- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to A Different Worldview with Daryl and Kadeem, a
- 0:03Speaker 1: production of the Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. And
- 0:14Speaker 1: here we are. Back again. Episode three.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Shit show continues, folks. A Different Worldview with Daryl and Kadeem.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We have not been canceled yet.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Not yet.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And we haven't dropped yet, so yeah, that's good. Well,
- 0:26Speaker 1: technically we haven't dropped yet, but.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Well, by the time folks listen to this, yeah. Anything
- 0:30Speaker 2: is possible. So, here we are.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Episode three.
- 0:37Speaker 2: And we're going to do things a little differently.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Okay.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We should set that up. So, for everybody who's listening, first,
- 0:44Speaker 2: thank you for listening.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Thank you. Welcome. Here we are. Thank you. Here we are.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Coming on with us from the very beginning. And those watching, hello.
- 0:53Speaker 2: We are making this up, but we're doing things a
- 0:54Speaker 2: little different. So now we're not going to watch each episode.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Live.
- 1:00Speaker 2: We have already watched the episodes and now we're just
- 1:02Speaker 2: going to talk about it. And in future episodes, not
- 1:06Speaker 2: for today, we're going to have guests join us from
- 1:08Speaker 2: each episode.
- 1:08Speaker 1: They will sit right here. They will join in and
- 1:10Speaker 1: then they will talk. Yes.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Instead of us all watching.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. So watch party-ish. Yes.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Watch party-ish. And let me also just, do you still.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Have this hat? I do not.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And these were not our baseball hats.
- 1:27Speaker 1: No. These were gift hats that we got at some place.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And funny, we've done this twice now. We've gone out
- 1:36Speaker 2: and had on a different world paraphernalia. And people walk
- 1:39Speaker 2: in and it's like we're advertising.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Look who's here. Yeah. Walked into the soul food joint
- 1:44Speaker 1: with a different world jacket and different world shirt. And
- 1:46Speaker 1: everybody's like, hey, it's the guys from a different world. Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I guess it is since we got it all over us.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But I thought, one, because I still had this, I
- 1:57Speaker 2: wanted to pull it out. And two, only because our
- 2:00Speaker 2: colors and then the Jordans. And the interesting thing, these
- 2:06Speaker 2: are the, when they talk about the retro band Jordans,
- 2:12Speaker 2: these are the ones that they reference that you can get.
- 2:16Speaker 2: But these aren't actually.
- 2:20Speaker 2: The shoes that were banned that actually were not banned.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You know the story, right?
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Too much, not enough white.
- 2:26Speaker 2: But that part, but as the lore goes, because even
- 2:36Speaker 2: the first ones that Mike wore were not like these.
- 2:40Speaker 2: But they, one, they could say they didn't have enough
- 2:42Speaker 2: white in them, but technically the league didn't ban them.
- 2:47Speaker 2: They said they were not uniform. So if everybody was
- 2:51Speaker 2: wearing them, but because all the other guys had the
- 2:54Speaker 2: shoes with the white in them and his didn't, that's
- 2:57Speaker 2: what made the issue. So if everyone had chosen... to switch,
- 3:03Speaker 2: they could have. But instead, Nike was like, we're paying
- 3:06Speaker 2: the fine just to let Mike wear them. And if
- 3:08Speaker 2: you go back and look, so the first ones are,
- 3:11Speaker 2: and they weren't Air Forces, but they were something else. Yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 2: they were close to it. They had like a big
- 3:17Speaker 2: swoosh on them that were black and red, right? And
- 3:21Speaker 2: I don't think Nike ever made those ever again, right?
- 3:26Speaker 2: But then these have the Air Jordan on them. But
- 3:30Speaker 2: by the time they made these, this version for Mike,
- 3:33Speaker 2: which he wore with red laces in them as well,
- 3:36Speaker 2: the black and red laces, they weren't Air Jordans. They
- 3:40Speaker 2: hadn't made them yet. So you don't have an Air
- 3:42Speaker 2: Jordan logo. So with these, with the Air Jordan logo,
- 3:46Speaker 2: even though they call these The band ones that they
- 3:50Speaker 2: now sell, they're not exactly like, but they're close enough.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And so since they all work together, I just, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 2: just had to break that down.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Giving a little bit of knowledge there, a little bit
- 4:00Speaker 1: of sneaker knowledge from OG Sneakerhead.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And since, you know, we're all about sneakers, I just.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Not today.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Not today, yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Not today. I'm not sure. I don't know. You ain't
- 4:11Speaker 1: got to worry about it, man. Don't worry about it.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Tell them
- 4:18Speaker 1: not to worry about it.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I like the fact that you are so confident that
- 4:21Speaker 2: you just came out in public wearing those.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Anything. Anything? Anything. I ain't scared. You have. Shit.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And look, I didn't know you was going to perform
- 4:32Speaker 2: a magic escape act, too, because you're wearing the.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Now you see me. You got the straight jacket with
- 4:40Speaker 2: the buckles. You just bringing it all, player.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I love this. It's a straight jacket. I'll be out
- 4:44Speaker 1: of this shit and going while he's still talking. Watch me. Oh, goodness.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Okay. Let's pull it together. So, let's start talking about,
- 4:55Speaker 2: because there's so much to unpack from the pilot, which was,
- 5:05Speaker 2: even though they, The pilot for A Different World was
- 5:08Speaker 2: not the first episode that aired.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Correct.
- 5:12Speaker 2: The pilot was the second episode.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Even though it was the first one shot.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And you say that, why? And I say, we weren't
- 5:19Speaker 1: in it. They had shot the pilot and two other
- 5:23Speaker 1: episodes before Jasmine and myself were cast.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:28Speaker 1: So what they did was they shot a little scene,
- 5:33Speaker 1: a pickup, a couple of pickup scenes. with Jasmine and
- 5:36Speaker 1: I interacting with Lisa, the LaCroix, Denise's character, and edited
- 5:42Speaker 1: those into the original pilot that they shot, which was
- 5:48Speaker 1: crazy because then the pilot became number two. Marissa's character
- 5:53Speaker 1: didn't show up in the first episode.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Which is weird because she was in the pilot.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Why she wasn't in the second episode? I think that was,
- 6:02Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. Because in the pilot,
- 6:04Speaker 2: she moves in as a roommate. Right. But in the
- 6:07Speaker 2: first episode, is Whitley going to be roommates with Jaleesa?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Is Denise going to be? Denise is going to be
- 6:16Speaker 2: roommates with Jaleesa. Jaleesa or Whitley.
- 6:19Speaker 1: That's right. And she chooses Whitley. Denise. Jaleesa. One of
- 6:26Speaker 1: these names is going to be right. Just keep going.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I'll just keep going through the Rolodex. One of them
- 6:30Speaker 1: is going to land. Right. Yeah, so the girls had
- 6:32Speaker 1: to figure out who was going to be roommates, and
- 6:34Speaker 1: then they brought a third one in. And that seems
- 6:40Speaker 1: like the first show. It really felt like the first show.
- 6:43Speaker 1: It had It had books. It had a classroom.
- 6:46Speaker 2: It had the first classroom because there's no classroom in
- 6:49Speaker 2: the first episode.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Not even a book. No mention of school.
- 6:52Speaker 2: No.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Right. So you would think, what are we watching again?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Just the dude going, hey, how you doing? What the
- 6:59Speaker 1: hell was this? How you start a show with this?
- 7:03Speaker 1: Just looking like it was it. It wasn't Wonder Room.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Wasn't Wonderama.
- 7:14Speaker 2: What was it when they would look into the mirror
- 7:16Speaker 2: and she would say, I see this one. I see
- 7:18Speaker 2: that one. All the kids, uh, uh, Oh my gosh,
- 7:23Speaker 2: the children's show. Because I'm thinking Wonderama was Bob McAllister.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Bob McAllister, no, they all sat around. Oh, I remember that. Yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 1: she would look in there and say she saw everybody.
