Transcript
- 0:03Good morning. So what would life be like if
- 0:08there was no resurrection? We certainly wouldn't be here
- 0:13today, would we? Worshipping Jesus?
- 0:18We wouldn't know what to do or where to go when our hearts are
- 0:21broken by circumstances in life that we have no control over.
- 0:30And we come to church not for religious purposes or duty.
- 0:37We come as brothers and sisters in Christ because we all know
- 0:42that we need Jesus. Amen.
- 0:44And the older you get and the longer you live, the more you
- 0:48realize that you need Him 24/7, right?
- 0:52This not once in a while, and I'm thankful that we're gathered
- 0:58together here today to to learn more about him and to learn more
- 1:02about the gospel, the good news that the world needs.
- 1:08I don't have to tell you about the news media.
- 1:11There's wars and rumors of war everywhere, whether it's Ukraine
- 1:17or Israel or the potential conflict with China and Taiwan
- 1:26and now Venezuela, Nigeria. It tells us in the Bible in the
- 1:33last days there will be wars and rumors of wars.
- 1:36And boy, we sure have them, don't we?
- 1:38It seems like we have an all time high of world conflict and
- 1:42division and divisiveness and hatred, especially for truth and
- 1:47for the clarity of the gospel. And so we're fortunate, those of
- 1:53us who are here today that believe in Jesus Christ, we have
- 1:57hope and eternal hope, a living hope, a lasting hope and
- 2:01everlasting hope. If you're here today and you've
- 2:04never come to faith in Jesus, I pray today would be the day that
- 2:09you would recognize you need him and you would open your heart to
- 2:13him and invite him to commend your life and change your life
- 2:18and save you from the the power of sin that we all struggle with
- 2:23until we have Jesus. And when you have Jesus, you
- 2:26have a way out of your sinful tendencies.
- 2:28You have a way out of the patterns and habits and
- 2:32addictions that control your life and ruin it.
- 2:37So let's pray, Father God, you've brought each of us here
- 2:41today for a specific purpose. Somehow you work in our minds
- 2:47and in our conscience and call us to yourself.
- 2:51You draw us to yourself, Lord. That's the mystery of the faith.
- 3:00Is it that we don't seek You? You seek us, and then you cause
- 3:04us to seek you. You cause us to pursue you.
- 3:08You cause us, Lord, by your grace, to want to know the
- 3:12answer of life. Why are we here?
- 3:17Why do we go through what we go through?
- 3:20Why do we experience death? Why do we experience heartache?
- 3:24Why do we experience tragedy? Why do we experience broken
- 3:28relationships? Lord, all the things that affect
- 3:31all of us as human beings. And Lord, we are so grateful
- 3:36that you've opened our eyes to realize that you are the Christ,
- 3:42the Son of the living God, that you are the resurrection and the
- 3:47life. And whoever believes in you
- 3:59shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
- 4:04For you said I am the resurrection and the life.
- 4:07He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live,
- 4:12and he that believeth in me shall never die.
- 4:16Oh God, thank you for coming into this world and not leaving
- 4:20us to our sin. You came because you knew we
- 4:26needed a way out of the madness and the insanity and the
- 4:30brokenness of human life apart from you.
- 4:33And we really don't experience life or no life until we come to
- 4:39know you. For you are life.
- 4:42You are the giver of life. There is no life apart from you.
- 4:46We just walk around as dead people until we come to know you
- 4:51and are born again and brought into a relationship with you
- 4:54where we have a new life and a life that's worth living.
- 5:01And we praise you for that, Lord.
- 5:04And as we enter into this new year, Lord, we pray by the power
- 5:07of your Holy Spirit that you would make each of us and this
- 5:11church in this ministry a mouthpiece for the gospel of
- 5:17Jesus Christ into a broken and lost world.
- 5:20That we would go out, each of us this year.
- 5:24And when we meet people and we run into people who are broken
- 5:27hearted and hopeless and despairing, that we would, Lord,
- 5:31be used by you to tell them the good news that Christ died for
- 5:37our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried
- 5:42and that he rose again on the third day.
- 5:46The day. Lord, we study these teachings
- 5:48that you've given us in First Corinthians 15 regarding the
- 5:52gospel. And what a wonderful Sunday that
- 5:54we can all be here together, starting this new year, focusing
- 5:59on the most important thing in life, and that's the gospel of
- 6:03Jesus Christ. So Lord, we commit ourselves to
- 6:07you. We surrender to you.
