- 0:02Hello and welcome to the Christian Business Growth Podcast.
- 0:05Today I'm here with Steve Henry over there on the right side of me and everything we're going to be recording today.
- 0:11And Steve, tell us how you got started as a real estate agent.
- 0:15What got you into real estate?
- 0:17well, that's way back in the day.
- 0:20eh
- 0:22We won't tell anyone.
- 0:24Yeah, wow.
- 0:26was 1979.
- 0:28Wow.
- 0:29I was doing bartending at the time and my father was a realtor at that moment and had his own office.
- 0:39And some of the bartenders that were with me got real excited about the chance of getting and becoming a real estate agent, you know, that that was a real job and made sense.
- 0:52And I was like,
- 0:58right?
- 1:46Right.
- 1:46It's all about perspective, isn't it?
- 1:48Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, at that time.
- 1:51the rates just literally went up by the month.
- 1:55mean, they just, it was, and they would get really high during the summer, which never made sense to me because that's when it would slow everything back down.
- 2:05But you can imagine how difficult it was at that time when we were having, you know, 15, 14, 16 % interest rates.
- 2:15were just.
- 2:16really, really outrageous.
- 2:19somehow or another I managed and the rates eventually did get down.
- 2:28President Reagan got into office and the rates started coming down.
- 2:33That's when we got below 10 % and we were like going, yes, that made a huge difference.
- 2:40People were able to buy a house affordably and kind of just made sense.
- 2:46You know, I was a Christian during that time.
- 2:51You know, I've been a Christian pretty much all my life.
- 2:54Went through some times where I was a little bit agnostic, I guess.
- 3:01I just didn't really get involved and didn't want to, you know, step on anybody's toes or whatever.
- 3:10But after about 1981, 82,
- 3:16Maybe even in 83, I uh became a member of the First Baptist Church downtown, got baptized.
- 3:25That's when I really feel like I got a, uh had a relationship with Jesus Christ.
- 3:33And that really laid in my heart.
- 3:35You got a question?
- 3:36Help me understand.
- 3:37how'd you go from being an agnostic to getting into Christianity?
- 3:41What was that process like for you?
- 3:42What kind of what through your mind?
- 3:44Well, uh I went with my uh wife at the time, uh who had been a lifetime member down there.
- 3:53And I listened to uh Dr.
- 3:56Wally Amos Criswell, who was the lead pastor down there at the time.
- 4:01uh And uh Zig Ziglar was also uh a group leader down there.
- 4:07So we went to his class.
- 4:09And Zig was amazing.
- 4:11He kept
- 4:13You know, he kept the fire burning behind him.
- 4:17But Wally Amos had some messages that just got to my heart and made a difference.
- 4:25And I think that's where I really established a relationship and realized that you can't really be a Christian, a real Christian, you know, unless you believe and have that
- 4:38relationship.
- 4:40that I think that's that's
- 4:43where I began.
- 4:45Right, let me, I want to dig in just a little bit.
- 4:47What was the emotions you were going through?
- 4:49Like what was your thought process or how do you feel about it that made that transition?
- 4:54You said it was a lot that you went through.
- 4:56What kind of things was going through your head?
- 4:58It'd be interesting to hear.
- 4:59Good question.
- 5:00Because, you know, initially, you know, like said, I was agnostic.
- 5:05I didn't want to, you know, say something that wasn't true.
- 5:10you know, I somewhat believed the Bible, but I hadn't read it yet.
- 5:15You know, I hadn't really gotten there.
- 5:17But as I started listening and started reading the word, it became a part of and I started going, you know,
- 5:29with all of the uh technology, the more that we as humans know, the more I realized that there has to be a God.
- 5:43There has to be a God that put all this together.
- 5:47This technology, this complex network of people, uh microscopic organisms all the way up to
- 5:57you know, magnificent stars in the universe.
- 6:00It's all created.
