Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll
- 0:21everyone. Oh my God, you guys were so
- 0:24sweet about our return yesterday.
- 0:26We just have so many comments of people being like, Oh my God,
- 0:29you're back. I missed you you guys.
- 0:30Honestly, it made my day. I was nervous about the return,
- 0:35especially talking about certain topics like the Sabrina
- 0:38Carpenter album cover, things that are just like a little bit
- 0:40contentious. You always get like a little bit
- 0:42nervous before posting podcasts like that.
- 0:44And because I wasn't in the groove of it, I was like a
- 0:46little bit anxious. But you guys made it so easy and
- 0:49I'm so excited to be back. So before we get into it, I
- 0:52actually wanted to let you guys know we are currently on the
- 0:55hunt for a year long partnership for Mini Scroll for 2026.
- 0:59I feel like we have really built this platform up.
- 1:02This is kind of like Mini Scroll is kind of like our bread and
- 1:05butter. Now we have over a year of Mini
- 1:07Scroll and it's grown 450% since we started it last year.
- 1:11Obviously by 2026 that number is going to be even bigger.
- 1:14And you guys are so dedicated and so supportive and so culty
- 1:19for all of the brands that we talked about and that really
- 1:22helps us get things over the line.
- 1:24So I was wondering if you guys, any brands that you think would
- 1:27be really cool to for us to align with for 2026?
- 1:30Like we're in the process of pitching it like obviously no
- 1:33guarantee. Like any brand that's thrown out
- 1:35there, like we'll try and reach out to them.
- 1:36Any brands that you know that you think could be, you know,
- 1:39like aligned well with Mini Scroll?
- 1:41We are open to suggestions. Getting a year long partnership
- 1:45for mini Scroll would actually like change my life.
- 1:48Like I would no longer have really bad mental health because
- 1:52I would feel so secure in like the cash flow of the business
- 1:56for next year. So that is like a huge goal of
- 1:58mine. So please manifest for us.
- 2:01All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 2:03The first story that I have for you guys is that Tanna Mojo and
- 2:05Brooks Schofield are going to end their podcast soon.
- 2:10So Tana and Brooke have announced that the end of their
- 2:13wildly popular podcast Canceled, is near.
- 2:17Now, there have been rumors for a long time that Canceled was
- 2:19going to end. I think people felt like they
- 2:21were a little bit checked out, especially since Brooke's racist
- 2:24tweet scandal that happened last year.
- 2:26But they've been on tour. They're actually coming to
- 2:28Australia soon. So, you know, they've been doing
- 2:30the rounds, OK. They've been like really pushing
- 2:33forward, but I think the vibes were just a little bit off on
- 2:37the podcast. And then now, on the most recent
- 2:39episode of Canceled, Tana and Brooke spoke openly about how
- 2:43they feel like they have outgrown their podcast.
- 2:45Sucks so much because I love you so much but like I'm getting in
- 2:51this place where I am like really awaiting the ending of
- 2:54this contract for my piece. Like realizing that this is the
- 2:58final outlier in my peace era, which is so unfortunate because
- 3:02when we started it, well, we weren't peaceful when we started
- 3:04it. I guess you know what I mean?
- 3:05Like just that's what it is. It's like starting this thing as
- 3:09chaotic ass individuals down for the smoke, fucking up our own
- 3:12life. Barney's beanery ING it up,
- 3:14fucking pool boy the house down. And now we're in this era where
- 3:19like both of us are so fucking peaceful.
- 3:21And then like. Yeah, I feel like I don't have
- 3:25enough time to stand up before. Like something else happens
- 3:27every single time. It's just like.
- 3:29And even this episode is no different.
- 3:31You know what I mean? Like it's just, I'm so excited
- 3:33for you to be able to, to talk about food and me to be able to
- 3:37talk about mental health and I want fucking whatever, you know,
- 3:40just. Yeah, not even like necessarily
- 3:42permanently. I know we talk about this all
- 3:43the time, but like just I want to take a beat where it's like
- 3:46my entire life isn't like all about me and like, or other
- 3:51people. I I want it to be like fun and
- 3:54like food or personality based or like makeup or something that
- 3:58like doesn't people don't have a space to comment on in like such
- 4:02a like negative way. I understand feeling like you've
- 4:06outgrown something, I guess, but I find it interesting because I
- 4:09feel like cancelled is still kind of a new endeavor for them.
