- 0:00Hi everybody, welcome back to the show.
- 0:01Today's episode is all about the IFT 3 flight for the Starship
- 0:06Super Heavy from Boca Chica Starbase, Texas.
- 0:09We're going to talk about the mission that's going to be
- 0:11happening during this flight because it's impressive what
- 0:14SpaceX is going to be trying to accomplish with this one as
- 0:17opposed to the IFT 2 hot sieging was super impressive.
- 0:20They got that pretty much right. Now we know the booster blew up
- 0:24and we know the ship blew up, but there are some things that
- 0:27they could be doing with the next flight that are absolutely
- 0:32necessary for the Artemis 3 mission.
- 0:34And these just came up a little bit ago and I want to show you a
- 0:37few of these things happening. The human landing system
- 0:39activities which were this is part of a slide from a NASA
- 0:42presentation the other day. They show here that several
- 0:46milestones completed including a vacuum optimized Raptor
- 0:49performance test that successfully confirmed the
- 0:51engine can be started in the extreme colder conditions result
- 0:54resulting from extended time and space.
- 0:56I can believe their second Starship flight test and are
- 0:58quickly moving towards their third, which will include a
- 1:02propellant transfer demonstration.
- 1:05That's what we're talking about today, the propellant transfer
- 1:08demonstration. Because what they need to do is
- 1:11they need to send starships to orbit around the Earth in that
- 1:16they have tankers of Starship propellant in orbit in.
- 1:21The Starship will mate with those tankers and then they'll
- 1:23transfer propellant from the tanker to the ship and then the
- 1:26ship will go to the moon or wherever else it's going to be
- 1:29going. Right.
- 1:30So let's take a look at this real quick because I think this
- 1:32is an important thing that we have to talk about today.
- 1:35The you see the starships here circling these right now and we
- 1:40see the propellant tanker is it's almost twice as high as you
- 1:45can see. It's about, I did not not a
- 1:48perfectly straight line there, but it's pretty close and as you
- 1:51can see there's a little bit of a, it's a little bit different
- 1:53here, it's a little bit taller, little bit bigger.
- 1:56And if we go back to this slide, completed the 2nd Starship
- 2:00flight test and then quickly towards the third which will
- 2:03include a propellant transfer demonstration.
- 2:06Now, do they mean a full transfer?
- 2:10And do they have a propellant tanker ready to go at Starbase?
- 2:15And the answer to that is probably not.
- 2:19OK. So more than likely, and this is
- 2:22actually being confirmed by a few sources now, this SpaceX
- 2:25will be doing a fluid transfer or a propellant transfer from
- 2:30something to something, from some tank to another tank while
- 2:33they're doing their IFT 3 flight.
- 2:36So they're going to get into space.
- 2:37They broke the carbon line with the IFT 2 flight.
- 2:40So that means they're technically in space.
- 2:42And this is what this NASA tipping point agreement is that
- 2:49SpaceX signed a while ago. So right here, as you can see,
- 2:52SpaceX of Hawthorne Large scale Flight demonstration to transfer
- 2:5610 metric tons of cryogenic propellant, specifically liquid
- 3:01oxygen between tanks on a Starship vehicle.
- 3:05SpaceX will collaborate with a Glen and Marshall.
- 3:08Now these are tipping point selections for NASA for the
- 3:14Artemis program. So 10 metric tons of cryogenic
- 3:18propellant between tanks on a Starship vehicle.
- 3:22So not only are we going to see a transfer of Starship between a
- 3:28tanker, the big propellant tanker in orbit at some point,
- 3:33but this next flight, the I FT3 flight is going to be
- 3:38transferring propellant from one tank to another tank while it's
- 3:43flying. Now this is incredible and these
- 3:47things have been confirmed a few times on social media.
- 3:52And you know, one of the one of the people that confirmed this
- 3:57was Michael Sheets. Of course, space reporter.
- 4:00Everybody knows Michael Sheets, Mike Sheets, the man and NBC
- 4:03guy. So he has space like the third
- 4:07Space Flight will include a propellant transfer.
