- 0:01Father, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts that Lord,
- 0:07we have a promise from You that death is not the final say.
- 0:15We have eternity. We have you, your presence, your
- 0:21glory to enjoy forever and ever. But until then, Lord, we pray
- 0:26that our pilgrimage here on earth would be effective and
- 0:30fruitful. Lord, we don't, we don't chase
- 0:33after platforms or notoriety or recognition.
- 0:36Lord, just make us content and faithfulness.
- 0:39And may we each be absolutely convinced that we are walking in
- 0:43the center of your will. And Lord, may we know true
- 0:47contentment and longevity in that pursuit, in that
- 0:51discipline, in that calling that has been clarified to each of
- 0:54us. Lord, we pray that you would use
- 0:56this final study in Second Kings to help us draw closer to you
- 1:01and to know Your will for our lives.
- 1:03We trust that you will use it. In Jesus name we pray.
- 1:07Amen. Well, ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:09brothers and sisters, tonight marks the final installment in
- 1:12our study of the Book of Second Kings.
- 1:16And I'm sure that you can agree that this book has presented us
- 1:20a series of dramatic studies as we've been carefully observing
- 1:27the decline of a nation who had a unique relationship with God
- 1:32unlike any other nation and it's day.
- 1:38And for the first time reader, it may seem that there's nothing
- 1:41more to say after the last statement of the final verse in
- 1:46our previous study. If you don't remember, look
- 1:48quickly at verse 21 of Second Kings 25 and notice what the
- 1:53writer records the last sentence there.
- 1:57So Judah was taken into exile out of its land.
- 2:04What more do you need to say after that?
- 2:07The Babylonian conquest is complete.
- 2:10Jerusalem lies and ruins. The majority of God's people are
- 2:15now removed from the Promised Land and will endure the height
- 2:19of heavenly discipline for many decades ahead.
- 2:24What more can be said after this?
- 2:29Well, clearly the Holy Spirit has more to say.
- 2:34And as we are prepared to read this new section, I have a
- 2:36feeling that the opening verses of it will not surprise us,
- 2:41sadly. But the final part, the final
- 2:46portion might because it offers incredible encouragement to us,
- 2:53especially when we consider this being Israel's darkest hour.
- 2:59But before we get to that hopeful closing, we have to
- 3:02engage with the disappointing commentary that comes before it.
- 3:06So let's read now. Second Kings 25, beginning of
- 3:08verse 22 down to verse 24. And over the people who remained
- 3:14in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,
- 3:16had left. He appointed Gedalia the son of
- 3:20Akhiqam son of Shafan governor. Now when all the captains and
- 3:25their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gadalia
- 3:28governor, they came with their men to Gadalia and Mizpah,
- 3:32namely, Ishmael the son of Athania and Johanna, and the son
- 3:36of Karea, and Soraya the son of Tanumeth the Neathophathite, and
- 3:42Jehaziya the son of the Makatite.
- 3:46And Gadalia swore to them and their men, saying, Do not be
- 3:49afraid because of the Chaldean officials.
- 3:51Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be
- 3:55well with you. We noted last week that after
- 4:02the Babylonians came in and orchestrated their final
- 4:06deportation, they had left behind some vine dressers and
- 4:09plowmen to tend the land. But even that small remnant
- 4:15required some kind of oversight and leadership.
- 4:17Nebuchadnezzar was wise enough to recognize that.
- 4:19So what does he do? He appoints a governor.
- 4:22He raises up a man by the name of Gadalia to fulfill that role.
- 4:26Now, we don't know much about Gadalia, but there's something
- 4:29about his father and his grandfather that helps us know a
- 4:32little bit of his background in history.