- 4:13I know it's, I know it's been around for a few years, but it
- 4:15still feels a little bit premature for it to end.
- 4:17And people are like, what is Brooke going to do?
- 4:19This is like her main job. I get feeling anxious when they
- 4:24post and they talk about people and getting feedback like that
- 4:26happens to us. I think one of the biggest
- 4:29things that we've tried to implement here at Centennial
- 4:32World is that our podcast, even we are talking about kind of
- 4:35like influencers, gossipy topics.
- 4:38We're always trying to give it the gravity that it deserves,
- 4:40kind of looking at it from a critical lens and what it means
- 4:44for like the wider, you know, online space, culture, society,
- 4:48all of that. That's like a big part of that.
- 4:50And that is what has kept us still so passionate about
- 4:54covering this space in general. They said they might do a U.S.
- 4:57tour after Australia but like probably not and then their
- 5:00contract will end and that will be the end of cancelled.
- 5:03OK, the next story that I have for you guys is that Doja Cat
- 5:06has gone viral for her interaction with a fan.
- 5:09So this all started around 10 days ago when a TikTok of Doja
- 5:13Cat meeting a fan started circulating on TikTok.
- 5:15In the video, the fan, whose name is Pablo, films himself
- 5:18giving the artist the T-shirt that he's wearing.
- 5:21At first glance, the video seems quite harmless.
- 5:23However, Pablo is quite touchy with Doja Cat and he's
- 5:27repeatedly hugging her. That being said, Doja does seem
- 5:30OK with it in the video. So she's smiling and she's
- 5:33laughing and she's kind of going along with it.
- 5:36However, a couple of days later things really took a turn.
- 5:39So Doja allegedly went on to tweet, quote I threw that musty
- 5:42ass shirt away. This has been deleted which is
- 5:44why I said allegedly. And in another sense to lead the
- 5:47post, she also allegedly wrote, bottom line is I'll smile at
- 5:51you, but it doesn't mean I fuck with you and don't touch me and
- 5:54manhandle me when you don't even fucking know me.
- 5:57If you know, you know. I honestly think I need to stand
- 5:59up for myself in the moment sometimes.
- 6:02And he didn't even know my fucking name.
- 6:03To be touching me and kissing me on my face like that is crazy.
- 6:07Pablo then posted a TikTok responding to Doja's tweets.
- 6:10He essentially explained the situation from his point of view
- 6:12as saying that he didn't intend to make her feel uncomfortable
- 6:15or anything like that. Pablo has since made light of
- 6:18the situation, posting a TikTok with the caption lol.
- 6:21If I musty why do you say I smell good?
- 6:24All right, so this has sparked a lot of discourse about kind of
- 6:27that fan interaction, experience with celebrities, parasocial
- 6:31relations, friendships, boundaries between fans and
- 6:34celebrities. And if Dojo's response was
- 6:38essentially appropriate, I understand why she didn't stand
- 6:41up for herself in the moment. I think as a woman, so many of
- 6:43us can relate to that. I know she's famous.
- 6:45I know there's a power dynamic. But regardless, if a man comes
- 6:49over to you and he is, you know, touching you and being really
- 6:53invasive in your space, like a lot of us, this would be my
- 6:57reaction. Like my gut reaction would just
- 6:59be to be like complacent, you know, and just be like, haha,
- 7:02yeah. Like just acting like I was so
- 7:05OK with it because I would be scared when he's so close in my
- 7:08space of making him angry. So I think it's like it's, it's
- 7:11an instinct, you know, it's, it's hard to explain unless you,
- 7:14I guess, are a woman or have that instinct.
- 7:16But it's so instinctual. Like it's not something that I
- 7:19would be thinking about doing. It would just like be something
- 7:21that I naturally did. And I imagine when you're
- 7:23famous, you probably have similar instincts like that.
- 7:26I think it's interesting because I do not believe that fans
- 7:30should ever be going over to celebrities in watching them.
- 7:32Like I do not think that is appropriate at all.
- 7:35But we also know Doja has had so many issues with her fans doing
- 7:38stuff like this to her and her speaking out about it, being so
- 7:41vocal about how fans feel like entitled to her.