- 7:33Speaker 1: She never said fucking Kadeem. She never said Kadeem. I
- 7:36Speaker 1: didn't hear Daryl. All the time I heard of Kadeem
- 7:38Speaker 1: on that shit.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I see Joey, I see Emily, I see Sarah.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I'm like, what about me? I'm here.
- 7:45Speaker 2: And for those at home, when they called and then
- 7:48Speaker 2: you really thought she was seen. She looked into the
- 7:50Speaker 2: little mirror. It's going to come to us.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Chat. Get on a chat. Do we have a chat?
- 7:55Speaker 1: Maybe we have a chat. I don't know. That's what
- 7:58Speaker 1: the kids say. So, yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 2: So, from that one, when you were looking into it,
- 8:02Speaker 2: we're now going to number two. Yes. Now, number two,
- 8:06Speaker 2: of the things that were notable about number two, just
- 8:10Speaker 2: to start, it's a spinoff of The Cosby Show.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 2: And it's a pilot. It's directed by Jay Sandrin.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Legendary.
- 8:19Speaker 2: For folks who don't know Jay Sanders, this man directed
- 8:24Speaker 2: most of the Cosby show. I think he directed most
- 8:27Speaker 2: of the episodes, but he was one of the most
- 8:31Speaker 2: prolific and successful television directors of all time. And I
- 8:38Speaker 2: want to say he was probably the favorite director on Cosby,
- 8:44Speaker 2: but he directed so many other legendary shows. television shows.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And so Jay directed the pilot, even though it was
- 8:53Speaker 2: episode two, but it's significant because there are rules in
- 8:58Speaker 2: the director's guild. If you direct the pilot, you are
- 9:00Speaker 2: attached to the series for life. And Jay was so kind,
- 9:07Speaker 2: had the opportunity to have dinner with Jay, be invited
- 9:10Speaker 2: to his house, and he loved to say the house
- 9:13Speaker 2: in the Beverly Hills flat. He was like, this is
- 9:14Speaker 2: the house Cosby built.
- 9:17Speaker 1: That part. And just could not be kinder or nice, right?
- 9:23Speaker 2: So, Jay Sanders, the fact that he directed the pilot
- 9:27Speaker 2: of A Different World, I had no clue.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So, start there. And then second, you said you noticed
- 9:34Speaker 2: something about the writers for it.
- 9:36Speaker 1: There's three writers. Yeah. I think I lost the names,
- 9:41Speaker 1: but I know John Marcus. Yes. I think was one. Yep.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Carmen Finestra? Yep. was another and the third one I
- 9:50Speaker 1: can't see but I was like wow I never I
- 9:52Speaker 1: don't remember the last time I saw three writers names
- 9:57Speaker 1: on a pilot episode or an episode of television usually
- 9:59Speaker 1: it's written by and then directed by but this had
- 10:03Speaker 1: three writers for the pilot and I was like That's interesting.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And then you started hollering, stop, don't talk until we
- 10:08Speaker 1: get to the podcast.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Because that's the thing. Again, Kadeem has been saying this
- 10:13Speaker 2: for months, that he's not going to talk to me
- 10:15Speaker 2: because of the podcast unless somebody's paying us.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Because you don't want to waste all your best stuff.
- 10:19Speaker 1: On just me. Yeah.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So when you start talking before we get to the podcast,
- 10:23Speaker 2: I got to tell you to shut up.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true.
- 10:25Speaker 2: So that you can stop wasting all the stuff we're
- 10:27Speaker 2: doing here for the podcast in the car.
- 10:29Speaker 1: On the way over. You caught me. You caught me.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So the third writer is Matt Williams.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Oh, wow. Now, between you and me, who would you.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Say, if we had to talk about writers, directors, actors,
- 10:43Speaker 2: who do you think is more, whose well goes deeper
- 10:48Speaker 2: of knowledge of actors, writers, and directors between the two.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Of us? I would say mine. I won't argue. I'm
- 10:58Speaker 1: getting set up, y'all. I'm getting set up, y'all.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I love how you said it so gingerly.
- 11:05Speaker 5: I would say mine. I dare that shit look hot.
- 11:11Speaker 5: That water look hot. That water look hot. Why am
- 11:14Speaker 5: I going to get in this water? He's asking me
- 11:17Speaker 5: the question.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Because I can feel the rake. I can feel the rake.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm going to step on it. Bam. Oh, you motherfucker.
- 11:25Speaker 2: So, I want to tell you that what's so amazing is,
- 11:32Speaker 2: I believe the exact quote was, you won't believe it,
- 11:35Speaker 2: the pie was written by three dudes.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Like, Carmen, right, shit. It was like, three dudes. Like, yes,
- 11:40Speaker 1: it just so happened.
- 11:41Speaker 2: To be John Marcus, right? John Marcus, who also went
- 11:44Speaker 2: on to write Larry David.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Wow. I'm sorry, Larry Sanders. Oh, Larry Sanders Show. Larry
- 11:51Speaker 1: Sanders Show. Not Larry David. Close.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Larry Sanders Show. And, Carmen and Matt, so you will remember,
- 12:00Speaker 2: made the Cosby connection.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Jay Sandridge, one of the.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Directors for Cosby, but so was this guy named Tony Singletary.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Oh, I know Tony. And Tony, when there.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Was trouble for our first season, they sent Tony to
- 12:15Speaker 2: direct episodes of A Different World.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Yep. And Tony came in and it was great working
- 12:20Speaker 1: with Tony. Had a good time with Tony, yep.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Fast forward a year or so later Tony always vacationed
- 12:28Speaker 2: in New England, in Massachusetts. And Tony said, hey, I
- 12:32Speaker 2: do this summer stock every year up in Massachusetts. And
- 12:40Speaker 2: I'd love for you to marry in Massachusetts. Would you
- 12:43Speaker 2: come and do this summer place? And I went with
- 12:48Speaker 2: Tempest Bledsoe. We did a play together called Love. But
- 12:52Speaker 2: also Carmen Finestra and Matt Williams came and they performed
- 12:56Speaker 2: as well.
- 12:57Speaker 1: And you came. To Boston? Yes.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Marion, Massachusetts. Not to Boston. You came because you drove
- 13:06Speaker 2: all the way up there because this is where Geraldo
- 13:09Speaker 2: vacationed as well. And we had a big dinner after
- 13:14Speaker 2: the shows. And you came to watch us all perform.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 13:19Speaker 2: And I remember the night when you came up because
- 13:21Speaker 2: the big thing was at the end of this play, Love,
- 13:27Speaker 2: The character that I was playing had to get on
- 13:29Speaker 2: this motorcycle and the damn thing wouldn't start. It always
- 13:31Speaker 2: worked in rehearsal. It wouldn't start during the actual show.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And I'd throw out some ad lib and, you know,
- 13:39Speaker 2: next on Geraldo because Geraldo lived there. And Geraldo actually
- 13:42Speaker 2: came to see the place, all that. So we were
- 13:45Speaker 2: all together that night. So you were actually at a
- 13:48Speaker 2: dinner table with Carmen and Matt because they were out
- 13:52Speaker 2: there performing.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And Carmen....
- 13:56Speaker 2: And Matt and John are credited with writing the pilot
- 14:01Speaker 2: for A Different World. And I believe were writers in
- 14:04Speaker 2: the first season. They only went on to be the
- 14:06Speaker 2: co-creators of Home Improvement.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Damn. Yes, man. That's right.
- 14:12Speaker 2: That Carmen and that Matt Williams were the.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Writers for our show. Wow.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And mind you, writers on the pilot for which everyone
- 14:22Speaker 2: said sucked and wasn't fun yeah only two of the
- 14:25Speaker 2: most successful comedy writers of all time.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Yeah went out read the reshot pieces.