- 4:35He is the son of Ari Kham. Now, Ari Kham was one of
- 4:40Josiah's top officials. We remember Josiah, the great
- 4:43reformer. He played a role in helping
- 4:47bring reform. And more than that, when you
- 4:49read Jeremiah carefully, Ahikam actually protected Jeremiah from
- 4:55being killed by the king. So this man Ahikam was a
- 4:59righteous person, and it seems like his son Gadalia was
- 5:02following in his steps. And it could be that
- 5:05Nebuchadnezzar, though a Pagan himself, recognized something
- 5:08noble about Godalia. That's why he granted him and
- 5:11appointed him as a leader in this respect.
- 5:16And Godalia's instructions to the remnant that remained
- 5:20reflects his submissiveness and his integrity.
- 5:24What did he tell the people? He said, look, don't be afraid
- 5:28of the Chaldeans. As long as we remain here and
- 5:31don't cause trouble, it will be well with you.
- 5:35He's echoing what Jeremiah had prophesied for years.
- 5:39And so we see that this man was also an ally to the prophet in
- 5:43many ways, including and what we see here with his exhortation.
- 5:49But although the Babylonians were not the ones to fear in the
- 5:52story, there is someone else, and he's not associated with the
- 5:56Chaldeans. Let's read now here in verse 25
- 6:00to verse 26. But in the seventh month,
- 6:06Ishmael, the son of Athenia, son of Eli Shama of the royal
- 6:10family, came with 10 men and struck down Gadalia and put him
- 6:14to death, along with the Jews and the Chaldeans who are with
- 6:19him at Mizpah. Then all the people, both small
- 6:23and great, and the captains of the forces, arose and went to
- 6:27Egypt, for they were afraid of the Chaldeans.
- 6:31It's hard to imagine how this can be true.
- 6:33Are you kidding me? Jerusalem has fallen, Babylon
- 6:39has conquered, thousands have died, and thousands more have
- 6:44been removed from their homes. And it hasn't been very long
- 6:49until we learn of a murder case among the remnant who are kept
- 6:54back. This is absolutely absurd.
- 7:00This is mind numbing. This is yet another case, I
- 7:06believe, that helps us make a little bit more sense of
- 7:08Jeremiah's words when he famously said that the heart is
- 7:11deceitfully wicked above all things, desperately sick.
- 7:17And he ends it by saying, who can understand it?
- 7:21Who can understand? Indeed, who can understand?
- 7:23I can't understand this. You guys have been brought so
- 7:28low and you still have it in you to kill each other.
- 7:32This is demented. This is twisted.
- 7:36This is the human heart. And we cannot fully comprehend
- 7:41just how depraved and twisted this heart really is.
- 7:47Why did this happen? Why was Gadalia assassinated?
- 7:51Well, with a little investigation we can learn
- 7:54exactly why the culprit of the assassination is who?
- 7:59A man by the name of Ishmael. Ishmael.
- 8:02Now Ishmael, according to verse 23, was among who looked back
- 8:06again. Now, when all the captains and
- 8:08their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gadalia
- 8:10governor, he's one of the captains.
- 8:13Who are these captains? Very likely some of the military
- 8:16leaders or guerrilla leaders who were successful in evading the
- 8:21Babylonian conquest and exile. So they they must have escaped.
- 8:25They must have hidden themselves.
- 8:27And when they saw that the air had cleared, the fury of Babylon
- 8:30had subsided, and new leadership was established, they come out
- 8:33of the woodworks and they make their way back to the people.
- 8:37But there's more to his background.
- 8:39Read slowly verse 25 once more. But in the seventh month,
- 8:43Ishmael, the son of Nathaniel, son of Eli Sharma of the royal
- 8:48family. If you underline your Bible,
- 8:50underline that part, what does it mean that he's of the royal
- 8:55family? What does that indicate?
- 8:59He's a descendant of David. He's from the royal line.
- 9:06This is now beginning to make sense.
- 9:08Think about it. How would you feel if you were a
- 9:11descendant of David and someone outside the royal line was
- 9:17elected and appointed to be the leader of the people who
- 9:21remained in Judah? It's easy to see how someone
- 9:26like Ishmael might have felt like he deserved to be that
- 9:29leader. He's one of the few that
- 9:32remained from David's line. And so even though Gedalia was
- 9:37not made an official king, he was a governor.