- 7:44And it's really bizarre that people are still doing this to
- 7:47her when she has tried to set these boundaries.
- 7:50And depending on the situation, sometimes I think it's invasive
- 7:52to go up to a celebrity and ask them to take their picture, let
- 7:55alone be like touching them. Unfortunately there is this
- 7:58normalization of toxic fandom with celebrities, especially
- 8:02very online celebrities like Doja Cat.
- 8:04But yeah, I think it's totally fine how she responded after.
- 8:07I think it's good that she stood up for herself and talked about
- 8:09this on Twitter. Do I think it's a bit shady that
- 8:11she said I threw that musty ass shirt?
- 8:14Yeah, like, maybe, but it's Doja Cat.
- 8:16Like, of course she was going to say something like that.
- 8:20She is so unfiltered online. No matter what she's talking
- 8:24about, no matter who she's talking to.
- 8:27I'm not surprised she said that. That's just how she's standing
- 8:30up for herself. All right, the last word that I
- 8:32have for you guys is I really need to talk about the
- 8:35ultraviolet sunscreen scandal that's happening right now.
- 8:38This is very Australian focused. However, I know that they just
- 8:42launched, like the brand just launched into the US as well,
- 8:44and it's literally all over social media right now because
- 8:48it's such a big deal. So wildly popular sunscreen
- 8:51brand Ultraviolet is facing a lot of controversy right now
- 8:55after the consumer advocacy group Choice did independent
- 8:58testing of their sunscreen and the results came back pretty
- 9:02bad. Choice tested 20 Australian
- 9:05sunscreens as part of the study, and they found that 16 did not
- 9:08meet the ratings on their labels.
- 9:11However, Ultraviolet, which is a very buzzy luxury sunscreen,
- 9:15it's kind of like super goop in the US.
- 9:18It's one that like all the girlies wear under their makeup.
- 9:21Like it's very much marketed to us as like this luxurious like
- 9:26strong SPF product that's also got like beautiful skin care and
- 9:30is amazing under your makeup. So Ultraviolet came back with
- 9:34the worst rating. Choice tested their lean screen
- 9:38mattifying zinc sunscreen SPF 5050 plus OK, and it came back
- 9:44as SPF four. Choice tested the sunscreen
- 9:47twice. They got an SPF 4 rating, and
- 9:50then they notified Ultraviolet. And then they sent another
- 9:53sample to a different lab in Germany to be tested to make
- 9:56sure basically that it was correct.
- 9:57And these results yielded an SPF 5 S Ultraviolet has refuted
- 10:02these claims and provided proof of their SPF 50 rating.
- 10:06They urgently retested the same batch and it came back with an
- 10:11SPF that's higher than 60. OK, so before I continue, this
- 10:15is a huge deal here in Australia.
- 10:18The UV radiation from the sun here is amongst the strongest in
- 10:22the world. And because of that, sunscreen
- 10:24testing is so intense here. Everyone that I know wears
- 10:28sunscreen every single day, SPF 50 minimum.
- 10:31Like it is such a big deal. You have to wear sunscreen here.
- 10:35Ultraviolet is my sunscreen. I have worn it every single day
- 10:39since they launched about six years ago.
- 10:41Literally every single day. I haven't worn this one.
- 10:44This is their zinc sunscreen. I wear their mineral sunscreen.
- 10:47However, obviously when I found this out, I was freaking the
- 10:50fuck out. I was like screaming.
- 10:51I was like SPF 4. Like, are you fucking kidding
- 10:54me? You know, I'm so pale.
- 10:57My mom has a history of skin cancer and we're Canadian.
- 10:59Like she did not grow up or, you know, in the Australian sun at
- 11:03all. Like she lives in Canada, OK,
- 11:05and she gets skin cancer. So I was like, I am so fucked if
- 11:09I have been wearing like essentially no protection every
- 11:13single day for this many years in the Australian sun.
- 11:17I was like, I am so screwed. And this is so dangerous for
- 11:21anybody else that has been and wearing their sunscreen.
- 11:23So that's how I was feeling. I was feeling very, very, very
- 11:25betrayed. Like I said, Ultraviolet is
- 11:28refuting these claims saying we have tested this.
- 11:31It is still SPF 60 plus to us. Like Choice.