- 14:32Speaker 2: That is great and now matt matt is i want
- 14:35Speaker 2: to say matt was also on roseanne and i think
- 14:38Speaker 2: matt is also the creator and executive producer on the.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Connors damn And so, you know. You're raking them in.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I'm just saying, that's who the three guys were.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Three dudes that rode on our pilot. Three dudes. Three dudes.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Just like they were some miscellaneous cats.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 1: They brought in big guns. And for some reason, it
- 15:00Speaker 1: still wasn't quite what they wanted when they saw the cut.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So this is something we're going to get into. So
- 15:11Speaker 2: when you watch this, the pilot, what was your takeaway?
- 15:16Speaker 1: I was really excited to see a mention of a
- 15:20Speaker 1: classroom and some books. And probably my favorite scene was
- 15:28Speaker 1: the scene with Denise and the professor. See you next week.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Dr.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Harris? Yes?
- 15:42Speaker 3: You called your wife. She told me you were teaching tonight.
- 15:44Speaker 3: You probably don't even remember me. I met you at
- 15:46Speaker 3: freshman orientation.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Denise Huxtable.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Yes, sir. You live in Gilbert Hall, and you currently
- 15:51Speaker 4: have a 1.7 grade average.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I'm working on it, sir.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I hope so.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Your major's undecided, and you're always late with your assignments.
- 15:59Speaker 4: How did you know all that? Well, as dean of
- 16:01Speaker 4: student affairs, I'm a lot like Santa Claus. I know
- 16:04Speaker 4: who's been naughty and who's been nice. Now, what's the problem?
- 16:09Speaker 2: Problem?
- 16:09Speaker 3: Problem?
- 16:10Speaker 4: Anytime a student is slinking around my room at the
- 16:12Speaker 4: end of my class, I know there's a problem.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Right, there is.
- 16:15Speaker 3: See, I wrote checks for the dorm fees for me
- 16:18Speaker 3: and my roommate, and they bounced.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Denise, as I.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Recall, this isn't the first time your check has bounced
- 16:24Speaker 4: since you've been at Hillman.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I've had one or two others.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Try four or five.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Has it been that many?
- 16:31Speaker 1: Bounce city.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Yeah, see, but I've always had the money to make
- 16:37Speaker 3: those checks good, except this time I can't. And I
- 16:40Speaker 3: was hoping you could help me get a student loan.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Denise, those loans are for students who have a need.
- 16:45Speaker 3: I have a need.
- 16:46Speaker 4: You also have a mother who's a lawyer and a
- 16:48Speaker 4: father who's a doctor.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Why don't you ask them?
- 16:51Speaker 3: Because if I asked them, they'd think I was messing up.
- 16:53Speaker 1: You are messing up.
- 16:56Speaker 4: You've messed up quite often since you've been at Hillman.
- 17:01Speaker 4: This is a personal problem, not a school problem. There's
- 17:04Speaker 4: nothing I can do.
- 17:04Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I suggest you call your parents.
- 17:08Speaker 6: I can't.
- 17:10Speaker 1: You can't?
- 17:11Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I can, but I don't want to. I
- 17:14Speaker 3: don't want them coming to my rescue anymore. They've done
- 17:16Speaker 3: that my whole life. They must think they're going to
- 17:19Speaker 3: have to take care of me forever. And I don't
- 17:22Speaker 3: want them to think that. This is my problem. I
- 17:26Speaker 3: want to take care of it. I want to do
- 17:28Speaker 3: this myself.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Maybe there's something we can do. How do you feel
- 17:37Speaker 4: about a part-time job?
- 17:39Speaker 3: I would do anything. Anything, anything.
- 17:41Speaker 4: I know of a job opening, and I'm pretty sure
- 17:44Speaker 4: with my charm and wit that I can convince them
- 17:47Speaker 4: to give you a $ 200 advance.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Oh!
- 17:49Speaker 6: That would be great, sir.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Let's go over to the student center and bother some people.
- 18:02Speaker 3: So, where do you think I'll be working?
- 18:04Speaker 1: Well, let's put it this way. It won't be at
- 18:06Speaker 1: the bank. that scene between the two of them was
- 18:15Speaker 1: fantastic because that's a throw forward to what Dwayne would do,
- 18:22Speaker 1: to what Colonel Taylor did for Dwayne. Like all the
- 18:26Speaker 1: other students leave and then there's that one student and
- 18:30Speaker 1: that one-on-one time you get with an elder that can
- 18:35Speaker 1: change your attitude or your perspective or whatever. And to
- 18:40Speaker 1: the point that, you know, she jumped in his arms
- 18:44Speaker 1: and then jumped.
- 18:47Speaker 2: What's so great, and this may be a clip we're
- 18:51Speaker 2: going to pull up.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:52Speaker 2: When he helps her and she jumps into his arms,
- 18:56Speaker 2: it looks like she headbutt him right in his face.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It does.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And it looks like it hurt. And he still managed
- 19:03Speaker 2: to hold it together. But it looked like she really
- 19:06Speaker 2: clocked him. She was supposed to hug him and she
- 19:09Speaker 2: really went for it and he was not ready.
- 19:11Speaker 1: And she was notorious. If she hits you in a scene,
- 19:14Speaker 1: she hits you. Like, I've seen old girl Elaine on Friends,
- 19:21Speaker 1: who I love. I can't think of her name either.
- 19:24Speaker 1: But she would hit people and you would see them.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Yes, JLD. But before... It was Lillicoe.
- 19:33Speaker 1: It was Lisa, who if she hit you in a scene, ah,
- 19:37Speaker 1: she hit you in a scene. She gave it to
- 19:39Speaker 1: you for real. It wasn't like play hitting. It wasn't show. No, no.
- 19:42Speaker 1: It wasn't acting. Yeah, she was very physical. One of
- 19:45Speaker 1: the things I love. So, yeah, I can imagine she
- 19:50Speaker 1: went for it live and just clocked him.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Now we should also take a moment to say part
- 19:56Speaker 2: of what I'm enjoying about all of this is going
- 19:59Speaker 2: back to seeing everybody. So that was Ted Ross.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Ted Ross.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Ted Ross who played the lion in The Wiz.
- 20:07Speaker 1: The mean old lion.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Just phenomenal that he came to do this little role.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and we never, he never came back. Never got
- 20:17Speaker 1: another scene? I saw that scene. To my knowledge. We're
- 20:21Speaker 1: going to find out, but I don't think he ever
- 20:22Speaker 1: got to come back. I don't remember having any scenes
- 20:24Speaker 1: with him. And I thought when I saw that, I
- 20:26Speaker 1: was like, oh, that's what I want to do. I
- 20:28Speaker 1: want to do that kind of stuff, like have those moments.
- 20:33Speaker 1: And I never got to a classroom with him.
- 20:36Speaker 2: And here's what else I'm going to tell you. For
- 20:39Speaker 2: everything that is maligned about season one, that scene in
- 20:45Speaker 2: that classroom, particularly if it's supposed to be an HBCU,
- 20:50Speaker 2: what do we know about him? He was the Dean
- 20:53Speaker 2: of Student Affairs. And she said, I don't know if
- 20:57Speaker 2: you know me. You're Denise Huxley.
- 20:59Speaker 1: You live in Gilbert Hall. Like, he ran down everything.
- 21:02Speaker 1: He knew our whole deal.
- 21:04Speaker 2: He said, you got a GPA of 1.7. You're failing
- 21:08Speaker 2: all your classes. You're late for all your assignments. I'm like,
- 21:11Speaker 2: I know everything about you. And he said, well, how
- 21:16Speaker 2: do you know this? I'm the dean of student affairs.