- 4:09And then he reached out to NASA in the in the later tweet, and
- 4:13we'll talk about that too. Hawkins didn't address the third
- 4:15Starship test flights plans in her remarks.
- 4:17So I've reached out to NASA and SpaceX to clarify what
- 4:20propellant transfer demonstration means in this
- 4:24context. So we already know that the that
- 4:28SpaceX and NASA had the tipping point consideration.
- 4:32And then we're going to take a look at the update from Michael
- 4:34Sheets. NASA confirms A Starship
- 4:36propellant transfer demonstration could happen as
- 4:40soon as the third test flight test of the SpaceX rocket,
- 4:43although the plan is subject to change, and that's what's
- 4:48important here. The subject to change always
- 4:52happens with Space Flight because things might not line up
- 4:56properly for the I FT3 flight. They may not be ready for it.
- 4:59They may not have the right craft properly prepared for this
- 5:05flight for the propellant demonstration, the transfer
- 5:09demonstration. So we're gonna see in the near
- 5:11future if this is actually a thing, we're gonna have to wait
- 5:13for SpaceX to come out and say that the propellant transfer is
- 5:16going to be happening with the IFT 3 flight.
- 5:20Now, this tipping point agreement, let's take another
- 5:22quick look at this cryogenic 10 tons of cryogenic propellant.
- 5:26I know I'm behind that stuff is behind me.
- 5:28But I'll tell you what it says 10 metric tons of cryogenic
- 5:31propellant, specifically liquid oxygen between tanks and a
- 5:34Starship vehicle. That means they're not going to
- 5:36be transferring it to the to the propellant tanker, because the
- 5:41tanker's a whole different beast that's basically a Starship and
- 5:45a half, but full of propellant that they have to shoot up into
- 5:51orbit. And have we already seen sort of
- 5:55a a mock up of this? Not sure yet, but we'll get into
- 5:59that a little bit because that's that's a fun one to think about
- 6:02too. Now, another thing that's
- 6:04interesting, another fun thing to think about for the IFT 3
- 6:08flight. Toby Lee, the internal date for
- 6:11IFT 3 is scheduled for Christmas Day, but that's almost
- 6:14guaranteed to slip. OK, so they're still working on
- 6:18the pad, they're still working on Starbase itself, they're
- 6:22still working on the launch area of Starbase.
- 6:26And they have 20 days to get this right, to to get all the
- 6:33propellant loading, all the all the static fires done, all the
- 6:37stacking. They have to stack, unstack,
- 6:41restack, do fit checks, things like that, in order for them to
- 6:44actually fly this. Could they do that in three
- 6:47weeks? History has shown that they
- 6:52can't really move that fast, and that seems like a horrible thing
- 6:57to say. The SpaceX can't move really
- 6:59fast because they're moving faster than everybody else ever,
- 7:02like, literally ever. They're they're the fastest
- 7:05Space Flight company ever. But can they do this in three
- 7:08weeks? Well, we've seen them static
- 7:11fire numerous times. It takes about, it takes a few
- 7:14days to do a static fire. The static fire itself is only
- 7:18like a couple seconds, you know, like a quick burst.
- 7:22They have to move the booster and the ship down to the flight
- 7:26area and then they have to lift the the the booster onto the pad
- 7:32and around to the mount. Now that takes about a day,
- 7:35right? So then they have to do static
- 7:37fire. They have, they have to do,
- 7:38actually, they have to do propellant filled tests, they
- 7:41have to check out systems. So those usually take the the
- 7:44system. Checkouts usually take another
- 7:46day. Propellant fill tests usually
- 7:48take three or four days altogether, so the booster
- 7:52itself 5-6 days. So they have to do the same
- 7:56thing with the ship, 5-6 days, about a week each, so there's
- 8:00two weeks. Then they have to do stacking,
- 8:04they have to move things around. They have to make sure that
- 8:06everything works properly when it's stacked couple days there
- 8:09and then they have to do, you know, propellant load in the
- 8:14stacked area. They have to get, they have to
- 8:19get certification from the FAA as well and that may take a
- 8:22while. So they may be able to stack it.