- 6:03And I said, you know, there's no reason he couldn't send his one and only begotten son for the purpose of creating a person, man, child to be an example for us.
- 6:20And that's when I realized, you know, hey, there's nothing else that makes more sense in the world.
- 6:28than to know the Word of God and to follow Jesus Christ as the example.
- 6:34That's great.
- 6:35how, does that fit into your business that that Christian faith?
- 6:38How does that tie into your business?
- 6:40Because one of things I admire about you, let me let me pause for just a sec.
- 6:43One the things I admire about you is how you collect friends forever.
- 6:46You've got people that have known you since you were a little one.
- 6:49And you're still friends with those people that just that's something I find admirable because so many people they're so quick to move and go and everything but you just hold on
- 6:57to people.
- 6:57Mm-hmm.
- 6:59Well, yeah, there was a time in my life where, you know, I had about three friends and those were the people I hung with and that's all that really mattered in my life.
- 7:09But I started realizing everybody else around me, Lyle, has so much to offer and so much to give and teach me.
- 7:22And if I could teach them what I know,
- 7:25then it's a mutual deal.
- 7:28I mean, I still have a number of friends that I knew in kindergarten for crying out loud, you know, and we still connect today.
- 7:39You know, I have a big family out in Georgia and we still connect and you know, it's just, know, we really need relationships and that's what kind of developed the uh
- 7:55desire to have the business form is that the more relationships that you can create and establish in your life, the more connections, uh the closer to God, the more influence you
- 8:09can be on other people, just makes a huge difference.
- 8:14So go ahead and invite my guest.
- 8:19Sorry about that guys, I got some dogs out here.
- 8:22That's okay.
- 8:23ah Going back to the question, so how does God then influence your business?
- 8:30God influences me every day, you because I, you know, there's a praise in the Bible that says, pray without ceasing.
- 8:41on just a moment.
- 8:43Ellie, come here.
- 8:45Here we go.
- 8:46Come here.
- 8:47Here we go.
- 8:48Come here.
- 8:49Sorry about that.
- 8:51Come here.
- 8:51Come here.
- 8:52Come here.
- 8:54Let me show the gang who we got here.
- 8:58Come here.
- 8:58It is.
- 9:00This is the barker.
- 9:02Yeah, she's the barker.
- 9:03We're going to try to tone her down.
- 9:07So anyway, back to your question.
- 9:11is my guide.
- 9:14I pray every day from the time I wake up, I bring him into my thoughts and into everything I'm planning.
- 9:24And I say, is this something I should do?
- 9:29God, tell me yes or no if this makes sense.
- 9:35Should I make this decision today or should I stand back and avoid?
- 9:44Because we are all tempted to do the wrong thing.
- 9:50Man is a broken animal.
- 9:57We have to have guidance and have the right leadership.
- 10:02so, you know, Jesus Christ is my leader.
- 10:06ah God is the source of all everything I do.
- 10:13Although sometimes, as we all have that flaw, we tend to step away from God for a little bit and listen to the...
- 10:26the left or the Satan's side and we go the wrong way, we make the wrong decisions.
- 10:34And so that can happen, but that's why we have ah repentance because when we do make that decision and we acknowledge it, God will forgive us.
- 10:47Yeah, we stumble, we don't have to fall, right?
- 10:49That's right.
- 10:50That's right.
- 10:51You when you're a baby, you fall when you're first getting up and learning to walk.
- 10:55But, you know, you don't quit walking.
- 10:58Right.
- 10:58Yeah, and I love the way you're talking about prayer.
- 11:01To you, prayer is a conversation.
- 11:03Some people think you have to pause and close your eyes or you have to record a prayer, you know, the same thing every time.
- 11:11But to you, prayer is a deeper conversation with God.
- 11:13And it sounds like you're using God as your CEO, literally asking Him to guide every step of the way.
- 11:19Amen, amen.
- 11:21And you know, it's like a friend, you know, you you he is a friend of mine.
- 11:26Yeah, I can.
