- 0:57and help other Alcoholics achieve sobriety.
- 1:02Hi everyone. My name's Leslie.
- 1:04I'm an alcoholic and I'm very, very privileged to be able to
- 1:08make this recording for you. I'm one of those people that's
- 1:13never had a normal drink. I've never had 2 drinks and
- 1:18thought my word that's wonderful, I'm feeling so
- 1:21relaxed but that's enough because 2 drinks was never
- 1:24enough for me. I was a weird kid.
- 1:28I never really felt that I fitted in anywhere and and life
- 1:34was just really hard work. I never quite knew how to what
- 1:39to do in any situation, how to respond to anything.
- 1:44I quite envied people who seem to float through life
- 1:48effortlessly and there didn't seem to be any strain or
- 1:52struggle with them. I was always, I seem to be
- 1:56always saying the wrong thing or upsetting the wrong people or I
- 2:00had the best of intentions, but I just couldn't do life and I
- 2:05didn't know what was wrong with me.
- 2:07But at age 15, me and her girlfriend experimented with
- 2:14some Southwark beer, I think it was, and we deliberately set out
- 2:21to get drunk. And we did.
- 2:23And I still remember how good it made me feel.
- 2:27And I was able to get rid of all the fears and the worries and
- 2:32the anxieties that I walked around with on a regular basis.
- 2:37And, and I was able to relax and enjoy myself and, and feel good.
- 2:45And even that night, though we drank to get drunk to pass out
- 2:51and it was a throw up and woke up the next day with the mother
- 2:56of all hangovers and had to wash the sheets and wash the floor
- 3:02and, and things like that. But I remembered how good I'd
- 3:06felt the night before and I thought that was marvellous, I'm
- 3:10going to do that again. And obviously a 15 year old
- 3:14can't get their hands on grog very often, but anytime I had
- 3:18the opportunity, I always drank to get drunk and I was often
- 3:24very messy. And yeah, so I, I embarked on my
- 3:31quest to find out exactly how I could drink as much as I want
- 3:36and not be abusive or on occasions physically violent or
- 3:42just the messy person passed out on the back lawn or the front
- 3:46lawn. And sometimes I knew who owned
- 3:50the front lawn and sometimes I didn't.
- 3:52And, and it was just a disaster. I mean, what do you do when you
- 3:58feel bad when you're sober? Drink gives you a bit of
- 4:02happiness and release, but the consequences of the drink are
- 4:07bad. You, you're between a rock and a
- 4:11hard place. But anyhow, I pursued this magic
- 4:16formula that I was going to find of how to drink and not be
- 4:19messy. So it was things like don't
- 4:23drink beer, it's no good for you and you're running to the loo
- 4:27all the time. You know, wine must be better.
- 4:30Wine's respectable. You can put it in a wine glass
- 4:34and, and it it looks, it looks suave.
- 4:39But you then, then I graduated to Chateau cardboard and
- 4:45drinking it out of Vegemite glasses.
- 4:48And yeah, that that's not, that's not suave drinking or
- 4:54spirits, because you don't need much spirits to get the same
- 4:57effect. So you'll be drinking less and
- 5:00you'll probably look a bit, you know, more suave and but you'll
- 5:06get the same effect. But yeah, spirits acted on me
- 5:10like someone with a hammer, you know, a little tap, a bigger
- 5:14tap, a huge tap, and down she goes.
- 5:17And yeah, I just never, ever found the the mixture that would
- 5:22allow me to drink as much as I want and and stay respectable.
- 5:28But I didn't know what was wrong with me.
- 5:31All I knew was that I was miserable sober and to get a bit
- 5:35of enjoyment in my life, I had to drink.
- 5:38And, and so I didn't know that that was alcoholism.
- 5:44I thought I had lots of problems, lots of psychiatric
- 5:47issues perhaps, or I'd had a terrible childhood or, or I was
- 5:51a very unlucky person or something like that.
- 5:55And if I could just fix up, you know, my, my mental issues, I'd
- 5:59be fine. And you know, when you, you
- 6:02don't know what the problem really is and you are trying to
- 6:06fix it, it does not work because you are fixing the wrong
- 6:10problem. And but I worked hard at it.
- 6:16I went and saw psychologists and they could not help me because
- 6:20you do not tell anyone that you drink.
- 6:22I mean, that is disgraceful. I saw a psychiatrist once and
- 6:29poor man, he did not quite know what to do with me.
- 6:32I went to lots of consciousness, you know, consciousness raising
- 6:40groups, you know, the, the women's awareness, the
- 6:46transactional analysis. I did that.
- 6:51Yeah, lots of things. And I bought self help books by
- 6:55the dozen. I had several $1000 I worked out
- 6:59later on worth of self help books and not one of them had
- 7:03helped me really. And I tried hard, I did all the
- 7:06suggested things but nothing was working.
- 7:11But you know, life got very messy indeed.
- 7:14I became one of the loneliest people on the planet.