- 8:25They may be able to stack it by Christmas Day, but usually in
- 8:30anything tech, anything tech. I've worked in tech for 15 years
- 8:34and engineering, you know, I've been, I've been around engineers
- 8:37my whole life. I know how this works.
- 8:40Usually when they set an internal date, this is for
- 8:43people to aspire to. So the internal date, Christmas
- 8:48Day. This is something for the
- 8:49engineers and the people at Starbase to aspire to get done
- 8:54because everyone's going on break, You know, IFT 3 is
- 8:59scheduled for Christmas Day. It's almost guaranteed a slip.
- 9:03Yeah, Toby Lee, you're right, it's almost guaranteed a slip.
- 9:05But the internal dates are to push people forward so they can
- 9:10continue working as hard as they can and work those long extra
- 9:13hours so they can get everything done before they go home for
- 9:17Christmas break. They get they want to get
- 9:19everything as as good as possible, as done as possible,
- 9:23because they do have a Christmas break at Starbase.
- 9:26They do have Christmas breaks and you know, holiday breaks for
- 9:30people at SpaceX. So if they know there's not
- 9:34going to be a big team there for a week, maybe some people will
- 9:36be taking vacations for a week or a week and a half.
- 9:38And they're not going to have the full staff of people there.
- 9:42So there's a possibility they're just pushing this through so
- 9:45that they get as much work done before the break as possible.
- 9:49So more than likely I FT3 will slip past past Christmas.
- 9:57Unfortunately for us, you know we probably let's just how about
- 10:04tell me in the comments, do you think it's possible Tell me in
- 10:06the comments because I don't know man.
- 10:08It seems like it it might be possible if they get everything
- 10:11absolutely perfectly done right now, like have to do it right
- 10:15now, like literally they have to start stacking this thing like
- 10:18as soon as possible. But is it possible and did we
- 10:22already see a propellant tanker test?
- 10:29Could this be the article? That could be the propellant
- 10:33tanker test model? The ship 26?
- 10:37They did a static fire on it. Could this be IFT 3?
- 10:42Because they have to get the propellant transfer alike
- 10:45perfectly done. They have to do it perfect in
- 10:49the first few flights event in order for it to function
- 10:53properly. For the future of SpaceX and for
- 10:56Artemis and etcetera. So This is why would they why
- 11:00would they satisfy this if they're not going to use it in
- 11:02the future unless they were doing some new plumbing for the
- 11:07next Raptor engines or something like that.
- 11:08It it's there's a anything is possible anything is possible
- 11:13here. So the IFT 3 flight it's going
- 11:17to transfer propellant in the ship itself.
- 11:21So in there's going to be a tanker to tanker or a tank to
- 11:24tank transfer and ship 26. Possibly going to be a a in
- 11:31orbit propellant transfer vehicle.
- 11:34Or it could have just been a demonstration test to to check
- 11:37out flow or you know any anything's possible with this
- 11:40thing. So could this be IFT 3 possibly
- 11:45too. Could they be flying IFT 3?
- 11:47And then there's some, some set back or there's some.
- 11:50There's some weird stuff with that too, if you think about it,
- 11:52because this doesn't have, doesn't have any wings, it
- 11:59doesn't have any heat shield, it doesn't have anything that the
- 12:02other ships that have already flown have or have been tested,
- 12:05you know, ship 24/7 even had all those things, had the heat
- 12:08shield and the wings and everything.
- 12:10But this has nothing. This is a bare fuselage.
- 12:13It's just a nose cone and a tube, you know, in the internals
- 12:16of course in the engines. But could this be the IFT 3
- 12:20Flame? And I've been thinking about
- 12:22that a little bit because it just has to demonstrate the in
- 12:26orbit propellant transfer. And if they don't really care,
- 12:30like how it functions after that, then why not just send
- 12:35something up that's just has tanks in it, you know?
- 12:39And they get that, they get that job done.
- 12:42It doesn't have to land perfectly.