- 9:40You can see how this man, Ishmael was convinced that he
- 9:44deserved to be the leader, and it disturbed them to the core.
- 9:50What do you have here? You have selfish ambition at
- 9:54work. Read closely, read between the
- 9:57lines, look more carefully, ask more questions.
- 10:01If he's of the royal family, why do we need to know that?
- 10:04Because that's the motive behind his murderous plot.
- 10:11But there's more details. See, there's 2 verses that we
- 10:14just read. That's just a summary.
- 10:17We have a detailed account of all that took place here in
- 10:21Jeremiah's writing. And though we can't touch on
- 10:23every point, I want you to see with me how Ishmael's plan was
- 10:27exposed beforehand. It was made known and it shows
- 10:33us a little bit more of the behind the scenes of why this
- 10:35happened. Let's go to Jeremiah 40 now this
- 10:39is quite interesting. Jeremiah 40 and verse 13.
- 10:53Now Johannan, or Johannan the son of Korea and all the leaders
- 10:59of the forces in the open country, came to Gadalia at
- 11:02Mizpah and said to him, Do you know that Balis, the king of the
- 11:06Ammonites, has sent Ishmael the son of Nathaniel to take your
- 11:10life? But Gadalia the son of Akhiq
- 11:14Khan would not believe them. Interesting.
- 11:18So now we are introduced to another man by the name of
- 11:21Johanan. He's there in Second Kings 25,
- 11:23and he is also one of the captains perhaps of a different
- 11:25band of soldiers that are mercenaries.
- 11:29And he somehow uncovers Ishmael's plan to assassinate
- 11:34Gadalia. And so he approaches Gadalia
- 11:36faithfully. He says, look, you have to
- 11:37understand this man wants to kill you, and he was actually
- 11:42hired by the Ammonites to do it. Now here's my question.
- 11:47Why would the Ammonites be interested in the death of
- 11:50Gadalia? I'm actually asking, does
- 11:51anybody have an idea why would the Ammonites be interested?
- 11:56What does this have to do with them?
- 12:02I think the best answer is that we saw earlier how the
- 12:06surrounding nations recognize earlier in our study of second
- 12:09kings, how they recognize the the, the very dangerous and
- 12:14concerning uprising and, and powerful entity Babylon was
- 12:19becoming. And so they attempt on many
- 12:22occasions to create a coalition to try to figure out how they
- 12:25can push back and resist this new empire.
- 12:30And I believe the Ammonites understood that Gedalia's
- 12:33willingness to work with the Babylonians undermine their
- 12:36efforts to try to keep them in place.
- 12:41And so it's likely that Ishmael, in knowing this, actually
- 12:46approached the Ammonites and said, look, I'll take care of
- 12:49Gadalia. Yeah, he's a puppet.
- 12:52Let's get rid of him because he's obviously going to be an
- 12:54obstacle in our attempt to try to hold Babylon back.
- 13:00And so he probably got a price for it.
- 13:04And at the same time, this would serve his personal interest.
- 13:08We have a profound spiritual lesson before us, brothers and
- 13:11sisters. You have now a foreign entity,
- 13:16an enemy of Israel and Judah, working through a descendant of
- 13:22David. To kill someone who is innocent,
- 13:26to kill someone who is actually obeying God and submitting to
- 13:31Babylon. Jealousy and selfish ambition
- 13:38opens the door for Satan to enter and 'cause civil war among
- 13:43God's people. Every time you think that's an
- 13:50exaggeration, I'm here to tell you that the New Testament says
- 13:53it in a very plain and obvious way.
- 13:56Go to James chapter 3. We have looked at these verses
- 13:59throughout our study of kings more than once.
- 14:01You know why? Because we've seen jealousy and
- 14:03selfish ambition at play and more than one occasion.
