- 0:01Amen. You can do a lot with technology
- 0:04today, can't you? You know, this time of the year,
- 0:07people like to put, they don't have a real fireplace, they like
- 0:11to put one on their TV, right? They projected on their TV and
- 0:15some of that stuff is so realistic and it adds a little
- 0:19bit, I've not missed your into the house, but if you have a
- 0:24real fireplace where you've been before real fireplace, it
- 0:26doesn't compare because what a real fireplace offers This is
- 0:31something that a 4K. I don't even know what the
- 0:34update is with the latest screens these days kind of
- 0:38fireplace that you project on your screen can bring and that
- 0:42is warmth. And someone used as a wonderful
- 0:45illustration of the Gathering of the Saints.
- 0:48No matter what kind of services we offer, no matter how bless
- 0:51you may be from watching the services online.
- 0:54You don't know the warmth until you get there and be with the
- 0:58people and be in the presence of God's people who have the Holy
- 1:02Spirit living inside of them. So I am blessed to be with you
- 1:05here on a Friday night as always.
- 1:07And we are in second Samuel chapter 10 together in our
- 1:11study. Second Samuel chapter 10 and as
- 1:15you're turning there, I'm going to ask a simple question for
- 1:18those who were here last week and the question is what was the
- 1:22dominant theme that permeated the previous chapter?
- 1:29Anybody remember? Mercy.
- 1:32In other words, for Mercy, the kindness of God, the kindness of
- 1:38God, and the kindness of God was on display through King David,
- 1:43who extended really remarkable level of kindness to an
- 1:49undeserving house. The house of Saul and that was
- 1:52such a countercultural thing to do for any King, a newly
- 1:56established King, who would deal ruthlessly with the family of
- 2:00their predecessor. Lest there be any future threats
- 2:04or Rebellion, or take over. He would annihilate those that
- 2:09belong to the preceding Kingdom and Dynasty, but David did the
- 2:13opposite, he embraced the grandson of saw.
- 2:17He brought him close and such an act of Mercy was so filled with
- 2:21Purity and compassion that it reminded us of what The love of
- 2:26Christ for Humanity, the love of Jesus poured out for all of us.
- 2:31And if we thought that David's campaign for kindness ended with
- 2:35mephibosheth were wrong because his kindness is only going to
- 2:38overflow into this chapter, it's going to spill into the verses
- 2:42of this chapter that is before us tonight.
- 2:45And what's interesting about this is David here.
- 2:52Is seemingly on a conquest and the conquest is not for more
- 2:56land. It's for more Hearts.
- 2:58He just seems to be on this ambition, to really extend,
- 3:03benevolence and care, and love, and mercy.
- 3:09And I think that's telling we're going to read the first few
- 3:11verses in a moment here. But let me remind you that
- 3:13friendliness that a considerate spirit being generous, being
- 3:19thoughtful, is something that every believer should have
- 3:24flowing out of them to everyone around them.
- 3:27Kindness is not an optional attitude, it's not like there's
- 3:30some people who are more prone to that kind of disposition and
- 3:33we can excuse ourselves, because kindness is a personality trait.
- 3:36Do you remember who David was? He was a warrior.
- 3:39He was a man who went to through many battles.
- 3:42There was much Bloodshed. He was, he was just a military
- 3:45machine and yet he can sit on top of his success and his heart
- 3:50be stirred to extend practical, kindness to those who are
- 3:55undeserving of it. How much more us who are in
- 3:58dwelt with the Holy Spirit, how much more us?
- 4:02And so I think that's important to understand because when we
- 4:04come to chapter 9 and chapter 10, well, we are going to see is
- 4:09practical illustrations of Christ, like kindness.
- 4:11In fact, look at verse 1 and 2 quickly at verse of chapter 10.
- 4:16After this, the king of the ammonites died and hanoun his
- 4:20son, reigned in his place. And David said, I will deal
- 4:24loyally with hanoun the son of Maharaja as his father doubt.
- 4:28Loyally with me, who here doesn't have the ESV Instead of
- 4:33loyally, what your word is used. Kindness right, we'll get to the
- 4:39reason why the ESV I believe the svu's loyally but does the first
- 4:43two verses of chapter 10 remind you of a recent study hint, just
- 4:48last Friday. What was chapter 9?
- 4:52How do the first verse of chapter 9 read?
- 4:55David wanting to and he expressed his desire to show
- 4:59kindness to the house of Saul. So, we see in the first verse of
- 5:04chapter 9, David wants to extend kindness to mephibosheth.
- 5:07Now, we see in the first two verses of chapter 10 that he
- 5:10wants to do the same, but for somebody completely different,
- 5:13somebody wasn't even a Jew. Who isn't even belonging to the
- 5:16line of Abraham? Somebody was a gentile and so we
- 5:19see this theme of kindness continuing but what?
- 5:22I, so appreciate beyond the truths of practical kindness
- 5:26that we're going to pick up along the way is the reality of
- 5:30kindness. Meaning what?
- 5:32Though, the chapters begin the same way.
- 5:34They play it much differently, they do.
- 5:38In the case of chapter 9, there was a bond created.
- 5:41In the case of chapter 10 award is going to be caused.
- 5:45And I believe the Holy Spirit placed these texts together for
- 5:48many reasons. And one of those reasons is to
- 5:51inform the child of God that it is greatly possible that you
- 5:57will not receive reciprocal kindness or favor though.
- 6:01You are extending an attribute of Jesus to others.
- 6:07In other words you will inherit evil for good and if you haven't
- 6:11yet this Bible study is going to prepare you if you have already
- 6:16in your service to the Lord. In your ministry, in your
- 6:20family, in your marriage, in your friendships, this Bible
- 6:23study is going to encourage you. It's going to encourage you
- 6:27because you're going to see that.
- 6:28This is something that happens to the greatest men of God.
- 6:32And these neighboring chapters as I just said are going to read
- 6:34differently and if we have our gospel lenses in our hands and
- 6:38from time to time, we put them on as we read these verses,
- 6:41we're going to see another thing.
- 6:42Something that we saw in chapter 9, we're going to view it in the
- 6:44lens of the kindness of God with the gospel.
- 6:49And in the same way that you and I will experience different
- 6:51reactions to our love and service to people Christ
- 6:55experience, it all the time. And some cases like mephibosheth
- 7:00on. I hope you responded like him.
- 7:02People will bow and humbleness Before, the Throne of God and
- 7:06just alarmed at the reality that he is willing to be a friend to
- 7:09an enemy and there will be others.
- 7:12Unfortunately a majority who respond to the gospel like
- 7:15hanoun which is what to scornfully reject the kindness
- 7:20of the king and is more willing to go to war with him than to
- 7:24submit to him. And so, are you ready?
- 7:27I was studying this and I thought Yes, we'll be able to do
- 7:29what we did with chapter 9 and complete.
- 7:31All of it in one study and no it's not going to happen.
- 7:34And what we're going to do is just look at the first five
- 7:36verses. We're going to do what we
- 7:38usually do. And that is what thank you for
- 7:39that. We're going to do this.
- 7:41I'm going to read it. If you haven't been here before,
- 7:43you're going to not going to doze off, you're not going to
- 7:45check your Instagram, right? Amen.
- 7:47You're going to look at the verses and you're going to see
- 7:50what stands out to you because we want to train you on how to
- 7:54read your Bible effectively. Not just to say you checked off
- 7:58my lights, you want to leave with something in your morning,
- 8:01devotions, or your night devotions to chew on and digest
- 8:05and get into your soul. So weary from verse 1 and
- 8:09reading from the ESV, so one word will read differently.
- 8:11There will be different verbiage but that's okay.
- 8:15The thought is still the same verse 1 down to verse 5, are you
- 8:18with me? Amen.