- 12:45It can burn up. Sorry.
- 12:47You can belly smack her in the off the coast of Kauai like
- 12:50anything else could. And it doesn't need a heath
- 12:54shield. It doesn't really.
- 12:55I mean, does it need wings if it's being propelled through
- 12:58space? Not at that point.
- 13:02But when it comes back in it can't really guide itself as
- 13:06well without the wings. So there's a, there's a slight
- 13:09possibility that this could be some sort of transfer protocol
- 13:14and they just shoot it up there and you know, hope.
- 13:18I mean, they can't really. I mean, they can steer it with
- 13:20the Raptor engines, but not as well with wings, not as well as
- 13:25with wings. So there's a possibility,
- 13:28slight, slight possibility. I'm going to give it a 2%
- 13:30possibility that this thing could be the propellant transfer
- 13:34ship. But let me know what you think
- 13:36in the comments, because I want to.
- 13:37I want to hear some some ideas from some people, because
- 13:42without any way to steer this thing other than the Raptor
- 13:45engines, it might be too dangerous at this point because
- 13:49this is totally a a test article.
- 13:51Like Starship is still a test article, it's still a still a
- 13:55test a test ship. So this might be a little bit
- 13:59too much at this point without the wings of the heat shield or
- 14:03anything like that. Plus they have to demonstrate
- 14:04that all the other things are going to work.
- 14:08So, you know, they have to make sure that everything works and
- 14:11that the propellant tanks don't blow up, you know, And there's
- 14:15only one of these and there's a bunch of other, there's four
- 14:18other ships, you know, that are that are at Starbase right now
- 14:20that are like raring to go until the next Raptor engines are
- 14:25installed on the next ship. So we're going to see, hopefully
- 14:29by, I'm going to guess, February, then they're going to
- 14:32get this thing ready because they're going to work really
- 14:34fast until December 25th and I've been down there during
- 14:38Christmas. It gets dead.
- 14:41There's barely anybody there for about a week, so they're going
- 14:43to lose about a week's worth of time.
- 14:45And you know, just side of the road broadcasting when I was
- 14:50down there, I I barely saw anybody else.
- 14:52The only other people that I really saw there were security
- 14:54guards and Jessica Kirsch and a couple other people would like
- 14:59wander through. But there was never any, like
- 15:03never any like real big presence of Starship facility operators
- 15:08or engineers or anybody working on the ships themselves.
- 15:11So that happened last year too. So if history does repeat
- 15:16itself, there's a possibility that, you know, this, like
- 15:19Starbase basically shuts down for a week and 1/2.
- 15:22So they're going to push hard through December and then the
- 15:26end of December, they're going to take a week to reconfigure,
- 15:29get everybody ready for the new year, and then they're going to
- 15:32push hard to get IFT 3 off the ground.
- 15:35They would really love to get it done by the end of this year
- 15:36though, because they have five flights per year according to
- 15:40their current contract. And if they can get a third one
- 15:44off by the end of the year, they could possibly deter another.
- 15:52They could get three done out of the five and then they restart
- 15:56on January 1st with five more. So, and they can always, if they
- 16:00need it, they can get more. So that might not even be an
- 16:03issue going forward. So it it could be a small thing
- 16:06that they just have to reapply for, you know, and they're
- 16:08probably already in the process of them.
- 16:10So they have to prove this out and then we'll see.
- 16:14That's pretty much it like we're going to see what happens, but I
- 16:17don't see a flight happening by the end of this year.
- 16:19Also, there's one other really cool thing that I wanted to show
- 16:22you, Jared Isaacman. So the Polaris, Dawn mission
- 16:29commander, and this is for the Hubble Space Telescope, and
- 16:34we're all familiar with the Hubble Space Telescope, like, so
- 16:36much cool stuff for the Hubble. NASA was working to resume
- 16:40science operations of the Hubble Space Telescope after it entered
- 16:43safe Mode November 23rd due to an ongoing gyroscope issue.
- 16:46Hubble's instruments are stable and the telescope is in good
- 16:49health, so everything's working properly on Hubble.
