But they all do it together. And I'm so proud of all of them
- 21:57for their fight for each other. I got goosebumps here and you
- 22:01tell that story of the knot, you know, because to me, that
- 22:04communication, that silent communication, that is the
- 22:07relationship of athlete and coach.
- 22:09We we've we've battled before many times, not not just in
- 22:12meets, by the way, in practice. We have that rapport, literally
- 22:16just the eyes meeting each other because think about what he said
- 22:19there, guys, You know, Quincy gets up and sees coach lead like
- 22:23that's hard enough in in the mixed of, you know, a track
- 22:25meet, a big track meet like Penn release, but he was able to both
- 22:28hone each other in on their, you know, get their eye lock and
- 22:31then just a simple head nod and Q new immediately.
- 22:36What what that meant? Not if you don't know your
- 22:40athlete and your athlete doesn't know you, that could be the nod
- 22:42of like, Yep, it's OK, bro, take it easy.
- 22:44We don't need to kill ourselves. We'll find another race one day,
- 22:47You know, long term plan, like all that could be conceivable.
- 22:50But it was no, it was the knowledge of like, oh, OK, it's
- 22:53go time coach. I just love that.
- 22:55It gives me goosebumps that that that that relationship, that
- 22:58man, I love it. I love it.
- 22:58All right, well, Speaking of a relationship, let's keep moving
- 23:01on here on our questions. Keith Whitman, good friend of
- 23:03the Gill podcast here. His wife has been on the show,
- 23:05but not him. So maybe maybe he doesn't like
- 23:07me as much as I like him. But Keith says, and I love Keith
- 23:11as a coach's coach man. And Keith says, I don't have any
- 23:13questions, but I do admire how Joe constructed the meat
- 23:16schedule for Quincy high quality meats without too much meat
- 23:19volume. I'm convinced this was a factor
- 23:21in his summer of success. Well done, coach Lee.
- 23:24So I just, there's no question. I just wanted to make sure you
- 23:26knew that there are other coaches out there that are
- 23:29giving you and Quincy the kudos that you guys deserve.
- 23:31It's not all the critique that we sometimes get from social
- 23:35media and stuff. So I I just thought it was
- 23:36important for me to read. That thanks, Keith.
- 23:37I appreciate that. And thank you too, Mike.
- 23:40Yeah. And that's, that's kind of what
- 23:41we did. You know, we, we, we, we, we,
- 23:44we're in it for a long haul, not just for Quincy, but for all of
- 23:46our kids. You know, we, we, we
- 23:48particularly strategize. We, we draw out everything on
- 23:52our, on our annual plan where we can run our fastest when it
- 23:55counts most. So that's kind of what we do.
- 23:58And it's, it's been working. That's, you know, like what
- 24:02we're what we're having. So yeah, don't forget, I know
- 24:06Coach Lee and Bolas is getting a lot of pub and publicity, which
- 24:10they all deserve because of Quincy and Quincy deserves
- 24:13everything. He's getting positive.
- 24:16Do some research on bullis. This is not the one hit wonder
- 24:20type of thing. Now he's never we're going to be
- 24:22fair. Julie's never had another 44
- 24:24point kid in high school. That's the Unicorn here.
- 24:27But don't sleep. He meant what he said.
- 24:30College coaches are calling him every day because he's got a a
- 24:33stable. He does an amazing job.
- 24:35And that's like that's where I encourage you to go back and
- 24:36listen to his episode. Does a great job.
- 24:39And we have and we have two Olympians too.
- 24:40By the way, Mike, I got to give Masai Russell a shout out.
- 24:43Like, like, that's the crazy thing is like she's the Olympic
- 24:47trials champion. That's right.
- 24:48And in the in the forget toughest event, the toughest,
- 24:52there's no question we can have an argument about that.
- 24:55Yeah, right. So now we we won't have an
- 24:57argument because I'll just be quiet.
- 24:59It's the toughest event. The 100 meter hurdles.
- 25:01You got people who would have literally made the final who
- 25:05didn't make the team. I don't hear if they would have
- 25:08made the final, like 4th place is 12/3 and all that.
- 25:11Please, let's not have the conversation, right?
- 25:14Amen. So yeah.
- 25:15So anyway, yeah. So Chris Bowen, Chris Bowen
- 25:20says, and this is, I love this question because I'm like, I'm
- 25:23Uber curious about this too. Chris Bowen says.
- 25:25Describe the moment when you knew that Quincy was special.
- 25:34Was there a workout? Was there a meet?
- 25:36Was there a meeting? Where did you like oh, wait a
- 25:39minute, I know you know you probably had some ideas that you
- 25:41know the kid would be good. When did you know special?
- 25:46Well, I'll answer it in, in, in two parts.
- 25:48So number one, I'll answer it which is the most special thing
- 25:53about him. That's his character.
- 25:54Like when I first met him, which was when he was in 8th grade,
- 25:58his mother, people now they're hearing the story more, but
- 26:03it's, it's been the truth all the way through.
- 26:05Like we didn't recruit Quincy, Quincy's mother and and father.
- 26:08They're very calculated. Again, they're very tight bed
- 26:11family and they're they're they're they're, they're awesome
- 26:14people. And they do their research in
- 26:15their homework, super educated. So they came, mom specifically
- 26:20came to me and and said that, Hey, are you Coach Lee?
- 26:24And I'm like, yeah, what's going on?
- 26:28And then she shared me that she wants Prince becoming bullish.
- 26:30And you know, I didn't know that, you know, I I didn't know
- 26:33them prior to that nor that I knew that they even knew us.
- 26:36So when I met him, she brought him over late after she kind of
- 26:39did her, you know, her Mama thing, which every mom should
- 26:42do. You better be vetting these
- 26:43coaches, whether it's, you know, age group, high school, college
- 26:46or pro, that's your coaches goes this is your child.
- 26:49At the end of the day, they do not belong to the coach.
- 26:52They belong to your family. So anyway, that's all that.
- 26:54But when I met him, the same thing you all seeing on on on on
- 26:59camera is the same thing I saw behind the scenes.
- 27:02Yes, Sir, no, Sir, thank you, Sir.
- 27:06Look me in the eye, huge smile. What's your GPA 4 point O Sir.
- 27:11I mean like that sounds like this kid is pretty special
- 27:14because when you blend that with what you're already seeing on
- 27:17the track, like that's that that's rare.
- 27:19That's rare air that you have the the academic performance,
- 27:24the athletic success and the character where you're like,
- 27:29wow, this kid is is something special.
- 27:30So that's why I first knew him special as an individual, as a
- 27:32human being. As far as with respect to his
- 27:39athletic success, Gosh, the choose one, I would probably
- 27:44say. So freshman year I play
- 27:47football, right? And yeah, yeah, most people
- 27:50don't know he played football and he actually was very good.
- 27:52And he's very he he was a baller because the same mindset he has
- 27:56a little track, it's the same mindset that he took it onto the
- 27:58football field. Now again, at 130 lbs, like,
- 28:04dude, like you might want to slow down a little bit.
- 28:06He knows. You better be fast.
- 28:08Yeah exactly. And and he only knows 1 speed.
- 28:11So, so he, we, we always make our kids, if they play football
- 28:17here, take three weeks off, like no exception, like you have to
- 28:21take a break or in any sport in the fall.
- 28:24So when he came out, you know, he was just, he was not, he
- 28:28didn't, he wasn't in any kind of shape because he got injured a
- 28:30little bit early. So he had to end his football
- 28:32season sooner than anticipated. Then we still made him take the
- 28:35break. And then he actually got sick.
- 28:37I believe I'm not mistaken. Mama probably told me what
- 28:40happened. I think it's something was going
- 28:42on. So he had just a lot of time off
- 28:45and he's out of shape. He's not playing football, he's
- 28:47not training with me, he's sick, he's not doing anything for a
- 28:51good month, month and 1/2 he finally comes up to practice and
- 28:56he the first workout he's giving him, he had and he's passing
- 28:59out. He's going up, he's getting up,
- 29:02falling back. I don't even literally pass.
- 29:03I'm falling down and getting back.
- 29:04I'm like this kid, just there's something about that he just
- 29:07won't quit. And at the end of the practice,
- 29:10like, I'm sorry, Sir, I'll do better, I'll get better.
- 29:13I'll be better next time. So you better.
- 29:17I'm like, dude, I I wouldn't have got backed off at the first
- 29:19one because I'm like, we are, you know, we, we are notorious
- 29:23for, for getting the work in. So that's probably when I knew
- 29:27he was special. And then I would say the first
- 29:29time we're just, it really hit me, hit me.
- 29:32It has to be. It's still probably my favorite
- 29:34race of his. It's got to be the New Balance
- 29:38nationals from 2023 is freshman year.
- 29:42I mean, again, the, the guys who were supposed to win it, one guy
- 29:46was US in the three all time, except the other guy was like US
- 29:50top ten all time. And then there's this little
- 29:52freshman and they go out there in that race, they're just going
- 29:55out these two heavyweights, boom, boom, boom.
- 29:57And then 20 meters behind you see the little freshman.
- 30:01And then what about 150 meters ago, the little freshman started
- 30:06to close the gap a little bit. And you know, it's like, oh,
- 30:07that's nice, that's cute. He's going to be, you know, he's
- 30:09going to be in the frame, right? Because he wasn't in the frame
- 30:12before then. And before you know it, this
- 30:15little joker starts to close with 100 meters to go and the
- 30:19crowd goes berserk. And I'm going berserk too.
- 30:24I'm like, Oh my God, come on, come on, come on.
- 30:27And by the time he gets on a straightaway, everybody's losing
- 30:30their mind and he is running past these dudes, crosses the
- 30:34finish line. They have, which I love a ton of
- 30:36things, but new dogs, they do like the pyrotechnics and all
- 30:40that, like the sparklers in the air.
- 30:42He's going through that, crashes through the finish line,
- 30:45everybody goes nuts. I started running at that time.
- 30:48I had an injury, which he makes fun of me about.
- 30:51It's literally the first time I ran in like a year because my
- 30:55leg and my hip were messed up. And I remember just losing my
- 31:00mind and I'm looking at him and I, I got to him and he crossed
- 31:04the line, the finish line like this.
- 31:07He had a look on his face like, Oh yeah, I didn't know.
- 31:10I didn't know what's going to happen.
- 31:11He wasn't like, Oh my gosh, I won.
- 31:13I can like, look, he had this look like, you know, this is I'm
- 31:17here. And that's what I needed a
- 31:21special competitively. But the other two matter just as
- 31:25much in my world, and we're having a great time.
- 31:28That's cool, man. I love that.
- 31:29I do. I tell you what, guys, if you're
- 31:31listening, if you have listened to Joe Lee's episode, what?
- 31:36I appreciate Joe and I expected this, but you never know a lot
- 31:40of consistency from you, my friend, in regards to what's
- 31:44important to you, what's important to you, the program,
- 31:46how you lead that program. So I appreciate hearing that.
- 31:48It's very easy to get caught up. You know, we were talking before
- 31:51we hit record about, you know, if, if Joe or I had run what
- 31:54Quincy's run at that age, like, you know, you couldn't talk to
- 31:56me about 16 running, that's 26 running with Quincy runs.
- 32:01You know, you wouldn't be able to talk to my head would be
- 32:02bigger than I'll get out. And so it's it, you know, we
- 32:06forget sometimes. Again, we're humans.
- 32:07There's a human behind Quincy coaching him.
- 32:09It's really easy for Joe right now.
- 32:11It's really easy for you, Joe, to be like, hey, man, you can't
- 32:13say nothing to me. Look what I'm producing.
- 32:15You ain't produce that, you know, like you could get the big
- 32:17head. So I do appreciate the
- 32:19consistency of like here are the values and morals that matter in
- 32:22our program. And if God give you the talent,
- 32:25then you'll run super fast because the, the coaching is
- 32:27going to be there. But you know, you got to have
- 32:28the, I can't give you the, the genetic talent that comes from
- 32:31your parents, but I can give you the leadership and I can give
- 32:34you the training and the leadership of grades and morals
- 32:38and ethics and things like that. So I appreciate that
- 32:41consistency. Joe just kind of hit me as like,
- 32:42man, I've, I've heard the same line before.
- 32:46And that's a good thing. You know, in this case, I
- 32:48appreciate hearing that. OK, last question about you and
- 32:53really this is all about you chapter Nichols over at Twitter
- 32:56says. Would you?
- 32:57Ever. Would you ever consider taking
- 33:01your coaching to the collegiate level?
- 33:04Now that's an interesting question and I say that because
- 33:09I think it gives a little bit of an air of that college is better
- 33:12than high school coaching. So my, you know, if you know me
- 33:15and my consistency here real quick, that is not true.
- 33:18It is a it is a different level and comes with different things.
- 33:21And you know, I still say to this day, let's not sleep on our
- 33:25high school coaches. Not only are they coaching and
- 33:26producing kids like Quincy and there's many other great
- 33:29athletes out there as well in the high school level, they're
- 33:31also teaching and working and having relationship and family
- 33:35like we're not, they're not 24/7 doing this and look what they're
- 33:38doing. So, So what do you think?
- 33:40What, what, what's chapter here? He says you, you think about
- 33:43going to college, you're going to you're going to let Quincy go
- 33:45on his own for the next two years and you're going to go
- 33:47start coaching college. No, that's definitely not the
- 33:51plan. I will say this, though, and
- 33:53I'll tag along with your, your sentiment about, you know, the
- 33:56perception of high school coaches versus college and even
- 33:59pros. I think you have to, you have to
- 34:03like specify the individual as opposed to painting everybody
- 34:07with such a broad brush on both sides.
- 34:10I think there's some really great college coaches or
- 34:15assuming high school coaches and there's some not so great high
- 34:18school coaches. You know, there's some really
- 34:19great college coaches, not so great and everybody.