- 6:09We don't make promises or resolutions.
- 6:11Lord, all you ask us to do is surrender to you and yield to
- 6:17you to say, not our will, but your will be done.
- 6:21And that's I pray the prayer of all of us today.
- 6:25And we commit all these things to Lord the day.
- 6:29Lord, touch the hearts of all those you brought here in the
- 6:32specific and only way that you can to comfort, to encourage, to
- 6:41bring hope, to bring belief, and to bring peace, Father, and to
- 6:49each heart and the families that are represented here this day.
- 6:54Let us be different when we leave here today, more different
- 6:58than we've ever been before because of your word and the
- 7:01power of your Holy Spirit. And we pray and we ask these
- 7:06things in Jesus name, Amen. If you have your Bible turn to
- 7:121st Corinthians chapter 15. You can Google it on your phone
- 7:16as well so you can see where we're at.
- 7:20And we're going to look at the 1st 8 verses today.
- 7:24And I wanted to thank you guys, Lewis, myself, Cindy Terry, the
- 7:30leaders of the church for your prayers, your love for each of
- 7:34us as we serve you. The gifts, the cards, the
- 7:38prayers, the texts, the phone calls are just amazing.
- 7:42As you well know, Cindy, my wife's been really going through
- 7:45it this year. So she was in the hospital for I
- 7:49think about 8 days over Christmas and they're trying to
- 7:53diagnose what's going on. She's having trouble walking and
- 7:56having stability, so it's sort of a challenge every day for her
- 8:00right now, but she's encouraging the Lord.
- 8:03She's trusting Him. She just said to me this morning
- 8:06as we were praying, Clerk, all I want to do is go deeper in
- 8:09Jesus. Isn't that awesome?
- 8:13I'm so thankful that I have a wife that knows Jesus and knows
- 8:16that He's the answer for every need that she has.
- 8:20And I feel the same way. So thank you for your love and
- 8:24your prayers. So anyway, we are in this book
- 8:27of First Corinthians chapter 15. Last time I spoke, prior to
- 8:32Pastor Lewis's time to teach in December, I had finished pretty
- 8:36much with the first part of this chapter regarding what the
- 8:41gospel is. I'm going to read it again and
- 8:43review and then get into a couple things this morning to
- 8:47help us understand more about this history that we have of
- 8:51Jesus raising from the dead. Moreover, brethren, I declare to
- 8:56you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received,
- 9:00and in which you stand, by which you are also saved, if you hold
- 9:04fast that word which I preached to you, unless you believed in
- 9:08vain. For I delivered to you first of
- 9:11all that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins
- 9:16according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He
- 9:21rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and
- 9:25that He was seen by Cephas. Then by the 12.
- 9:29After that He was seen by over 500 brethren at once, of whom
- 9:33the greater part remained to the present, but some have fallen
- 9:36asleep. After that He was seen by James,
- 9:40then by all the apostles, then the last of all, he was seen by
- 9:44me also as by one born out of due time.
- 9:51So the Gospels explain very clearly the history of of what
- 9:58had happened. I'm going to go to Luke chapter
- 10:0024 and I'm going to read a lot of scripture today.
- 10:03This would get you up to speed again in regard to the
- 10:06significance and the historical evidence that this is not make
- 10:11believe. This isn't something that some
- 10:14of this thought up. That would be an interesting
- 10:16story. This is all historical fact
- 10:19proven by the eyewitnesses that actually saw Jesus after his
- 10:23resurrection and Luke chapter 24.
- 10:27Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
- 10:30they and certain other women with them came to the tomb,
- 10:34bringing the spices which they had prepared.
- 10:37But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, and then
- 10:41they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
- 10:45And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this,
- 10:48that behold, 2 men stood by them in shining garments.
- 10:52And then, as they were afraid, they bowed their faces to the
- 10:55earth and said to them, Why do you seek the living among the
- 10:59dead? He is not here, but is risen.
- 11:04Remember how He spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,
- 11:07saying the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of
- 11:11sinful men and be crucified. And the third day rise again.
- 11:15So the Lord told his followers what he was going to encounter
- 11:22and that he was going to be crucified, and then he was going
- 11:26to die and He was going to rise again from the dead on the third
- 11:30day. It's interesting when He did
- 11:32that, they didn't catch on like saying, well, he's he's not
- 11:37going to stay dead. He told us he would rise again.