- 21:19Speaker 2: It's like, it's my job to know. And he also
- 21:21Speaker 2: had a great line. It was very funny that I
- 21:23Speaker 2: can't remember now. But he had a great line. where
- 21:26Speaker 2: he broke that down. And that's what HBCU students will
- 21:30Speaker 2: tell you. Their professors have a greater interest in their
- 21:34Speaker 2: students and no more.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:37Speaker 2: And, and so it was also interesting that when she
- 21:44Speaker 2: gave him the problem, And found out, he was like,
- 21:48Speaker 2: you've bounced multiple checks.
- 21:49Speaker 1: He's like, you're the king of bouncing or something like that.
- 21:52Speaker 1: She said like two or three.
- 21:53Speaker 2: He was like four or five. Yeah, he was like,
- 21:55Speaker 2: you're just notorious.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Yeah, don't try it with me, kid.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I know everything. Bursar tells me all the things.
- 22:00Speaker 2: We got this Huxtable kid bouncing checks.
- 22:02Speaker 1: 11 right.
- 22:04Speaker 2: And he said, well, you know, what you're talking to
- 22:06Speaker 2: me about, isn't a school problem. It's a you problem.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Figure it out.
- 22:10Speaker 2: You better, you know, she's like, I need help. He said,
- 22:13Speaker 2: I also know you got a mother who's a lawyer
- 22:16Speaker 2: and a father who's a doctor. You better call him.
- 22:19Speaker 1: And funny that.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Her response, and it went to a close-up on her.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Pushing. Yes. Yeah, man. Yes, when she said, get him, girl.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I always do this. And I don't want to call
- 22:32Speaker 2: my parents. I want to solve this for myself.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Yeah. And that won him over. Yeah.
- 22:37Speaker 2: And he was like, okay, I can help.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I think I might be able to help you.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Now, the other part, this was also because this was
- 22:43Speaker 2: the pilot, and to launch it, There's a cameo of
- 22:49Speaker 2: Keisha Knight, William, and Bill Cosby. Yep.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Both. Yep.
- 22:52Speaker 2: And what I also liked about, you know, because it
- 22:56Speaker 2: was classic Cosby-style humor.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Like, are you in jail? Do you need money or
- 23:02Speaker 1: something like that? What's wrong?
- 23:04Speaker 2: And they had something that most folks don't know anything about.
- 23:08Speaker 2: A collect phone call.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Right. A collect call.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Would you accept it? Back in the day, you had to.
- 23:13Speaker 1: These kids don't know what a collect call is.
- 23:15Speaker 3: No.
- 23:16Speaker 2: And, it's a damn shame, did you ever make collect
- 23:21Speaker 2: phone calls?
- 23:22Speaker 1: No. Oh, bro.
- 23:24Speaker 2: There was a whole science to the collect call.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Yeah, right, a protocol.
- 23:27Speaker 2: There was a whole, so we had codes. So if
- 23:31Speaker 2: I called and used my first name and said it's
- 23:34Speaker 2: a collect call, that meant I'm ready to go. If
- 23:37Speaker 2: I called and used my middle name, that meant I
- 23:40Speaker 2: need more time. Yeah. So if it was a collect
- 23:45Speaker 2: call from Michael, they knew not to accept it. But
- 23:47Speaker 2: they didn't have to accept the first one. They knew
- 23:49Speaker 2: to come get me. If Michael called collect, he's like,
- 23:52Speaker 2: I'm not ready for my pickup yet. Like, we would
- 23:54Speaker 2: do all those sort of things. Or if you didn't
- 23:58Speaker 2: have money... It's a collect call from, and then they
- 24:02Speaker 2: just knew to hang up and call back. So they
- 24:04Speaker 2: didn't have to pay the extra charge for the collect call.
- 24:07Speaker 2: It's a damn shame. These are the things we used
- 24:08Speaker 2: to do to AT & T before.
- 24:10Speaker 1: They broke up the monopoly. Hey, you know what? Screw
- 24:12Speaker 1: the conglomerates. Screw the conglomerates. And the extra charge on
- 24:17Speaker 1: the collect call. Come on, man. That's just being greedy.
- 24:21Speaker 2: But it was so funny because one, again, for every
- 24:27Speaker 2: way in that first scene, His role, his stern stance
- 24:33Speaker 2: with her, his knowledge of his students, her wanting to
- 24:36Speaker 2: declare on her own.
- 24:38Speaker 1: And then when it cut back.
- 24:39Speaker 2: To the Huxtable.
- 24:41Speaker 1: My second favorite scene.
- 24:42Speaker 2: She said she called for money, but then when he
- 24:45Speaker 2: was like, what do you need? They were playing like
- 24:47Speaker 2: Denise Who and all of that. When she had the call,
- 24:51Speaker 2: she hangs up and doesn't ask. How many times have
- 24:55Speaker 2: folks called like, I'm calling for something.
- 24:57Speaker 1: And then why are you talking? You can't get up
- 24:59Speaker 1: the nerve to do it. Yeah, chicken out. It's like,
- 25:02Speaker 1: it's really good.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And as soon as they hung up, it was like,
- 25:05Speaker 2: she needed money. Like, yeah, but she couldn't bring herself
- 25:08Speaker 2: to ask for it.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Right?
- 25:10Speaker 2: When they go back to it.
- 25:12Speaker 1: That's my other favorite.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Huxtable residence.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yes, yes, operator. I will accept the charges. Hi, Dad.
- 25:47Speaker 1: What's up?
- 25:48Speaker 3: Well, something was up earlier, and I thought I was
- 25:50Speaker 3: going to need your help. I mean, I did need
- 25:52Speaker 3: your help, but now I don't. I handled the entire
- 25:55Speaker 3: thing myself.
- 25:56Speaker 6: Was it legal?
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yes, and I'm so proud of me. Oh, would I
- 26:01Speaker 1: be proud of you?
- 26:03Speaker 3: Yeah, you'd be proud of me, too.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Okay, good.
- 26:06Speaker 3: I gotta go, but kiss Mom for me, okay?
- 26:08Speaker 4: I will, honey.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I love you. I love you too.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Bye.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Bye-bye. She still wants money? No, she found a.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Way to get it. Good for her.
- 26:24Speaker 2: When they go back to it, what was your... Okay,
- 26:26Speaker 2: so if it's your favorite, tell me what your favorite was.
- 26:31Speaker 1: My absolute favorite moment, I loved them on the phone together,
- 26:35Speaker 1: but when she got off the phone and then he
- 26:38Speaker 1: had the Dialogue with Keisha. And she said she needed money,
- 26:44Speaker 1: but she worked it out. And Keisha said, good for her.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, snap. That just got me.
- 26:51Speaker 1: That just got me. I felt that all the way in.
- 26:55Speaker 2: What I enjoyed most, I'm going to say Rudy was
- 27:02Speaker 2: at that time five or six.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 2: He's playing chess with her.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yeah, word. They bopping. They playing chess?
- 27:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 1: He played chess with his five or six-year-old.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Yes, man.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And he's watching her.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Because she'd probably be giving him that word. Because when
- 27:17Speaker 1: he went to get the phone, he kept his eye
- 27:20Speaker 1: on her like, yeah, you little, what the hell is
- 27:22Speaker 1: happening here? Why are we still even working on this?
- 27:25Speaker 1: That part.
- 27:25Speaker 2: 100%. So it was demonstrative for what everyone thought appreciate
- 27:35Speaker 2: it even if they didn't know it. It was the
- 27:38Speaker 2: message you were getting that wasn't even the focus of
- 27:40Speaker 2: what we're talking about. That's exactly right.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Subliminals.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Just like all the artwork in the background, just like
- 27:46Speaker 2: all the music and so forth. Oh, let's talk about that.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I don't know, and I can't wait to see the
- 27:53Speaker 2: further we get down the road. But I loved how
- 27:57Speaker 2: every transition was to the theme song.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Yes.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Yes. Yeah.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yes. A little guitar.