- 34:21So everybody is different. So just to say, well, you're a
- 34:23high school coach, you know, you're, you know, go do
- 34:27something better than coaching high school.
- 34:28Well, I think we're coaching human beings at the end of the
- 34:31day, we're coaching people. So let's, let's, let's take all
- 34:34the, the labels and the, you know, the, the sentiments, all
- 34:37of it. Let's just deal with, can you
- 34:39communicate effectively to people so that they can achieve
- 34:44their goals and dreams? Right.
- 34:46And communication has to do with a couple things, obviously #1
- 34:49knowing what you're talking about, right?
- 34:52You got to know what you're talking about.
- 34:53Do I understand the subject matter #2 do I understand the,
- 34:59the, the person that I'm communicating to?
- 35:01Do do I know the person like? So much of coaching.
- 35:04Is about if they say it's, it's more about the Jane James and
- 35:08Joe's and the XS and OS. Like that's what it is like.
- 35:11I wish coaches would get that. You know, the old adage that
- 35:15people don't care how much you know to they know how much you
- 35:18care. Like that matter.
- 35:20That's coaching. It's, it's, it's, it's, it's
- 35:22leadership, it's mentorship, it's influence.
- 35:24It's, it's collaboration. I'm very big on collaboration
- 35:28with, with our athletes here. You know, especially once they
- 35:30get like they, they, they, they get it, they figure it out.
- 35:34Typically, typically that happens around junior year, but
- 35:37sometimes earlier in quiz in case it happened earlier, you
- 35:39know, others has happened earlier as well.
- 35:41You know, we'll, we'll start to have conversations.
- 35:43I'm not telling you what to do. I'm talking about what we're
- 35:46going to do. I'm getting your input.
- 35:49So, so you know, the, the whole notion that, you know, high
- 35:51schools are leveled down. Well, it depends on who you are
- 35:54and how you, how you move. You know, I don't see myself as
- 35:58any better or I'm not a better coach.
- 36:01I'm not a lesser coach than, you know, Mike Holloway at, at, at
- 36:06Florida. And I'm not saying I'm, I'm not
- 36:08saying I'm not trying to put myself against him.
- 36:10I'm saying I'm not going to put myself down and say, well, I'm
- 36:12not as good as him and he's not a good.
- 36:15We're both coaches. We're just doing it in different
- 36:17places. You know, same thing as a pro
- 36:19coach and, and, or whatever. So I guess my point is it's
- 36:23really about, you know, where you choose to just spend your
- 36:26energy. You know, I love to spend my
- 36:28energy with young people, with teenagers.
- 36:31Have I gotten offers to, you know, coaching college?
- 36:34Yes, of course. And there are rumors about, you
- 36:36know, are you going to do this, going to do that?
- 36:38I just love this aid demographic.
- 36:41Now, interesting enough is, you know, we're we're looking at
- 36:44doing some things and there's some people who we have a
- 36:47relationship with that may come in and do some training with us,
- 36:51you know, in the coming year and they're they have pro
- 36:54aspiration, stuff like that, But I see no different like like I'm
- 36:57not like smarter now I don't have that Quincy around 44 five
- 37:02or maybe I'm Dumber. I don't know.
- 37:04But the bottom line is it's it's just people are noticing like,
- 37:07oh wow, this can happen at this level, this as well as can
- 37:11happen at the next level. Again, yes, Have I coached 44
- 37:16five athletes before? No, if I tell you what I have,
- 37:20I've coached athletes like Morgan Rothwell who went 60
- 37:23point as a 9th grader who's now running 53 as a a junior.
- 37:29So so it's about progression. Can you help develop talent OR
- 37:33you do you just manage. And if you manage talent, I
- 37:36don't care if you're a college coach, a high school coach or a
- 37:38pro. I think you're limiting your
- 37:40ability to make an impact and that athletes ability to get
- 37:44their job done. So it's our job as coaches
- 37:46holistically, wherever you are, give everything you have.
- 37:50And then if the high school coach, if your high school, like
- 37:52again, Audrey Wilson never left a high school coach.
- 37:54You know, others, you know, leave and go to college.
- 37:57It doesn't matter. But give everything where you
- 37:58are and appreciate, like, really like, appreciate where you are.
- 38:03Because, you know, I think one of the things that high school
- 38:08coaching does is it gives you a chance to continue to finish
- 38:11that developmental process that's happening in the lives of
- 38:15young people that all think it's overlooked.
- 38:17Be where your feet are. Yeah, that's what I heard you
- 38:20say right there. You know, appreciate what you're
- 38:22doing. And again, maybe society says if
- 38:26you're a college coach, you're air quotes a better person than
- 38:29a high school coach. I think it's malarkey because
- 38:31again, from 14 to 22 years old, that's what we're dealing with.
- 38:35High school and college primarily, you are positively
- 38:38affecting young people. And 99% of them now Joe's got
- 38:42one of the one percenters here, the 1% of the one percenters
- 38:44that will go on to college and probably go on pro.
- 38:48But but the vast majority of kids we're coaching aren't.
- 38:50But they are all going to go become moms and dads and
- 38:53business owners and teachers and coaches.
- 38:55And that is the impact that you guys and gals out there are
- 38:58making. So I appreciate that.
- 38:59That was a really good question that led to an awesome answer.
- 39:02I appreciate that, Joe. All right.
- 39:04I couldn't, I couldn't tell from this next individual's question
- 39:08if you know her or not. But she is a fellow George Mason
- 39:13alum, so I couldn't. But I couldn't tell if you all
- 39:14maybe were on the team. Sharon Allen.
- 39:16Does that name ring A? Bell at all OK.
- 39:19So Sharon said, well, I'm a fellow George Mason alum, so she
- 39:23knew a little bit about Joe here.
- 39:24She says Quincy is always race ready.
- 39:27What mental We're going to start working on the some of the
- 39:29mental side questions here. What mental work do you include
- 39:32in his daily preparation and how important is the mental prep
- 39:36when developing an athlete at this young age and slash level?
- 39:40So what mental work do you include in daily preparation and
- 39:42how important is that mental prep for a kid like this?
- 39:47Well, it wasn't when I was at Howard.
- 39:49We had our coach there. Sharon and I didn't share this
- 39:53because we shared coaches at George Mason, but our coach is
- 39:57to say all the time on track of 85% mental.
- 40:00And I was like, what are you talking about?
- 40:01Like this is physical, man, come on, we're getting after.
- 40:03We're just athletes and we, we got to have our bodies ready
- 40:06and, you know, all this other kind of stuff.
- 40:08But I, I believe that now it may be more, it may be 90%.
- 40:14You know, it's that kind of adage that, you know, if you
- 40:17believe you can and you believe you can't, you know, both of
- 40:19those are right. Which one?
- 40:21Which one are you? You know, and so one of the
- 40:26things that I have, one of the ways that I approach this sport
- 40:29is I heard this quote earlier, like he's just pulling quotes
- 40:32and stuff. Like I just love quotes like,
- 40:33because they're they're kind of get captured, you know, and
- 40:36little sound bites, you take them with you and climb a light.
- 40:40So I believe it's Kobe who said, you know, good players want to
- 40:44be coached. Great players want to be told
- 40:46the truth, right? So I tell, I tell them the
- 40:50truth. Quincy and I had training
- 40:52yesterday. I told him the truth about what
- 40:54I felt about the workout that we did four days ago, OK.
- 40:58And because I told him the truth, I said, OK, now you know
- 41:01what I want. And he went out there, he
- 41:03mailed, he chose it yesterday in practice, you know, hitting our
- 41:08numbers and, and even exceeding some in some cases.
- 41:11So, and that's what that I believe that that that sets the
- 41:15stage because if, if I can continue to prepare you, there's
- 41:19never pressure. We say that a lot.
- 41:21There's never pressure to be prepared.
- 41:24But how can I, how can I prepare you if I don't tell you what
- 41:28you're really up against? Because if I hold back and I
- 41:32say, well, you know, well, it's OK.
- 41:34And, and I know I tell my kids all the time.
- 41:36I was like, look, I got to tell you the truth now.
- 41:39So you, there's no culture shock when it gets there or, or when
- 41:42you, when you, when you arrive, I got to tell you like like
- 41:45they're, they're coming to knock your heads off.
- 41:47So what are you going to do about it?
- 41:49You say you're going to half drill, you're going to play
- 41:51around, you're going to be late, you're going to, you know, give
- 41:53give 3/4 effort. OK, I'm but I'm going to tell
- 41:56you can do that because we don't run a dictatorship here.
- 41:59But believe it or not, we joke around and have more fun than, I
- 42:03don't know a team that has more fun.
- 42:04I'm sure they're out there, but I only know my team still a lot
- 42:07of fun when it's time to get after we get after it.
- 42:09And I, I, I tell them the truth. So if, if, if your reps are off,
- 42:13I'm going to tell you that. So you got to now what you're
- 42:17going to do with it, you've got to deal with it.
- 42:19And then I'll work with you in it.
- 42:21But at the end of the day, it's up to the athlete to say, am I
- 42:24going to face this or am I going to run the out of the direction
- 42:29and pretend it doesn't exist? So I you know, when you talk
- 42:34about mental preparation and mindset, I believe that if you
- 42:38represent the realities of the situation and even sometimes
- 42:41like stare into it, like looking like don't like hide from it.
- 42:46Yeah, this is going to hurt the 400.
- 42:49You're going to hurt. Let's admit that.
- 42:52But let's hold on. The whole thing doesn't hurt.
- 42:56So it's not people look at the court like, oh, it's going to
- 42:58hurt. It's going to, yeah, it's going
- 42:59to. So I told them, like, this is
- 43:00going to hurt. This is going to suck.
- 43:02You're going to want to quit. But if you don't, what can
- 43:06happen now? Now, do you want to be the one
- 43:09who runs away from that or do you want to run into the
- 43:11opportunity knowing that it's going to hurt, but you'll get
- 43:13something that most people will never achieve?
- 43:15Which one you want? All right, well, that's the one
- 43:17you choose. Then let's go.
- 43:19So that's just that's constant with us.
- 43:22You know, sometimes I'm not always saying it in those voice
- 43:26tones. You know, sometimes you have to
- 43:27be elevated or something quiet. You know, that's part of
- 43:29coaching though, you know, and and and you know, that I think
- 43:33develops mindsets in our kids. And if you see our boys and
- 43:36girls again, our girls, we we ran 332, broke the national
- 43:40record by three records and it by three seconds.
- 43:42And it wasn't even our our fully loaded a squad.
- 43:45You know, we came in second to my third and played an amazing,
- 43:49but like, we asked somebody to come in, two people to come in.
- 43:52OK, they weren't starters, so to speak, all right?
- 43:55They weren't, they weren't blinking an eye because they
- 43:58weren't scared. Because we prepare in practice.
- 44:02All practice does, excuse me, all meets those is reveal what
- 44:05happened in practice. We know that.
- 44:07So mindset starts with conversations like that, with
- 44:10sharing the truth. And then what can we do about
- 44:13what we see? You know, I appreciate you're in
- 44:15a very unique situation, one that you don't have a lot of
- 44:19peers to go bounce ideas off of in regards to not, not just the,
- 44:23you know, I'm training at 44 second, but I'm in high school
- 44:26coaching. You know, this is a kind of a
- 44:27unique territory here and you know, we all have our
- 44:30insecurities in different parts of our lives.
- 44:32I appreciate that you you don't appear to be shrinking to
- 44:35imposter syndrome and you know, you got this * athlete and I
- 44:39could easily say, well, I don't want to lose them.
- 44:41You know, it could, could, could leave you any you know, whether
- 44:43it's pro or another high school, etcetera.
- 44:45And so there's, you know, a response could be, hey, what do
- 44:49you want to do today, Quincy? Let's make sure you stay happy.
- 44:52But I love how you still stay committed to, hey, to be the
- 44:55coach, I have to be truthful to you.
- 44:57And that means there's going to be times where the reps weren't
- 45:00good or what, And I have to be truthful to you so that you can
- 45:03lean into us. I really appreciate hearing
- 45:04that. The other thing is one of the
- 45:05most commented on scenes in the new Netflix series Sprint was
- 45:10Dennis when he was talking to Shakiri.
- 45:13And you know, he's like, hey, I got a question for you and I
- 45:15don't want you to answer it. I want you to show me on the
- 45:17track. And he's like, who's the
- 45:18fastest? And you know, someone on on
- 45:20social said, oh, they gave me goosebumps to see that behind
- 45:22it. Like we never, you know, unless
- 45:23you're Dennis or Shakiri, you don't ever see that.
- 45:27I just when you were talking about, hey, I'm a looking and I
- 45:30tell you, yeah, it's going to hurt in the 400 and if you don't
- 45:33quit, what can happen? It kind of gave me goosebumps
- 45:37and that, you know, it just makes me think like, hey,
- 45:38Netflix, you got a pretty unique situation here.
- 45:41Kids got two more years of high school.
- 45:43Maybe we need a a high school version of this as well.
- 45:46Just saying, just saying, just saying.
- 45:49All right, so this next question, I was a little
- 45:51concerned on this next question, but they they saved themselves,
- 45:55if you will. So Mike Kelly, he starts out by
- 45:59saying, hey, you can't spell culture without the word cult,
- 46:02which that is true for a lot of reasons.
- 46:04And so I was a little worried like, oh man, what's he getting
- 46:06into? But then he he starts climbing
- 46:08himself out. He says the bullish program is
- 46:09definitely and he all capitalized.
- 46:11Not definitely not a cult. Therefore, and I think this is a
- 46:14great question. My question is, how are you,
- 46:17Joe, able to balance such high expectations from and for the
- 46:22kids while still making sure that the kids feel like kids?
- 46:25We are dealing with 16/14/17 year old kids.
