- 0:00Speaker 1: Yes, this is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots
- 0:09Speaker 1: Training Camp Cast is your source for all the news
- 0:12Speaker 1: from Patriots training Camp. Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:18Speaker 1: have you covered what I miss yesterday? Now here to
- 0:20Speaker 1: review today's practice? The writers of Patriots dot com, Well,
- 0:24Speaker 1: it was a hot one out there today. Dialed back
- 0:27Speaker 1: a little bit. No pads here today on what is it?
- 0:30Speaker 1: What we're losing track of days? We're Wednesday, day seven.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It's starting to get into the dog days of training camp,
- 0:36Speaker 1: losing track of time. But this is Mike do so join.
- 0:39Speaker 1: We got some special guests today, of course, Paul Perillo,
- 0:41Speaker 1: Evan Lazar and a special guest today. Offensive lineman's been
- 0:44Speaker 1: working around here. He hasn't turned your volume up there
- 0:47Speaker 1: you go. Um, Christian Taylor's joining us. Somebody who works here.
- 0:51Speaker 1: But he's got some experience in the offensive line, going
- 0:53Speaker 1: to Georgia Southern as well as Bennett College. So Christian,
- 0:56Speaker 1: thank you for joining us. We put him on watching
- 0:58Speaker 1: the offensive and defensive line, so we want to get
- 1:00Speaker 1: some input in terms of, you know, what he's seeing
- 1:03Speaker 1: with his keen football eye. But first let's talk a
- 1:06Speaker 1: little bit about this practice, guys. It was maybe not
- 1:08Speaker 1: the most eventful one. Bill Belichick said, we're gonna dial back,
- 1:11Speaker 1: fix some things today. Seems like it might be set
- 1:13Speaker 1: in the stage for tomorrow. My favorite part of that was,
- 1:17Speaker 1: you know, we have to fix some things, would specifically everything,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and I would say that the way they went about
- 1:24Speaker 1: the practice it sort of showed that a little bit.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I did think it was a you know, a slower tempo,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and I thought there was more instruction going on than
- 1:30Speaker 1: we typically see in a training camp practice. I thought,
- 1:35Speaker 1: you know, again, I wouldn't call it a walk through.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I think it was a little bit faster paced than
- 1:39Speaker 1: a walk through. But there were some moments at least
- 1:42Speaker 1: where there was some plays. I thought that went off
- 1:43Speaker 1: a little bit smoother than we've seen more consistently in
- 1:48Speaker 1: the recent past. But again some disjointed periods for the offense.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I mean, I thought Kendrick Bourne picked up a few catches.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I mean, it wasn't anything earth shattering, but it was
- 1:56Speaker 1: nice to maybe see him get involved a little bit. Evan,
- 1:58Speaker 1: what else stuck out to you today? I think the
- 2:00Speaker 1: main emphasis for today was a smoother operation overall, offensively.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I don't think they're going to get caught up, not
- 2:07Speaker 1: that they ever really do, and the results of completions
- 2:10Speaker 1: or big plays down the field or anything that actually
- 2:14Speaker 1: was a product of what they did out there today.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But overall, I agree with Paul that a little bit
- 2:19Speaker 1: smoother offensively. Seemed like they were trying to get to
- 2:23Speaker 1: their landmarks and their passing concepts and trying to basically
- 2:27Speaker 1: work out some of those kinks. It was a lot
- 2:29Speaker 1: of mental stuff and correcting mistakes. But the one thing
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'll say that last red zone period ramped up a
- 2:36Speaker 1: little bit the competition and once again Matthew Judean off
- 2:39Speaker 1: the left side, Mac Wilson on an interior blitz. More
- 2:42Speaker 1: pressure on mac Jones to end that red zone period.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Two straight drop backs to end the practice for Mac
- 2:48Speaker 1: one throwaway one would be sacked for mac Wilson. So
- 2:52Speaker 1: still a lot to work out up front that we
- 2:55Speaker 1: saw yesterday and the day before in pads. Well, mac Wilson,
- 2:58Speaker 1: sure that's the place, stood up to me. He blew it.