- 8:20You're with me after this, the king of the ammonites died.
- 8:27And how known his son reigned in his place, and David said, I
- 8:33will deal loyally or kindly with hanoun the son of nahor Josh as
- 8:38his father, dealt loyally with me.
- 8:41So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his
- 8:46father, and David servants came into the land of the ammonites,
- 8:52but the princes of the ammonites said to hanoun their lord.
- 8:57Do you think because David has sent comforters to you, that he
- 9:01is honoring. Your father has not David sent
- 9:06his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and
- 9:1020. Overthrow it so hanoun took
- 9:13David's servants and shaved half, shaved off, half the beard
- 9:18of each and cut off their garments in the middle at their
- 9:21hips and sent them away when it was told David.
- 9:24He sent to meet them for the men, were greatly ashamed and
- 9:29the King said, remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and
- 9:34then return. Interesting piece of holy writ,
- 9:41more valuable than a historical analysis of one of the most
- 9:45successful dynasties in Israel's history.
- 9:48What do you see? What do you see?
- 9:50Yes, Joshua. Yeah, so the NIV is a little bit
- 10:04more explicit rights. Yes, very good observation and I
- 10:10think that's important. You know why?
- 10:11Because it's more embarrassing than to see, and to read it as
- 10:14at the hip, there's something exposed, and it's very, very
- 10:19shameful, especially in this culture.
- 10:23Any other observations, we can be thankful to the NIV for that.
- 10:30Very good. So he initiated it right?
- 10:32Just like chapter 9, David initiated this campaign of
- 10:36kindness. There's a foreshadowing here
- 10:41again at Jesus. We're going to see Christ in
- 10:43these verses as well as we did in chapter nine.
- 10:45Any other observations So the princes The Advisory
- 10:58Board of the king of the ammonites were the ones who
- 11:02showed deception or Miss judgment in the heart of the
- 11:06king and it caused trouble. Yes.
- 11:23Yeah, so we're going to look at why he asked them to do this.
- 11:25So that's a good observation, you know.
- 11:26They remain at Jericho and I think there's something there
- 11:29for us to understand. Yes, you had something too.
- 11:52Yeah, so there is going to be a war, that's going to come from
- 11:54this but it's not going to be instigated by David.
- 11:58It's going to be it's going to be it's going to be aroused by
- 12:00the ammonites and David. Look at his tenderness, he wants
- 12:03to ensure that the honor of his men is restored.
- 12:08I mean there's something there. So profound and Powerful.
- 12:10Even in our relationship with Christ will get to that to the
- 12:12concluding moments of our study. Great observations.
- 12:15Yes. The other gentiles.
- 12:32It is different here. It's going beyond the borders,
- 12:35beyond the expectation of what we would think is required of
- 12:39our kindness. Yes.
- 13:11Sure. Yeah.
- 13:25That's very good point. I mean, look, can you blame this
- 13:28this group right? The ammonites.
- 13:30You have these foreign entities, you have these ambassadors
- 13:32coming into your world and they are not necessarily allies and
- 13:36so is their suspicions legitimate?
- 13:39And we can say, yes it is legitimate but there is there's
- 13:42a fine line between being Discerning and being cruel.
- 13:47Right? And so I think you made the
- 13:49right observation, a good observation, at least to say
- 13:52they took it too far though, the idea of contemplating whether
- 13:57this is Friend or Foe, is is understandable, anything else?
- 14:03Yes Kinga. Yeah, so there is so again you
- 14:41kind of just just emphasizing on what he's saying, elaborating
- 14:45more in that this this kindness that's coming from the nation of
- 14:49Israel. Not only are they formed but
- 14:51their act of grace and mercy and consideration is also foreign.
- 14:55So the only conclusion, the only equation of the mines is they
- 14:58have to be spies, why would they do such a thing?
- 15:01And I think, again, there's debate about whether or not
- 15:03these men are intentionally being malicious or if they are.
- 15:06They're trying to be wise. Advisors to the king.
- 15:11Great, maybe a couple more and then we'll continue for the sake
- 15:14of time. Yes, Liza,
- 15:28Yes. When he met his own men after
- 15:30they were humiliated again, the kindness of David is just
- 15:33overflowing in so many different ways.
- 15:34Absolutely, wonderful. Maybe one more and then we can
- 15:37continue to have one last observation before we unpack.
- 15:40These verses There's two so we'll do to Barrett.
- 15:46And then Brian, go ahead. Bear it.
- 15:54Yeah. Sure.
- 16:07Yeah, it's played on much more aggression than we would think.
- 16:11And it didn't sit them down nicely and put some kind of
- 16:13protection around their neck. So the hair doesn't fall in
- 16:14their garments, didn't give them a trim.
- 16:16And if you think it was halfway this way, where they brought
- 16:20their beards, a little shorter than what it was, that's not how
- 16:22it happened. It would be like, shaving, the
- 16:24right side of my face while leaving the left side,
- 16:27untouched. That's just embarrassing in any
- 16:30culture, right? But it's even more embarrassing
- 16:33and humiliating for a Jew and we'll find out why Yes, Brian.
- 16:38And then we're going to move on sorry guys.
- 16:51Yeah, that's there's something. There's something there.
- 16:55These advisors seem awfully familiar.
- 16:58Awfully familiar, don't they? And we'll get to that.
- 17:00Why? I'm, you know what I said, well,
- 17:02can do, but there's two more will do two more, and then I got
- 17:03to stop. I'm sorry.
- 17:05And you go ahead and then we do have a hand up as well.
- 17:07No, you didn't. Do you want to say something?
- 17:08Anyway, I'm joking. Go ahead.
- 17:24That's a great observation. In other words, can we say the
- 17:28observation was when it came to Nepal and him being insulted by
- 17:31Nepal? And first Samuel, 25, there was
- 17:33a quick reaction from David. Now we come and many years has
- 17:36passed. Since then chapter 10 of second
- 17:38Samuel, and you have a much more calm and resolve David, I wonder
- 17:42if he's matured Interesting thought, wonderful can we pray
- 17:46together before we unpack these verses?
- 17:48Well, we thank you for this Bible study.
- 17:50We thank you for this room that love your word.
- 17:53The people here. Who desire you, who say, I want
- 17:55to spend my Friday night under God's word.
- 17:58Now, Lord may we be blessed as we Feast with the scriptures in
- 18:03Jesus name we pray. Amen.
- 18:06After this verse 1, the king of the ammonites died in High Noon,
- 18:09his son reigned in his place and David said, I will deal oily
- 18:12with hanoun the son of Maharaja as his father, dealt loyalty
- 18:15with me. ESV says, loyally and it's an
- 18:18interesting choice of words because you heard that different
- 18:21translations that are faithful to the original text.
- 18:23Use the word kindness, It's because the original word is the
- 18:27word, kindness, the same word that we saw in the previous
- 18:30chapter numerous times and I believe the reason why the ESV
- 18:33chose the word loyally. Is because in the Old Testament
- 18:37and many context, the word kindness and the original is
- 18:41often connected. Now, pay attention to, this is
- 18:44often connected to one's desire to implement a covenant with
- 18:51someone or to honor an already established Covenant with
- 18:56someone. So let me let me just read you
- 18:59one example and you don't have to turn there but it's in 1st
- 19:01Samuel. 20. And this is when David and
- 19:04Jonathan are To depart from one another.
- 19:06In verse 8, we read there for a first Samuel, 20 deal.
- 19:10Kindly with your servant, the same word, kind deal, kindly
- 19:14with your servant for you have brought your servant into a
- 19:17covenant of the Lord with you. But if there is guilt and me
- 19:20kill me yourself or why should you bring me to your father's
- 19:23Davis? Speaking to Jonathan deal kindly
- 19:26with me because we have a covenant.