- 11:40No one picked up on that. Shows you how blind we can be as
- 11:45as human beings. And then they remembered his
- 11:48words. Then they returned from the tomb
- 11:52and told all these things to the 11 and to all the rest.
- 11:56It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and
- 12:00the other women with them who told these things to the
- 12:03apostles. I find it fascinating that the
- 12:06guys weren't at the tomb. Why were the women there?
- 12:10Well, the women have a very important role in the history of
- 12:14Christianity. Jesus decided that he was going
- 12:18to reveal himself first to a woman and then tell her to go
- 12:23tell his closest followers who were all afraid, hiding out,
- 12:27hoping that they wouldn't be arrested or be crucified.
- 12:31And so these wonderful women had this privilege of having this
- 12:35encounter and they got to go tell the apostles.
- 12:39And their words seem to them like idle tales.
- 12:42They did not believe them. So these these women come to the
- 12:46the house and and begin to tell the story of what they had
- 12:49disencountered and and they thought that this seemed like
- 12:53make believe. There's no way that this could
- 12:55happen. But Peter that we remember
- 12:58Peter, Simon Peter had denied Jesus hours before his
- 13:03crucifixion. He probably wasn't in a good
- 13:06state, mentally or emotionally, definitely spiritually, because
- 13:10he knew he had denied the fact that he even knew Jesus.
- 13:15So Peter Rosen ran to the tomb, and stooping down, he saw the
- 13:19linen clothes lying by themselves, and he departed,
- 13:23marvelling to himself at what had happened.
- 13:35I find it fascinating that he ran to the tomb.
- 13:44Something in him caused him to think or to know that something
- 13:50miraculous must have happened. And he sees the garments lying
- 14:00there and thinking like what has gone on here?
- 14:05What has happened? Now down the road there, several
- 14:11of the other apostles are walking.
- 14:13Now behold, 2 of them were traveling that same day to a
- 14:16village called Emmaus, which was 7 miles from Jerusalem.
- 14:21They talked together of all these things which had happened.
- 14:26So it was while they converse and reason that Jesus himself
- 14:30drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained,
- 14:33so they did not know Him, so they weren't able to recognize
- 14:36who was walking along with them. He said to them, What kind of
- 14:41conversation is this that you have with one another as you
- 14:44walk and are sad? Then the one whose name was
- 14:48Cleopas answered and said to him, Are you the only stranger
- 14:51in Jerusalem? And have you not known the
- 14:54things which happened there in these days?
- 14:57And he said to them, What things?
- 15:00And they said to him the things concerning Jesus of Nazareth,
- 15:03whom was a prophet, mighty indeed in Word before God and
- 15:08all the people, and how the chief priest and our rulers
- 15:11delivered him to be condemned to death and crucified him.
- 15:15But we were hoping that it was he who was going to redeem
- 15:18Israel. Indeed, beside all this, today
- 15:21is the third day since these things have happened.
- 15:24Yes, in certain women of our company who had arrived at the
- 15:27tomb early, astonished us when they did not find His body, and
- 15:31they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who
- 15:35said He was alive. And certain of those who were
- 15:39with us went to the tomb, and found that just as a woman had
- 15:42said. But Him they did, we did not
- 15:45see. Then He said to them, O foolish
- 15:48ones and slave heart, to believe in all that the prophets have
- 15:52spoken ought not to Christ to have suffered these things and
- 15:55to enter into His glory. And beginning at Moses and all
- 15:59the prophets, he expanded to them all the scriptures, the
- 16:02things concerning himself. How awesome was that?
- 16:07They're getting like this eyewitness, perfect miraculous
- 16:11account of everything that was prophesized regarding Jesus
- 16:17coming to this earth throughout the Old Testament and that
- 16:21everything that happened, happened according to what the
- 16:24Scriptures had foretold. And he started way back in the
- 16:29time of Moses and he went through all the prophets.
- 16:32We don't have time today to look up all the verses that talk
- 16:35about what happened and how these were all fulfilled 100%.
- 16:39And he and he explained to them all these things.
- 16:44And so they drew near to the village where they were going,
- 16:47and he indicated that he would have gone farther, but they
- 16:50constrained him, saying, abide with us, for it is toward
- 16:53evening and the day is far spent.
- 16:56And he went to stay with them. So he's getting ready to take
- 16:58off. They convince him to stay and
- 17:00hang out for a while. And they were probably
- 17:02wondering, like, how in the world does this guy know all the
- 17:05stuff he's just told us? Now it came to pass as he sat at
- 17:09the table with them, that he took bread and he blessed it and
- 17:14he broke it, and he gave it to them.