- 3:00Speaker 1: So Christian, let's go to you. We saw a couple
- 3:01Speaker 1: of days of pads. You've got to look at some
- 3:04Speaker 1: of the offensive line and we know they're going through
- 3:06Speaker 1: some transition. But you know, just for you as a
- 3:08Speaker 1: college offensive lineman, what stood out to you some of
- 3:11Speaker 1: the guys, what what you know catches your eye as
- 3:13Speaker 1: you're watching some of these one on ones from the
- 3:15Speaker 1: last couple of days. Well, one thing that I saw
- 3:18Speaker 1: that did catch my attention was Justin Harren playing right
- 3:21Speaker 1: tackle as a backup. I think he is a solid
- 3:24Speaker 1: backup at right tackle. He had some great blocks today,
- 3:28Speaker 1: able to cut guys off, really really athletic. But I
- 3:31Speaker 1: think they're still working on, you know, jelling. Really, I
- 3:34Speaker 1: think they need some time to work together. It looks
- 3:37Speaker 1: like cold Strange may possibly still be trying to learn
- 3:40Speaker 1: the playbook. He's asking a lot of questions when he's
- 3:42Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage. So I think they're just
- 3:44Speaker 1: working on you know, coercion, working together, understanding each other
- 3:48Speaker 1: when they're in the scenario. But I think, you know,
- 3:51Speaker 1: by the end of camp, they'll be all right. Now.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I mean, I gotta bring up Trent Brown because I mean,
- 3:55Speaker 1: you're people can't see it. This is a podcast, but
- 3:57Speaker 1: Christians a giant guy. I mean, he looks like he
- 3:58Speaker 1: could strap them up right now, go out there and
- 4:00Speaker 1: look right in place with the rest of the offensive line.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But you know, just for you big guy. I mean,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I know offensive tackles are generally all big, but you know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: just Trump Brown. What is your impression to him as
- 4:08Speaker 1: as an offensive tackle in the NFL and just the
- 4:10Speaker 1: pure size that he has. Yeah, well, you love the
- 4:13Speaker 1: size that Trent Brown has. He's massive, long, athletic. He's
- 4:18Speaker 1: moving over to left tackle again. That's you know, somewhere
- 4:20Speaker 1: where those quick guys are going to be defensive end.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You're talking, you know, Miles Garrett, people like that. I
- 4:25Speaker 1: really liked him at right tackle. Um, I think his
- 4:27Speaker 1: feet were fit for right tackle. Need to watch him
- 4:31Speaker 1: a little bit more at left tackle. I don't know,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you know how I feel with him over there. I
- 4:35Speaker 1: think he's struggled in a few aspects. You know, some
- 4:37Speaker 1: of those reach blocks are on the outside zone that
- 4:40Speaker 1: you know we talked about earlier. Struggled to get over
- 4:43Speaker 1: there a little bit. So, you know, maybe work on
- 4:45Speaker 1: his feet a little bit. But I do like what
- 4:47Speaker 1: I see from him in camp. Pass protections awesome. He's
- 4:50Speaker 1: got such size you can't get around the guy. Once
- 4:52Speaker 1: he's got his hands on you. I mean he's really
- 4:54Speaker 1: locked in. So well, one more for you. I mean
- 4:56Speaker 1: you mentioned that the zone, you know, the outside zone,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and that's been a running rap that they've done a
- 5:01Speaker 1: number of times. I mean it continued today. I thought
- 5:03Speaker 1: a little bit more inside. But what can you just
- 5:05Speaker 1: tell us a little bit of insight in terms of
- 5:07Speaker 1: the outside zone kind of scheme, you know, going back
- 5:09Speaker 1: to the Broncos in the day, but you know, just
- 5:11Speaker 1: from the offensive lines perspective, because I think yesterday Evan
- 5:14Speaker 1: had you know, some good points that it's it has
- 5:16Speaker 1: to all work in conjunction and timing, and that takes
- 5:19Speaker 1: time to wrap into practice and to get on the
- 5:21Speaker 1: same page. But you know, just from your experience and
- 5:23Speaker 1: what you've seen, what stands out to you about those
- 5:25Speaker 1: outside zone kind of runs and that scheme that they
- 5:27Speaker 1: seem to be really heavily using. Well, outside zone is
- 5:32Speaker 1: an amazing play. It's simple, it's basic. But when it
- 5:35Speaker 1: gets down to the blocking scheme of it, I mean
- 5:38Speaker 1: those guys have to be able to read the defensive line.