- 19:28So you see there's always a there's often not always a close
- 19:31connection between kindness and Covenant and that could be a
- 19:34clue. It could be a clue to the type
- 19:37of kindness that David wants to extend to hanoun.
- 19:42It's a deep loyal kindness and it could be that he is ready to
- 19:46do what he is doing here because there is already a previous
- 19:49covenant made with his father nakash.
- 19:53And so he wants to honor that Covenant or he simply wants to,
- 19:56he wants to create a covenant with his son who now is raining
- 20:00in his father's place. We are not sure it's not
- 20:02entirely clear, you know what is clear.
- 20:05The Motives the desires for why he wants to be kind to hanoun.
- 20:11Ephesians tells us Believers be kind to one another.
- 20:17That is a command. Again, it's not something
- 20:19optional, or we can excuse, as personality trait or lack
- 20:23thereof, it is something that we should all be wearing.
- 20:27And so, look at these things. These observations in terms of
- 20:30David's kindness. His plan to reach out to this
- 20:33man. Was because of a kind act that
- 20:37was done to him in previous years.
- 20:41There is no scriptural reference, to what, honeymoons,
- 20:43dad and Josh did for David. In fact, it's even a strange
- 20:47thing that there's even a relationship here.
- 20:48Who remembers the last time. We heard the name, the hache It
- 20:52was all the way back to First Samuel chapter 11.
- 20:55When Saul was freshly anointed to be king and the hash made a
- 20:59deal with some of those of Israel saying Hey listen gouge
- 21:02out your right eye essentially he's just has this cruel kind of
- 21:08deal with him. You know, let's surrender to me
- 21:10and he gives all these ultimatums that are just
- 21:12absolutely absurd. Salt comes to the rescue.
- 21:14That's the only reference we have to hash and we have David
- 21:17here wanting to be kind to his son.
- 21:21We have no reason to know why, because there's no scriptural
- 21:25reason, but we can assume that something happened during
- 21:28David's Exile when he was fleeing from Saul and he might
- 21:31have found some kind of Refuge some kind of sanctuary, some
- 21:34kind of provision, some kind of shelter with the king of the
- 21:37ammonites while he was in Exile, while he was hiding from the
- 21:40king of Israel. And so David here remembers that
- 21:44when he was in his younger years now years have gone by but he
- 21:48could not forget, that's so important.
- 21:51He could not forget the series of these are even that one great
- 21:56act of kindness. That was delivered unto him and
- 21:59it encouraged them to say. Now, I must be kind to you.
- 22:04And I thought about that. And I think, you know, there's
- 22:07something there in terms of our relationship with the Lord,
- 22:10often times our lack of faithfulness to the Lord today
- 22:14is because of our forgetfulness of his kindness yesterday.
- 22:18We forget I like to call it spiritual amnesia.
- 22:23How we so quickly fail to remember things that we even
- 22:30testified about things that just brought jolts of Joy occasions.
- 22:37When God's kindness was made manifest in your life, it just
- 22:42evaporates and we lose touch and lose sight of God's kindness and
- 22:47that is a gateway to many problems.
- 22:49In our Christian walk, including slothful service, we We drag our
- 22:54feet, we forget of God's kindness.
- 22:56And when we fall into this weird state where we feel like we're
- 23:00doing God, a favor now. Or we can fall into a murmuring
- 23:05Spirit or fearful spirit because we fail to remember God's
- 23:10kindness. And now here we are trying to
- 23:12navigate through his mysterious ways and we begin to panic
- 23:17because we forgot. And that's why David and many
- 23:21occasions. The Bible tells us including
- 23:24this man in his Psalms I'll give you one.
- 23:26Psalm 103 verse to bless the Lord O my soul and forget, not
- 23:31all his benefits. Forget not implying, what he's
- 23:36preaching to himself? You are prone to forgetting, you
- 23:40are prone to forgetting. And so, David has a spiritual
- 23:45man, you know what he did? He disciplined himself to
- 23:48remember, he discipline himself to rehearse, the kindness of
- 23:52God, the Deeds of the Lord, the wonders of God, the
- 23:55interventions of the Lord, because he realized that that
- 23:59act of remembrance was essential to fueling future faithfulness
- 24:06and Future fervency, For the Lord and the days to come
- 24:11remembering has this great ability of sustaining.
- 24:14You sustaining your affection sustaining your strength,
- 24:18sustaining your attendance, among God's people, to serve
- 24:21them and love God. And great trouble comes to your
- 24:24life. In mind, when we forget David
- 24:27here, did not forget, he could have easily forgotten.
- 24:31He got busy, he became a king. He's just an enemy.
- 24:34He's somebody distant. He doesn't he could not shake it
- 24:37off, he did. Something for me, I must do
- 24:40something back to him. Now this spiritual Amnesia is
- 24:43not just vertical, it's horizontal, it's horizontal.
- 24:47Meaning let me explain. Our forgetfulness of our
- 24:52relationship with the Lord, not that.
- 24:54We forget, we're in relationship with him.
- 24:55But what he's done in that relationship happens all the
- 24:58time among Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
- 25:02One of the, there's I wouldn't trade being in the ministry for
- 25:05the world. but with great, joy in the ministry, there are
- 25:08great, pains personal pains, yes, not enough to kick me to
- 25:15the curb by the grace of God, but enough to make your heart
- 25:18sorrowful one of the one of the Sorrows of Ministries how over
- 25:22the years You observe how Brothers and Sisters in Christ
- 25:27can so turn on each other. even after serving the lord together
- 25:32for many, many years It's incredible how people's
- 25:36attitudes towards others who they are in Covenant with can
- 25:39alter drastically. And it's painful.
- 25:44It's painful to see it's like seeing your own immune system
- 25:48attack itself right. There are diseases where your
- 25:52own body that's supposed to nourish you and protect you and
- 25:54shield. You now, turns on itself and the
- 25:58physical pain and the hopelessness of that can be
- 26:00translated spiritually when you see members of the body of
- 26:03Christ. Now hand fighting your own face
- 26:06and and your foot kicking the other leg.
- 26:08It's just such a strange sight to see but because we don't see
- 26:11it physically. We're not as affected by it, but
- 26:13if you have eyes to see in the spirit, it's a really disturbing
- 26:16sight. You have, you have people all
- 26:18the time and it's shown in many ways.
- 26:20There are some Christians who develop a critical spirit to
- 26:23local Ministries and churches and they can so easily dismiss
- 26:27all the blessings that they've enjoyed with that spiritual
- 26:29family, and they love to magnify imperfections and point out
- 26:35areas that are not intentionally wrong intentionally sinful but
- 26:40just need to be mature And Timely To occur for that to
- 26:43happen. You see people who are able to
- 26:45just because of one unintentional offense by another
- 26:48brother or sister hold on to that and disregard all the good
- 26:52that that person who offended you also offered.
- 26:56You people just kick those relations out to the curb and
- 26:59they just move on because of their passions or because of
- 27:01their offenses. Spiritual Amnesia forgetfulness.
- 27:07And unfortunately there are very few like David who can retain a
- 27:10perspective of gratitude and commitment and appreciation for
- 27:14those that also loved Christ as time goes on, you know, the
- 27:18Apostle Paul knew that pain. The Apostle Paul knew the pain
- 27:23of the fickleness of those who were once faithful to him and
- 27:27Ministry and the prayers and service.
- 27:30Can I show you one you want to sometimes we read things and we
- 27:33just want to look for Doctrine and that's okay.
- 27:35That's good. But it's, it's important to
- 27:37remember that. You got to get a read between
- 27:40the lines and realize that though, these are authors that
- 27:43were inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 27:45They are people still and these are real relationships.