- 46:29How do you balance? Hey, we want to go out and win
- 46:32pen relays and set national records, but you're probably
- 46:35still watching Yu-gi-oh or whatever the kids are watching
- 46:38these days. And, you know, I have no idea
- 46:41what they're watching. And every time I try to figure
- 46:42it out, it's just something even more weird.
- 46:45You know the anime stuff. I don't get that stuff at all.
- 46:48God bless Noah that he's embodied this thing.
- 46:50A lot of other spread. I have no understanding of it at
- 46:53all. He you know, so, so The funny
- 46:56thing is we had a kid, Aiden Mcduffie, who won the national
- 46:59championship in the 200. So they invited him and Noah to
- 47:02hang out. And I've known Noah for a while,
- 47:04since he was a kid. And anime, they they had this
- 47:08nerdiest anime conversation in the history of life.
- 47:12I'm like, what? Y'all stop.
- 47:14This is just and they're like, yeah, and it's you know who this
- 47:16I can't even name the name. Anyway, I don't know what they
- 47:19do, what they're, what they're talking about, but hey, it works
- 47:23for them. It works and and it's all good.
- 47:27See, I'm getting into that. I didn't remember the question.
- 47:29So how do you, how do you balance such high expectations
- 47:33for you and the program from and for the kids while still making
- 47:36sure the kids feel like kids? So how are you, you know,
- 47:39setting these big goals but yet they're still kids?
- 47:42How do you balance that? So I'll go.
- 47:45In that in that Aiden example, and I appreciate you you re
- 47:48centered me. You know some of my my work
- 47:51here. So I'll do the squirrel thing.
- 47:56The so when we were walking to the national final walking
- 48:01towards the check in air for the national final and again, no one
- 48:04knew him. He wasn't on anybody's radar.
- 48:06It's probably one of the most proud accomplishments coaching
- 48:09life. I feel that this kid came out of
- 48:11nowhere and he beat the big names and won the national title
- 48:15and he'll go forever in history at our school and and and high
- 48:19school track, as you know, doing that from lane 9.
- 48:22So we're walking up to the stage and I'm like, OK, how can I
- 48:25continue to build, you know, a relationship with a kid who, you
- 48:28know, I actually love like a son.
- 48:30And I was like, all right, let me just start talking anime.
- 48:35So I was like, all right, what's your favorite anime character?
- 48:37He's like, really coach me. You really want to know that?
- 48:40Yeah. Come on.
- 48:40Tell me. He's like, well, they.
- 48:42I don't remember what they do. I was like, all right, great.
- 48:46All right, that's enough. OK.
- 48:47I want you to do because he's really getting into all that.
- 48:49We got to reach one. I was like, I want you to count
- 48:51on your inner whatever that person's name and get rid of
- 48:54that character's name. And I want you to just to go and
- 48:57just have that. And we had a great time.
- 48:59So, I mean, answered question. I try to take the pressure off
- 49:03of our kids and, and, and just help them realize that, you
- 49:06know, you're here this to have fun at the end of the day, let's
- 49:08have fun. I probably take more of that
- 49:11pressure on myself than anything because I'm, I'm very hard on
- 49:14myself, especially when an athlete want to achieve their
- 49:17goals. They're always theirs.
- 49:18They're not mine. So I, I take it, to be honest,
- 49:23I, I do take it way, way harder. I'm like, what could you have
- 49:26done? Definitely to help them more?
- 49:29But yeah, that's, that's one thing.
- 49:32The other thing is, believe it or not, like all the
- 49:34expectations and the things that people have, like we just, we
- 49:38really don't care. We say anything that happens
- 49:42inside of this circle matters. Everything that happens outside
- 49:47this circle is just opinion. And people are well within their
- 49:52right to have their opinion. Like you can have it, but you're
- 49:56outside the circle. Like inside the circle is what
- 49:59matters. In other words, like we can do
- 50:01something about it. All right, great.
- 50:03You didn't hit your number. You, you didn't run your PR
- 50:07today. You ran a second slower than
- 50:09you. Were in last week.
- 50:11I don't care what they say about it on social media because
- 50:14that's an opinion. What we do in this circle, the
- 50:19coaches, your training partners, your teammates, your, your,
- 50:23your, your, your parents. Like we can do something about
- 50:27it. And even in the parent piece, I
- 50:28got to be careful there. Like the parents at Bullets.
- 50:32One thing I love is they give the kids over to us and say,
- 50:35hey, we're up here in the stands, we're cheering, we'll
- 50:38have conversations. We need to be.
- 50:40But they give us the they entrust us with their kids so
- 50:44that we work those challenges out from our expertise and
- 50:50theirs where we don't have to worry about.
- 50:54OK, now I got to, you know, have another issue.
- 50:56No problem. Because, you know, dad says
- 50:58you'd be done this way, mom should be done this way and the
- 50:59kids said you'd be done this way.
- 51:00And the coach said that's what it adds more confusion and it
- 51:03hurts the kid at the end of the day.
- 51:05So our parents are are really supportive in that right of, of
- 51:08letting go and, and and letting us do our job.
- 51:11So when we do that, when we stay inside our circle, I'm very
- 51:15protective of that circle. Sometimes, I'll be honest, there
- 51:18are times where I'll say, get off social media.
- 51:20There were sometimes where even parents, I mean, there have been
- 51:22times where where I know Quincy's parents like get off
- 51:25social media just because, you know, there are a lot of kind
- 51:28people and, and nice people. But every now and then there's
- 51:30some nut that's just said some things that just are just
- 51:35ridiculously unkind and unfair. Like you don't want those
- 51:38opinions to start to try to seep into, into the into the circle.
- 51:46So we we keep it out of there and we keep it fun.
- 51:50And at the end of the day, it's on me.
- 51:51I put it on me. If it doesn't go right, it's on
- 51:54me. If it does go right, start you
- 51:56out. You did your job and I'm proud
- 51:58of you. I love the example of getting to
- 52:01know the kids on their levels, you know, talking about that
- 52:03anime stuff because you know, we do sound a little bit like 2 old
- 52:05men because we're like, oh, it's anime.
- 52:06I don't even know the name of it now, and I'm sure I pronounced
- 52:08Yu-gi-oh or whatever. I don't incorrectly.
- 52:10I don't know, but I do. Like that to me.
- 52:12Even though you don't know it or even care for it.
- 52:15OK, I know he does, so I'll just ask him about it.
- 52:18And that kid to your point where he's like, whoa, no, we like,
- 52:21you really want to know like, you know, only my friends, like
- 52:23no other adults or teachers asked me about this stuff.
- 52:25So I think you know what the kids are into or what the kids
- 52:28into. So you don't have to, it doesn't
- 52:30have to become your thing. I think you just have to ask
- 52:32questions. Oh, really?
- 52:33You like that? Why is that?
- 52:34Which one's your favorite? Why so?
- 52:37And that kid that you show you care for that it's not just, oh,
- 52:41what, what are you running for me today?
- 52:42I care about you, the person. So I thought that was a really
- 52:44good example. Mike Kelly actually, you know,
- 52:46he redeemed himself. So he actually got two questions
- 52:49in here. He says this past this past
- 52:51winter, I watched Bullis attempt a four by eight national record.
- 52:54And while I wish my 4 by 8, four by eight could run 750 indoors,
- 52:57it was obvious Bullis was disappointed.
- 53:00How do you temper expectations when things don't work out?
- 53:03And how do you use the bad days as a learning curve?
- 53:08Yeah, I don't believe you temper them.
- 53:11I believe you. You.
- 53:11You. You there's a model, one of my
- 53:14life models is expect the best, prepare for the worst and accept
- 53:18what comes right. So and accepted what comes like
- 53:22if we set a goal and we don't achieve it, like deal with it.
- 53:25Let's talk about let's unpack that.
- 53:27Like don't cover it up on the to the opposite of that cause
- 53:31unpacking. Let's talk about the whys and
- 53:33the what's in the hows. That's the only way you'll
- 53:35learn. Like I love the, the, the phrase
- 53:39you win and you learn, you never lose.
- 53:41So we're, we're, we're learning, but we're not going to, I'm not
- 53:44going to lean away from it because I'm afraid of what it's
- 53:46going to tell me. I'm, I'm going to lean into it
- 53:50because, because again, whatever it is that you're doing,
- 53:52whatever, whatever failure, quote UN quote, and I don't
- 53:55believe in the word failure or you can consider yourself
- 53:58failing forward, I guess is the way some people put it,
- 54:00whatever. There are lessons in there like
- 54:03lean into it and and and find them, you know, because if you
- 54:08don't, you're, you're, you're bound to repeat the same things
- 54:13for the same mistakes. So when we did that, yeah, we,
- 54:17we wanted to break the national record.
- 54:18Now, my distance college Procera was like, Carl straight.
- 54:22Can you not say that stuff to this to the press?
- 54:24I'm like, my bad. They asked me.
- 54:28Yeah, I believe we can break the national record, you know, and
- 54:31I'm going to say it on record again.
- 54:32She's going to get mad at me. I believe we can break it again
- 54:34next year. And and since he played it
- 54:37because again, he didn't he didn't run his best way to talk
- 54:40about it on that particular day, but then he went outdoors and
- 54:43ran 150 conservatively. I will tell you he can run a lot
- 54:47faster in my opinion, I guess than 150.
- 54:53So like, yeah, we can break the four eight, I believe not.
- 54:55Are we going to I'm not calling it like, you know, Babe Ruth
- 54:59pointed to the stands, but I'm saying I think we can.
- 55:04And if that's something that we're going to go after, if
- 55:05we're going to like, if we're going to say we're going to do
- 55:08it. What I try to get our athletes
- 55:09to understand is this like, don't be afraid of the numbers
- 55:12#1 OK. And don't be afraid to say what
- 55:15you really want, if you really want it.
- 55:19And you and, and, and, and, and you really give your everything
- 55:22into it. Like, like again, we ran 332.
- 55:26The boys ran three O 9. Like we didn't.
- 55:29Well, the boys came in first, the girls came in second.
- 55:31We didn't lose. Don't be afraid of that.
- 55:34So just lean into it, learn the lessons and forget the details,
- 55:39that kind of thing. So yeah, our culture is a little
- 55:43different in that we're not afraid to go after it.
- 55:46We're not afraid to miss the mark, but we're also not afraid
- 55:50to look at what we missed in the process, go figure it out and
- 55:55get it better the next go round. I love that, I love that, Ben
- 55:59Nicholas Podcast alum asked. Do you ever feel pressure
- 56:04knowing that you have this once in a lifetime athlete who is
- 56:06still a child in your care? And if so, how do you handle
- 56:09that pressure? I don't feel pressure from
- 56:14anybody coaching him. I really don't.
- 56:18I feel responsibility, right? So, and my responsibility is is
- 56:23first to him. Like if he's going to give his
- 56:27everything, you don't you believe I'm going to give my
- 56:29everything to I'm never going to under give to what an athlete
- 56:38will first give to me. Like I'm not going to allow
- 56:41somebody to give 10 and I'm giving nine.
- 56:44I'm just not going to do it now. That mean if you give me 4, I'm
- 56:47not going to give you 5. I'm still going to give you 10.
- 56:50But but Grinsey gives me 10. So guess what?
- 56:56I feel a burden of responsibility to give him 10
- 56:59back. You know, it comes to a lot of
- 57:02work because he makes me work. I said it in another interview
- 57:08like he makes me work. I don't mean it like in a bad
- 57:09way, but I mean like he challenges me just because he's
- 57:14so hungry. Like I'm sitting, I'm a numbers
- 57:17guy and he's a numbers kid. So we're almost like this kind
- 57:21of like this perfect match because he's very driven.
- 57:26I'm very driven. He's very analytical.
- 57:29I'm very analytical. He does not like to lose.
- 57:32I did not like to lose. But we also understand that it's
- 57:36not, we're not winning all calls.
- 57:40So, you know, we, we, how we, we, we vibe together.
- 57:44It's obviously I got years on them, so I'm ahead.
- 57:47So I have to lead him and I have to also lead him in places that
- 57:52will avoid the mistakes that I've made when I was his age and
- 57:56you know, 10 years, 20 years down the road or whatever.
- 57:59So I feel responsible. I don't feel pressured at all.
- 58:03I feel responsible to give him my everything.
- 58:06Now it just so happens that the entire world's watching.
- 58:12You got to know me. You know me.
- 58:14Don't care like, but again, like I was visibly emotional after
- 58:21the, the final, not because I feel like we failed because we
- 58:29didn't, but I was like, where could I have gotten it right for
- 58:33him more for him, not for NBC or the cameras or for the, you
- 58:40know, the prognosticators like for him.
- 58:45And that, that eats at me. And, and we talked about it.
- 58:47We trust me. We have reviewed that race a
- 58:49lot. And, and when 44 dying is your
- 58:52worst, you're having a pretty good run.
- 58:55And, and we're going to fix some things because the beauty of
- 58:57this is this, it's like we were there a year ago at U20.
- 59:01Then he made a, a, a, a tactical error And, and we, we, we didn't
- 59:06run our best. So this year we made another
- 59:09tactical error and we didn't run our best.
- 59:12They'll go anyway till next year.
- 59:16Yeah, well, we may, we may, we probably will because again, no
- 59:19one's expecting perfection. But I'm saying like he, he went
- 59:23from tactical error running 46 four last year to tactical error
- 59:27running 44 nine. Right.
- 59:28Got. It.
- 59:29So let us make a tactical error next year.
- 59:31And again, I'm not predicting numbers, but I'm just telling
- 59:33him we're, you know, and again, we're not doing through this
- 59:36season yet, but we're talking about the development and the
- 59:40progression. And again, I, I feel
- 59:42responsibility to him and all of my athletes to give my very best
- 59:47because if I don't, I feel like I'm cheating them and, and they
- 59:50don't deserve that because they're, they're too great a
- 59:53people for that. I love it all right, we're going
- 59:56to get into some something that we don't ever get into here in
- 59:59the podcast out of all you know, 3-4 hundred podcasts.