- 5:40Speaker 1: You know, if I have a three technique and he
- 5:42Speaker 1: shoots inside, I have to understand that when I'm at
- 5:44Speaker 1: right guard, I need to be able to work through
- 5:47Speaker 1: that guy so I can get to the back of
- 5:49Speaker 1: that I'm working too. And so you know, it's a
- 5:53Speaker 1: scheme that requires you to have really really athletic offensive linemen,
- 5:57Speaker 1: really quick offensive linemen. I don't necessarily know if we
- 6:00Speaker 1: have the quick offensive line like that, but they're so
- 6:03Speaker 1: skilled they understand what they're doing and where they're out
- 6:05Speaker 1: on the field. That outside zone can come together really,
- 6:08Speaker 1: really nicely, especially if you get the wide receivers on
- 6:10Speaker 1: the outside who can maintain their block so you can
- 6:12Speaker 1: get to the outside there. I mean, that's what it's for.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You want to you want to get leverage on those guys. So, yeah,
- 6:16Speaker 1: we've talked about that on the show quite a bit
- 6:19Speaker 1: about the outside zone scheme, trent On. WHENU you know,
- 6:23Speaker 1: some of these bigger guys that maybe are built more
- 6:25Speaker 1: for men or gap blocking, and now they are transitioning
- 6:29Speaker 1: to this outside zone scheme, and I'm with you. I'm
- 6:31Speaker 1: interested to see how those bigger guys handle it, because
- 6:35Speaker 1: you know, Cole Strange is drafted, is a great combine athlete,
- 6:39Speaker 1: ran a lot of outside zone at Chattanooga. That that's
- 6:41Speaker 1: his bread and butter. That's why he's here is because
- 6:43Speaker 1: of how athletic he is. But some of these other
- 6:45Speaker 1: holdovers from what was really a downhill power type of
- 6:48Speaker 1: scheme before. It's going to be interesting to see if
- 6:51Speaker 1: those guys transition into it and who might be an
- 6:53Speaker 1: odd man out there because of that, And it's probably
- 6:55Speaker 1: more of a Patriots unfiltered topic. But the most athletic
- 6:59Speaker 1: lineman they probably we had with Shack Mason, who played
- 7:01Speaker 1: in a triple option and decided that he was too expensive. Right,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and now you have Michael Owen use some questions about,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know, how his athleticism will hold up if this
- 7:09Speaker 1: is in fact the wholesale change in. Of course there's
- 7:11Speaker 1: Bill Belichick was asked about it this morning and said,
- 7:13Speaker 1: you know, we are going to be installing that other
- 7:14Speaker 1: stuff we've just been doing this first. We'll see how
- 7:17Speaker 1: true that is. But I think tomorrow is setting up
- 7:19Speaker 1: to be a big day. Today a little bit here
- 7:21Speaker 1: nor there, a couple I think turns Mitchell got his
- 7:24Speaker 1: hands on and I think at least one interception, so
- 7:26Speaker 1: he did stand out again. But otherwise, you know, not
- 7:28Speaker 1: a totally eventful day. But I think tomorrow is the
- 7:31Speaker 1: big one. So we will be back Tomorrow, Thursday, Friday
- 7:34Speaker 1: night in stadium practice, Probably not that much going on,
- 7:36Speaker 1: so I think if you're thinking tomorrow's the day, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: if you're bad about that Miami opener and the heat
- 7:41Speaker 1: down there, it's supposed to be just as hot here,
- 7:43Speaker 1: so I think it'll be a good preparation for that
- 7:46Speaker 1: game in the opening week. So that'll do it for
- 7:48Speaker 1: us for today on Wednesday. We'll catch you tomorrow on
- 7:51Speaker 1: Thursday on the campcast. Thank you for downloading this podcast,
