- 0:02Speaker 1: College football with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And, of course, everyone knows the exact right time to
- 0:08Speaker 2: start a college football show is week four of the
- 0:11Speaker 2: college football season.
- 0:12Speaker 3: There's T-Bob again.
- 0:13Speaker 1: That's right. Special guest. Glad to be back, guys. Love
- 0:17Speaker 1: coming to hang out with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:19Speaker 4: College football.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Mario Cristobal, head coach at the University of Miami. Thank
- 0:24Speaker 3: you for joining us.
- 0:24Speaker 4: I just don't find any value in it. Humans, like,
- 0:27Speaker 4: just spewing diarrhea out of their mouth. With Stu Gatz.
- 0:31Speaker 4: I can give a rat's fat ass about what he
- 0:33Speaker 4: says or does. And the bear. The f * * *
- 0:36Speaker 4: ing bear is awesome.
- 0:37Speaker 5: You're listening to College Football with Stu Gatz and the bear.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It is College Football with Stu Gatz and the bear,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and we are pleased to be joined for the first
- 0:46Speaker 2: time on this show by T-Bob, host of Wake Up Barstool,
- 0:51Speaker 2: 8 to 10 a.m. Eastern every day. on FS1 and
- 0:56Speaker 2: wherever you get your podcasts. We are headed into a
- 0:59Speaker 2: big week of college football, gentlemen. T-Bob, take it away,
- 1:02Speaker 2: my friends.
- 1:04Speaker 1: What's up, boys? Thanks for letting me kind of, you know,
- 1:06Speaker 1: I know I'm just a guest, but thank you for
- 1:08Speaker 1: letting me kind of host the show. I've got a
- 1:11Speaker 1: lot of topics I want to talk about, so it's
- 1:12Speaker 1: very gracious of you. Bear, Stu, I hope you're doing well. Okay,
- 1:16Speaker 1: so a few topics before we get into the games today.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We have a gaggle of quarterback stories. We've got a
- 1:25Speaker 1: gaggle of coaching stories. Which would you rather start with?
- 1:28Speaker 3: A couple of gaggles cutting it up, huh? I mean, hmm, hmm.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Bear? What? Gaggles? Okay, never mind, never mind.
- 1:38Speaker 3: He wasn't listening.
- 1:39Speaker 1: He can't be a guest showing up to host.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Stop it. Stop it right now. Bear wasn't listening. It's okay.
- 1:45Speaker 2: He's eating. I haven't eaten yet. He asked a question,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and I threw that question. I made a joke and
- 1:51Speaker 2: then threw the question.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Over to you.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So let's ask the question again.
- 1:56Speaker 2: We have a gaggle of quarterback questions, right, and a
- 2:01Speaker 2: gaggle of coaching questions.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Which one do you want to start with?
- 2:04Speaker 4: Bear?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Bear?
- 2:10Speaker 4: I would, I'd love to start with Ohio, with Ohio
- 2:12Speaker 4: state USC. I think that that is the most interesting one.
- 2:16Speaker 4: That is the one that has the biggest relevance in
- 2:19Speaker 4: the national title race. I thought it was an interesting
- 2:22Speaker 4: quote from our friend, Ryan day, the other day about, uh,
- 2:26Speaker 4: Tim and Sinclair and looking and feeling more comfortable.
- 2:29Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Yeah. And like, I don't know, I get it. If
- 2:33Speaker 4: I could run that through the, the coach-speak interpretation machine there,
- 2:38Speaker 4: the translate machine, that kind of has a feeling like
- 2:42Speaker 4: Ohio State is up poo-poo creek without a paddle in
- 2:46Speaker 4: terms of their quarterback position right now.
- 2:48Speaker 3: All right, so I'm going to choose a gaggle of quarterbacks, okay?
- 2:52Speaker 1: This could not. I mean, there's no reality in which
- 2:56Speaker 1: this entire interaction's just played out. What I've ever thought,
- 3:01Speaker 1: that Bayer's second attempt at the answer could have gotten worse.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I mean, he didn't listen. And then when he did listen,
- 3:08Speaker 1: he's just like, nah, fuck that. What was wrong with
- 3:12Speaker 1: my answer?
- 3:13Speaker 4: That's a quarterback situation.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 3:15Speaker 4: You're right. You're right. It is.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It is fair. That's fair. But we will talk about
- 3:20Speaker 1: some games.
- 3:21Speaker 4: What am I missing? I mean, I know it's like
- 3:24Speaker 4: everything's way over my head to begin with.
- 3:25Speaker 3: No, no, no, no.
- 3:26Speaker 4: First of all- I feel like I'm the guest here,
- 3:30Speaker 4: and it's college football with Stugatz and T-Bob right now.
- 3:33Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I'm the asshole being made fun of.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I don't want you to feel like we're teaming up
- 3:38Speaker 3: on you. That is not the case.
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's funny, and Lord knows I've been made fun of
- 3:42Speaker 2: my entire radio career. I don't want to hear from you, Bear.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You missed the question. That's all that happened, and we're
- 3:48Speaker 2: laughing at it.
- 3:48Speaker 3: That's it. All right, all right, all right.
- 3:50Speaker 1: It's my fault for making the question in the first place.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I'm very sensitive and vulnerable right now.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I know you are. Mike EA has something, though, real quick.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Go ahead, Mike.
- 3:58Speaker 4: They asked you an either or question and then there
- 4:00Speaker 4: was literally four seconds of silence, which in podcasting is
- 4:05Speaker 4: an eternity. And I want you to know now, Bear,
- 4:07Speaker 4: I'm not taking it out in post.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You guys are all going to hear all four seconds
- 4:12Speaker 2: of silence.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Mikey, put it on the poll. Did that four seconds
- 4:16Speaker 3: feel like four years?
- 4:17Speaker 1: All right. Well, in honor of four seconds of silence for,
- 4:25Speaker 1: let's do four seconds of silence for Dante Moore.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:34Speaker 1: As it was announced, Dante Moore is going to miss
- 4:36Speaker 1: the remainder of the season. Now, this is something that
- 4:38Speaker 1: we had discussed on the previous show, and I was
- 4:42Speaker 1: very much of the opinion, no, like Dante Moore has
- 4:44Speaker 1: a lot to prove to the NFL. He has to
- 4:45Speaker 1: prove that he wants to compete. He has to come
- 4:47Speaker 1: back this year if he wants to accomplish some of
- 4:48Speaker 1: those goals. Well, I guess I'm an asshole, guys, because
- 4:52Speaker 1: Dante Moore is not going to return, and he's And
- 4:56Speaker 1: this is what I want to get at because it's, it's,
- 4:58Speaker 1: it's remember a few weeks ago, he got the concussion.
- 5:00Speaker 1: He went to slide cheap shot gets knocked out.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Um, I know that we know more about concussions now.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I know that they can hold you out longer than
- 5:09Speaker 1: they used to. Absolutely. I don't know that I've ever
- 5:12Speaker 1: seen a concussion preemptively stop somebody from from playing for
- 5:18Speaker 1: the second half of the football season, right? Like generally
- 5:21Speaker 1: this situation that you update as you go along, Dan
- 5:24Speaker 1: landing has been adamant that more would play. If he could,
- 5:28Speaker 1: are y'all buying this? Are y'all buying that more is,
- 5:32Speaker 1: is that this injury really needs to keep now the
- 5:34Speaker 1: rest of the year, or is he trying to get
- 5:37Speaker 1: out of a dead season, move on with his life
- 5:39Speaker 1: and go to the NFL?
- 5:41Speaker 4: I think he's, I think it's the team taking care
- 5:44Speaker 4: of him and saying, look, we are our, Our goals
- 5:47Speaker 4: are shot. You came back. You took a chance on us.
- 5:50Speaker 4: It didn't work out. We're not going to put you
- 5:52Speaker 4: in harm's way anymore than we already are. We need
- 5:56Speaker 4: to figure out now if Dylan Riola is the guy
- 5:58Speaker 4: moving forward next year, which, good God, it doesn't look
- 6:01Speaker 4: like he is after that second half against USA. He's
- 6:04Speaker 4: been freaking terrible. But I think Oregon is trying to
- 6:09Speaker 4: do Dante Morris solid here and basically just say, we're
- 6:12Speaker 4: not clearing you. We're not making you eligible to play.