- 28:05Speaker 6: Yes.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I noticed that. I don't think I remember that.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I don't remember that either. I don't remember that. But
- 28:10Speaker 1: I dig it so much. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That he
- 28:13Speaker 1: used to be. Yeah, like, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Just like Seinfeld would do. They stole, you see how
- 28:19Speaker 1: they just steal? Steal everything. They steal everything. It came
- 28:23Speaker 1: from where we started.
- 28:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:25Speaker 1: It was so good. Harmonica cue. Yes. Yeah, right. It
- 28:30Speaker 1: was really good. Yes, I noticed that in watching, like, huh.
- 28:35Speaker 2: And so for everything that it didn't get right.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Oh, boy.
- 28:41Speaker 2: But see what I'm saying, but if we had to
- 28:42Speaker 2: talk about what didn't get right in the pilot, in
- 28:47Speaker 2: this episode, it's going to take me more time to
- 28:51Speaker 2: think about that. I will tell you one of the
- 28:53Speaker 2: other things I found interesting was that, so we had
- 28:55Speaker 2: Loretta Devine and Stevie with the child.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:59Speaker 2: So we were pointing out that there was the dorm
- 29:03Speaker 2: mother and she was a single mother. Mm-hmm. But we
- 29:07Speaker 2: never talked about it. It never got any kind of storyline.
- 29:11Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, Whitley would take snipes at her. All
- 29:14Speaker 1: the time. You know what I mean? About it.
- 29:16Speaker 2: It's the one thing that Jasmine said when she talks about...
- 29:19Speaker 2: She couldn't say some of the things Whitley says.
- 29:22Speaker 1: She told the young man, you don't know your M's
- 29:24Speaker 1: from your W's. She was like, you little idiot. I'm like,
- 29:27Speaker 1: he's a kid. He's a child. He's like, where's my chocolate?
- 29:31Speaker 1: Hush up. Oh, my gosh.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:34Speaker 1: You don't know your M's from your W's. I was like, no. No.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Same thing upside down. How the fuck is a five-year-old
- 29:43Speaker 1: going to know? I'm a child. I don't know who
- 29:46Speaker 1: you are. Yeah, right. It was, again. One of the
- 29:50Speaker 1: things that they got fantastically wrong in the pilot was
- 29:59Speaker 1: Or it just was a, it was a, it was a,
- 30:02Speaker 1: how can we fix this? And they came up with
- 30:05Speaker 1: the best way they could, you know, the best idea.
- 30:08Speaker 1: They got their heads together. They came up and came
- 30:11Speaker 1: up with, okay, we can't duplicate this. So we'll fix
- 30:16Speaker 1: it with this. And it's in, in my only scene,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I think in a pilot, I come in and bump
- 30:24Speaker 1: into Denise and she has on this, big hat with
- 30:28Speaker 1: a big brim and the front brim is pushed up
- 30:31Speaker 1: and there's a brooch stuck in it so it kind
- 30:33Speaker 1: of gives a little flip in the front and i
- 30:36Speaker 1: remember as we were shooting that scene because it was
- 30:38Speaker 1: just a pickup it wasn't part of the original pilot
- 30:41Speaker 1: it was just to get me and jasmine in the episode.
- 30:44Speaker 6: Um hi denise heard about your new roommate I understand
- 30:49Speaker 6: she's a very unusual girl, kind of a human tumbleweed
- 30:53Speaker 6: that's been blown hither and yon before settling in your room.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Maddie Lawton just happens to be a brilliant journalism student
- 31:00Speaker 3: who has traveled many times around the world with the Army.
- 31:03Speaker 6: Well, I'm sure you'll be as snug as three bugs
- 31:06Speaker 6: in a very small rug.
- 31:26Speaker 1: They were yelling at her when she ran up the
- 31:32Speaker 1: stairs to take off your hat. And she would run
- 31:35Speaker 1: up the stairs and take off her hat. And they
- 31:36Speaker 1: were like, do it again. Take off your hat as
- 31:38Speaker 1: you're going up the stairs. So you watch her. And she,
- 31:43Speaker 1: when she did it, she snatched that hat off because
- 31:46Speaker 1: she was kind of tired of the run upstairs. And
- 31:48Speaker 1: they wouldn't tell you why. Why? We're doing this. Just
- 31:51Speaker 1: do it. Don't ask why. Actors don't like that shit.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Actors don't like that shit. As a general rule, people
- 32:00Speaker 1: don't like that shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But actors in particular,
- 32:02Speaker 1: when acting, if they say why. Give me a reason.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Give them something. Yeah. A little something. So they had
- 32:09Speaker 1: her go up there and do it a couple of times.
- 32:10Speaker 1: And she snatched the hat off. And it's because they
- 32:13Speaker 1: were going to cut that scene into the pilot, the
- 32:16Speaker 1: original pilot, directed by Jason. But they didn't have the
- 32:22Speaker 1: headband that she was wearing in it. And they didn't
- 32:25Speaker 1: have time to do her hair. Our hair was different.
- 32:28Speaker 1: So they put this big hat on her, had her
- 32:30Speaker 1: run up the stairs, and then snatched the hat off
- 32:33Speaker 1: as she was still in camera shot. So that when
- 32:36Speaker 1: she came around the corner and went into her dorm...
- 32:39Speaker 1: With all the hair off.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Now she has. It matches. Yeah. Only it don't match.
- 32:46Speaker 1: So when you watch the scene, if we can watch it,
- 32:50Speaker 1: I guess we just talked about it.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 32:51Speaker 1: And you know what to look at. So we can
- 32:53Speaker 1: put it on. So we got, we'll pull the clip.
- 32:56Speaker 1: We'll run that clip. I was just, and I didn't
- 32:58Speaker 1: even notice that then. I remember them yelling at her
- 33:02Speaker 1: to take your hat off before you get to the
- 33:04Speaker 1: top of the stand. As you're going, I'm in the,
- 33:07Speaker 1: and she was like, what? I was like, what is
- 33:10Speaker 1: going on? Because I have no knowledge that they're cutting
- 33:12Speaker 1: this and doing this and doing what they're doing with it.
- 33:14Speaker 2: What's going on with it.
- 33:15Speaker 1: And what they're trying to do. But when I saw it,
- 33:18Speaker 1: it jumped out at me like, oh shit she got
- 33:21Speaker 1: a whole different hairstyle yes what's up from downstairs she
- 33:25Speaker 1: turned the corner threw a hat away pushed her hair
- 33:29Speaker 1: back put a headband on and then went into the
- 33:32Speaker 1: room like she was still right what do i have
- 33:34Speaker 1: what was she mad at.
- 33:35Speaker 2: That it's a long stairway yeah yeah yeah it's a
- 33:38Speaker 2: long stairway i saw that and really wanted to point
- 33:40Speaker 2: it out for the the folks at home to see
- 33:42Speaker 2: because uh You don't see things like that.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you never see. You don't always pick those things
- 33:49Speaker 1: out or get a chance to understand why. Why did
- 33:52Speaker 1: that change? How did these things happen? And I just
- 33:55Speaker 1: told you how. One of the other things that I really.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Liked, I'm going to see how long it lasts, but
- 34:05Speaker 2: I thought it was funny because Jaleesa calls everybody by
- 34:09Speaker 2: their last name.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Right. Huxtable. And then she called Marissa Minnesota at one point.
- 34:13Speaker 1: And she called her, but she called her Lawden too.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Lawden and Huxtable.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Yeah. And that's an interesting character choice because.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I don't know a lot of women that do that. No,
- 34:25Speaker 1: that sounds like some drill sergeant shit.
- 34:28Speaker 2: And funny because Maggie's the army brat.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:32Speaker 2: But they gave it to Jaleesa instead, which was interesting.