- 1:00:03What you guys don't see before we hit record is one of the
- 1:00:06things I. Talk with and get agreeance with
- 1:00:09each one of our guest is like, hey, we're not going to talk
- 1:00:11about XS and OS. I haven't coached in nearly 20
- 1:00:14years. That's how old I am.
- 1:00:15So it'd be a little inauthentic for me.
- 1:00:17Plus that's just not our style. There's other great, amazing
- 1:00:19podcast and clinics and stuff to, to, to go over that kind of
- 1:00:23stuff. But we had a lot of questions
- 1:00:26about training and so we're going to ask them.
- 1:00:28And so you get to talk however much and deep and not deep that
- 1:00:31you want to talk about, you know what what secrets you have and
- 1:00:35don't have and what's, you know, trade secret.
- 1:00:38That's all on you. You'll get to share with us
- 1:00:39here. So our first question comes from
- 1:00:42mutual friend and Gilpod Castle. I'm here Coach Quinn, Coach
- 1:00:44Pack. I'm surprised he didn't ask a
- 1:00:47fly fishing questions. That was I was real proud of him
- 1:00:49for that. But he asked how do you develop
- 1:00:52depth and range in a small to mid sized program?
- 1:00:55So we're kind of taking it away from Quincy here a little bit
- 1:00:57and just talking about the program in general, How do you
- 1:00:59develop such depth and range in that program you got there?
- 1:01:05I would probably go back to the word we used earlier and that's
- 1:01:08culture. And, and within the culture,
- 1:01:10it's mindset like we, we, we, we try to develop.
- 1:01:14And it's interesting because we have these super smart kids.
- 1:01:16Like our kids are brainiacs. Like don't get it twisted like
- 1:01:19these are smart kids and, and people if, if, if anyone thinks
- 1:01:22that, oh, they just let anybody in the bullet suits fast.
- 1:01:25Like, oh, no, you don't understand bullet.
- 1:01:26Trust me. If I got every kid in the bullet
- 1:01:30that I wanted to get in, we're we're having a very different
- 1:01:32conversation. Trust me.
- 1:01:34And I mean that in in all, all good ways.
- 1:01:38So when we have super kind and super smart kids, sometimes the,
- 1:01:46the, the kindness bleeds over and, and it doesn't lend itself
- 1:01:50to tenacity. So the, the culture and the
- 1:01:53mindset is like, we're going to give our everything.
- 1:01:56And, and that's the that's, that's the expectation or the
- 1:02:01standard that we're going to work from.
- 1:02:05And it's OK to be scared. Like they don't like, let's
- 1:02:09admit it, OK, We're scared. I'm afraid that this workout is
- 1:02:13going to hurt. I'm afraid that this workout is
- 1:02:16going to expose my weakness. It's like that's OK.
- 1:02:21But we're going to do it and we're going to do it together.
- 1:02:24We're all there. Now who's with me and the
- 1:02:27freshman who's shaking like, Oh my gosh, we have this, We have
- 1:02:31this 500 meter hill loop that that we run in a forward state.
- 1:02:36We're in the bus at national. I was like, hey, guys, great
- 1:02:39news. What I was like, hey, it's not
- 1:02:41more weeks to the loop. They're like you coach man, you
- 1:02:43just ruined our eye off of a fun trip.
- 1:02:49So but that freshman who's shaking in their boots like I've
- 1:02:51never done this before. They can look to a junior who's
- 1:02:54been there and say, don't worry, we got you.
- 1:02:56Come on and, and, and literally the culture is the, the again,
- 1:03:01your team, your kids determine culture that the leader just
- 1:03:05monitors it, right? That's what the leader does.
- 1:03:08The leader, the leader will, will is, is almost I think Jack
- 1:03:11Welch said this. He's like, you're the chief
- 1:03:13culture officer, you're the CCO, right?
- 1:03:17So it's my job is to monitor and to make sure the culture is
- 1:03:19intact, but the one to carry out that's your team, whether it be
- 1:03:24your track team or whether it be your marketing team, you know,
- 1:03:28your division, whatever it is, it, it, it, it plays itself out
- 1:03:31in life just as well. That's why I love sport and
- 1:03:34sport is a microcosm of life. So, so workout wise and those
- 1:03:39kind of things like that's what starts it when I, when you're
- 1:03:41talking about, Hey, how do they have A and AB and AC and AD
- 1:03:44team? They just have, you know, 25
- 1:03:47kids. Well, it's culture, it's
- 1:03:48mindset. And when you get enough people
- 1:03:50to buy in, when there's an outlier, it shows itself.
- 1:03:55But it doesn't work very well. And then I'm kind of stubborn,
- 1:03:58too. I'm like, yeah.
- 1:04:00And then I come in and then they always say the older ones say
- 1:04:04Coach Lee, though if that would have been me fresh in here, I'm.
- 1:04:07Like, of course, right, right, right.
- 1:04:09We all have our own memories, right?
- 1:04:12But the cool thing is they they're they're really speaking
- 1:04:14to the culture. They're like, no, that's not OK.
- 1:04:16That's right, you know, And then eventually the freshman gets it
- 1:04:19in and I have one freshman in particular I'm thinking about.
- 1:04:23I won't say their name, but they got it.
- 1:04:24They got it late, but they got it.
- 1:04:26And I can't wait till next year till I see this young person
- 1:04:29because the culture and the mindset, it really, it really
- 1:04:31shapes, you know, the team that's.
- 1:04:34Awesome. Warren, I believe it's
- 1:04:36pronounced Your EURE ask was making an attempt for the US
- 1:04:41trials indoor and U20 planned going into the season and what
- 1:04:46went into your decision? So and then a separate question,
- 1:04:48what went into your decision to run them in the 800 this year?
- 1:04:50So start with was it always in the cards this season?
- 1:04:53Like, hey, we're we're gunning for the trials.
- 1:04:57No, it wasn't. And, and, and here's why,
- 1:05:00because again, we care about the individual and I, I hope if
- 1:05:03anybody would look at our program, you'll see that, that
- 1:05:08we care about these kids individually.
- 1:05:11And it, it matters not what your accolades are, because again,
- 1:05:14they're, at the end of the day, they're just numbers. 4459 is a
- 1:05:18number. You know, 150 is a 149 for
- 1:05:23calling is a #5361 for Morgan is a number, you know, 2322 for
- 1:05:30citizens. They're getting numbers.
- 1:05:31They don't define your person. So I'm not going to chase
- 1:05:37numbers for, to, to, to justify or verify your worth.
- 1:05:42That's, that's whack to me. Your worth is way bigger than,
- 1:05:45than, than a number associated with a clock.
- 1:05:48So with, with Quincy in particular, you know, we, we, I
- 1:05:53meet with a lot of the families and parents individually about
- 1:05:56their goals and what they, you know, want to do, want to
- 1:05:58accomplish. And in talking to his family
- 1:06:01and, and him, we, we, I knew he could run that fast.
- 1:06:06And but here's the genius of his parents, they didn't care as
- 1:06:12much about can he qualify? They cared about is he prepared
- 1:06:18in other areas outside of athletics to go to that level
- 1:06:23that he's qualified for. And if he's not ready, we're
- 1:06:26not, we're not going. And I'm like, great, we're on
- 1:06:28the same page because I'm not going either, you know?
- 1:06:32So what do you mean you ready? I mean, well, first of all,
- 1:06:34ready academically, it's it's it's just going to be a
- 1:06:37detriment to his grade. And so we ain't doing it, you
- 1:06:40know, mentally, how's he handling, you know, all this
- 1:06:43success and all this pressure and all this other concept that
- 1:06:46the outside world will try to put on you.
- 1:06:49No maturity wise, is he maturing?
- 1:06:51He was 14 when he got here. Then most of his Stephen here,
- 1:06:54he's 15. He's a 15 year old young boy
- 1:06:56kid. He hates him under that young
- 1:06:59man, you know, but there's a maturation like let him grow,
- 1:07:03let people grow up. Like we put all this pressure on
- 1:07:07these on these so-called childhood phenoms and stuff.
- 1:07:10And and then like then we're all ready to point fingers at them
- 1:07:14When, when, when the pressure that we put on them a lot of
- 1:07:17times is what causes them to not achieve success because they're
- 1:07:22trying to live up to your expectations.
- 1:07:24Well, that's not how we do it here.
- 1:07:25And it never will be. So whether they, it was a
- 1:07:30thought that could happen, but it wasn't something that we put
- 1:07:32on the radar because we didn't know.
- 1:07:34We didn't know that he would be ready for it.
- 1:07:36And we come to find that he was ready and we proved it time and
- 1:07:39time again. I'm talking about outside of
- 1:07:41athletics. And then when you hit the number
- 1:07:46and and we all agreed that he was ready, we're like, all
- 1:07:48right, well, let's go. That didn't happen until well
- 1:07:52into the season. We'll we'll touch back on that
- 1:07:55again, Warren. Second question was and I and I
- 1:07:58found this fascinating as well because you know, we hear a lot
- 1:08:01of times that you know how hard it is to get 100 meter kid to
- 1:08:04run in the four by four and and a 400 meter kid, it's impossible
- 1:08:08to get him to run an 800 and all that.
- 1:08:09So Warren, Warren, second question was what went into your
- 1:08:12decision to run him in the 800 this year?
- 1:08:15Well, it was our decision actually.
- 1:08:17So one of the things we like to do and it's we'd like to have
- 1:08:20fun. It's still sport, right?
- 1:08:22So like I, I try to get kids, like don't just get caught up
- 1:08:26and say this is what I am, This is all I am.
- 1:08:28I'm just a hurdler. I'm just a short runner.
- 1:08:31I'm just a mid distance runner right why have fun go up and try
- 1:08:35some stuff We we we have kids, believe it or not I mean doing a
- 1:08:38high jump I mean long jump trip this having fun, but it's so
- 1:08:43dangerous. You know what I get hurt water
- 1:08:45across the street by step off the curb.
- 1:08:47So please stop it right. It's still sport, they're still
- 1:08:50kids, and oh, by the way, they bounce back pretty quickly.
- 1:08:54Now me on the other hand, I. Was going to say I was just
- 1:08:56about to say me and you. Get the stretcher right.
- 1:09:02But well, we have fun, you know, so let's have a fun, let's have
- 1:09:04fun. So one of the things that we
- 1:09:05have fun doing is we talk about the different things that we can
- 1:09:09do and you can do. So he's got range and he ran a
- 1:09:1255 meter dash. He haven't run one since then,
- 1:09:15but his freshman year we just ran it and he ran he ran pretty
- 1:09:17decent. He ran good and and his
- 1:09:19mechanics were nowhere where they are today.
- 1:09:22So we run the 300, we run the 400, we run the 500, we run the
- 1:09:26600. So we like that.
- 1:09:27All right, He likes it specifically like OK, I mean,
- 1:09:30what do you think about the 600 day coach?
- 1:09:32What do you think about the three?
- 1:09:33It's fun, right? I think I'm ready to run A2.
- 1:09:36OK, let's try it out there. You don't have as many options.
- 1:09:41So it's like, you know, OK. And so we were, we were at this
- 1:09:45meet and he's like, I think when I went 8 and I wanted him to say
- 1:09:49that, but I didn't, I didn't put it there before.
- 1:09:51I was hoping because he didn't, he knew he didn't run him on the
- 1:09:53quarter because we just ran the quarter at Florida Relays where
- 1:09:56he ran the 43, excuse me, 43. Oh, look at that.
- 1:09:59Hey, maybe he's figuring that thing out there. 4519 So, but we
- 1:10:06didn't want to do it back-to-back.
- 1:10:08So then there was a 200. It was a little cool, little
- 1:10:10cold that day. The temperature was dropping
- 1:10:14108. OK.
- 1:10:16You sure you want to run a? Yeah, I want to run a.
- 1:10:18Now, the cool part is his teammate was in it.
- 1:10:20And I like that because he's still a competitor.
- 1:10:23And his teammate is one of his closest friends on the on the
- 1:10:25team to Colin Abrams was a great kid who just ran 149 indoors.
- 1:10:31And he he that's what I love about is just athletes who just
- 1:10:36don't shy away from it. It's a big meet, big stage, big
- 1:10:40competitor. All right, big opportunity.
- 1:10:43That's cool. So so that's kind of how that
- 1:10:46happened and it was cool and he ran it one.
- 1:10:48Now we've had conversations about that race too, and whether
- 1:10:51we do it again or not will remain to be seen.
- 1:10:53But just the fact that he tried it competition, it's pretty fun.
- 1:10:58So try stuff out there. If you're listening, coaches
- 1:11:00lecture, athletes just try things and you know, again, you
- 1:11:03win and you learn. You never lose.
- 1:11:04So what are the odds that we see him run a mile at some point?
- 1:11:09Probably. Well, I'll put it this way.
- 1:11:12He would say no way. He'd be out there flipping out
- 1:11:16right now if he would want to do it.
- 1:11:21Yeah, Odds are very unlikely that it would happen.
- 1:11:26But again, who knows? I don't know.
- 1:11:27I mean. Crushed every mid distance
- 1:11:30distance coach I like. Everybody wants to move
- 1:11:32everybody up. It's like we'll soon be talking
- 1:11:35about what's Quincy's potential in the marathon here if we
- 1:11:37don't. No, I think the plan right
- 1:11:39exactly. No, I think the miles a bit
- 1:11:42much, but the 800 for. Sure, Let's keep moving here,
- 1:11:45Ryan from Twitter says. Did training change when the
- 1:11:48Olympic trials became a possibility?