- 6:16Speaker 4: We're taking the decision out of your hands. That way
- 6:19Speaker 4: you don't look like the bad guy and saying, why
- 6:21Speaker 4: am I coming back now to play to maybe go
- 6:24Speaker 4: to the Sun Bowl?
- 6:25Speaker 2: But, Bear, if you're Dante Moore, don't you want more opportunities?
- 6:29Speaker 2: Don't you want to play? Don't you want to showcase
- 6:31Speaker 2: your talents? Because this was a guy who was going
- 6:33Speaker 2: to be a top five pick in the NFL draft,
- 6:35Speaker 2: and now I'm not certain he'll be a first-round pick
- 6:37Speaker 2: in the NFL draft.
- 6:38Speaker 4: I'm not even certain.
- 6:39Speaker 3: You think he'll be a first-round pick?
- 6:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I've read that he's still that that he is
- 6:44Speaker 1: still and that was a big question to me. But yeah,
- 6:46Speaker 1: everything I've read from experts is saying that they still
- 6:48Speaker 1: view him as a consensus first rounder.
- 6:50Speaker 4: OK, Mitch Trubisky and Anthony Richardson are going to top
- 6:56Speaker 4: for the NFL draft. Like, but again, the start thing
- 7:00Speaker 4: will be will be an issue. That'll be a concern.
- 7:02Speaker 4: People will bring that up. and maybe hold that against him.
- 7:05Speaker 4: So in a roundabout way, you're probably right in what's
- 7:09Speaker 4: going to be a conversation point going into draft, but
- 7:12Speaker 4: he's still going to be going in the top five,
- 7:14Speaker 4: top ten of the draft.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Okay, so I wouldn't have much confidence in Dante Moore
- 7:17Speaker 2: taking him in the first round. Like the last we
- 7:19Speaker 2: saw of Dante Moore, it wasn't pretty, and I wouldn't
- 7:22Speaker 2: have a ton of confidence taking him with a top
- 7:24Speaker 2: five pick in.
- 7:24Speaker 3: The NFL draft.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's a good chance you could be, Stu.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So get ready.
- 7:29Speaker 3: No, we're the team that would do it. Trust me.
- 7:33Speaker 4: We've got three of the top 11 right now, Stu Gatz.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I know.
- 7:35Speaker 5: I know.
- 7:36Speaker 3: We can move up wherever we want. How about that? Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 1: The shadow winner of the Colts fire sale, the New
- 7:44Speaker 1: York Jets. Once again, the Jets only have the NFL draft. Dang,
- 7:48Speaker 1: they're hat on.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yeah, look, again, I think this is a complicated story.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I like Dante Moore's story overall. I like the maturity
- 7:57Speaker 1: that he showed in taking a step back and being
- 7:59Speaker 1: willing to sit behind Knicks for a year, getting to
- 8:01Speaker 1: the field, choosing to come back to try to fill
- 8:04Speaker 1: out the sort of little meat on the bone that
- 8:06Speaker 1: he left at the end of last year. I don't
- 8:08Speaker 1: love this turn. It feels like he got hit with
- 8:12Speaker 1: a lot of adversity.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Yep.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And they're all kind of deciding to pack it up.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So I'm with you, Stu. I would feel way less confident.
- 8:19Speaker 1: But that's a great part about sports. He'll have a
- 8:21Speaker 1: chance to prove us wrong.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Right.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Speaking of quarterbacks missing the rest of the season, it's
- 8:25Speaker 1: announced this week Camario Taylor, Mississippi State superstar, is going
- 8:29Speaker 1: to miss the rest of the season. He has turf toe.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He's now having surgery on said toe. And guys, the
- 8:35Speaker 1: Camario Taylor sweepstakes just opened up. So back up the
- 8:39Speaker 1: Brinks trucks and get ready for your best pitch. Bear,
- 8:43Speaker 1: I see you over there salivating. Miami cannot wait here.
- 8:50Speaker 1: He is adamant he's staying in Starkville. Do we believe this?
- 8:54Speaker 4: It's going to be a test of his willpower because
- 8:57Speaker 4: whether it's Miami, whether it's Or someone is going to
- 9:02Speaker 4: come in there and say, okay, if Mississippi State is
- 9:05Speaker 4: giving you $ 2 million, we'll give you $ 4 million. And
- 9:09Speaker 4: it's going to be a test of his principles and
- 9:12Speaker 4: his stance and his belief and his love and affection
- 9:16Speaker 4: for Mississippi State and Starkville and growing up a Bulldogs
- 9:20Speaker 4: fan and the people there took a chance with him
- 9:23Speaker 4: and stayed with him. And now he turned out to
- 9:25Speaker 4: be a great quarterback. I think he stays. I think
- 9:30Speaker 4: he does stay. I think Mississippi State finds a way
- 9:32Speaker 4: to keep him there. But it's going to be very interesting.
- 9:35Speaker 4: It's out there already. He is adamant about it. We'll
- 9:40Speaker 4: see how adamant about it he can be with a
- 9:42Speaker 4: $ 4 million check in front of him. But I think
- 9:45Speaker 4: he stays, T-Bob.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Higher than $ 4 million.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Yeah, so listen, Bear, I love my hometown as well.
- 9:51Speaker 4: I do.
- 9:51Speaker 2: I love it. I love money more. And so I
- 9:54Speaker 2: will ask you this, with that being said, I don't
- 9:57Speaker 2: know this. You guys do, okay?
- 9:59Speaker 3: You pay attention. to this stuff.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Can Mississippi state match any offer? Do they have the
- 10:04Speaker 2: money available to match an offer from what say UM,
- 10:08Speaker 2: Oregon or elsewhere?
- 10:11Speaker 1: I mean, it's tough because I would view like somebody
- 10:15Speaker 1: probably coming in. If we just look at the market
- 10:17Speaker 1: and how it's grown every year, Right, like a $ 7
- 10:20Speaker 1: million offer, if people get desperate enough, doesn't seem that
- 10:24Speaker 1: crazy to me. I imagine Mississippi State could find some
- 10:31Speaker 1: way of matching the raw number. I think the bigger
- 10:33Speaker 1: issue would be if they did, are they then committing
- 10:37Speaker 1: too many resources to one spot and then losing out
- 10:40Speaker 1: everywhere else, which is kind of what happened to, like,
- 10:42Speaker 1: Lenora Sellers in South Carolina the last couple of years.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I know Barry, we've talked about some other examples of
- 10:47Speaker 1: that as well. So it's a very tricky spot. The
- 10:49Speaker 1: ideal for State would be to keep him on a
- 10:51Speaker 1: hometown discount, which with Taylor may be possible. Call me naive.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I do actually believe that. But, yeah, it becomes sort
- 11:01Speaker 1: of a question of resource management for the Bulldogs.
- 11:05Speaker 4: I think we're going to be, what, sending out emails.
- 11:07Speaker 4: And you know how we're getting all, like, you get
- 11:10Speaker 4: the random texts, like, looking for donations now in the political.
- 11:13Speaker 4: I think you're going to be getting, like, random texts
- 11:16Speaker 4: to Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro. Hey, to the Camarillo Fund, please.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Wait, so this is interesting to me because now teams,
- 11:24Speaker 2: certain universities, have to factor this in like a salary cap.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Them committing too much money to one guy and not
- 11:31Speaker 2: being able to build a championship team around Kamario Taylor
- 11:34Speaker 2: because all their money has been spent there.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, look, I think, again, South Carolina has
- 11:39Speaker 1: been one of the instances of the looms largest because
- 11:41Speaker 1: it wasn't just Sellers. They had to sell out to
- 11:43Speaker 1: keep Dylan Stewart and Lenore Sellers And for a couple
- 11:47Speaker 1: of years, I think it hamstrung them. Now, obviously, the
- 11:49Speaker 1: last couple of weeks, Gamecock October is in full swing,
- 11:53Speaker 1: so shout out to him. But, yeah, Kamara, the bigger
- 11:56Speaker 1: news here, really, even though I know that's what the
- 11:57Speaker 1: conversation sports talk has to have is, Kamara Taylor was
- 12:01Speaker 1: one of the best quarterbacks to watch play football this year. Like,
- 12:07Speaker 1: we all lose out that we don't get to see
- 12:09Speaker 1: him throw balls on Saturday for the rest of the season,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and I look forward to it. to what he brings
- 12:13Speaker 1: back next year, wherever it is, I'm guessing it's in Starkville. And, uh,
- 12:17Speaker 1: what's this on my notes here? Final bit of news. Um,
- 12:20Speaker 1: Tommy Carr is named the Michigan starter against Rutgers.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Shocker.