- 27:48These are not pretend scenarios the Missiles are not pretend
- 27:51scenarios so that we can glean truths for churches today.
- 27:54Their real person-to-person Church from Ministry leaders,
- 27:58kind of Dynamics, I thought about this when I thought about
- 28:01this idea of spiritual Amnesia and how we were willing to just
- 28:04change, right? This almost like the spiritual,
- 28:07bipolar ISM, kind of thing, Galatians 4, Paul expresses,
- 28:12this pain when he dealt with this church when he when he was
- 28:15hearing about what was happening to them, in terms of their
- 28:18belief in the gospel, but more than that, it was affecting how
- 28:21they were treating him as as a spiritual father.
- 28:25And in Galatians 4 13, if you want to turn them to read it,
- 28:27you can if you want to just listen just listen.
- 28:32He writes to this church and he says isn't 4:13, you know, I was
- 28:36because of a bodily ailment that I preach the gospel to you.
- 28:39At first, I always love that verse, you know why?
- 28:42Because Paul was apparently sick in the region of galatia he
- 28:44couldn't move forward and because of his sickness, he
- 28:47stopped in this region and it was through that sickness that
- 28:50he met these Galatians and he preached to them and they got
- 28:52saved. You know what that tells me?
- 28:54Even when I have a cold, it's under the Sovereign control of
- 28:57God. I'm not saying it was just a
- 28:58cold. I think Paul will plow through a
- 29:00cold But that just a wonderful Insight.
- 29:03He goes, it was a through a bodily ailment that I met you
- 29:07and I preach the gospel to you and verse 14.
- 29:10And do my condition was a trial to you.
- 29:13You did not scorn or despise me but received me as an angel of
- 29:16God as Christ Jesus. Can you imagine how profound
- 29:19that is? You treated me as though I was
- 29:21Christ. You loved me.
- 29:24You serve me. You you attended to my needs as
- 29:26though. I was Jesus himself.
- 29:30That's an astounding statement to make.
- 29:33And then in verse 15, what then has become of your blessedness.
- 29:39For, I testify to you that if possible you would have gouged
- 29:43out your eyes and given them to me.
- 29:48Look at verse 16. This is so heart-wrenching have
- 29:50I then become your enemy by telling you the truth.
- 29:54Because what happened to you, we had sweet Fellowship together.
- 29:57Now you're suspicious suspiciously separating from me.
- 30:01You're criticizing me. You think I'm an enemy now?
- 30:03Because I preach the truth and there's false teachers, not
- 30:07telling you things about the wrong gospel and because it's a
- 30:09different gospel that I preach. Now, you're turning on me And
- 30:14he's do you remember how God providentially brought us
- 30:16together? I mean, this is about talk about
- 30:18spiritual Amnesia, we forget and then because we forget we begin
- 30:23to treat each other failing to realize how precious our
- 30:27fellowship is how wonderful our gifts are to one another pause
- 30:31like you loved me like as I was Jesus I preach the gospel to
- 30:36you, I brought you to the Lord. God uses me to see your eyes
- 30:41open to his truth. And now as time goes on and as
- 30:44different things occur, I'm now your enemy.
- 30:47How did that happen? Well, I'm telling you.
- 30:49It happens, it happens. Then happen with David happens
- 30:52in churches today. And so don't lose hope.
- 30:57Don't be discouraged, only thing as though you're the only person
- 30:59that this has ever happened to it happens all the time, it's
- 31:02happened with great men of God. And if you're ever discouraged
- 31:05to say, how is it remember speaking to those who who want
- 31:09to be kind and who are kind? And I'm so Overjoyed to know
- 31:13that this is a kind church, it's very kind Church.
- 31:19And you probably struggle with the idea.
- 31:22Or the experience. Why is not this kindness that
- 31:26I'm showing Mutual? All it takes is just one, two,
- 31:31three people. Even just one person for you to
- 31:32know the sting of that. And if you ever are tended to
- 31:35fall into despondency because of it just think about what God
- 31:39goes through with his kindness. If you want to escape
- 31:41depression, my friend just think about God's kindness and how it
- 31:46is received and or rejected more rejected than received you know
- 31:51that famous verse in. If Romans 2:4 right that it is
- 31:54the kindness of God that does what?
- 31:57It leads people to what repentance, it's God's kindness
- 32:02that leads people to repentance. You know what?
- 32:04That tells me his kindness is targeted to those who have not
- 32:08repented In other words, his enemies.
- 32:13God's kindness is not reserved for those who have done
- 32:16something for him first or have proven their Worth to be
- 32:19showered with his kindness. No, his kindness extends to
- 32:23those who have not even repented yet.
- 32:25In fact, that is the motivation for them to repent.
- 32:28Here's my question to all repent.
- 32:31A holy and just God who has every right?
- 32:36To flare his nostrils and breathe out fire and consume his
- 32:41enemies. Instead extents, kindness upon
- 32:43kindness in so many ways and yet at the end of it all like High
- 32:46Noon. They just want to go to war with
- 32:48him. Still and this is important
- 32:53because There's another observation I had.
- 32:56When I considered, David's kindness here, I was meditating
- 32:59on it, right? What was the reason for his
- 33:00kindness? Because huh?
- 33:01Nunes. Father did something for him in
- 33:04the past. In other words, David's really,
- 33:06just giving back. You did something for me.
- 33:09So now I'm going to do something for you.
- 33:11It makes sense, that seems like that's actually what's expected
- 33:14of you. What happens when you have
- 33:16nothing to work with Christian? That's an important thought.
- 33:21What do I do? If, in my world, the scripture
- 33:24tells me in Ephesians 4:32 and other instances in other places
- 33:28to be kind with christ-like. Kindness, what if there is
- 33:32nothing to work with, there's nothing to work with, with my
- 33:36spouse, it's very difficult to do with my family.
- 33:40I'm not really giving back anything to my church because
- 33:43I'm not really getting much from them.
- 33:46Speaking of hypothetical scenarios.
- 33:50Are we off the hook then? Because David seems to only be
- 33:52extending kindness because of something that was initiated
- 33:55early on. I'm sorry to disappoint you.
- 33:57We're not off the hook, we're not.
- 34:00Because when you go back to the first verse of chapter 9, David
- 34:04has another example that fits that scenario perfectly.
- 34:09Why did David show kindness to mephibosheth for whose sake?
- 34:17The fetishes did nothing. If I wish it could do nothing,
- 34:20he couldn't even walk himself to his field, to work to feed his
- 34:27son and his family. And David still says, because of
- 34:32Jonathan, I will be the initiator of kindness to you.
- 34:39And here's the point in the same way you and I have a motivation.
- 34:45His name isn't Jonathan doll. Jesus.
- 34:52David showed practical and merciful kindness to
- 34:55mephibosheth because David was motivated by his honor for
- 35:00Jonathan. And in the same way you and I
- 35:04will have to learn how to draw from our relationship with
- 35:07Christ to now offer Mercy to those that don't deserve it.
- 35:14For Jesus sake. For Jesus sake, I will be kind
- 35:20for Jesus sake. I will smile at those who frown
- 35:26at me, for Jesus sake. I, I will plan and execute small
- 35:32axe. But meaningful.
- 35:36Kindness. To my stubborn spouse.
- 35:43For Jesus sake. I will serve alongside with
- 35:47somebody who has an issue with me, though?
- 35:49It is. It is unjust for Jesus sake.
- 35:53Can I tell you something? Relational.
- 35:56Miracles can take place if every party of every sphere of every
- 36:01relationship did what they did, react enacted, for Jesus sake,
- 36:06it would be incredible, what we would see.
- 36:09And that's why for those in here who are looking for a spouse.
