- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Wednesday it is the
- 0:1627th of September and spring has sprung.
- 0:21Well, in my part of the world it has for sure.
- 0:23I don't know how you guys are going but spring is wonderful.
- 0:27But normally down here in Tasmania it's a little bit of a
- 0:29cruel joke because September arrives and you think springtime
- 0:34is here and really it's only October, November when you when
- 0:38you start to be able to shed your extra layers.
- 0:41But this year there have been some cracker warm days and that
- 0:44is good news. Well, for me, although if we
- 0:48read the news, the world is in a little bit of turmoil as the
- 0:52climate is doing naughty things that it shouldn't do.
- 0:55But all of that we're going to get to put down for the next of
- 0:59the while, as we are going to set our clocks, tune our rhythms
- 1:06to the words of our God, Holy Spirit, come well up in our
- 1:12shape, our ears, our mind and our heart as we hear these
- 1:17inspirational stories of your inspirational servants as our
- 1:22church is born. All right, friends, there is
- 1:26nothing left to do but to read. So join me as we read together.
- 1:30Act Chapter 8. Paul was one of the witnesses
- 1:45and he agreed completely with the killing of Stephen.
- 1:49A great wave of persecution began that day, sweeping over
- 1:53the church in Jerusalem, and all the believers except the
- 1:57apostles were scattered through the regions of Judea and
- 2:00Samaria. Some devout men came and buried
- 2:04Stephen with great mourning that Saul was going everywhere to
- 2:08destroy the church. He went from house to house,
- 2:12dragging out both men and women to throw them into prison.
- 2:16But the believers, who were scattered, preached the good
- 2:19news about Jesus wherever they went.
- 2:21Philip, for example, went to the city of Samaria and told the
- 2:25people there about the Messiah. Crowds listened intently to
- 2:30Philip because they were eager to hear his message and see the
- 2:33miraculous signs he did. Many evil spirits were cast out
- 2:38screaming as they left their victims, and many who had been
- 2:41paralyzed or lame or healed, so there was great joy in that
- 2:46city. A man named Simon had been a
- 2:49sorcerer there for many years, amazing the people of Samaria
- 2:53and claiming to be someone great.
- 2:56Everyone from the least to the greatest often spoke of him as
- 3:00the Great One, the power of God. They listened closer to him
- 3:05because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic.
- 3:09But now the people believed Philip's message of good news
- 3:13concerning the Kingdom of God in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 3:18As a result, many men and women were baptized.
- 3:21Then Simon himself believed and was baptized.
- 3:25He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was
- 3:28amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.
- 3:33When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria
- 3:36had accepted God's message, they sent Peter and John there.
- 3:41As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers
- 3:44to receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit had not yet come
- 3:48upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name
- 3:51of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John laid their
- 3:55hands upon the believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
- 4:00When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid
- 4:04their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this
- 4:07power. Let me have this power too, he
- 4:10exclaimed. So that when I lay my hands on
- 4:13people, they will receive the Holy Spirit.
- 4:16But Peter replied, may your money be destroyed with you for
- 4:21thinking God's gift can be bought.
- 4:24You can have no part in it, for your heart is not right with
- 4:28God. Repent of your wickedness and
- 4:30pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your
- 4:33evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter
- 4:37jealousy and are held captive by sin.
- 4:40Pray to the Lord for me. Simon exclaimed That these
- 4:44terrible things you've said won't happen to me.
- 4:47After testifying and preaching the word of the Lord in Samaria,
- 4:51Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, and they stopped in
- 4:55many Samaritan villages along the way to preach the good news.
- 5:00As for Philip, an Angel of the Lord said to him, go South Down
- 5:05the desert Rd. that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.
- 5:09So he started out, and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, A
- 5:13eunuch of great authority under the kandake, the Queen of
- 5:17Ethiopia. The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem
- 5:21to worship, and he was now returning.
- 5:23Seated in his carriage, he was reading aloud from the book of
- 5:27the prophet Isaiah. The Holy Spirit said to Philip,
- 5:31go over and walk beside the carriage.
- 5:35Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet
- 5:37Isaiah. Philip asked.
- 5:40Do you understand what you were reading?
- 5:42The man replied. How can I unless someone
- 5:44instructs me? And he urged Philip to come up
- 5:48into the carriage and sit with him.
- 5:50The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this.
- 5:53He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb is
- 5:57silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.
- 6:01He was humiliated and received no justice.
- 6:05Who can speak of his descendants, for his life was
- 6:09taken from the earth? The eunuch asked Philip, Tell
- 6:13me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?
- 6:18So, beginning with the same scripture, Philip told him the
- 6:21good news about Jesus. As they rode along, they came to
- 6:25some water, and the eunuch said, look, there's some water.
- 6:29Why can't I be baptized? He ordered the carriage to stop,
- 6:33and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
- 6:38When they came out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched
- 6:42Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again,
- 6:45but went on his way, rejoicing. Meanwhile, Philip found himself
- 6:50farther N at the town of Asatus. He preached the good news there
- 6:55and in every town along the way until he came to say, Saria,
- 7:10Holy Spirit, you are wise and present and kind and all knowing
- 7:18thank you that you reside in us and that you invite us to work
- 7:23with you in saving our brothers and sisters.
- 7:28Holy Spirit, when you prompt us, give us faith to obey, because
- 7:33when we enter situations in your service, you will give us the
- 7:38words that we need. You will not abandon us, but
- 7:43lead us so your word is shared and your Kingdom is grown.
- 7:49We just submit to you, Holy Spirit, and pray that you would
- 7:53have your way in us. We love you and we pray.
- 7:57All of this in the name of Jesus.
- 7:59Come in.