- 12:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I don't know that, that, uh, that, that matters.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Rutgers seems like a good place to get a start,
- 12:31Speaker 3: you know, like, I mean, yeah. Yeah.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Or 14 points.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 12:36Speaker 4: They're favored by 14 points.
- 12:41Speaker 1: They're favored by 14. Can they score 14?
- 12:43Speaker 3: Can they get to 14?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Bear, real quick before you go to break, let's do
- 12:51Speaker 1: the Ohio State quarterback story. I missed this Ryan Day quote.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So what are you talking about here with Ryan Day
- 12:58Speaker 1: and you're kind of reading between the lines?
- 13:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we all just assumed that Fahey was
- 13:03Speaker 4: going to be the guy and not that he ever
- 13:08Speaker 4: said he was going to, but I think the fact
- 13:09Speaker 4: that Fahey played in the game against Indiana and it
- 13:13Speaker 4: looked like that was the way he'd won the job.
- 13:16Speaker 4: He'd won the backup job and it looked like we
- 13:18Speaker 4: all just thought it was cut and dry. But yeah,
- 13:20Speaker 4: there was a quote from, I guess it's a, media availability,
- 13:24Speaker 4: his press conference the other day where he was talking
- 13:26Speaker 4: about Tavon Sinclair and how he's, he's got to be
- 13:30Speaker 4: ready too. And he's looked, grasping it and looks so
- 13:33Speaker 4: much better and comfortable. It looked, it, I don't know.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I get the coach needs to be confident and have
- 13:41Speaker 4: his guys, his backup especially, now his third string guy,
- 13:44Speaker 4: ready to play and feel like he's improving and making
- 13:47Speaker 4: the team believe. And maybe you want to try and
- 13:49Speaker 4: have a little bit of gamesmanship with USC. Like, you
- 13:52Speaker 4: might see this guy too. You don't know. But like,
- 13:54Speaker 4: what does that really do? Like, is USC really going
- 13:56Speaker 4: to be shaking their boots over, oh, the third string quarterback,
- 13:59Speaker 4: true freshman, might come in now and play? Like, it
- 14:03Speaker 4: seems like This could be an Ohio State offense that
- 14:08Speaker 4: we're looking at maybe, what, 15 passes a game, and
- 14:12Speaker 4: they're going to have to win with defense and running
- 14:14Speaker 4: the ball, and maybe they can. But I don't know.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I just, the vibe meter is not real good right
- 14:22Speaker 4: now on potentially what this Ohio State offense could look
- 14:25Speaker 4: like on Saturday night.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So to you, Bob, I know we have to break,
- 14:27Speaker 2: but this is super interesting because it used to be,
- 14:30Speaker 2: A five-star quarterback starting at Ohio State had a five-star
- 14:34Speaker 2: backing him up and had a five-star backing the backup.
- 14:37Speaker 2: But now the talent is spread throughout the country because
- 14:39Speaker 2: of the transfer portal, because kids obviously want to play
- 14:42Speaker 2: college football.
- 14:43Speaker 3: And they don't care where they play it. They want
- 14:45Speaker 3: to showcase their talents.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So now your backups, this is super interesting because when
- 14:49Speaker 2: a good quarterback goes down, you no longer have the
- 14:52Speaker 2: five-star recruit. as the backup quarterback because he's gone to Syracuse.
- 14:56Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 14:58Speaker 1: Yeah, well, and it's like, okay, if you have, because
- 15:00Speaker 1: I think Tavion St. Clair is a big-time recruit, but
- 15:02Speaker 1: he's a freshman. It's like you might have a highly-rated guy,
- 15:05Speaker 1: but it's no longer somebody who's been there for two
- 15:08Speaker 1: or three years and has been willing to ride the
- 15:10Speaker 1: bench and has learned the system. I kind of like how,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and really like there's so much roster-building theory going on
- 15:17Speaker 1: in the country right now. I kind of like how
- 15:19Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin has done it, where he's gone for proven
- 15:23Speaker 1: veterans from lower levels of football guys that he thinks
- 15:26Speaker 1: can handle the bullets.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:27Speaker 1: That's why he originally went and got Chambliss to back
- 15:29Speaker 1: up Austin Simmons. Simmons goes down, Chambliss becomes a legend.
- 15:32Speaker 1: But even at LSU this year, he got Landon Clark
- 15:35Speaker 1: from Elon. And when Landon Clark has had to come
- 15:38Speaker 1: in for Sam Levitt, he has done fantastic. Like, there
- 15:41Speaker 1: has not been a major drop-off. So it's going to
- 15:43Speaker 1: be very interesting long-term to see how coaches in the
- 15:47Speaker 1: modern age continue to manage this. But you're certainly right.
- 15:50Speaker 1: depth at that position especially is at an all-time premium
- 15:55Speaker 1: because of the current landscape. All right, let's go to break.
- 15:59Speaker 1: When we get back, we'll talk games when we get back,
- 16:04Speaker 1: and then we can wrap up with the coaches. So
- 16:06Speaker 1: you preview a little weekend, wrap up with some coach talk,
- 16:09Speaker 1: more college football show with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Gaggles!
- 16:36Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to the College Football Show with
- 16:38Speaker 1: Sue Gatz and the Bear. All right, let's start with
- 16:40Speaker 1: the game that we were kind of just discussing, Ohio State-USC.
- 16:43Speaker 1: We talked about the quarterback situation, but, Bear, I want
- 16:46Speaker 1: to start from a gambler's perspective here because I feel like.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Oh, no, yeah.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, what's wrong, Bear? What's up? Look, I'm sorry. Yeah,
- 16:56Speaker 1: we had some fun at your expense at the beginning
- 16:58Speaker 1: of the show. What's going on? Is it a confident
- 17:01Speaker 1: shot from the gambling front, too, right now?
- 17:03Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it's... Yeah, the Georgia loss to Auburn a
- 17:07Speaker 4: couple weeks ago really, really shook me and put Bears
- 17:09Speaker 4: Bank behind quite a bit. Right. But you're right about
- 17:15Speaker 4: this game. We've talked so much about Ohio State and
- 17:17Speaker 4: the quarterback situation. What we haven't talked about is the
- 17:21Speaker 4: disaster that USC has been. Defensively, they are not good. Wisconsin,
- 17:25Speaker 4: they couldn't run the ball on Wisconsin last week. How
- 17:28Speaker 4: are they going to do on against an Ohio State
- 17:30Speaker 4: defense that's one of the best in the country? But
- 17:33Speaker 4: we have seen... this spot a lot yes like this
- 17:37Speaker 4: year alone but it's like what confidence do you have
- 17:41Speaker 4: though in usc under lincoln riley to win a game
- 17:45Speaker 4: like this if you look at the last 21 games
- 17:48Speaker 4: against ranked opponents they're 5 and 16 if they're an
- 17:53Speaker 4: underdog against a ranked opponent they're 4 and 13 and
- 17:56Speaker 4: then versus a an underdog against a top-10 team. They're 1-9,
- 18:02Speaker 4: and he's 0-5 at SC. These are not the types
- 18:05Speaker 4: of games that they win or Lincoln Riley wins. Maybe
- 18:09Speaker 4: we'll get it. We've seen these kind of unranked teams.
- 18:13Speaker 4: We talked about it last week. We saw a 5-win
- 18:16Speaker 4: unranked at home against ranked opponents. Maybe you get USC
- 18:20Speaker 4: rise up there off of a horseshit performance against a
- 18:23Speaker 4: short-handed Ohio State team, and they pull the upset. But, wow,
- 18:26Speaker 4: it's hard to have. A whole lot of faith in USC.