- 1:11:50So he talks about how that wasn't the beginning goal of the
- 1:11:53season. But as we moved along and we
- 1:11:55talked about other things, was he ready?
- 1:11:57Not just physically as far as qualifying, but mentally and
- 1:12:00academically, etcetera. There had to be a time where
- 1:12:03it's like, OK, you know, we're qualified, we got to make a
- 1:12:06decision. It takes at least three months
- 1:12:08in advance to get hotels in Eugene, first of all.
- 1:12:10So we knew we had to be in advance in there.
- 1:12:13So when it did become like, OK, we're going to go to the trials,
- 1:12:16Did training change? Well, training really for us
- 1:12:20changed not because of the trials, it changed because he
- 1:12:25got sick. So what happened?
- 1:12:28So we went to Florida Relays when he he he did really well
- 1:12:32there and qualified there. And then the next thing on the
- 1:12:35the agenda was pen relays. We will there.
- 1:12:38Then after that we did another meet and he ran about in the
- 1:12:43rain. He ran about 45 one again where
- 1:12:46it was on a wet track, so we knew we were on on pace.
- 1:12:49That was the first week of May, that Saturday and then the very
- 1:12:54next day, that Sunday, he got sick.
- 1:12:56And when I say sick, I mean really sick, like he's vomiting.
- 1:13:00He can't keep anything down where he we had to take him to
- 1:13:03the emergency room. Yeah.
- 1:13:06So, yeah, he was admitted into the hospital.
- 1:13:09They didn't know what was wrong with him.
- 1:13:10He just had this violent vomiting.
- 1:13:11He couldn't, he couldn't even keep down water.
- 1:13:14And you know, he had to get Ivs and, and it was pretty bad and,
- 1:13:17and he lost a full week of not just training, he lost about 5
- 1:13:22to 7 lbs. And he's not the biggest guy in
- 1:13:24the world. So it's a lot for.
- 1:13:26Him right, Yeah, yeah, right. So I could say for for me, I, I,
- 1:13:28I, I'll be glad to lose side to side.
- 1:13:31You want anymore? I want to take 10 as well.
- 1:13:34But yeah, he he, he lost, you know, five, 7 lbs.
- 1:13:37He couldn't go to school like he literally was he, he was out of
- 1:13:40it. And I didn't know if we would
- 1:13:42have the rest of our season. So, so we really literally he
- 1:13:48had to dig out of the mud to even get back.
- 1:13:52And people don't realize that. And that's another reason why,
- 1:13:54you know, getting the emotion on my face and what's happening at
- 1:13:57the trials at the end, because they don't have no idea of what
- 1:14:00this kid thought through just to get there.
- 1:14:04And I'm telling you, the resilience of a 16 year old,
- 1:14:07forget age and side height and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:14:11That dude has the heart of a wine, the heart of a champion
- 1:14:14because the kids couldn't even eat.
- 1:14:17So forget the fact that you, your body's moving on the
- 1:14:20nutrients and, and, and you know, the hydration and, and you
- 1:14:24can't rest because you're, you're constantly up and you're
- 1:14:27throwing up and you, if you drink something, you throw that
- 1:14:30up. And if you don't drink
- 1:14:31something, you diet. Like that was, it was a really
- 1:14:33pretty big ordeal. So we had to change training
- 1:14:36simply because we just said, all right, well, let's just see
- 1:14:39where we are and, and, and let's start this one one step at a
- 1:14:42time. And it was tough.
- 1:14:44It was tough road. And I can see the disappointing
- 1:14:46on his face when his times were slower and significantly slower
- 1:14:51than than when he left. And I just again, my job was to
- 1:14:54keep encouraging him and, and let him know like, we're going
- 1:14:57to be there, It's going to be all right, we're going to be
- 1:14:58there. Let's just focus on the now.
- 1:15:00Focus on the now. I believe in your focus on the
- 1:15:02now. You know, the the next will take
- 1:15:04care of itself. You know, don't focus on the
- 1:15:06next. Let's focus on the now.
- 1:15:08Let's focus on the Rep. We do now, not what's going on
- 1:15:11down the road. And, and eventually just battled
- 1:15:13back. We had a meet.
- 1:15:15We just kind of used to kind of see where we were.
- 1:15:18We didn't run the quarter. I didn't want to run the quarter
- 1:15:20because it would have not been to his liking or to anybody.
- 1:15:25And then now you have all the people, you know, saying
- 1:15:28whatever they're saying and they don't know what they're talking
- 1:15:31about because we didn't even leak this.
- 1:15:32We didn't tell anybody because we didn't want people to feel
- 1:15:35like they're making excuses. So he ran 100 and a 200, you
- 1:15:39know, really with a week and a half to two weeks of training.
- 1:15:43And it was tough because he didn't win 100 and he, he barely
- 1:15:49won the 200. But we were working on a bigger
- 1:15:51plan. So we wound up running the, the
- 1:15:56400 at New Balance for the first time.
- 1:15:59And that's when we knew, OK, we might be out of the woods now,
- 1:16:03let's go get them. And then we, we, we, we
- 1:16:06unleashed it at the trials. And but he had to dig out of a
- 1:16:09lot because six weeks prior he's in a hospital with, with Ivs in
- 1:16:14him trying to figure out, you know, what's going on with his
- 1:16:17body. Amazing tough time.
- 1:16:20We tough. Time our next question we've
- 1:16:21actually already touched on it so I just I'm just going to read
- 1:16:24it because I want to honor the person who asked it because they
- 1:16:27they participated. So David Dushkin, a good friend
- 1:16:29of ours in your area. It's just curious as to how Joe
- 1:16:32plans the Quincy schedule and how that will change post
- 1:16:35Olympics over the next two years of high school.
- 1:16:37We actually touched on that way earlier about the different
- 1:16:41opportunities that he'll have in regards to pro meets, regular
- 1:16:44meet, you know, high school meets, etcetera.
- 1:16:45So we'll we'll go past that. We definitely answer that these
- 1:16:48next two questions. Next two individuals have very
- 1:16:51similar questions, so I'm going to group them together.
- 1:16:53I'm going to read them and then let you expound on them.
- 1:16:55So GE Blazer track and field cross country family says is
- 1:17:00Coach Lee a Feed the Cats guy or more of a Clyde Hart volume
- 1:17:04slash lactic guy? And then Peter Rock RAAK
- 1:17:08followed right along with it and says, how do you culture the
- 1:17:11mindset of a four enemy runner and get a sprinter willing to
- 1:17:13push beyond their limits? What are your thoughts on Feed
- 1:17:15the Cats versus Baylor? That's a big topic that is
- 1:17:18happening so much it's crazy. We have decided to clash these
- 1:17:22two styles, if you will, Feed the Cats and Coach Hart.
- 1:17:27Where do you sit on this? Where where do you weigh in on
- 1:17:31your training in regards to those two types of training?
- 1:17:35Well, let me answer that, but before I do, I do want to jump
- 1:17:37back on that previous question. I'll answer very succinctly.
- 1:17:42You know, we don't. So for him not changing anything
- 1:17:45like we're not talking about changing anything for him.
- 1:17:48And once we get done with this Olympic trials piece here,
- 1:17:52assuming the Olympic Games, you know, we'll get from the rest
- 1:17:55and we'll get back into our regular annual plant.
- 1:17:58So we just, we just got to modify.
- 1:18:00We shifted down the road a little bit, but you know, we're
- 1:18:04not again, we don't want to, we're not blowing everything up
- 1:18:08and saying, Oh, now we have this, you know, 44, five, We got
- 1:18:10to do everything different, like the like, you know, if the name
- 1:18:14broke, don't fix it. So in terms of, you know, our
- 1:18:18philosophy and I, I say our because we're a collaborative
- 1:18:20coaching team. It's not the Jovi show.
- 1:18:25And I'm the, you know, the genius in the room.
- 1:18:26I actually do not believe I'm the smartest person in the room.
- 1:18:30Somebody once said to be the smartest person in the room,
- 1:18:32find a different room. So in the wrong room, I'm
- 1:18:37certainly not the smartest. So I collaborate with our
- 1:18:39coaching staff. You know, again, we have 12
- 1:18:42highly intelligent people who are on our staff and who have
- 1:18:47specialties in different events and different skill sets.
- 1:18:51So we collaborate together to put the plan together.
- 1:18:54And you know, Coach Dave's a part of that.
- 1:18:56And Coach Derek, coach Rotini, he's our he's our our strength
- 1:19:01of conditioning resident genius. I joke on him a lot because he
- 1:19:06he was a decathlete at Upenn. So I'm like you, you, you
- 1:19:08clearly are the smartest person in here, but you don't act like
- 1:19:11it. But then we go like the pen
- 1:19:13relays. He's like, oh, wait, I can't
- 1:19:15remember which I turned up to turn like, like, how do you
- 1:19:17graduate from Upenn, be in Philadelphia?
- 1:19:19And I know they were going like, give me your degree.
- 1:19:24But now we have a lot of fun too.
- 1:19:25But so we put the plan together. We're not like all or nothing,
- 1:19:30like I'm always going to follow this, always going to follow
- 1:19:32that. You know, we, we take pieces
- 1:19:33from here and there and we just see what works.
- 1:19:36So I think people who try to do that, they try to emulate
- 1:19:39exactly what someone else does. You're not just discrediting
- 1:19:43your the author of whatever it is, but you're really
- 1:19:48discrediting yourself. Like you've got a lot in you as
- 1:19:52a coach that from experience, from this observation from,
- 1:19:56from, you know, things that you have, have have seen in red,
- 1:20:01like don't throw all that out. Like try some of it.
- 1:20:04Do we have a staple that we, we, we come from Absolutely.
- 1:20:08We're very big on understanding speed and and and speed.
- 1:20:13Development and how that translates across the gambit
- 1:20:19from 100 all the way up to the mile.
- 1:20:21Now we under speed and speed development are a big part of
- 1:20:23what we do and the technical components that are there and
- 1:20:27but we're not just speed only, you know, we're not just the one
- 1:20:32way to do it. There's certain things that
- 1:20:33we'll place in there that will make it a successful experience
- 1:20:39for a, a, a, a certain kind of runner because every quarter
- 1:20:44mile is not built the same, you know, every 200 run is not built
- 1:20:47the same, you know, every, every we, we like, we, we
- 1:20:50individualize our, our plans and programs.
- 1:20:52And so am IA feed the cats versus flying hard.
- 1:20:56And you know, I don't really know much about the whole feed
- 1:20:59the cats thing. I've heard the terms, but, but
- 1:21:03you know, I don't know too much about it.
- 1:21:05I, we may have some of them in our plan.
- 1:21:07I don't know because I don't know it, but I do know that, you
- 1:21:09know, we don't have like we're not cookie cutter,
- 1:21:12one-size-fits-all. We try to make sure we
- 1:21:15specialize it so that the individual athlete can get to
- 1:21:18the maximum of their potential. And if we don't get it right, we
- 1:21:22try to get better, if that makes sense.
- 1:21:25Yep, that's good. Again, two questions.
- 1:21:27I'm going to kind of group together here.
- 1:21:29Coach Hugh says, what does a typical week of workouts look
- 1:21:32like? Not looking for exact details of
- 1:21:34each workout, but just a weekly format overview, IE your daily
- 1:21:38themes. And then Ken Stone asked very
- 1:21:41succinctly. Ken gets just gets to the point.
- 1:21:43What's what's the hardest workout?
- 1:21:44So what's a typical work week of workouts look like?
- 1:21:48And what's just the, you know, do you have a tradition?
- 1:21:50You talked about that 500 meter hill loop.
- 1:21:52Is there a traditional like, oh man, today's hell day?
- 1:21:55This workout is whatever what you know what, what's the
- 1:21:57hardest what and what's the typical work look like?
- 1:22:00Well, first of all, I just say with the media genius and guru
- 1:22:05where I just want to shout out the excellent job that you're
- 1:22:07doing for combining questions. That just means I'm being too
- 1:22:11long winded and we're running out of time.
- 1:22:14It's your schedule I'm working on buddy.
- 1:22:16No, I'm fine. I'm good.
- 1:22:18I'm good on time, you know you are.
- 1:22:22Very media savvy. Now when I got you back, you
- 1:22:25know, several months ago as one of the first ones.
- 1:22:28Now you have just a slew you, you wonder how big Joe's gotten.
- 1:22:32I'm going to point this out. I had to work through Joe's
- 1:22:36director of OPS to get this done.
- 1:22:37Now I no, I'm, I'm kidding Joe. Well, I did remind her name
- 1:22:42again. Candace What?
- 1:22:44What was her name again? Connie.
- 1:22:47Connie, Connie, because I know you're listening.
- 1:22:49Thank you. Your communication was
- 1:22:51brilliant. I just really want to publicly
- 1:22:53shout out Connie and her and her education communication with
- 1:22:56this. But I do have to say Joe and I
- 1:22:59text each other all the time. So he's not he is not big time.
- 1:23:03You know, I'm the easiest guy to big time because who am I to
- 1:23:05quince? You know, he's not a pole
- 1:23:07vaulter or you know, and then I can do for Quincy.
- 1:23:10No, I do respect Joe, you and I have you're awesome.
- 1:23:14You're so no, I kid about all that stuff.
- 1:23:16So. No, I know you're my questions.
- 1:23:18Now you're trying to dodge the question.
- 1:23:19That's what it is. So my media savvy, right, or
- 1:23:25I'll forget the question. You know, I think so a staple
- 1:23:30for what we do in is number one, like I said, speed and speed
- 1:23:34development. Like we want to teach kids how
- 1:23:36to Sprint. You know, we believe, I agree
- 1:23:40with the the notion that everything starts from the 100m
- 1:23:43race pad. So, and it's a pattern because
- 1:23:48you know, it, it, it has a rhythmic approach and a standard
- 1:23:52that will deviate if you don't approach it correctly.
