- 0:00Speaker 1: John Phantom back with us on the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 0:03Speaker 1: Coaches Show on Mike Chrispino. Providence comes to play at
- 0:06Speaker 1: Dample Pavilion Sunday, John and Liam mcneely's not going to
- 0:10Speaker 1: be able to play, so Yukon's going to be tested there.
- 0:13Speaker 1: And I was talking to Dan early early in the
- 0:15Speaker 1: show about Providence and their desperation level. They've dropped three
- 0:19Speaker 1: in a row, four or five. They got embarrassed at
- 0:21Speaker 1: home to Marquette. I think at some point here Providence
- 0:25Speaker 1: this month has got to come up with some victories,
- 0:28Speaker 1: either on the row and at Creighton or maybe at Villanova.
- 0:31Speaker 1: They've got to start making some headway here if they
- 0:33Speaker 1: want to make a case to get on the bubble even.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Well, they are far from that, Mike.
- 0:39Speaker 3: And the biggest reason why is because Bryce Hopkins has
- 0:43Speaker 3: barely played. He's only played in three games coming off
- 0:45Speaker 3: that terrible ACL injury suffered right around a year ago,
- 0:50Speaker 3: and Hopkins had soreness after the DePaul game, the conference
- 0:53Speaker 3: opener for the Friars that they won, and since then,
- 0:56Speaker 3: this is a team that.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Has really really struggled.
- 0:59Speaker 3: By lous using three in a row, there's two things
- 1:02Speaker 3: happening right now with this team. Number one, the transfers
- 1:06Speaker 3: that they brought in just haven't performed the level that
- 1:08Speaker 3: they thought. Bensley Joseph, you know, coming into this program.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I think that that Providence thought he could be a
- 1:15Speaker 3: big time scorer coming in from Miami. He's just a
- 1:18Speaker 3: complimentary guy. Wesley Cardett coming in from Chicago State. Chicago
- 1:22Speaker 3: State and Providence Mike are two very different places, two
- 1:26Speaker 3: very conferences. This is a different level. And they didn't
- 1:29Speaker 3: have a center. I mean they do not have they
- 1:33Speaker 3: don't have a big East level center this year. They
- 1:36Speaker 3: just haven't had that type of productivity like they had
- 1:40Speaker 3: last year with Josh so Duro. You know, they've got
- 1:42Speaker 3: a couple of candidates, ozwond A rooms Away, a room
- 1:46Speaker 3: One's Way, who's one of the more difficult names in
- 1:50Speaker 3: this conference, increased to Sandiko, who transferred in from Saint Joe's.
- 1:55Speaker 3: It just hasn't panned out. They're not getting frontcore production.
- 1:59Speaker 3: So when you look at those those two things, then
- 2:03Speaker 3: it comes down to three point shooting. They've not been
- 2:07Speaker 3: a particularly great perimeter shooting team. So this is the
- 2:11Speaker 3: Providence team that has has struggled to generate consistent offense
- 2:16Speaker 3: and as a result, they they're they're looking at a
- 2:20Speaker 3: tough year here, and yes, they'll be desperate, They will
- 2:23Speaker 3: be absolutely desperate against Connecticut, but their shot making is
- 2:28Speaker 3: going to have to be.
- 2:29Speaker 2: A whole lot better from the perimeter for them to
- 2:31Speaker 2: have a chance in this game.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And you know this, Mike, if you want to get
- 2:35Speaker 3: in a three point shooting competition with Connecticut, good luck,
- 2:39Speaker 3: because you CON's a different team defensively now, and on
- 2:42Speaker 3: the offensive end, the Huskies can shoot with the best
- 2:44Speaker 3: of them.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Friars are a good defensive team up in the
- 2:47Speaker 1: top echelon of the Big East. That's got to be
- 2:49Speaker 1: their bread and butter. But you're right, they got to
- 2:51Speaker 1: they got to make some shots. Quick thoughts on Saint
- 2:54Speaker 1: John's again, because you know, on to Rick Patino, you
- 2:57Speaker 1: knew they'd be improved in year two. And you know
- 3:00Speaker 1: you I follow a lot of the New York papers
- 3:03Speaker 1: having worked there for all those years, and they have
- 3:05Speaker 1: a lot of good feelings about what Rick Patino's doing.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But but Tino, to me, has been very down to
- 3:12Speaker 1: earth about it. What he says about his teams. He
- 3:14Speaker 1: doesn't blow up, you know, he didn't blow his horn
- 3:16Speaker 1: a lot. He basically tells it like it is about
- 3:19Speaker 1: his teams. I think that's a great approach for him
- 3:21Speaker 1: with the team he's got.