- 18:32Speaker 4: It seems like Ohio State is going to really benefit
- 18:36Speaker 4: here because they get a shaky USC team. You get
- 18:42Speaker 4: dead Oregon. You get Michigan who can't score.
- 18:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Yeah. Nebraska, who went with the hell with the last
- 18:49Speaker 4: time they won a big game.
- 18:50Speaker 3: They're the amazing.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Northwestern's probably their toughest remaining game.
- 18:53Speaker 3: I was going to say, what a world we live
- 18:55Speaker 3: in when it is. It is.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Of the remaining games, the most difficult opponent they're going
- 19:00Speaker 2: to face is Northwestern.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I mean, it's crazy.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Yeah, Ryan Braun's the absolute man. We talked to him
- 19:07Speaker 1: a couple days ago on Wake Up Barstool. Too many Burns.
- 19:11Speaker 4: My bad.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yes, David Braun. Absolute man. What he's done there, fantastic.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I'm with you, Bear. I just wanted to point that
- 19:19Speaker 1: out because you look at this and it's easy to
- 19:22Speaker 1: write off USC, but there are angles that can make
- 19:26Speaker 1: you like the Trojans. But overall, I think nobody's better
- 19:29Speaker 1: suited than Ohio State to handling missing their quarterback. They
- 19:32Speaker 1: can try to lean on that O-line in that run
- 19:34Speaker 1: game more. It has been great, but it can be
- 19:36Speaker 1: better maybe if they commit to it more. And then again,
- 19:39Speaker 1: who's ever at quarterback, just get the ball to four.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Just get the ball to four. You're the best player
- 19:44Speaker 1: in the country. And one of the fascinating storylines on
- 19:47Speaker 1: the stretch here is going to be whether or not
- 19:49Speaker 1: this will hurt Irvington.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Or help.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Jeremiah Smith's Heisman hopes because there is a world out
- 19:55Speaker 1: there where suddenly you're leaning on him so much, and
- 19:57Speaker 1: now he becomes the hero as opposed to saying, we'll
- 19:59Speaker 1: see if it ends up happening. I think I like
- 20:02Speaker 1: Ohio State to go on the road here. Next, Bear,
- 20:04Speaker 1: let's stick with one of your favorites here. We got
- 20:07Speaker 1: a little in-studio battle here, boys. Taylor's fighting Tar Heels,
- 20:14Speaker 1: playing host to the number one team, the Nation of
- 20:17Speaker 1: Miami Hurricanes, going down to UNC. Bear, you a little
- 20:20Speaker 1: nervous here?
- 20:22Speaker 4: What does Taylor think?
- 20:24Speaker 2: I mean, they lost to Syracuse. He thinks he wants
- 20:26Speaker 2: Belichick fired.
- 20:30Speaker 4: You could have ended that sentence after they lost to Syracuse.
- 20:35Speaker 1: So you think Miami just rolls here? Because some are
- 20:37Speaker 1: calling this a tricky spot.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Some are calling it a tricky spot, but when everybody's
- 20:44Speaker 4: calling it a tricky spot, is it really a tricky spot?
- 20:47Speaker 4: It's kind of like that Princess Bride type thing.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Like, I don't know.
- 20:52Speaker 4: It would worry me a little bit as a look-ahead spot,
- 20:54Speaker 4: but North Carolina can't stop the run at all. Defensively,
- 20:58Speaker 4: they're so bad. I would expect Mallory to have a
- 21:02Speaker 4: big game. Fletcher, if he's healthy, maybe get Pringle and
- 21:05Speaker 4: Lyle more involved. The psychology of it, you've seen a
- 21:10Speaker 4: bunch of four teams, I think it is, ranked one
- 21:14Speaker 4: or two. The last three weeks have gone down. From
- 21:19Speaker 4: that standpoint, yeah, but I looked as well. I, I
- 21:24Speaker 4: like looking at all this crap. Bill Belichick has won
- 21:27Speaker 4: three games at home since he's been there.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Tennessee state.
- 21:33Speaker 6: Yep.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Richmond. And I guess the four and eight Stanford team.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Yeah. It's like, yeah.
- 21:39Speaker 4: This is a hell of a lot better than that.
- 21:41Speaker 4: I think they do win. I think they get out.
- 21:43Speaker 4: And I think finally we'll, we'll get to talk about
- 21:46Speaker 4: the matchup that everybody wants to talk about. And let's
- 21:49Speaker 4: look forward to all off season, the return trip. by
- 21:52Speaker 4: next week.
- 21:52Speaker 2: T-Bob Bear, do you guys feel at all, because I do,
- 21:55Speaker 2: that Miami got its wake-up call against Florida State? It
- 21:58Speaker 2: was a game they probably should have lost. They looked
- 22:00Speaker 2: like a team against Pittsburgh, who's a pretty good team.
- 22:03Speaker 2: That game was over before it started, and I think
- 22:05Speaker 2: the Canes got that wake-up call against Florida State, and
- 22:08Speaker 2: I think they run the table. I think they're the
- 22:10Speaker 2: most talented team in the country. I'm not saying they're
- 22:13Speaker 2: going to win the national championship, but I think they
- 22:15Speaker 2: run the table here in the regular season, including wins
- 22:18Speaker 2: over North.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Carolina and the following week. at Notre Dame. I don't
- 22:21Speaker 3: think anyone could stop the Canes' offense. I just don't.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'm inclined to agree. I mean, you watch Malachi Toney
- 22:28Speaker 1: play football, you watch Darren Mintz throw a football, and
- 22:31Speaker 1: it's kind of hard to arrive at any other conclusion
- 22:34Speaker 1: right now. All right, so.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Can I just ask you something real quickly on what
- 22:39Speaker 4: Stu was saying there? We started off by talking about
- 22:44Speaker 4: trap game, look-ahead game, all that, and then we brought
- 22:49Speaker 4: up the Florida state game coaches and other players and
- 22:54Speaker 4: whomever in the building can warn you about all that
- 22:57Speaker 4: stuff and bringing it. And then it actually happens on
- 23:00Speaker 4: the field. Like what happened with Miami and Florida state,
- 23:03Speaker 4: like as a player, it's gotta be so much more
- 23:07Speaker 4: impactful to actually live through it and be like, Holy shit.
- 23:11Speaker 4: We actually did almost have all of our dreams and
- 23:13Speaker 4: goals potentially dashed that one game. We nearly did lose
- 23:17Speaker 4: everything they're telling us. is right. So there might be
- 23:20Speaker 4: a little bit more buy-in with that, and you probably
- 23:22Speaker 4: saw that as a result last week against Pitt.
- 23:25Speaker 5: No?
- 23:25Speaker 3: The knowledge that it can happen.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Having that knowledge, surviving it, getting through it, still getting
- 23:30Speaker 2: the win, a win they probably shouldn't have gotten, but
- 23:32Speaker 2: they got it anyway. But the knowledge of knowing, hey,
- 23:35Speaker 2: on any given Saturday, that could happen to us.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Yes, I think that's an advantage to the game.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I agree as a player. It does help because it's
- 23:44Speaker 1: a weird thing where something like a look-ahead spot, tricky spot, whatever,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you don't feel as if you're treating the game any differently.
- 23:52Speaker 1: You're still doing all your practice, all your workouts, all
- 23:54Speaker 1: your film study, all this sort of stuff. The impact
- 23:57Speaker 1: is like it's almost intangible or inexplicable And it creates
- 24:05Speaker 1: maybe in like little minor areas, like a bit of lackadaisyality.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I don't think that's a word, but a laziness, right?
- 24:13Speaker 1: We're like, maybe you don't do this extra rep here.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Maybe you just knock off maybe like 30 minutes early here.
- 24:19Speaker 1: And that kind of adds up over the week. Now
- 24:21Speaker 1: you don't.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Because you've already had your scare. You had your brush
- 24:25Speaker 1: with death. You were lucky to survive. So you better
- 24:27Speaker 1: take it seriously now. And you're not allowed another one
- 24:29Speaker 1: and nobody will give you grace or For another one.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So yeah, I agree with the wake-up call Miami take.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And look, we live in an era of football that
- 24:37Speaker 1: is different, and game plans matter more. Everything we've talked about.