- 17:16So every week we take the Lord's Supper and this represents the
- 17:21body that was given for us, the Lord's body and the blood that
- 17:25he was shed for us for the remission of our sins.
- 17:30When Jesus was in the upper room the night before his
- 17:35crucifixion, he had what was called the Last Supper.
- 17:41And when he broke the bread and gave the cup, they had never
- 17:47experienced anything like that ever before because he's telling
- 17:55them that this represents him, his body.
- 18:02So that was the last thing they remembered before his
- 18:05crucifixion. And so here's Jesus now sitting
- 18:10with them at the table with them.
- 18:14He takes the bread, He blesses it, He broke it and gave it to
- 18:18them. There's no one that can break
- 18:20bread like Jesus, right? It's it's a supernatural
- 18:27encounter. And whenever he did that, it
- 18:33says their eyes were open and they knew him and he vanished
- 18:37from their sight right away. They said this is the Messiah,
- 18:42this is Jesus. We've seen him.
- 18:45He truly has risen from the dead.
- 18:48And they said to one another, did not our heartburn within us
- 18:51while we talked with us on the road and while we opened the
- 18:55Scriptures to us. And that's what happens to me
- 18:58and to you every time we open the Word of God, whether it's 5
- 19:01minutes or five hours, it doesn't matter.
- 19:04You read the Word of God. It's a living word and it goes
- 19:07into your heart and to your spirit.
- 19:10The Holy Spirit takes what it is you're reading and begins to
- 19:13burn things in your heart and make them real and make them
- 19:17alive and make them living. And they they said the evidence
- 19:24of this experience was that whenever this word was
- 19:28proclaimed to them, something was happening internally in
- 19:32their heart. And that's what my prayer is
- 19:36every time we come here together and gather whoever is preaching,
- 19:40whoever is teaching the studies throughout the week, the women's
- 19:45studies, the men's studies, a small group studies of the
- 19:48pastor teachings, the Wednesday night guys.
- 19:52Every time the word's broken, something's happening in the
- 19:56heart. And that's why you want to take
- 19:59advantage every time the church is open.
- 20:02And when the word is being broken, come and fellowship and
- 20:06allow the Lord to work in your heart through the word of God.
- 20:10And so they. Are amazed at what has happened
- 20:15so they rose up that very hour they returned to Jerusalem and
- 20:18found the 11 and of course we know Judas had committed suicide
- 20:23so he wasn't there yet anymore and the apostle left at this
- 20:28time who were with them gathered together saying the Lord has
- 20:31risen indeed and has appeared to Simon exclamation point and they
- 20:37told about the things that had happened on the road and how he
- 20:40was known to them by the breaking of bread.
- 20:44It's interesting how the Lord encourages us to take the Lord's
- 20:49Supper as frequently as we possibly can, because every time
- 20:54we take the Supper, Jesus says we remember his death till he
- 21:00comes again. Something happens to us
- 21:02supernaturally when we take the Lord's Supper.
- 21:04It's not a ritual, it's not a routine.
- 21:07It's something that glorifies God beyond what our imaginations
- 21:11could even consider, that He loves us to remember what He's
- 21:16done for us because it's easy for us to forget it.
- 21:19It's easy for us to take it lightly.
- 21:23And every time we have the privilege to break the bread
- 21:26together with Him and with one another, he does something
- 21:29supernaturally in US. And now in verse 36, as they
- 21:34said these things, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them and
- 21:38said to them, Peace to you. These are these are some of the
- 21:41occurrences of the eyewitness accounts after Christ rose from
- 21:44the dead. And they were terrified and
- 21:47frightened and supposed they had seen a spirit.
- 21:49He said to them, Why are you troubled?
- 21:51And why do you doubt? Why do these doubts arise in
- 21:54your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet that
- 21:58it is I myself handle me and see.
- 22:03For the Spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I
- 22:06have. So he had this resurrected
- 22:09physical, actual body, flesh and and bone, but but a body that
- 22:17was now never going to die again, never suffer again.
- 22:25So he gave them the opportunity to touch him.
- 22:27And it would have been great to have been in that room to see
- 22:30that. I don't know what you would have
- 22:31been. I've probably been like, he's
- 22:38really here. This is not a ghost.