- 14:09And I just find it amazing that this is one of the final lessons
- 14:11that God want God wants to give us in our conclusion of this
- 14:14study. Look at James chapter 3 and
- 14:17verse 14. He's speaking to many Christians
- 14:21in different areas and notice what he says.
- 14:24But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your
- 14:27hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.
- 14:32This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but it's
- 14:35earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish
- 14:42ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile
- 14:47practice. End Quote.
- 14:50Including murder. Including murder.
- 14:55Want to talk about vile practice?
- 14:57Murder is on that list. But did you notice how the word
- 15:01demonic is sandwiched between the two references to jealousy
- 15:05and selfish ambition? It's mentioned there in verse 14
- 15:09and in verse 16. And what's tucked between
- 15:12demonic? So it's not an exaggeration to
- 15:17say that where pride and self entitlement is harbored and
- 15:20justified, not resisted, not fought against, not brought
- 15:23before God in His presence, you make a way for demonic activity
- 15:33to intensify and to destroy anything that is good, anything
- 15:39that is holy, anything that is righteous like Gadalia
- 15:43represents. Brothers and sisters, be careful
- 15:46of these things in your heart and in my heart, because if you
- 15:50let them have free range, it will ravage a marriage, it will
- 15:55disintegrate any friendship. It can shut the doors of a
- 15:59church until nothing remains. I mean, Israel has already been
- 16:07brought so low. And I mean Israel.
- 16:09I'm talking about Judah specifically.
- 16:12And yet because of Ishmael's selfish ambition, he brought it
- 16:17even lower. I mean, how much lower can you
- 16:20get? Everything's in rubble.
- 16:21Everything is still burning, and yet you still have it in you for
- 16:26your own sake, for your own name, for your own ego, to
- 16:30destroy it further. It's hideous.
- 16:34It's it's terrifying and it's something that we should be
- 16:38warned about. Here's what moved me.
- 16:41One of the final lessons in our study of Second Kings is a
- 16:44warning about jealousy and selfish ambition.
- 16:49Kill it fast about it. Starve it out of your heart if
- 16:55you have to. Come before God and take time
- 16:58away from everything else until that thing is eradicated from
- 17:01your soul because it won't stay in your heart.
- 17:04It will make a way for Satan to come in and do things that you
- 17:08never thought was possible. And there's more that can be
- 17:12said about Gadalia and his refusal to believe the report.
- 17:17We can spend a lot of time there.
- 17:18Like leadership can't afford to be naive.
- 17:21That's one lesson. He refused to believe that
- 17:24Ishmael was capable of killing him.
- 17:28If you're a leader in this place, you got to be more
- 17:29discerning than that. You got to be more careful than
- 17:32that. You got to be willing to
- 17:33investigate even those that you you think are not capable of
- 17:36doing certain things. And he refused to do that.
- 17:40But we have to move on and look at what's mentioned here in the
- 17:44rest of Second Kings. Come back with me.
- 17:48Look again at verse 26 of Second Kings 25.
- 17:51After Gadalia's murdered, we read then all the people, both
- 17:54small and great, and the captains of the forces arose and
- 17:58went to Egypt, but they were afraid of the Chaldeans.
- 18:02Egypt. What's going on here?
- 18:09Here's what's happening. So remember we read about that
- 18:11man who reported to Gaddalia what Ishmael was up to Johanna.
- 18:16Well, when you read later on in Jeremiah, he actually scares
- 18:19Ishmael away. Ishmael attempts to take the
- 18:22remnant captive and to bring him to the Ammonites.
- 18:24And who comes to the rescue? This individual.
- 18:28And so he keeps the remnant. He brings him back home, but
- 18:32everybody now is afraid of the Babylonians.
- 18:34Why? Because the man that
- 18:36Nebuchadnezzar had appointed was just assassinated.
- 18:39So you can imagine what they're thinking, can imagine the fear.
- 18:43Oh, Nebuchadnezzar, if he hears this, he's going to take us all
- 18:45the way now. And So what did they decide to
- 18:47do? OK, let's just go to Egypt.