- 24:40Speaker 1: But in this different era of football, guys. Thank God
- 24:43Speaker 1: that we still got classic rivalries like the Invesco QQQ
- 24:48Speaker 1: gridiron classic.
- 24:51Speaker 6: For those that don't know, that's Florida, Georgia now. It
- 24:54Speaker 6: used to be the world's largest outdoor cocktail party. And
- 24:58Speaker 6: I believe that's.
- 24:59Speaker 1: The name of it now.
- 25:00Speaker 3: What a travesty.
- 25:02Speaker 4: I didn't know that. I would have dropped a little.
- 25:04Speaker 4: I just wrote a nice little historic essay. on the
- 25:07Speaker 4: Florida-Georgia rivalry. I did not know that it was the
- 25:10Speaker 4: Invesco-QQQ rivalry game. I would have added a little line
- 25:15Speaker 4: in there about that and invoiced that.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I mean, listen, in a world where everything's sold and
- 25:19Speaker 2: I'm painted like a NASCAR every day on Fox Sports Radio,
- 25:22Speaker 2: I'm surprised it took this long.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I've got to be honest with you. Yeah, so this
- 25:28Speaker 1: is going to be Georgia-Florida, and it's not in Jacksonville
- 25:31Speaker 1: because the stadium's being renovated. So this is going to
- 25:33Speaker 1: be a Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta. That's a pretty big deal,
- 25:36Speaker 1: in my opinion here, because, like, that's going to lead
- 25:39Speaker 1: to a very heavy Georgia Bulldog crowd, and you have
- 25:42Speaker 1: two teams entering from different areas, right? Georgia, stunning loss
- 25:46Speaker 1: to Auburn. They get a bye week to regroup. They've
- 25:49Speaker 1: now learned some very harsh lessons. Florida, on the other hand,
- 25:52Speaker 1: had their own downturn, to which they responded fantastically to.
- 25:56Speaker 1: They beat Texas going into the bye week, and now
- 25:59Speaker 1: they had a little break.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Bear down.
- 26:02Speaker 1: How do you view these two teams coming in?
- 26:04Speaker 4: I think Georgia is a much better team. I think
- 26:08Speaker 4: Kirby will absolutely get this team ready to play. I'm
- 26:12Speaker 4: sure he has been riding them hard during the off week.
- 26:16Speaker 4: That was just self-inflicted garbage by Georgia, specifically Gunnar Stockton,
- 26:22Speaker 4: who I don't think was fully with it that entire game.
- 26:27Speaker 4: I think you're right. Getting this game in Atlanta, where
- 26:29Speaker 4: it's going to be primarily a– A Georgia crowd helps Florida.
- 26:34Speaker 4: We don't know what they're doing at the quarterback position.
- 26:36Speaker 4: I would imagine all things equal. It's got to be
- 26:39Speaker 4: Trammell Jones after how that Florida offense looked in Texas.
- 26:43Speaker 4: But I don't know if they're going to be able
- 26:45Speaker 4: to run over Georgia the way they have some other teams.
- 26:49Speaker 4: I think Georgia wins. I think Georgia potentially wins this
- 26:52Speaker 4: game very easily and in big fashion.
- 26:56Speaker 3: When you look at Georgia, are you guys concerned? Because
- 26:58Speaker 3: I am.
- 26:58Speaker 2: So they have the one loss. They lost to Auburn, obviously.
- 27:02Speaker 2: but they have after Florida. It's at Mississippi, and then
- 27:05Speaker 2: it's home against Missouri. Then they're at South Carolina. Do
- 27:09Speaker 2: both of you expect Georgia to run that, to run
- 27:12Speaker 2: through that regular season, the remainder of their schedule, which, again,
- 27:15Speaker 2: starts with Florida, neutral field, at Mississippi versus Missouri, at
- 27:20Speaker 2: South Carolina, home against Georgia Tech.
- 27:23Speaker 3: That's a win for them.
- 27:23Speaker 2: But are you concerned at all if Georgia can get
- 27:26Speaker 2: through this three-week gauntlet here, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri?
- 27:30Speaker 1: I think they run the table there, but even if
- 27:34Speaker 1: they don't, I can't see them getting more than one loss.
- 27:39Speaker 1: They're too consistent of a program. As Bear alluded to,
- 27:43Speaker 1: the Auburn game was the exception, not the rule. They
- 27:46Speaker 1: played damn near perfect football all season long. They had
- 27:49Speaker 1: the emotional hangover balance. They jump out to a 14-0 lead,
- 27:52Speaker 1: and then they see what happens when you can get
- 27:54Speaker 1: a little lackadaisical. And you make a few uncharacteristic mistakes
- 27:58Speaker 1: and how those can suddenly... stack up and, and, and
- 28:01Speaker 1: the other team is making great plays. And then you're
- 28:03Speaker 1: in a fight for your life. And even then you're
- 28:05Speaker 1: right there, but you make the one thought. So like,
- 28:07Speaker 1: I think George has learned those lessons by week. I, yeah,
- 28:09Speaker 1: I think Florida's in trouble here. Florida is a very, they're,
- 28:12Speaker 1: they're a fascinating team because they're probably the most swing
- 28:15Speaker 1: heavy team. and the entirety of college football in that
- 28:19Speaker 1: their strengths mean that when the game flow is going
- 28:23Speaker 1: their direction, they are capable of beating any team in
- 28:26Speaker 1: the entire country because of how they run the ball
- 28:29Speaker 1: and because of how that defense can play. But also
- 28:32Speaker 1: they have these sort of glaring weaknesses that like their
- 28:35Speaker 1: past defense, if you can unlock them through the air,
- 28:37Speaker 1: if you can build a lead on them, so they
- 28:38Speaker 1: have to abandon the run, it can snowball the opposite direction.
- 28:43Speaker 1: And while they can wear down almost anybody, I don't
- 28:46Speaker 1: know if I see them wearing down this Georgia defense
- 28:50Speaker 1: combined with the fact that I love Gunner Stockton. I
- 28:52Speaker 1: think last game was an aberration. I think Gunner Stockton
- 28:55Speaker 1: is going to be as locked in and hungry for revenge. Yeah,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I think Georgia rolls here.
- 28:58Speaker 4: I'm with Bear. I think the Ole Miss game could
- 29:01Speaker 4: be difficult. Yeah. We saw what Shambles did to them
- 29:05Speaker 4: last year in the bowl game. Are they better equipped
- 29:08Speaker 4: in the secondary now to deal with that? If they
- 29:12Speaker 4: are going to lose one, it'll be that. But I
- 29:16Speaker 4: still think they do get out of Ole Miss with
- 29:20Speaker 4: the win. But that has potential to be a 42-35
- 29:23Speaker 4: type of game as well because they're going to have
- 29:27Speaker 4: trouble slowing that offense down.
- 29:30Speaker 1: So every now and then there are teams out there
- 29:33Speaker 1: that you're kind of guilty of getting lost in the shuffle, right,
- 29:37Speaker 1: over the course of the year. And then you look up.
- 29:40Speaker 1: one day, they got a number next to their name,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and they're pretty damn good. And one of those teams
- 29:44Speaker 1: is going to be on a big stage this weekend.
- 29:46Speaker 1: That is the Arizona Wildcats. The 22nd ranked Arizona Wildcats
- 29:49Speaker 1: going on the road to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech.
- 29:54Speaker 4: Stu.
- 29:55Speaker 1: There's no chance in hell. You know, who's Arizona's quarterback
- 29:58Speaker 1: is to you.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Are you kidding me? No, I don't, I don't know
- 30:00Speaker 3: the Arizona Cardinals quarterback.
- 30:02Speaker 2: I mean, it's Noah Fafita and he's a fifth year
- 30:07Speaker 2: guy and he's, he's been very good.
- 30:09Speaker 1: He had, he had a great freshman year, bad sophomore.
