- 0:00This is a Tabernacle tidbit, a bite sized Tabernacle talk of 5
- 0:05minutes or less to help you get through your day when you only
- 0:09have a little bit of time. We hope this helps you to know
- 0:11Christ, groan His Word, and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's get started. Welcome back to Tabernacle
- 0:18Tidbits. Today we are in Second Timothy
- 0:20chapter 4 and verse #16 we're going through the apostle Paul's
- 0:24last letter, if you will, kind of his last will and testament
- 0:28that he writes to his son in the faith, Timothy.
- 0:30It's the last letter we have of his before he dies.
- 0:33And he tells Timothy this in Second Timothy 4 and verse 16.
- 0:38Here at the end of the letter, he says, at my first defense, no
- 0:42one stood by me, but everyone deserted me.
- 0:46May it not be counted against them?
- 0:50Going to read that one more time.
- 0:52At my first offense no one stood by me, but everyone deserted me.
- 0:57May it not be counted against them Here as Timothy is recall
- 1:04or sorry, not Timothy. As Paul is recalling to Timothy,
- 1:08he says this when I was here on trial before Nero in Rome, I'm
- 1:15giving a defense of why I have appealed to Caesar, why I am
- 1:21imprisoned here in Rome. And when I gave the answer for
- 1:25why I was there, he says there were there were no other
- 1:29Christians that were with me at that point.
- 1:32He says no one stood by me, but everyone deserted me.
- 1:38They all left. They they separated connection
- 1:42with me, if you will. They they abandoned me.
- 1:46For many of us, that might be where we end the verse when we
- 1:51have times where maybe we needed a friend, we needed someone who
- 1:54would be that moral support for us.
- 1:56We needed that encouragement and people were just gone.
- 2:00And so we would say with Paul, when I needed people, no one
- 2:05stood with me, but everyone deserted me and that would be
- 2:09where we would end. But then I love what Paul says
- 2:13at the end of the verse. He says may it not be counted
- 2:16against them. He says I don't want other
- 2:19people here for counted against them.
- 2:22This is like determined by mathematical process to to
- 2:26reckon, to calculate, to estimate or to give careful
- 2:31thought to a matter that there wouldn't be that anyone would
- 2:36think a certain way of someone or be of the opinion about
- 2:40someone. He says I don't, even though I
- 2:42was abandoned by people, I don't want that to be what defines
- 2:48them. He says all of us have tough
- 2:52days, all of us have times where we should be stepping up and we
- 2:57shy away. But Paul says, I don't want you,
- 3:03Timothy, and I don't even want the Lord to hold it against
- 3:07these people for having, if you will, an off day for having a
- 3:11time of failure. Now, this is a different Paul
- 3:16than we interacted with in the book of Acts when John Mark
- 3:21abandoned Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey,
- 3:27that then on the second missionary journey, Barnabas
- 3:30wants to bring John Mark again with him.
- 3:34And Paul says no, he abandoned this once, he'll do it again.
- 3:37And so he even separates from Barnabas, not just John Mark,
- 3:41and he goes with Silas on the second missionary journey.
- 3:45And I think it is amazing now that Paul has reached a point of
- 3:49maturity in his life where he doesn't have to have vengeance
- 3:54for every act of sin and failure and betrayal that people have
- 4:01against him. That is a spirit of God.
- 4:05Change inside of a person for your eye.
- 4:09We might not be there yet, but I want you to know that looking at
- 4:13Paul's life, this wasn't always who Paul was.
- 4:16And so that can give us hope that God can change you and I,
- 4:19that we don't have to be angry, vindictive, vengeful people who
- 4:25always have to get even with someone else, but God can spark
- 4:29forgiveness in us. That just like Jesus on the
- 4:32cross said, Father, forgive them because they don't know what
- 4:35they're doing. Just like Stephen being stoned
- 4:39at the feet of Paul as the religious leaders of the day
- 4:43were killing Stephen for what he said about Jesus and Stephen
- 4:46looking up and seeing Jesus, Enthrone said, forgive them
- 4:51because they don't know what they're doing here.
- 4:53Paul says, these people that wronged me, they should have
- 4:56stood by me. They should have not abandoned
- 4:58me, he says. But I don't want it to be
- 5:01counted against them. I don't want people's opinions
- 5:05of these people. I don't want people's opinions
- 5:09of these individuals to be any less because of what they've
- 5:13done, he says. I have loved and I've forgiven
- 5:17them. And if you will, I'm not going
- 5:20to stand on the witness stand of other people's life and say,
- 5:25yes, look at these people, they failed, they messed up.
- 5:28And so, you know, throw the book at him.
- 5:30He says I'm not going to do that for you and I today.
- 5:33Will We choose to walk in forgiveness that we're not going
- 5:37to hold a grudge against someone else, but we are going to
- 5:41operate with the love and forgiveness that Jesus has for
- 5:44us. Hoe that would be an
- 5:46encouragement to you today. See you next time.