- 36:11Let me tell you something. Look for somebody who loves
- 36:14Christ more than you, Because in life, when things get difficult
- 36:19and you give them 0 reasons because of your own flesh, God
- 36:22forbid to have them love you. They're going to have to draw
- 36:26from something else to continue. Loving you.
- 36:29And it's going to have to be Jesus sake.
- 36:33If you really just have your eyes on him, if you just lift
- 36:36your head up and look to him and you say, Lord for your sake, all
- 36:42the power of that, the death to self that can come the Wonders.
- 36:49The Miracles I'm fully aware that kindness.
- 36:53Niceness gentleness patience. All these other things that are
- 36:57connected to kindness is not easy.
- 37:01And God is honest, enough to tell us is not easy and so, you
- 37:03know what he says, he informs Us in Galatians 5, that it's a
- 37:06fruit of the spirit. Not going to come from your
- 37:08strength. Is that going to come from your
- 37:10own ability? It's not going to come from you
- 37:13sitting alone in a dark room and trying to convince yourself that
- 37:16you're going to be this way because of for whatever reason
- 37:18and your own power on your own wisdom or your own strategy,
- 37:21it's the fruit of the Holy Spirit who can now bring this
- 37:24into reality. Do you do it for Jesus sake?
- 37:29I can't forgive well, there's a lot of problems with that.
- 37:33Why can't continue? Well, there's a lot of problems
- 37:35with that. Where are you drawing your
- 37:37motivation from well? Because, because I'm hurt, and
- 37:40I'm offended. And well, don't do it for your
- 37:43sake. Do it for Jesus sake.
- 37:46See how everything changes there?
- 37:48We would have a lot less counseling sessions.
- 37:50If we if we did that really, a lot of things would be thinned
- 37:53out. A lot of problems would just
- 37:55disappear if every Christian really took this to heart and
- 37:59said, you know, I'm going to do it for Christ's sake.
- 38:01I'm going to do for Christ's sake.
- 38:05It's so simple, isn't it? We want deep truths.
- 38:11We want to understand Mysteries and explain and debate the you
- 38:13just do it for Jesus sake. Let's get back to basic
- 38:18Christianity here. Let's not complicate our walk
- 38:21with the Lord, that's not fill our heads, but our hearts are
- 38:24shrunk and shriveled up because we don't know how to do simple
- 38:26things like this and God provides us illustrations.
- 38:30I can David's life. Okay, we're still in the first
- 38:32verse. I don't know how we're going to
- 38:33continue here at this pace. I noticed something else.
- 38:38It's very brief. There's a second motivation to
- 38:41why David went out to Honeymoon with kindness is because of the
- 38:44news of death Now how she died and while his son was wallowing
- 38:50in his sorrow, David was stirred to reach out his hand at the
- 38:53build, a relationship with him beyond the fact that there's an
- 38:57obvious call for us to mourn with those who mourn.
- 38:58I see a gospel truth tucked in this verse.
- 39:03And it is that Christ was also sent to us as a servant, not
- 39:06only to rescue us from the Pains of death, but to Deliver Us from
- 39:09the penalty of death, The loyal love of Jesus entered into our
- 39:15world. And part of that reason is
- 39:19because death came into our world and Hebrews 2 tells us
- 39:23that he wants to Deliver Us from the fear of death.
- 39:25He wants to Deliver Us from the pangs of death.
- 39:28And if Christ is a, if David is a picture of Christ, I think
- 39:30that there's something wonderful there as we look to Jesus.
- 39:35You know, when death entered into a hundreds World, David
- 39:37sent consolation, but when death and into our world, you know
- 39:40what the son of David did, he sent salvation?
- 39:45To rescue. David initiates it We praised
- 39:53his actions for being so consistent.
- 39:55It wasn't just a one-off show. It wasn't just chapter 9 as
- 39:57chapter 10. We praise it from a distance but
- 40:00do all appreciate it. We're about to find out.
- 40:04Because look at the response to David's Comfort being sent
- 40:08through his ambassadors verse 3, but the princes of the ammonites
- 40:11set to Hanna Lord. Do you think?
- 40:13Because David has sent comforters to you, that he is
- 40:16honoring. Your father has not David sent
- 40:18his servants to you to search the city at the Spy it out.
- 40:21And to overthrow it, So I don't know how it happened.
- 40:25The ambassadors came in, maybe they were dismissed for a
- 40:27moment. Maybe they were told to wait out
- 40:29into the hall and the advisors come to high noon.
- 40:32And they say this is this is fake.
- 40:34This is a joke. And they begin to now.
- 40:37So lies. And to plant ideas that are not
- 40:43true. Is that remind you of anybody?
- 40:49The enemy of our souls. Do you know what?
- 40:53This kindness is reacted with slanderous accusation slanderous
- 41:01accusation and if this reminds you of this picture, reminds you
- 41:04of what the devil would do to a vulnerable mind, then you're not
- 41:10far off. You know in 1st Timothy 3:11.
- 41:14We're told there that the wives of deacons should not be
- 41:19slanderers. Does anybody know the original
- 41:22word for Slanders? You might remember if you were
- 41:27in our study for Sam first. Timothy years ago.
- 41:32You ready for this Diablos? Diablos.
- 41:39You just imagine how that would read in the Greek.
- 41:41The wives of deacons should not be diabolo cesano.
- 41:44The plural of it. I'm not fluent in Greek.
- 41:47That's that's that's pretty insightful because it tells you
- 41:50the nature of being mischievous. And of intentionally saying
- 41:57something untrue about someone or something else.
- 42:01It's satanic. That's the origin of it.
- 42:06That's the life source of it. That's the fragrance of it.
- 42:10And you have these men that are saying things that are untrue.
- 42:13To Honeymoon about David and his intentions and his motivations.
- 42:18and I looked at this and I thought, how can this be?
- 42:23It's yet another reminder for those who want to be actively
- 42:25righteous you want to serve God, you want to obey him and every
- 42:29and with every faculty of who you are get this, I just want to
- 42:33prepare you. My brother, my sister, I want to
- 42:35prepare you your goodness in the name of Jesus Christ will not
- 42:39always be received with gratitude at times.
- 42:42It will come with questionable. And unjust, Payback.
- 42:49And when it does, don't lose hope.
- 42:51I'll tell you why in a moment. But I notice here as somebody
- 42:55mentioned that it was the princes of the ammonites.
- 42:56It wasn't it was a hanoun who had these thoughts to himself?
- 42:59It was an outside source that infiltrated his judgment and I
- 43:04think that is so important in light of the context Was hanoun
- 43:08An Old King or fleshly freshly established King brand new king
- 43:12budding as a leader and oftentimes in the infancy of a
- 43:16position. Or new responsibilities.
- 43:20There is the need for maturity in experience in experience here
- 43:25and I think hanoun is proving his inexperience by the fact
- 43:28that he is so quick to act upon what he is being told.
- 43:33He's so quick to react to what he is being informed with.
- 43:39And without pausing and examining the implications of
- 43:43acting upon this or investigating the claims that
- 43:45were brought before him. He just eats it up.
- 43:48Here's something I've said many times before, and I'll say it
- 43:50again, social naivete and spiritual immaturity can be
- 43:55proven in many ways. And one of those ways is
- 43:58gullibility, you know, gullibility means to be
- 44:02persuaded to believe something to be true without much effort.
- 44:07Now, gullibility might be cute with your group of friends when
- 44:10you like to pull pranks on each other.
- 44:12But it's a curse in the real world.
- 44:14It's a curse in the real world. Especially in this case because
- 44:20listen this presumption is going to lead to a bloody war.
- 44:23It's all going to come from Miss information on all out War where
- 44:27thousands are going to be slain and husbands won't be going back
- 44:30to their homes with their wives. And their children is all going
- 44:32to stem from thoughts that were untrue.