- 7:19I don't think anyone is as lonely as the alcoholic because
- 7:23you can never be yourself. Who wants to sit down at the at
- 7:30the morning tea break at work and say, God, I got plastered
- 7:34last night again and I threw up here, there and everywhere.
- 7:38And I had a row with the next door neighbor and I turned up
- 7:41the the music so loud that the police had to come.
- 7:45And now I feel terrible and I can't, yeah, you can't say that
- 7:49if you want to be employed. So you have to say, oh, I didn't
- 7:55do very much last night, you know, or over the weekend.
- 7:58You have to lie. You have to, you have to appear
- 8:01to be something that you're not and you have to cover up what
- 8:05you are. I had to get up really early in
- 8:08the morning before work because I had to try and fix the shakes
- 8:15because your hands shake and I'd eat throaties or other cough
- 8:20lozenges to try and disguise the smell on my breath.
- 8:24And you, you pull yourself together, you have a shower, you
- 8:27put the eye drops in because your eyes are bloodshot.
- 8:30And, and you just try and pull it together to go to work and
- 8:35become what you need to be to earn the money to come home via
- 8:39the the bottle shop and drink and get yourself plastered that
- 8:43night. And and it's you're like a rat
- 8:46on a wheel. There's no getting off.
- 8:48And it's just awful. And you don't know what to do.
- 8:52But yeah, so I spent several years in that predicament and I
- 9:00didn't know what to do with myself or where to go or I'd
- 9:04exhausted all avenues and I was living by myself by that stage.
- 9:08You can't have boyfriends or husbands or anything like that
- 9:11when you drink like that. They they move on very quickly.
- 9:16Anyhow, I was lucky to lucky enough to ring AAI.
- 9:21Don't really know why, because I didn't think my problem was
- 9:25alcohol or and I didn't know there was such a thing as
- 9:29alcoholism. All I knew was that I liked to
- 9:33drink and I couldn't drink safely and I was disgusting
- 9:37every time I got drunk. And yeah, but like I say, I was
- 9:45lucky enough to go to my first AA meeting and the people there
- 9:48recognised what I was immediately.
- 9:51Perhaps it was the shaking hand that couldn't hold a full cup of
- 9:56coffee. Had to have half a cup of coffee
- 9:59or the shaking hand that they had to put my seat belt on for
- 10:02me in the car. I wasn't driving.
- 10:04They were kind enough to drive me there.
- 10:08Yeah. I just couldn't coordinate the
- 10:10seat belt. And the fact that I looked at
- 10:12the floor, I couldn't look anyone in the eye because I was
- 10:16so ashamed of what I was. And.
- 10:19And that didn't bother them. They, they recognise me for the
- 10:23alcoholic that I was and they knew I could get better.
- 10:26I didn't believe them. I listened to the speakers that
- 10:29night and there was a lot of speakers in the room who had a
- 10:33lot of sobriety up. They had 20 years and five years
- 10:37and and that was lovely for them.
- 10:39You know, I wished them well but I didn't believe.
- 10:44I knew that I could not stay 20 years off the grog or five
- 10:47years. But there, there was a young man
- 10:51got up to speak and he was nearer my age and he said that
- 10:59he had 12 days sober. And I thought, my God, I don't
- 11:05think I could go 12 days. I haven't been 12 days sober in
- 11:08a lot of years. But maybe I could go 2 or maybe
- 11:13I could go 3. And that young man, I don't
- 11:17know, I haven't seen him since. But he gave me hope that night
- 11:21and I owe him a great debt. And the people in the meeting
- 11:28said keep coming back and and I did.
- 11:32It was wonderful. I had I hadn't been invited back
- 11:35anywhere for quite some time and suddenly I had somewhere to go.
- 11:40The people were nice to me. They didn't mind that I look
- 11:44like something that the cat dragged in and I looked at the
- 11:47floor all the time. They said keep coming back.
- 11:50And they said, how are you? And if you gave them the stock
- 11:53standard answer that people give of, oh, I'm OK, thank you,
- 12:00they'd say you're 5 days sober, how can you be OK?
- 12:04Tell me what's really happening on.
- 12:06They were interested in me. It was wonderful.
- 12:11And gradually, gradually, you know, you start to recover from
- 12:16your alcoholism. Not that anyone ever makes a
- 12:19full recovery, you know, but we it's progress, not perfection.
- 12:26Just the fact that you're you're not drinking means that you're
- 12:32not creating chaos in your own life.
- 12:34The chaos isn't mounting and and financially it helps too if you
- 12:41don't call it the BWS every night.
- 12:42Although I had several bottle shops I went to because you
- 12:46couldn't go to the same one every night because I'd think
- 12:49you drank too much. So you have to have a round of
- 12:52bottle shops that you visit. And, you know, not one of them
- 12:57sent me a a card saying where are you?
- 13:00We miss you. Our profits are down.
- 13:02They, I don't know how they're surviving without me.
- 13:08Yeah. So the chaos starts to get.
- 13:11You're not adding to the chaos in your life when you don't
- 13:14drink, but there's certainly a lot of chaos leftover from your
- 13:20drinking days. And that's where the a, A
- 13:22program comes in because you have to deal with that stuff.