- 30:11Speaker 1: He was very good last year. He's very good again
- 30:13Speaker 1: this year. Brent Brennan doing a lot with that program bear.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Are you studying up on the wildcats? Like, do you
- 30:19Speaker 1: have a great read on who this team's been this year? I, I, I,
- 30:22Speaker 1: I mean, they played BYU to a, To a pretty
- 30:25Speaker 1: close game. Yeah, it was a good game.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Earlier in the year. So I think that kind of
- 30:29Speaker 4: gives you a kind of a level as to where
- 30:32Speaker 4: they are. But I think the bigger story here is
- 30:36Speaker 4: just TCU. I mean, Texas Tech, rather. And the absolute
- 30:40Speaker 4: egg that they laid last week in the Brennan-Servis Bowl.
- 30:43Speaker 4: This is a team offensively. Like, I don't know what
- 30:47Speaker 4: you do now. Do you go to Tommy Castellanos? It
- 30:51Speaker 4: could be just... Hammond clearly is not the guy that
- 30:54Speaker 4: I think they thought they were getting a couple of
- 30:56Speaker 4: years back. Maybe the injury derailed him a little bit,
- 30:59Speaker 4: but this Tech offense has not been the same. Defensively,
- 31:03Speaker 4: clearly not the same. As we talked, you gave the
- 31:07Speaker 4: as a better as a handicapper before. I was shocked
- 31:11Speaker 4: to see this number down around three, three and a half.
- 31:15Speaker 4: That leads me to believe that the the odds makers
- 31:19Speaker 4: and the market really respects Arizona here and has their
- 31:23Speaker 4: doubts about the Red Raiders as well. It would not
- 31:27Speaker 4: surprise me to see Fafita and that offense go on
- 31:30Speaker 4: the road and win this game outright. I know that
- 31:33Speaker 4: Lubbock is a hard place to play, but the fact
- 31:35Speaker 4: that it's earlier in the day might help. Yeah, it's,
- 31:39Speaker 4: this is, This could be a second straight loss for Tech,
- 31:42Speaker 4: and I did not think anybody would predict that Texas Tech,
- 31:47Speaker 4: without playing Utah, without playing BYU, without having played Oklahoma
- 31:50Speaker 4: State yet, would pick up two losses by the first
- 31:53Speaker 4: day of November.
- 31:54Speaker 1: And I'm glad they used the word doubt, because... That
- 31:58Speaker 1: is the thing with Texas Tech this year. We just
- 32:00Speaker 1: spent time justifying Georgia's loss because I believe in them.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Unfortunately for Texas Tech, this wasn't like they had looked
- 32:08Speaker 1: really good and then they just had a bad day.
- 32:10Speaker 1: They haven't looked good at all, and then it felt
- 32:12Speaker 1: like they finally got exposed. And it's all about the
- 32:15Speaker 1: defense to me. I know the offense has been bad,
- 32:17Speaker 1: but why did Texas Tech win last year? Defense. What
- 32:19Speaker 1: did they spend more money than almost anybody in the
- 32:22Speaker 1: entire country on? Defense. And you look at the NFL,
- 32:26Speaker 1: Jacob Rodriguez, their linebacker last year, David Bailey are maybe
- 32:28Speaker 1: the two best defensive rookies in the entire league. Like
- 32:31Speaker 1: they are so clearly suffering from a vacuum of ability,
- 32:37Speaker 1: of leadership. And this is a bit of a final
- 32:40Speaker 1: stand for, for billionaire Cody Campbell and the Texas tech team,
- 32:45Speaker 1: as far as 2026 is concerned, because like, if they
- 32:49Speaker 1: go out there and they handle Arizona, then they can
- 32:52Speaker 1: prove to us that we were all wrong and they
- 32:54Speaker 1: are better. And, and, and, and we read it wrong,
- 32:56Speaker 1: but like I'm with bear. I, I, and the odds
- 32:58Speaker 1: makers seem to be as well. I don't believe in
- 33:01Speaker 1: this Texas technique. I think they've showed us enough of
- 33:03Speaker 1: who they are. And yeah, I, I kind of like
- 33:05Speaker 1: Brent Brendan and company to go in there and get
- 33:07Speaker 1: it up.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Since wake-up calls has been a theme to this show,
- 33:10Speaker 2: you don't think there's a bit of a wake-up call
- 33:12Speaker 2: for Tech here, Bear, just because they lost their last game?
- 33:16Speaker 4: I think there is. I just don't know if they're
- 33:18Speaker 4: capable of doing it.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Of waking up.
- 33:22Speaker 4: I'm not sure on the personnel here.
- 33:25Speaker 1: They're too sleepy, Stu. They're too sleepy. Real quick before
- 33:29Speaker 1: we go to break, we've got to tell you one
- 33:31Speaker 1: more because we talked about this team. Number 20, Northwestern,
- 33:35Speaker 1: going on the road. to Oregon. And it's crazy because again,
- 33:40Speaker 1: I feel like they're going to go to Austin and win.
- 33:43Speaker 3: So do I.
- 33:44Speaker 6: And like, I feel like they're like kind of like
- 33:45Speaker 6: a heavy favorite.
- 33:50Speaker 4: I don't know what belief there can be right now in,
- 33:54Speaker 4: in Oregon. It kind of reminds me like from a, again,
- 33:57Speaker 4: handicapping and look at the odds board. It reminds me
- 34:01Speaker 4: a little bit of the Chiefs last year where we
- 34:04Speaker 4: were still hanging on to our players. We had this
- 34:07Speaker 4: vision of what Patrick Holmes and the Chiefs and Andy
- 34:11Speaker 4: Reid were, and we really couldn't buy in that, you
- 34:13Speaker 4: know what, they really kind of stink on offense right
- 34:16Speaker 4: now and they're really not very good. That's what it
- 34:18Speaker 4: feels like with Oregon. The fact that Dante Moore is
- 34:21Speaker 4: gone and they stunk, we still have this... like vision
- 34:24Speaker 4: and selling, like they're the most talented team in the country.
- 34:26Speaker 4: And they brought their guys back to make one run
- 34:30Speaker 4: and their home. And they're flashy with the uniforms. We
- 34:32Speaker 4: love Dan Lanning as, as a head coach, but why
- 34:37Speaker 4: are there? Why should the, what have we seen this
- 34:40Speaker 4: year from Oregon that, that, leads me to believe that
- 34:44Speaker 4: they should be laying points against northwestern that's like i
- 34:47Speaker 4: cannot believe i just muttered that sentence.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I know but like.
- 34:51Speaker 4: Northwestern has been far more explosive on offense chip is
- 34:55Speaker 4: just having that team run the ball up and down
- 34:57Speaker 4: the field on anyone now i know oregon's defense has
- 35:00Speaker 4: been great but the fact that you couldn't get a
- 35:02Speaker 4: stop against illinois and get them off the field to
- 35:04Speaker 4: like that worries me like yeah maybe northwestern is going
- 35:08Speaker 4: to be one of these public underdogs and maybe they'll
- 35:11Speaker 4: go there and lose but They have brought it every week.
- 35:13Speaker 4: They were in the game at Indiana, very easily could
- 35:16Speaker 4: have won that game if it wasn't for a stupid
- 35:18Speaker 4: face mask penalty on a third and long. This Northwestern team,
- 35:22Speaker 4: if they win this game, then you're looking to assume they,
- 35:28Speaker 4: just assume they lose to Ohio State. I mean, they're
- 35:31Speaker 4: going to be 10 and 2. And who the hell,
- 35:34Speaker 4: but yeah, this great, great story. I mean, is Chip
- 35:38Speaker 4: going to win the Broyles Award?
- 35:40Speaker 3: He should win coach of the year.
- 35:42Speaker 2: It's interesting, Bear, it really is, because first off, when
- 35:46Speaker 2: you arrive at Indiana is the reigning national champion, no
- 35:49Speaker 2: sentence that comes out of anyone's mouth.
- 35:51Speaker 3: Should surprise anyone, okay? That's number one.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Number two is the way the schedule has broken here,
- 35:57Speaker 2: as you pointed out, Bear, as you alluded to, for
- 36:00Speaker 2: Northwestern makes them a really attractive team. Like, this could
- 36:03Speaker 2: be a playoff team when you consider that they're getting
- 36:06Speaker 2: Oregon without Dante Moore and they're getting Ohio State without
- 36:09Speaker 2: Julian Sayet. Like, it is all broken perfectly. for this
- 36:12Speaker 2: Northwestern team. We'll see if they can finish it off.