- 44:35It but was believed and acted upon as though they were
- 44:37dangerous man. Dangerous absolutely dangerous.
- 44:43And when I look at this I thought there's another lesson
- 44:45here when you look at it from hundreds perspective you want to
- 44:47know that what that lesson is the absolute necessity to ensure
- 44:52that the council that you and I receive in life comes from
- 44:56respectable and reputable God-fearing sources.
- 45:01It's not enough in life to seek guidance.
- 45:04You got to go more than that. You got to get the right
- 45:06guidance. The right guidance.
- 45:10Wisdom is proven and you seeking counsel, and I seeking counsel.
- 45:15But we got to take it a step further than that, it has to be
- 45:17the right counsel. I'm reminded of another king who
- 45:23reduced his kingdom from Twelve Tribes down to two because of
- 45:26wrong counsel. Do you remember his name?
- 45:29Rehoboam remember him. The son of Solomon.
- 45:33The son of Solomon was brought with a problem.
- 45:39And he sought counsel to know how to deal with it as a new
- 45:42king. And what happened with him?
- 45:46He got bad Council, he acted on that Council.
- 45:50And for Generations, the nation of Israel will not look the
- 45:52same. Does anybody remember what
- 45:55happened will turn to First Kings 12 verse a I want to I
- 45:58want you to see it for yourself because here's one way you and I
- 46:02can open our lives. Two wrong advice.
- 46:06That can be critical to our futures and our testimony for
- 46:09the Lord Jesus. First Kings 12:8, look at verse
- 46:148 very briefly And you can get bound bad counsel in many ways.
- 46:25You can get it from wrong books, you can get it from wrong
- 46:27podcast, you can get it from wrong preachers.
- 46:31But I think the most common way is with the wrong people in your
- 46:35life that you have direct connections to First Kings 12-8,
- 46:38but he being rehoboam abandoned the council that the old man
- 46:43gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up
- 46:47with him and stood before him. What stands out to you from that
- 46:52verse it's important to know the context just a little bit beyond
- 46:57it that helps. But for those who are familiar
- 46:59with this what is very concerning about?
- 47:02The way this king is handling the wisdom that he was receiving
- 47:06from two different parties. Okay, so there's an element of
- 47:21familiarity. The young men grew up with him.
- 47:23The old men were a little bit more distant in his life.
- 47:26I think there's something there. But realize that he about he
- 47:30abandoned the council that the old man gave him and he went
- 47:35with the council that the young it was immediate rejection and
- 47:38immediate reception from the young men what does that tell
- 47:42you? This King was not really looking
- 47:44for advice. He was looking for people to
- 47:47validate what he already decided in his heart.
- 47:51People look for advice that way. People go to multiple others
- 47:57before making an important decision with that kind of frame
- 48:00of mind. I'm not looking for the best
- 48:04option, the most righteous way. I'm looking for you to ease my
- 48:08Disturbed conscience, so I can do what I want to do more
- 48:12comfortably. That's what he's doing.
- 48:18And this can be done in many ways.
- 48:20Listen to this, it can be done with theological issues as well.
- 48:24Let me prove it to you. If you want to believe
- 48:29something. That is clearly wrong in the
- 48:33Bible. But fits your interpretation,
- 48:36you will be able to find others including theologians, who will
- 48:40agree with that interpretation. If you really want to believe
- 48:45something, if you really want to do something, if you really want
- 48:48to ask something, if you really want to plan something you can
- 48:50find a misapplied verse or verses to support you.
- 48:55Isn't that a frightening reality?
- 49:00And so the best way for you and I to avoid disaster in our life
- 49:06is to not. Look for people who think like
- 49:07us. It's to look for people who
- 49:09think like God, Is to look for people who are willing to
- 49:16correct you in love. You know what?
- 49:20Look at, look at the language here.
- 49:21You're still in First Kings 12. All right.
- 49:23Look at verse 6. Then King rehoboam took counsel
- 49:27with the old man, who stood who had stood before Solomon his
- 49:31father, while he was yet. Alive saying, how do you advise,
- 49:35what's the next word? How do you advise me to answer
- 49:38this people? Keep that in mind now.
- 49:40So this is what he asked when he spoke with the old men.
- 49:43How do you advise me? Now, scroll down to verse 9.
- 49:47This is when he speaks to the young men and he said to them,
- 49:51what do you advise that? What's the next word we What do
- 49:58you advise that? We answer this people who have
- 50:01said to me, lighten, the Yoke that your father put on us.
- 50:05How do you advise me in comparison to how do you advise
- 50:09that we a mark of a fool, is someone who intentionally
- 50:14surrounds himself with people who will agree with you no
- 50:18matter what A mark of a wise man is someone who has counsel in
- 50:27their lives. Of people who really walk with
- 50:31God. And we'll look at you say thus
- 50:35says the Lord. Thus says the Lord.
- 50:40And if you and I are not watchful of ourselves, we can
- 50:42make critical decisions in life, like rehoboam did by searching
- 50:47for illegitimate comfort. In the validation of others, as
- 50:51a way to soothe us. In our own deception.
- 50:59Your flesh and mine is very clever.
- 51:02It's very clever and finding ways to deceive.
- 51:05And I want to show, I want to show you the route of how people
- 51:08deceive themselves in this way. So we're still in first king.
- 51:10There's, let's look at another king.
- 51:12So we looked already at King hanoun.
- 51:13We looked at King who robohand, let's go to King Ahab.
- 51:17So go to chapter 22 of First Kings, and here's King Ava.
- 51:20He wants to go to war with the syrians.
- 51:23He wants to go to war with the syrians and so, he asked
- 51:26Jehoshaphat. Will you go to war with me?
- 51:28Why is he asking another king? While?
- 51:30Remember, because of her humble home, we have a divided Kingdom.
- 51:33You have the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 51:35You have the southern Kingdom King Ahab, is part of the
- 51:38northern Jehoshaphat is part of the Southern.
- 51:41He wants to come into a lion so that they can go to war with the
- 51:43syrians and Jehoshaphat already made the mistake to agree with
- 51:47him. But he had a little bit of
- 51:48discernment left in this container.
- 51:51He had enough discernment to ask for a prophetic confirmation.
- 51:56And so we read here in verse 5 of chapter 22 and Jehoshaphat
- 52:00said to the king of Israel. Inquire, first for the word of
- 52:03the Lord. Then the king of Israel
- 52:06gathered. The prophets together about 400
- 52:09men and said to them, shall I go to battle against ramoth-gilead
- 52:14or shall I refrain? And they said go up for the Lord
- 52:18will give it into the hand of the king.
- 52:22It seems like Ahab listen to Joseph at.
- 52:25It seemed like, he agree with them.
- 52:26Seem like he was doing the right thing.
- 52:30But there's a problem and the problem is indicated by verse 7,
- 52:34but Jehoshaphat said, is there not here?
- 52:37Another prophet of the Lord of whom we may inquire.
- 52:46So here's your host event looks like King Ahab.
- 52:49He says, look, I'm willing but we need some prophetic
- 52:51confirmation. Can we get a profit King ahaz
- 52:54is, I won't get you, I'll get you 400.
- 52:56So he gets 400 to come into His courts and he asked them, shall
- 53:00we go tour with ramoth-gilead or shall I refrain and 400?
- 53:04I can just imagine it and just they're just talking over each
- 53:06other. Go up, go up.
- 53:07Yes, do it, do it, you'll succeed, go for it.
- 53:09Go for it. And here's a happy smiling with
- 53:11his big grin, right? And Joseph has looking and he's
- 53:15nervous because he recognizes something about these profits.
- 53:20They're not prophets of Yahweh. They're not legitimate not one
- 53:26who abide by the word of God who walk in the fear of the Lord.