- 11:34Show us your receipts. So overnight Choice did release
- 11:37their receipts to prove where they got their samples tested
- 11:41and to also show their testing did come back with these
- 11:44ratings. The main criticisms here are
- 11:46that based on the receipts that they've provided and all the
- 11:49information, Choice used a small number of people to test the
- 11:53sunscreen on. It's presumed about 13 people,
- 11:56whereas ultraviolet, they tested it on 30 people.
- 11:58And also that Choice decanted the sunscreen to ship it off and
- 12:02test it. So tons of cosmetic chemists are
- 12:05coming out on TikTok saying likely the decanting process
- 12:09along with it being like shipped internationally in different
- 12:12conditions possibly destabilize the product which changed its
- 12:16SPF. However, choice has hit back
- 12:19again saying well, they decanted all of the sunscreens, including
- 12:23the zinc ones. Like all the sunscreens they
- 12:25tested, they all decanted into the same type of bottle like
- 12:28these amber bottles. And the second lowest rating
- 12:31that they got was SPF 24. So there is a significant
- 12:34difference between SPF 24 and SPF four.
- 12:38One of the best explanations that I've seen from this is from
- 12:41at Emily cosmetic chemist on TikTok, who basically said that
- 12:44after all of these receipts, after all the information that
- 12:47we have, it's likely that ultraviolet zinc sunscreen
- 12:49formula is really just like not that stable.
- 12:52She was like, I do believe that ultraviolet is getting SPF 60
- 12:55plus and I do believe that choice got SPF 4.
- 12:58She thinks the decanting process along with the fact that
- 13:02Ultraviolets batch that they've been testing has been kept in a
- 13:06lab this whole time. So like, it's not being shipped,
- 13:09it's not on shelves, it's not in any other type of bottle.
- 13:12It's being kept at their warehouse to like continually
- 13:15test that specific batch. So she was like, all of those
- 13:18variables contribute to the fact that I think that both of these
- 13:21companies got the results they claim they did.
- 13:24But it's troubling that choice still got SPF 4.
- 13:27So Emily is advocating for labels on sunscreens that
- 13:30basically say, like, do not decant this.
- 13:33She was like, so many people decant their sunscreens to go on
- 13:36vacation, to travel, like all of that.
- 13:37Basically just like taking the sunscreen and putting it in a
- 13:40different bottle, like a smaller bottle so you could travel or
- 13:42whatever. Decanting is different than
- 13:44applying it, obviously. But she was like, yeah, people
- 13:46do that all the time. And we need to have proper
- 13:49labeling on this that says like, do not do that.
- 13:51She was like, you know, some people might think that's
- 13:53obvious, but like on cartoons of milk, we have big, bold letters
- 13:57that say keep this refrigerated or, you know, after opening, put
- 14:01this in the fridge, whatever. So she was like, this stuff
- 14:04isn't actually as obvious to consumers as I think some people
- 14:08maybe who work in the industry or who are really into
- 14:11sunscreen, skin care, beauty, whatever might think.
- 14:14And she was like, yeah, we need more education around that.
- 14:16If it can destabilize a product this much, Like, we need some
- 14:21labels on this. And I mean, that's the same for
- 14:23me. Like, I used to be a beauty
- 14:25journalist. OK, I was mostly makeup, but
- 14:26still, like, a beauty journalist.
- 14:28I had no idea that pumping your sunscreen into a different
- 14:31bottle could change the SPF. That would never cross my mind.
- 14:35I will say I've had a very good experience with ultraviolet.
- 14:38I've never been burned, but it still freaked me the fuck out.
- 14:42So hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.
- 14:44The TGA has been, you know, obviously notified and saying
- 14:48that they are looking into it. So hopefully we get some answers
- 14:52soon because this sunscreen is not cheap.
- 14:55All right, you guys. Well, that's it for mini scroll
- 14:56today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 14:58I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 15:01and subscribe, please Spotify star rated US and subscribe to
- 15:04us on YouTube. And Annabelle is back and she
- 15:07will talk to you guys tomorrow. And then at the end of her
- 15:10episode, there will be an interview that I recorded last
- 15:13week for you guys. So it'll be a big long episode
- 15:16for you guys tomorrow. All right, thank you, love you.
- 15:19Bye.