- 22:40This is a real person. And then everybody else, I'm
- 22:47sure we're gathering around hugging them and who knows what
- 22:50they were up to. And when he had said this, he
- 22:56showed them his hands and his feet.
- 22:59And while they still did not believe for joy and marvel, he
- 23:02said to them, have you any food here?
- 23:05Now when he shows them the hands and the feet, the, the, the nail
- 23:09pier scars are still there and they'll be there throughout all
- 23:13eternity. When we're in heaven one day,
- 23:15we're always going to remember when we're with Jesus for what
- 23:19he did for us and why we're actually able to be there with
- 23:22him because of what he did for us.
- 23:26And we know Thomas, who wasn't at that particular meeting, he
- 23:30shows up down the road later. He actually, you know, didn't
- 23:36believe until we was able to put his hand into the Neil Pierce
- 23:40scars and then he recognized that it was the Lord himself.
- 23:46But Jesus knows that they're still like, and their rational
- 23:50minds thinking like, OK, I'm, I'm experiencing this.
- 23:55I'm seeing this, I believe now and I but how I need a little
- 24:00bit more help to really think that this is really real, right?
- 24:04So then Jesus says, do you have any food here?
- 24:06The Lord didn't need anything to eat, but he wanted to prove to
- 24:09him that he still liked to eat. And that's sort of interesting
- 24:12because when we get to heaven, we're just not sitting around in
- 24:15clouds, you know, kumbaya worshiping all the time.
- 24:18Our worships going to be involved in every activity that
- 24:21we experience in heaven and there's going to be food in
- 24:24heaven. What do you think about that?
- 24:25Are you excited about that? No, no food poisoning.
- 24:30I guarantee the the best fillets that are probably ever possible
- 24:34be able to be put out there on a table.
- 24:36This a marriage supper to the lamb that we're all going to
- 24:39experience in that that first opportunity to be with him in
- 24:43the Kingdom. This wonderful, wonderful days
- 24:46ahead for us and those the Lord. So they gave him a piece of
- 24:50broiled fish and some honeycomb and he took it and he ate it in
- 24:53their presence. Then he said to them, These are
- 24:57the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that
- 25:01all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of
- 25:04Moses and the prophets, and the Psalms concerning me.
- 25:08And he opened their understanding, that they might
- 25:10have comprehend the Scriptures. And he said to them, Thus it is
- 25:14written. And thus it was necessary for
- 25:16Christ's suffering to rise from the dead the third day.
- 25:21Now this is what I want us all to capture and think about, and
- 25:28that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His
- 25:32name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
- 25:37The last thing He said to them also said it in Matthew.
- 25:42He says it to us today. What needs to be done is that we
- 25:47need to tell people they need to repent from their sins and that
- 25:52Jesus will forgive them and cleanse them from their sins and
- 25:59give them everlasting life. This should be preached in His
- 26:06name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
- 26:10So our job as followers of Jesus Christ in studying about the
- 26:15resurrection is to take this message that God has given to
- 26:20you and me and give it to everyone we possibly can.
- 26:24Amen. Looking for opportunities to
- 26:27tell people that don't know anything about what it is.
- 26:30We know that don't even think there's a possibility of
- 26:35forgiveness from guilt and shame and sin and we've all committed.
- 26:42The people for the most part are hopeless and they don't realize
- 26:47that there is the potential to have life after death.
- 26:54It's good news. I remember someone saying years
- 26:58ago, and if you've lost people to cancer or you've had cancer
- 27:01yourself and it's a wicked, wicked disease, if you had a
- 27:07literal cure for cancer, you would not hide that cure and
- 27:15that answer for that disease. You would be breaking down every
- 27:18hospital door in room where a patient was suffering from
- 27:23cancer and say, I got good news for you.
- 27:27I'm going to tell you something and if you believe it, you're
- 27:31not going to have cancer anymore.
- 27:33You would tell everybody, well, we have a message that's greater
- 27:38than the cure for cancer. We have the message, the cure
- 27:42for death, that people can have life everlasting and forgiveness
- 27:48of their sin. And so Jesus, he went through
- 27:51all this, not only for you and me, but he went through this for
- 27:56everybody that would come to live after you and me, so that
- 28:00they would hear this perpetually from one generation to the next
- 28:04generation until he comes again and he says, and you are
- 28:11witnesses of these things. Now these people were
- 28:13eyewitnesses. They were standing there, they
- 28:15were experiencing his literal physical body.