- 53:28So he looks at. Yeah, because look I know 400
- 53:33people in unison. Seems convincing.
- 53:36Do we have a real Prophet though?
- 53:42and let me tell you this, if you have 400 people who say the same
- 53:46thing, But what they say is against the word of God, they're
- 53:49all wrong. I don't care how convincing I
- 53:52don't care what it sounds like as a concert.
- 53:54If it is against the word of God, God's word jumps over four
- 53:59hundred or four hundred thousand And this tells me something else
- 54:04to just because they had the title profit, doesn't mean
- 54:08they're right, ready for a shocker, just because the man
- 54:11has a church doesn't mean he's always, right?
- 54:16Just because the guy has a Ph.D, doesn't mean he's gonna
- 54:19interpret the Bible Faithfully just because they have a grand
- 54:22Ministry with hundreds of thousands of views on, YouTube
- 54:24means what they're saying is accurate or faithful to the word
- 54:26of God. Be careful. there's a difference
- 54:30between a pastor and a pastor who fears God, there's a
- 54:34difference between a church and a church that abides by the word
- 54:37of God. Is there not a prophet of
- 54:41Yahweh? Now look at This is like
- 54:45unbelievable. Look at a Habs response in verse
- 54:498. And what he says, exposes the
- 54:53attitude that leads to self-destruction in this life
- 54:55and eternally verse 8, and the king of Israel said to
- 54:58Jehoshaphat. There is yet One Man by whom we
- 55:01may inquire of the Lord makya, the son of imlah, but I hate
- 55:05him. Why do you hate him?
- 55:09He had free. Never prophesize.
- 55:11Good concerning me, but evil And Joseph had said let not the king
- 55:17say, so he's like, trying to mildly rebuke him.
- 55:19He's like, nah, I think it'll be okay.
- 55:24He never prophesize. Good concerning, who me?
- 55:32Me when it's all about you. Deception is at your door.
- 55:40How frightening is this Micaiah? The prophet that he is alluding
- 55:43to will prove himself in this chapter to be a true servant of
- 55:47God, who speaks what God tells him to speak.
- 55:50And yet in the eyes of Ahab, his word is evil.
- 55:57His word is evil. Now that's interesting, his word
- 56:01is evil. Because it didn't benefit him.
- 56:04It didn't Empower him. It didn't satisfy him.
- 56:07It didn't agree with him. And because that is his world
- 56:10view. A very humanistic worldview of a
- 56:13worldview where you are the center of the universe because
- 56:17of that, he can take the message of a true man of God and say it
- 56:21is wicked. It is absolutely vile because
- 56:26for one reason, it doesn't profit me if you want God's
- 56:32guidance in your life, if you want safety.
- 56:36Fruition blessing, one. Easy way, ensure that your life
- 56:41is not about you, And be consumed with the glory of God.
- 56:49And be sure that whatever you seek in terms of advisory
- 56:52Council that as long as it is, the truth, you will obey a no
- 56:57matter what it costs you and you will know wonders in this life.
- 57:03Unfortunately Ahab is going to pay a hefty price for saying.
- 57:06This message is evil and I'm going to go with these 400
- 57:08Prophets. Hannon would pay a price.
- 57:13So we come down to the final two verses of our study.
- 57:17Verse 4 of chapter 10 of second Samuel.
- 57:20So I knew and took David's servants and shaved off half
- 57:23their beard. The beard of each and cut off
- 57:25their garments in the middle. And our wonderful associate.
- 57:30Joshua - that it was the split by the buttocks at their hips
- 57:36and sent them away. Now, if you thought that the
- 57:41Miss Judgment of the motives of David was bad enough hunting
- 57:46takes it to another level. Because hearing something about
- 57:51someone isn't just going to make you think differently about him
- 57:54eventually. If you're not careful, it will
- 57:56cause you to treat them differently.
- 57:59And that's exactly what is happening here.
- 58:00He takes it to a whole nother level and he humiliates these
- 58:04ambassadors, humiliates him by as we just read shaving, half
- 58:08the beard and mangling their garments sending them away with
- 58:14such disgrace back to Jerusalem. Now this is you don't need like
- 58:20a cultural insight to know why this is disturbing because
- 58:23anybody who would do that today, if the ambassador's of the
- 58:26nation America sent people to whatever nation and they That
- 58:29flew them back. You might cause a war.
- 58:33And that's what's going to happen here.
- 58:35But why is this particularly disturbing for David's men?
- 58:41It actually pertains to a law. A law in the Old Testament that
- 58:47deals with the appearance of Israel's men.
- 58:50And he light bulbs go off. Yes.
- 58:57Very good. Very good.
- 58:59Ryan, did you hear the answer? Let me tell it to you from
- 59:02Leviticus 19:27. Here is what would seem as
- 59:05strange instruction to us today? You shall not round off the hair
- 59:09of your temples or Mar the edges of your beard.
- 59:15In the old Covenant. This is just one of the codes of
- 59:18many codes for Holiness to make the nation of Israel.
- 59:22Distinct from their neighboring foreign false god worshipping
- 59:26counterparts. And what hanoun does here is is
- 59:31far greater than insulting the manhood Of David's ambassadors.
- 59:35They are essentially attacking the Holiness of God.
- 59:42And very discreet way in a way that you.
- 59:44And I would not know unless we knew these Specific
- 59:47Instructions. So you can imagine the
- 59:49embarrassment that these men felt for the obvious reasons.
- 59:52But also, because their hearts, let's assume that they love God.
- 59:57And they had great joy and going to Gentiles and extending the
- 1:00:01kindness of their King, which is a reflection of the kindness of
- 1:00:04God. And here, they are instead.
- 1:00:09Harshly treated. And here's the theme of his
- 1:00:12really, just the thing that's just hammering us tonight.
- 1:00:17If you are faithful even kind and faithful do not be surprised
- 1:00:23at the harshness of this world. When you try to reach out to it,
- 1:00:26do not be surprised by the ruthlessness of those that you
- 1:00:29try to serve or if you've served for years.
- 1:00:33It can come and it can come in a fierce manner.
- 1:00:37These men had their beard shade. What happened to Christ beard,
- 1:00:41they plucked it. And they spat in it and they
- 1:00:46blindfolded him and they punch them in the face and said, hook
- 1:00:49prophesy to us. Who did it?
- 1:00:55When I look at this, I can say so much more.
- 1:00:59But you and I have to end on a hopeful note and there is a
- 1:01:02hopeful note at the end here. Because if we hear this over and
- 1:01:05over as you did tonight, you might live Faithfully but you're
- 1:01:08going to Flinch throughout your journey to that always being
- 1:01:11suspicious of people always wondering their motives.
- 1:01:13And and now here you are you can be crippled to actually continue
- 1:01:17and kindness because you're thinking, is it really worth it?
- 1:01:21Is it really worth it? Well, for Jesus sake, it is for
- 1:01:25your own sake, maybe not. But for his sake, he is
- 1:01:28infinitely Worthy. And what I see David doing as we
- 1:01:32as we mention in our initial conversation with David is doing
- 1:01:36here, is somewhat of a, just a hint of what our King will do
- 1:01:41for us. We read here in verse 5, when I
- 1:01:46was told David the news came to David of what happened to his
- 1:01:50ambassadors. And even just he didn't just
- 1:01:55hear it, he put it into account and he was going to do something
- 1:01:58about it. And what he did here was that he
- 1:02:02called to them to stay in Jericho and to wait until the
- 1:02:08other half of their beard came out.
- 1:02:11And I'm sure he sent for fresh garments so that when they would
- 1:02:15come back to Jerusalem, their honor would be restored. here's
- 1:02:21what you have to understand in the same way, politically if
- 1:02:25this nation were to send ambassadors to another Nation.