- 18:50He won't come to Egypt. Let's flee there.
- 18:53Let's stay there for a little while and then we'll come back
- 18:54to our hometown. And what's so amazing?
- 18:57I mean, if you want to look at this in detail, go to Jeremiah
- 18:5941 to chapter 43. You don't have to turn there,
- 19:01but read it on your own time. They actually approached
- 19:03Jeremiah. They say, Jeremiah, can you ask
- 19:06God if this is his will for us to go to Egypt?
- 19:09And Jeremiah says, OK, give me some time to pray.
- 19:12A few days go by. Jeremiah gets a word from the
- 19:14Lord and tells the leaders and the remnant don't trust God,
- 19:17stay put, He'll take care of you.
- 19:19Babylon will do nothing. What do you think the people
- 19:22did? You're a liar.
- 19:24They actually called Jeremiah a liar.
- 19:27And so this man now who seemed to be righteous, I mean, he
- 19:31reported Ishmael's plot. He actually rescued the remnant.
- 19:34Now he leads the effort of bringing the remnant into Egypt,
- 19:38and he even forces Jeremiah to go, yes, Jeremiah had some
- 19:42ministry time in Egypt. And so while they're in Egypt,
- 19:46God gives Jeremiah a word. And here's the summary.
- 19:49Hey, Jeremiah, tell everybody who went down to Egypt that
- 19:52they're going to die in Egypt and that they will never return
- 19:56to their homeland. That's their punishment for not
- 19:59trusting in me. This is heavy.
- 20:03This is disheartening. It you almost feel like when is
- 20:05this going to end? Well, it's almost over.
- 20:09And as deeply disturbing this is, thankfully it doesn't end
- 20:15there. Look now at verse 27.
- 20:19This is where we're ending because we have no choice.
- 20:22It's ending here. Let's read the rest of it, shall
- 20:25we? This is going to be a much
- 20:28shorter Bible study because we have a quiz coming up.
- 20:33And in the 37th year of the exile of Jehoiakim, king of
- 20:37Judah, in the 12th month, on the 27th day of the month, evil
- 20:42Merodach, king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign,
- 20:45graciously freed Jehoiakim king of Judah from prison.
- 20:51And he spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat above the seats
- 20:55of the kings who are with him in Babylon.
- 20:57So joy I can put off his prison garments.
- 21:00And every day of his life he dined regularly at the King's
- 21:03table. And for his allowance a regular
- 21:06allowance was given him by the king according to his daily
- 21:09needs as long as he lived. A little bit of a strange way of
- 21:16wrapping things up, don't you think?
- 21:20Before we try to make sense of this, let's deal with the facts
- 21:23that are clear. The Holy Spirit fast forwards in
- 21:26time and brings us into Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar is no longer on
- 21:30the throne, His descendant, evil Merodach is.
- 21:33And what this man chooses to do in the first year of his reign
- 21:37should shock us. He removes one of the last kings
- 21:43who went into exile, takes off his prison guards, elevates him
- 21:48to a prominent position, allows him to regularly dine at the
- 21:52royal table, and takes care of him plentifully for the rest of
- 21:58his life until his dying day. No explanation is given, and
- 22:05that's intentional without notice.
- 22:09As you come to the end of this record, it's as though the Holy
- 22:11Spirit wants to stun the reader by providing a final
- 22:17demonstration of grace, by not just saying it, but by
- 22:22demonstrating it by providentially working in a
- 22:25different country altogether. The very instrument of judgement
- 22:31now becomes the means of relief and grace to a king who
- 22:35represented the people. You see, what's happening here
- 22:37is that God is providing a message of hope for the people
- 22:42of God that after all the things that they've done, after their
- 22:46nauseating disobedience that we just saw in the preceding
- 22:49verses, he wants to reveal that he is absolutely faithful to his
- 22:54promise to David. I have not forgotten my covenant
- 22:57with David. And he also wants to show in a
- 23:00very practical way that he is intensely merciful and kind.
