- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's the 28th of August. It's a Wednesday.
- 0:18And here we are in the middle of the week, coming over the hump,
- 0:21heading down toward the other side.
- 0:23Hope you're going well, friends. Me.
- 0:25Oh, thanks for asking. I'm going great.
- 0:28Today's a good day because today we get to read well, it's a very
- 0:32important chapter. I I recently heard my Bishop
- 0:36describing this chapter as the chapter which gives us hope as
- 0:40Christian people. And this is where Paul describes
- 0:44the resurrection to that church in Corinth to make sure that
- 0:47they understand that that is real.
- 0:50And it's not some mystical philosophical simile or analogy,
- 0:56but this is real. Friends, one day we will exhale
- 1:00for the last time and we will move from this little old broken
- 1:04body into a resurrection more glorious than we could possibly
- 1:08wrap our heads around. And this chapter really spells
- 1:11out what is that going to look like?
- 1:13So you ready buckle yourselves in.
- 1:15This is a long term view of the reality for you and me and
- 1:20everybody who loves Jesus. So wow, let us read it together.
- 1:24First Corinthians chapter 15 Now let me remind you, dear
- 1:39brothers and sisters, of the good news I preached to you
- 1:42before. You welcomed it then, and you
- 1:45still stand firm in it. It is this good news that saves
- 1:51you if you continue to believe the message I told you.
- 1:54Unless of course, you believed something that was never true.
- 1:57In the 1st place, I passed on to you what was most important and
- 2:02what had also been passed on to me.
- 2:05Christ died for our sins, just as the scriptures said.
- 2:10He was buried and He was raised from the dead on the third day,
- 2:14just as the scripture said. He was seen by Peter and then by
- 2:19the 12. After that.
- 2:21He was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most
- 2:25of whom are still alive, though some have died.
- 2:29Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles.
- 2:34Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I
- 2:39also saw him, for I am the least of all the apostles.
- 2:44In fact, I'm not even worthy to be called an apostle after the
- 2:48way I persecuted God's church. But whatever I am now, it is all
- 2:53because God poured out His special favour on me, and not
- 2:57without results, for I have worked harder than any of the
- 3:02other apostles, yet it was not I but God who was working through
- 3:07me by His grace. So it makes no difference
- 3:11whether I preach or they preach, for we all preach the same
- 3:14message you have already believed.
- 3:18But tell me this, since we preach that Christ rose from the
- 3:21dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of
- 3:25the dead? For if there is no resurrection
- 3:28of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.
- 3:32And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching
- 3:37is useless, and your faith is useless, and we apostles would
- 3:43be lying about God. For we have said that God raised
- 3:47Christ from the grave, but that can't be true if there is no
- 3:50resurrection of the dead. And if there is no resurrection
- 3:54of the dead, then Christ has not been raised.
- 3:57And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is
- 4:00useless and you are still guilty of your sins.
- 4:05In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost.
- 4:10And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more
- 4:15to be pity than anyone in the world.
- 4:19But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead.
- 4:25He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.
- 4:30So you see, just as death came into the world through a man,
- 4:35now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another
- 4:39man. Just as everyone dies because we
- 4:43all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given
- 4:48new life. But there is an order to the
- 4:52resurrection. Christ was raised as the first
- 4:55of the harvest. Then all who belong to Christ
- 4:59will be raised when he comes back.
- 5:02After that the end will come, when he will return the Kingdom
- 5:08over to God the Father, having destroyed every ruler and
- 5:12authority and power. For Christ must reign until he
- 5:17humbles all his enemies beneath his feet, and the last enemy to
- 5:22be destroyed is death. For the Scriptures say God has
- 5:27put all things under his authority.
- 5:31Of course, when it says all things are under his authority,
- 5:34that does not include God himself who gave Christ his
- 5:37authority. Then, when all things are under
- 5:40his authority, the Son will put himself under God's authority,
- 5:46so that God, who gave his Son authority over all things, we
- 5:51will be utterly supreme over everything, everywhere.
- 5:56If the dead will not be raised, what point is there in people
- 6:00being baptised for those who are dead?
- 6:03Why do it unless the dead will someday rise again?
- 6:07And why should we ourselves risk our lives hour by hour?