- 34:36Speaker 2: And the other thing, It was very cool that, similar to,
- 34:43Speaker 2: so when Seth Rogen and them won the Emmy for
- 34:47Speaker 2: the studio, he's like, this is so surreal because in
- 34:51Speaker 2: the studio, I.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Had the writers winning an Emmy.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:54Speaker 1: And then we won the Emmy for the studio. Right.
- 34:56Speaker 2: He said, the only way I thought I'd get an
- 34:57Speaker 2: Emmy is if I wrote it into the script and then.
- 35:00Speaker 1: We won it. Right.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Everyone talks about, and I can't tell you how many
- 35:04Speaker 2: people say, I was dating my girlfriend in college. But
- 35:10Speaker 2: every Thursday, I couldn't talk to her because they were
- 35:13Speaker 2: all gathered around the TV watching A Different World. And
- 35:16Speaker 2: in this show, there was everyone gathered around the TV
- 35:20Speaker 2: in the women's dormitory telling everybody to shut.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Up because their program was on. And I was like,
- 35:26Speaker 1: that's what they're doing for this show every Thursday.
- 35:30Speaker 2: And there it was, right there.
- 35:32Speaker 1: In the middle of the city. It was very cool.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Now, I got to say that The flip side, I.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Don't know anybody.
- 35:45Speaker 2: I don't know whatever the dorm fees are. That part
- 35:50Speaker 2: kind of... Oh, her paying for Jaleesa's dorm fees?
- 35:53Speaker 1: Dorm fees. Because the week before she had to pay
- 35:55Speaker 1: for something of hers.
- 35:56Speaker 2: For activity fees or something like.
- 35:59Speaker 1: So, look, I'm just.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Telling you, at least college, there was an activity fee
- 36:05Speaker 2: that was part of your tuition that went in there.
- 36:09Speaker 2: You had to pay for your housing, you know, because
- 36:12Speaker 2: otherwise you wouldn't have a place to live.
- 36:13Speaker 1: You'd be unhoused. Correct.
- 36:15Speaker 2: But that will come into play. Yeah, there's an Easter
- 36:19Speaker 2: egg for later.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Shout out to Jordan.
- 36:22Speaker 2: But I just thought, nobody's going to get kicked out
- 36:25Speaker 2: of the dorm because whatever the $ 200 fee was, that
- 36:29Speaker 2: wasn't what it cost you to get room and board.
- 36:31Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 36:32Speaker 2: So in other words, you paid the $ 5, 000 for a
- 36:34Speaker 2: semester to live in the dorm room, but because of
- 36:37Speaker 2: the dorm fees, you're going to get kicked out? Right.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I was like, okay.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 36:40Speaker 2: We're going to go with this. Let's move along. And
- 36:43Speaker 2: of all things that Jaleesa figured, Denise had money problems.
- 36:49Speaker 2: So she paid for Denise because it is that money problem.
- 36:52Speaker 1: So I'm going to.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Trust you to pay my bill?
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yeah, my shit next time when it come up. Knowing
- 36:57Speaker 1: you can't balance the checkbook.
- 36:59Speaker 2: I've already said you're immature, you're undisciplined, but I'm going
- 37:03Speaker 2: to just trust you to pay my fee.
- 37:04Speaker 1: And I think Maggie said, don't you balance your check?
- 37:07Speaker 1: Don't you done enough? She was like, I do, but
- 37:08Speaker 1: it gets hard.
- 37:09Speaker 2: She said, because I have so many responsibilities, I don't
- 37:13Speaker 2: have time to.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Be responsible when I'm doing all my work.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Yeah. And Maggie had a great line because when they
- 37:18Speaker 2: were walking up the stairs, she said, in the one
- 37:21Speaker 2: day that I've known you, this is the only mistake
- 37:23Speaker 2: you've made.
- 37:24Speaker 1: That's right. In the one day that I've known you. Oh,
- 37:26Speaker 1: in the one day.
- 37:27Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Yeah. This is the pilot. Yeah.
- 37:32Speaker 2: This is the pilot that had a lot of, you know,
- 37:34Speaker 2: this is.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Of cuts, edits, and so forth. Yeah, reshoots, everything. But
- 37:38Speaker 1: it had some good stuff in it. Absolutely.
- 37:40Speaker 2: And that's why I'm saying, you know, again, I'm trying
- 37:43Speaker 2: to look at this through the lens of it wasn't,
- 37:46Speaker 2: we didn't go where we knew. This, particularly the scene
- 37:52Speaker 2: with Ted Ross, should have been our North Star.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 37:57Speaker 2: But it was there, but we got pulled a different direction.
- 38:00Speaker 2: And we'll probably see more of that as we go
- 38:02Speaker 2: through the first season. Also in, in that episode was
- 38:07Speaker 2: the Phyllis Stickney, who was, who was.
- 38:11Speaker 1: There in, in the beginning.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Uh, I'm, I'm, I would love to get Phyllis on
- 38:15Speaker 2: so we could talk to her about her experience.
- 38:18Speaker 1: And, um, Paris Vaughn was in there, too. Paris came
- 38:22Speaker 1: running in. She was the last one to come in,
- 38:24Speaker 1: I think, that sat down and was like, what did
- 38:26Speaker 1: I miss?
- 38:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:27Speaker 1: And they told her, shh.
- 38:28Speaker 2: And so, you know, I'm just going back to look
- 38:30Speaker 2: at all, you know, for all the guest stars that
- 38:33Speaker 2: we keep talking about that had come through.
- 38:35Speaker 1: A lot. What?
- 38:37Speaker 6: A lot.
- 38:37Speaker 1: No, I'm just thinking a lot.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, of all that came through. The other thing
- 38:42Speaker 2: I just found interesting, they wrote the character of Dwayne Wade.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Dwayne wanted to hit on all the girls, and all
- 38:51Speaker 2: the girls were buffed him for the most part.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 38:54Speaker 2: But there were scenes when Dwayne would walk in, Steve
- 38:57Speaker 2: would say, Dwayne, hello, door, and then walk out.
- 39:00Speaker 1: They wrote a character to walk in. And walk out.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Just to walk out.
- 39:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Say something slick to Denise, get a smile maybe. And
- 39:07Speaker 1: walk out. Then boom, get out. Get out.
- 39:09Speaker 2: I was like, ah.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Denise, why is it that we seem to keep bumping
- 39:15Speaker 1: into each other?
- 39:16Speaker 3: Because I'm always late and you're always in the way.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I thought. Destiny. Dwight? Denise, looking for me?
- 39:26Speaker 6: Stevie, nice haircut.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Denise, nice haircut. front. You're still late with your dorm fees.
- 39:34Speaker 1: This man is a serious regular.
- 39:36Speaker 2: He's getting paid to walk on the set and walk
- 39:40Speaker 2: right back out.
- 39:40Speaker 1: And this was the inserts that they were just trying
- 39:44Speaker 1: to establish me having been there since in the first episode.
- 39:49Speaker 1: not the pilot, but the first episode, I opened the show.
- 39:53Speaker 1: So here they wanted to make sure that you were
- 39:55Speaker 1: still established. Where did that dude that opened the show go?
- 39:59Speaker 1: In the second episode, was he gone? Did they throw
- 40:02Speaker 1: him out all the way out?
- 40:04Speaker 2: But you know what's interesting, if you go back, that
- 40:07Speaker 2: could have been cool because that would have been just
- 40:09Speaker 2: like The Godfather. In The Godfather, the opening shot is
- 40:13Speaker 2: on The Undertaker. When they pull back, In the original Godfather,
- 40:18Speaker 2: the undertaker is the first face you see.
- 40:21Speaker 1: And you don't see him.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Again, but that's how they establish it. When I came
- 40:25Speaker 2: to this country, you know, he's telling all this stuff.