- 16:53The gyroscopes went down. So they had to take this thing
- 16:56whole like completely offline because the gyroscopes, this
- 17:01thing is old. You know, Hubble's, Hubble's
- 17:04old, decades old. And then Jared Eisenman says put
- 17:07us in coach. OK, so that's.
- 17:11So if you're not familiar with the Polaris program, Polaris
- 17:13program is using SpaceX technology, Falcon 9 rockets and
- 17:17Crew Dragons to basically go to orbit for regular people to go
- 17:22to orbit. A very, very cool team of people
- 17:24to go to orbit and they're going to be doing some specific
- 17:29demonstrations to show that human spaceflight for regular
- 17:33people and discovery missions and science missions for regular
- 17:38people is possible. So Jared says put us in coach
- 17:43they've been training for Polaris for since they announced
- 17:45it. And they're they're doing
- 17:46flights, they're doing parachuting.
- 17:49They're doing everything that like a, like a NASA astronaut
- 17:52would do. But they're like, I wouldn't say
- 17:55they're normal people. I would say they're exceptional
- 17:57people that are doing exceptional things.
- 18:00But they aren't NASA astronauts. You know, they're, they're not
- 18:04trained by NASA. They didn't have to go through
- 18:06decades of training in the Air Force or the Marines or
- 18:09something like that in order to get to this position.
- 18:13Jared is a pilot. But the other thing is you can
- 18:16go through training and that's where they're that's what
- 18:18they're doing here. They're going through training
- 18:20to do these incredible missions to to do things like this.
- 18:25And there was a couple more comments that were impressive
- 18:27here. Do you think it would be best to
- 18:28repair Hubble or recover or preserve and preserve with
- 18:32Starship? Both can eventually be done,
- 18:34said Jared. Jared.
- 18:37So Hubble repairs, we know that Hubble's been repaired a few
- 18:41times. There are, there's use cases for
- 18:47Hubble, of course. So much science has been done
- 18:49with Hubble. We've discovered so many things
- 18:51and we can continue to discover things.
- 18:53Both can eventually be done now, STSS TS125 said.
- 18:58Problem is, Hubble needs more than just a boost.
- 19:00It needs repairs. How do you expect to do this
- 19:03without the shuttle capabilities?
- 19:05It was hard work then, with the best only vehicle capable of
- 19:08such work. Now, Jared said replacement
- 19:11computers and gyros are not the size of refrigerators anymore.
- 19:16Now STS 125 says. I get that.
- 19:18I'm thinking more about how do you plan to get up to the body
- 19:21of Hubble and do the work with the resources, especially the
- 19:24Canadarm, or without the resources?
- 19:27It's what they wanted to say without the resources,
- 19:30especially the Canadarm, because basically the space shuttle
- 19:32would fly up, open up its hatch, and people would, you know,
- 19:37transfer from the shuttle to the to the to the telescope via the,
- 19:45you know, via the ship. But now Jared said a study has
- 19:49already been done with this. So all good.
- 19:54Like, Jared's like, we can do it.
- 19:57Let's just go like NASA, please just let us go up there.
- 20:00Why aren't you let us letting us go up there?
- 20:02I don't know what the deal is, but why aren't you just letting
- 20:06us do this? And you know, Jared is a
- 20:11exceptional human being. He's done so many wonderful
- 20:13things. And he is a proponent of human
- 20:17spaceflight, continues to work hard to kind of lay the
- 20:21foundation for future spaceflight.
- 20:25For I keep calling them regular people or normal people, but
- 20:29they are exceptional people doing this right now.
- 20:31But eventually, decades down the line, everybody will be able to
- 20:35go to space, which is insane to think about because these are
- 20:40things that we thought about and people have thought about since
- 20:43the dawn of the space age and since the dawn of the Wright
- 20:46Brothers. Like, how can we get to the
- 20:48moon? And they've been thinking about
- 20:50this for hundreds of thousands of years.
- 20:51Like, how do we get up there? This is the foundation, this
- 20:54the, this is the legwork that needed to be done.