- 6:11For I swear, dear brothers and sisters, that I face death
- 6:15daily. This is as certain as my pride
- 6:19in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done in you.
- 6:22And what value was there in fighting wild beasts, those
- 6:27people of Ephesus, if there will be no resurrection from the
- 6:31dead? And if there is no resurrection,
- 6:35let's feast and drink, for tomorrow we die.
- 6:39Don't be fooled by those who say such things, for bad company
- 6:43corrupts good character. Think carefully about what is
- 6:47right and stop sinning. For to your shame I say that
- 6:52some of you don't know God at all.
- 6:57But someone may ask, how will the dead be raised?
- 7:01What kind of bodies will they have?
- 7:03What a foolish question. When you put a seed into the
- 7:07ground, it doesn't grow into a plant unless it dies first.
- 7:13And what you put in the ground is not the plant that will grow,
- 7:17but only a bare seed of wheat or whatever you are planting.
- 7:21Then God gives it the new body he wants it to have.
- 7:25A different plant grows from each kind of seed.
- 7:29Similarly, there are different kinds of flesh, one kind for
- 7:33humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another
- 7:37for fish. There are also bodies in heaven
- 7:40and bodies on the earth. The glory of the heavenly bodies
- 7:44is different from the glory of the earthly bodies.
- 7:48The sun has one kind of glory, while the moon and stars each
- 7:52have another kind, and even the stars differ from each other in
- 7:56their glory. It is the same way with the
- 7:59resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted
- 8:03in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to life
- 8:08forever. Our bodies are buried in
- 8:11brokenness, but they will be raised in glory.
- 8:15They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength.
- 8:20They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised
- 8:24as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural
- 8:28bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.
- 8:33The scripture tells us the 1st man, Adam became a living
- 8:37person, but the last Adam, that is Christ, is a life giving
- 8:43spirit. What comes first is the natural
- 8:46body, then the spiritual body comes later.
- 8:50Adam, the 1st man was made from the dust of the earth, while
- 8:54Christ the 2nd man came from heaven.
- 8:58Earthly people are like the earthly man, and heavenly people
- 9:03are like the heavenly man. Just as we are now like the
- 9:07earthly man, we will someday be like the heavenly man.
- 9:12What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that our
- 9:16physical bodies cannot inherit the Kingdom of God.
- 9:20These dying bodies cannot inherit what will last forever.
- 9:26But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret.
- 9:30We will not all die, but we will all be transformed.
- 9:36It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the
- 9:39last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds,
- 9:43those who have died will be raised to life forever, and we
- 9:48who are living will also be transformed.
- 9:51For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that
- 9:55will never die. Our mortal bodies must be
- 9:58transformed into immortal bodies.
- 10:01Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies
- 10:05that will never die, this scripture will be fulfilled.
- 10:09Death is swallowed up in victory.
- 10:12Oh death, where is your victory? Oh death, where is your sting?
- 10:19For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law
- 10:23gives sin its power. But thank God, he gives us
- 10:28victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 10:34So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and
- 10:37immovable. Always work enthusiastically for
- 10:42the Lord. For you know that nothing you do
- 10:45for the Lord is ever useless. Jesus, thank you.
- 11:00Thank you that you have laid down your life for us not to
- 11:05stay dead, but to be resurrected.
- 11:08God raised you from life as a deposit, as that firstfruits, so
- 11:12that all of us can follow. And when we follow you, this
- 11:17seed, this earthly body, which month after month, year after
- 11:23year, ages and breaks down, but that seed will be planted and
- 11:29from there a spiritual body which is eternal and perfect
- 11:34will come. And we will get to be with you
- 11:38physically for eternity, surrounded by your love and your
- 11:44presence in a mind blowing, glorious way that we cannot even
- 11:48begin to comprehend. Oh Jesus, what a gift you give
- 11:54us. And when you write in this very
- 11:58book that faith, hope, and love are the three eternal things
- 12:02that will come with us. Lord, we claim this hope, this
- 12:07hope of a glorious future with you.
- 12:09Ah, we love you and we are so grateful for all that you have
- 12:15planned for us. Give us a bounce in our step and
- 12:20buoyancy in our hearts as we look forward to that eternity
- 12:25with You. And we pray all of this in your
- 12:29holy saving name, Jesus, Amen.