- 1:23:56So I think of like, you know, their their patterns or rhythmic
- 1:24:01patterns to music, you know their rhythmic patterns to, you
- 1:24:04know, a ton of different things that you would do
- 1:24:07professionally. So what is 100 million pattern?
- 1:24:10What does it mean? What is it?
- 1:24:11What is it sound like? What does it look like?
- 1:24:14How does it feel? You know, I told my kids all the
- 1:24:17time, there's three things are happening when you're, when
- 1:24:20you're accelerating, when you're sprinting.
- 1:24:23You can, it's, I can, I can see what's happening.
- 1:24:28I can hear what's happening, but you can feel what's happening,
- 1:24:31right? I cannot feel, but I can see and
- 1:24:34hear. You cannot see what's happening,
- 1:24:37but you can hear and feel. When we blend those together and
- 1:24:41we work on the same sheet of music, then we're going to, you
- 1:24:45know, create the, you know, hit song or whatever the case may
- 1:24:49be. You get what I'm saying?
- 1:24:53So we're sprinting no less than twice a week, no less.
- 1:24:58We're never sprinting less than twice a week, ever.
- 1:25:01I'm talking about quarter. Miles on that.
- 1:25:04Ever. Sometimes three times a week.
- 1:25:07Now what? What kind of sprinting is it?
- 1:25:08Is it acceleration? Is it?
- 1:25:11You know Max B is it, you know. Somewhere in between that
- 1:25:15depends on where we are in the season, but we're sprinting day
- 1:25:18one, like out the gate, like we're not like because, because
- 1:25:21if I don't teach you how to push, if I don't teach you how
- 1:25:24to to project your hips through space properly, then you're
- 1:25:30going to always be at a deficit. I don't care how talented you
- 1:25:32are, you're always going to be so so we we do that twice a
- 1:25:36week. And we, we.
- 1:25:38You know, again, there's not like we're not doing anything
- 1:25:40like super special. You know, you may say you're
- 1:25:42right, Joe, you just have camera 45 and OK, I, I, I get that, But
- 1:25:49it's really on, on how you apply.
- 1:25:51You know what I say wisdom is applied knowledge.
- 1:25:53Like how do you apply the knowledge like?
- 1:25:55And then are you getting, are you able to communicate in such
- 1:25:59a way where, where it's at the level where the kid can
- 1:26:03understand it, but you're not ordering it down so much to
- 1:26:07where it's too easy And it's not making them stretch like I want
- 1:26:14to stretch your thinking. I want, I want you to say I want
- 1:26:19you to feel the same way you do in science class or in history
- 1:26:23or in math. I want you to feel that, but I
- 1:26:26don't want you to feel it by yourself.
- 1:26:28We're going to. Talk through it.
- 1:26:29We're going to work through it. We're going to look at video.
- 1:26:31We're going to approach this the same way you would when you're
- 1:26:34going out there busting out the maids.
- 1:26:37And you may not get it right away, but hang in there long
- 1:26:41enough because because it's not the the test is not coming out
- 1:26:45of test is going to come in December.
- 1:26:46Really, the big tests for us are March.
- 1:26:48April and June. So, so let's let's let's work
- 1:26:51through it. It's almost like a high level AP
- 1:26:53course that's kind of betraying it.
- 1:26:54But like not talking over their heads.
- 1:26:57We put things in a very common place, like for example I'll
- 1:26:59say. Hey, you know.
- 1:27:01A sprinter's legs or you're supposed to your body works like
- 1:27:05a spring. There are two kinds of springs
- 1:27:07that I give an example of. I'll say you can have a tight
- 1:27:09spring or a loose spring. The tight spring is like on a
- 1:27:13Pogo stick. Did you see a like anyone ever
- 1:27:16seen a poker stick? Yeah, that spring is tight.
- 1:27:19And that what happens when that tight spring hits the ground
- 1:27:22bang you get, you know, the the the reaction off the ground.
- 1:27:25It it it propels you or projects you forward at at at a higher
- 1:27:30height or a higher distance. There's also a loose spring.
- 1:27:33You ever open up a ballpoint pen that.
- 1:27:36One right here and it's the loose.
- 1:27:37Spring in here. There's a little loose spring.
- 1:27:40I can't even get the spring out. That loose spring, What happens
- 1:27:45with it? Nothing much, Right.
- 1:27:48Well, do you want to be a tight spring or do you want to be a
- 1:27:50loose spring? I want to be a tight spring.
- 1:27:52OK, well, here's how you do it. You see what I'm saying?
- 1:27:54So just using different analogies like that.
- 1:27:57And that may not have been something that resonates from
- 1:27:59anybody. Like that was the dumbest thing
- 1:28:00I heard. Yeah, fine.
- 1:28:02But I don't need everybody to get it.
- 1:28:03I need somebody to get it. And then I'll figure out
- 1:28:05something for somebody else. So, you know, that's how we
- 1:28:09approach it. You know, we don't overtrain, We
- 1:28:13don't, I don't believe it or not, we don't do a lot of
- 1:28:14overdistance stuff. So we're probably not on the
- 1:28:16Clyde Hart stuff. Believe it or not, some of that
- 1:28:19stuff is also it's kind of overly hyped meaning because my,
- 1:28:23my, I didn't train with Clyde Hart, but my college teammate
- 1:28:28did. And some of that stuff is like
- 1:28:29they're not really doing that. Or you may it may seem like
- 1:28:33they're. Volume, volume, volume.
- 1:28:34They're really not. All the time at least, but we're
- 1:28:38we're we're very low volume. We're quality over quantity.
- 1:28:42You know, we did a workout just recently.
- 1:28:46It totaled 700 meters over the whole workout and we're done.
- 1:28:52It was 300 and it was 202 hundred and we're done.
- 1:28:58But trust me, at the at the clip we did them, we did, we got our
- 1:29:03work in the hardest workout ever.
- 1:29:06You probably have to ask the kids that.
- 1:29:08There's one that they did at Quincy, actually.
- 1:29:12He was like, you are just, you're just, you're evil for
- 1:29:15that. And I didn't.
- 1:29:18I personally think the hardest one we do is different than
- 1:29:23theirs. So they all have a different
- 1:29:25one. I think it was like 321.
- 1:29:31And then I, I think we went, I just maybe 323 or something like
- 1:29:40that, But you know, it may not have been that because that's
- 1:29:42actually sounds like in my brain.
- 1:29:43That's, that's a lot of volume for us.
- 1:29:45But I, we have a signature workout that we do that he, he's
- 1:29:54going to hate that. And I told him I'm gonna get him
- 1:29:56because when, sometimes when he's on interviews, he like he,
- 1:29:58he throws shots at me like I know what he's saying.
- 1:30:01And I'm like, why did you do that?
- 1:30:02Because it was fun. So we did this work out one
- 1:30:07time, 300 and we had a 300 at near race pace.
- 1:30:11And then we'll we'll do depending upon how fast the 300
- 1:30:15was, we'll do multiple rounds of twos.
- 1:30:17And he threw up after the 1st 300.
- 1:30:21And which by the way is not uncommon for him, he throws up
- 1:30:24all the time, like every week. It throws up like no exception.
- 1:30:28Why? Doesn't mean he has a weak
- 1:30:30stomach. No, it means he's giving
- 1:30:31everything like he's, he's literally laying it on the line.
- 1:30:35So he threw up and I, it was one of those days where he's like,
- 1:30:38sometimes I'll throw up and just keep going.
- 1:30:39Other times I'll throw up and he'll just like lie there.
- 1:30:42I'm like, get up, Wilson. Wilson, get up.
- 1:30:47So he was one of those like, I can't get up, coach.
- 1:30:50I'm like, OK, the workout's clearly done, but he gets out.
- 1:30:53He's like, can you just like, can you help me?
- 1:30:55Like like my calves cramping up and my stomach is like, can you
- 1:30:58help me? So I'm over to help him.
- 1:31:00I'm I'm. I'm.
- 1:31:01I'm looking at him, I'm helping him stretch his calf out.
- 1:31:04You know, he pushed the calf out and I'm looking, I'm like
- 1:31:06looking at my hands and my on my pants.
- 1:31:08I'm like, I've got throw up all over me too.
- 1:31:11And he thought that was the funniest thing.
- 1:31:13Like I guess we're in this together.
- 1:31:15I'm like get away from me. So now I'm like, I'm in my car.
- 1:31:18I'm like. I smell like this.
- 1:31:19It's. A horrible mess, but.
- 1:31:21He. Finished the workout, I said to
- 1:31:22say but that one because he threw up and then he had
- 1:31:25multiple twos after that. I would probably say that's the
- 1:31:29one that most of the kids don't like, but they all have their
- 1:31:33own special ones for sure. You know anyone that you end up
- 1:31:36that you as the coach end up with throw up on, that's going
- 1:31:39to be the hardest workout for sure.
- 1:31:41I was so. Mad dude.
- 1:31:42And I didn't realize until it was too late and he knew it and
- 1:31:46he just, he invited me over there.
- 1:31:47Like can you help me? And it was, I mean, it was on
- 1:31:49his shoes. It was on his pants.
- 1:31:52And then of. Course it's on mine.
- 1:31:54Whatever. But yeah, I.
- 1:31:55Love it. I love it.
- 1:31:57All right, Brad Leto says precocious athletes often peak
- 1:32:01very early. Now there's a whole discussion
- 1:32:04around that. Coach, do you accept this
- 1:32:07premise? And if so, are there any
- 1:32:09training ideas, protocols you might use to lengthen the upside
- 1:32:13path of such athletes? Well, I don't think we have to
- 1:32:19accept it. I think we've just proven that
- 1:32:21that that the concept of peaking too early needs to be
- 1:32:26eradicated. Everybody trust me and I, my
- 1:32:30coaches get on me and my friends get on me.
- 1:32:32Like you got to stop reading the Internet like, and I'm getting
- 1:32:34better, but I, I still read a lot When I hear people saying
- 1:32:38you're peaking him too early and you know he's going to burn out
- 1:32:41and all those other kind of stuff, I'm like, all right, part
- 1:32:43of it fuels me. I'm like, all right, we're just
- 1:32:44going to prove ourselves right. I don't need to prove you wrong.
- 1:32:46We're going to prove ourselves right.
- 1:32:47And then when people like, he's not going to be able to handle
- 1:32:49the rounds at, at the trials, I'm like, did you just see this
- 1:32:52kid just put 244 splits together at pin relays and six interview
- 1:32:57rather within five hours, Like, OK, a full day.
- 1:33:01We got, you mean we get a day to recover and then there's one of
- 1:33:04them. We have a day break in between.
- 1:33:06Oh, that's like Christmas to us. And so I, I, I don't believe
- 1:33:11that there is a, that you can peak athletes if you make sure
- 1:33:16that you are staying true to your plan, like plan the work
- 1:33:20and then work the plan and then listen to what the plan is
- 1:33:23saying along the way because of the plan will speak.
- 1:33:25It's got a lot to say. So I, I, I, I'm looking at the
- 1:33:29numbers, I'm looking at the results.
- 1:33:30I'm, I'm looking at, you know, what's happening and just adjust
- 1:33:34accordingly. So I believe that you run fast
- 1:33:38and then you run faster. I'm not going to slow with you
- 1:33:41all. You're running too fast now.
- 1:33:42No, like, but but it starts with me.
- 1:33:48Like I'm not going to say let's go out and run all out two
- 1:33:51hundreds in in November. If yeah, then that's my fault.
- 1:33:57That's poor planning. On my side.
- 1:33:59But if I'm running, let's just say we're running 52 hundreds in
- 1:34:02November at 85% and they're running them, that translates to
- 1:34:1021 flat. I'm not going to slow you down.
- 1:34:13I'm going to say, OK, guess what, you're, you're on pace to
- 1:34:17run 21 flat. Do you want to run 20.8?
- 1:34:20You better believe I do, coach. All right, then let's let's
- 1:34:23let's let's save a 10th here or 2/10 here.
- 1:34:27Like I just believe we get too scared, like scared money.
- 1:34:31Don't make money. Like don't get scared of it.
- 1:34:34Don't be afraid of the numbers. Listen to what the numbers say
- 1:34:36and then go after it. So no, and and he proved it
- 1:34:38personally. I mean, we know we could have
- 1:34:40ran faster than 44 five. We know and we know where our
- 1:34:44mistakes were. We know we're we're going to
- 1:34:46improve things, but no, if we would have taken that passive
- 1:34:50approach or just, you know, you can't pee too soon and all that
- 1:34:53kind of stuff like no, let's we're running, let's go, we're
- 1:34:55competing and we're planning for this.
- 1:34:58I believe when you do it that way, I believe that there are a
- 1:35:02limit that you don't set limits. And you never want to do that
- 1:35:06with athletes either. You don't tell what they can't
- 1:35:08do. Always tell them what they can.
- 1:35:10I. Love that Next question comes
- 1:35:12from a good friend Amanda Hollis.
- 1:35:14Amanda says what does Quincy's recovery look like between meats
- 1:35:18and practices etcetera. Oh and nutrition.
- 1:35:19What are his go to foods for fuel?
- 1:35:24Well, it's now thing he's into this thing now, like making
- 1:35:27smoothies. He swears he's the Smoothie
- 1:35:28King, no pun intended. Not not trying to get an
- 1:35:32endorsement deal there. He swears he is.
- 1:35:36And the funny part is, the other day of practice he was like.
- 1:35:42My stomach, I'm like, what? Is wrong with you boy and he's
- 1:35:44like. Gosh, my stomach.
- 1:35:45I was like. What happened?
- 1:35:46He's like, I've made one of my smoothie so.
- 1:35:49But I think I put too much protein in it's.