- 28:18They heard his voice, they saw his presence.
- 28:21Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you.
- 28:25And this is the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 28:30But Terry, in the city of Jerusalem until you were endued
- 28:33with power from on high. So they had to wait till they
- 28:37had the Holy Spirit's power to have the boldness and the
- 28:40courage to tell people about what Jesus had done for them,
- 28:45because they knew that they were potentially going to be martyred
- 28:48and killed because of following Jesus.
- 28:52And this is one of the greatest endorsements of the reality of
- 28:55the history of the resurrection. There's no way people would give
- 29:00their lives to potentially die and be martyred for something
- 29:04that was not true. These men and these women
- 29:08throughout the histories of life and martyrdom said this is worth
- 29:15dying for. This is worth giving my life
- 29:19for. We received the Holy Spirit when
- 29:27we were born again. When we receive Jesus into our
- 29:30heart as our Lord and Savior, we're not alone anymore.
- 29:33God lives within us and so when we hear the word of God, if
- 29:38we're believers, it resonates is the truth.
- 29:41We don't doubt anymore. We know it's true because he
- 29:45lives within us. What propels us to do what it is
- 29:50we do for God in Our Calling and our giftings is made possible by
- 29:59the Holy Spirit that lives in each of us.
- 30:01So you and me and, and, and everyone else that believes in
- 30:05the Lord, we're out in the marketplace, we're out in the
- 30:08world, we're out in the culture, we're out in our jobs, our
- 30:13occupations and our families and our sports activities, our
- 30:16leisure. And there's always an
- 30:19opportunity to run into someone that knows nothing about what we
- 30:22know. And the Holy Spirit convicts you
- 30:26and you think, how can I get a conversation going with this
- 30:29person I'm starting to enjoy being with?
- 30:32To tell them more about my life and how many kids I have, or
- 30:37where do I live, or what kind of job I have, or what kind of car
- 30:40I drive or where do I like to go on vacation, All that kind of
- 30:43stuff. Small talk, weather, politics,
- 30:46whatever. To find a way that I can tell
- 30:50them about what Jesus has done for me.
- 30:55Get that conversation going. And then hearing them either
- 30:59blowing you off and ignoring you or laughing at you, which
- 31:02happens sometimes, or someone saying, that's interesting, I'd
- 31:06like to know more about that. And they ask you questions and
- 31:10you build a friendship, you build a relationship.
- 31:13And, and because of those conversations, God uses you to
- 31:18to see people LED into the Kingdom of God to believe in
- 31:21Jesus Christ and become saved and on their way to heaven.
- 31:27And he led them up out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his
- 31:31hands, and he blessed them. This is the last thing they
- 31:34remember seeing. Now it came to pass while he
- 31:37blessed them, that he was parted from them and carried up into
- 31:40heaven. So they saw the ascension occur.
- 31:44And this also is discussed in the book of the Acts.
- 31:48It said, Madam, brethren, why are you looking up?
- 31:52Remember that the same Jesus is being taken up from you shall
- 31:57come again in like manner. So physically I saw him come up
- 32:03and the Bible says the second coming of Jesus physically, eyes
- 32:09will see him come back to this earth, establish his Kingdom in
- 32:13Jerusalem for 1000 years, the millennial Kingdom and they
- 32:18worshipped him and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
- 32:23And we're continually in the temple praising and blessing
- 32:27God, I should say. So this was a real revival.
- 32:30This wasn't something like the Steelers will win the day and
- 32:35then we'll rejoice and we'll be excited and and then two hours
- 32:38later, we could care less, right?
- 32:42This is an event that you can't ever get out of your head.
- 32:47And and it says that they they return to Jerusalem with with
- 32:50this great joy. And I think we say happy New
- 32:53Year, right? I think we should say joyous New
- 32:56Year because happiness is based upon circumstances.
- 33:00And is everybody happy? Yeah.
- 33:01Sometimes you're happy, sometimes you're sad, sometimes
- 33:04you're mad, sometimes you're glad.
- 33:06But joy is a fruit of the spirit.
- 33:08When the joy of of the Lord is in US, they can't be drained.
- 33:12It's it's eternal, it's supernatural, it's something you
- 33:16can draw from no matter what you're going through and what
- 33:19you're dealing with in life. The joy of the Lord is our
- 33:22strength and we see that in the lives of each other.
- 33:29When we suffer, we're not excited about suffering and
- 33:33tragedy and difficulty and heartache.