- 40:28Speaker 2: And then tells the Don what they did to his daughter.
- 40:32Speaker 2: So that to me is what it reminded me of,
- 40:35Speaker 2: that establishing shot from the Godfather.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I know. Me, it was too many teeth,
- 40:41Speaker 1: too much.
- 40:43Speaker 2: See, but I'm making the connection that the directors may
- 40:46Speaker 2: have made.
- 40:46Speaker 1: I understand. I see that. Yeah, I was just scared shitless. Well,
- 40:51Speaker 1: there's all of that. And the other part was I laughed. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 1: I laughed. I laughed. The second one was easier than
- 41:08Speaker 1: the first one for me.
- 41:09Speaker 2: The laughing?
- 41:10Speaker 1: Yeah. The first one I kind of watched, Maggie was
- 41:14Speaker 1: a good addition. You know what I mean? Terrific. When
- 41:18Speaker 1: she came in, she lit it up.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Yep.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Everything seemed to be, of course, the scene with Ted
- 41:24Speaker 1: is my- Go. Yeah. Go.
- 41:26Speaker 2: He was great.
- 41:27Speaker 1: And then, of course, having Bill and Keisha to kind
- 41:30Speaker 1: of book in, you know, start out with that little
- 41:33Speaker 1: phone call and then end with that phone call, I thought, oh, shit,
- 41:36Speaker 1: we got something. Uh, uh, you, you said, uh, you.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Said something that reminded me now I've got to think
- 41:42Speaker 2: of it was, uh, uh, having, having Ted come in. Um,
- 41:50Speaker 2: you know, I suppose in the same tradition that the
- 41:53Speaker 2: Cosby show had all of these famous guest stars come
- 41:57Speaker 2: in and play some of these roles, you know, that were, um,
- 42:02Speaker 2: you know, caricature and you turn around and it's, it's, um,
- 42:07Speaker 2: Why can't I say Tony's last name right now?
- 42:11Speaker 1: Tony Quinn. You know what I mean?
- 42:12Speaker 2: And he comes and he's playing some, you know, I
- 42:16Speaker 2: can't remember what he played, but he's like the plumber.
- 42:18Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Something like that. So, yeah, having.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Ted in the original, just it was a sign of
- 42:28Speaker 2: things to come for all of the other guest stars.
- 42:31Speaker 1: That we would have. I love those scenes when it's
- 42:35Speaker 1: two people in a scene. They seem to get that
- 42:39Speaker 1: more right than wrong.
- 42:40Speaker 2: The other part, though, that I found interesting, which was
- 42:44Speaker 2: a really interesting pull, was when she got a job,
- 42:48Speaker 2: They said she was working in the cafeteria.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Yeah. It was not the pit. No. There was no pit.
- 42:55Speaker 1: It's so funny. Jaleesa was working there, too. That's the
- 42:58Speaker 1: whole point.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Both of them had the uniform for the cafeteria.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Yep. Busting tables. And it should have been the pit.
- 43:05Speaker 2: And, you know, the other thing was I thought that
- 43:09Speaker 2: was part of the challenge they had with Jaleesa's character
- 43:13Speaker 2: that we're going to see later. She's 26 and older.
- 43:19Speaker 2: But so was Stevie. So they're very similar. And so
- 43:24Speaker 2: playing the dorm mother kind of role-ish seemed like it
- 43:29Speaker 2: was a little nebulous there. So it hadn't been worked
- 43:32Speaker 2: out yet. So that was something they had to come to.
- 43:36Speaker 2: And also that Maggie, I'm not sure where in the
- 43:43Speaker 2: seasons from the Cosby show, but Maggie was our first
- 43:46Speaker 2: fast talker.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:48Speaker 2: So before Charmaine, but there was also the other character that.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Liz Narvaez played. Yeah, that came.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Who was Vanessa's friend.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yes. She was the other little fast talker. That's correct.
- 44:03Speaker 2: But Maggie was a fast talker for us.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Right? Yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 2: And we also had not only other white actors in
- 44:11Speaker 2: the background, we had Asian actors.
- 44:14Speaker 1: It was the United Colors of Benetown up in there.
- 44:16Speaker 1: The white dude was dancing to Freed Nelson Mandela in
- 44:19Speaker 1: the joint. He was grooving. I was like, what is this?
- 44:23Speaker 1: What is wrong with this picture?
- 44:25Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 44:25Speaker 1: The white guy was dancing to Free Nelson Mandela. Free
- 44:29Speaker 1: Nelson Mandela. And the white dude was starting the white
- 44:32Speaker 1: dude doing his shit. And I was like... Huh. Straight
- 44:36Speaker 1: from Soweto. They couldn't find no... He's up for Johannesburg. Yeah, right.
- 44:41Speaker 1: They couldn't find one of us to put in there
- 44:43Speaker 1: for that part to dance. Oh, my gosh. He's stealing, boy.
- 44:49Speaker 1: That is hilarious. Yeah.
- 44:54Speaker 4: Oh, jeez.
- 44:55Speaker 1: That's how the show came. The credits was rolling. I
- 44:58Speaker 1: was like, look at this. And I remember that dude
- 45:01Speaker 1: as an extra. He was there all the time.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:04Speaker 1: White dude. You know, just like he was a California dude.
- 45:07Speaker 1: He was special business. Yeah. That's right. He was always there.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Every week. Until Debbie came. And then he said, we're
- 45:15Speaker 1: freeing Mandela and you. Right. You can go. Y'all are
- 45:19Speaker 1: both free. Y'all are both out of jail. Y'all are
- 45:22Speaker 1: both free. Y'all are both free to go. You are gone.
- 45:24Speaker 2: I'll see you later.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Wow. Hasta la vista. Oh, God. Yeah.
- 45:28Speaker 2: All I can say is there are folks who will again,
- 45:36Speaker 2: bemoan season one. And season one was not where we
- 45:40Speaker 2: ended up going, but I think we got all these
- 45:44Speaker 2: episodes that there was enough there that you found entertaining because.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Again, Lisa Bonet is one of the most popular.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Recognizable on the planet at this time, right?
- 46:01Speaker 1: For the last 40 years. Yeah.
- 46:03Speaker 2: And you got, you know, the help of the number
- 46:08Speaker 2: one television show.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Wait, as we're saying this, one of the most recognizable,
- 46:15Speaker 1: popular places on the planet, and I sent you a
- 46:18Speaker 1: picture of her, a video of her, outside talking, and
- 46:23Speaker 1: you said, who's this? No! I.
- 46:28Speaker 2: So, so wait, not who, I didn't say who's this
- 46:34Speaker 2: as in, I don't recognize her. What did I say?
- 46:37Speaker 1: Go ahead. Let's look this up. Cause yeah.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Let's look it up. Go ahead to the, go ahead
- 46:42Speaker 2: to the text. We're going to do this for the people.
- 46:44Speaker 2: We're going to take a minute for the people and
- 46:46Speaker 2: let you look it up. And then we're going to
- 46:48Speaker 2: see what this turns.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Out to be. I'm going to, I'm going to let
- 46:51Speaker 1: you write. I will not.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Accuse you of false things a hundred times as soon
- 46:58Speaker 2: as you finish this. So we're going to, I figured
- 47:02Speaker 2: like we need to have that music.
- 47:05Speaker 1: You did not say who's this. What did I say?
- 47:08Speaker 1: You said what? With a no, wait a minute. Yes.
- 47:13Speaker 2: That's what I said. I was, I was stunned that
- 47:18Speaker 2: not only had, Was she out in the world, but
- 47:21Speaker 2: that she actually talked? Not that she's out in the world.
- 47:24Speaker 2: She goes out all the time. But to be on camera,
- 47:28Speaker 2: and she actually talked to the press, because it's something
- 47:30Speaker 2: that she does not like to generally do.