- 1:35:51Like now do the smoothie cane like so he's like, but it was
- 1:35:56good though, so and so you know, he's he's he's a very conscious
- 1:36:02eater. I remember when when Noah was in
- 1:36:06high school, Noah and Josephus were in high school and our our
- 1:36:11program hadn't yet arrived to the level where we are now.
- 1:36:14But being around them, it was really great because they were
- 1:36:18already high level, high level athletes in high school as we
- 1:36:21know. And it was an athlete on my team
- 1:36:24was just talking about, yeah, I'm up there after my race, I'm
- 1:36:26going to go get some. Candy and Nowhere yells.
- 1:36:28She's like. What?
- 1:36:29You can't do that? You could not put that in your
- 1:36:32body. Are you crazy?
- 1:36:34I didn't have to say a word. I was just sitting back like,
- 1:36:36oh, I'm loving this. And he's like, no, your body's
- 1:36:40like a machine. It's like a.
- 1:36:41Ferrari, but, well, you know, he's.
- 1:36:43Like he's, he's laying into one of my athletes who just thought,
- 1:36:46you know, I'm going to get a candy.
- 1:36:48Bar after the race. And and that memory of that,
- 1:36:51that probably was, you know, 10 years ago.
- 1:36:54Or maybe about 10. Probably definitely.
- 1:36:56Eight years ago, it resonated because we began to emphasize
- 1:37:03nutrition to our athletes to work.
- 1:37:05Now it's a part of our culture. Now, do everyone of my athletes
- 1:37:08eat phenomenally? No.
- 1:37:10But OK, You're, you're, you're going to have to live with the.
- 1:37:14Consequences of a poor. Eating I don't think anyone
- 1:37:17needs. Porn team but but.
- 1:37:18The better I eat, the better I'll be.
- 1:37:20So with Quincy, he he, he's locked into that like he, he, he
- 1:37:25does it. He eats well, he eats clean.
- 1:37:27He eats the right things. And, you know, will he
- 1:37:33occasionally do something just that to treat himself?
- 1:37:35Yeah. And I think that's that's OK.
- 1:37:37Like, don't be a robot where you can never, ever, ever do
- 1:37:41something. But to make it like a consistent
- 1:37:44part of your diet, like candy bars after races, that's just,
- 1:37:47that's just not smart because you're putting so much into
- 1:37:50this. Like.
- 1:37:52Give yourself a chance to get it the best outs.
- 1:37:55He's good with that kind of stuff.
- 1:37:57And yeah, if you need a smoothie recipe, hit a button.
- 1:38:00He's the guy. All right, this next question is
- 1:38:04interesting. You know, I've seen him run
- 1:38:07several times in person on TV and stuff like that.
- 1:38:09And I guess I never I'm either so far out of it.
- 1:38:13This didn't even register to me or I just know that there's so
- 1:38:16many uniquenesses from 1 athlete to the next that I like.
- 1:38:21I don't even think about it in that sense.
- 1:38:23And I used to cook, you know, my favorite event to coach was the
- 1:38:25high hurdles. And you know, there's the
- 1:38:27stereotypical what a high hurdler is supposed to look
- 1:38:29like. And then you go watch the real
- 1:38:30world and they all have, you know, Grant's form is different
- 1:38:33than Trey's, different than Freddie's, etcetera.
- 1:38:35So Jeffrey over on Twitter asked does Quincy's running form
- 1:38:40affect his performance? Now, on face value, that it's
- 1:38:42not a great question because of course everybody's form affects
- 1:38:46the performance. I think what Jeffrey's getting
- 1:38:48at is that, you know, some people have said that Quincy has
- 1:38:51a bad running form. Again, I haven't.
- 1:38:53I, I, this is, I've heard it, but I just don't see it.
- 1:38:57What can you talk to us about? Quincy's technique, The running
- 1:39:00form? Well, I understand the question
- 1:39:04and I would just respond to it by absolutely this is running
- 1:39:07for perfect effect his performance.
- 1:39:11It absolutely does in a good way.
- 1:39:14Like so you know, every athlete, again, you can't put everyone
- 1:39:19into a box. Like every athlete has
- 1:39:21strengths, weaknesses, their body composition to make up is
- 1:39:24different. So if I were to go tinker, and
- 1:39:27again I am, trust me, I'm that guy, I'm the one who's looking
- 1:39:30at the angles and the bio mechanics and you know all the,
- 1:39:33you know, the stick figure kind of stuff.
- 1:39:35I'm that guy. But if I mess with it too much,
- 1:39:39you know, I'm messing with, to a certain degree, what what brings
- 1:39:43out his greatness Prince has. Very long levers, right?
- 1:39:50It's long arms long. Legs, right.
- 1:39:53So I can't make him look like something that he's not simply
- 1:39:57just to to go ahead and to try to align the models.
- 1:40:02No, So I got OK, what works well with him and with his body
- 1:40:07composition because his is not he's not Bryce Deadman or he's
- 1:40:12not Quincy Hall. That's a different Quincy.
- 1:40:15He's not Vernon Norwood, he's Quincy Wilson.
- 1:40:18So what works for him? And then let's make sure we're
- 1:40:23we're as efficient as possible. I think the question comes to is
- 1:40:26he being more efficient or is he being less efficient?
- 1:40:29And if we? Made him more efficient.
- 1:40:30Will he be faster? Well, well, I think you got to
- 1:40:33be very careful when you start to do those kind of things.
- 1:40:35You know, back in the day, everybody told, told told
- 1:40:38Michael Johnson how he. Was running.
- 1:40:39Yeah, probably the best case. Example.
- 1:40:42Exactly right. So you have to understand, first
- 1:40:46of all, look at what's happening.
- 1:40:49Blue Sex Matter talks about this a lot like everybody
- 1:40:52overemphasizes the arms. Is his, his, his philosophy on
- 1:40:55that? It's really what's happening
- 1:40:57with the legs because that's what's touching ground, that's
- 1:40:59what's going forward, that's what's.
- 1:41:00Bringing propelling movement. Patterns all right, and as long
- 1:41:04as that's not constricted or restricted, let's not give so
- 1:41:08much credit to the arms that's that that that it doesn't
- 1:41:10deserve. So Quincy has a a a unique arm
- 1:41:14carry. I get it.
- 1:41:16OK, now what I cared about more than his arms.
- 1:41:19I cared about his front side mechanics and if you watch how
- 1:41:23he's front side out of the blocks now and, and, and as he
- 1:41:26transitions to upright and we're still working on some things,
- 1:41:29but you'll see a very different principle than you saw in 8th or
- 1:41:329th grade. So trust me, the guy, the kick
- 1:41:35and Sprint, we know like if we ran him at a 200, like healthy,
- 1:41:39prepared and all that, he's going to run 20 low. 20.3 is
- 1:41:43right now where we have him. You know, that's where his
- 1:41:46numbers test that you're not running 20.3 running backs up.
- 1:41:50He's not, you're not doing that. So he knows how to Sprint now.
- 1:41:54He's a better overall athlete now.
- 1:41:58Does he tilt his head back? Yeah, he tilts his head back
- 1:42:00like he's 8 years old. And but that's to me, that's
- 1:42:03messing with his superpower because he goes into a space
- 1:42:08that we know not of I'm. We I'm being real, for real.
- 1:42:13On this he goes into a space and if that hell if he needs to tilt
- 1:42:17that head back to go there. And if you watch the Olympic
- 1:42:20trials, how he started snatching people in the last hundred, I
- 1:42:23would rather him tilt that head back and go into that space then
- 1:42:27try to force himself to keep his his.
- 1:42:29You know his, his, his. Channel line with his shoulders
- 1:42:32and you know run 45904590 then it's going to you're you're
- 1:42:36messing with the gift. So I I my thing is what's what's
- 1:42:41happening to lower extremities upper we'll we'll make sure
- 1:42:44we're we're we're working a little bit at a time and it may
- 1:42:47never look like everybody thinks it should.
- 1:42:50But my response to you is neither will the clock.
- 1:42:54I like that because, you know, we talk about how important the
- 1:42:57mental side is and yet we'll talk so to your, you know, to
- 1:43:01your example there about he goes into a space we do not know of,
- 1:43:04but then we talk about, oh, but it's way more important his
- 1:43:06technique. And it's like, well, if that's
- 1:43:08what he needs to get to that zone, that's where we see things
- 1:43:12happen that we we've never seen and and never thought we would
- 1:43:15see. So that that's a good example.
- 1:43:16All right, last few questions here.
- 1:43:17We've got about 10 more minutes for your next autograph session
- 1:43:20or whatever you're. Into, Yeah.
- 1:43:24Called training children, that's what I.
- 1:43:26OK, that's fair. That's fair, I guess, Coach
- 1:43:28Dalts says as Quincy matures, if not already, how will his weight
- 1:43:33training evolve as he gets older?
- 1:43:34That's something we don't talk about very much on the track and
- 1:43:37field side. What about his weight training?
- 1:43:39Yeah. So, you know, we have a specific
- 1:43:41and, and unique weight training program and within our annual
- 1:43:45plan and it's very specific and unique to their, their event.
- 1:43:50So, you know, we have our, like I told you, coach Kenny, who is
- 1:43:55our, our, our team, the Kanichi specialist.
- 1:43:57And he's also. Again, he's very.
- 1:43:58Knowledgeable track and field. He's a collegiate track and
- 1:44:00field participant at at Upenn. He knows the game and what we
- 1:44:06do. We, we, we work on more tendon
- 1:44:08and ligament strength and stiffness rather than trying to
- 1:44:11lift the weight out of the gym. So we're not like, we're not
- 1:44:15trying to like, oh, how much can you squat and all that kind of
- 1:44:18stuff. Like, because it's, it's not
- 1:44:20sport transferable. It's not like, like what, like
- 1:44:25what do you need? You need a.
- 1:44:27You need a stiff ankle to push through so that you can.
- 1:44:30Minimize minimize ground contact on So how do I.
- 1:44:33Stiffen the ankle. I got to do the research on
- 1:44:35that. OK, so we, we when you say
- 1:44:39weight training for us, like it's really more, it's really
- 1:44:43more strength training and strengthening the proper places
- 1:44:48on your body, within your body so that you can maximize your
- 1:44:52output. So, you know, we again, we're
- 1:44:56just now the interesting part about it is when some of my kids
- 1:44:59come back from college, they're like, Coach Lee, we're doing
- 1:45:03this stuff in college too. I'm like, oh, really?
- 1:45:05I'm thinking to myself, yeah, that's kind of what got you
- 1:45:07there, right. But you know, and again, that's
- 1:45:11that whole thing like, you know, you know, bigger is better and
- 1:45:15it's not, it's just different. You know, I mean, we're not, I'm
- 1:45:18not down in colleges and down in pros.
- 1:45:20Again, I want to be clear, there's some great college.
- 1:45:22There's some coaches out there way better than me, you know,
- 1:45:25way better than, than, than, than, you know what I even know
- 1:45:29up to this point in my life. But we, we, like I said,
- 1:45:32collaboratively, we, we, we do our work, we do our homework,
- 1:45:34right? We do, we do our research.
- 1:45:36So as he grows into that, again, we, we do things in cycles, 4
- 1:45:41year cycles, 2 year, one year, and then we break it down, you
- 1:45:44know, incrementally into the annual plan.
- 1:45:46Yeah, he'll continue to get stronger, but in the areas where
- 1:45:48he needs it. I don't need him to bench press
- 1:45:51275 lbs. I don't care.
- 1:45:53It's not sports specific. It doesn't matter, OK?
- 1:45:58What I need him to do is to be able to absorb forces and to
- 1:46:02apply forces in a way where he can.
- 1:46:06It will project his body into space at a higher rate of speed.
- 1:46:11So how does that? Work we do that in a weight room
- 1:46:13and see he learns more, he grows more and he's he's 100% locked
- 1:46:17in. You know, he's he's he did well
- 1:46:21last year. He doing even better this year
- 1:46:23and I'm expecting him to do any better next year.
- 1:46:25But we're not again and we're not doing the traditional weight
- 1:46:28training program going squat 10 set set to this and you know, go
- 1:46:32leg press 10 set to no, we're not doing that.
- 1:46:35A lot of stuff, we have dumbbells and we're we're,
- 1:46:37we're, we're doing a lot of plyometric exercises and do some
- 1:46:40fun stuff that they can compete in too, like.
- 1:46:43Box. Jump to you know, hop, you know,
- 1:46:45and then he I hate when he does this after he does some great
- 1:46:49point. You see that you see.
- 1:46:51Look, I'm like, it was all right.
- 1:46:53I'm like, then I have to, you know, say, but you can't get
- 1:46:56here Then he always does. He'll get there, but then one of
- 1:46:59his teammates will compete and it's just a lot of fun.
- 1:47:00But that's that's more sports specific.
- 1:47:02You know, def jump to a Plio, you know, you know, that kind of
- 1:47:06stuff is what we do as opposed to just lifting weights for the
- 1:47:11sake of lifting them. Kind of love it next to last
- 1:47:14question. We kind of touched on this.
- 1:47:15I'll, I'll read it and let you, if you want to add anything
- 1:47:17here. Nico Caravalis, I love him on
- 1:47:19Twitter, by the way. He says, how do you plan to let
- 1:47:22talented young kids still be a young kid and not push him into
- 1:47:25the professional ranks too early so we can see him develop over
- 1:47:28the next decade? So Nico's thinking about long
- 1:47:31term. So how do you work to not push
- 1:47:34him too quickly? Thinking of Quincy at 26, not
- 1:47:38just at 16. Yeah, I mean, well, again, I
- 1:47:42don't it's again, keeping it fun.
- 1:47:44Like we have so much fun, Nico and whoever else would would
- 1:47:48worry about that. I mean, we we make it very hard
- 1:47:53and and in a good way and kind of a fun way.