- 1:02:28And they were bullied, or they were harmed, or they were
- 1:02:32assassinate. Whatever the case may be
- 1:02:35politically speaking, whatever happens to the Ambassador
- 1:02:38happens to the leader of the nation that they represent.
- 1:02:42You and I are ambassadors of Jesus Christ, that is our title
- 1:02:46in this world. We're I like to tell people, my
- 1:02:49citizenship people say, are you? I'm a dual citizen.
- 1:02:52I have one in Canada when here, but I'm starting to train myself
- 1:02:54to say. I have actually three
- 1:02:55citizenships I have one here and one of the Canada and one in
- 1:02:59heaven. Talk about a conversation
- 1:03:02opener. They might look at you like
- 1:03:03you're crazy but at least you did the gospel in.
- 1:03:07Our citizenship is in heaven. We're traveling through this
- 1:03:09world. We're ambassadors.
- 1:03:10We have a message. We are representing our Christ.
- 1:03:12Whatever happens to us, happens to the apple of his eye.
- 1:03:18And as David took it into account, so will Christ.
- 1:03:22And Christ has the ability that in this life to restore our
- 1:03:26honor. You know, one of those examples
- 1:03:27in the Old Testament that I always love it, when Joseph was
- 1:03:30falsely accused remember for rape thrown into a prison for
- 1:03:34years? That that can anger somebody
- 1:03:37who's about True Justice because you think this is unfair, he was
- 1:03:41faithful to Potter for how can this happen?
- 1:03:45And it's a subtle thing. But when you realize that he was
- 1:03:48promoted to be second-in-command just under the authority of
- 1:03:51pharaoh, something happens in that moment that celebratory
- 1:03:54moment, he gives him a chariot, they travel through Egypt and
- 1:03:58the instruction was that all were to bow to Joseph.
- 1:04:01You know what? I like to think that Potter for
- 1:04:04in his wife, had to bow to him. Can you imagine the site
- 1:04:10Potiphar's? I would I would pay to see her
- 1:04:12face in that moment. Here's Joseph promoted.
- 1:04:18Established secure honored, God's faithfulness proved to be
- 1:04:24true. And as he's traveling there in
- 1:04:26his Chariot to the right. You see, part of her, I'm sure.
- 1:04:29Maybe he was embarrassed bowing and there's Potiphar's wife with
- 1:04:33a grin on her face, having to Balor need God can do it in this
- 1:04:36life. But he doesn't have to.
- 1:04:41And even if he doesn't, I'm promise one thing in the life to
- 1:04:45come. He will.
- 1:04:47In the life to come, he will. And I want to end with this
- 1:04:50text. If I were to ask you, why is
- 1:04:53Jesus coming back? What will he do?
- 1:04:54When he come back? We can list many things.
- 1:04:57Perhaps you have not considered this second Thessalonians
- 1:05:02chapter 1, a couple of verses, and I'm going to let you go. 2nd
- 1:05:10Thessalonians 1:5. That chapters about the second
- 1:05:17coming of Christ. And in verse 5 of chapter one,
- 1:05:21what do we read? This is evidence of the
- 1:05:24righteous Judgment of God that you may be considered worthy of
- 1:05:28the kingdom of God for which you are also suffering.
- 1:05:32Now, look at verse 6 since indeed, God considers it just to
- 1:05:38repay with Affliction. Those who afflict you And to,
- 1:05:45Grant relief to you who are afflicted, as well, as to us.
- 1:05:52When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty
- 1:05:55angels, if you are enduring scorn persecution, if things
- 1:06:02have been taken from you, if your reputation has been marred,
- 1:06:07If you have received evil for kindness.
- 1:06:12Here's what the Lord promises us.
- 1:06:13Who are faithful? He finds it just to afflict
- 1:06:18those who have Afflicted us. Here's if I take my eschatology,
- 1:06:24and I have it in compartments. And I have one compartment,
- 1:06:26says, reasons and what are, what are some things?
- 1:06:30The Lord is going to do when he returns.
- 1:06:32Here's one slot. Retribution and relief for The
- 1:06:38Afflicted. Retribution and relief for The
- 1:06:45Afflicted. And if you have been Afflicted,
- 1:06:48then this is what he will do for you.
- 1:06:54And I'll end by saying to those who have been afflicted.
- 1:06:58Or who are enduring affliction. You may have to be like those
- 1:07:03men who were told to remain in Jericho what I mean by that.
- 1:07:07You may have to wait a little bit.
- 1:07:10You may have to wait a little bit.
- 1:07:12You may actually live your whole life afflicted.
- 1:07:15Humiliated embarrassed lied about you may have your whole
- 1:07:22life finding difficulty to find a job.
- 1:07:27To find favor. To know memories with your
- 1:07:31family, who refused to have any association with you because
- 1:07:35you're an ambassador of Christ in this counter Christ culture.
- 1:07:40It may be painful to have a husband or a wife.
- 1:07:44Who does not love the Jesus that you love or children who mock
- 1:07:49you? For the Christ that you love who
- 1:07:52will not take serving Jesus. Seriously, as you had hoped and
- 1:07:55prayed for for your children. But, but take this example as an
- 1:08:01instruction for you, just wait. Retribution will come.
- 1:08:09Relief will come. And God will be good to you for
- 1:08:14being good to those who failed to be good to you.
- 1:08:18Let's pray. Lord, we learn in the past two
- 1:08:47weeks. That sometimes there is great
- 1:08:53reward for our christ-like kindness.
- 1:08:59But we learned tonight. Sometimes there is a reproach
- 1:09:03for it. Whether it is reward or reproach
- 1:09:10help us to remain like Jesus. It would be comforted to know
- 1:09:18that you like, King David. Are fully aware of the
- 1:09:23Affliction and the shame that we endure. and Lord, when it gets
- 1:09:29more difficult to follow you, in this world that is becoming
- 1:09:36darker and darker made this Bible study revisit our hearts
- 1:09:45For those who go out and evangelize.
- 1:09:50And they seem to have see no fruit.
- 1:09:52They're only cussed at and mocked and threatened and like
- 1:09:57these ambassadors of David, only go home.
- 1:10:00With their heads hanging low. Remember.
- 1:10:05And help us Lord to remember. That you will bring relief to us
- 1:10:11soon. Now, you will deal with those
- 1:10:15who have harmed us. Laurie.
- 1:10:20Rest tonight. We ask that you fill us with
- 1:10:26your Holy Spirit. So that we would not suffer from
- 1:10:30spiritual amnesia. Forget your kindness toward us.
- 1:10:35And lose our way down down the road.
- 1:10:39Or lose sight of the preciousness of our relationship
- 1:10:42to one another. and hold up, offenses and cut off in several
- 1:10:47members because we refuse to recall.
- 1:10:54The blessing. That our brothers and sisters
- 1:10:57really are. And that you have brought these
- 1:11:01people into our lives as gifts. And as co-laborers in Christ,
- 1:11:05may this church be a Kinder Church than it already is, but
- 1:11:10we worship you. Lord, our hearts ache from the
- 1:11:14bottom of our hearts. We say come Lord, Jesus.
- 1:11:18We grown with creation and we say, we want you to just just
- 1:11:21comic just come We're weary we're tired.
- 1:11:27And Lord we trust that your timing is perfect.
- 1:11:30So if it is not in our lifetime it's if it's in the next
- 1:11:33lifetime or 100 years from now a thousand years from now, help us
- 1:11:36be faithful. No matter what comes our way for
- 1:11:40it? In Jesus name we pray.
- 1:11:43Amen. Can We Worship the Lord together
- 1:11:47with the remaining strength that we have?
- 1:11:51Amen. Let's Stand Together.
- 1:11:51Amen. Let's Stand Together.