- 33:36But when Jesus is in the midst of your suffering, there's this
- 33:41presence of joy, isn't there? It's and it's not something we
- 33:46can manufacture or try to make happen.
- 33:49It's something that's supernaturally is given to you
- 33:52and me as a gift. It's a fruit of the Spirit, the
- 33:56love, the joy, the peace, the long-suffering, the gentleness,
- 34:00the goodness, the meekness. All the attributes of Jesus are
- 34:03in us because Christ is in US, Christ in you the hope of glory.
- 34:13And so whenever we we watch that little video clip there of of
- 34:21Jesus showing up at at Lazarus death.
- 34:26It's it's interesting because Lazarus is about his figure
- 34:30about 30 years old when that happened and Jesus, he knew all
- 34:37about it ahead of time and he didn't show up immediately
- 34:41because there was a reason for what had happened and why it
- 34:46happened the way it happened. But Lazarus was supernaturally
- 34:51resurrected from a terminally dead condition.
- 34:54Of course, it wasn't the final resurrection because even though
- 35:00he was healed and brought back to life, he eventually died,
- 35:03right. But but Jesus resurrection was
- 35:06the fact that he can never die again and never will die again.
- 35:11And so whenever we're resurrected, we're never going
- 35:13to die again. And so this this issue of what
- 35:27happened with Lazarus was the fact that it was a precursor of
- 35:35about 6 days before Jesus would actually be raised from the dead
- 35:39himself. And they wanted to eliminate
- 35:44him, the enemies, because of what he had done for Lazarus.
- 35:49Because a lot of people there were skeptics up until that time
- 35:52regarding Jesus and his message of repentance and remission of
- 35:56sins became believers because what had happened to Lazarus.
- 36:01So they saw Jesus as being a great threat to the rest of the
- 36:06nation of Israel, and they wanted to eliminate him and get
- 36:10get rid of him. And so Mary and Martha and
- 36:18Lazarus lived in Bethany and Jesus throughout his lifetime
- 36:23had developed a friendship with them.
- 36:26So on his way to celebrate Passover, he would stay at their
- 36:29house. So they were really, really
- 36:30close friends and Jesus hung out there a lot with them.
- 36:37And whenever Martha first came and said, Lord, if you would
- 36:44have been here in time, he wouldn't have died.
- 36:48He saw the anguish in her, the heartache, the desolation, the
- 36:54confusion. Because Jesus is a man of
- 36:59sorrows and acquainted with grief.
- 37:02There's not one thing you and I go through that we go through
- 37:07alone as his kids. He suffers with you when you're
- 37:12suffering. He, he enters into your life and
- 37:20the times that you're broken and your your heart is blown apart.
- 37:25He's there to bring comfort. He's there to bring courage.
- 37:28He's there to bring strength. He's there to bring hope and
- 37:34reason and peace. And the longer you walk with the
- 37:39Lord and the more you begin to know Him and the older you get
- 37:44in your relationship to Him, He never doesn't show up and
- 37:53minister to you. Now at first when you're going
- 37:57through whatever it is, you, you, you want a miracle right
- 37:59away. You want help now, not like 10
- 38:02minutes from now or two days from now.
- 38:04Lord, I need you right now. And he's there.
- 38:07We just don't sense it sometimes He, he lets us like get
- 38:11desperate to really push into him and the struggle to really
- 38:14find him. He says if you seek me with all
- 38:18your heart, you'll find me. If you seek the Lord with just a
- 38:23superficial heart, He's still there, but He's not going to
- 38:26show up the way you want him to. But when you're desperate for
- 38:29Him and you're crying out to Him and He knows you're at the point
- 38:33of ready to receive and experience Him, He will show up
- 38:38in a very powerful way. So even though Jesus knew he was
- 38:43going to raise Lazarus from the dead, when Martha shared her
- 38:50brokenness to him, you know what it says in the Bible?
- 38:53Jesus wept. Why would He weep?
- 39:00He knows the end from the beginning.
- 39:03Beginning from the end. He weeps for us because He knows
- 39:11we don't understand at times. Why, Lord, why?
- 39:19And our hearts are broken, but he puts the heart back together
- 39:25again. And I find through crisis and
- 39:28adversity and suffering and tragedy, it's a paradox because
- 39:34it's the best thing that can happen to a human being because
- 39:38it causes them to look for God and then perhaps even maybe
- 39:44believe in God because of what they've gone through or what
- 39:47they're going through. He's a master physician.