- 13:28And it's, it was, you know, people you have to make amends
- 13:32to the people that you've done the wrong thing by.
- 13:34And making amends doesn't mean you just front up and say sorry.
- 13:39It's a case of what can I do to make up for what I've done?
- 13:43If you owe money and I owe a considerable amount of money,
- 13:47you have to pay it off. And I looked at how much I owed
- 13:53and I didn't see how I was ever going to pay that off.
- 13:58But I had a bit of spare cash by this time, not much every week.
- 14:03And I was employed. I still had a job, which was a
- 14:07minor miracle. And they said to me, what you do
- 14:12is every payday you put aside a certain amount of money and you
- 14:15send it to who you owe it to. And you do that every, every
- 14:20payday without fail. No excuses.
- 14:23You, you'd pay that off before you, you do anything else,
- 14:26before you buy anything else. And I followed their advice and
- 14:31you know, eventually it was all paid.
- 14:34Took more than three years, but, but eventually I was debt free
- 14:40and, and the house that I was living in, I was living, it had
- 14:46degenerated into a bit of a tip. You know, there was stuff
- 14:49everywhere and it was dreadful and I really didn't, you'd look
- 14:53at it and you'd think where do you start?
- 14:56You know, it's just terrible. Me and my ex-husband had painted
- 15:00the place without using drop sheets and you can imagine what
- 15:04sort of a mess that made. But yeah, part of the A, A
- 15:10program is they told me that every night you come home from
- 15:13work and you do a, a bit towards making the house better, half an
- 15:18hours worth. It might be that you clean out
- 15:21one drawer or you get out and you do half an hours worth in
- 15:24the garden. But you do that every night
- 15:27without fail. And it it's six weeks, you can
- 15:31see that someone had been trying to make things better.
- 15:33But my word, it's six months. At six months, it was a huge
- 15:38difference. And you know, I was eventually
- 15:42able to get the house to the state where it could be sold and
- 15:45I could move on. And you know, I use that
- 15:50technique of a little bit. But every night without fail in
- 15:54lots of areas, I went back and did some study and got some more
- 15:57qualifications and which was a help in the career.
- 16:02You have to rebuild your career from the, from the rubbish heap
- 16:07you've turned it into. And yeah, but every night
- 16:11without fail, that can change your life.
- 16:14And it was the living skills that they taught me in here that
- 16:17made such a difference in my life.
- 16:22It's not just stopping drinking, although that's the starting
- 16:26point. You can't do anything while
- 16:28you're drinking. But it's, it's the turning the,
- 16:32the life around that makes such a difference.
- 16:35And these days I have a different life.
- 16:37You know, I'm, I'm older now and I look like a little old lady.
- 16:43And I don't think if you looked at me, you'd ever connect the
- 16:47person that used to lie passed out on other people's lawns to
- 16:51the person I am today. When I left my last job, I was a
- 16:56valued member of of work, Someone who was reliable, who
- 17:01did a good job, who always turned up on on time for their
- 17:04shift and could be called upon an emergency to fill in for
- 17:08another person who had gone sick at the last minute or something.
- 17:15I've been able to have overseas holidays from the person who was
- 17:19just a whisker off bankruptcy. That's a wonderful thing.
- 17:23And but these days I have the, a, a program and the a, a people
- 17:31in my life. And and you know, like I say, I
- 17:34was the loneliest person on the planet when I first came in.
- 17:38I didn't have a friend in the world.
- 17:40And, and now everyone in the program is my friend because we
- 17:47help each other, we're interested in each other and we
- 17:51talk straight, talk to each other.
- 17:54There's none of the small talk that that you tend to get in
- 18:00polite situations. We're real with each other.
- 18:04And it's a wonderful organization.
- 18:06It's saved my life and I am so grateful and I am grateful to
- 18:11the higher power too, that I discovered in these rooms.
- 18:16Good heavens, if an alcoholic, you know, I used to think that I
- 18:19ran the world. And if an Alcoholics running the
- 18:21world, no wonder it's in the the bad shape it's in.
- 18:25There had to be a power greater than myself in the world.
- 18:28And a A has enabled me to find have a relationship with a power
- 18:33greater than myself as well. So, yeah, for anyone who's got a
- 18:39problem with alcohol or thinks they might, you know, I can't, I
- 18:44can't fault a A Just give it your best shot for 30 days and
- 18:50see how your life changes. And if at the end of 30 days you
- 18:53think it's not worth it, go back to your old life.
- 18:56What have you lost? So that's probably enough from
- 19:00me. So thank you for the opportunity
- 19:03to speak and I think I'll leave it there.
- 19:07We have local meetings for the full week in the local area.
- 19:11Monday's gala meeting at 8:00. Tuesday is Elizabeth E at 8:00,
- 19:18Wednesday is Elizabeth E at 8:00, Thursday is 2 Wells at
- 19:238:00 and Friday is Salisbury at 8:00.