- 23:08And as you and I look at this, we can realize that message even
- 23:12more by the wider context. What's the very last word of
- 23:19Second Kings in the ESV? It's the word lived.
- 23:22If you have any other translation, especially a word
- 23:24for word translation, it's the word life.
- 23:28That's the last word that we have in Second Kings life.
- 23:31Does anybody remember how Second Kings begins?
- 23:35Go to chapter 1, verse one. I'll wait for you to get there.
- 23:48After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.
- 23:58So the very first statement of this book contains the word
- 24:01death, and the very last word is life.
- 24:07What's the point? God can rewrite your story even
- 24:15though your history, your background, is riddled with
- 24:17death, darkness, perversion, cycles of evil and disobedience,
- 24:23indifference to the things of God, callous to the warnings
- 24:27around you. He can change the ending.
- 24:33The punctuation mark of your life can be life, not death, if
- 24:40you allow him to. So I'm putting these thoughts
- 24:46together midweek, and here's the thought that comes to me.
- 24:53Remember, there are three kings who go into exile.
- 24:57Jehoiah, Kim, Jehoiah, Kin or kin.
- 25:02Who's the last one? Zedekiah. 3 deportations, one
- 25:08for each. Now you can make a case that the
- 25:12first one, Joya Kim, didn't actually get all the way to
- 25:15Babylon, though he was arrested and though he was chained, and
- 25:18though he was brought, some argued that he died along the
- 25:21way, but he was still planned to go to Babylon.
- 25:27And here's the thing that I was thinking about.
- 25:29Out of all the three, why was this undeserved kindness granted
- 25:33to the middle one? Why not the first?
- 25:38Why not Zedekiah? I'm meditating, I'm thinking,
- 25:42I'm comparing. Then it hits me.
- 25:45Jehoiah Kin did something that the first and the Last King did
- 25:50not do. Can I show it to you?
- 25:52Go to Second Kings 24 verse 12, and Jehoiah Kin, the king of
- 26:04Judah, gave himself up to the king of Babylon himself and his
- 26:11mother and his servants and his officials and his palace
- 26:14officials. The king of Babylon took him
- 26:16prisoner in the eighth year of his reign.
- 26:18You see it, the first king, Joya Kim, did not give himself up.
- 26:25Zedekiah tried to escape the Chaldeans and they paid a price
- 26:30for it. The main difference, though each
- 26:32of them are rebel in their own way, is that the middle king
- 26:36surrendered. He surrendered which was in
- 26:41alignment with God's will surrender to Babylon.
- 26:44Stop resisting, stop thinking and believing the lies that
- 26:49you're going to be rescued from this agent of judgement.
- 26:55Let's put all this together. Do you want God to rewrite your
- 26:57story? Are you sick and tired of sin?
- 27:00Are you? Are you deflated yet?
- 27:05Because the trajectory of your life is disaster?
- 27:11It has been, and it looks like that's where you're going.
- 27:15You have to give up. You have to give up.
- 27:20You have to surrender. That's the only way God can
- 27:23rewrite the story. You can't hold on to your pride.
- 27:27You can't hold on to your stubbornness.
- 27:29You can't hold on to your lust. You can't hold on to that person
- 27:32that God told you so many times to get rid of.
- 27:35You can't hold on to the occupation that you know
- 27:38dishonors the name of Jesus Christ.
- 27:39You can't hold on to anything God says.
- 27:41Give up and expect God to rewrite your story.
- 27:44It'll never happen. Only when you completely
- 27:50surrender do you have the possibility of God changing the
- 27:56script of your life. So it's really up to you.
- 28:06And that's one of the last messages.
- 28:07In fact, you can say it's the very last message of Second
- 28:09Kings. Give up.
- 28:15Give up not because you're just told to and there's no promise
- 28:19on the other side, because there is so much promise you got to
- 28:24imagine, but that's what the people reading this originally
- 28:27and for all time we're supposed to, we're supposed to put
- 28:29together. Why Jehoiakim?