- 36:15Speaker 2: It would be fun to see them as someone who
- 36:18Speaker 2: has a daughter who went to Northwestern.
- 36:19Speaker 3: It would be great. she missed the good years.
- 36:22Speaker 2: And it'd be great to see the year after she leaves,
- 36:25Speaker 2: they make it to a college football playoff.
- 36:28Speaker 4: I think her college, I think her college experience probably
- 36:31Speaker 4: was pretty good though, with the amount of success.
- 36:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:34Speaker 1: A couple of national championships, no big deal.
- 36:36Speaker 2: You know, four straight trips to the final four, four
- 36:38Speaker 2: straight championship games, two championships, two rings.
- 36:41Speaker 4: Yeah. Good run.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I think, I think it's, I think the Chip Kelly
- 36:45Speaker 1: piece is really interesting because remember he took a step
- 36:48Speaker 1: back from being a head coach and Because he's like,
- 36:51Speaker 1: I want to just coach, like, football again, right? I
- 36:53Speaker 1: want to scheme. And talking to David Braun a couple
- 36:56Speaker 1: of days ago, because, you know, they're working to do
- 37:00Speaker 1: all these, like, old, like, wing T concepts, like, here
- 37:03Speaker 1: and there and whatnot. I was like, you know, is
- 37:05Speaker 1: this like being with, like, an old ancient, like, wizard
- 37:08Speaker 1: or lore master who's, like, blowing off the dusty tomes
- 37:11Speaker 1: and coming? And, yeah, he said they'll be in, like,
- 37:14Speaker 1: meetings and Chip will be like, yeah, you know. Back
- 37:17Speaker 1: in the 90s, the early 90s, they were having a
- 37:20Speaker 1: lot of success with this, and I think it could
- 37:21Speaker 1: fit our personnel. So, yeah, they just got chipped. They're like, Chip,
- 37:25Speaker 1: you don't have to raise money. You don't have to recruit.
- 37:28Speaker 1: You don't have to like, you have so much football
- 37:30Speaker 1: offensive knowledge. You just get in there and you try
- 37:33Speaker 1: to create something that works best for our players. And
- 37:35Speaker 1: it's working fantastically well right now.
- 37:38Speaker 4: All he wants to do. And I'm glad you said
- 37:41Speaker 4: that overall, because it's kind of not only with Northwestern,
- 37:45Speaker 4: but it's been a theme this year. Like if you
- 37:46Speaker 4: look at national averages in like number of plays per game,
- 37:51Speaker 4: like explosive plays, things like that, like, all those numbers
- 37:57Speaker 4: are down. So we had that era where it was
- 38:00Speaker 4: just throw the ball, spread offenses a million times for 48,
- 38:04Speaker 4: 45 games, kind of coming back around a little bit
- 38:08Speaker 4: where we're seeing defenses kind of reign supreme. And we're
- 38:13Speaker 4: getting maybe look at Miami last year, look at Indiana
- 38:15Speaker 4: last year, push came to shove. Like they were power
- 38:18Speaker 4: run based teams who won games at the line of scrimmage.
- 38:22Speaker 4: So this kind of stuff, this, this kind of like a,
- 38:26Speaker 4: bully ball uh bass kicks ass type of ball it's
- 38:29Speaker 4: coming back into fashion.
- 38:31Speaker 1: All right uh it's gonna break when we get back
- 38:33Speaker 1: we got bears metal stand and with some coaching firings
- 38:37Speaker 1: we got some coaching discussions and openings and just wait
- 38:41Speaker 1: until i tell you why uh being a head college
- 38:44Speaker 1: football coach is just the greatest single job in the
- 38:46Speaker 1: entire world next here in the college football show it's
- 38:48Speaker 1: two guts and the bear.
- 39:09Speaker 3: What's happening, y'all?
- 39:10Speaker 1: Welcome back to the College Football Show. It's Sue Gotts
- 39:11Speaker 1: and the Bears. It's time for Bears Metal Stand.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Bear, what do you got cooked up for us this week?
- 39:16Speaker 3: He's not terribly confident. I don't like that.
- 39:18Speaker 4: No, no. I'm okay. I'm pretty confident with these.
- 39:22Speaker 1: He's like Russia in the Winter Olympics. It's a fucking disaster.
- 39:25Speaker 1: So cheese killing people.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Yes.
- 39:28Speaker 1: None of the infrastructure is built out.
- 39:29Speaker 3: Come on, bear. You got this bear. Not your first
- 39:31Speaker 3: rodeo there.
- 39:32Speaker 2: I mean, listen, I know you're a little bit cold
- 39:35Speaker 2: right now, but you can get hot and you're going
- 39:36Speaker 2: to get hot and you're going to do it right now.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Okay. Let's go.
- 39:39Speaker 4: We'll be, we'll be, we'll be okay. A lot of
- 39:42Speaker 4: time in full disclosure, a lot of like last week,
- 39:45Speaker 4: I kind of got caught off guard and I did
- 39:47Speaker 4: not have like, things like ready in the holster to
- 39:51Speaker 4: fire for the medal stamps. I feel I was not
- 39:54Speaker 4: caught off guard this week. I am ready. I got
- 39:56Speaker 4: three games that I like.
- 39:58Speaker 3: You're like the Canes. That won't happen again. I mean,
- 40:00Speaker 3: you've been through it.
- 40:00Speaker 1: I had a wake-up call.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Very good. Bronze medal on the podium. Notre Dame laying
- 40:09Speaker 4: the 30.5 against Navy. I don't know how Navy scores.
- 40:13Speaker 4: This is not a great. addition of an AB team.
- 40:16Speaker 4: Notre Dame, I know you've got the game against Miami
- 40:18Speaker 4: next week, but up at Foxborough, this feels like, you
- 40:23Speaker 4: go back the last three years, what they've done to
- 40:25Speaker 4: service academies, they've won every single one of them by
- 40:28Speaker 4: at least 35. This feels like a 49-10 type of game.
- 40:34Speaker 4: Silver podium?
- 40:35Speaker 5: Yep.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I know you're dialed in on Georgia Southern Appalachian State, right?
- 40:43Speaker 4: That's a name that's at the top of your....
- 40:47Speaker 1: Emotional letdown for App State here, Bear.
- 40:49Speaker 4: It's a massive letdown for App State, and you're going
- 40:52Speaker 4: on the road, and I bet this earlier in the
- 40:54Speaker 4: week at minus four and a half. It's moved to five,
- 40:57Speaker 4: five and a half right now. I would still bet it.
- 41:00Speaker 4: You got App State, which just handed JMU their first loss.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Now you're on the road at Georgia Southern, who's a
- 41:06Speaker 4: decent team, taking money, their favorite. It's telling you everything
- 41:10Speaker 4: you need to know here. I laid the points with
- 41:13Speaker 4: Georgia Southern. And I laid three and a half with,
- 41:16Speaker 4: with Iowa, uh, against Wisconsin. I know it has not
- 41:20Speaker 4: been the trend this year for these, uh, these ranked
- 41:24Speaker 4: teams going on the road to unranked teams and losing, uh,
- 41:28Speaker 4: when they're an underdog, like we've seen these teams win
- 41:30Speaker 4: more often than not, but you look at what Wisconsin
- 41:33Speaker 4: has done, uh, the last few years against Iowa point totals, 10, six,
- 41:39Speaker 4: 10 and zero. Like, I don't think they're going to
- 41:41Speaker 4: score many points. It's going to be a, Typical Kirk
- 41:44Speaker 4: Ferentz-type game. Iowa hasn't lost to Minnesota and Wisconsin in
- 41:48Speaker 4: the same year since 2014. You go back since 2020,
- 41:52Speaker 4: these toss-up-type games, plus 3.5, minus 3.5 either way, they're
- 41:59Speaker 4: 24-6 in these games. So Kirk Ferentz wins these types
- 42:01Speaker 4: of games. I think they blow out Wisconsin and win 17-7.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Oh, that is a blowout.
- 42:10Speaker 5: Yes.
- 42:11Speaker 3: All right.