- 11:28I can reach out to him in prayer and and ask for his opinion and sit back and listen and he will instruct me.
- 11:38And yeah, it's a it's a relationship while uh I.
- 11:46I can't imagine not having.
- 11:48that as a guide or a leader in my life.
- 11:52I would just be totally, it would be a totally messed up world on my part.
- 11:59And for someone who's listening that they don't really, they've prayed, but they don't ever quote unquote hear from God, tell us what that's like for you.
- 12:06What is it like to hear from God?
- 12:07What does that look like in your life?
- 12:10Wow.
- 12:11Wow.
- 12:13You know, I want to tell you something.
- 12:18And this kind of leads back to the business form a little bit because you and I built this thing back.
- 12:25started, you and I started together in about 2010.
- 12:28And, you know, initially we started in 2007, whatever, and built this thing from, you know, five people to 10 to 12 to 20, and then back down to five, you know, just kind of a
- 12:42working deal.
- 12:43and and um
- 13:10and having an influence.
- 13:11mean, you and I and your technology skills uh are incredibly oh worth what we have there.
- 13:24today we have between 30, 30 and 40 people on a regular basis.
- 13:31And we've off into two different groups and possibly another two or three coming on board.
- 13:37It's amazing to watch.
- 13:41And for those who are listening who don't know what that is real quick, we started a Christian business networking group.
- 13:47It's not fee based.
- 13:48It's not industry specific, but it's here in the Dallas area that specifically to encourage, edify and educate other Christians, which is what this kind of podcast was born
- 13:58out of.
- 13:58So appreciate what you've done and the heart that you put behind that.
- 14:02To me, that's very powerful.
- 14:05Thank you.
- 14:05Thank you.
- 14:06It's been a lot of fun.
- 14:08you know, I get nervous before every meeting, but as soon as the door opens and people start coming in, I'm like, so good to see you.
- 14:18So good to have you here with us.
- 14:21And, you know, everybody is upbeat.
- 14:24And then when at the end of the day, they don't want to leave, you know, they're going to stay and connect and reach out and hear about everybody else.
- 14:34It just is such a blessing.
- 14:37It's such a blessing.
- 14:38And there's something powerful about seeing two Christian business owners that are in the same industry, stop and pray for one another's business.
- 14:45I mean, there's some powerful things happen there.
- 14:47Yeah, Tuesday, Tuesday, I missed it.
- 14:52there was three or four people had their arms around each other and were just had their heads bowed and were praying for something specific.
- 15:01I didn't get into the prayer that specifically, but it was such a blessing to say this.
- 15:07You can feel comfortable doing that right here.
- 15:12You don't have to be ashamed.
- 15:15There's nothing to be ashamed about when you have a prayer.
- 15:20a prayer is a blessing.
- 15:22And everybody should see that.
- 15:25Yeah, and I want to encourage anybody who's listening, if you're kind of a solo entrepreneur, you don't have a lot of entrepreneurs around you, find some Christians in
- 15:32business and just meet them for lunch once a month.
- 15:35Just connect with them, pray for one another, hold each other accountable.
- 15:38You wouldn't not believe how powerful it is when you come together and you can pray for one another.
- 15:44You can hold each other accountable and just let God start to work in you.
- 15:48So on that note, God works in us and through our business, because we're called into business.
- 15:53What are some tips you might have for someone who wants to grow their business?
- 15:56What's something you tell them to encourage their business?
- 15:59That's a good point.
- 16:01Basically, again, I started back in 79 and uh I wasn't a strong Christian at that particular time, but I grew.
- 16:12I think uh as I had confidence and I had a relationship with Christ, I became unashamed to profess Christ in my business and tell anybody that I worked for or with
- 16:29that Christ was my guidance and I learned to pray with my clients.
- 16:37And that was amazing.
- 16:39mean, just to people, it's hard to explain until you do it.
- 16:45People have issues with buying a home or whatever it is that you're doing in business.