- 28:31Because he gave up. And look at how God was kind to
- 28:33him. He even used an enemy to be kind
- 28:35to him. What about Zedekiah?
- 28:41Most likely died in Babylon, a blind man.
- 28:44What about Jehoiakim? He died a donkey's death, and it
- 28:48received a donkey's burial, according to Jeremiah.
- 28:54So here's our reigning Second kings.
- 28:56Do you have anything you need to give up?
- 28:59Have you been here since Second Kings 1 and you're still holding
- 29:02on to that sin and you haven't learned a thing about these
- 29:05kings? And what happens when you live
- 29:06in disobedience? Have you not been moved once by
- 29:09God's incredible mercy from one scenario to the next, one
- 29:16administration after the other? If your heart is not moved by
- 29:22what we see here in these final verses, God help you.
- 29:27This is unbelievable. And the same God who did this
- 29:30for this king is the same God who can do it for you, but you
- 29:33have to surrender. How do I know if I surrendered?
- 29:39You know, no, I don't know. OK, let me help you.
- 29:46Do some inventory, examine your own life.
- 29:49Actually ask these questions. If God were to ask me to get rid
- 29:52of this, would I be able to let go of it?
- 29:55Go every over every compartment of your existence, everything
- 30:02believer, even your ministry, even good things, and have an
- 30:08honest conversation with your own heart.
- 30:11If God tells me to give this up, am I willing to give it up?
- 30:15If you can't Ding, Ding, Ding, my friend, you have identified
- 30:19an idol. But if you can say, Lord, all
- 30:24that I am and all that I have is yours.
- 30:28But if there's anything that I'm blinded to, there's anything
- 30:30that I'm not aware of, if you were to highlight to me and tell
- 30:33me I need to repent of it, I will repent of it.
- 30:35That's how you know you've given up to the Lordship of Jesus
- 30:39Christ and you are promised way more than whatever your little
- 30:44plan, your little blueprint promise you.
- 30:48Oh, I want to just say it one more time.
- 30:51Let tonight really be the turning point as you see this
- 30:56gracious example provided to you and me to surrender truly and
- 31:02completely. Well, we thank you for Second
- 31:04Kings. What an amazing book.
- 31:07As dark as it has been, it ends with life.
- 31:15And Lord, if there's one person in this place who's clinging to
- 31:20death because they're deceived or they're afraid, or, or, or
- 31:25whatever the reason may be, we ask, Lord, that you would use
- 31:28these truths to shatter any of those shackles and that they
- 31:35would know true freedom. Thank you that you are a God
- 31:39filled with hope. Thank you that no matter what
- 31:41kind of a mess that we've made of our lives, like Jehovah kin,
- 31:45you can change it all. You can do a miracle with our
- 31:49mess. And though we believe that you
- 31:52are the same God that we are studying and we have been
- 31:54studying week after week. Lord, may our hearts come alive
- 31:59and Thanksgiving for how you've spoken to us through 1st and 2nd
- 32:03Kings. May you receive all the glory, O
- 32:05Lord, and how we apply these truths and share them with
- 32:09others so they too may surrender to the kingship of Jesus Christ.
- 32:13You are All in all. And Lord, we in a fresh way tell
- 32:17you, we give up, we give up. Have everything, you're worthy
- 32:24of it. In Jesus name we pray, Amen and
- 32:28Amen. If you need to stay seated, you
- 32:31stay seated. If you want to stand, you can
- 32:33stand. But let's wholeheartedly worship
- 32:34the Lord. The study is not over yet, but
- 32:37let's just take this moment to engage with God directly before
- 32:41we do what we're planning to do next.
- 32:42So however you are comfortable, as long as you're not
- 32:45distracting, just engage with these truths and seek God and
- 32:48pour out your heart to him. He's here, He, he's hearing us
- 32:52praise him. Come on up.
- 32:53Thank you.