- 1:47:55But at the same time, seriously, when kids go to college, they're
- 1:47:58like, yeah, culturally it's cool, but you know, it's kind of
- 1:48:01mixing something here and there. Every kid has to say that, but a
- 1:48:04lot do. The family aspect, you know, we,
- 1:48:06we have traditions. On our team, that.
- 1:48:08We only know about them. We only do we have sayings.
- 1:48:11You know we have, you know. They do things like they have
- 1:48:14their coastly impersonations, which are freaking hilarious and
- 1:48:17I hate every one of them that they're and they just won't
- 1:48:20stop. I mean, they're they'll do
- 1:48:21things like they'll prank me or every year on my birthday.
- 1:48:24Like we have this war we have, we have a, we have a, we have a
- 1:48:28water war where like, like they will like it started out like,
- 1:48:33you know, couple of water balloons.
- 1:48:36Now it's like they, they have tubs of water and these water
- 1:48:39guns and it's like 1000 water balloons.
- 1:48:42And I thought I had them this year because I loaded up, I had
- 1:48:44these two water guns and all these water balloons.
- 1:48:47And they just, they, they, it's almost like they, it was like a
- 1:48:52movie where they just came out of nowhere and they all just
- 1:48:55were armed and dangerous. And I literally I, I, I heard
- 1:49:01myself squeaking as I. Walked away from.
- 1:49:04My defeat, but I will get you all next year if you're watching
- 1:49:06this. I have a plan and my plan will
- 1:49:10win. So, you know, I mean just we
- 1:49:13have fun when we have fun. When you keep it fun, people
- 1:49:16tend to come back and they tend to want to do more of it.
- 1:49:19The main thing is just keep it fun in your own way.
- 1:49:21You know, whatever you're doing on your team and make sure it's
- 1:49:23good fun. It's not like fun that's, you
- 1:49:25know, degrading anyone or demoralize or demeaning someone.
- 1:49:29That's not fun. That's not cool at all.
- 1:49:32But what's what's fun is when you're doing things together and
- 1:49:35then again, you're keeping the main thing, the main thing.
- 1:49:37We talked about that before, but don't let any bosses play and
- 1:49:40become. Your own and.
- 1:49:40When you do that, it typically works out.
- 1:49:43All right, last question. It's a good, I think it's a good
- 1:49:45last question because again, when you're listening to the
- 1:49:47Olympics are over. So now officially Quincy's
- 1:49:50season is over. So Coach Abe says, I've known
- 1:49:54and watched Quincy run since the Virginia elite days as my son
- 1:49:57competed on the same team. Kid is a freak athlete and even
- 1:50:00more phenomenal person. Question I would ask Joe is
- 1:50:04what's the offseason regiment look like?
- 1:50:08Yeah, I'll answer that before I say this.
- 1:50:09I don't know that I agree that he's a freak athlete.
- 1:50:13Quincy superpower guys is this He has a will and a
- 1:50:18determination. We give his all.
- 1:50:20He has a will and he literally is willing to hurt more than
- 1:50:25anybody else in the competition. His superpower, he doesn't care.
- 1:50:30He little doesn't care that how bad how much it hurts.
- 1:50:33He doesn't He doesn't factor that into the equation.
- 1:50:36In other words, his other superpower, not just that is the
- 1:50:39will, it's also his mindset. He he, he, he, he believes.
- 1:50:44He believes in himself. He believes in his his, his
- 1:50:47coaches. He believes in his his circle
- 1:50:49of, of support. He believes.
- 1:50:53The other thing is he's got heart.
- 1:50:55He just he what's on the inside that those those are
- 1:51:00superpowers. He's not an overly imposing
- 1:51:02figure. He ain't 62 like me.
- 1:51:03And, you know, he's like, you know, like you see some of these
- 1:51:06young, younger phenoms and some of them and I'm not, you know,
- 1:51:09throwing them. Don't change it any of them.
- 1:51:11But like you're like, oh, yeah, he looks like a pro where he
- 1:51:14look like there's a picture of of Princey running against Bryce
- 1:51:18Deadman. It is so funny.
- 1:51:20Like they're up against each other.
- 1:51:21Bryce is like my height and Quincy's like 5758 and they're
- 1:51:25side by side and it's the funniest looking thing ever
- 1:51:28because it's like this. It's like, it's like, it's like
- 1:51:32somebody. It's like he's he's, he's
- 1:51:33running underground. Because he's, he's, he's, he's
- 1:51:39just so much shorter, right? He's got to get mad at me for
- 1:51:41that. Good.
- 1:51:42Because you've been killing me. So, yeah, so that that's his
- 1:51:46superpower, man. And and and.
- 1:51:48So I'm not saying he's not a not a phenomenal athlete, certainly
- 1:51:51is, but a freakish athlete. He's not that.
- 1:51:53I think the distinction you're making that I'm here in any way
- 1:51:55is, you know, sometimes when we use the word freak athlete, it's
- 1:51:58like, oh, it comes easily because it's so genetically like
- 1:52:00it just comes easy. And and whether Quincy ran
- 1:52:03nothing at practice or ran the the actual workouts, he would
- 1:52:06run this anyway. It's like, oh, no, no, obviously
- 1:52:08he has genetic talent, but he also works extremely hard at it
- 1:52:11is what I do. What I hear you making a
- 1:52:13distinction of a freak athlete. So.
- 1:52:15Yeah, absolutely all. Right now the part.
- 1:52:17Now again because my ADD. Kicks in.
- 1:52:19What was the part for you? What?
- 1:52:22What is the offseason? Because now when people are
- 1:52:25listening to this, we're officially in offseason.
- 1:52:27There's no, I'm assuming he's not going.
- 1:52:29I assume there's diamond leagues or something after Olympics
- 1:52:31because our sport is weird like that.
- 1:52:32But the offseason is here. Now he starts putting his
- 1:52:35attention to 2025. What does the offseason regiment
- 1:52:38look like? I.
- 1:52:39Mean he's got to get ready for high school.
- 1:52:41These pros can go and they can kick their feet up and all that
- 1:52:45he's got, he's got he's got classes that are going to happen
- 1:52:47in a couple weeks. So he's going to rest, enjoy
- 1:52:49time with his family. He's probably going to eat some
- 1:52:52things that he's always going to eat all season.
- 1:52:54He's going to play a play a lot of Call of Duty.
- 1:52:56That's his thing. You know, he's very good at
- 1:52:58video games. Apparently I haven't challenged
- 1:53:00him yet and that I've challenged him in basketball and I won't
- 1:53:02tell it the result of that. But we he's he's he's going to
- 1:53:07have fun like a like a normal kid and finish the rest of his
- 1:53:09summer. His summer ends early because
- 1:53:11he's got obviously go back to school.
- 1:53:13You know and. You know, it gets to go back to
- 1:53:15school, I should say, you know, because, you know, education is
- 1:53:17first. Then, then we'll get back at it,
- 1:53:21you know, sometime in the fall and we'll start this fun ride
- 1:53:25all over again. You know, Joe, as I sit here and
- 1:53:29listen, you know we've been going now we're out of time by
- 1:53:32the way. So I'll make this quick, but you
- 1:53:33know we getting close to two hours you and I did two hours
- 1:53:36for your own specific. Journey and we always say we're
- 1:53:40not going to be this. Long.
- 1:53:41I know, I know, I know. I love it.
- 1:53:43What did I say before he records?
- 1:53:44Like I just won't even be an hour.
- 1:53:47But I tell you what. What's interesting, if I had the
- 1:53:49dedication to do this, I would, but you know I don't.
- 1:53:52I would love to go back. So maybe someone will do this.
- 1:53:54Go back and listen and count the number of times Jolie says fun.
- 1:54:00I think that's important because you know, sometimes, again,
- 1:54:04whether it's Internet or movies, etcetera, we think about these
- 1:54:06high level programs and no matter what sport, baseball,
- 1:54:08football, etcetera. And we think about the
- 1:54:10militaristic coach, the guy, you know, you know, Mike, we, we
- 1:54:14show up at 3:00 and you know, it's, it's balls to the walls
- 1:54:17for an hour and a half. And you know, if they miss, they
- 1:54:19do these blah, blah, blah. And I just heard the word fun
- 1:54:24over and over. And how do you keep them from
- 1:54:27peeking too early? You know what we we don't take
- 1:54:28ourselves too seriously. We have fun.
- 1:54:31How do you relate to the kids? You know, I asked them about the
- 1:54:33animes, though. It's having fun that I think is
- 1:54:37maybe the most important lesson in this whole thing that my
- 1:54:40paraphrasing here, not to take yourself too seriously, whether
- 1:54:43that kids running 46 or 56. I love that other kid that you
- 1:54:46shouted out, by the way, the the 62nd kid to 53 second, because
- 1:54:49to me that is as important. I know that kid doesn't get the
- 1:54:51accolades Quincy's getting, but dude, you're improving, You're
- 1:54:55helping that kid have positive experiences with our sport.
- 1:54:58That is equally important. It truly is.
- 1:55:02It's really is. I love that.
- 1:55:03So I just think that's a real lesson to take away is having
- 1:55:06fun with this. At the end of the day, it is a
- 1:55:08sport. At the end of the day, it's a
- 1:55:09high level sport and there's certainly money to be made and
- 1:55:12scholarships to be earned and things like that.
- 1:55:14But at the end of the day, man, if we're not having fun, no
- 1:55:16matter what you're doing, you're the coach, the athlete, me as
- 1:55:18the, the sales dude, If we're not having fun, what are you
- 1:55:21doing? Buy something else.
- 1:55:25It's not working if you're not having fun.
- 1:55:27So I love hearing that theme from you repeatedly, Joe.
- 1:55:31That's, that was, that's, it's real heartwarming.
- 1:55:32It makes me feel real good about him being in the in the right
- 1:55:35hands with the support system that he has coaching and family
- 1:55:38and friends and stuff. That's really cool, man.
- 1:55:40I love hearing that. Hey, man.
- 1:55:42Well, hey, that's, that's that's all I know.
- 1:55:44That's what we're doing. So we're going to keep doing it
- 1:55:46because it's working. Yeah.
- 1:55:47Certainly is. All right, Joe, thank you so
- 1:55:49much. Again, we really appreciate
- 1:55:50hearing this. You know, this is a unique
- 1:55:51aspect. Not many, not many.
- 1:55:55Do any high schoolers make the Olympics?
- 1:55:58It's so. Rare.
- 1:55:59I can't think of it off the top of my head.
- 1:56:02It's awesome to see a young man having success and and staying
- 1:56:07humble again. I think that's where he won the
- 1:56:08hearts of everybody was through his interviews besides what he
- 1:56:11was doing with his legs out there.
- 1:56:12So that was quite amazing. Again, by the time you're
- 1:56:16listening to this, you already know what the mix relay is going
- 1:56:18down. We're still got the 4x4 coming
- 1:56:20up. So who knows?
- 1:56:21We, you know, there's no, no telling if Quincy doesn't make
- 1:56:23an appearance there either, I'm not going to take it off the
- 1:56:25table. Joe would get mad at me if I did
- 1:56:27anyway. So, you know, this is not maybe
- 1:56:29just a mix relay thing. Who sees?
- 1:56:30Who knows what he'll do out there at the Olympics.
- 1:56:33We've already got you on wax. You're going to come back after
- 1:56:35the Olympics. Let's talk about that
- 1:56:36experience. This is an experience that
- 1:56:38hardly anybody ever gets to do. You're in a very small
- 1:56:41fraternity, my friend, someone who was coached an Olympian that
- 1:56:44is a very, very small fraternity.
- 1:56:46So we'll have you back and talk about that experience and what
- 1:56:50what was cool, what was not so cool, what surprised you And,
- 1:56:53and we'll already know the results and we'll talk about
- 1:56:55that a little bit as well. Does that sound good?
- 1:56:57Sounds like a plan my friend, I appreciate it.
- 1:56:59Awesome, guys. Thank you again for being here.
- 1:57:01Enjoy the Olympics. It's going on right now.
- 1:57:03It's the greatest of the pinnacle of our sport.
- 1:57:06And I think us supporting it is gonna be vital for the rest of
- 1:57:09the world. And Joe, we support you, man.
- 1:57:10All of us. From Gil.
- 1:57:11I'll speak for. I rarely do this.
- 1:57:13I'll speak for the entire track community, the entire Track
- 1:57:15World, the haters, the fans, everybody.
- 1:57:19We're praying for health, like go have fun, be healthy, come
- 1:57:23back. We just want to see putting on a
- 1:57:25show, baby. We just want to see a show,
- 1:57:27whether it's in Paris, whether it's at Penn, whether it's at a
- 1:57:30local dual meet, we don't care. We just want to see a show and
- 1:57:34we just appreciate being able to to watch the show from the
- 1:57:37sidelines, my friend. So we're rooting for you and
- 1:57:39praying for you guys for all things OK.
- 1:57:42Thanks, Mike. We appreciate it, man.
- 1:57:44We're going to go after it. Absolutely.
- 1:57:45All right, everybody, thanks for being here today.
- 1:57:47We appreciate you. Join us next week, we'll do it
- 1:57:49all over again and we'll have some fun.
- 1:57:50See you guys. If it goes to we appreciate the
- 1:57:53coach the ones that pour people most every season needs a voice

- 1:58:11purpose ain't clear, it can't happen to you.
- 1:58:13Listen, we're both is. You can't mentor without a
- 1:58:16mentor of experience. You can reinvent those years
- 1:58:19every plan's got to stand and deliver to and the price
- 1:58:22sacrifice can you give up you. It's a choice and a fight, not a
- 1:58:26win or lose. It's not a ploy boy device y'all
- 1:58:28can make more moves. It's not about how to it's all