- 16:51Your job is to give them uh confidence in you and have trust.
- 16:59Trust is a critical thing.
- 17:01They can't trust you.
- 17:02They're not gonna do business with you.
- 17:04And so that's very important that you establish trust.
- 17:09anybody that can sit down and confidently pray about that person's life and whatever it is that's holding them back or whatever will give them peace and give them comfort and it
- 17:26will help build trust.
- 17:28and what you have to offer.
- 17:30When you're praying for someone, you're truly seeking to help serve them.
- 17:34You're truly seeking their needs.
- 17:36You're not trying to sell them and your brain goes into totally different mode.
- 17:40If you can help them take the next step in whatever your industry is, when you're praying for them, your brain goes into how can I help this person get better, do better?
- 17:50And the person feels that, the person senses that even if they're not a Christian, even if they don't want to pray with you and that's totally okay.
- 17:57The fact that you're doing it,
- 17:58your heart and your mind connect and God uses his Holy Spirit to talk to those people as well.
- 18:03And I do want to point out real quick, ah as Christians, it's okay to say you're a Christian in business because people will see that and some people won't want to do
- 18:12business with you and that's okay too.
- 18:14because they don't understand.
- 18:16Exactly.
- 18:17And it's all about how you live your life out.
- 18:20Because there are some people who are very negative Christians and put other people down.
- 18:23We don't want to be those Christians.
- 18:25We want to be people like Jesus, who sinners loved Jesus.
- 18:29Sinners loved being around Jesus because his presence, his peace, his love overcame where he was.
- 18:35So as we're wrapping up here, Steve, how can someone get in touch with you?
- 18:40If they want to, if they're in the Dallas area, you're a real estate agent, they're in Dallas area and they want to do business with you.
- 18:45As an agent, where should they go?
- 18:47What should they do?
- 18:48Well, appreciate that.
- 18:50First and foremost, my probably easiest connected with through a text.
- 18:57You can reach me on my telephone number, which is Errico 214-908-9188.
- 19:00oh
- 19:05And you're okay as putting that on the screen,
- 19:08Yeah, 214-908-9188.
- 19:10Or you can reach me at through an email, which is also very good.
- 19:15And that's a fairly easy but long email.
- 19:18It's steve at stevehendryhomes.net.
- 19:25And those are the two ways to connect.
- 19:28You can find me on LinkedIn.
- 19:30You can find me on Facebook.
- 19:32oh
- 19:34think I'm on Instagram, but those are the main ways.
- 19:39Okay, good deal.
- 19:40And they'll look for Steve Henry, that's H E N D R Y.
- 19:43Those of you who are looking at help.
- 19:45And if you're in the Dallas area, you need help with real estate agent, or you need somebody to pray for you because he is a prayerful person.
- 19:50And if you're in the Dallas area, and you want to join us at one of our local meetings, you can go to dfwchristianbusiness.com.
- 19:57There'll be a calendar on there to tell you when we're meeting in our different locations.
- 20:00There are three different locations we're meeting in.
- 20:02Steve and I coordinate the Richardson location, but there's a location in Fort Worth and one in Frisco as well.
- 20:09So we welcome you to come join us.
- 20:11Any final words you want to end us up with Steve?
- 20:14Let's see.
- 20:16just, you know, you can call me with any questions you have about the market.
- 20:22You know, if you want to know how much your house is worth or you want to know just what, you know, is this the right time to do something?
- 20:29You know, this is a good time to reach out and ask me that question.
- 20:34We can find out.
- 20:36But more importantly, the one thing I want to emphasize to everybody is
- 20:45Get a relationship with Christ, whatever it takes.
- 20:50You start somewhere, but that relationship is everything.
- 20:56Your life will change dramatically.
- 21:02Thank you for that, Steve.
- 21:03We appreciate your time today.
- 21:05it's been fun.
- 21:05It's good to see you and look forward to doing this again one day.
- 21:09All right.