- 39:51He knows how to touch the heart. He knows how to pull out the,
- 39:54the stuff that needs to be exposed and to, to be repented
- 39:58of and to, to be seen as as ugly as it is.
- 40:01And why he had to die that violent death on the cross for
- 40:04the sins that we've committed against him, past, present and
- 40:08future. The the lack of.
- 40:16Compassion that we have for this great God at times is that's
- 40:21what I marvel about. I say, Lord, how can you love me
- 40:25so much when I've loved you so little?
- 40:31But His love for me and you is not predicated or conditioned
- 40:38upon a temperature of what He thinks or sees and how we love
- 40:43Him. It says He loved us, and while
- 40:47we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, our worst place in life
- 40:54and time. He died for us because He loves
- 40:58us. So when we look at this section
- 41:06in First Corinthians 15, I pray, and this is a long chapter,
- 41:12we're going to get into a lot of interesting teachings regarding
- 41:15what happens to the body after death and the type of the
- 41:19resurrection that occurs. For the resurrection from the
- 41:23dead, for those resurrection of righteousness believers and the
- 41:29resurrection of condemnation and guilt for those who are
- 41:32unbelievers who unfortunately will suffer all eternity and
- 41:37hell because they refused to believe on Jesus and accept Him
- 41:42as their Savior. All these people that were
- 41:49exposed to this experience, Peter Cephas, that's another
- 41:53name for Simon Peter. Then they called him the 12,
- 41:56even though there was only 11 left.
- 41:58They were known as the 12 apostles, the 500 people that
- 42:03saw him at one time, then James Peters or Jesus brother, half
- 42:13brother that the whole life of growing up as a kid in the
- 42:17house, as I mentioned last time, all these other brothers were
- 42:21always getting in trouble. I'm sure getting spanked.
- 42:23Jesus never got spanked once and they would call him goody 2
- 42:29sandals. Jesus never does anything wrong.
- 42:32You love him more than you love me because he never he's
- 42:35perfect. They didn't even know what they
- 42:37were saying. Surely he was perfect and is
- 42:41perfect without sin. And then Paul, we'll get into
- 42:49that next week. He says last of all, he was seen
- 42:52by me also as by one born out of due time.
- 42:59And how Paul got saved is a miracle in and of itself.
- 43:03Martyring Christians, putting them in prison, having them
- 43:07killed because they followed Jesus and the and the humor of
- 43:12Jesus. Guess who I'm going to pick to
- 43:14be one of the leaders of my, my New Testament church?
- 43:19Paul Tarsus, You got to be kidding me.
- 43:22This guy was a murderer. You can't trust him.
- 43:24We hate you know no way but God chooses a weak and foolish
- 43:29things of this world to confound the wise that no flesh your
- 43:33gloriness present. I am the last person and I Lewis
- 43:37will say the same to be doing what we're doing.
- 43:39You got to God. You got to have a good sense of
- 43:41humor to you would call us out of our sinful lifestyles and our
- 43:45self centeredness and our pride and our greed and all these
- 43:49weaknesses of our human feralities and feelings.
- 43:54And you, you choose to speak through us.
- 43:58He could speak through a donkey, right?
- 44:03He can speak through an ass, right?
- 44:08So it's humbling. So as a worship team can come
- 44:12forward, 11:45 I stop at 11:45. Lewis stops at 1155 S.
- 44:24Do you like me better than Louis because I quit sooner.
- 44:30No, I used to like preach for an hour and a half.
- 44:32I was telling Louis and finally I realized like people checked
- 44:35out like a long time ago. So we only have so much
- 44:40bandwidth. But anyway, it's a privilege to
- 44:43be able to teach this to you today, and I pray that the Lord
- 44:47will touch your heart and bring healing to where it needs to be
- 44:51healing. I know some of our family in
- 44:53this church has lost loved ones this year.
- 44:56Some are dealing with serious illnesses.
- 44:59Some are dealing with wayward family or broken kids, marriages
- 45:04that have been in disarray, whatever.
- 45:06But we're also grateful for all the answers to prayer that we've
- 45:10had at Calvary Chapel this year, all the wonderful things that
- 45:14God has done in your lives and the lives of many that we care
- 45:17about and love. So keep praying, keep trusting
- 45:20the Lord, keep asking questions, and we're here for you to help
- 45:25you in your path and your walk as you help us as well.
- 45:30Let's take the Lord's Supper together.