- 20:56Jared and his teams will be like basically go down in history is
- 21:00some of the first people to do this other than through a
- 21:03government because governments have deep pockets and they also
- 21:07have the resources to hire people that will get these jobs
- 21:11done. Engineers, scientists, etcetera.
- 21:14They can get these jobs done. Now we have for profit companies
- 21:19like SpaceX and we also have billionaires like Jared who's
- 21:23like, I'm going to do this cool stuff.
- 21:25Can we work together? I got all this money.
- 21:27Like, yeah, sure. I I do like so much wonderful
- 21:31things through Saint Jude and helping people out.
- 21:33But shift for payments, things like that, like his, his
- 21:37company's make bazillions of dollars.
- 21:40Jared is like, I'm a, I'm a, you know, an extreme kind of person.
- 21:46I would like to go to space, please, SpaceX, take my money,
- 21:50You know, the meme. Take my money.
- 21:52And yeah, so it's like, that's what he did to SpaceX.
- 21:55Like I want to do these cool things.
- 21:56How can we do this rationally and get these jobs done?
- 22:00Because I want to. I want to be.
- 22:01I want to be the guy, you know and that's it takes a certain
- 22:05kind of person to do that and Jared is that person.
- 22:07So yeah, I think this is possible.
- 22:10I think it's just really cool. It's just a cool little side
- 22:13thing that we had to talk about today.
- 22:15I thought it was really neat. But there's there's like one
- 22:19other thing that I want to tell you about because I know if you
- 22:22went this far along this rant that I've been going on today.
- 22:28SpaceX has been talking about having like 8 to 10 propellant
- 22:35transfer vehicles on their ship shipped to transfer to to the
- 22:41tanker from the tanker to the ship and NASA just came through
- 22:44with a high teens number Hawkins estimated high teens is driven
- 22:49by concerns over propellant loss known as boil off at the depot.
- 22:52So these depots high teens so with SpaceX and Elon were saying
- 22:57like 8 you know and then they're saying high teens.
- 23:00So it just basically double S it, you know, like OK, high
- 23:03teens, they're going to send eight or they're going to send
- 23:0515 tankers going to boil off because basically the sun is
- 23:09beating down on these things and they're not complete.
- 23:12Like the molecules in the propellant leak out after a
- 23:17while. And it's just like what can you
- 23:19do, right? Like it's just physics, it's
- 23:21just that's how it works. So boil off happens unless
- 23:25SpaceX can launch these ships immediately to, you know, they
- 23:30they might be able to send these like eight tankers up in the
- 23:33same 48 hours. And if that's the case, you
- 23:37know, one or two from the Cape and then one or two from Texas,
- 23:45one or two from the Cape, one or two from tech.
- 23:47You know, back and forth, back and forth, Get 8 to 10 up there
- 23:50and then send the ship up. That's going to be incredible.
- 23:53Is that possible by Artemis 3? Now they're kind of pushing back
- 23:57Artemis 3 to 2027 now, which is, you know it's kind of concerning
- 24:02but also it's spaceflight and the initial the initial time
- 24:07frames for this were ridiculous to begin with.
- 24:09Everybody knew this in the spaceflight industry that the
- 24:11the time frames for this were ridiculous like we're not going
- 24:14to get you know Artemis 3 to to the moon by 2024.
- 24:22You know like it. It just it's it's a ridiculous
- 24:24timeline and the the idea was just put it out there and then
- 24:30of course it's NASA and it's the government So you can kind of
- 24:33push back a little bit and you can get the the time frames that
- 24:36you need. But if the International
- 24:40Astronomical Congress didn't specify a number only mentioned
- 24:43the need for multiple launches Hawkins estimated high teens
- 24:46achieving the Artemis schedule imaging the fuel loss requires
- 24:49rapid successful successive launches.
- 24:51These will occur from Boca Chica Texas and Kennedy Space Center
- 24:54at 39 A on a six day rotation. So boom boom boom, boom.
- 24:59You know that that's it's going to be insane.
