- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the 3rd of September, it's
- 0:15Tuesday, and I'm so glad to have your company because you and I
- 0:20are going to continue reading through this book of Second
- 0:24Corinthians, which is a strange little character.
- 0:27It is just one sent into such a divisive and difficult
- 0:32community, this church and Corinth.
- 0:35Oh yes, churches are great. But churches can also be hard
- 0:38work, can't they? This collection of people who
- 0:41love Jesus sometimes can find it hard to love each other.
- 0:44I'm sure we've all had experience of that at one time
- 0:48or another in our lives. And Paul speaks directly into
- 0:51that as he calls them to put the past behind them and to move
- 0:56forward. And maybe there's something in
- 0:59this for you and I as we listen to this.
- 1:01Maybe we can we can put ourselves in the situation and
- 1:04perhaps a conflict or a challenge that we've been
- 1:06facing. Ah, yes, Holy Spirit, you have
- 1:10truth in every word to communicate with us.
- 1:13We pray that your truth would resonate in our hearts as we
- 1:16hear these words of Paul. All right, friends, let us do
- 1:21it. Let us read together Second
- 1:22Corinthians chapter 2. So I decided that I would not
- 1:36bring you grief with another painful visit.
- 1:39For if I cause you grief, who will make me glad?
- 1:43Certainly not someone I have grieved.
- 1:46That is why I wrote to you as I did, so that when I do come, I
- 1:50won't be grieved by the very ones who ought to give me the
- 1:54greatest joy. Surely you all know that my joy
- 1:59comes from your being joyful. I wrote that letter in great
- 2:03anguish, with a troubled heart and many tears.
- 2:07I didn't want to grieve you, but I wanted to let you know how
- 2:11much love I have for you. I'm not overstating it when I
- 2:15say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more
- 2:20than he hurt me. Most of you opposed him, and
- 2:24that was punishment enough. Now, however, it is time to
- 2:28forgive and comfort him, Otherwise he may be overcome by
- 2:32discouragement. So I urge you now to reaffirm
- 2:36your love for him. I wrote to you as I did, to test
- 2:40you and to see if you would fully comply with my
- 2:43instructions. When you forgive this man, I
- 2:47forgive him too. And when I forgive whatever
- 2:50needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ's authority for your
- 2:54benefit, so that Satan will not outsmart us, for we are familiar
- 2:59with his evil schemes. When I came to the city of Troas
- 3:04to preach the good news of Christ, the Lord opened a door
- 3:08of opportunity for me. But I had no Peace of Mind
- 3:12because my dear brother Titus hadn't yet arrived with a report
- 3:16from you. So I said goodbye and went on to
- 3:19Macedonia to find him. But thank God He has made us his
- 3:26captives and continues to lead us along in Christ's triumphal
- 3:31procession. Now He uses us to spread the
- 3:34knowledge of Christ everywhere. Like a sweet perfume.
- 3:39Our lives are a Christ like fragrance rising up to God.
- 3:44But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are
- 3:47being saved and by those who are perishing.
- 3:50To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death
- 3:54and doom. But to those who are being
- 3:57saved, we are a life giving perfume.
- 4:01And who is adequate for such a task as this?
- 4:05You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for
- 4:09personal profit. We preach the Word of God with
- 4:13sincerity and with Christ's authority, knowing that God is
- 4:17watching us. Oh Lord, I pray that we would
- 4:30indeed be a sweet perfume, that us as transformed people might
- 4:37live differently, might live in a way that includes a way that
- 4:41doesn't exclude, a way that lifts up in a way that blesses
- 4:47in a way that forgives, in a way that loves.
- 4:51So that as people encounter us, they encounter you and the
- 4:56sweetness of your presence. And in order for us to be these
- 5:01people, to be your ambassadors, we are going to need your help.
- 5:05Holy Spirit, please continue to transform us from the inside
- 5:10out. Wash away our broken, sinful
- 5:14human condition and replace it with your holiness and your
- 5:19perfection. And although we'll never attain
- 5:22that this side of eternity, we hope to become ever closer to
- 5:27being a real presence of your Kingdom in our lives.
- 5:34Come Holy Spirit, we ask all of this in the name of Jesus.
- 5:39Amen.