- 42:12Speaker 4: There it is.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Poll question. Put on the poll. Does Notre Dame hate
- 42:17Speaker 1: the troops? I never thought about it that way, but
- 42:19Speaker 1: it's a good point. They're just beating up on these
- 42:22Speaker 1: service academies every single year.
- 42:24Speaker 3: I mean, me and Mikey have gotten on Golic for years.
- 42:26Speaker 3: They're not nice.
- 42:27Speaker 2: They don't respect the troops the way we do. Navy,
- 42:29Speaker 2: the Naval Academy, all the cadets there.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Thank you. for your service. We appreciate it. And Notre
- 42:35Speaker 3: Dame should be nicer.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Mike said when he hit, when Mike played at Notre
- 42:38Speaker 2: Dame and he would tackle a guy from Notre Dame.
- 42:41Speaker 2: He would extend his arm out to help him out,
- 42:43Speaker 2: but that didn't keep him from beating them by 55 points.
- 42:47Speaker 1: I mean, so the goalie hate the troops and Notre Dame.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:51Speaker 1: I can't wait to.
- 42:54Speaker 4: See the troops next week, by the way, we're big
- 42:56Speaker 4: new kickoff going to West point. It's going to be awesome. Nice. Oh,
- 43:00Speaker 4: hell yeah, dude.
- 43:01Speaker 1: All right, Stu. So I put together this next segment
- 43:03Speaker 1: for you because nobody is better than At or nobody celebrates,
- 43:09Speaker 1: not better. Nobody celebrates making more money doing less than
- 43:16Speaker 1: our guys do.
- 43:17Speaker 4: Right.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Like that is that is the goal that we should
- 43:19Speaker 1: all have.
- 43:19Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Yes, I appreciate the compliment. Go ahead.
- 43:23Speaker 1: That is why college football, being a college football coach,
- 43:26Speaker 1: the greatest job ever. So Mike Loxley gets fired this week.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Dave Doran gets fired this week. Dave Aranda gets fired
- 43:32Speaker 1: this week. I put together the numbers on how much
- 43:35Speaker 1: these guys got paid per win when their buyouts are
- 43:39Speaker 1: factored in. So Dave Doran, not that offensive. He's there
- 43:43Speaker 1: for 14 years. He had a lot of success. It
- 43:47Speaker 1: just never quite crested every time that you thought it would.
- 43:51Speaker 1: But when you look, they're going to owe him $ 10
- 43:53Speaker 1: million in his buyout. Dave Doering made $ 615, 000 per win
- 43:57Speaker 1: at NC State.
- 43:57Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 44:01Speaker 1: And that's the not offensive number.
- 44:03Speaker 4: Right.
- 44:04Speaker 1: If you hear that, you think that's crazy.
- 44:05Speaker 5: Yes.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Let's go to Mike Loxley. All right.
- 44:08Speaker 3: At Maryland. I can't wait for this.
- 44:10Speaker 1: So he finishes 39 and 54 at Maryland.
- 44:14Speaker 4: All right.
- 44:15Speaker 1: With the buyout, they paid him $ 44 million at Maryland.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Mike Loxley made $ 1. 15 million per win.
- 44:26Speaker 4: How many of those wins were against frigging Kauzan or?
- 44:28Speaker 1: Hey, you got to love it.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:31Speaker 2: I got to tell you, that is a lot of
- 44:32Speaker 2: money for a Duke's Mayo win.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I mean.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Dave Aranda, fired after seven seasons at Baylor. He ended
- 44:41Speaker 1: up 40-40. Not terrible. Not good either. No, not good either.
- 44:47Speaker 1: So with his buyout, he's going to be up to
- 44:50Speaker 1: $ 40 million. He's a million dollars per win as well.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Shout out to Aranda. Here's what's crazy, though. It's the
- 44:54Speaker 1: guys who could be fired. So right now, Lincoln Riley
- 44:58Speaker 1: at USC is pushing... damn near two million dollars uh
- 45:04Speaker 1: per win when when you look at his tenure as
- 45:07Speaker 1: trojans he has reportedly a 70 million dollar buyout wow
- 45:14Speaker 1: if he gets fired this year guys we could be
- 45:16Speaker 1: talking about over three million dollars a win potentially.
- 45:19Speaker 3: I gotta be honest i'd want to be fired.
- 45:23Speaker 5: Where's the motivation to work like what are we what
- 45:26Speaker 5: are we talking about Just keep living out there in L.A.,
- 45:30Speaker 5: making three, you know, however many million a year as
- 45:32Speaker 5: they pay me out over time.
- 45:34Speaker 3: Yes, and who cares what anyone says in the future? Hey,
- 45:36Speaker 3: that guy was overrated. He wasn't that good. Caleb Williams,
- 45:39Speaker 3: one-trick pony. Who cares?
- 45:41Speaker 1: You got $ 70 million, man. Go sit on the beach.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Speaking of, you know, glass houses and such, I did
- 45:49Speaker 1: the math on Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly, with his buyout
- 45:53Speaker 1: factored in, $ 50 million buyout earned. 2.75 million dollars per win.
- 45:59Speaker 7: At lsu amazing let's go bk good job what a
- 46:05Speaker 7: fucking legend almost three million win uh now last question
- 46:09Speaker 7: here who's next and this has nothing to do with
- 46:11Speaker 7: money next to go on who's gonna get their pink
- 46:15Speaker 7: slips next bear i think prime at colorado feels like
- 46:17Speaker 7: it's completely over and then what about dabbo at clemson
- 46:20Speaker 7: bear I.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Think if Dabo hadn't done what he did at Clemson
- 46:27Speaker 4: in winning national titles and elevating them, and coupled with
- 46:32Speaker 4: the price tag wasn't so high, they probably would be
- 46:36Speaker 4: seriously considering doing that right now. He's 7-10, I think,
- 46:42Speaker 4: in the last couple of years against Power 4 teams.
- 46:45Speaker 4: It's a program that hasn't evolved with the times. Like,
- 46:47Speaker 4: I wonder, like, if Dabo gets– is he going to
- 46:50Speaker 4: get another, like, another job? Like, I don't know. Like,
- 46:54Speaker 4: in this era of college football, like, that'd be the
- 46:56Speaker 4: reason why Clemson is getting rid of him. And if
- 46:58Speaker 4: Clemson's going to get rid of him, then why would you– like,
- 47:01Speaker 4: he was a great coach for the era that he
- 47:03Speaker 4: had there, but we'll see. I don't know about Deion.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Really?
- 47:07Speaker 4: Really. I think it's run its course. I think they
- 47:11Speaker 4: were relevant. But they might just say, hey, it's Deion,
- 47:15Speaker 4: and that still carries clout, and people still mention Colorado
- 47:19Speaker 4: because Deion. But that was awful in the second half
- 47:24Speaker 4: last week. I mean, to go up into the locker room,
- 47:28Speaker 4: to go up and then allow, what, 37 in the
- 47:30Speaker 4: second half, whatever the hell they were, and get shut out. Like, I...
- 47:35Speaker 4: I think that situation is beyond, but again, who knows?
- 47:38Speaker 4: They may find value in just the name power. I'll
- 47:40Speaker 4: give you one that might be Sonny Dykes.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 4: That might be one. The coordinator high didn't go over
- 47:49Speaker 4: too well. It's been all downhill since the title game appearance.
- 47:55Speaker 4: That might be one to potentially take a look at.
- 47:59Speaker 4: if such markets exist somewhere.
- 48:00Speaker 3: I have a place for Dabo to go. It's Rutgers.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Greg Sciano, he's out. There's no coming back. When you
- 48:05Speaker 2: lose to UMass, there is no coming back from that.
- 48:07Speaker 4: No.
- 48:08Speaker 1: I can't wait to do the per-win numbers on Sciano's
- 48:13Speaker 1: second tenure at Rutgers. He should retire.
- 48:15Speaker 4: They should all retire. I want that for Monday.
- 48:20Speaker 3: All right, guys.
- 48:21Speaker 4: There it is.
- 48:23Speaker 1: It's another college football show with Stu Gatz and the
- 48:26Speaker 1: Bear with your special guest, T-Bob A-Bear. And, yeah, I
- 48:30Speaker 1: hope everybody has a great weekend. May you win all