- 47:32Speaker 1: He's right.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Woo!
- 47:34Speaker 1: He's right. Bam! This is why you don't play with me, ma'am!
- 47:38Speaker 1: He did not say who's that.
- 47:40Speaker 2: That's absolutely correct.
- 47:42Speaker 1: I did not. I did give him the answer before
- 47:46Speaker 1: he responded.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Because I know who she is.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I see them. Who do you think I am, a millennial?
- 47:53Speaker 1: What's wrong with you? And then I waited for him
- 47:57Speaker 1: to respond, and he didn't.
- 47:59Speaker 2: So from now on, I'm going to tell you what
- 48:01Speaker 2: you said, and then you'll know in advance. See, so
- 48:06Speaker 2: we have now wasted all of our good listeners who've
- 48:09Speaker 2: downloaded our podcast time.
- 48:11Speaker 1: I'm sorry, folks. I'm sorry. Normally, I mop the floor
- 48:14Speaker 1: with him on things like this. No, you don't. But
- 48:16Speaker 1: this time, he was right. You don't normally mop the floor.
- 48:18Speaker 1: And I can admit it. See how he's doing that
- 48:20Speaker 1: denial shit? Like, you don't normally.
- 48:22Speaker 2: What?
- 48:23Speaker 1: No, you never. I never lost. Never lost. One, let's
- 48:28Speaker 1: be clear.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I've lost a lot to you.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yep.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Because when we play basketball one-on-one, what is your record?
- 48:34Speaker 1: I got to be like 1,500 and 0.
- 48:37Speaker 2: That is correct. So I've lost you quite a bit.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Quite a bit.
- 48:40Speaker 2: That's 100%.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Like nothing but losses.
- 48:42Speaker 2: But my record is also 1,000% on did I say
- 48:46Speaker 2: who's this? So from now on, we won't ask Darryl
- 48:52Speaker 2: Bell if he doesn't know who in the hell Lisa.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Bonet is when he looks at her in the picture.
- 48:57Speaker 1: You moron. And he's trying to accuse me of it.
- 49:01Speaker 1: On film? On live TV.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
- 49:03Speaker 1: What's wrong with you? Yeah, I jumped out the window
- 49:06Speaker 1: on that one. Okay. I'm back, folks. I'm back.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Look, this has been spectacular for this. I cannot wait
- 49:15Speaker 2: to get in deeper.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Because.
- 49:20Speaker 2: we're actually going to have to be more deliberate about
- 49:26Speaker 2: to looking at what we liked, but then figuring out
- 49:30Speaker 2: why this first season, notwithstanding the fact that it was
- 49:33Speaker 2: so successful, because it was, but to have the conversation
- 49:38Speaker 2: about why is it so maligned, was it actually as
- 49:41Speaker 2: bad as some folks think? Or was it good, like
- 49:46Speaker 2: the scene was with Ted Ross, but it just got
- 49:49Speaker 2: exponentially better when it got specific to tell the truth
- 49:53Speaker 2: about the HBCU experience. And that's what differentiated it. Yeah,
- 49:59Speaker 2: I really thought it was going to be.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Really hard. I thought it was going to be watching
- 50:04Speaker 1: this old shit. I was like, why am I doing this?
- 50:07Speaker 1: And then you got a couple laughs. And then, yep.
- 50:10Speaker 1: And as much as I was thrilled that You got
- 50:14Speaker 1: to go to the ball last night and I had
- 50:16Speaker 1: to stay home and do homework. I almost was going
- 50:20Speaker 1: to go into five and six just because I had
- 50:23Speaker 1: a good time with at least the pilot. The pilot.
- 50:28Speaker 1: And then we get into some other stuff and I
- 50:30Speaker 1: was like... And then they start... Yeah, so... You know what?
- 50:34Speaker 2: I'm so glad that you're glad that you're actually going
- 50:36Speaker 2: to watch the episode since we're doing a rewatch podcast.
- 50:41Speaker 1: That you're not going to quit. Because you don't want
- 50:43Speaker 1: to watch it. I don't really.
- 50:45Speaker 2: I'm so glad that this is not a chore for you.
- 50:48Speaker 1: It's really good. I think 38, 39 years might be
- 50:54Speaker 1: the sweet spot for me.
- 50:55Speaker 2: To have enough space.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Yeah. In between. To be like, oh, let me watch this.
- 51:01Speaker 1: I still don't know what planet my hands are from.
- 51:04Speaker 2: I still don't know. This was something you liked.
- 51:07Speaker 1: To do all the time. Pointing at you and bringing
- 51:11Speaker 1: them to my... You can always see my hands and
- 51:14Speaker 1: my chin. I don't know what the fuck was happening, bro.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I can't... I'm so glad I didn't see it.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Just a nervous tick.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I came up last night with... It's a
- 51:27Speaker 1: coping mechanism because I was so... Like, Dwayne's sense of humor,
- 51:33Speaker 1: more Thad Mumford sense of humor.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Nope.
- 51:36Speaker 1: My sense of humor? Not. So committing to these jokes,
- 51:41Speaker 1: like saying something that you know is corny and then going, oh,
- 51:44Speaker 1: what the fuck? Wait a minute. You just got tickled
- 51:49Speaker 1: like the pills. Yeah, but that's what it had me
- 51:54Speaker 1: doing at points in this shit. I would say the
- 51:56Speaker 1: dumbest shit and then laugh at it. It means confidence.
- 52:04Speaker 1: What the fuck, bro? Oh, my God. So I think
- 52:10Speaker 1: in my undiagnosed anxiety... You're like, in New York, they're
- 52:17Speaker 1: going to kill me. They're going to fucking rob me
- 52:19Speaker 1: on the street. I'm never going to be able to
- 52:20Speaker 1: go anywhere. When I show up on the basketball court...
- 52:22Speaker 1: They're going to be like, you better get the fuck
- 52:24Speaker 1: out of here, boy. With that book. With that corner stuff.
- 52:27Speaker 1: I just thought... Yes. I realized last night as I
- 52:30Speaker 1: was watching, I was like, I think that is because...
- 52:33Speaker 1: I'm having such a hard time committing to these things.
- 52:38Speaker 1: And to say these things like I believe them, that
- 52:42Speaker 1: this became a defense, a mask for me. Yeah. So
- 52:47Speaker 1: that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. And it
- 52:48Speaker 1: ain't going nowhere until at least midway through season two. Okay.
- 52:54Speaker 2: We'll look for that.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Yeah. You won't be able to. avoid it because as
- 52:59Speaker 1: long as I'm there in season one, you're going to
- 53:02Speaker 1: see all 10 fingers telling you the story as I'm talking.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Folks are wondering if you're not trying to motion your unwell.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Somebody come get me right now. You're trying to signal somebody.
- 53:16Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm doing.
- 53:18Speaker 2: I'm going crazy.
- 53:19Speaker 1: I need some intervention. Yes, this is not what I'm
- 53:22Speaker 1: meant to do. I really shouldn't be doing this. So now,
- 53:28Speaker 1: that's it for today. Mm-hmm. Or for this week. Mm-hmm.
- 53:32Speaker 2: We're going to regroup, get ready for next week with
- 53:35Speaker 2: episode three.
- 53:37Speaker 1: Pop.
- 53:37Speaker 2: There we go.
- 53:38Speaker 1: And it is called Porky the Bergerac.
- 53:41Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Yes. Can we do our outro? Whenever you're ready. See
- 53:46Speaker 1: you motherfuckers soon.
- 53:47Speaker 2: I'm trying to get sponsors and this is what I'm
- 53:49Speaker 2: working with. Okay.
- 53:50Speaker 1: See you motherfuckers next week. Oh my gosh. See you
- 53:53Speaker 1: motherfuckers later. That was good.