- 3:23Speaker 3: He's very candid and he's fully embraced the nil pay
- 3:28Speaker 3: for play model that college athletics has become his. Saint
- 3:33Speaker 3: John's team has a terrific big man in Zubi edgefor
- 3:38Speaker 3: who I think is is writ in the mix for
- 3:39Speaker 3: most improved player in the Big East. And Davon Smith,
- 3:45Speaker 3: I think is a jet and transition who just makes
- 3:48Speaker 3: them go, makes them tick, and he's really turned it
- 3:50Speaker 3: on as of a r. J. Lewis is the key
- 3:52Speaker 3: in the whole operation. Kadari Richmond has not panned out
- 3:56Speaker 3: to this point, the transfer from Seaton Hall. He's really
- 3:59Speaker 3: struggled to shoot the basketball. You know, he's he's under
- 4:03Speaker 3: thirty five percent from the free throw line, which is
- 4:06Speaker 3: just I mean, it's it's it's hard to fathom his
- 4:10Speaker 3: figures right now from from the free throw line because
- 4:13Speaker 3: he's really struggled there.
- 4:14Speaker 2: But this it's a Saint John's.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Team that that I think can do a couple of
- 4:20Speaker 3: things really well. One, they can rebound the basketball really well.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Edge of four leads the country in offensive rebounding two.
- 4:26Speaker 3: They're they're going to guard. They can really defend, and
- 4:30Speaker 3: they can generate pace and attack the rim. They've got
- 4:33Speaker 3: several guys who could just break you down and finish.
- 4:36Speaker 3: The flip side of it is they can't shoot the
- 4:37Speaker 3: ball from from beyond the arc. This is a team
- 4:40Speaker 3: in three Big East Games. Mike Crispino in three Big
- 4:44Speaker 3: East Games has combined to make eight threes. That's it
- 4:48Speaker 3: good if won two of them, which just makes it
- 4:51Speaker 3: even harder to believe. But until they find three point shooting,
- 4:55Speaker 3: it's hard to say that they're going to be able
- 4:58Speaker 3: to beat the likes of a Connecticut or a Marquette.
- 5:01Speaker 3: A good team, I do think they're a tournament team,
- 5:03Speaker 3: but their shot making has to improve.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I think Kadari Richmond leaving Seaton Hall hurt the
- 5:08Speaker 1: Pirates more than it's helped the Red Storm. To be honest,
- 5:11Speaker 1: that guy was an excellent player with the Pirates and
- 5:13Speaker 1: he doesn't look like the same player with Saint John's.
- 5:16Speaker 2: No, the money might be greener, but the grass isn't
- 5:19Speaker 2: always greener. On the other side, the.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Money was greater, but you're right, the grass maybe not
- 5:24Speaker 1: as green, all right, John Fantom, we appreciate it. Thank you.
- 5:26Speaker 1: We'll see you down the road as the Big East
- 5:28Speaker 1: season really gets underway here in January, February, all the
- 5:31Speaker 1: way the run to the March madness that we expect
- 5:36Speaker 1: around the country for NCAAA basketball. Thanks John, We'll talk
- 5:39Speaker 1: to you.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Appreciate you. Happy to you everybody, all right.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Happy New Year to you. Dan Hurley, we appreciate him
- 5:45Speaker 1: and thank him for his work here on the Yukon

- 5:49Speaker 1: you again on Sunday as Yukon takes on Providence. One
- 5:53Speaker 1: thirty is the pre game on the Yukon Sports Network.
